YEEP Yelps: Teen Group Creating Youth Gay Manifesto By A. Sebastian Fortino
S
easoned members of the gay community have accused many gay youths of passively and idly playing with their iPhones, Twitter, and social networking sites instead of participating in grass roots activism. However, here in South Florida, Rodrigo Labbe, president and co-founder of Youth Equality Expansion Program (YEEP) hopes to change that, one protest at a time. “We came out of the closet for a reason,” the charismatic 22-year-old Broward College political science major told SFGN, adding that “almost all of us were bullied and therefore LGBT youth should be involved in shaping their future.” “YEEP wants to shake up the ground a little bit. We realize there are a lot of local politicians nearby. Most are friendly to the LGBT community but there are still some issues being dealt with. YEEP wants to make sure they are out in the open, not discussed behind closed doors.” The group formed, in the beginning of October, has already lent their voice to the repeal of DADT, protested a local Target, challenging their support of conservative political groups, and participated in the last
week’s Wilton Manors vigil honoring gay teenage suicides. While all the speeches given by LGBT adults were moving, Labbe’s had a power that was arresting: “World you can hear me tonight! I am speaking for everyone that has committed suicide; everyone that has been bullied! It is time to stand behind them and rise up,” he shouted to the crowd. He reminded onlookers that they “should not leave it up to others to do the work they should be doing.” YEEP was founded by Labbe and fellow Broward College classmate Nicole Rivera, who both desire to create a space where young people can empower each other; raising publicly important issues. Rivera was inspired to start a grass roots organization after she attended the National Equality March last year. “I felt that I could do much more than be a vocal supporter for LGBT rights. I felt the spirit of the march and became an activist. I am also the president of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Broward College,” said Rivera, who also proudly informed SFGN that this is the only grassroots group for LGBT rights in South Florida led by youth. “Young peo-
Spirit Day Vigils on Lincoln Road & Wilton Drive Raising LGBT Teen Suicide Awareness in South Florida By A. Sebastian Fortino
O
n Wednesday, October 20 thousands of people around the country donned purple to mourn and reflect on the recent gay suicides that have shocked the nation over the past few months. Spirit Day, as it has been declared, comes from the color purple in the Pride Flag, which represents “spirit.” The color is also appropriate as it was once used in mourning rituals.
In Miami, the somber event took place on the normally lively Lincoln Road, where more than 200 people gathered on the steps of the Miami Community Church. Dignitaries such as Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower, Michael Gongora, the Beach’s first openly gay commissioner, and Police Chief Carlos Noriega addressed the crowd. “After the dignitaries spoke we marched down Lincoln Road to the plaza in front of the Regal Cinemas. There Pridelines youth sang “We Are the World,” said Victor Diaz-

ple need an outlet for activism and that is exactly who we are.” Both Labbe and Rivera wish to see an end to segregation within the LGBT community, so that the gay community can present a unified front across all genders and identities. “Integration seems to be on a sliding scale, gay men and women don’t seem to come together often enough,” said Labbe. “Therefore, YEEP wants to create a pledge of allegiance to the Pride Flag which will be integral to gay-straight alliances across the country, and pride celebrations.” YEEP hopes this will create a sense of solidarity among LGBT youth. This unification is not only for youth. “We also want to inspire the older generation to remind them that even though they
are out of the closet there are still a lot of issues remaining,” said Labbe. YEEP is in search of new members who will lend their talents and experience Alenette Opeña is one such person. Currently seeking a master’s in public administration at FIU, she met Rodrigo and Nicole last April and was inspired by their enthusiasm: “This young group has a lot of potential to make a difference in the lives of LGBT people,” Opeña said. Labbe invited patrons to support him, admitting that “we need seed money, but that is not our main draw. We want to be here for each other.” If you with to learn more about YEEP please visit, YEEP.us

We should focus on the historical conditioning we’ve been dealing with when it comes to County government which has faced far too many allegations and charges of mismanagement and ethical violations. Recently, there were some really distorted innuendoes leveled against Chip LaMarca which were dishonest and seen as negative campaigning on the part of political hacks and lobbyists who fear the needed “change” once preached by President Obama and those Democrats who rode into and hold office on his coat tails. Egalitarian activists who are members and friends of Log Cabin Republicans have found this Broward County Commission Candidate, Chip LaMarca, to be a good man, an effective leader, a challenging administrator, and a credible Lighthouse Point Commissioner who never discriminated against minorities based on the issue of sexual orientation, gender and/or heritage as claimed by some. LaMarca is the type of individual that’s needed to restore fiscal responsibility to Broward County and to enable the adoption of ethical reform without the loopholes that some existing politicians cherish as their escape hatch once they are elected to serve, not rule, the people of this county decade after decade.

Progress Is at Times, Holding Our Ground By Michael Emanuel Rajner

f you lived in South Florida during the Summer of 2007, you will certainly remember the shenanigans with former Fort Lauderdale Mayor James Naugle and conservative right-wing, so called, Christians who preyed on the LGBT-community. In the movie “Speechless: Silencing the Christians (www.silencingchristians.com timer: 20:40) the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church portrayed Mayor Naugle as a hero in what they called “a culture war.” It was a war based on hate and argued why they justify the discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Today, I mention this significant moment from yesterday, because as we speak, George Moraitis, a former deacon at this hate-filled church is campaigning to be elected to Florida State House District 91, currently polluted by Ellyn Bogdanoff. According to Moraitis’ campaign website, he serves on the board of directors for Westminster Academy, Coral Ridge’s ground zero where children are brainwashed and indoctrinated into a hate-filled and intolerant culture. Earlier this year, LaBamba III, the popular Monday night Mexican fiesta destination had permitted anti-equality candidate Moraitis to

that discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is plain wrong. Barbra is known to many of us in the LGBTcommunity and extremely accessible. Over the past year, Barbra has become a close and treasured friend. She shares a passion for running directly into battle and fighting for social justice. Whenever an LGBT-issue appeared in the headlines, Barbra calls me
at late hours of the night to vent her disgust with the lack of equality for LGBT-people. Florida State House District basically runs along the beach to US1 from Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton. When it comes to the advancement of equality for LGBT-people, Florida continues to rank low, especially when you consider the ultra-conservative nature of our state legislature. Each election, I’m just horrified. While we have many years to go until we gain more ground in Tallahassee, this year we are presented with real opportunity to block legislation that would rob women of their right to choose, dismantle public education and health departments which provide a critical role in our communities throughout the state. The first opportunity, is to gain control of Florida’s Executive Branch and elect Alex Sink as Governor, Loranne Ausley as CFO, Dan Gelber as Attorney General and Scott Maddox as Commissioner of Agriculture. All four individuals make up the Cabinet.Their opponents have never been friends of the LGBT-community and as in the case of outgoing Senate President Jeff Atwater, have allowed extremists to silence pro-equality legislators from advocating on behalf of our community. This past spring I had the chance to sit in the Senate Gallery as several Democratic Senators,

All you need to do is hire a political consultant to sell your position to voters on the other side of town. The result: well-funded special interests on both sides of the development debate gain influence over a process that is governed by 30-second sound-bites. In such a process, the citizens most affected by local plan changes will be out-shouted in countywide media campaigns. And forget trying to gather meaning from a long list of 75 word ballot measures related to comprehensive plan changes! In 2006, the small Florida town of St. Pete Beach adopted a local version of Amendment 4. Since then, the town has seen higher property taxes, fewer jobs and endless litigation. When the voters of St. Pete Beach tried to improve their town’s failing economy at the ballot box, some of the same special interest lawyers who wrote Amendment 4 took the taxpayers to court. Now, non-
stop lawsuits in St. Pete Beach have paralyzed the town’s economy and cost local taxpayers nearly $1 million. That’s one of the top reasons that every major Editorial Board to weigh into the debate has opposed Amendment 4. As the Miami Herald wrote earlier this month, under Amendment 4 “plans could stagnate and stop reflecting a community’s evolving profile.” The strides we’ve made over the past thirty years would never be possible under the direct democracy advocated by Amendment 4. Our community has grown and we now have a voice under our representative democracy. Amendment 4 would silence our voice in our own communities. While Amendment 4 might be a “stimulus package” for the special interest lawyers who wrote it, top economists, Florida’s Editorial Boards, both candidates for Governor, and an historic coalition of business, labor and civic groups all agree: Amendment 4 would raise our taxes and be a job-killer for Floridians. SFGN Editorial

SFGN is Your Voice for Everyone’s Ideas Norm Kent, Publisher
A
newspaper represents the diverse thoughts of an entire community, not just the particular thoughts of its publisher. That we publish a breadth of contrasting opinion does not mean we support the ideas of each writer. It means that everyone has a right to write us with their own views. It means that we come together as a news journal not to censor the rights of any but to secure the rights of all. A newspaper has an obligation to be the voice of many, not the bullhorn of one. A real newspaper allows you to read things you approve of and get pissed off about the things you don’t. A real newspaper not only reports our achievements and accolades but exposes our warts and wounds. A real newspaper is educative and entertaining, with illuminating profiles and legitimate exposes. In the past week, we were criticized by covering the ‘GetEQUAL’ protest in Coral Gables against President Obama. “Why give them any attention,” one writer asked? How about because it is as newsworthy to report on a rally protesting the President’s LGBT policies as it is to feature a human rights dinner hosting one of his advisors as a guest speaker? Angry about the protest? Want to call GetEQUAL GetSTUPID? You are entitled to. Tell us- online immediately if you want. We may in fact find room to print your letter in our paper, but you can find instant gratification as hundreds have by posting a comment immediately under the story on our website.. We are interactive. We upload new content daily at www.southfloridagaynews. com. You can also register and receive daily email blasts from us there as well. When you ask how we can publish the rabid remarks of tea party republican or homophobic religious leaders, we answer that it is as important to hear the voices of those who you agree with as those who disagree with you. Surround yourself with yes men only and you get no truths. You get sycophantiasis. If our community is to represent
you, we must be as diverse as the colors in the rainbow, allowing the breadth of our community to find breath in your paper. We are not here to anoint anyone individually, but to treat everyone equally. We are not here to be the voice of the Dolphin Democrats alone, and we will not shut out the voice of Log Cabin Republicans either. Everyone gets to be heard, but on this editorial page, we express our opinions. But we won’t endorse a Rick Scott for governor when an Alex Sink is a candidate. She deserves your vote. He is a Neanderthal that does not even deserve to be a candidate. His company has been investigated by the Attorney General for consumer fraud longer than he has even lived in the state of Florida. Governor? Please! Our newspaper does have a conscience, and it will not let us support Governor Crist in the U.S. Senate race, even though as the
circumvent us the way Charley Crist steadfastly has. Similarly, our CEO has a few choice words about the GOP in his op-ed today. So while we admire Chip LaMarca’s credible campaign for County Commission, we stand by Ken Keechl as a distinguished mayor who represents our community and this county well. SFGN recognizes that it is your credible LGBT newspaper of record for the South Florida community and we have an obligation and duty to you. The size of our paper, the quality of our content, and the breadth of our advertising speaks for itself. If anything, we owe you an apology, because we can’t fit everything we want into the paper every week that we want to. As we go to press on this, our Election Day issue, stories are being unfortunately bumped. Very frustrating, Kendrick Meek Alex Sink because though we publish more pages and articles election draws near, Kendrick Meek seems than any other LGBT paper in the Southeastern United States. The times, they have changed. With the professional success, political activism, and economic clout we have demonstrated, no one is going to tread on our rights anymore. Be proud. You made it happen. As our paper expands, more and more people are picking up each edition. We know many locations are running out of copies each week. If you need a news rack, or papers, call us. Letters, We Got Letters Comment on: ‘No Pride on the Drive’ (10/6) DEAR EDITOR: As residents and owners of Gallery XO on Wilton Drive we are still shaking our heads over the Belle isle homeowners associations requirement that we remove our rainbow flags from the front of our gallery and home. When we decided to open our gallery on Wilton Drive, we knew we would probably receive some resistance for the type of artwork we had to offer, however we never expected to receive that resistance from our own homeowners association. While we strive to live by the rules of the association, we have found no mention of flags in the 148 pages of documents provided to us.We also find it interesting that the president of Belle lsle mentions in his letter to the editor of the SFGN(8/13/2010) that “no flags except American flags are allowed” and then goes on to say the community “encourages residents to participate with community spirit.” While time is not mentioned in any documents provided to us, it seems there is no clear explanation of why the rainbow flags are not allowed. The president goes on to say that they don’t allow rainbow flags because it Comment on: ‘Light the Lights!’ (10/13) DEAR EDITOR: Floridians are fortunate to have available a wide and varied selection of excellent entertainment venues from which to choose that do not include cruelty, injury and death to animals. I urge you not to include greyhound racing in future entertainment recommendations. Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane. At Florida’s dog tracks, thousands of greyhounds live lives of nearly endless confinement in small cages barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around in.While racing, greyhounds suffer and die from broken limbs, broken necks, paralysis and cardiac arrest. Racing greyhounds are short-term investments, valued only as long as they generate a profit.Their post-racing fate falls to adoption group volunteers who rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt as many greyhounds as they can. Commercial dog racing has experienced catastrophic decline and now represents less than 1% of all wagers placed in the U.S. each year. Please keep in mind that polling has shown the majority of Florida voters wish to see dog racing end. Dogs play an important role in our lives and deserve to be protected from industries that do them harm. I have personally adopted gentle, beloved greyhounds since 1997, and I am a board member of GREY2K USA, a national non-profit organization that works to end the cruelty of dog racing. may encourage less inclusive flags to be displayed. Not only does this bring to question our right to freedom of speech provided in our constitution, its makes us wonder, what are they thinking. While we are still perplexed by the demand to remove our rainbow flags, the past two weeks have been amazing and the response from the GLBT community, as well as many straight friends has been exciting and energizing. Everyone that has stopped in and shown their support has been overwhelming in favor of the flags and has renewed for us the belief that our community really does care when it comes to their rights and the ability to show their pride. The majority of the people who called and stopped by generally had one response….REALLY?!?! Who would have thought that in 2010, in one of the gayest cities on the planet, the rainbow flag would be unwelcome. While our rainbow flags will not be on display to avoid anymore problems for our landlord, we will always remember the amazing support we received from everyone in our community and will continue to fight for our right to show our pride!

Tommy LaFashia Maciel Cantelmo, Gallery XO Comment on: ‘Tea Party Republican Speaks Out Against Obama’ (10/13) DEAR EDITOR: Although my politics differ greatly from those of Peter Ryskewecz, I am accepting enough to respect his right to his opinion. In the last paragraph of his attack on President Obama and The Democratic Party in general however, I believe the writer makes a grossly short-sighted statement as to his reasoning for his statement: “In 2008, over one out of three Gay voters voted for John McCain in an otherwise dismal year for the GOP.They must have been on to something”. What Mr. Ryskewecz fails to acknowledge is that many voters, gay or straight, just could not or would not vote for an African American man to be our President! I can quote from personal experience, that several acquaintances, both gay and straight, made statements to the effect that they just would not accept a black President. To paraphrase, statements such as,“I am voting ‘white’ “ and “I don’t want ‘black’ in The White House” were commonly given as these people’s mind sets; obviously, what many of these people were “on to,” as Mr. Ryskewecz states, is Racism. Regrettably, discrimination exists within The Gay Community, just as well as it does within the general population. While I certainly acknowledge the existence a community of Gay Republicans, it is my opinion that to use the statistics of Gay Voters in the 2008 Presidential election as a barometer of the general political leanings of The Gay Community, or to imply a shifting trend in such, is indeed a short-sighted attempt to skew these in favor of the writer’s newfound personal position. lorida Attorney General Bill McCollum announced Friday (October 22) that he will not challenge a September 22 state appellate court ruling that overturned Florida’s ban on adoption by gay men or lesbians. This means the 33-year-old ban has ended. Frank Martin Gill, who filed the lawsuit in an effort to secure the adoption of the two boys he and his partner have raised for almost six years, said in a statement from the ACLU of Florida, which argued the case, “We are relieved that this process has finally come to an end, and that we can focus on being a family.” The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) had said October 12 that neither the agency nor Governor Charlie Crist (I) would appeal the appellate ruling. McCollum, however, retained the attorney general’s independent right to appeal up to October 22. The brief statement issued by McCol-
lum’s office Friday said that the constitutionality of the adoption ban “is a divisive matter of great public interest” but that, after reviewing the merits of an independent appeal to the state Supreme Court and considering the decision of its client, DCF, not to appeal, “it is clear that this is not the right case to take to the Supreme Court for its determination.” McCollum said that, although he would not appeal, he still felt “the final determination should rest with the Florida Supreme Court, not a lower appellate court.” McCollum has been criticized by LGBT rights groups and others for paying clinical psychologist Dr. George A. Rekers more than $120,000 to testify in the trial court that children do best with a mother and a father. The appeals court upheld the lower court’s finding that Rekers’ opinions “were not valid from a scientific point of view.” (Rekers was later found traveling with a gay male escort who claimed Rekers himself was gay, although Rekers has denied it.) The safety and effectiveness of ISENTRESS in children has not been studied. It is important that you remain under your doctor’s care. ISENTRESS will NOT cure HIV infection or reduce your chance of passing HIV to others through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood.
IMPORTANT RISK INFORMATION A condition called Immune Reconstitution Syndrome can happen in some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS) when anti-HIV treatment is started. Signs and symptoms of inflammation from opportunistic infections may occur as the medicines work to treat the HIV infection and strengthen the immune system. Call your doctor right away if you notice any signs or symptoms of an infection after starting ISENTRESS. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while taking ISENTRESS. This is because on rare occasions muscle problems can be serious and can lead to kidney damage. When ISENTRESS has been given with other anti-HIV drugs, side effects included nausea, headache, tiredness, weakness, trouble sleeping, stomach pain, dizziness, depression, and suicidal thoughts and actions. Rash occurred more often in patients taking ISENTRESS and darunavir together than with either drug separately, but was generally mild.

Read the patient information that comes with ISENTRESS1 before you start taking it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet is a summary of the information for patients. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you additional information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or your treatment. What is ISENTRESS? • ISENTRESS is an anti-HIV (antiretroviral) medicine used for the treatment of HIV. The term HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). ISENTRESS is used along with other anti-HIV medicines. ISENTRESS will NOT cure HIV infection. • People taking ISENTRESS may still develop infections, including opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. • Stay under the care of your doctor during treatment with ISENTRESS. • The safety and effectiveness of ISENTRESS in children has not been studied. ISENTRESS must be used with other anti-HIV medicines. How does ISENTRESS work? • ISENTRESS blocks an enzyme which the virus (HIV) needs in order to make more virus. The enzyme that ISENTRESS blocks is called HIV integrase. • When used with other anti-HIV medicines, ISENTRESS may do two things: 1. Reduce the amount of HIV in your blood. This is called your “viral load”. 2. Increase the number of white blood cells called CD4 (T) cells. • ISENTRESS may not have these effects in all patients. Does ISENTRESS lower the chance of passing HIV to other people? No. ISENTRESS does not reduce the chance of passing HIV to others through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. • Continue to practice safer sex. • Use latex or polyurethane condoms or other barrier methods to lower the chance of sexual contact with any body fluids. This includes semen from a man, vaginal secretions from a woman, or blood. • Never re-use or share needles. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about safer sex or how to prevent passing HIV to other people. What should I tell my doctor before and during treatment with ISENTRESS? Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Include any of the following that applies to you: • You have any allergies. • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. - ISENTRESS is not recommended for use during pregnancy. ISENTRESS has not been studied in pregnant women. If you take ISENTRESS while you are pregnant, talk to your doctor about how you can be included in the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry. • You are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. - It is recommended that HIV-infected women should not breast-feed their infants. This is because their babies could be infected with HIV through their breast milk. - Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take. Include the following: • prescription medicines, including rifampin (a medicine used to treat some infections such as tuberculosis) • non-prescription medicines • vitamins • herbal supplements Know the medicines you take. • Keep a list of your medicines. Show the list to your doctor and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. How should I take ISENTRESS? Take ISENTRESS exactly as your doctor has prescribed. The recommended dose is as follows: • Take only one 400-mg tablet at a time. • Take it twice a day. • Take it by mouth. • Take it with or without food. Do not change your dose or stop taking ISENTRESS or your other anti-HIV medicines without first talking with your doctor.

ave you ever noticed that people whose lives are rife with moral contradictions are generally the first to pass judgment on others? When these individuals are in charge of passing laws instead of just passing judgments, you can’t shrug it off. We have to be angry and alert. Why should our freedoms be regulated by the conscience of others? Apparently, politicians and preachers think they have taken over God’s mantle. Alas, it’s a cast of scoundrels hurling platitudes and holy sound bites from their sloughs of hypocrisy. They like to call themselves The Moral Majority. They are neither. From their self appointed, high and mighty positions, one after the other, Republican politicians will extol the virtues of religion, heterosexual marriage, family values, proudly waiving their opposition to abortion, gay rights, gay marriage, immigration, evolution and any religious belief that is not Christian based. Ironically, the most virulent anti gay lawmakers, and loudest do-gooders, are the ones often caught in, not-so-family-oriented, sexual scandals. They tend to be right wing Republicans, by a long shot. Democrats are certainly no saints. Many of them have committed adultery and had sexual liaisons , (JFK, LBJ, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Gary Hart, Eliot Spitzer, even “our own” gay governor Jim McGreevey), but at least they do not constantly tell straights or gays how to behave in the privacy and sanctity of the bedroom, dictate how we should go about our private lives or which congregation to worship at. Readers might argue that the following list is partial to the Democrats and unfair to the Republicans.; that it is put together with a bias. The point here is to highlight the sanctimonious claptrap we constantly hear from the Republican morality pulpit, through “fair and balanced” media outlets, churches, right

Survey Says One Out of Six Students Are Bullied By A. Sebastian Fortino
A
survey of more than 500,000 students from more than 1,500 schools discovered that one out of six students suffers from bullying. This is the largest survey of its kind, wherein students filled out anonymous questionnaires over the last two years to gage the status of bullying between grades three through 12. The study was released on Wednesday, October 20, which coincided with Spirit Day, a vigil honoring LGBT youth who recently took their own lives. The study was released by Clemson University, located in South Carolina. A whopping 17 percent of students reported being bullied at least two to three times per month. Forty percent of girls and

A vote cast or a donation made to Sharon Angle is likely to become sociopolitical poison between some business leaders and their gay clientele. Interestingly, another fitness chain has been making donations on a similar scale for many years. The owner of Curves, those fitness centers exclusively designed for women, Gary Heavin, has made multimillion dollar donations to Operation Save America – a radical anti-abortion group known for its loose affiliations with bombers and snipers who claim to be “protecting life” when attacking health care facilities. The leader of these radicals is almost as driven by his homophobia as he is by the pro-life cause. Operation Save America founder, Flip Benham routinely publishes articles on their website that would offend most people who are not right-of-center in their politics. He could also be mistaken for Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church due to the outlandish signs he carries with him. “The radical homosexual agenda,” Benham says, “has never been about tolerance and acceptance. It is a blatant attempt to call that which is evil, good and force everyone to chant the same mantra.”

Lambda Chorale Sings for a Cure
T
he Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School Lightning Singers will combine with The South Florida Lambda Chorale to present Sing for the Cure, A Proclamation of Hope, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit Susan B. Komen for the Cure South Florida. The concert will take place on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School auditorium, 1410 County Line Road, Miami. Sing for the Cure, A Proclamation of Hope is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Commissioned by the Dallas Women’s Chorus and the Turtle Creek Chorale, the work’s text is by Pamela Martin but each movement was composed by a different composer. The work follows a woman’s journey with the disease but also provides hope and inspiration. “This is the first time a high school chorus has presented Sing for the Cure, A Proclamation
of Hope,” said Gary Keating who teaches the chorus magnet strand at MKHS and is artistic director for Lambda Chorale. “I wanted my students and Lambda singers to have a different experience than performing a standard major work such as the Vivaldi Gloria or a mass. This is a powerful text and wonderful music dealing with one of the major issues of our time,” Keating added. Regarding his high school students, Keating is proud of their maturity level regarding topics discussed in the music. “It has certainly been a growing and learning experience for these students.” Narrating the work is special guest Naomi Parker. Members of both choruses sang for the Susan B. Komen for the Cure Walk, Saturday, Oct. 16, at Bayfront Park, Miami, for an estimated crowd of 20,000. Students have begun wearing pink ribbons to promote education and awareness to spread the message it isn’t too early to learn about breast cancer and that it affects men as well as women.
Tickets for this one-night concert are $15 at the GLCC South Florida at 2040 No Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors.

Spirit Day Vigils
Economic ‘Recovery’ to be Short Lived
continued from page 4
If Financials Fail to Gain, So Will the Economy By Joey Amato
O
ver the past decade of being interested in the stock market and economy, I have heard many experts talk about how the financials are the catalyst for growth and/or disaster. Think back to Lehman Brothers. When news hit that the once renowned institution was shutting its doors, the entire financial world felt the quake. This was the beginning of the end of life as we once knew it. Esteemed analyst Dick Bove, recently stated the banks could lose approximately $80 Billion as a result of the mortgage crisis that has not yet reached its peak. “Banks could face losses of over $80 billion from the foreclosure mess,” Bove states. “Not so much from the moratorium on home seizures but from the flood of homeowner and investor lawsuits likely to follow.” According to Bove, the legal fallout could result in about 10 times the amount that banks
could lose from the foreclosure halt itself. “Huge amounts of monies have been lost and there are very angry participants at every level of the system seeking to recover the funds that they have lost,” Bove wrote. Last week, as much of the markets realized gains, financial stock suffered greatly, sometime declining five percent in one session. To add more salt to the wounds, S&P Equity downgraded Bank of America to “hold” from “strong buy,” saying the bank is not as prepared for the fallout from the foreclosure crisis as JPMorgan Chase. S&P also cut its price target for Bank of America to $14 from $17. Shares of the institution hit a 52-week low. Bank of America, the country’s largest mortgage servicer, could be forced to repurchase as much as $74 billion in mortgages, according to one estimate by Branch Hill Capital. Fears have surfaced about the profitability of U.S. financial institutions. Some feel profit will be wiped out as a result of repurchasing billions in home loans held by in-
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke
vestors in mortgage-backed securities. “The housing crisis is not over,” Bove said. “It has been extended. If the extension is too long everyone will be harmed. The entity harmed the most will be the homeowner making payments on his/her mortgage.” Bove states homeowners will be hurt by declining in property values when homes subject to the moratorium come back into the market. The overabundance of supply will cripple prices and send the alreadybeleaguered market into another tailspin, Bove said. As banking stocks tumbled, the University of Michigan’s preliminary consumer sentiment index was reported as 67.9 in October, less than the 68.5 reading economists were expecting. The reading was 68.2 in September and the weakest since July. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke spoke at a conference sponsored by the Boston Federal Reserve Bank. “There would appear—all else being equal—to be a case for further action,” Bernanke states. “A prolonged period of high unemployment could pose a risk to the recovery’s sustainability and the low level of inflation means the risk of a dangerous downward slide in prices was greater than desirable.” In sum, if the banks feel the pain, so will the rest of the economy. Hunker down America; we’re not out of the woods yet!
SFGN, who was shocked with the success of the event. “I expected to maybe have 20 people join in the vigil, I never thought we’d get that many.” In Wilton Manors more than 100 people attended the vigil held in front of Georgie’s Alibi. Mayor Gary Resnick spoke, as well as several other Broward County representatives, political candidates, and LGBT organizers. “For me the vigil was a powerful way to send a message that we are united as a community and to show love for all LGBT people,” said Scott Hall, co-founder of Gay American Heroes. Poignantly, he spoke of the closet as a cage of shame and fear. He and others reminded those before them that we have to unite politically. It is time for grass roots action now – more than ever as we fight to serve in the military openly, and the rght to marry our loved ones. “For me the vigil was a powerful way to send a message that we are united as a community and to show love for all LGBT people.”
– Scott Hall “Until we are given the same rights, freedoms, and protections as every other American we will be united in this fight for respect and dignity,” added Hall. Hall is invested in his mission against gay suicides and violence against our gay peers. During the time of his interview he told SFGN that after Wednesday’s event he had learned of two more gay deaths as a result of suicide and victimization. One has to wonder, how many more murders and suicides are not reported that are related to these issues out of family shame or ignorance.

SFGN BRIEFS Slater Pleads Guilty – Gets Burglarized Associated Press - The JetBlue flight attendant whose job-quitting meltdown landed him in court avoided jail time in a plea deal Tuesday that requires him to undergo counseling and treatment for a least a year. Steven Slater spoke politely and calmly as he entered a guilty plea to a charge of second-degree attempted criminal mischief, a felony, and a lesser charge of fourth-degree attempted criminal mischief. He admitted he pulled the emergency chute Aug. 9 on a JetBlue flight from Pittsburgh after it landed at Kennedy International Airport. Slater went on the public-address system, swore at a passenger who he claimed treated him rudely, grabbed a beer and slid onto the tarmac. “At the end of the day, I’m a grown-up and I must take responsibility for my actions,” Steven Slater said outside court. In related news, Jonathan Rochelle, 39, the brother of Slater’s partner, Kenneth Rochelle, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of seconddegree burglary. He is accused of stealing a laptop computer, printer, and microwave
oven October 14 from the home Slater shares with Kenneth Rochelle in Queens. Police say Jonathan Rochelle, who lives nearby, confessed to the theft, said he had sold the goods, and blamed his addiction to painkillers for the crime, the station reports. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

White House Rejects Gay Nominee The White House has rejected the nomination of Daniel Alter, a New Yorker would have become the first openly gay man to sit on the federal bench, because of comments he made about the Pledge of Allegiance and Christmas that were considered anti-Christian. According to the Washington Blade, the White House departed from tradition by failing to follow the guidance of the senator from the state where the vacancy existed. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York had recom-
mended Alter to serve as a judge for the U.S. District Court of New York in February. “But informed sources told the Washington Blade that the White House rejected Alter’s nomination because of remarks he reportedly made regarding a case challenging inclusion of the phrase ‘under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance,” reports the Blade. “In addition, the White House reportedly objected to remarks that Alter made suggesting that merchants not wish shoppers ‘Merry Christmas’ during the holidays.” The comments are attributed to Alter in articles in Cybercast News Service and The New Republic.

The jury was told the beating had a “sexual element.” “You were in a position of authority and trust over him which you exploited ruthlessly,” said Justice Bean, the judge in the case, according to the BBC. “I think the most likely explanation is that you could not care less whether you killed him or not.”
Shanghai Gay Bar to Close? A gay bar located in an air raid shelter in Shanghai may be closed because of noisy customers whose loud outdoor sex has drawn complaints. According to Shanghai Daily, the Shanghai Studio bar will be closed soon by its landlord, the Changning District Air Defense Bureau, if complaints persist from nearby residents. The basement-level air raid shelter was rented to the bar three years ago, and a local security guard alleged that an “advanced infrared surveillance system” had captured two men
having sex outside the bar in a dark corner. A spokesman for the landlord said that Shanghai Studio has been sent a final warning, although he added that no evidence of illegal business was ever found during surprise spot checks of the establishment. He said that rent money from the bar was used to maintain other air raid shelters in the town. Shanghai Studio said that sex was banned at the bar, and that more security guards would be sent to patrol outside the bar at night.

showing that advertisers are more willing to pay to target gay men specifically. However, according to the report, the text of the ads for some services was completely neutral, but the ads were still targeted exclusively to gay men. Additionally, half of the 66 ads targeted exclusively to gay men did not mention the word “gay” in any of the copy. “The danger with such ads, unlike the gay bar ad where the target demographic is blatantly obvious, is that the user reading the ad text would have no idea that by clicking it he would reveal to the advertiser both his sexual-preference and a unique identifier (cookie, IP address, or email address if he signs up on the advertiser’s site),” the researchers wrote.

13 Races to Worry About continued from page 9
both the state House and Senate are in peril November 2, says Rep. Jim Splaine, the openly gay state legislator who authored the marriage bill in the House. Only two of seven Republicans who supported marriage equality were defeated in the primary, but the margins of victory on the marriage equality bill in 2009 were razor thin, and Splaine himself is retiring at the end of this year. If Republicans do take back the majority in the legislature, a repeal bill has a strong chance of succeeding. Polls indicate the results Tuesday are simply unpredictable. New Hampshire retains Democratic governor Now, imagine the New Hampshire legislature passes a bill to repeal its one-year-old marriage equality law and sends it to the governor’s desk. If incumbent Democrat John Lynch is there, it’s very likely that he’ll veto it. But if Republican challenger John Stephen is there, he’s promised to sign it. Polls give Lynch a good chance of hanging onto the job. California elects Democratic governor Republican Meg Whitman unabashedly opposes same-sex marriage and voted for Proposition 8. (She favors civil unions.) Democrat Jerry Brown, the state’s attorney general, supports same-sex marriage and has refused to defend California’s samesex marriage ban – Proposition 8—in the landmark lawsuit now before the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Whitman has criticized Brown for his position, and some speculate she could –if elected—intervene to enhance the appeal against federal Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling that the measure is unconstitutional. The team challenging Proposition 8 says it is not concerned about that and, truth be told, the 9th Circuit will have heard the appeal long before the next governor takes office. But the position of the next governor could have some influence if and when the full 9th Circuit and/or the U.S. Supreme Court hear the case. And, legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky notes that, if the 9th Circuit should dismiss the appeal for lack of standing by the current appellants, Whitman “could make a motion in federal court to have the judgment set aside.” Polls call this a toss-up with Brown having a slight edge. California elects Democratic attorney general Republican Steve Cooley has also criticized Attorney General Brown for refusing to

As of October 4, reports the Register, with 78 percent in 2004 and 68 percent in the contests are a toss-up, with 44 percent 2008. So, if Frank slips much below 68 perof 550 likely voters saying they’ll vote for cent this year, political pundits and potential retention, 40 percent against, and 16 percent challengers will almost certainly smell blood saying they’ll retain “some.” The margin of er- in the water, whether it’s there or not. ror is plus or minus 4.2 percent. Paul LePage would not only veto a marriage equality bill if one came to his desk, but “supports gutting the Maine Human Rights Act,” which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Democratic candidate Libby Mitchell is the polar opposite: According to Maine Public Radio, she would “restore the gay marriage law that was repealed by Maine voters last fall.” Independent candidate Eliot Cutler supports same-sex marriage, too. But guess who’s at the top of the latest poll? LePage. According to the Portland Press Herald on October 22, a poll of 600 registered voters has LePage at 32 percent, Mitchell at 20 percent, and Cutler at 19. Twenty-one percent are undecided and the rest are promised to minor party candidates. New York elects Democratic governor Tea Party Republican Carl Paladino has turned this race into an interesting one. He is opposed to equal marriage rights for gay couples, doesn’t want his children to think being gay is “an equally valid and successful option” to being straight, and called gay pride parades “disgusting.” But the New York Daily News reported last week that he used to collect rent from gay clubs in Buffalo, his campaign says that’s proof he doesn’t discriminate against gays, and he apologized “for any comment that may have offended the gay and lesbian community or their family members.” As of October 22, Democrat Andrew Cuomo has a 23-point lead over Paladino. And Cuomo would make a much different governor for LGBT New Yorkers. To put it in his own words, “I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York.” Polls indicate an easy Democratic win. Minnesota elects Democratic governor LGBT interest in this race really began to escalate after the Target and Best Buy discount chains donated big money to a group called MN Forward, and MN Forward ran ads in support of Republican candidate Ted Emmer. Emmer’s website makes clear he opposes equal rights to marriage for gay couples and he led an effort in the state legislature to adopt a constitutional amendment to ban them. By contrast, Democrat Mark Dayton supports equal rights for LGBT people and his website includes a prominent and thorough discussion of that support. Polls indicate Dayton will be the likely winner.
