Florida Adoption Ban Will Not Be Appealed by Governor By Dana Rudolph Keen News Service

said he does not believe gay people should adopt, appeal on his own? DCF issued a statement October 12 saying the ban is now “unconstitutional statewide,” and the Third District Court of Appeal ruling is “binding on all trial courts.” A spokesperson for DCF, Joe Follick, confirmed that DCF worked with Governor Crist in deciding not to appeal. Immediately after the Third District ruling, Crist said he would no longer enforce the ban, but it was unclear whether he would ask that the decision be appealed to the Florida Supreme Court. The DCF said that it considered such an appeal “to achieve an ultimate certainty and finality for all parties. But the “depth, clarity and unanimity” of the Third District and circuit court decisions have “made it evident that an appeal would have a less than limited chance of a different outcome.” None of the three Third Circuit judges who ruled unanimously to overturn the ban could be accused of liberal bias. Gerald B. Cope, Jr. was appointed by Republican Governor Bob Martinez in 1988. Vance E. Salter and Frank A. Shepherd were each appointed by Governor Crist. (Crist was a Republican before switching to Independent in order to run for the U.S. Senate.) Salter was also honored by Pope John Paul II for his charitable service. And Shepherd was appointed to a position in the Environmental Protection Agency by President Reagan in 1981. He has also held senior positions in the conservative/libertarian Pacific Legal Foundation and James Madison Institute. DCF spokesman Follick told Keen News that the agency weighed the toll that an appeal would have on plaintiff Frank Martin Gill and his family. Gill was trying to adopt the two boys he and his partner have raised for almost six years. Gill had said in a statement on September 22 that “ending this case now” would be the quickest way for him to adopt the boys and remove barriers for other children to be adopted. continued on page 33

GetEqual Activists Disrupts Obama Rally in Gables By Cliff Dunn

A

gathering of gay rights protesters dogged President Obama as he raised money in South Florida a week ago Monday, the latest in a series of protests from GetEQUAL supporters who say the administration has failed to reverse the military’s ban on openly gay troops. That policy stands as one of the more glaring of Mr. Obama’s as-yet unfulfilled promises, and has turned into a simmering political issue heading into November’s elections. Many LGBT activists say the president hasn’t done enough, either on his own or in pushing Congress to act. While professional basketball stars such as Dwayne Wade and Magic Johnson gathered in the palatial mansion of former Heat star Alonzo Mourning, GetEQUAL advocates intruded upon the event by using air horns and vivid visual displays to try to draw attention away from what was intended to be a pleasant fundraiser. From the early spring activities of Dan Choi chaining himself to the fence at the White House, it was not the first time gay rights protesters have tried to publicly embarrass the president over his DADT policies. Over a year ago, President Obama stood at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner, and promised to fulfill a campaign pledge to end the policy. Last week, Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Mr. Obama, repeated to the HRC that the administration

would continue trying to force lawmakers to act. But as recently as last month Senate Republicans filibustered a defense policy bill that would have overturned it. Last week in Coral Gables, GetEQUAL activists would hear none of it. Their protest mobilized a strategic land, air, and sea assault on Obama’s fundraiser. Along the President’s motorcade, huge signs protesting the failure to do away with DADT intruded upon the celebration. From the bay abutting Mourning’s home, a swarm of LGBT activists arrived by boats with two 40 ft. signs and shouted via bullhorns “End the Discharges Now” and “We’ll Give When We GetEQUAL”. Then, by clockwork, more LGBT activists launched two large 8 ft weather balloons carrying 10 ft. long banners reading “GetEQUAL.org”. Those weather balloons were anchored in the water directly in front of the tent hosting the dinner reception. They were clearly visible to guests. “Regardless of the spin coming out of the White House, President Obama has the power to dramatically impact the course of civil rights history for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” said Robin McGehee, co-founder and director of GetEQUAL. “Unfortunately, all we have yet to see from the president, who the LGBT community overwhelmingly supported, is excuses, delays and passing the buck off to someone else. That isn’t change we can believe in, that’s just more of the same.”

Military recruiters told to accept gay applicants By ANNE FLAHERTY

Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON – A Pentagon spokeswoman says recruiters have been told that they must accept gay applicants, following a federal court decision striking down the ban on gays serving openly in the military. Spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said Tuesday that top-level guidance has been issued to recruiting commands informing them

that the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule has been suspended for now. Recruiters also have been told to inform potential recruits that the moratorium could be reversed at any point. Last week, a federal judge ordered the military to stop enforcing the 1993 law banning openly gay service members. The Justice Department is appealing the decision and has asked for a temporary stay.

Read the patient information that comes with ISENTRESS1 before you start taking it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet is a summary of the information for patients. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you additional information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or your treatment. What is ISENTRESS? • ISENTRESS is an anti-HIV (antiretroviral) medicine used for the treatment of HIV. The term HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). ISENTRESS is used along with other anti-HIV medicines. ISENTRESS will NOT cure HIV infection. • People taking ISENTRESS may still develop infections, including opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. • Stay under the care of your doctor during treatment with ISENTRESS. • The safety and effectiveness of ISENTRESS in children has not been studied. ISENTRESS must be used with other anti-HIV medicines. How does ISENTRESS work? • ISENTRESS blocks an enzyme which the virus (HIV) needs in order to make more virus. The enzyme that ISENTRESS blocks is called HIV integrase. • When used with other anti-HIV medicines, ISENTRESS may do two things: 1. Reduce the amount of HIV in your blood. This is called your “viral load”. 2. Increase the number of white blood cells called CD4 (T) cells. • ISENTRESS may not have these effects in all patients. Does ISENTRESS lower the chance of passing HIV to other people? No. ISENTRESS does not reduce the chance of passing HIV to others through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. • Continue to practice safer sex. • Use latex or polyurethane condoms or other barrier methods to lower the chance of sexual contact with any body fluids. This includes semen from a man, vaginal secretions from a woman, or blood. • Never re-use or share needles. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about safer sex or how to prevent passing HIV to other people. What should I tell my doctor before and during treatment with ISENTRESS? Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Include any of the following that applies to you: • You have any allergies. • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. - ISENTRESS is not recommended for use during pregnancy. ISENTRESS has not been studied in pregnant women. If you take ISENTRESS while you are pregnant, talk to your doctor about how you can be included in the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry. • You are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. - It is recommended that HIV-infected women should not breast-feed their infants. This is because their babies could be infected with HIV through their breast milk. - Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take. Include the following: • prescription medicines, including rifampin (a medicine used to treat some infections such as tuberculosis) • non-prescription medicines • vitamins • herbal supplements Know the medicines you take. • Keep a list of your medicines. Show the list to your doctor and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. How should I take ISENTRESS? Take ISENTRESS exactly as your doctor has prescribed. The recommended dose is as follows: • Take only one 400-mg tablet at a time. • Take it twice a day. • Take it by mouth. • Take it with or without food. Do not change your dose or stop taking ISENTRESS or your other anti-HIV medicines without first talking with your doctor.

Frank Schaeffer

Obama Will Triumph. So Will America.

N

ot since the days of the rise of fascism in Europe, the Second World War and the Depression has any president faced more adversity. Not since the Civil War has any president led a more bitterly divided country. Not since the introduction of racial integration has any president faced a more consistently shortsighted and willfully ignorant opposition – from both the right and left… As the President’s poll numbers have fallen so has his support from some on the left that were hailing him as a Messiah not long ago; all those lefty websites and commentators that were falling all over themselves on behalf of our first black president during the 2008 election. The left’s lack of faith has become a self-fulfilling “prophecy”; snipe at the President and then watch the poll numbers fall and then pretend you didn’t have anything to do with it! Here is what Obama faced when he took office; none of which was his fault: • An ideologically divided country to the point that America was really two countries • Two wars; one that was mishandled from the start, the other that was unnecessary and immoral • The worst economic crisis since the depression • America’s standing in the world at the lowest point in history • A country that had been misled into accepting the use of torture of prisoners of war • A health care system in free fall

“What did the Republicans, reduced to the religious right, libertarians and half-baked conspiracy theorists, do to “help” our new president (and our country) succeed?”

• An educational system in free fall • A global environmental crisis of historyaltering proportions (about which the Bush administration and the Republicans had done nothing) • An impasse between culture warriors from the right and left

And those were only some of the problems sitting on the President’s desk! “Help” from the Right? What did the Republicans, reduced to the religious right, libertarians and half-baked conspiracy theorists, do to “help” our new president (and our country) succeed? They claimed that he wasn’t a real American, didn’t have an American birth certificate, wasn’t born here, was a Muslim reincarnation of Hitler and wanted “death panels” to kill the elderly! They not-so-subtly called for his assassination through the use of vile signs held at their rallies and even a bumper sticker quoting Psalm 109:8. They organized “tea parties” to sound off against imagined insults and all government in general and gathered to howl at the moon. They were led by insurance industry lobbyists and deranged (but well financed) “commentators” from Glenn Beck to Rush Limbaugh.

The utterly discredited Roman Catholic bishops and evangelical leaders teamed up to denounce a president who was trying to actually do something about the poor, the environment, to diminish the number of abortions through compassionate programs and to care for the sick! And in Congress the Republican leadership only knew one word: “No!” In other words the reactionary white, rube, uneducated and crazy American far right, combined with the educated but obtuse neoconservative war mongers, shills for big business, and evangelical gay-hating flakes found one thing to briefly unite them: their desire to stop an uppity black man from succeeding at all costs! “Help” from the Left? What did the left do to help their newly elected president? Some of them excoriated the President because they disagreed with the bad choices he was being forced to make regarding a war in Afghanistan that he’d inherited from the worst president in modern history. Others stood up and bravely proclaimed that the President’s economic policies had “failed” before the President even instituted them! Others said that since all gay rights battles had not been fully won within virtually minutes of the President taking office, they’d been “betrayed”! (Never mind that Obama’s vocal support to the gay community is stronger than any other president’s has been. Never mind that he signed a new hate crimes law!) Those that had stood in transfixed legions weeping with beatific emotion on election night turned into an angry mob saying how “disappointed” they were that they’d not all immediately been translated to heaven the moment Obama stepped into the White House. Where was the “change”? Contrary to their expectations they were still mere mortals! The President’s critics left and right all had one thing in common: impatience laced with little-to-no sense of history (let alone reality) thrown in for good measure. Obama’s critics let their ideology define their reality rather than allow for reality to define their ideas. Guest Column

With Equality on the Line, Your Vote Is Critical By Michael Emanuel Rajner, BSW

C

inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), successfully repeals the military’s homophobic policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and continues to not only advance other issues of equality, but also increase efforts of equity and parity for LGBT-Americans as it relates to our nation’s healthcare systems. But in order to achieve these goals, we as a community, must make certain that our champions are elected. On the federal level, I must highlight the races for Florida’s US Senate seat and the 22nd Congressional District (Broward & Palm Beach Counties). First, let’s begin with Florida’s US Senate seat currently occupied by right-wing conservative Senator George LeMieux, who was never elected to office. LeMieux was appointed to the US Senate by Florida Governor Charlie Crist who is now campaigning like the biggest flip-flopping political whore to get elected to the US Senate. Crist’s appointee to the US Senate has continually railed up against the rights of LGBTAmericans. This is the same Charlie Crist who supported the campaign of John McCain and Sarah Palin, and Crist has continuJarrett Terrill

onservative right-wing extremists are working harder than ever to get elected and trample on the rights and hopes of the LGBT community. While many of us may be angered and frustrated with the slow progress for equality, we must not allow that anger and frustration translate into voter apathy in the November 2 General Election. Whether you vote by absentee ballot, mail, early voting, or at your designated precinct, our community and other fairminded Floridians must vote to keep our hopes and dreams not only alive but in the realm of possibility. Over the past several years, I have made many visits to Washington DC and Tallahassee to lobby for LGBT and HIV/AIDSrelated legislation. Each visit is exhaustive, yet, each time I have a greater sense of pride with our Democratic delegation who proudly take a stand to be a champion for our community. Even Blue Dog Democrats such as US Senator Bill Nelson and US Representative Allen Boyd are engaged and receptive to make certain the US Congress passes an

Kendrick Meek (L) and Charlie Crist (R) speaking to Broward County residents this year. Broward County is most affected by cutbacks to ADAP funding.

ally failed to champion efforts to advance equality for LGBT-Floridians while serving as a Florida State Senator, Commissioner of Education, Attorney General or Governor. Just last month, Crist has guaranteed that Florida will continue to teach AbstinenceOnly Sex-Education and continue to alienate LGBT-youth during a time when HIVinfection rates among gay men continue to climb. In just a matter of days after the election, Crist will authorize the termination of access to life-saving HIV-medications for thousands in Florida to the state’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). People living in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties are expected to incur the majority of the impact. In 2008, when our community failed in a fight to defeat the amendment banning marriage equality and civil unions, Crist was often seen grinning for a camera while campaigning to support the passage of the ballot measure. Kendrick Meek is the only US Senate Candidate who stood with our community. US Representative Kendrick Meek is working extremely hard to be our US Senator and fight for the rights of LGBT-Americans. In the US House of Representatives, Meek has continually voted to support all legislative efforts to advance the rights of LGBT-Americans and signed onto “Dear Colleague” letters and letters to President Obama calling for immediate action on issues directly impacting LGBT-Americans. I have never felt more confident that Kendrick is the man to champion equality for our community in the United States Senate.

Another critical race is the 22nd Congressional District currently held by US Representative Ron Klein. Klein, like Meek, has a solid record of support for our community. Ron’s opponent is right-wing conservative Allen West, a former US Army Colonel who was forced to retire, told me to my face, on several occasions, that he does not support the repeal of the military’s discriminatory policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” West compared our sexual identity to that of an improper hair cut. “US Representative Kendrick Meek is working extremely hard to be our US Senator and fight for the rights of LGBT-Americans”

Like Meek, Ron Klein will fight for us. But in order for that to happen, we need to make certain they are both elected. I share your anger, I share your frustration, but please vote. You have my word that if our community remains active and present during this election, without shame, I will be there with you raising all hell and holding every elected Democrat accountable to the needs of LGBT Floridians. I am with you in our Fight! Michael Emanuel Rajner is the legislative director for the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus and LGBT Representative for the Broward County Democratic Executive Committee.

Use your Words, New York Times

Comment on: ‘Former Gay Democrat’ (10/13)

T

he New York Times reported on two ‘attacks’ against gays in New York City over the past week. In one attack, nine members of the Latin King Goonies savagely beat and sodomized three men in the Bronx because they were gay. The other attack occurred when gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino spoke to a group of Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn. The article ran just two days after the Bronx beatings under the headline ‘Paladino Attacks Gays in Brooklyn Speech.’ Now, as someone who clearly remembers Paladino promising to go to Albany with a baseball bat, I was concerned. Then I read the article. Apparently, Paladino does not think that children should be ‘brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is acceptable.’ His horrible choice of words aside, he is not alone in this feeling, as almost half of the country (according to AP’s latest poll) is still against marriage equality. The Times also reported that he removed a line from his speech characterizing homosexuality as dysfunctional. The fact that those words were even in the speech to begin with could be an indictment. However, some would argue that his choice not to speak the words is a sign of good judgment. It is ultimately up to the reader to decide what they think. Or is it? Clearly, the New York Times wants their readers to accept the characterization of Paladino’s speech as an ‘attack on gays.’ But with the details of the gruesome

Bronx beating still fresh in my head, I have a hard time accepting that premise. I would even go as far as to say that using such language to describe Paladino’s remarks is irresponsible journalism and does more harm than good to the LGBT community. LGBT individuals are constantly being confronted with political issues and we need the facts to be able to defend ourselves properly. Politico ran the same story, but they used a factual headline (Paladino Disavows ‘Dysfunctional Homosexual’ Line) and cited a multitude of sources. They provided the facts to back up their claims, and their claims fell in line with those facts. The Times took an authoritarian approach to the issue in labeling Paladino’s opinion an attack. Clearly, there was a desire to stir up controversy. News organizations like the New York Times rely on provocative statements to sell papers with little emphasis on the facts. The result: the latest Gallup poll reported a record high in distrust of the mass media this year - the highest in decades. This goes to show that the caterwauling and personal attacks that have replaced rational political discourse in the current media landscape are not effective. If we characterize a difference of opinion as an attack, we shut down all dialogue and get nowhere. Everyone should be allowed to express their opinions without fear – especially those who do not agree with us. The last thing we need is for the few media outlets that are willing to cover LGBT issues to be marginalized by lack of credibility.

Straight Paper Goes into Gay Guide Business By Richard Gary

F

Where Business Comes to Succeed. For advertising opportunities, call John Fugate: 954-530-4970

orum Publications, a division of the Sun-Sentinel, has published a diminutive glossy ‘Best of Pride’ Guide this mmonth, claiming to distribute 20,000 copies throughout greater Fort Lauderdale. The free publication is less than 44 pages, and is smaller in size then either Hot Spots or Mark magazine. The handbook sized guide purportedly features the best of South Florida’s gay and lesbian community, according to their marketing brochure reads, “from restaurants, clubs, social venues, to ‘profiles of those making a difference.’ “ The Sun-Sentinel empanelled a commission of ‘experts’ from the community to select ‘its favorite businesses and landmarks.’ The magazine claimed that their experts chose leaders, who through their civic contributions, involvement in the business community and social activism, ‘have made South Florida a top gay destination and a great place to call home.’ SFGN has learned that the Sun-Sentinel panel consisted of five persons. They are Richard Gray, who recently returned to town as a marketing consultant for the renovated Royal Palms Hotel, and other beachfront properties; Jodi Ihme, who serves as chairwoman of the NAMES Project; Linda Jain, an ‘activist’ and customer service manager for the GLCC; Jack Rutland, the ED at the Stonewall Library; and Gary Resnick, the Mayor of Wilton Manors. The Sun-Sentinel’s Pride Guide utilized this panel to select a cross-section of ‘Best-of’ categories. The guide, seemingly without direction, made choices from Best Community Hero to Best Bowling Alley and Best Holiday Display. Winners included activists Michael Rajner and Paul Hyman, paired with Joe’s as the ‘Best Barber Shop’ and Hagen Park as the ‘Best Tennis Court.’ For the privilege of advertising in the ‘Best of Pride’ Guide, the Sun-Sentinel offered the back page for $1073, and a quarter page for $245, for a one time insertion. SFGN Publisher Norm Kent lambasted the guide, stating “Forum Publications, while honorably praising noteworthy businesses and individuals, simply used the guide as a revenue generating marketing tool for their very straight publications. Our own community has a cross section of entertainment magazines, whether it is Hotspots or Mark Magazine, that do a much better job with broader circulation and more credibility. No one needed the help of the Sun Sentinel to tell us what is best in the gay community. They should be very embarrassed.”

SFGN Profile By Joey Amato

A

lthough Joe Harter may be living a life in the spotlight now, that was not always the case for the self-proclaimed army brat who relocated many times during his childhood. “Some of my earliest memories are from our apartment in Würzburg, Germany,” Harter states. “We had suitcases packed by the door so that if we had to leave in the middle of the night we could do it in very little time.” The army lifestyle may sound difficult for most, but it seemed normal to Harter. “My dad eventually decided that it wasn’t how he wanted to raise his family.” The Harter’s eventually settled in a small town in Indiana. Growing up, Harter was mostly involved in music and the arts. He describes his entire high school experience as depicted on Glee. “It’s kind of like somebody made a TV show about my high school experience in the form of Lea Michele’s character,” Harter tells SFGN. “I was that kid who took the show choir and school plays embarrassingly serious, and it’s surreal to watch a TV show about it.” After relocating to South Florida, Harter realized that working in music was his true passion. “Music is my first and truest love.” Within a few months, Harter landed a gig in a community theater production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “It was fun, and we were all performing for free because we simply loved being onstage.” That was followed by a stint with the Palm Beach Opera. His next performance will be in a play called Angel Eaters, produced by Infinite Abyss Productions at Empire Stage. “This show is much darker, a horror show being produced in honor of Halloween,” he states. Following Angel Eaters, Harter’s schedule includes spots in Cabaret and Incandenza, a solo project for which he is writing and recording an album for.

Inspired by musical influences including Smashing Pumpkins, Kate Bush,The Verve and Claude Debussy, Harter’s interests are diverse. “I think the ornamentation and florid music from the Baroque-era has been a direct influence on my own songwriting,” he proudly states. “Lately I’ve also been obsessed with experimental composer Alvin Lucier.” At only 27 years of age, Harter tells us that hard work and surrounding yourself with talented people is the key to success in the entertainment

industry. “Try to be friendly with everybody. Negative word travels much faster than positive word. Audition for everything,” he encourages, “even if you’re not sure you’re appropriate. Every audition is an opportunity to perform.” For more information on Joe Harter or his upcoming performance in Angel Eaters, Anyone can go to Empirestage.com to get information on tickets and show times.

ore than 35 sponsors and over 725 guests all contributed to making the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s 14th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner, presented by Wachovia, a Wells Fargo company, the most financially successful in the event’s history. Buoyed by a silent auction that raised over $110,000, this year’s recognition dinner grossed more than $420,000. “After Wachovia came on board as presenting sponsor, we set a very ambitious goal of $400,000, which was $50,000 more than we grossed in 2009,” says Christopher Russell, event co-chair. “To exceed that goal by a substantial amount – we are blown away and extremely grateful for everyone who contributed to the event’s success.” “The recognition dinner has become the biggest night of the year for the local LGBT

community,” added Liebe Gadinsky, the other event co-chair and a member of the Task Force Board of Directors. The Oct. 2 event returned to the Fontainebleau Miami Beach for a second year. Hosted by actor Wilson Cruz, the formal program segment, included a speech by National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey, a musical performance by jazz sensation Nicole Henry and a video showcasing the Task Force’s work and the unique relationship the organization has with South Florida. In a wonderfully symbolic moment, Ruth Shack presented the 2010 Humanitarian Award to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson. As a Dade County Commissioner in the late1970’s, Shack successfully worked to have “sexual orientation” added to the county’s antidiscrimination laws, only to see her measure repealed after a campaign by Anita Bry-

Fort Myers businessman Graham Scott, Miami Beach City Councilman Michael Congora, guest of honor, actor Alan Cumming and Elaine Lancaster ant and the Save Our Children Coalition. Sorenson, who will retire from the county commission this year, championed the inclusion of sexual orientation to the county’s antidiscrimination laws in the late 1990’s, and defended it against repeal in 2002. Cindy Brown was honored with the 2010 Community Service Award. Brown was instrumental in the successful re-launch of Miami Beach Gay Pride last. The NGLTF National Leadership Award was presented to Tony award-winning actor Alan Cumming

for his advocacy of many civil rights and HIV/AIDS causes. The Task Force donates two-thirds of the combined net proceeds to the Miami-Dade LGBT community through the GLBT Community Projects Fund administered by the Dade Community Foundation, over $203,000 last June. Grants were then awarded to 18 organizations serving the local LGBT community. Alcohol for the event was provided by Grey Goose Vodka, one of the Task Force’s national corporate partners.

By the Night Owl Italian Singer Tiziano Ferro Comes Out Italian pop star Tiziano Ferro revealed his sexuality in the new issue of Italy’s Vanity Fair, saying he’s spent many years not feeling good about himself and hopes being open will lead to a better way of life. “For a long time I haven’t felt good about myself...and after many tough years...I’ve come to the conclusion that I want to live better,” he said. Italian tabloids had published stories in recent months linking Ferro to a mystery man. Ferro said the articles hurt, but not because he was worried about being outed. “I would get very upset because I wished I had a boyfriend, but I had no one,” he said. Ferro has released four studio albums since his debut in 2002, his latest, 2008’s Alla Mia Età, has gone 10x platinum in Italy, selling more than 500,000 copies. He has recently collaborated with Mary J. Blige, Kelly Rowland and Laura Pausini, among others. His autobiography is due in bookstores in Italy by the end of the year.

Texas Councilman’s Plea to Stop Bullying Goes Nationwide By David Crary

A

city councilman in Fort Worth, Texas, has rocketed into cyberspace prominence in a video pleading with gay teens not to commit suicide and tearfully recounting his own ordeals as a bullied schoolboy. “Give yourself a chance to see how much life will get better,’’ Councilman Joel Burns says in his appeal to bullied teens, which he made during a 12-minute speech to the council on Tuesday. By Friday afternoon, the video had received more than 500,000 hits on YouTube, and Burns was being lauded on social networking sites. Burns, who is openly gay, prefaced his appeal by recounting several of the recent cases in which teens across the U.S. had

killed themselves after being targeted by anti-gay bullying. Los Angeles County public health officials and state occupational health officials have said the widespread lack of condom use on porn sets puts performers at risk for contracting diseases. This especially makes sense for a store dealing with vintage and antique pieces, that are purchased because they catch the eye. “If someone comes in and simply falls in love with a piece I lower my price. It makes for good business. Sometimes they return to purchase more from me.” The variety of colors, styles, textures, and looks at White Glove Antiques extends from vintage clothing – that would be the envy of Endorra on TV’s Bewitched, 1970s chrome sofas recalling Boogie Nights, delicate Victorian artwork, to an oversized lamp with painted harlequins from the 1950s. Some pieces are consigned from other dealers – such as a dramatic stone and iron table formerly in the Design Center of the Americas. Anti Gay AG Slammed by Civil Rights Group

LANSING, Mich. (AP) _ The conduct of an assistant state attorney general accused of harassing the openly gay student assembly president at the University of Michigan has been condemned in a resolution unanimously passed

by the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. The commission said in a statement Wednesday that Andrew Shirvell’s “conduct should not be tolerated from anyone, let alone a public official responsible for representing all people equally.’’ Shirvell started a blog in April that regularly lambasted 21-year-old Chris Armstrong as a racist with a “radical homosexual agenda.’’ Shirvell remains on personal leave. Armstrong this month requested a personal protection against Shirvell, claiming the 30-year-old lawyer frequently harassed him over a five-month period. An Oct. 25 hearing is set.

GLAAD and Facebook Work Together

Crossword Puzzle

Site Promises to Remove Hateful Comments By Joey Amato

F

acebook has been aggressively deleting all hate comments related to anti-gay bullying web posts and events that have been created to honor teens who recently took their lives. One particular event page, titled “R.I.P.: In memory of the recent suicides due to gay abuse, wear purple”, calls for supporters to wear purple on October 20. As the page quickly grew in popularity, it was flooded with messages of support for the teens and condemnation of anti-gay bullying. Unfortunately, the page also became a forum for anti-LGBT hateful speech, images and violent messages. GLAAD reached out to Facebook after being alerted of violent images and hateful comments posted to the event page. Facebook responded that they would begin to monitor the pages closely for violations of their terms of service. Now, a week later, over 800,000 RSVP’s have been received. As the number of attendees on the event page grew, so did the number of incident reports sent to GLAAD regarding the hateful speech and images posted to the page. The event page calls October 20 “Spirit Day.” The event description reads: “It’s been decided we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes and at their schools…purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag…please know that times will get better… tell your friends, family, co-workers, neigh-

bors and schools…let’s do something to change this country for once.” After this event was created, hateful comments were posted to the page included “god hates f*gs theyre b*tches i hope they all die” and “f*ggots deserve a good old lynching.” Over 1,800 emails were sent to GLAAD calling for Facebook to monitor the content or remove the Spirit Day page. Because the event page is currently functioning as a community memorial with an outpouring of support for the families of those teens as well as youth who might be facing similar anti-gay bullying, GLAAD’s digital team continued to work with Facebook and call for a solution. Facebook told GLAAD that new measures have been put in place to respond more quickly to the hateful comments. “Educating people about the lasting and damaging impacts of ignorant and hateful comments is a responsibility shared by parents, educators, organizations like GLAAD, and services like Facebook. We take our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities very seriously,” said Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes. “We have policies that prohibit hateful content and we have built a robust reporting infrastructure and an expansive team to review reports and remove content quickly. In addition to responding to reports, we have automated systems that use a number of factors to flag content that might violate our policies, so we can review and take it down as quickly as possible and before it’s reported,” he said. Please RSVP to the event as attending and help monitor the page for antiLGBT speech. If you find words or images that violate Facebook’s terms of service, please take the following actions: Click “Flag” under the comment or photo; Click “Report” to report it as abusive; Choose “Contains hate speech or attacks an individual”, then choose “Targets based on gender or orientation”. Your reports will be sent to Facebook’s monitoring team, and they will remove violations of the terms of service– which include threats of violence and graphic photos.
