since January 2019. “Deputy Bennett was a treasured member of the LGBTQ community and dedicated his career to ensuring the most vulnerable individuals in our society could find safety and support,” reads a statement from Equality Florida, the largest statewide LGBT rights organization. “The offensive comments attributed to Chief Engle robbed Deputy Bennett, and all LGBTQ people, of the dignity and respect they deserve.” According to reporting from the Sun Sentinel, the Broward County Medical Examiner said Bennett’s underlying health condition was asthma. In April, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony told NBC 6 if the comments were true, they would be considered offensive and homophobic.
“It would be lack of decency and character to make such a suggestion because there’s no accurate information out there that would support such a notion,” Tony said. “And it would only be something done under a derogatory aspect, which would be offensive to me and this agency.” In April a Change.org petition was launched urging the town to fire Engle. To date more than 32,000 people have signed it. “Equality Florida calls on the Town of Davie to terminate Chief Engle’s employment if these reports are substantiated. As a leader of Davie’s law enforcement agency, he has failed to demonstrate the respect and leadership skills needed to protect all individuals who reside or visit Davie,” the statement continues.

To all, After nearly 22 years of dedicated and loyal service with Davie Police Department and the Town of Davie, my final day will be September 3rd, 2020. I will cherish the past two plus decades of life and work experiences that have helped define my character, life purpose and ultimately developed me into who I am today. I have been fortunate to have been a member of one of the noblest of professions and have nothing but respect for the pride and professionalism that everyone within the Town of Davie demonstrates every day. To those I leave behind, I personally want to wish you all the very best that life has to offer and look forward to maintaining the many valued relationships that I have gained over the years. Thank you for everything.

As our organization grew and evolved, we knew our logo had to as well,” said Alfredo Olvera, president of the Dolphins. “We added the black and brown stripes to represent the intersections in our Black and Brown communities. We also added a blue & pink triangle to represent the transgender community. Visibility and inclusivity go hand in hand with the values of the Democratic Party. It was time for a change, and our Board made it happen.” Olvera said the logo was created by Landon St. Gordon at MDW Communications and donated by its president Michael Worley.

he family of Shannon Bennett, a gay Broward Sheriff’s deputy who died from COVID-19, was recently dealt another blow when insurance giant AIG denied their claim for an accidental death in the line of duty. “Essentially, while my family is grappling with trying to get our bearings back, this type of letter comes in and of course it floors us,” Darren Bennett, Shannon’s brother told Local 10. In an email to SFGN, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said they continue to advocate for Bennett and noted that his family has received other benefits they were entitled to. “Deputy Bennett’s death was also covered under a death benefit payout that was provided within our group health insurance contract as well as a benefit for life insurance offered through the Broward Sheriff’s Office,” Tony said. “Since the separate line of duty payout was denied by AIG, BSO has been working diligently to ensure Deputy Shannon Bennett’s family receives all benefits they are entitled to. Once we have this issue resolved, those details will be released.” Bennett had been a school resource officer at Deerfield Beach Elementary School since January 2019. He died April 3 and was 39. Bennett, a gay man, was to wed his partner in December. Immediately after Bennett died the Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council stepped in to raise funds for Bennett’s family. They launched the

“COVID-19 Fund” in memory of Bennett, to support the families of Broward County first responders, who die from the coronavirus. The BSAC is a nonprofit membership organization that raises funds to support first responders, and has been giving money to families of fallen officers, who have died in the line of duty, since 1985. As long as their agency says they died in the line of duty the families of first responders are eligible for the “COVID-19 Fund.” BSAC Executive Director Nancy Vaniman said they’ve raised $14,725 through the fund and has “supported three different families for substantially more than was raised.” “Funds were issued to the family within two days of his death and other funds have been set aside to pay for the memorial service that the family said they would like to have after social distancing measures have relaxed,” Vaniman said. AIG declined to comment to Local 10. Tony told Local 10: “One of the most difficult tragedies to endure in this profession is a line of duty death. We are committed to helping the Bennett family. We pay thousands of dollars each year for this insurance, and I’m extremely disappointed that AIG is denying this claim. We will exhaust all appeals. I have directed my command staff to review our contract with AIG. We hope as we have further dialogue with AIG, they recognize the global impact in [the] message that they are sending to our first responders.”

Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Tom Green will become “Acting Mayor” later this month when he is officially named by resolution to the post. The city has been without a mayor since Justin Flippen died suddenly of a brain aneurysm Feb. 25. His colleagues on the City Commission agreed by consensus July 14 that Green should have the title to eliminate some of the confusion Green has encountered because he still goes by the title “Vice Mayor.” “It’s very nice. There won’t be any difference in what I have been doing. There has been a lot of confusion on what my title is,” Green said. Employees at Wilton Manors City Hall refer to Green as “Vice Mayor.” The mayors who attend Broward County’s weekly mayor calls to discuss COVID-19 updates refer to him as “Mayor,” even though he’s not; and the National League of Cities has been
calling Green “Acting Mayor” since Flippen’s death. The mayor’s slot has been empty since Flippen died. The Supervisor of Elections told the city in March a special election couldn’t be held until the Aug. 18 primary. “We only have four commission meetings between that time and the November election, it didn’t make sense,” Commissioner Paul Rolli previously said. Because of ambiguity in the language of the City Charter, City Attorney Kerry Ezrol told commissioners they could use their own discretion as to whether or not to fill the slot. They left it vacant, to be filled during the November election. “[Green] really felt this would allow his work to be a little easier,” said Commissioner Julie Carson. “He said it has become very difficult to be the vice mayor at the meetings of the mayors.” WMG

Victory Fund Endorses Carson’s Campaign For Wilton Manors Mayor By John McDonald In a new round of endorsements, the LGBTQ Victory Fund announced its support of Julie Carson’s bid to become Mayor of Wilton Manors. A triathlete, foster mother and sitting Commissioner, Carson is seeking to fill the vacant mayorship left by the sudden death of Justin Flippen in February. Carson told SFGN she feels her campaign is in good shape. “I’m out on the streets, doing social distancing but making sure I’m present and accountable,” Carson said. “I hope for the opportunity to continue in service and also push forward some of Justin’s legacies.” The mayoral election is November 3. Elsewhere, Florida House candidates Javier Estevez (District 105) and Ricky Junquera (District 118) were upgraded to spotlight endorsements. “Both candidates are critical to ending the anti-LGBTQ majority in the Florida state

173 New Cases of COVID-19 in Oakland Park Last Week; Total Stands at 694 By Jason Parsley
The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 now stands at 694 in Oakland Park with 173 new cases this past week. “The City of Oakland Park continues to experience an unacceptable rise in COVID-19 cases,” said Tim Lonergan, Oakland Park City Commissioner. As of Tuesday, according to the Florida Department of Health, the total number of cases in Oakland Park now stands at 694, up from 521 a week ago — a 33% increase. The week before the number increased 52%. “It has been reported that approximately 80% of new cases are family or household related,” Lonegran said. “Kids and young adults are socializing with their friends and bringing the virus home and infecting other members of the household.” In the last two weeks the number of cases has doubled in the city and over the past 30 days it’s more than quadrupled. At the end of May new weekly cases in Oakland Park had slowed to a trickle. The total cases in Oakland Park come to about 1.5% of the population. Next door in Wilton Manors it’s about 1.6%. For comparison the percentage of positive tests in Florida amounts to 1.7% of the population. The Mayor of Oakland Park, Matthew Sparks notes that the positivity rate has also been increasing since early June – from 2% on June 2 to 22% on July 22. “So clearly we have a problem,” Sparks said. Sparks also noted that the the contact tracing data shows people are contracting the virus at a rate of 60% from someone in the household, 20% at work, 16% unknown, 2%
from trave, and 2% from July parties. “Clearly the virus is being brought into the home from outside sources and It can only tell me that people are not masking up, people are not following safety protocols,” he said. “So we’d like to drive home the three C’s which are closed spaces, crowded places and close contact settings. Sparks reiterates everyone needs to mask up in order to get the virus under control. “It is the safety precautions that are going to bring these his numbers down. So again we are asking the public to please be responsible and take every precaution to protect yourself and to protect others,” he said. “Clearly, since we are all being affected by the actions of others we must take responsibility for ourselves.” As Broward County and the rest of the state has reopened, Florida has set multiple records for the number of daily coronavirus cases in the last 30 days. South Florida has paused much of its reopening plans while Broward County has implemented a nightly curfew and new restrictions have been placed on certain businesses. “Our city continues its outreach efforts to urge residents and businesses to comply with the Broward County Executive Orders and always adhere to the CDC guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” Oakland Park Public Information Officer David Rafter previously told SFGN. “We realize everyone is stressed, but we must all remain vigilant
THE MAYOR OF OAKLAND PARK, MATTHEW SPARKS NOTES THAT THE POSITIVITY RATE HAS ALSO BEEN INCREASING SINCE EARLY JUNE – FROM 2% ON JUNE 2 TO 22% ON JULY 22.

when it comes to wearing our face masks and practicing social distancing.” According to FDOH as of Tuesday, 42,577 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Broward County — almost four times the number from 30 days ago. In Fort Lauderdale there have been 9,739 up from 2,397, 30 days ago. Next door in Wilton Manors the number is up to 206. There are 369,834 confirmed cases in Florida, more than 4 million in the U.S., and globally more than 15 million. So far there have been 5,207 deaths in Florida, 144,000 in the U.S. and globally more than 616,000. Almost 800 Floridians have died in the last week. “The State of Florida has reported 136 deaths in the past 24-hour period. The Governor continues to deny the need to implement a consistent statewide plan that would help to get the pandemic under control sooner. Counties and municipalities adhere to different guidelines creating confusion
and misinformation,” Lonegran said. “There are also concerns about a lack of COVID-19 educational materials in languages other than English. Hospital Intensive Care Units are hitting capacity and test results are taking longer than expected which is making contact tracing difficult. It’s time for the Governor to get serious and implement statewide guidelines and lead responsibly.” For more local information Lonergan pointed to the Oakland Park Coronavirus Call Center Hotline the city set up at the beginning of the pandemic. It’s available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “to answer questions and redirect residents to the resources they may find helpful.” He also directed residents to this webpage on the city’s website for “a wealth of knowledge, resources and links related to the pandemic.” Last month the City launched a campaign to encourage residents to shop local with the “Find it in Oakland Park” campaign. 19 New Cases of COVID-19 in Wilton Manors Last Week; Total Stands at 206 By Jason Parsley The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 now stands at 206 in Wilton Manors with 173 new cases this past week. “Unfortunately, this situation is going to get worse before it gets better,” Paul Rolli, Wilton Manors City Commissioner previously told SFGN. “Everyone has the responsibility to keep themselves protected for their own benefit and that of others.” As of Tuesday, according to the Florida Department of Health, the total number of cases in Wilton Manors now stands at 206, up from 187 a week ago — a 10% increase. That increase is moderate compared to Oakland Park, which experienced a 33% increase in the last week. “I urge everyone to stay home to the greatest extent possible,” Rolli previously said. “If you must go out, keep your mask on, wash your hands frequently and practice social distancing.” Over the past 30 days there’s been a 60% rise in confirmed cases in Wilton Manors. But those numbers pale in comparison to Oakland Park whose numbers have almost quadrupled in that same time period. At the end of May new weekly cases in Wilton Manors had dropped to just 1. In May there were 30 new cases. In June, 22. Meanwhile in this month, there have already been 66 new cases. The total cases in Wilton Manors comes to about 1.6% of the population. In Oakland Park it’s about 1.5%. For comparison the percentage of positive tests in Florida amounts to 1.7% of the population. As Broward County and the rest of the state has reopened, Florida has set multiple records for the number of daily coronavirus cases in the last 30 days. South Florida has paused
much of its reopening plans while Broward County has implemented a nightly curfew and new restrictions have been placed on certain businesses. “The City of Wilton Manors continues to ‘think outside the box’ to see how we can deliver services and provide relief to our stakeholders. We have assisted Restaurant Owners by providing outdoor dining spaces for patrons. Several bar owners have applied for and been granted state restaurant licenses. Although some may disagree with this strategy, for a few business owners this may be the only action that can slow the bleed of this emergency,” said Wilton Manors City Commissioner Julie Carson. “The City’s Code Enforcement Department is responding to numerous violations of the County’s most recent Emergency Order. Code Officers are working additional hours to educate, assist and compel compliance. Violations of safety protocols in Broward County can be reported by dialing 311.” According to FDOH as of Tuesday, 42,577 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Broward County — almost four times the number from 30 days ago. In Fort Lauderdale there have been 9,739 up from 2,397, 30 days ago. Next door in Oakland Park the number is up to 694. There are 369,834 confirmed cases in Florida, more than 4 million in the U.S., and globally more than 15 million. So far there have been 5,207 deaths in Florida, 144,000 in the U.S. and globally more than 616,000. Almost 800 Floridians have died in the last week. “In all events, acting responsibly by wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands often are the only solutions to mitigating this pandemic,” Carson said. LESBIAN MAYOR OF CHICAGO CALLS WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY A ‘KAREN’ Kim Swan
W
hen the White House Press Secretary referred to Lori Lightfoot as the “derelict mayor of Chicago,” she brushed it off with a quip “Hey, Karen. Watch your mouth.”
This was the second time she defended herself against “haters.” The first time was during her campaign for mayor when homophobic campaign flyers surfaced in Chicago that targeted her in 2019, according to the Chicago Tribune. Lightfoot during a City Hall news conference said, “hate has no place in Chicago.” “Hey, Karen. Watch your mouth” was in a response to a tweet quoting McEnany during a briefing earlier Thursday when McEnany attacked Lightfoot’s job performance as mayor. “Karen” is used as a mocking term describing a middle-aged White woman as
rude, obnoxious, and insufferable, according to the urban dictionary. During the briefing on Thursday, McEnany was asked about a quote by President Trump during his interview with CBS News in which he said, “More white people are killed,” as an answer to why Black people are still being killed by police officers. McEnany explained that Trump was referring to a fact that when you look at unarmed killings with police officers in the U.S., that you had nine unarmed Black individuals who were fatally shot and 19 unarmed White individuals. She said that’s down from 38 and 32 in 2015. She also listed the names of kids who have died across the U.S. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Photo via Facebook.
“It is unacceptable, and under this there are other things the President has President, he’ll take action,” she said. “And to focus on: namely, Democrat cities not the derelict mayor of Chicago should step up controlling their streets … [like] the mayor and ask for federal help because she’s doing of Chicago — people [are] dying ... on the a very poor job at securing her streets.” streets of her city every weekend. T
he South Florida Gay News joins the world in praising the life and mourning the passing of Congressman John Lewis, a national treasure and civil rights icon. Through years of nonviolent sacrifice and struggle, he maintained a song in his heart and a smile on his lips, fighting for justice and freedom for all, openly embracing the gay community. The story of John Lewis is the shared story of every man and woman who has ever bucked the tides of fortune to seek a newer world. We are left with the passion of his words and the indomitable force of his spirit. May his life be a blessing to all. Norm Kent Publisher
Here were his words just a few weeks ago... REP. JOHN LEWIS RESPONDS TO SUPREME COURT DECISION ON GAY AND TRANSGENDER CIVIL RIGHTS Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in a 6-3 decision that firing an individual for being gay or transgender is a violation of title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia decision addressed three cases where an employer filed a longtime employee based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. In the aftermath of the Children’s Crusade, the March on Washington, the "ALTHOUGH 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing, I AM the assassination ENCOURAGED of President John F. Kennedy, Jr., and BY THIS protests, Congress OPINION, WE adopted and ALL KNOW THAT President Lyndon B. Johnson signed MUCH WORK the Civil Rights REMAINS." Act of 1964 to - Rep. John Lewis reaffirm, clarify, and strengthen the equal
protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Title VII of the law forbids discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in employment. In reviewing the merits of the arguments to terminate these employees, the Supreme Court noted that, “Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids.” UPON REVIEWING THE DECISION, CONGRESSMAN LEWIS MADE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: “Today’s Supreme Court Decision restores my hope in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s conviction that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. “Although I am encouraged by this opinion, we all know that much work remains. It is impossible to ignore that deeply rooted structural inequality, xenophobia, and bias continues to permeate our nation, and LGBTQIA+
people of color — especially transgender women — experience violence, discrimination, and socio-economic disparities at alarming rates. As Bayard Rustin, the engineer of the March on Washington reminded us, ‘We are all one, and if we don’t know, we will learn it the hard way.’ “The work that remains is on display throughout Metro Atlanta and in every community across our country, and we must be clear-eyed, organized, and focused because the opposition is resolute and determined. Every day, news of human and civil rights abuses threaten the very fabric of our nation — some make national headlines, while others are executed from the shadows. For example, just last Friday in defiance to overwhelming
public consensus, the Administration issued a license to hate and discriminate when it approved a rule that overturned key protections in health programs that prevented discrimination for marginalized populations, including LGBTQIA+ people, women, individuals with disabilities, and non-proficient English speakers. “Today, we applaud the Supreme Court’s reaffirmation of what we know to be right and just as we strive towards a more perfect and equal union for all — not just a select few. The hard reality is that each and every one of us must dig deep and rededicate ourselves to the work ahead. No stone should be left unturned, and no one should be left behind as we seek to redeem and reclaim the soul of our nation.”

results. Be scared. Of course, Trump will first go to the courts, the very courts where he has appointed 200 federal judges. You have legitimate cause to be fearful that the democracy you grew up is in jeopardy right now. These judges were not appointed for their talent or temperament, but rather their fidelity to the man who would be Führer. Between now and then, Donald Trump will sow chaos and discord, attempting to induce riots and revolution. He will do so because the more division he fosters, the better chance he can justify force in the defense of his presidency. Last week, as the Portland demonstrators petered down to a few dozen persons who were barely influencing the streets, Trump allowed storm troopers to accost, assault and drag away non-violent protestors. Billy Joel did not start the fire. Trump did. He incited and inflamed the entire community. He took a crowd of 100 and turned it into a thousand. Federal buildings in Portland have been defaced with graffiti to be sure, but you can put a new face on a building. You can’t cover up for law enforcement officers who deface a democracy. Let’s not forget why people were in the streets in the first place. The insurgence in our cities began when four cops murdered
a black man. You can’t bring back George Floyd, but we can stand up for him. The President green-lighted an anonymous band of heavily armed homeland security agents to use brute force while attempting to carry out illegal arrests. Not a single video reveals protestors being caught in the act of defacing a structure homeland security was purportedly there to defend. Every shot instead reveals unidentified enforcers aggressively going into the streets and removing unthreatening, unarmed citizens without cause, from taking down bicyclists to beating up veterans. This is Trump’s America. As Jefferson Douglass once wrote, “power concedes nothing without a demand.” So, demand we must. Don’t worry about the beaches being closed this summer. America is calling us to the streets instead. Donald Trump is not interested in curing a pandemic. He wants to create pandemonium. There are two viruses America must fight this fall. One, scientists can find a vaccine for. The other one, the virus Donald — getting rid of that, is up to us, on Nov. 3. The man who was going to drain the swamp has become a biohazard himself. We must emulsify him. Unlike his police force, we will need ballots, not billy clubs.

WHY ALEX PENELAS HAS EARNED YOUR VOTE FOR MIAMI-DADE MAYOR Damian Pardo
A
lex Penelas was a champion of LGBT rights before the term existed. He didn’t simply vote for a piece of legislation or show up at events. He didn’t “evolve” on the issues like the Clintons or President Obama. He owned it from day one. I’ve been mesmerized by the enthusiasm and the number of texts, calls and emails I have received supporting Alex’s return to office, especially from younger folks wanting to learn more. As people learn more about him, they are immediately attracted to his courage and leadership. In the ‘90s, Alex gave SAVE (Safeguarding American Values for Everyone) the green light to move forward on the Miami-Dade County Human Rights Ordinance (which would protect the community from discrimination). He let us know he would not veto the legislation and would provide support for passage. Because of his encouragement and support, SAVE began lobbying the Miami-Dade County Commission. Years later, he continued his support when the ordinance was introduced again in 1997 for first reading, and during its reintroduction and passage the following year. His own brother, Luis Penelas, was an active SAVE DADE volunteer. Alex not only encouraged commissioners to vote in favor, but he signed the legislation immediately overturning 22 years of fear and discrimination shepherded by Anita Bryant. Due to his support of the Human Rights Ordinance, Alex faced a recall effort led by the Christian conservative group, the American Family Association. Not only did he fend off the recall, but he also sat side by side with SAVE Dade volunteers to raise money to help defend the ordinance from conservative groups hoping to repeal it over the next several years. From the ‘90s to the early 2000s, Alex supported the HIV/AIDS Planning Council and funded HIV/AIDS direct services, education, prevention and awareness. He often stood by the LGBT community when people
with AIDS were being stigmatized and discriminated. Every year he would test for HIV publicly and in media to raise awareness and help eliminate stigma. Alex stood with us side by side. He received the same kind of hate we did. He had people spit at him and excoriate him. He demonstrated the courage and leadership of an extraordinary leader. The same person he is today. As a progressive, Alex supports tackling economic inequality, addressing climate change and facing systemic discrimination. He is an extraordinary bridge builder and is able to bring many different community groups to the table to accomplish goals and move Miami forward. Some of the goals he accomplished in office in addition to LGBT issues include: helped create the homeless trust (which became a national model), passed the half penny tax for transportation, passed statewide referendum for universal pre-K and limit classroom size, closed gun show loopholes and introduced county wide gun safety legislation, reformed the Public Health Trust, introduced inclusive language in government Spanish and Creole, adopted inclusive and diverse appointments in his administration, introduced single member districts, introduced fair cost of living adjustments and merit based raises, introduced one of the first living wage ordinances in Florida, funded the independent police review panel every year while in office with increases (something today’s sitting commissioners, currently running for Mayor, have not done). Based on his record, courage, leadership and commitment, there is one clear choice for the Mayor of Miami-Dade County — Alex Penelas.
ALEX STOOD WITH US SIDE BY SIDE. HE RECEIVED THE SAME KIND OF HATE WE DID.

can turn when the quality of Judgement is out of balance. Let me give you an example of what I am saying. Imagine you live in the apartment of your dreams… in that apartment you’ve just spent $50,000 on a brand new hand made special order white wool 12 x 12 carpet… for some reason you’ve also acquired a Great Dane. Here’s the scenario: you come home one day to find a Great Dane-sized mess
on your carpet. Do you (1) run to your dog to comfort it, or (2) yell at the dog and run around screaming about the mess? Once you’ve figured that out for yourself, know that the carpet is your life as you’ve worked for it all these years, the mess is the world and the Great Dane is all the people in it. For the sake of all of our lives, may you grow to view the world through the quality of Lovingkindness.

LIFESTYLE TWO GUYS AND A DOG
EVEN ALLIES CAN ASSUME THEIR KIDS ARE STRAIGHT Brian McNaught

e were having dinner on the screened porch overlooking the lake. Our nephew and niece had invited their best friends to spend a few days with us at the lodge. The children of both couples are also best friends. They were sitting nearby at their own table. One parent speculated that their not yet 9-year-old son would end up marrying my grandniece, who is not yet seven. Another parent suggested that my grandnephew would end up marrying their daughter. “What about one of the boys marrying another boy?” asked Ray. After a little, awkward laughter, there was recognition that Ray was right. They were assuming their children were straight. Our nephew grew up with out and proud gay uncles. His liberal wife and he asked me to baptize their three children. They speak up on our behalf at parties with conservative neighbors and friends. I trust them totally. And yet, they’re just a wee bit heterosexist. The good news is they admit it. “We thought a lot about what happened last night in our conversation,” my nephew said. “It was totally heterosexist.” His friends agreed. Heterosexism is not just the assumption of heterosexuality in another, it is a value that heterosexuality is to be preferred. Yes, one’s child might be gay, but let’s hope, for the sake of the child, that they’re not. That attitude is easily understood. My mother cried when I came out nearly 50 years ago because she knew, as she said, that the world was going to be horrible to me, and there was nothing she could do to protect me. But, heterosexism, like racism and sexism, is based upon the false and dangerous assumption that one attraction, race, or sex is better than the other. Better for whom, and for what? “What if everyone was gay? The human race would end.” I got that question more often than you might imagine when I spoke on college campuses in the 1970s and ‘80s. It’s a silly question because orientation isn’t a choice, and the percentage of homosexuals in a population seems to be consistent cross culturally. Also, gay people can produce children through sperm and egg donation. The question is a distraction from the point. What’s so bad about being gay, or being lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer? As is true with “Black Lives Matter,” the point of Gay Pride is that there is no reason to be anything but proud about being
THE BURDEN IS ON ALL OF US TO SPEAK UP KINDLY BUT STRONGLY, AS LGBT PEOPLE, AND AS OUR ALLIES, THAT BEING STRAIGHT IS THE NORM, BUT NOT THE PREFERRED STATUS.

gay because it is nature’s or God’s intention. I am a magnificent manifestation of the universe, which is love in every consensual, non-exploitative form. As a gay man, I have gifts I would less likely have as a straight man. My love for, and from, Ray is as deep, strong, committed, life-giving, sacrificial, and natural as that of any heterosexual. Parents should not only allow for the fact that their child might be gay, but be happy if that were true. Children need to know that their parents value gay relationships as equal to straight relationships. Both, or neither, might produce grandchildren, and both, or neither might be a blessing to the parents. If children only see and hear gay relationships affirmed in the presence of gay people, they will not trust the sincerity or depth of their parent’s feelings about being gay. Ray’s and my grandnieces and grandnephews experience love, joy, laughter, and deep caring when they’re with us. When they’re not with us, they hear their parents speak with deep love for us, without qualification. But, that doesn’t mean they trust their parents will be pleased if they come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer. The same is true of race. One of my best friends in grade school had very liberal parents who treated black people
with respect and kindness. They would be livid if anyone suggested to them that they were racist. And yet, when my friend fell in love with a woman who was Black, his parents refused to go to the wedding, and forbid his siblings from attending. If the children at dinner on the screened porch were listening to their parents discuss who might marry whom, they initially would have had reinforced that heterosexuality was preferred. But if they listened long enough, they would have heard their gay uncles speak up, and their parents acknowledge that, yes, one of their children might be gay, and that would be just fine. Furthermore, if the next night they listened in too, they would have heard their parents acknowledge that it was totally heterosexist of them to make assumptions, and to speak in such limited terms. The burden is on all of us to speak up kindly but strongly, as LGBT people, and as our allies, that being straight is the norm, but not the preferred status. It may be probable that a child is straight, but that makes it no more likely that the child will be happy, and end up in a healthy, loving relationship. Listen up. Being gay can be an amazing, totally fulfilling life experience. If you tell me you’re gay, I’m very happy for you. Your parents may or may not come to your wedding, but that’s about them and their heterosexism, not about you.

hat many readers of restaurant reviews don’t realize is that a review of a good dining experience is the most difficult review to write. The reviewer must walk a fine line between praising a place and sounding like a publicist. No chance of that happening with this review. So much of our experience was negative, that I was hesitant to even review this place. However, I decided that there were two reasons to do so; to warn potential diners and, hopefully give the management some tips on how to improve the dining experience. We arrived a few minutes before seven on a weeknight and found the place eerily empty. There was one other table inside and two on the terrace: on Las Olas in season! As soon as our butts hit the chairs, we were handed a menu and asked about our drink order. I understand the staff had little to do, but give folks a chance to settle in. We asked for water for the table and perused the menu. My first impression was that it was a chain restaurant, the laminated tri-fold menu had a very Olive Garden feel. When our friendly server arrived with our waters, I asked her about the Tuesday wine special, she had no idea what I was talking about. I then showed her the card on the table advertising the half-priced wine event.
It turned out that it was for all wines by the glass. My sauvignon blanc was one of the best I’ve had and a deal even without the special. Our dining companions ordered the tomato bisque as a first course. A few minutes later another server showed up at our table to take our order, we then informed him that we had already ordered. A minute later a third server delivered the steaming bowls of soup and a basket of warm bread. After one taste, both of our friends determined that the soup was too salty. (I tasted it and agreed.) Suddenly there was not a server to be found. We waved down the host who had seated us and explained the problem and he whisked the soups away. We chatted while we waited for the soup to return. But we didn’t have much time, our entrees arrived a mere minute or two later. We told the server to cancel the soups since we now had our entrees before us. My husband’s gnocchi was drowning in sauce, but was otherwise well-prepared, although we did have to flag down our server to get some parmesan cheese. My grilled steak arrived with a good char and was perfectly cooked to order. However, it was loaded with gristle, making a good portion of it inedible. Our friend, who also ordered the steak, had only one little piece of fatty gristle. Obviously not prime cuts of beef,
OBVIOUSLY NOT PRIME CUTS OF BEEF, WHICH AT $32 FOR AN 8 OZ. STEAK IT SHOULD BE.

which at $32 for an 8 oz. steak it should be. When our dishes were removed, the inedible portions of my steak were sitting on the side of my plate. If our server noticed, she made no mention of it. The host presented us with the dessert menu and raved highly about the fregola meringata. Our server, also recommended the dish, so we felt we had to check it out. That dessert almost saved the day. Crunchy bits of meringue studded a confection of vanilla ice cream, strawberries and dulce de leche sauce. It was delish and the serving was plentiful enough for the four of us to share. When the bills were presented the soups were included. We flagged down our server and informed her of the mistake. She then apologized saying she had no idea we had returned our soups! The wine also was not discounted. It seems as if there’s a major problem in communication among the front of the house and the kitchen. As we walked out of the restaurant a couple was perusing the menu. I said one word to them and it’s the same I will share with you, “Don’t.”

ave you been glued to the television during the COVID-19 pandemic? How many series have you binge watched over the past four months? Are you looking for the next hit show? GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (including SFGN arts & entertainment editor J.W. Arnold) have also been watching and recently weighed in with nominees for the Dorian TV Awards, their favorites in broadcast, streaming and subscription television dramas, comedies, news programs and films. The Pop network comedy “Schitt’s Creek” led the pack with seven nominations, while “Hollywood” — Netflix’s ambitious, starstudded reimagining of Tinseltown’s early days — said “hooray” to six nods, including all four acting categories. HBO’s fact-based TV movie “Bad Education” and criticallyacclaimed miniseries “Watchmen” followed with four Dorian nominations each “With a global pandemic, severe economic strife, the gut-punches of racism and police brutality proverbially hitting us all — this might not seem like the right time for fluffy showbiz awards,” said GALECA President Diane Anderson-Minshall, CEO and editorial director of Pride Media (The Advocate, Out, Pride, Plus) in a statement. “But it may be more important than ever now to embrace and champion quality stories and push the real Hollywood’s entitled writers, producers, executives and PR reps out of their bubble and into truly reflecting America’s diversity for a change. They have so much power, and
entertainment journalism groups like GALECA can make them accountable,” she added. In addition to “Schitt’s Creek,” a previous Dorian Award winner when GALECA combined its film and TV awards into one ceremony, other series snagging multiple nods are Netflix’s “The Crown,” “Dead to Me” and “Ozark,” and FX’s “Mrs. America” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” Other past winners up for awards include “Killing Eve” (BBC America) and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (VH1). The LGBTQ critics also present trademark categories, including “Wilde Wit of the Year,” named for Oscar Wilde and honoring a performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse. Nominees include Dan Levy, Randy Rainbow, Hannah Gadsby, Cate Blanchett and Trevor Noah. Vying for campiest TV show are “The Great” (Hulu), “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (VH1), and Netflix’s “AJ and the Queen,” “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings” and the surprise COVID-19 lockdown hit “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.” “We’re again proud of our members’ eclectic choices,” said executive director John Griffiths, noting “GALECA is discussing actionable steps to bolster representation of People of Color, women, trans, non-binary and genderqueer professional journalists in our ranks — for the vital big picture and to make our Dorian Awards as rich and reflective of the LGBTQ eye as possible.”
The 2020 Dorian TV Awards will be announced Aug. 21. For a full list of nominees, go to GALECA.org.

TRANS WOMEN WALK THE RIGHT MILLIE IS PATH ON MEXICAN MIGRATION PAWS-UP PERFECT John McDonald

altimore film director Tim Wolfer wants to give them a platform. Them would be transgender immigrants. “The Right Girls” is a film about trans women escaping harmful and dangerous conditions in Central America and their journey to the U.S.-Mexico border. “I hope that it really gave them an agency and a voice,” Wolfer said in a telephone interview. “So many people in that situation never get the opportunity. I hope the film gives them a platform.” Wolfer shot the film in 2018, asking four trans women if he could follow their efforts to reach the United States. What the millennial cisgender straight White male has is a gem of a documentary. “The Right Girls” will be released Aug. 11 on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. It is an official selection of film festivals in New York, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Seattle and Buenos Aires. In a telephone interview via an interpreter, one of film’s leading figures, Johana Stefani, said it was crime that forced her to leave her home country of Honduras. The film begins with Stefani, 29, braided hair and backpack, joining with other trans travelers on the migrant caravan. She said she hopes her journey motivates others to be true to themselves and find happiness. “It’s hard but worth it in the end,” Stefani said. A Black trans woman, Stefani’s feminine demeanor and fashion often draws whistles and hollers in the crowd and honks from passing vehicles. Like many on the caravan, getting rides to the next stop was a challenge. Wolfer’s film captures moments of joy from the women as they are reunited after another day traveling. There is also frustration when officials in Oaxaca, Mexico

deny the women a ride; a tumultuous breakup at the border — and much more in this 1-hour and 25 minute film. Wolfer hasn’t shied away from heated global issues before. In 2010, he documented the evacuations in Haiti and the ethics of international adoptions. Wolfer said he considers Adopting Haiti his best work to date. The 33-year-old director is joined on “The Right Girls’’ by producers Siobhan Luikham and Graham Ehlers Sheldon, coproducer Amador “AJ” Jaojoco, writer Jonny Orlansky and composer Zachary Walter. “I hope this film gives them a lot of agency and power,” said Wolfer. “They are a vulnerable population in so many ways.” “The Right Girls” also challenged the filmmaker’s journalistic ethics. “Once there’s imminent danger you aren’t supposed to interfere but at the same time once your humanity sets in, you feel horrible about the situation,” Wolfer said. “I’m glad they made it through. It’s horrible what they went through.” The film begins with tweets from President Trump condemning the caravan. Stefani is seen circulating in a crowd with Valentyna and Chantal of El Salvador. “Don’t give up,” Chantel says as the camera cuts to a stream of people climbing aboard trucks with Isac’s song Sparkle declaring “I’m not where I’m supposed to be.” The group was part of the estimated 7,200 member migrant caravan walking to the American border.
