Editorial
Damon Scott Louisiana man who spent nearly two decades in prison for a $10 offer of oral sex recently had his sentence reversed. Unfortunately it came only a few weeks before Shawn Williams’ 20-year sentence was complete. But the reversal has been seen as an important symbolic victory among advocates who argued one of the laws used to convict him — “crimes against nature” — was blatantly discriminatory. In 2001, Williams, now 47, offered oral sex to a plainclothes detective in New Orleans. He had a cocaine pipe with residue in his pocket at the time of the incident and also had prior felony convictions on his record. As reported by nola.com, New Orleans prosecutors went after Williams with full force under the crimes against nature statute. At a one-day trial, a six-person jury found him guilty of cocaine possession and oral sex solicitation. The law treated soliciting oral or anal sex as a felony, while soliciting vaginal sex was a misdemeanor. Judge Julian Parker handed down the 20-year sentence, but called it “cruel and unusual.” He said he had no choice because 20 years was the minimum sentence allowed under a habitual offender law at the time. Parker could have sentenced Williams to life in prison. The prior convictions that raised Williams’ sentence were all for minor offenses like drug possession and solicitation. “Even though Mr. Williams did go to trial and he did take up the time of the court, the public defender and the district attorney — and he refused his 40-month plea bargain — he is still a human being and in the opinion of

the Court is not deserving of the punishment that the Legislature has forced me to give him,” Parker said during sentencing. Williams’ single-court appeal was denied. In early July New Orleans’ new district attorney, Jason Williams, petitioned for the court to reverse the sentence citing its link to the controversial crimes against nature statute as “fundamentally unfair.” Judge Nandi Campbell agreed and issued an order July 8 for Williams to be set free. Nola.com reported that Louisiana has criminalized anal and oral sex under crimes against nature statute since the 19th century. By the early 2000s, soliciting such sex acts was a felony. By 2011, the Louisiana Legislature had done away with the sentencing enhancement for the crimes against nature solicitation. But the legal changes only applied to arrests going forward, not to existing convictions like that of Williams. According to University of Central Florida research, Florida enacted crimes against nature laws in 1868. While most sections
of the law were repealed in 1971, the state still carries “unnatural and lascivious acts” statutes that have been in place since 1917. Section one of the statute reads: “Whoever commits any unnatural and lascivious acts with another person shall be punished by fine not exceeding $500, or by imprisonment not exceeding six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment.” Meanwhile, Williams’ case is also considered one in a long line of others that have disproportionately used drug laws against Black people like Williams. Nola. com also reported that critics say the law has been used against transgender women of color as well. “This was a law that was used to enslave us,” Wendi Cooper, the executive director of the transgender rights group Transcending Women, said in a nola.com report. She said Williams was sentenced “behind something that doesn’t make sense, but also did 20 years in a correctional facility for a practice that probably the entire world engages in.”

IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE G Bisexual
FORMER HEARTS STARLET PLAYER COMES OUT AS BISEXUAL Jahmal Howlett-Mundle, the centreback who plays for Sheppey United in the ninth tier of English football, recently came out as bisexual. Howlett-Mundle admitted that the stigma attached within the sport made him hesitant about coming out. However, seeing other ex-professionals and leading men in other sports inspired him to be open about his sexuality. “I certainly felt it was the right time to be honest with myself and my loved ones and by being open about my sexuality, maybe it will give others the confidence to follow suit,” Howlett-Mundle said in a statement. “Football still has room for improvement in terms of players coming out and being themselves, but with the likes of Thomas Hitzlsperger and Thomas

JAMIE LEE CURTIS REVEALS HER YOUNGER CHILD IS TRANS
Jamie Lee Curtis has spoken out about her youngest child, Ruby, being transgender and how the transition has changed the way she understands gender. Curtis told AARP Magazine that she and her husband, Christopher Guest, “have watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby,” and that she was able to toss out that “old idea” that gender is fixed. Ruby is a computer gaming editor and will get married next year at a wedding that Curtis will officiate. “There is nothing harder than being a child and I am a product of a lot of divorces. It is what it is, but I think, as a result, I have always had a feeling for vulnerable children.” She is looking forward to this next chapter for Ruby

BIDEN APPOINTS LESBIAN RABBI TO LEAD RELIGIOUS FREEDOM COMMISSION
To add to a long list of LGBT nominations, President Joe Biden appointed lesbian Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum to serve on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Kleinbaum currently serves as the chief rabbi of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, an LGBT+ synagogue in New York. “[Kleinbaum] was installed as CBST’s first rabbi in 1992, arriving at the height of the AIDS crisis when the synagogue was in desperate need of pastoral care and spiritual leadership,” the White House said in a statement. “She guided the congregation through a period of loss and change, while addressing social issues and building a strong and deeply spiritual community.” “Rabbi Kleinbaum is a faithful leader for the LGBTQ and Jewish communities. SFGN PUBLISHER NOW TACKLING COVID AS WELL SFGN Staff

ess than two weeks after a successful brain surgery addressing a small tumor in his cerebellum, which proved to be benign, SFGN Publisher Norm Kent is now tackling the virulent delta strain of the COVID-19 virus. Likely contracted during his surgical stay at the University of Miami Medical Center which was teeming with hundreds of newly diagnosed COVID patients daily, Kent took ill over the weekend with a high fever. Sent to Holy Cross by his medical team Saturday evening, Kent tested positive for the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus. He is now in quarantine. Kent was vaccinated months ago with the Moderna vaccine. On Sunday morning Kent was administered the monoclonal antibody infusion. “It’s as newspapers are reporting,” Kent said. “Hospitals are being overwhelmed, and Ron DeSantis is the leading Republican candidate for President in 2024? Unreal!” “It can beat you down emotionally as well as physically. For me, with a medical history of respiratory and heart conditions, along with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, it can frankly be a matter of Life and Death. I could be on a ventilator in hours, or at home watching baseball. But the studies show the antibody
treatments are working great with vaccinated persons. I have faith in that science. Please, take yourself to a vaccination center.” Kent said he tested negative July 18 when he left the hospital after his brain surgery. Even though he’s vaccinated he’s still worried. “COVID just got me. It is on its second day. Is it just going to go away? Will the antibodies hold it back and make it simply be like a bad flu or a day being pissed off by your husband? Or is it like the first set of rain bands before a hurricane sweeps your body?” he asked. Despite being sick Kent met his current predicament with a joke. “This is just life, you take what comes with humor and grace. My best friend, a great lawyer and thespian, an amazing straight ally to the gay community, Alvin Entin, died of COVID last October. And he called me up on Sunday out of the blue and said to me ‘Norm, I have good news and bad news for you, my friend. The good news is that there is baseball in Heaven. The bad news is you may be pitching in a few weeks.” “Hey Alvin,” Kent replied, “Not if I have anything to say about it. I’m going to be like the cockroach that walks out of your microwave after you cook a bowl of rice, and says, ‘that was a nice sauna.’”
Norm Kent recommends that anyone he has come into contact with over the last several weeks go for a COVID test.

The delta variant, a particularly resilient and transmissible strain of COVID, is responsible for many of the cases which are mostly among unvaccinated people. The issue hit home after public meetings on July 27-28 at Wilton Manors City Hall. The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports a mask-less person in attendance has subsequently tested positive. The city confirmed the basic details but, as of this writing, still has not posted anything publicly on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. The resurgence has local agencies adjusting on the fly to stay safe and still help South Florida’s underserved communities. “Unfortunately, due to the increasing COVID cases, SunServe has returned to adhering to pandemic protocol,” Terry Dyer, SunServe’s director of Development told SFGN. “This includes wearing masks throughout the offices, temperature checks, questionnaires, etc. In order to avoid large gatherings in our lobby, we have gone back to appointments only as well.” The Pride Center at Equality Park developed a flexible plan so they can quickly adjust to changing health situations. Executive Director Stephen Fallon says the spike in cases may be encouraging the vaxhesitant to get the shots. “We had seen a steady drop off in people requesting the vaccine through June and early July. Last week, we had a noticeable increase in people requesting the vaccine at each of our locations.” He also says Latinos Salud continues to see patients and notes that they never closed their doors during the pandemic. “Some of our clients had been laid low with COVID, especially in the early months of the pandemic. We haven’t heard of any hospitalizations in many months.” SunServe’s Dyer says despite the virus surge they are working to make sure everyone who needs help has safe access. “Our homeless clientele continues to struggle with access to testing thus not knowing if they have contracted the virus. We are in the process of discussing ways to address these gaps in care. One of which is to potentially begin testing onsite for those in need. In the meantime, we remain in close contact with our clients doing wellness checks and providing as many referrals as possible.”

Stefanie Dolson, often called “Big Mama Stef,” helped claim the win for Team USA 18-15 in the fourth quarter against the Russian Olympic Committee. Due to COVID-19 protocols, she was given the honor of placing the medals on the necks of her teammates Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young. Dolson, who came out in 2016 and first played on the U.S. national team as a college student, is the first out athlete representing the United States to earn a gold medal this year. KANSAS STUDENT’S COMPLAINT MAKES SCHOOL DISTRICT SAFER Following an independent investigation into the actions of school personnel, North Lyon County School District has told the ACLU of Kansas that it will take steps to ensure a safe space for all. When eighth-grader Izzy Dieker told a fellow student that she was a lesbian, her bus driver reported her and her principal suspended her for using profane language in front of younger students. Dieker filed a Title IX complaint, and the Kansas Association of School Boards found that the action taken against the student amounted to sexual harassment. ACLU of Kansas Legal Director Sharon Brett said in a statement, “While we regret that our involvement and Izzy’s successful Title IX complaint were ever necessary, we were glad to learn that the district would take steps to ensure similar

All students in North Lyon County should feel welcomed, respected, and safe.” The school district has committed to LGBT anti-discrimination training for its employees, clear communication of Title IX laws to students, and publicizing anti-discrimination laws as they apply to educators and district employees.

SCHOOL BOARDS RISK NON-COMPLIANCE OVER TRANS STUDENTS School boards across Virginia are having varied responses to the state department of education’s guidance on treatment of transgender students, from swift adoption of new policies in some counties to outright refusal in others. The model policies provide peerreviewed guidance on access to facilities, respecting trans students’ pronouns, and competency training for school employees. School boards are tasked with outlining practices that are consistent with or more comprehensive than the model policies, which were introduced into law in April as House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, and upheld by the Circuit Court of Virginia after two conservative groups filed complaints against the Virginia Department of Education. After school boards in Bedford and Augusta counties voted not to implement any changes to the current policy, Superintendent of Public Instruction James F. Lane issued a memo, reminding the boards, “like all other mandates on local school boards resulting from General Assembly action, local school boards must fulfill this directive in order to be in compliance with state law.”

POLITICAL ATTACKS ON GAY TV SHOW RAISE CONCERNS ABOUT RIGHTS A TV drama about a male love triangle is becoming a great hit with viewers, but opposition from pro-Beijing lawmakers is raising concerns that broader liberties might be caught up in China’s political crackdown. According to the Wall Street Journal, over the last month, hundreds of thousands of people have watched “Ossan’s Love,” a 15-episodic drama about a relationship between three guys who work in a real estate office. Rights activists commended the performance for assisting in the mainstreaming of homosexual partnerships in Hong Kong. Junius Ho, a vocal pro-Beijing legislator, denounced the program as “marijuana covered in sugar,” implying that it was damaging to society. His comments stoked fears that

AFRICA PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA PROMISES GAY MARRIAGE The President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, wants to change Zambia’s long-standing unfavorable attitude toward the LGBT population. Zambia’s current legal position on same-sex relationships and orientation is outdated, based on laws and ideas from a bygone era when the country was still a British colony. According to The American Reporter, currently, same-sex relationships fall under the country’s sodomy laws and are punishable by up to 14 years in prison. EUROPE TRANS ACTIVISTS OBJECT TO VAX PASS THAT WOULD REVEAL THEIR GENDER IDENTITY
Transgender activists in Italy have expressed their opposition to the coronavirus “Green Pass,” alleging that it would expose information about their gender. “Transgender persons will have to display a QR code that will relate to personal information, which creates a lot of discomforts and exposes the person,” Christian Cristalli, president and cofounder of the advocacy organization Gruppo Trans Bologna, told Breitbart. In the case of vaccination passports, privacy has been a big concern. Rob Shavell, co-founder and CEO of the internet privacy firm Abine, told Breitbart London in March that there was a possibility of data leakage. OCEANIA NEW ZEALAND INTRODUCES BILL TO OUTLAW CONVERSION THERAPY On July 30, New Zealand introduced legislation that would punish those who practice LGBT conversion therapy with up to five years in prison. According to Justice Minister Kris Faafoi, the new regulations are aimed at stopping practices that do not work, are widely criticized, and do harm. “Conversion practices have no place in modern New Zealand,” Faafoi told AsiaOne. “They are based on the false belief that any person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression is broken and in need of fixing.” Under the proposed legislation, anyone who performs conversion techniques on a person under the age of 18 or on someone with impaired decision-making abilities might face up

ens, pencils, notebooks and a backpack to carry them, the basics many people took for granted growing up are luxuries to tens of thousands of South Florida students. Before they head back to class on Aug. 18, The Pride Center at Equality Park is helping kids get geared up. They’re joining forces with Broward Education Foundation (BEF) to make sure everyone starts the new year with basic school supplies. “Giving back to the local community is part of our mission, and we are proud to support BEF’s year-long efforts to provide so many deserving students with the tools they need to learn and thrive,” said Robert Boo, CEO of The Pride Center at Equality Park. “Basic school supplies like backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, erasers, glue sticks are a luxury for a large segment of children in our community. We want to level the learning field with our school supply drive and encourage everyone to join us.” A $10 donation to BEF will supply a student with all the basic needs to meet the first day of school head on. Or you can directly donate supplies on the list below by calling Hector Javier, the store manager of BEF’s School Supply, at 754-321-9020. “Basic school supplies are always in demand, but even more so now,” said Shea Ciriago, BEF’S CEO. “It’s vital we do everything in our power to provide students with the tools they need to stay engaged and focused.

WILTON MANORS CITY COMMISSIONER TALKS ABOUT HIS COVID BREAKTHROUGH CASE John Hayden
L
ike so much of South Florida, Wilton Manors is dealing with a surge in COVID infections. Wilton Manors City Commissioner Chris Caputo is one of the recent cases. He was diagnosed after attending meetings at Wilton Manors City Hall over July 27-28, prompting many of those he came into close contact to get tested and take appropriate precautions. Despite him and his partner both being fully vaccinated, Caputo found himself with a “breakthrough” case. hen Anita Bryant’s granddaughter, Sarah Green, told her she was a lesbian, Bryant, to say the least, wasn’t thrilled. Bryant, the anti-gay crusader who led the “Save Our Children” campaign to persuade voters to repeal the ordinance that banned LGBT discrimination in 1977, called Green to sing happy birthday and told her that if she had faith, the right man would come along. “I hope that he doesn’t come along, because I’m gay, and I don’t want a man to come along,” Green recalled during a podcast with Slate. Bryant responded by telling Green that “homosexuality is a delusion invented by the devil” and that she should focus on loving God. “It’s very hard to argue with someone who thinks that an integral part of your identity is just an evil delusion,” Green told Slate. Green spoke about her relationship with her grandmother, and even once thought Bryant didn’t really hate LGBT people, but started to look at her differently once she realized she was gay when she was a teenager, according to the podcast. Years later, Green is planning a wedding with her fiancée and is debating whether or not to invite Bryant.

Robert Green Jr., Green’s father and Bryant’s son, shared on the podcast that he is the one who told Bryant that she is engaged to a woman. “All at once, her eyes widened, her smile opened, and out came the oddest sound: ‘Oh.’ Instead of taking Sarah as she is, my mom has chosen to pray that Sarah will eventually conform to my mom’s idea of what God wants Sarah to be,” he said. Despite the tension between them, Sarah Green said she doesn’t hate Bryant but “feels sorry for her.” “I just kind of feel bad for her,” she said. “And I think as much as she hopes that I will figure things out and come back to God, I kind of hope that she’ll figure things out.” Bryant was a spokeswoman for Florida orange growers in the ‘70s when she gained new fame with her opposition to gay rights. She became an enemy of the LGBT community, and at one point, had a pie thrown at her face by an activist, as The Advocate reported.

FROM BRAIN SURGERY TO COVID My New Life as a Patient
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
I
n a Facebook post the other night, I saw that my long-time friend, and one time publisher himself, Brad Casey, wished me good health as I recover from “successful brain surgery.” Very kind of you, Brad. Thank you. Unfortunately, now I have COVID. I am not a physician, but I don’t think you want to invite this guy into your house. However, I want to share with you that the miraculous surgical medical procedures accomplished by The Brain Institute and Neuroscience Center at the University of Miami Medical Center represent just the beginning of many steps. I will not be playing golf at the Coral Springs Country Club anytime soon. When your body and being are prepped for invasive surgical procedures, it is simultaneously examined for a host of other medicallyconsequential matters. These investigations have suggested there are a variety of collateral situations I still face ahead. They are not exactly Athlete’s Foot. From immediate ambulatory decline to potential issues of cognitive and cogitative diminution, I suspect that I will not be able to play shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series this fall. However, they do have a batboy that I once fooled around with about 10 years ago in their clubhouse locker rooms. With the support, staff, and team in place here at the South Florida Gay News, we will continue to print a solid newspaper and online publication that I think is the most journalistically sound and aesthetically pleasing weekly LGBT publication in the United States. Going forward, this means empowering my Associate Publisher, Jason Parsley, to take on more of a role, which even includes giving
him a minority shareholder interest in SFGN. When Piero Guidugli and I founded the South Florida Gay News in 2010, it was never to become a nightmarish tabloid. Our goal was to illuminate and showcase the LGBT life of South Florida and our community of friends. Boy, Piero, did that ever cost you a lot of money to get that privilege. Thank you. Under any stewardship, one thing the South Florida Gay News can continue to do is work harder at being more transparent and trusted — for you. We like to think we achieve this weekly, but in truth, we may have failed too often. No one is ever perfect, except maybe that blonde surfer boy I saw last week on Alhambra Drive. Years ago, we wrote some unfavorable stories about the Pride Center, and its respected executive director and community leader, Robert Boo. We didn’t intentionally set out to hurt anyone. But nevertheless, hurt them we did. Meanwhile, other stories like the criminal enterprise that was George Castrataro evaded us. I am ever so sorry we hurt good people and the residual pain that some of those stories have caused them and their loved ones. It’s on me. No one else. We missed the mark. Man, a newspaper has to smell the taint of fraud as it occurs, not after the victims are hurt. It’s our duty to strive to do better individually every day, no matter what profession we are in. The Pride Center at Equality Park remains the heart and soul of a remarkable South Florida gay community, a cherished entity we should preserve and promote, every day, every week, every month. They save lives. Our own. A newspaper can also be the heart and soul of a community. That is what I strive for. Technology has made this a tougher task,
I SUSPECT THAT I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY SHORTSTOP FOR THE LOS ANGELES DODGERS IN THE WORLD SERIES THIS FALL.

not an easier one. The Internet enables a lie to go halfway around the world before the truth catches up with it. You are fighting “the motion of the ocean” minute by minute. There is never an excuse for not being as good as you can be. You create the world you live in by each and every choice you make every day. If you want better outcomes, make better decisions. Right now, knowing my passion for work and enterprise, my physicians have suggested that I focus on getting better, rather than worrying about whether your ad made the right side of the book. I can and will do that. Whether I contracted COVID in the hospital in Miami during brain surgery last month or not, I found out about my diagnosis this past weekend during normal follow-up testing.
If you have seen or met with me in the last two weeks, just go get yourself tested as a precautionary measure. Vaccinated or not, it is still prudent. I may not have gotten to travel cross country this summer with my best friends. It is what it is. Life happens when you are making other plans. Sometimes it knocks you down. For gay people, we know this only too well. We have been getting knocked down our entire lifetime. Nevertheless, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over, stronger for having defeated the enemies and viruses that tried to conquer you. Keep a song in your hearts, a smile on your lips, and have an ice cream cone with sprinkles along the way. See you soon.

THE MEANING OF OUR MOMS x
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
E
very week, as SFGN is created from scratch anew, our graphic designer, Brendon Lies, who now lives in Germany with his dog Willow, tries to send me a daily visual of the paper as it is created. This morning, a Wednesday, late in the process, since the paper goes to print tonight, I noticed the date read Aug. 5. It caught me off guard. Maybe I have been otherwise distracted these past few weeks, but I just realized today is the 10th anniversary of my mom’s passing. She would have been 100 years old this year. I am simply not going to let this issue go to print without writing something about her life. I am just like you. I loved my mom more than anything in the world. She was my passion, my princess, my source of strength and love for 90 years. She cared for me not only as a child but as an adult. Twenty years ago, when I was 50 years old and diagnosed with lymphoma, I was living alone. I began a painstaking and debilitating nine-month course of chemotherapy with a new roommate. Mom. She left her home in Tamarac to take care of me in Fort Lauderdale. I was a child again. Mom fed me in the morning and diapered me in the afternoon. Do you know how special that was? We each have special stories of our moms that we cherish. Let me share a few here today. My most popular radio show is on Fridays, when I team up with the personable Mike Mayo, the retired journalist from the Sun Sentinel. We cavalierly talk food and sports, Brooklyn and life. There is nothing more beautiful than when Mike talks about Mom Mayo and her matzoh balls. They melt in your mouth.
Now if you think I should be worried about my brain surgery last month or possible gamma knife radiotherapy tomorrow, consider this. When Ma Mayo was in her 80s, she found out she had a malignant tumor in her brain, and with Mike and his family by her side, she underwent a cranial lobotomy. Today, she is home making meatballs. Our graphic designer is from Fargo, North Dakota, not the most progressive place to grow up transgender. But when it came time for his surgery, Bren’s most amazing super mom, Jennifer, was by his side in Miami. Last year, when so many of you were separated by your moms because of COVID, heartfelt Facebook posts celebrated your love for your mothers; the concerns, the cares, the agonizing pain you were going through. One of my radio show’s most frequent guests to bring sunshine to our lives was the Vice Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Steve Glassman. Steve is not only an incredible advocate for our community of all causes just and right, he has become a dear friend. A schoolteacher he once was. A mentor he today is. Whenever I introduced Steve on the air to talk about the COVID Crisis, he would first say hello to his mom, living in a neighborhood assisted living facility he and his husband were not allowed to visit. A radio kept them together. Then I think, too, of how for the past year, Robert Boo, the executive director of the Pride Center at Equality Park, was not promoting the agency’s programs at the necessarily shuttered campus. Instead, Robert was posting pictures of his incredibly loving mother at a nearby nursing

home he was not permitted into either. I am breaking into a newspaper nearly already laid out, and probably causing a story scheduled to be published today to be postponed until next week. Our moms are worth that. So today is the 10th anniversary of my mom’s passing, and nine decades of life and love and laughter, from bungalow colonies in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, to terrifying condos in Tamarac, come to mind. And a small tear comes to my eye, but a bigger smile to my heart. And I close by taking this moment to
thanking whatever gods may be that I could tell this story right here, right now in a free community newspaper we all share, because you have invested in us for over a decade. And I thank the powers that be, which enable a paper like ours, SFGN, to showcase and illuminate not only our own lives, but of all those we love and live for; who gave us the chance to become who we have become, and who we are. So go about your day, and if you can, if you are still lucky enough to do so, say hello to your mom. There is no rule that says Mother’s Day only has to be once a year. See you soon. Love you mom.

The beloved Emma Roberts thanks the gays for a meme of herself that escalated to be a viral sensation. Roberts took to social media to thank “the gays and whoever else” about making the meme go viral. According to PRIDE, “It all started with Roberts posting a *cough* candid *cough* video of herself on the beach to her Instagram. In the video, Roberts is flipping her hair, giggling, and sticking out her tongue — and honestly looking gorgeous — to the song ‘Happiness is a Butterfly’ by Lana Del Rey. Basically, it was begging for memeification, and the ‘gays and whoever else’ came through, quickly making it go viral.” You can find some examples of the meme on Twitter where a slew of the

Roberts has also done some recent activities to show her love for the LGBT community. One such action being that she unfollowed DaBaby after his homophobic comments.

I know my fans know where my heart lies and that I stand 100% with the LGBTQ community. We need to come together to fight the stigma and ignorance around HIV/AIDS.” Lipa wasn’t the only person who was trying to extinguish the ignorance fire. to read about the HIV misinformation and homophobic statements made at a recent DaBaby show … This fuels stigma and discrimination and is the opposite of what our world needs to fight the AIDS epidemic.” However it does seem like the backlash got to him in some sort of way. He took to Twitter to apologize about his comments saying, “Anybody who done ever been effected by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies. But the LGBT community... I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business.” However, fans didn’t seem to take this as a genuine apology. One fan on Twitter wrote, “these comments from non-LGBT people forgiving him and accepting his apology even tho it’s not theirs to accept is weird.”

SIZZLING SUMMER SAVINGS! Rick Karlin
A
s the temperatures rise and crowds fall, the restaurant industry, already hit hard by the pandemic, struggles to bring in business during the off-season. That’s why there are special dining events up and down the coast, from Miami to Jupiter that might tempt you to try a restaurant that may have been beyond your budget otherwise or to just grab a great deal.
There are some restrictions. Most are offering special prix fixe menus with limited selection, but some places open the deal to the entire menu. Hours and days of availability may be restricted. For all the specials listed, it’s a good idea to check with the restaurant ahead of time, no matter what the promotional website says.
fixe menus are $28 for lunch and brunch and $42 for dinner. While the prices are less than those in Dine Out Fort Lauderdale, they are a slight increase over last year’s (offering of $25 for lunch $39 for dinner), which, of course, doesn’t include tax, tip, and drinks. The price hike is, according to the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau website, “to help offset rising costs of ingredients and operations since the pandemic.” Considering the higher prices of everything now, that’s not much of a pricehike, making it an even better deal. For more information, go to miamiandbeaches.com.
DOWNTOWN DELRAY BEACH RESTAURANT MONTH HAS ALREADY STARTED AND RUNS THROUGH AUG. 31.
DINE OUT LAUDERDALE, runs throughout Broward County until Sept. 30, offering dozens of deeply discounted dinners at the area’s top dining destinations (how’s that for some fancy alliteration?). The annual promotion from local favorites and new spots features prixfixe three-course meals that run $35 for lunch and $45 for dinner (plus tax and tip, of course). Less than 50 restaurants are participating this year, as compared to 70 in 2019, so your choices aren’t as numerous, but are still varied. Among some of the favorites are 3030 Ocean, Aruba Beach Café, Casablanca Café, and Sistrunk Marketplace. For a complete list of participating restaurants go to sunny.org. Lack of participation is not a problem with MIAMI SPICE, running through Sept. 30. There are more than 140 eateries taking part! The Miami Spice format is similar to Fort Lauderdale’s event; three-course prix-

Palm Beach County has no less than three promotions. DOWNTOWN DELRAY BEACH RESTAURANT MONTH has already started and runs through Aug. 31. Expanded from last year’s weeklong event, the dine-out deals range from breakfast offerings starting at $6.50, to lunch and dinner prix fixe menus ranging from $18.95 to $75, and cocktail specials starting at $9. For a list of participating restaurants and the different events they are doing, go to DowntownDelrayBeach.com/ restaurantmonth.

HUNGRY FOR MORE?
In its lucky 13th year, FLAVOR PALM BEACH will include more than 40 restaurants throughout Palm Beach County. Taking place Sept. 1-30 it will feature three-course lunches starting at $23 and dinners from $39-$45. For a list of participating restaurants and menus, go to FlavorPB.com.

A&E APPOINTMENTS Terry Dyer has assembled an all-star cast of local performers for special cabaret performances on Aug. 7 at the Foundry in Wilton Manors. Courtesy photo.
ARTSBEAT ONE NIGHT ONLY J.W. Arnold ALL-STAR CABARET AT THE FOUNDRY The biggest names in South Florida cabaret will perform together on Saturday, Aug. 7 at The Foundry, 2306 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Singer Terry Dyer assembled the all-star cast, including Miss Bouvée, The Boys, Antonio Edwards, Christopher Hamblin, LeNora Jaye and Jennifer McClain, for “An Evening of the American Songbook,” with two performances at 6 and 8:30 p.m. “We’re celebrating friendship, love and community,” said Dyer, who also serves as director of development at SunServe. “It’s a special opportunity for all of these talented people to be on one stage for one evening only and showcase each other’s talents.” Dyer was inspired by the 1986 TV movie “Sisters in the Name of Love,” starring Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick and Gladys Knight as three performers who reunite for a legendary one-night concert. “There’s an immense amount of talent in one show,” he said of both the show and the upcoming Wilton Manors concert. “It’s going to be an unforgettable evening.” Tickets are $50 at Tickets.TerryDyer.org. VIP tickets including an Afterglow meet and greet session with the artists are $75.
MASKS ARE BACK AT THE THEATER If you want to see a show on or Off-Broadway, you’ll need to have gotten a shot recently. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a mandate Aug. 3 requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter performance venues, gyms and restaurants. The news comes just days after the Broadway League announced audience members would be required to get vaccinated before entering any of the 41 Broadway theatres. Florida’s governor and legislature may have passed a law forbidding responsible business owners from requiring “vaccine passports” — even as the deadly COVID-19 Delta variant surges in the state — but local theaters are beginning to resort to the only option available and requiring patrons to wear masks after a three-month respite. Miami Theatre Works, a new semi-professional summer company, announced masks would be required regardless of vaccination status for upcoming performances of “[title of show],” Aug. 6 – 8 and 11 – 12 at Coral Gables Art Cinema. Look for other local theater companies and performing arts venues to do the same as the fall season kicks off in coming weeks. Tickets are $25 at MiamiTheatreWorks.org.
DRAMA ON GRINDR? NO WAY! Grindr’s first original television series – yes, that Grindr – will debut at OutFest LGBT film festival in Los Angeles next weekend. “Bridesman” follows Terry, gay and awful, as he is forced to fulfill bridesmaid duties for his best friend despite his disdain for the construct of marriage and an electric sexual connection with the groom. When Terry threatens to upstage the control-freak maid of honor, secrets are made public, parties are ruined and every relationship is pushed to its breaking point. Learn more at OutFest.org.

COCO
Adorable 2-year-old Coco (ID 643443) would love to make memories with you. She loves to play with toys, and might even play on her own tossing them in the air. Coco gets the zoomies and will run around a bit, but does calm down quickly. She enjoys meeting people, but sadly another dog attacked her, so she tends to be a bit leery around them now - and for good reason. She is only 43 pounds and full grown, so no surprises as to how big she will be. Can Coco be part of your life?
