holiday weekend, many people were outside in the neighborhood and by the time police arrived, hundreds had congregated in the area. Tony said that it is not unusual for the public to be hesitant to come forward during a homicide investigation. He also noted that law enforcement would like to find out if her death was the result of a hate crime. “Like any homicide that occurs in this community, it is our responsibility to investigate these things though,” he said. “However, we can’t lose focus on the fact that in the U.S., the transgender community is targeted and discriminated against and we would like to get to a conclusion to understand whether or not this was a matter
of a hate crime.” Nik Harris, the LGBTQ consumer advocate to Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, spoke at the press conference on behalf of Black’s family and TransInclusive, a local trans rights organization. Harris noted that there have already been at least 25 deaths of trans people in the U.S., compared to 27 for all of 2019 and 25 in 2018. “Bree ‘Nuk’ Black was 27 years young. The average life expectancy of a Black trans woman is 35 years of age,” Harris said. “We are asking anyone with information to please call the Broward Sheriff’s Office with any tips to bring closure to this family, to bring closure to the LGBTQ community. Please call with any tips you have.”

month after the shooting death of Bree Black, a Black transgender woman from Pompano Beach, authorities have increased the reward to $8,000 for information leading to the arrest of her killer. The Florida Sheriffs Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program put forward an additional $5,000 to the original $3,000 offer by Broward Crime Stoppers. The announcement came on the heels of a press conference hosted by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, where Sheriff Gregory Tony said that after a month they have very little information on Black’s death. “This incident took place reportedly where a large volume of people were in the community,” he said. “However, [after] weeks spent on this investigation, we have not received any type of information from the community. No calls, no tips, no support in this particular investigation.” Black was shot and killed close to her home the evening of July 3. Due to the

Every time there is an election, we hear about technology failures and hackers threatening our system. With technology advancing faster than ever, Broward needs a Supervisor of Elections with technology expertise and leadership experience.
Dr. Cunningham and his office are available for your needs during this crisis. Please call or email at OPdental@aol.com
John Lewis said, "we must ensure every vote and every voter counts." Protecting our democracy and dedicated service to the nation is in Joe's DNA. His Grandma Carrie was the first Black woman to vote in Wilcox County, AL. His mom retired from Broward Public Schools, an educator for over 40 years. Joe's dad is a retired Army Sergeant Major and disabled veteran. His wife of 16 years is an Army Veteran and Nurse Anesthetist who serves Broward hospitals in the face of the COVID-19 threat. Joe graduated from West Point and was awarded the Bronze Star as an Army Captain combat leader in Iraq. Joe is running for Supervisor of Elections because he is passionate about defeating the many threats our democracy currently faces. So many have fought and bled for our right to vote and have
inspired him to follow in their footsteps, tirelessly protecting our electoral system from all threats. Joe is also the only candidate with an MBA and 20 years of combined military and technology leadership experience. He has the unique skill set required to effectively build the team and capabilities we need to ensure fair voting for all. Joe recognizes that there is a lot of work to do to build the elections office that Broward deserves. He will focus on keeping our system safe from hackers. Joe will also increase voter turnout in Broward by removing obstacles that make it difficult for our hard-working citizens to participate.
Our next SOE will have to modernize our elections system. It is critical for our Supervisor of Elections to have a background that will prepare him to integrate new systems to make voting easier and more secure. Joe Scott is the Supervisor of Elections you are looking for. Please visit www.ElectJoeScott.com today and enlist as a volunteer and/or make a contribution.

According to its website, the mission of Diversity in Aquatics is to educate, promote, and support swimming and healthy aquatics activities for vulnerable populations. People came out to support that mission and Wright Muir. “We all needed it,” said Thaddeus Gamory, of Diversity in Aquatics. “We needed to do something that did not just put the white woman in her place and angrily tell the police agency and the pool staff about themselves. But in the process, we had to self-empower and selfcare because we couldn’t be done with marching and not necessarily healed ourselves.” That support, coupled with the element of healing, was meaningful to Wright Muir. “I was anxious about going back to that pool just a week after the incident,” she explained. “A part of me honestly didn’t want to ever go back there. But the swim-in created a safe, supportive space for us to return embraced by an entire community. It was such a beautiful feeling to see so many people come out to show their love, concern, and solidarity. The swim-in allowed us to reclaim the water and that space.” The pool was reclaimed from systemic racism and white privilege, according to Gamory. “Implicit bias operates that a black family in a historically black pool in a black neighborhood were told to get out of the pool,” he said. “The police were called in deference to an abusive white woman. The white male staff member quit on the spot after the police showed up. Why did he call the police when you know that that is a traumatic experience for black people, especially a young black man? This is not a police issue.”
Moving forward, Gamory would like to use the restorative justice model to bring all parties to the table, including the offender, who he says is a professor at a local college. “She has an opportunity here,” he explained. “To make amends to the people she offended and what the impact was. She has an opportunity to restore because she’s jacked up right now.” SFGN left messages for the woman but did not hear back. The other part of the restorative justice model involves talking to the police, for the role it played in this instance. “The police feel they didn’t do anything wrong. But they didn’t have enough community consciousness, cultural consciousness, cultural competence to diffuse the situation so that you unnecessarily created something far worse,” Gamory said. “You could have stood for justice and racial equity at this moment instead of being a tool of racism and racial inequity and white privilege. But you didn’t. You just operated as normal. Black people are not given the same equal treatment. We have unfair treatment, unequal treatment, and inequitable treatment when it comes to law enforcement and criminal justice.” Wright Muir agrees. “I would like to see the failures addressed and everyone held accountable,” she said. “I’d also like to see organizations like Diversity in Aquatics get more support so that they can have a broader reach and get more Black people and other people of color in the water and ensure we can all swim and access safe places to swim.”

JOHN LEWIS INSPIRED FORMER PRESIDENTS John McDonald
I
t was some good trouble from Troy, Alabama. Former President Barack Obama, eulogizing the late U.S. Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, acknowledged the gay community’s role in this summer’s protests. “We see it outside our windows in big cities and rural towns, in men and women, young and old, straight Americans and LGBTQ Americans, Blacks who long for equal treatment and Whites who can no longer accept freedom for themselves while witnessing the subjection of their fellow Americans,” Obama said. The 44th President said Lewis’ lesson was to be “better, truer versions of ourselves.” Lewis died on July 17 from pancreatic cancer. He was 80. Equality Florida spokesman Brandon Wolf met Lewis at the site of the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. The meeting between the two activists came not long after the horrific 2016 massacre of 49 people. Wolf wrote about their encounter for Newsweek, revealing “As we made our way back to the car, he grabbed my arm and uttered, ‘we can never stop fighting.’” Lewis was a civil rights leader and disciple of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He assisted in organizing the 1963 March on Washington and was often arrested at demonstrations, hence the references to “good trouble.” Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton joined Obama at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta to remember the feisty Lewis, who served 17 terms in Congress. Bush said hate must be answered with love and hope. Clinton described Lewis as someone who always kept walking to reach the “beloved community.” President Trump did not attend the service. He said Lewis was not a friend. Trump is trailing in most general election polls. Democrats gather in the coming weeks to nominate their candidates. Joe Biden, Obama’s vice president, is the party’s presumptive nominee. Biden is expected to announce his vice presidential selection ahead of the Democratic National Convention hosted by Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Aug. 17-20. The Biden campaign

has committed to choosing a woman for vice president. Democrats have blasted Trump for many things, but the President’s recent attempts to undermine elections have raised constitutional concerns. “With Universal Mail-In Voting [not Absentee Voting, which is good], 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA,” he wrote. “Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???” Trump tweeted. “Trust is foundational to our democratic system,” countered Pete Buttigieg, a gay Democrat from South Bend, Indiana, who campaigned for the party’s presidential nomination. “If even the president is working to undermine it, we, the people, will need more ways to build it up.” Buttigieg said America held an election during the Civil War and will do so again, dismissing Trump’s tweet as a distraction. Buttigieg also shared Lewis’s recent letter to the New York Times. In this writing, Lewis hoped for a soul redemption and that historians would write “it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war.” “America was built by John Lewis,” Obama said in his eulogy. “He as much as anyone brought this country this country a little bit closer to our highest ideals.”

Forty-seven former employees spoke to BuzzFeed about how Glavin led with intimidation and fear on a daily basis. One former employee said when they turned in their notice, Glavin flipped over a table and chair while screaming. Five former employees also said they saw Glavin use a button at his desk to remotely shut his office door “as an intimidation tactic” during reprimands, and that was a “power move more than anything.” According to ex-workers, Glavin used his private shower in his office bathroom, which made them uncomfortable. “You’d be going into his office for an important meeting and the shower door is open and you’re like, that’s a little weird,” a former employee told BuzzFeed. “The shower is right when you walk

Others are expected to be out as well. Co-executive producer Jonathan Norman is the one who is accused of grooming an exemployee by taking him to concerts and other work-related perks, and then attempting to perform oral sex on him one night. Three of the employee’s former colleagues on the show corroborated the incident and said they have discussed it in the years since. “We’re young people who were forming our careers and were unfortunately subjected to a toxic work environment as some of our first jobs out of college,” the ex-employee told BuzzFeed. “And some of us were sexually harassed and that’s what was shaping our careers our first year out of school.” Norman said he is “100% categorically denying these allegations” in a statement to

t’s well-known that Key West’s geography and character is considered unique for residents. Those calling it home know its politics are unique, too – as is first-term mayor, Teri Johnston.
Johnston is running for reelection this year. Florida’s primary election is Aug. 18. With more than 50 percent of the vote, she’ll win outright. If not, the top two vote getters will face off in November. The nonpartisan election has drawn two candidates running against Johnston, who is in the second year of a two-year term. Her opponents are Mark Rossi, a Republican business owner and former city commissioner; and Rick Haskins, a vacation rentals broker and also a Republican. Nonpartisan or not, it’s no secret that Johnston is a Democrat and Key West’s first lesbian mayor. She’s also only the second woman to ever hold the post. EARLY YEARS Johnston, 69, was born and raised far from South Florida — in Conrad, Iowa. She describes the upbringing as “solid middle class.” Her father was an alfalfa plant manager. “He did that for many years until he retired and bought the only bar in Conrad,” Johnston said. Her mother died young at 43. Johnston is the second oldest of three sisters. She said being gay in Conrad wasn’t as suffocating as one might imagine. “For a tiny little town of 900 it was really progressive,” she said, “I don’t know why.”
Even though Johnston dated in college, she said she didn’t really come out until a couple years after graduation. “Although everybody that I hung around with were females,” she said chuckling. “At that point I think I was the last to tell my family; they all knew; it was like, duh.” Johnston said she had a very supportive family who would also embrace her eventual partner, Dar Castillo. Castillo was raising two daughters when they met. The couple now has grandchildren. Johnston earned a degree in physical education and a minor in political science from the former John F. Kennedy College in Wahoo, Nebraska, before moving around and eventually landing in Illinois for almost two decades. “I went [to JFK] because it was one of the first programs [to give] women’s athletics scholarships,” she said. Johnston was a three-time All-American softball player. BUSINESS, POLITICS Like many have before her, she eventually spent a few winters in Key West and would permanently relocate in 2001. Johnston’s a longtime co-owner of a home design and construction company with Castillo. She previously worked for Hollister Inc. — a downtown Chicago-based health
care equipment manufacturer — doing human resources, sales and management. Before running for mayor, Johnston spent eight years on the Key West City Commission — two four-year terms. She’s held several Monroe County board positions (planning, workforce housing) and has done nonprofit work, too. On the left of the political spectrum, she said it was interesting to work with colleagues in Republican-leaning Monroe. “But when you cross the county bridge which comes into Key West, it is very different,” Johnston said. Through the pandemic, Johnston has been in favor of buttoning down to make Key West safe and healthy. She said her opponents have been on the “other side of that coin.” Johnston was a force behind a strong mask ordinance and an early informational checkpoint for motorists coming into Key West. It was set up so that only those doing business in the lower keys would be let through, not day-trippers. “We were putting protective measures in place, getting staff trained and getting [personal protective equipment] to open back up slowly,” she said. Johnston said there was heat from the Republican side of the fence to open back up. Key West did that on June 1. She thinks it was too soon. “We had 41 [COVID-19] cases as of June 1, and two months later it was 540,” she said. “We’d like to get our positivity rate way under 10%.” (At press time it was hovering around 13% to 14%.) While there have been fewer than 10 deaths (as of press time), it’s worth noting that Key West is a city of about 26,000 year-round residents. “It’s not all tourists. It’s also within our community. Most of our spike can trace back to the Fourth of July — we didn’t have fireworks and closed the beaches but people had large picnics and family events. We saw a marked spike,” she said.

environment. But it is changing — the one human family is getting frayed around the edges because of the political environment. We’ve had a couple hate crimes in Key West,” she said. The city, which holds about $11 billion in property values, is also facing issues like sea level rise. But even during the intensely divisive politics of the country and the massive pressures of the pandemic, Johnston is optimistic. “I’ve got three things to focus on: get our community healthy; reboot our economy; and put all of our people back to work,” she said. Johnston said that COVID-19 will transform tourist destinations like Key West. “We’re going to create an economy based on what we’ve been given, but I don’t look at it quite so negatively. We’ve got some smart, creative people here making adjustments. I think we’ll see smaller, more intimate groups and develop areas of Key West that we haven’t been able to. We’ve got incredible things in Key West and we’ll shine a light on those and allow other types of businesses,” she said. At press time, Johnston was preparing to soon take part in Key West’s three- and fiveyear strategic planning sessions. “I ran against 12 people last time,” Johnston said. “I hope I’ve done a good enough job, because this isn’t any time to have a novice.”
THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL THIS TIME AROUND HAS BEEN DIFFERENT, WITH MOSTLY VIRTUAL OUTREACH TO VOTERS.
A LOOK AHEAD The campaign trail this time around has been different, with mostly virtual outreach to voters. And even though in Key West a mayor’s sexuality isn’t a huge focus for the average person, Johnston said being the first lesbian in the position is a nice milestone. “I’m very proud of it. We do have a different Teri Johnston (center) during an unveiling of new public health signage. Photo courtesy of Teri Johnston.

COVID-19 Cases Surges in Wilton Manors in July Jason Parsley
Between May and June there were a total of 52 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Wilton Manors — in July almost double with 103. “Looking back at the last five or six months, we all learned there is a lot we still do not know about the virus, its transmission and the accuracy of reporting. Unfortunately, the numbers have increased substantially over this period,” said Wilton Manors City Commissioner Paul Rolli. “I am hopeful that the pace at which the cases are rising will begin to slow in August, although, I also thought that would have happened a month or so ago.” The total number of cases in Wilton Manors as of Monday according to data obtained from the Florida Department of Health now stands at 248, up from 140 on July 1. That’s about a 75% increase. Oakland Park also saw a dramatic increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 661 in July — far more than 159, the total from May and June. “I am concerned about the impact of the virus on the wellbeing of our population, from a physical and mental health perspective and the effect of the economic impact,” Rolli said. “These conditions are increasing stress and anxiety levels among everyone. With the expiration of the federal and state safety net economic incentive programs, there is also a greater level of anxiety.” At the end of May new weekly cases in Wilton Manors had dropped to just 1. In May there were 30 new cases. In June, 22. The total cases in Wilton Manors come to about 1.9% of the population. Next door in Oakland Park it’s about 2% of the population. For comparison the percentage of positive tests in Florida amounts to 2.3% of the population. As Broward County and the rest of the state has reopened, Florida has set multiple records for the number of daily coronavirus cases in the last 30 days. curfew and new restrictions have been placed on certain businesses. According to FDOH as of Monday, 58,531 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Broward County — that’s more than 3 times the number since July 1. So far 748 have died in the county — 588 since July 1. In Fort Lauderdale there have been 13,129 cases, up from 3,502 on July 1. Next door, Oakland Park is up to 661. There are 491,884 confirmed cases in Florida, more than 4.8 million in the U.S., and globally more than 18.3 million. So far there have been 7,157 deaths in Florida, 158,000 in the U.S. and globally more than 695,000. More than 3,600 Floridians have died since July 1 – that’s more than the number of people who died before July 1. “These are extremely difficult and unprecedented times for everyone and we must continue to work together to help one another,” Rolli said. “Individually, we must take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and others from all perils during this pandemic.” WMG

TWO OF A

ERIC & DANIEL
If you’re looking for two very sweet felines who really want a home and are getting overlooked, we want you to meet Eric, a 2-year-old fellow, and Daniel who is 4. Both these felines are tuxedo kitties, so they are black and white in color. They are social, love to be petted and while they didn’t know each other prior to being at the shelter, the duo have become best buds. They can often be seen cuddling on their cat tree or curled up to together on a comfy chair. The pair tested positive for FIV. What does this mean…Cats who are infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) may not show symptoms until years after the initial infection occurred. Although the virus is slow-acting, a cat’s immune system is weakened once the disease takes hold. This makes the cat susceptible to various secondary infections. Cats with FIV can live 10 - 12 years or they may have a shorter life span. It is best that an FIV positive feline be the only cat in the home, or it could live with another FIV positive cat. These fellows are looking for a loving home where they can be spoiled…can you make their wish come true?

A HARSH LESSON IN THE REALITY OF COVID-19 For Tony Green, the coronavirus pandemic was just a ‘scamdemic’ — until truth hit home hard Tony Green This column originally ran in the Dallas Voice. SFGN is running it with their permission.
I
magine the sound and vibration of an old-fashioned electric heater going through your whole body. Imagine gasping for air with every step you take. Imagine rubbing Icy Hot all over your head to soothe a painful headache. Imagine your eyes in a bowl of water while you’re still seeing through them. Imagine collapsing and waking up in the ER only to find out COVID-19 attacked your central nervous system, and the doctor had just saved you from a stroke. If that were the worst of it, it would be bad enough. But that’s not the worst of it. This is the story of one family’s harrowing fight with COVID-19. Full disclosure: I am a gay conservative, someone that often juggles persecution for my sexuality while being true to my values. Such a combination requires a lot of tenacity to earn respect from either group. I admit I voted for Donald Trump in 2016. I admit traveling deep into the conspiracy trap over COVID-19. All the defiant behavior of Trump’s more radical and rowdy cult followers, I participated in it. I was a hard-ass that stood up for my “God-given rights.” In great haste, I began prognosticating the alphabet soup about this “scamdemic.” I believed the virus to be a hoax. I believed the mainstream media and the Democrats were using it to create panic, crash the economy and destroy Trump’s chances at re-election. And so, believing the pandemic to be a hoax, my partner and I hosted family members on Saturday, June 13. On Sunday, June 14, I woke up sick. By Monday, June 15, my partner and my parents were all sick. That same Monday, my in-laws traveled to witness the birth of their first grandchild. They took with them my father-in-law’s mother and one of my partner’s sisters. That night my father-in-law became ill. Then my mother-in-law and their daughter began feeling sick. So they cut their trip short. Two days later, my father-in-law’s mother got sick. The new mommy and daddy got sick, too. We all tested positive for COVID-19. Only the newborn was spared. My father-in-law and I both went to the hospital on June 24. The virus had attacked my central nervous
system, and the staff stopped me from having a stroke. My father-in-law’s mother was admitted a day later. On July 1, she died of COVID-19/pneumonia. The chaplain wanted the family to break the news to my father-in-law, and he learned how his mother lay on her deathbed and then drifted off without any family by her side, even though he was in the room next to hers. On the day of her funeral, which was July 14, five more of our family members tested positive for the virus. That evening, my father-in-law was put on a ventilator. You cannot imagine the guilt I feel, knowing that I hosted the gathering that led to so much suffering. You cannot imagine my guilt at having been a denier, carelessly shuffling through this pandemic, making fun of those wearing masks and social distancing. You cannot imagine my guilt at knowing that my actions convinced both our families it was safe when it wasn’t. For those who deny the virus exists or who downplay its severity, let me assure you: The coronavirus is very real and extremely contagious. Before you even know you have it, you’ve passed it along to your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. And now, husbands, wives and children are being separated. The sick are taking care of the sick while those without symptoms are selfquarantining. I am aware of how my bias could discredit me with some, but trust me, you do not want this virus. And you do not want your loved ones suffering and dying from this because you are taking a “political stand” or protecting the economy over their lives. We are all at the precipice of a common heartache. The next time you’re put out because your favorite spots are closed or because they won’t let you enter without wearing a mask, and you decide to defy them rather than comply because you’re defending your rights and freedoms from being trampled, just remember: Your family and friends may be next. Is that too harsh? Try imagining someone you care
YOU CANNOT IMAGINE THE GUILT I FEEL, KNOWING THAT I HOSTED THE GATHERING THAT LED TO SO MUCH SUFFERING.

about on life support. Try being the one to pick the only 10 people allowed to attend a funeral for a loved one. But don’t fret; you’ve got time to ponder, because the mortuary is booked out for at least a week. Now imagine one more thing: That pool party, the mixer or family reunion you’re pushing for resulting in you being cold and alone in a hospital bed, fighting for your life. Imagine the only human contact you feel is a stranger’s rubber glove giving you medication, checking your vitals and changing your diaper. That is exactly what has happened to our family. America, this is not going to go away without sacrifice. Either way, we are going to pay a price. Governments are faced with making difficult decisions, and they cannot appease and satisfy everyone. But to do nothing is to be foolish. To ignore or question the validity of this virus, its contagiousness or the consequences of selfish attitudes is — at this stage — completely stupid. I am calling myself out first, but now this is personal, and I fell on my sword. And I promise you, if we continue being more worried about the disruption to our lives than we are about stopping this virus, not one American will be spared. Not one.

WHY TRUMP’S ANTI-TRANS MEASURES WILL PROTECT PREJUDICE IN COVID-19 ERA TRUMP’S REVOKING OF HISTORIC OBAMA-ERA PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER POPULATIONS IS A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF CRUELTY UNDER THE THREAT OF COVID-19 Kay Van Wey
L
ast month, the Trump administration announced a reversal of a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) administrative rule, erasing protections for transgender patients against discrimination by doctors, hospitals, and health insurance companies. Adding insult to injury, the announcement was made during Pride Month and on the fourth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting, which left 49 victims—including many LGBTQ individuals—dead. Anti-LGBTQ Legal Protections Have Been Attempted Since 2016 Under the Obama administration and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, civil rights protections in healthcare were established to ban discrimination based on “gender identity.” Healthcare providers and health insurance companies were thus required by law to provide medically appropriate treatment for transgender patients. Additionally, a series of broad Obama-era regulations had loosened the legal concept of gender, recognizing it primarily as a choice and not determined by the sex at birth. Since 2016, the Trump administration’s war on reversing those regulations and its attack on LGBTQ+ civil rights have been blatant. In December 2016, conservative federal judge Reed O’Connor issued a preliminary injunction against Section 1557, to set in motion the ability to once again discriminate against transgender people, and it was reopened in 2018. This same judge was also responsible for reversing rules regarding access to abortion and birth control. Also in 2018, the Department of Health and
Human Services set forth to adopt an explicit and uniform definition of gender under Title IX, as “either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with,” according to The New York Times. Even at the state level this year, Idaho set forth two anti-trans laws in March, the Department of Justice sought to ban trans girls from high school sports in Connecticut, and criminal penalties for transition care to trans minors were being considered in South Carolina. First proposed in May 2019, Trump’s new law will return to the “government’s interpretation of sex discrimination according to the plain meaning of the word ‘sex’ as male or female and as determined by biology,” according to the HHS press release. Healthcare providers can now turn away anyone they perceive as trans or gay. Hospitals will now be permitted to refuse to respect someone’s gender identity in making room assignments. Insurance companies can now enforce bans on hormone replacement therapy, gender-affirming surgery, and all transition-related medical care. Instilling Fear in Extremely Vulnerable Populations Amid the Threat of COVID-19 These draconian policies and vicious attacks on the LGBTQ+ community have instilled paralyzing fear among transgender patients, particularly because it’s the worst time to have healthcare rights removed. The 1.4 million adults in the U.S. who identify as transgender will now walk into a doctor’s office terrified that they might be treated unfairly, won’t get adequate care, or will be turned away. Or maybe they won’t go at all.
SINCE 2016, THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S WAR ON REVERSING THOSE REGULATIONS AND ITS ATTACK ON LGBTQ+ CIVIL RIGHTS HAVE BEEN BLATANT.

Unfortunately, even if hospitals don’t end up acting prejudiced, the mere fact that discrimination is now legal will absolutely drive reluctancy in the trans community to seek care or get tested for COVID-19. This is dangerous, considering that transgender populations are at an especially increased risk to contracting COVID-19 due to a variety of factors. In a recent report from UCLA, data from the U.S. Transgender Population Health Survey was used to identify characteristics that may increase vulnerability to COVID-19 for transgender adults. What the report found was quite sobering:
319,800 transgender adults are immunocompromised and have one or more of the following conditions: asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or HIV 217,000 transgender adults are 65 or older 450,400 transgender adults could not go to the doctor last year because they could not afford it 137,600 transgender adults do not have health insurance 667,100 transgender adults live below 200 percent of the poverty line
CONVICTIONS It’s literally a matter of life and death. Under this new legislation, and given deeprooted prejudices that they already face, it’s not far-fetched to say that transgender populations could even be pushed farther down the list for COVID-19 treatment or ventilators. It’s a terrifying ordeal this law has caused. Trans patients are at the mercy of a medical professional’s personal beliefs. UNDOING HISTORIC CIVIL RIGHTS RULINGS MADE UNDER THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION In addition, there is the lingering fear that all the progress the Obama administration made toward transgender rights in healthcare will be completely reversed. Prior to historic reforms in 2015 following the landmark legislation that would allow same-sex couples to marry, the prospects of getting quality healthcare as a transgender adult were slim to none. One of the more renowned cases of a trans male who was denied care was Robert Eads, who died in 1999 when a doctor refused to treat him for ovarian cancer (he recommended Eads see a therapist instead). Then, in 2010, health data was released on the largest-ever study of transgender and gender non-conforming people in the United States. The survey found: Nearly 1 in 5 (19 percent) reported being refused care outright because they were transgender or gender non-conforming. 28 percent of respondents postponed necessary medical care when sick or injured due to discrimination and disrespect. 28 percent of respondents were subjected to harassment in medical settings. 50 percent of the sample reported having to teach their medical providers about transgender care. Over 25 percent of respondents reported misusing drugs or alcohol to cope with the discrimination they faced due to their gender identity or expression. 41 percent of respondents reported attempting suicide, compared to 1.6 percent of the general population.
Guest Column Then, the Obama administration slowly but surely worked toward making several changes to ensure these statistics would not continue, including: July 2010: The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that trans individuals can file housing discrimination lawsuits and that they would now be covered under the Fair Housing Act’s ban on gender discrimination. August 2012: The Department of Health and Human Services announced it would interpret discrimination on the basis of transgender status as a form of sex discrimination. April 2014: The Department of Education announced that transgender students were protected under Title IX’s prohibition of sex discrimination. April 2017: The Department of Justice and the Department of Education informed all U.S. school districts that transgender students should be allowed to use bathrooms consistent with their gender identity, rather than the gender they were assigned at birth. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) called Barack Obama the “best president for transgender rights, and nobody else is in second place,” in an interview for CBS News. WHAT CAN BE DONE MOVING FORWARD? As soon as the law was released, the Human Rights Campaign announced intentions to sue the Trump administration. Even within an hour, LGBT activist group Lambda Legal said it will absolutely challenge this law in court. Other organizations like the Harvard Center for Health Law, the National Women’s Law Center, and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund are teaming up to fight against the ruling. House Democrats have vehemently expressed their opposition, and according to the Congressional Review Act, it is possible to overturn the ruling as long as it falls within the 60-day legislative deadline. What is absolutely certain? This ruling will not go down without a fight.

LIFESTYLE FOOD
PANDEMIC POUNDS Swap out some of your unhealthy treats for these homemade goodies Rick Karlin
H
as the pandemic helped you pack on a few pounds? If so, you’re not alone. According to Nabisco, cookie sales have gone up 30% in the past few months. Our kitchens have turned into giant vending machines, dispensing treats as we tend to graze through the day, often eating out of boredom.
“In-home, there is more grazing, more continuous eating, and snacking takes up a much bigger role,” says Dirk Van de Put, the chief executive of Mondelēz International (formerly Kraft Foods). Not only that, even though we’re cooking at home instead of wholesome foods we’re re-creating our favorite fast food treats. That combined with lack of, or restricted, access to gyms and workout classes is a recipe for weight gain. There’s a real danger that when this pandemic is over, we still won’t be able to leave the house because we won’t be able to fit through the door. All right, so I’m exaggerating there, but it still wouldn’t hurt to have some healthy snacks around. Some things are easy; it doesn’t take a degree in nutrition to know that an apple is better for you than Flaming Hot Cheetos. So, keep some fresh fruit on hand the next time you get a sweet craving. I’m particularly fond of watermelon, pineapple and plums. You can still have potato chips and cookies occasionally, just not on a daily basis. Grapes are great for the feeling of filling (and emptying) a bowl of goodies, and they’re healthier than M&Ms. Try some of these recipes the next time you have a craving. Most of them don’t take much time at all to prepare, but that doesn’t really matter, we’ve all got plenty of time now.
ROASTED CHICKPEAS
These are great when you’ve got a craving for something salty and crunchy. INGREDIENTS 1 (15-oz.) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. cumin 1 tsp. chili powder 1/2 tsp. cayenne (optional) 1/2 tsp. dried oregano DIRECTIONS Blot rinsed and drained chickpeas on a paper towel to absorb any residual moisture. Spread chickpeas on a baking sheet in an even layer. Place chickpeas in a pre-heated 350º oven until completely dry, 10-12 minutes. Remove chickpeas from oven and toss with oil and seasonings. Return to oven, and bake until golden brown and crispy, about 35 minutes, stirring halfway through. Remove from oven and let cool on baking sheet.
FETA DIP
Serve with cucumber slices, carrot sticks, red pepper slices and any other veggie you like. INGREDIENTS 1 lb. feta 1 cup Greek yogurt 1 oz. (8-oz.) block light cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Juice and zest of 1 lemon Kosher salt crushed red pepper flakes 1/2 cup chopped cucumber DIRECTIONS In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat feta cheese, Greek yogurt, cream cheese, oil, and lemon juice and zest until fluffy and combined. Season with salt and red pepper flakes to taste. Stir in chopped cucumber. Transfer dip to a serving bowl, drizzle with a little extra olive oil.
FAUX-TATO CHIPS
Bet you can’t eat just one! INGREDIENTS 1 large daikon radish (may substitute 1 dozen large red radishes) 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. garlic powder Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 225°. Using a mandolin, thinly slice radish and place in a large bowl. Add vegetable oil and garlic powder and season with salt and pepper, toss to coat. Spread in an even layer on large baking sheets. Be sure none of the radishes are overlapping.
Bake until chips are crisp and slightly golden, (about 1-1 1/4 hours). Let cool five minutes before serving. Can also be cooked in small batches in an air-fryer set at 350°. Cook for six-seven minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until chips are golden and crispy.

PISTACHIO OAT SQUARES
It’s like granola and a cookie all in one! INGREDIENTS 1 cup raw shelled pistachios 1 cup rolled oats 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 cup honey, more for drizzling on top 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes (optional) melted dark chocolate (optional) additional handful of chopped pistachios for the topping DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350º and line an 8-inch square pan with parchment paper. In a food processor with the metal blade attached, process the

pistachios, oats, and salt for about 30 seconds, until a meal starts to form. Drizzle in the honey and olive oil while the motor is still running, and the meal begins to come together into a crumbly, almostwet dough. Press the dough evenly into the pan (top with coconut if desired) and bake for 10-12 minutes. You want the squares to still be a little soft — don’t overbake them. Carefully lift the cooled dough out of the pan by holding two sides of the parchment paper. Cut it into squares. Drizzle a little honey over the top for extra sweetness, if you like. Drizzle with melted dark chocolate and extra pistachios. Can be stored in a sealed container for up to a week.

rts organizations have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic with theaters and performing arts venues largely shuttered until a vaccine can be developed. In an effort to help local LGBT arts organizations survive the prolonged shutdown and emerge stronger, Wilton Manors-based Our Fund Foundation recently formed a coalition to share resources, coordinate messaging and marketing and leverage the good will and financial support of their patrons. “We have agencies in our network that work with HIV/AIDS, seniors, youth, but it has been the arts organizations that have been wrestling most with what the new normal will be,” explained David Jobin, president and CEO of Our Fund. “If we value these organizations, how can we protect them until the time they are able to open their doors again?” Jobin noted in a phone interview that South Florida boasts diverse, world-class organizations across all the arts disciplines. Members of the coalition include the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, Island City Stage, Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, OUTshine Film Festival, South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, Thinking Cap Theatre and Thou Art Woman. Because many of these organizations share audiences, Jobin engaged Our Fund’s marketing and public relations consultants to work with the coalition members and coordinate their efforts. “Rather than stepping on each other’s toes, we want to make sure their efforts are moving the whole cultural community forward, helping them communicate with stakeholders on fundraising, and putting a plan in place to be here a year from now,” he said. “Organizations such as our play an integral role in the LGBTQ community by providing safe spaces for enjoyment, connection and reflection,” said Mark Kent, executive director of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. “We are still here, albeit virtually, to serve and entertain our community and want to assure our loyal patrons that we are doing everything in our power to survive and thrive when we re-emerge.”
The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble is one of the LGBT arts organizations working with Our Fund Foundation to address the challenges created by the pandemic. Credit: South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble.
Nicole Stodard, artistic director of Thinking Cap Theatre, added, “In spite of all kinds of adversity, theater as an art form has endured for 3,000 years because it nurtures our need for shared experiences and feeds our love of active storytelling. We need theater now, more than ever, both in the midst and in the aftermath of the pandemic, to lift us up and unite us, and when theaters reopen, South Florida’s actors, playwrights and backstage artists will have the creative cure our community so needs.” Victor Gimenez, executive director of OUTshine Film Festival, said virtual performances and productions many organizations are relying on now can’t substitute for shared, live experiences. “There’s nothing quite like attending a longawaited movie premiere or an independent screening with like-minded film enthusiasts … This inherently changes when watching from home alone. We can’t wait to resume film festivals which tell so many powerful stories the LGBTQ community relates to and has come to rely on.” Jobin is optimistic about the initiative: “This is part of why Our Fund is so important — bringing agencies and stakeholders to the table and working together in a beneficial manner” to advance South Florida’s vibrant and diverse LGBT community during this challenging time.

A&E THEATER
MIAMI’S ZOETIC, RONNIE LARSEN BIG WINNERS AT THEATER AWARDS J.W. Arnold
Z
oetic Stage, the regional theater company in residence at the Arsht Center in Miami, made history on Monday night, snagging 12 Carbonell Awards for achievement in South Florida theater. The company’s production of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd” nearly swept the musicals categories: Stuart Meltzer, best director; Jeni Hacker, best actress; Aloysius Gigl, best actor; Terry Hardcastle, best supporting actor; and Paul Tine, best musical director. Zoetic also captured technical awards for both play and musical categories: Rebecca Montero, best lighting, and Marina Pareja, best costumes. Meltzer picked up a second trophy for directing Zoetic’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” also the best play; Matt Corey, best sound design for “Every Brilliant Thing;” and best ensemble cast for “The Wolves.” Like Meltzer, Hacker was a double winner winning best actress for a play for portraying the Mormon mother of a gay son who explores her son’s sexuality by creating a Grindr account. “Grindr Mom,” from prolific local gay playwright Ronnie Larsen, was also named best new work, edging out his own “An Intimate Evening with John Wayne Gacy.” Larsen has already successfully reopened the Foundry at Wilton Theater Factory in Wilton Manors, touting enhanced safety and social distancing measures. Broward County was also represented by the relatively new New City Players, a company that will be in residence at Fort Lauderdale’s ArtServe when their live performances resume. Timothy Mark Davis took best actor in a play as a young man coping with autism in “Falling,” and Rita Cole was the best supporting actress for “A Raisin in the Sun.” Palm Beach Dramaworks in West Palm Beach came into the evening with a whopping 29 nominations, but only won three: Amy Miller Brennan, best supporting actress in a musical, “The Spitfire Grill;” Anne Mundell, best scenic design, “A Streetcar Named Desire;” and David Kwiat, best supporting actor in a play, “Ordinary People.” The company was also the winner of the Bill Von

Maurer Award, presented by the Carbonell board of directors. The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton, known for big productions of musicals, landed the best choreography Carbonell for Justin M. Lewis, “Hot Shoe Shuffle.” In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards ceremony, referred to in the community as “theater prom,” was streamed live on YouTube. Producers Fantel Music pivoted earlier this year, opening with a stunning prerecorded video featuring dozens of local performers and creatives expressing what theater means to them as most venues remain shuttered. The “In Memoriam” segment saluted Broadway composer Jerry Herman and GableStage producing artistic director Joe Adler among the local luminaries who passed away this year, and three talented local high school graduates awarded scholarships presented impressive acceptance speeches.
