T
he Champions of Equality Awards drew over 600 guests, 16 corporate sponsors, and generated over $85,000 to support the Miamibased non-profit. Save DADE, which has a history of defending equality in Florida since the 1970s, chose to honor recipients who successfully fought against the ban against LGBT individuals in the state of Florida. The event honored Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz, the American Civil Liberties Union and Greenberg Traurig, LLP. The private legal firm succesfully challenged LGBT-discrimination in adoption – expressing solidarity with those discriminated against by the ban in taking on the case pro-bono. C.J. Ortuno, Executive Director of SAVE Dade said it was their greatest event to date. “However, money and ticket sales were not the only indicators for success. With more than 20 local, state, and federal elected officials and four MiamiDade Mayoral candidates in attendance, we were politically successful as well. SAVE staff and board are very happy and have received glowing comments since the event. I had one volunteer tell me the event was being talked about at Church on Sunday. My most sincere thanks and appreciation for my two Co-Chairs Cristy McClelland and Jay Windsor; without them none of this was possible,” OrCongresswoman Wasserman Schultz and her daughter tuno stated to SFGN.

Viveros, a graduating senior at McFatter Technical High School in Davie, said he wasn’t sure he would win. “Then they called my name and I was in complete shock,” said Viveros, a Davie resident and president of the school’s GayStraight Alliance. Viveros said some students campaigned against him but others praised him for his courage. “It’s a big stepping stone,” Viveros said. “People can see it’s finally OK to be who you are and do what you want no matter how different you are.” Viveros noted that Juan Macias, an openly gay teen and graduating senior at McFatter, was crowned prom king. SFGN BRIEFS Gay Candidate Wins in miami Shores Jesse Walters, an openly gay candidate from Miami Shores, unseated an incumbent in last week’s election. Before the election controversy ensued after some of Walters’ signs were defaced with anti-gay slurs. “It’s hard to explain how unsettling something like this is until you experience it. Some folks are very scared by our campaign, but Miami Shores is not a place for this type of hate,” Walters told the Miami Herald in response. “This will only energize us more.”
Daniel Choi Beaten, Arrested in Russia Army veteran and gay activist Daniel Choi was among a group of people mobbed at a gay pride parade in Moscow by police and a group of Neo-Nazis this weekend, the Advocate reports. Video of the attack was posted online at Gay.AmericaBlog.com, where Choi is seen walking quietly, when a mob of uniformed and undercover police attack him and another activist. Choi and seven others were hauled off to the police station in Moscow after the attack. He and the other foreign protesters were released without a charge or fine,
but the Russians had to remain overnight. “Anna Komarova, who is under arrest, reports being pressured by the police to give information about the organization of Moscow Gay Pride,” British gay rights activist Peter Tatchell told the Advocate. “The police are threatening to detain her for 48 hours unless she gives them the information they want.” Choi is best known for coming out on The Rachel Maddow Show in March 2009 and then publicly challenging Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He was later discharged from the Army. The U.S. Department of State released a statement regarding the situation. “We note with concern... that a peace-
able demonstration of Russians advocating for the rights of gays and lesbians, joined by international supporters, was forcefully disrupted by counter-protesters, and that Russian security forces then detained people from both groups,” US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement. “Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right all members of the OSCE committed to, including in the Moscow declaration and as recently as the Astana summit. As nationwide legislative elections approach, constraints on the ability of Russian citizens peacefully to gather and express their views will be closely watched in evaluating the integrity of the electoral process.”

SFGN BRIEFS Most Countries accept gays New study shows vast majority of countries have become more accepting of homosexuality. The report was conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. “Overwhelmingly, societies have become more accepting of homosexual behavior,” the study concludes. Out of the 31 countries surveyed approval of homosexuality increased in 27 of them while it decreased in Russia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Latvia. The report also found attitudes towards homosexuality are more tolerant among younger adults, those with more educa-
tion, those attending religious services less often, and residents of large metropolitan areas. This pattern prevailed in almost all countries and the relationships are substantial in most countries. The top five countries with the highest acceptance of homosexuality ratings are the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and Belgium. The bottom half of the list consisted of seven ex-Socialist states, four East Asian nations, three Latin American countries and Cyprus, South Africa, and Turkey.

Tennessee Anti-Gay Law Faces Showdown
G
ay legal activists are already working on a legal challenge to a new state law in Tennessee, signed into law Monday by Republican Governor Bill Haslam, which prevents local governments from requiring their contractors to abide by local human rights ordinances. The legislation, entitled the “Equal Access to Intrastate Commerce Act,” was aimed at undermining a new Nashville metro area ordinance, signed into law in April. The ordinance prohibited city contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It was passed by the Nashville/Davidson County Metro Council. Abby Rubenfeld, a Nashville attorney and a former legal director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, said Tuesday that the new state law will “definitely be challenged—we are working on it right now.” Governor Haslam, who took office January 15, pitched his support for the law as

According to Lambda Legal, Tennessee has no statewide laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in either public or private employment. Casada told local television NewsChannel 5 that the Nashville ordinance amounted to having the city “dictating moral policy.” Another anti-gay bill—one that sought to prohibit teachers from providing any information about homosexuality to public school students in grades K through 8— passed the Tennessee Senate 19 to 11 on May 20 but did not get a vote in the House before the General Assembly adjourned May 21. The original bill—dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay Bill”—was amended to limit sex education curricula “to natural reproduction science.” The Tennessee Equality Project said the bill “remains a threat to safe schools for all students in Tennessee,” even though the bill no longer references homosexuality specifically.

General Gayety
Squeeze Play By Leslie Robinson
I
n just a week four male sports figures came out. From the basketball world, Rick Welts, the CEO of the Phoenix Suns, and Will Sheridan, a former player at Villanova, went public. Pro bowler Scott Norton and ESPN sports reporter Jared Max decided it was time, too. What’s going through the minds of other gay men in the sports world now? Perhaps some of them are thinking along these lines: Jesus H. Christ! Four of ’em! It’s a damn stampede. Stampede, hah, probably a rodeo star will be next. “Brokeback Mountain” lives. I didn’t figure on coming out of the closet till I was . . . Who am I kidding, I never figured on it. I just knew I couldn’t. Automatic. Like throwing to first. Automatic. Except for that throw in the fifth yesterday. I threw it to the friggin’ cameraman. Two errors in a week. Not like me at all. Maybe this stuff is getting to me. Maybe if another guy comes out I’ll forget how to bat. I bet it really is easier if you don’t play a team sport. Too late for me to switch to pole-vaulting. That bowler. Bowling isn’t a team sport. Or is it? Do two guys ever bowl at the same time in the same lane? Yeah, if they’re named Fred and Barney. It’s stupid to say it’s easy for guys doing individual sports to admit they’re gay. It’s never easy. Being a man is what it’s about. Masculinity. “Macho, macho man.” Oh, God. Baseball, baseball, baseball. It’s all I’ve ever been, all I’ve ever wanted to be. And I got here. The big leagues. Made everybody proud. Worked my ass off. Made me proud. God, Coach Graham. Made me a great shortstop. And told the freshmen to stop throwing like fairies. Said every ball thrown short in
the dirt kicked up fairy dust. Be a man. Be a man. Doesn’t a man stand up for himself? No goddamn way. If I came out, told the whole world I’m gay, I’d be screwed! Don’t think they could actually fire me, but I’d be sent down to Little League. My teammates would freak. Well, not Adam. Or Jake. They’re pretty cool. And Juan has a gay brother. Len, with his “faggot this” and “faggot that” would probably wanna fight. Others just flat wouldn’t talk to me. But others would ask me about being gay I bet. Could I handle that? Being the dugout homo expert? Here’s the thing. If I got honest, I could stop dating in the shadows. Maybe even snag me a handsome Hollywood type. Or a third baseman. The fans? Probably mixed. Mostly good. The away fans, that’s gonna be bad. They’ll boo me, yell all kinds of crap. “Hey Frazier, do you like fair balls or foul balls?” Ownership? Too busy screwing 20-yearolds to notice. Old Mac? He won’t get it. But he stands by all his players, so maybe . . . So if I came out, it would be mega-stress. Dealing with the reactions of everybody, from the ball boys to the media. On the other side, there’s the stress I have now. Living a lie. Which is kinda getting to me. Damn those four! All my life I’ve had peer pressure to stay hidden. Now I’ve got peer pressure to come out! I suppose that’s cool in a way. Barriers are falling. Boom. Okay, okay, I’ll make a deal with myself. I’ll definitely come out when I retire. And I’ll think about coming out sooner. Jesus, maybe I’ll join the next wave. It’ll be me, a hockey executive, a swimmer and a play-by-play man. But one of them better go first.
Letters, We Got Letters COMMENT ON: ‘WILTON DRIVE: PLAYERS DEBATE IF WILTON DRIVE IS WILTING OR BLOOMING’ (5/18/11) I read with great interest Jason Parsley’s article about Wilton Drive. May I add a few thoughts? The idea of narrowing the drive is not a new one. It has been talked about for years. This would greatly benefit the area and bring the two sides of the street together, creating a true pedestrian thoroughfare.Think Duval St. in Key West, Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road, and Commercial St. in Provincetown to name a few.Yes it could and should happen here. Another benefit is greatly increased safety when crossing the road. How many more deaths and injuries is it going to take before we make this vital improvement happen? The parking meters are supposed to help merchants by preventing people from tying up a spot. This might be a good idea during normal business hours, but charging until 3 a.m.? Even Boston’s Newbury St. only charges until 8. We’re just adding to the annoyance
and difficulty of patronizing our own night time businesses. A parking garage. Again, here is a great idea that has been discussed for years. We (the city) already own the perfect location. The old city hall / Rothe’s garage site on Wilton Drive at 21st Court. Where would Fort Lauderdale’s night life areas be without parking garages? When are we going to make this happen here? Wilton Manors is a really special place. As a resident and homeowner since 1993 it frustrates me to see all this foot-dragging going on. Yes there are obstacles but they can be overcome. Nothing comes without cost but the price of doing nothing is much higher. Our merchants are hurting and Oakland Park is nipping at our door. I say to our elected officials: Please, let’s get serious. Let’s get these needed projects going. Wilton Drive has so much potential. Let’s make it a place that all of us, merchants, residents and visitors alike, can be proud of.

T
he U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on May 23 announced up to $9.1 million in grants to address the housing needs of people with low-incomes living with HIV/AIDS. The competitive grants, offered through the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program, are intended for states and local communities to create more integrated strategies and partnerships between housing programs and other health and human services. David Vos, director of HUD’s Office of HIV/AIDS Housing, said in a statement on the HUD Web site that the partnerships will help show “how to take holistic approaches to serving some of the nation’s most vulnerable, persons living with chronic health challenges and risks of homelessness.” At the end of the three-year grants, HUD will evaluate and publish the results of grantees’ efforts in an Integrated HIV/AIDS Housing Plan. The IHHP will be an online resource to help communities “integrate the delivery of housing along with medical and other supportive services,” said Vos. The grants and IHHP are intended to support both President Obama’s National HIV/ AIDS Strategy and his Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness. President Obama released a National HIV/ AIDS Strategy in July 2010 with specific,

It has issued proposed new regulations intended to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in its core housing programs. It also clarified that, although the Fair Housing Act – a pivotal civil rights act that prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, and familial status, does not specifically cover sexual orientation – or gender identity-based discrimination, it may still provide them with protection in other ways. For example, discrimination against a gay man because of fear he will spread HIV/AIDS may constitute illegal discrimination on the basis of a perceived disability, HIV/AIDS. HUD has also instructed staff to inform individuals about state and local LGBT protections that may apply to them. And HUD has told all its grant applicants they must comply with such laws, where they exist. Applications for the new grants should be submitted at grants.gov by August 2, 2011. Winners are expected to be announced by September 20, 2011.

“Do you want to be remembered as a leader on civil rights? Or an obstructionist? On matters of freedom and equality, history has not remembered obstructionists kindly. Not on abolition. Not on abortion. Not on women’s suffrage. Not on workers’ rights. Not on civil rights. And it will be no different on marriage rights.” “There is no retreating to a past that has disappeared. There is no holding back a wave that has crested. And there is no denying a freedom that belongs to us all.” “The time has come for us to fulfill the dreams that exploded onto Sheridan Square 42 years ago: to allow thousands of men and women to become full members of the American family, and to take the next step on the inspired journey our founding fathers first began.”

By A. Sebastian Fortino io Spano, like many professional artists, was inspired at an early age by the medium in which he now primarily works. He discovered his passion for photography at the age of 10. A family friend who was also a professional photographer saw Spano’s photographs of nature at a 4-H Club meeting and gave him his first camera.

Get Out Those Red Shirts!
L
ooking for a getaway this weekend? It’s not too late to hop on the Florida Turnpike and head to Orlando for the annual Gay Days festivities at Walt Disney World. Believe it or not, 20 years have passed since the first gaggle of red-shirted gays made their first pilgrimage to the Magic Kingdom on the first Saturday in June. The right wing religious protesters who picketed the park have long since moved on and the event has turned into a major party weekend with thousands flocking to Central Florida for a week of festivities. In fact, bring several red shirts because the gang is also heading to Disney’s Animal Kingdom on Thursday, Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Friday, and EPCOT on Sunday. The Doubletree by Hilton at SeaWorld serves as the official Gay Days headquarters. In addition to daily pool parties featuring some of the most popular DJs on the circuit, revelers can find a business expo, Roundup meetings (12-step programs) and even a literary festival, but we’re betting there aren’t too many homos in Orlando looking to catch up on their favorite books! By night, The Parliament House, Orlando’s infamous entertainment complex, offers plenty of guest performers, musicians and drag queens, if you didn’t get enough of Mickey, Minnie and the rest of the Disney gang by day. And, if there’s one party not to miss, head to Typhoon Lagoon on Friday night for Riptide. Thousands of Speedo-clad studs overrun the water park and you’re guaranteed to make a splash….and not just in the wave pool! Even if you’re stuck in South Florida this week, there’s plenty to do. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

There’s plenty of friendly folk about and live entertainment, too, but the best reason to stop by is the happy hour drink special. unday t-dances are popular in South Florida, but The Depot offers the only weekly poolside tea dance. Located at 2935 N. Federal Highway, The Depot is a great place to cool off in the summer sun. Do you have anything planned for the weekend? If you don’t know where to go, or where the hotties are hiding, I’m pretty sure I can point you in the right direction.
G
ay Days is here, people. The festivities start tomorrow so if you were dumb enough not to read my datebook weeks before had no idea about it, tough luck and maybe next year. Every hotel is booked up so hopefully you have a group of friends who are willing to let you sleep on the floor. Disney’s water park, Typhoon Lagoon, in my opinion is the best event. There are thousands of half naked men, booze, tons of water slides, rides and live music. Remember to wear red when you go to the Disney park. If you catch me out, tell me to have a happy birthday, I turn 21 23 on Thursday.
If you are stuck in Fort Lauderdale for the week though, have no fear. There’s plenty of other activities to enjoy instead of partying it up in Orlando. Go to the Manor this weekend and party the night away. Bubblegum Fridays, hosted by Anjo and Oliver is better than any club in Orlando. The drinks are amazing and affordable, the music is always current and hot, and the boys are young, hung and full of… enthusiasm. Be sure to try the Manor’s exceptional menu before you leave for the
night. You have to sober up somehow! You might not feel like partying, which is understandable so check out Gateway Theater where Sunrise and U.S. 1 meet. The theater has been around for years and when you sit down with your popcorn and soda, it gives you the feeling you’ve traveled back in time. The screening rooms are old fashioned and intimate. It’s a great place to take that special someone out on a date. Gateway shows both independent and mainstream films so there’s always something interesting to watch. ll local “Slider Specialists” were invited to answer the old question – who has the best slider in town? A challenge was extended to Fort Lauderdale restaurants and many answered! Seventeen well known eateries rose to the challenge where they created their version of the ultimate slider. Though creative and very tasteful, only one restaurant could take the crown of culinary slider master; J. Mark’s restaurant took first place overall with a Slow Roasted Prime Rib Slider: our own favorite, J. Mark’s. J.Mark’s has been voted “Best Restaurant of South Florida” and offers a variety of Certified Angus Beef Steaks, Fresh Daily Seafood selections and Happy Hour daily from 2-6 and 9-Close with half priced drink specials. They also offer a cooked-to-order weekend Brunch Menu featuring 6 different EggsBenedict and their famous Spicy Bloody Mary’s.

The Art of Capturing Alluring Images continued from page 17
However, he did not train professionally as a photographer which he feels might give him a more flexible approach to his work. “I did take a few classes in college. Often though, the professor has specific tastes,” Spano said. “Anything in art is personal taste. Anyone that views a piece of art sees something different. I haven’t found any disadvantages, in fact I think not being schooled in one particular genre allows me to create something which works for me and the clients.” For more than 20 years he worked in the entertainment industry, as both an actor and model. Behind the scenes he wrote, produced, directed and held corporate positions as well. “It was in Italy, in 1998, while working there that I was captivated by the beauty of the human body found in sculpture and art throughout Italy,” said Spano. He had an epiphany about capturing the beauty of the human form one day at a basilica outside of Venice. The work on display at Dennis Dean, now through the end of June, depicts several male models. Spano’s work seeks to capture not only a moment in time, but to create a story within the captured moment. The great baroque paintings and sculptures Spano encountered in Italy, were created with a similar mindset. Baroque masters Caravaggio and Bernini, for instance, sculpted and painted in a mé-
tier depicting movement and theatricality. It suggests to viewers they are also witnessing a moment in time. Perhaps even interrupting a scene. In “Private Viewing,” we encounter a nude, blond man, beneath a painting, in a gallery perhaps. His sandals off, eyes closed, he shields his genitals from the viewer. The scene is very private, raising many questions. Is the young man about to model for us – the viewer? Is he the artist’s fantasy – is he the viewer’s? Does his face suggest tender lust – or nervousness being exposed? Another image “Ocean Dream” depicts a man on the beach. The water curling around him, receding, perhaps delivering him to the shore – once again a moment in time is caught, the viewer must decide upon the narrative. Spano, realizes when he shoots nudes he is asking models to give the viewer a part of their soul. Therefore capturing images is also about getting the right combination of physicality and personality. “The most important thing to me is what makes the model tick so to speak,” said Spano. “I need to understand their personality so they can communicate what they want in the picture. It’s very gratifying to hear the model say, ‘Oh, that’s me? It’s amazing.’ Photography is not a one-sided application.”

Gio Spano
Presently working on an editorial layout and cover for the June 19th Issue of BeautifulMag (www.BeautifulMag.com) featuring a porn star couple, Spano hopes to complete a coffee table book by the end of the year. Meanwhile, his work is being showcased in various galleries, including one in Tampa, and the Dennis Dean exhibit has already been profiled locally in both Hotspots and Mark Magazine. A self taught photographer, given his first camera at the age of 10, Gio at first never dreamed he could make a living “doing what I enjoy most.” Giving up the corporate world a few years ago, he now claims he is happiest most “when capturing an alluring image of someone or something.” In the mid-90’s he had the great opportunity of living and working in Italy for a period of time. He credits this time of his life as the inspirational period that instigated his passion for capturing images of the human body. “The ancient Greeks and Romans were not ashamed to show the splendor of the nude body in all manifestations of their art.”

Lesbian Forced into “Ex-Gay” Therapy Amanda Booker claims a sheriff’s department forced her to see “ex-gay” therapists paid for by the county – rather than mandated psychiatric treatment. She filed a lawsuit in the U.S. district court for the northern district of Georgia against the Bartow County sheriff’s department and others. The charges are violation of constitutional rights. “Booker alleges in the suit that after her family called the Bartow County Sheriff’s Department in April 2010 to have her committed to a psychiatric hospital due to her drug addiction, the deputies ignored a judge’s order to take her to Northwest
Georgia Regional Hospital in Rome, Ga.,” reports the Georgia Voice. Instead, the lawsuit alleges Booker was taken to a different hospital after she began having seizures. Lt. Mark Mayton of the Bartow sheriff’s department harassed Booker about her lesbian relationship while she was hospitalized. Upon release from the hospital, Mayton transported her to his friend’s home in his personal vehicle, where she remained for up to one week. Later, according to the lawsuit, Mayton took Booker to the private residence of selfdescribed “evangelists” Chris and Donna McDowell. The couple received $600 to “convert” Booker from being a lesbian. The suit seeks an undetermined amount of jury award for damages Booker suffered from false arrest and harassment.

Lawn and Landscape,” said one colleague. We have a broad, diverse, variety of advertisers. So if someone accidentally put in the telephone number for, oh say…an adult video distribution company instead of an LGBT-friendly religious congregation we might have a very big issue at the paper. Fortunately, the problem was much closer to home. Matthew flew to his desk and dialed the number he assigned Angler Lawn and Landscape from his company extension. A few seconds later a cell phone began ringing – specifically Matthew’s cell phone. “Oh my God! I was so used to giving out my new number last week that I just put it in place of Angler Lawn and Landscape,” he said excitedly. He then changed his voicemail to reflect the mistake and we are using this opportunity to put the correct number in SFGN.
ast week SFGN ran a story on Angler Lawn and Landscape by Matthew Clark in which he accidentally ran the wrong telephone number. Matthew was quite embarrassed, however those of who have written professionally longer told him this was nothing to be upset about. As we have an online edition we can easily fix small things that get “lost in communication.” However, we receive so many press releases, emails, and other forms of communication from the community we wondered, whose number it was which stood in for Angler’s digits? “I think the first thing you should do, is To contact Angler Lawn and Landscape, please call the number and tell whoever it is for a dial 954-448-6394 and tell them you received while they might receive messages for Angler the correct number in an odd but true manner.

Is cardio better than weight training to burn body fat? Q: Solve an argument I’m having with my gym buddy. He says lifting weights leads to bigger muscles which speed up the body’s metabolism and burns fat. I say cardio is the best way to burn fat. Who’s right? A: You are technically correct – but let’s put this in perspective before you do your victory dance. Activities such as walking and running absolutely burn more calories than an equal amount of time spent lifting weights. But strength training with weights also plays a vital role in burning fat and is extremely important for these two reasons: Strength training builds lean muscle tissue, which increases your metabolism -- meaning it burns fat and calories -- over time. Look at it this way: a bigger engine in your car burns

more fuel. Similarly, bigger muscles burn more calories. Strength training can keep your metabolism elevated -again, burning fat and calories -- for hours after you have exercised while your muscles are being repaired. This is called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption or “afterburn.” Simply stated, we burn fat when we expend more calories (energy) in our physical activities than we consume with food and drink. Rather than focus on losing fat, I would suggest you focus on increasing your overall activity level, which includes everything from running up a flight of stairs, instead of taking the elevator, to walking the pooch – in addition to a program of cardio and weight training. The intensity and

duration of any physical activity will impact your success. For optimal results in shedding fat and gaining lean muscle, your exercise routine should consist of both cardio and resistance training – together with a well-balanced, protein rich diet. Q: Is it best to do my cardio before or after I do my strength training? A: Aside from a light cardio warm-up, I believe that cardio is best done after a strength training routine for two reasons: An intense cardio workout prior to your strength training program depletes your stored glycogen (energy) levels, leaving you fatigued and unable to perform an aggressive weight training routine. After your body depletes its glycogen reserve, it must turn to excess fat for energy. Another approach is to schedule strength training and cardio workouts on different days, or separate these activities by four or more hours (cardio in the morning, weight training in the afternoon) to maximize performance in both areas. Remember, it takes 20 minutes of aerobic activity for the body to begin to burn fat, so aim to complete three to four 45-minute cardio sessions for best results.
TIP OF THE WEEK Treadmill incline works best
criminal defense
NETWORKING
When you’re walking or running on a treadmill, always do so at an incline for maximum effect – and to prevent injury. At zero percent incline, most treadmills actually have the effect of sloping downwards, which can be difficult on the knees and other joints. Setting the incline to 1 percent mimics walking on a flat surface. For extra intensity, raise the incline to 8 percent or higher to replicate walking up a steep hill. You’ll burn more calories and get an awesome lower body workout!
