COVID-19 SURGE CONTINUES IN WILTON MANORS AT 74 & OAKLAND PARK AT 73

C
onfirmed cases of COVID-19 surged 35% this week to 74 in Wilton Manors. One week ago that number was at 55. In Oakland Park, the number is up 15% to 73 cases. Last week that number was at 63. Two weeks ago those numbers stood at 39 in Wilton Manors and 34 in Oakland Park. “The number of COVID-19 positive cases [...] has increased significantly over the last couple of weeks,” Wilton Manors City Commissioner Paul Rolli said. “This was expected with the increase in testing.” According to the Florida Department of Health as of Monday morning, 4,794 people have tested positive in Broward County, up from 4,078 a week ago. In order to help mitigate the impact of the shutdown Wilton Manors City Commissioner Julie Carson previously told the Gazette, the city has canceled code enforcement fine accruals; parking fees in metered lots have been suspended, and online convenience fees have been waived. She also said there will be no utility shutoffs. The numbers in parenthesis are from last week. Looking at the four individual zip codes that include some portion of Wilton Manors 33305 has 62 (39) cases; 33306 has 6; 33334 has 75 (66), and 33311, which includes a large part of Fort Lauderdale has 273 (243). All of the zip codes include portions of neighboring cities. “Remember bell curves and bar graphs from school? Coronavirus numbers are still climbing the curve and the bars are rising daily,” Carson said. In comparison to Wilton Manors there have been 1,100 (922) cases in Fort Lauderdale. Meanwhile there are 32,138 (27,058) confirmed cases in Florida, more than 1 million (790,000) in the U.S., and globally more than 3 million (2.4 million). So far there have been 1,088 (823) deaths in Florida, 56,000 (42,000) in the U.S. and globally more than 211,000 (170,000).

Florida is now under a stay-at-home order and in Broward only essential businesses are allowed to operate. Additionally Broward County is now mandating the use of face coverings when visiting essential businesses for services, or are providing essential services during inperson interactions with the public. Carson also encouraged those that have the ability to donate money to give to this GoFundMe page, set up to assist the employees of Wilton Manors businesses. So far it has raised $5,111. Carson believes the pandemic will have a significant impact on the city government including a loss of $500,000 to $700,000 in revenue. Carson expects the commission to revise the budget and possibly make cuts in services. “The harsh reality is COVID-19 will negatively impact the economy of residents, businesses and city resources,” Rolli said. “City leaders must look hard at fiscal issues and priorities for the balance of this year and the next two years.”
The city manager, Carson said, is working to develop a coordinated reopening with the rest of South Florida. “We are in regular contact with Mayors and City Managers of the other local cities and with County officials,” Commissioner Rolli said. “The City is not able to reopen until robust testing is underway in concert with regional guidelines.” Manor Pines Convalescent Center, an assisted living facility in the city, has at least one confirmed case. The Gazette reached out to find out how many confirmed cases the facility has reported, but did not receive a reply by press time. “Although the Florida Department of Health does not report the number of residents at ALFs, Rehabilitation Centers, or Nursing homes who have tested positive for the virus, records reflect that Manor Pines in Wilton Manors has some positives, but all other facilities are clear,” Carson said. “These numbers remind us that we must continue to be diligent in social distancing, wearing masks, and washing hands.”

MIAMI BEACH COMMISSIONER CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY WITH VIRTUAL BROADCAST John McDonald
Miami Beach Commissioner David Richardson.
M
iami Beach Commissioner David Richardson celebrated his birthday on Sunday with a Zoom broadcast. Mayor Dan Gelber, Democratic party fundraiser Joe Falk and film and sports festival organizer Mark Gilbert all participated in the virtual celebration, extending well wishes to Richardson. Richardson used the time to talk about food distribution efforts during COVID-19. The city has been cooperating with All Souls Episcopal Church (Pine Tree Dr. & W. 40th Street) to process the food distribution to those in need. Richardson said the response has been tremendous — so much so there is a “pause” in place on volunteers. The virtual birthday party was produced by SAVE with executive director Orlando Gonzales moderating the broadcast. Florida’s first openly gay elected state representative, Richardson endorsed Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 bid for the White House. He said Biden called his election to the
Florida House “remarkable.” “He’s kissed me not once, but twice,” Richardson revealed with glee. Elected to the Florida House in 2012, Richardson served two terms in Tallahassee before redirecting his efforts to a campaign for the open U.S. House seat in Congressional district 27. Defeated by Donna Shalala in the Democratic primary, Richardson returned to Miami Beach where he won a spot on the city dias during the last election. Vice Mayor John Elizabeth Alemán — who Richardson jokingly referred to as his “coffee girl” also joined the broadcast to give happy birthday greetings. The Commissioner and certified public accountant turned 63 on Saturday.

BOYNTON BEACH WILL BECOME THE FIRST CITY IN THE COUNTY TO DESIGNATE ALL OF ITS SINGLE-OCCUPANCY RESTROOMS IN ALL CITY-OWNED PROPERTIES AS GENDER NEUTRAL. “Boynton Beach will be the first municipality in Palm Beach County to have gender neutral restrooms in all municipal properties.” Boynton Beach City Commissioner Ty Penserga, a gay man, said in a press release. Earlier this year West Palm Beach designated the single-occupancy restrooms in its City Hall gender neutral but that policy hasn’t gone city-wide yet. Palm Beach County Human Rights Council President Rand Hoch said in a press release, “Transgender, gender nonconforming, non-binary, and intersex people often face prejudice, discrimination and humiliation in their everyday lives.

‘MAYOR OF SEBASTIAN BEACH’ ROY ROLLINS DIES OF COVID-19 Jason Parsley
Roy Rollins.
T
wo of Roy Rollins’ favorite past times were the beach and the bars. According to friends he loved the sun, and he loved his drinks. Rollins’ friends also remember his unwavering kindness and generosity.
Rollins died from COVID-19 on April 17. He was 65. “When Roy came to town, every bar ordered more oranges because he had to have three slices of oranges in his cocktail,” said Dean Knapp, a close friend. While Jeff Riley, another close friend, said: “He lived on the beach. The sun and the beach were his life.” So much so that some people knew him as the “Mayor of Sebastian Beach.” Rollins was a well-known fixture in the nightlife of Wilton Manors, as well as in the LGBT community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Knapp said he’d often go from bar to bar at night visiting his favorite bartenders from Mona’s to Drynk. “The evenings always started out with me,” said Knapp, who bartends at Mona’s. “Roy supported all of the bars. But he always ended up at Johnson’s.” Rollins and Knapp met 15 years ago when he worked at the now defunct Dude’s Bar. “Every time he walked into the room, everybody smiled,” he said. Riley met Rollins more than 30 years ago at one of his “world famous” Halloween parties that he hosted each year at his home in Norfolk. “Roy was just one of a kind,” Riley said. “He was probably the kindest and most generous person you would ever come across. He did anything and everything he could for his friends, family, strangers.” Roy Rollins with just a few of his many friends.

CARE RESOURCE PROVIDES T E L E H E A LT H M E D I C A L A N D B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S REMAINING COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE CARE DURING COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients’ holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to benefit from telehealth services. In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and specifically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference. Care Resource’s Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis.
ABOUT CARE RESOURCE: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. 10

We seem to be entering a very dangerous time throughout our country. Last weekend’s demonstrations calling for an end to the public health shutdowns remind many of the unleashing of the Brown Shirts in German society back in the 1930s. Now I know the idea of goose-stepping booted young men marching down The Drive might be a pleasing thought for some. However the reality of those boots kicking down your door or smashing your teeth in is not a pleasant reality. Since Trump and his band of fascists took control of our government a few years ago, we have seen the demonization of immigrants, a rise in white supremacists, a tax giveaway to the wealthy 1%, false news, verbal attacks on anyone who questions their policies, and now an unleashing of “Trumpsters” across America demonstrating against scientific and public health policies that are saving thousands of American lives. These demonstrators draped themselves in Trump 2020 flags and banners, waved American flags, wore no face masks, and observed no social distancing as they shouted slogans mocking those who voiced a different opinion. What’s next, attacks on elected officials, smashing of windows, physical threats of citizens with a difference of opinion? Not so unimaginable in our society as we once thought. We all want to get back to work, go out and have a drink at our local bar and restaurant, have gatherings, enjoy travel and take a vacation. However we don’t want to feed a pandemic and have our neighbors, our families, our friends begin to fall ill and die because we couldn’t sacrifice a few more weeks of caution. Having all restrictions end tomorrow will do nothing for our economy if we start getting ill and death counts reach unimaginable levels. Trump and his cohorts want America back to work so that profits can once again begin to flow into their bulging pockets. These greedy peddlers, who have taken over the temple grounds, just want to get

back to exploiting the millions of now out-ofwork Americans, with no care for them, their families, and their lack of benefits, sick time, or low wages. Just look at Florida’s own Rick Scott, another recent false prophet of hard-working men and women. Many Floridians now in need of a helping hand and some assistance cannot even sign-in on the state’s website never mind actually collect some of the reemployment dollars owed to them by the state. Well, just thank good ole Ricky who deliberately left behind a broken, faulty and unfunded safety net for Floridians when he served as Governor for eight years. These soapbox orators proclaiming to care so much have shown nothing but disdain for the working families who make this country great. The fault lines in our society are definitely beginning to show. A privileged few who can self-isolate in one of their many homes, not caring about the rest of America where working two jobs, paycheck to paycheck, with no benefits, sick leave or safety net has become the new norm in the wealthiest

country we call the U.S. We spend one fifth of our national GDP on healthcare, but yet the system is absolutely broken and unable to provide the basic level of service in our time of need. Don’t be so foolish as to listen to those “Communists” trying to sell you on such a crazy notion as universal health care or some type of single payer system that would just ruin the best health care system in the world. Oh no, don’t listen to Senator Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, those radical liberals only want to ruin our great society. The proof of our bankrupted and wasteful system, drained out by the likes of Trump and Rick Scott, are all around us. COVID-19 made the obvious just a bit clearer for many. As we get closer to Election Day and the re-election of Donald Trump, I have great fear for our county, our democracy and for our future. These desperate fascist will stop at nothing as they continue to consolidate their power. Be very afraid, be very vigilant, and do not be bullied by the Brown Shirts who have become more vocal and more brazen now that Trump has empowered and unleashed them in our cities, our towns and in our psyches. Democracy and the return of power to the hard-working citizens of this great nation out from the greedy hands of mega corporations and the wealthy 1% is the only way to keep life just better here. Nursing Facility in Wilton Manors Identified as COVID-19 ‘Hot Spot’ in City By Jason Parsley New information released from the Florida Department of Health shows Manor Pines Convalescent Center at 1701 NE 26th St. in Wilton Manors as being a hot spot for the coronavirus. City Commission Divided Over Changes to City Charter Carson ‘stunned’ and ‘blindsided’ by vote By Sallie James The novel coronavirus claimed an unlikely victim on Tuesday: Commissioners scuttled a year’s worth of recommendations by the city’s Charter Review Board, citing finances and complexities related to reopening the city. Most city facilities have been closed since mid-March due to COVID-19. The nixed charter changes addressed term limits, forfeiture of office and obsolete charter language. “I don’t think it would be responsible for us as a city government to invest more time and money in this charter review process,” said Commissioner Paul Rolli, who suggested placing charter revisions on the 2022 ballot instead. “That is why I recommended it be postponed.” Rolli and Commissioner Gary Resnick
voted against the charter revisions. Commissioner Julie Carson and Vice Mayor Tom Green voted in favor. Because the city has been operating without a mayor since the Feb. 25 death of Justin Flippen, a 3-1 voted is required for a measure to pass. The failed vote made it impossible to get the proposed charter changes on the Nov. 3 ballot because ballot items have to be submitted to the Supervisor of Elections by June 8. Rolli said the city will take it up at another time in the future. But Charter Review Board members were skeptical. “It’s going to be shelved. There is an expression, ‘If you want to see something die, send it to a committee.’ This commission has talked a lot over the years about term limits, but when given the opportunity, they did nothing,” said

to determine what the high points were. And then to have Commissioners Rolli and Resnick not give it the credence it deserved.” Resnick said it would cost the city about $3,000 per charter change to place the items on the ballot. He said the city would also not have time to educate voters on what each proposed change would address. “This is not an appropriate time for us to be spending a lot of time on this,” Resnick said during Tuesday’s meeting. He said the city should focus on the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic because none of the proposed charter changes are pressing. “I’m not going to support putting any of these questions on the ballot at this time. And it’s not political,” Resnick said. WMG

Charter Review Board Chair Michael Rajner. “They just wanted to kill the thing.” Rajner said the 5-member volunteer board held 11 meetings, met monthly with the city manager to follow up and prepare the agenda, and participated in a wide range of outreach activities to educate the public over the past year. He submitted a final 222-page report on the advisory board’s findings, which included public comments. We are delaying something that has already been worked on diligently by appointees,” said Blevins, who also serves as vice chair of the Wilton Drive Improvement District. “I’m disappointed but I understand they have to make some difficult decisions. CALL OUT THE HUCKSTER SHOUT DOWN THE PRESIDENT

T
he best defense is a good offense. It is all President Trump knows. He told us Monday that we have done 5.4 million Coronavirus tests in the U.S., more than anywhere in the world. That does not cover New York City. Anything of interest happen there lately, Mr. President. We did not elect you to tell us how much worse it is in Somalia. Mr. Trump does not tell you that the tests are coming too little, too late, too many. There are 330 million Americans. We should have been leading a global task force on testing. We now know that Donald Trump celebrates his achievements, but ignores and refuses to acknowledge his failures. He gives himself a 10, though, and is Number 1 on Facebook. I wonder what the families of the 55,000 lost already to the coronavirus will grade him on November 3. I suspect it will be a big fat number 2. On Monday, April 27 at 6:13 p.m. the President once again congratulated himself for stopping air travel from China while “Nancy Pelosi was dancing in Chinatown in San Francisco.” The next time someone on Fox News brings this up as their hourly talking point ask yourself this: “if Nancy was dancing, why was she?” The answer is because the president who is a dope was being duped. He was trusting a foreign leader for years he has been saying “don’t trust.” Trump was being assured by the Chinese president that America had nothing to worry about; that everything was under control. Trump thanked the Chinese leader for his transparency, while assuring America that corona cases “would be down to zero in a week.” Four weeks later, on March 1, speaking at
political rallies, he was still calling the corona virus a “hoax.” Meanwhile, his own staffers and our own good people from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation were warning the world that a global pandemic was about to set it. The president went to India instead. When he got back and heard one of his scientists had told the press that the administration was ignoring a smoking bomb, he called the researcher “an alarmist.” Let’s lay this out where it belongs. Trump and Trump alone is responsible. He is the epidemic. This is the price we pay for making a licentious, self-centered, insecure man the president of the U.S. The White House reporters need to practice guerrilla warfare. Stand up and boldly call him a deceitful huckster. He is lying to the world and people are dying because of it. There is no room to be polite and professional. Donald Trump’s continued abuse of professional reporters is unconscionable and beyond acceptable. When one of these reporters finally stands up and calls him out, and gets booted from a briefing, that journalist will become a national hero. It will mark a day in that reporter’s history. On your cable TV screens that evening, you will see replays of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, in the 1950s, being asked the question, “Once and for all sir, have you no sense of decency?” I say, “do unto others as they do unto you.” You will be on 60 Minutes tomorrow. Donald Trump is a racist who plays up to Nazis, a sexist who abuses women, and a demagogue who demeans democracy. If you want to show the office of the presidency respect, remove him from it. All the umbrellas in the world won’t stop a

Tsunami. This pandemic would have swept through the U.S. even if Donald Trump had stopped a hundred planes from China. He has just made it so much worse than it needed to be. He denies reality day by day. Drink some Clorox if you don’t believe me. Today, he is saying, “everyone said it would blow over.” No, Mr. Trump, they did not. The Washington Post revealed otherwise yesterday. There were over a dozen presidential daily press briefings in January, February, and March that prove otherwise. Once again, you delivered deception and deceit. At the press conference Monday, Mr. Trump also said that he “alone” built the best economy “the world has ever seen.” You destroyed it, too. How is that working out for you? Trump does not mince words. Neither will I. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. So Mr. Trump, I will give you your due. You are number one. You have killed more Americans in a shorter time than any of our other presidents have ever done. Mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, all lost while you were tweeting from your toilet.
You have let your negligence bring forth one of the worst pandemics to ever touch our shores, the most significant in a hundred years. Your know-it-all arrogance and your stubborn defiance of all things scientific made happen what no other president could. You attack the press like no president ever before you, the same way you ridicule every woman who ever called you out for abusing them. You are number one at that, too. The greatest pandemic, worst unemployment, and most catastrophic collapse of a government in such a short time, with a dose of impeachment and some Lysol thrown in. The hoax, sir? That would be you. Be careful what you wish for. You got it, you are number one, in ways no American will ever forget. Unfortunately for you, and all of us, none of this is fake. It has been too real. Radio talk show hosts and publishers like me will hammer this home every day between now and the presidential election on November 3. This time all of Hillary’s emails in the world won’t save you.

ow many of you remember postcards? They were the equivalent of today’s Twitter or Facebook postings. If one went on a trip, no matter how near or far, it was “mandatory” to send a postcard to friends or family. It often said “wish you were here.” And many treasured them and collected them like baseball cards. It was a way to peek into different countries and cities, exotic landmarks one would never visit. Nowadays nobody bothers to send postcards, it is too cumbersome: you need
to buy it, find the postage stamp, find a mailbox. With a smartphone you can do it in an few seconds and you can even include your smiley face while in front of a famous monument. Those were simpler times, innocent and relatively safe. Where am I going with this? A few days ago I received a large postcard from a friend, handwritten, that I want to share with you because it deeply touched me. Here it goes:
“We went to sleep in one world and woke up in a different one. Disney is no longer magical, Paris no longer romantic, New York is on its knees, the Chinese Wall is not a fortress anymore, Mecca is empty. Hugs and kisses are suddenly weapons and staying away from friends and families is an act of love. And we finally realize that money and power are useless because they can’t give us the oxygen we need. Mother Earth still goes around and around and after centuries of being abused she has put mankind in cages with a message: “You are not needed. The air, the oceans, the sky, the birds and the forests are doing very well, or better, without you. When you eventually come out of this long dark tunnel remember this: You are my guests, not my masters.”
Your smile should leave a great impression!

FAITH & PRIDE IN MEMORIAM

ames Winder Laird of Fort Lauderdale, died April 3. He was 74. Jim attended United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale regularly. Jim’s passion was music. He knew how music impacts us. It comforts us when we are sad, gives us strength when we feel weak, lifts up joy in times of celebration, and is vital in worship, feeling and experiencing the divine. Jim assisted our church often with funding and providing special music ranging from solo artists to last year’s 36-piece orchestra from the Symphony of the Americas which accompanied our 30-person choir for the Christmas Cantata. I have a colleague who is on staff at Old Church South (a UCC church founded in 1873) in Boston and he told me that in his lifetime there they had never had a musical performance as impactful as this was here. I believe Jim’s passion and love of music was so important to him because it was a way to share something so special and meaningful to him with others. Jim was a supporter of Island City Stage since its inception. “He was passionate about the arts and always generous with the theater, recently

He was appreciated, and he will truly be missed at the theater and by me.” – Martin Childers, the Managing Director shares. Jim had seen “Altar Boyz” on the stage in Chicago years ago and was excited about bringing it to the area. The show was so successful here, it was extended a few extra weeks! We attended the closing performance together as he wanted to share that with me. I thoroughly enjoyed it as it was so professionally done and the spiritual message through music was uplifting and one of empowerment and the importance of community. Jim also had a special love for the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. “Jim was someone who absolutely loved the arts, especially music. His eyes would sparkle when he spoke about great compositions or performances he loved. He was very generous in his support of many South Florida cultural organizations, making the arts possible for our community. His passing is really sad for all of us. – Mark Kent, Executive Director. I am reminded of a quote from Plato – “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” Jim was a passionate person his entire life! Before moving to Fort Lauderdale from Wilmington, Delaware, Jim was very involved with coaching. Not the kind of coaching you may think. Stage Coaching with four horses! For some years he hosted coaching evenings, taking guests cross-country on his carriages and returning them for dinner to his own restaurant. He was a regular participant in the coaching classes at the Devon Horse Show and at other equine events and was a member of the Vicmead Coaching Club and one of its presidents.
After graduating from the University of Delaware he took a year at the Restaurant School in Philadelphia. He then moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania, and put his coach-and-four on a scheduled run from West Chester to the Marshalton Inn. His niece Margaret shared with me: “I think it was one of the most happy times in his life. When I was about 12, he invited me to ride on the driver’s seat with him for the Devon cross country coach event — he was driving his high perch Phaethon, with four unruly horses in hand. We set off at dawn and drove through the Pennsylvania countryside, down roads and across fields, finally arriving at the main ring for our spin and judging. It was a little terrifying at times, but so memorable.” Jim also pursued his love of travel, a passion developed during his childhood. He was a memorable host, and his parties and holiday dinners brought joy to his family and friends.
Jim Laird moved to the area because this was a city in which he could live freely and as himself. He loved this community deeply and will be missed. One of my favorite things about Jim was that will all his resources, he would prefer to meet at the Egg & You diner to share a meal. That’s a very special man! Thank you, Jim, for sharing your passion for life with us! Jim is predeceased by his parents, William Winder Laird and Winnifred Moreton Laird of Wilmington, Delaware, and siblings Mary Laird Silvia of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and George W. Laird of Wilmington, Delaware. He is survived by his three nieces, Margaret Lindale Laird, Alletta Laird Tate, and Irene Laird Jennings and their families; his sister’s husband, Peter Alfred Silvia; and his brother’s wife, Ann Laird Wick.

f the prospects of another month of shelter-in-place orders have you down, you can always turn to the television to pass the hours between Zoom happy hours and scrolling your Facebook or Twitter feed. Here are three new limited series worth checking out: “MRS. AMERICA” ON FX ON HULU Oscar winner Cate Blanchett takes a brilliant turn on the small screen as conservative organizer Phyllis Schlafly in “Mrs. America” on FX on Hulu. Set during the early 1970s as debate raged over the Equal Rights Amendment, “Mrs. America” is a sincere and beautifully shot trip back to the days of smoke-filled rooms where dirty political deals were often negotiated. Blanchett is joined by an A-list cast flawlessly portraying Schlafly’s liberal foils, Gloria Steinem (Rose Byrne), Bella Abzug (Margo Martindale) and Shirley Chisholm (Uzo Aduba). While Schlafly, who was surprisingly liberated herself, remains the central character, each episode focuses on the perspective of one of her feminist contemporaries. This isn’t a series to casually watch or even binge due to its detailed and contemplative nature. It will collect lots of awards later in the season for the amazing cast, design and set decoration and upbeat ‘70s score. “HOLLYWOOD” ON NETFLIX If “Mrs. America” comes across sometimes as a hazy acid trip, then “Hollywood,” the latest effort from Ryan Murphy for Netflix, is a crisp Technicolor dream. Loosely based on the real-life story of Scotty Bowers, the pimp to the stars who worked out of a Tinseltown gas station, “Hollywood” weaves together real (Rock Hudson, Henry Willson, Hedda Hopper) and fictional characters. An equally glitzy cast, including Darren Criss, Patti LuPone, Jim Parsons, Holland Taylor, Rob Reiner and Dylan McDermott, make more than mere cameos throughout the seven-episode serial. All the employees and customers of the station are starry-eyed dreamers, seeking fame, fortune and just plain respect in a revisionist vision of 1940s Hollywood where a

wealthy Jewish housewife can be a studio exec, casting is colorblind and homosexuals wield real power in the caste system. As politically correct and downright soapy as Murphy’s writing may get, the characters are still compelling. This is a fast-paced series you will want to and should binge, but don’t expect thought-provoking themes. “DRAGNIFICENT” ON TLC TLC has reworked last year’s special “Drag Me Down the Aisle” into “Dragnificent,” a sort of “Queer Eye” featuring four drag queens coming to the rescue of homely, distraught or masculine women desperately in need of a makeover. TLC surprisingly snuck the premiere out with little fanfare, making the first two episodes available on demand and broadcasting new episodes on Mondays beginning April 27. The cast features an unlikely foursome of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alums, each tasked with a special category of drag fabulousness: Alexis Michelle (makeup), BeBe Zahara Benet (events), Jujubee (fashion) and Thorgy Thor (music). The show, like its Bravo/Netflix inspiration, is fun for a few episodes but quickly runs out of gas. No matter how campy and talented the hostesses may be or horrific their subjects may be, the magic of drag somehow fades in the sunlight. Drag queens are truly creatures of the night (or at least a darkened theater) and these girls need to be in spotlights where their glitter and sequins can truly shine. But, it definitely beats reorganizing your closet or cleaning out the kitchen cupboard.
