rindr, the gay hook-up app, is removing ethnicity from its profile filters. The change is a display of “solidarity,” Grindr officials said, with the Black Lives Matter movement and queer people of color. In a public statement on June 1, the company said it would not be silent or inactive. “Today we are making donations to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute and Black Lives Matter, and urge you to do the same if you can. We will continue to fight racism on Grindr, both through dialogue with our community and a zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform. As part of this commitment, and based on your feedback, we have decided to remove the ethnicity filter from our next release,” the company posted on its social media channels. First released in 2009, Grindr has a sorted history in queer culture with stories ranging from burglaries to marriages. In 2016, a Chinese online gaming company, Beijing
Kunlun Tech Co. purchased a majority stake in Grindr. At the time, Grindr claimed two million users in 196 countries. Last week, the U.S. government approved the sale of Grindr to San Vicente Acquisition, L.L.C. — a Delaware based investment group — for a reported $600 million. The deal was prompted by a divestment order from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to Kunlun in May 2019.

he Campbell Foundation recently awarded 10 $2,500 grants to nonprofits impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and who provide direct services to the HIV/AIDS community. “While our overall mission is cure research, The Campbell Foundation has always stepped in during times of need,” Executive Director Ken Rapkin said in a press release. “The COVID-19 pandemic is stretching local organizations’ resources to their limits and we wanted to help fill some gaps.” When the late Richard Campbell Zahn established his private, independent, non-profit organization in 1995, his goal was to support clinical, laboratory-based research into the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Now, a quarter of a century later, the Campbell Foundation has given away more than $11 million in grants supporting alternative and non-traditional avenues of research. The organization’s primary role is to prevent and treat patients with HIV/AIDS. “We have provided emergency grants following natural disasters, fast-track grants to local researchers, as well as our annual year-end [Holiday Hug] grants,” Rapkin added. Recognizing the need to fill a growing financial void in South Florida’s LGBT communities, the Campbell Foundation stepped in to assist 10 Florida-based organizations that have been impacted by the pandemic. “When COVID-19 hit, there were all of these organizations that have needs,” Rapkin said. “We didn’t know how long this thing would last, but we have the highest number of HIV infections [in South Florida] every year, so we circled the wagons and just started giving grants to organizations in Florida.” For a quick stop gap, the Foundation gave $2,500 to each organization as a one-time grant with no restrictions.

CORONAVIRUS INTERRUPTS AIDS MEMORIAL QUILT’S
RETURN TO SAN FRAN Damon Scott
T
his year the AIDS Memorial Quilt moved back to San Francisco leaving Atlanta, where it’s been housed since 2002, but its celebratory return was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, changing plans and giving one of the quilt’s founders a new purpose. A media event was held last November in Washington, D.C., to announce plans for the future of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and its archives. The overall goal of the plans is to make sure it’s all accessible and secure for generations to come. But those at the event also learned that the quilt was returning to San Francisco after being housed in Atlanta for the past 20 years. The quilt’s panels have been temporarily displayed all over the country, including Miami Beach and each year for World AIDS Day at Compass in Lake Worth. The quilt is now in the care of the National AIDS Memorial in San Francisco and the NAMES Project Foundation. The AIDS Memorial took over the NAMES Project last year, and brought all the panels of the quilt on tractor-trailers to San Francisco this year.

Now in San Francisco, organizers wanted to give the quilt its largest-ever showing April 3, with a celebration at the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. The coronavirus pandemic halted those plans. Organizers are hopeful it can be rescheduled soon. The D.C. event in November also highlighted new partners on the quilt, like the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, and honored its caretakers — including quilt founders Cleve Jones, Gert McMullin and Mike Smith. ENDURING SYMBOL The first panels of the quilt were created more than three decades ago during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S. A group of strangers had gathered at a San Francisco store to remember the names and lives of those they’d lost — names they didn’t want history to forget. Today, the quilt is perhaps the most well-known visual reminder of the AIDS epidemic, and is considered the largest ongoing community folk art project in the world. Its archives include biographies, correspondence, photographs, tributes, epitaphs, news clippings and artifacts. It was Jones who had the idea 35 years ago to memorialize the lives lost and get people’s attention. McMillan would come up with the quilt idea and be the first to sew the panels, which are still being made. It became her

At the time, many men who died of AIDS weren’t even able to have a funeral because of a widespread stigma. “We in the LGBT community understood what was happening in the early 80s. IMPORTANT FACTS FOR BIKTARVY®
This is only a brief summary of important information about BIKTARVY and does not replace talking to your healthcare provider about your condition and your treatment.
MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BIKTARVY
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF BIKTARVY
BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:
BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including: Those in the “Most Important Information About BIKTARVY” section. Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY. Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY. Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%). These are not all the possible side effects of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with BIKTARVY.
Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months.
ABOUT BIKTARVY BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements. BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine that contains: dofetilide rifampin any other medicines to treat HIV-1
BEFORE TAKING BIKTARVY Tell your healthcare provider if you: Have or have had any kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis infection. Have any other health problems. Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if BIKTARVY can harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking BIKTARVY. Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take: Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, antacids, laxatives, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist. BIKTARVY and other medicines may affect each other. Ask your healthcare provider and pharmacist about medicines that interact with BIKTARVY, and ask if it is safe to take BIKTARVY with all your other medicines.

BARACK OBAMA’S
AN EXCERPT OF
BILL CLINTON’S
GEORGE BUSH’S
STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD
STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD
STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD
“It’s natural to wish for life ‘to just get back to normal’ as a pandemic and economic crisis upend everything around us.
“No one deserves to die the way George Floyd did. And the truth is, if you’re white in America, the chances are you won’t. That truth is what underlies the pain and the anger that so many are feeling and expressing — that the path of an entire life can be measured and devalued by the color of one’s skin. Fifty-seven years ago, Dr. King dreamed of a day when his “four little children would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Today, that dream seems even more out of reach, and we’ll never reach it if we keep treating people of color with the unspoken assumption that they’re less human.
“It is time for America to examine our tragic failures – and as we do, we will also see some of our redeeming strengths. It remains a shocking failure that many African Americans, especially young African American men, are harassed and threatened in their own country. It is a strength when protesters, protected by responsible law enforcement, march for a better future.
But we must remember that for millions of Americans, being treated differently because of race is tragically, painfully, maddeningly “normal”- whether it’s while dealing with the health care system, or interacting with the criminal justice system, or jogging down the street, or just watching birds in a park. This shouldn’t be “normal” in 2020 America. It can’t be “normal.” If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better.”

We need to see each other as equally deserving of life, liberty, respect, dignity, and the presumption of innocence. We need to ask ourselves and each other hard questions and listen carefully to the answers.”
This tragedy — in a long series of similar tragedies — raises a long overdue question: How do we end systemic racism in our society? The only way to see ourselves in a true light is to listen to the voices of so many who are hurting and grieving. Those who set out to silence those voices do not understand the meaning of America — or how it becomes a better place.”

Those who threaten innocent life and property will be arrested, detained, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. A GOFUNDME PAGE SET UP TO REBUILD H.G. ROOSTERS IN WEST PALM BEACH IN THE AFTERMATH OF A MAJOR FIRE, HAS RAISED MORE THAN $47,000 IN TWO WEEKS. “I am overwhelmed by the amount which has been raised by the GoFundMe page,” said A.J. Wasson, owner of the bar. A week ago a fire broke out in the building destroying the kitchen as well as damaging other parts of the bar. Wasson estimates it will take $300,000 to rebuild

and is determined to see it through. There’s an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire, but no determination has been made yet. Wasson speculated last week a lightning bolt may have hit the building. So far over 270 people have donated to the campaign. The largest amount, $10,000, coming from Earl and Nancy Stewart, well-known for their Toyota dealerships. “I have witnessed our LGBTQ+ and supporters come together for so many years. There are so many memories that were born and shared in the building that’s known as Roosters,” said Melissa St. John, the entertainment director for the decades old bar. “It’s so much more than a building with a name. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. The heart and soul of Palm Beaches LGBTQ+ community. My heartfelt appreciation goes to all who’ve contributed, called or messaged.”

his past Memorial Day Weekend was unlike any that I have ever experienced. This is traditionally the kick-off of summer, with beaches, barbeques, picnics, pool openings and other celebrations that mark the beginning of this season. Now we cautiously enter into the reopening of our society. Instead of large gatherings, we practice social distancing. Here in South Florida our beaches are closed. Memorial day concerts and festivities were cancelled. And symbolically appropriate, it was raining; raining on our parade. Memorial Day had been set aside to remember those who died in service to our country, to the brave men and women who served their country in our armed forces. We remembered all of those who answered the call to duty, put their lives and dreams on hold so that the hopes and dreams of this great nation could survive. After 9/11, we also remembered that there are those who put their lives in danger here at home — our first responders. Those brave men and women who walk, and sometimes run, into the face of danger to help and serve others. We saluted the dedication and bravery of all who answer the call to serve the needs of our homeland. This year had a new addition to this Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday and Sunday the flags throughout this nation flew at half mast in honor and memory of the more than 100,000 Americans who have died due to the pandemic we now face. We held in our hearts their families, many of whom were not able to be with their loved one
when they died or even able to participate in celebrations of their lives. And true to the spirit of this holiday, we remembered those in the medical fields and first responders who lost their lives caring for those who were infected and suffering with COVID-19. To honor those who died in war, we place flags on their graves. To honor those who died because of this pandemic, we place masks on our faces. In both instances we pledge ourselves to this country and the ideals for which it stands. We commit ourselves to pursue the life and dignity of all. The men and women in the armed forces were asked to voluntarily give up their freedoms for a greater cause and to put on the uniform of service. Today we are asked to allow some of our freedoms to be curtailed and to put on the uniform of protecting others. Let us strive to honor our heroes by bearing these burdens with their dedication to the higher principals which are the American way of life. As people of faith, we are not only called to care for our brothers and sisters, to be concerned about the poor and weak, but most importantly to trust in God. To believe that God’s grace and power will prevail. Whatever happens, God is in control. And we remember that in our true nature we are spiritual and only physical for a short time. While the bodies may suffer, our souls are in the hands of a loving God. As you remember family and friends who have died, may the God of all consolation be with you. May the resurrected Jesus bring you peace and fill your hearts with love. And may God’s holy angels watch over you!

CARE RESOURCE PROVIDES T E L E H E A LT H M E D I C A L A N D B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S REMAINING COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE CARE DURING COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients’ holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to benefit from telehealth services. In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and specifically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference. Care Resource’s Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis.
ABOUT CARE RESOURCE: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. 18

he rag tag and motley crew of militiamen who stood up to a British empire with muskets on their shoulders were revolutionaries. Independence did not come politely. It came about because of protest. The highest form of patriotism is dissent. Silence, gay people have learned, equals death. Black slaves who started an underground railroad to free themselves from an unjust slavery did so while risking their lives. They were revolutionaries, too. Woman suffragettes who fought for their right to vote were not welcomed with open arms. They were abused and accosted, and still today, a hundred years later, are fighting for equal rights in the workplace. Coal miners in the early 1900s who formed unions to demand humane working conditions did not do so quietly. They were met by forces which tried to crush them, financially and physically. They were revolutionaries, too. In 1965, the coalition of civil rights activists who dared to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma were honoring the fatal shooting of a black 26-year-old deacon. They were met with police who sought to “dominate” them. Sound familiar? They encountered tear gas, bullwhips, and rabid dogs. There that day to exercise their constitutional right to vote, in defiance of segregationist repression, their resistance contributed to passage of a landmark Voting Rights Act. In 2020, over 150 years later, legislators are still trying to suppress their vote. It
denied Stacey Abrams her rightful place in the governor’s mansion in Georgia last year. Students protesting the United States involvement in Vietnam during a 1968 political convention in Chicago were met with a sick mayor, maniacal cops and unforgivable brutality. Two years later, at Kent State, unarmed student protesters on a college campus were slaughtered by National Guardsmen with real bullets. Black students on another campus had met a similar fate not long before then. Two years after these murders, the draft ended. Two years after that, a President resigned, and soon a war ended, but not before Weathermen torched campuses and Black Panthers made a statement about injustice. It was not a quiet time. Stonewall may be a parade in 2020, but it began with a riot at a gay bar in New York City a half century ago. Led by drag queens, a group of fed-up gays became nighttime warriors, rising spontaneously against ongoing police brutality and inhumane degradation. Fifty years later, our transgender community is still a victim of wanton violence. If this column were to synthesize the history of protest in the U.S., it would fill pages, not paragraphs. So, know this, dissent is the highest form of patriotism. A pandemic, unemployment and a tyrant are testing us. There is chaos and cacophony in, about, and around us. It has happened before, but we still got here today. We will make today’s storm tomorrow’s rainbow. Bet on it.
IF THIS COLUMN WERE TO SYNTHESIZE THE HISTORY OF PROTEST IN THE U.S., IT WOULD FILL PAGES, NOT PARAGRAPHS. SO, KNOW THIS, DISSENT IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF PATRIOTISM.

The anguish and angst you are going through is tougher today than it has ever been. Mama never promised us a rose garden, just a chance to till the field. Sow it. We get what we reap. The first amendment is at the core of our democracy. It is our constitutional right and indeed almost our duty to question authority, not deferentially acquiesce to it. None of us is better than the rest of us Independence of spirit and free will is in the American DNA. That is why some of us become astronauts and others want to know whether you are going to have fries with your Big Mac. If we have one fundamental right it is that no matter our station or stature, we have an absolute right to assert our rights, and an inalienable right to live our life the way we so choose. Be not upset by the voices that rise in anger today. Those walking in the night challenging injustice are using their voices
to say that we will not be policed by a police state. By taking to the streets and protesting injustice today, we are fighting to make our democracy more democratic tomorrow. We are telling the Donald Trumps of the world he serves us, not we, him — no matter how many Bibles he holds up. In America, you don’t even have to believe in God. America is premised upon the belief that no one of us is greater than any of us. It doesn’t come easy. Every generation is challenged, by sudden strikes or unanticipated epidemics. It is up to us to rise to those tests. We are a local newspaper, covering local news. Last Saturday, while the rest of the nation was taking to the streets, a local strip club had a group of boys in bathing suits washing cars. Excuse me, but I cannot breathe. We are who we are. We have miles to go before we sleep.

ith various states and the federal government considering easing social distancing restrictions and reopening segments of the economy, it’s important to remember that the coronavirus hasn’t gone away. That means if you’re in a high-risk group — or come into contact with people who are in a high-risk group — you still need to take substantial precautions, just as you have been for the last couple of months. Why do you need to be cautious? There is still a lot that scientists don’t know about the disease. For example, if you have had it, are you immune to it? Early studies are inconclusive. How widespread is the disease? Many people who have had the virus have never been tested, and studies show that they can spread the virus before symptoms show and even if they show no symptoms at all. The disease caused by the virus, is still very dangerous. So how do you ease back into a more normal life? Here are some tips. When the virus was first circulating in China, researchers believed that people over 65 and those with lung conditions, diabetes, heart disease and cancer — and any diseases that compromise the immune system — were at greater risk for developing life-threatening complications from COVID-19. This is still largely true, but new research has pointed to other risk factors, even for young people. Obesity, especially, accounts for a high number of severe COVID-19 cases, according to new studies. People with high blood pressure have also been hit hard by complications from the disease. People who smoke are also adversely affected by the disease. And men are at greater risk. In fact, a study in New York found that 62 percent of hospitalized patients were men. Researchers aren’t sure if gender is playing a role or if the risk men face is more related to lifestyle choices they have made. While being older than 65 is also a risk factor, the data shows that 25 percent of Americans hospitalized with COVID-19 are under 50. It also shows that many of these younger people had conditions like asthma, hypertension and diabetes. Continue to practice good hygiene. Washing your hands, wiping down surfaces and using hand sanitizer are important.
Wear a mask and wear it right. Masks haven’t been shown to offer full protection (don’t expect your mask to make you invincible), and they offer even less protection if you don’t wear them correctly. Maintain social distancing. After spending so much time at home, the temptation to go to dinner at a restaurant or have friends over or visit relatives is high. Resist it. You can control your exposure, but it is hard to control other people’s exposure. One thing researchers have learned is that the coronavirus spreads easily and especially in close quarters. Staying out of situations where you are exposed to people in tight confines will lower your risk. If you can keep practicing social distancing, do it. You’ll be safer for it. If you want to take advantage of parks, beaches and other places where people gather, go there when they are the least crowded. This is true of stores and restaurants and anywhere people gather. If you have to go out, go when things are the quietest. This should also help lower your exposure. And finally EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK — COVID-19 is passed on through droplets that come out of your mouth and nose when you cough or breathe out. COVID-19 is not a sexually transmitted infection, however, it can be passed on through kissing and close contact, including having sex. If you or a partner have COVID-19 symptoms, you should not kiss or have sex. There are lots of ways to have sexual pleasure without physical contact — try having fun with lone masturbation, sex toys, and phone or webcam sex. If you don’t have symptoms, having sex with a partner you live with is OK. If you decide to have sex with someone who doesn’t live with you, then you should take precautions to reduce the risk of spreading or catching COVID-19. STAY SAFE and remember Bleach with a splash of Lysol is not the latest Martini.

FEATURE PETS I may not be a super-model yet… but I have potential! My name is Chico (ID 630398) and I’m around five years old. I’ve had a rough life, but I know that with lots of TLC I will blossom into a magnificent hunk that will shower you with love. I’ve got patchy spots on my body where there isn’t much fur and I had to have several teeth removed because they were rotten. I really like plush toys, and will chatter when you give me one. Imagine someone with dentures trying to adjust them in their mouth, that is what I do. I’m a super happy fellow and would love someone to believe in me and give me a chance. Will it be you? Thanks to Dolly’s Dream my adoption fee is sponsored and I get to go home with goodies to help me settle in.
