Equality Forum Head Calls for Congressional Action By Cliff Dunn
B
randon Bitner was buried on Wednesday, November 10. The 14-year-old high school freshman from rural Middleburg, Pennsylvania committed suicide by running into the path of a tractor trailer. He left a note that he wanted to draw attention to bullying. Brandon was a talented musician, who aspired to be a classical violinist. According to the note, he was tired of being called “faggot” and “sissy.” According to his mother, Tammy Simpson, “He was the most wonderful child anyone could ask for.”

“We need to stop the carnage of gay teen suicides,” said Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum, a national LGBT civil rights organization headquartered in Philadelphia. In October 2010, Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University freshman who committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, brought national attention to the epidemic of gay teen suicides that resulted from bullying. It is estimated that about 500 gay teens each year or 40 gay teens per month take their lives as a result of homophobia. “In most public, middle and high schools, homophobic taunts are hurled without any disciplinary action,” stated Lazin. “Sticks and stones will break your bones, but names can really harm you.” Currently, there are two bills in Congress, the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student Non-Discrimination Act. “Preventing bullying is a non-partisan issue,” said Lazin. “Congress needs to unanimously pass the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student Non-Discrimination Act to make resoundingly clear that our nation demands safe schools for all children.” Equality Forum produced the documentary film “JIM IN BOLD” (www.jiminbold.com) about the impact of homophobia on gay youth. The film centers on James Wheeler, a 19-year-old talented youth who committed suicide. Jim was surrounded in his high school’s locker room and urinated on. There was no disciplinary action. The award-winning film has been screened at over 50 film festivals and at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Association.

Hhs Awards Up to $22.4 Million for Suicide Prevention By Dana Rudolph Keen News Service
T
he U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this month announced a grant of up to $22.4 million for suicide prevention, some of which will be used to address the needs of LGBT youth. The grant came two weeks after leaders of the U.S. House’s LGBT Equality Caucus called on HHS to do more to stop suicides
among LGBT youth, saying such suicides were “a serious public health problem which cannot wait.” But the grant was in progress long before the letter. The money—from HHS’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)—will re-fund the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), which helps organizations and individuals develop suicide prevention programs and policies. continued on page 25

n response to Florida’s growing crisis with its federally funded, state run AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is spearheading a community town hall meeting Wednesday, November 17th at 6pm in Wilton Manors, FL. The town hall, dubbed—Operation: Mobilize Sunshine!—seeks to mobilize concerned Floridians to speak out and act up to urge action to solve Florida’s growing crisis in its ADAP, the federal/state program that pays for life-saving AIDS drugs for low-income Americans. Please join AHF and its community partners in this effort and have your voices heard on Wednesday, November 17th 2010 at 6:00pm at Hagen Park’s community facility. (2020 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors, FL 33305). Beginning of next month, 350 current Florida recipients of ADAP benefits will be removed from the rolls of Florida’s ADAP and as a result they will no longer be able to obtain their lifesaving medication through this federally funded program. The Florida AIDS Drug Assistance Program, commonly referred to as ADAP, is $16 million short of being able to serve all of its current clients until April 1, 2011, according to the Florida Department of Health. Florida also has the largest ADAP patient waiting list in the country (2,374 and counting, as of November 5th), as well as the highest rate of new HIV infections in the nation. Enrollment into Florida’s ADAP has reached unsustainable levels with presently allocated funds, and thus has impelled the Health Department to tighten income eligibility requirements. 2,000 more patients may also be at risk for being dropped by the state if the Health Department cannot procure emergency dollars to support the program. Nationwide, ADAPs serve over 165,000 people, accounting for one third of people on AIDS treatment in the U.S. Unfortunately, the need for these programs expands ev-
ery year, as more and more people become infected and diagnosed with HIV/AIDS; each year thousands of newly diagnosed HIV patients turn to ADAPs because they cannot afford their medicines. Although some money is being funneled Florida’s way, ADAP will still require millions of dollars more to accommodate its patient load. With a bleak job market still lingering, HIV patients who have lost their employment are still relying on this government program to receive the life saving medication they need. Thousands are now teetering on the brink of therapy interruption. This cannot happen. The ‘Operation: Mobilize Florida’!’ town hall is open to the public and ALL CONCERNED FLORIDIANS ARE URGED TO ATTEND. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be provided. If you currently use ADAP to get your lifesaving medications, this event will offer answers to your concerns, tools to navigate access to medication and care, and a chance to personally urge your elected representatives to act now. Speakers invited include AHF representatives Mike Kahane, Southern Bureau Chief; Lydia S. Gresham, Director of Operations, Southern Bureau; Jason King,Pharmacy Specialist/Patient Advocate and James Vellequette, AHF Associate Director Public Health, Southern Bureau. Other community leaders will also be invited. For further info, contact Jason King, AHF Pharmacy Specialist/Patient Advocate (954) 610-3064

Arrest Made in Miss Vicky’s Exploitation Case
Yale Johns Hopkins Wills Eye Board Certified Physician and Surgeon
News Story Leads to Tip to Sheriff ’s Office (From our media partner Sun Sentinel) POMPANO BEACH — A man sought since June on suspicion of financially exploiting an elderly woman was arrested Sunday after he attended church services. Mark McKinley, 46, was taken into custody in Pompano Beach. Investigators say he was driving without a valid license. McKinley was a friend of Vicky Keller, 85, for more than two decades. She said he had lived with her, and worshipped at the Church of Our Savior in Boynton Beach, where she is choir director. They sang in the same karaoke club. The Broward Sheriff’s Office alleges that McKinley stole Keller’s credit cards and bought five flat-screen TVs at Costco without her permission. The arrest report also says jewelry and $3,000 in cash were stolen. The Sheriff’s Office was tipped to McKinley’s whereabouts by someone who saw a news report about Keller. “Somebody called it in,” Broward Sheriff’s Detective German Bickbau said. “They read it in the Sun Sentinel. The guy was
staying in somebody else’s apartment, in Oakland Park.” Late Monday afternoon, McKinley was still being held in the Broward Main Jail on $12,100 bail. He was charged with exploitation of an elderly person, grand theft, operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and fraudulent use of credit cards, according to arrest documents. “I’m delighted,” Keller said after learning about the arrest of her former friend. She said she had relied upon him for help with transportation and her financial paperwork. Keller, the director emeritus of Pride South Florida and a member of other gay rights groups, is a divorced mother of three, including a son who died from AIDS. She says she is most proud of helping AIDS patients get funding for expensive drug treatments. On Tuesday, the Rising Action Theatre, where Keller is an associate producer, will host a benefit cabaret show for her to help her pay medical bills and recover financial losses.

Research
By Jarrett Terrill
T
he Archives of Sexual Behavior is a peer-reviewed academic journal in sexology. It is the official publication of the International Academy of Sex Research. It publishes empirical research (both quantitative and qualitative), clinical case reports, book reviews and letters to the editor. Most recently, the Archives published the findings of the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), the longest-running study ever conducted on American lesbian families. The results of the study were astounding. The NLLFS studied more than 70 teenagers who were growing up in lesbian twomother households. There were zero instances of physical or sexual abuse found in any of the homes. According to the Huffington Post, this contrasts with 26 percent of American adolescents who report parent or caregiver physical abuse and 8.3 percent
who report sexual abuse. The study, which ran over the course of twenty-four years, also found that homophobia had a negative impact on the well-being of children who experienced it. Attending schools with LGBT curricula and their mothers’ participation in the lesbian community were found to protect children against the negative influences of homophobia. Just a few days later, Alvin McEwen, an author and gay rights activist in South Carolina brought attention to the importance of peer-reviewed research on his blog, Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters. His article was about Paul Cameron of the Family Research Institute who had failed to persuade lawyers for California’s Proposition 8 against gay marriage to rely on his theories. Cameron holds that gays and lesbians are more sexually and physically abusive to children than heterosexuals. But as noted above, the International Academy’s re-

cent conclusion of the NLLFS reveals that there is absolutely zero evidence to support Cameron’s claims. Cameron says the court was biased toward scientific research and peer-reviewed academic journals – some things that his religious organization does not benefit from. But McEwen tells us that the Family Research Institute has its own psychology journal, ambiguously titled Psychological Reports, which they print their “research” in. The reason that little of the Family Research Institute’s work got very much play in the Prop 8 trial was because it doesn’t stand
up to questioning on the stand, the way real academic, peer-reviewed, empirical studies do. McEwen says that so called “peers” can review the work that goes into Psychological Reports, but they have no power to make the publication reject said work. “There simply wasn’t any evidence; there weren’t any of those studies,” says David Boies, counsel for the plaintiffs in the Prop 8 trial, “That’s just made up. That’s junk science. It’s easy to [tell their lies and spread fear] on television. But a witness stand is a lonely place to lie. And when you come into court you can’t do that.”
THIS TIME, THERE WON’T BE A THICK GLASS WALL BETWEEN YOU. This time you will truly connect. This time, you will share the water and the wonders of his world. This time you won’t be peering through glass or sitting in the stands. No, this time you will reach out and hold on for the ride of your life as a dolphin whisks you through the water. This time, you two will meet – nose to bottlenose

The General Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s highest administrative body, issued a statement Friday saying it would allow clergy to minister to LGBT church members. A spokesman for the synod told Agence France-Presse that Lutheran ministers will have a choice as to whether they will perform the prayer with gay couples entering a legal partnership. Allowing of a prayer, however, does not constitute the church’s blessing of same-sex relationships, or marriage equality.

Island City Art Walk & Mangum Gallery Opening By A. Sebastian Fortino
I
sland City Art Walk returns for its fifth year, now that cooler evenings make walking a pleasure – not a sweaty stroll. In addition to favorite shops, galleries, and other merchants opening up their doors, a new gallery will celebrate its grand opening this Friday, November 19, in conjunction with the art walk. Gallery owner Greg Mangum decided on Wilton Drive as a location due to the foottraffic and the Bohemian nature of the community. Also, the presence of the other galleries was a pull for him. “I like the other galleries on the drive. It’s a good idea to have similar businesses near you,” he said. Mangum has been in the Fort Lauderdale area for the past three years. Prior to that he was working in his native Virginia, in a decidedly non-artistic position although he studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University. “It was a big move, leaving my job

I love wall art,” Mangum tells SFGN. “Yet the tables, and pottery really interests me, as do lamps. I like knowing that the owner or collector can utilize the design in their everyday life.” For their grand opening on Friday the watercolors of Michael Kemper will be showcased. Mangum hopes to feature eight to 10 artists per year, with the bulk being displayed during season. Moving forward, he also hopes to engage the public with the gallery as much as possible, and host workshops for artists and amateurs alike. hen I said I was moving to Florida last year my friends and family all regarded my decision with, well, derision about my flight scheduled for October 23, 2009. “So you think you’re too good for the cold,” remarked one friend who – among our circle – is known as the perpetual malcontent. “Are you kidding? Florida’s for old people,” said another dear friend with whom I debate everything on a daily basis. Perhaps most touching was my brother’s statement about the impending move south. “Florida isn’t going to appeal to your sense of history,” he said in a moment of erudite clarity that made me pause, until he finished his thoughts. “Yeah, they don’t have any of that historical shit you like.” To which I responded before he passed me the joint, “After a life on the Northeastern Seaboard I don’t care if I ever see another plaque that says ‘George Washington slept here’!” My first few months were spent in Miami. They were a grand, over-stimulated time, in which I ran from gallery, to party, to bar with a growing circle of friends. Although, in retrospect, the hand that guided me through the circus of Miami did so because he wished to hide who he really was. For nearly two months, after he unceremoniously kicked me out of his apartment, I was broke, barely employed, semi-homeless, and thought there was no hope. “You can’t go back to Philadelphia, your friends will have a field day with this,” I thought to myself while walking down Biscayne Boulevard. So, that night I watched Gone With the Wind and decided, like Scarlett, I was not going to let the Yankees lick me! By this I mean the north, not the baseball team nor the Union Army. Against all odds I decided no matter what
happened to me the only way I would return north was in a box. However, that didn’t happen. At the height of my troubles, at the bottom of my barrel, the publisher of this newspaper called me and offered me a job. The next morning I arrived here, and have since had no regrets. Since then I’ve met a wealth of unusual characters. Fort Lauderdale never ceases to amaze me. Only here will someone tell you they are a part-time hooker as casually as if they were inviting you out for a meal. Only here will you see two beautiful, naked boys playing with frogs at two-inthe-morning, in your building’s courtyard, which brings a smile to your face…until you learn they are doing speed! My friends in New York – who thought my move to Philadelphia was insane – scoffed even more at my decision to reside in our dear little gay village. To those that are familiar with Wilton Manors, their response is both charming and vexing. “You really live in that town with the gay strip malls?” Well fie, fie on them, I survived! While I might still not know how to drive, and I am deathly afraid of going underwater, I have found my niche. My writing has become my vocation, my writing garners me compliments, and my association with the paper has led me to many great fun-filled evenings and events. Yet, even by locals I still hear Florida described as being, “hot, dumb and flat.” Yes, it is hot, but I would live on the equator if I could. Sure it’s a little dumb, but I tired of the faux-intellectuals of the northeast. Of course it’s flat, but when that sun is shining and those palm trees are ever so gently blowing in the breeze, and the Florida Pines stand out like giant plumes in the limitless night sky I still take a deep breath and say, “I love you Florida.”

Elections a Setback for Peace
T
he November election was a setback for the peace movement, not only because of the defeat of Sen. Russ Feingold but for deeper reasons. Both parties collaborated in keeping Afghanistan out of the national election debate and media coverage – while during the period June-November alone, 274 American soldiers were killed and 2,911 were wounded on the battlefield. The official American toll under Obama in Afghanistan has reached 732 deaths and 6,480 wounded; monthly projections for taxpayer costs are currently $12.5 billion per month, while the President estimates $113 billion in direct costs for this year at current U.S. troop levels of 100,000. Democratic candidates this year chose not to use Afghanistan-Iraq as an issue perhaps because they have become Obama’s wars. According to the New York Times, the US even plans to orchestrate an invitation to remain in Iraq after the current 2011 deadline, but desperately wanted to keep the controversy out of the election debates. With Republican control of the House, antiwar Democrats will
ever troop escalation Petraeus wanted.] The next test for Obama will be whether his December review of Afghanistan policy results in only another ratification of Afghanistan status quo. Then comes another budget battle, with antiwar forces in Congress at a greater tactical disadvantage than last year. By then Obama’s actual Afghan drawdown numbers will be publicly known, with Republicans, the military and most of the media opposed or skeptical. The 2012 national election predictably will be fought over Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and the Long War favored by the Republicans and the generals, with Obama positioned as favoring gradual troop drawdowns in order to invest in his domestic agenda. The wars will continue in any event, with increasing risks of terrorist attacks on the US, bloody quagmires on the battlefields, and the US propping up unpopular regimes in Kabul, Baghdad, Islamabad and Yemen. The wars are unwinnable and unaffordable, but no one in power dares say it. The peace bloc – activist groups, anti-war Congress members, writers and artists, here and across the NATO – can exercise a massive drag against the warmaking machine through 2012 as long as the wars remain deeply unpopular. But in the absence of political statesmanship, Petraeus need not worry, because the final stage will be anything but graceful. A version of this article appeared at The Nation on November 4, 2010.

Creep of the Week: Tim Hicks
A
ttention all incestuous Iowans. Your dream is coming true. Soon you’ll be able to marry the object of your incestuous affections. Since that’s how incest works: just two people in love, oppressed by blood. It’s like Flowers In the Attic on Broadway, only Broadway is real life. This is all thanks to the Iowa Supreme Court. No, they haven’t legalized incest. But they will. After all, they made it legal for homos to marry each other, so incest is next on the marriage agenda. At least that’s what Tim Hicks promises. And he would know since he is apparently insane. Hicks is a member of Cornerstone World Outreach in Sioux City, a church facing IRS scrutiny for its rabid campaign to boot three members of the Iowa Supreme Court who are up for reelection. Apparently it’s a violation of federal tax law to mount a political campaign from the pulpit. But hey, it’s not God’s law so they apparently don’t have to follow it. When he’s not blowing his sax for the Cornerstone Praise Team, Hicks apparently likes to make videos under the moniker Creative Media Solutions. One of his latest, which is up on YouTube, features “Mike and Sharron” in a spoof on the eHarmony ads. “We were made to be together,” Mike says, his arm around Sharron. “But there was a time when society would not allow us to be married.” He continues, “You have to be friends before you’re lovers.”
Sharron chimes in, “That’s definitely true of us.” “And we were definitely friends before we were lovers,” he says. “But more importantly than that,” says Sharron, “before we were friends we were brother and sister.” “If it wasn’t for the Iowa Supreme Court, we wouldn’t be married today,” Mike says. And then, in unison: “Thanks, Iowa Supreme Court!” followed by clip of the pair kissing. On the lips. Eww! Look, as far as parody videos go, it’s actually pretty good. The production level is pretty high, the actors know how to say their lines (though they could have used a bigger make-up budget. I mean, come on. It’s hot under those lights. A little powder would’ve gone a long way, that’s all I’m saying), and it’s a clever premise. As far as arguments go, well, that’s another story. The whole “slippery slope” argument is a crowd favorite among anti-gay folks wanting to keep homos from marrying each other. And while it may be fun to imagine all of the horrible things that gays marrying might wreck on society, it just doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. To quote Andrew Sullivan, “If you want to argue that a lifetime of loving, faithful commitment between two women is equivalent to incest or child abuse, then please argue it. It would make for fascinating reading. But spare us this bizarre point that no new line can be drawn in access to marriage - or else everything
is up for grabs and, before we know where we are, men will be marrying their dogs.” Of course, to Hicks incest and homosexuality are pretty much the same thing in that they’re horrible and disgusting and against God or whatever. But in the reality-based world where rational people live, they are not the same thing at all. But in order to see that you can’t just dismiss gays and lesbians as bunch of sex-crazed “A getaway from the everyday … without leaving the gay scene behind.” – SouthFloridaGayNews.com

lunatics hell-bent on destroying marriage. You have to be able to see gays and lesbians as actual human beings capable of love and same-sex couples deserving of the protections that come with a legally recognized marriage. My guess is that Hicks isn’t capable of this. The Iowa Supreme Court is, however, and that’s screwing up the “homos are the worst” narrative. Sadly for Hicks and Co. that’s the only story they know.

Sympathetic GOP officeholders like Ros-Lehtinen, Atwater, Bogdanoff, LaMarca and even West remind us that not everyone in the Grand Old Party hates us. Like too many other constituents, LGBT activists are sick and tired of being taken for granted by a Democratic Party that often takes our votes, our money and our volunteer work and gives us little in return. Having to choose between do-nothing Democrats and often-hostile Republicans, many of our community members just stayed home. This is a good time for the Republicans to reach out to us, and for the Democrats to earn our support. Though it might be too late (or too early) to start a nonpartisan LGBT group in Broward County, many of the activists who made such groups possible in the past are sadly dead or burned out, it is an ideal that we must strive for. After all, if MiamiDade County (SAVE Dade) and Palm Beach County (Palm Beach Human Rights Council) can have successful, non-partisan advocacy groups, so can we. To quote a certain successful Republican politician, “let’s get to work.”
Letters, We Got Letters Comments on: “Not Gaga for Gay Rights,” (11/10) Dear Editor: At first, I thought Lady Gaga was amazing and extremely supportive of the gay community until I went to see her in concert. Her support of the gays and all her “little monsters” comes across as part of her act. She doesn’t sound genuine at all. It all comes across as one small part of her bigger plan to be famous.
“Brad” Dear Editor: This is just another example of some of the Gay discrimination within the larger GLBT community. Is it either because she is a woman, or because she is Bisexual? After all, we all know there is massive prejudice against bisexual people within the community, so maybe she should be fighting the fight of being completely selfish towards her own sexuality, instead of trying to help even though who are prejudice within the wider community like this author.
“Shane” Dear Editor: 1 Gaga is amazingly genuinely talented. 2 She is using her fame to only help the movement-what we need right now is support: gay support, straight support, and everything in between. ITS NOT IMPORTANT WHAT SEXUALITY OUR SPOKESPERSONS ARE DUH. 3 Gaga is amazing. When Born This Way comes out, I’m sure you’ll all be rocking out to. End of story.

“Thank you. You did a great job!”
I
n a guest column in a recent edition of The New York Times, a corporate consultant warned that companies should focus more on retention than on downsizing. Jon Picoult suggested that a turnover storm is looming, and that those employees who feel treated like equipment rather than as people will leave their companies as soon as they are financially able. He concluded that managers who are “more communicative, more appreciative, more connected, and more civil,” will retain valued employees more successfully than those who see their employees as “investment capital.” This raises the ongoing debate on the role of the corporate manager. Is the manager a coach or a task master? Should a manager care about the emotional wellbeing of his or her direct reports, or is the only criterion for a manager’s success the productivity he or she gets out of the team? It’s my experience that women managers are more likely to see their role as involv-
ing awareness of an employee’s personal life. Though I have been impressed by the sensitivity of many male managers, men are more likely to measure success by what numbers they bring in. Not having a corporate background, other than that I’ve gained through my spouse’s musings, and from my observations as a consultant, I don’t know what pressure managers face to produce, nor do I know if there is a universally-accepted standard of success for managers to follow. But I do know that employees seem to feel more valued when they get personal attention from their boss. “I don’t care if they give me a bonus, though that would be nice,” the checkout lady told me at the grocery store. “But it sure makes a difference when they say, ‘Thank you. You’re doing a great job, and we appreciate how hard you work’.” “Do you get that feedback?” I asked as I helped pack the produce. “I did today, and it felt great,” she said.
General Gayety
Look Homeward, Lesbian By Leslie Robinson
I
t was a North Carolina author, Thomas Wolfe, who wrote “You Can’t Go Home Again.” My partner Anne decided to ignore him and go home to North Carolina anyway. I decided to go along to help her clean out the family home in Rutherfordton. Over four grueling days we lifted and sorted an incredible number of boxes. By the end of all that heavy lifting, I’d mentally changed Wolfe’s title to “You Can’t Stand Straight Again.” In those boxes we found symbols of the tension between Anne’s lesbianism and her mother’s religiosity. And when Anne and I went into town we discovered another tension, between how we live in Seattle and how we felt we had to behave in a small Carolina town.
There was a third tension regarding the nutritional value of fried okra, but I’ll confine myself to the gay bits. When Anne was 14, her mother became a fundamentalist Christian. That’s one way of coping with a budding teenager. Anne’s mom liked to hand out religious tracts, and in one box, along with myriad tracts on accepting Jesus as your personal savior, sat copies of “The Gay Blade.” An image of a man with not one but two limp wrists graced the cover. Published in 1972, this tract proclaimed, “Out of Satan’s shadowy world of homosexuality, in a display of defiance against society, they come forth.” Sounds like a zombie movie.
“The regional manager was in, and he made a point of talking to each of us.” “Well, I thank you for your service, Darleen,” I said. “You’re great at your work, and I appreciate it.” Darleen lit up like a birthday cake, and said, “Why, aren’t you nice. You have a good day, you hear?” My former mail carrier laughed when I asked her if she ever got thanked by her supervisor at the Post Office. “Are you kidding?” she asked in amazement. “They never say anything to us. It’s all work, work, work. I can’t wait to quit this job.” She did quit soon after, and we haven’t had a regular mail carrier since. I stopped our latest delivery person recently to thank her. She said, “Oh, you’re one of the good ones.” “I don’t like all of this ‘touchy-feely’ stuff,” more than one manager has said in my diversity sessions. “Leave your private life at home. Do your job. That’s all I care about. I don’t care if you’re married, divorced, gay, purple, or whatever. Just do your job. That’s what you were hired for. That’s what you’re paid for.” Given the poor condition of the economy, many people may feel that employees who haven’t been laid-off have it good,
and shouldn’t complain about an insensitive boss because they too can be fired for rocking the boat. That’s a dangerous and counter-productive attitude for a couple of reasons. When the economy improves, talented people will have the freedom to leave, and those graduating from college who are seeking jobs will be better able to be selective. If a company has a bad reputation in the community for how it treats its employees, it will suffer in its efforts to attract and retain the best talent. In Toronto, Dallas, Hong Kong, London, Singapore, Atlanta, Tokyo, and Mumbai, when I assert that all anyone wants is to trust that they can come to work and feel safe and valued, nearly all heads nod in agreement. Almost everyone concurs that a happy employee is not only loyal, but also more productive. It would seem logical, then, that there be an established standard for managerial success that includes strong emphasis on treating employees as people, not a means to make numbers, and that validation, politeness, and expressed gratitude be criteria for advancement.
“Their power structure is widespread— they occupy all kinds of jobs.” Some are “even hinted to be in high government positions.” Yup, we snuck in right under the nose of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover . . . oh . . . wait . . . Most of the tract’s pages were devoted to a vivid rendering of the Sodom story, suitable in any decade for putting the fear of God in someone. Anne’s mom handed out anti-gay tracts at the same time her daughter was feeling lesbian stirrings. No wonder it took Anne a bunch more years and a run at Christian education before she became the openly gay woman of her mother’s nightmares. Speaking of Christian education, we also uncovered one of Anne’s grade reports from Moody Bible Institute. Perhaps her mom kept it because she was proud of Anne’s good grades. Or maybe she kept it, Anne theorizes, as proof that her daughter once had fine Christian intentions. Anne’s mother is still living, still handing out tracts to strangers. When we visited her in South Carolina on this trip, I wanted to ask if her stock included anti-gay treatises. I re-
frained. I don’t want my picture on the next round of tracts. During The Great Purge, Anne and I occasionally got away from the house and headed to Main Street. There in the town where she was born, where everybody still knows her family, she found herself reluctant to touch me on the street or in a restaurant. A natural toucher restrained. I felt the same. In that area of the country, where you can’t throw a hush puppy without hitting a church, and where I twice heard white people refer to someone as being black “but good,” discretion felt nearly necessary. A new feeling for me, and I liked it as much as barbecue sauce on a MoonPie. When we entered the antiques store, we found Anne’s childhood playmate working there. I heard Anne pause before introducing me as her partner. That was not the pause that refreshes. The next day Anne saw her again, and the woman said she was sorry she couldn’t say goodbye to me as well. You just never know what you’ll find when you go home again. In an old box or in people.

Modern Man Sitcom star Jesse Tyler Ferguson on hit comedy’s sophomore season, the gay couple’s controversial kiss and Nathan Lane’s kooky cameo. By Chris Azzopardi
F
irst kisses are always a big deal, and clearly that’s been true for two Modern Family fathers. The ABC sitcom hit a home run during its debut season last year, garnering critical kudos, healthy ratings and Emmy love for its funny family romp. But the gay parents, Cameron and Mitchell (played respectively by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson), have yet to reach first base.
The lack of lip action prompted frustrated fans to launch a kiss-pushing Facebook campaign, but Ferguson, who plays the series’ uptight lawyer, assures us it’s finally happening this season, which premiered Sept. 22. Ferguson, on the way to the Modern Family set in L.A., also chatted about risking his career for this role, Nathan Lane’s crazy-and-queer parties, whether there will be a Cam-Mitchell marriage and how the sitcom changed his life.
What’s it like to be back on the Modern Family set? You know, honestly, there hasn’t been a job that I’ve enjoyed more than this. It really does feel like a family reunion every time we get back together. How has the show changed your life? I have no anonymity anymore. It’s funny, because when I did The Class, (director) James Burrows said to the cast, “You have to say goodbye to your anonymity. It’s going to be different. I saw this happen with Will & Grace and Friends.” We were kind of terrified, actually. And then the show got canceled, and my anonymity stayed fairly intact. So I’m now experiencing that. You’re single – has it helped in the dating department? (Laughs) It’s actually been harder! I have a lot of people who I think are hitting on me, but then it ends up that they just want to be friends. It’s just hard to tell people’s intentions.
Who’d be your type: Cam or Mitchell? Oh gosh! It seems wrong to say Mitchell, but I definitely like Cam. He’d be a lot of fun to date, actually. If I could find an Eric Stonestreet-type who wants to date me, that could be great. Too bad Eric’s straight. Too bad, but it’s been nice test-running that chemistry with him. Modern Family has become a monster hit among gay audiences, even picking up GLSEN and GLAAD honors. How do you feel that the show has been a positive influence for gay and lesbian people, especially parents? Gosh, I mean it’s really hit very close to home because I have parents who also found it challenging at times. I have a gay sibling as well, and it’s been hard for my continued on page 30

SCRAPPY AMERICAN DANCERS
THE EMERY AWARDS! With the unfortunate news of the tragic suicides of some 5 gay youths at the top of everyone’s radar the past two months, it is great to see individuals making strides to provide safe and supportive environments regardless of sexual orientation. The annual NY Emery Awards honors those individuals and corporations who do so, as well as those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership within our community. This year’s honorees, presented last week in NY, were Arianna Huffington, Ryan Murphy (Creator of Glee) and fahion mogul Marc Ecko.
Turns out dance icons Edward Villella of Miami City Ballet and Twyla Tharp have a lot in common. “Twyla and I are both scrappy American kids; some Gay Nascar might even say brats,’’ Villella Fan Profiled in told an enthusiastic audience New York Times at the Career Transition Michael Myers, a Las for Dancers 25th AnniverVegas sales manager, partsary Silver Jubilee.Villella time journalist, and founder Marc Ecko presented Tharp with an of is trying to introduce award that was pure bling: an 18-karat pink Nascar to the gay community. gold Rolex watch. Out Unveils Magazine Cover Out, the world’s leading gay fashion and lifestyle brand, unveiled the cover to its highly anticipated Out 100 special double issue, also the publication’s 200th issue. This year pop star and new father Ricky Martin, MSNBC news anchor Rachel Maddow, Oscar-nominated actress Julianne Moore, Olympic figure skater
Johnny Weir, and designer and TV star Nate Berkus host an “An Affair to Remember” as the Out 100 cover honorees. Divided into three distinct sections, this year’s Out 100 features stunning imagery from photographers Larry Fink, Roger Erickson, and Jason Schmidt. Fink’s interpretation of Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball re-creates a time when gay rubbed shoulders with straight and elegance trumped intolerance. Erickson brings the spirit of the Stonewall riots to life, while Schmidt pays homage to the triumph of fame, talent, and individuality that was Studio 54. For more information, visit Out.com.

Demon Pack Brings Fashion to the Manor
By A. Sebastian Fortino

f you are familiar with the live entertainment that accompanies the dancing, imbibing, and flirting at The Manor on Saturday night they are offering something special for Saturday, November 20. At one a.m. Brett Schmidt will present a fashion show, highlighting both his tee-shirt designs and animation. Schmidt, who is originally from Texas, studied art at Sarasota’s famed Ringling
College of Art Design, draws from a variety of sources for inspiration. Along the way he also did some designs for Harley Davidson. He has been based in Miami and Fort Lauderdale for the past three years. “My style is a mix of elements from comic books, which is a big influence on my work, as well as organic, free flowing images,” says Schmidt whose website also showcases his animation. “Designers like Stephen Bliss are also a big inspiration because he started doing tee shirts and now he works with Rock Star Games as a Senior Artist.” Stephen Bliss recently reached out to Schmidt to give him kudos on his designs. Tee shirts with tattoo, tribal, or other funky graphics are all the rage now – seemingly across the board, regardless of age or gender. The one a.m. show will offer more than models in Demon Pack designs, Schmidt’s animation will be played throughout the night as well. “In addition to the models, we have an awesome concept for the show,” said Schmidt who won’t give anything else away. our boyfriend might be a self-absorbed diva sometimes, but trust me, he doesn’t hold a candle to Turandot, the titular character from the opening production last weekend of the Florida Grand Opera’s (FGO) 70th season. Set in ancient China, Giacomo Puccini’s opera tells the story of a beautiful princess who draws suitors from across the vast reaches of Asia, but will only marry if her prince can answer three enigmatic riddles. How hard can that be? There is a hitch, however. Her beauty belies a cold and outright cruel personality and a desire not to become the property of any man. Should her potential mate fail any of the riddles, his head lands on the chopping block. Enter Calaf, the latest young man to be entranced by Turandot’s beauty. Despite the warnings of his father, Timur, and servant Liu, Calaf rings the gong signaling his
intention to accept the challenge. Despite his correct answer to Turandot’s riddles, she refuses to marry Calaf and he offers an alternative, for her to discover his name by sunrise and if she succeeds he will submit himself to her executioner. Like so many of Puccini’s operas, death and bloodshed abound but without spoiling the ending, let’s just say Turandot surprises all. After a 2009-10 season of tight budgets and inventive, if relatively modest, productions, FGO’s production is a return to the tradition of grand opera with sumptuous beaded and silk-screened costumes and a breathtaking set that features a reclining dragon holding a giant iridescent pearl that serves as an alter to Turandot—all designed by Allen Charles Klein. Lise Lindstrom makes her debut with FGO in the title role and captivated the audience just as her character mesmerized her suitors. Elizabeth Caballero also drew hearty applause as Liu, as did Kevin Langan portraying Timur. Tenor Frank Porretta was a dashing Calaf who displayed excellent onstage chemistry with Lindstrom, and brought rousing cheers from the audience as he belted out the instantly recognizable aria, “Nessun dorma,” even as he found himself competing against thick orchestrations and the enthusiastic baton of conductor Ramon Tebar. The opera will be presented at Miami’s Arsht Center for five performances ending Saturday, Nov. 27 before moving to the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale for two performances on Dec. 2 and 4.

Holiday Book Gifting Guide: Fun Books with Pictures! By A. Sebastian Fortino
S
upposedly no one in South Florida reads, however, almost everyone loves a book with beautifully executed pictures and photos. So, I complied a list from books that I have recently reviewed. It might be a little early to launch a gift guide, but getting them this far in advance allows you to read them first – surely Amy Sedaris would approve!
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, by David Sedaris. This time Sedaris decided to surprise his audience – and left his largely personal narrative format behind. This collection of fables with animal character exposes the prejudice and insecurities of humans. The book is universal and certainly even appropriate for an intelligent highschool-aged reader in your life, hungering for adult fiction. On the Daily Show, when asked why Sedaris turned to fables, he said using an animal allows you to skip a lot of the background needed when developing a character – we know the characteristics of a squirrel, we do not need to know if they had a good relationship with their mother. It also has rich drawings by Ian Falconer. Each story is a quick, pre-bedtime read. For more information, please visit, HachetteBookGroup.com
Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People, by Amy Sedaris. David’s sister Amy recently followed up her successful 2006 home-entertaining book. “It’s often been said that ugly people craft and attractive people have sex. This book is not going to dispel that ridiculous fact,” says Sedaris. Simple Times boasts brilliant, coffeetable book quality photos. Chapters like The Joy of Poverty, Teenagers Have a Lot of Pain, and Crafting for Jesus will delight your
favorite crafter. Making Love offers suggestions on grooming the “love patch,” featuring her and co-author Paul Dinello in matching bathrobes demonstrating the sex act. For more information, please visit, HachetteBookGroup.com
The Artist Himself: Rand Holmes, a Retrospective by Patrick Rosenkranz. If you have any graphic novel lovers on your list consider this! Holmes post-Woodstock characters smoke, smuggle, and cry out for the legalization of marijuana. Many subjects are queer. “Gay Comix” shows a man wearing an actual closet, eyes peeping through holes, lusting after a shirtless. The bisexual Harold Hedd, in bed with his male lover, reads a book condemning homosexuality. Text in the lower right corner reads, “…why not try getting good an [sic] goddamned angry at a gov’t & society which has the unmitigated gall to dictate who and how you shall love.” For more information, please visit, Fantagraphics.com
Stuff That makes A Gay Heart Weep, by Freeman Hall – a gay response to Stuff White People Like! Hall complied over 150 things we hate. Gay no-no’s include, Facebook Gifts, Scary Sex Toys, Tap Water, Couples Who Dress Alike, Expensive Drinks – yet we hate cheap liquor, Having to get Up Before Nine A.M. in the Morning, Not Wearing a Halloween Costume, Closeted Cartoon Characters, Guidos & Guidettes, Being Poor, Losing Designer Sunglasses, Angelina Joile is Not Gay, and Cheap Cruises. This could be a litmus test for sexually ambiguous friends as it includes a quiz! For more information, please visit, GayHeartsWeep.com

HHS Awards for Suicide Prevention continued from page 3
The five-year grant will allow the Center, among other things, to increase its focus on high-risk populations such as LGBT youth, according to a press release. Anara Guard, senior advisor at SPRC, said there was no way to break out how much money would go toward any one population or activity, because that was not how the grant proposal was written. SAMHSA spokesperson Nancy Ayers noted the grant was not in response to the recent media attention surrounding a number of suicides by LGBT youth. Guard said the grant application process had begun in February, and funding began September 30 (although the public announcement came later). On October 26, U.S. Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), and Jared Polis (D-Colo.) sent a letter to SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde, asking that the agency take “immediate action . . . to better protect LGBT youth and prevent further tragedies.” Hyde is one of President Obama’s LGBT appointees. The letter questioned SAMHSA’s recent draft plan, Leading Change, and asked whether the agency is putting enough emphasis on “specific suicide prevention efforts” aimed at LGBT youth. Suicides among this group, the representatives wrote, are “caused by a culture of bullying, hostility, and violence against the LGBT community. Young LGBT Americans thus face unique challenges which require specific and targeted prevention efforts.” The representatives noted that Leading Change does mention an intention to address the needs of LGBT youth, but they are concerned that this is secondary to other objectives. They ask Hyde to detail current and future plans in this area, and ask whether SAMHSA anticipates needing “additional resources or legal authority” to accomplish them. “We want to be helpful,” said Ilan Kayatski, a spokesperson for Rep. Nadler. “The intent is to urge them to do all they possibly can under their current authority and to ask them if they have everything they need.” He also said that some resources could come from existing programs, but they are prepared to “provide legal authority and additional resources through legislation if necessary.” Dr. Richard McKeon, Suicide Prevention Branch Chief at SAMHSA, said in an interview October 19 that SAMHSA has several
grant programs for preventing youth suicide, but none specific to LGBT youth. He noted that SAMHSA’s National Suicide Prevention Lifeline works closely with the Trevor Project, which runs a suicide prevention lifeline for LGBT youth. It will even transfer calls from LGBT youth directly to Trevor. Charles Robbins, Trevor’s executive director, sits on the Consumer Subcommittee for the National Lifeline. But Robbins said the Trevor Project receives no money from SAMHSA. The SAMHSA-funded SPRC was created in 2002 after the 2001 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (developed under the Clinton administration) recommended such a center. It has taken several steps to address suicide risk and prevention in the LGBT community. In 2007, it partnered with the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to host a conference on the topic. SPRC then released a 63-page white paper in 2008 on suicide among LGBT youth. Guard said that after doing so, they had more speaking requests than they could accommodate. They are therefore now creating a Workshop Kit that draws from the white paper and is designed for people in schools and other youth-serving organizations. She expects the kits to be available this winter. SPRC is also providing administrative and infrastructure support to the new National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. The Alliance, which officially launched on September 10, is a public-private partnership designed to advance and update the 2001 Strategy. Such a partnership was envisioned in the Strategy itself to help guide its implementation. SAMHSA official McKeon acknowledged that it has taken some time for the Alliance to be created, but “We were really pleased by the people who stepped forward to make it happen now,” including SAMHSA Administrator Hyde, Secretary of Health Kathleen Sebelius, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. In her speech at the Alliance kickoff, Sebelius noted that LGBT youth were a highrisk group. Two notable members of the Alliance executive committee are Trevor’s Robbins and Kevin Jennings, now Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS) at the Department of Education. Jennings is also the founder of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

PC Lauderdale Celebrates New Location & Services By A. Sebastian Fortino
PC
Lauderdale has left the Drive, but they have not shuttered their business. Recently, owner Eric Reivik hosted a grand opening for their new location. Clearly, this small business is looking towards a bright future despite the economy’s inclement weather. “We needed a larger location,” said Reivik, who attributes needing a larger space to facilitate repairs and merchandise. He’s excited about the move. “We had 800 square feet on the Drive, and now we have 1300 square feet. As much as we hated to leave this was a positive business decision.” Another incentive is that 75,000 cars per day make their way down Oakland Park Boulevard, a major artery in Broward County. Comfort for their clients due to the increased space is another benefit. Reivik boasts they now have a comfortable lounge for clients to relax while waiting to see a specialist. They also now have the space to offer Verizon and Comcast business services.

Cindy McCain vs. Cindy McCain By Jarrett Terrill
I
n a tweet on Friday to her followers, Mrs. McCain wrote: “I fully support the NoH8 campaign and all it stands for and am proud to be a part of it. But I stand by my husband’s stance on DADT.” This stands in direct contradiction to statements she released less than 24 hours before that via the NoH8 campaign. In a new video released by the campaign, various celebrities contribute condemnations against anti-gay bullying and give statistics about gay suicide. Cindy McCain is one of the celebrities in the video. Cindy McCain offers this condemnation: “Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future. They can’t serve our country openly. Our government treats the LGBT com-
munity like 2nd class citizens, so why shouldn’t [the bullies]?” Apparently Mrs. McCain is confused about where she stands on repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. If she supports “her husband’s stance”, then she is against repealing the law. However, if she supports her own stance, then she agrees that it should be repealed. Perhaps the upcoming week will see a clarification on this point.

azine. What was it like for them – and him, especially – to see you on the cover of Out? It was challenging for him, but also really continued from page 17 exciting. He was sort of confused because I parents, so I think it’s been really helpful for them to see their son, not just on TV in a gay made reference to the Jonas Brothers and having crushes on all of them. It means what relationship, but able to be more open and it says! They’re handsome men! out in the community in real life as well. He’s a funny little guy. He hasn’t grown up There are a lot of great TV shows that are in the entertainment industry, so with my just sort of putting it out there. They’re not Emmy Award nomination (for Outstanding “gay” characters; they’re just great characters Supporting Role in a Comedy Series), he who happen to be gay, just operating among asked, “How does that come to be?” It needs society like they do in real life. It’s really great for families who maybe have a challenging time to be broken down for him, and that’s OK. I’m willing to take those steps with him. with that. I wish there was a reference point The Cam-Mitchell kiss is a hot toplike Modern Family or Glee to show my parents when I was a kid – and to reassure me as well. ic lately. When will it happen? And is there really a wedding in the works? Your parents, particularly your First of all, with the kiss thing, it’s been father, had a hard time with your sexuality, as you noted in Out Mag- built up to a kissing episode – and I have
to say, it’s not going to be an episode about kissing. (Glee creator) Ryan Murphy criticized us, saying that it shouldn’t be this big thing, and he sort of didn’t have his facts right because it’s not going to be this big thing. The Facebook campaign and all these people rabidly excited about the kiss are what’s made it a big thing. There’s a big PDA episode that deals with public displays of affection in general, but the kiss might not even be a part of that episode. We’re trying to integrate it in a way that’s just very natural. And with the gay marriage, we were just so excited about Proposition 8, but we certainly don’t have a wedding episode planned. We hope to be on the air for a very long time, so we don’t want to put all the eggs in Season 2’s basket and then not have any stories to tell.
While we’re on the topic of eggs, is there another baby on the way? I would be thrilled with a second kid in the future, but I don’t think it will happen this season. Honestly, as an actor, I don’t know if I can handle another kid right now (laughs). It’s enough when we have the twins (who both play their daughter, Lily) on the set. I play with both of them and look at their parents and I’m like, “How do you do this all the time?” Has it turned you off from being a father? No, it’s actually whetted my appetite. I’ve been a little baby crazy lately, but I’m single – so there’s that. If the opportunity arose, I would totally jump on it. How will Nathan Lane play into Cam and Mitchell’s lives in Season 2? He’s our older, gay and flamboyant friend

who throws these very eccentric themed parties, such as the “Studio Fifty-Fourth of July Party.” In this episode he’s throwing his “Oscar Wilde and Crazy Brunch Party” and we have to all dress up in Oscar Wilde gear, and we’re trying to get out of going to these parties but he’s very sensitive about people who cancel on him. It’s a really funny episode, and he’s perfect for this part. I could see Cam having more fun than Mitchell at these parties. Even he’s reached the breaking point. When we were actually shooting our scenes without Nathan Lane, the ones that lead up to his entrance, we’re in some very specific Oscar Wilde costume gear, and I looked at Eric – and he was wearing this fantastically flamboyant outfit – and said, “If this is what you’re wearing, Nathan Lane has to be a few notches above this?”

November 17, 2010 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com are always spot on. You recently were in some Central Park productions, The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino and The Winter’s Tale. What’s it like moving between theater and TV? Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson play My roots are in the gay parents on ABC’s Modern Family theater, so it was harder going from theater to my first sitcom. I love Have you given Eric tips on playthe immediate response from the (theater) ing gay? I know he’s got the “zaudience. lived 2008 show Do Not Disturb and again now on Modern Family, do you fear being typecast? Honestly, no. I would never have given up the opportunity to play Mitchell because of that fear. It’s been interesting, because Do Not Disturb was not successful at all. It’s interesting to see how playing gay on one sitcom just did not work and here it’s working brilliantly. I’m happy to have the opportunity to play gay on a sitcom that is working so well, and I just can’t worry about being typecast. Even gayer than either sitcom role is your hilarious rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” on YouTube. Are you inspired to take that further? I’m trying to put together a show. It’s probably going to be a pretty gay show, actually. Gaga musical theater, that’s what you can expect.
