IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT DESCOVY (des-KOH-vee) This is only a brief summary of important information about taking DESCOVY for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). This does not replace talking to your healthcare provider about your medicine. MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT DESCOVY FOR PrEP Before starting and while taking DESCOVY for PrEP: • You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested for HIV immediately before and at least every 3 months while taking DESCOVY. If you think you were exposed to HIV, tell your healthcare provider right away. They may want to do more tests to confirm that you are still HIV-negative. • Many HIV tests can miss HIV infection in a person who has recently become infected. Symptoms of new HIV infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. Tell your healthcare provider if you have had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or while taking DESCOVY. • DESCOVY does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to reduce the risk of getting STIs. • DESCOVY by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. Do not take DESCOVY for PrEP unless you are confirmed to be HIV negative. DESCOVY may cause serious side effects, including: • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking DESCOVY, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking DESCOVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check or give you HBV medicine.

ABOUT DESCOVY FOR PrEP DESCOVY for PrEP is a once-daily prescription medicine for adults and adolescents at risk of HIV who weigh at least 77 pounds. It helps lower the chances of getting HIV through sex. DESCOVY for PrEP is not for everyone: • It is not for use in people assigned female at birth who are at risk of getting HIV from vaginal sex, because its effectiveness has not been studied. • You must be HIV-negative before and while taking DESCOVY for PrEP. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Do NOT take DESCOVY for PrEP if you: • Already have HIV infection or if you do not know your HIV status. If you have HIV-1, you need more medicine than DESCOVY alone to treat HIV-1. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF DESCOVY FOR PrEP DESCOVY can cause serious side effects, including: • Those in the “Most Important Information About DESCOVY for PrEP” section. • New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with DESCOVY. The president ignored it. Instead, in a cheap shot, Trump stripped LGBT people of protections in healthcare. On Friday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finalized a rule that removes non-discrimination protections for LGBT people in health care and health insurance. Nikki Fried, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Florida’s only statewide elected democrat, blasted Trump’s callousness. “There are no coincidences with this administration. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued an order proclaiming June 12 to be Pulse Remembrance Day and also ordered all flags to be flown at half mast Friday in honor of the victims. “The State of Florida will not tolerate hatred towards the LBGTQ and Hispanic communities, and as Floridians we will stand united against terrorism and hate of any kind,” the proclamation reads. Florida Congresswoman Val Demings, whose district includes the site of the shooting, tweeted. “There is no better way to honor those we lost in the #Pulse shooting than to #HonorThemWithAction,” Demings tweeted. “There are so many ways to get involved, but here’s the easiest: take five minutes today and make a specific and precise plan on how to go vote this year.”

21, also known as Slammers, is up for sale. 321 is a private sex club for gay men on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. In the early 1990s the establishment was operated by George Kessinger, as the original “Georgie’s.” The list price is $1,795,000, which includes the business, building, land, and an adjacent parking lot. “I was the first bartender hired at 321 in 2007, and worked my way to owning this amazing business,” owner John Pradon said in a press release, announcing the listing. “I’d like to see it continue … but it’s now time for me to explore other interests and opportunities.” 321 is known as a “bottle club,” where customers pay for the set-ups, but bring their

own alcohol, and have the bartenders serve it to them. It’s just one of a handful of bottle clubs still left in Broward County, and the only gay one. The premises has also been grandfathered in as one of the last standing private sex clubs in the state. Years ago, it had a full-service restaurant and would host live shows.

FIRST-EVER PRIDE FLOTILLA PLANNED FOR JUNE 21 Denise Royal

f you thought all of this year’s Pride events were canceled because of COVID-19, think again. On Sunday, June 21, Pride Flotilla will take place in Fort Lauderdale. It’s planned to start along the Intracoastal and New River waterway beginning at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park at 1 p.m. It’s scheduled to wrap up at the basin in front of the Broward Center of Performing Arts. Many boats plan to be decorated in celebration of Pride. COVID-19 forced the cancellation of many Pride events, including Pride of the Americas. But once South Florida’s boat ramps and marinas reopened to recreational boaters, Patrick Parker and Scott Schramm conceived a plan for the flotilla. The group will depart Sunrise Bay adjacent to Hugh Taylor Birch State Park at 1 p.m. and make its way south along the Intracoastal Waterway, before proceeding west up the New River. “This has the opportunity to grow over

the years into a very fun, large party,” said Schramm in a press release. The flotilla is much more than a show of boats. “It represents that we as an LGBT community are still united in furthering equal, and just rights,” Jeremy Pettus of Boys with Boats said. “They have graciously included Boys with Boats, along with our boat owning membership.” With the number of public spaces, and parks along our planned route, people are able to responsibly witness, and show support along the way.

he Our Fund Foundation, South Florida’s only LGBT community foundation, recently announced they received three legacy gifts totaling almost $10 million. “We are extremely humbled and grateful for these generous and thoughtful legacy gifts,” David Jobin, president and CEO of Our Fund Foundation, said in a press release. “We are proud to fulfill their wishes and will work diligently to ensure their contributions are fiscally managed to have a lasting and meaningful impact.” One-hundred percent of the funds will go towards providing critical aid to LGBT nonprofits South Florida. These legacy gifts come from Kay Maunsbach, Frederick (Ted) Emery and James Laird. “Our Fund encourages individuals and

families to be as purposeful with their giving after they are gone as they are while living,” Mark Blaylock, chief financial officer of Our Fund Foundation, said in a press release. “We offer specialized services and guidance to help individuals craft a legacy fund that reflects their values and goals.”

SCOTUS HANDS LGBT PEOPLE HISTORIC VICTORY WITH EMPLOYMENT RULING Lisa Keen

n what is perhaps the most stunning U.S. Supreme Court victory in history for LGBT people, the nation’s highest court has voted 6 to 3 that a federal law barring discrimination on the basis of “sex” also prohibits discrimination based on “sexual orientation” and “gender status.” The court’s decision in three cases testing the reach of Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act came in one 33-page opinion consolidated under Bostock v. Clayton County. In words that will no doubt be highlighted for many years to come, Justice Neil Gorsuch (a Trump appointee who replaced the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia) wrote: “Ours is a society of written laws. Judges are not free to overlook plain statutory commands on the strength of nothing more than suppositions about intentions or guesswork about expectations. In Title VII, Congress adopted broad language making it illegal for an employer to rely on an employee’s sex when deciding to fire that employee. We do not hesitate to recognize today a necessary consequence of that legislative choice: An employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender defies the law.”

“This is a huge victory not just for LGBTQ people, but for our country,” said National Center for Lesbian Rights legal director Shannon Minter. “Today’s decision will be remembered as a watershed in the history of LGBTQ rights, even as our country continues to grapple with the brutal legacy of racism.” “The Supreme Court agrees with the straightforward reading of the law that we’ve been advocating for years,” said Jenny Pizer, senior attorney for Lambda Legal. “The words on the page say no workplace discrimination because of sex. There’s no way to understand those words that exclude sexual orientation or gender identity. It means essential job protection for millions of LGBT people. Legislation has been pending in Congress for more than four decades, attempting to establish protections nationwide; but, the legislation — which has taken on different forms — has not cleared Congress. Donald Zarda, the plaintiff in the Altitude Express case, died in 2014 in a parachuting accident. He was 44. Gerald Bostock, 56, said his job with Clayton County, advocating for child abuse and neglect victims, had been his “dream job.” The county fired him for “conduct unbecoming” after he joined a gay softball league. The loss of the job also meant the loss of health insurance, just as Bostock was recovering from prostate cancer. Reached recently, Bostock said he is currently working as a mental health counselor for a Georgia hospital. TITLE VII IN HISTORIC CONTEXT

Court’s clarification that it’s unlawful to fire people because they’re LGBTQ is the result of decades of advocates fighting for our rights. The court has caught up to the majority of our country, which already knows that discriminating against LGBTQ people is both unfair and against the law.” But Esseks cautioned, “Our work is not done. There are still alarming gaps in federal civil rights laws that leave people — particularly Black and Brown LGBTQ people — open to discrimination in businesses open to the public and taxpayer-funded programs. Congress must affirm today’s decision and update our laws to ensure comprehensive and explicit protections for LGBTQ people and all people who face discrimination.”

“THE COURT HAS CAUGHT UP TO THE MAJORITY OF OUR COUNTRY.”

June has often brought Supreme Court decisions of monumental importance to the LGBT community. For many years, with the pivotal vote of then-Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court ruled that states could - James Esseks not bar same-sex couples from DIRECTOR, NATIONAL ACLU’S LGBTQ & HIV marrying (Obergefell v. Hodges, PROJECT 2015), the federal government could not bar recognition of same-sex couple marriages (U.S. v. Windsor, 2013), and states could not bar same-sex couples from having intimate relations (Lawrence v. Texas, 2003). Not all LGBT decisions have been good ones for LGBT people. In 2017 (in Trinity Lutheran v. Comer), the majority ruled that church schools should receive the same grants as state schools even if they discriminated against LGBT people. In 2018 (in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado), it hinted it might be open to allowing small businesses discriminate against LGBT customers by claiming a religious exemption. The scope of the Bostock decision potentially sweeps far beyond Title VII’s protection in employment and will likely be cited by courts interpreting similar “because of sex” language in many other statutes. “This is a huge victory for LGBTQ equality,” James Esseks, Director of the National ACLU’s said James Esseks, director of the National LGBTQ & HIV Project. THAT MEANS THIS YEAR’S PRIDE MONTH OBSERVATIONS WILL LOOK DIFFERENT THAN IN YEARS PAST. Despite the pandemic, Compass continues to provide nearly all of our services, through remote options and phone calls which replace in-person meetings and appointments. Zoom calls have replaced in-person meetings for support groups, therapy sessions, and youth group gatherings. We are committed to continuing our work with no reduction in staff or hours, but we have lost two of our largest fundraisers this year, Palm Beach Pride and the Stonewall Ball. Our ability to continue offering these services that we have provided to our community for 30+ years is at risk. We need your help. Our goal is to raise $30,000 this month. Each dollar we raise will go to critical, life-saving services that Compass provides directly to our community. Please donate at www. compassglcc.com/support On June 27, instead of getting together for our Stonewall Ball, we are asking our community to participate in our Stonewall “Stay the Heck Home” Ball. hough we have all taken different paths in life, we share many basic rules of the road. A communicable virus that is highly contagious and easily transmissible requires all of us to respect our shared destinies now more than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic cuts across class and political allegiances. Like passengers on a plane, we have a common interest in the pilot landing successfully. None of us should care who Dr. Fauci votes for. As we were raised, we grew up adapting to certain fundamental and unwritten rules. You yield the right of way to cars that got to the intersection first. You give up your seat on a crowded bus to an elderly patron. You wait on line at the supermarket. You take a number in the bakery. Respect for others is a fundamental premise of our lives. A civilized country requires we compromise for the common good. You just do certain things without asking. It’s how we all get along. Some things, we just know. Try not to sneeze into someone else’s coffee. Don’t cough into someone else’s face. Don’t spit on the floor in front of your grandmother. Though it has heightened our consciousness immensely, we did not need a pandemic to have a healthy respect for hygiene. We have known to wash our hands since we were little kids. Must of us stopped drinking water from faucets long before the pandemic started. And almost all of us hate ever having to use a public toilet. In the new age of COVID-19, let me add a new set of Norm’s unwritten rules. They are

simple and easy to follow. I wear a mask to protect you. You wear one to protect me. That’s not asking too much, is it? Just keep your microscopic viral droplets to yourselves. I will be okay with that. A pandemic has stolen a 115,000 American lives in less than six months, and yet a vast number of our citizens think we are producing a new episode of Toy Story. I don’t think so. The newspaper obits and admissions to the Broward General ICU say otherwise. So do the exponentially rising rates of COVID-19 in South Florida. View the chart on page 6. We have grown up in a world full of germs and during our lives, and have dealt with a variety of flus, illnesses and viruses. The gay community knows this more than most. Germs are everywhere, not just in the White House. We can be grateful that our bodies develop an immune system to ward most of these invisible invaders off. So far, COVID-19 is not buying into the playbook though. That means, caution, not carelessness, has to remain the rule, not the exception. Hold off on that Muscle Beach Party for July 4. Every generation faces its unique battles with disease. From polio crippling the 1950s to AIDS invading the 1980s, America has faced challenges with sickness and health. Until Donald Trump took over the White House, we had science and reason on our side. It’s been an exhausting few months, but try not to become a victim of quarantine fatigue. Just because you close the door on reality does not mean it won’t sneak in through the window. Opening up our restaurants and bars may jump start our economy and reduce catastrophic unemployment numbers. It won’t stop an invisible virus from getting you

I WEAR A MASK TO PROTECT YOU. YOU WEAR ONE TO PROTECT ME. THAT’S NOT ASKING TOO MUCH, IS IT?

sick, sometimes seriously so. We take risks with our lives every time we step out of the door in the morning, but just remember COVID-19 did not abide by the President’s Easter deadline. Nothing about the pathogen’s power has changed since it silently landed upon our shores. Go to work, but please don’t be fooled by a discounted Sunday buffet at your local grill. There is still no cure and no vaccine, only many trials and lots of experiments. Because we are more aware, there are more ICU beds available if we need them; more skilled nurses and better prepared hospitals. There are also civilian doctors who have witnessed more deaths in the past 15 weeks then soldiers in a war zone. You learn as a little kid not to play with fire, because it burns. This virus kills, and pretty quickly for seniors — too many of whom were World War II veterans, spending their last days in shared, assisted living facilities. It

was not fair. Neither is life always so. Unfortunately, wherever crowds gather in closed quarters, there have been many victims of the virus. We have seen that with the Winter Party, convalescence centers and now, prisons. Next month, the coronavirus is likely to claim victims from protest rallies and political conventions. The present administration has delivered a lethal circuit of lies. Don’t fall for its deception or deceit. The corners are marked and the roads are lit. The numbers are real. There is truth at every intersection. Read your local paper. Focus on the facts. Fox News is as bad as the plague, unless you want to hear that Hillary’s emails started the fire. Be spiritually connected and socially distant. Hug less. Wave more. Practice safe talk. Walk your dogs. Love your friends. Be safe, not sorry. Basic rules. Live them and stay healthy.

WILTON MANORS COMMISSIONER GARY RESNICK ACCUSED OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT By Sallie James The owner of Johnsons, a strip club in Wilton Manors, has accused City Commissioner Gary Resnick of using his position to get away with inappropriate sexual conduct during a June 28, 2017 business meeting at Resnick’s home. At the time, Resnick was the Mayor of Wilton Manors. According to a police report, Resnick offered to massage club owner Matt Colunga during the meeting, saying the businessman looked stressed. Resnick then directed Colunga from an outdoor patio to his bedroom, where he pleasured himself on Colunga’s back, exclaiming, “I love my job” as he “blew his load,” according to the police report. Resnick, who is the longest-serving member of the City Commission and the longest-serving mayor, said in a written reply that the allegations are “politically motivated and false.” Resnick was first elected in 1998. “The police looked into this and noted there was nothing to pursue and closed the case,” Resnick wrote in a text. “Mr. Colunga has supported me through my political career. He even hosted a fundraiser for me and asked me to be in a movie about his club. I am truly disheartened by this false allegation, that is rooted in political malice, from someone who supported me in the past.” Colunga confirmed that he did host a fundraiser for Resnick because Resnick portrayed that all the other commissioners

wanted to shut Colunga’s business down. The 60-year-old told police he couldn’t remember if Colunga ever came to his house, could not recall if the two went into his bedroom, said he never forced Colunga to do anything and denied massaging Colunga or touching him, saying “it did not happen.” When police asked Resnick if he had any sexual interaction with Colunga, Resnick stated “he did not recall/couldn’t remember, then said no,” the report said. Colunga has said he felt he was in an “uncomfortable position” given that Resnick was the Mayor. Colunga is not pressing charges but wants Resnick to resign, and is worried that he has done the same thing to others. Colunga said Resnick reached out to him on Facebook in 2017 and the two exchanged several messages online before agreeing to meet. Colunga said he wanted to find out what he needed to do to get his business opened. He saved the message thread and shared screen shots of the exchange with the Gazette. “We should discuss what you have in mind,” Resnick wrote in a June 22, 2017 post. Colunga replied, “That would be great. Thought it would be easier if I asked lots of questions and followed all the rules. But the club I used to run put a shadow on me.” On June 28, Resnick wrote, “Was going to reach out but stuck putting together a new bed today. Ug.”

“Need help? Lol. Just let me know and I’m there,” Colunga answered. The two met on Resnick’s back patio but Colunga saw no evidence of any furniture in need of assembly. When Resnick began massaging him, Colunga said he felt trapped and didn’t know how to react. He never confronted Resnick about the 2017 incident for “fear of retaliation with his business” and the “embarrassing nature of the incident.” Colunga said he left Resnick’s home immediately after the incident. Colunga told police he filed the May 21 police report after becoming upset when he watched Resnick publicly berate Commissioner Julie Carson at two recent City Commission meetings. Colunga told police that Resnick should not be a commissioner and should resign. In late April, Colunga shared details of the incident with his friend Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, hoping Trantalis would put political pressure on Resnick to resign, but nothing happened so he filed the police report in late May. Trantalis did not return a phone message on Thursday before press time. “I felt intimidated. Of course he [was] the mayor, he [was] the man in charge of the town where I want to open up my business,” Colunga said of the incident with Resnick. “And he wanted to massage me. What do you do? If you say ‘No, I’m sorry, this isn’t my thing,’ is your business going to open up? Gary didn’t stop at the massage. Gary decided to go further with it.” Colunga, who is married, added, “He must

have done it to other people. I can’t be the only one.” Commissioner Julie Carson declined to discuss the matter. “I really don’t have a comment. Matt is a friend of mine and this is a tragic event for anyone. It’s certainly a sad time,” she said. The police report notes that the State Attorney’s Office indicated that simple battery would be the only crime possible, if there was evidence such as witnesses or photographs, of which there were none. The statute of limitations for simple battery is two years from the time of occurrence, and that has expired, the police report notes. “[Colunga] believes he currently has nothing to lose as for him coming forward right now,” the police report states. “The police told me to delete my Facebook,” Colunga said in relation to the ordeal. “I unfriended [Resnick].” WMG

OPINION

HE WHO LIETH DOWN WITH DOGS …  Wilton Manors City Hall. Photo edited by Brendon Lies.

“….Mayor Resnick made such a big deal about a local business owner making a $5,000 donation to our city’s Leisure Services Department. Yes, that’s a good amount of money, and such a donor should be recognized and thanked by the community. However, the Mayor went out of his way on this one. What makes this whole scene a bit unusual is that this owner operates Johnson’s, the questionable nightclub right on Wilton Drive. He is also a very large donor to Mayor Resnick’s campaign for City Commissioner and has hosted a campaign event at his home. So, if you operate a questionable business in our community, have outstanding code violations, and want to send a message to city staff about how well you are connected to the elected officials, what better way to do it than appear in front of everyone at a City Commission meeting with a large check in hand. None of this might be the case, but appearances do matter, and this one is just a bit too much, even for Gary Resnick. “

The recent allegations by Johnsons’ nightclub owner against Commissioner Resnick might appear credible to many in our community. The tale that Matt Colunga weaves could very well have happened; could be exaggerated; could be

By Sal Torre There are numerous metaphors one can use to use in an attempt to portray cautionary advice upon our elected officials here in Wilton Manors. “For they who lay down with dogs, shall rise with fleas,” is one that comes to mind. The message here is that one should be cautionary of the company one keeps. I did not sit down to write this article seeking to judge, or throw stones concerning the recent salacious headlines this past week in SFGN. The “glasshouse” I call home is certainly no temple of moral authority. However, when you choose to serve as an elected official and position yourself as a leader of the community, you better be ready to handle the wrath of public opinion and scrutiny. The reality is appearances do matter, as I pointed out back in 2018 in a Wilton Manors Gazette piece, when certain individuals appeared to be too close for comfort in the public arena of local politics:

imaginary; or could be a tad of vengeance from a soured relationship between business owner and city official. However, looking at the timeline and recent events, I find much to question. In a post MeToo world, we are all more aware and educated when it comes to accounts of sexual misconduct by those in a position of power and privilege. If Commissioner Resnick used his position in our community to take advantage of anyone, such behavior is unjustifiable and inexcusable on any level. However, Matt Colunga seems more like someone who would have slammed Gary against the wall with just one hand, walked out of the bedroom and moved his business down the road to Fort Lauderdale’s NE 4th Avenue if he truly felt what he is currently stating to the news and in a police report. Instead, he hosted a fundraiser for Gary’s election, gave Gary a cameo appearance in his movie, and donated money to Gary’s campaign. Mutual benefaction or victimization, fellow Islanders, I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions. Now on to Julie Carson’s part in all this. Matt stated that he’s coming forward now with his allegations because of the way Gary has been treating Julie in recent commission meetings. He feels a need to be Julie’s knight in shining armor, riding to her defense against the big bad Gary Resnick. Looking from a different angle one might view such

chivalry as cozying up to the possible new Mayor of Wilton Manors. My preference is for our Mayor to stand on their own two feet. Additionally, while local businesses and non-profits were barred from holding events due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Julie posted pictures with Matt and the boys from Johnsons holding a car wash fundraiser, which was not permitted by the city she represents. That might be something to consider before posting on Facebook. Looking to other news here in our Island City, recent Black Lives Matter protests took place in our city this past Saturday and Sunday. These peaceful demonstrations highlighted the work that still needs to be done in many communities throughout South Florida as we strive to be better human beings. COVID-19 numbers are still climbing in the region and should still be a major concern for everyone. Even though Pride month celebrations are not taking place due to the restrictions, we have much to be proud about especially with our recent Supreme Court victory! Candidates for local municipal elections are now final, with qualifying dates closed this past week. Three candidates for Mayor and six candidates for the two City Commission seats. As we move ahead, hold on to your hats fellow Islanders, ‘cause the next few months leading up to our municipal elections are shaping up to be one hell of a show. Such is what makes life just better here. WMG

LET TER TO THE EDITOR

I BELIEVE MATT COLUNGA. GARY RESNICK IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. THESE THINGS CAN COEXIST. By Bryan Wilson SFGN posted an article online last week titled “Wilton Manors Commissioner Gary Resnick Accused of Sexual Misconduct.” It revealed that “the owner of Johnsons, a strip club in Wilton Manors, has accused City Commissioner Gary Resnick of using his position to get away with inappropriate sexual conduct during a June 28, 2017 business meeting at Resnick’s home. At the time, Resnick was the Mayor of Wilton Manors.” Area residents and neighbors started commenting on this online article. These comments are important. They reveal some very toxic tenants within the culture of our community. People lost no time in victim shaming and judging Matt for his career in adult entertainment and even jumped to allege that Matt himself is a sex worker; whether or not Mr. Colunga engages in sex work, I neither know, nor care. It’s irrelevant to him coming forward with his experience of sexual abuse. Commenters on the story all but said that Matt was asking for it by wearing a short skirt and being such a loose woman of the night... Look, it’s no secret to any LGBTQN+ community member in South Florida that sex, slut, and body shaming thrives within our supposedly progressive and sexuallyliberated rainbow family. In addition, most of us are painfully aware that classism runs deep in our community as we watch folks go into debt (or jail) as they struggle to live in the reality that wealth is necessary to be all that you can be in the LGBTQN+ community; it’s particularly necessary for the success and well-being of gay men. We can do better, y’all. We can also do more than one thing

at a time. We can believe Matt and not pass a guilty sentence on Commissioner Resnick. In response to these comments, I’d like to set the record straight (definitely no pun intended). Sex workers can be sexually assaulted, especially when their ability to consent is taken away by people with the power to hurt or support their business. What you wear (or don’t wear) does NOT give people the right to sexually harass or assault you — even strip clubs have rules that exist to protect the health and safety of their workers. Just because Matt appears to be a strong, fit guy with the ability to “stop” his attacker, that does not shift responsibility for the sexual assault from the attacker onto the victim/ survivor. The decision to outright DISBELIEVE someone coming forward to say they were sexually assaulted flies in the face of everything we supposedly learned from the #MeToo Movement and #Ibelieveyou efforts. Remember that whole Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh thing? Believing sexual assault survivors does not mean passing a guilty sentence on Resnick. It means creating a place where people feel safe to come forward about sexual assault/harassment and know they will NOT be told they are not believed because of the clothes they wear, work they do, or the privilege they have/don’t have. It’s creating a community where one’s position of power and authority does not make them immune from the consequences of their action, nor gives them a license to harm others as they do whatever gets their rocks off. Stop telling survivors of sexual assault

STOP TELLING SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT OR HARASSMENT HOW THEY SHOULD REACT AND START TELLING PEOPLE IN POWER HOW TO ACT.

Matt Colunga (left, courtesy of Matt Colunga) and Gary Resnick (photo via Facebook).

or harassment how they should react and start telling people in power how to act. Matt doesn’t have to press charges or call for anyone’s resignation to legitimize his story. Perhaps his goal is just to create a safer climate in which survivors of sexual misconduct may come forward to tell their stories. Maybe he just wants us to acknowledge the sexual abuse going on in our own gay community and do something about it. If you’re someone’s boss, don’t hit on them or try to engage in sexual activity with them. Full stop. If you’re someone’s elected representative, don’t offer them massages or even attempt to get consent for sexual activity with them. Full stop. If you are someone’s professor, don’t ask a student out on a date. Full Stop. When you are in a position of power over someone, you can never remove that power dynamic from the situation. Your power to shape their economic future, fire them, or fail them… well, it makes it almost impossible to tell your boss to stop

propositioning you, say no to a date with your professor, or refuse a massage from your Commissioner as a business owner. Your power takes away another’s full ability to consent. Matt didn’t have to share his story. He was/is brave to do so. It says a lot about him. You don’t have to believe sexual assault and harassment survivors when they come forward. But whether you do or not — it says a lot about you. If you’re feeling convicted, don’t feel bad. Do something about it. Honor survivors with action. Seek conversations with leaders in the movements aiming to make this world a better place and society more egalitarian. Together we can do this. We can be better. WMG Sincerely,

BUSINESS

NEW OWNERS TAKE OVER RON’S BARBERSHOP By Jason Parsley Shane Macha and Al Craig have purchased Ron’s Barbershop located at 1220 NE 4th Ave in Fort Lauderdale. “We are very excited for a new beginning for a barbershop that has a great brand,” Macha said. “We are going to keep the same great price structure.” The shop’s tagline is “home of the $10 haircut.” Macha said they’re keeping all of the barbers on staff as well. The barbershop was engulfed in controversy in March when Wilton Manors City Commission candidate Chris Caputo led a protest against Ron Cerreta, the owner at the time. An argument between Cerreta and a trans employee had turned physical and the police were called. Caputo took to the streets to bring awareness to violence against trans people. “We’re excited to invite clients back home,” Macha said. “And lots of new ones.” WMG

FAITH & PRIDE SPIRITUALITY

A TIME FOR CHESED Rabbi Noah Kitty

Graphic via Etz Chaim.

Congregation Etz Chaim

I

have spent decades in Jewish and LGBT community work, learning about and employing all sorts of revolutionary programs that brought in great amounts of money and offered a wealth of promised results, only to repeat the cycle of programming year after year, decade after decade while the problems either remained the same or morphed into something even more toxic. Eventually it seemed to me that there must be an error in how we are thinking and acting in our attempts to ease social pain and inequalities. How was it that the same situations that we read about in the Bible are still with us today; we remain burdened with hunger and homelessness, the poor treatment of the widow and orphan, economic slavery, spotty healthcare, and environmental destruction. Ecclesiastes was right, there’s nothing new under the sun, and no matter what we do we are fated to do it over and over with the same results, like a mashup of the Matrix and Groundhog Day. And then I remembered that I am God’s creation and in this way am linked to Eternity. I asked myself, how can someone linked to Eternity be limited to one understanding of how the world worked. And then I remembered what we are taught about the Torah; the Sages tell us there are many valid interpretations to the Torah. The Midrash writes that there are 70 “faces” (interpretations) to the Torah (Bamidbar Rabbah 13:15). With this many ways of interpreting verses in our sacred literature, I became convinced there had to be more than one way to interpret the world. This idea gave me hope, because it seemed to me that since humanity started keeping records thousands of years ago that we have interpreted the world through the lens of Gevurah, the sefirah of Divine Judgement. Jewish mystical literature describes a series of 10 traits or characteristics that bridge the gap between heaven and earth. It is said that

these traits are in a dynamic relationship with one another, and if any of them become out of balance the effect is felt in heaven and earth. Gevurah is understood as God’s mode of punishing the wicked and judging humanity in general. It is the foundation of stringency, absolute adherence to the letter of the law, and strict meting out of justice. This means that we qualify the worth of an issue in front of us depending on where it falls in our system of judgement. For example, we think it is terrible that someone had a car accident. Then we learn they were driving at night, and we starting wondering whether they had good night vision, they should have known better than to drive at night. Or maybe they were speeding and lost control, and you feel a little less bad for them since they really did it to themselves. And then they need time off from work and extra help at home, and really why should you be responsible for helping someone who should have known better and damaged themselves. Or the many excuses for sexual assault, where the perpetrator defends themselves by claiming the victim asked for it by the way they dressed or walked or just appeared. Or we think that it is terrible that a person was gunned down in the street, until we learn that it was a black man who was shot and the police pulled the trigger, and all of a sudden it is maybe not so terrible since the guy probably deserved it. We all accept the concepts of kindness and forgiveness, love and acceptance. However, despite the fact that our sacred scriptures insist that we are all equally deserving of love and care by our Creator, we force our fellow humans to stand and bow in supplication before us so we can determine whether they truly merit our love and care. This attitude is in oppositional contrast to Chesed. It is the quality of grace, of lovingkindness, of giving without concern for the worthiness of the recipient. It is said

I BELIEVE WE HAVE ARRIVED TO WHERE WE ARE NOW DUE TO OUR ATTACHMENT TO JUDGEMENT.

22

• 6 .18.2020

that God created the world through Chesed. Another example is going to a funeral, since the person whose death you are marking will never be able to return your kindness. Thus in viewing the world through the lens of Chesed we are only concerned with the need at hand. If you are hungry, then we feed you, rather than ask why you can’t feed yourself. If you are sick, we heal you, rather than tell you to figure out how to pay out of pocket. The essence of Chesed is that it is not earned, and cannot be earned. You are not ever entitled to Chesed, since entitlement assumes a judgement that you are deserving. According to this worldview, every person on the planet, every plant, rock, and drop of water, exists due to God’s Chesed. Studying these two traits it seemed to me that we are out of balance when it comes to the relationship between Gevurah and Chesed. We have organized ourselves around Gevurah. As a result we are always judged and judging others, who are typically judged lacking and thus are punished. Despite our system of assuming innocence before proven guilty, we have literally made ourselves into the judge, jury and executioner of others. If you want to know what a “law and order” world looks like, you are looking at it now. I am calling for a turn to Chesed. I believe others are turning to it as well. I see how we in the U.S. and around the world are responding to the death of George Floyd. Of course it’s not just George Floyd, it’s hundreds of years and tens of thousands worth of George Floyds. The marches and protests have continued for weeks, even in the face of social distancing. There has not been any (or much) co-opting crowds for the benefit of other left- or right-wing movements or organizations. Blessedly and with humility, left-of-center organizations that have routinely accused each other of impure politics and nefarious intent have essentially remained silent except to voice support to the idea that black lives matter. Messages of support that black lives matter have poured in from all expressions and denominations of religious communities. Folks who are bitter opposites on issues like abortion or immigration can hold hands together in the belief and practice that black

lives matter. Public and private companies are issuing statements of support, such as the one from Ben & Jerry: And it’s clear, the effects of the criminal justice system are not color blind… Rather, we believe it is due to the systemic racism built into the fabric of our institutions at every level, disadvantaging and discriminating against people of color in ways that go beyond individual intent to discriminate. For this reason, we are not pointing fingers at individuals; we are instead urging us to come together to better our society and institutions so that we may finally fulfill the founding promise of this country: to be a country with dignity and justice for all. I believe we have arrived to where we are now due to our attachment to Judgement. The time is now to give Loving-kindness a chance.

SUPPORTING LGBT FAMILIES REQUIRES THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER Dana Rudolph

B

lack lives matter. Black LGBT lives matter. And we will never have a just world for LGBT families until we have racial justice. Black same-sex couples are roughly twice as likely as White same-sex couples to be raising a biological, step, or adopted child, according to UCLA’s Williams Institute. And 50 percent of children under 18 living with same-sex couples are non-White compared to 41 percent of children living with different-sex couples. (Statistics were not available for other LGBT identities). Even if the numbers were far less, of course, these families would still deserve equality and justice — but the numbers underscore just how many LGBT families are impacted by ongoing racism in our country. Racism is a formidable enemy, though, sometimes overt but often subtle. I can only speak to it from my perspective as a White person with a White child, but here are some of the things I am trying to do — and resolve to do better — to help dismantle it. I offer them as suggestions for others engaging in this work as well. Educate myself. My day job is with a nonprofit program focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, which requires a fair bit of reading on the subject, but I’ve found there’s always more to learn about racism’s history, impact, and the perspectives of those impacted. I continue to read, consume podcasts and videos, and listen to colleagues and friends of color when they choose to share their thoughts. There are a lot of good resource lists on racism going around right now, but I want to caution us White folks not to get caught up in feeling that we need to get through every article, book, movie, and podcast on a multipage list before taking action. Educating

ourselves on racism is an ongoing process. We shouldn’t feel we need to “finish” (no one ever can) before getting out into the real world and trying to make a difference. We should also not see resource lists as ends in themselves or view our progress through them as a sign of how “woke” we are. Read and listen humbly. Know there is always more. I’m not going to offer my own list here, as there are many others already, but if you need a place to begin, I suggest the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s new Talking About Race portal, which can easily be found with an online search. Self-reflect and self-improve. I try not to be racist, but as a White person, I know there are times when I am, albeit unintentionally. And simply by my privilege as a White person in our society, I am tainted by the systemic racism woven into its fabric, benefitting me in ways I may not even realize. This is not a reason to flagellate myself; instead, I need to ask what I can do to be more thoughtful about my words and actions, to use my privilege to be a better ally and accomplice, and to work towards a more just world. Teach my son. One of the most important anti-racist actions parents can take, I believe, is to show our children how to be anti-racist as well. My spouse and I have tried to teach our son not only that people of all skin tones are to be valued and respected, but that his peers of color may have very different experiences in the world because of systemic racism. We want him to be thoughtfully color aware, not color blind. We’ve tried to expose him at every age to books, shows, and movies that not only include characters of color, but that are told from their perspectives. Hand in hand with finding “diverse” media,

RACISM IS A FORMIDABLE ENEMY, THOUGH, SOMETIMES OVERT BUT OFTEN SUBTLE.

however, we parents should talk with our children in age-appropriate ways when we find biases and lack of representation in any children’s media. Why don’t we see people of color here? How is this character a stereotype? And how can we see representation in one way but biases in another? My suggested place for parents to begin is EmbraceRace (embracerace.org), which offers not only resources but also a community of support for parents, teachers, and others of all racial identities. Additionally, on the Oprah Magazine website, award-winning author and Black queer mom Jacqueline Woodson has offered a list of recommended books on racism and race for children of all ages. (Go to oprahmag.com and search for “Jacqueline Woodson.”) These are just starting points. Take action in the world. First, we should each speak out any time we see racism, from overt slurs, to subtle microaggressions, to lack of representation in workplaces, schools, and other venues. That

necessary work can be supplemented by attending rallies and vigils, signing petitions, contacting our elected officials, and donating money and time to civil rights organizations and others that work with marginalized communities, as we are able. One extensive list of “Ways to Help” is at blacklivesmatters. carrd.co. Yes, we may not always do or say the right thing; we may feel awkward; we may stumble. We should not let these fears keep us from doing anything, however. We need to come into the work knowing it is a process and being willing to listen, apologize, learn, and keep trying. Pride was born from protest and resistance, led by people of color like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major, and Stormé DeLarverie. Many of our LGBT families would not exist today if it wasn’t for the smoldering revolution that they sparked into open flame. May we honor their legacy as we work for inclusion, equality, and justice.

Off The Wall

FATHER’S DAY It’s never too late to reconcile

Pier Angelo

R

eligion, the root of all evil, was the biggest factor that prevented me from ever being close to my father. A deeply religious man, who truly lived according to Christian values, he had a tough time dealing with his first born, who, from an early age, proved to be rebellious, independent, stubborn, and gay. I never bought into the religious claptrap no matter how many hours I had to spend in Church, or taking part in family prayers. I had an adversarial relationship with religion, an inborn mistrust and dislike of the whole concept. I did not hesitate to express it loudly. Being punished for skipping Sunday services did nothing to deter me. In fact, it became very easy to “lose my religion,” to his life-long dismay. As time went by, our differences spilled into politics, social issues, lifestyles, education and career choices, never agreeing on anything and always carrying a tremendous amount of tension anytime we were in the presence of one another. Ironically he never found it difficult to get on well with strangers, with his nephew, or other people’s kids. During my childhood I feared and obeyed him. I was always reading his temperament, assessing his mood when he arrived home from work, constantly preparing myself for our daily battle around the dinner table. Much later I came to the realization I loved him, but sadly I never got to know him. Looking back I can now say it was a waste

of lives. Mine and his, plain misery for the sake of some ancient superstitious belief in an unknown god. I kept arguing with him that there was no convincing evidence our world was created by divine intervention, that a god intercedes in human affairs, or the complete absence of proof there is life after death for that matter. The more I went on the further apart we grew. I know he truly loved me and cared for me, but he had no idea how to reach out or bend his stern views of what I should be or do. And I never made an effort to extend an olive branch. I never compromised. According to my mother we were two faces of the same coin. My father was the strong and silent type — with an emphasis on the silent. That is, until his short fuse exploded in anger. Very much like some people describe aspects of my personality. He was a stranger for most of my life. I left home at a very early age to get away from him, to discover and explore the world on my own terms. To his credit he gave me the freedom I needed and craved. He probably realized the battle was lost and therefore did not oppose my living halfway across the globe. For my part I chose to live with “no regrets.” Again, to his credit, he never lost touch with me. For 30 years, not a week went by, without receiving from him a handwritten letter. It didn’t matter that most of the times

FOR 30 YEARS, NOT A WEEK WENT BY, WITHOUT RECEIVING FROM HIM A HANDWRITTEN LETTER.

I didn’t bother to reply. They kept coming. He never gave up on me. Many of us are able to forgive our parents for perceived childhood wrongs once we see them as normal human beings who did the best they could raising us. When my father started to age he began to soften and my defenses dropped because I feared him less. But it wasn’t until I saw him as an old man slowly preparing for his own death that I was able to summon the strength to go up to him and tell him that I loved him. It was the first time in my adult life I ever said that to him. The gratitude, surprise and happiness I saw in his eyes and face, after I uttered those three magic words, instantly healed all the wounds of the past, on both sides. It was a brief moment, on a train station

platform, but it reconciled a lifetime of turmoil, friction and pain. I think timing is everything when initiating a step toward reconciliation, and you don’t have to wait decades before doing it. I know that now. There might not be a tomorrow. My father passed away five years after our milestone moment. Knowing that I had already said the things that needed to be said, actually helped a great deal during the grieving process. Nothing was left unsaid, hence, leaving no room for regrets. Now when Father’s Day comes around, only good memories accompany the tears. I only wonder what our lives could have been if religion hadn’t kept us so far apart for so long.

CONVICTIONS

THE SUPREME COURT SIDES WITH OUR SIDE Quiet heroes shape our destiny

Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

T

his week, the gay community celebrated another remarkable victory in the Supreme Court of the United States. It has special meaning to me. When I came to Florida in 1976, a graduate of the Hofstra University School of Law in New York, homosexuality was still considered deviancy of the highest order. In fact, it was grounds for the Florida Bar to deny you the right to be an attorney, because homosexuals were deemed to lack “good moral character.” For me to become licensed as a lawyer, my first act would have to be to lie to the Bar about who I was. Fortunately, my career in Fort Lauderdale began in 1977 with a threeyear stint as Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. In 1979, one of the students in my class — still a friend today — came to me with a case that had a cause. I could relate to it. He could not get a job in the Defense Department because he was gay. Rick was an outstanding student and a cartographer who had quintessential academic qualifications. All the Army cared about though was the other, bigger ‘Q.’ He was ‘queer,’ he was gay, and he was gone. I was certain Rick’s firing was a transparent violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, discrimination based solely on sex. Unfortunately, it was also 1980, and not so clear to the courts of that era. It took forty years to prove my point. On Monday, afternoon, by a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court finally agreed with Rick and me. By asserting his rights in a world where they were not recognized, Rick risked everything. It took a lot of courage for him to speak out. We were helped by the best. Frank Kameny had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and completed

a doctorate in astronomy at Harvard before obtaining a job in 1957 for the Army Map Service. Only 32 years old, Kameny was confronted by his superiors about rumors and reports that he was a homosexual. He never denied that he was, and his admissions promptly cost him his job. Kameny, however, did not go quietly into the good night. Barred from staying in the public sector and fulfilling his life’s work, Kameny sued the government. His case went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he lost, in 1960. Sixty years later and nine years after his death, on Monday afternoon, Kameny won in the Supreme Court too, as did LGBT everywhere. Human rights are won when one stands up for all. The history of landmark cases in our Supreme Court has been quietly written by the unlikely heroes who dared to be defiant, and spoke up for their rights. They wound up empowering us all. “Give me a place to stand on, and a lever long enough,” spoke the Greek philosopher Archimedes, “and I will move the world.” A few years ago, Jim Obergefell said he wanted to marry his partner, John Arthur, in Cincinnati, Ohio, before he died of ALS. He did, and five years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States sanctified that bond. In 1961, a penniless Clarence Earl Gideon demanded an attorney in Panama City, Florida, after being charged with a felony. From that small courtroom, the highest court in the land would one day rule the Constitution requires states to provide defense attorneys to criminal defendants who cannot afford lawyers themselves. Ernesto Miranda was a high school dropout whose lawyers in Arizona argued

that he had to be read and understand his rights- before he was questioned by police. A plaintiff named Oliver Brown filed a class action suit against the Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas, after his daughter, Linda, was denied entrance to Topeka’s all-white elementary schools. So too did the courage of Gerald Bostock and Aimee Stephens move the High Court in Washington, D.C., this week. They are two very human stories of courage and resolve, worth noting. Their lives gave birth to this week’s rulings. Gerald Bostock began working for Clayton County, Georgia, as a child welfare services coordinator in 2003. During his ten-year career, he received a host of commendations. In 2013, Bostock joined a gay softball league, but that did not hit a home run for him at work or with his homophobic colleagues. His superiors fired him for it. No, it had nothing to do with his job performance, but all about who he was and how he wanted to live his life. Aimee Stephens worked in a Detroit funeral home, showing up every day in a suit and tie, dressed as the man she was not. One afternoon in 2013, she wrote a letter to her colleagues and friends stating that she would be going to work dressed as a woman the next morning. It took all the courage she could muster. In her letter, Aimee wrote she “could no

longer live dishonestly with the agony in her soul.” Those words cost her dearly. Within two weeks, she was fired. While Aimee just passed away last month, she passes on a legacy that will never be forgotten. All these individuals were unlikely heroes who became champions for equality. Faced with a moment, they dared to buck the odds and challenge the status quo. Someday, somehow, somewhere, ever so suddenly, you too may get that call. How will you respond? How have you? When you encounter wrong, right it. Where you see injustice, speak out about it. When you see corruption, don’t tolerate it. Another Greek philosopher, Pericles, said it best: “If Athens shall appear great to you, consider that her glories were won by good citizens doing their duty every day.” The Pandemic that is COVID-19 has given us all time to think about our lives and our destinies. We have cleaned out a lot of old baggage. We are charting the path we will take next. Give a damn. Make a difference. Light a torch. Take a risk. Be the rainbow after the storm. Look at what these people did. Like Robert Frost, they came upon a road, and took the one less travelled by. It has made the world a better place for all of us. You can do the same. You can be tomorrow’s hero.

THE RALLY FOR REMEDY AT HAGEN PARK IN WILTON MANORS Carina Mask

O

n June 14, a congregation of approximately 400 peaceful protestors gathered at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors in the blazing summer heat with handmade signs and began chanting spiritedly at 2 in the afternoon. After an alarming number of cases of police brutality and violence against black and dark skinned people, Rico Wilson’s response to violence was amalgamation of peace and understanding. Wilson is one of the founders of Rally for Remedy, a nonviolent demonstration created in order to secure a safe place to talk about solutions and to share stories. Wilson stated, “This was not to be presented as a march, a protest or a riot. It was a peaceful demonstration of what it could look like and feel like when we all come together and listen to each other. We made a statement and it planted a seed for change.” When Wilson was asked about the possibility of future marches or demonstrations, he remarked that, “I think the whole city of Wilton [Manors] was very pleased and engaged. They got to hear a few John O. Buckley.

stories from people they see all the time in the community and they probably never heard these stories before. We are still getting phone calls, it shows that Wilton Manors needed a peaceful protest to talk about solutions.” The air became electrified with such energy when Rebecca Vaughns took the stage and began to speak with such fervor and passion. She touched on Rayshard Brooks’ fatal shooting in Atlanta which occurred last Friday night, June 12 at a Wendy’s drive thru where a small altercation escalated quickly to Brook being tased and then shot by an Atlanta police officer. “We can’t stop fighting, the cycle continues. Just yesterday they burned down Wendy’s in Atlanta due to another unnecessary killing by a cop.” Her voice boomed, “Words are powerful, and what you think, Manifests,” Vaughns momentarily pauses and then continues, “So, the fact that we’ve been saying, No Justice, No Peace this entire time. With respect to No Justice, No Peace, this is why we’re getting No Justice and No Peace.” Vaughns took another dramatic pause then ended with, “We need to change the narrative, moment by moment, day by day, voice by voice, hashtag by hashtag and that should be: Give us Justice, Return our Peace!” The crowd roared. Bullhorns bellowed deeply and the voices of hundreds of people chanting the names of the folks lost to police brutality and violence was deafening on the Drive. John O. Buckley, Vice President and Program Director at Unity Coalition/Coalicion Unida was one of the speakers who took the stage. “Yesterday [June 14] was the first step towards change that needs to come about in Wilton Manors. I used my voice and will continue with positive actions towards that change, until that is the new normal.” During the peaceful march, the attendees

all kneeled for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in honor of the recently slain George Floyd. On May 25 this year, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd after a convenience store clerk called the police and told them that Floyd had purchased cigarettes with a counterfeit $20.00 bill. In less than 20 minutes, police officers arrived on scene and had pinned Floyd against the pavement. He was rendered unconscious by then police officer Chauvin, who refused to remove his knee from Floyd’s throat well past the arrival of emergency personnel. Wilton Manor’s Commission, Julie Carson was an attendee at the demonstration and marched north on Wilton Drive with hundreds of other demonstrators, she was

extremely touched by the entire event and display. When Carson was asked for a quote, she wrote, “Gathered in common cause and solemn resolve to eradicate racism and end police violence against black and brown people, the young organizers orchestrated a move ‘Rally for the Remedy’ in Wilton Manors. From the bullhorn accompanied by a march down the Drive to dropping a knee on the hot pavement, I am purposefully reminded of our collective humanity.” Wilson added, “We want to plan more peaceful protests but we wanted to see how the community would react to it. I love Wilton Manors and always want to see the city advance and lead in this universal movement for inclusiveness and diversity.”
