MARK KETCHAM SAYS GOODBYE TO SUNSERVE Jason Parsley
M
ark Ketcham, the executive director of SunServe, retired from the agency last week after 10 years. Ketcham announced his retirement in March saying, “As the SunServe board’s vision and my vision begin to diverge, it is a perfect time for me to step back and make room for new blood, fresh energy and bold new ideas.” Victor Warren, the chairperson of the board at SunServe, agreed with that. “We had a difference of opinion on the direction we should go,” Warren said. One such direction is continuing to expand. “You have to keep adding programming,” Warren said. Warren credited Ketcham with growing the agency. When Ketcham started the organization had a staff of five and a budget of $300,000. Today they have a staff of 40 and a budget of $3 million. Over the years Ketcham led the way as

the organization expanded their services and diversified its programming, which now includes one of the most robust LGBT youth services department in the area. Most of the organization’s programming is funded through grants. But when the agency recognized there was a need for services and programming for the transgender community it stepped up to the plate despite a lack of funds. “The transgender department doesn’t have a funding source, so we pay for that 100 percent,” Warren noted. For now Shelley Goren will take over interim Executive Director. “Shelley has devoted her life to working with non-profit organizations, and has been successful in operational, development, and executive roles,” a press release reads. “Shelley’s wealth of experience will prove to be invaluable as she assists the SunServe Board of Directors in organizational planning
and identifying a permanent candidate to lead the agency.” Warren noted this might not be best to be changing leadership with the coronavirus crisis going on but he’s thankful the agency is not struggling financially. “We could always use more money,” he said. He’s grateful to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the annual AIDS Walk for continuing to match the fundraising dollars this year even though the event was postponed. They were able to raise $528,000, which was on par with what they raised last year. “It has been a profound honor and wonderful experience to help SunServe grow into the wonderful and well-respected agency that is today,” Ketcham wrote in March. “This could not have been done without all the unbelievably dedicated staff, volunteers and board members — hundreds of people took part.”

COMMISSIONERS TO RESIDENTS AS WILTON REOPENS:
PROTECT YOURSELF Jason Parsley
A
s Wilton Manors, along with Broward County, began the reopening process Monday Wilton Manors City Commissioners had a message for residents: it’s your responsibility to protect yourself. “Government orders cannot keep you safe,” said Wilton Manors City Commissioner Gary Resnick. “Elderly and people with medical issues should absolutely stay home. Everyone needs to take responsibility to keep themselves and people they come in contact with safe and healthy.” Wilton Manors City Commissioners Julie Carson and Paul Rolli echoed that sentiment. “Everyone must take personal responsibility for the protection of their own health and that of others,” Rolli said. While Carson said: “To be safe, we should treat everyone as though they have the virus and act as though we are sick and don’t want to spread it. Stay home if you have been exposed to someone who has the coronavirus or if you aren’t feeling well.” In a sign of good news for the city this past week Wilton Manors only saw three new cases. On the other hand Palm Beach County, which entered phase one of the reopening a week ago, has continued to see its cases of COVID-19 rise. The Sun Sentinel reported
Sunday that Palm Beach County decided to move ahead with reopening before meeting the guidelines issued by the Federal Government.
THOSE GUIDELINES INCLUDE: A decline over 14 days in the number of people with flu-like symptoms, and a 14-day decline in the number of people with Covid-19 symptoms. A 14-day downward trend in the number of infections or a 14-day downward trend in the percentage of people who test positive. The county can treat everyone at area hospitals, and the county can test all health, police and fire rescue workers for the virus. “With cases on the rise in Palm Beach County and the curve not flattening in Broward, we must approach the partial reopening with caution and care,” Carson said. While Resnick said, “It is important to emphasize that as South Florida reopens, it does not mean that the virus is gone. It seems clear that Palm Beach County opened

too early, people became complacent and did not practice social distancing.” Restaurants are now allowed to operate at a 50% capacity for inside dining. But not all are reopening. Bona Italian Restaurant will continue to only be open for takeout and delivery, while The Alibi has decided to keep its restaurant shutdown for now. Glen Weinzimer, the owner of Bona, said he’s worried Broward hasn’t flattened the curve yet, and wants to wait at least a couple of more weeks to see how the reopening goes. “We gave it a lot of thought,” he said. “But in the end we just decided we weren’t going to do it. Nothing has changed yet. This is stressful enough just being open for takeout.” The Pub in Wilton Manors though has reopened for inside dining. “Indoor and outdoor dining now available. Enhanced health protocols in effect,” the restaurant announced on Facebook. “All guests and staff must wear masks when moving about the Pub.” Tee Jay Thai Sushi, Courtyard Cafe and Matty’s Wilton Park are three that are opening for inside dining, but with limited seating. “Several businesses have mapped
thoughtful plans for re-opening and will follow all relevant guidelines to protect employees and customers,” Carson said. “Other businesses are going to wait to fully reopen in order to see if there is a spike in infections during the first weeks of Phase 1.” Carson also noted that besides personal responsibility, there is also a collective responsibility to keep each other safe. “We must take collective responsibility, remembering that in the free will of individuals there is a corresponding impact on the collective body,” Carson said. “It is ironic that in this time of separation and isolation, we have an opportunity to show our care for humankind by acting responsibly and assuming a modicum of accountability for helping to reduce the spread of this vicious virus.” Meanwhile Rolli warned that if people do follow the rules set forth from the county, and take precautions like social distancing seriously, it could lead to a second shutdown. “If there is an increase in positive virus cases, there is a distinct possibility of another complete shutdown,” Rolli said. “The reopening does not mean there is no danger and everything is back to the way it used to be. I cannot stress enough that everyone is responsible for their own health and the safety of others.”

CARE RESOURCE PROVIDES T E L E H E A LT H M E D I C A L A N D B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S REMAINING COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE CARE DURING COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients’ holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to benefit from telehealth services. In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and specifically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference. Care Resource’s Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis.
ABOUT CARE RESOURCE: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. 14

“We are pleased to offer telehealth services to our patients as a flexible way of having their healthcare needs met, whether it be questions about their symptoms, starting PrEP to prevent HIV, management of chronic illness, or other questions. We offer new and existing patients access to our telehealth visits, thereby reducing all patients’ risk of exposure to COVID-19.” — DR. STEVEN SANTIAGO, CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER

Jesse’s Journal
CONVICTIONS
CORONAVIRUS JOURNAL TWO Jesse Monteagudo
Image via Pikist.
A
few days ago, I took a break from my COVID-19 lockdown and drove up Wilton Drive. South Florida’s queer Main Street looked sad and forlorn, and unusually empty. Three months ago, the Drive was a teeming thoroughfare, full of bustling bars, restaurants, shops, and art galleries as well as people walking, running, biking, shopping, eating, drinking, dancing, or cruising. Now the shops are closed, restaurants are only open for takeout, and the few people you see on the Drive are walking, running, or biking for their health. Though the change was heartbreaking, I realized that it was necessary to protect us from a virus that threatens to kill us all. I sighed, picked up a copy of SFGN from a nearby distribution box, and returned to the refuge that I call home. Much has been written about life under the coronavirus; a pandemic that forced most humans to give up most of what we took for granted and retreat to our homes. Those who cannot do so are the people who provide essential services or work tirelessly to heal the sick or to keep us safe. For the first responders and frontline warriors in the battle against COVID-19 I have nothing but gratitude, respect, and admiration. For myself, like most everyone else I limit my outdoor excursions to shopping trips, daily walks for exercise and an occasional drive. I practice social distancing and wear a makeshift face mask made up of a “Play Safe” bandana left over from the 80s and two rubber bands that I use to hold it around my ears. My social life is mostly limited to phone calls to and from relatives and friends, though I make an exception for occasional visits to and from my boyfriend, Ron Farago. Unlike many of you, I currently live alone, without a partner, roommate or even a pet. However, I managed to avoid much of the lockdown culture that seems to have emerged to save most pandemic shut-ins from the consequences of cabin fever. Though I signed up for a couple of apps, TikTok is not one of them: I am certain that humanity does not need to see me sing or dance at home in my underwear (or less). Nor do I subscribe to Netflix, though I might eventually do so considering all the good movies and shows (LGBT or otherwise) that service provides. But if I do, I will try my best to avoid “Tiger King,” which for some reason has become the runaway hit of the Age of Coronavirus. Joe Exotic seems to be one of the most disgusting people around, even if he is gay, and his exploits
LIFE GOES ON, EVEN WITH THE CORONAVIRUS UPON US. WE JUST MUST DO WHAT WE CAN, IN ORDER TO STAY HEALTHY.

are not worth celebrating with a television show. But even Joe Exotic’s antics are preferable to Donald Trump’s daily press briefings, exercises in narcissism that Trump uses to replace his beloved MAGA rallies. The same goes for Trump’s avid follower, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose incompetence almost equals that of his idol. On the other hand, I was favorably impressed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, whom I remember for his work during the
height of the AIDS epidemic, scarf lady Dr. Deborah Birx, and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, humanized by this pandemic. Life goes on, even with the coronavirus upon us. We just must do what we can, in order to stay healthy. Though I miss the good old days, only a few months ago, I disagreed with right-wing activists and politicians who want to return to business as usual right away. It is better to be safe than sorry. Stay on the right path and hope for better days.

CONVICTIONS
THE PRESIDENT IS A TRAITOR OATHS BROKEN, HE SHOULD BE TRIED FOR TREASON Norm Kent
Photo via Pixabay.
norm.kent@sfgn.com
Y
ou may recall that snowy day in Washington, D. C., a few years ago, when Donald John Trump took the oath of office and became the 45th president of the U.S. You may remember, he reminded us then, that it was the “largest and best” inauguration ever. It was the day the lies first started, when the pandemic on truth began. It was the day the music died. Long before COVID-19 was ever discovered, Donald Trump had become a virus, defiling the oath of office he swore to uphold on that wintry day of January 2017. From the moment he took office, the president has undermined the freedom of the press. Foolishly, the media dutifully reported the attacks rather than responding to the assault. The virus got the better of us. The president’s daily attacks undermining the freedom of the press go beyond expressing a partisan political opinion. They are not within the parameters of his own right to “free speech.” They instead violate his constitutional duty and presidential oath to protect the first amendment. When the president took an oath to obey the constitution, he swore to uphold the Bill of Rights, not demean or disgrace them. He has failed in his moral and legal obligations. His duty was to defend the rights of the press, not deny them. When you take that oath, your duty is to protect contending voices, not delegitimize them. You may have your own views and opinions, and they may not be those of the media or MSNBC. That is fine — that right you have. What you don’t have is a right to sabotage
a democracy by destroying the very institutions you are legally bound to protect. To destroy the fundamental underpinnings of the independence and freedom of the press is a treasonous act. Sadly, this the president has done. In grade school, Americans are taught an axiom we ought to have never forgotten — “I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it.” Every time Donald Trump personally attacks a reporter, he sabotages that doctrine and violates his oath of office. This is more than tweeting diarrhea. This is failing to do your constitutional duty to protect one of the most treasured and sacred laws of this land. You see, becoming president does not give you more rights. It means you must protect ours, even at the expense of your own. The president is trying to build a tyrannical and ultra conservative empire that is better suited to a dictatorship. He wants to create a universe that tolerates no opinions other than his own, but the first amendment provides exactly the opposite. In America, we don’t crown kings or kneel to dictators. We overthrow them. There is a reason Donald Trump has made friends with Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-Un, and a Saudi Arabian king. They don’t have oversight or inspector generals in those countries. They have reporters disappearing in the middle of the night and slaughtered in embassies. Donald Trump respects repression, not our republic. Donald Trump has in fact lobbied for a state press which would only celebrate his achievements. He has no room for critics.
A REAL CONSERVATIVE CHAMPIONS INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND FREE SPEECH. MR. TRUMP SILENCES THEM BECAUSE HE IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE.
18
• 5. 21.2020
He silenced them with non-disclosure agreements, or paid them off with bribes. A real conservative champions individual rights and free speech. Mr. Trump silences them because he is not a conservative. He is a con artist and a crook. The U.S. constitution is his enemy, not his friend. America is aspirational. We come together as a society not to restrict the rights of any, but to secure the rights of all. The words of our constitution are to be lived and loved, not loathed. Mr. Trump does not know the difference. When a football player takes a knee, or a White House reporter poses a tough question, they are protecting your access to that first amendment. When a president refuses to answer their questions, he is
denying your rights to be heard. Donald Trump is a president who unabashedly and unapologetically demonizes contending voices. He cuts down not just his opponent, but the very debate and dissent he swore to protect. His words become treasonous, his actions criminal. When you undermine the first amendment, sabotage a free press, and knowingly try to suppress dissent, you are guilty of treason. You are a traitor, and you need to be brought before a jury. Donald John Trump, I find you guilty. Would you prefer to gargle with Clorox, bathe in Lysol, or just have a few doses of the Alibi’s newest drink, the Bleached Hydro chloroquine cocktail?
A&E THEATER
THEATER COMPANIES USE ZOOM FOR INTERACTIVE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCES J.W. Arnold
Z
oom, a video conferencing platform for business meetings and webinars, is being leveraged to create unique theater experiences for audiences stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Juggerknot Theatre Co., producers of the critically-acclaimed, immersive theater experience “Miami Motel Stories,” has partnered with New York-based PopUp Theatrics for “Long Distance Affair,” May 23 – 30. Up to five audience members at a time will enter a Zoom video conference room for a 10-minute experience with an actor based in London, Madrid, Miami, New York City, Paris or Singapore. Audiences can visit one, three or all six cities in one night or over the run of the production. “Long Distance Affair” engages the audience, as opposed to a vignette that the audience members merely sit back and watch, explained producer Tamilla Woodard, co-founder of PopUP Theatrics. “This is not a comfortable voyeurism that virtual theater can often be. You become part of the narrative,” said Woodard. “One can observe the world from a balcony in New York, fall in love in London, party in Paris…in ‘Long Distance Affair’, distance is no barrier to connection,” added Ana Margineanu, co-founder of PopUP Theatrics and director of “Miami Motel Stories: North Beach” last season. “From the intimacy of your home, in real time, 18 theater artists from six cities around the world have come together to create this one-of-a-kind virtual adventure.” In a Zoom interview from Romania, Margineanu said the concept was actually first tested a decade ago, but in a one-onone setting with audiences coming to a single location in New York City, where they engaged on individual computers with the internationally-based actors. They then moved from computer to computer to travel the world. The COVID-19 pandemic and rise of video conferencing technology revolutionized the concept by allowed both audiences and actors to participate from the safety of their own homes.

“Now with social distancing, we were flooded with emails…Let’s do this again. This is the time! We knew we needed to step up, so we partnered with Juggerknot,” Margineanu said. “The difference between watching a movie on Netflix and going to this performance is you’re interacting. Your reactions influence the actors and their reactions influence you.” Margineanu acknowledged that this type of production comes with unique technical challenges not found in a theater building: “All the pieces are in place and they’re pretty cool, if I can say. We’re working on technology and mastering the smooth experience getting 18 people into a virtual room at the same time.” Juggerknot’s Tanya Bravo feels the unpredictability of the experience is what sets “Long Distance Affair” apart from other forms of theater. “What will be the result when you and a perfect stranger meet with only a computer screen between you? Join us and make possible an impossible trip,” Bravo said.
Juggerknot Theatre Co. and PopUp Theatrics will present “Long Distance Affair” May 23 – 30 between 7 and 9 p.m. EDT. Ticket packages range from $11 - 15 for one show to $30 – 40 for three. For tickets and more information, go too LongDistanceAffair.info. 5. 21. 20 20 •

Care Community
We’re here for you One of the most unique characteristics of JKV is that we function like a family. There is no us and them - we are a team. We are very lucky and blessed to be at JKV during this uncertain time as we get all our freshly made meals delivered three times a day, there are highlyqualified nurses on campus 24/7, screening is diligent and has been in place for weeks, and so much more. What could be better than that at a time like this? -- Tom McKay, resident
Connectedness
JKV is very welcoming and safe. Living here is the most comfortable we have felt in the 20 years we have lived in Florida. Mark Levey and Ken McAlice, residents
