he Florida Marlins and SFGN have entered into an advertising agreement for the 2011 Major League Baseball Championship season. The Marlins will be taking out onehalf page ads during the baseball season, promoting their new stadium, under construction in Miami, and the many specials being offered this season at Sun Life Stadium. “Everyone knows that baseball is my passion, my love, Publisher Norm Kent said. “But more importantly this deal shows a willingness on the part of the Florida Marlins, a professional sports team, to reach out to the LGBT community. Kent added that he is currently working with the marketing department of the Florida Marlins to host a ‘Pride’ Night later in the season. In the past, as Publisher of the Express Gay News, Kent and the Florida Marlins organized an AIDS Awareness Night at the stadium, where the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus sang the national anthem. “We are looking to coordinate another
program that promotes South Florida AIDS foundations, Kent added, indicating announcements are forthcoming. In the meantime, the Florida Marlins have already held one of their patented Saturday night concerts, featuring the popular South Florida band, ‘Pitbull,’ and are offering many mid week specials, including box seats for as little as $7.90 each to promote 790 AM radio, their broadcast station, and Miami Herald Two for Tuesdays. Friday June 3, is also the incredibly popular ‘Bark Park’ Night, where fans can bring their four legged friends. The Florida Marlins Community Foundation also supports many charitable causes and good will efforts, including programs allowing children in local South Florida youth organizations to experience the thrill of a major league ballpark. The Fans Care program, for example, has enabled over 65,000 children to attend Marlins games. “We want to be part of that, Kent said. “We want to show the LGBT community is a part of our community, not apart from it.

he was.” That encapsulates the life and career of Glenn Burke, Major League Baseball’s first openly gay player. And it is a measure of the sports world’s continuing discomfort with homosexuality that it has taken three decades for his compelling tale to be told. Out. The Glenn Burke Story premiered last month in San Francisco. The one-hour documentary played to a sold-out audience at the Castro Theatre – Burke’s old backyard. It described his rise, from multi-sport star at Berkeley High School to his heralded signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers as “the next Willie Mays.” And then his fall. In 1978 – one year after starting in the World Series – Burke was traded to the Oakland Athletics. By 1980 he was out of baseball. Despite being loved and admired for both his athletic skills and great clubhouse personality, it is widely believed that Burke’s tacit acknowledgement of his sexuality led to the quick end of a promising career. The documentary details his public announcement of his homosexuality in 1982 (on the Today show with Bryant Gumbel), to a life filled with drugs and prison, through a period of homelessness and his AIDS diagnosis in 1994. Burke succumbed to the disease – but his story ends with support from the A’s and some former teammates. The documentary pulls no punches. Claudell Washington recalls Oakland manager Billy Martin introducing Burke to his new teammates: “This is Glenn Burke and he’s a faggot.” A high school classmate says that Dodger executives offered Burke $75,000 to get married. His response: “I guess you mean to a woman?” Former sportswriter Lyle Spencer remembers Burke’s popularity. When he was trad-
ed, several Dodgers cried. And Pamela Pitts, Oakland’s director of baseball administration, says Burke was amazed his former team would reach out to a man with AIDS. “I can’t believe someone wants to help me,” he said. It is a sad testament to his life that Pitts had to say this about his death: “I do believe he was in a much better place. His demons were gone.” After the premiere, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area hosted a town hall meeting in the theater. Bay Area professional athletes, journalists and sports executives discussed the film and whether the sports climate has changed in the three decades since Burke played. San Jose Sharks hockey broadcaster Drew
Remenda took his 14-year-old son to the screening. The boy could not understand why anyone cared about sexuality, but Remenda took a more nuanced view. With Americans still battling over issues like gay marriage and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Remenda said, “I don’t know how far we’ve come.” Gay athletes, he said, are still “fear-
ful” about coming out. Remenda described the movie as “a great story of courage” about Glenn – but a story of cowardice about society. San Francisco Giants president and chief operating officer Larry Baer countered that “there is enlightenment in sports.” He pointed to his team’s promotion of the AIDS-awareness Until There’s a Cure Day as far back in the early 1990s. Giants manager Dusty Baker took a lead role in the event. The Giants stood up – as Burke did – for “what’s right,” Baer said. Discussing any potential problems his team would face today from advertisers if a Giant came out, Baer replied: “The answer should be, ‘Too bad.’ At the end of the day, we have to do what’s right.” Of course, he acknowledged, things might be easier in San Francisco than other cities. Four-time Super Bowl champion Bill Romanowski said that nearly every day in the San Francisco 49ers locker room, he hears gay slurs. “It’s not right,” he noted. “But it just is.” Asked whether having an openly gay athlete would divide a team, Romanowski said “probably.” But, he added, far smaller issues divide teams too. “That’s reality,” he explained. The 49ers’ trainer was openly gay, Romanowski said. “That opened my eyes. He was a phenomenal trainer – and a really good man.” Fourteen-year NFL fullback Lorenzo Neal said flat out: “People will feel uncomfort-
able” with a gay teammate. “We’re humans. We can’t control other people’s emotions.” But Bay Area sports columnist Ray Ratto thinks things will be fine – if the openly gay athlete is “an indispensible player.” That, he said, would force teammates to realize that their feelings of discomfort were less important than the opportunity to win big with a gay guy. Jackie Robinson’s teammates didn’t like him at first, Ratto said, “but they came around when they realized he’d help them make money.” Robinson was, of course, the first black Major League Baseball player. His team was the Brooklyn Dodgers. They moved to Los Angeles in 1958 – where, 20 years later, they cast aside the man who eventually became the first openly gay baseball player. e have only just begun,” Geraldine Ferraro wrote in inscribing a photograph to me after the 1984 campaign. I keep it above my desk, to remind myself that Rome wasn’t built in a day, that it takes courage and perseverance when you’re trying to change the world. Gerry looks impossibly young in those pictures, nearly 10 years younger than I am now. And as I look back, I was practically a baby, barely 30, when it was my job, as executive director of the platform committee, to travel around the country with her, highlighting her expertise and political skills, all in an effort to get a woman on the ticket. And we did. There was the “A Team,” an informal group of women activists whose first step was to get her the platform position, and who worked tirelessly with me to make sure that her chairmanship provided precisely the platform she needed to get national attention and the respect of the guys. There was the platform team -- a very little team, including Pam Fleischaker, Charles Atkins, George Kannar and Meredithe Napper -- which managed to pull together major hearings in almost every city in the country. The goal was to showcase not only her smarts, but also her savvy -- her ability to pull together a party that had almost drowned in a bloodbath of platform fights in
1980 into one that came together on a united platform in 1984. There were the outside agitators, led by NOW and other groups, who kept the heat on Vice President Mondale to keep his promise to seriously consider a woman for the No. 2 slot. But most important, there was Gerry. In the days since her death, I’ve watched as all kinds of people have described a woman they didn’t know. Some of the descriptions make me laugh. Notwithstanding Madeleine Albright’s tireless efforts, Gerry never considered herself the world’s expert on foreign policy. She knew what she believed in, but I’m not sure any of us -- except Madeleine -- could have named the leaders of every African or Asian country. She could be very tough. She was as feisty as they come. She made mistakes -- as she would
be the first to admit, including that famous quip about “Italian men” not wanting to release their tax information. But for a generation of women, her selection marked a milestone in American politics. Like the Kennedy assassination, so many women can remember exactly where they were when they heard the news. “It’s a girl,” Linda Wertheimer pronounced on

NPR. And not just any girl. Gerry was my first woman boss. As I think about it, she may have been my only
woman boss in all these years. Did it matter? In her case, it did -- not because we sometimes had fun shopping or catching a bite or having a drink; not because we laughed together at the way the press covered her clothes and her lipstick. It mattered because she taught me lessons that went beyond politics. Gerry loved politics, but she loved her family even more. Between politics and her family, family came first. In those days, she was fiercely devoted to her husband, to her mother and to the three children she loved more than life. She got beat up plenty in that campaign, from all corners. But I never heard her question her decision or whether we had done her a favor or a disservice, no matter how nasty some of the attacks. It was only after the campaign, when her husband and children were placed under the sort of microscope that only applies to the family of the first (or second) woman to be on a major ticket, that I heard a trace of regret. She never intended for her family to be hurt. It pained her so to think that her dream had been paid for by her kids and her husband. Years later, she would literally beam as she described how well her children were doing, the grandchildren she adored and even how she was teaching her beloved husband to make sandwiches so that if this terrible disease took her, he could take care of himself. Geraldine Ferraro taught me many things. She taught me courage and determination and perseverance. She taught me about grace under fire. But the most important thing she taught me was that love of family is the bedrock. “A woman of valor, who can find? Far beyond pearls is her value.” We found her in Geraldine Ferraro. May she rest in peace.

ou’re assigned to train the troops fighting in Afghanistan about the new policy on openly gay people in the service. Imagine that you’re huddled behind a rock with three soldiers who have been pulled from their posts to listen to you. You have 30 seconds. Start talking. You’re boarding an elevator and a colleague makes a derogatory joke about transgender people. You’re a well-known Human Resources employee. Two senior managers look at you waiting for your reply. You have just eight floors to address the issue. What is your “elevator speech?” You’re sitting at a table with a straight ally, representing your company at a gay workplace conference. A gay person comes to your exhibition booth, picks up your company’s give-away rainbow wrist band, and makes a lewd comment about how he might use it. He then asks the straight man if he’s gay, and when he learns that he’s not, he says, “Oh, what a waste.” How do you respond before he walks away? In all three of these situations, the last one relayed to me on Facebook as having recently happened, require a response. Not to say anything is a gross violation of your role as an employee, not to mention the moral imperative we all have to speak up.
The U.S. Army has begun gay sensitivity training and plans to have over 1 million people educated by the end of the summer. They will begin with chaplains, lawyers, and investigators. Next, they will train commanders in the field, and then 2.2 million active and reserve troops. Army Command Sergeant Major Marvin Hill has said the training is forthcoming in the battlefield. So, start talking. You have thirty seconds. With that time limit, I’d say: “Listen up. This is a direct order from your commanding officer. Gay people are allowed to serve openly. If you harass them in any way, with jokes, religious bullying, or ostracizing, you’ll be involuntarily separated. If you see it, report it. Am I clear?” That was just 15 seconds. I’d then allow for questions. What people need to know at the most basic level is: What is the rule? Where does it come from? What is expected of me? What are the consequences? Thirty-second talks don’t increase sensitivity. They change behaviors. That’s the first goal: Stop doing
the bad things you might be doing. When you have more time to talk, you help the individual understand the reason for the rule, and you put a face on the issue. Change in attitudes will follow change in behavior, if safe space and time are given to the educational process. From the first floor to the tenth floor, you have time to say, “Oh, my. It looks like we need some more diversity training. I know you didn’t have hostile intentions, but your joke is actually considered harassing behavior. The company is very serious about
making this a workplace in which everyone feels safe and valued. Can you see how what you thought as ‘funny’ might make someone in this elevator feel unsafe or unvalued? There may be no transgender people among us, but one of us might be married to someone who is transgender, or have transgender children or family members. There are certainly transgender people who work
among us. We just can’t make those kinds of jokes at work or when we’re representing the company offsite. I apologize if I’ve made you uncomfortable, but all of us are required by company policy to speak up. If we don’t, we can be disciplined. As an HR person, if I hadn’t said something to you, I’d deserve to be fired.” To the obnoxious, emotionally-stunted gay man who felt free to speak so inappropriately in a work-related setting, I would say, “We haven’t met. I’m Brian McNaught. Our company would consider what you just said as sexual harassment. Wouldn’t yours? At work, or in a work-related situation such as this, we’re not allowed to make sexual jokes, or to demean a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. I was embarrassed when you asked my straight colleague here if he was gay, and then told him it was a waste that he was straight. Who do you work for?” Many people remain silent in the midst of inappropriate speech or behavior because they insist that they don’t want to embarrass the person or make things worse. I think they usually are silent because they are so afraid of not being liked. There aren’t a lot of people like that in my circle of friends. There ought not to be a lot of people like that in the foxhole, elevator, or conference center. It’s not like it takes up a lot of your time to speak up. You can do it in 30 seconds or less. Visit Brian-McNaught.com to learn more about him.

ike all Israeli citizens, choreographer Ronen “Roni” Koresh was faced with compulsory military service at a time when he yearned to be free. “I danced before….but when I became the property of the Israeli military, dance became such a beautiful thing. I knew it was something in my life that was important, that I really wanted to do,” he recalls. “When your freedom is taken away from you, the appreciation of what you had becomes emphasized and enhanced.” His military training reinforced the discipline he had experienced in the rehearsal hall, and for Koresh, took many personal limitations “out of the equation.” “The idea that tomorrow is not guaranteed to anybody really hit me,” Koresh says, “especially in a country that is constantly under attack.” After his discharge, Koresh again applied himself to dance, studying and dancing un-
der the masters Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham, but sticking to a personal itinerary on his creative and expressive journey. “Their commitment made them prevail. They created a language, and a following,” says Koresh. “I wanted to find my own voice and not imitate someone else. I became an artist to express myself.” With a successful professional company and school in Philadelphia, Koresh has many opportunities for such expression. This weekend, the Koresh Dance Company brings his latest work to Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center. Entitled, Sense of Human the full-evening performance began as a smaller work called Evolution. “(Audiences) saw the piece and were telling me how much they were moved by the sense of humanity,” he explains. Turning to his friends, poet Carl Mullen and musicians Nick Candle and Greg Smith, Koresh collaborated on what would
become a dance with broad vocabulary, but little narrative that would express the stages an individual approaches through life. “Some is euphoric and wonderful, sometimes it’s sad, other times it’s comedic. I decided to go through all those ideas that a person goes through in the course of a week, a year, maybe a lifetime. I wanted to investigate the emotions we go through and create scenarios that will show different states of one person. It’s very moving because you can see yourself in it,” Koresh says.

n “A Saving Remnant historian Martin Duberman chronicles the life of two radical individuals, Barbara Deming and David McReynolds. Deming was born in 1917 and passed away in 1984, while McReynolds celebrated his 80th birthday a few years ago and still works for the causes he feels strongly about. Both Deming and McReynolds identified as gay, however they did not “come out publicly until later in life. They had so much going on that they did not wish to curtail their work for the greater good by identifying as gay or lesbian. Deming was born to a well-to-do New York City family on the eve of World War I. She expressed lesbian feelings as early as
her college years. McReynolds was born to a solidly middle-class California family with strong Baptist roots in 1928. He would come to work for the War Resister’s League for over forty years, beginning in the late 1950s. The two “radicals knew each other and exchanged correspondence throughout their careers, however I was still prompted to ask Duberman why he linked the pair in his book. “I started with a list of ten gay, radical people, involved in various movements, said Duberman during a phone interview from his home in New York. “When I came to Barbara and David I realized I could focus on their interactions because they knew each other, which is important. Barbara left behind a large archive, and McReynolds too has a trove of papers of interest to historians. How they became involved
in activism is almost a spiritual journey. “Feminism was her gateway to the lesbian movement, said Duberman. “Barbara was never a lesbian separatist, although David would accuse her of this. She became disappointed with the men on the left with whom she worked and became an advocate of raising consciousness for women and lesbians. She felt once women were able to separate their existence from men that she would return from the kind of separatism that consciousness raising called for. Consciousness raising, an interesting term and quite apropos for an individual who marched for black civil rights, suffered through hunger strikes and remained committed to a policy of nonviolence. Deming believed non-violence was not a feminine virtue, nor that violence was a masculine virtue. “They both were devoted to non violent tactics, said Duberman. “That’s very important because they not only resisted nuclear weapons but any kind of vio-
lence – including warfare. Their commitment to so many causes is rather daunting, and makes one question one’s life in terms of working for the common good of society and the role of activism in contemporary society. Duberman says, in his book, Deming and McReynolds could not be involved in all the important social causes that arose and arise. It also gives pause – given the technology offered by the internet and ability to “be aware at the stroke of a button – to wonder about current issues and struggles. As gay people are we too focused today on the so-called gay agenda? “I think the movement is far too assimilated, with the two big agendas being marriage and serving openly in the military. In the early days we never would’ve dreamed about these issues. We thought we were supposed to show the straight world we were different because of sexuality, and that obviously this gives us a different perspective. Instead gay people are now invested in talking about themselves as just folks. The legacy of Barbara Deming and David McReynolds is to stand out, to not be “just folks. A Saving Remnant will surely become a staple text of LGBT Studies.
