hile this past weekend was filled with fireworks and celebrations for the Fourth of July, for a local family, it was the one-year anniversary of their loved one’s murder. Bree “Nuk” Black, a trans woman, was shot and killed near her Pompano Beach home on July 3, 2020. Although throngs of people were in the area taking part in the Independence Day festivities, no one has come forward with any information leading to an arrest. “Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives continue to pursue leads and investigate the murder of Bree Black in hopes of finding the person or persons responsible for Bree’s death,” Carey Codd, senior public information officer for BSO, told SFGN in an email. “The case remains an open and active investigation, and homicide detectives urge anyone with information on this incident to please come forward and share what you know.” A month after her murder, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony announced that there was an $8,000 reward for information leading to an arrest—$3,000 from Broward Crime Stoppers and $5,000 from the Florida Sheriffs Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program. “We can’t lose focus on the fact that in the U.S., the transgender community is targeted and discriminated against and we would like to get to a conclusion to understand whether or not this was a matter of a hate crime,” Tony said in a press conference last year. Last year was the deadliest on record for the transgender community in the United States. According to the Human Rights

Campaign, at least 44 transgender or gender nonconforming people were murdered in 2020; a large portion of them were Black or Hispanic. This is almost double the number in 2019. Three of them were in Florida — Tony McDade was shot and killed by a police officer in Tallahassee in May 2020, Yunieski Carey Herrera was stabbed to death by her husband in Miami in the middle of Transgender Awareness Week in November 2020, and Black during the Fourth of July weekend. “Bree ‘Nuk’ Black was 27 years young. The average life expectancy of a Black trans
woman is 35 years of age,” said Nik Harris, the LGBTQ consumer advocate to Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried. Tatiana Williams, the co-founder and executive director of TransInclusive, has been in touch with Black’s family as well as law enforcement over the last year. She told SFGN that “unfortunately, the community is not stepping up.” Last year, Williams said that Black’s father has been “threatened due to this ongoing investigation” and that the family is trying to put the painful incident behind them.

Tommy, Angelica, Chuckie, and other fan favorites will return but so will Betty DeVille (mother of Phil and Lil) only this time she will be a lesbian. In the original series, Betty was married to Howard Deville but since then she has come out. Natalie Morales, the voice of the new Betty, told The A.V. TRANSGENDER TEEN’S ARTWORK SELLS FOR $2.26 MILLION
Victor Langlois aka FEWOCiOUS netted $2.16 million at an auction on Christie’s (a digital auction site). His project: “Hello, i’m Victor (FEWOCiOUS) and This Is My Life” included five sections of digital art that each represent a year of Langlois’ life between the ages of 14 and 18. It takes you through his journey of understanding his gender identity and transition process. He began drawing on his iPad because he wasn’t allowed to paint in his room. “I wasn’t allowed to paint in my room, so ninety percent of all my art online is digital. I made it on my iPad,” said Langlois in an interview with Decrypt. Since then, he has successfully established himself in the digital art community. On June 23rd, the day of the auction, the demand for his pieces was so high that Christie’s crashed. Langlois

PRO RUGBY PLAYER JACK DUNNE COMES OUT AS BISEXUAL
Professional Irish rugby player Jack Dunne came out as bisexual. The second row for Leinster Rugby made the announcement during an outreach panel called “Building Allies with Pride.” Dunne admitted to already being out among friends and teammates since his late teens but this is his first time speaking out publicly. “I kind of realized when I was maybe sixteen or so, maybe fifteen or sixteen, but you’re in a school full of teenage boys,” Dunne said on the LGBT Sport Podcast. He admits that he would have come out sooner but decided to stay in the closet due to the comments and attitudes he heard from his classmates. Dunne also spoke of the differences between being gay and bisexual. “When you’re bisexual, it’s almost like a blessing and a curse,” Dunne explained. “You can hide it easier, you can still go out with the lads on Saturday night and do all that stuff, but then at the same time it’s easier to hide it and easier not to be true

MISS NEVADA REPRESENTS TRANS COMMUNITY AT MISS USA 26-year-old Kataluna Enriquez was crowned Miss Nevada, beating 21 other contestants and becoming the first openly transgender woman to represent the state in the Miss USA pageant. Enriquez started competing in pageants in 2015, three years after trans women were officially allowed to compete for Miss Universe and its lower titles. Wearing a sequined, rainbowcolored dress she designed, Enriquez used her platform to advocate for trans rights. Enriquez told KSNB News, “I didn’t have the easiest journey in life. It was a struggle for a moment. I struggled with physical and sexual abuse. I struggled with mental health. I didn’t have much growing up. I didn’t have support. But I’m still able to thrive, and I’m still able

to survive and become a trailblazer for many.” If Enriquez wins the Miss USA title, she will be the second trans woman to compete for Miss Universe, behind Spain’s Angelica Ponce in 2018.
MINNESOTA TRANS STUDENT WINS 218K LAWSUIT AGAINST SCHOOL The Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District has been court-ordered to overhaul its policies regarding transgender student safety and pay 218,500 to Matt Woods, a transgender student who sued after experiencing transphobia at school. While at Buffalo Community Middle School, Woods was isolated from other students and forced to use a single-stall restroom that no other student was required to. He was removed from physical education classes and was eventually hospitalized for mental health treatment due to the discrimination he faced in class. Woods told Gender Justice, “I’m glad there will be new gender affirming policies put into place so that no one else has to go through what I went through, because people should be able to express their gender identity and go to the bathroom

IOWA SUPREME COURT OVERRULES JURY IN ANTI-GAY DISCRIMINATION CASE The Iowa Supreme Court overturned a lower court’s decision to award 1.5 million dollars to an ex-political appointee who says he was targeted and discriminated against by former Gov. Terry Branstad. In 2019, jurors found that when Branstad cut then-Iowa Workers’ Compensation Commissioner Chris Godfrey’s pay by $40,000, it was a retaliation for refusing to quit after the Governor was re-elected in 2010. Branstad denied knowing that Godfrey was the state’s first openly gay official when he asked him to resign. Godfrey’s attorney, Roxanne Conlin, told the Des Moines Register, “In every civil rights case, the perpetrator denies being motivated by discrimination — we know that’s going to happen; we expect
that to happen. We don’t expect the Supreme Court to rule it didn’t happen when the jury said that it did.” In addition to not having to award Godfrey $1.5 million in emotional distress, the court also ruled that the state no longer had to pay over $3 million in Godfrey’s legal fees over more than ten years of litigation. According to the Register, Justice Christopher McDonald, who wrote the majority opinion, said it wasn’t enough for Godfrey to claim Republicans in general harbored anti-gay bias at the time of the dispute in 2010 and 2011. The court held Godfrey did not present any evidence Branstad knew he was gay when the govenor attempted to oust him from office.
NEW JERSEY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT FOR HOMELESS LGBT YOUTH UNDERWAY Developers broke ground last week in Newark for a permanent housing development that seeks to provide shelter for 11 homeless LGBT individuals who may have a disability. The project is a partnership between the LGBT RAIN Foundation, which houses displaced LGBT youth, and Monarch Housing, a non-profit that specializes in housing marginalized communities. Gov. Phil Murphy told Roi-NJ, “In a stronger and fairer New Jersey, it is irrefutable that identifying LGBTQ residents of New Jersey have rights not only to free self-expression but, also, to a safe space to express those truths. Our LGBTQ youth face unprecedented struggles and are often subject to homelessness due

EAST AFRICA HOSPITALS OFFERING ANTI-GAY COUNSELING Hospitals and clinics across East Africa have given or supplied referrals for controversial “anti-gay” therapies to “alter” people’s sexuality. Being gay is “a trend” in Kenya, according to a counselor at an HIV clinic in Nairobi, stated OpenDemocracy, and some gay men are “lured” into homosexuality by others. She stated that it would take at least five counseling sessions to “alter” same-sex attraction. “Whoever wants to quit homosexuality, we connect them [to external counselors],’’ said a receptionist at an HIV clinic in Kampala, Uganda, to OpenDemocracy. Past counselors, she said, have included Solomon Male, a vocally anti-LGBT evangelical pastor. Survivors of these practices in East Africa experienced long-term

CANADA PUTS LGBT CONVERSION THERAPY BILL ON HOLD After an attempt to recall the Senate during the summer to deal with the bill failed late Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s vow to outlaw LGBT conversion therapy has been postponed until at least September. According to Reuters, a proposal by the government’s representative to have extra sessions over the summer to deal with unfinished business, such as the conversion treatment law, was blocked. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters on Wednesday that she was disappointed that the Senate failed to pass Bill C-6, which cleared the House of Commons 263 to 63 last week. “Disappointed is too weak a word,” Freeland said. “This is something that would really help Canadians and not doing it really hurts a lot of people.”

CSS’s contract with the city came up for renewal, the city declined to renew it, saying CSS was in violation of the city ordinance and the contract’s language. CSS sued, saying the city’s refusal to renew its contract violated its First Amendment Free Exercise right. Besides, said CSS, it never violated the law because no same-sex couples had ever come to CSS and, if they had, CSS would have gladly referred them to some other foster care agency. FINDING ESCAPE CLAUSES Writing for the court, Chief Justice John Roberts accepted CSS’s contention that, by certifying a family for potential foster care placements, it was making an “endorsement of their relationships.” “CSS does not object to certifying gay or lesbian individuals as single foster parents or to placing gay and lesbian children,” wrote Roberts, noting that no same-sex couple had ever gone to
CSS seeking to be certified. And he reiterated CSS’s contention that, if a same-sex couple had gone to CSS, the Catholic agency would have directed the couple to an agency that does certify same-sex couples. Jenny Pizer, senior counsel and director of law and policy for Lambda Legal, could not buy into that line of logic. “Think about this in another area of law, like health care,” Pizer said. “If a doctor announces prospectively that they intend to discriminate — that they will treat only people of this one race and not another race — that’s a discrimination problem. And maybe people hear that doctor’s message and don’t go to that doctor. But that doesn’t absolve that medical office. You wouldn’t have a decision saying that, ‘Lots of doctors in town are willing to treat Black people so Black people can just go somewhere elsewhere.’ There has never been that kind of understanding of how civil rights laws are supposed to operate.”

im Fahy was tragically killed before the parade at this year’s Stonewall Street Festival in Wilton Manors. A celebration of life was held June 30 at The United Church of Christ in Fort Lauderdale. It was total tribute to a man whom many respected, loved, and admired. James “Jim” Fahy, was a true man of the world. The Fahy family emigrated from Galway, Ireland in 1929. Fahy grew up in a Roman Catholic household and the family was tight knit. He is survived by his twin brother and younger sister. Fahy spent twenty years in East Africa mostly Kenya, as a missionary developing community based trade schools, and spent time in Nairobi, the capital of the country, in inner-city impoverished areas establishing schools for unemployed youth. ctivists in Spain and around the world have condemned the murder of a 24-year-old man that has been categorized as an anti-gay hate crime. Media reports indicate Samuel Luiz Muñiz, 24, was beaten to death early on July 3 after he and a group of friends left a nightclub in A
Coruña, a city in northwestern Spain’s Galicia region. The Associated Press cites Spanish media that say witnesses told police the group of people who attacked Luiz used anti-gay slurs against him. Authorities have reportedly detained two men and a woman in connection with Ruiz’s murder. Fundación Triángulo, a Spanish LGBTQ rights group, organized a series of protests that took place in Madrid and in other cities throughout the country on Monday. “We woke up on Saturday to the terrible news of the murder of Samuel, a young 24-year-old man from A Coruña, at the hands of a group of people who took his life by beating him while screaming ‘faggot’,” said Fundación Triángulo in a statement. “Terror, anguish, fear. This is what Samuel was able to feel before his death.” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday described Luiz’s murder as a “savage and depraved act.” The hashtag #JusticiaParaSamuel or #JusticeForSamuel has been trending on social media in Spain and around the world. “Solidarity with Spain from Puerto Rico,” tweeted Pedro Julio Serrano, founder of Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, a Puerto Rican LGBTQ rights group, on Tuesday. “We join the global call (for) justice for Samuel.”

arrived at our staff meeting like any other staff meeting. It was a little loud, and hyper masculine, like you might expect in a weight room environment. “Typical personal training staff meeting,” I told myself. I haven’t been a part of every gym, but toxic masculinity seems to be part of the ones I have been involved in. This meeting however, I was thrown off because in front of each seat was a bag with a name on it and inside the bags were clothes. Uniforms. “No shit,” I said to myself. I became a personal trainer so that I could feel free to express myself and for those who know me I like to dance around the gym while lifting and I shop in the women’s section of most athletic stores for my workout clothes. I pulled out my shorts and I was shocked. My heart was literally pulled out of my chest and it began to pound on the floor. There was no way I could wear these shorts and feel like myself. I was thinking about quitting. Everyone had minor fitting problems with the clothes, which is normal. But no one had identity problems with the clothes — at least insofar as it was expressed… except for me. Now if there is one thing that I know I must do in this world in order to maintain my sobriety from heroin, it’s to be open and to be honest and to stand up for myself. So, I did. Even though I believed deep in my heart that I would be fired. But to be fired was honestly better than leaving behind my queer identity and donning shorts that swung loose and hung down to my knees. “I can’t wear these; I need the women’s clothes.” I spoke up and continued, “There is no way I can wear these and feel like myself and the reason people hire me as a personal trainer is because I’m me and express it in my character and attire.” My face grew hot after I said this because I’m only just getting used to standing up for myself and I thought I’d be fired. I was very surprised at what happened next. The meeting went on and I felt I wasn’t heard. Then the meeting ended, and I still felt like I wasn’t heard. Then I went home and contemplated never coming back to the gym. I tried on the clothes and threw them on the floor. I wanted to cry. Why did they want me

to be dressed like a gym boy when I’m not, I’m me? I’m a person, I’m they, I’m them, not always a he! The next day I decided to show up for work in my non-uniform clothes and the reaction I got was something worth sharing. My boss came up to me and did not scorn me. Rather he said, “I’m sorry the clothes did not fit you.” Now the significance in this was tremendous. “I’m sorry the clothes did not fit you.” He didn’t say, “I’m sorry YOU didn’t like the clothes, but you have to wear
them.” In saying, “I’m sorry the clothes didn’t fit you” he took my fault out of the equation. It was the manufacture of the clothes fault and now since he approached it this way, there was a solution within reach. As sexual identity becomes more prevalent in the workplace this type of interaction is becoming more common. It’s imperative that we approach people with empathy, and we don’t make it their fault when they don’t fit into our box. I urge you to go forth and use this in your everyday life so each individual is empowered to express their real and true and authentic self.

TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE Instead of asking ‘What’s wrong with you?’ it’s time to start asking ‘What’s happened to you?’ Atticus Ranck
Y
ou may have heard the term “Trauma-Informed Care” lately. It’s not something I had heard until a few years ago. The general concept of TraumaInformed Care (TIC) is about changing our attitude towards people from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What’s happened to you?” I’m not an expert in TIC, but I work within the realm and understand the basic concepts and can apply them to my work. If you work in any sort of service industry like retail or restaurant work, or social services such as a social worker or in case management or as a therapist, or if you happen to interact with people on any sort of regular basis, then you know that people can be hard to work with. People can be angry, resentful, hostile, and stubborn. You know the kind of person I’m talking about — people who don’t want to change even when the change will make their life better. And I get that — change is hard. From my experience, sometimes those individuals who are the most aggressive, the most difficult to work with, have had a lot of traumas in their life. Trauma looks different to different people, but trauma can be defined as any disturbing experience. It could be feeling unwanted as a child, experiencing sexual assault, losing a job, losing a loved one, navigating the healthcare system in the face of discrimination, and many other circumstances. Often, trauma is beyond our control. It’s something that’s happened to us without our consent. I’m talking about trauma in Trans Talk because almost every trans person has trauma related to their identity. I experienced trauma when I first came out to my family as a lesbian because I actually didn’t get to come out — I was outed. That was a traumatic experience for me. I’ve also experienced trauma when I was sexually violated. And I experienced trauma while learning to navigate the world as a man — entering public restrooms, going through the court system to change my name and gender, telling my friends and family who I really was, getting a job as my authentic self — all these things can be traumatic. When people have traumatic experiences, especially

more than one or even ongoing trauma, it can be really difficult to navigate in the world and to see people who may be trying to help you as helpful. It’s easier to put up a wall and not let people in, rather than do the harder thing and be vulnerable and choose to trust people to do the right thing. Putting up that wall is a means of defense: it’s a person’s way of saying, “I’ve been hurt before and I’m not going to let it happen again.” It can look like anger, stubbornness, or hostility. When interacting with people who have experienced trauma, there are five guiding principles we can use. These five principles are safety (ensuring physical and emotional safety), choice (the individual has choice and control), collaboration (making decisions with the individual and sharing power), trustworthiness (task clarity, consistency, and interpersonal boundaries), and
empowerment (prioritizing empowerment and skill building). I can’t teach you everything about TIC in this short article, but you can learn more from The Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care (ITTIC) at the University of Buffalo. Trans people have trauma. I can almost guarantee that most every person who does not identify as cisgender has had some sort of trauma related to their identity. In a world that is constantly trying to erase our freedom through anti-trans sports bills, and deny us our basic identity and rights through anti-trans bathroom bills, it’s hard to imagine any trans person who hasn’t found life difficult at times. So next time you find us “difficult,” maybe wonder “What’s happened to you?” rather than “What’s wrong with you?” and then prevent retraumatizing that person, as well as helping to stop trauma in the first place.
Atticus Ranck (he/him/his pronouns) works in the Education and Training Program of the AIDS Institute for the New York State Department of Health. Atticus identifies as a trans man and he is married to a trans woman. Together, they are raising two puppies and a cat and happily live in rural upstate NY. Previously, he was the Director of Transgender Services at SunServe in Wilton Manors.

It’s no coincidence that American companies led the charge to develop Covid-19 vaccines. Numerous policies — from strong patent protections to a welcoming immigration system — help ensure that the world’s smartest scientists can pursue cuttingedge research here. Many Americans, especially those with HIV, are alive today thanks to this innovation. Unfortunately, these same Americans have the most to lose if a well-intentioned but misguided drug-pricing bill becomes law. The proposal — the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, or H.R. 3 — would set drug prices, pegging Medicare payments to the average price in six other developed countries. In these “reference” countries, though, government officials make coverage and payment decisions based on heartless and antiquated cost-benefit analyses, called “quality-adjusted life-years.” These “QALYs” are inherently discriminatory, especially against those living with disabilities or chronic diseases, as they put a dollar figure on “perfect” health. So even when a treatment works exactly as it’s supposed to — and brings a patient back to his or her full life — those with underlying health conditions, like HIV, are deemed to never be “worth” as much to government regulators. Let’s be clear. Such analyses are cruel. And by importing other nations’ drug prices, we’d be importing such analyses here. In many of the reference nations, government regulators declare hard cut-offs on what they’ll spend — and therefore conclude that many patients are essentially “too expensive” to be worthy of care. This refusal to cover medicines that exceed an arbitrary threshold explains why the average patient in OECD countries had access to only 51 percent of new cancer medications launched worldwide from 2011-2019, while American patients had access to 96 percent. Currently, QALYs aren’t used to determine
Photo via Adobe.
the cost of drugs in the United States. But under H.R. 3, vulnerable patients would be subjected to discriminatory QALY assessments, just indirectly. The bill is also concerning because it would discourage research. Developing new medicines is risky. Fewer than 12 percent of experimental medicines entering clinical trials are eventually approved by the FDA. Drugs that make it to market have to subsidize all these failures. That’s why, on average, it costs $2.6 billion to bring a new medicine to market, according to a Tufts University study. By tying Medicare’s payments to the arbitrarily low prices paid abroad, H.R. 3 would reduce monies available for research and development. One analysis found that H.R. 3 could result in at least 56 fewer new medicines over 10 years. As a person living with HIV, I’ve seen the power of medical innovation firsthand. In 10 years, I’ve gone from taking three pills per day to only one. At the height of the HIV/AIDs epidemic, the disease was a death sentence. But today, thanks to the innovation of the pharmaceutical industry and the incredible antiretroviral treatments it developed, those living and loving with HIV have life expectancies that match those without it. Encouraging innovation is the best way to help vulnerable patients like me. Unfortunately, H.R. 3 puts patients last.

We had friends visiting Delray from up north, so we used that as an opportunity to haul our keisters out of the house and check out the recently opened Delray Beach Market, one of the new upscale food courts in the area. Parking is plentiful and fairly cheap, with validation (even cheaper if you park on the next block south where it’s free!). The cavernous building does its best to appear less imposing and cozier, all while housing a couple of dozen food outlets. If you want to be out of the fray, take your trays of food to the mezzanine level dining room, but even on the main floor, we were able to find a table, albeit with a few screaming toddlers nearby (the parents laughed each time the kid screeched like a banshee. Glad they thought it was cute.) We managed to ignore (and outstay them) and hung out chatting for a couple of hours. I’ve been trying to do keto and thought I’d have a hard time sticking to my plan but found many options. Cellar & Pantry offered a cheese and charcuterie platter, Ferdos’ Grill had kabobs and salads, Incredibowl offered salads, and build your own bowls with the option of cauliflower rice in place of a starch and Surry Company Smoke House offered some delicious looking smoked meats. Surry had so many choices that I couldn’t decide, and since they didn’t
have a sampler platter I moved on to another vendor. I ended up going with Tiffin Box, which takes the Chipotle concept to Indian fare. I opted for cauliflower “rice” topped with shredded lamb and sauteed vegetables. My only complaint is that it didn’t taste like Indian food at all. There were no spices, no heat. I could just have easily been dining on the equally bland Chipotle! Everyone else in our group opted for plates from Tanuki, which offers poke and Chinese steamed buns (baos) filled with chicken or roast pork. The cuts on the fish in the poke bowls of all the diners could have been a bit more precise, but it was fresh and otherwise tasty. We were going to grab a bloody Mary from Central Bar, but the only option was a 32 oz. mug, which seemed a bit excessive. After lunch, they all visited Bona Bona, a joyful creation of chef Nick Di Bona, featuring small batches of a hybrid of Italian gelato and American-style ice cream. The menu features cups, cones, sundaes, and shakes, topped with a torched swirl of its signature meringue. I snuck one taste of my hubby’s vanilla ice cream studded with pieces of animal crackers- delish. THE CAVERNOUS BUILDING DOES ITS BEST TO APPEAR LESS IMPOSING AND COZIER, ALL WHILE HOUSING A COUPLE OF DOZEN FOOD OUTLETS.

MIAMI CINEMA SHOWCASES FRENCH ART FILMS Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Ave. in Coral Gables, was among 12 arthouse theaters recently awarded grants from UniFrance, the French international film promotion agency. The grant was established to enable U.S. independent cinemas and distributors affected by the pandemic to showcase French films. With the support of the UniFrance grant, the theater will offer two new releases: François Ozon’s “Summer of ‘85,” a sexy, nostalgic reverie of first love and its consequences, will open July 16. The bittersweet teen romance was adapted by Ozon from Aidan Chambers’ groundbreaking LGBT young adult novel “Dance on My Grave” and has been a fan favorite at queer film festivals. “Slalom” will open July 30. The riveting #MeToo drama by debut filmmaker Charlène Favier explores the relationship between Lyz, a teenage ski prodigy, and her predatory instructor, played by Jérémie Renier. In a breakthrough role, Noée Abita stars as the 15-year-old student who has been accepted to an elite ski club and quickly realizes she will have to endure more than the physical and emotional pressure of her training. RESILIENT CHORUS WILL SING AGAIN AFTER TRAGEDY J.W. Arnold
T
he Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) had just resumed rehearsals in June before a freak accident left the 35-year-old ensemble’s future in question. On Saturday, June 19 as the chorus stepped off for the annual Stonewall Pride parade in Wilton Manors, a member driving an accompanying vehicle got his foot caught between the accelerator and brake pedals. The truck plowed through the assembled crowd at high speed and a chorus member, James Fahy, 75, was killed. Even after the tragedy was revealed to be an accident, members of the chorus and the community were still reeling in shock. “Every day is getting better,” said FTLGMC founder and artistic director Dr. Gary Keating, who added that the outpouring of support from other LGBT choruses both locally and from around the globe have helped to ease the pain. Michael Tate, board chair of GALA Choruses, an international organization, took to Facebook: “Our hearts are broken at the loss of life experienced by the Fort Lauderdale chorus family, especially on such a joyous Pride Saturday. On behalf of the GALA Choruses board and staff, I want to offer my deepest condolences to the entire FTLGMC family. We reside in support, love, and community with you during this unbelievably difficult time.” Members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and Miami Gay Men’s Chorus also bolstered FTLGMC’s numbers at the celebration of life service for Fahy held on Wednesday, June 30, singing Greg Gilpin’s “Why We Sing,” a selection from a larger work performed by the groups for the 50th

anniversary of Stonewall in 2019. “Years ago, when I started the chorus, in the first three years we lost 31 members of the chorus to HIV and AIDS,” Keating recalled. “We didn’t have another chorus to lean on and we had to hold it together, so it was really nice for my guys to have those men to lean on.” The FTLGMC’s history has made it resilient, Keating pointed out, and the members intend to sing on – stronger than ever. “Never, not once, not once,” did the chorus consider folding in the weeks since the accident, Keating said. “The minute I had to sit down and think about this and the incredible amount of support that came pouring in, they told me to come back to the music. We will heal.” This week, FTLGMC once again resumed rehearsals and plans to perform a previously scheduled concert on September 18. The concert will be dedicated to Fahy and Keating promised a program that would be “uplifting… but I had planned that anyways,” hoping to signal to pandemic-weary audiences that arts would rebound. Keating will premiere new a cappella arrangements of “Wind Beneath My Wings” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” as well as bring back a chorus favorite, selections from the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots.” “We have a reason to come back together,” Keating said. Days after the accident, Chorus member Tom Cusack summed up the feelings of many in the chorus, “We want to come back and sing to show we can overcome anything and honor Jim by singing again. He will always be in our memory. We can’t stop.”
The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus will present its fall concert on Saturday, September 18 at a venue to be announced. For tickets and more information, go to FTLGMC.org. 7. 8 . 20 21 •
