My friend, Franklin Adderley, Chief of the Fort Lauderdale police, who I am suing by the way (I sue all my friends for the hell of it) has started a twitter account for the FLPD, if you want to access it, so you can hear about how someone is breaking into your car while you were at work. It’s @FLPD411. The lawsuit, that is SFGN vs. FLPD is for abridging the rights of photographers during the filming of a movie in the city. A hearing is set for next month. Follow me on twitter if you want a dose of daily sardonic, sarcastic, humorous view of the universe @normkent. It is a sobering thought that most of the porn stars I represent have more followers than I do, but then they have better bodies, too. I just have the mind of Jack Kerouac. The Fort Lauderdale Film Fest opened this week with a gala at the Signature Grand. I was looking forward to chatting with honoree Senator George McGovern, the 1972 Democratic Presidential candidate, whose campaign I worked on as a student at Hofstra University. Sadly, he took ill after arriving in Fort Lauderdale, and had to return home. Wishing him the best. ‘Dreaming American’ is amongst the LGBT films showing at The Manor on November 6. Finally, and I don’t have all the information yet, we have to report to you that the marvelous event at the Sunshine Cathedral, Bravissimo, has been temporarily postponed until a later date. Still, there is The Taste of the Island coming up on November 7 at Richardson Park in Wilton Manors. Get there early.

Pridelines Youth Services Holds Suicide Vigil VIEWS OF THE NEWS
By Paul Domenick
P
ridelines Youth Services had their 2nd annual suicide-prevention vigil for LGBTQ youths who struggle with issues related to suicide. The group met last week at Miami Beach Community Church. According to a 2010 Task Force report, LGBTQ youths are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual counterparts. This is why Pridelines develops programs to empower LGBTQ youth. It is the only organization in South Florida that provides services exclusively to these youths. The brainchild behind the suicide vigil is Alex Febres. Febres, 20, was teased and bullied in high school. “I needed something like Pridelines, and this is my way of giving back,” he said. “With suicide, everyone is affected. It’s a chain reaction that effects everyone in its wake.” Febres also mentions why everyone in the organization was wearing purple at the event. “Purple unifies us. It signals to other youths that there are a lot of people here for them.” Rose Fryer and Sean Oliver arrived to the event early. Fryer’s son was found dead in his New York City apartment at the age of 25. His death is still considered “unknown,” although Fryer suspects he died as a result of his sexuality. This vigil comes on the heels of the recent suicide of Jamey Rodenmeyer of Buffalo, New York. Rodenmeyer was a 14-year-old boy who blogged about being suicidal due to being incessantly bullied at school. He was found dead outside his home in an apparent suicide. Rodenmeyer regularly posted about being bullied at school and how people would launch gay insults at him. As the crowd burgeoned at Pridelines’s vigil, the diversity of the participants widened. Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians and Gays, was also present. At around 7:30 p.m., people lit up their candles, held up signs, and walked peacefully down the whole stretch of Lincoln Road. Once at the end, Jessica Lam, Pridelines Program Facilitator, made the observation that “thousands of people have now been touched by us tonight and our message. Just think how many others would be touched by this issue if others did the same.”

Taste of the Island Returns to Wilton Manors
By Brian Swinford
S
hirley Nolen has brought the community together for 6 years with her signature event Taste of the Island. The event is held at the beautiful Historical Richardson Park located on Wilton Drive in the heart of Wilton Manors. This event will have more than 37 food venders and 10 different wine stations. Some of the food vendors will be The Brickyard, Morton Steakhouse, and a few of the new restaurant supporters here in Wilton Manors, like The Rodeo restaurant, and The Manor Complex. There is going to be loads of seating under the pavilion and beautiful trees of the park. This year the Taste of the Island has three times the amount of community sponsors as previous years, like Barton & Miller, Kalis & McIntee Funeral Home, and Arbor Animal Hospital. Also with some of the bigger company sponsors like Sysco, Whole Foods, and even Waste Management this event will be one to remember. SFGN is helping to sponsor the best dressed table at the event, which we will give free advertising to the top three tables. All of the money from the Taste of The Island will be divided between four charities, The Historic Society, Main Street, Leisure Services, and Kiwanis Club. There will be plenty of parking at Richardson Park and also near Out of The Closet at Hagen park. Bring the whole family to this great community based event.

Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure Foundation’s inaugural fundraiser at Sidelines Sport Bar in Wilton Manors Oct. 7-9. The themed events included local business owners punching it out with large balloon like boxing gloves; mock boxing matches with drag queens; and bartenders, servers and staff from local restaurants demonstrating their boxing prowess, duking it out for a $10 donation. “We had the MC from L ps hosting the event, had a silent auction, had sponsorsh ps from Mount Gay Rum and Budweiser, and the 5-star Marriott Harbor Beach even gave away a 3 day 2 night stay through our raffle and silent auction,” says Debbi Burke, an organizer of the event.
of the approval process” that Zizzo, along with her friends Pamela Dodsen, Debbie Weisinger, and Debbi Burke, decided to be pro-active in attempting to ensure that this would never have to affect the treatment of another woman or man with breast cancer again. The fruits of their brainstorming gave rise to the newly formed “Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure Foundation,” and they enlisted of Dr. Rod Hurt as the foundation’s medical advisor. Debbi Burke, (Zizzo’s former partner of nine years and co-owner of Art Frenzie) who sits on the board of directors and helped organize the foundation’s first official fundraising event, says the response from the Wilton Manors community was overwhelming. A local bar, Sidelines Sports Bar, hosted the foundation’s inaugural event earlier this month and raised nearly $4,200. “We had six to eight hundred people show up despite terrible weather and had themes each night that drew different crowds and really demonstrated the communities’ support for our cause,” Burke says. Zizzo, though still recovering from surgery, and limited in mobility, even made an appearance for the ribbon cutting ceremony. As for Zizzo’s surgery, she seemed well on the road to recovery until two to three
weeks later when she developed an infection in her new breasts. Under the knife she went again last month to have her implants removed and she is continuing her recovery, as of print, at her home just outside of Wilton Manors. In the end, though, despite two major surgeries in nearly as many weeks, she downplays the difficulty of her recovery and seems to completely disregard her own healing process. She said she will “make it through based on the power of her will alone.” Instead, she concludes thinking only about the others whom she hopes to help avoid the struggles she’s undergone. “My hope, and the reason I started this foundation, is so that women and men, gay and straight alike, can have the opportunity to have not just these procedures done in a timely manner and not have to wait for all kinds of approvals but so they can have the funds available to them and not have to worry about all the red tape I went through to get the help they need.” More information on the foundation can be found on the Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure Foundation’s official Facebook page. Religious Liberty on Trial By Lisa Keen
Keen News Service
T
he ACLU called it “one of the most important religious liberty cases in years” and said the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the matter would determine whether religious organizations have “the right to discriminate based on non-religious grounds.” The case is Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and it was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on October 5. Hosanna-Tabor school, in Redford, Michigan, describes itself as a “Christian day school” with grades Kindergarten through 8. Their appeal is the latest clash between the free exercise and Establishment clauses of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and federal statutes seeking to bar discrimination. Heretofore, that clash has had mixed re-

sults for LGBT people. The most notorious of losses came in 2000 with Boy Scouts of America v. Dale. In that decision, a majority ruled the Boy Scouts had a First Amendment right to expect its belief that homosexuality is not “morally straight” trumps the state of New Jersey’s human rights law prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination. But just last year, the high court, in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, ruled that a public school’s nondiscrimination policy, which prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation, was “a reasonable, viewpoint-neutral condition” for use of the school’s facilities by student groups, including religious-oriented student groups that discriminated against gay students. In Hosanna-Tabor, the court is deliberating over “where to draw the line” between religious exercise and federal employment laws prohibiting discrimination. “The courts of appeals agree that there is a

ministerial exception to employment-law litigation,” argued attorneys for Hosanna-Tabor, in their petition to the high court. “They agree that it extends beyond pastors, priests, and rabbis, but not as far as janitors or secretaries. The question is where to draw the line.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which pressed a discrimination case against Hosanna-Tabor on behalf of a female employee of the school, agrees that courts “have held that clergy members generally cannot bring claims under the federal employment discrimination laws, including Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Equal Pay Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.” “This ‘ministerial exception,’” says EEOC, “comes not from the text of the statutes, but from the First Amendment principle that governmental regulation of church administration, including the appointment of clergy, impedes the free exercise of religion and constitutes impermissible government entanglement with church authority.” But the exception, says EEOC, “applies only to employees who perform essentially religious functions, namely those whose primary duties consist of engaging in church governance, supervising a religious order, or conducting religious ritual, worship, or instruction.” And in this discrimination case, says EEOC, the female employee, Cheryl Perich, was a teacher of math, language arts, social studies, science, gym, art, and music “using secular textbooks” and “seldom introduc[ing] religion during secular discussions.” Conservative attorney Ed Whelan has called the Obama administration’s “hostility to the ministerial exemption in the Hosan-
na-Tabor case is part and parcel of a broader ideological agenda that would have gay causes trump religious liberty.” Interestingly, Lambda Legal Defense, the preeminent national LGBT legal group in the country, did not see the case as important to its going concerns and did not file a brief. “We did not file a brief in this case, as it largely presents a matter of statutory interpretation regarding statutes that do not protect against sexual orientation or gender identity discrimination,” said Jon Davidson, Lambda’s national legal director. Davidson acknowledged that a expanded reading of “ministerial exception” could help religious institutions discriminated based on sexual orientation and gender identity, should those categories of discrimination ever be prohibited by federal law. But the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a bill proposing to outlaw employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, “likely will have its own language” with religious exemptions, said Davidson. The ACLU, which did file a brief, agreed with the EEOC, saying the “ministerial exception should not apply to discriminatory decisions that have nothing to do with religious doctrine.” It complained that courts “have extended the [ministerial] exception far beyond what is required by the Religion Clauses.” “They have converted the ministerial exception into a shield for all forms of discrimination and retaliation, regardless of motivation,” said the ACLU brief. “And they have prevented judicial redress of even the most flagrant racial or sexual harassment, even when motivated by naked animus unrelated to any religious belief.”

By Staff of Southern Poverty Law Center
T
he Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and Truth Wins Out (TWO) launched a national campaign today targeting conversion therapy, a thriving practice that claims to “convert” people from homosexuality to heterosexuality. The groups made the announcement in coordination with today’s National Coming Out Day. The campaign will begin with a series of community meetings in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., for survivors of the practice, which has been discredited or highly criticized by virtually all major American medical, psychiatric, psychological and professional counseling organizations. Survivors are also invited to share their own stories. The campaign also will encourage community advocates and elected leaders to scrutinize local conversion therapy programs. “Conversion therapy programs have devastated all too many lives and families by attempting to change a person’s sexual orientation,” said Christine Sun, deputy legal director, who leads the SPLC’s LGBT rights project. “This practice is based on nothing more than junk science and must stop.” Wayne Besen, founder and executive director of Truth Wins Out, added, “There’s a serious concern that the damage inflicted by conversion therapy can reach far beyond the individual receiving the ‘therapy’ and into communities across the country.” Central to conversion therapy sometimes known as reparative or “sexual reorientation” therapy is the belief that being gay is a mental disorder a position rejected by the American Psychiatric Association nearly four decades ago. People who have undergone conversion therapy have reported increased anxiety, depression, and in some cases, suicidal ideation. Despite these findings, the conversion therapy movement continues to push its message and is increasingly targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, often recommending that parents commit their children to treatment against the child’s wishes. The American Medical Association officially “opposes the use of ‘reparative’ or
‘conversion’ therapy that is based on the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her homosexual orientation.” In 2006, the American Psychological Association declared: “There is simply no sufficiently scientifically sound evidence that sexual orientation can be changed.” Yet the message that LGBTQ people can and should change their sexual orientation is echoed throughout the literature promoting conversion therapy: “Anyone who experiences SSA [same-sex attraction] is not ‘gay,’ ‘lesbian,’ ‘bisexual,’ or ‘transgender.’ They are all latent heterosexuals!” “Self-deception about gender is at the heart of the homosexual condition. A child who imagines that he or she can be the opposite sex or be both sexes is holding on to a fantasy solution to his or her confusion.
This is a revolt against reality and a rebellion against the limits built into our created human natures.” Absurd theories and treatments also are promoted within the conversion therapy movement: “The penis is the essential symbol of masculinity the unmistakable difference between male and female. This undeniable anatomical difference should be emphasized to the boy in therapy.” “The family model that produces a homosexual son has, in our view, typically failed to validate the boy’s masculine individuation during the formative phase of gender identification.” There are other troubling aspects of this practice. The American Psychological Association expressed concern in 2006 that the positions espoused by some of the leading advocates of conversion therapy, such as the National Association for Research &

Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), “create an environment in which prejudice and discrimination can flourish.” The potential for conversion therapy to foster an anti-LGBT atmosphere is a concern for the SPLC, which analyzed 14 years of federal hate crime data and found that LGBT people are far more likely to be victims of a violent hate crime than any other minority group in the United States. The SPLC also has worked to combat anti-gay bullying in schools.

T
wo new studies have shown what many have long understood. That some human males are aroused by both men and women. Both studies refute previous research on male bisexuality. The first study, entitled “Sexual Arousal Patterns of Bisexual Men Revisited” was recently published in the journal Biological Psychology. The study recruited 100 self-professed bisexual, heterosexual and homosexual men. All 3 groups of the men watched straight and gay sex videos. While watching the videos their genital responses were monitored with sensors. Subjective responses also measured how much the men liked or disliked the videos as they watched them. The results showed that the bisexual men in the study were physically aroused by videos of men having sex with men and women having sex with women. The other study, published in Archives of Sexual Behavior last Spring, used a slightly different approach to validate the existence of male human bisexuality. That study of bisexual, heterosexual and homosexual men also monitored the physical and subjective arousal effects from watching adult movies. But it included a movie of men having sex with both a women and another man. This “bisexual stimuli” as the researchers called it, depicted a woman and man fondling each other while both fellating another man, vaginal intercourse, and male on male anal intercourse. The movie had a greater arousal effect on the bisexual men than on the heterosexual and homosexual men in the study. Both the new studies contradict the findings of similar research which questioned whether some men can be aroused, or turned on, by both sexes. That controversial study, “Sexual Arousal Patterns of Bisexual Men” was published in 2005. Michael Bailey, a researcher on that study infamously told the press at the time, “I’m not denying that bisexual behavior exists, but I am saying that in men there’s no hint that true bisexual arousal exists.” Many regarded that research as flawed be-
cause it may have studied self-professed bisexual male participants who were not actually bisexual. The researchers on that 2005 study, including Michael Bailey, now agree. “The bisexual samples of previous studies may have been populated by men who had never or rarely behaved bisexually and perhaps identified as bisexual for reasons other than strong arousal to both sexes,” the researchers now claim. The two newer studies used different recruitment criteria to increase the probability of finding men who were bisexually aroused rather than those who identified as being bisexual for other reasons. These included on-line recruitment from websites serving bisexuals. The men in the “Bisexual Men Revisited” study also had to have had sexual relations with two people of each sex as well as have been in a 3-month relationship with one person of each sex. The new studies even used the famous 1948 Alfred Kinsey 0-6 scale in their research to help pinpoint and define bisexuality. In that scale, 0 means exclusively heterosexual, 6 exclusively homosexual, with varying degrees of bisexuality in between. Despite proving that some study participants were in fact bisexual, the researchers believe that there are likely sexual preference variables that go beyond Kinsey’s original scale. Yet the new studies still pay homage to Kinsey’s landmark research of long-ago. “It appears that some men may identify as bisexual because they are sexually aroused by both sexes, even if they experience considerable more arousal to one sex than the other,” the researchers wrote. The new studies also suggest that bisexual preference variables are within a continuum that may change somewhat depending on time, mood and other circumstances. “Men with bisexual arousal patterns may experience temporal fluctuations in their attractions and arousal to men and to women,” one study concluded. “Thus, a bisexual man may be more aroused by male stimuli at one time point but by female stimuli at another time point.” Healthylivingnews.org is an LGBTQ community health news service that partners with SFGN.

McNaught’s Notes Out & Equal at a recent Workplace Summit
Imagine a World with No Bullying, No Discrimination
T
he LGBT people of the world will number 900 million by 2050. Because of all of the hard work that has been done by their Baby Boomer LGBT great, great aunts and uncles, the majority of them will live full and happy lives, free of most forms of discrimination. But, like their straight sisters and brothers, they will worry about hunger and thirst. When I was born, there were 2 billion people living on our planet. Today there are 7 billion. In just fourteen years there will be 8 billion, and by 2050 there will be 9 billion. With apologies to our youth, there isn’t going to be enough food and fresh water for our children or grandchildren when they are born. Seventy percent of our planet is covered in water, but only one percent is accessible. The growth in food production has been cut in half since 1990. Do the math. It’s my hope that some brilliant, gay and transgender people will solve the water
and food problem for the rest of civilization. Living in a world that doesn’t make them expend so much energy hiding who they are, our best and brightest will have the freedom to focus on the major problems that face the world’s population, rather than devoting their lives to stopping bullying and marriage discrimination. In a week, I’m going to receive a “lifetime achievement” award at the annual Out and Equal Workplace conference. Called the Selisse Berry Leadership Award in honor of the organization’s founding executive director, it cites individuals for their dedicated work for equality in the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. I’m thrilled to receive this honor, particularly since it has only been given once before, and that was to Selisse Berry. I could die today feeling quite fulfilled by my life of service as an educator on these issues. In my acceptance speech, I plan to thank the Catholic Church

for firing me in 1974 for being gay. If they hadn’t, I wouldn’t be writing this. But what if I hadn’t been fired in 1974 for being gay? What if there was no job discrimination against gay people then? What if heterosexual people didn’t feel so threatened by homosexual men and women? What other things might I have accomplished if I hadn’t been required by cultural discrimination to spend nearly 40 years completely focused on creating a world in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people felt safe and valued? Sometimes, while watching television or reading a book, I wonder what my life might have been like if I had been a doctor or a
lawyer. I fashion myself saving lives with a scalpel, or with my ability to cite legal precedent. I wouldn’t want to actually change my real life for my fantasies, but I wish I had been given the freedom to decide for myself, instead of having the decision made for me by the newspaper editor who was instructed by the bishop to fire me because I had come out as gay. What if we were able to completely eliminate bullying and other forms of discrimination in the grade schools, high schools, colleges, workplaces, and more importantly, in the homes of today’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth? What might all of those children do with all of the time and energy they now must put into hiding who they are? What wonderful, creative, and useful things might they do for the world without all of the stress? When we allow bullies among the social conservatives to make us spend our money and time in public campaigns about marriage equality or high school curriculums, rather than on solving the truly serious problems facing the people on this planet, we forfeit the quality of life of our descendants. Forty years from now, when even individual states of the United States are fighting over food and water, someone will ask, “What were people doing about these problems fifty years ago when they knew there would be shortages?” How embarrassing it will be for us to have it said, “They were spending billions of dollars fighting one another over whether gay and lesbian people could get married.” With a fresh glass of water, let’s toast to the end of discrimination against our youth. Brian McNaught was named “the godfather of gay diversity training” by The New York Times. He works with corporate executives globally, is the author of six books, and is featured in seven educational DVDs. He and his spouse Ray Struble divide their year between Ft. History Month LGBT Roots Showcased in New River Exhibit
By Michelle Williams
Director, Southeast Region, Florida Public ArchaeologyNetwork at FAU
T
he Florida Public Archaeology Network and Florida Atlantic University are hosting an exhibit and a run/walk to commemorate Fort Lauderdale’s 100th anniversary. The “Then & Now: Life along the New River” exhibit is a celebration of Fort Lauderdale’s rich past, told through the stories of those who lived along the banks of New River. The “Dash Through the Past” is a 2.5-mile run/walk with historically themed photo challenges through downtown Ft. Lauderdale.
The New River is a center of art and commerce, which flows through the cultural heart of Ft. Lauderdale. This verdant river has served people for thousands of years as a causeway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Everglades. Our exhibit is a celebration of the history and prehistory of the Ft. Lauderdale area and the people that made it. We developed this free exhibit centering on themes of historical and archaeological heritage of the
New River as Ft. Lauderdale celebrates its Centennial. Topics will include the archaeological record of Ft. Lauderdale and the role that diverse cultures (prehistoric Tequesta tribes, Seminole Indians, African American founders, GLBT tourists, and others) had in the city’s development. The story of these diverse people living on the river will be told through their cultural traditions. At the center of the exhibit we will showcase a prehistoric canoe, a historic canoe, and modern paddleboard. These watercrafts are essential to the exhibit because they reveal how the New River was explored, used, and enjoyed by people from a range of time periods and cultures. In this way boat building is a unifying artistic tradition linking people to the river. The exhibit will be in the Second Avenue Studio at FAU – Askew Tower in downtown Ft. Lauderdale (220 SE 2nd Ave). The exhibit opens November 1 and runs through December 16. Gallery hours will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and

Abraham Lincoln
A life in the closet? By Mark Segal

A
braham Lincoln (1809-65) may likely be the most studied and researched of the United States presidents. The first reference to him possibly being “homosexual” came from notable Lincoln expert Carl Sandburg in his 1926 biography, “Abraham Lincoln: The War Years.” In describing the early relationship between Lincoln and his close friend, Joshua Fry Speed, Sandburg wrote “a streak of lavender, and spots soft as May violets.” This line got historians talking about an issue from which many had previously shied away. Still, the biography was written in the early 20th century, a time when such topics were only discussed in whispers. But by including the line, Sandburg felt the relationship
deserved acknowledgement. It wasn’t until 2005 when the first book was published on Lincoln’s relationships with men, C.A. Tripp’s “The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln.” Detractors of Lincoln’s possible homosexuality, such as historian David Herbert Donald, often say there is no new evidence on Lincoln.Yet historians continue to draw fresh conclusions from Lincoln’s letters. Those who attempt to refute Lincoln’s possible “homosexuality” usually focus on one particular incident — of the many — that supports the theory: his relationship with Speed. Yet history, like everything else, is open to interpretation and influenced by new findings. Bias also motivated the retelling of historical events. The best example of bias in American history is the story of Thomas Jefferson and his slave/concubine
Sally Hemings, which was not accepted as a truthful account until 1998 — and only after DNA proof. African-American citizens — not historians — led the effort to give Hemings her rightful place in history. Likewise with Lincoln, most historians have referred to isolated facts rather than the pattern of events in his life to tell his personal story. Will history once again prove historians wrong?
THE POEM I will tell you a Joke about Jewel and Mary It is neither a Joke nor a Story For Rubin and Charles has married two girls But Billy has married a boy The girlies he had tried on every Side But none could he get to agree All was in vain he went home again And since that is married to Natty So Billy and Natty agreed very well And mama’s well pleased at the match The egg it is laid but Natty’s afraid The Shell is So Soft that it never will hatch But Betsy she said you Cursed bald head My Suitor you never Can be Beside your low crotch proclaims you a botch And that never Can answer for me This poem, about a boy marrying a boy, is thought to be the first reference to gay marriage in U.S. history. A 20-year-old man in rural Indiana wrote it 182 years ago. That young man was Abraham Lincoln. Most historians agree Lincoln wrote the poem as a joke or rebuttal to the lack of an invitation to a friend’s wedding, but how a backwoodsman conceives a boy-marriesboy poem in 1829 remains a question. The poem was included in the first major biography of Lincoln, written by his law partner, William Herndon. Revisionists omitted it in subsequent editions. It didn’t reappear in Herndon’s edition until the 1940s.
BILLY GREENE In 1830, when Lincoln’s family moved to Coles County, Ill., he headed out on his own. At age 22, he settled in New Salem, Ill., where he met Billy Greene — and, as Greene told Herndon, the two “shared a narrow bed. When one turned over the

other had to do likewise.” Greene was so close to Lincoln at that time that he could describe Lincoln’s physique. However, Lincoln was poor at the time and it was not unusual for men in poverty to share a bed.
JOSHUA FRY SPEED In 1837, Lincoln moved to Springfield, Ill., to practice law and enter politics. That’s where he met the two men who would be his greatest friends throughout his life. One, Joshua Fry Speed, became his bed partner for a while; the other was law partner Herndon. Beyond the revelation that Lincoln and Speed had an intimate friendship, little has been written about how diligently Speed worked for Lincoln’s legal and political career. Speed’s name popped up in many of Lincoln’s legal filings and on the Illinois Whig Party’s central committee. The two were almost inseparable. Most Lincoln historians agree this relationship was the strongest and most intimate of the president’s life. What they don’t agree on is why they slept in the same bed together for four years when they had the space and means to sleep separately, as was expected of men their age. Benjamin Franklin
Writer, inventor, statesman and friend to gays By Victoria A. Brownworth

here is no more fascinating character among the Founding Fathers than Benjamin Franklin. An intellectual powerhouse credited with an extraordinary number of inventions and writings, he also was one of the three most pivotal players in the solidifying of the new colonial government, along with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Historian Walter Isaacson, author of the definitive biography of Franklin, described him as “the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become.” It was Franklin who edited the Declaration of Independence as Jefferson wrote it, making significant changes, which altered the course of history. (For example, Jefferson had originally written “we hold these truths to be Sacred,” but Franklin altered that to read “self-evident” because, he argued with Jefferson, the new democracy could not be predicated on the old divine right of kings, like the monarchy they had just won freedom from. Thus “self-evident” — coming from the people, not “Sacred,” coming via a kingly conduit to God.) Franklin was also a statesman, having been Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly and President of Pennsylvania — a position equivalent to governor, today. Franklin was also known as the great communicator among the major players in the colonial era. His joie de vivre and sense of humor ingratiated him with everyone, which is why he became the primary diplomat from the colonies, an ambassador to the French and Prussian courts and U.S. minister to both France and Sweden. In
each capacity he negotiated treaties and opened communication between supporters in Europe and the colonies. It was in his role as ambassador to France that Franklin also became the nation’s first gay-friendly ambassador, helping a known homosexual escape prosecution and become a pivotal figure in the American Revolution. Identifying Franklin’s most pivotal role in colonial America is impossible as there was no arena in which he was not essential, as Isaacson’s biography makes clear. But certainly Franklin’s most significant role in relationship to the American Revolution and the propitious outcome of the Revolutionary War was his delivery of Baron Friedrich von Steuben from the French court at Paris to George Washington at Valley Forge. Washington himself felt that von Steuben’s military strategies were vital to his success in the war; von Steuben’s expertise was so stellar his military manual, “Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States,” became the fundamental guide for the Continental Army and remained in active use through the War of 1812, being published in over 70 editions. Had it not been for Franklin, however, Washington would never have gotten his military strategist and von Steuben may have spent the remainder of his life in prison somewhere in Europe. At the lead-in of the Revolution, Franklin was a mediator between the French and the colonists in negotiating the support of France against the British. It was during this period of intense political complexity and foment that von Steuben was first approached. Franklin knew of von Steuben’s homosexual encounters, but didn’t consider them relevant to a position in Washington’s Continental Army. In June 1777, rumors of homosexual activity had forced von Steuben

to resign his role as chamberlain to Prince Joseph Friedrich Wilhelm of HohenzollernHechige, in southern Germany.Von Steuben travelled to Paris — some say fled — seeking a position in the French army or the Continental Army, through American military representatives like Franklin. Washington had sought a military strategist, but had insisted on someone who spoke fluent English.Von Steuben spoke German and French and very little English, so Franklin was initially leary of recommending him to Washington. But — and this is where Franklin’s gayfriendly attitude is most obvious — Franklin had empathy for von Steuben’s increasingly problematic circumstances and decided to write letters of recommendation to Washington and bring von Steuben to America. These letters of recommendation came im-
mediately following a crisis for von Steuben. Having first rejected a non-paid position offered by Franklin, von Steuben found himself in danger of being prosecuted. A letter dated August 13, 1777 to the Prince for whom von Steuben had been chamberlain threatened von Steuben: “It has come to me from different sources that M. de Steuben is accused of having taken familiarities with young boys which the laws forbid and punish severely. I have even been informed that that is the reason why M. de Steuben was obliged to leave Hechingen and that the clergy of your country intend to prosecute him by law as soon as he may establish himself anywhere.” For the complete article, go to: sfgn.com/franklin

Most of my free time is spent helping others in Alcoholics Anonymous. Life is rich but not terribly complicated.” – William,West Palm Beach “I came out to my family when I was sixteen. They, of course, hauled me off to the psychiatrist. I went in first and had a lovely fifteen-minute conversation with him about me, my feelings, my fears, my sexuality, etc. Then he asked me to sit in the waiting room while he spoke privately with my parents. I went out; they went in. After about thirty minutes, they emerged—he strolling, she storming—and home we went. Silence in the car, so after about ten minutes I asked what the good doctor had said. Slow Burn Theatre Presents

The Rocky Horror Show in West Boca

M
y first experience of Rocky Horror—I was fifteen years old and drunk at an art house movie theater. The nuns at my Catholic high school would not have wanted me to know about men who dress in corsets and high heels. And they definitely would not have approved of my lesbian crush on a girl named Magenta. Oh well. For the past thirty-six years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been playing at midnight film screenings and corrupting young minds in the best ways possible. It’s your typical love story: boy and girl meet bisexual cross-dresser. Fishnet stockings are involved. Choreographed dances, catchy tunes— what’s not to love? But did you know that Rocky Horror started out on the stage as a work of musical theatre? This October, Halloween came early as the Slow Burn Theatre in Boca kicked off their 2011-2012 Season this past weekend with the original Broadway musical produc-

tion of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There are still three performances left this weekend: Friday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. and midnight. Last year at this time, Slow Burn Theatre premiered Rocky Horror to enthusiastic audiences and critics. Matthew Korinko, CoArtistic Director, recalls how they prepared for that first run of performances: “We had no idea what to expect as far as audience responses, so we invited ‘pros’ from the area who run the midnight showings of [Rocky Horror]…to come to our dress rehearsals and shout everything they could at us. It really prepared us for just about anything.” However, Korinko admits a few valuable lessons were learned during the production: “One night we incorrectly coached the audience to…[shout the obligatory ‘asshole!’ and ‘slut!’ whenever they heard the names] ‘Brad’ and ‘Janet’… when they should have only responded to the full names ‘Brad Majors’ and ‘Janet Weiss. Made for a long night…but it was still a blast.” The exchange between the audience and performers is what makes for great theater. As Korinko attests “some of the best audience responses… were reactions to our cast’s willingness to push the boundaries… Wild laughter or…shocked groans [were] as common as the standard shout outs.
22
Audiences really got into the fact that it’s all live—[that’s] an energy you just can’t get from a movie… your energy has an effect on the show.” One of the reasons for bringing back the time warp to Slow Burn Theatre was “the amazing audience response.” Korinko recalls how “the week after we closed last year… we were already getting calls asking when we were doing it again.” Why does Rocky Horror continue to attract an audience? “Everyone has a different reason for liking [the show],” says Korinko. “But for me, it’s because it’s unashamed, unapologetic, liberating and just plain fun. It’s an escape for everyone involved.” This Slow Burn Theatre production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be set aside (temporarily) after this year—so get your tickets now and be liberated. P
alm Beach Dramaworks, West Palm Beach’s only resident professional theatre, will host a gala grand opening November 11, as it launches its 12th season and takes up residence in the newly renovated space at 201 Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach “It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the inaugural season of our new Clematis Street theatre,” said William Hayes, Producing Artistic Director. “The larger venue affords us the opportunity to expand our artistic horizons, while staying true to our mission of presenting timeless classic and contemporary plays and Theater to Think About. All My Sons (the inaugural production) and The Pitmen Painters could not have been staged in our small venue.” According to media releases, the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) purchased the Cuillo space in 2010 and is leasing it to Palm Beach Dramaworks on a long-term basis. At the time the partnership was announced last October, Hayes was quoted as saying, “This is a landmark occasion for our thriving organization, and we are grateful for the City’s firm commitment and dedication to the Arts, recognizing it as a vital component to the economic and social health of our community. For nearly five years, we’ve worked in tandem with City officials to locate a new home for our growing organization.” Unlike the Dramaworks’ old location which theater-goers will remember was tucked away in a renovated office space at
322 Banyan Street with seating for about 80 people, the new space commands visibility at the downtown gateway to the waterfront and theater management anticipates new patrons and walk-in traffic will quickly help the regulars fill the new seats. The renovations in the new space include a reconfigured auditorium chamber with 218 seats, down from the Cuillo’s 377 but twice the number of the Banyan Street house. There’s a multi-use black box theatre space and newly designed administration offices and a costume shop. A new lobby bar will feature gourmet snacks, coffee, beer and wine for theater-goers. Dramaworks also hosts a Master Playwright Series “examining the life, work and contributions of the world’s great playwrights. Every season three playwrights are examined, with two segments devoted to each playwright. When he’s not directing, Rogow still has his hands full. Rising Action’s finances and organization are still weak and he must find a new home for the company at the end of this run as the Sunshine Cathedral, the company’s home for the last year, reclaims use of its fellowship hall. Rogow is looking at warehouse spaces in Fort Lauderdale and has even approached the city of Wilton Manors about use of a city facility in the hopes of bringing Rising Action closer to its regulars. He insists, “Things are going in the right direction. The quality of the productions is better and we’re attracting talent that is serious and professional. Hopefully soon we’ll find a new home where we can continue to grow.” For a seasoned theater professional like Rogow, that will be the biggest thrill of all.

he Miami City Ballet opened its season last weekend at the Arsht Center with a modern program marked by minimalist music and mixed metaphors. Artistic Director Edward Villella, long a champion of his mentor George Balanchine, chose “Square Dance,” the master’s modernist interpretation of the traditional folk dance to open Program I. Set to music by Baroque composers Antonio Vivaldi and Arcangelo Corelli, the work seemed more an ode to the formal courtly dances of the period—allemandes, gavottes and minuets— than the “do-si-do” found in square dances. The music of the orchestra, ably conducted by Gary Sheldon, was punctuated throughout with the percussive rhythms of the ballerinas’ toe shoes, a striking contrast to the lilting strings. Sleek white and cool grey leotards accentuated the contemporary interpretation, along with stark lighting designed by John Hall. “Afternoon of the Faun,” a pas de deux featuring Patricia Delgado and Yann Trividic,

followed. Set to Claude Debussy’s lush impressionistic score, this ballet by Jerome Robbins, is surprising stark, set in an empty dance studio, inspired by an encounter had with a young student at the School of American Ballet,Villella himself. Delgado is entrancing, a muse to Trividic who enters and exits, leaving the dancer curled in a ball on the dance floor. The mystical music of contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Part sets the tone for “Liturgy,” another pas de deux, this time featuring Katia Carranza and Isanusi GarciaRodriguez. Choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, a critically-acclaimed young talent, “Liturgy” is a haunting ballet, calling on the hints of exotic Asian rhythms in Part’s music to suggest a spiritual moment between the dancers. Initially shadowing Carranza’s Balinese-inspired movements, Garcia-Rodriguez then engages his partner in a series of interlocking forms and effortless lifts that had the audience enthralled in a seemingly religious moment. The program concluded with Twyla Tharp’s

Minimalism and Mixed Metaphors Abound in Ballet’s Opening
Miami City Ballet’s Program I includes Square Dance (Balanchine/Vivaldi and Corelli), Afternoon of a Faun (Robbins/Debussy), Liturgy (Wheeldon/Pärt) and In The Upper Room (Tharp/Glass)
“In the Upper Room,” a series of vignettes set to the incessant minimalist rhythms and bombastic blasts of Philip Glass. In the notes to her ballet, Tharp references two ceramic Chinese temple dogs guarding the entrance, several “stompers” and a “bomb squad.” The narrative is really not indicative of any real narrative as the stage seems to freely undulate with non-stop movement, a cacophony of joyous, athletic movement that is as tiring to watch as it undoubtedly is to dance.
Hall’s lighting and effects are crucial to the magic of the work as dancers enter and exit the stage through dark clouds of smoke. “In the Upper Room” may not appeal to every dance lover. The music is abstract and Tharp’s choreography is frenetic and overwhelming, but the roar of applause at the conclusion signaled the audience’s appreciation for the athleticism and endurance displayed by the dancers.

CYNDI SHINES
By Chris Azzopardi
T
wenty-five years ago, Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” shined through – on the radio, and in the hearts of so many. It was in the midst of the horrifying AIDS epidemic when she lost her dear gay friend, came across the song, and made it into a hit that comforted millions. “I was very much in mourning,” the 58-year-old icon recalls of the chart-topper, the title track from her 1986 album, in our recent chat. “I was sad and I wanted to be able to do something. He wanted me to sing a song for him, and I had written one (“Boy Blue”). That didn’t work out too good, because I wrote about my feelings – which were big.” But “True Colors,” originally written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly for Anne Murray, spoke to her. Years later, it’s not just a song; it’s an anthem for everything that Lauper – a selfless, admirable activist for the community – stands for. As part of her True Colors Fund, she launched a project last year, the Give a Damn Campaign, to create awareness of LGBT discrimination
your teeth. The video – and “all my friends and family that showed up in the video with me” – is what she remembers most. There was also “We Are the World,” the all-star charity single – a monster one, at that – featuring Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Lauper. Her fondest memory: “That I walked in with almost the same jacket that Michael had on, and I changed it really quick. But I was upset anyway because I had the flakes in my hair, because I was doing that performance-art piece for the American Music Awards and didn’t have time to clean up. I was having a moment.” In the next three decades, Lauper would have many more moments. She would win Grammys. Have a son. Sing to a disgruntled group of flyers at an airline terminal. Flub the “Star-Spangled Banner,” and gracefully recover from it, as she did recently before the US Open just this past September. Looking back, what would she have told her younger, more “unusual” self? “I know I said all the wrong things to the right people,” she laughs, “but probably not listen all the time to everything everybody told me. That there was a bigger world out there.” For the complete article, go to: sfgn.com/cyndi

After all these years, singer/activist isn’t so unusual – she’s just human
kind in New York – happen. Her manager, Lisa Barbaris, is one of them, along with the West End Intergenerational Residence, a non-profit focused on providing housing for homeless families and the elderly. “I was the famous person there, but a lot of people did a lot of work,” she says of the shelter’s official opening in September. “I was just the one who cut the ribbon. It’s an interesting project because it’s a low-income housing project, which makes it work on so many other levels. It’s kind of fabulous.” Same could be said for Lauper’s career, officially launching in the early ’80s – during an out-of-control house party that had the singer persuading her parents to whoop it up, all for a little single called “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” off her 1983 debut She’s So Unusual – as the New Yorker shot to superstardom instantly with funky-punky sunburst hair (one of many colors we’d see throughout the decade) and her outrageous fashion sense. She, like Madonna, was Gaga before we knew she existed. Lauper had the eccentricity, and she certainly had the hits. There was the sweet charm of got-yourback ballad “Time After Time,” a song still in heavy rotation nearly 30 years later. “A magical time,” she calls it now. “She Bop” blasted myths of masturbation, promoting it as something just as routine as brushing
with the help of high-profile celebrities; many of them heterosexual. “In any civil rights movement, you need everybody,” Lauper says with heartfelt indignation. “That’s how you win.You need your straight allies.” She had them on the tour, also named after the song, which ran for two years and featured Debbie Harry, Margaret Cho, The B-52s and Erasure. Now, Lauper’s showing her support with a shelter, recently opened in Central Harlem, to offer supportive housing for LGBT youth without any place to go, who may have been thrown out of their own homes. A mother herself, Lauper can’t fathom a parent disowning their child. “Parental love should be unconditional,” she says. “Love your kid for who they are or who they aren’t. The parent/child bond should never be broken.” But if it is, they have a place that loves them: the True Colors Residence. Lauper’s quick not to take all the credit, though; she names off a list of important key players who made this – a six-story, 30-bed facility, the first permanent establishment of its

Zachary Quinto Needs Our Help By James Duke Mason, courtesy of dot 429
Quinto’s coming out is by no means the end of the journey. There are many stars who have yet to come out, and we have yet to see a young out gay actor succeed from the very beginning.

achary Quinto’s coming out as gay on October 16th has been seriously underplayed by the media. The blogs and news outlets have all picked up and commented on the story, but none of them seem to have fully grasped the fact that this is a seminal moment in Hollywood and gay history. For the first time, a major movie star, an action hero as well as a romantic leading man, has admitted his homosexuality. “In light of Jamey’s death,” Quinto posted on his website referring to the suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old gay student in New Jersey, “it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.” By coming out of the closet, Quinto has not only done something of great significance for the entertainment industry and the gay people within it, he has committed to using his voice to fight on behalf of LGBT teenagers who don’t have a voice teens like Jamey who need others who are more visible to serve as role models to give them strength and hope. Quinto deserves a lot of credit for his decision; it required a lot of courage, as he has decided to buck the trend of the entire establishment and put saving the lives of gay youth ahead of his own self-interests (making money and being famous), which is what most celebrities in Hollywood choose instead.
Zachary Quinto revelation is just the start of the final showdown between whether things are going to change, or the status quo is going to remain in place. Some Hollywood power players are rooting for his career to fail so they can keep other gay actors and actresses in the closet. We must do everything we can to ensure that Quinto succeeds and that his career is not hindered in any way by his sexuality. We can start by seeing his new Wall Street thriller Margin Call, when it opens this Friday, October 21st. It’s absolutely vital that we turn out to see it in it’s opening weekend since directors, producers, agents, managers, and studio execs will be watching closely to see how the movie performs in the aftermath of Quinto’s coming out. If the film does well, it will go a long way to dispel the myth that casting an openly gay man in a starring role will hinder box office prospects. If the movie does badly, the Hollywood establishment will use it as evidence that they were right all along, and we simply cannot allow them to do that. We cannot allow this historic moment to be squandered by the cynics. This is a battle between hope and fear. And we must never allow fear to win. Quinto’s coming out is by no means the end of the journey. There are many stars who have yet to come out, and we have yet to see a young out gay actor succeed from the very beginning. Zachary Quinto is a trailblazer, and this is our chance to help him make the huge difference that we’ve all been waiting for.

21st Century Quotes on Being Gay “I’ve never shared that I’m gay onair, even though I’ve been out to my family, friends and co-workers for years. In fact, an old boyfriend – now best friend – has always given me a hard time about not doing so. But for the same reason that Zach [Quinto] decided to come out, I too, no longer wanted to hide this part of my life. There have been too many tragic endings and too many cases of bullying because of intolerance. As a kid I wanted someone to look up to, someone that could relate to the feelings I was having. Most of all, I wanted to know that it would get better. And it did. As a journalist, I don’t want to be the story, but as a gay man I don’t want to stand silent if I can offer some inspiration or encouragement to kids that might be struggling with who they are.” – Anchorman Dan Kloeffler on publicly coming out of the closet Bullying is something everyone needs to remember and condemn, and it’s what Kloeffler said was on his mind when he came out on national television in the early morning television broadcast. He was referring to a gay teenager, 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of Buffalo, N.Y., who had valiantly fought intolerance and violent anti-gay discrimination to the point of posting a You Tube video titled “It Gets Better,” only to finally succumb to suicide when he lost the will to endure more intolerance from his peers. Although Koeffler was likely confident he would suffer no repercussions at work nor in the rest of his life by his admission, it was still a courageous move apparently undertaken in an effort to help others in less comfortable situations. Too many people who could make a difference sit by idly and silently when opportunities arise to speak out against intolerance and discrimination, and Koeffler acknowledged he had been one of those for quite some time. When it comes to anti-gay discrimination and bullying or any other class of prejudice, situations just don’t get any better without concerted resistance on the part of the oppressed. I know this because I have in the past tried to reason with evangelical Christians, including a close associate of Jeffress’, whom I have known most of my life. Their reaction to my pleas for compas-
sion as regards the plight of young LGBT people who are victims of anti-gay bullying and other issues involving discrimination was something along the lines of they deserve what they get. A typical response during the conversations was a flabbergasting, “We are so far apart on this,” which was based solely on what I consider to be misguided religious beliefs. What I learned from trying to reason with the opponents of our quest for equal rights is that it was destined from the start to be a fruitless endeavor, and that our only hope in attracting allies is to appeal to the compassion of open-minded individuals who believe in fairness. Even if that wasn’t Koeffler’s conscious objective in speaking out on the broadcast, I think his words probably reached a lot of people who are realizing our sheer numbers necessitate them giving more thought to our mission. Maybe it’s a good time for others to follow Koeffler’s lead and see what kind of difference they might be able to make in spreading tolerance and fairness in their communities. LCR Hosts Successful Event for Sheriff Lamberti

he Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida sponsored a very successful evening social for Sheriff Al Lamberti at the Lazy Lake home of Joe McCallion and Jim Rafferty. The festive crowd exuberantly met with and greeted Sheriff Lambeti with a fanfare of cheers and applauds in spite of the fact that heavy Sheriff Lamberti rain moved the event indoors. Sheriff Al fielded a number of questions after his brief introduction by the club’s President, Mrs. Sandra Steen. Guest addressed concerns about corruption, pill mills, alleged sex slavery rings, and if he had any other political interests other than that of being the Sheriff of Broward County. The Sheriff reported that the number of pill mills in the county have been substantially reduced thanks to the cooperation he’s received because of Legislative action and support from the State Attorney’s office. He noted that he and his staffers have worked with the County Commission and was therefore able to reduce his operational budget substantially thereby meeting a number of budget guidelines and objectives. Guests were also informed that, with the support of the State Attorney’s office, issues addressing corruption have already been highlighted by the media; yet, there are still some ongoing investigations. His office is well aware of an underground sex trade and there are staffers who address issues dealing with the battering of women and matters associated with child pornography and abuse. ulti Media Platforms, already in a legal battle with Southeast Offset over failing to pay for the publication of the Florida Agenda, has a new court date with a second printer. Buddy Tuchman, the owner of Printing Corporation of the Americas announced last week that his company has sued Multi Media Platforms and Publisher Bobby Blair, in Broward Circuit Court for failing to pay for over $20,000 in printing costs for the publication of Mark’s List Magazine. That lawsuit follows another legal battle MMP is having with Southeast Offset, the former printer of the Florida Agenda. Southeast Offset is also seeking past due monies in the thousands of dollars for their unpaid printing costs. Blair’s defense is that they “had a repeated lack of performance,” but the claim was denied by Southeast Offset’s Troy Clowdus, who is hoping for a “favorable judgment” in the next two weeks. “I can assure you,” he said, “that the quality of the printing was not the problem.”
HRSA award will create a national LGBT health training
H
RSA recently awarded $248,000 to the Fenway Institute to create a National Training and Technical Assistance Center to help community health centers improve the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) populations. The Fenway Institute is the research, training and policy arm of Fenway Health, a community health center that has served the LGBT community in Boston, Mass., for more than 40 years. Since 2000, the Fenway Institute has provided medical, academic and community institutions with training, education, and technical assistance in LGBT health. The Transvestigator
By Victoria Michaels
L
ast month a local lesbian decided to go shopping for clothes at a Nordstroms Rack at Miracle Market Place in Miami and although her experience was “less than pleasant” it has sparked a new awareness and a positive change from the department store. The incident in question involved openly lesbian Maureen Colon of Miami. She went into a Nordstrom store and picked out a few men’s flannel shirts and men’s boxers shorts. The problem occurred when Colon says she asked to be taken to the dressing room. While trying on the flannel shirts inside a private room she heard male voices in another dressing room. That’s when she realized she had been taken to the men’s dressing room instead of the ladies room. She quickly got dressed and left the room. She then complained to the employee and management about the incident. Although Colon is not transgender, her general masculine appearance and selection of male clothing and underwear apparently confused the store employee who mistakenly thought she was a male. Colon shared with me how distraught and embarrassed she was about the situation. Even though the staff at Nordstrom apologized to her about the mistake Colon was still outraged. After the incident the staff asked Colon if a similar situation arises in the future should they ask which dressing room the person prefers? Colon responded that she has breasts and feels that the employee should have noticed that fact and immediately escorted her to the ladies room without question despite her masculine look and choice of male clothing. “The reason I felt violated and humiliated is because I do not think that I look like a man so I was offended that they stereotyped me as ‘transgender,”’ she said. “I could not have been that confusing to them because I have breasts. Even though I wear men’s pants, shirts, and underwear I’m still a woman and I feel as though and should have been treated as such.” Colon told me she frequently shops at the Miracle Market Place location and was aware the employee was taking her in to the men’s dressing room. “A red flag went up,” she said. However, she didn’t question the employee because,
“Well I thought that perhaps they had redesigned the fitting rooms.” It’s important to note that Nordstroms has a very high rating with the Human Rights Campaign for being supportive of gay rights and equality. They always have a presence at the gay pride parade in Chicago where they are based. While contacting Nordstroms I discovered they even have a Diversity Department, which I believe speaks volumes. I got in touch with Tara Darrow in the Diversity Department who was very familiar with the incident and considered it a priority. She told me the company wanted to extend their heartfelt apology to Colon for unintentionally offending her. She explained to me that they are making efforts to come up with a reasonable solution and assured me they are making a serious attempt to ensure that an incident like this never happens again. Darrow expressed that she would like

Nordstroms Making Change for Transgender Community
partment Stores last year,” Darrow said. “The incident with Maureen Colon was an isolated occurrence that was an honest mistake as we would never deliberately offend nor discriminate against anyone for any reason. My experience through speaking with you about this incident will better help our company learn and grow in an ever changing world as we want everyone to feel welcomed and accepted in to better educate employees and even asked me how to handle a situation like this in the future since I am transgender. She also asked if I would be interested in attending a staff meeting at one of their stores to teach a sensitivity training course. She then told me the employee, who mistakenly thought Colon was a male, is very distressed and apologetic and wants our readers to know that it was not intentional. “We are working feverishly to transition our Nordstrom Rack male and female dressing rooms over to “gender neutral” dressing rooms since this incident with Maureen occurred and we have already made those changes in our Nordstrom De-
our stores.” My advice to anyone like Colon in the future is simple. If ever in a public place and you need to ask for a dressing room or restroom it’s always best to be as specific as possible. I would phrase the question like this: “Can you please direct me to the ladies room, or can men’s room?” I want to commend Nordstroms for offering gender neutral dressing rooms as this will be much appreciated by the transgender community as well as others who feel their gender may be in question. I also want to thank Maureen Colon for making this all possible by having the courage to come forward with her personal experience.

T
o John Amaechi’s long list of achievements – former NBA basketball player, gay activist, human rights advocate – add another: Order of the British Empire. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has tabbed the hoopster-turnedsocial entrepreneur for the “honour,” bestowed Oct. 26 at Buckingham Palace. His selection has drawn kudos from disparate quarters. National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern called Amaechi “an inspiration to millions”; Director of Amnesty International UK Kate Allen cited his work “promoting a greater understanding of human rights in all sports.” Amaechi certainly deserves the Order. But he’s not the only LGBT sports figure worthy of praise. The roster of gay sports figures – and their accomplishments – grows, seemingly by the day. Finally they’ve been compiled, all in one place.

It’s quite an impressive list. Outsports – the go-to website for all things sporting and queer – has released “the 100 most important moments in gay sports history.” Reading what’s happened since 1969 is both educational and empowering. (Full disclosure: I helped research the list. And, I am proud to say, publication of my book “Jocks: True Stories of America’s Gay Male Athletes,” makes the cut – barely – at No. 99.) The “Top 100” includes some names that are very familiar, some that are lesser known, and a few obscurities. All have contributed to the current, explosive and largely positive state of LGBT sports. The list begins at No. 100 with “University of Florida settles lawsuit with Andrea Zimbardi.” The 2004 case involved an honor student and softball captain, who was kicked off the team because of suspicions she was a lesbian. The settlement mandated the first-

ever homophobia training for coaches and administrators at a major university. Another important lawsuit occurred at Penn State, around the same time. Jen Harris was kicked off the basketball team by coach Rene Portland for – surprise! – being a lesbian. Portland was fined $10,000 by the university. She later resigned. Other less-than-stellar gay sports moments include New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey declaring he would not want a gay teammate; gay soccer star Justin Fashanu committing suicide, and Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker spewing homophobic comments in a Sports Illustrated interview. Most of the top 100 events, however, are positive. The San Francisco Giants were the first professional sports team to make an “It Gets Better” video, encouraging young teens. Other squads, in a variety of leagues, followed suit. New York Rangers hockey player Sean Avery is an outspoken proponent of gay marriage. His activism played a role in this year’s vote by New York legislators to legalize same-sex nuptials. Also in New York, “Take Me Out” – a play about a gay baseball player – made its mark on Broadway. Two significant things happened: It won a Tony Award for Best Play, and brought gay men who did NOT necessarily love theater, to the theater. At the University of Pennsylvania, the formation of Penn’s Athletes and Allies Tackling Homphobia and Heterosexism (PATH) presaged the rise of similar groups on other
college campuses. Allies were also in the news when Hudson Taylor – a straight University of Maryland wrestler – wore a Human Rights Campaign sticker on his headgear. He went on to form Athlete Ally, a support group that works tirelessly to challenge homophobia and transphobia in sports. Some of the events on Outsports’ list sound almost random. In 2010, the Stanley Cup – won earlier that year by the Chicago Blackhawks – had a position of honor at that city’s Gay Pride parade. Others are truly distinctive, like the publication in 1974 of Patricia Nell Warren’s seminal novel “The Front Runner,” and the first-ever Gay Games in 1982. But it is coming out that may be the most prevalent and important thread throughout Outsports’ list. Just as John Amaechi’s announcement shined a light on pro basketball, other men and women have had similar effects on their own teammates, coaches and fans. Virtually every sport is represented: football (Esera Tuaolo, Roy Simmons), baseball (Billy Bean), hockey (Brendan Burke), swimming and diving (Mark Tewksbury), golf (Muffin Spencer-Devlin), wrestling, mountain biking, women’s boxing, dressage, bodybuilding – even cricket and hurling. The top two stories on the list, in fact, involve coming out: tennis star Martina Navratilova in 1981, and former football player Dave Kopay five years earlier. Some of the sports in which LGBT athletes have come out are major. Others are minor, even obscure. Still – even in 2011 – it takes courage for any athlete, in any event, to say those few words. John Amaechi said them four years ago. He had no idea what would happen afterward. Would he be vilified? Shunned? Perhaps even physically assaulted? None of that happened. Instead, the Queen of England put a medal around his tall, gay neck. Dan Woog is a journalist, educator, soccer coach, gay activist, and author of the “Jocks” series of books on gay male athletes.
