LA Blade Digital Staff 12-year-old boy took his own life after enduring apparent months of what his family and others labeled ugly vitriolic anti-LGBT bullying and abuse. Eli Fritchley, a seventh grader at Cascades Middle school located in Wartrace in Bedford County, was found on Nov. 28 by his mother, who walked into her son’s bedroom and discovered his lifeless body. In an emotional interview with Nashville ABC news affiliate WKRN 2‘s reporter Stephanie Langston, Fritchley’s parents described him “as a peaceful soul who wasn’t afraid to be himself. “He didn’t care, or at least we thought he didn’t care, and that’s what’s really difficult for us because we thought he didn’t care,” his parents said as they teared up. Eli painted his nails, loved the color pink and wore the same SpongeBob sweatshirt nearly every day. “I think probably because he was in the same clothes every single day that they used that as a weapon,” his mom Debbey explained, saying he loved doing the laundry and cleaning his clothes every day. His parents told Langston that their son was not accepted by his peer group at the school. “He was told because he didn’t necessarily have a religion and that he said he was gay that he was going to go to Hell. They told him that quite often,” said Debbey. His parents heard his cries but didn’t realize the extent of the pain that the youth was experiencing adding that their son never blamed anyone. “It was really abusive. I don’t think it was ever physical. I think it was just words, but words hurt. They really hurt,” said his father, Steve.
SouthFloridaGayNews.com
“This has just blindsided us. This is something we would have never, ever expected,” his mother added. “That’s been really hard. That image was terrible until we got to hold him yesterday. Now that image is gone because the only thing we could think of yesterday when we were kissing and loving on him was how angelic he looked. He absolutely looked angelic. He’s just an angel,” she cried adding, “We all failed him. We all failed him. It’s as simple as that.” The parents told Langston that they are determined to stop bullying adding that they hope that raising awareness will ensure that other kids or their parents go through the heartache they are experiencing. “I honestly think education, education, education for everyone where bullying is concerned because it is a problem, not just in Bedford County. It’s a problem everywhere,” they said. According to WKRN 2, “the Fritchleys were regulars at Penalties Sports Bar & Grill in Shelbyville. The owners of the restaurant, Rob and Shondelle Lewis, say they are like family and they are heartbroken over the loss of Eli. In an effort to help, they created a Gofundme as the Fritchleys are looking to start a foundation to bring awareness and help educate people about bullying and suicide awareness.” “I hope and pray, this unfortunate event we are going to make something of it. We’ve got to. We are going to come up with some sort of antibullying program through this GoFundMe page where I pray to God this will not happen

again,” said Rob.” The Trevor Project’s 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health examined depression and suicide risk among LGBTQ youth from rural areas and small towns compared to urban and suburban areas. The Key Finding was that nearly half of LGBT youth in rural areas and small towns reported that their community was somewhat or very unaccepting of LGBT people compared to just over a quarter of those in urban and suburban areas. The data also shows that LGBT youth living in rural areas and small towns had slightly greater odds of depression and attempting suicide.

unch may be the most underrated meal of the day. Often scarfed down over your desk while working, it can be nothing more than a refueling stop to get you through the day. But it’s a meal that should be enjoyed, with good friends and delicious entrées. Now, after nearly two years, a group is ready to “do lunch” together again. SilverServe Lunches are restarting Dec. 10 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and continuing on the 2nd Friday of the month going forward.
“THE RESPONSES WERE OVERWHELMING IN FAVOR OF ATTENDING.” - Lisa Peters DIRECTOR OF SENIOR SERVICES
“The luncheon serves LGBT seniors in the community,” Lisa Peters said. As SunServe’s director of Senior Services, she knows it’s important for seniors to get out and be part of the community. “A couple of months ago as the booster shot was readily available to the senior population, I sent out a survey if the seniors who have attended this event in the past would be willing to attend now live and in person. The responses were overwhelming in favor of attending.” SunServe gets donors to sponsor the lunch, and the menu changes each month as they work with local restaurants. The luncheons have been on hiatus since COVID hit in March 2020. Like before, lunch is served at ArtServe at 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Besides catching up with friends, they also discuss relevant topics, such as medical marijuana and how to have sex after hip surgery. The lunch is free, but people are asked to register so volunteers can know how much food to prepare. Peters is looking forward to lunch as much as the participants. “I have missed my seniors and am so excited about seeing them again this week.”

PRINCIPAL FIRED OVER PRIDE FLAG SUES
School Principal Mary Kay Thomas was removed from her position after displaying a large pride flag in the Marshall Middle School cafeteria in Minnesota. There were 30 other flags displayed to represent other countries as well as tribal flags and the autism flag. Parents and local clergy were outraged by the presence of the Pride flag and urged Thomas to remove it; she refused to. Afterward, she was removed as principal and given a position that had not previously existed in the school district, the Star Tribune reported. Prior to being removed, Thomas had also given out pride stickers to the school’s gay-straight alliance club. “Plenty of former students reached out and said, ‘Thank you — if that flag was there when I was there, I would have

had a much better life,’” Thomas said. “I only regret that I didn’t do it sooner.” Thomas is filing a civil lawsuit against the school district that alleges a hostile climate, that board members had been heard saying anti-gay slurs, and that board members had made sexual advances towards Thomas.
OREGON GAY WORKER SUES HOSPITAL
Brett Goodman, a gay maintenance worker for Oregon State Hospital, is suing the facility and alleging that he was harassed and discriminated against by five of his co-workers because of his sexual orientation. Goodman’s suit also alleges he was assigned to clean restrooms as retribution for speaking out about his treatment, according to the Lund Report. A spokeswoman for the hospital said they would not comment on the case. He had been an employee since 2016, but in 2020 told a co-worker that he was gay. Court records say that the coworker “seemed shocked” by Goodman’s disclosure. The lawsuit alleges that after this, the co-worker “started physically assaulting [Goodman]” and referred to him using vulgar language.

Goodman went to Human Resources and other hospital resources to report the treatment. During this time, hospital managers removed him from his typical duties and made him responsible for cleaning bathrooms and trash removal. The lawsuit says that Goodman had the free-speech right to come out to his coworkers and the retaliation he has received is unlawful. The lawsuit does not specify the damages that are being sought.

TRANS WOMAN MURDERED, SUSPECT IS AWAITING TRIAL
Cris Blehar, a 65-year-old woman from Kentucky, was fatally shot in May. She has been identified as a transgender woman, making her the 49th trans victim of violence in 2021. Blehar had been killed on May 19 in Meade County, and Tyler Petty, 18, has been charged with her murder. Petty is scheduled to go on trial for the crime in June. Police say that Petty may have worked for Blehar, the Advocate reported. She was an Air Force veteran and a former employee of Continental Airlines. Mark Stephens, her cousin, reported her as trans to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and said that Blehar should be “remembered, honored, and counted.” “Whether it was her military service, her 20+ year career in the airline industry, or her post-retirement decision to buy

a farm and start a family of her own. She lived life to the fullest and wanted everyone around her to live their best life as well,” Stephens told the HRC. Blehar also had a son, Maverick Thompson. “Cris was an amazing mother and a wonderful person. She had so much love and brought a smile to many,” Thompson said.
TENNESSEE ADOPTION AGENCY SUES OVER ANTI-DISCRIMINATION RULE
The Holston United Methodist Home for Children in Tennessee filed a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in federal court. It alleges that the anti-discrimination rule that bans foster programs from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation violates their rights, LGBTQ Nation reported. The home and others like it are subject to this rule because they receive federal funding. The lawsuit says, “It would substantially burden Holston Home’s exercise of its religious beliefs to knowingly engage in child-placing activities in connection with couples who may be romantically cohabitating but not married, or who are couples of the same biological sex.” The regulation was put in place by

the Obama administration. However, the Trump administration allowed exemptions for religious beliefs. The Biden administration is no longer providing those exemptions. LGBT advocates argue that discrimination based on sexual orientation puts religious beliefs over the welfare of children.

PEOPLE IN INDIA FIGHT FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY
BEARDED MARY APPEARS ON QUEER MAGAZINE
Same-sex marriages should not be recognized under the Hindu Marriage Act, according to a petition filed in the Delhi High Court on Friday, since any action by a “secular state” in the subject would be an “intrusion into the religious rights of Hindus.” According to The Indian Express, any “change in marriage processes” must either apply to all citizens “irrespective of faith” or be limited to those types of weddings that are regarded as a “civil contract” rather than a “religious rite.” At least eight outstanding applications in the High Court seek to legalize samesex weddings in India under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act, and the Foreign Marriage Act. According to Fox News, Riccardo Simonetti, a German native, wore a white robe, a blue-head veil, and held a baby doll portraying Jesus on the cover of Siegessäule Magazine, an LGBT community magazine published in Berlin. The activist shared the photographs on Instagram. “Why not think the Virgin Mary had a beard if we overlook the fact that Jesus wasn’t white?” he wrote. “I would like to encourage you to get tested, know your status and fight the stigma that HIV positive people still have to deal with,” Simonetti wrote.

In a rare show of unanimity in Canada’s parliament, legislators passed a motion outlawing the discredited practice of “conversion therapy.” The opposition Conservatives’ unexpected proposal to fast-track the legislation drew plaudits in the House of Commons on Wednesday. A handful of Liberal cabinet ministers hugged their Conservative colleagues after the vote. “I dream of the day when LGBTQ2 issues are no longer political footballs. And we are one day closer to that future,” said Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault, who is gay, according to The Guardian. IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE G Pansexual
CELEBRITY CHEF COMES OUT AS PANSEXUAL Somizi Mhlongo, a popular media personality and celebrity chef, has come out as pansexual. The star, who has always identified himself as a member of the LGBT community, made the announcement on “The Braai Show with Cassper Nyovest.” While on the show, Mhlongo shared that he is “tired of the public’s curiosity regarding his sexuality.” “I was transparent from the onset. I hate always explaining myself. I am not gay, I am a pansexual, I am attracted to whoever I’m attracted to at the time. So even if I meet a beautiful woman now, I’d date her,” he said. Mhlongo is currently celebrating both his coming out and the announcement that his book “Dinner at Somizi’s: I am Not A Chef” has been nominated for the international Gourmand Awards for 2022.

‘BENEDETTA’ TELLS THE TRUE STORY OF LESBIAN NUNS
“Benedetta,” a new film that was released Dec. 3, examines the case of Benedetta Carlini, a nun who is in a sexual relationship with another nun. The film is loosely based on the scholarly work “Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy” by Judith C. Brown. The film touches on many lesbian stereotypes and even touches on the older practice of conversion therapy. The main character, Benedetta, is told “Your worst enemy is your body” and that it’s “better to not feel too at home in it.” The film is getting mixed reviews as many people think some parts are too “campy” for it to be taken seriously. The movie is currently being shown strictly in theaters, but will hit the streaming services in January.

Lia Thomas, a 22-year-old transgender swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania, is on a current streak of breaking the women’s records at the school. Prior to her transition, Thomas competed for three years at Penn. “[Swimming] is a huge part of my life and who I am. I’ve been a swimmer since I was 5 years old,” Thomas said in an interview with Penn Today. “The process of coming out as being trans and continuing to swim was a lot of uncertainty and unknown around an area that’s usually really solid. Realizing I was trans threw that into question. Was I going to keep swimming? What did that look like?” As Thomas continues to break records, more and more people are speaking out, upset that she gets to compete in the female division. “Well of course women’s records are being smashed!” tweeted Chicago-based sports performance coach Linda Blade. “Lia competed as male for first three years in #NCAA. to #SexBasedSports! #SexNotGender to preserve fairness for female athletes.” Thomas most recently broke the 200-meter freestyle and 500-meter freestyle records and said, “Being trans has not affected my ability to do this sport and being able to continue is very rewarding.”

She was shot inside her apartment in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Nov. 11, as reported by CBS Pittsburgh, who deadnamed her. Thompson’s loved ones said she had a “lovely and entrepreneurial spirit” and a “zest for life.” “I am deeply saddened to hear of the murder of Danyale Thompson and another trans sister stolen from us,” said Victoria Kirby York, NBJC deputy executive director. “This violence feels endless. How many people do we need to lose? … The trans community is enduring a silent epidemic of violence, which must end. There is so much that those of us who are not transgender can do to advocate for and invite changes that improve life outcomes and opportunities for transgender people. “We should all be very proud of our progress.” Three years ago Fort Lauderdale enacted a human rights ordinance that banned discrimination against the LGBT community in the area’s employment, housing, and public accommodation. Meanwhile Hollywood rose from 83 to 100 this year while this was Wellington’s first year on the list earning a perfect score as well.
The cities outside of South Florida to receive perfect scores include Orlando, St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Tallahassee. All of the ranked cities in Florida either improved their scores over last year, or their scores stayed the same. Hialeah fell at the bottom of the list in South Florida with a score of 44, but even that was an improvement from its 2020 score of 40.

BACCARAT TARGETS QUEER, MINORITY-OWNED SMALL BUSINESS IN TRADEMARK REQUEST Christiana Lilly
A
fter almost 12 years of creating perfumes and oils under her company Black Baccara, Kalliope Amorphous decided to make it official and file for a trademark back in December 2020.
She was shocked when Baccarat, a multimillion-dollar crystal company, sent a ceaseand-desist letter on Oct. 27 opposing her trademark request. “It’s a classic example of trademark bullying,” she told SFGN. “There are no similarities between this luxury brand and myself whatsoever.” Amorphous sells perfume and oils with witchy themes topping out at $160; Baccarat sells crystal pieces costing tens of thousands of dollars. In the cease-and-desist letter, the company claims, “Consumers will most likely make confusion between your goods commercialized until the trademark Black Baccara and our client’s goods.” A New York-based artist and small business owner, Amorphous has spent the last month dealing with the case and has hired a lawyer to fight the more than 250-year-old French luxury brand. She said she offered to compromise with Baccarat by moving her trademark request to another category or

even rescind her request altogether, but they wouldn’t budge. Baccarat has not replied to a request for comment from SFGN. Gwen Acker Wood, Ph.D. Esq., a Pittsburgh patent attorney representing Amorphous, explained that large companies will target smaller ones for trademark requests for two reasons: they don’t want their own name diluted in the marketplace and publicity. For example, Acker Wood recently reached a settlement with Apple when her client, a small indie-pop band called Candy Apple Blue, was targeted by the technology brand. Another artist, Franki Pineapple, was also targeted. “They want to sweep the landscape clean of anyone that could possibly come near their famous mark in their field of use,” she explained. As Acker Wood works on Amorphous’ case, what she finds odd is that of the 12 registrations that are alive under the Baccarat name, they chose not to agree to leave her alone.” include the class in the - Gwen Acker Wood When the Small Business cease in desist that Black PH.D., ATTORNEY Saturday happened last weekend, Baccara falls under. Jesse’s Journal
DISTURBING THE CHILD A MODERN HISTORY OF BOOK-BANNING Jesse Monteagudo
B
ook burning is as old as books themselves. People in power always felt a need to control what their subjects read. For centuries libraries have been destroyed by religious or political fanatics who did not like the material that was in them. Until recently the Roman Catholic Church published an index of prohibited books that listed titles that the Church did not want Catholics to read. Totalitarian regimes like the Third Reich and the Soviet Union suppressed reading material (and their authors) for all sorts of reasons. Even the United States, with our tradition of free expression, constantly banned books, mostly to save us from “obscenity” or “pornography.” Anthony Comstock’s New York Society for the Suppression of Vice was the most famous book banning group in our history, but there were others. LIFESTYLE TWO GUYS AND A DOG
WHEN THINGS CHANGE Brian McNaught

B
ack in the ‘80s and ‘90s, there was a charismatic educator/author named John Bradshaw on Public Television. He helped popularize the notion of the “wounded child within.” On one segment of his program, he enabled me to better understand the impact of change on a family and among friends. Using a hanging mobile as his prop, John showed how every piece was in balance, each counting on the other to pull its weight, and stay put. But once you removed one of the hanging objects the others were jolted into a spasm of change until they eventually found a new balance. My older sister’s recent death, for instance, altered the balance of her three children, their spouses, and her six grandchildren. It also impacted the relationships of her siblings, making me now the oldest, whatever that might entail. I don’t know what balance we’ll find, but it will be different from what it has been for many, many years. Change is a condition of living, but most change goes unnoticed, or takes little time to be embraced as the new normal. But other change alters lives in dramatic ways, leaving us gasping for air and some semblance of balance. When a person, regardless of their sexual orientation, becomes single through death or divorce, their social life changes. They are less likely to be invited to do things they often did as a couple. If friends are planning a group vacation, for instance, the newly single person is less likely to be asked to come along. The friendships they once had are no longer in balance. When someone quits drinking, it can have a huge impact on their relationships with others. Having a sober person present might make the heavy drinkers feel uncomfortable. By becoming clean and sober, you changed the balance you once had with these people. While they may admire you, you’re different now, and some feel you’ll be a downer. The same is true if you are in recovery and start drinking or drugging again. Your clean and sober friends are likely to feel less comfortable with you in social settings. If left alone, everything will find a new balance. That is the pattern of nature. But it can’t be forced. It takes time, patience, and perseverance to find equilibrium after a significant change takes place in our lives. But, it’s not necessarily a bad thing that the mobile of life has been altered. As a newly single person, you may mourn the loss of what you once knew and thoroughly enjoyed, but a whole new way of being in the world is now available to you. There are new friends to make and enjoy, and new interests to be pursued. If you don’t move forward, it may be because you’re completely focused on the way things used to be. Likewise, a newly sober person may not immediately trust that their life will find a happy, new balance, but given time it does. I speak from experience.
IF LEFT ALONE, EVERYTHING WILL FIND A NEW BALANCE. THAT IS THE PATTERN OF NATURE. BUT IT CAN’T BE FORCED.

Finding balance is a choice that requires action, and wisdom. Who and how we bring other people into our hanging mobile shouldn’t be rushed. It requires an open mind and a commitment to living happily. We all have stories to tell about how we lost our balance, about friends and family members who died, about coming out, about the pain that accompanies loss. We may not be aware that the new balance we found within ourselves and in the company of new people ever would have happened if change hadn’t taken place. Is it possible to help others adjust to significant changes in their lives, such as their parents divorcing, losing their job, learning that their spouse is transgender, or being no longer welcome in the home of former best friends? Yes, of course, but the timing has to be right, and they have to want the help. The best way to guide others through the anxiety, fear, sadness, and anger of unwanted change is to model your ability to reframe and create happiness in new ways. I employ successfully the mantra, “I’m just here.” It centers me in an emotional storm. It means, “I’m fully
present to this moment and to no others, because the past is over and the future doesn’t yet exist. I’m just where I need to be, and I have everything I need.” The Serenity Prayer also always helps me through a crisis. “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” I need to accept the things I can’t change, such as my sister’s death, change the things that I can, such as finding new friends after the breakup of a close friendship, and know the difference between acceptance and acquiescence. Change in my life status doesn’t make me a victim. I choose how I perceive things. Many of us live in a fast-paced world in which slowing down doesn’t feel right. We have multiple responsibilities, with many people relying on us to be fully present. But when we get the wind knocked out of us by a sudden, unwanted change, when we find ourselves in an emotional tailspin, we need to step back, breathe, find solace in our friendships, and in nature, and give ourselves time to bring balance back into our lives. We do that moment by moment by being present to our feelings and to our new reality.

LIFESTYLE READING WITH PRIDE
THE ‘KEY’ TO LGBT LOVE Aurora Dominguez
I
f you’re interested in LGBT slow-burn romances, then “The Key to You and Me” by Jaye Robin Brown is the book for you.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR MOST RECENT NOVEL? “The Key to You and Me” ended up in a very different place than where it started. One morning, my wife and I were debating who was going to get up and get the coffee and she said, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could teach dogs to bring you coffee?” This hypothetical question (yes, of course it would be great if dogs could bring you coffee) turned into me thinking about two teens with an errand business. Which then morphed into two teens driving elderly folks around in an Uber-type situation, which eventually turned into “The Key to You and Me.” Kat, the local girl, does do errands for cash which includes driving around horse girl, Piper. But those two elements, and the setting, are all that remain from the seed that started this book. (Side note: The initial working folder on my computer for this novel is titled Coffee Dogs.) Ultimately though, I think the main inspiration behind this novel was the need to write something light and fun and filled with romance after my grief-filled previous book, THE MEANING OF BIRDS. The horses were a bonus as I’ve tried to figure out for years how to work an equestrian into one of my stories.
WHAT CHARACTER IN THIS NOVEL DO YOU MOST RELATE TO AND WHY? I think most authors will tell you that there’s a piece of themselves in every character, or maybe that’s just true for me. I’m a bit like both Kat and Piper. Kat and I share Southern roots and a quiet way of observing the world. Like Piper, I’m an equestrian with a passion for riding and a readiness to take hold of good opportunities when they’re presented.
WHY DO YOU FEEL NOVELS WITH POWERFUL AND UNIQUE CHARACTERS ARE SO POPULAR AND HAVE SUCH A VOICE RIGHT NOW? Hmmm, this is an interesting question. I think for any character to lead you through an entire novel and keep you interested, they must be complex and relevant to something you’re seeking as a reader. That will be different for every reader, so what is unique to you, might not be to me. Same goes for power. To some that could mean literally wielding the superior sword, but to others ultimate power could be in quiet strength. So, I think powerful and unique characters are simply the characters that help you get completely immersed and taken away by a story. And that’s a timeless thing.

she’s not uninterested in romance, she’s just uninterested in boys. And though Piper thought she could never get over her ex-girlfriend back in MA, Kat is making her second-guess that thought. It’s a sweet, slow-burn romance in a small-town equestrian setting with laughs and a smidge of drama to keep you turning the pages.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU IN THE BOOKISH WORLD? Another excellent question. The pandemic really threw a kink into the writing machine for a while. Between doomscrolling the news and getting sucked into lesbian TikTok, I didn’t get many new words on the page. (I have since deleted the TikTok app because people are SO creative and you can sit down and then when you look up, three hours has gone by. Not a productive pastime for me.) I do have a middle-grade novel that I’m trying to decide what to do with and I’m 2/3 of the way into the first draft of an adult romance. This doesn’t mean I’m not coming back to YA at some point, but I needed to spread my creative wings a little bit and see where they took me.
WHO IS YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE WRITER? WHY?
PLEASE DESCRIBE THE CONTENT OF YOUR LATEST READ AND WHAT CAN READERS EXPECT FROM IT.
Oh geez. People have absolute favorites? Well let’s see. Of the books I’ve read recently, I really loved Sarah Gailey’s “Upright Women Wanted.” It’s about subversive queer librarians on horseback in the future that kind of resembles the past. Great voice and it made me happy. Malinda Lo’s book “Last Night At The Telegraph Club” is a super LGBT historical novel that looks at San Francisco in the 1950s. And for a light YA romance, I really loved Leah Johnson’s “You Should See Me in a Crown.” It was sweet and happy and featured two girls in love. In Middle Grade books, I thought Anne Blankman’s “The Blackbird Girls” was so interesting as it follows the lives of two girls after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster which is a subject matter I hadn’t seen in fiction.
“The Key to You and Me” is a dual POV young adult contemporary romance. Piper decides, at the behest of her equestrian grandmother, to come to NC for the summer to train with a former Olympic dressage rider. But there’s one catch: she has to get over her fear of driving. Kat, the local NC girl, is looking at a boring summer if she can’t get her beat-up old minivan fixed. When Piper’s grandmother offers the funds for the fix in exchange for Kat teaching Piper to drive, the game is on. It doesn’t take long for Kat to realize

QUICK AND EASY HOLIDAY APPS Rick Karlin

T
here’s so much going on during the holidays that you want everything quick and easy (which, coincidentally was my nickname back when I was single)! It’s the time of year when we’re hosting and/or invited to holiday parties and potlucks. These recipes are all easy to pull together and make a great impression.
VIBRANT GUACAMOLE
The problem with guacamole is that it turns brown so quickly. By adding some frozen peas to the recipe, it manages to stay bright green for 24 hours. INGREDIENTS 1 cup frozen peas, slightly thawed 2 medium avocados, peeled, pitted, and chopped Juice of two limes 1 cup grape tomatoes, quartered 1 red onion, minced 2 jalapeños, seeded and minced ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 cloves minced fresh garlic 1 teaspoon sea salt INSTRUCTIONS Place peas in the bowl of a food processor or mini chopper and pulse until the peas are smooth. Add avocado and pulse a few seconds until avocado is incorporated. Transfer pea/avocado mixture into a medium bowl and add lime juice, tomato, onion, jalapeño, cilantro, garlic, and salt. Stir everything together with a fork. Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
CHEESEBOARD SNOWMAN
No cooking required, just assemble this cute appetizer. INGREDIENTS 3 round, soft cheeses (camembert, brie, and goat are all good) Prosciutto Walnuts Toast rounds or crackers Dried fruit Pear or apple slices Lemon INSTRUCTIONS Line three cheese rounds up to resemble a snowman. Decorate using dried fruit bits for eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons. Drape a piece of prosciutto to look like a scarf. Garnish plate with remaining ingredients. Note: Soak the apple or pear slices in water and the juice of a lemon for a few minutes. Pat dry before arranging on a cheeseboard. This will keep the fruit from turning brown.

STUFFED MUSHROOMS
A great dish to bring when there will be vegetarians in the house. To make vegan, substitute vegan cream cheese. INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. (2 pkg.) white or cremini whole mushrooms ¼ cup olive oil 1 shallot 2 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons fresh parsley ½ cup chopped pecans 1 cup panko breadcrumbs 1 lb. goat or cream cheese (room temperature) INSTRUCTIONS Clean mushrooms by wiping them down with a damp paper towel. Remove stems, set aside, and brush mushroom caps inside and out with olive oil. Place mushroom caps on a rack in a sheet pan. Chop mushroom stems, shallot, garlic, and parsley; place in a mixing bowl. Add pecans and half the breadcrumbs. Add cheese and mix until all are combined. Spoon cheese mixture into mushroom cap, until it just reaches the top of the cap. Sprinkle remaining breadcrumbs over the stuffed caps. The above steps can all be done up to 24 hours in advance. Preheat an oven to 350°. Bake for 20 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and breadcrumbs have browned slightly.
PIG IN A BLANKET WREATH
A cute variation on a favorite appetizer. INGREDIENTS 3 tubes crescent biscuits 1 lb. cocktail franks or smokies Honey mustard 1 egg, beaten Coarse sea salt or poppy seeds (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS Open the crescent roll tubes and separate rolls into triangles. Lightly brush with honey mustard. Place a hot dog or smokie link at the base of the triangle of dough

and roll it up. Place each biscuit next to the other in a wreath shape, making two concentric rings. Brush the entire wreath with beaten egg. Sprinkle with sea salt or poppy seeds, if desired. Bake according to crescent roll directions, 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.
SPRIGS IN A BLANKET
A fancier version of pigs in a blanket, but just as easy to make. INGREDIENTS 24 asparagus spears (thin) 24 slices prosciutto 1 pkg. puff pastry 1 beaten egg Parmesan cheese
EASY ASIAN MEATBALLS
Only two ingredients and one baking dish make this a snap to prepare. It’s always a big hit at any party. INGREDIENTS 1 package frozen meatballs 1 bottle Thai Asian sweet chili sauce
INSTRUCTIONS Pre-heat oven to 350°. Rinse asparagus spears and cut off woody base (bottom third or so). Cut defrosted puff pastry into ½-inch-wide strips.
HUNGRY FOR MORE?
Cut the prosciutto strips in half lengthwise. Wrap the prosciutto around the asparagus in a spiral fashion. Repeat with puff pastry dough. Place wrapped asparagus on a rack in a sheet pan. Brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until pastry is golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before transferring to a serving plate.
INSTRUCTIONS Place frozen meatballs in an oven-proof baking dish. Pour about half a bottle of the chili sauce over the meatballs. Use a spoon to mix and distribute sauce easily. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Before serving add additional sauce if necessary.

Ask any gay man which “Golden Girls” character he resembles most and you’ll almost always get “Blanche.” Now, that’s obviously driven by vanity, a little wishful thinking or he’s just a slut. There’s little argument that the 1980s sitcom shaped modern gay culture — reruns have been broadcast ad nauseum on multiple cable networks since the show ended in 1992 — and inspired plenty of drag parodies, but is South Florida ready for two more? One even involves puppets! The Golden Gays, New York City-based thespians who have hitched their careers to the shoulder-padded septuagenarian roommates, present “Thank Yule for Being a Friend” through Dec. 19 at Island City Stage, 2304 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. “Before traveling to spend the holidays with their families, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose participate in a golden gift exchange full of hilarious surprises. Just as they get to the airport a winter storm blows in, leaving them trapped! In an unexpected Charles Dickens twist of events, the three grannies must visit their pasts, present, and future to save Christmas … just in time for ‘Turkey Lurkey,’” promise the program notes. Tickets are $35 – 45 at TheGoldenGaysNYC.com. If closely shaved men in wigs portraying the Golden Girls isn’t your thing, head to West Palm Beach and see the ladies portrayed in real fur — puppet fur, that is. “That Golden Girls Show! — A Puppet Parody” is coming to the Rinker Playhouse at the Kravis Center through Dec. 12. This troupe — also based out of New York — will reenact your favorite classic episodes a la “Avenue Q” realness. (That means the actors-slash-puppeteers are right there, so just ignore them.) Get set for an evening of cheesecake, laughter, jazzercise, puppet sex talk and the elegant art of the quick-witted put down. It will be just like tuning in to the show on TVLand, Lifetime or the streaming service of your choice. Tickets start at $49 at Kravis.org.
BUT, IT’S ART!
From events to local announcements, fun facts and so much more, the Islander is everything you need to wake up ready for a beautiful day in the Island City.
Even in the darkest days of winter (not that it’s all that dark or cold in South Florida), you can always count on local theater producer Ronnie Larsen for a few cheap thrills. The dirty mind behind “Making Porn” and “The Penis Talk Show” is turning The Foundry, 2306 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors, into an art studio complete with nude models. The first session was a sellout, and he’s hosting aspiring artists and admirers of the male physique back on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. Following demonstrations by actual artists Greg Lindeblom and Tom Menninger, the audience will get their hand at the easel.

WICK HOLIDAY CABARET IS GIFT TO SOUTH FLORIDA AUDIENCES J.W. Arnold
“A
Winter Spectacular,” the holiday cabaret currently playing at the Wick Theatre and Costume Museum in Boca Raton, is a priceless musical gift to South Florida audiences, wrapped in a shiny package with a big red bow. Marilynn Wick, founder and executive producer, is a stickler for detail, and the stage for her holiday extravaganza is literally set in the exquisitely decorated lobby, complete with a full-sized antique sleigh and lit with a stand of twinkling Christmas trees. But the true magic was to be found inside the theater. Cabaret legend Marilyn Maye commanded the equally festive stage with an upbeat mix of holiday favorites and jazz standards, backed up by a live band. A rainbow-themed medley of “Over the Rainbow” and “Rainbow Connection” soon led into “Golden Rainbow,” in an up-tempo arrangement from her best-selling album “Super Singer.” In keeping with the Christmas theme, she whipped through “Winter Wonderland,” accompanied by a quartet of tween-aged singers and dancers, and a medley of “White Christmas,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Mistletoe and Holly.” At 93 and the record-holder for most appearances on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” Maye is the reigning queen of cabaret, still maintaining a busy schedule of appearances at swanky jazz clubs like Michael Feinstein’s 54 Below and the Rainbow Room. For this engagement, Wick also booked the rising “prince” of cabaret, Nicholas King, who first won over South Florida audiences last year, performing in a socially distanced setting in the theater lobby during reopening. King may be young enough to be Maye’s grandson (his first professional gig was 25 years ago as “Chip” in “Beauty and the Beast” on Broadway), but he clearly would have held his own in an earlier generation, channeling the stylings of the Rat Pack for his opening set with “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and “Sleigh Ride,” both sung to cool ‘60s bossa nova rhythms. And just one day after composer Stephen Sondheim passed away, King offered a moving tribute to the composer — along with some subtle social commentary — by

singing “Children will Listen” from “Into the Woods.” It’s safe to say the future of cabaret is in good hands with King’s vocal skills and buoyant personality. He’s even a pretty decent tap dancer, the audience soon discovered. Both singers offered inspired performances throughout the two-hour program, accompanied by pianist Rich Switzer and guitarist Rod Fleeman, with Jaime Ousley on bass and Frank Derrick on drums, all shining in each and every masterfully crafted arrangement. Each musical number was tastefully punctuated by animated videos designed by Josieu T. Jean and projected behind the musicians. “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” proved to be the perfect closing for this holiday treat that dishes up a healthy serving of Christmas, a little Hannukah and plenty of old-fashioned standards. If you’re still looking for the perfect present for a music lover in the family, skip the gift cards and reserve your tickets to “A Winter Spectacular” at the Wick today.
“A Winter Spectacular,” starring Marilyn Maye and Nicholas King, is being performed through Dec. 19 at the Wick Theatre and Costume Museum, 7901 N. Federal Hwy. in Boca Raton. Tickets start at $75 at TheWick.org.

A&E THEATER
‘THE PROM’ DANCES INTO THE BROWARD CENTER J.W. Arnold
I
t’s not unusual for Broadway hits to be adapted for the big screen. The list is long, including classics like “The Sound of Music,” “My Fair Lady” and “The Music Man;” box office smashes like “Chicago,” “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Misérables;” contemporary hits like “Rent” and “In the Heights;” misfires like “Rock of Ages” and “Cats;” and even the eagerly anticipated Stephen Spielberg remake of “West Side Story.” In most cases, the shows had become wellknown and toured the world before film cameras called. Such was not the case with “The Prom,” the 2019 Drama Desk awardwinning musical that managed only a short 309-performance run on Broadway. But the show did capture the eye of director Ryan Murphy, who just made a big deal with Netflix to develop all sorts of film and television projects. “The Prom” was fast-tracked through production and began streaming last year while theaters were still shuttered due to COVID-19. Despite an A-list cast including Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, KeeganMichael Key and Kerry Washington, Murphy’s adaptation met with mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Despite strong LGBT themes — more on that later — the casting of a straight actor (Corden) playing gay seemed to dominate the reviews and online discourse. Now that performance venues are reopened across the country, audiences have an opportunity to discover the charming show, and the touring production of “The Prom” is making a South Florida stop at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale, Dec. 14 – 19. If you are one of the millions of Americans who aren’t familiar with the story, here’s how it goes: In the small town of Edgewater, Indiana, PTA President Mrs. Greene announces that the James Madison High School prom will be canceled because a student named Emma Nolan wanted to bring a girl to the dance, much to the dismay of Principal Tom Hawkins, who supports Emma but is powerless to oppose the PTA’s decision. Meanwhile in New York City, a quartet of narcissistic, down-on-their-luck Broadway stars realizes they need a cause to revitalize their careers. After finding Emma’s story on Twitter, the actors drive to Indiana on a bus

with the cast of Godspell, determined to fight for the teen. Despite themselves, the actors succeed in throwing Emma the prom she deserves and enlighten the community. Like the characters they play, the cast of the touring production includes many LGBT and gender-fluid performers. Jordan Alexander is a young queer man who grew up in a rural Ohio town, not unlike Edgewater. After college, he moved to New York City and began working immediately. He didn’t get a chance to see the show on stage, but did see the movie before joining the company. “I think the show lives, the way it’s translated on the stage.” Alexander explained. “It just makes me want to get up and dance, laugh, cry, feel every emotion … hopefully [audiences leave] questioning the beliefs they had beforehand — whether they relate more to the people of the town or the Broadway people.” The Broward Center is only the third stop for the company after opening in Cleveland and then moving to Orlando. “The audiences have been so amazing. We just feed off of them, the laughter and the reactions. When we were in tech rehearsals in Kentucky, we were performing before an empty house, but then we stepped in front of the audience for the first time and it brought life to the show,” he said. As for audiences, Alexander challenged them: “I would be prepared to laugh, be prepared to cry and experience all of your feelings. The show has a lot of heart and when it comes down to it, the show is about love, acceptance and tolerance.”
