Turmoil at the Chorus Has a New Chorus Formed? By Joey Amato
R
umors have been escalating recently about the future of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) and more specifically, the fate of their director, Todd Wiley, who was met with a petition signed by 43 members asking for his resignation.
Included in that petition were 11 members of the FTLGMC who were informed via email by board of director’s officer Brian Garrett, that their membership in the chorus has been terminated. In the email, Garrett states “according to the FTLGMC Handbook, any insubordinate or disruptive action can lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination.”
The terminated members began to express hostility towards Wiley after he fired Gordon Roberts, assistant director of the chorus. “Roberts was dismissed this summer when he refused to do his job,” states Wiley. Roberts subsequently approached both the officers and board of directors of the chorus to garner support for his reinstatement. “After my decision was upheld by both groups, Roberts proceeded to approach our members.” Roberts was successful in his outreach. Former chorus member Michael Valdez tells SFGN approximately 30 members attending the first rehearsal of the new season, “stood up in front of the chorus, made a statement of regret, and walked out of the rehearsal in protest of the actions taken by the board of directors and Wiley.” They joined the 11 banished members at another location. Besides Roberts’ dismissal, some members in good standing were frustrated with the decision to relocate the FTLGMC to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. They called the decision “unilateral” and voiced their discontent. “Wiley has the board in his pocket. They’ll do whatever he wants,” Valdez states. The decision to relocate was made this past June by the board of director’s. According to Wiley, who at the time was the director of music for the Sunshine Cathedral, the move was orchestrated after he was asked to leave his position with cathedral because he refused to take a 50 percent pay cut. “I told the Senior Pastor, Durrell Watkins that I would be willing to accept his terms if he would allow me to find another source of income.” However, Wiley states that Watkins required him to continue working a full-time schedule at half the pay. And ultimately, Wiley decided to step down from his position with the Sunshine Cathedral. Furious continued on page 7

Tea Party Queen Says Gays Are Like Fat People Who Won’t Diet By Jarrett Terrill

efore becoming the GOP nominee for senator from Delaware, Christine O’Donnell’s credentials included studying theater at a college in New Jersey, converting to and in her own words – “dabbling in” various religions, warning kids about the “sin of masturbation” on MTV and self-starting a number of religious advocacy projects. After high school, O’Donnell (who is single) claims she slept with multiple partners, dabbled in witchcraft and engaged in binge drinking. In her junior year of college she converted from Catholicism to Evangelical Christianity and joined the College Republicans. She left the school unable to graduate. It
was at this juncture she delved deeper into religion. She began honing her success story and telling people about the way that pornography helps married persons “destroy the purity of their spouses.” Arguably her work with Concerned Women For America could qualify as political experience. CWA is a religious group that was formed in the late 70’s to protest equality for women. Today they operate mostly in opposition to gay marriage. Two years ago CWA donated over $400,000 to see that Proposition 8 would be passed in California. As O’Donnell premiered her talents for the Religious Right in 1997 she told CNN that spending on HIV/AIDS prevention was “gross” and “disproportionate” and that the spending “goes to things that we know will not prevent AIDS but will continue to spread the disease like distributing condoms in high schools.” Her talking points devolved from there with comparisons between heart disease and HIV and suggestions that “[the gay] lifestyle” is marked by its desire to eliminate consequences rather than improve behavior.

LSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, has marked the culmination of 10 years of pioneering research documenting the experiences of LGBT students with the release of The 2009 National School Climate Survey. The 2009 survey of 7,261 middle and high school students found that at school nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experienced harassment at school in the past year and nearly two-thirds felt unsafe because of their sexual orientation. Nearly a third of LGBT students skipped at least one day of school in the past month because of safety concerns.

An analysis of National School Climate Survey data over 10 years showed that since 1999 there has been a decreasing trend in the frequency of hearing homophobic remarks. However, LGBT students’ experiences with more severe forms of bullying and harassment have remained relatively constant. “In 1999, GLSEN began data collection on the school experiences of LGBT students in order to fill a critical void in our knowledge and understanding of the ways LGBT issues play out in schools. It could not be clearer that there is an urgent need for action to create safe and affirming schools for LGBT students,” GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard said. “As our nation seems to finally be taking bullying more seriously, it is crucial that LGBT students are no longer left out of efforts to address this public health crisis.”
Key Findings Include: • 84.6% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 40.1% reported being physically harassed and 18.8% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation. • 63.7% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 27.2% reported being physically harassed and 12.5% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their gender expression. • 72.4% heard homophobic remarks, such as “faggot” or “dyke,” frequently or often at school. • Nearly two-thirds (61.1%) of students reported that they felt unsafe in school because of their sexual orientation, and more than a third (39.9%) felt unsafe because of their gender expression. • 29.1% of LGBT students missed a class at least once and 30.0% missed at least one day of school in the past month because of safety concerns, compared to only 8.0% and 6.7%, respectively, of a national sample of secondary school students. “A look at the data reveals some gains in the availability of resources and supportive educators, thanks in part to GLSEN’s work and that of educators and advocates across the country committed to safe and affirming environments for all students,” said Dr. Joseph Kosciw, GLSEN Senior Director of Research and Strategic Initiatives. “Nevertheless, it is still the minority of LGBT students who report having sufficient support in school, which may explain why we have not seen greater improvements regarding in-school victimization. Without greater leadership and commitment to addressing anti-LGBT bias and behavior, we likely have a long way to go before we see significant change,” Kosciw states. GLSEN’s biennial National School Climate Survey is the only national survey to document the experiences of students who identify as LGBT in America’s secondary schools. Even Gay Parents Feel Pressure to Raise ‘Normal’ Kids By A. Sebastian Fortino
S
tudies based on children reared by LGBT families reveal they are just as well-adjusted as their peers and classmates, raised by “straight” families. Some studies have even revealed that the children of LGBT families often exhibit stronger academic skills, and perhaps due to the accepting nature of their parents, often have less social problems. However, a new article published in the journal Family Process examines the pressures of non-traditional parents to raise straight or “normal” children. To quote the article, “Within a heterosexist culture, all children experience pressure to comply with the demands of conventional gender and sexual norms.” “The underlying assumption of research on LGBTQ families has been premised on the idea that the children of gay and lesbian people will have unique challenges because of their parent’s sexual orientation. LGBTQ people have had to establish that they are good parents by raising children who are heterosexual and gender-normative, i.e., not like them,” said Arlene Istar Lev, a Family Therapist and Social Work professor with the State University of New York at Albany who wrote the article, “How Queer! – The Development of Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in LGBTQ-Headed Families.” Despite growing awareness that sexuality is largely determined by genetics, not home environment making children “that way,” the family unit is where children learn about gender identity and the roles they are ex-
ever, their youngest son Kyle, who is about to enter school, prefers girls’ games and toys to boys,’ eschews sports with his older brother and loathes having to identify as a boy. Luz’ father is not happy with the sissy behavior Kyle exudes, which reinforces the idea that LGBT couples are expected to raise “normal kids.” As Kyle is en1997's "My Life In Pink" about a little boy who is a little girl tering school the pected to play based on birth gender. There- couple elected to take him to therapy. Like fore, it is interesting – and upsetting to note straight couples that have produced a tom– that Freudian ideology creeps into modern boy or an effeminate son they wanted to psychology, and still stigmatizes gay families know if it was something they did. This is really quite a paradox. Shouldn’t whose children may identify as not straight. The article highlights the case of Luz and gay families raise their children to be whom Susannah, an interracial lesbian couple who they wish to be? Were they not stigmatized are described as being masculine and femi- as children on the schoolyard, as well? References cited in the article point out nine, respectively. Their children have a parent who wears make-up and another parent that in terms of gay fathers 10 percent of who excels at carpentry and sports. In essence, traditional gender roles are fulfilled by the couple’s personalities and identities. This means the idea of a “female” and “male” parent is thus strangely – or perhaps we should say still strangely – absorbed into the fabric of a same sex-couple. The article mentions a lesbian who decided to transition to male after having had children with a female partner. His parents were pleased, rejoicing that at least the children would have a father in the house. In terms of Luz and Susannah, their two older children – a boy and a girl – generally identify along traditional gender lines. How-
their sons identify as gay, and 16 percent of daughters raised by lesbian mothers identify as lesbian. Straight parents, after all, raise gay children and if one out of every 10 males supposedly identify as gay the number is not far off from Lev’s findings. However, perhaps the most interesting thing about the article is that these questions even persist within the home of Luz and Susannah – and other LGBT families. The couple raise their children in what is described as a comfortable environment in a liberal city. In the end, after their youngest is discovered trying to cut off his penis in the bathroom, they decide to have a talk with the school he will soon attend so that Kyle can attend school as Kylia. His older brother, seems to echo the wellrounded educational and societal outlooks that most research has discovered in the children of non-traditional couples. After his younger brother’s attempt to harm himself he said to his parents, “You can’t make him suffer this way.” For more information please visit Onlinelibrary.wiley.com

Weekly Economic Roundup By Joey Amato Foreclosures Florida foreclosure activity decreased, yearover-year, for the fifth straight month in August, but the state’s foreclosure rate still ranked second highest among all states, according to RealtyTrac. One in every 155 Florida housing units received a foreclosure filing in August. That’s 2.5 times the national average. Florida accounted for nearly 17 percent of the national total, with 56,877 properties receiving a foreclosure filing. This number is a 10 percent increase from the previous month, but down 9 percent from a year ago. Two Florida metropolitan statistical areas had foreclosure rates in the top 10: Cape Coral-Fort Myers, at No. 3, with one in every 104 housing units receiving a foreclosure filing; and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, at No. 5, with one in every 111 housing units receiving a foreclosure filing. Bank repossessions, often the final step in the foreclosure process after a home fails to sell at auction, increased about 3 percent from the month before to 95,364, a record high. The RealtyTrac report comes a day after
the Mortgage Bankers Association reported that demand for home loans fell even though mortgage rates were at record lows. Also on Wednesday, real estate website Trulia.com reported that homeowners nationally slashed more than $29 billion from their asking prices in August, as they tried to lure buyers.
Unemployment Claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, dropping to a two-month low, while producer prices rose slightly more than expected in August as energy prices recorded their first increase since March, government data showed on Thursday. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits slipped 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 450,000, the lowest since the week ended July 10, the Labor Department said. The Federal Reserve is closely watching the jobs market, but is not expected to announce any news steps to ease monetary policy at a regular meeting next Tuesday. Many analysts, however, believe it will resume purchases of government debt by
year- end to keep interest rates low and shore up the economy.
Producer Price Index The Labor Department said the seasonally adjusted index for prices paid at the farm and factory gate increased 0.4 percent, the largest increase in five months, after gaining 0.2 percent in July. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected producer prices to rise 0.3 percent last month. In the 12 months to August, producer prices increased 3.1 percent, slowing from the prior month’s 4.2 percent increase. Producer prices last month were bumped up by a 2.2 percent jump in energy costs. Gasoline prices surged 7.5 percent, the largest increase since January, after falling 2.2 percent in July. Food prices fell 0.3 percent after rising 0.7 percent in July. Stripping out volatile food and energy costs, core producer prices edged up 0.1 percent last month, matching market expectations. Core PPI increased 0.3 percent in July.
Poverty The nation’s poverty rate jumped to 14.3 percent in 2009, its highest level since 1994, and the 43.6 million Americans in need is the highest number in 51 years of recordkeeping, the government said Thursday. The Office of Management and Budget defined the poverty threshold level as less than $21,954 for a family of four in 2009 and $10,956 for an individual. The poverty rate increased for all racial groups except Asians. The jump, reported as part of a regular annual Census Bureau report on income, poverty and health insurance, was not unexpected. The U.S. economy went through a very rough 2009. In 2009, the unemployment rate jumped from 7.7% at the beginning of the year to 10.1% by October. The income used to calculate poverty status includes earnings, workman’s compensation, unemployment insurance, Social Security, veteran’s payments, pensions, interest and dividends, and just about every other source of cash. *Sources include CNBC, CNN, MSN Money and the South Florida Business Journal

with his the decision,Watkins asked Wiley to leave the premises permanently. As a result, he would no longer be allowed to direct the FTLGMC at that location. “At that time, the board of directors began searching for a new location and settled on St. Mark’s,” states Wiley. Unhappy with the explanation, at the rehearsal on September 7, member Charles Hood read from a prepared script: “In light of recent events, including the termination of ten of our chorus brothers…we have respectfully asked Todd for his resignation. We can no longer support Todd.” However, “we are choosing to remain members of the chorus, but will be leaving tonight’s rehearsal now in protest.” A membership meeting was proposed to discuss the future of the chorus, where a vote will be taken in regards to Wiley and his continued involvement with the chorus. After the incident, Wiley distributed a letter to past and current membership. He states, “If you would like to borrow any music from our library, you are more than welcome to those resources,” hinting that a new chorus, formed by ousted members, was in the works. “We do not want to venture out on our own and form a new chorus,” states Sebastian Salvo, a concerned member who was recently exiled by Garrett and company. “We would love to come
together as the group we once were, but under new leadership.” In addition, Wiley is being accused of revising of the organization’s by-laws, fiscal policy and cash flow process without board approval. Wiley tells SFGN the by-laws were revised in February 2010 to include the newly formed women’s chorus and the FTLGMC’s collaboration with the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble. “This decision was made by board of directors of the organization. I don’t have the authority to change the by-laws on my own,” he states. Although Wiley is a voting member on the board of directors, he only holds one vote, far less than what is required to make such a change. The board members are comprised of chorus officers, the president of both the South Florida Wind Ensemble and Women’s Chorus’s, two community members-at-large, one FTLGMC member and Wiley. “I report to the board,” Wiley says. “I can’t make any decisions without their approval.” But despite Salvo’s plea for harmony, SFGN has recently discovered that a new chorus led by Roberts was being organized and held their first rehearsal last week at the Sunshine Cathedral, the former rehearsal space of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus. Pastor Watkins, who terminated Wiley, has also agreed to waive the $600 monthly fee usually charged to organizations to rent the space. In addition, FTLGMC board member Tom Begert Clark has since resigned. It is unknown if he will support the newly formed chorus. The first performance of the season by the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus led by Wiley will be held on December 4 at the Parker Playhouse.

e may be young, but Dustin Jacobs, principal and partner of The Meraki Agency is no stranger to the marketing industry. Before starting his own firm, Jacobs was the Director of Marketing for a marinehospitality company as well as Brand Manager for Yacht Clubs of the Americas in Fort Myers, FL. Originally from Sugarcreek, Ohio, Jacobs has always had a fascination for the industry. “It is one career that you can see your results,” he states, “and I love nothing more than to see what my hard work accomplishes for clients.” Jacobs describes the marketing world as “progressive and ever-changing”, so it is important that he stay ahead of current trends. Growing up on a horse farm in rural Ohio has allowed him to incorporate his small town Midwestern values into his business. One of five siblings, Jacobs recalls his traditional country upbringing: “I liked the simplicity of the country as well as the beauty,” he states. “There is also something to be said about the morals instilled in me by my family.” The 27 year old graduate of Shawnee State University holds a Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing and enjoys the social aspect of the business. “I get to meet many influential people and also get to be involved in many different industries.” Inspired by friends and mentors Kevin Moroney and Dana Rhoden, Jacobs’ goal is to develop specialized marketing plans
for his clients in an effort to maximize their profit. “We also coordinate marketing research and create unique marketing strategies that target specific customers and audiences,” Jacobs states. Recently, Jacobs relocated to Fort Lauderdale from Fort Myers and immediately began integrating into the LGBT business community. As a member of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce “Gay & Lesbian Business Exchange”, Jacobs spends a lot of time networking with the region’s top movers and shakers. “One of the challenges I faced in Fort Myers was the very limited gay population,” which is not the case in Fort Lauderdale. “There is a comfort of knowing I will be accepted here,” he states. Jacobs devotes a lot of time advocating for animal rights and enjoys spending his down time with friends, travelling and dining. To unwind, Jacobs turns on the new Snow Patrol album and enjoys sipping a fine red wine after a hard day in the office.

He served as a public defender in Washington, D.C. before returning home to open a practice in criminal defense and civil rights law. He began his political life serving four terms as state representative from Providence’s East Side before gaining the mayoral seat. ‘Analyze That’ Pier Angelo Guidugli A Heavenly Session Transcript from God
S
orry, I am late Doctor Melfi, but I'm a very busy God. I have a Universe to run and I can't get to it because, sadly, amongst all my planets, the little one called Earth keeps pissing me off. It is overpopulated by annoying people who do nothing but fight among themselves like kindergarten children. I'm so sick and tired of them, always asking for favors they do not deserve, using my name in vain, and constantly twisting, to their own advantage, what it really means to believe and have faith. I do not need to be adored or prayed to. I would be satisfied if the Earthlings just loved, helped and respected each other. Is that too much to ask? I wish they would leave me alone. I'm just getting too old for this. This may be a collateral effect of their so called global warming, or junk diets, but recently they have been going bonkers- especially those Americans. Someone should tell them it is not Holy Water in the bottles of designer water they carry around. If they did not pollute everything they touched, the one coming out of the kitchen tap would be just fine, and cheaper, too. I asked my son Jesus to go back and straighten them out a bit. "Are you out of your bleeding mind, Father? I am not crazy,” he replied. How can I blame him? I would not go back either. Besides, Homeland Security, or Arizona, would not let him in. Not with his foreign accent, his lack of a visa or credit history, his socialist philosophy and his 60's BC looks. Not to mention the bong. They might even think he is gay. He never got married, you know. He preferred to hang around the gardens of Palestine with 12 other men. I'm just saying... America is a lost cause that started out so
well. They had a brand new country with open doors – religious tolerance, inalienable rights, unquestioned freedoms, and the pursuit of happiness. Even the ingenuity of a new exciting experiment called Democracy. I was impressed; probably should have thought of it sooner. Unfortunately, they started falling apart at the seams. While on one hand they carried the Bible – I did not write it by the way – they were praising and thanking me for the Universe while using guns on anything that moved. First, they wiped out the natives, and then they moved on to the slaves they imported from Africa. They made women second class citizens and proceeded to discriminate against the various ethnic groups that came to the new country looking for a better life – using slurs like Dago, Jap, Chink, Wop, Spics, Kikes and at the same time using them as cheap labor to build great cities and flying objects. They got into countless wars, one at least justifiable, but became fat and rich. They contracted the ultimate cancer: Hate. Even I can't find a cure for it. Sometimes when I think
it has been conquered I see it morph into something new and more lethal. They have no idea how many countries, planets, universes I have to keep an eye on. Do they really think I have time to bless just ‘America?’ They are not special or different from any other country, just more arrogant. They even tried to bribe me by putting "In God We Trust” on their dollar bills. Yeah, right, like I want to invest in their dollars. And then what? Everybody up here wants
Euros or Kryons. Even you... I tried to change things. I banished Jerry Falwell to a real Bible hard labor only to see a bizarre hillbilly redneck called Rev.Phelps come out of the trailer park to spread more hate against homosexuals, military funerals, and Jewish schools. He has a web site called www.godhatesfags.com. I am about love. I have no time for hate. Being God I am bisexual. I created both heterosexuals and homosexuals for diversity, beauty, and variety. And it controls population growth, too. Don’t they get that? They are so obsessed with sex. I should have done away with it. Next time I'll put sperm in fruit. The man goes to Publix, comes back home to the wife and says: "Eat a Peach” and nine months later she gives birth to a baby. But that's hindsight. Preachers, talk show hosts, and politicians keep referring to me as if I was their pal and shared their beliefs. Who are they kidding? I never approved their racism, intolerance, hypocrisy, homophobia, islamophobia, or anti semitism. I have never even appeared on any of their Sunday talk shows. HonestIy, don't want to either. Where did I go wrong? Am I a bad God? I used to think I was fabulous. Why do you never say a word Doctor Melfi? It never stops. This month, another dingbat came out of the woodwork, preaching from a Florida trailer park that he wants to burn the Koran. He would be the first one to be incensed if someone burned Bibles, or the American flag, on Uranus. He accomplished nothing but the media celebrated
his mindlessness. All he did was create more buzz on the electronic Hate Highway. I see that down there on Earth the mother of the zealots and charlatans is always pregnant. I think a few abortions here and there would be very useful, I am all for it. On the other hand you know what? Let them, they get what they deserve. Like when they voted for that "W" guy, not once but twice. I'm out of it. In the meantime I have downloaded the Koran, the Bible and the Torah on my new Kindle. I have to read them one of these days and understand what they are talking about. They do sound boring though. I'd rather read the latest Danielle Steele book. My hour is almost up Jennifer, I have to go. Jesus and I are playing poker with Satan and Lucifer at their place tonight, and they can't stand us being late. By the way, they are really harmless and very cool. They get such a bad rap from those earthlings. See you next week, same time, and yes, we'll talk about my mother. She wanted me to be a doctor.

Beyond Party
S
chadenfreude means taking pleasure in the failure of others, which is the Hollywood vocation and, lately, that of Democrats, as well. When you’re part of the party in power and unemployment is hovering near 10 percent, there aren’t that many occasions for pleasure. So you can hardly begrudge us the mirth that comes with watching Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell and the rest slug it out. Could it really be that O’Donnell, the GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate in Delaware, equates looking at porn with adultery and masturbation with sin? Could it be that Alvin Greene is not the most embarrassing major party nominee of the year? It could. And here’s the difference: The GOP could’ve won in Delaware. Or in Nevada. Or in Colorado. This is not about the tea party movement, at least not necessarily so. It’s about taking politics seriously. At the core of the tea party movement is the very popular and hardly irresponsible idea that federal spending is out of control, that government has gotten too big, that everything from bailouts to entitlements needs a second look and, potentially, some major cuts. I don’t know whether there’s a majority that sees it that way. The devil is in the details, and the details tend to focus on the sacred cows of American politics – Social Security, Medicare and the mortgage deduction. But certainly there’s nothing “nutty” (Rove’s description
of O’Donnell) about the core platform of the tea party movement. Indeed, by returning to the fiscal conservatism that was the heart of the Reagan message, and by reaching out to those who might disagree with “establishment” Republican positions on such issues as gun control and abortion (which are indeed nutty to a lot of people), the movement not only generates enthusiasm, but also has the potential for greater inclusiveness. The problem, in short, is not the platform but the people, not ideology but competence and qualifications. O’Donnell beat former Delaware Gov. Mike Castle because Republican primary voters
wanted to send a message to their party – and to Democrats, the media and the establishment – that business as usual just won’t do. You can talk all you want about the narrow base of primary voters (true enough). But to deny that something real is going on “out there,” which is to say outside of Washington, is silly. Nominating people who are not quali-
fied to do the jobs they’re seeking makes no sense, whether it’s tea partiers, the GOP or my own party members doing it. Cutting government is a heck of a lot harder than expanding it. Carrying out the tea party platform would require the acumen of a Newt Gingrich and the savvy of a Rove, not to mention the charisma of a Palin. Palin’s problem as John McCain’s running mate was not that she is a woman or a conservative, but that she doesn’t know a single Supreme Court opinion other than Roe, doesn’t read newspapers and still gets stuck on a Founding Father other than George Washington. An overwhelming majority of Americans think she’s not qualified to be president. If she’s smarter than they think she is, she won’t put that to a test. In the long run, a healthy democracy needs qualified and able people of every party to function effectively. The tea party movement’s failure to support candidates who meet that standard may help Democrats avert disaster, but it’s hardly a recipe for a strong political system. “Buck up,” Palin told Rove. What does that mean? This isn’t a game. It’s not a sport. The stakes are too high. I’m not supporting Alvin Greene. Some things go beyond party.

Abandoned Pet Rescue: Safe Quarters for Volatile Animals By A. Sebastian Fortino
I
n these trying times balancing household budgets in terms of human needs such as housing, food, education and clothing are of the utmost importance. However, the economy is affecting pets as well. If given the choice between feeding their children or their pets, people will obviously choose bread over kibble. This downturn in the economy has therefore seen a rise is the euthanasia of pets and drop offs to shelters. Fort Lauderdale’s Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR) has been saving the lives of unwanted, abused, or abandoned pets since 1996 with a vow to never put the animals down unless of course a veterinarian deems it medically necessary. Not all of these pets are purposefully abandoned, however. For instance, what happens to the pet of an older person, alone in the world, who passes away? As with any non-profit, the two biggest
needs are people and money. A rule was even passed in the bylaws of APR that forbade any board member from taking a salary, nor can outside business arrangements be made with contributors. That means that 100 percent of funds goes directly to the animals or the facility that cares for them. Barrie Peterson, an engineer, real estate developer, and dog lover became involved with the organization roughly three years ago. “When I came in to look at the shelter I saw a struggling organization. I wanted to offer a donation, but realized it would be better to come in and help to work with them so they could widen their base,” said Peterson, whose love of animals has extended to his daughter who is studying veterinary medicine. “Our operating budget is about $300,000 per year. Our goal is to put about 600 animals through the system.” Peterson says that in the past year and a half they have quadrupled their intake of animals.

These numbers are good news for orphaned pets. Between the humane society and animal control, Broward County puts down 20,000 rescued animals per year. “The impetus is on us to try and get them adopted,” said Peterson passionately. “We partner with the Arbor Vet Clinic, Barker’s Pet Resort, and other organizations. Since March Barker’s has adopted out 20 pets alone!” John Heyman, who recently came to Fort Lauderdale to retire, has since become involved with the group. He and his wife of 28 years Antoinette are both animal lovers who even take their pets on vacation with them. “When I met Barrie he brought me over to the shelter and showed me the facility,” said Heyman. “Each pet that comes in is medically treated, in a state of the art clinic which was recently refurbished. The pets are neutered or spade, given all their shots and a microchip, so as a person comes into adopt a pet they are completely ready to go to a new home. However, if they don’t find a new adoptive family we will take care of them for the rest of their lives.” Heyman an articulate former New Yorker with a distinguished background in finance cannot seem to retire completely. He and Antoinette initially signed on to walk the dogs, and volunteer at the site. “I thought I was retired, when I came to Florida,” Heyman said lightheartedly. “My role has changed however and it seems like I have become a public relations representative, to get the word out about Abandoned Pet Rescue for the 70 dogs and 200 cats we currently have at the shelter.” Since volunteering the couple has recently adopted Truffles, a beige and white 10-month-old puppy that came into the center after being abandoned. Antoinette Heyman describes her rescued dog as a frightened, wide-eyed shi tzu. “I asked if I could walk her a little to calm her down,” said Antoinette. “Truffles tried to get into every parked car we walked by, she seemed to say, ‘please take me home.’”
Grateful pup at A.P.R.
Currently the bulk of the site’s operating budget – a generous 23 percent – is being covered by one anonymous contributor. As with all non-profits the grass roots donations of between $25 and $50 really keeps them going, but they hope through further awareness to build a tier two of donors that are able to donate larger amounts. In terms of handling the dollars and cents of it all, Heyman approached his friend Charles Lane of Regions Bank to lend his expertise in financial management. “Upon finding out more about APR I was very impressed in the strides that they have made over the past few years as Broward’s largest no-kill shelter and all that they do with such limited funds,” said Lane. “Seeing as how they are in need to raise more community awareness around and for the shelter I agreed to personally work with them to assist in any way I could.” To that end Lane and his associate, Andrea Young are trying to develop a partnership between Regions Bank and APR. “We hope to potentially hold Saturday Pet Adoption Days at some of our Broward County locations to raise awareness for the organization.” For more information, or to make an online donation, please visit Apr.rescuegroups.org

ven though we can’t really reap the full benefits of Fall fashion, given that wool and lined jackets don’t figure much into South Florida weather, we can certainly borrow a few trends and incorporate them into our wardrobes.
For the Florida Fellows, we have to thank Macy’s for laying our foundation and Timmy Rudy, of rudestyle.tumblr. com, a personal stylist based in Manhattan for giving us insight into the hottest trends. Rudy says that a pair of motorcycle boots are “awesome,” with a pair of skinny jeans and an oversized watch.
➊ Peak Lapel Suits, a slim suit, with pants cut a little higher to show off a pair of shoes or socks in an accent color are all the rage. To get the best use out of it try it in smoky gray, olive or brown and match the blazer with a pair of jeans for happy hour.
Ben Sherman brogue boot for the boys
➋ Earth Tone & Slim Neckwear, the narrower the better, and once again this look will work in the office and out in the evening for dinner with friends or a cute Macy’s salesman! Try a narrow tie in brick, or a color that will pop in rich, deep, shades of red, blue, green, even purple and orange.
➌
Plaid & Micro-Stripe Shirts, plaid is a great staple to own, as it’s something that comes back every few years. This is one trend you can spend a little or a lot on, depending on your love of plaid. Micro stripes emphasize or create a longer line on the gents, and will pair well with a super-narrow tie.
➍ Bright Sneakers, to contrast with all the neutrals on everybody’s buzz list, pair them with a pair of colorful sneakers that will be sure to make heads turn. Throw on a fitted denim jacket and head out for an evening of fun.
➎ The Murse, or Man Purse, has become a staple in a guy’s wardrobe. Between cell phones, laptops, iPads or Kindles – and yes, some of us actually carry books – cameras and other gadgets you need one. Instead of a messenger type bag – try something with a strap that is just comfortable enough to wear under your arm. Go for a trendy color that is just safe and risky enough to be an accent! Well, we hope this style guide has been insightful! We hope to see you rocking both the basics and the trends in South Florida this Fall!

Elaine Lancaster Hosts Men’s Night Out
Peter Grimm fedora for guys and girls
Fashion Comes to Aventura Staff Reporters Palate for fall a la Chanel
For the Florida Femme Fatales, once again we have to thank our friends at Macy’s for basic wear and Jennifer Caras of Style-Me-Right.net for trends! However, both agree long silhouettes and cropped jackets will make your wardrobe fashion forward. For fun a pair of over-the-knee boots with pants tucked in, and even a jumpsuit for the super-fashion forward make the cut!
➊ Utility, Military & Tailored Menswear, slim cargo pants are hot this year paired with graphic tees and a slim leather or denim jacket. Don’t be afraid to throw in some sequins – because a little sparkle
will feminize the military, or tomboyish look. Think Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, but slimmer lines and brighter accents.
➋ Neutrals & Mminimalism, a darkly glamorous, moody aesthetic has taken over clothing and make-up palates. Grays and beiges will act as a foundation with accent colors of dusty pink, slate blue with dollops of mustard yellow.
➌
Animal, Folk or Native Prints, always seem to come back! Although this time around if you don’t want a leopard print jacket a pair of shoes, a scarf, or a bag will let your style roar. Skirts in a native pattern with sparkle is also a major trend.
➍ Hats & Vests, are both a trend and a staple. A fedora is always useful, and vests seem to come back in style every four to five years so…invest in one you see yourself wearing in a few years when the trend fades and returns.
➎
Rachel Bilson sporting hot fall trends
Knit Wear & Comfort, soft materials such as sweatshirt fabric, knit wear. and cardigans are hot items! A basic cardigan in a neutral – such as a chestnut or burnt ochre, and maybe one in a trendier color – such as deep purple or midnight blue will spice up a neutral outfit and fits the bill this fall.

Australia Drops Ban on Transgender Service Men & Women By A. Sebastian Fortino
E
ighteen years after Australia allowed gays and lesbians to openly serve in the military they repealed a ban on transgender soldiers. Medical discharges for servicemen and women who expressed feelings in terms of being transgender have been common since 1980 when the phrase “gender identity disorder” was first coined among psychological professionals. This comes because of an individual whose recent gender transition was met with officers who were anything but understanding. The person was not available for comment.
While Australia is certainly modernizing its views on transgender service people they are not the most modern. Canada, Czech Republic, Spain and Thailand not only allow transgender soldiers but they support their men and women in uniform through diversity programs. We are all aware that the US is still fighting out the issues of gays in the military. The Palm Center, which specializes in LGBT military issues, states that the military’s ban on transgender and intersex people is based on medical requirements and issues. The Palm center – since 2007 – has stated that position is based on “myths and [transgender people] posed no barrier to effective service.”

Cruising &Touring Alaska A Primer on Gay Travel in America's Last Frontier By Andrew Collins
I
recently returned from my second trip to America's largest and least populated (by density) state, Alaska. These facts aren't a big surprise to most people, but sometimes it's difficult to grasp the state's sheer dimensions – for example, Alaska is about 15 times bigger than Pennsylvania, but Pennsylvania has 17 times the number of residents. Beyond coming up with startling (and geographically geeky) trivia facts like these, it's difficult to describe Alaska's terrain and scenery without resorting to trite superlatives. It's truly a land you need to visit to even begin to comprehend. The leading highlights
for most visitors are up-close views of massive glaciers (dozens of them in some areas), a fascinating array of wildlife, and North America's highest peak (20,320-foot Mt. McKinley, in Denali National Park). Alaska also offers some of the world's most exciting kayaking, fishing, rafting, hiking and camping (not to mention dog-sledding). This is a state rich in history – from indigenous culture to tales of Russian trappers and U.S. gold-fortune seekers. And the abundance of delicious fresh seafood makes this a terrific dining destination. Alaska is ideally suited to outdoorsy travelers, but – thanks to cruise ships and scenic railroads – it's also relatively easy to enjoy the natural beauty from
a comfy and controlled environment.
Is There a Gay Scene in Alaska? Let's put it this way: I wouldn't recommend traveling to Alaska expressly to partake of gay nightlife, or meeting other "family." Anchorage is a large, modern city with a couple of gay bars, including the extremely fun and friendly dance club Mad Myrna's – you'll also find some excellent museums and many stellar restaurants in Anchorage. The state's second largest city, Fairbanks, has a small but active GLBT scene, some of it tied in Alaska's oldest college, the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Juneau, with a population of about
30,000, is the state capital and is generally considered the most progressive city in the state – a fair number of gay folks live here, and bars and restaurants are generally quite friendly. Also noteworthy is tiny but funky Talkeetna, midway between Anchorage and Denali National Park. This cool little village is a great base for exploring Denali and a haven of free-spirits (it was the inspiration for TV's Northern Exposure). Throughout Alaska, and especially around Anchorage, you'll find many gay-owned and gay-friendly inns and B&Bs. There's a good list of these at PurpleRoofs.com. P
opular Alibi bartender Scot Newell proved a little imagination is all it takes when he knocked off top bartenders from Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles on Sept. 12 to take top honors at the Palm Springs Cocktail Challenge finals. Newell bested five South Florida bar-
tenders a month ago to earn the trip to Palm Springs and won the big prize with his signature BLT martini, S’mores shot and “Palm”-egranate Lemonade. Palm Springs “social ambassador,” Bella da Ball was the emcee for the contest, hosted by George Kessinger at his Palm Springs Georgie’s Alibi bar and popular tapas restaurant, Azul. In addition to the fabulous trip to California, Newell took home more prizes— sorry, no tiara—and is now back behind the bar in Wilton Manors recreating his prizewinning cocktails for the local boys. Congratulations, Scot!

George Michael
George Michael Sent to Jail George Michael is going to jail after a British judge sentenced him to eight weeks behind bars for crashing his car into a London shop. It is the latest in a string of drugrelated mishaps for the singer, who was found under the influence and in possession of marijuana in July when he crashed his Range Rover into a Snappy Snaps store. Michael was sentenced Tuesday morning in Highbury Corner magistrates’ court, which also fined him £1,250 ($1,930). According to the Associated Press, he is likely to serve only half the time behind bars. In February 2006, Michael was found slumped at the wheel of his car at London’s busy Hyde Park Corner. Two months later, he hit three parked cars while trying to maneuver out of a parking space. Later that October he was found slumped over the wheel of his car again — this time in the middle of an intersection. Last year Michael released a statement saying he was “stone cold sober” when he crashed his car into a truck outside London.
Sacha Baron Cohen to Play Freddie Mercury Bruno star Sacha Baron Cohen is set to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury in a film to begin production in 2011. According to Deadline New York, Peter Morgan is already working on a script that will focus on the rock band’s early years leading up to their acclaimed Live Aid performance in 1985. GK Films partners Graham King and Tim Kingdom will finace the film and produce in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Productions and Queen Films. “A rights package has been set that includes the band’s tunes, including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘We Will Rock You,’ ‘We Are the Champions,’ ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and ‘You’re My Best Friend,’” reports Deadline New York. “It is unclear whether Baron Cohen will sing—I’m told he can sing—or whether Mercury’s vocals will be used. Nobody sang like Mercury, so trying to replicate him would be a tall order. These decisions will be made as a director gets hired. Mercury died November 24, 1991 of complications from AIDS. Though his death helped to remove the stigma of AIDS sufferers prevalent at that time and particularly in the rock music industry, Mercury’s last days won’t be the subject of the film.”
Shirtless Angels Protest Pope’s Visit
Men Break Guinness Kiss Record
Last week, Pope Benedict XVI paid a visit to St. Mary’s University in Twickenham, England — the town home to social networking site Gaydar. The company decided to dispatched a few of its “Warrior Angels” to greet the pope when he arrived. According to London’s Telegraph, guests coming to see the pope were met by three men wearing gold wings, Speedos, and nothing more. The men told the crowd they were pushing for the church to be more accepting of gay people. In total, about 20 “Angels” protested the pope’s visit.
Two men attempting to break the Guinness world record for longest kiss have succeeded, locking lips for more than 33 hours and raising awareness of gay rights. Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello locked lips on Saturday morning, and they kept it up until Sunday at 8:06 p.m. The two kissed to raised awareness for their “Our Lips Are Sealed” campaign, which supports LGBT equal rights. They each have boyfriends — not each other — but in August said it’s nothing more than a kiss between two men, and in their eyes, an attempt to challenge social norms. Both are students at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. Friends of Matty and Bobby took turns talking to viewers while the boys kissed. Freddie Mercury
American Idol sensation, Adam Lambert has reportedly been accused of battering a photographer in Miami Beach last week. According to police documents posted by TMZ, the pop sensation alum allegedly “wrestled the photographer to the ground forcefully” after becoming angered by unwanted picture-taking. A rep for Lambert pointed toward the singer’s Twitter account, where he recently wrote, “Battery? Nope. I attempted to grab a camera, no punches were thrown and no one was on the ground…. It was literally harmless. If embarrassment is a crime- that’s all I’m guilty of.” The Miami Beach Police Department has not responded to requests for further Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello information.

The ads feature a pair of priests that look as if they are about to kiss, with the tag line, “We Believe in salvation.” Another ad features a pregnant nun indulging in ice cream – not confession. The tag line for the latter ad says, “Immaculately conceived.” While we may not personally find the ads offensive it is easy to see why religious Britons might be offended. The ice cream company says they were not trying to offend anyone. That they merely intended to “comment and question, using satire and gentle humor, the relevance and hypocrisy of religion and the attitude of the church to social issues.” Still Britain’s Advertising Standards AuI Scream, You Scream, thority banned the ads, especially since the company intended to put them along the We All Scream for… Pope’s processional route through London. Too chicken to tell my ex about my STD Q: I need to tell my ex that I contracted a venereal disease and that I may have passed it on to her, but I can’t bear the idea of talking to her. Is it rude to just email her about this? A: One way or another, your ex needs to have this information and you have an obligation to get it to her. It’s about being honest and respectful. While the medium you use is less important, receiving such news in a brief email message could be pretty shocking. If you make the effort to actually talk with your ex, you’re showing a modicum of respect for her feelings and saying that you’re taking the matter seri-
ously. This route also gives her a chance to ask questions, some of which you may be able to answer on the spot. Nevertheless, if your animus toward your ex is too strong to pick up the phone, then go ahead and email her. Ask her to let you know that she received your news— you wouldn’t want information like this to wind up in a junk folder. Another idea, although perhaps more appropriate for those who’ve had a casual sexual hook-up, is to send one of the ecards available through inSpot.org, an Internet service for sex partners and tricks. This site will deliver messages like “I got diagnosed with an STD and you might have been exposed. Get checked out.” You can either sign your ecard or send it anonymously. Okay, now you have no excuse.

Hooray for Hollywood Mosaic Theatre Salutes the Magic of the Movies

he ins and outs of the magic that is the movies gets madcap treatment at the Mosaic Theatre in Plantation with Completely Hollywood (Abridged), a fast-paced homage to the Hollywood state of mind. Completely Hollywood (Abridged) was written by Reed Martin, Austin Tichenor and Dominic Conti of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, the troupe famous for its show, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), in which the Bard’s history plays are summed up with a football metaphor and Titus Andronicus is chronicled as a cooking show. In Completely Hollywood, (Abridged), movies get the same wacky treatment. The show references 197 movies, sometimes with extended riffs, sometimes with just a joke or sight gag. The period dramas adapted from Jane Austen novels meld with Charlie’s Angels to become an action-flick called Darcy’s Angels.Walt Disney and Akira Kurosawa team up for Snow White and the Seven Samurai. The Wizard of Oz melds with Star Wars for a futuristic fantasy. The first act dissects the principals of movie making, such as don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story, and every new movie is two old movies put together: Klute plus My Fair Lady equals Pretty Woman. The second act takes all those movie clichés and
combines them into one rollicking ride, as the three actors, cast as Hollywood wannabes, make their own movie. Antonio Amadeo, Erik Fabregat, and Christian Rockwell form a tight ensemble. The three work together seamlessly, enjoying the pratfalls, groaner lines and crossdressing costumes. Fabregat looks positively fetching in Dorothy’s blue gingham dress, with dark pigtails accentuated by a goatee. Even through the show is an ensemble piece, each actor gets chances to hog the spotlight. Amadeo is hysterical as a nerd recounting high school hi-jinks and also as a movie lover driven to pantomiming multiple suicide attempts by a voice explaining why Rocky IV is his favorite movie. Rockwell is pitch-perfect as sheriff who also happens to be Al Gore. Fabregat is comically evil as a pussycat-petting villain. Douglas Grinn’s nostalgic, detailed set is filled with Hollywood iconography: the audience walks a red carpet, past a movie marquee to enter the theatre; the floor is a re-imagined Hollywood Walk of Fame; the stage floor references the hand and footprints of Graumann’s Chinese Theatre. Ligthbox columns with silhouettes of Chaplin, Marilyn Rocky and E.T. grace the stage.
Theatre Review Completely Hollywood (Abridged) runs through Oct. 3 at Mosaic Theatre, American Heritage Center for the Arts, 12200 West Broward Blvd., Plantation. For tickets and more information, call 954-577-8243 or visit MosaicTheatre.com.

E
instein is a well trained American Bulldog that loves people. He just turned 5 in July, and is loving life and very healthy. Even though Einstein is about 100lbs he is as gentle as a Teddy Bear with people. Einstein has passed obedience school and is an excellent walker. We are asking for $100 adoption fee because he was recently neutered and he will come with his bowls, blankets, chew toys, and bathing items. We also would like to find him a home where there is no other pets. Einstein is not aggressive at all towards people, but can be territorial toward other dogs when entering a new environment. I have had Einstein since he was a puppy, and he is the most loving and low maintenance dog I have ever owned. I would keep him, but I am going to NY for Law School and could not bring him to the dorms. If you are interested in adopting Einstein please call me at 786-252-0776
