ORT WORTH, Texas (AP) The city of Fort Worth will pay $400,000 to a man severely injured during a raid on a gay bar two years ago, a settlement that avoids a federal civil rights lawsuit. The City Council approved the settlement Tuesday with Chad Gibson, who says Fort Worth police and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission used excessive force. Mayor Mike Moncrief says the settlement

doesn’t admit any police officers’ wrongdoing or city liability. A deputy city attorney said Gibson’s lawyer planned to sue Fort Worth and the state’s liquor board in federal court, but they went into mediation instead. The liquor board and city police determined in their investigations there was no excessive force. Two agents and a supervisor with the liquor board were fired, and three Fort Worth officers were suspended.&

Broward County grand jury has indicted a Hollywood man on two counts of first-degree murder and several other charges in the slaying of two Wilton Manors men, a police spokeswoman said. Kevin Mark Powell, 47, and Stephen Duane Adams, 52 were partners for 29 years. They were shot repeatedly, and their bodies were found inside their home on Dec. 26, police said.

two counts of armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, unlawful use of a credit card, and grand theft auto, according to Alesia Furdon, spokeswoman for Wilton Manors police. About a week ago, Avsenew was moved from a Polk County jail to a Miami-Dade facility, where he was held on an unrelated violation of probation charge from Monroe County. On Wednesday, he was relocated to a Monroe County jail, officials said. Additional details of the events that led to the slaying have not been released.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Talk with your doctor about ways to help protect your immune system. HIV treatment is now recommended for everyone with a T-cell count of 500 or less and should be considered when T-cells are higher than 500, according to the DHHS* and the IAS-USA†, along with other factors. Starting treatment early may help protect your immune system and vital organs. Today’s medicines may have fewer, more manageable side effects. They may help you live a longer, healthier life. Receive helpful information about living with HIV that you should know. he White House announced Tuesday evening that President Obama and Brazilian President Rousseff have established a “special rapporteur on LGBT issues at the Organization of American States.” It also drew attention to a United Nations declaration, backed by the U.S. and joined by 85 other countries, calling for an end to violence and persecution against LGBT people. Obama was in Brazil Saturday and Sunday as part of his first presidential visit to South America. The trip, which was to focus on the economy and trade, has been in stiff competition with the news that American forces – as part of a United Nations action – are now bombing Libya. Brazilian President Dilma Vana Rousseff, who has been in office only two months, also issued a statement March 21 about fighting homophobia.

The White House announcement was issued through Press Secretary Jay Carney’s office, saying the President “was pleased to announce during his trip to Brazil that he and President Rousseff agreed to promote respect for the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals through the establishment of a special rapporteur on LGBT issues at the Organization of American States.” This “special rapporteur” will !"#$%&#'()*+,-,)."##(%'.)/"*0&$)%')+",1%2)2,$()0##34 be the first of its kind in the interThe White House press statement Tuesnational system. Some reader commented that the newspaper is doing a disservice to our community by ‘washing our dirty linen in public.’ We are, because cleanliness is the best disinfectant, and news is news. This community has lived an illusion too long. We are not as noble as we think we are, not as perfect as we make ourselves out to be. There is fraud and misfortune in the gay community, drug abuse that cannot be ignored, and misdeeds that can not go unnoticed. What makes dozens of gay people think they can go on an international cruise ship carrying hundreds of party drugs and not be subject to the same laws as anyone else?

The Pride Center at Equality Park honors this newspaper this weekend by presenting us with a Media Award for being a ‘Star of the Rainbow.’ We accept the award graciously, but we are not here for awards. The GLCC deserves an award for showcasing our community with pride and dignity and a professional executive director, who was himself generously honored this past weekend by Lambda Legal, an organization distinguished in its own right. We are here to be a community newspaper that is the voice for our community, and we hope the words we publish can shine more light then they do darkness upon our lives. For that to happen, we each have to do a little better, care a little bit more, and reach for the goodness we are all capable of living. Let’s make that commitment together. Let’s make ourselves proud of our pride.

f President Barack Obama submits his intervention in Libya to Congress for its approval and he was still Senator Barack Obama, he would vote against his own use of force resolution. After all, he opposed his predecessor, George W. Bush, for invading Iraq. Obama seems to have taken the first step into quicksand and will find it impossible to extricate himself. He has been lured by conservative governments in the London and Paris to embrace the cause of saving Libyan civilians, a fight he probably cannot accomplish without ground troops and likely cannot win without regime change. Bush-43 spent six years trying to convince us that Iraq was not another Vietnam. Now Obama is trying to sell the idea that Libya is not another Iraq. But, of course, it is. In both cases, we face a hostile dictator who, with his political and military cronies, has made a good living by abusing his own people. Even if Gadaffi goes, his vindictive military is as likely to trigger a guerrilla war as Saddam’s did in Iraq. And, in both countries, we intervene as a foreign power, distrusted by the population. And, in each case, we face a nation where the crowded

cities and the vast open spaces around them make guerrilla war highly possible. Add to this mix that Obama took the action consulting only with the U.N. Security Council, not the U.S. Congress. He, even now, refuses to send a war powers resolution to Congress. The American Left, and all its Gay supporters, would never allow a Republican to do the same. He begins the war with only 51 percent approval for the intervention among Democrats. A Democratic president cannot sustain popular support for a war by relying on Republicans. Obama is setting in motion the same forces that toppled Humphrey and Johnson in 1968, Bush the First in 1992 and Hillary in 2008. He is betraying his political base and will pay for it at the polls. Repealing “Don’t Ask; Don’t Tell will not suffice to hold his party together. In President Clinton’s move to the center of 1995-1996, he took care to cave into the demands of Jesse Jackson to preserve affirmative action, despite the president’s personal preference to make it gender and racially neutral. He did so precisely to avoid a primary fight so that he could accommodate the Republican Congress on domestic policy and budget issues without worrying about his left flank. Obama has cut no such deal with the likes of Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, a national leader of the American Left and a favorite among many hard-core Gay activists. If Obama stays in Libya, Kucinich probably gets into the race. If Obama continues to stay, Kucinich will move up in the polls. Such an outcome will split the Gay Democrats to the delight of Gay Republicans and conservatives. At the very least, Kucinich’s challenge will hamper Obama’s attempts to move to the center since complying with Republican demands for spending cuts will enrage his liberal

f you had to pick one picture of yourself, and one personal artifact, to represent your life for all future generations, what would it be? That’s your Golden Record. And if you don’t choose the photo and artifact, it will be chosen for you. Thirty-five years ago, NASA sent up two Voyager spacecrafts with greetings to other life forms in the universe. Besides the message, translated in 55 languages, the 12-inch gold-plated copper disk contained 115 representations of planet Earth’s literature, music, and samples of architecture. The house down the street from us in Provincetown was one of those selected to show aliens how we lived. The disc is called the Golden Record. For the past several weeks, I’ve been asking well-known LGBT people for one personal photograph and artifact that will represent

them in the Stonewall National Museum & Archive for all future generations. Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked, sent a handmade bowl with the image of Elpheba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Lynn Lavner, early singer, song writer, and comedian, has sent the signed original score of one of her most popular songs, and a poster of herself in leather. Leslie Jordan, of Will and Grace fame, wants us to have a signed Playbill from the West End theater district of London where he is now appearing. One picture and one artifact is all they get. That’s their Golden Record. A common conversation with friends is, “If you had to live on a deserted island, what one type of fruit would you want to live on? What one book would you take?” Prisoners on Death Row are offered for their last meal whatever it is they would like to have. What is your one favorite meal? Your

one favorite dessert? When I was a child, Mom used to make whatever we wanted to eat on our birthday. I always asked for Hungarian Goulash, which in our house was ground beef, tomato, and noodles. My dessert was Angel Food Cake with lemon icing. At a fundraising event in Miami yesterday for the Provincetown Film Festival, I drifted off after John Waters’ taped greeting to think about how much my life had been impacted by films, and I tried to pick the one movie that touched my life the most. The first ones that came to my mind were, Boys in the Band, Making Love, and Brokeback Mountain. But on further consideration, I’d have to pick Juliet of the Spirits, the 1965 film by Federico Fellini that enabled me to leave the monastery, and start tasting the fruit from the Garden of Eden. One photograph, one artifact, one meal, one dessert, one book, and one movie are all part of our Golden Record. They are the recording of our lives. We each have to decide for ourselves whether we care to be remembered. Some people live their entire lives for their place in history books, including gay history books. If that’s important to us, we should start thinking about the photo and the artifact we want displayed in the Smithsonian. If we don’t select the picture and the artifact, someone will do it for us. And we might not be happy with it. For those of us who don’t care about being remembered, there’s either little or no pres-

sure to select the representations carefully. But it is nevertheless an interesting exercise to help us think about how our lives might be summed up. It’s also interesting to hear how others sum up their lives. In response to my talking about the Stonewall National Gay Museum & Archive recently, an older gay man asked, “What do you put in a gay museum? Dildos?” I was furious. I thought about my own life, and about all of the artifacts of LGBT people that I would like to have displayed, such as the bandaged teddy bear Greg Louganis held between dives when he won gold at the Olympics after banging his head on the platform, the tennis racket Billie Jean King used to beat Bobby Riggs, and a putter from transgender golfer, Lana Lawless, who was barred from playing by the LGPA. I’d like to see a costume from Elton John, a guitar from Meg Christian, and a photo of Chaz Bono with his mother, Cher. I’d like to see the photos and artifacts of every LGBT person who has a story to tell, and would like it remembered. My life would not be well represented by a dildo. I’ve never owned or used one. But after I calmed down, I thought maybe this person’s life might be represented by a dildo, and that was okay. We all create our own Golden Record. Visit Brian-Mcnaught.com to earn more about him.

he volunteers of Positive Action for Living Safely (PALS) Project are scheduled to be honored on Sunday April 2, with a Volunteer Star of the Year award. Four of those members who will accept the award on PALS’ behalf spoke with SFGN about their involvement. One theme was unanimous across the board – all volunteers are thrilled they and their colleagues are being honored for their dedication, support, and commitment to PALS and its focus. Which is to support the HIV-positive community through mentorship and education. The volunteers interviewed enjoy their work, and have been PALS from between three and six years. The mutual accolades they give are touching and, indicative of a strong sense of commitment and fellowship. Jose Guerreo was motivated to join because most of his friends at the time were HIV-negative. He needed the support of the group as, initially, a member seeking their community. “I was trying to find a place where I could meet other men who are HIV-positive where we could have dialogue and conversation, and a place where I could find information to better my life and educate myself, Guerreo said who is a longterm survivor and is proud to provide hope to those newly-diagnosed. “It’s a different chapter, being newly diagnosed and a longterm survivor to deal with those issues. Laz Gonzalez, too felt isolated. However, after doing the Choosing Health Options & Improving Communication Effectiveness program, found a network of people

When I came out of the program I was ready to take back my life and bring balance to it, health wise and spiritually. That’s why I volunteer. Caraglia is also proud to serve as a coordinator for the Florida AIDS Walk through the Pride Center at Equality Park.

“It’s amazing we’re being honored, he added. “The volunteers and staff are such a group of amazing men. We don’t expect anything in return. Lee Adrian is willing to do whatever PALS needs to foster assistance and support, whatever comes up. “The programs they offer have such a big impact on people’s lives, in addition to the rewards of volunteering you get to witness prigrams which really help to transfmorm people’s lives, said Adrian, who is also a financial analyst and finds the presentations and public speaking he has participated in has also given back to him on a professional level. He was adamant in stating volunteering is not about getting back, but such reciprication is further testimony to PALS community enrichment. “I am just happy for all of the volunteers, he said of PALS, “who are a committed family of not only volunteers but participants as well. Going forward this award will allow the community to see the good work which PALS and its volunteers do for the community. Please visit GLCCSF.org and click under Programs to link with PALS.

first knew there was something queer about astrology back in my teen years, when I first saw Walter Mercado on television. Though Mercado’s homosexuality has never been established, this flamboyant, androgynous, perfumed, bouffant, heavilymade up psychic seemed to me to be gayer than a screaming parrot on top of a banana bush. Today, the indefatigable Mercado (now known as Shanti Ananda) continues his psychic mission on Spanish-language TV and newspapers, though now with enough cosmetic surgery and Botox to put both Joan Rivers and Amanda Lapore to shame. Walter Mercado was not the first gay/androgynous/gender variant to succeed in the field of astrology, nor would he be the last. In fact, LGBT people’s interest in astrology goes back to the beginning. “Gay people love astrology,” Matthew Pizzuti recently wrote in outfrontcolorado.com, “After fleeing from their parents’ homophobic Christian churches at puberty, they delight in coming across a spiritual system that has no god to judge you and no priest or minister to say that you are intrinsically corrupt. In astrology the key figures are planets, which are unconscious and therefore do not nag you about promiscuous sex, sodomy or tithing.” According to gay astrologer Jack Fertig, whose horoscopes appear in a variety of LGBT media including SouthFloridaGayNews.com, “all kind of people are attracted to astrology, but GLBT people have generally tended to be more independent thinkers so we are a bit more open to exploring ideas outside the mainstream.” For her part, the lesbian author and scholar Camille Paglia called astrology the “oldest organized art form of sexual personae.” In the Encyclopedia of Homosexuality, the late gay scholar Warren Johansson wrote about the historic link between queer people and astrology. As far back as 500 B.C.E., “a neo-Babylonian text... says that ‘love of a man for a man’ is governed by the constellation Scorpio. ... During the Renaissance,... the Florentine Neoplatonist Marsilio Ficino (who was homosexual) created a vision of the cosmos linking humanity with the heav-

are the late Michael Jay, author of the classic Gay Love Signs: The New Astrology Guide for Men Who Love Men (1980); Pen Vassar, who coined the word “Homostrology” and whose horoscopes appear on his website homostrology.com; Lee Lehman, whom Fertig describes as “absolutely one of the best astrologers now practicing;” Michael Lutin, whose “approach is incredibly insightful and

enly bodies through emanations of love... In the sixteenth-century, ...Michelangelo ... seems to have assuaged his guilty conscience with the belief that his attraction to his youthful assistants (garzoni) had been decreed by celestial forces beyond his control. The first modern attempt to correlate astrology with homosexual behavior was made in the 1920s by the German occultist and right-wing theorist Karl-Günther Heimsoth. Independently, the American homophile Gavin Arthur discovered the occult tradition in Paris in the 1920s. In 1960, having settled in San Francisco, he published a book, The Circle of Sex, which correlates character types with astrological influences. Arthur is credited with having launching the idea of the coming of the Aquarian Age, which was to become celebrated through the musical Hair.” Gay people continued to make contributions to astrology in the 20th and 21st centuries. According to Fertig, “Alan Leo was a huge proponent of astrology...Richard Idemon, and Tony Josephs wrote extensively on the connections between astrology and mythology. Jim Lewis developed a system called ‘astrocartography’ that is brilliant for certain geographical questions. They’ve all passed away, but some of the top astrologers today are queer.” Among the more recent queer astrologers

hysterically funny;” and, of course, Fertig. Is there anything specifically “gay” about astrology? According to Fertig, “altogether no, but the constellation Aquarius (ruled by Uranus) is actually Ganymede, the boy that Zeus fell in love with and made cup-bearer (water carrier) for the gods. ... A frequent question through the millennia has been if there’s an astrological ‘signature’ for homosexuality or however queerness was understood before that word was coined on May 6, 1868. Sexuality is actually much more complicated than that.” Joe Perez, author of Soulfully Gay, wrote in gayspirituality.typepad.com that “many astrologers believe that there is no one ‘gay signature’ in a birth chart but that there are a variety of astrological factors that can indicate a predisposition towards homosexuality. There never has been a comprehensive study of homosexuality in birth charts, so there’s no hard evidence regarding exactly what this signature might be. Even though sexual orientation may not be predictable from the birth chart, some schools of astrology maintain that the chart can help us to understand the universal spiritual lessons we are here to learn through our homosexuality.” With that in mind, Perez devised a “Stonewall Chart” for our community dated June 28, 1969, the date of the Stonewall Uprising. One of Fertig’s major contributions to the

science of astrology is his study of “Uranus: The Queer Planet.” In a lengthy article of that same name (found in starjack.com), Fertig describes Uranus as “the Sky-god, stormy, windy, unpredictable, the first male principle who joined with Mother Earth in the very beginning and has not embraced a woman since. But we do find in mythology a number of same-sex lovers with connections to the sky.” Uranus later lost his reproductivity when he was castrated by his rebellious son, Chronos (Saturn) and “rather than more children our sky-god’s seed is channeled into art and beauty. How gay is that!” Uranus also represents “the impulse towards science, humanitarianism, and anti-authoritarianism. Its relationships are collegial, and anti-hierarchic. From its first sighting it was as disruptive as a drag queen in an NFL locker room. And it continues to be. The anti-authoritarian nature of Uranus makes it extremely difficult for leaders to emerge in the gay community.” Recently, astronomers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society stirred the astrological pot when they concluded that, because of the moon’s gravitational pull on Earth, the alignment of the stars was pushed by about a month, creating a new 13-character Zodiac with the addition of Ophiuchus the snake holder and a revamped astrological calendar. This does not disturb Fertig, who argues that this development will not affect the science of astrology. “Astronomers who have no idea how astrologers work tell us we’re doing it wrong. In other words, they’re making dogmatic proclamations about something they haven’t studied which is quite the opposite of science. They say that we fail to consider the Precession of the Equinoxes, a 26,000 year cycle which does in fact create a slowly growing difference between the astronomical constellations and the astrological signs. Any good astrologer knows all about that and we can fully account for it. That’s a technical explanation that fascinates astrologers but cause most other people’s eyes to glaze over.” To make a long story short, LGBT people (and others) will retain our fascination with astrology, and we will continue to ask our new acquaintances that age-old question: “What’s your sign?”& Jesse Monteagudo (Jessemonteagudo@aol.com) is a South Florida-based freelance writer and journalist. of the Alibi. According to the suit, by Aug. 2008 Bellehumeur and Smith had no response to numerous requests to inspect the Alibi’s books and records for 2007. In a brief phone conversation with Bellehumeur, before being referred to his attorney, he said it was important to him, for tax purposes, to know if the Alibi was or wasn’t making a profit. In the lawsuit, Smith said he has a right to be physically present at the Alibi and its management offices for the purpose of discharging his duties as a named licensee on the Beverage License. According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Smith was listed as secretary on Georgie’s Alibi al-

second lawsuit was filed against the operators of Georgie’s Alibi by two men who purchased 28.33 percent of the restaurant in 2007. The suit alleges that they have not been allowed to inspect and copy the books and records of the restaurant. SFGN reported in its March 8 edition, George Kessinger, founder of Georgie’s Alibi, sued Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete for more than $1.2 million for shares of the establishment he sold to Padgett and Negrete in December of 2007. But before the Kessinger deal was made, court records show that Padgett and Negrete sold 28.33 percent of the Alibi to Dennis Bellehumeur and Garrison Smith for $977,385 in November of 2007. Bellehumeur and Smith made a down payment of $250,000 and agreed to monthly payments of $5,380 and a balloon payment of $579,185 at the end. According to Kessinger, he received $175,000 from Bellehumeur and Smith’s down payment from Charmichael, Inc, a Florida corporation controlled by Padgett and Negrete, as partial payment for Kessinger’s shares of Georgie’s Alibi. In Feb. 2009 litigation between Bellehumeur and Smith began when they filed suit against Padgett and Negrete to enforce the rights they say they have as shareholders to inspect and copy the books and records

cohol license from Dec. 18, 2007 to October 21, 2009.

J8""%$->KQ9-82!J! Court documents state that in a Dec. 31, 2008 letter Padgett and Negrete’s attorney ordered Smith to stay away from the Alibi, refrain from making phone calls to the business, or its principals and cease and desist from all contact with Alibi employees, vendors and clients. On Jan. 7, 2009, an attorney for Bellehumeur and Smith responded in a letter with concerns about how the Alibi was being operated. “My clients have voiced concerns to Mr. Padgett over the operation of the business,”

the letter states. “In specific, the business has deteriorated significantly under Mr. Padgett’s management, going from a profitable business to once that may be barely profitable. My client has not received all of the distributions it is entitled to from Gat Bar [Georgie’s Alibi corporate parent] and is concerned that Padgett either may be wasting corporate assets or using corporate assets for his own personal advantage to the detriment of Wilton Place LLL. [Bellehumeur’s and Smith’s corporation.] In a Feb. 24, 2011 legal filing by Padgett concerning the suit, he claims that during 2008 the Alibi’s monthly profits were insufficient to provide any distribution of funds to shareholders and several of the months ran at a loss. “I had to put money into the business to cover our costs during those months,” Padgett said in the filing. Padgett also claims that it became clear by Dec. 2008 that Bellehumeur’s financial condition changed since 2007 causing Bellehumeur to default on the note to purchase the Alibi’s shares. The legal battle over Bellehumeur and Smith’s request to view the Alibi’s books continues. A judge ruled Aug. 8, 2009 that Bellehumeur and Smith are permitted to view and copy Alibi’s corporate records. But in a Feb. 3, 2011 filing, Bellehumeur and Smith said that for the past year and a half, Padgett and Negrete have blocked them from inspecting the books.

never had to drive before moving to Florida, with subway systems in Philly where I was raised and New York where I went to college. In fact, most childhood friends didn’t learn to drive until they left for Penn State, joined the suburbs, or the army. In the Northeast, if one says, “Oh, I don’t drive,” the response is favorable – often envious. “Oh, you were raised in the actual city, you’re so lucky!” In Broward, however, when one says, “I don’t drive,” the response isn’t favorable. They assume a severe DUI history. A former neighbor was so convinced of this he nicknamed me Sue Ellen. I was pleased at first, thinking this was in honor of Scarlett O’Hara’s sister. However, the moniker was coined after Sue Ellen Ewing of Dynasty who escaped from a sanitarium drunk and smashed up a car. Happily I rebuked him, stating I was an embryo when that episode premiered and he was in high school. I read the book several times to prepare for the written test. However, whenever a co-worker offered to drive me to the DMV time conflicts arose. The trip was twice rescheduled due to car trouble, an ominous reminder with the freedom of a drivers’ license comes many burdens. Finally, I took a personal day, read the book for the thousandth time. My dear

full year I’ve lived in Fort Lauderdale…” etc. I learned I was allowed to take it again. After another hour, avoiding stares of a teenager in a Cardinal Gibbons uniform after her father asked what school I went to and awkwardly revealed, “Fordham University, class of 2001” I was given another monitor. The results were the same. I flew back to the administrator’s desk. “Well, third time’s the charm,” I laughed, smiling brightly. However, I wasn’t allowed

friend Claude picked me up at 9 a.m., and dropped me at the DMV. After a mere hour I was summoned, given a monitor. I took the first test, about actual driving. I took the second test, about road signs. I failed the first, and passed the second. Knowing the history of the DMV in terms of timeliness my New Yorker mindset manifested. “Please we must let me take this again, I haven’t been able to get here for the

to take it a third time on the same day. My smile disappeared. “An exception must be made,” yada, yada, “deadlines,” yada, yada, “at work, we have to make an exception.” Her response was negative. My response requested her superior, a woman with a sad visage, which seems to be all the rage for DMV employees. Calmly, sweetly I related my situation. “You can only take it twice,” she said

bluntly. “You don’t understand, I’m thirty, with a degree from a major university, professional, an editor of a newspaper. I’ll get it the third time,” I responded gravely. “Sorry,” she said. “Well,” I demanded. “Where is YOUR superior? We must get an exception passed, OK?” I wasn’t announced as much as gruntingly pointed at after she got the attention of a man two seats down. I explained myself – blankly he asked if I studied. “Yes, but I really need to get this done today. We’ve gotta make an exception. We’re talking five questions. I’m an editor and writer with a degree from a major university in New York. I’m no idiot!” “Degree or no degree, you still failed,” he said mockingly. My jaw dropped. “Did you even go to college?” He replied, “Yes, University of Pennsylvania.” Being from Philly I laughed. “Why would you work at the DMV with an Ivy degree? Where’s your superior?” However, he the superior was calling the police. “Are you kidding,” I screamed. “Over letting me take this stupid test one more time. Teenagers are getting their permit. You can’t arrest me!” A cacophony of laughter ensued, from disgruntled workers, who apparently relish telling “indigent customers” disorder at a government facility could get them arrested. Behind me the audience of driver hopefuls laughed aloud. Feeling like the sitcomtrope dream of appearing naked in front of class…I ran out and cried. “Relax,” said Affinity Driving School, who promised they’ll successfully teach me how to drive. They taught a 90-year-old greatgrandmother recently. “Everyone fails the written test at first.” However, the great-grandmother did pass her first time. For now, it’s a good thing I love to walk.

&B,->*IA=4-3N-QFA-2=;,7 JG-2,75=,-K3I=:73: May the judges’ T-shirts ride up with wear. On Nov. 2 last year, Election Day, senior Kate Cohn made a pro-gay statement at Falcon High School in Peyton, Colo., by wearing a shirt reading “Marriage is so gay.” She said Principal Mark Carara told her the shirt was offensive and violated the dress code forbidding clothing potentially disruptive to the academic environment. I’m guessing that means fishnets are out. At least for guys. Cohn’s mom said Carara later likened the T-shirt to apparel promoting alcohol or drug use. That increasingly wellknown arbiter of fashion, the ACLU, sent a letter to school administrators demanding Cohn and others be allowed to wear the shirt, and the two-week ban was lifted. Perfect. Two weeks gave her enough time to wash her shirt and make it all pretty for its re-debut. I can say with certainty that T-shirt tizzies haven’t been limited to the younger set or the recent past. Back in the mid-’90s I covered a protest by adults in Hampton Beach, N.H., outside a T-shirt store that peddled a couple of antigay shirts. One read “Silly faggot, dicks are for chicks,” and the other said “Aids Kills Fags” or something of that ilk. What I remember best is a teenager pointedly buying one of those shirts during the protest, then sheepishly returning it afterwards because he needed the money to get home. The other day I spotted a different T-shirt twist to the American LGBT story. Openly gay veteran political consultant Fred Karger, in Washington, D.C., to file for the Republican presidential nomination, met with the Republican National Committee chairman. Karger—completely unknown to the public and, to repeat, openly gay—told Roll Call, “We had a great meeting. I gave him one of my T-shirts.” I’d like to know what slogan is on that shirt. Maybe “Karger 2012: No, Really.” +)36+) (%94,-2

H

e Americans like to express ourselves with our chests. I’m not speaking of Jane Russell, or even Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’m talking about our proclivity for wearing T-shirts with slogans on them. Americans have been human billboards for decades. The slogans on T-shirts celebrate, advocate, advertise, unify, decry and polarize. Americans have lots to say—on shirts made in Honduras. So it makes sense that one part of the gay story in this country is being played out in cotton/polyester blends. Over the past years high school students and younger, kids on both sides of the gay issue, have been wearing their hearts on their sleeves. And getting sent home for it. The latest shirt-skirmish is still unfolding at a middle school in DeSoto Parish in Louisiana. Student Dawn Henderson wore a shirt reading “Some Kids are Gay. That’s OK.” Principal Keith Simmons ordered her to change her shirt or go home. It occurs to me that any kid aiming to get out of a test at school doesn’t need to fake the flu—just don a controversial T-shirt and in minutes you’ll be back home watching Judge Judy. According to the ACLU of Louisiana, DeSoto school officials claimed the shirt was “distracting.” The ACLU sent Simmons a letter arguing that Henderson has a First Amendment right to express her opinion across her chest, as long as the school allows clothing with slogans. If the school decides to forbid clothing with slogans, it might be hearing from Nike. In another T-shirt to-do, which actually began back in 2006, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled a month ago that students at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Ill., could wear T-shirts saying “Be Happy, Not Gay.” The court maintained a “school that permits advocacy of the rights of homosexual students cannot be allowed to stifle criticism of homosexuality.”

he second part of my title has to be the most unique quote in my notebook, but a lot of my notes from Happy Hiney Health stand out. The lecture was, well as Dr. Elie Schochet put it, “If there were a gay high school, this would be sex-ed.” He discussed the dos and don’ts of anal health and hygiene to keep a healthy, happy, hiney in front of roughly 100 people. Schochet, a Colorectal surgeon with a practice at Holy Cross Hospital, spoke in front of a crowded room at The Pride Center at Equality Park, on Thursday March 17. The PALS Project and “Life Goes On” Elton John Foundation sponsored the forum, with a dinner reception by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Schochet began by discussing the physical structure of the anus and how the primary difference between homosexual and hetero-

sexual – meaning vaginal intercourse – is self-lubrication, and working with dual sphincters. Schochet highlighted how each works, and that fighting them could cause pain and trauma. To keep an overall happy hiney, Schochet discussed anal hygiene, and expressly emphasized the importance of fiber. “All of my patients, regardless of their issue, the first thing I do is get them on their fiber,” Schochet said. He explained fiber soaks up water in the intestines, creating a comfortable, regular movement. Baby-wipes, scented, hypoallergenic, or fragrance free, should all be avoided, as should douching, or using an enema. In nations where legumes and whole grains *0-'/6 )97/%0%2%83

“If you lose something up there, please don’t fish it out, call me right away!”

are a staple there is very little anal cancers occurring. If you can’t get enough fiber through food in your diet, the doctor recommends overthe-counter products with high levels of psyllium. Also, over-douching, he warns, “can eventually get to a point where that is the only way you can evacuate,” and can cause “an unexplained ooze, from all the extra water up there.” If you must use water to clean, use no more that two tablespoons worth of water, and an ear-dropper. For those of you struggling with your partner’s size, dilating, not stretching will help. Start by using a set of surgical anal dilatators from a surgical supply store. Keep

in mind one of Schochet’s themes of the lecture, “If it hurts, don’t do it!” Trauma can be caused by any number of things, but if you feel pain stop, and tops need to read the non-verbal cues of the bottom. Also, the top should always be “on the bottom” despite numerous tempting positions. Another very important topic of the lecture was the importance of early screening for HIV-positive men and women for anal cancer, and regardless of status the importance of an anal PAP-smear for men. “As more people are living, 20, 30 years with HIV the rates of anal cancer are returning to pre-PAP-smear rates,” Schochet explained. These rates didn’t increase in the 80’s and 90’s and in the early new millennium because of the high mortality rate of HIV/AIDS, but as the medicines increase the life expectancy of the HIV-positive population, the rates of anal cancer have increased. In Africa, the rates of anal-cancer can be seen on a dramatic increase for this reason.
