Glee’s Cory Monteith Dies of Drug Overdose

Monteith served as the show’s resident hunk with a heart of gold “Glee” actor Cory Monteith died of an overdose of heroin and alcohol, the British Columbia coroner’s office said on July 16.

“There is no evidence to suggest Mr. Monteith’s death was anything other than a most tragic accident,” the office said in a statement.

The 31-year-old was found dead in his Vancouver, British

Columbia, hotel room on Saturday, after he didn’t check out on time. He was believed to be alone when he died.

Police said Monteith had been out with people earlier, but video and electronic records from the hotel indicated he returned to his room by himself early Saturday.

Monteith’s death recalled the

lives of Heath Ledger, Corey Haim and River Phoenix – actors who battled substance abuse and died in their 20s and 30s.

Monteith had talked bluntly about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, calling it a serious problem and telling Parade magazine in 2011 he was “lucky to be alive.”

Prominent Gay Rights Activist Killed in Cameroon Associated Press A rights group says a prominent gay rights activist in Cameroon has been tortured and killed just weeks after issuing a public warning about the threat posed by “antigay thugs.”

Human Rights Watch said Tuesday that friends discovered the body of Eric Ohena Lembembe at his home in the capital, Yaounde, on Monday evening after he was unreachable for two days.

One friend said Lembembe’s neck and feet looked broken and that he had been burned with an iron.

Lembembe was executive director of CAMFAIDS, a human rights organization.

In a July 1 statement, he condemned recent break-ins by “anti-gay thugs” at the offices of groups advocating for gay rights.

The precise motive for Lembembe’s killing was unclear Tuesday. HRW urged officials to launch a thorough investigation.

+Arrested! Former Porn/Reality Star for Sexual Battery (EDGE) -- The handsome housemate from the 2011 season of MTV’s popular reality show “The Real World, Las Vegas,” and a former gay porn actor, was arrested for sexual battery Saturday night in Lafayette, La., according to TMZ. Dustin Zito was arrested outside a bar and cops say the reality/gay-forpay porn actor allegedly tried to reach up a woman’s skirt and touch her inappropriately. The woman reported Zito to the police.

When the authorities came to the scene, Zito violently resisted the arrest, forcing cops to use pepper spray on him in order to take him into custody.

Zito was charged with sexual battery and resisting an officer violently. His court date is scheduled for July 16.

In 2011, it was revealed that Zito was an adult model for Fratmen.TV and FratPad, which streams videos of handsome young men living together in Los Angeles, who also happen to

have gay sex with each other. Zito went under the name “Spencer” and apparently was involved with the sites for four years.

“He once lived in the house featured on Fratpad, a live webcam site in which he and other men engage in sexual activities with one another, though he stresses that he is straight and did this purely for a living, and he hopes to put that past behind him,” Wikipedia writes about Zito.

+ Majority Favor Gay Marriage in Virginia

(CNN) -- A new poll indicates half of voters in Virginia support same-sex marriage, which was banned in the commonwealth by constitutional amendment in 2006.

Results from a Quinnipiac University survey released Thursday showed exactly 50 percent of registered voters in the commonwealth saying they support allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. Forty-three percent oppose such marriages.

Sharp differences in support persist among different political affiliations – 68 percent of Democrats support same-sex marriage while 68 percent of Republicans oppose it. Women, white voters, and those with college degrees are also more likely to say they approve of allowing same sex couples to marry.

The Virginia constitution was amended in 2006 to define marriage as between a man and a woman. At the time 57 percent of Virginia voters backed the change.

With June’s Supreme Court decisions striking down a key portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, as well as a ruling allowing same-sex marriages to go forward in California, challenges are expected against individual state bans preventing gay and lesbian couples from marrying.

In this year’s battle for Virginia governor, Democrat Terry McAuliffe has retained his advantage over Republican rival Ken Cuccinelli, according to the poll.

( AP) -- Britain on July 17 legalized gay marriage after Queen Elizabeth II gave her royal stamp of approval, clearing the way for the first same-sex weddings next summer.

Lawmakers cheered as House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said royal assent had been given — one day after the bill to legalize same-sex marriage in England and Wales cleared Parliament.

The queen’s approval was a formality and is the last step necessary for a bill to become law. The law enables gay couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales, although the Church of England is barred from conducting same-sex unions. It also will allow couples who had previously entered into civil partnerships — which carry similar rights and responsibilities to marriage — to convert their relationships to marriage.

The British government introduced the bill in January.

Prime Minister David Cameron had backed it, but it divided his Conservative Party and touched off strident debates in the House of Commons and House of Lords.

‘Fuck Smarter’ ACT UP shakes it up during NYC Pride with its provocative message Jacob Long Unhampered by political obligations or fears of losing funding, ACT UP New York can do things like start an AIDS education campaign whose official message is to “Fuck Smarter!

Fight Harder! FIGHT AIDS!” Since 1987, ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) has been completely volunteer-driven and private — an effort to stand up against the seeming indifference to AIDS that the federal government and big pharma were displaying then. On Sunday, July 1, the 26-year-old organization marched the streets of New York City and handed out Fuck Smarter Toolkit, complete with lube, stickers and informative flyers. In all, about 5,000 packets were handed out.

“In 30+ years of the AIDS epidemic, LGBT people have seen our communities ravaged

by HIV. Today, we have prevention tools like Pre- and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP), but we have to take more responsibility for our sexual health as a community,” said longtime ACT UP member Jim Eigo in a statement. “We cannot surrender half of a new generation to the virus that stole so many from the last.”

If the offensive language is disagreeable with anyone, it likely won’t affect the goings on at ACT UP, where a separation from sponsors gives it an edge that non-profits lack — full sovereignty.

“One of the advantages to having an org that is staffed by volunteers and doesn’t have governmental contract is that there’s no leash on the work,” Eric Sawyer told SFGN. He’s one of the co-founders of ACT UP and has been a member since its inception.

“There’s no fear of losing funding or jobs — all the money is private and comes in through donations or fundraising. It allows us to speak truth to power without any filters or muzzles.”

Sawyer, whose day job is working for UN AIDS, explained that ACT UP has been responsible for making waves all over the country by putting pressure on pharmaceutical companies to release AIDS medications in a more efficient and a faster way.

What used to take over a decade, he said,

now take two or three years. Specifically, he pointed out as an example of ACT UP’s efforts — which have been covered in documentaries like “How to Survive a Plague,” which streams on Netflix — any person in New York who makes less than $42,000 a year is eligible for free medication.

“The AIDS crisis had been going on for a few years in New York, and the mayor and president weren’t talking about it,” said Brandon Cuicchi, ACT UP’s secretary. “A largely LGBT population started the group to protest the lack of response.”

And their recent demonstration was on par with the rest.

“We did what we set out to do. We wanted to hand out thousands of flyers, stickers and lube packets. I think we got the message across,” Cuicchi told SFGN. “We were happy to embrace slang and talk about sex in the way that everyday LGBT people talk about sex. We were glad to use the word ‘fuck.’”

According to ACT UP and the reason they held their recent demonstration: New statistics released by the CDC confirm that more than half of young gay men or MSM (men who have sex with men) and transgender women may be HIV-positive by age 50. In response to this clear threat to the queer community, ACT UP demands an end to the denial that has allowed nationwide HIV prevention budgets to be slashed for years.

Even locally, the NY Department of Health has been cutting prevention funding where it is needed most. New HIV statistics show that an African-American MSM is 6 times more likely to become infected with HIV than a white MSM. “We see local AIDS service organizations, like Gay Men of African Descent, that help underserved communities are having their budgets slashed by the city,” said member Annette Gaudino. “This lack of funding and an institutional denial about the realities of how LGBT people have sex are putting this new generation at risk.”

Some Gay-Rights Activists Not Happy With Focus On Marriage Critics say HIV and transgender rights have been ignored Associated Press

Even as it celebrates victories in the push for same-sex marriage, America’s gay-rights movement is experiencing self-criticism and internal divisions over its approach to other thorny issues.

Some activists say the nationwide marriage campaign, while worthwhile, has diverted energy and resources from causes that may be harder to market — such as rights for transgender people and advocacy to combat HIV and AIDS. “I wish we were spending a little more time working on these other issues and not just making marriage the centerpiece,” said Terry Stone of CenterLink, a nationwide coalition of more than 200 community centers that serve lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.

Stone said the latest survey of the community centers’ patrons found that their top concerns were anti-gay bullying at schools, transgender rights, HIV and AIDS issues, and the need for more laws against anti-gay discrimination in employment, housing and health care. Legal recognition for same-sex couples was fifth on the list, Stone said.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, voiced similar concerns.

“I am big fan of the work of the LGBT movement, but I’m really cynical about the prioritization within it,” she said.

“I worry about a movement that has so disproportionately prioritized marriage. …

It’s been a good tool for educating the rest of the public, but that’s the problem — it’s educating everyone else that marriage is all we care about.”

Same-sex marriage has indeed dominated the gay-rights agenda in the past few years, generating intensive news coverage, gaining steadily in public support, and proving to be a catalyst for successful fundraising drives.

Within a span of a few weeks in May and June, the number of states with legal samesex marriage grew from nine to 13, and the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a law that barred the federal government from recognizing such marriages.

Yet during the same period, leaders of many LGBT advocacy groups were conferring candidly on the need to re-energize the fight against AIDS and HIV, the virus that causes it.

A joint open letter issued in June, signed by 35 of the leaders, said that gay and

bisexual men, while comprising only about 2 percent of the U.S. population, accounted for more than 63 percent of new HIV infections in 2010. It said the rate is particularly high for young black gay men.

“Despite these alarming statistics, which have galvanized our community in the past, the HIV epidemic has seemed to fall by the wayside,” the letter said. “Many in our community have simply stopped talking about the issue. This must change.”

Among the groups signing the letter was Lambda Legal, which pursues litigation on a wide range of LGBT issues. The director of Lambda’s HIV Project, Scott Schoettes, said AIDS at one point had been a unifying issue for the gay community and now was a source of division — between those with good access to health care and those without it, and between those who are HIV-positive and those who aren’t.

“People don’t want to talk about disease, about death, about racial or socio-economic inequalities,” Schoettes said. “HIV is sometimes an inconvenient reminder of all those things. We need to press to make sure it continues to be a part of the agenda.”

Peter Staley, an activist in New York City, suggested in a June 28 column for the Washington Post that the gay-rights movement had become “so caught up in the giddiness of the marriage-equality movement that we’ve abandoned the collective fight against HIV and AIDS.” He suggested that major gay-rights organizations should reallocate their budgets so that 10 percent went to combating HIV and AIDS. “No one is asking to give up the fight for marriage equality,” Staley said in an interview.

“We are a strong community. We are capable of doing more than one thing at a time.”

Among grass-roots activists, a periodic target for criticism is the Human Rights Campaign — the largest and best-funded national gay-rights group, with an agenda that attempts to tackle a wide range of issues. Marriage is the HRC’s foremost priority at moment, as made clear in a new memo titled “What’s Next for the LGBT Civil Rights Movement,” and the group’s leaders are aware that this focus is not welcomed by some activists.

constituencies that don’t feel satisfied, and that’s completely legitimate. We can and should do better for them.”

Regarding HIV and AIDS, he said the advocacy on this issue had lost some effectiveness in recent years and suggested there was a need to develop new, positive messages about the cause. As for transgender rights, he said the HRC was committed to incorporating this into all of its programs and initiatives.

In one sign of that commitment, the HRC was quick to issue a public apology in March after a transgender activist was asked to remove a transgender-rights flag from behind the podium at a gay-marriage rally at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Maya Rupert, policy director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, noted that many transgender people in the past felt that major gay-rights groups were reluctant to fully embrace them as constituents.

“It would be unrealistic to say all of the problems that marginalized transgender issues have just disappeared,” Rupert said.

“But there’s been a conscious effort to make sure the movement is really focusing on the needs of transgender people.”

In one example of this, Lambda Legal recently announced the creation of a Transgender Rights Project.

Also, the organization formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation officially changed its name to GLAAD, saying it did not want a name that suggested any exclusion of transgender people. The change was accompanied by pledges to work harder on behalf of

transgender people, particularly in trying to raise public awareness about their lives.

Wilson Cruz, a GLAAD spokesman, said the organization also was ready to expand work on HIV and AIDS initiatives.

“We are very aware there seems to be a lack of focus on the issue,” he said.

Beyond HIV/AIDS, transgender rights and the continuing fight for same-sex marriage, several other challenging issues are on the gay-rights agenda.

Some activists are monitoring congressional debate on immigration reform, hoping that any changes will be fair to the many LGBT people who are in the U.S. illegally.

There also is keen interest in the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, a proposed federal bill which would prohibit employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The bill passed the 22-member Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee earlier this month with support from all the Democrats and three Republicans. However, it’s not clear whether GOP leaders in the House would allow the bill to come to a vote there.

Jon Davidson, legal director of Lambda Legal, said the fact that this bill remains in limbo illustrates the need for gay-rights groups to engage in broad-based advocacy that goes beyond same-sex marriage.

“It doesn’t help you so much if you can get married and then get fired because of that,” he said.

Funding Tomorrow: From ‘Scientific Curiosity’ to Reality Campbell Foundation focuses on ‘ground floor’ research projects that no else will touch Gideon Grudo

While it may now be a new diet phenomenon according to a June Yahoo article, Five On Two Off (or FOTO) actually peeked its head as one answer to the complications of taking AIDS meds so frequently.

“The weekends off felt like a good thing to identify in research since the patients wanted it, the drugs looked like they could handle it, and ultimately it might flex what we can do in terms of the comfort of treatment,” says Dr. Calvin Cohen. He’s the director of research at Boston’s Community Research Initiative (CRI). CRI did its research with partners across the country (including Miami’s Care Resource) to look into the possible drug “forgiveness” they were trying to eschew. And it worked.

And all of that research couldn’t have happened without a grant from Fort Lauderdale’s own Campbell Foundation, a non-profit group dedicated to funding research

that can have a real effect on AIDS patients (specifically within five to seven years).

Ken Rapkin, program officer at Campbell, told SFGN that FOTO had an immense effect by showing researchers across the globe that constant medication isn’t always the answer.

“The whole notion and the wisdom of the time said you could never go off medication or you might die,” he said. “It was pretty groundbreaking. It was a huge feather in the cone for everyone.”

But Campbell Foundation has done much more than fund FOTO. The organization is named after Richard Campbell Zahn, the chemist who brought you Herpecin-L lip balm. He incorporated Campbell Labs to sell the balm. But something was bothering him.

“He was so mad when he was alive that the government was ignoring AIDS,” said Bill Venuti, now the trustee at Campbell.

Venuti explained that Campbell had set aside money in 1986 for the very foundation that acts today, but the money couldn’t be touched until the chemist passed in 1995 from AIDS complications. “When he died, we knew we had to fund these scientists. It’s not sexy, but somebody has to start on those basic ideas. The parades are fun, but that’s

more applicable when you’re able to do that — we have to stick to the donor’s vision.”

And so, the foundation stepped up to the plate. Since 1995, the foundation has funded 126 sets of studies around the world.

Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA), for, example, ranked Campbell in the top 20th percentile for private philanthropic groups that focus on AIDS. The 25-year-old FCAA aims to “mobilize” philanthropic groups like Campbell by initiating them into action (and ranking them).

“We’ve given away over $9 million — to ideas that no one wanted to be a part of,” Ken Rapking told SFGN. “Women’s studies, children’s studies. Many times the government was too afraid to touch the more risky medications.”

Originally for Parkinson’s, the team wanted to find a way to get HIV meds in there, too. Campbell gave them over $86,000. Getting past the barrier allowed the team to find a way to send micro-medicine (put simply) directly into the brain (for more, check out this article from the Jerusalem Post).

“No drug company would have touched that,” Rapking said. “This is something that can change the make-up of drug delivery forever. amfAR gets some cash and hits gold In 2011, Campbell Foundation gave $50,000 to amfAR’s ARCHE program. This is the email that AmFAR sent Campbell when the organization had some success with ARCHE: Dear Mr. Rapkin, I am thrilled to share some exciting breaking news today in the search for a cure for HIV/ AIDS. Dr. Timothy Henrich, an amfAR grantee, has two patients who may have been cured of HIV. Dr. Henrich’s patients had been on long-term antiretroviral therapy for HIV when they developed lymphoma. To treat the cancer and possibly cure their HIV, they underwent risky stem-cell transplants. This treatment was similar to the one given to the “Berlin Patient,” Timothy Brown, who was the first man cured of HIV. Brown’s stem-cell donors had a genetic mutation called “CCR5 delta32” that renders a person virtually resistant to HIV infection. However, these new cases differ significantly from Brown’s: their donor cells lacked this mutation, and were therefore not resistant to HIV. Since the transplants, Dr. Henrich has been unable to find any evidence of HIV infection in his patients.

While stem-cell transplants cannot be widely used as a cure for the 34 million people living with HIV, this development is an important step that could lead to a new pathway to a cure. Poverello’s annual bowlathon is the organization’s longest-running charity event. After 23 years, the event name got an update, but the core principle is still there.

“One of our key missions moving forward is to communicate Poverello’s impact more clearly,” said Nathan Earl, Poverello’s Director of Development. “In essence, all participants are literally bowling to fight hunger in our community.”

On Saturday, Aug. 3, join Poverello and an estimated 300 bowlers for the 23rd annual event at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac. “This is the most we’ve ever had,” Earl said. To date, the event has raised more than $1 million.

The bowlathon moved last year from their previous spot, Manor Lanes in Wilton Manors, to accommodate all the participants.

Sawgrass has 56 lanes – the same amount of teams registered this year.

Poverello’s core mission is to provide hunger relief to those in need. The organization is first and foremost a food pantry that predominantly serves HIV/AIDS families at or below the poverty level. Basic living essentials are also provided along with nutrition.

Poverello also provides youth development programs, a jobs program, and a thrift store at their Wilton Manors headquarters.

For $25, each registrant gets three games of bowling, shoes, and transportation to and from Sawgrass Lanes on the “Hunger Fighter Tanks” – or the party buses.

After debating into the wee hours of the night on July 17, the Miami Beach City Commission chose South Beach ACE to redesign the 52-acre Miami Beach Convention Center, including the historic Jackie Gleason Theatre.

The $600 million price tag will be funded by public money from a county bond, an increased local hotel tax, and an extension of a special taxing district in South Beach, according to the Miami Herald. Residents will have the final say with a vote in November.

The design team wanted to return the theater to its former glory days of the 1950s, when it was used to film the Jackie Gleason Show and hosted major acts like The Dick Clark Show and The Ed Sullivan Show. This put them in favor to local theater lovers, which took to Facebook to encourage the commission to choose South Beach ACE over Portman CMC. The latter firm is partnered with multiple

performance companies, including Cirque du Soleil, and wanted to incorporate the act into the future of the theater. Opponents feared it would take over the theater and do away with smaller, indie acts performing.

Originally, Portman CMC was going to completely demolish the theater and start from scratch.

The plan proposed by Portman CMC would have been less expensive, according to the Herald.

“We have long believed that a renovated convention center, adjacent hotel, and reimagined convention center campus are critical to Miami Beach’s ability to maintain and grow its desirability as a tourism and convention destination,” Dan Tishman, a principal at South Beach ACE, said in a press release. “We now look forward to working with the City and the community to bring this project to fruition.”

A fundraiser for Palm Beach County Human Rights Council

The Theatre at Arts Garage is dedicating its August 2nd performance of William Randall Beard’s play, Beyond the Rainbow: Garland at Carnegie Hall as a benefit performance for the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC) in honor of their 25th anniversary of advocacy for LGBT rights in Palm Beach County.

A portion of the proceeds from the Friday night performance will benefit PBCHRC. The play starts at 7:30. A post performance wine and cheese reception with the cast and the staff of PBCHRC will cap the evening.

“We are truly honored,” said Judge Rand Hoch (Ret.), founder and president of PBCHRC. “Lou Tyrell has been an ally of the Council from the beginning. This is a perfect production for our supporters.”

“Rand and the Human Rights Council have done incredible work in the county and have made the county a better place for all of us to live,” said Tyrell, Artistic Director of The Theatre at Arts Garage. “We

As founder of the Human Rights Council, Hoch recalled the early days of the organization that he created to give a non-partisan voice to the efforts to achieve equality for LGB people in Palm Beach County.

“We needed bipartisan support,” said Hoch. “So I founded the Council in 1988 to do just that. In 1990 we led the effort to amend Palm Beach County’s Fair Housing Ordinance to protect LGB residents from discrimination in housing. That was the first and is the oldest gay rights law in the state.”

Transgender people were added to the list of protected categories in December 2007.

The play, according to Tyrell, is the work of The History Theatre in St. Paul Minnesota whose cast is performing at the Arts Garage.

“They create theater pieces that recognize famous Minnesotans, and Judy Garland was born in Grand Rapids,” Tyrell said. “She was a super star and shared her life: the ups; the downs; the sorrows; the comebacks. She

resonated with her gay fans and she still does in this production.”

The Theatre at Arts Garage shares the unique space and seating arrangement that has become a hallmark of the venue.

Cabaret tables offer group seating for people who want to bring food and beverages and be close to the stage; traditional audience seating complements the arrangement.

A wide-open space allows good visibility throughout the house.

“The actors from St. Paul were enchanted with the seating arrangement,” Tyrell said.

“They have included some of the tables in their staging with actors performing from the audience. It’s very effective and a lot of fun.”

Currently 54 percent of Americans support marriage equality. The rate of acceptance has been accelerating and perhaps in a few more years we’ll have the 60 percent needed to overturn the current laws and constitutional amendment but not right now.”

As everyone knows by now, the United States Supreme Court made two historic rulings last month on same-sex marriages: one on the legitimacy of California’s Proposition 8 which was sent back to the lower courts where it had already been overturned; the second on the issue of federal recognition of same-sex marriages performed by the states.

Although both cases are important to the LGBT equality movement, the second is of more immediate impact to same-sex couples living in Florida and the majority of other states that do not recognize the validity of same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.

South Florida Gay News caught up with Stratton Pollitzer, Deputy Director of Equality Florida who shared the following information with us.

So what’s the scoop now that the court has spoken?

“Everyone was predicting the decision that we got so we weren’t surprised. We all hoped for more but we’ll take what we

Shooting for a million signatures in time for the 2014 elections seems unrealistic.

Ballot measures generally take years before they’re presented to the voters. It would be surprising.

What about your new program to find volunteer plaintiffs to sue the state for their rights?

There are currently at least eight lawsuits moving through various states any one of which could make it to the Supreme Court.

There are many people in Florida who would welcome the chance to file suit against the state for denying our rights. In fact the first week after we put up the application form for volunteer plaintiffs we received more than 500 submissions.

We’re working with Lamda Legal, National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

We’ve got a network of Florida attorneys to review the stories we receive and help determine the correct strategy for Florida.

Florida has one of the most unfavorable appeals courts in the country.

The 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta is deeply conservative. You may recall that they upheld the ban on adoption some years ago.

So we probably don’t want Florida to be the first to the courts. We need victories in favorable circuit courts before we approach the eleventh.

So what does this mean to married couples in Florida?

Well, we can get some of the rights but not all of them. The NCLR has created a list of the rights we know about. For example, an LGBT American can now sponsor a spouse for entry into the country. But what does it take to get Social Security benefits? An act of Congress? An executive order from the White House? These are all things we need to know so we know where to make our appeals.”

So what else is Equality Florida doing?

Well, your readers may be interested in what’s happening in Jacksonville.

The city turned down an inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance last year by a single vote but it looks like it will pass this year. The major corporations in the city have come together to support equality because it makes it easier for them to attract and retain quality talent. It’s something we’ve known for years but they’re just getting the message in Jacksonville.

Then there’s Hillsboro County. Nadine [Smith, executive director of Equality Florida] was there when the county council unanimously approved the repeal of earlier anti-gay ordinances. And it looks as if Miami-Dade County is going to approve the addition of gender identity and expression to their existing nondiscrimination policy.

Pride South Florida Announces Grant Recipients SFGN Staff Pride South Florida officially announced the recipients of this year’s grants at an event at Sidelines Sports Bar in Wilton Manors over the weekend.

My HIV Diary Food for Thought

Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 46

(July 12 – July 18) I could not be happier to be where I am in my life right now. Living these last five years in South Florida has taught me a lot about where to go and where to turn to in times of need. I don’t know how I’d be managing my HIV status living in other parts of this country. The resources and healthcare systems in the Tri-County area are unmatched when it comes to taking care of people living with HIV and AIDS. Case in point: I’ve been having some terrible stomach issues the last week. To spare the details we’ll just say my symptoms

were not so pleasant. I’ve been getting back to a healthier diet thanks to friends constantly having me for dinner. I’ve talked to my medicine study doctor and my infectious disease doctor about what I’ve been feeling and the changes I’ve made to what I’m eating and how I’m taking my meds.

I have an appointment scheduled at the beginning of August to go have tests done to see if in actually suffering from food allergies. Wheat, diary and tomatoes are all on a list of possible culprits. Allergies are sometimes heightened when another ailment is attacking the body, such as my HIV. I’ve most likely been allergic to one or more food items for my entire life, but when an affliction that primarily takes place in your digestive system develops, it can complicate an already existent problem.

I’m not expecting to leave the appointment in a plastic bubble, but I do expect to have to yet again make changes to my life to accommodate my HIV status. If cutting my intake of tomatoes is what has to be done, then fine by me. If only this could have happened when my mother would force feed me Brussels sprouts as a kid.

Lavender Los Angeles was produced

by Roots of Equality, “a grassroots LGBT organization founded by” Dalal, De Simone, Emerick, Lopez, Sacher, Tran and Wang.

Like the Atlanta book, Lavender Los Angeles was based on an exhibit, produced by Roots of Equality, which “uncovered many littleknown histories of the LGBT community in Los Angeles. Most of the images in both book and exhibit come from ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives (onearchivees.org), the oldest (1952) active LGBT organization in the United States and the largest repository of LGBT materials in the world. With such a pedigree, one expects Lavender Los Angeles to deliver, and it does. Though Lavender Los Angeles will never take the place of Faderman and Timmons’s masterly Gay L.A., it is a wonderful collection of photographs of Los Angeles’s LGBT past, both the struggles and the triumphs.

As a reader and book collector, I own 35 titles in the Images of America Series, including all six LGBT volumes, along with two Arcadia titles not in the series: Golden Memories of the San Francisco Bay Area and Florida In the Civil War. Other than the LGBT titles, I tend to collect volumes about the places that I have lived in or traveled to, and thus I look forward to buying more titles as I visit more places or as more LGBTrelated books are published.

We have Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency. Do you trust all these entities with the Truth? These are the people that have brought you the disgrace we call Guantanamo Bay, the internment camps of the 21st century.

The attack on the World Trade Center was a precursor to a government assault on our civil liberties. From airport scanners and metal detectors, to cameras taking your picture- as you drive innocently through an intersection to go to the dry cleaners- we have become the Surveillance States of America. No matter where we go and what we do, someone somewhere is now watching us. We have subjugated ourselves to powerful forces that can’t be trusted.

Worse than all of the invasive intrusions into our privacy, government now seems to sanction secrecy for those who are in charge and in power. Every overreaching step that law enforcement takes is justified and defended by the need for ‘national security.’

Think about it. If you oppose a law called the ‘Patriot Act,’ what does that make you?

Fighting for your freedoms makes you seem traitorous. Outrageous.

It is no secret to us that our government deploys spies, or conducts clandestine operations. But what if the lawmakers become the lawbreakers? If someone working at an agency doing spying exposes the agency for doing things illegally, who is really violating the law? Who is the hero and who is the villain?

There is a 2009 documentary about the story, which led to lawsuits by the NY Times, when then attorney general John Mitchell went to court to try to stop publication of the documents. The Supreme Court eventually upheld the right of the NY Times to publish the Pentagon Papers. It is a pillar of first amendment law.

Flash forward to a Moscow airport in 2013.

Why is Edward Snowden fighting for his freedom after revealing to a reporter the United States has been illegally spying on our citizens? Shouldn’t we be giving this guy a medal? Has he really put soldiers at risk? Or has he gone to a reporter and revealed systemic and institutionalized corruption which is compromising your rights as an American citizen?

Transparency is healthy for our government. There is a reason freedom of the press is in the first amendment. It is the most important. Cover-ups are unacceptable breaches of the public trust, and we cannot stand for them at any level.

Whistleblowers play a critical constitutional role in our system of government, particularly in the area of national security. We reward people for their courage in standing up to the system, not take away their rights.

Bartenders, Boxers & Briefs Bill’s Filing Station’s annual Bartenders, Boxers and Briefs took place Monday and raised close to $10,000 for Tuesday’s Angels, a local non-profit that provides assistance to financially needy individuals with HIV/AIDS. A few hundred people showed to attend the annual event where bartenders from local bars came out to model clothing items and then auction them off to raise money.

Some of the bars that sent bartenders include Rosie’s, Alibi, Ramrod, Monkey Business, Bill’s Filing Station, Scandals, Sidelines Sports Bar, Rumors, and Boardwalk. Pride Factory provided the apparel for the bartenders.

“The most important thing about this event, is the camaraderie, which brings most of the bars in our community together for one event,” said Vice President of Tuesday’s Angels Chuck Nichols. “It’s not often that an event occurs in Fort Lauderdale where you have so many participating businesses. This is a win-win situation, all of the money they collected goes to Tuesday’s Angels. Every dollar we get goes to our clients, there is absolutely no overhead.”

How Does DOMA Affect Floridians?

On June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States of America (SCOTUS) laid new groundwork for same sex couples’ equality in California and the rest of the United States.

In California, the Proposition 8-ball bounced back to the lower courts where it had been adjudicated unconstitutional.

The Ninth District Court of Appeals allowed marriages to commence immediately although opponents have vowed to appeal and continue their efforts to deny gay Californians their rights.

The same day, the SCOTUS overturned Section III of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which essentially stated that the federal government of the United States recognized only marriages between one man and one woman. This, said the Court, is unconstitutional because it takes away rights from a class of people without demonstrable cause.

The Court did not rule on the constitutionality of Section II of DOMA which allows states to ignore same-sex marriages performed in other states and which will now create even more confusion for a while about what is protected where.

SFGN caught up with three local attorneys who specialize in helping gay (and straight) couples take legal steps to protect themselves and each other in a state that doesn’t recognize their existence. Gregory Kabel, Shawn Newman and Jeffrey Selzer found time in their busy schedules to share their thoughts on what has changed and what remains the same.

“Basically,” said Selzer. “Not a lot has changed in Florida and other states where same-sex marriages are not recognized. You still need a domestic partnership agreement to visit a partner in the hospital. Then there’s the living will, health care power of attorney,

financial power of attorney, and a specific last will and testament so you can direct your assets where you want them to go.”

“If you’re a heterosexual couple in Florida you practically don’t need a will,” Kabel added. “Your assets are transferred 100 percent to surviving spouse unless you have minor children. Then 50 percent goes to them and the other 50 percent to the spouse.”

“You know those thousand plus benefits we talk about,” asked Newman? “Well, they are not a neat package and they are administered by various agencies in the federal government as well as the state governments. Some of the connections are legislated, some were created administratively, and some just happened that way.”

The other attorneys concurred with this and Kabel noted that the IRS and Social Security “Both look to the state of residence to see if you’re married so even if you’re married in Massachusetts, for example, if you live in Florida you’re single for these two federal agencies, too.”

“President Obama can make some changes by executive order although he seems reluctant to do so,” Newman said.

“Other changes will require the legislature. “ Newman shared that one couple with whom he has worked have sold their property in Florida, quit their jobs and are moving to California where they will be legally recognized by both state and federal laws. “It

sounds drastic,” said Newman. “But there’s no other way to guarantee protections.”

“We’re a mobile society,” Kabel added.

“But these laws will tend to change mobility and may change the dynamic of business and industry.”

“You have to consider all aspects,” Newman said. “Living in Florida has certain tax benefits including no income tax and a homestead exemption that can have major impact on a decision to move.”

“Then there’s divorce,” Selzer noted.

“Unless the couple moves to a state that recognizes same-sex marriage and establishes residency, most commonly 6 months to a year, they cannot get divorced legally. California, Vermont and Washington DC have no residency requirement as of now.”

“The lack of clarity around divorce and the residency requirements should cause people to pause before dashing off to one of the thirteen states to get married,” Newman said.

“You may not be able to afford to relocate for six or more months at a later date.”

All three attorneys agreed that these issues will probably be back in front of the SCOTUS within three to five years.

They also agreed that this is not the time to sit back and do nothing waiting for the next round of court cases. If anything, it is more important than ever to review joint and single finances, future hopes and plans, and the steps needed to get there.

What does the June 26 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) ruling mean for gay couples?

On June 26, the Supreme Court repealed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

DOMA essentially said that even gay couples who were legally married at the state level, weren’t recognized as such at the federal level (and weren’t entitled to its marriage benefits).

With DOMA since being repealed, gay couples now have additional financial rights.

Which issues does this ruling affect in particular?

The ruling affects a multitude of issues.

Drive This, Not That: 2013 Cadillac ATS vs. 2013 Lincoln MKZ Steve Siler

Winner: 2014 Cadillac ATS

Cadillac and Lincoln have been archrivals for nearly a century, and never have they been more different than in the way they are courting the entry-luxury buyer. This makes it easy to pick a winner: the Cadillac ATS, a tidy, sporty, rear-wheel-drive sedan sized and equipped to take on one of the LGBT community’s longtime favorites, the BMW 3-Series. With three available engines and two transmissions (I tested the rip-snortin’ turbo 4-cylinder with the automatic), the Caddy is a serious performance car that is as fun to drive as it is to look at.

The Lincoln MKZ, on the other hand, is a beautiful car on the outside, but is sized and tuned to take on the large, sleepy Lexus ES350, which I consider a better match for our parents than ourselves. Interestingly, the front-drive Lincoln I tested also featured a

turbo 4-cylinder and an automatic—and each also had four wheels—but dynamically, that’s where the similarities ended. What’s more, dripping as it is with piano black trim and chrome, the ATS has a “Wha-BAM!” sense of occasion that is quite befitting of Cadillac (though the cabin is a touch snug) whereas the Lincoln has a muted, and frankly, rather pedestrian presentation of its many hightech, capacitive touch controls. At least the MKZ’s Bridge of Wier leather-covered seats are delectable, but they’re not enough to the interior’s feeling of unnecessary hugeness compared to the Caddy’s tailor-made feel.

While it’s nice to see Lincoln finally offer a modern-feeling car after decades of Town Cars and Navigators, Cadillac has the clear advantage when it comes to building cars you actually want to drive.

On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as the union between a man and a woman, unconstitutional. While people in states where gay marriage is legal rejoiced, the fight had just begun for those living in states where they aren’t recognized.

In comes Sal DeFalco and Claude Tant, a well-known local couple of 23 years, beginning their journey into the fight.

Summer is typically a slow season for South Florida’s cultural institutions as snowbird subscribers typically enjoy their summers in cooler northern climes. However, for a month each summer, the Symphony of the Americas offers dozens of concerts for the local music lovers who remain behind.

Dubbed Summerfest, for the past 22 years, the Symphony has hosted leading European chamber orchestras for a month-long series of concerts in venues across the region. This year, the I Musici Estensi orchestra from Milan is making the 2,500 mile journey to bring a little old world culture to the new world of South Florida.

Founded in 2004 by Carlo Taffuri and led by music director Lorenzo Turchi Floris, I Musici Estensi has grown and performed in many of the most prestigious concert halls of Europe, Africa and the United States, to the acclaim of critics and audiences alike.

While in South Florida, the Europeans will perform under the baton of Symphony of the Americas Music Director Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese in programs of classics

by Dvorak, Telemann, Purcell and famed Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla.

These concerts will also feature the Florida premiere of an original composition, Remembering Naples, by Guido Galterio and the world premiere of Suite for String Orchestra, commissioned from Italian composer and piano soloist, Lorenzo Turchi Floris, the Summerfest Composer-in-Residence. Performances will also be featured from Symphony of the America’s principal flutist, Marilyn Maingart, and Summerfest Concertmaster Orlando Forte and violinist Svetlana Forte.

“Summerfest is really a wonderful time of the year,” said Brooks-Bruzzese. “It offers our musicians the opportunity to collaborate with some of the finest performers from Europe, but most importantly, audiences get a musical experience like none other.”

I Musici Estensi performs repertoire ranging from Baroque music—using original period instruments—to twentieth century music including pop, gospel and jazz. This has given life to what Brooks-Bruzzese calls, “creative contamination,” a unique juxtaposition of old and new.

This year’s Summerfest takes on special significance for Brooks-Bruzzese because it caps off a yearlong 25th anniversary celebration for the Symphony of the Americas, Broward County’s resident professional orchestra, designated a major cultural institution.

in which the Symphony offered “flash mob” orchestra performances, educational workshops and special promotions culminating in the orchestra’s gala on January 25.

Following more than 20 performances, Summerfest is set to conclude with a special trip by the Italian and American musicians to Panama, the country where Brooks-Bruzzese was born. While there, they will present a week of concerts and educational masterclasses and reinforcing the Symphony’s role as a panAmerican cultural institution.

Explained Brooks-Bruzzese, “We’re especially proud to be taking the masterful sounds of this great ensemble to audiences in corners of the world who have never before experienced the exhilaration of live orchestral performances of great composers.”
