T
he Florida Bar’s Petition for Emergency Suspension of George Castrataro was granted on Thursday morning, April 16. The highest court in the state of Florida ordered his immediate suspension from the practice of law, and prohibited him from removing any monies from any of his trust accounts. In addition, Castrataro has been disallowed from acting as the personal representative for any estate, guardian for any ward, or trustee for any trust. Further, the Supreme Court required him to immediately furnish a copy of his suspension order to all clients, all the opposing counsel in any cases, judges in any courts where he is attorney of record, along with any banking institutions he uses related to his law practice. The court’s order appoints a new attorney to step in as a referee, and inventory all of Castrataro’s cases. Meanwhile, Castrataro
has been ordered not to issue any checks or release any funds from any trust account without the permission of the Supreme Court or its designated referee. In addition, the Court, which had last week held him in contempt for failing to comply with its order to produce trust account documents, again ordered him to do so, saying it was necessary for the Bar’s completion of its audit of his trust accounts.

ink Sub and FabScout continue their ongoing meal giveaways this week Friday at 6 p.m. in front of Hunter’s on Wilton Drive. So far they’ve handed out over 500 prepared meals for out of work employees in the service industry. “It’s with pleasure that we have more sponsors stepping up to help,” said Dawn Holloway, owner of Pink Sub. Friday night’s meal will be a turkey dinner and sponsored by Moni Love. It will also be a tribute to Roy Rollins, a member of the community who recently died. “We’re looking for other businesses that would like to sponsor and give assistance,” said Howard Andrew, owner of FabScout. The last event, held on Tuesday had a Latin theme and was sponsored by Pat Burnside Realty.

During this time of crisis Holloway wanted to help in some way so she turned to the thing she knows best — feeding people. “One thing I can do is feed people like I’ve always done. We are preparing meals for anyone that is in the service industry,” Holloway said. “They have waited on all of us. Put up with our shit. It’s time to take care of them. This was not their choice to not be able to work.”

COVID-19 CASES SURGE TO 55 IN WILTON MANORS AND 63 IN OAKLAND PARK Jason Parsley
C
ases of COVID-19 surged in Oakland Park to 63 since last week when the number was 39. In Wilton Manors the cases surged to 55 from 34 a week ago. Two weeks ago those numbers stood at 29 in Oakland Park and 31 in Wilton Manors. As of Monday, 4,078 have tested positive in Broward County up from 2,865 a week ago. “The curve has not flattened in Wilton Manors. While this jump in numbers may be related to a lag in reporting experienced by the Florida Department of Health, it is not what we had hoped after more than a month into this pandemic,” said Julie Carson, a Wilton Manors City Commissioner. “Social distancing is the new norm, and face masks and gloves are the new apparel.” In order to help mitigate the impact of the shutdown Carson said the city has cancelled code enforcement fine accruals; parking fees in metered lots have been suspended, and online convenience fees have been waived. She also said there will be no utility shutoffs. The numbers in parenthesis are from last week. Looking at the four individual zip codes that include some portion of Wilton Manors 33305 has 39 (19) cases; 33306 has nine (five); 33334 has 66 (45), and 33311, which includes a portion of Fort Lauderdale has 243 (178). All of the zip codes include portions of neighboring cities. In comparison to Wilton Manors there have been 922 (653) cases in Fort Lauderdale, and 63 (39) in Oakland Park. Meanwhile there are 27,058 (19,895) confirmed cases in Florida, more than 790,000 (560,000) in the U.S., and globally more than 2.4 million (1.8 million). So far there have been 823 (461) deaths in Florida, 42,000 (22,100) in the U.S. and globally more
than 170,000 (116,000). Florida is now under a stay-at-home order and in Broward only essential businesses are allowed to operate. Additionally Broward County is now mandating the use of face coverings when visiting essential businesses for services, or are providing essential services during in-person interactions with the public. Carson also encouraged those that have the ability to donate money to give to the GoFundMe account set up to assist the employees of Wilton Manors businesses. So far it has raised $4,686. Carson believes the pandemic will have a significant impact on the city government including a loss of $500,000 to $700,000 in revenue. Carson expects the commission to revise the budget and possibly make cuts in services. “While there are some offsetting expenditure savings, they are not enough to match revenue losses,” she said. “We are committed to developing a creative budget that will continue the provision of essential services to the community. To help, there is a freeze on hiring and certain delays on capital purchases.” Carson said there is a task force that is charged with addressing the many financial hardships that the city now faces. The city manager, Carson said, is working to develop a coordinated reopening with the rest of South Florida. “These times are very difficult, but our community is coming together in ways that are indicative of the bond that we share,” she said. “Be kind to yourself and others and remember to thank your nurses, doctors, medical personnel and first responders.”

REAL ESTATE AGENT WHO ATTENDED WINTER PARTY DIES OF COVID-19 Jason Parsley

D
aniel Thomas Carr III was a real estate agent, a classically trained pianist, and a member of the Pride Center’s Founders Circle. He loved colorful costumes, dance parties, and film festivals. His friends knew him as Thom.
Now he’s another victim of COVID-19. Carr died Wednesday. He was 67. Carr’s death becomes the third linked to the Winter Party Festival that took place in Miami Beach March 4-10. Carr and his husband J. Michael Heider had been together for 35 years. Carr worked as a real estate agent for Atlantic Properties International. “It is with overwhelming sadness that I share that our journey together has come to an end. For now, the parties, the cruises, the costume planning and trips together have come to an end,” Heider posted on Facebook. “Over the years and especially at this terrible time for the world, Thom brought us joy, music, his special creativity and talents. For that we can be grateful.” According to the Sun Sentinel Carr and Heider, both tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the annual Winter Party Festival. Carr was admitted to the hospital March 23 and rushed to the intensive-care unit. He’s a diabetic, one of the underlying conditions that have made older individuals more vulnerable to the coronavirus. Heider has made a full recovery. Just two days before his death Carr got a transfusion of antibody-infused plasma. Heider had posted a hopeful message on Facebook where he told people he had just donated his blood for serum antibodies in a last ditch effort to save his husband. Carr grew up in West Virginia and attended West Virginia University for college. He also lived in Louisville and Lexington Kentucky. Carr and Heider met in 1984 at a meeting of the Business and Professional Group (BPG), an LGBT business networking organization in Fort Lauderdale. Carr shared the story of their first meeting with SFGN in 2012 for a story about BPG. Carr referred to himself as shy, but said he was immediately attracted to Heider, so he introduced himself while the business group mingled. Carr and Heider have been active in the LGBT community including being members of the Founders Circle at the Pride
Center at Equality Park. They have often hosted events at their house for LGBT organizations like the Aqua Foundation for Women and the Pride Center. “Thom’s joy, kindness, humor, generosity, creativity, warmth, smile and zest for life impacted all around him. An accomplished pianist, Thom used his talents to entertain, uplift and inspire, donating his time and skills to a variety of communities,” reads a message from the Pride Center. “Words truly fail in the face of this loss and grief. Our heartfelt condolences to Thom’s husband and life partner of 35 years, J. Michael Heider.” Carr and Heider have also been long time supporters of Equality Florida, Florida’s statewide LGBT rights organization. “Today, we mourn the loss of Thom Carr, one of our earliest and most stalwart supporters in Fort Lauderdale,” a message from Equality Florida reads. “Thom and J were always among the best dressed at the Gala! We will never forget Thom’s generous spirit, kindness and support from the earliest days of Equality Florida.”

Carr was an accomplished pianist and released an album of his hits “Broadway & Beyond” in 2014, which was as a “dazzling collection of 23 piano solos,” by Mainly Piano. “Carr obviously has some spectacular playing chops,” the reviewer wrote. “There is an amazing variety of music here, but the album plays as a seamless whole due to Carr’s expressive playing style and interpretation of these timeless classics.” Besides Heider, Carr also leaves behind his sister Suzi Carr in Los Angeles. “I couldn’t have asked for a better brother and best friend. I will treasure our lifetime of memories. I am so very thankful for all the love and joy he brought into my life,” Suzi wrote on Facebook. “I can’t imagine life without you dear Thom, may you soar with the angels. You are truly loved and truly missed. I love you forever.” Heider wrote on Facebook he will plan a memorial and celebration of life as soon as it’s safe to do so again. “My memories from 35 years together, however, will never end,” Heider wrote. “Thank you for being part of our lives.”

n the mid-1950s, Phyllis Lyon and longtime partner and fellow journalist Del Martin co-founded the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB). They subsequently published the DOB newsletter The Ladder and in 1972, their book “Lesbian/Woman” became exceedingly influential in the lesbian feminist movement. They came to national prominence in the LGBT civil rights movement again in 2004 when Kate Kendell, the Executive Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, working in conjunction with Geoff Kors, Executive Director of Equality California, and new San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom asked the lesbian couple in an almost 50-year relationship if they would become an example of marriage equality and get married for Valentine’s Day that year. The move changed history, helping catapult the fight for marriage equality onto the front pages then and again in 2008 and effectively launch Newsom onto the national scene.

During a recent briefing on the coronavirus pandemic, now-California Gov. Gavin Newsom used the opportunity offered by an LGBTQ question from the Los Angeles Blade to talk about Phyllis Lyon: “I had the privilege of being involved in a marriage ceremony between Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin. The couple had been together for almost a half a century — the manifestation of faith, love and devotion, and yet they were denied on the basis of their sexual orientation the right to say two extraordinary words: I do. The power and potency of those two words is profoundly significant.”

GVSC STAYS SOCIAL, BUT GOES VIRTUAL DURING PANDEMIC Damon Scott
W
hile the need to be sociable hasn’t waned during the coronavirus pandemic, the method in which the gay community is socializing, for now, has changed.
The Gay Vista Social Club (GVSC), based in Miami, has been creative and adapted to do its part by hosting its first virtual event earlier this month on the Zoom platform. Executive director David Quinones said the April 11 event was the “GVSC WhoDunIt? Witchcraft & Wizardry Magical Mystery.” He said the free event was inspired by the Harry Potter series and the accompanying location of Hogwart’s Castle. Teams read over clues, looked at evidence and did investigations in a virtual roleplaying game. Other virtual events include an online social media contest called “Category Is,” as well as a dinner and movie night through a partnership with the OUTshine Film Festival. GVSC has worked with OUTshine since 2017, supporting them as the community partner and co-host for their “Men’s Spotlight Film & Party” events. The “Mix-N-Mingle Dinner & A Movie Too” had about 40 attendees who watched
the 1996 British film “Beautiful Thing.” Up next is the “Queers Got Talent” karaoke night on April 25, which will be hosted by Quinones on Zoom and Watch2Gether. Quinones said he hopes to organize about three virtual events a month. On May 5, he said, GVSC will also launch a virtual event for its philanthropic efforts. “Our philanthropic event we host is called ‘GVSC GaYme Night TUESDAYS’ which allows guests to play a series of house party games similar to [the TV show] Hollywood Game Night, mixed with a different live game show finale to win prizes,” Quinones said. Those who donate during the event get free drink tickets and are entered to win prizes through spinning the “GVSC Wheel.” GVSC’s philanthropy program targets two efforts, Quinones said. There is the “Gay Vista Scholarship Club,” which provides scholarships for LGBT individuals through the Unity Coalition | Coalición Unida; and the “Gay Vista Social

House,” which provides sustainable housing and social programming for LGBT seniors through Lambda Living. GVSC was founded in 2016 in an effort to offer Miami’s younger adult gay men some attractive options for hanging out and interacting that didn’t always rely on the nightclub and bar scene. It expanded its reach into Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors last year, too. Quinones said GVSC is an open group, but it’s still made up mostly of gay, bisexual and queer men. The No. 1 age range is 25-to-34 year olds, he said, followed by 35-to-44. He said there are men from their early 20s through their 50s, however, who have attended events. “As long as you have fun at the events — the mission is friendships, building friendships,
not a hookup,” he said. Couples come to the events, too, and single guys have met their future partners through GVSC. Quinones, who has lived in Miami since 2001, described GVSC to SFGN last year as “almost like a fraternity without a university attached to it.” Past events have included attending productions at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the Aquaman underwater men’s burlesque show at the B Ocean Resort near Fort Lauderdale Beach. Other events include the “Gone Wild Gay Days Weekend Retreat” and the “SWIM-End of Summer Pool Party.” GVSC has hosted “MISSION: Escape South Beach,” “Sunset Kayak to Camp Crystal Island,” (in honor of Friday the 13th) and the “Let’s Get Soaking Wet MIAMI Party Boat.”

OTLIGHT BUSINESS SPO
ESTATE PLANNING DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC Protect your loved ones and your assets safely, quickly and affordably. Welcome to Business Spotlight, the column that thanks advertisers who support SFGN. We invite you to support them, because without their outreach to us, we would not be here to reach out to you. We are a free newspaper that survives on the success of our advertisers so we encourage our readers to support those who support us.
O
ut of nowhere the COVID-19 pandemic has turned our lives upside down and forced us to face the fact of our own mortality. In my office, I find that many people are calling me to create a will or a trust to protect their loved ones in the event of their death or incapacity, or to revise their old documents. It’s human nature to procrastinate thinking about and dealing with these issues, but, if you don’t prepare documents designating who will care for you in the event of illness and who shall receive your assets in the event of your death, the law will decide for you. Fortunately, there are creative and affordable ways to get your estate planning documents signed and in effect quickly from the comfort and safety of your home. To get started, call my office and we will make an appointment for our remote initial consultation. I will send you a client intake letter and form to acquaint you with the documents you most likely need, and a one page form to get some basic information from you for our telephonic meeting. The estate planning consultation can be done over the telephone, face-time, or zoom, and back up information can be provided via email, fax, and texting. Documents can be provided to you for your review via email or mail, and a time can be set aside to assure that I will be available by telephone when you are reading the documents to answer your questions at a time that you choose. There are many options for finalizing the documents. Meeting with me is not necessary for document signing. The conventional meeting at my office in the conference room for an afternoon to read the documents, meet with the witnesses and notary public and discuss your questions is not the way to go until we have a COVID-19 vaccine. The manner of signing the documents, at this
point in time, is decided on a case by case basis. It may be appropriate to sign at my office while practicing social distancing, and wearing gloves and masks. You may choose to sign the documents “on your own”, meeting at your home with the witnesses and an online notary. We will discuss our options and choose what method of signing is best in your individual situation and depending on what documents you have that require notarization. Make a phone call today to speak with me about your legal issues and we will make an appointment and create documents that will provide a complete legal safety net for yourself and your loved ones.

On April 11, this drive-thru food distribution in South Beach, Miami saw lines of families in need arrive for crucial necessities during the COVID-19 crisis. All across Miami-Dade, local leaders have teamed up with organizations such as Feeding South Florida in order to help families get what they need. know many of you are ordering in to help support local restaurants. Often these restaurants use delivery services such as Uber Eats, Door Dash, Delivery Dudes and the like. An acquaintance of mine in Chicago who owns a restaurant points out why you should really pick up, rather than order delivery. I was not aware of the cost to restaurants using the delivery service, assuming the money I was charged by the service paid for the delivery. Here’s the letter the restaurant owner sent to her mayor to try to alleviate these costs.

“Dear Mayor Lightfoot, I own a restaurant on the Northside of Chicago. We, like many other restaurants are hurting and I know there is nothing you can do about this because being closed to diners is the right thing to do. But many of us have chosen to still do take away and delivery to stay in business, keep some staff on and pay some bills. Prior to this pandemic many of us did take away only, and would not do delivery, due to the high cost requested of the delivery companies, many around 30%. Many of us are now forced to pair up with them during this pandemic in order to stay in business. As you know the margins of restaurants are not built to give 30% to a third party delivery company. You may also have heard of organizations that are trying to help restaurants in your city by getting donations and ordering food for frontline workers from us. Off Their Plate and Restaurants Feed Heroes are among two of these wonderful organizations trying to help us. This does not work as planned when they have to utilize the food delivery companies, essentially giving these national companies 30% of the funding that was raised to help local restaurants.

I am asking you to follow San Francisco’s lead and put a cap on these fees from 3rd party delivery companies. I know it may seem that a cut to a 15% cap on their fees seems harsh but when you walk or drive through an area that has numerous restaurants open for take away and delivery 90% now are utilizing Grubhub, Doordash and Uber Eats. The increase in businesses now using them should far outweigh the cut of fees. If we are all in this together then we all need to give a little.”
Readers, when you order food to go, ask the restaurant if they pay a fee to a delivery service. If so, please try to pick up the food yourself. It may help make the difference between whether your favorite eatery survives this interruption in their regular service or not.

ome may call it a coincidence, but I believe it is something more — a lesson, an instruction, a reminder. There is a system of reading the entire Torah during the year, and each week is assigned its own portion. Currently we are reading from the book of Leviticus, a book of rules, laws, and statutes about permitted and forbidden behaviors. It goes into excruciating detail about animal slaughter, what is permitted to eat, who is permitted to touch what, all in the service of protecting the community against harm. Last week we read the verse (Lev. 10:7) And so do not go outside the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die. This message to Aaron was given right after the deaths of his sons Nadav and Avihu, who were immolated after presenting a strange fire at the altar. Even though he was the most powerful man after Moses, Aaron was forbidden to attend their funerals. He could not even wash their bodies to prepare them for burial. Moreover Aaron was forbidden to go outside the Tent of Meeting, the moveable Ark that accompanied the Israelites during their 40year journey. He was forced to watch from afar while others performed the burial rituals for his children. This week we read the special double portion of Tazria-Metzora, laws regarding women after childbirth and the rituals to diagnose and treat skin diseases. The priests were assigned the responsibility of diagnosis and treatment. Like medical workers today they balanced the needs of the patient to be treated against the need of the community to be protected. (Lev. 13:46) He shall be unclean as long as the disease is on him. Being unclean, he shall dwell apart; his dwelling shall be outside the camp. The rituals of cleansing are familiar; if the afflicted was determined to be cured, the ritual of their return to the community required: (Lev. 14:8) The one to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and bathe in water; then he shall be clean. I have a friend who works in a hospital. When they come home at the end of a shift, they don’t go into their house. They go into their backyard where an area is prepared where they can remove their work clothes, wash in their outdoor shower, put on clean clothes, and then greet their spouse.
2038 N. Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors, FL 33305, on the Pride Center campus For more information: www.EtzChaimFlorida.org or 954-564-9232 As advanced as we are, we do not know where the coronavirus originated, and our treatment of those afflicted is as robust as our ancestors’ until the patient needs a ventilator. Go home and rest. Have someone check on you. Call if you get worse. Wash your hands, maintain social distance, wear a mask in public. It seems that the biggest difference between then and now is how the patient is taken care of by the community. In the Bible, they are removed from the camp, but not removed from the people. They are treated by specialists, cared for with a specific regimen and not abandoned until their recovery and return to the camp. Today we hear actual public debates about which sector of the community to sacrifice in order for businesses and schools to reopen, with seniors being a common target. The Levitical authors, however, insisted on equal medical treatment for all, men and women, and depended on the judgements of the priests who served as physicians of the body as well as the soul. The health of the community as a whole required it; it was their main consideration, and was the standard against which other actions were judged. At a time when religious belief also contained its eras reason and science, Levitical treatment of the ill was based on equal treatment of all of its members while protecting the community against further infections. As the word “plague” occurs almost 70 times in Hebrew scriptures, our ancestors had an unfortunate need to develop efficient methods of halting its spread. Until a vaccine is developed and we manage its worldwide distribution, our response to COVID-19 is no more sophisticated than those of our ancestors — stay home, stay away from others, be in contact with a healthcare provider. The extraordinary times we are living in require us to respond in extraordinary ways. For those who find it useful, may scripture be a guide. As we all continue with work and social restrictions, may we reach new heights in our reach for greater kindness, forgiveness, and generosity towards each other.

CARE RESOURCE PROVIDES T E L E H E A LT H M E D I C A L A N D B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S REMAINING COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE CARE DURING COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients’ holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to benefit from telehealth services. In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and specifically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference. Care Resource’s Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis.
ABOUT CARE RESOURCE: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. 20

CONVICTIONS
THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT
x
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
I
n 1987, the band R.E.M published a song entitled “It’s the End of the World As We Know It.” They were a few years premature. Earth, this planet, and the world as we know it faces our greatest global crisis in over a century. The president of the United States, the man who is supposed to be the leader of the free world, opens a news briefing on the pandemic by announcing he is now “Number one on Facebook.” The man who was going to drain the swamp has become its most toxic creature. “What have you got to lose,” Donald Trump asked African Americans, in 2016, urging their constituency to vote for him. We now know the answer: your lives. I have absolutely no faith that Donald Trump will ever thoughtfully guide our country out of this catastrophe. Every day he is making things worse. The entrance at the door to Dante’s Inferno reads “Abandon all hope, Ye who enter here.” Today, I do not see light at the end of the tunnel. I see a madman and moron blocking the way. To save our lives, we must resist. This pandemic has exposed the weakness in the White House. He is not up for the job, and never has been. A TV show you can cancel weekly. We must wait until
November. That day can’t come too soon. Trump’s latest pandemic debacle is to empower those who want to protest in the streets to do so. To “save the economy,” our commanderin-chief has decided to play Russian Roulette with our lives. The president who got upset when some football players kneeled rather than say the pledge of allegiance is encouraging his followers to take to the streets and “Liberate Michigan.” Let his legions go — spreading a virus, untested and unchecked. While doctors and scientists say otherwise, Trump says “Go out and play”. Yes, go ahead. Live free and die, killing others asymptomatically while you do. Trump is right about only one thing. If he is the cure, it’s worse than the disease. If you fall along the way, you are simply an acceptable loss in the war against the Corona virus. Joe Joyce, a 74-year-old bar owner from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, and a long-time Trump supporter, was one of those victims. Joe Joyce left Florida for a cruise to Spain on March 1. He sailed to his death because that day, at a rally in the Carolinas, Donald Trump did not tell him not to go. On that day, Donald Trump, armed with months of intelligence that a deadly virus was
Not surprisingly, it turns out that these ‘anti-quarantine’ protests may not be as spontaneous as they want you to believe they are. An investigative piece published in yesterday’s Washington Post, you know that fake news journal, exposes how right wing groups backed by Trump cronies are behind the entire charade. A must read, it details how network of right leaning individuals and groups, aided by online orchestrators, tied in to huge Republican donors, are playing politics with our lives. Give them their liberty at the cost of our death. This explains the pick-ups, the rifles, the MAGA hats, and a state of mind opposed to federal or statewide mandates, perceived to inhibit their freedoms. It lends insight on why Trump can parade out social distancing guidelines at a White House briefing at 5 pm, then support anti government protestors at 6 pm. Trump’s backers and donors love it. It’s “his people” out there; his base, debasing a global health crisis and reducing it to a partisan political battle. You are not fighting for your life. They are fighting for their ‘liberty,’ How dare you infringe on it by making them stay indoors with their brothers and sisters from another mother when they can be out hunting instead.?

spreading throughout the globe, told his gleeful audience that “the whole thing a hoax.” They cheered. Joe Joyce sailed. There was a way he might have avoided the trip, his daughter Kristen told the New York Times this week. “If Trump had gone on TV with a mask on and said, ‘Hey this is serious,’ I don’t think he would have gone.” You see, Joe Joyce like millions of Americans believed in the president. They follow his lead, and they are marching to hell, but not for a heavenly cause. Scientists are on the networks daily, reminding us that the pandemic has not spiked, deaths have not peaked, and cures have not been found. Based on that, they are telling us to stay safely at home. Researchers who have studied plagues have told us as much as well. Had America a president whose voice was true and message clear, our country would listen. Instead, we have caravans of citizens arming themselves with guns, driving in pick-ups down I-95 in Daytona, holding up signs reading, “Make America Free Again.” Wasn’t Donald Trump the person who said at the Republican convention “only he can save us”? He is killing us instead. The pandemic is not tamed, hospitals are filled, and refrigerated trucks have become mobile morgues, tagging unnamed bodies by their toes. But this weekend, go get a pedicure in Georgia. America is free, open, and back in business.
History has taught us that Nero fiddled while Rome burned. If science and common sense is going to play second fiddle to presidential policies, the pandemic that is COVID will get worse, not better. Ours is a nation that has dealt with pestilence, dust bowls, hurricanes and tornadoes. We have tamed, if not cured AIDS. We have survived Polio and the Spanish Flu. There will be a day when America arrests the pandemic that is COVID 19. Like “Annie” in that Broadway show, I do believe the sun will come out tomorrow. I would like to be there for it. Unfortunately, we are not being led by a unifying force. There is no JFK asking not what we can do for ourselves, but what we can do for our country. There is a clown issuing orders about immigration. Meanwhile, in hospitals across this nation, there are doctors and nurses fighting for our lives. Still, there are patients dying every hour. Don’t forget about them when you put that suntan lotion on your face in Daytona. When Joe Joyce first got sick two weeks ago, his daughter said that he resisted a coronavirus test. “He didn’t think that he could have it,” she had told the NY Times, “because he wasn’t 100 percent confident that it was a thing.” It’s a thing, folks. It’s a thing. It’s not a hoax. The virus does not have a political viewpoint. Like Edgar Allen Poe’s 1842 short story, “The Red Masque of Death,” it has taken on a human form, and it may be hanging out in your abbey. Be ever so careful.

eing gay, transgender, or queer is as special as being a butterfly, hummingbird, or dragonfly. Anyone who told us otherwise was unaware of the full majesty of the Universe. They had insufficient imagination, not to mention curiosity. They feared the unknown. What a great tragedy it is that any time of the dragonfly’s life was spent dodging stones, as if it was a threat rather than being an extraordinary, mystical messenger of the Creator. And, what is the message? Are they ready to hear it? Are they able to understand? Throughout time, here and elsewhere, there have been spirits of many glorious colors, tones, scents, and tastes, who have flown from the consciousness of the Creator, but were sadly dismissed by those without eyes to see, ears to hear, nostrils to smell, or tongues to taste. To borrow from Thomas Gray’s Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard: “Full many a gem of purest ray serene, the dark unfathom’d caves of ocean bear; full many a flower is born to blush unseen, and waste its sweetness on the desert air.” I have always been aware of my goodness, even if I, too, feared my difference. I kept my light hidden under a bushel from fear of what would be done to me by the mob. It was not my family that I worried wouldn’t understand, but rather SOME SENTIENT the masses of blind bullies. he stage may have gone dark prematurely for award-winning costume designer Rick Peña, but he’s back at work in his sewing room on a lifesaving project. Over the past 10 years, Peña has designed and sewn thousands of dazzling costumes for Slow Burn Theatre Co. and other regional theaters. (A talented actor and singer, he’s also frequently featured on stage.) More recently, he joined the staff of American Heritage School’s nationallyrecognized theater program as resident costume designer. And, then the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of schools, performing arts centers and other public venues, just as he was preparing for two major productions. “I just couldn’t watch the news anymore,” the Fort Lauderdale resident said. “I needed to do something, but wasn’t quite sure what I could do by myself.” Then, a call came from a cousin who manages a produce company. She was seeking masks so her employees could safely continue to provide fruits and vegetables to her customers. Always resourceful, Peña found a pattern online and quickly whipped out a few masks. Jill Kratish, the Broward Center’s director of programming and a friend, then referred him to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, which was suffering a shortage of masks for nurses, doctors and other frontline workers. “I went to Walmart and JoAnn’s [Fabrics] and found some fun ‘superhero’ prints, since they’re the real heroes right now,” he said of the 50 masks he initially provided the hospital. He would go on to create colorful masks, even adding Star Wars- and Disney-themed styles as he came upon interesting fabrics. Thanks to social media, word of Peña’s inspiring contributions to the effort spread and requests multiplied. He spent hours at the sewing machine, but quickly ran out of fabric and supplies. Luckily, friends and family came to the rescue, donating hundreds of yards of fabric and industrialsized spools of elastic. His experience led him to eventually alter

his pattern as some of the hospitals requested the addition of pockets for disposable filters, so the masks could be washed and reused. Since then, he has provided hundreds of additional masks to Holy Cross Hospital, Prideline Youth Services and other essential service providers. “I’ve tried to keep it as simple as I can,” he said, but never abandoning the stylish flair that made him so successful creating eye-catching costumes. “I’m going to keep sewing until I can’t anymore. I just want everyone to be safe.” The weeks have passed quickly — he says he’s lost track of time since undertaking the project — and at last count, Peña has completed more than 800 masks. Those popular “superhero” prints he discovered weeks ago may be long gone from store shelves, but he’s proving to be an unsung superhero himself in the fight against the pandemic.

“W
e’re Here,” a new unscripted series on HBO, highlights the talents of Bob the Drag Queen (Caldwell Tidicue), Eureka O’Hara (David Huggard) and Shangela Laquifa Wadley (D.J. Pierce). In six weekly episodes, debuting on April 23, the three queens visit a small town and recruit local residents to participate in a one-night only drag show. They break out the wigs and high heels and provide their new drag daughters with support and empowerment as they encourage them to step outside their comfort zone for a night of no-holds-barred, full-on drag. The first episode takes the queens to Gettysburg, Pa., where they help a conservative Christian mother reconnect with her daughter who recently came out as bisexual. Subsequent episodes are set

Care Community
We’re here for you One of the most unique characteristics of JKV is that we function like a family. There is no us and them - we are a team. We are very lucky and blessed to be at JKV during this uncertain time as we get all our freshly made meals delivered three times a day, there are highlyqualified nurses on campus 24/7, screening is diligent and has been in place for weeks, and so much more. What could be better than that at a time like this? -- Tom McKay, resident
Connectedness
JKV is very welcoming and safe. Living here is the most comfortable we have felt in the 20 years we have lived in Florida. Mark Levey and Ken McAlice, residents
