TRUMP EVENTS CANCELED AT HOLY MACKEREL, STAFF RESPONDS

oly Mackerel, a small-batch craft beer spot in Wilton Manors, was the target of social media after it came out that two Trump events were being hosted at the brewery. Ehab Atallah, the director of operations for Holy Mackerel, said that they were not aware that the parties making the reservations were affiliated with a political group until seeing their posts online. Their social media was filled with backlash, and they shut down their pages while the staff figured out what happened. “From my understanding, I think they The Holy Mackerel in Wilton Manors. TWITTER GAYS RECLAIM PROUD BOYS HASHTAG John McDonald
G
ays took to Twitter over the weekend to reclaim boy pride. In a spirited attempt to drown out hateful rhetoric from right-wing group Proud Boys, gay men and their allies posted inspirational images of life using the #ProudBoys hashtag. “@JerickFL and I are joining thousands of gay men on social media to reclaim #ProudBoys from white supremacists and bigoted neo-nazis. Let’s replace the hashtag with images of love, positivity, and true PRIDE! Your two favorite #ProudBoys are here standing by, ready to VOTE!” tweeted Florida Rep. Carlos G. Smith on Sunday. Smith, an Orlando Democrat, included pictures of their wedding in Puerto Rico in the post. Support for the repurposing of the #ProudBoys hashtag was a global effort. The Canadian Forces in the U.S. account posted a photo of two uniformed men kissing. Reclaiming the #ProudBoys hashtag was the brainchild of actor George Takei. The

Star Trek legend tweeted on Oct. 1: “I wonder if the BTS and TikTok kids can help LGBTs with this. What if gay guys took pictures of themselves making out with each other or doing very gay things, then tagged themselves with #ProudBoys. I bet it would mess them up real bad. #ReclaimingMyShine.” The Proud Boys are designated as a general hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The group is led by Henry “Enrique” Tarrio of Miami and considers itself a social fraternity. President Donald Trump drew attention to the Proud Boys at last week’s debate when he instructed the group to “stand down and stand by.”
GAY ENTREPRENEUR’S DATA COMPANY MAKES WALL STREET DEBUT John McDonald
L
ast month a story surfaced in the press about the activities of Peter Thiel. The gay entrepreneur was accused by Buzzfeed of meeting with radical elements of the Trump campaign in 2016. Some of you may be asking who is Peter Thiel and what has he done? First things first, Thiel, 52, co-founded PayPal and was the first investor of Facebook. His political prowess and business acumen earned Thiel a special honor by this newspaper. “The bottom line for SFGN in selecting Peter Thiel as its ‘Person of the Year’ is not only his willingness to set a unique course for himself politically, but to acknowledge and appreciate what he has done philanthropically,” wrote Publisher Norm Kent in December of 2016. According to Wikipedia, Thiel’s philanthropy involves artificial intelligence, life extension, seasteading and protecting journalists. His unique course politically is supporting Republicans. “I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican, but most of all I am proud to be an American,” Thiel said during his 2016 RNC convention speech. Since that fateful day in Cleveland, Ohio, Thiel hasn’t offered many public remarks. There have been reports that Thiel is
dissatisfied and frustrated with the Trump administration’s handling of COVID-19. His six-minute RNC speech primarily targeted a perceived decline in American technology. Thiel said nuclear bases were still using floppy disks and new fighter jets couldn’t fly in the rain and government software systems rarely “work at all.” “That is a staggering decline for a country that completed the Manhattan project,” Thiel said. Four years later, Palantir Technologies — a company Thiel created — has been eating up government contracts. The company has increased revenues since contracting with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, reported Business Insider. A data analysis company, Palantir recruits employees by offering a diverse lifestyle. Palantir has affinity groups such as PalanGenderQueer and Palan Queer for employees identifying as LGBT seek to foster communtiy interest. SFGN reached out to Palantir Tech, via email, for a comment, but there has been no response. This week the company began trading publicly on the New York Stock Exchange and instantly drew the attention of New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “Palantir needs to be investigated,” tweeted AOC.

seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people that were affected,” DeGeneres said in her monologue. “I know that I am in a position of privilege and power and I realize with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.” When DeGeneres found out about the allegations, she apologized in a memo sent to her staff because it was supposed to be a workplace where “everyone would be treated with respect,” BuzzFeed reported. DeGeneres apologized again in a Zoom town hall meeting with the staff on Aug. 17, where they were told that they would receive paid-off days, have birthdays off, and paid time for doctor appointments and family matters, according to Hollywood.com. During her monologue, DeGeneres also explains why she is known as “the be kind lady” after an 18-year-old college student named Tyler Clementi committed suicide after being bullied for being gay. “I thought the world needed more kindness and it was a reminder that we all needed that, and I think we need it more than ever right now,” DeGeneres said. “I still want to be the one hour a day where people can go to escape and laugh, I want to continue to help all the people we help every day and I’m committed to making this the best season that we have ever had.”

KICK OPEN THE CLOSET DOOR ON COMING OUT DAY John McDonald
T
ime to give notice again, folks. National Coming Out Day is Oct. 11. This is the 32nd recognition of the event, born out of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Kicking open the closet door is the first step, notes the Human Rights Campaign. “Coming out — whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer — STILL MATTERS. When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other,” declared HRC. The organization has a Coming Out Center with resources on their website. Supportive resources and organizations haven’t always been there. When asked if he attended his high school prom at Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School as openly gay Richard Blanco said “no way.”

“That wasn’t a real possibility in 1986,” said Blanco, now 52 and a member of the faculty at Florida International University. “I didn’t come out until I was 27.” A gay Cuban American, Blanco delivered the poem for former President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. He has published multiple books of poetry and has maintained a two-decades-long same-sex relationship. In Miami, Pridelines, an LGBTQ Community Center offers programs for youth and young adults covering coming out issues. This is the 10th anniversary, HRC notes, for trans inclusion on National Coming Out Day.

JAPAN AIRLINES ADOPTS GENDER-NEUTRAL GREETINGS

Airlines in U.S. Also Embrace Inclusivity
Kim Swan
J
apan Airlines recently announced that it will begin using gender-neutral greetings as opposed to “ladies and gentlemen.” “Attention all passengers” and “Good morning everyone” will be among the new terms Japanese carriers will use for announcements at airports and on flights beginning Oct. 1, according to Arabnews. “We aspire to be a company where we can create a positive atmosphere and treat everyone, including our customers, with respect,” Japan Airlines spokesman Mark Morimoto told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in an email. Arabnews also reports that Air Canada and the European EasyJet said last year they would drop “ladies and gentlemen” as well. Gender-equality advocates say corporate support for LGBT rights is growing in the socially-conservative Japan, where same-sex marriage remains illegal and being openly gay is seen as taboo, Arabnews reports. For example, about a third of Japanese companies take measures to support gay couples, according to campaign group Nijiiro Diversity. There was also a Japanese charity that launched a scheme offering digital partnership certificates to allow same-sex couples to receive the same benefits as heterosexual couples in April, and won the backing of businesses from banks to insurers, according to Arabnews. However, activists say discrimination still exists, even though about two dozen cities, towns and wards issue same-sex partnership certificates to same-sex couples, despite lacking legal standing. Japan Airlines announced in March that it will allow female flight attendants to wear trousers and have the option to not wear high heels at work after a feminist campaign took off, Arabnews reports. Japan airlines aren’t the only ones trying to be more LGBT-inclusive. In March 2019, United became the first U.S. airline to give customers non-binary gender options while booking their flights, according to USA TODAY. “United is excited to share with our customers, whether they identify along the binary of male or female or not, that we are taking the steps to exhibit our care for them while also providing additional employee training to make us even more welcoming

for all customers and employees,” United’s Chief Customer Officer Toby Enqvist said in a statement in March 2019. The airline has worked with LGBT organizations The Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project on training employees like using the preferred pronouns, USA TODAY reports. “By providing non-binary gender selection for ticketing and the gender-inclusive honorific ‘Mx’ in user profiles, United Airlines is taking an important step forward for nonbinary inclusion,” Beck Bailey, the acting director of the Workplace Equality Program at the HRC, added in the same statement. United decided to do this after the two big trade groups — Airlines for America in the USA and the global International Air Transport Association — approved a new international best-practices standard that gave travelers the option of using “non-binary IDs” if they so wished, according to USA TODAY. The “non-binary IDs” create an option for “unspecified” or “undisclosed” for passengers booking tickets as well as the options for “male” or “female.” In December 2019, American Airlines does something similar. The airline also gives customers non-binary gender options during their booking process, for example, choosing “U” or “X,” USA TODAY also reports. The nation’s five biggest U.S. airlines — American, Delta, United, Southwest and Alaska airlines — all previously told USA TODAY that they plan to follow suit.

RIVIERA BEACH APPROVES CIVIL RIGHTS ORDINANCE Kim Swan

THE RIVIERA BEACH CITY COUNCIL GAVE INITIAL APPROVAL BY A UNANIMOUS VOTE TO ENACT A CIVIL RIGHTS ORDINANCE. IT WILL GO INTO EFFECT IN OCTOBER. The ordinance prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. Douglas Lawson, City Council Chair Pro Tem, introduced the ordinance at the request of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council — an organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, according to the press release. “Although our nation has made strides at eradicating racism and discrimination, we must continue to shape our nation’s definition of, and access to, equality at the federal, state, and local levels,” said Lawson in a press release. “Understanding that diversity matters strengthens our communities to ensure that women,

people of color, LGBTQ people, and other minorities can attain the American dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” “PBCHRC stands together with Black Lives Matter, which has always put LGBTQ voices at the center of the conversation,” PBCHRC Board Member Jasmin Lewis told City Councilmembers, according to the press release. “However, we acknowledge that while our work has benefitted both the LGBTQ and Black residents of Riviera Beach, as an organization, PBCHRC has not done enough to align our missions with work for racial justice. Today, we publicly state our support in a unified way,” Lewis added. PBCHRC’s “Palm Beach County: You’re Welcome!” campaign has encouraged elected officials in Delray Beach, Greenacres, Haverhill, and Westlake to enact LGBT-inclusive municipal civil rights laws. “While the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited nationwide, there are no federal or statewide laws in effect in Florida which protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in housing and public accommodations,” said PBCHRC President Rand Hoch in the press release. “Therefore, until Congress or the Florida Legislature takes action, we must rely on local officials to fully protect LGBTQ people from discrimination.” Another civil rights ordinance took effect in the Town of Juno Beach on Sept. 23. Only 35 cities, towns and villages in Florida have enacted civil rights ordinances.

quality Florida endorsed Joe Biden for president on Sept. 22, issuing its firstever federal endorsement. In an email to supporters, Equality Florida stated its backing of Biden and his vice presidential nominee, Sen. Kamala Harris of California, is vital to thwart the dangers of four more years of President Donald Trump and Mike Pence in the Oval Office. “For its 23-year history, Equality Florida Action, Inc. has fueled systemic change by remaining laser-focused on electing pro-equality champions to state and local government, refraining from making federal endorsements,” wrote EqFL Media Relations Manager Brandon Wolf. “But in the face of the existential threat posed by the Trump Administration and the potential for a Supreme Court nomination that endangers LGBTQ civil rights, the group is taking action.” Most polling has Biden and Trump even in
Florida. Trump won the state by 112,000 votes in 2016, but EqFL is targeting 500,000 proequality voters at risk of not voting. “The choice could not be clearer or the election more consequential,” said EqFL Founder Nadine Smith. “The country cannot withstand another four years of hate, bigotry, and an assault on the rights of all Americans to live authentically without fear of violence. In November, pro-equality voters in Florida will chart the path forward from this nightmare.” The last day to register to vote in Florida is Oct. 3. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 24. Early voting is Oct. 24-31. Election day is Nov. 3.

SCOTUS JUSTICES TAKE AIM AT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE Activists Alarmed

hile there was cause for alarm for LGBT people watching the opening day of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2020-21 session Monday, there was also at least a tiny bit of reassurance, too. The alarm came with an unusual, unsolicited statement from two of the court’s most conservative justices, indicating they are still opposed to the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which struck down state bans on marriage for same-sex couples. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito made the declaration alongside the court’s announcement that it would not hear the appeal of a Kentucky countyclerk, Kim Davis, who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in defiance of Obergefell. Thomas and Alito’s statement complained that the Obergefell decision had forced Davis to choose between her religious beliefs and her job. They did not mention that Davis lost her appeal at the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals before a panel of three Republican appointees, including Judge John Bush, an appointee of President Donald Trump. “Davis may have been one of the first victims of this Court’s cavalier treatment of religion in its Obergefell decision, but she will not be the last,” warned the statement penned by Justice Thomas. “…Obergefell enables courts and governments to brand religious adherents who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman as bigots, making their religious liberty concerns that much easier to dismiss.” Thomas and Alito agreed that the case Davis brought before the Supreme Court did not “cleanly” present an issue through which the court could revisit Obergefell and address “a problem that only it can fix.” “Until then, Obergefell will continue to have “ruinous consequences for religious liberty.”

Davis needed at least four justices to say yes in order for the high court to take her appeal. She got only two, even though the court currently has five conservative justices. Her appeal did not win the support of Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., who also dissented in the Obergefell decision. And it did not get the support of President Trump’s two appointees — Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. What troubles LGBT legal activists, however, is that the Obergefell decision in 2015 was a close one: 5 to 4, with now retired Justice Anthony Kennedy joining four liberal justices in the majority. Now, not only is Kennedy gone but so is another member of the Obergefell majority: Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg, 87, died Sept. 18 following a long struggle against cancer. And, to replace her, President Trump has nominated a judge with a documented hostility to same-sex marriages: Amy Coney Barrett. “The nightmare of a hostile Supreme Court majority is

already here,” said Lambda Legal Chief Executive Officer Kevin Jennings. “The confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett haven’t even started yet and Justices Thomas and Alito are already creating a laundry list of cases they want to overturn. And unsurprisingly, marriage equality is first on the chopping block. Confirming Judge Barrett would be the final puzzle piece they need in order to make it happen.” “Overturning our right to legally marry the person we love and to protect our families would only be the beginning,” said Jennings, adding that “none of the hard-fought rights that we have won in the courts are safe. That includes the right to marry, to work, or to be recognized as the legal parents of our children.” The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement saying that, while it is good news that there were not four justices to grant Davis’s appeal, Thomas and Alito “took it as an opportunity to renew their war on LGBTQ rights and the historic marriage equality decision…” “They are paving the way for an anti-equality court, just as Senate Republicans rush to confirm Amy Coney Barrett, who herself is an anti-equality extremist.”

invite guests who can only continue to live in our hearts and minds, or those in our imagination. Could you imagine Abraham and Sarah in your sukkah, or the prophet warrior Devorah, or Samson, or Isaiah? How might your spirit be strengthened by their virtual presence? What wisdom might be shared? It is also customary to invite the spirit of our beloved dead, a parent or a partner. There are no restrictions on who may be invited. One way to glean joy is to follow the custom of providing the same amount or value of the food you would have given these supernal guests to a local food bank or a more direct donation. Since we are encouraged to invite such guest on each of the seven days of the holiday, donations can get a nice bump at this time. It is a beautiful way connecting with the world, effectively saying “as I enjoy the harvest, so should others enjoy the harvest.” The evening meal begins with the invitation: Sit, sit, [you] lofty guests; sit, sit [you] holy guests; sit, sit [you] guests of faith. The prayer continues with the plea that all loftyand exalted guests come and take their place in the sukkah. This year, clearly, the invitations will have to be different. We’ll be relying much more on the visits from supernal guests, the ones who’ve always remained with us even after they left, the One who was always there.
Sit With Me / Not Alone The safest place in times of COVID: outdoors, where fresh air carries viral particles away. Here beneath this ragged sketch of roof air circulates freely. I can breathe. The safest companion in times of COVID: Myself. Or you, Holy One: dressed for the season in worn jeans and flannel shirt, and maybe flip-flops reluctant to let summer end. Sit with me beneath the cornstalks, God. Sing along with my solitary kiddush. Hold my hand. Even sheltering-in-place if I remember you’re here with me I am not alone. (Rabbi Rachel Barenblat, in Prayers/Poems for Sukkot in Times of covid-19) This is perhaps the message of Sukkot, that we are not alone. Even before COVID, the world was fragile and dangerous. Therefore we are urged, year after year, to build solid relationships that can withstand the vicissitudes of time and the uncertainty of nature. It may be quaint or naïve, but I believe the only true security we have in this life are our relationships and the bonds of love and lovingkindness that connect us. Have a Happy Sukkot!

SUPERMARKET SWEEPS SFGN’s Food Editor ranks the local grocery stores
Rick Karlin
The visit for the review and the review were written before the COVID-19 shutdown. Contact the restaurant for its current dining guidelines.
A
fter moving here from the Midwest seven years ago, there were two differences that immediately struck me. People are friendlier and grocery stores are completely different.
In the Midwest, I was used to expansive produce sections with reasonably priced fruits and vegetables. Produce is much more expensive in South Florida. Since so many of us are cooking at home more often than dining out, supermarkets are seeing a large influx of business. Folks in our community are excited about the opening of a Sprouts grocery store in the old Kmart space on Oakland and 6th. With this increased focus on grocery shopping we thought it was time to see how the various supermarket chains compare. A recent report by Consumer Reports indicated that consumers were quite brand loyal in their supermarket shopping habits. The article cited that, after price, produce quality and the variety of goods a store carried, were among the most important reasons members chose to shop where they do. Employee helpfulness and friendliness is also a key to the popularity of a grocery chain. In comparing our supermarkets, we chose only grocery stores within a 10-minute drive of Wilton Manors. For the Publix store, we opted for the location on Sunrise and 15th, rather than Five-Points because it was larger and more indicative of a typical Publix store. Publix is an employee-owned, American supermarket chain headquartered in Lakeland, Florida. Founded in 1930 by George W. Jenkins,
Publix is a private corporation that is wholly owned by present and past employees and members of the Jenkins family. Aldi was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in Germany in 1946. The brothers split the company in 1960 when they could not agree whether to sell cigarettes. Aldi later acquired Trader Joe’s and continues to operate it as a separate entity from the parent company. Both chains offer pre-packaged meats and seafood but have no on-site delis or butcher departments. The stores are sometimes oddly laid out, but, once you learn the idiosyncrasies of a store, are easy to navigate. A new Aldi opened at Sunrise near Andrews at the end of September. Winn-Dixie, is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida and operates approximately 500 stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and Mississippi. The company has had its present name since 1955 and traces its roots back to 1925. The layout of the stores is typical for an American grocery store with wide aisles and products of similar type grouped together. Whole Foods was founded in Austin, Texas, when four local businesspeople decided the natural foods industry was ready for a supermarket format. The original Whole Foods Market opened in 1980. As it grew, it acquired other natural food grocery store chains and is now a nation-wide chain

and a subsidiary of the Amazon company. The Fresh Market chain of gourmet supermarkets based in Greensboro, North Carolina, was founded by Ray and Beverly Berry on March 5, 1982. The concept was to develop a grocery store that brought back the feeling of open European-style
markets. As such, the stores have a more limited range of stock available and the aisles are narrower and tend to meander. The company operates 176 stores in 24 states, located in the Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast and recently the West Coast.
In the chart above we ranked the stores on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high) in seven categories. It’s interesting to note that you don’t always get what you pay for. The store with the lowest amount paid for the grocery cart of items (Aldi) ended up with the highest score, while the costliest shopping trip (Fresh Market), ended up with the lowest score. What was most surprising is that Aldi also ended up with one of the highest scores in providing vegetarian and gluten free shoppers the most options. Of course, since the Aldi store we visited is brand new, that might account for a bit of an advantage, but the basket totals don’t lie. It’s the best bargain in town, or at least within 10 minutes of Wilton Manors.

You may not be able to do anything about the U.S. Senate ratifying a justice that is going to set back civil rights by a century, but you can cast a ballot against some of the judges Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis have appointed to the bench in Florida. They are not your friends. The Federalist Society’s anachronistic voice is infiltrating Florida courts. Ron DeSantis is appointing the same type of person to our courts that Donald Trump wants on the Supreme Court. You figure out the rest. If you oppose a neanderthal view that espouse politics, not principle, vote against them. These are judges who advocate a conservatism protecting no voices but their own. As the publisher and lawyer, I am often asked about my thoughts on the judicial races populating your election ballot. There are not that many this year, but the few there are matter. To start with, I am recommending you deny a new six-year term for Supreme Court Justice Carlos Muñiz. At the appellate level, you should also say no to the merit retention of Judges Alan O. Forst and Mark Klingensmith of the Fourth
District Court of Appeal. These are political appointees dressed in judicial robes. It is rare when jurists are not retained. They are not the focus of this year’s election. But their decisions shape our lives. Make your voice heard. Just say no. On the other hand, Fourth District Judge Martha Warner has served on the bench for over 30 years with distinction. Vote Yes. In Broward County, Judge Dennis Bailey has earned another term on the circuit court bench. Vote Yes. Florida jurists impact our lives, from transgender issues to minimum wage laws, from environmental challenges to advancing medical marijuana laws, from civil litigation to death penalty cases. For example, 62 percent of Floridians voted to restore voting rights for ex-felons who have served their time and done their sentence. Our governor instead has gone to court to deny their rights. Florida needs jurists who will stand for justice and excellence, not politics and expedience. Let your voice echo. Say no when you have to.

LGBT HISTORY
MONTH
SFGN TO PARTICIPATE IN MULTINEWSPAPER October marks LGBT History Month, which started in 1994 by a Missouri high school teacher, Rodney Wilson. Wilson sought out other teachers and community leaders for his effort and they chose October because school was in session and it coincided with National Coming Out Day on October 11. Soon enough LGBT History Month was endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay ad Lesbian Task Force, and the National Education Association. In 2006 Equality Forum took over the responsibility for providing content, promotion and resources for the month, including the website LGBThistorymonth.com which features a different LGBT icon each day in October. SFGN will be participating, along with two dozen other LGBT publications around the country, in a special history project
HISTORY PROJEC T
spearheaded by the Philadelphia Gay News throughout October. SFGN will contribute two pieces this year to the project – one of which will be a look at the gay history of Miami’s Vizcaya, home of the legendary White Party. In the past we’ve explored the histories of Florida’s infamous Johns Committee and whether Addison Mizner, an iconic South Florida architect, was a gay man. “For many years the LGBT community didn’t know it’s own history. In many cases historians tried to censor those voices from the past,” Mark Segal, publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, has previously said. “We’ve attempted to examine and record our history so we as a people are no longer invisible from current events to history books. All segments of the population have a past, our’s has been invisible for too long.”

LOCAL MUSICAL DIRECTOR DIES IN HOME ACCIDENT J.W. Arnold
B
eloved gay musical director, accompanist and arranger Paul Reekie died unexpectedly on Friday, Oct. 2 after an accident at his Boca Raton home. Bruce Linser, a close friend and colleague, broke the news on social media the following morning to a stunned South Florida theatrical community, sharing that Reekie, 48, had been working around the home. As of press time, further details had not been released. Friends quickly took to Facebook and Twitter to share their grief: “Our theatre community is in shock today, dealing with the sudden, tragic loss of music director Paul Reekie. Paul was a brilliant musician and pianist who was a mainstay in our community,” wrote music director Caryl Fantel, who posted a photo on Facebook of Reekie with three other local musicians performing on the same piano at a Carbonell Awards ceremony. “Thanks for sharing the music with me and so many others.” “I am just heartbroken to hear about the passing of Paul Reekie,” wrote costume designer Rick Peña on Facebook. Both actor Conor Walton and publicist Carol Kassie also described Reekie’s death as “a terrible loss to the community.” Online tributes continue as the local theater community processes his death and remembers his legacy. Reekie was born in Argentina in 1972 to an Argentinian mother and American father. The family moved to London and then back to his father’s home state of Michigan, where Reekie grew up. He took to music early, acting in school productions and reportedly was invited to perform for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Detroit in 1987. He studied computer programming in college and followed his parents to Florida in 1989, where he took a job as a computer systems consultant. Linser, who moved to the area in 2004, discovered Reekie accompanying a gay men’s chorus concert and recruited him to accompany his cabaret performances.

Within a year, he was directing his first show at Palm Beach Dramaworks. “He always blamed me or credited me for getting him into this world,” Linser said in an interview with Florida Theater on Stage. Over the next 15 years, he directed dozens of critically-acclaimed shows at the Wick Theatre, Lynn University, Broward Stage Door, Marquee Theater Company, Palm Beach Dramaworks and Arts Garage. He was nominated twice for regional Carbonell Awards and won Silver Palm Awards for “Hair” and “The World Goes ‘Round” at MNM Theatre, where he was resident musical director. Reekie frequently donated his talents to local nonprofit organizations and he enjoyed working with students and upcoming performers. He was set to music direct “The Light in the Piazza” at Palm Beach Dramaworks when COVID-19 forced the shutdown of live theatrical performances in March. Reekie has no immediate family survivors, but friends and colleagues announced plans for a celebration of life gathering at a later date.

1950’S ‘HOMOSEXUAL PANIC’ CAN BE TRACED BACK TO MIAMI MURDER By Graham Brunk
Take Control Of Your Business
The ‘Homosexual Panic’ that started in the 1950s can be traced back to one event – the murder of Eastern Airlines Flight Attendant William T. Simpson in August of 1954. But maybe more importantly, wasn’t the murder itself, but how Miami Daily News reporter Milt Sosin covered the tragedy.
