popular downtown city park will likely be renamed in honor of the late Mayor Justin Flippen, pending a Sept. 22 public hearing. Flippen, 41, died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm on Feb. 25 en route to a City Commission meeting. Under the proposal, Jaycee Park at Wilton Drive and Northeast 21st Court would be renamed “Justin Flippen Park” in the late mayor’s memory. The burly, ever-smiling mayor was a big presence on the Commission and his absence has left a noticeable gap. “The one thing that was so great about Justin is he just made everyone feel like you were one of his very best friends. He did this for large numbers of people,” said Acting Mayor Tom Green, his voice cracking with emotion. “He did love our city very much and loved parks very much.” Commissioners voiced unanimous support for the renaming but didn’t agree about when it should take place. Commissioner Gary Resnick wants the city to delay the renaming until Flippen’s birthday on May 6 so the issue doesn’t become politicized before the Nov. 3 election. In Wilton Manors, the mayor’s seat and two commission seats are up for grabs. Resnick also believes the city could more easily hold a dedication and

celebration at the park in May in light of the ongoing pandemic. Green and Vice Mayor Julie Carson disagreed that the renaming might become politicized. “I think it is absolutely not a political issue. If you want to poll everyone who is running for office, I think everyone is in support of it,” Carson said. “I am stunned that Commissioner Resnick would say that we need to wait to do it.” Residents sent in more than a dozen emails supporting the renaming, with a few exceptions. One resident called it “fitting.” Another called it “appropriate” and “truly splendid.” “We definitely feel Jaycee Park ought to be renamed in honor of and in remembrance of our deceased and much loved Mayor Justin Flippen,” wrote Roger Wilson and Maurice McDonald in an email. “He loved our city and hosted many festive holiday events at the park that should be renamed after him.” But not everyone was so enthusiastic.

Aimee Ballantyne, CEO of Friends In Stitches Recovery, sent a scathing email to the city saying she would “emphatically vote against this proposal.” “He led the city in a purely gay-centric direction, not spending enough time on the nuts and bolts issues which would have made our city cleaner, safer, more grounded in reality and better prepared for the future,” Ballantyne wrote. The park was named after the Jaycees in the 1950s because the organization took over maintenance of the park at the time. The name stuck long after the organization had relinquished its park maintenance duties, said City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson. Stephanie A. Flippen-Chandler, Flippen’s mother, said the park renaming would honor her son’s life of service. “I believe this will further and positively memorialize Justin, his work and his memory which are all rooted in strong public service to the City of Wilton Manors,” his mother wrote in an email.

ndrew Gillum revealed he is bisexual. Gillum, the former Tallahassee Mayor, CNN analyst and Florida Governor runner-up, gave an interview to talk show host Tamron Hall, in which he said he drew a distinction in his sexual orientation. “The answer is I don’t identify as gay but I do identify as bisexual,” Gillum said. “And that is something that I have never shared publicly before.” Gillum and his wife, R. Jai, took part in Hall’s interview, which aired Monday on MSNBC. R. Jai told Tamron bisexuality is too often misunderstood. “Bisexuality is just something different,” she said. “I just believe that love and sexuality exist on a spectrum. All I care about is what’s between us and what agreement we make.” Gillum recently took to his Instagram account to tell followers he was “suffering in silence.” “I was perfecting what it meant to wear the mask,” Gillum said. In March, Miami Beach police found Gillum in a hotel room in an “inebriated state.” Emergency workers had been called to treat another man suffering from a suspected drug overdose. Gillum was in town for a wedding. Gillum lost the Governor election by a mere 32,000 votes to Republican candidate Ron DeSantis. He went on to form a voter

BIDEN BACKERS BILK CONSERVATIVE HOTSPOT Christiana Lilly

I

t’s Saturday morning at the corner of US-1 and Oakland Park, and there are flags waving, cars honking and signs thrust into the air. At first glance, it seems the tea party has returned to its spot at Coral Ridge Mall — but drive up closer to the crowd, and the corner has taken a 180-degree turn.

It’s a rally for Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris. “[I’m] thinking of my children, of wanting someone that can speak truth, that can speak coherently and create full sentences,” laughed Leonard Heal-Rodriguez, the founder of the rally. “All it takes is one action, and how amazing it is that not only have we taken that one corner, we’ve taken all four corners.” A month ago, the escrow accountant for a law firm decided he had enough of hearing his Democrat friends complaining on Facebook about the state of the country. He made a post that he would be at the corner to show support for the Biden-Harris ticket and invited whoever else wanted to join. “I just thought if two people show up, that’s wonderful,” he said. “I had all intentions of being out there with a couple of my friends and that’s how it started.” More than two people showed up the first Saturday. By the third Saturday, the crowd had grown to 62 participants. Heal-Rodriguez purchased 15 more flags and had more posters printed for the influx. The group is now expanding to other corners at Coral Ridge and will be adding a caravan to drive to the beach and back. This isn’t the first time the LGBT community

has taken over the corner. In 2016, after the Pulse shooting, a local gay lawyer started weekly Love Always Wins rallies that drew hundreds of attendees. Stephanie Steinberg found out about the rally on Facebook and joined. Now, she has her own rallies scheduled in Deerfield Beach on Sunday mornings from 9:30 - 11 a.m. “We get honking constantly, waving, thumbs up the whole time,” she said. “It’s very rewarding as a Biden-Harris supporter to see other BidenHarris supporters interacting with each other, even if they’re just driving by.” Steinberg retired after being an advocate for banning indoor smoking in Colorado. When she moved to Florida three years ago, she was shocked by the political culture — she remembers seeing the Confederate flags flying in North Florida, the road rage in South Florida, and the seeming lack of interest by the people around her to recycle properly or be eco-conscious. “We need to be here,” she said. “We have to be in places where no one is speaking up, where people are being silenced, and you have to be out in public and let people at least hear you, that you’re present in your life.” Both Steinberg and Heal-Rodriguez plan to keep up their rallies every weekend until the election, weather permitting. Heal-Rodriguez

is also adding voter awareness to his mission, as the Coral Ridge Mall is a popular early voting location. He’ll be spreading the word about early voting and mail-in ballots as alternatives to in-person voting on Election Day, for those who are interested. “We can’t continue this for another four years. This has united us and this is what

our country is about, was about, and will continue to be about once we elect Biden into presidency,” Heal-Rodriguez said. While John Ramos, a co-organizer of the event, added: “The bottom line is by doing these rallies we’re hoping to increase the enthusiasm level, increase voter turnout, and motivate people.”

The Fort Lauderdale rally is Saturdays from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at the corner of US-1 and Oakland Park Boulevard. Visit TRUTH OVER LIES - Biden Harris 2020 on Facebook for more information. The Deerfield Beach rally is Sundays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. by the CVS at 2 S. Federal Highway. Visit Patriots for Biden by the Beach on Facebook for more information. 9.17. 20 20 •

WEST PALM BEACH CITY COMMISSIONERS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED A RESOLUTION TO CREATE PALM BEACH COUNTY’S FIRST LGBT PRIDE RAINBOW CROSSWALK. The crosswalk will be located in Northwood Village at the intersection of Northwood Road and Spruce Avenue. The pavers will be painted with the six colors of the rainbow flag: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, according to the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. The resolution was introduced by City Commissioner Kelly Shoaf at the request of PBCHRC’s President Rand Hoch. Shoaf’s district includes Northwood Village. In August 2018, Wendy Morse, who then served as the Manager of the Office of Public Engagement, informed the city’s Art in Public Places committee that crosswalks throughout the city that needed to be refurbished could use some artwork, according to PBCHRC. Hoch, an AiPP member at the time, immediately requested a rainbow crosswalk. “Several cities have installed crosswalks painted with the colors in the rainbow flag to recognize their LGBTQ residents,” Hoch told the AiPP members, according to the press release. “Let’s make it happen here.” U.S. cities with rainbow crosswalks include Albuquerque, Atlanta, Gainesville, Key West, Miami, Minneapolis, Missoula, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San

Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, West Hollywood, and Washington, D.C. Following the AiPP meeting, PBCHRC reached out to the LGBT community via Facebook seeking recommendations for the best location for the crosswalk. Matt Chambers and Will Davis, local business leaders who were the first gay couple in West Palm Beach to be married at City Hall, suggested the intersection of Northwood Road and Spruce Avenue. “When installed we can turn this into a great community event,” said Chambers in 2018, according to PBCHRC. Hoch contacted Shoaf last month asking if the City would hold “a socially-distanced ceremony” following completion of the project. To date, no decision has been made concerning a dedication ceremony. Although the former Mayor of West Palm Beach Jeri Muoio agreed the location was ideal, it took until this summer for city staff to initially approve the crosswalk project. While the city selected Shamus Paving of Deerfield Beach to manage the project, Trinity Striping will do the pavement marking. The project will cost less than $4,000. Installation is expected to be completed within 40 days, according to PBCHRC. Future upkeep is expected to run approximately $5,000 every five years. The costs will not be paid by the taxpayers, as maintenance is to come out of AiPP provided by developers, according to the press release.

ADAM LAMBERT TALKS POLITICS WITH PETE BUTTIGIEG ON INSTAGRAM John McDonald

R

ock singer Adam Lambert interviewed former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg on his Instagram channel on Thursday. It was a 30-minute Q&A segment between the 38-year-old gay men. Both have fully endorsed the Biden/Harris presidential campaign. “This is your moment of maximum power,” Buttigieg told Lambert’s audience. With the general election rapidly approaching, Buttigieg said he is having conversations with Republicans ready to jump ship and others considering if voting even matters. If every LGBT and pro-equality voter votes it would be “an unstoppable force,” Buttigieg said. “We get to decide how 2020 ends,” Buttigieg said. “I think 2020 could actually go down in history as the beginning of a different kind of decade. That the 2020s would be remembered as the decade when, frankly, America got its shit together and started moving forward.” Lambert gained fame through “American Idol” and went on to sell millions of albums and songs with a theatrical style often dubbed “Glambert.” He said the realities of dealing with a pandemic have been intense and the world has experienced a consciousness shift. “Being humble enough to wear that mask when you go outside to protect the community,” Lambert said. “[COVID-19] has been a reveal of the fact that we might have some selfishness to deal with.” In 2018, Lambert took to the stage in London with legendary rock band Queen for a performance of “The Show Must Go On.”

The performance is part of a concert album, Live Around The World, scheduled for an Oct. 2 release. “We can’t wait to get back to work,” said Lambert, expressing a desire he said from many unemployed artists.

SOUTH FLORIDA LGBT ORGS DETERMINED TO HAVE BIG IMPACT IN ELECTION ‘In a state where [...] a race was called by 10,000 votes, [...] 566,000 pro-equality voters can change everything’ Steve Rothaus

Special to South Florida Gay News

I

n the final weeks of Campaign 2020, South Florida’s largest LGBT political groups are pushing hard to make sure gay voters and their allies are registered, and know how to cast their ballots. “Vote like your life depends upon it,” said Nik Harris, vice president of the Dolphin Democrats political club. Harris, who is also LGBT consumer advocate for Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, said it’s essential that equality voters do not sit out this election. “A ‘no’ vote is a vote. That’s the truth. Right now we’re talking about peoples’ lives.” Most major LGBT political groups — with the exception of Log Cabin Republicans in Washington, D.C. — maintain that four more years of a Donald Trump presidency would jeopardize the many political gains won by gay people this past decade. “Once again, Trump is trying to distract from his failure to lead, this time by advertising a list of individuals he hopes to appoint to the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Human Rights Campaign (HRC)President Alphonso Davidon Sept. 10, a day after the president presented his list of 20 conservative potential justices, including Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. “And, if the past is prologue, [Trump] may once again nominate people who would deny legal protections for LGBTQ people, take away the health care provided by the Affordable Care Act, undermine the fundamental right to vote, erode core civil rights laws, and fail to value the lives, needs and Constitutional rights of the LGBTQ community,” said David, whose Washington-based group is the nation’s largest gay-rights organization. “We must not let this happen, and it starts by denying Trump a second term.” Locally, both partisan and nonpartisan rights groups say they are working hard to ensure a high turnout this election by LGBTQ voters and their allies. “It’s important not to assume that people are registered to vote. And even if they’re registered, how do we get them out?” said Harris, who recently helped 10 members of a single Broward family become voters. It began when a Haitian-American worker at Harris’s Fort Lauderdale apartment building overheard a conversation about voter registration. “She said, ‘I’ve always wanted to know how to vote, but I was too embarrassed [to ask],’” Harris recalled. Soon after, the woman’s husband, mother, father and other relatives were registered. “They’re all going to be

‘SCHITT’S CREEK,’ ‘KILLING EVE’ TOP LGBTQ CRITICS’ AWARDS J.W. Arnold

ALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, announced their picks for top television series, movies and performers during a virtual, livestreamed event on Sunday, Sept. 13. Hosted by talk radio personality Charles Karel Bouley on Revry, the LGBT streaming service, the two-hour event recognized unique contributions in mainstream TV and featured a slate of A-list Hollywood stars, including Hugh Jackman, Regina King, Laverne Cox, John Oliver, Janelle Monáe and Billy Porter. “The presenters and winners really outdid themselves with their virtual appearances,” said GALECA Executive Director John Griffiths. “And our host Karel did an amazing job, especially considering he was flying virtually. He’s such a genuine, enthusiastic fan, and that makes an awards show much more fun. He also gets how much power TV has in transforming and uplifting lives. That makes the viewing experience more meaningful.” Referring to the new era of social distancing, Karel said, “There are people in the Trump administration that’ve gone to jail and gotten out sooner than we have from our lock-up!” “Killing Eve” (BBC America) and “Schitt’s Creek” (Pop) were named best TV drama and comedy, respectively, while best LGBT TV show also went to Dan Levy’s sitcom, which won numerous accolades during the evening, including the Wilde Wit award, honoring a performer whose observations “both challenge and amuse,” and best actor. Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy also earned awards for best actress and supporting actress. Thanking GALECA’s 250 members (including SFGN’s Arts & Entertainment Editor J.W. Arnold), Levy said, “It is a great honor to be recognized by all of you, because, let’s be honest, you got good taste.” HBO’s alternate universe fantasy series “Watchmen” was awarded best limited series and most visually striking show. Accepting the awards, creator Damon Lindelof said, “I know the Dorians celebrate all kinds of film and TV shows that don’t necessarily need to be LGBTQ-themed, but we take particular pride in the fact that there is a queer character at the very center of ‘Watchmen.’” Lindelhof continued, “We started this story

by asking a simple question, ‘Why would a superhero need to hide their face?’ If they were truly fighting for justice, the answer seemed obvious: Because the world wasn’t ready to see who they really were. And so ‘Watchmen’ became this story about unmasking, about understanding the pain and trauma caused by ignorance and hate.” Hugh Jackman won best TV performance for his role in HBO’s “Bad Education” as real-life figure Frank Tassone, a school superintendent who was imprisoned for embezzling over $11 million in 2004. Campiest TV show went to “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” the Netflix docuseries that became a social media sensation in the early weeks of the pandemic shutdown. The series tells the true story of zoo owner and controversial personality Joe Exotic, who was embroiled in a murder-forhire plot and subsequently imprisoned. Director/producer Rebecca Chaiklin told viewers Joe Exotic (Joseph Allen MaldonadoPassage) — who is gay and recently sent a letter to Donald Trump asking to be pardoned for charges of murder for hire and animal abuse — sent his gratitude. Rounding out the Dorian winners were “What We Do in the Shadows” (FX), best unsung TV show, and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (HBO), best current affairs program.

LIFESTYLE TWO GUYS AND A DOG

LISTENING TO THE STORIES OF OTHERS Brian McNaught

E

veryone has a story that helps explain, not excuse, why they think the way they do. Taking the time to listen to another’s tale is a gift to them. Having them take the time to tell us the what and wherefore of their lives is a gift to us. If we take the time to listen, we will never be the same. If they take the time to tell us, nor will they be. I love hearing people’s stories, particularly when their lives have been, and are very different from my own. I always learn something important when I ask, “What was it like growing up for you?” The stories that are told are oftentimes sad. The person with whom I’m talking sometimes had to deal with unimaginable challenges. They had polio, or some other debilitating childhood disease. Their father took his life when they were young. Their mother was mentally ill, and mistreated them. They were sexually abused. They were poor and went to bed hungry. Some stories speak of privileges unimagined by me, such as grandmothers who took them as children to Europe, of going to private schools with the children of movie stars and old world HAVING A nobility, and of having horses, private MOTHER WHO planes, and chefs. Some people fear that telling their story IS MENTALLY makes them vulnerable to those who Photo via PxHere. ILL DOESN’T would seek to dismiss them. The opposite is true. In my experience, telling your MEAN THAT YOU story liberates and empowers you. You ARE UNLOVED, home, and Ray became a much loved son-in-law. the enemy. But, as understandable as it is that we do it out of increase the odds of feeling understood. ANY MORE It seems to me that hearing that I was loved by fear, it is foolishness that says far more about us than it does Other people fear that listening to a story, my family connected me to those in the audience about them especially from someone more privileged, THAN GOING for whom family was important. It made me less I’ve done it my whole life. I’ve done it to feel stronger, will diminish them in the eyes of the other, TO PRIVATE foreign, and perhaps envied by those who didn’t dominant, unafraid. People were “homophobes.” They were make them feel “less than,” or unfairly experience love and acceptance despite them “Right Wing, Fundamentalist fanatics,” or, “Conservative treated by life. SCHOOLS MAKES being straight. Republicans.” Quite the contrary, story-telling can be YOU FEEL LOVED. Many people over the years have told me how The same was done to me. I was dismissed as a “coward” the equalizer, for when all of the hard luck impactful it was for them to hear my story, how it for being a conscientious objector, and “an avowed and good luck elements are told and out helped them understand what it was like growing homosexual” for coming out as gay. In the gay community, of the way, you eventually get to the most up with a secret I didn’t understand, and was afraid to tell I was dismissed by some as “an assimilationist” for being basic criteria for happiness, “Did you feel loved?” Catholic. Just as the labels used with me foolishly missed the Having a mother who is mentally ill doesn’t mean that you anyone. From my perspective, being invited to tell my story over and basics of who I am, my labels of others did the same. are unloved, any more than going to private schools makes This may not be easily accomplished at this politically you feel loved. And you needn’t be poor to feel disadvantaged, over again, hundreds of times, maybe thousands, was a gift that allowed me to continually discern what was important, divisive, quarantined time in history, but before we die and lonely. Many of us don’t arrive at that truth until we’re older, not just to the audience, but to me. The more I spoke, the thinking we’ve got it all worked out, we should start asking but that’s often because we didn’t take the time, or have the more confident I became, not just as a speaker, but as a gay others to tell us about themselves. “What was it like for you opportunity, to hear someone speak of experiences very man who truly was fortunate to have experienced love as a growing up?” grandchild, child, brother, nephew, friend, and neighbor. If we truly listen, we’ll learn a whole lot about life that we different than our own. It’s easy to put labels on other people, to put them in hadn’t imagined, and we’ll eventually get to the thing that One question that I always got when I spoke to college and corporate audiences about growing up gay, was, “How did boxes. That’s what’s done when they’re deemed a threat, or, connects us all, “Did you feel loved?” your parents react when you told them?” Fortunately, I was able to say that my parents accepted me, and never stopped loving me no matter how much public attention I brought to them with my well-publicized civil Brian McNaught has been a leading educator on LGBTQ issues globally since 1974.
