More than $100,000 pledged to new local charity By A. Sebastian Fortino

O

ur Fund hosted an opening reception on April 20. Over 100 guests attended to support an organization, which seeks to assist the many groups supporting the LGBT-community. South Florida boasts one of the most diverse of these communities in the nation. However, with the very size of this population come multiple organizations, each wishing to serve the community. To whom then do potential donors endow with financial gifts? Chuck Loring, Chairman of Our Fund and known locally as a consultant to the non-profit sector spoke first. He chairs the board

with other notable names in the community, such as Coleman Prewitt, Richard Schwarz, Mark Budwig, and Phillip Dearborn who each bring unique talents and experiences to guide the organization. “I have been growling for many years when I read the Chronicle of Philanthropy and some rich gay person left $10 million to Harvard. Makes me crazy,” Loring said emphatically. “Harvard has $28 billion in the bank, $10 million to Harvard means nothing.” However, such a donation to an LGBT organization, “would be transformative.” The reason funds go to places like Harvard is simple. People want their donations to be managed effectively, by or-

ganizations with known sustainability. Our Fund wishes to make every organization a Harvard by building their visibility. So far, it seems as if the mission of Our Fund is being met with positive reactions, from both the public and nonprofit community. Northern Trust, for instance, has pledged $5,000 per year for the next three years. Total financial pledges thus far to the organization are just over $100,000 per year for the next three years. Anthony Timiraos, CEO and President of Our Fund, Inc. outlined the three part structure by which the organization seeks to be “a foundation connecting the LGBT community.” Our Fund will promote a culture of philanthropy with donors, to unite them, ensure their charitable interests are provided for and an impact is made from donations. They will bring together the non-profit organizations serving the LGBT-community, and unite the donors and the non-profit organizations. “Introducing donors to some of the most significant needs of our community is really going to be our number one priority. We need to be accountable to all the donors as to what’s happening here,” said Timiraos. Through their initiatives they will bring together LGBT-supportive non-profits, creating a cohesive force able to address needs and challenges without duplication. The money in effect, will channel assets rather than over-funding certain groups while others seek aid. Please visit Our-Fund.org to learn how you can become a partner in the community.

SFGN BRIEFS

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners directed county staff to update the County’s Merit System Rules and Regulations to allow County employees with domestic partners to take the same family and medical leave granted to married employees under federal law. County Commissioner Paulette Burdick, a longtime proponent of equal rights for the county’s LGBT-community, proposed the change in response to a request by the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. The Council has been the leading advocate in Florida for domestic partnership since 1992, when the City of West Palm Beach became the state’s first public employer to provide basic domestic partnership benefits. The existing county regulations are based on the federal Family and Medical Leave Act which allows married employees to take up to 12 weeks unpaid, job-protected leave to care for ill spouses. “When it comes to so many aspects of the

John Castelli Has an Appetite for Success By Tony Adams

H

ow did John Castelli, a boy from Winnetka, become one of South Florida’s most trusted and respected real estate brokers? Castelli says Winnetka had a lot to do with it. Surrounded by successful neighbors, he seemed to absorb their confidence and the premise of accomplishment. Soon after college at Marquette and Northwestern, the entrepreneur in him bloomed and grew a bit too swiftly. “With a couple of buddies, I started a film studio that produced TV commercials. We rented space in a brownstone. The sign over the door read ‘Fire Escape’ so we called our business ‘Fire Escape Studio.’ That business became too successful too rapidly. I was just a kid. I didn’t want to

be that much of a grown-up success just yet. So I took off for Fort Lauderdale where my parents and grandparents had places. A friend of mine, Jim Eilers, had this business called the Marlin Beach Hotel. He asked me if I could do something to improve the bar operation. I told him that I didn’t know the difference between Scotch and Bourbon but I’d give it a shot. So I painted the whole place pink, advertised in After Dark, started a Tea Dance and relocated the gay beach to across the street. My domestic partner at the time, Bill Bastiansen, who has since passed away, figured that if we could do all that for the Marlin, why shouldn’t we do it for ourselves. We opened up a dance palace called the Copa in 1974 and ran it through 1995. It was such a success that we opened up Copas in Orlando, Key West and Fire Island.” Castelli’s disdain for relying on others for what he could do himself led to his career in real estate. With a house in Fire Island Pines and with a few nightclubs to sell, he calculated the commissions and, startled by the amount, obtained a real estate license largely to buy and sell properties. Castelli admits that his interest in real estate is rooted in his ignorance about the stock market. In 1999, he formed a business partnership over Martinis with Jason Johnson who had also recently gotten his license. The two men first worked for ARVIDA, and then for REMAX before starting their own brokerage, Castelli Real Estate Services, in 2004. (Castelli’s life partner of 16 years is Stephen Harris.) Their first office was on Federal Highway in the Victoria Park area. They now have offices in Wilton Manors, Aventura, Hallandale, as well as on the Galt Ocean Mile and Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Castelli has an immediate answer when asked how his business grew so well despite the worst market since the Great Depression.

“Our philosophy and our business model are key. In real estate there are many personalities involved. It’s not like selling a pair of shoes at Saks where it’s either a size 9 or not. We create an umbrella of care around our agents. We try to provide what they need. Even if one of them forgets to have a check ready for a closing scheduled in 30 minutes, I can deliver that check to cover them.” “We ask each of our agents to submit a personal business plan. This means that our 80 experienced agents are serious about their work. Also, we have invested heavily in technology. Through our website, our agents have exceptional market access, mapping capacity and demographic information. We can track what our agents do with leads, messages and outreach. We syndicate our listings to 300 websites. We lean heavily on technology because 60 percent of first-time buyers are under 34-years-old. 71 percent of agents are over 45. My job is to make sure they understand the market and have all the right tools.” Castelli is a director of the Florida Association of Realtors, and a director of the Realtor Association of Greater Fort Lauderdale where he is the liaison to the Grievance Committee (Johnson is currently on that committee.) He produced a copy of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the National Association of Realtors. He is well aware that the

market can be cut throat and that some agents commit violations against clients and other realtors. The Grievance Committee does not police agents, but will consider evidence when there is a complaint, and will sometimes send the situation to the Professional Standards committee for a determination. He joked about how his position in the ethics review process helps keep his brokerage squeaky clean lest they be mortified by breaking the rules they claim to uphold. Castelli’s reputation among agents is unusually strong among his competitors. The highly regarded Ligia Jamieson with Century 21 Hansen Realty says “I have been fortunate to work with John on several deals. He is very well informed and a pleasure to work with.” Castelli describes himself as “that crazy guy who can’t wait for Monday.” He calls his years running the Copa as “the 20 craziest years of my life that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’m glad I always had the ability to reinvent myself. You know, for the longest time, I thought I had a serious personality flaw because, no matter what the field, I always said ‘Oh I can do that.’” Castelli can also predict the future, tipping us to the fact that the South Florida market is improving. With inventory low and prices rising, he suggests with a sly smile that this may be a good time to buy. Visit CastelliHomes.com for more information.

A Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Advice

Just Shut Up! You are Right to Remain Silent By Norm Kent

A

fter 35 years of practicing law in the trenches of state and federal courts, I have narrowed my advice for all my clients down to one, simple, direct sentence: “Shut Up.” No kidding. Really. Just shut up. Living in Florida, I have come to love deep-sea fishing. Enter my law office, and on my walls, above my desk, staring and glaring at my clients, is a stuffed, six-foot steel blue Marlin. Below the fish is a plaque that reads: “Behold the beautiful, majestic Marlin. He would not be here if he had not opened his mouth.” When you are a 7-year-old kid growing up, and your mom catches you with your hand in the cookie jar, you inevitably and sheepishly try to come with an excuse. Mom pushes and prods you to confess, and you do. She then hugs and kisses you, and you make up as she tells you everything is going to be all right. It does not work that way with a cop when he pulls you over. The police are not your parents. The sheepish lie you first tell him becomes a prior inconsistent statement that is going to be used in a court of law against you. The cop does not hug you, kiss you, and make up. He searches you, arrests you, and locks you up. So what you should do is just shut up. Do not bargain with cops, negotiate with cops, or promise deals you cannot deliver on. The promises they make on the street are not binding in the courts where prosecutors charge you. Deal with the reality that if you are caught with drugs you are now the prisoner of a drug war. In war, you are only required as a prisoner to give your name, rank, and dog tag number. Do not give consent to search your car, your per-

son, or invite cops back to your home. As my friend William Panzer says, an Oakland, California based criminal defense attorney, also on the NORML Board of Directors, “If everyone kept their mouth shut, half the people in jail would not be there. The cop’s job is to put you in a cage and anything you say beyond identifying yourself helps them put you there.” His advice too: “Shut up.” My advice is that if you are carrying drugs, prepare yourself for jail. Don’t carry lots of cash that will be forfeited to the State. Instead, keep dog bones in your car. This way, when police tell you they are going to keep you sitting in handcuffs by the side of the road- in the hot sun or cold wind- while they retrieve a canine to search your vehicle, you can offer the dog some treats when he arrives. In the meantime, shut your mouth up. This is not the time to bemoan your fate in front of the officer and reflect that you were only ‘doing a favor for a friend.’ The cop will not give you a bone. He will transcribe your confession. I would be a liar if I told you that ‘shut your mouth up’ works in every single instance. If you are carrying a loose joint in a ‘decrim’ state and you own up to a cop, he may let you go with a reprimand. But let’s face it; if you are carrying felony weight cannabis, a couple of beans, or some crystal, you are headed to jail. The U.S. Constitution does not say your job is to make the police and prosecution’s job easier by telling them how and where you got it. The Constitution says your right is to remain silent. Use it; don’t lose it. Just Shut Up. You may think you are already guilty. Far from it; you are not. If the state cannot

prove it, it is not a crime. It is their job to prove the case above and beyond a reasonable doubt. It is not your job to tell them all the contraband is yours so their job becomes a snap while they snap handcuffs on you. So just shut up. Show police your driver’s license, insurance card, and registration. Show them your McDonald’s discount Big Mac card if you must. But do not be a dope and show them your dope. Abraham Lincoln once wrote that many men are foolish but that some “speak and remove all doubt.” Be one of those that leave arresting officers with doubt. You might get rewards for confessing in a church. You do not in a courtroom or on the street to a cop. Just shut up. The most recent and recurrent law enforcement technique being employed presently is the notorious ‘knock and talk’ on your front doorstep at your home. They are ‘trick or treating’ for an admission. Armed with anonymous and non-verifiable information that you are cultivating marijuana on your premises, cops ‘drop by’ for a chat, seeking your permission for a search. They like to make it seem they are coming over for coffee, investigating a zoning violation, or looking for a lost cat. They are not. They are looking for you to let a cat out of the bag that you are growing at home. Think of it this way: if they had enough information to believe you were doing something illegal, they would not be there asking for permission. They would have already secured a warrant and smashed in your door. In these situations, the officers have no valid basis to even be on your property, let

Like vampires, cops can only come in when invited. If they had a warrant, they would not have to knock.

alone a warrant to enter. You have no legal obligation to answer their questions. You most certainly do not have to invite them in. They tell you though they ‘know’ pot is there and it will go ‘so much easier on you’ if you cash in your stash. No, it won’t. You will go to jail when you did not have to. You will have foolishly waived a right you never should have given up. So just shut up, and show them the door. Like vampires, cops can only come in when invited. If they had a warrant, they would not have to knock. There will be times when talking to a cop makes sense. Let your attorney make that decision with you: that you can tell the police. For too many years, I have watched young men and women get arrested while feeling some sort of moral obligation to simultaneously say to cops: “You got me!” I think it goes back to mom and the cookie jar. But guess what? You are not Dorothy, and we are not in Kansas anymore. What you do not say cannot be used against you in a court of law. What you do not say may prevent you from being there in the first place. Norman Elliott Kent, SFGN’s publisher, has been an attorney in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and on the NORML board of directors. Fearing No One Will Love You

I

By Karl Hampe

THE REGULARS

magine that almost everyone in the world is a gay man or lesbian, or says they are. You unfortunately are not. You were born into a gay family. Your parents are two women, or two men, who love you very much, and are very proud of you. You love them too, and want them to be proud of you. These are the people who taught you to walk and to talk, to read, and to draw. When you were very sick, they stayed up overnight in your bedroom. They walked you to your first day of school when you were young. You have an older brother and an older sister who, in their early teens, both identified themselves as gay. Your older brother has a boyfriend with whom he holds hands on the street. Your sister has kissed her girlfriend in front of you. Your parents, and your brother and sister, assume and want you to be gay. If you want them to stay proud of you, you need to bring home a same-sex love interest. How do you feel about that, and who do you tell how you feel? At fourteen, you’re heading to your first day of high school, listening to gay rap on your iPhone, walking with your best friend who is flirting with other gay teens. The school’s faculty is all gay except for one guy who coaches the girl’s field hockey team. There’s talk too about the sophomore history teacher who never has a date at school social functions. There’s also a straight-gay alliance for the handful of straight kids who either have come out or pretend to be gay

allies. You stay clear of the field hockey coach, the sophomore history teacher, and the straight-gay alliance. You have questions, but the risk of exposure is too high. Heterosexuals are tolerated, but not accepted. They’re on television in small supporting roles, but they rarely kiss, and they never have love scenes. There are “breeder” web sites, YouTube videos, and chat rooms, but you’re worried that if you go to them you’ll be identified and caught. What if gay people hang out in chat rooms waiting to catch someone they know who’s straight? You’ve seen what happens to kids suspected of being a breeder. You’ve heard about the nasty messages left on Facebook pages. Some such bullying has even resulted in suicides by straight teens. You’ve always been a good kid, polite, generous, and even religious. But the messages you get from lots of people – politicians, ministers, school board members, radio hosts, and bloggers – is that if you’re straight, deal with it, but don’t push it in people’s faces. How do you feel about that, and who do you tell how you feel? To hide from bullies, and to keep the love of your family, you date a same-sex classmate. You hold their hand in public. You kiss them in front of your friends. You tell them you love them. You do actually like them. They just don’t turn you on. You want to kiss someone of the other sex. You fantasize about having sex with them. But you

can’t tell anyone that, can you? You know there are others like you out there. There are straight adults who live together, have kids of their own, and call themselves a “family.” There are straight politicians who run for office, and sometimes win if there are lots of straight voters. There are straight movie and TV stars, and even a couple of church leaders, but the gay people who hate straight people seem to outnumber the gay people who like them. Straight people aren’t wanted in some neighborhoods and in some churches. There’s one gay minister who brings his family to straight

funerals and pickets with signs that say, “God Hates Breeders,” and “Breeders Burn in Hell.” Being straight makes you feel dirty, strange, and not-normal. People tell you to get therapy, pray to God, seek help converting to gay. How could your family ever love who you are? You stay sane by risking exposure and joining a straight chat room. You look for YouTube videos that make you feel better about yourself. You go to a college far away from home. You find out about a popular straight bar and after several tries, you finally get up the nerve to go in. You meet all kinds of straight

people. Some you like. Some you don’t. But they’re your new family, and you feel at home. You meet some other kids from school there, join the Straight Pride Club, and come out to your gay roommate. They move out, and you have a dorm room to yourself. Other students are now told you’re straight, and they start looking at your differently, but you learn to deal with it. One way, is to push back with “Straight Pride” T-shirts, posters, and buttons. You finally connect online with someone local. After a week of messages, you meet and hit it off. You’re so excited about the connection that you want to tell everyone how happy you are. You feel whole. You feel completion when you kiss and make love. You feel normal. But can you tell your family, and how will they react? You graduate and get a job. You and your new mate decide to keep your secret until you’re sure you’ll be safe at work and in your home. You get a two bedroom apartment and tell your folks that you’re just sharing rent. You don’t put the picture of the person you love on your desk at work. You don’t bring them home for Thanksgiving. They’re “just a friend” who has their own family. So, everyone at home and at work thinks you’re single and need their help finding a gay date. One day, while you’re at work, the person you most love in the world, is in an accident and taken to the hospital. You learn this when a stranger answers your mate’s cell phone. You rush to the hospital to be at their side, but hospital policy prohibits non-family members from access to the Intensive Care Unit. What do you do? Do you tell the gay doctors and nurses that you’re straight and the person they’re taking care of is your lover, or do you sit outside and wait? How do you feel? Who do you call? Why are you so upset?

Mombian Same-Sex Weddings Inspire Pioneering Author’s New Picture Book By Dana Rudolph

M

ore than 20 years after she wrote Heather Has Two Mommies, the first picture book for and about children with lesbian parents, Lesléa Newman is still turning out must-reads for lesbian families. Her latest work, Donovan’s Big Day, is a delightful story about a boy preparing for the wedding of his two moms. Newman, who has over 60 books for children, young adults, and adults to her name, along with numerous literary awards, said she wrote Donovan to be “pure, joyful celebration,” a “gift that I wanted to give our community.” She got the idea for Donovan in the shower, where she was reflecting that many books featuring gay parents are also centered around some kind of “issue.” As an example, she points to Heather itself, which focused on a girl trying to understand why

she doesn’t have a dad. She left “issues” out of Donovan entirely. The young boy has only the problems any child might face while attending a wedding of any sort. He has to dress up, keep clean, and not fidget. Most of all, he has to make sure to hand his moms their rings at the proper moment. There is just enough light tension to keep young readers engaged as Donovan goes through each step of his preparations. Illustrator Mike Dutton’s dynamic gouache drawings capture Donovan’s earnest spirit with gentle humor. In creating the character, Newman said, “I just tried to remember what it was like to be a child and to see the day from the child’s perspective.” The book is also a celebration of wider family. Donovan stays with his grandparents

the night before the wedding. His aunt and to look at how far we’ve come,” Newman uncle drive him to the ceremony, and he says. “Something that at one point had to shares the back seat with his cousins. Book Review By A. Sebastian Fortino One Damn Tempting Read! A Billion Wicked Thoughts By Ogi Ogas & Sai Gaddam Dutton Publishers Penguin.com ABillionWickedThoughts.com 394 pages, $29.95

I

n the mid-twentieth century Dr. Alfred Kinsey interviewed 18,000 Caucasian, middleclass Americans, to determine the sexual make-up of the country. Today, of course, we raise an eyebrow at the narrowness of his scope although he continues to be studied and used as a resource. However, the recent research of Dr. Ogi Ogas and, Dr. Sai Gaddam easily eclipses Kinsey. “Their ingenious method? They examined what people do on the Internet. They analyzed a billion web searches, a million websites, a million erotic videos, a million erotic stories, millions of personal ads, and tens of thousands of digitized romance novels,” states the book’s dust jacket. People can lie. As Kinsey conducted personal interviews surely some people were hiding or embellishing facts. Wicked Thoughts’ 394 pages are – astoundingly – loaded with nearly 130 pages of acknowledgments, notes, and index. The bibliography alone is 80 pages! The sheer number of pages citing reference makes perfect sense. Today, the internet is a porn powerhouse with 2.5 million such sites. In 1997 there were less than 1,000. Men primarily keep those numbers rising, as men are more visually turned on than women. Hence why the female audience of the romance novel is still a cash cow for many writers In terms of males preferring visual stimuli it’s not just a human preference. Male gos-

lings – baby geese – will gravitate towards the first creature he sees. If exposed to his mother he’ll gravitate sexually towards female geese. However, if he finds a female research assistant when he cracks his shell, he will be hopelessly attracted to human women. Interestingly, sexual drives and desires of lesbians are not a mirror image of heterosexual men – nor straight women. Instead bisexual women, in terms of searches and interest in pornography, are more akin to male desire. Ogas and Gadaam compare males to Elmer Fudd, as they are stimulated visually and pull the trigger. Women are compared to Miss Marple, Agatha Christie’s fictional detective because their desire is more linked to research. “It’s as if the carnal signs from a woman’s body somehow get cut off before they enter her conscious awareness. Male sexuality, in contrast, is like the kneejerk reflex: a message of arousal from the body triggers instant mental desire. Elmer Fudd readies, aims, fires at the slightest hint of a rabbit.” Interestingly, this means when gay men tell straight peers they’re just like them in terms of sexual appetite – if not stimuli – he’s not butching it up. Men are hardwired into what they find attractive. Indeed, the book reveals all males respond to the same visual cues, or “body map.” Chests, butts, feet, and penises of gay searches run parallel to straight searches – although breasts lead the list, and “vagina is also exceedingly popular.” Also interesting group sex, or orgies, are very popular searches among males. Yet, straight pornography tends to show many more males in such scenes. Therefore, it is the visual act of sex, the act of penetration, which arouses men. Hence, perhaps, why the mutual search for penises. Factually, and anecdotally, A Billion Wicked Thoughts is a fascinating portrait of sexuality across the international spectrum. revard County, also known as Space Coast, started to show their true colors in 2005 with the start of their first gay pride celebration. With the help of sponsors the event has continued to stay strong and grow. The Pride celebration is put together by the Living Room, the gay and lesbian center of Brevard County and every year they bring something new to the table. One of the most memorable moments in the event’s short history happened in 2008, when 24 couples on stage and in private held commitment ceremonies to show their stand against Amendment 2, which eventually banned gay marriage in Florida. Close to 1,300 people attended last year and they’re expecting a similar crowd this year. Lisa Moldovan will be back once again to host the celebration. Joining on stage this year will be co-hosts Denise and Donna from My Lesbian Radio. The entertainment lineup includes Kelli Randell, Velvet LeNore, Dominique Taylor, Shelita Taylor, Lovari, a song writer and award winning singer, and recording artist J. Fortino. Several local bands and comedians will also perform. When compared to other PrideFests around the state Space Coast Pride is rel-

This year they include, Florida Today, Project Response, Macy’s, Cold Keg Nightclub, Out on the Coast magazine, State Farm, The Ultra Lounge, Maxwell C. King Center and the Brevard Democrats. “I take pride in what I do. For me to be a part of my community and to help bring pride to the Space Coast is a achievement in my eyes,” said Michael Cox, President of The Living Room Of Brevard. “I most likely will be doing this for many years to come as well.” The event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 29 at Wickham Pavilion in Melbourne, 3865 Wickham Road North. Admission is $5. Proceeds from admission will benefit The Living Room. Visit SpaceCoastPride.org for more information.

Mangum Gallery Showcases Three Unique Artists By Matt Clark

Square Lamps by Kimka Hesalroad; Bottom Right: chandeliers by Mark Peyton; Top right: sculpture by Torche

angum Gallery is showcasing three unique artists, Kimka Hesalroad, Torche, and Mark Peyton. Each artist has exceptional stories and methods behind their work in glass, or metal. Hesalroad comes from a family of artists, whose parents are glass designers. At the age of eight, Hesalroad’s parents exhibited their craft at festivals and national art shows. Like her parents, Kimka has won many awards for her art. Hesalroad cuts, layers and fuses stained glass together to create exceptional mirror frames, lamps and jewelry. No two pieces are alike. They are each one-of-kind. Local artist Tiffany Perkins, known as Torche, is another exceptional artist who works in welding metals into beautiful, abstract sculptures. When metal is worn down over time, people often throw it out, but Torche takes discard-

ed metal back home with her from the junkyard and recycles them into beautiful and coveted forms. The process is mentally and physically exhausting for Torche as she takes the heavy metal and literally pours her emotion into the piece. Upon observing the finished pieces,Torche notes that they are abstract enough for the viewer to take their own interpretation and develop a personal connection to the piece. Mark Peyton specializes in creating chandeliers and door knobs from unique beach glass. Growing up in the 1960’s Peyton used his own hair to create paint brushes, protested the Vietnam War and made headlines in the paper for the heroic deed of rescuing a goat from slaughter. Later on, Peyton traveled to Peru and assisted the locals in harvesting potatoes before returning to Florida. Peyton began creating sculptures with gem like remains of beach glass, winning awards at festivals across the country. Mangum Gallery is located at 2301 Wilton Drive. Frank Crowley, Artist By Candice Russell

eighty themes inspire the paintings of Frank Crowley. The Fort Lauderdale artist currently has a solo show at the Café Gallery in Davie now through May 31. He has another exhibition opening next month at Matty’s on the Drive in Wilton Manors. Dealing with important subjects plucked from the news comes easily to Crowley, who never suffers from a lack of inspiration. “Oil Bride,” he explains, relates to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. “Contingency Plan” refers to the war in Iraq. But not all viewers of Crowley’s artwork get his message. “People aren’t looking at the paintings long enough,” he says. “I’d rather that they get the meaning.” Even his choice of palette is open to misinterpretation. “I have heard people say that, if I use bright colors, they feel happy,” the artist says. “I don’t necessarily see them that way.” Positive feedback has come since Crowley started adding words to his abstract paintings consequently generating more interest in them. He feels even better when fellow artists appreciate and understand his work. “I’m sort of getting more into it,” he says, referring to the pursuit of exhibitions and contests. “Having a solo show at a gallery would be wonderful. I don’t know if my paintings will be in museums some day.” Creating art in a room at home, Crowley has an easel, a table for mixing paints and “four nice windows.” While the space is appropriate for his needs, his production has spawned an impression, “The room keeps getting smaller and smaller. I have paintings against the wall. There is another table with paper piled up. I have works in paper under a pile, a bookcase with art materials, and paintings on the wall that I am working on. The closets are filled with art. If I had a wish, it would be for a big barn.” Crowley came to painting in his late teens. He studied art at Brooklyn College,

starting his art career in earnest after moving to Florida seven years ago. Participating in local shows such as “Starving Artists” at Gallery Six in Fort Lauderdale’s Main Library and joining ArtsUnited and ArtServe spurred him on. He plans to take a workshop at ArtServe called “The Artist as Entrepreneur.” A notebook filled with thoughts, ideas, and phrases is a wellspring of inspiration. “Usually I paint in oil only,” Crowley says of his process. “But I have trouble with oil drying in humid weather, so I use pencil, charcoal, collage and oil pastels. When I paint in oil, it comes out very different. My oil paintings are almost more emotional, more intuitive. My newer mixed media pieces are more intellectual. More thought and planning goes into them.” Has his style changed over the years? “Yes. When I was younger, it was more figurative. It has gotten more abstract and better. But there was one painting I did at the Brooklyn Museum with a live model that has stood the test of time,” says the artist. “Sometimes I think I have done this before and it jogs my memory. Did I? There is a progression in my work with collage elements.Years ago, I put words in my paintings, but then I would take them out. I had to be brave enough to leave them in.” To contact Crowley, email him at Crowleyfrank@comcast.net.

John Torrenga

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Joe Harter as Hedwig

By J.W. Arnold

“H

edwig and the Angry Inch” is not musical theater. It’s better described as performance art, a rock concert with a running monologue. The show, by John Cameron Mitchell with songs by Stephen Trask, which was made into a 2001 cult film, tells the story of Hedwig, an East German transsexual rocker who falls in love with an American soldier. In order to marry and escape the Communist east, he undergoes a botched sex change operation, leaving him with a dysfunctional one-inch mound of flesh (“the angry inch”). On their first anniversary in Junction City, Kan.—the day the Berlin Wall falls—her husband leaves her for another man, ultimately making the whole ordeal unnecessary. Distraught, she forms a band and begins writing songs for her soul mate “Tommy Gnosis,” who achieves stardom and leaves Hedwig behind to perform in dingy coffee shops and restaurants. The latest stop for Hedwig is Fort Lauderdale’s Empire Stage in a production by Infinite Abyss. Joe Harter (Hedwig) is joined in the tight space by bassist Blaze Powers (Yitzhak), drummer Jhovany Castillo (El Puto), keyboardist Roger Blankenship (Professor) and guitarist Jonathan Bellino (Jon). If ’90s glam rock is your thing,Trask’s songs will appeal, but don’t hesitate to pick up the complimentary earplugs at the box office window. The entire experience is sort of like

listening to a garage band jam—in a garage. Decibel levels aside, the score is tightly crafted and well performed under the musical direction of Harter. In fact, several mainstream artists, including Yoko Ono and Cyndi Lauper, have recorded covers from the score that includes “Wig in a Box,” “The Origin of Love,” “Tear Me Down” and “Midnight Radio.” Ultimately, the success of the production lands on the shoulders of Harter, who not only must deliver musically, but also dramatically. And he was up to the challenge, belting out song after song while nailing the raw emotions caught up in Hedwig’s story. Powers also shined as Hedwig’s new partner,Yitzhak, providing a steady bass line and lending her own voice to the back-ups. In a show already chock full of gender-bending symbolism, Powers scrubs her beard to reappear on stage in the end wearing Hedwig’s blonde wig and a slinky red dress, begging forgiveness from Hedwig, now in male form. The band on Empire Stage’s small floor leaves little room for Harter and Powers to maneuver, but with strong direction from Jeffrey Holmes, the production turns the liability into an opportunity for an intimate— albeit loud—theater experience.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch Infinite Abyss Productions Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr., Fort Lauderdale. Thurs. – Sat., 8 p.m. through June 4 Tickets $30 at Infinite-Abyss.com or at the door (cash only)

Shirtless Schock in Men’s Health From Advocate.com

Bob Gramatges, a Miami sales representative for SFGN, and occasional columnist for the paper, has taken a job as the new Editor of Genre Latino Magazine, and become part of the growing Hotspots magazine family. In the printing business with his family for his entire life, Gramatges is a talented writer who studied marketing at Florida International University. He writes with a unique style and flair. His many writings can be viewed on his personal blog, and twitter account @ thehomorational. Stated Gramatges, who has volunteered for the National Gay Task Force and worked on the Winter Party, “This is a wonderful opportunity for me as a gay Latino living in South Florida. I am looking forward to this new adventure. I’d rather be a product of my decisions than a byproduct of circumstance.”

Antigay conservative Rep. Aaron Schock, who once burned a belt blogs said made him look gay, appears shirtless on the cover of the new issue of Men’s Health, with the magazine dubbing him “America’s Fittest Congressman.” Schock, 29, a freshman congressman from Peoria, Ill., is teaming up with the magazine for the Fit for CNN’s Don Lemon Life summer challenge. Are protein supplements necessary? Q: I love your column. Great information! Can you talk a little about protein and how much we need to build muscle? Also, which type of protein supplement is better – whey or casein? A: First of all, protein doesn’t build muscle directly: strength training using heavy weights and resistance exercises are responsible for muscle growth. Consuming protein alone, in the absence of weight training, will not result in muscle growth. However, protein does play a vital role in the repair and recovery of muscle fibers that are broken down during muscle-building exercises. Proteins are made up of amino acids which our bodies need and use to build tissue and are a building block of bones, skin and blood – as well as muscles. When you engage

the scapular muscles in your upper back and the rotator cuff muscles of your shoulders and is a great exercise to build strong shoulders!

Paul Warner demonstrates the Cable Face Pull with External Rotation

in strenuous exercise, your muscle fibers become stressed and literally tear. Protein is needed in this process of repair and recovery, leading to bigger and thicker muscle fibers. The general recommendation for individuals who are exercising and keen to build muscle is to consume 1 gram of protein per pound of your desired body weight. So if you want to be 170 pounds, consume 170 grams of protein daily (1 gram of protein = 4 calories). Good sources of protein include chicken breast, fish (especially tuna), turkey, eggs, yogurt, cheese, milk. It is possible to get an adequate supply of protein by eating well-balanced meals. But in today’s fast-paced world

when many of us eat on the go, it’s a good idea -- and very convenient -- to use a protein supplement to make sure you are getting enough of this important nutrient your body needs. Drink a protein shake at least two hours before you work out and again within an hour of finishing your session. A biological value (BV) is assigned to the absorption rate of proteins we consume; the higher the BV, the better the absorbing rate. Whey protein is digested and absorbed by the bloodstream faster than other proteins, which is great for post-workout consumption so that your muscles get fed the nutrients they crave. Whey also has a BV of 104. By contrast, a whole egg has a BV of 100, a glass of milk, 91, and casein protein, which makes up about 80 percent of the protein found in milk, has a BV of 77. But both whey and casein protein are excellent sources of branch chain amino acids (BCAAs) and play important roles in repairing muscle. The major difference is the absorption rate.

TIP OF THE WEEK Bananas help ease depression

NETWORKING

This June... we’re changing the world!!!

Bananas have been called “the world’s perfect food” – and with good cause. First found in Malaysia and brought to the western world by Alexander the Great, this amazing fruit is rich in vitamin C, fiber, minerals and potassium. The body needs potassium, which is secreted in sweat and depleted by stress, to regulate blood pressure. Bananas are non-fattening and digested completely in just 45 minutes. A medium banana contains about 89 calories, comprising roughly 22 grams of carbs, 1.09 grams of protein, 2.6 grams of fiber and 12 grams of sugar (glucose). A little known fact is that bananas can help ease depression. They contain a protein called tryptophan which the body converts to serotonin. This chemical in known to enhance mood and a feeling of well-being.
