Federal Judge Rules DADT Unconstitutional By Jarrett Terrill

L

ast Thursday, a Federal Judge in Central California, Justice Virginia Phillips, handed down her decision in Log Cabin Republicans vs. United States of America. The suit challenges the constitutionality of the Military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. Phillips said the law violates the First and Fifth Amendment rights of servicemen and women. In her ruling, Phillips said the policy doesn’t help military readiness and instead has a “direct and deleterious effect” on the armed services by hurting recruiting during wartime and requiring the discharge of service members with critical skills and training. Citing testimony at a two-week trial in July by experts and former service members, Phillips wrote: “All of these examples demonstrate that the act’s restrictions on speech not only are broader than reason-

ably necessary to protect the government’s substantial interests, but also actually serve to impede military readiness and unit cohesion rather than further these goals.” The Clinton-appointed Justice Phillips granted a request for an injunction to stop the military from discharging openly gay service members, but allowed the government time to appeal the ruling. Daniel Woods of the law firm White & Case is the lead attorney for the Log Cabin Republicans. Assistant United States Attorney Paul Freeborne is charged with defending DADT on behalf of the United States. However, for the very same reason that Proposition 8 sponsors may not be able to appeal the ruling in favor of gay marriage, Log Cabin Republicans may be prevented from being able to see this through to a higher court. That is the issue of standing. When Federal lawyers argued to keep DADT in place before Justice Phillips back in July,

they highlighted the fact that the LCR could not challenge the law – it must be challenged by gay servicemembers. The Justice Department has indicated that it wants DADT to be repealed in Congress. The House of Representatives has already passed a bill to repeal DADT but the Senate has not yet moved to vote on it. According to Robert Barnes of the Washington Post, “Phillips’s decision is likely to put more pressure on Congress to act on pending legislation that would repeal the policy, which forbids the military to ask about a service member’s sexual orientation but retains a ban on gays serving openly.” Florida Senator Bill Nelson said recently at the GLBT Democratic Caucus in South Florida that he expects DADT to be repealed in the Senate very soon and that the process for repeal is getting a lot of help from military generals.

Economic Update

Jobless Claims Fall, Trade Deficit Narrows By Joey Amato

A

s reported by Reuters last week, new U.S. claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week to a two-month low, while the trade deficit narrowed sharply in July, adding to hopes that a recovery could be in effect. The reports calmed fears that growth was slowing and added to optimistic views that the economy may be turning around.

A Labor Department official said given the Labor Day holiday, some states had been unable to submit claims data, resulting in the department making estimates for them. Since then, some states have submitted data, but the number was unlikely to be revised. Government data showed that private employers added 67,000 jobs in August and the prior month’s numbers were revised to show 36,000 more jobs created than previously reported. The unemployment rate currently stands at 9.6 percent. In a separate report, the U.S. trade deficit declined 14 percent to $42.8 billion in July, smaller than the $47.3 billion gap that markets had expected. In July, exports rose 1.8 percent to $153.3 billion, led by overseas demand for U.S. civilian aircraft, machinery, computers and

“We were expecting that things would slow down in the third quarter and start to pick up in the fourth quarter, but now it seems like the slowdown in the third quarter wasn’t as severe as we feared,” said David Sloan, an economist at 4CAST in New York. Initial claims for unemployment benefits dropped 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 451,000, the lowest since the week ended July 10, the Labor Department said. Analysts had expected this number to be around 470,000.

other capital goods. Imports fell 2.1 percent to $196.1 billion, after a 3 percent rise in June. The drop in July was the largest since February 2009. Imports from both China and Germany were the highest since October 2008. The trade deficit with China fell almost 1 percent in July, but for the first seven months of the year it was nearly 18 percent higher, at $145.4 billion, compared to the same period in 2009.

Business Commentary

Let the Cards Fall By Joey Amato

L

et me start off my mentioning that the following is only my opinion and is based on recent articles that I have read from a variety of sources including CNN, MSNBC and my favorite money website, CNBC. Back in 2007, I was sitting at the dinner table with my family in New York and I remember saying that the U.S. was heading into a depression. Well, I was almost right. Even though only a few individuals ventured to officially call the recent economic downtown a depression, we have witnessed the worst recession in recent memory. Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak said in a recent CNBC interview, “This is not the 1983 Fed interest rateinduced recession. This was an overleveraged consumer credit crisis/financial crisis, and when you look globally,” he adds, “we are effectively where you would be following the type of crisis we had.” Instead of “letting the cards fall,” President Obama began pumping billions of dollars into the economy in the form of a stimulus package. The result has been in my opinion, prolonged agony. Instead of the house of cards coming crashing down, Obama decided to add some support beams to a few sectors of the economy which needed help. The immediate effects seemed to work, but recently, we have begun to see even further deterioration, and unemployment, the country’s most prominent dilemma, has not been resolved. In a recent article published by the New

York Times, David Streitfeld mentions “some economists and analysts are now urging a dose of shock therapy that would greatly shift the benefits to future homeowners: Let the housing market crash.” In other words, let the market correct itself. Anthony B. Sanders, a professor of real estate finance at George Mason University states, “If we keep trying to stimulate the market, that’s the definition of insanity.” The same notion can be applied in the financial markets. Stocks have been volatile for the past few months and have seen many triple digit swings, further adding to its instability. Some economists and business analysts including myself believe we need to see a drastic period of capitulation, or crash, before any market bottom can be achieved, perhaps a drop of 10-15% from current levels. Markets have been rattled by economic data on the home front as well as European debt issues. Every upswing seems to be followed by a harsh pullback. This will continue until the S&P reaches levels seen in early 2009. Billions of dollars are waiting on the sidelines for this exact moment. Many experienced fund managers are salivating at the chance to invest their mounds of cash in the market, but only after “Armageddon.” So in summary, let the housing market crash. Let the stock market crash. Let the economy fix itself like it has in the past and let’s stop spending our tax dollars prolonging the inevitable.

Borrowed Thunder George Dauphin

A

fter four years of legal maneuvering by Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips ruled that the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is unconstitutional. To any citizen with a modicum sense of decency, this is no surprise. The real surprise is that it came as a result of the work of the LCR, a gay group so radical in their conservative zeal, they would rather work within the Republican Party, which has made it abundantly clear they are not welcome. The LCR seems to have stolen the thunder from traditional gay activists, such as the Human Rights Campaign, which is caught up in managing the useless and pointless boycott against Target. The ruling against DADT is one of a series of victories by Log Cabin Republicans on behalf of gay Americans. They have also been active in the campaign to repeal Proposition 8 in California. The LCR, with only 19,000 members across the country, seems to be kicking ass, while traditional gay activist groups and the Administration are kissing ass. One of the lawyers who successfully argued against Prop 8, is conservative Ted Olson, one of few Republicans sympathetic to the LCR. Olson, in his eloquent Newsweek article, “The Conservative Case for Gay Marriage,” indicts the Obama Administration’s lukewarm attitude in advancing gay rights: “We do not tell persons who have

While I wished Mr. Olson’s statement was the type of thing we could hear from the HRC, they have in fact published, this week, an open letter to the president and the senate to urgently repeal DADT, albeit a hastily written letter (see link). Perhaps the HRC is too busy organizing parades and selling mugs with their logo on it. I bought a sweater from them a few years ago,

have been accusing Log Cabin Republicans of being in. It will be interesting to see if the Administration decides to appeal Judge Phillips’ ruling. If that happens, any pretense on the part of Obama that he is on our side will no longer be taken seriously. The Democrats have controlled both houses and the White House for the past two years, and in spite of that, have failed to pass legislation overturning DADT. They promise to have a bill on the President’s desk by the midterm elections. With those Scott Schmidt, one of the activists elections just a few weeks for the Log Cabin Republicans (Los Angeles) away, that is now highly and, while I love my sweater, if I were in a po- doubtful. their constitutional right to free speech – seems to be flawed. Free speech is a questionable “right” for those serving in the armed forces. Judge Phillips’ ruling is just as peculiar. By stating that the DADT policy has a “direct and deleterious effect” on the armed services, she seems to be telling the federal government how to manage the military. The Administration, in this case, may be right in stating that the judge has overstepped her legal mandate. To me, DADT is not an issue of management or freedom of speech, but an issue of freedom of being. What is offensive, and I would assume, in my layman’s logic, unconstitutional, is that DADT establishes, or perpetuates, the concept that gay men and women are not in the same “class” as other Americans. It creates a sub-class of citizens, just as the Defense of Marriage Act does, reminiscent of past laws applied to Native Americans and African Americans, long struck down by the courts. For now, let us give credit where credit is due. Congratulations to the Log Cabin Republicans on a job well done. Thank you for your efforts.

Cleaning Up Your Calling Card By Brian McNaught

M

any of us have had the experience of seeing a dog leave its calling card on the sidewalk and its owner thoughtlessly fail to clean it up. Then we watch people step into it, knowing that for the rest of the day the ill effects will be endured by others. Sometimes the pile is small but nevertheless a nuisance, such as the one left this week by American Express, Booze Allen Hamilton, Chartis, and The New York Times in their 2,000 word promotion of “Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion,” in the Times’ Sunday Magazine. Not once did the author, Jason Forsythe, use the word “gay” in the very expensive advertising supplement. He used the acronym “LGBT” a couple of times, but most international readers of The New York Times don’t know that LGBT means “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.” I’m not an “LGBT.” I’m gay, and the impression given by the ad suggests that AE, BAH, C, and TNYT are too uncomfortable or embarrassed to say my name even in a piece touting their successful efforts at diversity and inclusion. They left a small pile, but lots

of people will step in it, and track it home. There are also really big piles left on the sidewalk, such as the announcement by the Reverend Terry Jones that he was going to burn a copy of the Koran. This pastor of a tiny congregation in Florida got international attention, thanks to the self-serving behavior of 24-hour news stations, and will undoubtedly be rewarded with a lucrative book offer. He has recently pledged that he wouldn’t burn the Koran, but his anti-Muslim bias, and his silly attempt at getting 15 minutes of fame has resulted in three deaths. Muslims across the world have stepped in the big mess that Jones made, and have rioted in protest. One of my most frustrating life experiences is witnessing the injustice of innocent people paying for the crimes of others – children at the hands of pedophile priests, shoppers killed by a suicide bomber, and minorities emotionally and physically maimed by ignorant, frightened persons, including those posing as pastors or working as corporate managers. In the gay community, one such ignorant, possibly frightened, person left his calling card in history in an op ed piece, entitled continued on page 25

The Evil That You Know

Floridian Gubernatorial Candidates Pose Tough Decisions for LGBTs

B

ack in June of 2010, Alex Sink, currently CFO for the State of Florida sent shockwaves through the gay community by revealing that she did not support gay marriage. She was Equality Florida’s unofficial pick for Governor and had received a lot of support from gays who believed she would support repeal of Amendment 2. It was not looking good for her when another gay rights group, StandUpFL, decided to actively campaign against her and support Democratic underdog Michael E. Arth. However, Rick Scott won the Republican Primary race and he will be the one facing off against Alex Sink in the general election. Michael E. Arth remains as a thorn in the side of both candidates. Now LGBT voters are looking at a situation that somehow eluded them up until this point – there is not a single candidate running for office who has

overturning Amendment 2 on their agenda. Amendment 2 is the harsh anti-gay marriage law that was passed by the very same folks who passed Proposition 8 in California. However, Amendment 2 is far more complicit in limiting the civil rights of gays and lesbians because it also forbids civil unions, equal taxation or any other kind of recognition for gay couples. While one could argue that CA’s Prop 8 was meant to protect something – the same cannot be said for Florida’s marriage amendment. Amendment 2 is obviously only meant to take away rights from a specific class of people. No other item on the so-called gay rights agenda in Florida can move forward with this law in place. This leaves LGBT voters with the following options: 1) Suck it up and vote for Alex Sink knowing that she supports repealing

C A MPAIGN Scott. Scott is not really from Florida. He’s from Texas, Missouri and Tennessee. He did not move to Florida until last year. His Lt. Gov. running mate is a woman who was not even born in the USA – she hails from Trinidad. His company, Hospital Corporations of America (HCA), has been investigated by the US Gov. for Medicare fraud and they plea-bargained the case against them. They paid 1.7 billion dollars in civil settlements including $500 Million to whistleblowers suing them under the False Claims Act. On gay rights, Scott is clear that he is against gay marriage but on other issues he is vague. In the “Family Values” section of his website, he lists only two items. He is against abortion and against gay marriage. Apparently, Scott’s family has no other values – just those two “nays”. There are, however, other clues as to where he stands on equality and they point to something even less heart-warming. Take for instance, another lawsuit against one of Scott’s companies, Solantic Healthcare Clinics, where 7 people filed a suit for discrimination and walked away with a pay-off instead of legal victory. What basis were they discriminated on? They were not “mainstream enough” as per Scott’s rules for the clinic’s corporate image. Some were too old, some were too fat and they were let go for their physical appearance. Perhaps the biggest indicator of just how anti-gay Rick Scott is can be derived from what he said during Primary Election de-

A N A LY S I S bates against Bill McCollum (occasions that Scott avoided like the plague). Scott painted a picture of McCollum as a pro-gay liberal flipflopper. This is bizarre at best because McCollum, as Attorney General hired the infamous George Rekers to the tune of $120,000 to testify in Florida courts against the fitness of gays to be parents. In this 120K rant, Rekers also revealed that Native American parents and deaf people were unfit to parent as well. So, to recap, probably the most heinously anti-gay lawyer in the State of Florida is “too pro gay” for Rick Scott. His Democratic opponent, Alex Sink, is at least for civil unions, but although she’s not a big corrupt billionaire like Rick Scott, she supposedly got herself one of those multi-million dollar “golden parachutes” that became targets of bailout-haters nationwide last year. Alas, there’s Michael E. Arth, who is plenty ready to build homes for the homeless, support full equality for gays and bring “ranked choice voting” to America. Unfortunately, Arth also has a bitter score to settle with Democrats after he was “frozen out” of the initial primary selection process. The situation remains unclear to me, but he’ll tell you all about it on Facebook. Pending some gay airport sex scandal on Scott’s part or video of Alex Sink tossing pipe bombs onto BP rigs, it looks Michael E. Arth will not garner the votes, funding or attention needed to pose a threat. Better Luck next time Gay Florida!

Gilda’s Club

Cancer Networking for Gay Men By A. Sebastian Fortino

C

omedienne Gilda Radner’s voice, wit, and laughter were taken from us far too soon when she passed away from ovarian cancer in 1989, at the age of 42. Her husband, actor Gene Wilder, used her untimely passing to create Gilda’s Club. “At Gilda’s Club South Florida we provide support and educational programs for anyone affected by cancer. That includes people diagnosed with cancer, their family, friends and caretakers,” said Shelley Goren the CEO of the local chapter. “Anyone is eligible to come here for any of our activities and programs free of charge to help them through their cancer, in and out of treatment. We even have programs for people who have been healthy for a year but don’t want to loose touch with the organization.” Goren has worked with non-profits here in South Florida for the past 30 years, and

Gilda’s Club for the past three. She has also worked with such compassionate organizations as the Children’s Home Society and Broward House. “On a large scale,” said Goren, “we could have 50 to 80 people in a program. We also offer smaller support groups, sometimes with only a handful of people.” One such smaller group is the Gay Men’s Networking Group which works with gay men who have been diagnosed with cancer, their loved ones, and caregivers. It has been in operation for two years. Goren says the group has been quite a success. Mitchell Rosenwald, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Social Worker, is the facilitator for the Gay Men’s Networking Group. He is also a full time professor at Barry University. “My work at Gilda’s Club is part time,” said Rosenwald. “In addition to the gay men’s group there are also two other groups for men. There is a monthly men’s dinner and breakfast.”

Of the Gay Men’s Networking Group, Rosenwald said that the idea originated with Shelly Goren. “We had a prostate group which didn’t have many gay men attending. There was a gay group a few years before,” said Rosenwald, who has been there almost three years. “I also think going forward there should be a lesbian’s group to discuss their cancer issues.” As a social worker he outlines three purposes for the group – mutual support, education, and a social aspect. Some of the education for example is sharing different treatment options for different cancers. The groups meet for 90 minutes. Membership for an initial prostate cancer group was fairly low. Gilda’s Club canceled it and replaced it with the gay men’s group. They also extend outreach beyond their Fort Lauderdale facility. “About a year and a half ago at the old GLCC we had an oncologist come in and speak to the group,” said Rosenwald. “We also have medical professionals contribute to the meetings – a few times a year. When the doctors are there it’s more of a Q&A.” Since working with the group Rosenwald says he has noticed some disparities in cancer awareness in the gay community. “So much attention has been devoted to HIV,” which Rosenwald admits is necessary and important. “However, what about other health challenges that gay men face? There is another coming out process in terms of cancer diagnosis. Oftentimes people think if you loose weight you have HIV, not that you are going through radiation or chemotherapy.” As with any health issue, communication and having other people to talk to, is a remarkable healing therapy. A positive influence can help the body begin to heal itself. “What works for many men is to think ‘Cancer doesn’t have me, but I have cancer.’ It’s a key ingredient for both their physical

and mental health,” added Rosenwald. “We’ve been a part of Gilda’s Club for the past three months,” said Dr. C. Earl Fox, M.D., Ph.D, who is currently Executive Director with the Florida Public Health Institute and a Research Professor at the Miller School of Medicine. “There are about 15 to 20 people active in the group. There are a lot of gay men in the Fort Lauderdale area who don’t even know it exists. I’m a physician, and I didn’t even know such a group existed until a friend of mine who went through prostate cancer and elected to have the same surgery I am going to have in a few weeks encouraged me to go.” The “we” Fox speaks of is his partner of 19 years, Steve Weldon, who supports his partner by being active in Gilda’s Club. Fox’s clinical training is in pediatrics, but his board certification, and experience is in preventive medicine and public health. “I was head of the health department for the state of Alabama,” Fox told SFGN. “I also ran a federal agency for the Clinton administration in Washington, for the agency that headed up the Ryan White program.” Fox was diagnosed with prostate cancer over four years ago when he was on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University. For the past few years he and his physicians have been watching the cancer. “It was recommended that I not watch the cancer anymore,” said Fox, who explained that after diagnosis some patients are advised to watch and wait until finalizing plans for treatment. “After my fifth continued on page 27

Fort Gay Too Queer! Microsoft Mix-up Boots Gamer By Vicki Smith

Associated Press MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Microsoft Corp. and the chief rules enforcer for Xbox Live are apologizing to a small West Virginia town and a 26-year-old gamer accused of violating the online gaming service’s code of conduct by publicly declaring he’s from Fort Gay – a name the company considered offensive. The town’s name is real. But when Moore tried to tell Seattle-based Microsoft and the enforcement team at Xbox Live, they wouldn’t take his word for it. Or Google it. Or check the U.S. Postal Service website for a ZIP code. Instead, they suspended his gaming privileges for a few days until Moore could convince them the location in his profile, “fort gay WV,” wasn’t a joke or a slur: It’s an actual community of about 800 in Wayne County, along West Virginia’s western border with Kentucky. “At first I thought, ‘Wow, somebody’s thinking I live in the gayest town in West Virginia or something.’ I was mad. ... It makes me feel like they hate gay people,” said Moore, an unemployed factory worker who plays shooters like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty and Ghost Recon under the gamertag Joshanboo. “I’m not even gay, and it makes me feel like they were discriminating,” said Moore, who missed a key Search and Destroy competition because of last week’s brief suspension. His team lost. Angry and incredulous, Moore contacted customer service. “I figured, I’ll explain to them, ‘Look in my account. Fort Gay is a real place,’” Moore reasoned. But the employee was unreceptive,

warning Moore if he put Fort Gay back in his profile, Xbox Live would cancel his account and keep his $12 monthly membership fee, which he’d paid in advance for two years. “I told him, Google it – 25514!” Moore said, offering up the town’s ZIP code. “He said, ‘I can’t help you.’” Mayor David Thompson also tried to intervene, but with little success. Thompson did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press but told television station WSAZ, which first reported the dispute, that he was informed the city’s name didn’t matter. The word “gay,” he was told, was inappropriate in any context. Stephen Toulouse, director of policy and enforcement for Xbox Live said that was a miscommunication. “That is absolutely incorrect” and is not Xbox Live policy, he told the AP late Tuesday. Xbox Live received a complaint, which was directed to an agent for review. “Someone took the phrase ‘fort gay WV’ and believed that the individual who had that was trying to offend, or trying to use it in a pejorative manner,” Toulouse said. “Unfortunately, one of my people agreed with that. ... When it was brought to my attention, we did revoke the suspension.” Complaints, he notes, come to agents with no contextual information, including who the suspected offender is or what games they play. The agent simply looks at the language and determines whether it complies with policy. The Xbox Live player’s contract says users cannot “create a gamertag, avatar or use text in other profile fields that may offend other members,” and lists potentially dan-

gerous topics such as drug use, hate speech and racial, ethnic or religious slurs. The Code of Conduct, however, says players may use words including lesbian, gay, bi and transgender to express relationship orientation in their profile or gamertag. Toulouse contends his team rarely makes mistakes but acknowledged, “Absolutely, a mistake was made here, and we’ve updated our training to account for that.” Fort Gay has been a community since 1789, when 11 people tried to establish a settlement at the junction of the Tug and Big Sandy rivers, across from what is now Louisa, Ky. It was incorporated as Cassville in 1875 but was simultaneously known as Fort Gay until 1932, when town leaders changed it to the latter for good. Wayne County historian Herb Dawson said there are several theories about the reason for the change, including the railroad company’s insistence that it couldn’t have two Cassvilles on the same route. There was already one in Monongalia County. One newspaper claimed the post office found itself in a similar situation, while

some locals offered a romantic theory about a Civil War nurse named Gay who won the heart of the townspeople while caring for wounded soldiers. There is no evidence to support any of the stories, Dawson said, and no consensus on which is true. But one thing is clear: The word “gay” was not always politically charged. In both the 1800s and the 1930s, “gay” was commonly understood to mean happy, lively or merry. Nor is Fort Gay the only town in West Virginia with “gay” in its name: There’s a Gay in Jackson County and a Mount Gay in Logan County. None of that, however, matters to Josh Moore, who just wants Microsoft and Xbox Live “to acknowledge this is a real place with real people in it.” Toulouse said he will contact Moore and apologize. Staying ahead of slang and policing Xbox for offensive is a constant challenge, he said. “In this very, very specific case, a mistake was made,” he said, “and we’re going to make it right.”

Over the years, starlets such as Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, and later, Farrah Fawcett and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, graced the pages of calendars hung in gas stations and barber shops. LIBERACE MUSEUM TO CLOSE ITS DOORS OCT. 17

After 31 years of operation, the Liberace Museum will close its doors Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 to focus its monetary contributions on the Liberace Foundation.

D

ue to the economic downturn and the decline in the number of visitors, the Museum is forced to close the space and focus primarily on its dedication to the Foundation and the donation of scholarships. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, we feel it is important to close the Museum to ensure the future of the Liberace Foundation and to keep the legacy of Liberace alive through its continued scholarship program,” said Jeff Koep, chair of the Liberace Foundation. The memorabilia at the Liberace Museum will be maintained. A national touring exhibit is planned, and details will be announced at a later time. South Florida would be a likely venue, representatives acknowledged.

“The traveling exhibit is an exciting way to share the life and legacy of Liberace while providing an income stream for the Foundation,” said Koep. “In no way do we intend to close the doors and not continue to explore options that will allow us to reopen at a later date.” The Liberace Museum is a non-profit organization that supports the mission of The Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts which has funded scholarships since 1976. The scholarship program has provided nearly $6 million in scholarships, touching the lives of more than 2,700 students from 120 of the nation’s premier institutions.

San Miguel de Allende Mexico Andrew Collins

By Andrew Collins

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

R

eminiscent in historic ambience, manageable size, mountainous elevation, and dynamic arts scene to Santa Fe, New Mexico, the small city of San Miguel de Allende was established in the mid-16th century and has becoming increasingly popular in recent years as sophisticated, friendly and a distinctive vacation getaway. Although San Miguel has little in the way of gay nightlife, this city of about 60,000 has a strong GLBT following dating back to its popularity with counter-cultural types in the 1960s. Today visitors will find several gay-owned inns, shops and restaurants. The popular travel memoir On Mexico Time, written in 2000 by Tony Cohan and

based on his time living in this magical city, helped boost San Miguel’s already considerable following with expats from the United States and Canada. These days, charming San Miguel represents one of the better travel bargains in the Western Hemisphere. With Mexico enduring unfortunate (and largely unfair) negative stereotypes related to the drug violence plaguing its borders, and U.S. and Canadian currency strong against the Mexican peso, the cost of visiting here is extremely reasonable. The city is well known both for Spanish language immersion schools and culinary classes, but it’s also a lovely place to simply relax and explore for a few days – or even weeks (many long-term vacation rentals inside historic casitas and houses are available). San Miguel is a 3.5-hour bus ride from

bustling Mexico City, and many visitors here fly in and out of the capital. There’s also a small, relatively new airport 40 miles away in Queretero (with limited direct flights from Houston and Detroit), and an airport 110 miles away between the cities of Leon and Guanajuato, which has direct flights from Chicago, Dallas, and Houston. Keep in mind that flights to Mexico City are far more affordable than to these regional airports. Additionally, inexpensive buses provide service from Mexico City and its airport. Regional buses in Mexico are operated by private lines and have climate control, TVs, comfortable seats, and clean bathrooms. Reliable companies serving San Miguel de Allende include Primera Plus and ETN. Within the city itself, it’s very easy to get around and explore sites on foot. Taxis are

also cheap, safe and plentiful. San Miguel is the central part of the country, which is known for its beautifully preserved colonial silver-mining cities – other prominent ones include Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas. It’s hundreds of miles from any of the drug or political violence alluded to earlier and is situated at an elevation of 6,500 feet, which translates to cool temperatures, clear air and sunny skies. Throughout the year, high temperatures hover around 70 to 80 degrees, and with lows dipping into the 50s and – in winter – even the lower 40s. Rainfall is highest in summer, as afternoon thunderstorms are a regular occurrence from mid-June through mid-September. Out tennis player… at a Catholic college? By Dan Woog

T

roy Smith grew up gay and halfblack in a small Pennsylvania town. A highly recruited tennis player, he attended a conservative Catholic college whose president was President George W. Bush’s director of Faith-Based Initiatives. A recipe for disaster, right? Wrong. A feast of all the good things in life is more like it. After coming out in college, Troy blossomed. He had a successful tennis career. He was elected Homecoming King. And he forged a strong friendship with Saint Vincent College president James Towey. Welcome to the face of young gay athletes, circa 2010. Life was not always easy for Smith. As a youth, he could hide his sexuality but not his biracial identity. He heard more racial slurs from hateful classmates than he cares to remember. He heard anti-gay taunts too, but they were not directed at him. He did not come out until college. Smith chose Saint Vincent not because of its religious background – he’s not even Catholic – but because of its academic rigor and proximity to home. Even before enrolling, however, he realized there would be challenges on campus. “I’m a risk-taker,” Smith says. “I knew I’d come out at some point – and I knew it would be hard. I definitely chose a tough path.” At first he played life straight. He did not

MLB Ump Ejects Fan Over Anti-Gay Slur Associated Press

V

eteran umpire Bob Davidson says he ejected a fan at Miller Park last week because the fan used a homophobic slur aimed at Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. Davidson said he decided to throw out 44-year-old Sean A. Ottow of Waukesha, Wis., in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night because he wanted to make sure Molina wouldn’t do something to escalate the situation. Davidson spoke Wednes-

from some football players. And the world continued to turn. Two of Smith’s best friends were football captains. He went out with them socially all the time. They tried to hook Smith up with their gay friends – and, when trying to make themselves attractive to women, asked Smith for advice. Smith graduated with a degree in political science – and a priceless education in the importance of living life with integrity. When he received his diploma from Towey, the president told him: “You really are a star, Troy.” Smith is proud of his academic and athletic achievements, he told the gay sports website OutSports. But he is just as proud of what he calls “the message made by my career at Saint Vincent: No matter where you are, you can fit in no matter who you are.” He entered college – a conservative Catholic college – expecting to be an outcast. He left it filled with hope and courage (and a job as executive producer of the Pittsburgh Mr. Gay competition). “I don’t stereotype or live my life with negativity,” Smith says. “I’ll go up and talk to people who call me ‘that fag.’ “I don’t think people who are racist or prejudiced or homophobic really know what life’s about. They don’t know we don’t choose who we are. They don’t understand that diversity is one of the joys of life. It’s a key to our great nation – and our world.”

Q Scopes By Jack Fertig

You are as beautiful as you feel, Scorpio! Venus is in Scorpio, tempting deep, dark passions, both erotic and aesthetic. Mercury in Virgo sextile Venus brings in critical insight and shrewd vision. Saturn is right in the middle, adding focus and structure. Put up that sling and/or take that art history class. ARIES (March 20 – April 19):Working out, tightfitting clothes and chit-chat in the bar can get you lots of places, but never very far. Superficial charm will work, but more mature and darker will help you find a solid match.Try quoting Dorothy Parker. TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):Want to please your sweetie? His or her secret desire could be a naughty, nude maid. It’s one way to get the housework done. No sweetie? Someone at work wants to put some sugar in your bowl. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Staying home and doing housework can be more fun than you expect. Take it as a creative challenge. You could also expand that creativity to some efforts in the community, or share an adventure with some nephews and/or nieces. CANCER (June 21- July 22):Write a letter to – or draw a picture of – the parents you always wanted. Then write a letter telling your real parents of all your disappointments, how they failed you and you them. Don’t mail it! Just get it off your chest and forgive everyone involved. LEO (July 23 – August 22):A serious talk about bills, accounting and fairness can save you and your housemates some decent money. Live alone? At least go over the bills and consider how your parents or grandparents got through the depression. Those pennies add up! VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Sit down and have a serious discussion about how you can economize. Better yet, make a very serious and practical plan about how you’re going to increase your earnings. It will take hard work, but you can do it! LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):Worries may be exaggerated, but still point to real problems. You have strength and value you don’t realize, and those buried talents can get you through. Critical selfanalysis should always include the positive.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):You are as beautiful as you feel, and however you feel about yourself is how the world will see you. If you need support and convincing, let a friend help you create a new look. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Trust your instincts – but only so far – for inspiration to get through the maze of politics and hierarchies that stands between you and success. Run those notions past a good friend who can improve your ideas. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):While you’re at the top of your game, new ideas and selfcriticism to hone your skills will help you to rise even higher. Suggestions and praise from admiring friends should be happily accepted, although with a grain of salt. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):Wise as you are, are you smart enough to keep ego and pride out of your own way? The more you try to look good, the less you will. Let your facts and figures do the talking and you’ll sizzle. PISCES (February 19 – March 19):Acting as (or actively seeking) the wise and well-traveled voice of mature experience can help you find passion, if not actual love. What does your partner say? New adventures are good; they don’t necessarily require a new playmate.

ignore policy and aggressively force on others his or her conservative religious beliefs, or a Human Resources professional defiantly clings to sexism and racism as his or her sole focus, or a managing director fails to discipline homophobic banter on the trading floor because “boys will be boys,” or a Chief Executive Officer cuts funding for diversity training as soon as profits drop and belts need tightening, they leave their calling card in a corporation, and it is stepped into and carried into the lives of innocent gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people who simply want to work in an environment in which they feel safe and valued. It is irresponsible of the corporation not to clean up the messes before they ruin the days of others. Attending to unwanted calling cards means keeping your eyes and ears open to what’s going on, accepting responsibility to clean up after your behaviors, and proactively addressing the negative impact your bad behaviors have on others.

nspector Seymour Pine was responsible for leading officers into the famed Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969 – thus spawning the Stonewall Riots. In recent years he has recounted the historic evening and even spoke during a discussion about the riots in 2004, and in the 2010 film “Stonewall Uprising,” which was reviewed in SFGN this past June. In recent years he has apologized for his involvement in the raid, saying that he was merely following orders. He has also admitted that at the time of the infamous raid the police were biased towards members of what was then a disenfranchised LGBT community. In those days no one had any “idea about what gay people were about,” and that police targeted gays because they allowed for an easy addition to an officer’s

prostate biopsy, the urologist recommend I do some type of treatment,” said Fox. “I have decided to do surgery, although some men elect to do less radical approaches such as radiation.” Prostate cancer is not the only type of cancer that the gay men and their loved ones are dealing with at Gilda’s Club. Lung and blood cancers are also common. Attendees talk about their needs, feelings and worries at the meetings. This interaction has become a comfort to Fox, his partner and other members. Fox admits that gay men affected by prostate cancer face a different set of issues than straight men. As it can take a man more than a year to properly heal after invasive surgery, sexual and relationship issues are often perhaps too personal to discuss in a group with straight men. “Being able to talk to other gay men about what I am facing and what I am going to go through has been a real comfort to me. Even as a physician a part of you tends to be

in denial about what’s going on,” said Fox. “By attending Gilda’s Club I realized that I had put it out of my mind for the past few years. I realized my cancer was real. Frankly, I am going to need the group when I go through recovery, post-surgery.” Gilda Radner’s strong spirit, when she battled the disease, still showed the warmth of her comedy and humor. Gene Wilder chose the name Gilda’s Club after a turn of phrase she adopted post-diagnosis. “Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I’d rather not belong to,” said Radner. However, fortunately for those that come to Gilda’s Club locations throughout the country there is a club in which they can come together in fellowship and hope. The Gay Men’s Networking Group meets the second Monday of each month, at 6 p.m., for 90 minutes. Going forward to foster cancer awareness in the LGBT Community, there will be an LGBT Action Group Kickoff Party on Tuesday, November 16.
