REPEAL A WOMAN’S

RIGHT TO VOTE? It might sound ridiculous, but some Republican women have called for it Christiana Lilly

ov. 3 is a big day for the nation — Americans will take to the polls to decide who they want to occupy the White House.

It will also be 100 years and one day from the woman, who was given such a prominent first time that women in the U.S. were allowed spotlight, has openly said she believes in headto participate in a presidential election. “THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME THAT WE’VE HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS.”

then explained, “0ur country might have been better off if it was still just men voting. There is nothing worse than a bunch of mean, hateful women. They are diabolical in how [they] can skewer a person. I do not see that in men. The whole time I worked, I’d much rather have a male boss than a female boss. Double-minded, you never can trust them.” These women join the ranks of generations of women who are against equality and women’s suffrage. While suffragettes marched, smashed windows and made bombs, other women stood up to say they didn’t want the right to vote — they were too busy running the household to keep up with politics. You can even buy a shirt on Amazon to show your disapproval of the 19th Amendment (although, there are complaints about the quality of the fabric). “This isn’t the first time that we’ve had to deal with this,” said Elliott from the League of Women Voters. “I’m of a certain age where I remember Phyllis Schlafly and her argument against the Equal Rights Amendment, which we still don’t have passed.”

A noted conservative activist who died in 2016, Schlafly opposed feminism and proudly stopped the adoption of the ERA, which would have put men and women on the same plane in legal matters. She believed that it went against gender roles that benefited society and protected it from “homosexual privileges” and abortion. “News flash: one reason a woman gets married is to be supported by her husband while caring for her children at home. So long as her husband earns a good income, she doesn’t care about the pay gap between them,” Schlafly said in 2015. Today, these women’s beliefs seem outlandish, and frankly, they’re in the minority. However, they’re loud members of a minority who are consistently given megaphones to espouse these views. Unfortunately for them, American women voters tend to turn out to vote at higher rates than men. At the local level, there are 643,730 women registered to vote in Broward County, out of the 1.2 million total — that’s more than half. Nov. 3, here we come.

The last day to register to vote for the 2020 general election is Oct. 5. Register or update your information at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov.

She noted Justice Ginsburg began, “Ms. Karlan, how do you answer the argument that back in 1964, this could not have been in Congress’s mind ...” The question gave Karlan the opportunity to refute claims by some that Congress never intended Title VII to protect LGBT people. Ginsburg also undercut the opposing side’s claim that firing a male employee for being gay would not be sex discrimination because the employer would fire a female employee for being gay. As Ginsburg pointed out, “There’s nothing in the record as far as I can see that there was a policy on the employer’s

Ginsburg said the gay couple that sought a cake from the Masterpiece Cakeshop “simply requested a wedding cake: They mentioned no message or anything else distinguishing the cake they wanted to buy from any other wedding cake [the baker] would have sold” to a male-female couple. “What matters,” wrote Ginsburg, “is that Phillips would not provide a good or service to a same-sex couple that he would provide to a heterosexual couple.” The gay couple, she said, was “denied service based on an aspect of their identity that the State chose to grant vigorous protection from discrimination.”

BEST OF 2020 SFGN’S FOOD EDITOR TAKES A LOOK AT THE FIVE EATERIES NOMINATED FOR BEST RESTAURANT CAST YOUR VOTE TODAY AT SFGN.COM/BESTOF Rick Karlin

M

y editor Jason Parsley asked me to write a lead-in for the food/dining section of our “Best Of” issue. Luckily, he asked me to write commentary for all the nominees in a category, because picking my favorite Wilton Manors dining establishment would be like Sophie’s Choice.

Granted the consequences aren’t so dire; no one’s going to die but picking a favorite from this group would be impossible. First, they are so disparate, not only in cuisine, but in atmosphere, price point and levels of service, that it’s impossible to compare them on a level playing field. About the only thing they have in common is being welcoming, safe spaces for our community. I can, instead, tell you what I love about each of them. BONA ITALIAN RESTAURANT Owner Glen Weinzimer continues to exhibit that sense of community that has been a hallmark of Bona’s since he took over a few years ago. He still donates a portion of the profits from his Monday night business to local charities, many of which have also been impacted by the pandemic. His charitable endeavors aside, Bona’s is under consideration for Best Restaurant for one main reason; the food is damn good. My favorite dishes? Palm chicken: boneless chicken sautéed in with mushrooms and hearts of palm in cream wine sauce, or the shrimp and scallop scampi. I can’t comment on the desserts because I’ve never made it to that course, main dishes are too filing. ETHOS GREEK BISTRO What is the attraction of this charming dining spot smack in the center of town? Could it be the perfectly prepared Mediterranean fare? Certainly, but it could also be the beautiful atmosphere (even the indoor dining spaces feel as if they are

outside) or the attractive and attentive waitstaff. The menu is mostly based on food from the island of Crete: light, mainly vegetarian and seafood based. Given that, it’s ironic the most popular dishes are the meat platters, which can include chicken, kefte, gyro and lamb chops. The platters are served with a variety of dips, pita wedges, a salad, spinach rice and rosemary red potatoes. Each of the specialties I’ve sampled has always been perfectly prepared and attractively presented. TEE JAY THAI SUSHI As with most sushi restaurants in South Florida, there is also a strong Thai influence on the menu. The main atmosphere is one of celebration. It’s almost impossible to go to Tee Jay’s in Wilton Manors (there’s also one on North Federal in Fort Lauderdale) and not have a good time. The servers are always friendly and flirty and the food, whether Thai or sushi, is well prepared.

Chicken Parmigiana at Bona Italian Restaurant. Photo via Facebook.

Traditional and special sushi creations share the menu with classic Thai food. Among the more unusual dishes worth trying are the crispy, duck topped with a pineapple, cashew nuts and sweet bell peppers or the pad Thai lobster, which upgrades the classic Thai pasta dish with two sauteed lobster tails. TROPICS GRILLE Known more as a hang out space for more mature gentlemen, Tropics has revamped its menu and now offers first class dining. The menu, as you might guess from its clientele, skews more toward the classic meat and potatoes fare; steaks chops, chicken and a hella good meat loaf. The brunch menu offers everything from biscuits and gravy to a lobster roll. And, of course, they have the sweetest server in Wilton Manors named Jamie! Entertainment is presented most nights

and, even in this pandemic, during prime time, it can be difficult to get a table. ROSIE’S BAR & GRILL The patio tables provide the quintessential South Florida dining experience, among lush vegetation. Efficient and friendly servers dish up food with a bit of friendly ‘tude (read the backs of their shirts). Burgers are the main attraction. My favorite is the Bacon Bitty Bang Bang, piled high with house-made bourbon-bacon jam, chipotle Bang Bang Sauce, a roasted plum tomato, and creamy Brie. It’s served topped with crispy kettle chips for a nice crunch. Vegetarians will be happy to know that any burger patty can be subbed for a veggie burger. There’s plenty of other fare, as well. One of my favorites is Pisa Envy (layers of shrimp, black bean and corn salsa, and fresh avocado). Drink specials abound, adding to the party atmosphere.

A

mong the many compelling reasons to make sure that President Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not reelected on Nov. 3, perhaps the 26 most compelling are the transgender Americans — most of them trans women of color — known to have been murdered this year.

We needn’t be simple-minded in making this argument. Trump and Pence did not pull the trigger, and those who did must, of course, bear the consequences for their horrific acts. But the all-too-toxic environment which too many of our transgender siblings have endured in their lives has gotten immeasurably worse over the past four years. For this reason and many more, in an historic move, the 12 newspapers of the National LGBT Media Association (NGMA), which represents the nation’s oldest and most established LGBT publications with a combined circulation of more than one million readers, are issuing this joint endorsement of the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket this week. From the start, Donald Trump has used the trans community as a punching bag to prove his toughness to his socially conservative base hungry for a strongman willing to turn back the clock. He has denied trans folks the ability to serve openly in the military, sought to strip them of nondiscrimination protections in healthcare, worked to rob trans youth of dignity in their schools, and

battled to take away the right of student athletes to compete in sports. And against the trans community as well as lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans, Trump’s administration fought tooth and nail to prevent the pivotal advance we won at the Supreme Court in June — the recognition that we enjoy employment nondiscrimination protections thanks to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Still, Trump and his see-no-evil GOP Senate allies refuse to move the Equality Act, which would extend those nondiscrimination protections across the board in areas like housing and public accommodations. For them, the nation’s most embattled minority are bigots who want to enshrine their right to discriminate under the cloak of “religious liberty.” As in every other aspect of this endorsement, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris offer a stark and redemptive alternative. After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell denied former President Barack Obama federal judicial appointments in his last year in office, he and his colleagues have rubber-stamped an unprecedented

number of judges — many of them viciously right-wing, others lacking in even the most elementary judicial qualifications — whose influence will last for decades to come. The cornerstone decision in protecting reproductive freedom — Roe v. Wade — may already be doomed by the Trump court’s configuration. Give him another chance or two to name a member to the high court and the ball game will definitely be over. Trump’s governing has been much like his court appointments — where he is not cruel, he is merely incompetent. Mexican and other Latin American immigrants have been slurred in overtly racist terms, and their children have been caged. Muslim newcomers to America have also been stigmatized where they have not been blocked outright. The damage is not limited to the newcomers. Latinx and MuslimAmerican citizens have faced increasing Joe Biden spoke at the 2018 HRC National Dinner in levels of hostility and hate crimes. Washington, D.C. Photo credit: Ted Eytan, via Flickr. LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS, DIRECTOR WEIGH IN ON ‘BOYS IN THE BAND’ J.W. Arnold

A

s the old adage goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” Take Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking 1968 play, “The Boys in the Band,” as an example. Set at a birthday party in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the festivities take a nasty and revealing turn as a group of friends become increasingly inebriated as the evening progresses. The men are gay archetypes, familiar today: Michael, the host, an alcoholic and lapsed Catholic; Donald, Michael’s ex, who has spurned the gay lifestyle, left the city and seeking therapy; Hank, the former family man, who now plays house with his lover Larry, a photographer with a wandering eye; Emory, the flamboyant interior decorator; Bernard, the African American who still pines for the handsome scion of a white family his mother served; and Bernard, the birthday boy who mourns the loss of his youth. The party culminates with a game in which each must call someone he has loved and tell them about it. The drama is complicated by the presence of Alan, Michael’s former college roommate, who may or may not have outed himself in the process. In the five decades since the drama’s premiere Off-Broadway, LGBT people have come far, winning marriage equality, workplace protections and most of the rights and privileges of society taken for granted by heterosexuals. But, is “Boys” strictly a period piece, a look at a particular moment in time seemingly long ago, or a more revealing examination of gay culture that endures, regardless of those advances?

(Left to right) Jim Parsons, Robin de Jesús, Michael Benjamin Washington and Andrew Rannells star in Netflix’s adaptation of “The Boys in the Band,” premiering Sept. 30. Credit: YouTube.

“The play is important because it was the first to put a community of gay men on stage – unapologetically and without a veil of disguise. These were men who weren’t all ‘pansies’ or psychologically debilitated. They were simply human,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage in Wilton Manors. Rogow added, “It’s withstood the test of time AS a period piece. I don’t think it’s a play anyone would want to make contemporary. The gay community has moved beyond the selfloathing that is felt by the characters in the play. We’re less marginalized than those men were.

Set at a birthday party in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the festivities take a nasty and revealing turn as a group of friends become increasingly inebriated as the evening progresses.

We’re proud of our relationships, contributions and our visibility in broader society.” Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever concurred, “It is most definitely a period piece. Gay culture has evolved since this play first premiered. The characters in ‘Boys’ deal with a lot of selfloathing and insecurity … The closet doors are shut tight. Gay men today are much more comfortable with themselves and the lives we can openly and proudly lead.” To celebrate the play’s 50th anniversary in 2018, Joe Mantello directed a Tony Awardwinning Broadway revival, pulling together an A-list Hollywood cast of gay actors including Jim Parsons (Michael), Matt Bomer (Donald), Tuc Watkins (Hank), Andrew Rannells (Larry) and Zachary Quinto (Harold). That same cast was reunited by Mantello and Executive Producer Ryan Murphy for a film adaptation premiering on Netflix on Sept. 30. Playwright and local independent Producer

Ronnie Larsen was in the audience at one of those sold out performances. “When I saw the Broadway production I felt like I was watching a period piece … not a bad thing, just how I was experiencing the play. But, I just saw the movie trailer and it felt incredibly new to me, so I’m very excited about this. I’m also a Ryan Murphy/Joe Mantello fan, so there’s that,” Larsen explained. Both Larsen and McKeever urged LGBT audiences to watch the new film. Larsen said, “Before the ‘60s, you just didn’t see gay lives portrayed in theater. It’s like we didn’t exist, so ‘Boys in the Band’ was a huge announcement declaring we’re here and it’s time for us to be in the spotlight.” “It is a fascinating look at what it was like to be a gay man living in New York City [at the time]. The characters are interesting and the humor – and there is a lot – is biting and very funny. As I said, experiencing it as a period piece is the only way to watch it,” McKeever said.

“Boys In The Band” premieres Sept. 30 on Netflix.

PLAYING THE MARKET Sistrunk Marketplace in Fort Lauderdale offers a little of something for everybody Rick Karlin

SISTRUNK MARKETPLACE 115 Northwest 6th Street (Sistrunk Blvd.) Fort Lauderdale 954-329-2551 SistrunkMarketplace.com

S

istrunk Marketplace, which formerly housed the Eli Witt Cigar & Tobacco company, is now a 4,000 square foot food hall, mixed-use event space and retail concept. While up-scale stand-alone food courts are becoming more and more popular throughout the country, Sistrunk Marketplace is the first of its kind in Fort Lauderdale. While now might not be the most opportune time to open such a business, Sistrunk Marketplace is doing quite well, although on a limited schedule; Thursday through Sunday at limited capacity. The fact that it borders the hip, Flagler Village Arts District is definitely in its favor. Among the myriad of food vendors are: • Bronte Cafe is an Aussieinspired coffee house with a laid-back vibe offering coffee and matcha beverages. • Hot Lime, influenced by Miami’s diverse Latin cultures, focuses on craft tacos, ceviche and burritos in a repurposed VW van.

• Poke OG specializes in make-yourown bowls, Poke OG allows the diner to select the base (usually fish) vegetables, sauce and toppings. It also features five signature dishes such as a vegan watermelon poke, traditional Hawaiian poke, and a lobster poke with a truffled white soy.

THE FACT THAT IT BORDERS THE HIP, FLAGLER VILLAGE ARTS DISTRICT IS DEFINITELY IN ITS FAVOR.

• Senbazuru features bento boxes, ramen, and Asian fusion tapas from around the world. • Needa’ Pita offers authentic Mediterranean dishes, including authentic spit-roasted gyros and chicken shawarma. • The Chop Shoppe is as if your neighborhood butcher combined with a sandwich shop. Locally sourced meats, house made sausages, aged sirloin steaks, lamb chops, pork tenderloin and made to order burgers.

• The Empanada Bodega features classic flavors as well as inventive combinations in this staple in Latin cultures.

• Kasai & Koori dishes up traditional Asian sweet treats including Japanese kakigōri, Taiwanese shaved ice, taiyaki waffles and Korean bingsoo, giving all a distinctly American twist.

• Fuoco, where a wood-fire oven is the heart of a simple and classic Italian menu. Crispy eggplant with mozzarella, tomato and arugula, meatballs and, of course, Roman styled, wood-fired pizzas.

• Osom Crepes wraps up savory to sweet combinations in freshly made crepes.

• Heavenly Raw specializes in vibrant, high-nutrient, plant-based, wholesome fare.

• Nellie’s specializes in classic Southern cuisine. There are several private and shared event spaces; a DJ and production music academy, and the SistrunKollective, a co-op style retail boutique. Khoffner Brewery, and Shady Distillery will also be opening sometime this fall. A large, full-service wine and liquor bar is located in the center of the food hall. In accordance with CDC guidelines, and

under Florida’s current Phase 1 guidelines, Sistrunk Marketplace is operating with limited capacity (half of its 565-person capacity). Reservations must be made in advance and masks and social distancing are required. Waitstaff verify reservations at the entrance and direct guests to the tableside online ordering app. After ordering on the app, food is delivered to the patrons’ tables. Group limitations are in effect.

NEW ANTHOLOGY SHINES LIGHT ON QUEER HEALTH David-Elijah Nahmod

Adrian Shanker.

T

here are few topics that aren’t included in the new anthology book “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health.” Edited by Adrian Shanker, a Pennsylvaniabased queer activist, Shanker was inspired to put the book together because of his own experiences with seeking out health care as a queer man living in a largely straight world. As Shanker writes in the book’s forward, he visited a dermatologist’s office for a skin cancer screening and found himself in a clinic that made him wonder if he should be there at all. “The intake forms were unnecessarily restrictive,” he writes. “Biased news programming was on full display in the waiting room, magazines in the waiting room did not cater to patients like me, and comments from the clinic staff displayed brazen cultural incompetence.” Shanker did not return for the recommended follow-up appointment, but instead found an LGBT inclusive dermatologist an hour away. But he realized that not everyone in the LGBT community who needed access to health care would have the means to travel out of town for a doctor’s appointment. Many in the community do not have health insurance. When he was a student at George Washington University in their LGBT Health Policy and Practice program, he was struck by the fact that there was no literature written by health care consumers or activists to inform health care professionals and policy

makers as to the needs of LGBT patients. And so the seeds were planted for “Bodies and Barriers.” The book begins with an insightful introduction by Rachel L. Levine, who writes eloquently of the disparities that LGBT people face, and of the importance of creating policies which address the needs of

LGBT patients. The book is divided into four sections, youth, young adults, middle-aged adults and older adults. Each section is divided into chapters in which a different author addresses a specific health issue as it relates to the LGBT community. Topics include providing proper care and support to transgender youth, creating tobacco free spaces in the LGBT community, (tobacco is the leading cause of death among LGBT people, according to Shanker) HIV stigma, caregiving for older LGBT adults, giving intersex youth autonomy over their own bodies, breast cancer and gender, and even little discussed issues such as anal health. “I came up with the title ‘Bodies and Barriers’ because our queer bodies deserve

health equity,” Shanker told SFGN. “Health equity being the dream that all people have the ability to attain the highest level of health care. Our queer bodies are often left behind because of barriers to care, literal stumbling blocks that keep us from achieving the dream of health equity.” Shanker said that some of those barriers to care are clinical and that some are structural, while others are societal. Promoting the book, in particular making health care professionals aware of it, has been challenging amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but Shanker has been able to conduct a number of virtual trainings and presentations for health care professionals as well as participating in virtual conferences, and doing podcasts. “This book has received critical acclaim
