Jesse Tyler Ferguson Ties the Knot

Editorial

The couple asked guests to donate to gay rights groups as a wedding gift Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of ABC’s hit comedy “Modern Family,” has married his partner of two years in New York City. The ceremony took place on July 20. The Emmy-nominated actor married 27-year-old lawyer Justin Mikita, with whom he had been engaged since last year. According to People Magazine, celebrities including

Rebecca Romijn, Zachary Quinto, Isaac Mizrahi, Arnold Germer, Nigel Barker, Cat Deeley, Mary Murphy, Tyce Diorio, and Padma Lakshmi, among others, attended the wedding. Ferguson’s co-stars Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet were also present. The couple, who live in California, decided to get married

in New York City because “that’s where it was legal, he said on “The View” following the Supreme Court ruling on California’s Proposition 8 in late June. “Weddings are expensive, y’all, and we wanted to give that money to a state that accepted us as an equal,” the 37-year-old said. “We’re too far down the planning path to change.”

But on July 24, the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs approved a voice vote to change the definition of a spouse in the army, the Washington Blade reported. The bill is part of a package of legislations known as the Charlie Morgan Act, meant to give gay service members and veterans the same rights as

their straight counterparts. The package is named after Charlie Morgan, a lesbian guardsman who battled cancer, while also battling the legal system seeking veteran’s benefits for her spouse. Morgan died in February, just months before the Supreme Court struck down DOMA. The full Senate is yet to vote on the bill.

gathered at a local community center where the filmmakers were conducting a seminar, arresting group chairman Kris van der Veen, as well as a camerawoman, a sound technician and a female student. Police was then able to detain the tourists based on interview footage of a 17-year-old the filmmakers had gathered; the teen had allegedly told the tourists that he was an adult.

Under the country’s “homosexual propaganda” law, anyone giving minors information regarding homosexuality can be put in jail. Foreigners can be detained for up to 14 days. Last month, the Olympic committee promised athletes competing in next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi won’t be affected by the law.

The Dutch filmmakers allegedly violated the country’s ‘homosexual propaganda’ law

Even foreigners are not safe from Russia’s anti-gay laws: four Dutch tourists filming a documentary were arrested for allegedly promoting homosexuality to children. According to the Huffington Post, the tourists arrived in midJuly to the city of Murmansk to make a film about the gay community living there. On July 21, police raided an LGBT group

Veterans and service members stil do not enjoy same rights as straight couples

A portion of the Defense of Marriage Act may have been deemed unconstitutional, but gay veterans, current service members and their spouses are yet to be treated as straight couples. Title 38, a portion of the U.S. code governing veterans’ benefits, defines marriage as an opposite-sex union independently of DOMA.

+Sacha Baron Cohen Drops Freddie Mercury Biopic For - better or worse, Sacha Baron Cohen won’t be playing iconic gay singer Freddie Mercury in a film about the late Queen’s lead singer’s life. According to Deadline.com, after three years into the project, the “Borat” star decided to drop the film due to creative differences -- Cohen wanted the film to be a gritties, R-rated look at Mercury’s life and death, while the

remaining band members were hoping for a PG feature. The news comes as a surprise given the latest update on the film by Queen guitarist Brian may seemed positive: “Our main agenda was the Freddie film … which, I’m happy to tell you, is on course. Much of our discussion was about contractual things … it’s pretty complex …. and determining

Marriages, Again

Proposition 8 backers in California just won’t give up. For the second time in July, the state’s Supreme Court rejected a request to put gay marriage on hold. This time, the petition, filed July 19, came from Ernest J. Dronenburg, Jr., a Republican county clerk in San Diego, who asked the high court it to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples because marriage equality was causing him to “suffer irreparable injury and damage,” the Los Angeles Times reports. Dronenburg argued that the California Supreme Court should order gay marriage to be placed on hold while it considered another petition from Proposition 8 backers, which claimed that that the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on June 26 should only apply to the two counties where the four plaintiffs reside --Los Angeles and Alameda. The previous petition rejected in July came from Prop 8. backers. Attorney General Kamala Harris had predicted the state Supreme Court’s rejection of Dronenburg’s petition shortly after it was filed. “The filing offers no new arguments that could deny same-sex couples their constitutionally protected civil rights,” she said in a statement issued the same day as Dronenburg’s petition. “The federal injunction is still in effect, and it requires all 58 counties to perform same-sex marriages. No exceptions.”

Colonoscopy Patients Exposed to HIV in KS

Over 200 patients at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kansas, may have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. As the Chanute Tribune reports, 240 patients who had received colonoscopies in the last seven months got letters in the mail from the medical facility saying they may have contracted the deadly viruses. The mathematician, who helped to crack Nazi Germany’s secret codes and thus had a major impact for the Allies during World War II, may receive a posthumous pardon for his homosexuality conviction. The Guardian reports that British politicians will introduce a bill to pardon Alan Turing, who committed suicide in 1954 following his “gross indecency” conviction for having a same-sex relationship. “Alan Turing himself believed that homosexual activity would be made legal by a royal commission,” Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon is quoted by the Guardian as saying. “In fact, appropriately, it was parliament which decriminalized the activity for which he was convicted. The government is very aware of the calls to pardon Turing, given his outstanding achievements, and have great sympathy with this objective.” Often referred to as the “father of computer science,” Turing invented a machine that could decipher encrypted messages from the Nazi army. The 41-year-old killed himself by eating an apple laced with cyanide, after having been forcibly treated with female hormones to render him asexual, according to the BBC. The bill could make its way to the lower House of Commons by October.

Protesters Try to Disrupt Gay Pride in Lithuania Associated Press

Giedre Purvaneckiene Photo courtesy of Giedre Purvaneckiene’s Facebook

A group of protesters tried to disrupt Lithuania’s second gay Pride parade ever on July 27, defying an enormous police presence by throwing eggs at marchers and attempting to storm a stage. Several hundred gay rights activists took to the grand main street of Vilnius to show their pride, waving Lithuanian and rainbowcolored flags, with some standing on top of buses decked out in colorful balloons. They were met by hundreds of unruly protesters, 28 of whom were detained, police said. Among them was Petras Grazulis, an anti-gay lawmaker who rallied protesters with a bullhorn. He was thrown face-down on the ground and carried off in handcuffs by police, though the lawmaker soon reappeared at the protest after being released from police custody. About 50 protesters tried to storm a concert stage where activists were to speak, but police forced them off. Protesters also threw eggs, hitting Lithuanian lawmaker Giedre Purvaneckiene and Sweden’s European Union Affairs Minister Birgitta Ohlsson, who were standing at the front of the parade along with other dignitaries. “It shows that we need to march until eggs aren’t thrown anymore and people can march freely and without fear,” said Purvaneckiene, who was not injured.

The parade, dubbed “the March for Equality,” is only the second such event for Lithuania, a predominantly Catholic nation of 3 million people that activists say has not done enough to ensure gay, lesbian, and transgender rights. Large segments of the population in Lithuania, along with other areas of the former Soviet Union, are opposed to the idea of equal rights for gay people. In Russia, an unsanctioned gay rights rally in May resulted in clashes, with police detaining some 30 people, while Ukraine held its first-ever gay pride march amid a large police contingent needed to protect the small group of activists. Many feel the unrest in Lithuania, which is currently heading the EU’s rotating presidency, is particularly troubling since the Baltic state, along with neighbors Latvia and Estonia, continues to discriminate against gays and lesbians despite having undergone intense political and economic integration with Western Europe over the past two decades. Authorities in Vilnius initially refused to allocate the busy downtown avenue to the activists but were overruled by a local court. Police said one officer was injured in the day’s event.

Arin Andrews and Katie Hill look like your typical teenage couple from Tulsa, Okla. – but there is something incredibly unique about them; they are both transgender people and went through their transition process while dating. For the first 15 years of her life, Hill, born Luke, lived as a male, the British newspaper the Daily Mail reported in 2012. Her boyfriend, Andrews, 17, was born as a female named Emerald, who was a ballerina and excelled in beauty contests. Both teens struggled with their sexuality while growing up, however, and were often bullied. Nevertheless, they underwent hormone therapy and later met in a transgender support group and fell in love. “All I saw was a handsome guy. We’re perfect for each other because we both had the same troubles growing up,” Hill told the publication a year ago. “We’re both size five, so we even swap our old clothes our mum’s bought us but we hated. We look so convincing as a boy and a girl, nobody even notices now. We secretly feel so good about it because it’s the way we’ve always wanted to be seen.” Andrews, a high school student, received testosterone shots, which gave him a masculine shape while Hill, 19, had completed her estrogen shots. “I hated my breasts, I always felt like they didn’t belong. Now I finally feel comfortable in my own body,” Andrews told the U.K. tabloid paper the Sun on Monday. “Now when I’m out in a public pool or lifting weights, no one raises an eyebrow.” Hill added that she understands her

boyfriend “better than anyone else” because she is also transgender. “Even from age three, I knew deep down I wanted to be a girl,” Hill told the Daily Mail. “All I wanted was to play with dolls. I hated my boy body and never felt right in it.” Andrews echoed his girlfriend’s sentiments and says he knew he was a boy inside since the first day of school when he was five years old. “The teachers separated the girls and boys into separate lines for a game,” he said. ’I didn’t understand why they asked me to stand with the girls. Girly things didn’t interest me, but I was worried what people would think if I said I wanted to be a boy, so I kept it secret.” Though the couple’s parents support the teens and their transition, they were still the victims of bullying and were depressed. In a 2012 interview with “Inside Edition,” Hill said she was “Abused. Ridiculed. Ashamed and embarrassed.” “My parents were scared stiff and put me through 15 therapists to try and cure my depression,” she told the Daily Mail. “None helped because nobody suggested I was trans, and I didn’t know what it was.” As the Sun reports, its been over a year since the couple started their transition process. “I can wear a tank top, which I couldn’t before, and I can go swimming shirtless. I can just be a regular guy,” Andrew said. “And I’m so lucky to have my family and Katie to rely on.” For Hill, Andrews is “just my Arin. He’s always looked manly to me. But now that he’s had the surgery he’s much more confident and comfortable with himself.”

news national Persecuted Gay Immigrant to Stay in US Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Federal judges have permitted a gay Filipino immigrant to stay in the U.S. despite deportation orders because he has suffered persecution for his sexual orientation in his native land. In a decision issued on July 24, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco says 37-year-old Dennis Vitug was harassed and threatened by police in his native Philippines for being a homosexual. He moved to the U.S. in 1999 and overstayed

a tourist visa while working in the Los Angeles area and studying fashion design. Vitug became addicted to methamphetamine and was convicted of possession several times. An immigration appeals panel had ordered him removed from the country over the drug convictions. The court said Wednesday that Vitug was persecuted in the Philippines and ordered officials to withhold his removal.

Satanic Officiant Charged with Desecration of Westboro Baptist Church Grave Sergio N. Candido

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

The officiant of a Satanic Temple is being hit with a misdemeanor charge after performing a ritual in which gay couples kissed at the gravestone of the mother of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps Jr. Meridian Police Capt. Dean Harper told Huffington Post on July 24 that the man, who goes by the name Lucien Greaves and is part of New York’s Satanic Temple, would be arrested if he returned to Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The charge, however, carries no jail time, and Harper estimated that the associated fine would be “less than $500.” Greaves presided over two so-called “pink masses” at the grave of Catherine Johnston, and was also photographed putting his genitals on the headstone. The group claimed that the ritual had made Johnston’s soul gay in the afterlife, and encouraged others to perform it as well. The member of the Satanic Temple told

HuffPost via email that they did not desecrate the grave, since he and the members participating in the ritual “left the cemetery exactly as we found it” and committed no “material damage or vandalism.” He also said the ritual was intended to counter WBC’s hateful messages with acts of love. soflagaynews //

Dozen Men Arrested in LA Under Invalidated Sodomy Law Associated Press An East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office task force arrested at least 12 men since 2011 under a sodomy law invalidated a decade ago the U.S. Supreme Court, a newspaper reported Sunday. The most recent arrest was July 18 when a man discussed or agreed to have sex with a male undercover agent, The Advocate (bit.ly/13mSpdc) reported. The task force was trying to deter sexual activities at the parish’s public parks. Although sex in public and sex solicitation for money are illegal in Louisiana, neither was part of these 12 cases, and most of the men were arrested after agreeing to have sex away from the park at a private residence, District Attorney Hillar Moore III told the newspaper. “The sheriff’s office’s intentions are all good,” Moore said. “But from what I’ve seen of these cases, legally, we found no criminal violation.” The Supreme Court ruled in 2003 that a Texas law against oral or anal sex was invalid. Louisiana was among nine states with such

laws. Richard Leyoub, then attorney general, said the high court’s ruling made Louisiana’s law unenforceable. The sheriff’s office sent a statement Sunday to the newspaper saying it “should have taken a different approach” to worries about park safety, the newspaper reported (bit.ly/14pLnEv). “We will consult with others in the legislative and judicial branches to see what can be done to remove this law from the criminal code that each deputy receives and to also find alternative ways to deter sexual and lewd activity from our parks,” it said. Metro Councilman John Delgado said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux owed an apology to the men arrested and the entire parish. Delgado said he will file public records requests to determine when the district attorney’s office told the sheriff’s office that the men targeted had committed no crime. “You cannot simply hide behind not knowing that the law had been changed by

In an equal rights fight going back ten years, victory can be claimed once and for all by Florida Atlantic University’s LGBT employees. This year is the first time that FAU’s LGBT employees can be reimbursed for their domestic partner’s health insurance, if they receive insurance through the university. It started back in March 2003, when FAU’s United Faculty Senate, a voting body of more than sixty professors, passed a motion seeking domestic partner benefits. It was not until the university’s thirteen highestranking officials, the Board of Trustees, and the faculty union chapter on campus, the United Faculty of Florida signed a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in June, that benefits were extended. “These things unfortunately take time, fortunately the Union was persistent and this is what they got,” Palm Beach County Human Rights Council President Rand Hoch said. As a human rights advocate, Hoch has spent the last 25 years lobbying local and state politicians for LGBT equality. Openly gay faculty members, like Communications professor Fred Fejes, who teaches a class on sexuality and the media, agree with Hoch. “Obviously… this is a long time coming,” Fejes said, adding later “FAU is really behind the curve compared to other Florida universities.” Flordia State University and the

University of West Florida, founded in 1851 and 1963 respectively, still do not extend health insurance benefits to domestic partners, according to GayWebSource. Meanwhile, the newest public university in the state, Florida Polytechnic University, split from one of University of South Florida’s campuses last year and have already added these benefits. Under the new three-year Collective Bargaining Agreement, FAU’s LGBT employees can use the sick leave benefits similar to what married employees use, and it allows those employees with domestic partners to use a stipend, since the university cannot offer them insurance directly. This translates to FAU employees being able to take up to six months of sick leave to care for their domestic partners or their partner’s children. The new sick leave policy and the rest of the domestic partner health insurance program will be in place by mid-August, according to the PBCHRC’s press release. “Domestic partner benefits were long overdue at FAU,” UFF-FAU President Chris Robé told GayWebSource. “Offering domestic partnership benefits is a necessity for any public institution that aspires towards the ideals of equality, access, and fairness.” FAU has an anti-discrimination policy that covers LGB students, faculty and staff, but so far they’ve not added “gender identity or expression” to the policy. soflagaynews //

A Time to Care It is the middle of the summer, and the Facebook pages of your friends are sprinkled with pictures of Alaskan cruises and hiking trips in Maine. Here in Florida, our days are filled with heat in the morning and tropical storms in the afternoon. Business has slowed down, but thanks to a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, we are going to gay weddings in states like California and Connecticut. But the gay world is not in such a good state. This weekend, as some of your friends go to celebrate a weeklong gay pride in Amsterdam or Stockholm, young gay teens in Russia are being ostracized and tortured by emerging neo Nazi groups. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, has become an international czar of homophobia, enacting laws that ban individuals from holding LGBT rallies, or even writing articles supportive of our community. This is the country where the

International Olympic Games are supposed to be held in October. This past week, as gays in Lithuania tried to gather for a gay pride event, they were ‘greeted’ by protestors who tried to beat them up. The hatred that Putin advocates inevitably spreads, encouraging the crazies to come out of the closet. Africa remains a terribly dark continent for gay human rights. In Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe has just called for gay men to be ‘beheaded.’ In Ethiopia, the death penalty for homosexual conduct is on the horizon. In Uganda, gay rights activists have been tortured and killed. In New York, gay men are looking to buy wedding cakes. Here is the heads up. We are not there yet. There are still Pat Robertsons in the United States saying gays cause hurricanes; still churches complaining our behavior is a social evil. This week, the simple words of a quiet pope gave us some inspiration.

Every day is a good day for civil rights

soflagaynews //

Of gay priests, he said, “who am I to judge?” You have to hope that will send a message to millions of his followers that it is ‘nonjudgment day.’ You have to hope the LGBT community will no longer be summarily excluded as deviant. Victories come in small steps, with politicians recognizing their past mistakes or Popes coming to grips with present truths. Indeed, life would be so much easier if all of us measured the other not by the color of our skin, or the partners we slept with, but rather by the content of our character. That was the dream of Martin Luther King, shared with this nation a half century ago at the Washington Monument. It is always a good time to care about civil rights, and never a good time to be apathetic about them. The LGBT community should be composed of individuals who become the strongest advocates for the rights of international equality. This does not mean we should necessarily stop selling brands of Russian vodka, but it does mean we can band together to protest the treatment of our gay comrades in Russia. There was a gay soldier named Leonard Matlovich who once made the cover of Time Magazine, fighting the exclusion of gays from the American military. His tombstone reads “they gave me a medal for killing two men, but threw me out of the armed forces

for loving one.” To make a difference, you have to stand naked against the cannon, whether it is protesting invasions of your privacy by the National Security Agency or challenging cover-ups by crooked local pride organization leaders. Two weeks ago, a page 3 piece in SFGN noted that the new Acting Secretary of the Air Force was a gay man. We got here from there because soldiers like Leonard Matlovich stood up when it was easier to remain silent. We got to a Florida where gays can adopt because two men went to court, bucked the tide, and fought for a just ruling, striking down a discriminatory law. We recognize that poolside barbecues in the summer months are an important vacation respite, and you have to do things that are good for yourself. We also encourage you to do good things for others not able to be with you at those pool parties, because they are being drowned in a sea of continuing injustice. There are still HIV patients needing your bike ride; still teenagers being bullied; homeless gay youths with no place to turn. They need your help. Don’t let the blinding light of South Florida’s sun blind you to the LGBT inequities here at home and still pervading other gay communities across the globe. Every day is a good day for civil rights.

Should We Judge Pope Francis?

Pope Francis Photo courtesy of Casa Rosada

Pope Francis was reported to have said, “Who am I to judge?” when asked about the rumored Vatican “gay lobby” during an in-flight press conference on his home from Brazil. A frenzy of parsing, speculation and optimistic chatter ensued involving everyone except the 200 cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church who remain dumbfounded and scrambling to spin the pope’s startling words in a way that does not negate the hard line anti-gay stance of his predecessor Benedict XVI. What did Pope Francis really mean to say? And should the worldwide LGBT community dare to suspect that the Roman Catholic Church under his leadership will stop its condemnation of gay sex? It is essential to review what Francis did not say. He did not trot out the frustrating and idiotic nonsense about how God loves gay people but hates gay sex. Either he has been told that that line is insulting or perhaps he himself recognizes its absurdity. We do not yet know for sure. Because he was responding specifically to a question about the supposed “gay

lobby” at work in the Vatican, his remarks should not be considered a redefinition of sexual sin that still includes— at least until his next press conference—gay sex. I find refreshing another part of his answer to the “gay lobby” question. He reportedly said that he has yet to find anyone in the Vatican carrying a business card that identifies himself as gay. In other words, Francis knows there will always be men, including Vatican prelates, who have sex with men, but they do not identify themselves in terms of that activity. More likely, they consider gay sex a shortcoming, a failure, or a slip-up on the road to spiritual perfection. They probably go to confession—perhaps to Francis himself—and unburden their souls of guilt over their “sin.” Absolution and forgiveness are given and the penitent priest, bishop or cardinal is back in the good graces of God. Is the repentant man “gay?” Most of us would say so, but Francis doesn’t seem to feel that way, and he is not alone in that perspective. His parents were Italian, and the gay rights movement in Italy has not grown apace with the rest of Europe because Italian men make a distinction between having sex with other men at various times in the course of their lives and actually being “gay.” Many Italian men who have sex with their male friends are mystified by the American notion of becoming self-identified as part of “The Gay.” That digression aside, the Pope’s response about the supposedly gay priest he appointed to investigate the Vatican Bank further elucidates his point of view regarding gay priests. He said that he had found via investigation nothing substantial in the accusations. He decried gay blackmail. Again, what is important here is what Francis did not say. He did not use the moment to accentuate some stern repudiation of gay sex. He did not express the kind of gay panic that usually results in a witch hunt. Instead, by saying “Who am I to judge?” he borrowed a page from the playbook of Jesus who,

when presented with the woman caught in adultery, invited those without sin among her accusers to cast the first stones. Once the mob had gone home, he told the woman to go home and to sin no more. It is important to understand that in Catholic tradition, sin and forgiveness constitute a repetitious cycle of life from cradle to grave. In the privacy of the confessional, a Catholic priest who receives the whispered account of gay sex, abortion or contraception or anything else imaginable that might trouble someone, knows full well that after he absolves the person from that sin, chances are good that he or she will be back a week later to confess it all over again, despite having had the strong intention to sin no more. This is really a very humane and healthy way to approach the human condition. Sin, from a Catholic perspective, is like dieting. You say you want to do it. You try to do it. You fail. You resolve again to do it. You fail a thousand times more. Does that make you an evil person? No. It makes you someone who, as the Pope said on Monday, “searches for the Lord and has good will.” “Wait just a minute,” some gay Catholics responded when they read the reports of the press conference. “I don’t want to be forgiven for gay sex. It’s not sinful. The pope and his church are still against me even with this latest bit of patronizing nonsense!” I understand that anger. Personally, I never felt—not even for a single moment in all my years in the seminary and in the priesthood—that gay sex was a sin. I never once confessed it. I didn’t understand gay priests who agonized over it. Later I felt angry with them when they went on the offensive against marriage equality. Now, I just pity them because they are mostly a bunch of old men who have wasted and twisted their lives trying to live up to something that Jesus never wanted for them. Among those priests is Pope Francis, but he stands apart from his tribe in that he is not full of bitter recrimination for men like me who trust their instincts about the moral goodness of gay sex. I am quite sure that if I asked to be restored to the active ministry in the Catholic Church he would want me to renew my promise to be celibate, but he probably wouldn’t bat an eyelash if several hours later I confessed to him that I had sex with a Swiss guard shortly after our meeting. (There is also the rather complicated matter of my having acquired a husband. I don’t

soflagaynews //

suspect Francis would feel good about that, but he’d probably not hesitate to accept a dinner invitation to our house before telling me so.) Should we be encouraged by what Pope Francis said on Monday? Yes. Is the Catholic Church’s persecution of gay people over? No. But for the first time in the lives of anyone breathing today, there is indication that the worst may be over. Francis also said in the course of that press conference that he wanted women to have stronger leadership in the church. Although he repeated Pope John Paul II’s proclamation that women will never be ordained, he could start that process by making some female cardinals. (Cardinals do not have to be priests.) Make enough women cardinals, and the next conclave could find a pope who will extinguish the anti-gay inquisition once and for all. I hope I live to see it.

One of the goals of the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is to promote Miami as a year-round, gay and gay-friendly tourist destination. With that in mind our Chamber engages in partnerships with many organizations or companies whose products and services cater to the tourists or locals who want to learn more about what Miami has to offer. Below, our Corporate Partners Big Bus Miami www.bigbustours.com / 800336-8233 provide us with great insights on our “Desire to Explore”. When visiting a new city for the first time, we’ll often go out and see the places and landmarks that make that city famous. We’ll probably have a tick-list of the things we want to see and do. In New York it’ll be the Statue of Liberty or the view from the Empire State Building, in Washington, D.C. it’s a walk along the National Mall and the grand Memorials. For visitors to Miami a visit to South Beach and Ocean Drive is often that ‘must do’ activity. On our second or third visit to a city, we want to find something a little more personal. To find a fantastic restaurant, discover a niche museum or relaxing coffee shop; something that gives us a connection and makes us feel like an insider. We’ll wander down a street simply because of its architecture, browse through a quirky shop or be willing to sample new cuisine. We want to explore. But what happens to that enthusiasm when we come home? For most of us that passion for exploration diminishes and we return to our set routines, habits and traditional favorite places. Big Bus Miami encourages you to keep that enthusiasm for exploration!

My HIV Diary Comfortable in My Own Skin

Each week Ryan Dixon shares his story of taking HIV medication. Photo courtesy of Grindr

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 47

(July 19 – July 25) I sometimes hate that I don’t have to see a doctor every month but rather every three or six months. That means I don’t have any numbers to log or report, but it also means I’m well enough to not have to be under constant care of a physician. August 3 is my next appointment for my medicine study and the numbers I’ll get will be two months old. After that appointment, I have one with my AHF doctor in September and the next study appointment will be in November. I’ve had two incidences this week that I feel the need to share even though it’s a subject I’ve touched on before. I had two young guys on Grindr message me and

tell me that they’ve noticed my body has changed. I think I’d be the first person to notice I’ve put on weight. My favorite jeans don’t fit anymore. I can barely fit into a medium shirt without having to suck it in when I go out. I didn’t need the messages telling me that I’ve “let myself go” and I’m “not taking care of myself.” Fact is, a lot if people living with HIV and AIDS suffer from lypodustrophy and other body appearance changes. I seriously wish I could get rid of some of the weight, but I can’t without the help of other medicines. When AZT was first introduced in the 80s, doctors often prescribed their patience steroids to help with the body and fat wasting many patients were experiencing. My doctor said that maybe after the first year’s data has been collected for the study I might be able to take steroids or a fat fighting drug to help me out. In all honesty, I think I’m okay with my body right now. I had over 50 comments on Facebook post about the messages all telling me I look great and to not worry about what some twinks on a hook-up site think. I feel comfortable in my skin but at the same time I still feel the need to live up to the hype of what a gay man is supposed to look like.

Private Manning Goes to Jail, But the Government is Guilty Norm Kent

correction

Correction In the article on “How Does DOMA Affect Floridians?” published in the July 24 edition, Attorney Gregory Kabel was quoted as saying that a surviving spouse receives 100 percent of the assets of a deceased spouse unless there are minor children in which case the assets are divided between the surviving spouse and the minor children. The quote should have read that the surviving spouse receives all assets unless one of the spouses has children from a previous relationship in which case the assets are divided between the surviving spouse and descendants. We regret the error.

“Government whistleblowers are part of a healthy democracy and must be protected from reprisal.” -Senator Barack Obama, 2008, then a presidential candidate. When Glenn Greenwald, the gay Guardian columnist featured in this week’s SFGN, wrote about Bradley Manning in December of 2011, he argued that the prosecution of the whistleblower was “an exercise in intimidation, not justice.” Subject to intense solitary confinement, held for over three years, forced at times to stand nude for inspection after his clothing was seized, the gay soldier was found not guilty yesterday of the most serious charges against him, that he “aided the enemy,” a charge which carried the death penalty. From the outset, Private First Class Manning stood by his contention that leaking this classified information to the public would start a healthy national domestic debate on the role of the military and U.S. foreign policy. Earlier this year, on February 28, Manning pled guilty to some of the lesser charges of leaking the information. Yesterday, Judge Lind found Manning guilty of 19 more charges for that effort to inform the American people of the policies pursued in their name. Amongst the charges that Manning had pled guilty to was his leaking of a video showing a U.S. Apache helicopter in Baghdad gunning down civilians and a Reuters journalist. The proceeding will now immediately enter a sentencing phase, with more witnesses testifying for both sides. He could still go to jail for life.

SouthFloridaGayNews

Most importantly, from the outset Private Manning contended “I want people to see the truth… regardless of who they are… because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a public.” He leaked materials, which exposed American atrocities in a foreign war. Lind first had refused to throw out charges — including the aiding the enemy charge — which Manning’s defense argued the government had not substantiated. However, with the standard of evidence different after a trial than during a pre trial motion, Lind found Manning not guilty of “aiding the enemy,” the most serious charge. Nevertheless, Manning has still been convicted of supplying information to the press, to places like Wikileaks. For the past three years, the U.S. government has pressured him to turn on Julian Assange and Wiki Leaks. The government has spent three years portraying Manning as a traitor who was secretly aiding Al Qaeda. Now we know that the government’s primary arguments were a conspiracy of lies, orchestrated to protect their own illegal acts and outrageous atrocities that should turn the stomach of most Americans. After a thousand days of abusive pre trial treatment while being denied fundamental constitutional rights, it is Bradley Manning, a gay man, who now faces a lifetime in jail. But it is the powerful forces of our government that should be disgraced, convicted of filing false charges, leveling specious allegations, and engaging in activities that threaten a free press everywhere in America.

Local Couple Makes History With Green Card Application Christiana Lilly

christiana.lilly@gmail.com

Julian Marsh and Traian Popov’s love story started like any other – seeing each other at two consecutives parties led to dating and eventually a trip to Brooklyn in October 2012 to get married. But now, two years after it all started, they’re swept up in a whirlwind of history making and their names splashed in newspapers around the world. The gay binational couple was the first to have their petition for a green card approved without ever first being denied – as has been the case for couples across the country. Just two days after the Supreme Court overturned Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, a clerk somewhere signed off on their application and changed their lives. In six to nine months, Marsh – an American citizen – and Popov – a Bulgarian citizen on a student visa – hope to get that green card to keep Popov in the country, just like any other straight couple could. The day the two received word that their petition was approved, the press starting calling their lawyer from the DOMA Project. “It was unbelievable, I had to create a spreadsheet to keep track,” Marsh said. “It was overwhelming and for four solid days it was nonstop. It was hard to contemplate what was going on.” The DOMA Project (DOMAProject.org) is a nonprofit organization headed up by a law firm in New York City working to keep binational gay couples from being separated. With their marriages only being recognized by some states, many green card applications

20

// 7.31.2013 // SFGN.com //

were being denied right off the bat. However, with optimism that the Supreme Court would overturn DOMA, many were applying for green cards just to get the process started and then appeal any denied applications. Marsh and Popov were taken on as clients free of charge and just paid for processing fees. “They were the ones that guided us, we didn’t know what to do,” Popov said. For Marsh and Popov, the decision to get married was not only the next logical step in their relationship, but also to keep Popov in the country when his studies at Nova Southeastern University were completed. After an emotional ceremony at a New York City courthouse (the two ironically lived in the Big Apple at the same time and never met) the couple ran to the DOMA Project to turn in a copy of their marriage license to start the green card application. When they returned home to Broward County, their license was just

a piece of paper and the two had to apply to be recognized as domestic partners. Then, in June, they got word that their green card petition was accepted. Not only has the press been eager to hear what the couple has to say, but couples locally have been reaching out to them, showing how widespread the strife of binational couples is. “Now they recognize us and they come, let’s say in the gym, and people come and they ask us about their own immigration troubles,” Popov said. “When they come and talk to you, that’s when it hits you. You see these people so many times.” The couple wants to take advantage of their unexpected fame and use it for good. They’ll be partnering with Equality Florida to spread SouthFloridaGayNews

the word about how gay couples are impacted by immigration issues rocking Congress. Florida’s own Sen. Marco Rubio said he would not support his own immigration bill if gay couples were included. “He was killing the whole legislation affecting 11 million people just to victimize 30,000 people,” Popov said. If DOMA weren’t overturned, the couple would have been forced to move to Toronto, where their marriage is recognized and where Marsh originally hails from. However, for both of them that would have meant leaving behind decades of memories and stability. “That’s 23 years of my life I’m going to walk away from because I’m gay? Come on,” Marsh said.

The News Breaker

How Glenn Greenwald Went from the Cathode Ray to Center Stage

Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

When he came out of the closet at the age of 21 in 1988, Glenn Greenwald was living in Lauderdale Lakes and working at a summer day care center with a lesbian couple. But that was a lifetime ago. Today, Greenwald is 46, a national figure, and an investigative reporter who is at the epicenter of a nationwide debate on the reaches and breadth of the National Security Agency. As a journalist Greenwald normally writes about the news, but recently, he’s become the news after being contacted by Edward Snowden, the National Security analyst who was looking for a credible journalist to release revelations of secret spying by the American government. Since breaking the story, Greenwald has been accused of “aiding and abetting the enemy” and has become a part of the story. Before Greenwald was an internationally known journalist he was a just a humble kid living in South Florida. It was the couple mentioned above who introduced Greenwald to the gay nightlife of South Florida. “I was like a kid in a candy store,” Greenwald says, reminiscing of nights spent at Backstreet, the Copa and the Cathode Ray on East Las Olas. “There were very few gay role models back then,” he continued. “And like many other young men, I felt the stigma and alienation of being gay. But I turned it around. I recognized I had to forge my own path. ” He certainly has. Greenwald is today recognized as one of the most prominent and prolific political pundits and commentators in the country he no longer lives in. A lawyer by trade, a journalist by choice, Greenwald resides in Rio De Janeiro, with his with his partner David Michael Miranda, a bi-national same-sex couple residing outside American borders because of laws just altered by the U.S. Supreme Court. “Brazil recognizes our relationship for immigration purposes, while the government of my supposedly ‘free’ libertyloving country enacted a law explicitly barring such recognition,” Greenwald told Fred Bernstein in an OUT Magazine 2011 interview. He was of course referring to the Defense of Marriage Act, just one of many examples Greenwald cites as stripping away the rights of Americans. Greenwald has always been willing to stand naked against the cannon. He takes pride that his first race for public office

was as a 17-year-old teenager. Encouraged by a mentorial grandfather who had previously served on the Lauderdale Lakes city commission, Greenwald launched a campaign against “corruption” and “negligence” in city government. Greenwald would go on to lose a city commission race, not once, but twice, each time against Josephus Eggelletion. Twenty years later, Greenwald would author his first book on the frailties of the Patriot Act. Eggelletion would go on to serve on the

The landlord refused to treat the pair as a couple, and would not combine their income to meet rental guidelines. “I actually had to have my father co-sign for me,” he recalls. “It was a denigrating experience.” In another instance, a civil lawsuit required he reveal intimate personal communications between he and his partner. “Because we are gay, and were not legally married, the spousal communication privilege did not

Broward County Commission and end his term disgraced, a convicted felon doing a stint in state prison for embezzlement. Decades later, Greenwald is still standing alone, challenging the governmental apparatus that he asserts has “illegally invaded the privacy rights of American citizens.” Greenwald left Florida to get his undergraduate degree from George Washington University. He would then move to Manhattan and attend New York University Law School. “By that time, I was living in a city where you were accepted for who you were, but you still faced structural injustices that needed to be challenged.” His early legal experience was with a white-collar firm, an experience that left him frustrated and unfulfilled. He became an advocate for the powerful instead of the powerless. There was no comfort zone. One such moment confronted the young lawyer when he and his then domestic soflagaynews //

apply. Consequently, I was forced to divulge behavior and incidents that a straight couple never would have faced.” Greenwald continued, “As an openly gay man, these incidents were eye opening and they emboldened me. It led to anger, but determination as well.” At the time, Greenwald speculated he might have a political future. But today, like lawyering, he rules it out summarily, with passion. “The practice of law was constraining. You constantly have to placate the stupidity of judges who dictate imperial powers, determining your fate. Your impact is marginal, limited to the boundaries of a particular case or claim.” On the other hand, Greenwald, who has written four books, finds his career as an author and investigative journalist empowering. “I not only feel freer, but I think I am working on things more significant, more liberating and consequential.”

SouthFloridaGayNews

Indeed, Greenwald recently testified before the U.S. Congress by Skype from Rio about the abuses of the National Security Agency (NSA). He also recently did a segment on CNN’s Piers Morgan Show, guest hosted by Morgan Spurlock. Sunday morning he told George Stephanopoulos on ABC, “The NSA has trillions of telephone calls and emails in their databases that they’ve collected over the last several years.” Greenwald noted these calls were easily accessible to even low level NSA analysts, “able to be used as simply as a computer screen in front of a supermarket clerk.” Greenwald’s congressional testimony this week is part of a larger career that has made him a fiery guest on national television news shows and a compelling lecturer in American universities. This week, he told SFGN that he relishes the challenge he faces today. “I want to use this information I have received to make Americans more aware of their civil rights and how their democracy is being compromised,” he said. “I have a platform and I want to use it effectively.” Armed with a quick wit and an armada of facts that he presents with rapid-fire speed, Greenwald generates a commanding and compelling presence on the air. It is a skill he has honed writing the past few years as a columnist for Salon.com and now for The Guardian. Greenwald’s political passions are transparently left of center, but they are presented with the cogent background of a constitutional rights lawyer making his case. He is serious, no-nonsense, and strident with his arguments. Referring to the Foreign Intelligence Service Act or the National Security Agency, Greenwald’s words are defining: “Secret courts and invasive spying are an anathema to what our country is supposed to be about. Completely opaque proceedings are contrary to our democracy.” Various challenges have forged Greenwald’s iron will, but few will probably be more demanding than the stories that have come his way this past month. Contacted by Edward Snowden, the National Security analyst who was looking for a credible journalist to release revelations of secret spying by the American government, Greenwald flew to Hong Kong to meet him.

After numerous meetings, Greenwald recognized what he was getting himself into, and it was a lot bigger than a seat on the Lauderdale Lakes city commission. “I knew the government might come after me, but I knew I was going to report the story aggressively. I knew it was going to be tumultuous.” It has been so. Greenwald acknowledges these past few weeks have taxed his relationship with his partner, David Miranda, who is finishing school for a business and marketing degree. “I knew this story would change our lives, but David and I talked frequently even when I was in Hong Kong, and he has been extremely supportive, played a significant role in our discussions, and while we have dealt with anxiety, because all this has been stressful, we will emerge stronger. These kind of challenges foster growth and solidarity in relationships.” The two have been together since they met on a beach in Brazil over a decade ago. Greenwald is confident in the eventual outcome. He believes that once fully exposed, the government’s secret spying programs, started by George Bush and carried on by President Obama, are going to outrage Americans. “ “I think public policy is already beginning to shift,” citing an amendment just last week sponsored by a Republican congressman, which would have limited NSA spying powers. It failed by only a dozen votes. Greenwald immediately authored a column showing how many liberal Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, backed continued secrecy. In South Florida, Congressman Alcee Hastings and Richard Grayson voted to limit the powers of the NSA. But other

liberals like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Patrick Murphy did not. Greenwald admires the courage of Edward Snowden, and acknowledges that his decision was courageous, fraught with legal perils. He even recognizes a retributive government; angry at exposes he has written may eventually turn its sights on him. Indeed, on MSNBC, commentator David Gregory confronted Greenwald, asking why he should not be charged with “aiding and abetting the enemy.” Lawmaker Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) originally put the idea that Greenwald should be prosecuted forward. The chairman of the House Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, he falsely told Fox News that Greenwald was threatening to disclose the identities of CIA officers. Ironically, the U.S. Supreme Court decision providing for same sex marriages will also allow Greenwald and his partner to eventually move back to the United States. But it is not so easy. “First, David is from Brazil, and has never lived in the states,” Greenwald said. “And frankly, with the story on Snowden breaking at the same time of the Supreme Court decision, we really have not had time to even process a move. But it is something we think about.” Even though he still has mother and father residing in South Florida, it’s a pretty safe bet that if Greenwald comes back to the states, it will be on a more center stage than Lauderdale Lakes. But it may not be the borough of Queens in New York City either, where he was born. Greenwald and his partner have 12 rescued dogs in their house in Rio, and there are few apartments in New York City that can house that big of a kennel.

When he came out of the closet at the age of 21 in 1988, Glenn Greenwald was living in Lauderdale Lakes and working at a summer day care center with a lesbian couple. But that was a lifetime ago, today, Greenwald is 46, a national figure, and an investigative reporter who is at the epicenter of a nationwide debate on the reaches and breadth of the National Security Agency. Before Greenwald was an internationally journalist he was a just a humble kid living in South Florida. A lawyer by trade, a journalist by choice, Greenwald resides in Rio De Janeiro, with his with his partner David Miranda, a bi-national same-sex couple residing outside American borders because of laws just altered by the U.S. Supreme Court. “Brazil recognizes our relationship for immigration purposes, while the government of my supposedly ‘free’ liberty-loving country enacted a law explicitly barring such recognition,” Greenwald told Fred Bernstein SouthFloridaGayNews // SFGN.com // 7.31.13 //

South Florida’s vibrant regional theatre scene has been unusually quiet this summer, but instead of productions, many of the companies have offered a different kind of experience—staged readings of new works by talented local playwrights. Tonight, the Naked Stage offers an evening of short plays by Carbonell Award-winning playwright Christopher Demos Brown at the Pelican Theatre on the campus of Barry University, 11300 NE 2nd Ave. in Miami. Several of South Florida’s most talented actors will be featured. Best of all, it’s free. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 954-261-1785.

Two Contestants of this Season of Project Runway Have Local Ties Lifetime’s emmy-nominated reality show returns for 12th Season Erik R. Caban The sewing, stitching and shredding returns in the twelfth season of Project Runway, which premiered July 18 on Lifetime. Sixteen fresh designers will encounter inventive challenges, unexpected eliminations, fan interaction, the return of a mystery contestant from seasons’ past chosen by fans, and celebrity judges, including Michael Kors, Kaley Cuoco, Kelly Osbourne and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Expect lots of confidence, dueling personalities, drama, — one contestant even goes “missing” – lots of unconventionality and lots of gay! As part of the newly added “PlayRunway,” legions of fans will be able to interact with viewers across the country in real-time during each episode through the new interactive on-screen feature. This feature empowers fans to use their smartphones, tablets and computers to share their reactions to episode storylines, design challenges and decisions by judges. Among the fan integration elements include the Project Runway superfan contest. Via video submissions, seven super fans will be chosen to be featured in an upcoming episode this season for a fashion makeover. This season will also offer up more Tim Gunn. Fans have asked and Project Runway has delivered. Gunn will join supermodel and fashion maven Heidi Klum, fashion icon Zac Posen and Marie Claire fashion director Nina Garcia to watch the runway show. Gunn will be able to “rescue” one designer during course of the season he feels deserves a second chance. This season boasts two contestants from Florida; 27 year old Justin LeBlanc from Tampa who now resides in Raleigh, NC and 29 year old Karen Batts, originally from Boca Raton who now resides in New York. SFGN caught up with the two courtiers. SFGN: Why do you think you will win Project Runway? Justin LeBlanc: I KNOW that I can win Project Runway. I have the skill, the passion, the drive and the knowledge needed to win. I think that I also have the personality to enamor the audience and judges. I do believe that I have the ability to inspire others; that’s a big thing in my book as a designer.

Going back a bit, how did your fashion career get started? While growing up, I always knew that I was a designer, although I didn’t realize that fashion design was my calling until college. Being deaf has made me a more visual person. This naturally drew me to finely crafted designs. I began my formal training in architectural design but soon realized that fashion design provided me greater opportunities to express my creativity. How would you describe your design aesthetic? I would describe my design aesthetic to be minimalistic, highly tactile, with a zeal for finding new techniques. Who are your style icons/inspirations? My style icon is Daphne Guinness and some of my greatest influences are from some of my favorite artists and designers, including Lucy McRae, Bart Hess and Alexander McQueen. My training in architecture also heavily influences my design aesthetic. My deafness has always influenced my design aesthetic, as I strive to provide a full visual experience in my designs. You talk a lot about utilizing the five senses in your work. How did you overcome any difficulties on the show because of your deafness? My hearing loss may cause me to have difficulty understanding challenge instructions or discussions amongst the designers. However, I will request a sign language interpreter if I need one. I am quite determined. Oh, and I think that my deafness may help me at times because I can turn my hearing device off in order to avoid drama in the workroom and focus on my designs. Not that this will be a problem - this is Project Runway! [Laughs] Architect, fashion designer, and artist; is there one medium you are more passionate about than the other? All the above. I was trained to think critically and understand the threedimensionality of design. With my varied training in architecture, fashion, and art soflagaynews //

allows me to exploit and fuse different approaches, resulting in artistic expression that cannot be conveyed by one discipline alone. With such a full palate, does it make it difficult to have a dating life? That is the last thing on my mind at the moment! However, I always love meeting new people and hearing their stories. For more info. and to see Justin LeBlanc’s work, check out jleblancdesign.com.

How would you describe your design aesthetic? I would say my design aesthetic is definitely classic, minimalist infused with current trends. It’s beautiful - it has a girliness to it but has a tom-boy influence mixed in there.

SFGN: Why do you think you will win Project Runway? Karen Batts: I think that I’m going to be the winner because I feel I bring an interesting point of view to fashion. It’s definitely something people want to wear. People are intrigued by my designs. My style is very much classic infused with current trends. I feel that really resonates with people. Going back a bit, how did your fashion career get started? I grew up learning to sew from my mom and grandma. I was about 8 or 9 when I began sewing. I actually joined 4H, which is kind of like Girl Scouts but co-ed. In 4H, I did the sewing programs. I went to sewing camp one summer. I had a love for creating clothes then but I didn’t really realize that I loved designing until I went to college. Originally, I had gone to study photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design. While there, I took a fashion class and it opened my eyes to wanting to study design. It was through the course of my studies that I was like, “Yes, this is what I want to do. There’s no turning back from here.” [Laughs] I saw that you are from Boca Raton. I’m very familiar with there, living in Orlando myself. Did you have a fashion career while there? I lived in Boca until going to college in Savannah. So, my only fashion career while in South Florida was moreso home sewing and sewing for myself. I definiteky hope to go back ther now and talk to boutiques in the area and say, “Hey, I’m a Florida native, you should sell amazing garments I made.”

Who are your style icons/inspirations? I love the way Parisian women dress. It’s so... beautiful. It’s looks so casually put together but reads so chic-looking! Parisian women are such an influence. I love Hollywod stars like Keira Knightley and Elle Fanning - they’re so beautifully put together all the time. I love it! Totally effortless! What fashion trends do you see for the fall? Print wise, I definitely see pastels but influenced by the night sky. I’m working on prints that - I don’t want to say psychedelic - but involve animals. Now I don’t mean kitty cats with lasers coming out of their eyes or something but definitely interesting. [Laughs] Photographer and fashion designer; is there one medium you are more passionate about than the other? I don’t know. They’re apples and oranges. I love fashion and luckily it’s very commercial, so you can make money but fine art

photography, I generally keep to myself. I went to school wanting to be a fashion photographer. It’s funny - when I graduated, I fell into doing more fine art photography. I have a medium format film camera that I use. I love to work in the dark room creating black and white prints of still life. I love to shoot my own work. I would love to someday be like Karl Lagerfeld - who, here he is designing his own collection but then he’s doing photgraph campaigns for Chanel. I think that’s so exciting. What has the experience been like being away from your husband/family while taping? It’s been tough, especially being away from my husband. He is my rock. If I have a bad day or if I have a question, he’s the person I turn to. So, it’s been hard to not have him right there with me or to see him at the end of the day but getting to know the other cast members and hearing their stories about loved ones has been encouraging. We’re there to commiserate with each other. We can help each other, like “Hey, we’re gonna get through this” or “It’s going to be ok.” [Laughs] This is probably the most crazy experience I’ve been through. I’d do it again but it’s way more challenging than being in school. It’s kind of funny. I read that you did a fashion competition prior to Project Runway in Charleston. I did a fashion competition for Charleston Fashion Week. It was this past March. I created a twelve look collection; fall - winter women’s wear. Basically, how it works is you show an eight look collection and then at the semifinals you show the twele look collection. I was able to show an eight look fall-winter collection on the runway. It was amazing. I’m really proud of how it came out - and just to have my garments walking on models down an actual runway - this is why I’m here. This is why I’m doing this. It was so joyful to see.

Karen Batts Photo courtesy of Barbara Nitke

Do you think that helped prep you for Runway? Definitely! I had actually applied last year. I had done the paper application and I got an email saying that the show wasn’t going to pursue me further. I wasn’t asked to come to the audition when they were here in New York. This year, it’s funny, because I was going to audition again since I didn’t have a full time job or anything important enough going on to stop me from being able to be on the show. I missed the paper application deadline, so I just went to the open call. I brought pieces from my Charleston show and Anthony Ryan [from season nine and AllStars winner] was there. He just loved what I had made. It was an incredible experience to have something close to your heart resonate with someone else. It was so awesome!
