quality Florida’s highest honor of the year went to the man behind the man. Florida’s largest civil rights organization bestowed its “Voice for Equality” award to Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Pete Buttigieg, the out gay man who shattered political glass ceilings during the 2020 presidential campaign. “It was a huge political breakthrough for an out gay man to run for president as a major party candidate,” said EqFL Chief Executive Officer Nadine Smith, in a press release. Buttigieg was a little known mayor of a midwestern college town when he entered the race for the Democratic party nomination, but soon emerged as a top tier candidate. He confidently pushed back against the Trump administration, often referencing his own faith as proof being gay and Christian were not mutually exclusive. Chasten and Pete married in 2018. “And it was an equally tremendous cultural breakthrough for Chasten to stand beside his husband every step of the way, supportive, authentic, and a force for change in his own “I’M STILL right,” said Smith. During China’s national census, a count attempting to record the demographics of the world’s most populous country, LGBT couples are working to be recognized. China began the census Nov. 1, collecting data from its citizens, including marital status, according to the South China Morning Post. But those same polls also indicated that incumbent Republican President Donald Trump got far twice as many LGBT votes this year as he did in 2016, when he beat Democrat Hillary Clinton for the job. The exit polls conducted by the National Election Pool for the New York Times and

major television networks found that 61 percent of voters who agreed to be surveyed and who identified as LGBT voted for Biden, while 28 percent voted for Trump. (The LGBT data was based on approximately 1,100 selfidentified voters, or seven percent of 15,590 voters interviewed nationwide outside polling places, early voting sites, or by phone, to include voters by mail.) In 2016 exit poll data, 78 percent of LGBT people voted for Clinton, 14 percent for Trump. In 2012, 76 percent of LGBT voters supported Democratic former President Barack Obama, 22 percent supported Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida and a long-time national LGBT activist, reacted to the numbers: “Being LGBTQ isn’t an exemption from racism. Trump stokes white fear in an increasingly diverse America. His immigrant bashing and
persistent racist dog whistle has built him a rabid and dangerous following. Add redbaiting and it is the oldest play in the GOP playbook. It isn’t shocking that some slice of LGBTQ people align with that ideology. After all, we are everywhere, we are part of every community.” Lorri Jean, head of the nation’s largest

ELECTION•the results are in daughter Tiffany speaking to some events), and populating a GetOutSpoken.com website with stories aimed at convincing LGBT supporters to vote Trump. Biden’s victory signals a likelihood in the coming months that the new administration will undo many of the actions taken by the Trump administration that were seen as hostile to the LGBT community –from withdrawing Obama-era directives that supported protections for LGBT people in various federal agencies, supporting religious organizations’ policies of discriminating against LGBT people, and banning transgender people from serving in the military, to name a few. Where President Trump opposed the Equality Act, President-elect Biden has promised to support it. And in the coming weeks and months, as Biden and VicePresident-Elect Kamala Harris work with their transition team to prepare for launching their administration Jan. 20, many LGBT activists expect LGBT people will be among those considered for various positions. A Washington Post article this week mentioned gay presidential contender Pete
Buttigieg as a possible ambassador to the United Nations and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten as a possible Secretary of Education. Lesbian political strategist Karine Jean-Pierre, who served as a senior advisor to the Biden campaign and, eventually, chief-of-staff of running mate Harris, is a likely pick for some position at the Biden White House. LGBT CANDIDATES: The LGBTQ Victory Fund supported 312 LGBT candidates for office Nov. 3, from local sheriffs to members of Congress. As of late last week, the Victory Fund had results for 261 of those races, and the majority (71 percent) were victories. The winners include state house and senate candidates in such unexpected states as Arkansas, Idaho, and Montana, including a gay Republican Don Zwonitzer re-elected to Laramie County’s state house seat in Wyoming; and vice president of the federally recognized Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. The states boasting the largest number of LGBT candidates includes California (with 54), Texas (18), Florida (17), Michigan (14), and Illinois (11).

PENNSYLVANIA DELIVERS PRESIDENCY TO JOE BIDEN John McDonald
J
oe Biden will be the 46th president of the United States. Biden surpassed the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the election on Saturday, taking his birth state of Pennsylvania. At last count, Biden led sitting-President Donald Trump in the popular vote 74,857,880 (50.6%) to 70,598,535 (47.7%). Biden’s victories in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada gave him a 306 to 232 victory in the electoral college. “I am honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice President-elect Harris,” Biden said in a statement released Saturday morning. “In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America.” Biden and California Senator Kamala Harris, became the first Democrats to win Arizona in 24 years and the first Democrats to win Georgia in 28 years. The Biden/Harris ticket flipped Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin — re-building the “Blue Wall” — to secure victory. “Pennsylvania is the birthplace of American democracy and now we’re securing it for the next generation,” tweeted Pennsylvania Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, a gay Black man and Biden campaign surrogate. On Thursday, Trump tried to cast doubt on the results by essentially calling the entire city
of Philadelphia corrupt. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney responded by telling Trump to “put on his big boy pants” and concede. Biden’s late surge in Pennsylvania came on the strength of mail-in ballots, which officials do not process until election day. Born in Scranton, Pa., Biden served as a U.S. Senator from Delaware for 36 years before being selected as former President Barack Obama’s vice president. He announced his intentions to seek the Democratic nomination last April and overcame a field of 20 candidates, thanks largely to the support of Black voters, energized by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the death of Congressman John Lewis of Georgia and Trump’s constant dog whistles to his followers about conditions in urban, inner cities. “With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation,” Biden said. “It’s time for America to unite. And to heal.” In two weeks Biden will turn 78 making him the oldest president ever elected. Harris, 56, will become the first female Black vice president ever elected. Meanwhile, Trump becomes the first oneterm president since George H.W. Bush was defeated by Bill Clinton in the 1992 election. Retreating to his golf course in Palm Beach on Saturday, still in denial, Trumped tweeted “I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!”

LGBT HOPES FOR PROGRESS HINGE UPON
GEORGIA SENATE RUNOFFS The elections take place Jan. 5 Lisa Keen

I
n October then-presidential candidate Joe Biden told the Philadelphia Gay News he would “make enactment of the Equality Act a top legislative priority during my first 100 days.” Now that Biden has won the election that promise all depends on Georgia, which has become ground zero in the battle to protect LGBT equality and, once again, stave off attempts to undermine American democracy. “Jan. 5 is now a critically, critically, critically important date,” said Fred Smith, a Georgia activist and member of Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ LGBTQ Advisory Board. He was speaking with other Georgia LGBT leaders to Project Q Atlanta, an LGBT news website, just days after the Nov. 3 presidential election and key Senate races around the country. As the dust settles around most of the U.S. Senate races, the partisan make-up of the next session stands at 48 to 48, with four seats not yet called. One of those seats is North Carolina, whose Democrat is 95,000 votes behind the Republican incumbent. That vote count should be finalized Thursday. One of the other seats is Alaska, whose Democrat is 57,000 votes behind the Republican incumbent. The vote count there will stop receiving ballots on Nov. 18. If both of those
seats go to the Republican incumbents, the Senate tally will stand at 50 Republicans, 48 Democrats, and the two run-off races in Georgia give Democrats their only chance of taking control of the Senate. (When there is a 50-50 split in the Senate, the tie is broken by the incumbent vice president who, next year, will be Democrat Kamala Harris.) “Biden’s hands will absolutely be tied across the board on every issue, including LGBTQ issues,” said Smith, if Republicans win both of the seats from Georgia. Lucas Acosta, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, said his group “will be making some announcements in the coming days on Georgia, but I can say we will be heavily involved.” HRC has been heavily involved in Georgia since last year, when it partnered with Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight organization to combat voter suppression in Georgia. HRC promised a six-figure contribution to Fair Fight, saying that while voter suppression efforts are primarily aimed at people of color, “it has also harmed LGBTQ Americans.” Smith, who is also a law professor at
“BIDEN’S HANDS WILL ABSOLUTELY BE TIED ACROSS THE BOARD ON EVERY ISSUE, INCLUDING LGBTQ ISSUES,” SAID SMITH, IF REPUBLICANS WIN BOTH OF THE SEATS FROM GEORGIA. 14

Emory University, said the outcome of the two Georgia run-off elections will control not only the types of judges Biden will be able to appoint but “whether he’ll get to appoint judges at all….[as well as] the type of people he’ll be able to appoint to his cabinet and pro-equality legislation.” Jeff Graham, president of the Equality Georgia board, told Project Q Atlanta that the LGBT community needs to do “hard work for the next nine weeks.” These two run-off races are the result none of the four major party candidates for U.S. Senate in Georgia getting at least 50 percent of the vote during the Nov. 3 election. Therefore, the top two vote-getters in both races now square off for Jan. 5: One race pits incumbent Republican David Perdue against Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff. The other pits incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler against Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock.
Warnock garnered 340,000 more votes than Loeffler on Nov. 3, but a second Republican in the race took away 979,000 votes from Loeffler. Warnock can hope to pick up the 459,000 votes siphoned away by two other Democrats in the Nov. 3 race, but it’s clear, the race is going to be tough. Democrat Ossoff received 88,000 fewer votes that his Republican opponent Perdue, but there was one other candidate on the ballot: a Libertarian, who won 115,000 votes. Fivethirtyeight.com, the data analysis website founded and run by gay statistical guru Nate Silver, said “Things aren’t looking so rosy for Democrats now.” It calls a Democratic sweep of both Georgia seats “unlikely.” In the presidential race Georgia now heads to a recount where it’s unlikely to switch the outcome, while Democrats and Republicans gear up for a fierce battle over the Senate.

The Beautiful Unknown…

As we move past Election Day here in the Island City and around the nation, a sense of optimism is in the air. Our new President-elect Joe Biden is reaching out to all Americans to join together in tackling the troubles that lie ahead due to COVID-19 pandemic and our economy. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris makes history as she breaks through the glass ceiling becoming the first female vice president. Hope and optimism is essential to achieving success over the challenges that lie ahead. The beautiful unknown draws us forward fueled by knowledge, hope, unity, and strength, unlike the darkness of fear and lies. Let the sun shine through the storm clouds of the last four years as we bask in its splendor and hope. Storm clouds over our Island City have moved away for now, but not before leaving much of our city and region covered in water. Unfortunately many residents suffered flooding within their homes. Many others found themselves looking out their windows to what looked like lake front property. Lawns, driveways and streets filled with storm water turning large areas of our city into flood zones. Understandably, such an unprecedented amount of rain just overwhelmed much of our city’s infrastructure, but the extent of the flooding and related issues leaves many in our city dazed, frustrated, and very concerned of what the next storm might bring. As flood water was still receding throughout neighborhoods of our city, our newly elected mayor and two new city commissioners were swornin this week. In doing so we first had to say goodbye to out-going Commissioners, Tom Green and Julie Carson. Sometimes as we move ahead to better days, we have the bittersweet goodbyes to those so instrumental in getting us to where we are today. Thank you again Tom and Julie for your tremendous contributions to our Island City, best wishes and much appreciation! Scott Newton, Chris Caputo and Mike Bracchi were sworn in this past Tuesday

night within the Commission chambers. Residents should feel confident that our new mayor and city commissioners, along with veteran Commissioners Paul Rolli and Gary Resnick will lead our great city into the beautiful unknown. Much lies ahead on that road for our Island City. Dealing with recent weather events, infrastructure improvements will be a looming issue that will have to be dealt with, along with the continued maintenance of existing infrastructure, buildings, parks and facilities. The reality of governance will be waiting for our new City Commission with less glamorous issues such as the cost of infrastructure and residents demand for better services. There is much confidence that this Commission is ready for the task at hand and with the support of a dedicated and professional city staff, residents should be optimistic of better days ahead for our Island city. Many remain hopeful that those who also participated in this past election will

continue their involvement with our city and not just disappear off the scene as many in years past. During the campaign we heard from a pool of very talented and inspirational candidates, hopefully some will continue their involvement. Unfortunately Doug Blevins was the only one who made comments at the City Commission meeting this week during the swearing-in ceremony. Other candidates had an opportunity to offer words of congratulations to the newly elected officials and state their willingness to continue serving the needs of our city, however this was a missed opportunity. Doug, thank you for your continued commitment to our city. So as we now launch off to the beautiful unknown, both here in our Island City and in our nation, let us continue with hope, optimism, and camaraderie. As we tackle the problems that need fixing, as we securely plan for future needs, as we safely deal with COVID-19 and future crisis, let us never stop being crazy or foolish at times to dream. Dreaming of what could be, if we are only willing to take that leap of faith, is what truly moves us ahead. Let us take that leap of faith with our neighbors, our community, our elected officials, our city staff and let’s dream of making life just better here… WMG

A SANE MAJORITY REBUKES AN INSANE PRESIDENT Norm Kent

T
here is nothing more unsurprising than Donald Trump’s refusal to accept defeat. The witch who is not dead yet is refusing to die. The world is celebrating anyway. Donald Trump has never been a good loser or gracious winner. Nor has he ever been accused of being a man of decent character. To quote Republican Senator Mitt Romney, “he has a relatively relaxed relationship with the truth.” But rest easy, my friends. Like the maniacal Joker who terrorized Gotham in the Batman comics, this lunatic is going to wind up in an insane asylum. Or a jail. It is so very possible that on the day Joe Biden is sworn into office in Washington, D.C., Donald Trump will be posting bail in a courtroom of the Southern District of New York. This is real, not fake news. There are legitimate reasons to believe that the attorney general of New York has already named Donald Trump as an unindicted coconspirator for criminal acts that predated his presidency. This could lead to hard time, not a run for a second term in 2024. Trump should be glad he sponsored a crime reform bill. He may need it for his own early release. But I am not sure a convicted felon can run for president. Catch your breath today though. We have delivered ourselves from evil. America may have elected a petulant little child as president in 2016, but we have now taken away his lollipop. Our country is no longer his play toy. Like most spoiled brats, he won’t give up easily, or go away quietly.
Expect a 75-day temper tantrum. Captain Chaos will spend the next two months engaged in random acts of juvenile retribution. Expect impulsive firings, wholesale pardons, and retaliatory actions against those who challenged the king, even if it means sabotaging the government or the transition of power. He couldn’t care less. He wasn’t going to the presidential inauguration anyway. Democrats can find comfort in knowing Joe Biden does not need and would not have sought the assistance of Donald Trump with a presidential transition. He has a guy named Barack Obama he can turn to, and an experienced cabinet chomping at the bit for new jobs. America will be secure without the help of Mike Pompeo or Jared Kushner. Sanity has been restored to the Oval Office. Twitter’s stock may go down. Good time to sell. American policy will no longer be made in the middle of the night by a lonely man lying in his bed with a smart phone. As time passes, so will Trump. His tweets will be irrelevant, his threats inconsequential. The fire dragon will flame out. The Republican party will find a new hero to bank their future on. Don’t forget, they had 20 guys run against Trump in 2016 too. They don’t want him back either. Don’t be too worried about the claims about a fraudulent election made by Trump and his legal team of Larry, Moe and Curley. They will be tossed like Chief Orange Hair. They already have been exposed as fabricated, and fraudulent themselves.
LIKE MOST SPOILED BRATS, HE WON’T GIVE UP EASILY, OR GO AWAY QUIETLY. EXPECT A 75DAY TEMPER TANTRUM.

Trump wasn’t happy losing once. Now he is going to lose twice. As SFGN goes to press today, he is already 0 for 12 with court actions. It may be news fodder for FOX, but it’s headed to the shredder in the legal system. He is lucky if he makes it to the Supreme Courtyard at the Marriott. The President does have a right to exhaust every legal remedy at his disposal. Let’s hope those are the only ones he uses. He is a cornered rat, and those arachnids don’t always play by society’s rules. You can expect the worst from him. He will give that his best. The courts also have a right to sanction and admonish him and his attorneys for filing unsubstantiated and fraudulent claims that have no merit. Let’s hope they do. It will get scary only if they don’t. He couldn’t care less about election fraud or counting ballots. He just wanted to be coronated. Instead, he was crowned. Celebrate. The clown is no more. He has
been sent to the sand trap. Permanently, we hope. People around the world were dancing in the streets on the day his music died. That is something we usually watch on our TV’s when dictators are toppled. One of the finest actors in the world passed last week- Sean Connery. Ironically, in 1975, the knighted Scotsman starred in a film called “The Man Who Would Be King.” A superb actor in a great film, he played a tyrannical role where he tried to dominate a tribe. He wound up getting beheaded on top of a mountain. Trump simply got outvoted. Lucky for him. He only ran into a roadblock called democracy. Off to your gilded gold toilets in Mara-aLago, you go, sir, because in America we do not elect kings. We overthrow them, just a little more politely than the rest of the world. As I said, lucky for you, sir. Lucky for you.

hen I moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1994, I rented half of a historic house in Sailboat Bend. At the time, the neighborhood was already a cliché: Neglected by straight folk, taken over by gay folk. My landlord Peter lived in the other half. He worked for the city, and he was a Log Cabin Republican. Peter avidly supported a party that not only opposed gay marriage but even civil unions — and would’ve been quite pleased if the previous owner of his home didn’t want to sell to someone like him. When I asked Peter why he voted for politicians who hated him, he replied, “It’s business, not personal.” He wanted to buy more property, quit working for the city, and make lots of money. He believed Democrats would burden him with more taxes and regulation. I pointed out a financial irony he’d OBVIOUSLY, already considered: If Republicans REPUBLICANS controlled all levers of government, ARE PICKING wouldn’t it become harder for a gay man to become a millionaire? Democrats can take pride in this: They’ve made their cities safe enough for marginalized groups to consider not voting for them. Finally, Democrats have an opportunity to win those voters back. I don’t know what happened with Peter, or if he ever became a millionaire. But at the time, he was an aspirational Republican. In other words, he didn’t know for sure that Democrats would overtax and overregulate him. He was just starting out as a real estate mogul, so he was guessing. Democrats can easily make the case they’re not communists. Thus, while Republicans are rejoicing over these results — the conservative Washington Examiner gloated Thursday that Trump “sent left-wing identity politics into a death spiral” — they should probably thank Democrats for their gains.
If that’s true, this is good news — for Republicans and Democrats. Obviously, Republicans are picking up voters. Bully for them. Maybe, just BIGOTRY OF TRUMP’S DOUBLE BUMP maybe, it moderates the inherent THE PARTY’S bigotry of the party’s rightest wing. NEW PLACES AND FAMILIAR FACES Rick Karlin
O
ne thing you can say about the South Florida dining scene is that it’s never boring. Places come and go so quickly you can barely keep track. The pandemic hasn’t slowed anything down. Here are a few changes taking place in the area. Photo credit: Canyon.

It’s got to be difficult opening a restaurant in these trying times, so you have to give Chef Nate credit for that. The former chef of Tropics has taken over the spot formerly occupied by Mind Your Manors, right across the street from his old stomping grounds, the simply named, Chef Nate’s. I don’t review places until they’ve been open a few months, to give them time to smooth out any problems encountered on opening.
CANYON, long a popular place to grab dinner before a movie at the Gateway Theater next door, has moved. It will take over the spot at 620 S. Federal, formerly home to One Door East, and its next-door neighbor, formerly home to Valentina Cucina, will now house Primadonna. Both restaurants are coowned by chef Chris Wilber and his business partner Mario Di Leo. One of the reasons for the move is additional space. Wilbur says that by taking over the new space, Canyon will almost double its dining-room and bar seating (to 115 seats), allowing the restaurant to offer reservations for the first time.
CHEF NATE’S 2045 N. Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors chefnates.com no phone number listed yet SIAM CUISINE, the first Thai restaurant in South Florida, and a staple in Wilton Manors for decades, is another casualty of the COVID pandemic. It shuttered quietly a few weeks ago and although the website is still active, the phone number has been disconnected. The new business going into that space will be called The Violet Hour. There is a similarly named lounge in Chicago that specializes in recreating cocktail parties of the 1920s, but they inform me that the Wilton Manors location is not affiliated with their establishment. Let’s hope it’s just as upscale, we could use a swanky night spot. We need an excuse to put on real shoes and long pants every now and then.
PRIMADONNA will serve both traditional and inventive interpretations of Italian classics. This is high-end Italian; appetizers start at $12 for a simple salad and go up to $20. Entrees are $20-$30 range for pasta, and up to nearly $50 for meat and fish dishes. There’s also a serious dress code; no shorts, Bermuda shorts, tank tops, baseball caps, sneakers, or flip-flops! THANKSGIVING TURMOIL BREAKING BREAD WITH FAMILY TRUMPERS

ou ever wonder why families have rifts? Or new holiday traditions are started? As a gay married man I think about that
a lot. You know in 2020 I shouldn’t have to think about that at all. I mean marriage in general is a boring topic. Lately it’s mostly paying bills, working hard, trying to make plans for the future and keeping our husbands and wives safe during this pandemic. Mowing the lawn and taking out the trash. Saving for retirement. Some of us work extra hard to have children and raise a family. We have bright spots in the mundane. Laughter between Curtis and I at our remote control wars while trying to find a show we both like to watch (P.S. it’s “Schitt’s Creek”). Our love of camping and our dream of a nice RV to spend our retirement traveling the country from sea to shining sea. Our dogs and how much joy they bring us. But mostly it’s the little things that we do for each other that helps our love and marriage grow. Now let’s imagine people in your family supporting Trump. With his hate and division. His choices of nominees that would strip my life bare. Would invalidate my marriage. Would remove protections in the workplace and allow an employer to fire me just because I’m gay. Then go back to trying to love them. To sit across from them at a holiday dinner and share pleasantries. All the while knowing that they voted to invalidate my life and my love. All because they choose to turn a blind eye to a racist, homophobic, madman who has overseen the near destruction of this nation. Economy tattered. Hundreds of thousands of Americans dead. And the Republican Senate and the White House choosing to ram a hyper-conservative fanatic onto the court all while the country is on fire and then adjourning business until after the election. I don’t think so. One has to be true to oneself. My father Andy taught me principles matter. Not when they are easy to stand by but when they are hard to. Because principles and integrity are what shape us. They define us. They mold us into the men and women that we are. When I was a kid I would often wonder about holiday guests that sat at our dinner

table that weren’t blood related. Why they weren’t sharing dinner with their families? What was the reason? Perhaps their families lived far away. Or perhaps their families had passed on. Or maybe it’s because their families have different views than them. Views so repugnant to who they are as a human being that they couldn’t even stomach a meal across the table from them. I bet a lot of my friends on Facebook feel the way I feel today. I’m here to tell you you’re not alone. That brings me to the new holiday traditions part. I think healthy traditions are important. I think spending the holidays in the spirit of love and fellowship are key to well being. Many of us are separated from our families this year due to this pandemic. I think that’s God’s work honestly because of this election. Luckily I have the love and support of my parents, who understand the consequences of this election. For that I am grateful. And I love them for it. But keeping the peace as a whole while my freedoms are in the balance. I don’t think so. But eventually when the dust settles we will have to make the choice of whether to break bread with people who chose to support us or support invalidating my love, my marriage, my family and my well-being. And for that, I will not forget. And most certainly new holiday traditions will be born for many of us. So be prepared for another few place settings at the table next year. Sami Kaniewski, it’s been a while since we’ve had a white Christmas. And we’re looking forward to many more to come.

While he might be the oldest dog currently at the shelter at 9 years old, he certainly does not act his age. Waylon is calm and sweet, but he does get the zoomies when he goes outside and loves to run and play. He likes tennis balls, is treatmotivated and enjoys going for walks. This fellow, who looks like a boxer mix, is good with people of all ages and other dogs. Can Waylon be part of your family?
