South Florida Gay News.com is published weekly on Wednesdays. Our paper is a member of the Associated Press. The views and opinions expressed within this publication, in bylined columns, stories, and letters to the editor are those of the writers expressing them. They do not represent the opinions of South Florida Gay News.com, Inc., or the Publisher. They are included to promote free speech and diversity of thought. You should not presume the sexual orientation of individuals based on their names or pictorial representations in SFGN, and it would be careless to do so. For the sake of readable newswriting, the word “gayâ€? in SFGN should, when relevant, be interpreted to be inclusive of the entire gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered community. All of the material that appears in SFGN, both online at www. southfloridagaynews.com, and in our print edition, including articles used in conjunction with our contract with the Associated Press and our columnists, is protected under federal copyright and intellectual property laws, and is jealously guarded by the newspaper. Thus, nothing published may be reprinted in whole or part without getting written consent from the Publisher of SFGN, at his law office, Kent & Cormican, P.A., 110 Southeast 6th Street, Suite 1970, Fort Lauderdale, Fl 33301. ilton Manor’s City Hall invited residents, event sponsors, and other concerned locals to discuss the upcoming pride celebration on the evening of May 17. The celebration for 2011 already promises to be quite different than previous years. For instance, StonewallWiltonManors.com is the official website, uniting city and event. Wedner and Friends, a “special events management and marketing” team has produced events since 1996. Ellen Wedner and colleagues are responsible for such events as the Miami Jewish Film Festival, Fire Island Pines International Film Festival, and events associated with Miami’s White Party Week. “This is a really nice city, our experience working here since February has been wonderful,” said the energetic Ellen Wedner, whose company has been commissioned to plan this and future events. By “nice city,” Wedner means cooperative businesses and residents. Change can be controversial. However, the ensuing discussion did not involve any shouting, which can arise at City Hall meetings – indicating passionate feelings towards “The Island City.”
Wedner and Friends’ plan is to partner as much as possible with the local community. The Stonewall National Museum and Archives, has not only lent its name but will create an exhibit highlighting gay life and personalities prior to the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Attendees will enter at 20th Street or Five Points – all side streets will be closed. All booths, vendors, and stages will be positioned on the west side of Wilton Drive, while the parade will commence on the east side. “The first thing locals asked us to do was make it cooler,” said Wedner of the June 19 event. This gives credence to large-scale unhappiness with last year’s hot event. By which SFGN means the high temperatures of a Floridian, June afternoon, coupled with asphalt. “So this year’s event will take place from 4 to 9, with the parade taking place at 6:30.” In addition to showing the community how mutually supportive they are of each other, partnerships with corporations Coca Cola, Wells Fargo, Google, Macy’s, and others will nationalize the event. HereMedia, will cover the event. Sirius XM Satellite Radio OUT Q Channel will also send three representatives. Previously, these organizations had not really heard of Wilton Manors. The Grand Marshal will be Thomas

Roberts, an award-winning journalist and MSNBC anchor. The mayor of West Hollywood – as in California – will also be on hand, further increasing national exposure. Eric Romero serves as the Advisory Committee Chairperson for Wilton Manors Events. Romero feels a union with larger corporations will benefit, expand and sustain the future of Wilton Manors Pride and other events. Wedner and Friends promises an inclusive event with vendors such as cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, boats and
other unique attractions, to ensure something for everyone. However, Wedner cautioned the community must still come together to make this event theirs. “I am so looking for volunteers,” said Wedner. “We need you to tell your friends that we have a lot of different jobs for volunteers to do. As Hillary Clinton said, it takes a village.” !"#$%#&'(%()&*)+,#-$"".(")+,/$,+0%12+3& )+&%4+,%+05&'+"6,)##05&+0&76%)&8##4&)0$28&+9& ):(%&;#$0<%&40+4+%#=&9#%)('()(#%1

t was erroneously reported in SFGN last week that swimsuit and men’s fashion boutique Ball, which has been a fixture on Wilton Drive since 2002 closed recently. However, a recent visit to their intimate location in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors revealed a healthy business amid a shaky economy. Ball originally was established in Miami, before opening the Wilton location. There is also another location in Provincetown, Mass. Gio Romano, owner of Ball, is aware that “location, location, location, coupled with knowing the needs of your clientele is essential for business to thrive. In fact Romano attributes success from Ball’s strategic location on the Drive. Of course, having a unique product is also important. “We make our own swimsuits in the back of the store, said Romano. “The number one

The way we have designed the suit is not only will you look like you are packing in front but the way we made the back of the suit gives you a bubble butt. In addition to the swimsuits they make, Ball carries a variety of fun, fashionable clothes for the gay on the go. Romano also believes being honest to his customers is key. “If our customers look bad in our suits we will tell them to try something that will look better on them, said Romano. “You never want to just make the sell and see the customer later on and have them go off on you! After all, if an employee were approached with negative reviews at Sebastian Beach, such an incident could draw unflattering attention, ultimately to Romano’s product line. He also believes honesty with customers brings them back, but being kind to staff

In fact, currently Romano is in Provincetown’s Ball location, gearing up for summer season there while his staff is minding the store in Florida. “I tell my staff in both locations how important they are to my business. popular anti-bullying campaign has been telling bullied teens “it gets better—but the effects of past bullying often linger, according to new research. The study, released Monday (May16) in the May 2011 issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of School Health, reports that antiLGBT bullying at school “is strongly linked to negative mental health for its victims. Among those risks are an increased frequency of suicide attempts and increased risk for engaging in behaviors that can lead to infection with STDs and HIV. The increased risks exist not only while the victim is in adolescence, but also in young adulthood. It should come as no surprise that there is a link between the bullying of LGBT students and negative mental health conse-

quences. Several suicides of LGBT teens in the past year, motivated at least in part by relentless bullying because they are or were perceived to be LGBT, have made headlines and prompted an outpouring of support for LGBT youth from individuals, corporations, and politicians. Syndicated columnist Dan Savage created the “It Gets Better Project last September to provide youth with videos of LGBT adults and allies who reassure them that life does get better and encourage them to seek help from an adult. But, until now, there have been no formal studies of the long-term effects of such bullying on LGBT people in the United States. The new research, by Dr. Stephen T. Russell, distinguished professor at the University of Arizona, and Dr. Caitlin Ryan, director of the Family Acceptance Project at San Francisco State University, found that youth

at Robertson said on June 10, 1998, that Orlando, Fla., should beware of hurricanes, since it, and Disney World, allow Gay Days to be held there. “I would warn Orlando that you’re right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don’t think I’d be waving those flags in God’s face if I were you,’’ Robertson said on his TV show, The 700 Club. In the months following the statement, Orlando was spared, but hurricanes Charley and Frances made landfall in Texas, dumping heavy rains, killing more than 14 people, and both hitting the town of Corpus Christi. Apparently even God has a sense of humor. So much for the “God hates gays” theory. Gay Days is not sponsored by Disney, in fact, they emphatically refuse to acknowledge the gathering actually happens on their grounds. This is even though it has ballooned from a one day celebration of friends sporting red T-shirts in 1991, into almost two weeks of events and borderline wholesome fun, attracting gays from all over the country and world, who turn the park into a red sea of bopping humanity. The pretense on the part of Disney that thousands and thousands of gays gather on their grounds just by chance every June is hilarious. Their denial has more to do with preserving their supposed “family image” and the fact that they continue to being the target of mass protests, veiled threats, pseudo boycotts, and implied violence, spearheaded by the religious right and the crazy Christers among its hardcore followers. Who hasn’t been to Disney at least once? Come on let’s be serious, if anybody is out of place at the Magic Kingdom on any given day it’s heterosexual adult males. Somewhere between the Main Street afternoon parade, Enchanted Castle and doing Run-
While the Magic Kingdom does not openly promote or discourage the event, many inside, starting with Prime Minister Mickey, dread its arrival every year. It’s a political land mine and Disney does their best to walk it very carefully. It’s not the first time that they have incurred the wrath of the far right. David Caton from the Florida Family Association announced that his organization has raised more money and will rent airplanes with banners “to warn families about Gay Day at Disney“ 10 hours per day on both Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. “Florida Family Association wants to warn families about this offensive event before they arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday,” noted Caton. “This airplane banner is our best effort to accomplish that goal.”
The Christian Action Network has an ongoing boycott of all Disney products – with no impact on Disney’s earnings or mass appeal. Their official declaration states that they are “shocked and outraged” that Disney has transformed this traditionally macho and Christian establishment, where men dance about in tights and make up, where cartoon animals speak and practice magic, into an anti-family values den of iniquity and debauchery like “Sodom and Gomorrah.” And as in the biblical science fiction story of Sodom and Gomorrah this immoral
teor.” Apparently, in his twisted mind, the real Disneyland is a playground, full of lightness and whimsy, staffed by cartoon characters, with the soundtrack courtesy of the laughter of children riding “It’s a Small World.” Can there be any place more joyous and gay ...what? Oh, you meant gay in the homosexual sense? Oh no, in that case Fire and Brimstone are-a-coming! He forgets that Disney is about fun in the purest sense and simplest form. It’s open to ALL comers with no prejudice. Known for philanthropy in many areas, this corporate giant has a refreshing closeted liberal slant. It has contributed and supported Planned Parenthood through grants and gift matching programs. The argument is often put forth that since Christian groups congregate at Disney World, why not gays? Diamonds over the many years. Michael Trueblood was an incredible leader,” the statement read. Over the years Trueblood was very active at the MCCPB serving on the board of directors and chairing the Rainbow Ball Event from 2007-2008, and co-chairing that same event in 2009. For several years Trueblood hosted the annual Denim and Diamonds fundraiser at his home and each week served in the role of Hospitality Team Leader, providing coffee and refreshments following each worship service.

ill Newton and Warren Patterson, a married couple from Boston now living in Wilton Manors went to the Pride Center at Equality Park for the flea market, Saturday, May 7. After parking in the back of the facility, near the annex, they saw a group of young men. Bill and Warren are a friendly pair, when they converged with the group of young men they struck up a conversation. “What meeting were you at,” they asked the group, whom Newton and Patterson described as being nicely dressed. “Scientology,” one of the men responded. The response alarmed the couple. For in addition to being widely considered a cult, Scientology officially frowned upon homosexuality for many years. Critics believe the group’s 2002 acceptance of gay members is not in earnest, as anti-gay sentiments are still in their official dogma. A few days later, the gentlemen came into SFGN, asking if we knew Scientologists were meeting at the Pride Center. None of us were aware of any organized religions – other than
the Church of the Holy SpiritSong – meeting on the Equality Park campus. “Maybe they were attending a recovery meeting,” offered someone in the office. “Then why wouldn’t they just say they were at an A.A. meeting,” Warren and Bill asked. The gentlemen were gracious but unsatisfied with our answer. They went to the Pride Center to get to the bottom of things. Less than an hour later they returned to our office, after learning no Scientology group meets at the center. “We asked about Saturday morning meetings, around 10 a.m.,” said Bill Newton. “We were told the A. A. meeting ends at that time. One up on us, young man! He had us convinced.” It seems the young man was ashamed to label himself as having attended an A. A. meeting. However, since the second letter stands for anonymous, one must consider if the young man was merely following the group to the letter.

hirty-five years ago today I said, “Hello” to Ray for the first time in Boston. I was moving into his apartment with my Irish setter Jeremy, a small U-Haul of possessions, and no intention of entering another long-term relationship. Ray got into my red Opel wagon to guide me home. He did indeed. A couple of weeks ago, I sat with a friend at Starbucks who spoke with fear that he would cry as he described his life without his recently-departed life partner. He’s no longer able to play the music they loved, nor banter with his employees. He wears his lover’s Tshirts to bed to feel close, and to be able to sleep. When he said, “Goodbye,” he thought he was prepared to let go of his ailing soul mate, but he wasn’t. “I talk to him,” he confided with embarrassment. “That’s what you should be doing,” I affirmed. Ray’s anniversary card to me has a drawing of a tandem bike with hearts on each seat. On the front cover it says, “Better Together.” Inside, Ray wrote, “I’ll pedal, you steer. It has been a profound journey and I cherish every step.” My friend with whom I sat at Starbucks told me he didn’t know how to handle the most simple daily routines: eating breakfast,
reading the paper, having dinner, and watching television at night. These were things he shared daily with his partner for over half of his life. How was he now to focus on anything when all he can think about is that his beloved is gone, and won’t be coming back? My card to Ray asked, “Would you ever have imagined we would have found such contentment in life? You are my best friend, my spouse, my advocate, my love, my inspiration, and my inexhaustible source of joy. Thank you for sharing your life with me.” It gets more and more difficult for me to come up with unique ways to say to Ray, “I love you,” and “Thank you.” I recommended to my grieving and inconsolable friend that he change all of his routines until the pain subsides. Instead of sitting alone at the breakfast table first thing in the morning, why not take a cup of coffee on a walk to a park where he might sit and look at the water, and listen to the birds? Instead of sitting in the evening at home alone in the room with the television off, why not go to a movie, buy a bag of popcorn, and get lost for two hours in other people’s dramas? When I came downstairs this morning, with my anniversary card in hand, I found
a wrapped package next to my chair. Before I sat down with Ray, I ate the half banana he left for me, and swallowed the handful of vitamins and medications he had organized next to my glass of water. I have no idea what I’m taking but I trust that he’s taking good care of me. My gift from him was a box of BBC programs, including the original Upstairs Downstairs series. These we will watch together with delight for many nights to come. His gift is a bouquet
of either peonies or sunflowers, whichever Maghi, our local florist, is able to get. She knows, after many years, pink peonies are Ray’s favorite flower. My friend and his departed husband had spent many hours each day sharing with each other what they were feeling and thinking. One of them might say, “I had the strangest dream last night.” And the other would respond, “Oh, tell me about it.” When your best friend leaves you, who do you tell your dreams to? I suggested that my grieving friend write his boyfriend a letter each morning and each night. “The first
thing you do when you get to work,” I said, “is write him a letter to tell him everything that you’re feeling and doing. At the end of the day, do the same.” He liked the idea very much. Ray is painfully making his way home at this minute after meeting a friend for coffee. The young man who jumped into my car thirty-five years ago now has six titanium rods, eight screws, and several inches of crushed cadaver bone holding his lower back together. He feels very frustrated that he’s unable to do things around the house that in the past gave him great satisfaction. He can’t bend or twist ever again. “Here’s to thirty-five more years,” Ray said this morning. “I don’t think so, honey,” I replied. “I’d be happy for 12.” “You’d only be 75,” he protested. As we went back and forth about how long we each wanted to live, we had in the back of our minds that one of us will one day need to say, “Goodbye” to the other. Unless we die together, the day will come, sooner than we expect or want, when one of us will have to figure out how to enjoy living without the other. There is no fighting it. It is the way of life. We say, “Hello” and open ourselves up to extraordinary joy, but doing so requires us to also say, “Goodbye,” and that is very painful. Speaking of, I need to say, “Goodbye” to you, the generous reader of my column/blog, as I take several weeks off to spend more time playing with Ray, and the other people in my life I cherish. I’ll be back in the fall.

n the course of a delightful evening with Mark Hess and Gary Wentzel, I never got their “boiled egg story” or their “Key West story,” both of which were promised, but sidetracked by other personal stories about the shared happy life of two popular bartenders at Georgie’s Alibi in Wilton Manors. For many years my frequent interaction with them consisted entirely of the words “Corona, please” and listening to friends’ speculation about their private lives. Here is the exposé you’ve been waiting for. Mark grew up in Kingsley, Iowa, population 1,000, with no strong feeling for his German heritage. Gary grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he resisted strong feelings to try on the Amish bonnets of the neighbors. A move to Tampa with his par-
ents gave Mark the desire to relocate to Florida. Family vacations in Hollywood gave Gary the same conviction. Mark met a man in Iowa and wanted a fresh location—Florida—to start a fresh life with him. Gary told his Pennsylvania boyfriend “I’m moving to Florida. If you want to come, okay. If not, fine.” Mark, who had been doing restaurant work since he was 16, found a job at Fort Lauderdale’s Cathode Ray club. When its owner bought Chardee’s, Mark became that legendary restaurant’s bartender. Gary was a server at the Fort Lauderdale restaurant, Il Mulino. They met one evening while leaving the Cathode Ray. Discovering a mutual love for vintage cars, they headed together to the Copa where they prolonged the conversation. When Mark’s roommate left for Ogunquit, and Gary’s boyfriend left town—he hated both Florida and Gary’s

friendship with Mark—Gary moved into Mark’s home. At that point, they were still just friends. Gary says that when he moved in “We had never even seen each other naked. I tried, but it didn’t happen.” As in that scene in It Happened One Night in which the blanket separating the beds of Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable drops to the floor, the two men eventually did the deed. This year is their 19 as a couple and second anniversary as a married couple. I did get the wedding story. Mark and Gary spend their annual summer vacation on their boat on a lake in Iowa where they are known as “those two gay guys who come up every year from Florida.” When same-sex marriage was legalized in Iowa, Gary made an offhand remark on Facebook saying, “Well I guess we can get married now.” Their friends cheered. The men invited several close friends to attend a small no-frills Fourth of July ceremony on the boat. When they reached the spot designated for the ceremony, Mark and Gary were surprised to find three other boatloads of friends who would not be kept away from
celebrating their union. They had not invited family members despite the fact that both men have gay siblings. Mark and Gary are not estranged from their families but both believe that their core family is the one they have created for themselves over their years together. With typical mid-Western reserve, Mark’s mother responded “Hunh” and continued to wash the dishes in the kitchen sink when he told her the news. Gary informed his mother before the ceremony, and two weeks after the wedding she said, “So Gary, I forgot to ask. How was your episode?” The men clarify there is no animosity in this, and Gary, who for years has taken the annual Christmas photo of Mark’s family is now in that photo. Messages from Gary’s father always contained the sign-off “Love youz guys.” Mark and Gary love their work and the opportunity to raise money for the community. If they can fit into their dresses, they intend to reappear as “Sissy and Sassy” on June 13 at Alibi’s annual Turnabout charity event. hame on The New York Times. A housekeeper gets pregnant by the famous and powerful man for whom she works. For 10 years, she continues to work in the home and never says a word. After 20 years of service, she retires and buys a house 100 miles away to raise her son. Now that house is surrounded by reporters. The New York Times, in a story on Thursday, insisted that its policy was not to name the person in such situations. But that isn’t really true; they just don’t go first. If somebody else decides to destroy the privacy of a housekeeper – say, a blogger or TMZ – then the Times will publish the name (and even print a picture of her house) as long as they can confirm its accuracy. Since when does The New York Times base its editorial decisions on what TMZ does? This is exactly what happened in the William Kennedy Smith case, but it was NBC who did it first, and The New York Times, like any competitive toddler, followed right behind. Not surprisingly, the woman is being blamed for that, too. After all, why didn’t she know enough to take down her MySpace account, which included pictures of her son and her (now being reprinted on various Internet sites)? Now his life will never be the same, either. Maybe she had never before been the center of a media frenzy. The maid who was allegedly assaulted and forced to perform oral sex on IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is not faring much better. While The New York Times has not published her name yet, French media have – and I suppose if I spent five minutes online I could find it. But her life is being destroyed anyway. She can’t go home because it is surrounded by reporters. She can’t go back to work because the hotel is also swarming with reporters. She is a 32-year-old widowed immigrant with a 15-year-old daughter she hasn’t been able to see in days. She was cleaning hotel rooms. The very notion – now being aggressively pushed by his lawyers – that this was consensual sex almost certainly means there is forensic evidence (such as
DNA) establishing the fact of a sexual act. In that case, the only defense available to Strauss-Kahn is to place the blame on a promiscuous maid who would have sex with a strange old man before cleaning the toilet in the next room. Nuts and sluts. No wonder she is afraid her life will never be the same. “It is part of a fascination with the man, Suzanne Goldberg, director of the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law at Columbia University, told The New York Times. “What sort of woman could this powerful man have been attracted to? I have enormous respect for Goldberg, but in my judgment, this has nothing to do with the sort of woman a powerful man is attracted to. Was the head of the IMF really attracted to the maid cleaning his room? Was Arnold Schwarzenegger really attracted to the housekeeper who cleaned his home?
Or did they see these women as powerless and vulnerable, as women who could be used and (at least in the case of Strauss-Kahn) discarded like toilet paper on the way out the door? Both of these men, need I point out, are married to beautiful, intelligent and accomplished women. They travel in the kind of circles where they meet plenty of beautiful women they could have sex with, without committing a crime or humiliating their family. Our system of justice presumes innocence not because that is the likely truth, but because it is fair. If the prosecutors of the Manhattan sex crimes unit and the judge who presided at the bail hearing didn’t believe the maid’s account, StraussKahn wouldn’t be at Rikers Island. If what she said is true, it has nothing to do with
attraction. Sexual assault is a crime of violence, not sex. It has more to do with vulnerability than good looks. As for Arnold, he announced Thursday that he is putting all new film projects on hold. But the Hollywood buzz is that he’ll be back, that this is unlikely to have any impact on his return to movie star status. Maybe so. But his family, including the housekeeper and her son, almost certainly will pay the price.!

ver the past two decades, LGBT educational issues surged into the headlines. Library books, curricula, protection for gay students – all have earned important national attention. One area, though, still seemed off limits: sports. Finally the spotlight has shined on that enormous, important area of school. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s “Changing the Game: The GLSEN Sports Project” promises to make teams and physical education class safer and more inclusive for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression. The project – which took shape at a two-day planning session in New York in December, and is directed by Pat Griffin, a veteran educator, writer and coach at the University of Massachusetts – was launched in March, on the GLSEN website (www.glsen.org). “It makes you a smaller person when you can’t bring who you are not only to your sport experience, but to every part of your life,” explains Griffin. The site hopes to reach several different constituencies – athletes (gay and straight), coaches, administrators and
parents. All have an impact on LGBT sports issues, whether they realize it or not. “Athletes are natural leaders,” notes three-time NCAA All-American wrestler Hudson Taylor, a straight ally. “We have the ability to influence how people act, are treated, and speak about and to each other.” “Athletes have an important role in influencing a school’s climate,” adds Massachusetts educator Jeff Perrotti. “I’m interested in using that power and privilege to make schools safe and inclusive for all students.” The website offers a variety of resources. For example, “Game Plans” provide suggestions for making teams safe for LGBT players. A page for athletes encourages them to judge teammates and coaches on the basis of character, not sexuality, and to avoid making anti-gay jokes or comments. The coaches’ page advises them to put Safe Spot Space stickers on locker room and office doors; to educate themselves about LGBT issues; make strong statements about respect for diversity, and use inclusive language. Administrators should assume that there are LGBT people on their teams and staffs, and also make their expectations

about inclusion and respect clear to coaches and athletes. Parents of recruited athletes can report anti-gay statements made by college coaches to appropriate administrators, and encourage their school’s athletic department to sponsor educational programs on LGBT issues in sport. A “Team Respect Challenge” page asks athletes to make a pledge to be leaders in their schools – and back up that pledge by posting a team photo on the website. The first team to do so, I am proud to say, is the Staples High School boys soccer team, coached by yours truly. Full disclosure: I am a member of the GLSEN Sports Project advisory board. The 19-member board also includes Jamal Brown, a former out Dartmouth track star who is now a senior legal assistant; Helen Carroll, director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights sports project who coached the University of North Carolina-Asheville to a national championship; transgender hammer thrower Keelin Godsey; former NFL pro Wade Davis; Dr. Dee Mosbacher, whose documentary films explore homophobia in women’s sports; multicultural director Lea Robinson (a Final Four basketball player with Western Kentucky University); photographer Jeff Sheng; Brian Sims, an attorney and former NCAA football captain, and Cyd Zeigler, co-founder of Outsports.com. “The military and many religions have come a long way toward acceptance,” notes Zeigler. “Sports is the last great closet. Making it safer for gay kids to be out on their teams is part of my life’s mission.” In addition to the advisory board, the Sports Project has signed an “All-Star Team” of current and former professional, Olympic and collegiate athletes, coaches and leaders. All have committed publicly to the values of safety, respect and inclusion for student-athletes. The list includes Billie Jean King, Billy Bean, Brian Burke, John Amaechi and Martina Navratilova. A “Game Changers” page on the website includes short videos. A variety of figures – coaches, athletes (including one who is transgender) and straight allies – talk about times they took a stand supporting LGBT sports issues. Viewers are encouraged to submit their own videos. In the works: a “Bring Your ‘A’ Game” campaign. The “A” stands for “allies.” The site will offer ways to share their commitment to speak up and stand up for respect on their teams and in their schools. The Sports Project offers individual consultation about making individual school athletic or physical education programs more inclusive. Also available: “Changing the Game” workshops for athletic department staffs. For a long time, sports figures have talked about the need to address anti-gay behavior in school sports. Finally, GLSEN is walking the talk – and changing the game.. For more information, go to sports.glsen.org. To contact Griffin directly, email sportsproject@glsen.org.

orking nine to five Monday through Friday can be exhausting, especially when you have to run home, clean house, cook dinner and wash clothes. Once you’ve finished the daily routine, hours have passed and you make your way to bed. As you begin to draw your curtains for the night you behold a shocking sight outside the window. What do you see? Your backyard has erupted into the Amazonian Jungle! When you should be relaxing during your down time, sipping mimosas by your pool, you’re left to take on the grueling task of mowing the lawn yourself. Why not call Angler Lawn and Landscape, who provide “Full Service to Meet Your Individual Needs” and treat yourself to the comfort and rest you deserve.
Established in 1995, Angler Lawn services homes and businesses in the Fort Lauderdale area. Angler Lawn takes care of yard cutting, to hedge trimming, even installing grass and sprinkler systems. They will give you a free quote on your property and the second cut comes free after the initial yard clean up and trimming. SFGN spoke to Pat O’Loughlin, owner of Angler Lawn and Landscape, who’s a native, born and raised in Broward County. “My company provides full service landscaping and we cater to our client’s needs. Since we’re in such a bad economy, we’re flexible. When we are doing a job like a clean out or an instillation, we think about the whole project, but we also understand !"##$%&"'(

people are limited in cash flow. What we can do is work in sections. We can do the front yard one month and the back yard the next.” O’Loughlin also notes that Angler Lawn accepts credit cards, which is another example of how flexible they can be. “We’re able to work weekly, bi-weekly, even once a month as it all depends on our client’s needs.” Leave the rusty push mower in the back of the garage where it belongs. There must be adequate tools for any job you take on in landscaping. Angler has two riding
mowers, a Honda self driven push mower, hedge trimmers, weed-whackers and a plethora of other tools to make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood. Take that beach day you’ve been looking forward to since Monday around 2 p.m. and call Pat O’Loughlin and his crew at Angler Lawn and Landscape for all your lawn maintenance. Their hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information and a free quote, call Pat O’Loughlin at 954-684-1741.
