DAVIE POLICE CHIEF BLAMES BSO DEPUTY’S COVID-19 DEATH ON ‘HOMOSEXUAL SEXUAL EVENTS’ Jason Parsley
D
avie’s Police Chief was put on administrative leave after he allegedly claimed a gay sheriff’s deputy died of COVID-19 because he was a “homosexual who attended homosexual sexual events.”
Mike Tucker, chief of staff of the Florida Fraternal Order of Police, sent a letter to Davie’s Town Administrator complaining of the police chief’s behavior, and comments about the deputy, who died April 3 from COVID-19. Shannon Bennett, a gay man, was a 12 veteran of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. According to the letter, Police Chief Dale Engle made the remarks after a patrol briefing April 7, according to the FOP complaint. “[He] allegedly yelled about a ‘backstory’ which proclaimed that Deputy Bennett contracted and died from the virus because he was a ‘homosexual who attended

Bennett was to wed his partner, Jonathan Frey, in December. GAY DEPUTY’S DEATH BECOMES CATALYST FOR SUSPENSION OF BSO UNION PREZ Jason Parsley
I
n an epic clash, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony suspended the president of the deputy’s union after he penned a letter to Sun Sentinel where he criticized the Sheriff’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis. In a scathing rebuke of the Sheriff, President of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association Jeff Bell took him to task for not providing deputies with sufficient protective equipment. “This so-called BSO savior, the man who rode into office with the support of distraught Parkland parents and this union, has failed to provide leadership at this time when it is needed most,” Bell wrote. “While BSO employees are being exposed and testing positive for COVID-19, Tony has been politically fiddling with facts like Nero as Rome burned; holding press conferences to state everything is fine.” Local 10 reported Tony lashed out at Jeff Bell at a press conference accusing him of politicizing the death of Deputy Shannon Bennett, a gay man, who recently died from COVID-19. “I have a rogue employee who decides to politicize and capitalize on a moment when we lost one of our own,” Tony said. “It’s not only dishonorable, it’s unnecessary.” In the letter to the Sentinel Bell writes of Bennett: “In this latest crisis, rather than accept our overture and demonstrate some compassion and leadership, Tony lost
his composure last Saturday [which was captured on video] in front of BSO deputies who gathered at the North Broward Hospital to escort fallen Deputy Shannon Bennet to the funeral home. Bennett died a week after being diagnosed with COVID-19 at age 39.” Bennett was a 12-year veteran of the BSO and was to wed his partner in December. Local 10 reports that the union is now holding a no-confidence vote on Tony. Members have until Friday to cast their vote. Bell has now threatened to sue Tony over his suspension. “What the sheriff did was to stifle free speech, violate federal whistleblowing laws, state whistleblowing laws, unfair labor practices and stop a union president from being able to communicate, because he is getting complaints from other first responders, other members of our community that are keeping us safe,” Bell’s attorney Eric Schwartzreich told Local 10. It appears for the time being Tony has nothing else to say about Bell. “Deputy Bell is currently the subject of an internal affairs investigation related to violations of BSO policies and procedures,” Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a prepared media statement. “He will be afforded all protections and due process rights afforded under the law and consistent with BSO policies. Otherwise, the agency will not comment on pending internal affairs investigations.”

TALLAHASSEE PASSES NATION’S STRONGEST BAN ON CONVERSION THERAPY But with ongoing challenges in Palm Beach County and Tampa its fate is uncertain Jason Parsley

Tallahassee, the state’s capital, has become the latest city to ban conversion therapy on minors in Florida. But this ordinance goes further than others because it includes some adults, and an expanded definition of LGBT. Some are touting it as the strongest and most expansive ban in the nation. “This is a breakthrough moment, with Tallahassee unanimously passing the most inclusive protections against conversion therapy in the state, covering not just LGBTQ minors but also vulnerable adults who could be subjected to it by others,” said Jon Harris, Public Policy Director of Equality Florida.

“This kind of local government leadership is vitally important for protecting their residents from debunked and potentially deadly harms.” Conversion therapy is also known at “reparative therapy” or “sexual orientation change efforts” (SOCE). The practice has been rejected by every major professional health organization in the U.S. including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the American Psychiatric Association. The three areas that separate the Tallahasse ban from others include banning conversion therapy on some “vulnerable” adults; specifically listing several additional sexualities and gender identities; and banning the city from doing business with places that practice conversion therapy. “Mayor [John] Dailey and the City Commission are also the first in the state to make clear that the City will not use its funds for conversion therapy or contract with organizations that practice it,” Harris said. South Florida has long been at the forefront of enacting bans on conversion therapy on minors with at least 18 in place including Broward County, Palm Beach County and the City of Miami. While most communities in South Florida have been receptive to a ban, Miami-Dade rejected a county-wide one in 2017. Rand Hoch, president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, said his organization spent two years, 2016 and 2017, pushing for bans throughout the county, which include nine in total. Hoch noted the expansiveness of the Tallahassee ban. “Symbolically, the ban is also significant since it includes not only LGBT individuals,

but specifically utilizes the acronym ‘LGBTQIA+’,” Hoch said. Those letters are defined in the ordinance as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or gender nonconforming, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, pansexual, genderqueer, non-binary gender, or any other variation of human sexuality, gender identity or gender expression. Hoch pointed out that even though the bans in South Florida do not list those other sexualities he said they too are covered. “As it now stands in Palm Beach County, all people under 18 — including those who are LGBTQIA+ — are protected by our ordinances,” he said. Orlando Gonzales, Executive Director of SAVE, agreed the South Florida bans are all inclusive. “While the Tallahassee ban includes an expanded use of the LGBTQ acronym that language doesn’t change the scope of the bill given that all of these bans protect all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions,” he said.
Hoch said none of the South Florida bans include adults. At this time Hoch said he isn’t interested in amending the ordinances currently in place in Palm Beach County. “PBCHRC has received numerous complaints over the years regarding LGBTQ youth subjected to conversion therapy but we have never even heard of one regarding a ‘vulnerable adult,’” Hoch said. A “vulnerable” adult could be defined as someone who is mentally challenged to the extent that they are unable to make decisions affecting their own welfare and for whom a court has appointed a guardian to make those decisions. “Any changes to our ordinances would legally re-open the doors for additional legal challenges,” Hoch said. “So we will not be seeking any changes to the existing conversion therapy bans.” There is one area though where the ban in Palm Beach County goes further than Tallahassee. The local county ban not only prohibits medical and mental health care

Tampa filed a motion to strike Liberty Counsel’s brief. Liberty Counsel replied to the motion last week. “As the legal maneuvering continues, we await a date for oral argument,” Hoch said. Hoch is worried about the future of all of these cases. “With the enactment of the Tallahassee conversion therapy ban, Liberty Counsel now has the opportunity to file suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, seeking to overturn the ban,” Hoch said. “Liberty Counsel is seeking any path to the U.S. Supreme Court it can use.

The Beach is coming back better than ever.” Bahan moved to Central Florida in 2003, but continued to stay in touch and spoke to Robinson at least once a month. She last spoke to Robinson on her birthday. “She sounded upbeat. She sounded good,” she said. “Didn’t sound like anything was wrong.” Robinson loved the spotlight and loved attention and considered Twist her second home where she had her own reserved seat. “The owners of Twist treated her like a queen. One thing that really made her smile was positive attention,” Alaimo said. “She was such a modest and humble person but her aura was larger than life. You would see it in her smile.” The Miami Beach Pride Parade was one
NEWS MIAMI-DADE of her favorite events of the year. She would often ride with Twist, but in later years Alaimo drove her in the parade. “Being a resident of Miami Beach for over 65 years she was known as ‘The Mother of South Beach,’” the Miami Beach Pride Facebook post reads. “Henrietta was a welcoming face to many at Twist and was always there for those who needed a hug or comforting embrace. Rest in Peace Henrietta, your light will not be forgotten.” Robinson’s mother died when she was an infant and she ended up being raised by her grandmother. She was one of six siblings. Alaimo said most of her family did not accept her as a trans woman. “One of her sisters had a baby and she was told she wasn’t allowed to see the child,” he said. “She was a trailblazer,” Bahan said of Robinson’s legacy. “She did more for the LGBT community than people realize. Henrietta is a big part of where we came from, and where we need to go.” Former Mayor Mattie Herrera Bower gave Robinson a commendation on behalf of the city of Miami Beach for her activism in 2011. While most of her family did not accept her, Robinson did have an uncle in South Beach who gave her a job as a chef in his restaurant. “She had such great stories to tell about that restaurant,” Alaimo said. One such story she often recounted was the
time she met Diana Ross. “Apparently Diana Ross would come in every week. And she always ate her pasta dish,” he said. “One day she said ‘I want to see who’s cooking my favorite food.’” So Robinson came out and Ross exclaimed “This is the queen who’s making my food!” While the restaurant has long since closed down, Robinson never stopped cooking. “She was a fabulous cook who made a mean lasagna which she loved to tell she had made for Gianni Versace,” Góngora said. Alaimo loved her pot roast and linzer tarts, her crab salad and her bolognese. Alaimo’s children loved her food too. “My son loved her bacon wrapped scallops. Whenever he got an A in school she’d make whatever he wanted,” he said. “She would make my daughter a cake in the shape of a heart for Valentine’s Day.” Alaimo said Robinson would cater her own birthday parties – at Twist of course. Before going in for her surgery she had already made the food for this year’s birthday celebration and tucked it away in the fridge and freezer for when she got out. Alaimo met Robinson in 2011 and quickly bonded with her over their shared Italian heritage. “She loved people. They loved her energy,” he said. “She had a heart of gold. She trusted everyone. Always gave people the benefit of the doubt.”

Sometimes though that trust would get her burned, remembers Bahan. “She never had a bad word to say about anybody, even the people that did her wrong,” Bahan said. Alaimo set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help cover the expenses of Robinson’s death. The goal is $3,500, any additional funds will be donated to Pridelines. Once the quarantine is over Alaimo hopes to plan a celebration of life in Robinson’s honor.

COMMUNITY SAVES THE BOX GALLERY – FOR NOW
Jason Parsley THE COMMUNITY RALLIED AROUND ACTIVIST AND ARTIST ROLANDO CHANG BARRERO, RAISING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SAVE HIS ART GALLERY IN WEST PALM BEACH FROM CLOSING. “The community response was phenomenal,” Barrero said. “I didn’t realize that many people cared.” So far the GoFundMe page has raised $5,260, which means he’s got April covered. But if the shutdown lasts another month he’ll be back in the same place. So for now, he’s preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best. “I have to look at this realistically,” he said. “It’s challenging.” In the past few years Barrero has become a fixture in the LGBT community with his

most recent undertaking being Pride on the Block, an event that took place right before the coronavirus pandemic turned into a crisis here in South Florida. This year Barrero was named the official set designer of this year’s Pride of the Palm Beaches, and personally invested $4,000 to create custom made merchandise. Now that the event has been cancelled he’s stuck with the products. In addition to the GoFundMe he’s been asking people on social media to consider purchasing some of the merchandise. Since the products are not dated, or specific to a city, he’s hoping to be able to sell it down the line at other events in the future. Barrero isn’t just worried about his business though, it’s been tough on him personally as well since he’s not making any money right now. All of the money he’s raised through the GoFundMe account is to cover the expenses of the gallery. A family member stepped up to cover his mortgage. In response people have been “sending me boxes of food and gifts,” for which he’s been thankful. While out of work he’s also been making masks for donations.

WEATHERING THE STORM CALLED COVID
x
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
M
aya Angelou once wrote that “there is no storm that does not run out of rain.” Great speaker and inspirational soul that she was, she never met COVID-19, the coronavirus. The truth is we just don’t know yet how bad it can be. It is going to get worse before it gets better. Stressed out though you may be, we are still early in the game. Brace yourself. This is not a Hollywood movie, and John Wayne won’t be rescuing us in 90 minutes. Marshall Dillon is not going to save the town. No one found a cure for polio in four months because a president dictated he wanted people in churches by Easter, either. This is a microscopic and lethal pathogen not governed by boundaries or bullies. It marches to its own drummer. This is not a virus that just happened “over there.” You can’t ignore it because it started in China, wound up in Italy or is killing people in Iran. It’s in over 150 countries, and it is reshaping the destiny of our planet. So, don’t worry too much if the car dealership did not buff and wax your car properly. There is always a message in the madness; always a learning moment in a tragedy. Materialistic fools that we are, maybe we were running too fast and caring too little. Maybe we were building too many B1 carpet bombers when we should have been building hospitals. That doesn’t matter, right now. We can’t look back at what is past. We can only learn from it for the future. We can try to be better tomorrow. We can live and love and laugh today, making each moment count. That destiny we can control.
Each day, on my radio show, on WWNN, I bring to life the heartbeat of our community facing up to COVID-19. My show is airing those amongst us who are reaching out — offering healing to hurting hearts. At SFGN we have a mission. Every week, we illuminate the lives of those whose story is worth telling and whose cause is worth publicizing. That is the job of journalism. In the face of this adversity, SFGN is facing the challenges so many other businesses are. This calamity hit South Florida during the heart and soul of our tourist season, when our paper would be the biggest, our income the greatest. We are taking hits that are right crosses to the jaw. With so many of our advertisers shuttered, their own losses great, our income and distribution is diminishing daily. And our paper was free to begin with. The South Florida Gay News represents a gay free press in a disturbed straight world. Someone must tell the story of a police chief who says a deputy that died from COVID-19 endured that fate because he was a gay man. A free press does not publish fake news. It exposes the fakes, the frauds, the phonies. Gay men and women never should have been criminals. It was criminal to treat us so. But as you can see, even today, having accomplished so much, we are still called upon to remind the world of our authenticity. As long as SFGN has a breath, you have a voice. We will not allow anyone to tread upon you. We are your ally and advocate, but we can’t do it without your help.
THERE IS ALWAYS A MESSAGE IN THE MADNESS; ALWAYS A LEARNING MOMENT IN A TRAGEDY.
Our advertisers are the local businesses, theaters, restaurants, bars and festivals shut down by this virus. They are our realtors, waiters, bartenders and massage therapists. They have nothing to advertise. Their businesses are not operating. Ironically, a free gay newspaper is the only vehicle that can tell their story, share their pain, and still articulate their aspirations for tomorrow. But we are in the same boat, trying to stay afloat with diminished revenues and less advertisers. Even more biting is the fact that there are more stories to tell now than ever before, but with less resources to do so. Still, our furloughed staff is volunteering to tell your story. They do it because they believe in a better tomorrow and a free press today. Ben Kweller’s song comes to mind: “You
gotta fight, you gotta fight to your last dying breath, every day.” At SFGN, I intend to do just that. Our paper may be smaller, but our voice is just as loud. Less is sometimes more. Bigger is not always better. You can support SFGN with donations online at www.SFGN.com/donate. Beggars can’t be greedy. We will take what you give us. So will our printers. We are all in this together. You can continue to take out advertisements in our paper as we distribute thousands still to the greater Fort Lauderdale area. Be the champion of the truth. Support a gay free press. Just when you find yourself already digging deep, dig deeper. The story you help save in this newspaper today might be one about you tomorrow.

I
n the Book of Genesis in the Bible is the story of the great flood. As the flood waters recede, God makes a covenant with Noah that God will never again destroy the whole world, placing a rainbow in the sky as the permanent reminder of that covenant. Along with the rainbow came the promise of a new world, a new life, a new normal. This past week we celebrated the feast of Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This is a sign of yet another covenant between God and the people of this world; that good will overcome evil and that new life will always defeat death. The challenge for us as people of faith is to look for the rainbows, to seek out the new life which follows life-altering events. To seek new ways to shape the new normal in positive and healthy ways. After the attack on 9/11, this country came together in a sense of unity that had long been forgotten. After the tornadoes in Nashville, the community came together to support each other and rebuild. These lifealtering events can bring out the good in people. Out of destruction can come a sense of community and common purpose.
The world is now facing a new lifealtering event, the coronavirus. The old normal is forever destroyed, and what we are experiencing is only a transitory change of behavior, there will be a new normal coming. This event offers a possibility that few other events have offered. This is a global issue, not a national crisis or a situation where groups of nations are in conflict with other nations. This pandemic has the power and promise of uniting the world with a common purpose. We, the people of earth! This generation has the opportunity and obligation to shape the new normal to come. Are we going to move away from competition toward cooperation? Are we going to find a way to work together to bring peace to the nations and healing to the planet? The signs are there, fish and clean water in the canals in Venice, clean air over Beijing and Los Angeles. The Earth is ready to heal, are we ready to seek new life and a new creation? We have the choice between fear and hope, depression or optimism, death or new life. With faith, the light at the end of the tunnel is a rainbow.

CARE RESOURCE PROVIDES T E L E H E A LT H M E D I C A L A N D B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S REMAINING COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE CARE DURING COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients’ holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to benefit from telehealth services. In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and specifically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference. Care Resource’s Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis.
ABOUT CARE RESOURCE: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. 18

You can support your favorite dining establishments during this time by ordering take-out or delivery. With all the delivery services available you may order almost anything you’d like from any eatery. Personally, I choose to support locally owned businesses. I figure the big chains can fend for themselves (although I do have a weakness for Popeye’s). A few weeks ago, we ran an article letting you know how your favorite neighborhood businesses were getting through the crisis. A few of them have decided not to offer pick-up or delivery anymore and to shut down for the duration. Here’s an updated list of what’s available in our area. Unless otherwise indicated, delivery is available from third-party companies such as Grubhub, Delivery Dudes, Postmates, Uber Eats and the like. We tried to contact every restaurant in the neighborhood, but many did not answer phone calls or emails in time for our deadline.

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER GETS CREATIVE DURING SHUTDOWN J.W. Arnold
W
hen Michael Murphy was forced to shutter his Oakland Park studio in the wake of the coronavirus emergency, the commercial photographer wasn’t sure how he might survive. The 61-year-old South Florida native had taken up portrait photography in 1990 and focused on corporate clients in the warehouse space for more than two decades. He admitted, “I’m really an artist and not a businessperson and the fact that I’ve been in business and employed people for so long is amazing.” Practically overnight, long-scheduled photoshoots and portrait sittings were cancelled and Murphy was forced to confront the reality that this might be long-term. He also realized an even bigger issue he would have to face is the emotional toll the selfquarantine might take. “I knew I would have to find some sort of creative outlet if I was going to make it through this,” Murphy said. On Facebook, he discovered from friends that photographers across the country were joining the Front Steps Project, launched in Massachusetts by Cara Soulia and intended to document this unique period in history as millions of people are confined to their homes. Soon, Murphy was enthusiastically turning his camera to neighbors and friends, photographing them outside their homes – all while carefully observing social distancing. “The purpose of this project is to bring us together when we might be feeling isolated, and to also bring some joy and outside time to our newly non-scheduled lives,” he explained. Over the past three weeks, Murphy has been chronicling the lives of a diverse collection of local residents, striving to capture their unique personalities during this unforgettable time. Some portraits are more formal, while others are taken “paparazzi” style. “People ask, ‘What should we do?’ and I tell them to do whatever they want. Share one minute of your existence with me. We have the muscle guys working out on their patio and a couple sharing martinis,” Murphy said. “Most importantly, this gives people a chance

to step outside and breathe for a moment.” Children and pets almost always steal the show, he recounted. Social media was buzzing over the family portrait of a local gay couple, their children, three dogs and pet chicken. Another portrait provided the opportunity for one family’s lesbian daughter to formally introduce her partner to the world. And Murphy is especially proud of the nontraditional families he shot at Arc Broward, Carpenter House and Manor Lanes. “I’ve never gone the normal route with anything I do,” he said. While the pandemic will eventually pass and people will return to their normal routines, Murphy feels these portraits will serve as timeless reminders of the unique challenges our community faced and conquered.
Front Porch Project portraits are free, although tips are appreciated. To learn more or schedule an appointment, contact Murphy at Michael@MichaelMurphy.com.

FROM CHORUS BOY TO ‘A CHORUS LINE,’ NEW BOOK DETAILS CHOREOGRAPHER’S STEPS J.W. Arnold
F
or more than 60 years, Bob Avian has made history on the Broadway stage. His first break came as a dancer in “West Side Story” and “Funny Girl.” He met choreographer and director Michael Bennett in 1962 and over the next two decades they would collaborate on “Promises, Promises,” “Company” and “Follies.” Avian shared a Tony Award with Bennett for their work on “A Chorus Line,” the show that reinvented the Broadway musical in the 1970s. He went on to produce “Dreamgirls,” and, on London’s West End, choreographed “Follies,” “Martin Guerre,” “The Witches of Eastwick,” “Miss Saigon” and “Sunset Boulevard.” Avian has worked with the biggest names on Broadway, including Barbra Streisand, Mary Martin, Cameron Mackintosh, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Carol Burnett, Jennifer Holliday, Patti LuPone, Elaine Stritch and Glenn Close. Now, he’s sharing the story of his career in a candid, witty and sometimes surprising autobiography, “Dancing Man, a Broadway Choreographer’s Journey.” “I’d intended to do it for quite a few years and my husband Peter [Pileski] and I started to write it, but we didn’t have a technique about how to approach a biography,” Avian explained. “Tom Santopietro, my coauthor who I’ve known for years, has written six books and wanted to do it, so we started three years ago. I had some shows and a couple of spine operations, so we kept coming back to it and coming back to it and coming back to it. Tom knows me well, he knows my voice and he wrote it all in long hand! I told the stories and Peter is a great editor, so it was a threeman effort.” With the current coronavirus crisis, Avian lamented that the first stops on his publicity tour were cancelled. With widespread social distancing, there are plenty of potential readers looking for a good book and “Dancing Man” is filled from cover to cover with fascinating backstage tales. Fortunately, the book is available from online sellers and theater insiders like Mackintosh and Seth Rudetsky have given their blessings in the reader reviews. Avian spent some time talking about his relationship with Bennett, during the 30-minute call from his winter home in Fort Lauderdale: “You can read most of this in the book,” he pointed out, inspiring another sale

by this writer just a few minutes later. Almost ironically, in this frightful new era of COVID-19, Avian spent some time remembering Bennett’s last months after being diagnosed with AIDS. Just as Avian was Bennett’s sidekick on the stage, he was also there through clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health and many ups and downs until “eventually the dark day came” in 1987. “I kept maintaining the shows I’d been working on when Cameron Mackintosh asked me to do the ‘Follies’ reunion in London. After hemming and hawing, I did finally take it, beginning an eight-show collaboration between us. Then came Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Sunset Boulevard.’ I only said yes because I thought Cameron was going to be one of the producers,” Avian said. Avian isn’t completely retired. The latest touring company of “Miss Saigon,” completed a run in West Palm Beach and was headed for Miami’s Arsht Center before public safety forced the premature cancellation. “I’m getting too old now,” the 82-year-old admitted, “but I have a great team of assistants doing all the leg work. I’m sitting around like an old grandad.” Much has changed since Avian took that first bow at the Winter Garden Theatre. Musical theater has become a billion-dollar business. Producers are doing more with less — smaller casts, more intimate shows — and a rap musical is now the hottest ticket around. And then there’s the shows like an unorthodox, reimagined revival of “West Side Story” that just opened on Broadway, but he’ll save his strong opinions on that one for another time.
“Dancing Man, a Broadway Choreographer’s Journey” by Bob Avian with Tom Santopietro (University Press of Mississippi, 240 pp., $28) is available from major book retailers. For more information, go to BobAvian.com.
