n April 25 in Tallahassee the first hearing will have taken place on proposed cutbacks in funding for HIV and AIDS medications and services in Florida. The initial hearing will be followed by hearings on May 3 in Miami, a May 4 in Tampa, and May 9 in Miami once more. Florida, with one of the highest rates of HIV infection in the country, more than 3,000 people who receive assistance from the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. “It is clear that the need is significant, said Michael Ruppal, Executive Director of the AIDS Institute, based in Washington. “Reducing the eligibility to further limit the number of people accessing services only

compounds the problem and puts many more lives at risk. This is a time to take action and tell the state how reducing the eligibility criteria for HIV/AIDS services will hurt those in need. All Floridians are encouraged to insist the state not reduce funds. The AIDS Institute recommends to voice support against proposed cutbacks by preparing a written letter about why guidelines of the Federal Poverty Level for eligibility from 400 percent to anything less would be detrimental to people you know living with the disease. Attend one of the public hearings and read your statement into the public record. You can submit your written statement to Suzanne_Stevens@doh. state.fl.us through May 6 if attending in person is not possible. Above all else, be vocal and share to friends, family, and colleagues the fact many people might loose access to life-saving medication. Please visit TheAIDSInstitute.org for more information.

tlanta-based David Magazine, which launched a February operation in South Florida has run into difficulties with its Fort Lauderdale team of salesmen. Their business relationships have come to a screeching halt. Both Kenny Fritz and Brad Casey, the magazine’s primary salespersons, have left the company, announcing their departure in a press release to SFGN Tuesday afternoon. The short-lived operation is enmeshed in an unfolding and emerging swell of accusations and replies accusing Publisher Matt Neumann of bouncing checks, not paying employees, and not compensating printers for services rendered. Neumann denies all the accusations being thrown his way, telling SFGN that “we have had a hard time since we started, but we came out last week, and we are coming out tomorrow.

He said as of Tuesday afternoon, “Neither Casey nor Fritz have technically resigned. Casey and Fritz think otherwise. “I took the position without any contract with the company and a very enthusiastic approach to helping build the David brand, Fritz stated, but, he added, “I have since

found that all the promises stated to me in that first meeting were all broken promises. Brad Casey, who has returned to Mark Magazine already, echoed the same sentiment, indicating the Fort Lauderdale operation began unfolding within three weeks. He said he took the new post with David because of the extraordinarily favorable terms Publisher Matt Neumann offered him, including “partial ownership of the magazine. Neumann responded forcefully, stating that “Casey and Fritz had better hope that I don’t start talking about them. The story I have been getting is that they have been working for Bobby Blair [Mark Magazine’s publisher]all along. I advanced each of them $2500 and they had no sales after six weeks. I terminated their salaries, put them on commission, and I feel they owe me money. They wanted guarantees so they could make a transition but after that point, I did not want to give guarantees; that’s when I started getting threats from them. Blair replied to the charge of ‘sabotage’ by stating that “Under no circumstances would I ever indulge in such ludicrous activities, and that my reputation is far too important to have considered or engaged in such a scheme. I could not have dreamed that up in my wildest imagination. Casey alleged that while Neumann assured him he was financially solvent, he discovered instead the Atlanta publisher was soliciting local businessmen for loans to keep the operation running. Unidentified sources confirmed the same. “What is wrong with businesses asking for financing? Who doesn’t, Neumann con-

fided, acknowledging he was going to banks and others for secondary seeding sources. Meanwhile, Bruce Bogan of ‘’Planet Press opined that he is amongst the aggrieved parties, claiming Neumann owes him close to $4,400 for personal loans and services performed in printing David Magazine. Bogan asserts that Neumann told him the “accounts have not been paying him, so I can’t pay you. Bogan laments that “I have been hearing the same story every week for four weeks now. Neumann rebuts Bogan’s claim by saying that the monies owed are due in trade for ads that were run in David Magazine for Bogan’s various enterprises, and that he should “expect an invoice for the same. He admitted taking a personal loan from Bogan but said it was “repaid. Bogan scoffed at Neumann’s response, stating that “Neumann has hurt a lot of people locally. He said he had money for a year, but he appears to have lied to lots of people. Casey says he is also owed money by Neumann, and his decision to leave David was based on “broken promises, bounced payroll checks, the instability of the operation and the attempts to borrow money from local businesses to keep the magazine afloat. I no longer wanted to be associated with such an operation. “I told them I was not going to give them a handout for doing nothing every week, Neumann replied, “and that the employees have been more than compensated. Meanwhile, Neumann said he will take over the sales himself, and that the magazine will be published by Angstrom Graphics this week. Neumann closed by accusing Fritz of forging a company check and engaging in “industrial sabotage, adding that “over a period of six weeks, Fritz and Casey did nothing but talk bad about the publication. Casey said that was not so, that he went their enthusiastically, with the thought of owning a magazine again. “But the money never came in, he said, “and I felt that good people in our community were getting hurt. It was time to leave David. Now, Casey is saying to Neumann, “It is time for him to leave town. He is hurting too many people.

he U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a memo April 6 encouraging child welfare agencies to better serve the needs of “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the foster care system. It said such agencies should avail themselves of federal funds for training staff on how to better serve this community, and it called LGBT prospective parents “a largely untapped resource for providing foster or adoptive homes to LGBTQ young people. In the memo, which was issued without a press release, Bryan Samuels, commissioner of the HHS Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF), said, “LGBT parents should be considered among the available options for States and jurisdictions to provide timely and safe placement of children in need of foster or adoptive homes. The memo was sent to state, tribal, and territorial agencies that administer federal child welfare funds under Title IV-E of the Social Security Act. Title IV-E provides federal matching funds to states to help with adoption and foster care expenses for eligible children. In the memo, Samuels states his “fundamental belief that every child and youth who is unable to live with his or her parents is entitled to a safe, loving and affirming foster care placement, irrespective of the young person’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. A higher percentage of LGBTQ youth, he wrote, exist in the child welfare system and among those living on the streets than would be expected based on the estimated percentage

And when a foster child’s case plan calls youth and parents. In October 2010, ACYF for reunification with his or her family, he awarded the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center a

$13.3 million, five-year grant to create a model program to support LGBTQ youth in the foster care system. And in 2000, under President Clinton, the ACYF-run National Adoption Information Clearinghouse published a report on “Gay and Lesbian Adoptive Parents: Resources for Professionals and Parents. It still exists at the ACYF’s Child Welfare Information Gateway (childwelfare.gov). The older report debunked several myths about children of lesbian and gay parents, such as they were more likely to become gay themselves. At the same time, it stated that “the effects on children of being raised by lesbian and gay adoptive parents cannot be predicted—an assertion more recently called into question by the social science evidence presented by LGBT advocates in a number of cases involving either adoption or marriage rights. The evidence showed no differences in adjustment or well being among children with LGBT parents. A bill in Congress that would withhold federal funds from states that discriminate against LGBT people in foster placements or adoption died in committee last session, but U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and U.S. Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) are expected to introduce similar bills again this session. In the past two weeks, three states—Arizona, Illinois, and Virginia—have considered bills or policies that would limit adoption rights for unmarried and/or same-sex couples. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) on April 18 signed a measure giving “placement preference to a married man and woman over a single adult if all relevant factors are equal. The Illinois measure failed to pass, and the outcome is still unknown in Virginia. And two major court cases in the last two weeks have ruled in opposite ways on whether treating LGBT couples differently violates constitutional principles. The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said “no (based on the U.S. Constitution) and the Arkansas Supreme Court saying “yes (based on the state constitution).

RENTON, N.J. (AP) — Former Gov. Jim McGreevey, who abruptly resigned in 2004 after declaring himself “a gay American and admitting an extramarital affair with a male staffer, has had his pursuit of the Episcopal priesthood put on hold indefinitely. The New York Post reported Monday that the church has deferred his bid to join the clergy. The church, which accepts gays and women into the clergy, wants McGreevey to wait so he can put more distance between his possible ordination and the fairly recent turmoil in his life: his coming out in a nationally televised speech, his resignation and a messy divorce from his wife, Dina Matos, in 2008. The Rev. William Sachs, director of the Center for Interfaith Reconciliation in Richmond, Va., said it’s “not unusual for people to be deferred. Sachs said church officials would be interested in how someone with McGreevey’s baggage would handle the ministry. “How would he apply what he’s learned to his ministry? Does he translate from being the person he was in the political realm to being in ordained ministry, Sachs asked. “It doesn’t surprise me there would be an instinct to defer.

Neither McGreevey, a Democrat, nor the Episcopal Diocese of Newark would comment on his potential ordination, saying the process is confidential. McGreevey, 53, earned a master of divinity degree last spring, three years after entering General Theological Seminary in New York City. The Rev. Patricia McCaughan, who writes for the Episcopal News Service, said ordination is a complicated, subjective process that differs from state to state. “If a person is deemed not ready to go forward, that doesn’t mean that’s the end, she said. “People can always try again. For now, McGreevey said he plans to continue ministering to inmates and helping raise his daughter, who is in elementary school. “I’m enjoying prison ministry, particularly with the women in Hudson County Jail who have suffered tremendously in their lives, he said. McGreevey, a former Catholic altar boy, shocked the nation by declaring his homosexuality with his stunned wife and parents at his side. He was the nation’s first openly gay governor, but he resigned three months later. He converted from Catholicism after leaving office. His divorce from Matos followed a protracted public trial during which she claimed she was duped into marriage to advance his political career. The couple spent four years married and living together and had one child, named Jacqueline. They formally separated in February 2005, three months after he left office. They publicly sparred about their breakup, each writing a tell-all book about the relationship, with almost no detail deemed too embarrassing to reveal. McGreevey has lived with real estate executive Mark O’Donnell in Plainfield since 2005. He has made few public appearances since leaving office.

ust yesterday, it seemed that Maryland-based anti-gay activist, Bishop Harry Jackson, was a shoe-in for providing the nutty quote of the week. On a right-wing radio show he said that attempts to win LGBT marriage equality were “a satanic plot to destroy our seed. Unfortunately for the bishop, Kimberly Daniels, who Jackson once glowingly called his “comrade in war, easily upstaged him. For the unacquainted, Daniels is a former drug dealer, prostitute and military veteran turned preacher who is now running for Jacksonville City Council as a Democrat. (Yeah, that’s not a typo, she plays on the Donkey team.) However, it is her recent quotes and not her distant past that is most disconcerting. Her bizarre beliefs include the notion that Halloween candy can be tainted by demons. “I do not buy candy during the 6&0!"1(3)*#-&"(/:)/.+26&-4(3)#)*"0+21#% Halloween season, Daniels told Charisma magazine on October 27, 2009. “Curses are sent through the tricks know is whether the hard shells of M&M’s make and treats of the innocent whether they get them demon-proof? Not surprisingly, Daniels is it by going door-to-door or by purchasing known as a “demon buster who gives exorit from the local grocery store. The demons cisms to rid people of various maladies. “We have experienced much success in onecan’t tell the difference. (Pretty dumb desession deliverances, Daniels wrote in her mons, I’d say.) Of course, the big question we all want to book, Clean House, Strong House...However,

there have been times when I have personally walked homosexuals, ex-witches, and drug addicts through sessions that took place over a couple of years.â€? There is no word on weather former Delaware U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell was among the witches miraculously saved by Daniels. Researcher Bruce Wilson dove further into Daniels’ treasure trove of quotes this week and discovered some new gems that will likely – or should – end her political career. For example, Wilson discovered a video of Wilson saying, “You can talk about the Holocaust, but the Jews own everything.â€? Jews own everything? This is news to me, because I had no idea that Bill Gates, Sam Walton, Warren Buffett, and Donald Trump were Jewish. Now that I know, I hope they enjoyed Passover! Perhaps, the most shocking quote from Daniels, who is African-American, came when she portrayed slavery as a heavenly gift. “I thank God for slavery,â€? preached Daniels, in a sermon that was captured on video. “If it wasn’t for slavery, I might be somewhere in Africa worshipping a tree.â€? (And who would be here in America to warn us about the danger of Satanic Skittles?) On her campaign website, Daniels writes, “If I am elected, I will work with my colleagues to seek solutions to problems in our city that trouble the hearts of the people.â€? One can only imagine what “solutionsâ€? this deeply disturbed woman might have in store for Jacksonville residents if she wins. Incredibly, on March 17th she received 43-percent of the vote and forced a May 17th

runoff with Republican David Taylor. Daniels’ realizes that city council races usually have a low voter turnout. Her strategy is to run a stealth campaign and flood the polls with fundamentalist voters, while avoiding reporters who will ask tough questions. She will likely use the Christian media and a network of churches in heavily religious Jacksonville to disseminate her message and get voters to the polls. The Examiner website opines: “If you are running for office, you need to be available to talk to voters and reporters. This is something Ms. Daniels apparently is not able to do. Given her offensive statements and crackpot views, Duval County’s Democratic Party needs to step in and take a stand before it is too late. They ought to demand that Daniels immediately quit the race and apologize to voters. If she refuses, the Democrats ought to endorse Taylor or at least make a strong, unambiguous statement distancing themselves from Daniels’ views. I’m sure the Democrats want to win, but at what cost? The local and state Democratic Party should not allow their name to be associated with such blatant bigotry. The Party has to make it clear that Daniels’ outrageous views’ are anathema to its core principles and values. If not, they are no better than craven Republicans who pander to the Religious Right for the sake of raw power. The thought of Daniels on the City Council is scarier than a Halloween haunted house filled with Reese’s Demon Butter Cups. Voters must be made aware of the radicalism and ridiculousness she will bring to Jacksonville if elected.

uppose your job was to make sure that there were enough left-handed scissors to meet the demand. Would you make enough for everyone who was left-handed, or only for those people who publicly identified as left-handed? Gary Gates, a demographer at the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, might unwisely counsel you to go with the lower number. If you took his advice, not only would you sacrifice potential income, but a lot of left-handed people would go without proper scissors. In his recently released study, “How many people are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender? Gates has announced that there are only 9 million Americans who fit those descriptions. He goes with the average number of people who have identified themselves in surveys as openly gay, lesbian or bisexual, and then adds people who have transitioned as transsexuals. If you are in business, and believe Gates’ figures, you will sacrifice potential income, and fail to value the true diversity of your workforce. A recent study has shown that there are as many people in the closet at work as there are out at work. That’s true for society at large too. And the number of transgender people who identify themselves as having transitioned as transsexuals is a fraction of the transgender community. Why Gates, who according to my friends, is an excellent demographer, would announce

how many gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people there are, based solely on the number who self-identify as gay, or who have transitioned as transsexual, baffles me. In the same announcement, Gates says that 11 percent of the American population has same-sex attractions, and 8.2 percent of Americans have engaged in homosexual sex. But only 3.8 percent of us self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. For many years, I’ve suggested that 5 percent to 10 percent of the population is homosexual, and a larger percentage is bisexual. About 1.5 percent of the population is transgender. I think I’m closer to the truth than Gary Gates, but no one can prove either of us wrong. Nevertheless, I think what Gates did was a bit irresponsible. Gay and lesbian people are homosexual even if they don’t self-identify. What Gates has actually given us is a number to gauge cultural acceptance of homosexuality. Sixty years from now, I suggest the numbers of self-identified gay, lesbian, and bisexual people will be much higher, maybe closer to his 11 percent who now claim same-sex attraction. What disturbed me as much about Gates findings was his explanation of his findings. He wrote a piece in The Washington Post that said, “Back in the 1960s, pioneering gay activists found an obscure passage from a 1948

book written by prominent sex researcher Alfred Kinsey that read, ‘10 percent of the males are more or less exclusively homosexual . . . for at least three years between the ages of 16 and 55.’ They used that quote to claim that 10 percent of the population was gay, even though Kinsey’s study was not designed to make a population-based estimate. Gates blames gay people for creating the 10 percent figure, as if it was a plot by homosexuals to deliberately deceive heterosexual Americans. But, he wasn’t there, he’s not a historian, and he’s not a sexologist. He’s a self-identified gay demographer who’s besmirching the intentions of other

gay people perhaps to make a case for his own credibility. As one of those gay educators from the early 1970s, I learned the 10 percent figure from heterosexual, certified sexuality educators, not gay activists. It’s a figure that appears in sexuality textbooks. When I was certified as a sexuality educator, it was a statistic used by the professionals who taught me the course. I wish Gates had stuck to what he knows, which is statistics, and not attempted to build his case by telling us that other gay people manipulated data to suit their own political needs. It’s offensive and inaccurate. There are three components to my homo-

sexuality. The first is my sexual orientation, which is my innate feeling of attraction. Gates says that 11 percent of the population acknowledges these feelings. I know of a rich, white CEO who is married with children, who would not acknowledge he makes regular trips to a gay bar out of state if you pulled out his teeth one at a time. He’d be disinherited. So, I don’t trust the 11 percent figure. It’s way too low. The second component of my homosexuality is my sexual behavior. This is what I do sexually, how often, and with whom. Gates says 8.2 percent of Americans acknowledge same-sex behaviors. Given the incredible prejudice against homosexuality in the black, Latino, Asian, Indian, Mormon, and Muslim communities, and among religious fundamentalists, I think more people have had gay sex than feel comfortable telling us. The third component of my homosexuality is my identity. This is what I tell myself and others about my sexuality. It’s called “coming out when you tell the truth. Gates says that only 3.6 percent of us are telling the truth. That doesn’t surprise me at all, but again, stick around. We’ll all see that number grow in our lifetimes. Telling the world that only 3.8 percent of Americans are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender seems unsophisticated to me. I wish Gary Gates had said instead, “I’m a scientist. Given our research, at this time in history, 3.6 percent of Americans selfidentify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, 8.2 say they have had homosexual sex, and 11 percent tell us they have same-sex feelings. Additionally, 0.2 percent of the populations have transitioned as transsexuals. I will let others interpret these statistics, with the caution that it is difficult to fully trust the accuracy of the data in a culture that does not value same-sex attraction.

f you haven’t heard of Fred Karger, you have an awful lot of company. Karger is a retired political consultant from California. He’s also a gay activist, and he’s running for the presidency. As a Republican. Clearly this is a fellow who fancies adventure. Does he stand more than a Popsicle’s chance in hell?Yes, actually. Karger, the first openly gay Republican presidential candidate, could win his party’s nomination under certain circumstances. Every other candidate has to drop out. It could happen. The acknowledged candidates, the possible candidates, and the waiting-till-later-to-make-a-grand-entrance candidates could all find themselves out of the campaign for one reason or another. Newt Gingrich, for instance, who converted to Catholicism in 2009, might decide he’d rather run for pope. Don’t scoff. As a serial adulterer who trumpeted family values, he’s got a leg up on finessing hypocrisy, which comes in handy in Rome from time to time. One of the Republican frontrunners, Mitt Romney, could similarly decide he’d prefer to head up his Mormon church. But I think it more likely he’ll leave the presidential field after he and Texas Gov. Rick Perry get in a shouting match over who has better hair. Tea partiers already harbor reservations about former mega-lobbyist and Washington power broker Haley Barbour, currently the governor of Mississippi. In February Barbour flew to Washington in a luxury jet paid for by Mississippi taxpayers to deliver a speech on the need to cut costs. When he takes that jet to a Tea Party rally, he’ll be pelted with Lipton and lose all fondness for caffeinated tea, and all fondness for caffeinated campaigning. Jeb Bush has denied he’ll run in 2012. I think he will run, and then inexplicably start speaking like his brother. After saying in a de-

bate something like, “I believe the American people are embettered for our alien rights, and other nations should immolate us, he’ll check into a speech facility. Sarah Palin could meet a wolf that shoots back. Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, is described as nice and oh-so bland. Hence it isn’t hard for me to imagine him disappearing from the race. He might still be in it, but we just won’t be able to see him. In March Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana proposed Republicans call a truce on social issues. Daniels holds socially conservative views, but believes the budget is too pressing to get sidetracked. Speaking of tracks, social conservatives will see that he gets tied to them. Lately Mike Huckabee has been feuding with fellow Fox host Glenn Beck. This prompts me to picture a campaign-busting scenario where Huckabee tells a reporter, “I still don’t believe in evolution, but I’m convinced Glenn Beck was sired by monkeys. Jon Huntsman has resigned his position as President Obama’s ambassador to China. The fact that he worked for Obama means GOP primary voters would sooner choose Pee Wee Herman. Donald Trump’s nomination-flirtation will end when it’s uncovered that he was born in Haiti. Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, John Thune, Rudy Giuliani, John Bolton—for a variety of reasons, they all could drop out or be booted out of the Republican campaign. Fred Karger might be the last man standing, in which case the nomination will be his. The Republican forces will be led into battle by an openly gay man who five years ago campaigned to save the Boom Boom Room, a historic gay club in Laguna Beach. Diehard Republicans won’t find this part of his resume inspiring. But if he’s all they have, they’ll learn to live with it.

While Ben Bullard formed the Sunshine Republicans two years ago after becoming dissatisfied with the local chapter of the LCR. The two organizations quickly formed an unofficial partnership. “We left the Log Cabin Republicans club two years ago because of the lack of activity, Bullard said. “We wanted to have an active club, be out in the community and actually have a pulse in Broward, MiamiDade and Palm Beach County. And active they have been. Since forming, the Sunshine Republicans have already raised more than $70,000 to support local and state-wide candidates such as Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca, Gov. Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater. So far they have 47 members and Bullard said

The South Florida chapter becomes the first chartered GOProud club in Florida and only the second in the nation. There’s also one in Nevada. GOProud made national headlines last year when they held their first “Homoconâ€? in New York City and invited conservative pundit Ann Coulter to be the guest speaker, naming her the right wing Judy Garland. “We knew our folks love Ann Coulter and that’s why we invited her,â€? he said. “During her speech she said gay people should be part of the conservative movement, that everyone is welcome in the conservative movement. That was an important moment.â€? LaSalvia said he’s going to start focusing on chartering new clubs across 4+91+$*)/$22"//'$()2#-*&*#%")1&26)/2+%% the nation. “There are gay conservatives all across every meeting their numbers grow. In March the Sunshine Republicans and the country that are hungry to get involved GOProud cemented their relationship. The in an organization and have a voice in Sunshine Republicans are now an official Washington,â€? LaSalvia said. “There are lots of gay organizations here in Washington chartered club of GOProud. “We’re excited to have a presence in South that work on a traditional gay agenda ‌ Florida,â€? LaSalvia said. “There are so many that agenda has been defined by the left,â€? That agenda he’s referring to includes enactgay conservatives out there and the truth is, ing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, Florida is an important state nationally.â€?

anti-bullying bills and hate crime legislation. “Many of those things are perfectly fine. Some of those I’m not a big fan of, he said. “But I certainly know there are lots of organizations working on those things. When forming GOProud LaSalvia wanted to make sure his organization didn’t just focus on the “gay agenda but instead also focused on a whole range of other issues that affect gay Americans. “We are a conservative group that happens to be gay. We represent gay conservatives on every single issue. What affects all Americans also affects gay people. Healthcare, taxes, and the budget, he explained. “Twenty-eight percent of gay voters voted for John McCain and Sarah Palin, according to CNN. Chances are they weren’t basing their vote on his position on hate crimes. I know that conservative policies are better for all Americans, including gay Americans. As for some of the hot button issues such as gay marriage and the Defense of Marriage Act his group believes that marriage should be left up to the states and that DOMA should be repealed. “Marriage is a state issue and the federal government should stay out of it, he explained. The Sunshine Republicans-GOProud meets the third Monday of the month at the Fort Lauderdale City Hall, 100 North Andrews. harun Ravi, 19, was indicted on 15 counts, which many believe caused Tyler Clementi to take his own life by jumping off of the George Washington Bridge in Sept. of last year. Bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and deleting electronic postings, such as texts and tweets implicating his involvement, count among charges against the former Rutgers freshman. However, charges do not link his actions directly to the suicide. Initally Ravi was implicated in invasion of privacy, along with Molly Wei, another student at Rutgers. Allegedly Ravi targeted Clementi, who was studying the violin, because of his sexual orientation. Ravi went so far as to turn on the webcam in the dorm room he shared with Clementi from Wei’s computer at another location. Prosecutors believe Ravi attempted the

The suicide of Clementi, who had already come out to his parents, sparked national attention about the bullying of gay youth – or youth who appear to be gay, and the sad cases of suicide as a way out of the harassment. New Jersey expanded anti-bullying laws soon after the incident. Gay rights activists in New Jersey are pleased that charges have been brought against Ravi. “The grand jury indictment spells out cold and calculated acts against our son, Tyler, by his former college roommate, Clementi’s parents said in a statement. “If these facts are true, as they appear to be, then it is important for our criminal justice system to establish clear accountability under the law. Ravi, if convicted on the most serious charges against him, could fact up to 10 years in prison. SFGN will continue to follow this story in the coming months.

s Officer Michael Carney more Irish than he is gay? There was strong evidence of both while he shared his story with me on Saint Patrick’s Day in Wilton Manors over a strong brew, a strong brew at Starbuck’s. Carney’s parents were Irish immigrants. He grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts in an Irish neighborhood named “Hungry Hill where the Catholic Church owned his soul but not his imagination. He chose Patrick as his Confirmation name, not to honor his heritage, but to honor his lust for the man by that name who lived next door. “When I teach recruits at the police academy, they always ask when I knew I was gay, he said. “I tell them that when all my friends were watching Marcia on the Brady Bunch sprout boobs, I was looking at Greg’s ass. I guess I had a clue. He may have had a clue, but many years would pass before Mike Carney would solve the case. In high school, Carney played hockey and hung out with the jocks. They drank heavily, but he had no trouble keeping up with them. “It was a great way to hide. With a beer in each hand, you couldn’t throw your arms around a girl, he said. After high school, when all his friends took the civil service exam to join the police department, he tagged along. Unlike his friends, he passed that test and became a police cadet. That meant working at the station while earning an Associate of Arts degree and thereby gaining an advantage over

other officer candidates. In 1982, he became a police officer and was assigned to the most violent and poorest section of Springfield. “At that time I wasn’t even out to myself. I was comfortable only when I was extremely intoxicated. I wasn’t getting laid at all. Only once, when I was drunk and cruising Springfield’s gay ‘loop’ in my El Camino, I hooked up with a guy in a Pontiac Lemans. He gave me his number. It took me a year and a half to get drunk enough to call him and his mother answered and said he moved to New York to be a model, he explained. “One night I’m at this cop bar on Chestnut Street and the corrections officer on the stool next to me is rubbing his leg against mine. We drank till we closed the place and got into my car and fogged up the windows. Then I hear two cops knocking on the door telling us to get out of the car. I knew both of them, and one says ‘We’re not gonna tell anyone about this because someday we might need a favor, and besides, if we told anyone at the station, they’d kill you.’ Nobody on the force was out, and after that I wasn’t going to ever come out. Carney hid his fears by getting drunk every night with his fellow officers. He paid for his double life with severe headaches, constant hangovers and violent illnesses. In 1984 during an internal drug investigation, Carney refused to talk about a party he had attended with fellow officers. For this he was suspended and removed from the force. He filed an appeal and four years later the Massachusetts Supreme Court overturned his termination on the grounds

that an internal and criminal investigation cannot be conducted concurrently. That decision is still referred to as “Carney’s rights. Disgusted with police work, he resigned from the force after reinstatement. “I took all the money I got in the settlement and partied hard. I flew down to Fort Lauderdale with a bunch of straight friends, checked into the Yankee Clipper and drank like never before until one night I had a complete breakdown, he said. “The next day I did what every drunk does. I got drunk again. I could not come to terms with being gay. At home, I started working in our family real estate consulting business where I was always late or leaving early until my sister told me I had a choice: get help or get fired. Carney chose recovery. “I started going to meetings and the fog started to lift. In my first year of sobriety I started going to gay meetings in Hartford. In July of 1991, he came out of the closet and decided to return to the police force, having met Officer Preston Horton with whom he started the local chapter of GOAL, the Gay Officers Action League.

During his reapplication process, Carney was victimized by a crooked police informant who knew he was gay. He was cleared of drug trafficking accusations, but his request for reinstatement was repeatedly denied. He filed the first sexual orientation discrimination case against a law enforcement agency in Massachusetts and after two and a half years got his job back. Since 1994, Carney has been sober, out, single, promoted, served on the Governor’s hate crimes task force and seen his GOAL chapter grow from 7 members to more than 300. With a strong network of support that includes friends in Florida, he is rediscovering Fort Lauderdale through clear eyes and is in the process of purchasing a home here. In the course of our talk at Starbuck’s, I did not tell him that he and I had met at a bar in Springfield many years ago. For obvious reasons, he would not remember that night. I was curious to meet the man he has become, and now that I have, I look forward to having this healthy and hot cop as a neighbor.

regnancy is tough enough when one person in a couple is carrying a child. When both are, though— a uniquely lesbian possibility—life can get especially complicated. Sarah Kate Ellis and Kristen Henderson’s new memoir of simultaneous pregnancies, Times Two: Two Women in Love and the Happy Family They Made, is a welcome addition to the small genre of LGBT parenting chronicles—although some might consider the tale of double the hormones, mood swings, and post-partum exhaustion to be more of a cautionary tale. Ellis is a marketing executive in New York City. Henderson is a founding member of the all-female rock band Antigone Rising. In alternating chapters, they tell their intertwining tale of coming out, falling in love, and starting a family. They did not intend to coordinate pregnancies. When Ellis had fertility problems, Henderson decided also to start trying to conceive. Much to their surprise, they both become pregnant within three days of each other. Along the way to parenthood, they discover their resiliency as a couple as they bond over the side effects of pregnancy— heartburn, hemorrhoids, and swollen ankles—and agree to disagree over issues such as whether to know the genders of their children and whether to try natural childbirth. Ellis and Henderson are not the first lesbian couple to be pregnant together—celebrity chef Cat Cora and her spouse Jennifer Cora are perhaps the most famous example,

having had their third and fourth children about three months apart in 2009. And Discovery Health’s 2008 television special “Quads with Two Momsâ€? profiled a lesbian couple who each gave birth to twins within a day of each other. Such examples are rarities, however, even among a community known for “alternativeâ€? approaches to family creation. What stands out about Ellis and Henderson’s tale, however, is not the oddity of their dual pregnancies, but the normality of their lives. They register at Babies “Râ€? Us. They each have supportive—though occasionally interfering—parents and extended families. Ellis’ jobs at Real Simple and Vogue magazines place her firmly among the hordes of urban yuppies. (Whether that’s “normalâ€? may be debatable, but it’s certainly mainstream.) Henderson’s band may have toured with the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and Joan Jett, but she is far from living a stereotypical, glamorous “rock starâ€? life. And Ellis craves ice cream and pickles, perhaps the biggest pregnancy clichĂŠ of all. As with all books about parenting, not every reader will agree with every choice the two make. I cringed a little at Ellis’ outrage that if they didn’t find out the genders of both babies in advance, one child would get “gender-appropriate giftsâ€? but the other would receive gender-neutral baby gear in green and yellow, as if that was a bad thing. But even though I dislike the automatic pink/blue separation of children based on

biological gender, I find it useful to be reminded that even lesbians are bound to have a diversity of opinion on this as well as other matters. Sometimes even the nontraditional can be traditional. Speaking of diversity, however: In reading Times Two, it struck me that I can think of no full-length memoir, novel, or movie about lesbian parenthood that was not about white, middle-class lesbians—and I say that as one myself. And while we need stories of all types of lesbian moms—even white, middle-class lesbian moms have varied and important tales to tell—I’d like to see greater racial and socioeconomic diversity. The fact is, almost four times as many lesbian couples raising children (and two-anda-half times as many gay male ones) receive public assistance, compared to opposite-sex married ones, according to Gary Gates of the Williams Institute at UCLA, using data from

Census 2010. Black or Latino same-sex couples are twice as likely as white ones to be raising children, and more likely to face economic hardships. And Census data doesn’t even let us count single lesbian or gay parents. So why don’t we hear the stories of non-white, non-middle class lesbian moms or other LGBT parents? Many live in states without laws protecting LGBT people against employment or housing discrimination, places that layer bias against LGBT people on top of a history of racial prejudice. If we have yet to hear their voices, we cannot blame them for keeping silent to protect their families, or for spending time earning a living rather than writing books. And, simply put, mainstream media still favors white over any other color. Yet these families do appear if we look hard, in the few LGBT parenting anthologies and the occasional newspaper article. Publishers should seek out the best of these stories for full-length treatment. Novelists and screenwriters should mine them for nuggets that could be incorporated into fiction. That is not a criticism of Ellis and Henderson. They have a unique story that should be told, and they do it with a warmth and honesty that shows on every page. It is just that at the end of the book, when they watch The Kids Are All Right—the hit movie about (white, middle class) lesbian moms, and comment that lesbian moms are now “totally mainstream, I can’t help thinking that it’s only true for a certain segment of us. Some of us may be mainstream, but others are still hidden in the shallows. Dana Rudolph is the founder and publisher of Mombian (www.mombian.com) a blog and resource directory for LGBT parents.
