he nephew of Harvey Milk on Thursday expressed his support for those who are protesting against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death. “I’m inspired by the protests,” Stuart Milk told the Washington Blade during a brief interview at a Fort Lauderdale restaurant. “I am really hopeful that maybe we can create some systemic change.” Milk spoke with the Blade less than two weeks after Floyd died after thenMinneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck. Minnesota prosecutors have charged Chauvin with second-degree murder in connection with Floyd’s death. The Associated Press notes the three other now-former police officers who were with Chauvin face charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Christopher Street West, the group that organizes Los Angeles’ annual Pride parade, has announced it will hold a march

“in response to racial injustice, systematic racism and all forms of oppression.” Milk told the Blade he “would like to see more of that and hopefully one day we can do that on our global scale.” “It’s been nine days … sometimes we see these things really light up and then fizzle out and then we move on to something else,” he said. “It’s my hope and desire that we don’t move on and that we as an LGBTQ community keep that fire burning.” “Unless there is justice for everyone in the United States there is justice for no one,” added Milk. Milk on Thursday also talked about the Trump administration’s campaign to encourage countries to decriminalize consensual same-sex relations.

The White House last year tapped outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell to spearhead the initiative. The U.S. Embassy in Germany last summer hosted a group of LGBTQ rights activists from around the world. Grenell and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Kelly Knight Craft late last year organized an event on the sidelines of a U.N. Security Council meeting that focused on efforts to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. “The campaign has had some deep back door discussions that I think are important,” Milk told the Blade. “It’s important that we keep global LGBT rights moving forward.” Milk added “its just totally unacceptable that we have over 70 countries where it’s still illegal and criminalized to be LGBT.”

NO NEW TRIAL DATE FOR ACCUSED MIAMI GAY BASHERS Jason Parsley

O

n Monday a status hearing was held for the case of four men accused of attacking a gay couple in 2018 after the closing festivities of Miami Beach Pride. No trial date was set. Instead another status hearing will take place in August. Several trial dates have been set in the past, but they’ve all been postponed. The last one was May 5. The case is now over two years old. “Although we are all working remotely, our prosecutors continue to work up their cases so that there is minimal, if any, delay in proceedings when things are back to normal,” a spokesperson for the MiamiDade State Attorney’s office told SFGN in April. The four defendants — Adonis Diaz, Juan Carlos Lopez, Luis Alonso-Piovet, and Pablo Reinaldo Romo-Figueroa — all in their early 20s, have pleaded not guilty. As the trial continues to be delayed one of the victims is growing increasingly frustrated. “I am so tired of it,” Dmitry Logunov, 34, told SFGN when the trial was delayed in January. “I want it to be over.” Here’s a recap of what allegedly happened: the attack took place when Rene Chalarca, 34, and Logunov were leaving a public bathroom in Lummus Park in Miami Beach on April 8, 2018. “We were walking and holding hands and

needed to use the bathroom,” Logunov told SFGN in 2018. So the two of them stopped at a public restroom as they headed home for the evening. As Logunov walked out of the restroom he was allegedly called a “faggot” in Spanish, punched, and then beaten unconscious. His boyfriend at the time, Chalarca, quickly intervened, but three more men jumped in and began to attack them both. “This was my first time going to a gay parade,” Chalarca said in 2018. Physically they’ve both recovered. The attack was caught on camera and the four defendants have been charged with three counts of aggravated battery and a hate crime enhancement was added to the charges. A third person, Helmut Estrada, attempted to assist Chalarca and Logunov. He was also attacked during the altercation and injured. Estrada was later given an award from the City Commission for his bravery. “Helmut’s efforts helped stop the attack but not before he himself was injured requiring a visit to the hospital and staples in his scalp,” Miami Beach City Commissioner Michael Gongora said at the time. “Helmut’s selfless act of defense warrants this honor and his stepping up and doing the right thing is even more special since he is straight, and helped defend two gay victims from an attack related to their sexuality.”

FIRE AT ROOSTERS RULED AN ACCIDENT H.G. Roosters. Photo provided by A.J. Wasson.

Jason Parsley A FIRE THAT DESTROYED THE KITCHEN AND DAMAGED OTHER PARTS OF H.G. ROOSTERS IN WEST PALM BEACH HAS BEEN RULED ACCIDENTAL, ACCORDING TO A FIRE MARSHAL’S REPORT. It was determined the fire started in a pile of soiled rags. “Based on information found at the scene and video footage provided, in all probability, the compilation of soiled rags containing an unknown amount of multiple chemicals, spontaneously ignited, which then caused the smoldering of the surrounding material,” the report reads. A.J. Wasson, the owner of the bar, added “It started in a laundry basket where we store bar towels.” The report noted there was no sprinkler system, smoke detectors or a fire alarm. The general manager of the bar was alerted to the fire because of a Fire Alert through the burglar system. Wasson and the staff of Roosters are

determined to rebuild the iconic and historic LGBT bar on Belvedere Road. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support their efforts has already raised $55,000. More than 300 people have donated so far. Wasson estimates it will cost $300,000 to rebuild the building. “I have witnessed our LGBTQ+ and supporters come together for so many years. There are so many memories that were born and shared in the building that’s known as Roosters,” said Melissa St. John, the entertainment director. “It’s so much more than a building with a name. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. The heart and soul of Palm Beaches LGBTQ+ community. My heartfelt appreciation goes to all who’ve contributed, called or messaged.” After the fire on May 19 it was revealed the company’s insurance policy had lapsed in April. “It sucks,” Wasson previously told SFGN. “But it is what it is. I can’t cry over spilled milk.” Wasson said in April when the insurance policy was about to expire his agent told him it would be $25,000 to renew, and it had to be paid upfront. At the time the bar was already closed and so he made the difficult decision to keep paying his eight employees and hold off on the insurance. “That was more important to me than the insurance policy,” he previously said. “I told my guys your rent is going to be paid, and your bills will be paid, and there will be food on your table.”

GEORGE CASTRATARO ARRESTED Accused of Stealing $625,000 From Clients

Jason Parsley

G

eorge Castrataro, a prominent gay bankruptcy attorney, was arrested Monday on charges of grand theft and fraud, accused of stealing over a half-million dollars from his client’s estate accounts. Castrataro is accused of stealing the inheritances of his clients, taking the proceeds of their estates, and instead of paying them, using it for himself, illegally spending the money on personal expenses, including dinners, car payments, mortgage payments, Uber rides, and clothing. The probable cause warrant for his arrest states that Castrataro “did unlawfully engage in a scheme constituting a systematic ongoing course of conduct with the intent to defraud one or more persons, or to obtain property from one or more persons.” Castrataro was booked into the Broward County Jail on Monday, June 8, and bonded out the same day on a $32,500 bond. The once prominent local attorney has been charged by the Broward County State Attorney’s office with a scheme to defraud, and grand theft over $100,000. If convicted on both counts, it would carry a compulsory prison sentence of at least 42 months in jail.

The Florida Supreme Court suspended Castrataro from practicing in April after an independent Florida Bar audit of his trust accounts revealed that Castrataro was lying to the Bar and his clients. The Bar sought and received from the Supreme Court an Emergency Order of Suspension, claiming that Castrataro’s conduct was “causing great public harm.” At the time, the Bar had only alleged he had “misappropriated $128,000 in clients’ funds.” Since then, Castrataro has filed a petition voluntarily resigning his membership in the Florida Bar. Castrataro’s Fort Lauderdale based law practice was focused on bankruptcy and estate planning. He had distinguished himself in the LGBT community by serving on the board of directors of numerous charitable agencies, including Care Resource. He also launched an unsuccessful bid for city commission in Fort Lauderdale two years ago. A New York native, prior to opening his law practice in 2006, he had previously worked extensively in the public health field with the Florida Department of Health and the American Red Cross.

IF CONVICTED ON BOTH COUNTS, IT WOULD CARRY A COMPULSORY PRISON SENTENCE OF AT LEAST 42 MONTHS IN JAIL.

COLUMN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

WHY YOU ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY

NEED TO VOTE THIS AUGUST Rainbow and camouflage. Photo via Adobe.

E

lection season is starting again, which for the LGBT community can mean a showdown against candidates who don’t support equal rights. When it comes to politics, discriminated groups can’t afford to stand on the sidelines because each election can move our causes forward or two steps back. For Florida’s 21st Congressional District, in Palm Beach County, I am one of two Democrats running for office, and I am proud to say that no matter who wins the primary, the LGBT community will have a staunch supporter in Congress. I was a national security staffer in Congress before running for office in my hometown, and I witnessed firsthand how many groups lobby Congress with the sole purpose to revoke LGBT rights, and how many members of Congress were swayed. So I want to applaud my primary opponent, Rep. Lois Frankel, for supporting the LGBT community throughout her career.

But many districts, both in Florida and nationwide, don’t have an ally in Congress fighting for them. I am a Navy Reserve sailor and I enlisted in 2015 under the Obama administration from a recruiting station in Delray Beach. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed four years prior, so from the start of my service I was working alongside openly gay sailors. In bootcamp, many of my fellow recruits talked about how they now felt comfortable joining the military because they could be themselves and they felt accepted. Then in June 2016, the ban against transgender service members was lifted and the whole Navy shifted in the right direction again. Immediately we received trainings educating us on transgender issues, the new policy in the military, and how to respect transgender needs in the workforce. I remember sitting in that briefing one drill weekend feeling so proud to be a sailor, and proud

GOING FORWARD WE CAN’T LET UNFIT CANDIDATES BECOME OUR LEADERS, OR WE RISK REPEATING THE PAST.

of our leaders for continuing to knock down the barriers to national service. I remember coming home and telling my wife about the training I had, and how happy I was to see the Navy making a real effort to create a safe and respectable work environment for transgender service members. Don’t get me wrong — things were still not perfect in the military regardless of the advances made under the Obama Administration. But with our leaders accepting all service members regardless of their sexuality or gender identities, I saw we were going down the right path, and we all had hope for what changes were coming next. Then Trump won the election November 2016, and shortly after his inauguration, he started the ban on transgender service members. Immediately, the transgender awareness trainings stopped, despite military leadership’s disapproval. In the end, the President had the final say.

Just after the transgender ban, I started working closely with a Navy sailor who is an active voice in the LGBT community. One day he opened up about the harsh realities of serving under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. While my colleague was deployed to Iraq after 9/11, his partner died in a car accident, devastating him. But he couldn’t mourn his loss publicly, for fear of losing his career, his livelihood, and his friends. Members of our LGBT community should never have suffered these injustices — but going forward we can’t let unfit candidates become our leaders, or we risk repeating the past. Each election is a battleground to elect those who represent our values, so whoever you support, make sure you support them on Aug. 18 with your vote. And if I am the candidate you support, know that I will always be your ally.

Guido Weiss is a progressive Democratic candidate for Florida’s 21st Congressional District in Palm Beach County and a Navy Reserve officer. Before running for office, Guido was a senior advisor in Congress, where he worked on policy related to the LGBTQ community, indigenous rights, veterans care, healthcare, environmental protections, national security, and other issues. Guido was born and raised in Wellington, Florida.”

ome stories affecting the LGBT community have flown under the radar in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic One of those stories concerns a set of lawsuits that came out of the Pulse Nightclub shooting — specifically regarding the employer of the shooter. The Pulse Nightclub was the site in Orlando where a horrific mass shooting happened on June 12, 2016. It’s where the shooter killed 49 people and wounded 53 others. Orlando law enforcement shot and killed the man after a three-hour standoff. Almost four years later, a Florida State appeals court in April dismissed negligence lawsuits that had been filed against the shooter’s employer — G4S Secure Solutions (USA) Inc. The decision, handed down by a threejudge panel of the Florida 4th District Court of Appeal, is considered a defeat for Pulse survivors and representatives of those who died in the shooting. The decision upheld a previous ruling by a Palm Beach County circuit judge, who dismissed the lawsuits against G4S. The shooter had been employed by G4S, based in Palm Beach County, for almost 10 years as a security guard, court records show. The shooter carried a gun on the job and had a Class G firearms license, which requires 28 hours of classroom and range training. The lawsuits argued alleged negligence by G4S, stating that it had been notified that the shooter was unstable and dangerous and had expressed a wish to commit mass murder against people in the LGBT community, court documents said. The complaints also alleged that G4S had a “duty to make an appropriate investigation of their prospective employees prior to, and use due care in, hiring them, providing them with firearm training, retaining them as employees or obtaining/maintaining their Class G firearms licenses, but failed to do so [with the shooter].” But the appeals court disagreed with the plaintiffs’ arguments — in its sevenpage ruling — that the facts of the case

established that the company’s actions “created a broader zone of foreseeable risk” to the victims as members of the public. The ruling said the shooter did not use weapons owned or controlled by the G4S and that the shooter would have been able to buy the type of weapons without the Class G license he held for his job. “Finally, [the plaintiff’s] duty arguments fail for one more important reason: [The plaintiff’s] failure to provide any sort of limitation on the legal duty they seek to impose,” the ruling written by Judge Burton Conner said. “Failing to provide any sort of boundary for the employer would have severe public policy implications. As both G4S and the trial court noted, [the plaintiff’s] failure to provide any sort of spatial or temporal limits in the articulation of their concept of duty would essentially result in G4S being strictly liable and an absolute guarantor of [the shooter’s] behavior while off duty at all times.” Meanwhile, the Pulse Memorial and Museum, commemorating the victims, is set to break ground in 2021 and open in 2022. The museum will not only honor the Pulse victims, but will also be a tribute to the struggles of the LGBT community at large for equality. The site of Pulse Nightclub will be preserved as a permanent memorial while the museum and an education center will be located about a third of a mile away.

NEWS

MUSICAL ‘FROM HERE’ TO MARK PULSE TRAGEDY ON JUNE 12 ‘IT CHANGED EVERYTHING’

Damon Scott

T

he four-year anniversary of the mass shooting in Orlando at the Pulse Nightclub is June 12.

It is the site where a shooter killed 49 people and wounded 53 others. Orlando law enforcement shot and killed the man after a three-hour standoff. To mark the date and commemorate the victims, a taped version of a live performance of the new musical “From Here” will be presented online on June 12. The event benefits Equality Florida and is part of the national campaign — #HonorThemWithAction. Organizers are also using the event as a way to promote 2020 voting efforts. The musical will be shown at 9 p.m. EST at FromHere.com and EQFL.org/fromhere. After the June 12 showing, organizers said it will remain available to view through June 28. The musical was filmed during its world premiere performances at Central Florida Community Arts in Orlando in February and March, before performances stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a high-quality live recording of the full-length musical, fully staged in front of an audience. While the presentation is free,

viewers are encouraged to donate to the #HonorThemWithAction campaign. From Here writer, Donald Rupe, said the musical is inspired by his own lived experiences. He describes it as emotionally charged with regard to family and relationships, and as a tribute to the Pulse Nightclub, a place that was a centerpiece of his formative years. “When I decided to write something about my friends and I, it became clear that I couldn’t authentically do so without acknowledging the role that Pulse Nightclub played in our lives, both before and after the tragedy,” Rupe said in a statement. “It changed the way we viewed our lives and each other. It changed everything.” The opening act begins with Daniel, a 30-something gay man living in Orlando, who is navigating a difficult relationship with his mother and his perpetual search for love — (mostly in the wrong places). Daniel is funny, nerdy, and has a tightknit group of friends who are his chosen family. The musical takes an emotional turn as its characters learn of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. It changes the way Daniel and those around him see the world. The second act recounts how Rupe and his friends heard about the shooting

and the days that followed. They share memories of their times at the nightclub. Rupe notes that the musical does not depict any violence or the names or details of any of the victims, survivors, or their families. “The only story I can tell is my own,” Rupe said. “It’s important, sometimes, for artists to pay tribute to tragedy; to memorialize so that we never forget; to document grief through art.” Rupe said the second act is his attempt to honor the victims, to show that what happened to innocent people will never be forgotten, and how it changed the lives of so many. The musical ends with a wiser, more mature, more hopeful Daniel. “We’re all from here,” he says, realizing how tied together his community is. “‘From Here’ is a powerful work of art that effortlessly lays out the complexity of moving through the world as a queer person and the fragility of life,” Brandon Wolf said in a statement. “It is an honor to

partner with the team and continue helping to create a legacy of advocacy in the wake of the Pulse tragedy. Each of us is tasked with honoring the 49 victims not simply with words, but with action.” Wolf, Equality Florida’s media relations manager and an early supporter of the musical, is an LGTB rights advocate and an activist for common sense gun legislation and gun safety. He is also a survivor of the Pulse shooting. “Daniel’s story is in many ways Orlando’s story, and it’s an important reminder of one of our city’s most difficult moments,” Rupe said. “I’ll never forget how the world came together to show their support of our community here, and it felt like we belonged to a larger family. For many of us in June 2016 it felt like the whole world was ‘from here.’ This show, I hope, is a message of resilience, and I think the world needs that message now more than ever.” Note: The Pulse Memorial and Museum, commemorating the victims, is set to open in 2022.

SCHOLARSHIPS

FIRST 49 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS TO HONOR PULSE VICTIMS REVEALED Damon Scott

J

une 12 marks four years since the mass shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando that took 49 lives and injured 53 others.

Much has been done since that time to honor the victims and preserve their memory since the horrific event took place in 2016. One initiative is the “Legacy Scholarships” — and a first round that has just been completed. Forty-nine students have been chosen to receive the scholarships “to honor the aspirations of all 49 Angels who died that day.” The onePULSE Foundation recently announced the inaugural class. They will receive $333,000 in scholarship awards for academic opportunities and were identified as recipients who “embody love, hope, unity, courage and unconditional acceptance.” The scholarships are to be used during the 2020-2021 academic year. The onePulse Foundation is the nonprofit that was established following the tragedy. Representatives from onePULSE worked with the families and loved ones of those killed to establish the scholarships based on the respective victims’ interests, careers or aspirations. “As an extension of their impact on our world, the scholarships will inspire and empower students who share similar dreams, ambitions and goals,” onePULSE said in a statement. Scholarship preference was given to applicants who are immediate family members of the 49 victims, as well as all of the survivors of the tragedy — thus three family members and three survivors were

awarded inaugural scholarships. Pulse survivor and scholarship award recipient Amanda Grau said that because of the bravery of first responders who saved her life after she was shot four times, she now wants to save other people’s lives. “It has always been a passion of mine to be a firefighter and paramedic,” Grau said in a statement. “I am currently a patient care technician and an EMT and I have finished fire school as well. My next goal is to become a paramedic and the [scholarship] has given me the opportunity to fulfill that dream.” Shepherd Drayton, whose sister — Deonka “Dee Dee” Drayton — was killed, is a third-year medical student who wants to work to eliminate prejudicial biases from the practice of medicine, like ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identification, or socio-economic status. His goal is to form an alliance with doctors across the country that share similar beliefs. “I believe this scholarship will undoubtedly help me accomplish my goals,” Drayton said in a statement. “Not only does it provide me the means in which to continue my education, but it also affords me the opportunity to carry on my sister’s legacy, and one day fulfill her destiny. A destiny full of love … and acceptance for everyone.” The scholarship committee was comprised of 17 community members. The foundation said it considered many factors when assessing applicants, including their personal story, financial need or independence, academic or selfimprovement interest, and track record of leadership, community involvement and/ or work experience.

More than 200 applications were received. The inaugural class represents incoming freshman majoring in business, communications and the performing arts, as well as cosmetology, nursing, medical and master’s students. “Each of the committee members reviewed the applications with pride and care and was passionate about the support of the candidates,” committee chair Cathy Brown-Butler, who is also a onePULSE board member, said. “These 49 Legacy Scholarships will indeed open doors, change lives and carry on the hopes and dreams of the Angels.” The scholarship initiative is expected to take place each year and be funded for up to $10,000 each to be used at an accredited institution of higher learning, including career and technical schools. Funders include AdventHealth, AlixPartners, the Earl and Bettie Fields Automotive Group Foundation, Gucci, Orlando Health, PVH Foundation and Wendy Trammel. The foundation is also spearheading a memorial and museum expected to open in Orlando in 2022.

BRANDON WOLF EMBRACES ACTIVISM, ADVOCACY

AFTER PULSE [Editor’s note: This story is a reprinted from November 2019. Brandon Wolf was also named SFGN’s Local Person of the Year for 2019]

randon Wolf was wrapping up a phone call with Florida State Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith before his Mirror interview in early fall.

“When he calls, the world is on fire,” Wolf said jokingly after the call ended. Smith represents House District 49 in east Orlando. Like Wolf, he is a community activist. Smith is a Democrat and was the first openly gay Latino to serve in the Florida Legislature. “He was elected right after Pulse,” Wolf said.  All photos courtesy of Brandon Wolf, pictured left.

REMEMBERING PULSE | Pulse, of course, is the Pulse Nightclub — the site in Orlando where a horrific mass shooting took place on June 12, 2016. It’s where a shooter killed 49 people and wounded 53 others. Orlando law enforcement shot and killed the man after a three-hour standoff. Wolf was one of about 320 people inside the LGBT venue that evening on “Latin Night,” along with two of his closest friends, Christopher Andrew “Drew” Leinonen and Juan Guerrero. Leinonen and Guerrero were both killed. Wolf escaped through one of the club’s doors with others who had been hiding in a bathroom. His life not only changed in an instant, but would also start to travel down an unplanned path. Wolf was thrust into the spotlight and into a role he didn’t seek. Since Pulse, he’s been sought after for comment and analysis by every kind of media and has been interviewed on national TV on LGBT issues, and gun reform. It’s all catapulted him into a career of activism and advocacy. Earlier this year, Wolf was named the development officer and media relations manager for Equality Florida. ACTIVISM UNLEASHED The 31-year-old was recently an invited guest at CNN’s Democratic presidential town hall in Los Angeles that focused exclusively on LGBT issues. Brandon Wolf (right) with Drew Leinonen (left) and Juan Guerro.

“The candidates actually had a significant amount of time [to speak],” he said. “A majority of the candidates agree on the meat of the [LGBTQ] issues. All of them are leaps and bounds beyond what we have today.” Wolf said he’s worked with Julián Castro and that the campaigns of Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren have reached out to him for input. He said all three have “pretty comprehensive plans” on things that matter to him and much of the LGBT community. One of those issues is gun reform. Soon after the Parkland shooting, the Florida Legislature passed, and former Gov. Rick Scott signed, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. The act tightens gun control, school security and school safety. It banned bump stocks and raised the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, among other restrictions. It also allowed teachers who receive training to be armed. “It was a double-edged sword,” Wolf said. “You don’t want schools to be a prison, but reinforcing schools is important. Good things came out of it, but most troublesome has been the arming of teachers.” Wolf said the state gave schools the power to arm teachers, or not. As a result, almost none opted in through the first year. “We dodged a bullet because the schools did the right thing, but on the second year the state has put incentives in place for

school districts to take part. If they want extra funding, they have to have armed teachers,” Wolf said. The situation now, as he describes, is that to receive a measure of financial stabilization, schools in underprivileged areas essentially have to arm their teachers. “Put all of that in the melting pot and we’re ripe for a very bad situation for schools in Florida,” Wolf said. “Think, for example, of a white teacher in majority black school who feels threatened.” Wolf said that while certain politicians did a good job of selling armed teachers as an answer to the problem after Parkland — it is a wholly untested theory. “We’re skipping right to human trials,” Wolf said. “There is no evidence that arming teachers in schools makes them safer. But we’re going to test the theory around live children?” As part of his work at Equality Florida, Wolf does grassroots organizing to push back on the idea and get it changed. “People connect with Brandon because he is real and vulnerable and authentic and he makes the most of any opportunity to deliver a vision of a world free of discrimination and normalized gun violence,” said Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality Florida. “He

is willing to speak truth to power, whether on national TV or a private meeting with politicians. And he is just as relentless working tirelessly behind the scenes and out of the spotlight to make real and lasting change as well.” EYE-OPENING ORLANDO Wolf grew up in Portland. He left for Orlando when he was 19 to be a part of the Disney College Program. While he intended to move back to Oregon after a short time, it only took about nine months before he would fall in love with the city, with Florida, and with himself and his identity. Wolf came out in Portland during his senior year in high school. “I had a small group of friends — the experience was not one where there was a huge community or networks of people to talk to,” he said. “Portland is a beautiful place, but it’s homogenous. As a mixed-race LGBTQ person I didn’t get to explore much of my identity when I was there.” For example, he said, in his high school of about 2,000 students, 11 were black or mixed race. He was one of four mixed race or black teens in his graduating class.

REMEMBERING PULSE | By contrast, Florida is a melting pot, especially Orlando, Wolf said. “Folks are visiting all the time, Spanish, Portuguese. I’m a huge foodie, too. It was a transformative experience,” he said. After the college program, he signed a full-time contract with Disney for five years — being cast in parades, shows and doing various forms of entertainment. In high school, he’d worked for Starbucks and he’d do that in Orlando as well, especially after he felt his run with Disney was coming to an end. “I’m a person who needs to feel connected to other people. At Disney, I’d see guests for a moment and then they’re gone. Starbucks afforded me the opportunity to get to know people,” Wolf said. ROAD TO EQUALITY In 2012, Wolf was promoted into Starbucks management, first as a store manager and then opening a new store in Orlando’s Lake Nona community. It was during that time that the Pulse shooting happened. After a recovery period, he was promoted as a Starbucks district manager eventually overseeing 16 stores, including in Tallahassee, where Equality Florida has a strong presence, especially during the Legislative sessions. “Before Pulse, I didn’t know who Equality Florida was,” Wolf said. “But immediately after Pulse, Nadine reached out to me.” Smith is an LGBT activist and has led Equality Florida since it was founded in 1997. “We met at a Starbucks and she asked me what it was I wanted to be doing with my life — how did I want to impact other people?

Did I want to be an advocate and activist all the time?” Wolf said. Over time the relationship grew and was nurtured. Wolf got on Equality Florida’s steering committee and volunteered. He operated largely behind the scenes doing his own personal advocacy. “Especially after Parkland, I got to a place where it felt like activism and advocacy were mingling. Nadine said there was the right position, and it was the right timing,” he said. Smith added: “One of the things I love most about my job is the amazing and talented people I get to work with. Brandon has clarity of purpose, a fearless resolve to do what is needed and the humility to know success is always a team effort. That powerful combination has made him a force for LGBTQ equality and in the crucial work of breaking the lethal grip of the gun lobby.”

BRANDON WOLF

Top two photos: Brandon Wolf. Below: Brandon Wolf (right) with Drew Leinonen.

‘YOU GO THROUGH THESE MOMENTS’ Wolf’s work at Equality Florida is all encompassing, but he continues to assist his nonprofit — the Dru Project. The project began about a month after the shooting when Wolf launched a GoFundMe page to help subsidize funeral costs for Leinonen’s mother and Guerrero’s parents. He set a goal to raise $10,000, but almost $100,000 came in.

“Especially after Parkland, I got to a place where it felt like activism and advocacy were mingling. Nadine said there was the right position, and it was the right timing.” - BRANDON WOLF ON JOINING EQUALITY FLORIDA

Leinonen’s mother wanted to use some of the funds to create a legacy for her son. “He was proudest that he created the gaystraight alliance at Seminole High School,” Wolf said. “He was passionate about LGBTQ issues and young people.” The Dru Project provides scholarships to LGBTQ individuals and supports gay-straight alliance groups in schools. Wolf’s capacity to help lead the group has tapered a bit since taking on his role at Equality Florida, but he still stays connected. Meanwhile, the Pulse Memorial and Museum, commemorating the victims, is set to open in 2022. Wolf said he didn’t really know what to expect when he recently searched for the designs online. “I am floored by how truly stunning those designs are,” he said. “It’s on the size

and scale of the African American History Museum [in Washington, D.C.].” The museum will not only honor the Pulse victims, but will also be a tribute to the struggles of the LGBTQ community at large for equality. The site of Pulse will be preserved as a permanent memorial while the museum and education center will be located a third of a mile away. “When you lose someone, the thing that keeps you up at night and fear the most is that you’ll forget them,” Wolf said. “You go through these moments. You desperately search for video so you can hear them, for pictures so you can see them.” Wolf still visits the Pulse site sometimes. He lives three blocks away. “I usually do it when I know people won’t be there,” he said.

ollowing the success of a two-day virtual Pride festival last month, South Florida Pride organizations are continuing the celebration through the month of June with a series of live-streamed, weekly happy hour concerts. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation or postponement of their festivals, Miami Beach Pride, Gay Ocho Festival, Pride Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride and Compass/Palm Beach Pride formed the South Florida Pride Collective and took to Facebook Live and Twitch on May 9 - 10 to offer an alternative during the shutdown. The virtual festival featured live and recorded performances by more than 90 singers, entertainers and drag artists and attracted 65,000 views around the world. The effort also raised nearly $15,000 for COVID-19 relief. Proceeds were divided equally between the organizations and have funded food and personal hygiene items, health and wellness services and financial grants for people who lost their jobs or were affected by the economic shutdown. “The virtual pride festival was such a big success. With Pride month coming up, we saw the opportunity to go beyond parties and continue to address the urgent needs in our community as they related to COVID,” said Damian Pardo, founder of the Gay Ocho Festival and coordinator of the new series. The Friday evening happy hour concerts, June 5-26 from 5-7 p.m., will feature the most popular performers from the May festival with donations again benefitting the Pride Collective’s COVID-19 relief efforts. Among the scheduled performers are Emmy and Grammy winner Albita, international recording artist Cascada, jazz superstar Nicole Henry, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fan favorite Latrice Royale, dance music artist Lucy Grau, and gay singer Steve Grand. During the broadcasts, the Pride Collective organizations will also address racism, social justice and the massive public protests that resulted following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

Local Pride organizers will present weekly virtual happy hour concerts on Fridays in June. The webcasts will raise funds for COVID-19 relief in the local LGBTQ community. Photo via Adobe.

“Pride Month celebrates the Stonewall Riots, triggered by police brutality against LGBTQ people more than 50 years ago,” explained Pardo. “With the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing protests, we realized we needed to encourage real conversations and focus on change.” Gay Ocho will be donating their proceeds to Circle of Brotherhood, a Miami-Dade organization dedicated to community service, economic development, crime prevention, conflict resolution and mediation, educational services, and youth mentorship in the African-American community. Morgan Stanley is the presenting sponsor for the series, along with iHeart Radio, AIDS Healthcare Foundation and Jack Daniels, and donations are being collected by Our Fund Foundation in Wilton Manors. The South Florida Pride Collective presents streaming Pride Month Happy Hour Concerts on Fridays from June 5-26 at 5 p.m. at Facebook.com/PrideCollectives and on their website at PrideCollectives.com. Taxdeductible donations can be made online or by texting SFLPRIDE to 44321.

‘LOVE, VICTOR’ IS A SWEET STORY FOR PRIDE MONTH J.W. Arnold

C

her isn’t the only one with a wish to turn back time. We’ve all pondered what it might be like to return to high school — with the caveat that we would know then what we know now. Many of us might not have waited to come out, avoided that toxic first boyfriend or made similarly life-changing choices. That’s just a silly fantasy, of course, but “Love, Victor,” the new series from Hulu, offers a look at contemporary teen life — but these angst-filled teens know everything we know now, thanks to the internet. Based on the groundbreaking theatrical release “Love, Simon,” the streaming series is much less sequel and more spin-off. Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School, the high school featured in the movie, undertakes his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation. Simon (Nick Robinson) has become somewhat of a celebrity at his high school alma mater becomes Victor’s pen pal and spirit guide, thanks to email and Twitter. Over the course of 10 30-minute episodes (all available for binge watching on June 19), Victor must cope with the cross-country move from Texas and revelations about a parent’s marital infidelity, all while navigating the halls and unwritten social strata of a wealthy and surprisingly diverse suburban school outside Atlanta. The series, from “This Is Us” executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger,

who wrote the movie, proves that the more things change, the more they stay the same, as the old adage goes. Despite Simon’s heroic first kiss atop the ferris wheel to the cheers of fellow students at the winter carnival, the term “gay” is still a slur in the locker room. The mean girls are still mean, but their sharp-tongued gossip travels further than the cafeteria doors via blogs and social media posts. The student body is still divided into popular kids and the other castes. Victor and his sister Pilar (Isabella Ferreira) are not distinguished by their skin color or heritage, but their perceived “poverty.” Surprisingly, the one out kid at the school, Benji (George Sear), is a handsome and stylish stud who is a part-time barista and plays in a band. He’s cool and Victor is smitten, but cannot bring himself to admit his affection, let alone open himself up to judgement by his peers. None of the storylines are new in this updated “ABC After School Special.” (Disney also owns Hulu, but passed on the series for its own streaming channel, citing family friendliness issues.) And these types of idealized coming out stories have been the centerpieces of LGBT film festivals for decades. What does make the series work is the onscreen charisma of Cimino. He connects with the audience and very quickly has them rooting for his success, no matter what telenovela-esque twists his story takes. Will Victor find love with the boy of his dreams? No spoilers here, but let’s just say writers are working on season two.
