TWO FEDERAL CASE WINS FOR TRANS RIGHTS John McDonald
T
ransgender rights activists won two cases last week in Florida and Idaho. At issue were restroom access and birth certificates. “Today, the court sent a clear message that schools must treat transgender students with the same dignity and respect as any other student,” said Tara Borelli, Counsel at Lambda Legal, in a press release Aug. 7. “The trial court was correct when it ruled that the law requires that Drew Adams be treated like every other boy and be allowed to use the boys’ restroom. We are glad the court saw the school board’s policy as unjust and discriminatory, and affirmed the inherent dignity of transgender students.” Adams attended Nease High School in the Jacksonville suburbs. He used the boys’ restroom until an anonymous complaint prompted school officials to force him to use only gender-neutral restrooms. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta ruled the St. John’s County School Board discriminated against

Brad Little’s attempt to prevent Idahoans from changing gender markers on their birth certificates. It was the Republicanled Idaho legislature’s second attempt to ban birth certificate changes since 2017. “When you treat the federal court like a doormat, there are going to be consequences,” said Nora Huppert, a Renberg Fellow and attorney with Lambda Legal, in a press release. “The rule of law comes to a grinding halt if government officials can act as if they are above the law that the rest of us are expected to follow.”

Every time there is an election, we hear about technology failures and hackers threatening our system. With technology advancing faster than ever, Broward needs a Supervisor of Elections with technology expertise and leadership experience.
Dr. Cunningham and his office are available for your needs during this crisis. Please call or email at OPdental@aol.com
John Lewis said, "we must ensure every vote and every voter counts." Protecting our democracy and dedicated service to the nation is in Joe's DNA. His Grandma Carrie was the first Black woman to vote in Wilcox County, AL. His mom retired from Broward Public Schools, an educator for over 40 years. Joe's dad is a retired Army Sergeant Major and disabled veteran. His wife of 16 years is an Army Veteran and Nurse Anesthetist who serves Broward hospitals in the face of the COVID-19 threat. Joe graduated from West Point and was awarded the Bronze Star as an Army Captain combat leader in Iraq. Joe is running for Supervisor of Elections because he is passionate about defeating the many threats our democracy currently faces. So many have fought and bled for our right to vote and have
inspired him to follow in their footsteps, tirelessly protecting our electoral system from all threats. Joe is also the only candidate with an MBA and 20 years of combined military and technology leadership experience. He has the unique skill set required to effectively build the team and capabilities we need to ensure fair voting for all. Joe recognizes that there is a lot of work to do to build the elections office that Broward deserves. He will focus on keeping our system safe from hackers. Joe will also increase voter turnout in Broward by removing obstacles that make it difficult for our hard-working citizens to participate.
Our next SOE will have to modernize our elections system. It is critical for our Supervisor of Elections to have a background that will prepare him to integrate new systems to make voting easier and more secure. Joe Scott is the Supervisor of Elections you are looking for. Please visit www.ElectJoeScott.com today and enlist as a volunteer and/or make a contribution.

AT LEAST 25 TRANS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
MURDERED THIS YEAR Kim Swan
W
hile crime rates, generally speaking, have fallen during the shutdowns across the U.S. due to the coronavirus pandemic, that doesn’t appear to be the case for trans people who have been murdered so far this year. Thus far at least 25 trans or gender non-conforming individuals are known to have been murdered in 2020, according to The Human Rights Campaign. Last year, they tracked at least 27 in the U.S. Below are six of the more recent murders. TIFFANY HARRIS, 32
Tiffany Harris’ mother described her as “a wonderful, loving person” who was “loved by everyone,” in an interview with The New York Daily News. On July 26, her daughter was stabbed multiple times in the chest in an apartment building in New York City, according to The Daily News. “I can’t imagine people being so brutal,” Harris’ stepfather said in the interview. Harris’ parents repeatedly deadnamed their daughter in interviews with local media saying things like “He’d like to put on makeup and appear feminine,” according to reporting from the Daily News. They refused to acknowledge their daughter’s gender identity, instead referring to her with male pronouns and saying she was “just gay.” The mother added Harris sometimes dressed feminine. “He didn’t hurt anyone. I don’t know why he was there. I don’t know who he was with. I didn’t know much about his lifestyle.” The police released a surveillance image of the suspect and are asking the public’s help identifying him and tracking him down, as reported by the Daily News.

QUEASHA HARDY, 24 Queasha Hardy was a talented hairstylist who operated a popular salon that people loved to visit. She was shot to death July 27 in Baton, Louisiana, according to The Advocate. She died on the street. The Advocate detailed how dozens of Hardy’s friends posted on her Facebook page expressing pain and disbelief that someone so full of life and personality could be taken so soon. “God hears our cries. … It’s been raining since you left,” one person wrote, according to The Advocate. “Just to have you in our presence was enough. You didn’t deserve it.” The Baton Rouge Police Department deadnamed her in their releases to the public because the victim’s next of kin requested Hardy

be identified as male, The Advocate reported. However, The Advocate said multiple friends and advocacy groups contacted them saying she was a trans woman. Police have yet to identify a suspect, according to them. DOMINIQUE “REM’MIE” FELLS, 27 Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells “was truly one of a kind,” Fells’ family wrote on a GoFundMe page that was used to raise funeral costs. “Our family is in mourning and in utter disbelief that something like this could happen to one of our own,” her family also wrote. Her body was found June 8, floating in the Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia, according to NBC10.
She died of multiple stab wounds, according to People Magazine. Her legs had been cut off, and bruising was found on her face and head. The Office of LGBT Affairs in Philadelphia called the killing trans People of Color an epidemic in a statement, according to NBC10. “We are reminded with this, and countless other painful losses — especially within our transgender communities — that there is much left to do until we achieve full equality, respect, and support for us all. The murder of transgender people — especially those of color — is truly an epidemic, and a crisis that we cannot afford to allow to persist any further,” the statement read in part. A police spokesperson said detectives were actively investigating the killing, as reported by NBC10.

Riah Milton’s mother described her daughter as “outgoing, helpful and someone who always put her family first.” “She just wanted to be accepted for who she was,” she said to MSN. Her daughter was shot and killed during a robbery in Liberty Township, Ohio June 9, according to MSN. She was a Black trans woman. Two of the suspects are facing charges such as murder, aggravated robbery, complicity and tampering with evidence. The third suspect has yet to be found, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

BRIAN POWERS, 43 Brian Powers was a spiritual person according to his sister Vivian Powers-Smith. He often talked about how “He knew God loved him,” Powers-Smith said to the Akron Beacon Journal. “I always told him ‘God made you and he knew what he was doing when he made you. ... You are who you are supposed to be.’” Powers was a Black trans man who died by a single gunshot wound in Akron, Ohio, according to the Beacon Journal. 19News reported that he was murdered June 13 close to the Chapel Church near the University of Akron campus. An Akron police spokesperson said that detectives are at an - Nyella Love impasse because there are no FRIEND OF TATIANA HALL suspects, and have very little SPEAKING TO BUZZFEED NEWS information to go on.

However, the police spokesperson said the department is devoting ample resources to the case, the Beacon Journal reported. Family and friends are continuing to search for clues. TATIANA HALL, 22
Friends and family members said that Tatiana Hall was a devout fashionista who dreamed of opening her own boutique or clothing line someday, according to BuzzFeed. Mariah Hope, a close relative said Hall was like a sister to her, affectionately calling her a “diva.” “She loved to dress,” Hope said to BuzzFeed. “She loved to keep her hair and her nails done. She had the prettiest smile, and she just liked to have fun.” “...I’ve been feeling sick because I feel her,” Nyella Love, a friend, told BuzzFeed. “I feel her in the way of something else. I know she was hurt, and I know she was scared when she was taken from us. I feel it. I see it. She didn’t deserve it. She didn’t deserve nothing of it.” Very little information has been reported on the Black trans woman’s death. The Philadelphia Police Department has not officially ruled her death as a homicide, according to them. The police claim Hall had drugs in her system, suggesting that her death was from an overdose, but family and friends told BuzzFeed News that Hall did not do drugs, as reported by them. They believe that she was killed by a man she was seeing, and police are reportedly following up on leads.

lorida Representative Shevrin Jones is having a tough go of it lately. Jones, campaigning to become Florida’s first Black gay Senator, was turned away from donating blood. Making matters worse, Jones has been the target of negative text messages linking to a fraudulent website. “My opponents have sent out a discriminatory and hateful text message to voters,” Jones tweeted Aug. 9. “This type of bigotry should have no place in our community. For the past eight years, I have worked towards a path to equality and prosperity for all of us.” The Aug. 18 Democratic primary election will determine the district’s next senator. Jones, 36, is one of seven candidates for the District 35 seat. He has declined to identify who is behind the text attacks. “I ask that you ignore this kind of trash,” Jones tweeted. Having recovered from COVID-19, Jones sought to donate plasma last Friday in
Hollywood only to be barred due to his sexual orientation. OneBlood, the blood donation center, cited a U.S. Food & Drug Administration policy that defers donations by men who have sex with men. In April, the FDA announced it was shortening the deferral period for gay and bisexual men from 12 months to three months. “Saving a life shouldn’t be prevented because of who you love,” Jones tweeted. “The @US_FDA should look at this antiquated policy and do away with it.” Jones added he would like to work with Florida’s U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott to end the gay blood ban.

FLORIDA GETS $10.6 MILLION IN HIV FUNDING

even Florida Counties were awarded grant money by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as part of its Ending the HIV Epidemic plan. The Florida Counties — Broward, Duval, Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach and Pinellas — will receive $10.6 million in federal funding. Overall, the CDC awarded $109 million to 57 areas prioritized in the plan. According to data from 2018, Miami-Dade had the most people (26,015) living with diagnosed HIV, followed by Broward (19,249) and Orange (8,514). Pinellas County had the highest percentage of people who have achieved viral suppression (70.6), followed by Hillsborough (69.1) and Broward (68.2). communities in DeKalb County, Ga., East Baton Rouge, Parish, La. and Baltimore. In these communities, state and local health departments hired more health care workers, trained registered nurses, expanded testing and provided same day care linkage and access to PrEP. “We will not end the HIV epidemic without the voices and participation of the communities most severely affected by HIV,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, in a press release on July 31. “Scientific advancements are powerful, but we won’t end this epidemic unless we commit to addressing the health disparities clearly evident with the HIV epidemic. This funding will assist communities as they address the long-standing gaps in equitable access to advancements in HIV and bring us closer to the finish line.”

ith the coronavirus pandemic raising concerns about how people can safely vote in 2020, Florida voters are breaking records for voting by mail.
The first big test is the Aug. 18 Democratic and Republican primaries and nonpartisan elections open to all voters. In South Florida, the number of people voting by mail two weeks before Election Day had already exceeded the number of mail ballots cast during all of mail voting in August 2016 and 2018. The supervisors of elections who run voting in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties say voting by mail is safe, secure and reliable. registered to vote. “Reforms that have either been required by the courts or brought on by the Legislature ... have cut down on the number of signature mismatches enormously,” Antonacci said. “It’s yesterday’s problem.” In the March presidential primary, Link said, 0.2% of Palm Beach County ballots weren’t counted because of missing or mismatched signatures. Use black ink. If a voter uses another color, the ballot has to go to the Elections Canvassing Board for review, said Steve Vancore, spokesman for Antonacci. On Aug. 11, canvassing board members were reviewing a ballot from a voter who used a purple marker that bled though the page. WAYS TO VERIFY It’s possible to check the status of a mail ballot. Elections office staffers can answer by phone, but it’s fast and easy to check online through county elections office websites. In Broward, click “check your voter status” on the elections office website. In Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, click “vote by mail” and then “track your vote by mail” ballot. TIME FOR A FIX There’s another reason to get your ballot back as early as possible, Antonacci and Link said. If
someone makes a critical mistake — forgetting to sign the ballot or signing with a signature that doesn’t match what’s on file — election workers will try to get in touch with the voter by letter, phone, text and email. (That’s why the ballot return envelopes ask for the optional phone and email contact information.) Voters have until 5 p.m. on the Thursday after the election. which is Aug. 20 for the primaries and nonpartisan elections, to cure the problem. PEOPLE WITH MAIL BALLOTS CAN VOTE IN PERSON If a voter receives a mail ballot and wants to vote in person at an early voting site or a neighborhood polling place on primary day, that’s allowed. Early voting runs through Aug. 16 and neighborhood polling places are open on Aug. 18. CAN’T VOTE TWICE Antonacci, Link and White said voters can’t game the system by voting by mail and then heading to an early voting site or neighborhood polling place on Election Day. They said the voter rolls are constantly updated. Once a mail ballot is processed, a person won’t be able to cast a ballot in person. Or if someone’s voted at an early voting site or

GETTING A MAIL BALLOT To avoid the chaos that surrounded the 2018 midterm election in Florida, state law was changed, and it’s too late to ask for a ballot to be mailed for the Aug. 18 election. People who don’t want to vote early or in person on election day can pick up ballots at the Supervisor of Elections office. FILLING OUT THE BALLOT CORRECTLY Mark the ballot exactly the way the instructions specify and avoid making stray marks. Otherwise, it might not scan correctly and might not get counted the way you want. In Palm Beach County, people who haven’t voted since 2018 will find a different ballot style. It’s now like other counties, and voters fill in an oval to cast a vote. Also: • If someone votes for more than one candidate in a race (unless it’s a contest in which people are supposed to pick more than one candidate) the vote won’t count. People are allowed to skip a race.
election in 2000. Any registered Florida voter may now vote by mail — a system Trump used during the March presidential primary. AUGUST ELECTIONS
• Missing secrecy sleeve. If someone forgets to put their ballot in the secrecy sleeve before sealing the ballot return envelope, it’s OK. The vote will still be counted, Antonacci and Link said.
In the August voting, registered Democrats and Republicans will pick nominees to represent their parties in November elections for Congress, state Legislature and County Commission. Florida is a closed primary state, which means only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote in their respective primaries. Some primaries are tantamount to election because the November opposition stands little chance of winning. There are also contests that are open to all voters, such as judge and school board. (A school board or judicial candidate who gets more than 50% of the vote in August wins. Otherwise, there’s a November runoff.) Some primaries — such as the contest for circuit court clerk in Broward or supervisor of elections in Palm Beach County — are open to all voters because only Democrats are running. Because there’s no other candidate in November, the winner will get the four-year term in the job.
ABSENTEE VOTING
INFORMATION
• Turn it over. For most voters, there are races on both sides of ballot pages. • Keep them separate. If more than one mail ballot comes to a household, they should be kept separate, the League of Women Voters of Broward County warns. Unique bar codes are on each envelope and if two spouses sign each other’s envelopes that causes problems. • Stuck envelope problem. Some Broward voters reported their ballots arrived with the return envelopes stuck shut because of humidity. They can be opened and taped shut to return. The most important thing is the signature.
President Donald Trump has sought to differentiate between mail voting and absentee voting. There is no difference in Florida. In fact, state law no longer has any such thing as absentee voting. Absentee voting used to require an excuse, such as being out of town on Election Day. It was greatly expanded and transformed into mail voting as part of the reforms following the George W. Bush-Al Gore presidential

NEWS ELECTION
VOTE NEXT WEEK A Statement from Publisher Norm Kent Norm Kent Photo via Adobe.
It’s so important for you to vote next week. Broward County’s legal system is in for a shakeup. So is our country. Do your part in reshaping the future. Help build our destiny. Lay the foundations by casting a ballot. For the first time in forty-four years, we will be electing a new state attorney. Your choices for a host of offices include women, reformers, first time candidates and established leaders; a host of jurists, seniors, along with formidable challengers. There is a sprinkling of multi national ethnicities and many persons of color, along with LGBTQ voices. It’s as diverse a group as have ever run. Bring your voice to the table. These are challenging times calling for courageous choices. Broward is looking to elect a new sheriff, public defender, and possibly a new clerk for our courts, along with a new elections supervisor. Our choices are many, from the able and competent to those not as much so. While our newspaper is not suited to individualize endorsements, we present you with a list of friends who have. Consider them thoughtfully. Make your decisions righteously. All I can ask of you today is to be mindful of Ben Franklin’s memorable words years ago in Philadelphia. Coming out of the Constitutional Convention which would help form our nation, he was asked by a fellow countryman what kind of government we had created. He modestly replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” My feelings, as you can see from my editorial today, is that our republic is in fact in jeopardy. Next Tuesday, do your part in preserving it. Vote. Good Luck.

AFTER DECADES OF CONCEALING HIS TRUE SELF, THIS 90-YEAR-OLD GRANDFATHER
CAME OUT AS GAY DURING THE PANDEMIC Alicia Lee CNN
S
tuck at home during the pandemic with not much to do, Kenneth Felts began to write a memoir, chronicling the past 90 years of his life.
But as Felts wrote, he quickly came to realize that his story would never be complete without revealing a secret he had kept hidden his entire life: His true sexuality. Felts, who now lives in Arvada, Colorado, told CNN that he’s known he was gay since he was 12 years old. But he said he made the choice to conceal his sexuality, because he grew up during a time when homosexuality was both frowned upon and illegal. Much has changed over the last few decades, including the Supreme Court’s monumental decision in 2015 to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. Felts said his memoir couldn’t go on without writing about his one true love, Phillip. So at age 90, he finally came out to his daughter and then to the rest of his friends and family through a Facebook post. “I am gay, I am out, and I am free,” Felts said he wrote in his post.
I had not anticipated opening up,” Felts said. “He’s the one that threw me out and made me realize that we had potential together.” Dates started out at coffee shops, but soon, Felts was spending more time at Jones’ apartment than his own, and eventually moved in. For over a year, they lived as a happy, albeit secret, gay couple. “When I was living with Phillip in California, homosexuality itself was illegal,” Felts said. “It was a felony, we couldn’t hold hands or anything like that. You would be arrested on exhibition of such behavior. Once you go to court, your information is spread all around town and you lose your friends, your family.” California’s sodomy law wasn’t repealed until 1975. Ultimately, the burden of being gay in a society where it was considered a crime became too much for Felts, and he decided to break it off with Jones. “I resigned my job, packed up A SECRET HE WAS PLANNING my stuff and went back home,” TO TAKE TO THE GRAVE Felts said. “Phillip wrote me two or three letters after that. In the A sleepover with a classmate last letter, he said, ‘If you don’t - Kenneth Felts GAY VETERAN helped Felts come to the respond to this letter, I won’t revelation that he was gay, bother you anymore.’” he said. But he was taught in his devout “I didn’t respond as I hadn’t responded to Christian family that homosexuality was a any of his letters,” he recalled. “Big mistake.” sin. After Felts left Jones, he once again hid his “I just knew that if I were to come out as sexuality. But this time, he created an alter gay, I would probably go to hell,” Felts told ego named “Larry” to create a more defined CNN. “I was going to the grave with [my separation between his two lives. secret].” “Larry was my gay side and I, Ken, was the So throughout his young adult years, normal, straight person,” Felts said. including his deployment to Korea with the Keeping Larry hidden, Felts met a woman U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and his at his church’s youth group. telephone books in search of one name. “I called every Phillip J in there and was never able to locate him,” Felts said. “I will die always regretting having left Phillip but hopefully he forgave me.” COMING OUT AT THE AGE OF 90 Growing up, Rebecca Mayes, now 48, knew that her father had some regrets in life. She had always thought that they were related to her mother, but she finally learned in May during the pandemic the source of her father’s pain. “We were on the phone and he told me that he missed out on the one true love of his life,” Mayes told CNN. “He didn’t say male or female.” Later that day, Felts revealed to Mayes in an email that his one true love was indeed Phillip Jones, a man. Mayes said she was surprised to hear that her father was gay, considering the fact that he reacted to her coming out as lesbian 25 years ago in dismay. “He told me the relationship wouldn’t last,” Mayes remembered. But she said her father quickly came around and became her and her now-wife’s biggest supporter. “I think he had the same fears for me that he had himself about what a tough life it could be, everything from not being able to
have children to societal issues,” said Mayes, who now has two children. After coming out to his daughter, Felts soon revealed his truth to the rest of the world in a Facebook post that was met with overwhelming support and love, he said. He even shared the story about Phillip Jones in hopes that someone could help find him. A woman in New Jersey who helps find the biological parents of adopted children reached out to Felts to help find his long lost love. But unfortunately, what she brought was sad news. Jones had died in 2013. “I loved him till the end and I’m doing this all for him,” Felts said. Now, as a proud gay man, Felts said Larry has taken over. He has blue and pink streaks in his hair. He’s wearing the rainbow pride flag and he even participated in this year’s Denver Pride Virtual 5K on his walker. But most importantly, Mayes said her father is more outgoing and confident than ever. “I don’t see how I could not be happy for the rest of my life,” Felts said. It might have taken him 90 years to come out as gay, but he said he hopes his story will give others the courage to embrace their sexuality as well. “There’s a whole world out there that will accept you and love you for who you are,” he said.

WEST PALM BEACH OFFICIALS HAVE ALWAYS LED THE WAY IN TERMS OF LGBT RIGHTS IN THE COUNTY AND STATE. THEIR LATEST LGBT RIGHTS INITIATIVE: STRENGTHENING THEIR EQUAL OPPORTUNITY ORDINANCE . At the West Palm Beach City Commission meeting July 27, commissioners amended the city’s Equal Opportunity Ordinance to extend protection from discrimination to employees who work for small businesses. The employees will be protected from discrimination based on race, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, and more. The amendment takes effect following a final vote Aug. 10. Before, only employees who worked in businesses with 15 or more people were protected from discrimination. But now the number is between five and 14. “Tonight, in a unified show of support,

West Palm Beach City Commissioners took another step to protect women and minorities from discrimination in employment,” said PBCHRC President and Founder Rand Hoch in a press release. “West Palm Beach has been at the forefront of protecting workers from discrimination for decades.” The request to broaden the ordinance came from PBCHRC. Over the past three decades, the organization has been responsible for implementing more than 140 laws and policies to provide equal protections, rights and benefits for the LGBT community.

Sprouts Farmers Market to Replace Proposed Walmart in Oakland Park By Christiana Lilly A Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store could soon be on its way to Oakland Park Boulevard, as well as residential and green space. The first reading of the ordinance proposal for the former Kmart lot at Oakland Park Boulevard and Sixth Avenue was approved unanimously by the commission present. Commissioner Sara Guevrekian was not there to vote. “I am really, really pleased and very excited not only about the project but also that it incorporates the possibilities of the future, the entire Middle River being a public space, it’s great,” Oakland Park Vice Mayor Jane Bolin said during the meeting. The Kmart closed in 2014 and the lot was purchased by Walmart. However, that plan was dropped when the company butted heads with the city. Ram Realty Services applied to purchase the 10 grossacre property as mixed-use land, which was unanimously approved by the city’s Planning and Zoning Board in July. The company presented its plans to the commission Aug. 5 to include a Sprouts grocery store, retail space, apartments, multi-family townhomes, a BBQ area for
residents, dog park, walking path with tree canopy, a boardwalk along the Middle River mangroves, shared-ride service loading area, and a dine-in restaurant. Oakland Park Mayor Matthew Sparks told the Wilton Manors Gazette he was pleased with the updated plans, which included recommendations by the commission such as not having a drive-thru restaurant. “I’m glad that it’s out of the hands of Walmart and now in the hands of Ram [Realty Services],” said Spark, who said he has never been a fan of Walmart. “They’re turning this from a basic big box store with a parking lot to a lot of greenery.” As for traffic, Robert Lochrie of Lochrie & Chakas noted during the meeting that there would be a reduction of 1,000 trips per day compared to a Walmart being on the site. “We’re not only putting less traffic on the roadways, we’re improving the function of the roadways,” he said during the meeting. Spouts is an Arizona-based grocery store that offers an array of natural, organic, and gluten-free foods. Sparks said that hopefully this will fill the void

that was left in the community when Lucky’s Market closed in February. Aldi, another grocery store, will be moving into that vacant space. “I already signed up for their shopping app,” Sparks said of Sprouts, which also has
a new location in Deerfield Beach. “This is the best possible scenario that could have ever happened and now that they have conditional use, it’s basically a done deal. They can now purchase the property.” WMG

Oakland Park Unveils New Designs for Fire Stations, Community Center By Christiana Lilly Rendering Credit for North Andrews Gardens Community Center: Courtesy of Currie Sowards Aguila Architects.
Oakland Park is getting a new look, with the city presenting designs for its new public works facility, two fire stations, and community center. The projects are a part of the city’s Comprehensive Facilities Plan, which is funded by a $40 million general obligation bond approved by voters in 2018. “We have to get our firefighters into decent fire stations,” Oakland Park Mayor Matthew Sparks told the Wilton Manors Gazette. “All of our community centers are … beyond their expected use.” The unveiled designs were new buildings for Fire Stations 9 and 20, the North Andrews Gardens Community Center, and the Public Works Facility, which will include an emergency operations center and a two-story parking garage. There are also plans to build a new library to replace the Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library, relocating City Hall to Oakland Park Square, and also renovating Fire Station 87. The library and community center will be built in what will be known as City Park. The green space will include a playground and splash pad, a butterfly garden, exercise area,

basketball and pickleball courts, and more. The design of the new buildings is being handled by Zyscovich Architects in Miami and the structures will follow the same design scheme, keeping the city buildings cohesive. Sparks said the commission wanted to be fiscally responsible while also keeping the
character of Oakland Park. “We’re trying to get every dime out of this $40 million bond that we can possible,” he said. And it’s that bond that is making the projects possible during the country’s economic recession, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a press release from the city, Oakland Park City Manager David Hebert estimated that the projects will create more than 3,000 jobs locally. “Our new buildings will be models of urban civic spaces that are sustainable, reliable, safe, and beautiful,” Hebert said. “While we remain in challenging times, future construction of these buildings offer several opportunities including lower interest rates and costs for building materials, and the creation of more than 3,000 local jobs created by private development projects planned in Oakland Park.” The project is a part of the city’s 10-year redevelopment plan, which is expected to be complete in 2029. This will coincide with the city’s 100th anniversary. “I won’t be seated then, but I certainly will be out there cheering it on,” Sparks said. “We continue to strive to make sure that our 100th birthday is something to truly be celebrated, with the completion of all these buildings.” WMG

WilMa Real Estate: What’s New?
REAL ESTATE
By James Oaksun Until recently, I thought it might be considered to be in bad taste to report or even comment on real estate here in South Florida, given the other realities with which people have been faced. However, since we may have to adapt to a “new normal” – at least in the short run – I thought you might be interested in what’s been happening with the numbers here in Our Fair City. The business of buying and selling homes goes on, after all. This article will concentrate on pricing trends – the dollars and cents of it. In a future column I will discuss sales counts and the all important “inventory” metric. Take a look at Chart One, where I have shown the changes in overall Island City pricing going back to the first quarter of 2013. The solid blue line is the 50th percentile or median – half the sales were above that price level, and half below. In addition, I am showing dashed lines for the core range of pricing – called in statistics the “intraquartile range” – with the green dashed line the 75th percentile and the red dashed line the 25th percentile.
THE BUSINESS OF BUYING AND SELLING HOMES GOES ON, AFTER ALL.
The constant upward trend in valuation is readily apparent. In the first quarter of 2013 the median sale price of a single family home in Wilton Manors was $309,000. In the second quarter of 2020 – the quarter ended on this past June 30th – the median sale price had increased to $523,000. In other words, the median price increased by 69 percent over that seven-year period. That’s 7.5 percent per year on a compound annual basis. Now let’s consider Chart Two, which shows the median prices for the three main Wilton neighborhoods – West (meaning west of Andrews), Center (Andrews to the train tracks), and East (east of the train tracks). Here we can see that pricing in East Wilton consistently tracks above the other two neighborhoods by roughly $100,000. Something to note here is the rather sharp drop in East Wilton pricing in the last year, particularly in the last six months. This is worthy of further investigation. What does this mean for the typical Wilton homeowner? Well, suppose you bought the typical house in Center Wilton in early 2013, and sold it this year. If you put 10 percent down and took a 30-year mortgage, after paying closing costs and real estate commissions you would have made an eye-popping 527 percent on your capital invested – about 30 percent per year, compounded. You can make a lot of money in real estate – IF you buy at the right time and prices go up. James Oaksun, Florida’s Real Estate Geek(SM), is Broker-Owner of New Realty Concepts in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to having degrees from Dartmouth and Cornell, he is a Graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI).

THE DIVIDED STATES OF PANDEMICA America the invincible must overthrow a dictator

T
he cartoon Pogo said it best: “We have met the enemy, and he is us.” The United States of America, the strongest nation on Earth, has been exposed, stripped naked to the bone. For all our power, all our might, in the face of a pandemic, we can’t do anything right. With 5% of the world’s population, we own 25% of the globe’s coronavirus cases, and 95% of its problems. In the face of science and research warning us that this is a frighteningly transmissible and deadly disease, we fight in shopping malls over whether it is prudent to wear a mask. How stupid is this debate? Does a sneeze guard not protect a buffet tray in a restaurant? Does a condom not protect you from HIV? Do galoshes not protect your feet in the rain and snow? Do helmets not protect you on a motorcycle? Do seatbelts not save us from suffering broken spleens in car crashes? For all our science, hospitals, research centers, and medical facilities, we have learned that we were not fully prepared for a crisis of catastrophic proportions. Now the truth is all the umbrellas in the world will not protect you from a tsunami, but at least if you see it coming, we ought to get the hell away from the ocean. Not America, though. Not Americans. We think we are invincible. We are a nation of bikers, pioneers, mountain lions roaring at the top of the hill. Nothing can beat us. Don’t care how strong the hurricane coming our way is. There will always be someone grabbing a surfboard as rough waves hit the shore. Is it surprising there are anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers in America? Hell, no. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. Open the bars. Go to school. Play football. Rally for Trump or bike to Sturgis. Nothing can happen to us. Only to others. It
cannot happen here. But it has. We are ever so vain. We are such fools on a hill. Blinded by the light we are. With Donald Trump at the helm, our ship of state is led by a small man whose huge ego and unsteady incompetence has made things incredibly worse. A pandemic in our country was going to kill many to be sure. But an epidemic of ineptitude in the Oval Office has instead killed so many more. Instead of making us realize we had to do better, he played to the myth that we were the best who could never be beaten. No real athlete ever so underestimated his adversary as much as Donald Trump miscalculated COVID-19. He may not understand this, but he wears a mask every day to hide who he really is. Don’t ever expect Donald Trump to take responsibility. In his kingdom, somebody else always takes the blame, even if he must bribe them to do it. He grew up as a little rich kid with followers fawning over his celebrity. Sadly, millions still do. That’s all he cares about —ratings and reverence. Donald Trump has taken the presidency of the United States and converted it into a pulpit for racially incendiary rhetoric that fosters nationalistic isolationism. He has made us into world outcasts. He has turned an America once hailed as the leader of the free world into its greatest danger. Our world no longer views China, Russia, North Korea or Iran as the planet’s most dangerous threat. They view Donald Trump’s America, the Divided States of Pandemica, as its greatest fear. Why shouldn’t they? Increasingly, they have a good reason to be so frightened. Our president swore to uphold the constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights but he brings a shredder to it every

day, ignoring the rule of law, the right to dissent and the independence of a free press. He read each as closely as the Bible, another good book he never grasped. Let me be blunt. Donald Trump and his government need to be overthrown. Fortunately, there is an election on November 3. We still have a chance to do it peacefully on that day. If we fail, expect civil unrest to follow. It will be warranted. It may be the only way to save our country from a tyrant. Donald Trump has polluted and poisoned a democracy that was already challenged. He will not let the reins of power go gracefully. He will continue his brutal assault on your right until the very last day he leaves office. While hospitals count the dead every day, he goes golfing every weekend. Let them eat cake. Folks, he is already trying to sabotage and undermine the election with specious lawsuits and false claims about mail in voting, which he uses himself. He is already trying to instill fear into the American psyche about a
rigged election instead of promising how he can ensure its integrity. Meanwhile, there are hot summer nights still ahead of us. We should be marching to preserve our freedom today and bring an end to the pandemic tomorrow. But this is America, and you may miss the suppression of democracy, because kickoff for the NFL is at noon. A pandemic? Don’t worry, it went away — magically disappeared. And Tom Brady is making his debut in Tampa Bay. I get it. We all want football. But COVID-19 couldn’t care less who wins the Super Bowl, so give me the latitude to be Donald Trump in reverse. If you ever want to go to a Broadway show or watch football again, and you don’t want this pandemic to claim a million American lives, vote to overthrow the dictator in the White House November 3, even if you must stand naked and unmasked outside in a storm. Vote. Win Florida and we will win the White House.

OUTSHINE FILM FESTIVAL GOES
VIRTUAL DURING PANDEMIC J.W. Arnold
xe. Px
W
hile most movie theaters remain shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic, OUTshine Film Festival organizers have turned to the internet to showcase the best in new LGBT-themed features, shorts and documentaries. More than 80 films will be available via internet streaming beginning Aug. 20. Like past festivals, films will have an official screening date and time, but then remain available for purchase and viewing through Aug. 30. According to executive director Victor Gimenez, the pivot to on demand streaming has come with challenges, including new ticketing and screening platforms and the necessity for enhanced technical support due to the 24/7 availability. But, he’s also optimistic the new format will allow new audiences to explore LGBT films. “Even though we’re based in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, anyone in Florida can watch the films. There’s no travel, parking, concessions costs, just the ticket price,” he pointed out. “The systems are all new to us and we’ve worked hard to make it as easy as humanly possible.” Going virtual also has advantages, he added. Previously, tight budgets limited the number of filmmakers, actors, directors and writers the festival could bring to South Florida for talkback sessions following the screenings. The availability of Zoom and teleconferencing services will allow talent from around the globe to speak about their projects and the recordings will be available on the festival’s YouTube channel long after the festival ends. “I wouldn’t be surprised if when we go back to a physical festival that we don’t offer some sort of virtual component,” he said, acknowledging the pandemic has already changed how film fans consume content. OUTshine hasn’t gone completely virtual, though. The opening night film, “Stage Mother,” will also be shown on Thursday, Aug. 20 at the drive-in theater at Dezerland Park in North Miami, offering fans a socially distanced, retro movie experience. “There really wasn’t a model for this kind of festival,” Gimeniz said, but his board and volunteers are eager to take these steps to ensure that LGBT film survives and thrives in this challenging era.

HERE ARE SFGN’S MINI-REVIEWS OF EIGHT FILMS FROM THE OUTSHINE 2020 LINEUP: “STAGE MOTHER” Thursday, Aug. 20, 7 p.m. U.S./English/94 mins. When a conservative Texas church-choir director inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club, she surprises her closedminded husband – and everyone else she knows – by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. SFGN: “Stage Mother” is predictable, even cliched – sort of a mash-up of “Sordid Lives” with “Sister Act” – but it’s also the perfect feel good story we’re all craving right now, especially LGBT people who may have been raised in conservative, religious families. “DOUZE POINTS” Saturday, Aug. 22, 7 p.m. Israel/French, Hebrew with English subtitles/90 mins. An out and proud Muslim gay singer is on his way to represent France in Eurovision, Europe’s biggest song contest, until he becomes a Mossad target when ISIS plants an operative acting as his boyfriend into the French delegation. SFGN: This film is just silly – no, downright campy – but offers the perfect escape from pandemic fatigue, even if you’re still watching from your living room. For those diehard Eurovision fans, we’re sorry, but please remember this is satire.
The OUTshine Film Festival runs Aug. 20 – 30 and films can be screened from anywhere in Florida. Tickets for most individual films are $12 each with discounted packages available. For tickets and more information, go to OUTshineFilm.com. 30

A&E ENTERTAINMENT “DEFIANT SOULS” (“INSUMISAS”) Sunday, Aug. 23, 7 p.m. Cuba, Switzerland/Spanish with English subtitles/94 mins.
Elect
This feature is based on the true story of a woman who, disguised as a man, became the first female surgeon in Latin America. A drama of epic proportions unfolds around one of the most scandalous cases in Cuban colonial history. SFGN: This is a fascinating tale from history and who doesn’t love a period drama? While the film isn’t quite convincing, it would have been quite a feat to pull off this gender-bending charade nearly 200 years ago.
Elect
“THE SOUND OF IDENTITY” Monday, Aug. 24, 7 p.m. U.S./English/89 mins. This documentary chronicles a historical moment: a talented transgender woman’s U.S. debut with a professional opera company as the title character in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” And, it happened in the reddest of red states in Tulsa, Oklahoma. SFGN: Lucia Ludwig is a pioneer and an inspiration to all. She is so incredibly comfortable leveraging her trans identity to advance her career, despite the obvious challenges and risks that presents. Highly recommended. “THE CAPOTE TAPES” Wednesday, Aug. 26, 9:15 p.m. U.K./English/91 mins. Through newly discovered audio archives and interviews with Truman Capote’s friends and enemies, this intimate documentary explores the rise and fall of America’s most iconic gay writer and dwells strongly on his final uncompleted novel. SFGN: While this film does little to further illuminate Capote’s illustrious career and infamous personal life, he remains one of the most fascinating figures in LGBT history and the well-made documentary is equally compelling. “THE ACROBAT” (“L’ACROBATE”) Friday, Aug. 28, 9:15 p.m. Canada/French, Russian with English subtitles/134 mins. Montreal is snowed under and, while downtown construction cranes dance a hypnotic ballet, two strangers meet randomly in an unfinished apartment. Their chance encounter leads to a violent attraction and a dependency beyond reason. SFGN: Filmmaker Rodrique Jean is clearly mesmerized by the snow and construction cranes, but when the story finally starts moving, it’s intense with graphic sex scenes. Short attention span? Skip the two-hour film and head to PornHub.

“NOWHERE” Saturday, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. Colombia/English, Spanish with English subtitles/87 mins. Young immigrants Adrian and Sebastian live an openly gay life in New York City. When Sebastian’s visa application is rejected, the couple must decide whether to return to Colombia – where they face rejection and violence – or fight to remain in the U.S. SFGN: Even though the LGBT community has celebrated so many victories recently, this film effectively focuses on the plight of immigrants – especially Latinx people – who are trapped in our dysfunctional immigration system. No spoilers here… “T11 INCOMPLETE” Sunday, Aug. 30, 5 p.m. U.S./English/105 mins. Kate Murphy lost everything when she hit rock bottom. Now, 10 years sober, middle-aged and struggling to rebuild her broken life as a visiting home health aide, Kate marches quietly through her uneventful days until she is assigned a young, beautiful paraplegic patient. SFGN: This is one of the most powerful, understated films of the festival, addressing issues of redemption, aging and disability (featuring several cast members successfully living with their disabilities). In case you were wondering, the title is a reference to the spinal cord injury.
