lack History Month will be celebrated through a gay perspective, at The Pride Center, at Equality Park. Selected material highlights the talents and artistic contributions of LGBT individuals of African-American descent. On Saturday, February 26 the center will host an opening artist’s reception with wine, hors d’ourves, visual arts by local artists, and readings. Bishop S. F. Makalani-MaHee, who helped to create the largest national celebration of Black Gay Pride in Atlanta, wishes to see Black Gay Pride expand and become a destination for the event. “I see no reason why South Florida, with our paradise weather in February, shouldn’t be able to be one of the largest slices celebrating the lives of same-gender-loving people of African descent, said MakalaniMaHee. “It only takes one person to build a legacy, and while I want to start that spark I want the community to build this event. The event already seems to have caused
a spark. At the artist’s reception, City Commissioner Julie Carson will present a proclamation declaring February 26, Black Gay Pride Day in Wilton Manors. The February 26, 6 p.m. reception will be followed by an 8 p.m. screening of the online series “The Lovers and Friends Show. The series explores the lives of “urban, same-gender-loving sisters and is quite a sensation on the Internet. A film focusing on homophobia in the black church, “Silence is Death will also be aired at the same time. On Sunday the Bishop and the Pride Center are proud to present a performance of “S/He which explores a young man’s journey in a woman’s body that asks a question at the center of a transgender person’s life. Namely, “Are you a man, a woman, both? How do you know? One thing that is certain, Bishop Makalani-MaHee wants to educate and empower the LGBT African-American community in South Florida. Please visit GLCCSF.org for more information.

or 20 years, gay sex advice columnist Dan Savage has offered straight talk in “Savage Love,” which is syndicated internationally and now can be heard on podcasts. This Saturday, Savage will be dishing out his frank commentary at the Broward Center as the concluding headliner of the 2011 ArtsUnited ArtExplosion festival. What can audiences expect? Savage can’t definitively answer that question. “You know, I don’t know quite yet,” he replies with a chuckle. “We can do anything, maybe everything when it’s live. It’s really like my column and podcast, where we go where (readers and listeners) take it.” While some appearances can be very serious, like a recent discussion in Chicago about sexually transmitted diseases and an appearance in Rhode Island that focused on bullying, he points out, “I always reserve a lot of time for Q-and-A. It’s my format, what I’m most comfortable doing.” With two decades under his belt, Savage’s
job has definitely evolved. “I always put it in terms of the ‘pre-Internet and Google’ Savage Love and the ‘post-Internet Savage Love,” he explains. “Early on, I used to get questions like. What is a cock ring? Or, Is there a BDSM group in my area? I don’t have to answer those questions anymore.” He said his readers now present questions that involve situational ethics problems. They are more likely to present a set of circumstances and ask, “What do I do?” Savage finds that those questions are much more subjective, more difficult to respond to and definitely draw more fire. And, with the ease of e-mail, he continues to draw plenty of fire. “I’d rather provoke a response than not. I have a thick skin,” he responds. On the issue of bullying LGBT youth, Savage provoked a huge response with his “It Gets Better” campaign. What started as an appeal to his readers before the rash of gay suicides last fall, picked up momentum as thousands were moved to respond to the deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Cody

eaders of Qweerty.com were amongst those who were probably not surprised to learn that Merrill Lynch and Bank of America were suing the powerful Los Angeles-based Regent Entertainment for fraud. Over a period of months, the writers at Queerty had been exposing Regent’s sketchy business practices, which included not paying their freelance workers. That was small potatoes compared to what came next. Last Thursday, in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Regents was socked with a blistering 57-page lawsuit accusing them of taking out fraudulent loans from the banks for nonexistent projects. The plaintiffs are
alleging that loans, which they made to pursue distribution agreements and movie deals, went instead into the pocketbooks of upper management personnel. Merrill Lynch and Bank of America is seeking $90 million in damages, a figure reached based on the monies it had fronted the company since 2005, when it first advanced $50 million to allow Regents to acquire film and licensing agreements.

broke his heart: “He was brutally bullied in middle school and high school and it’s amazing that he survived. Teachers and administrators didn’t lift a finger to stop it. We were so blown away to find it was still happening today.” As the father of a 12-year-old adopted son, he finds himself thinking more about his work in different ways. “I don’t pull any punches in my column,” he says. “Now, my son doesn’t read my column, but I know that other kids not much older than him read me. I don’t think they should. We don’t think of our own parents as being sexual.” For the time being, Savage is content churning out his columns and addressing the problems of others. “Think about how long Ann Landers did her column. It’s a very sweet gig and not something you walk away from. Everybody likes to talk about sex and everybody likes to get e-mails,” he explains. “That’s what I do.”

Regent Entertainment is the parent company of gay media titans, The Advocate, Out magazine, Gay.com, Here! TV, and Alyson Books. The Chairman and CEO of the Regent Group of Entertainment Companies, Stephen Paul Jarchow, and his business partner Alan Colichman, are named as defendants in the meticulously detailed lawsuit. The complaint reads, in part: “Defendants knew that these marketing and release strategies and distribution budgets would never be adhered to or executed and that they were inappropriate for the scope of the, more often than not, low-quality straight to DVD film titles, but submitted them to Plaintiffs anyway.” To support its funding requests, Jarchow and his partner are accused of purposely sending bogus documents to Merrill to fraudulently induce the funding, lending authenticity to otherwise undercapitalized shell entities. The allegations also include a claim that Regent “knowingly created unreasonable, inflated—and possible fake—release strategies, financial projections, marketing strategies and film distribution budgets.”
Another example of the funding fraud involves ‘Here!’ the gay entertainment subscription channel. In that allegation, Regents is accused not only of defaulting on its loan payments, but falsely altering those notes to extend its payment obligations from 18 months to up to 20 years, all without permission from Merrill Lynch. Jarchow is also the chairman of Here! One of the movies Regents released had been ‘Gods and Monsters.’ But Queerty is releasing a storyline about the entertainment giant with the headlines ‘Frauds and Monsters: A Rogue’s Gallery of Regents Players” Here is what they say about the company now being sued: “Have you overindulged with booze? Or boys (or both)? Hiding a raging crystal meth addiction? Perhaps you lied under oath to keep your big-time movie studio boss out of jail, only to find that no one on the lot wanted to work with you after that? Maybe you’ve done things that are even more heinous—and then bragged about them in public? If so, you may find a career on the Regent Media executive team!”

arly Friday morning, with a voice vote, the House of Representatives passed the ‘Hastings Amendment,’ salvaging an extra $42 million dollars for the AIDS drug budget. As of February 17, Florida, with the nation’s third highest AIDS rate, has 3,276 people on the AIDS Drug Assistance Program waiting list. That is more than half the national number waiting for these life saving medicines. United States Congressman Alcee Hastings (D, FL, 23rd District) authorized and introduced the budget amendment to the current year’s budget that secures crucial additional funding to address a growing crisis in the nation’s ADAP, a network of federal and state funded programs that provide life-saving HIV treatments to low income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals living with HIV/AIDS nationwide. “Congressman Hastings has succeeded in getting government funding to address a growing AIDS funding shortfall that is crippling ADAP and threatening the lives of thousands of Americans,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “His swift and decisive action on this issue shows real leadership…” As of February 17, there were 6,452 individuals on ADAP waiting lists in 10 states. Since December alone, patient waiting lists for the nation’s hard-hit ADAP have grown 36 percent for individuals waiting to access antiretroviral treatment through ADAP than there were just two months ago. Last week, officials and physicians from AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s Southern Bureau, traveled to Washington to lobby for the use of financial offsets from HHS bureaucracy to address the ADAP crisis. Michael Kahane, AHF’s Southern Bureau Chief and Dr. Rebecca Colon, Medical Director of AHF’s North Point clinic in Fort Lauderdale met with Rep. Alcee Hastings’ office. “What’s truly remarkable about the passage of the Hastings Amendment is that at

time when the Republican controlled House is cutting over $100 billion from the budget, they unanimously agreed to fund AIDS care and treatment,” added AHF’s Weinstein. Representative Hastings stated that “It is unconscionable that, in 2011, we often have the resources to save lives but wait until a crisis before taking action. Just this month, thousands of Floridians living with HIV/AIDS were on the verge of losing access to their life-saving drugs as Florida’s ADAP ran out of money.” During the debate on the amendment last week, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D, FL 20th District) also spoke on the issue. In her remarks, Wasserman Shultz said: “This essential national program is undeniably in the midst of a devastating funding crisis. The combination of an economic recession, state budget cuts and increased testing and diagnosis of HIV have a created the perfect storm against ADAP’s fiscal situation. More patients are requiring ADAP treatment as the program has been emptied out.” Only a few hours before this amendment worked its way through the House, the Republican leadership slashed federal funding programs for STD and HIV testing, along with prevention programs administered by Planned Parenthood. South Florida AIDS activist Michael Rajner, who had lauded AHF’s intervention to help ADAP, was not so kind to the Republican Congress. He posted a blog declaring that other important programs were “ruthlessly gutted,” adding that “we are fighting an extreme agenda.” Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz echoed that sentiment, telling SFGN that “The past couple of weeks have seen an unprecedented attempt by the Republican majority to force a radical, dangerous, harmful social agenda on women at the expense of the millions of unemployed Americans waiting for them to fulfill their campaign promise to create jobs.” The United States Senate must now agree to the budget amendment in order for it to pass and take effect.

he U.S. House of Representatives over the weekend passed a $1.2 trillion budget for the current Fiscal Year (FY 2011) – a budget that is $61 billion smaller than the FY 2010 budget and one that includes significant cuts likely to impact the LGBT community and “massive” cuts to programs for people with HIV. The almost completely partisan vote, led by the Republican majority, stands little chance of being sustained in the Democratic-controlled Senate or by President Barack Obama. Many political observers likened it to Re-
publicans playing a game of “chicken” with the president and the Senate, with the moment of truth coming when a temporary budget for FY 2011 (known as a “continuing resolution”) expires on Friday, March 4. The Congress must either come up with another continuing resolution or a final FY 2011 budget; otherwise, the government will be without the funds to operate. But the House bill cuts were already easing off the pedal by the time they passed on a 235 to 189 vote at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. More conservative Republicans had threatened to cut the budget by $100 billion. Republicans say the cuts are necessary to fight a dangerously high deficit between what the government brings in in revenues and what it is spending. Democrats say the cuts are not a serious effort to reduce that deficit and, instead, will endanger the lives and well-being of the nation’s poorest citi-
zens, while continuing to deliver tax breaks to its wealthiest. One government-funding watchdog, OMBWatch, characterized the cuts as going after the federal budget with a “chainsaw,” because they involved “collapsing a yearlong process into a matter of hours.” For instance, the budget for the Center for National and Community Service was cut by 90 percent, said OMBWatch, and the budget for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was cut by 20 percent. Carl Schmid of The AIDS Institute said the House’s proposed cuts on AIDS-related programs would have “severe ramifications to millions of people’s lives both here in the United States and around the world.” For example, said Schmid, the cuts would reduce the money available to help people with HIV infection and low incomes obtain life-saving medications by $25 million from the FY 2010 level. AIDS activists had hoped, instead, to increase the FY 2011 budget for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) by $65 million over the FY 2011 level to help ease a growing waiting list of patients in need of such help. The House budget also proposes significant cuts in Community Development Block Grant funding, a program to provide housing assistance to families with low incomes. Some LGBT centers around the country have been able to tap into the grants to help their clients with low incomes. President Obama’s proposed budget for FY 2012 also includes a cut in CDBG funding. The House considered more than 400 amendments to its original budget proposal. Many of those were voted on in blocks but none dealt specifically with funding for AIDS or funding that impacted LGBT organizations directly. But the cuts are broad and deep enough to upset nearly everyone. For instance, it cut more than $272 million from border control measures and the all funding for public broadcasting.

he Washington Post and Toronto Sun reported last week that a poll conducted by the Orange County Equality Project in Southern California found Britney Spears to be the gay community’s greatest gay icon with 31 percent of the vote. But there’s one problem: It was a fake news story. SFGN broke the story Saturday online. After SFGN found the original source of the news piece online in an article written by Fernando Palazzo of Examiner.com SFGN contacted Palazzo for further information. While waiting for a response SFGN checked the State of California’s corporation’s database and found no records of an Orange County Equality Project. Guidestar, a website database of nonprofits around the country, was also checked with no results. Nor did organization appear to have a website, phone number, Facebook or MySpace page. Two days after the story was published online Palazzo finally e-mailed Publisher of SFGN, Norm Kent. But it still took multiple e-mails sent back and forth to Palazzo for him to finally reveal a website for the organization in question. It turns out the website is actually nothing more than a WordPress blog titled “Orange County Equality Project,” authored by a blogger named Joel Waddell. Waddell is the “source” of the Palazzo posting picked up by the mainstream media. Before Palazzo’s response, SFGN had contacted the Orange County Equality Coalition, the GLBT National Help Center, and the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center of Orange County. “Maybe you mean OCEC? Orange County Equality Coalition?” replied Executive Direc-
tor of the Community Center Ginger Hahn. The OCEC and Help Center also had never heard of the Orange County Equality Project. According to Palazzo’s bio, which has since been removed, he wrote for the “Orange County Gay Culture” section on Examiner.com. His first article appeared on the website January 28. Palazzo’s original article was also reported in his hometown Orange County paper, the OC Weekly, celebrity sites such as StarPulse.com and on international news websites, such as the TimesofIndia.com and PinkNews.co.uk. SFGN has sent three e-mails to the Washington Post looking for a comment. They have yet to respond or remove the article from their website. In Palazzo’s last email to SFGN!he claims he was the one duped by his friend Waddell and the Orange County Equality Project. In that e-mail to Publisher Norm Kent, Palazzo admits, “I am going to write a blog entry about the scam and how I fell for it. I know who Joel Waddell is, but was never ‘great friends’ with him…I made an honest mistake….What about the people from the mainstream media who picked this up without even questioning the sources? They get PAID for sloppy journalism.” Palazzo ended his note to SFGN!writing, “I learned a big lesson and I guess I need to thank you instead of condemn you.” On Monday he posted: “It has now come to my attention that this supposed organization may be the work of a one or more con artists and shouldn’t be trusted.” In that same article he also writes that Joel Waddell is an acquaintance, but then adds, “If anyone has any more specific information about Joel Waddell or the Orange County Equality Project, please let me know.”

or same-sex couples wanting to have children, knowing where to start can make a big difference. For couples starting their families through biological means, one new resource is the Family Building Options website, (familybuildingoptions.com), part of the Fertility Lifelines educational program created by pharmaceutical company EMD Serono. Despite the corporate ties, there is no marketing of EMD Serono products on the site, and it provides some genuinely useful information for both lesbians and gay men, including a free, 24-page booklet with additional material. Endocrinologist Dr. Guy Ringler, a partner with California Fertility Partners in Los Angeles, is a spokesperson for EMD Serono’s campaign to raise awareness among same-sex couples. He shared some of his suggestions for those beginning the journey.
The first step, Ringler said, is to learn what options may be available to you. Aside from Family Building Options, he recommends the American Fertility Association’s site, theafa.org. While not LGBT specific, the AFA site includes a directory of LGBT-friendly fertility professionals, and is clearly inclusive—one entry in the AFA blog is the video of Zach Wahls, a college student with two moms, who spoke in support of marriage equality at an Iowa House hearing February 1. It’s important to talk openly with your medical providers to make sure they are comfortable treating same-sex couples, Ringler said. “You really want to seek fertility care in a setting in which you feel entirely comfortable and respected.” Ringler then advised talking with your physician about what options fit your particular circumstances. To help determine this, he recommends a “baseline fertility evaluation.” For women, this would likely include an evaluation (usually a simple blood test) to determine where the ovaries are in their lifespan, a key factor in pregnancy success. An x-ray of pelvic anatomy can also confirm that the fallopian tubes are open. Men should undergo a semen analysis to confirm normal sperm production. Ringler said some of these tests can be done by an OB/GYN, more of whom are now doing basic fertility work. Patients should ask, however, what services they offer in their offices and what they refer elsewhere. For some patients, however, starting with a fertility specialist may be the better route. For example, office hours are critical, explained Ringler. Some OB/GYN offices are only open on weekdays, so “if you’re ovulating on a weekend, you miss out on a cycle.” He also cautioned that when there are infertility problems, some OB/GYNS may hold onto patients for too long before referring them to a specialist. Because ovarian age is the primary factor in pregnancy rates, time is of the essence. His own approach, if the baseline evaluation does not indicate any problems, would

be to start with the simplest treatment option first—donor sperm inseminations—for three to six cycles, monitoring them closely to catch any potential problems. He warned, however, that “even in the best of conditions, pregnancy rates are not as high as people think,” averaging only about 12 percent per cycle. The primary factor in pregnancy rate is the age of the woman ovulating, he said. Under age 40, it is about 12 percent per cycle. Over age 40, it can drop to between five and seven percent. If things are not successful after a set number of cycles, he would then consider a more involved treatment, such as increasing the number of eggs per cycle or trying in vitro fertilization (IVF), where egg and sperm are combined outside the woman’s body and then placed in the uterus. IVF, whose success rates have grown over the last 10 years, can increase the pregnancy rate to perhaps 50 or 60 percent under age 40. Women over 40, with signs of decreased ovarian reserve, also have the option of using a donor egg. Gay men interested in creating a family through biological means, he said, will most likely pursue egg donation and gestational surrogacy—where the surrogate does not use her own egg. Aside from a fertility evaluation, you would need to find agencies to provide the surrogate and egg donor, unless you are using ones known to you. Regardless, you should consult a repro-
ductive attorney, he advised. Laws regarding surrogacy vary from state to state, and things may get even more complicated if the intended parents and surrogate live in different states. IVF is then used to impregnate the surrogate. “The good news,” he said, is that pregnancy rates are very high, “about 75 percent per cycle,” because agency egg donors are in their 20s and surrogates have proven fertility. Ringler noted that surrogacy is not only an option for gay men, but also for women with uterine problems. In the last five to ten years, he believes, “surrogacy has become much more accepted by our culture,” thanks in large part to the media. Overall, Ringler advised potential parents, “One has to be patient. . . . It’s really helpful to know about the process, to know what to expect, what testing has to be done, what the success rates are, and have a realistic time plan. That’s a conversation that has to come between you and your health care team.” And beyond the factual information, “You want to feel cared for.” The information above is not meant as a substitute for the advice of your own medical professional. arol Jean Lucke and Jessica Cummins were married Friday afternoon in Decorah, Iowa. They met at a management retreat. Ms. Lucke, a divorcee, was attracted to Ms. Cummins from the start but was also seeing someone else. “I looked at her and thought she was adorable,” she said. Ms. Lucke and her partner then invited Ms. Cummins and her partner to dinner, but it never occurred because Ms. Cummins and her partner broke up. Carol Jean and Jessica then became friends and after a few years, Ms. Cummins proposed to Ms. Lucke, who gave Ms. Cummins her mother’s diamond in a pendant. “I just want to spend the rest of my life making you happy,” she said. Barbara Burke and Robert Cullinane were married Thursday at a hotel in Rhinebeck, NY. But who cares? They’re a cute, older couple, and I hope they had a wonderful wedding. I want them to be very, very happy for the rest of their lives, but when I’m scanning the Weddings/Celebrations pages in the Lifestyle section of Sunday’s New York Times, my eyes only settle on the faces of same sex couples, unless the heterosexual groom is very handsome. That leaves Barbara and Robert very low on my list of interests. We care about what we know, and we want other people to care as much or as little as we do. When my first book on gay issues was
published, my father wrote a note to me that read, “Got your book, found it interesting. When are you going to write about something else?” He didn’t care about gay issues at the time, and didn’t want me to care about them as much as I did. But thirty years later, I’m still writing about gay issues, because that’s what I care about. We care about the people, places, and things that touch our lives deeply. For instance, if you have been to Egypt, Israel, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, or Haiti, and had positive, memorable experiences in those countries, you will probably care a lot more about what is going on in those places than people who have never traveled there. We all read the same newspaper accounts of world events, but we have different reactions based upon our personal experiences. Two friends and I were talking about transgender issues recently, and one very thoughtful, caring man said, “I just can’t get my arms around it. I understand it biologically, but not personally.” “Do you have any transgender friends?” I asked. “No,” he replied. “That’s why you can’t get your arms around the issue. his has been a very busy week for gay news, so much so that all the news that is fit to print can’t fit in this paper. Every week we have to make decisions on what to actually lay out on the printed page, and with a thriving LGBT community locally and nationwide, the decisions become tougher and tougher. We search the Internet for news, and with Google search engines capturing gay news worldwide, there are ample and diverse choices. But with any blogger that has a computer and publishing his own writing, you have to separate the wheat from the chaff carefully. We try to fill our Gayvine section with cute entertainment news that is not too deep but nevertheless appealing. Last week, our new managing editor, Jason Parsley, read that Britney Spears won a poll conducted by the Orange County Equality Project as America’s greatest gay icon. He saw it on a gay news Google search in the Washington Post. My first reaction was ‘What the hell is a gay human rights organization doing spending its limited resources doing a poll on the Lady Gagas of the world?’ Anyway, you figure if it is in the Washington Post it has got to be real. But Parsley went ahead and tried to speak to the people who conducted the poll. What he found was that there was no there there. Yet here was this poll that had now been referenced in fourteen publications worldwide, including the Times of India, the Toronto Sun, the Orange County Weekly, as well as the Washington Post. We did a little investigating and not to

our surprise, the poll was the fictional creation of a singular blogger on a free Wordpress blog, which was then picked up by an unemployed blogger writing on Examiner. com -- best described by Broward New Times as a ‘tawdry site’ with no credibility. But this is how the world gets its news today -- instantly, half-ass, and often, not credible. Just yesterday, a release came across our desk announcing that a same-sex couple in Kentucky was told at the Creation Museum they could not attend a ‘date night’ which was reserved for heterosexual couples. Purportedly, they were refused a refund for tickets they had paid for. The story is on the front page of Advocate.com. But I was not
When he appeared, his name was known to museum officials, who had in advance determined they were not going to let him in on that night. Mark Looy, the communications director
buying into it. I have a hard time believing that a 70,000 square foot museum would empower a security guard to summarily remove two people from entering solely because they were gay. So I checked out the story, and sure enough, the news that has gone viral has a tad bit of a virus. Were these two men a same sex couple? No. These were two men that had pre-publicized and orchestrated a visual protest on a specifically planned ‘Date Night’ at the museum. Blogger Joe Sonka had stated in advance he wanted to send the ‘most flamboyantly gay couple possible’ to the event.
for the museum, stated that based on his blogging posts, “We feared Sonka might be purposely disruptive. We do not summarily remove same-sex couples.” Accordingly, the Museum was forewarned and knew Sonka’s name and they chose to deny him entry. It was probably a bad and foolish choice, because if the creationists can handle dinosaurs, it can handle a flamboyantly gay couple. Still, that issue we can address at another time. What is clear is that the story going viral now in many media sources has not disclosed all the facts available to journalists.
The impression some stories are creating -forgive the word -- is that a couple of gay men showed up at the door of the Creation Museum, paid their money and were told to go home because they were a same-sex couple. That is not the way it went down at all. The moral of both stories is that in this day and age of Internet and instant journalism, where CNN could report a month ago that a Congresswoman was killed, while she was still alive and in an ambulance on her way to a hospital, we have to be more cautious than ever. We should not be in such a hurry to tell the news that we sacrifice the truth, the full truth, and nothing but the truth. The Internet has the ability to spread a lie half way around the world before the truth can catch up with it. We all owe a duty to ourselves and others to be the kind of journalists who record the truth before we are saddled with words we can’t ever take back. An unemployed gay blogger in Orange County, California may have learned that lesson this week thanks to a real journalist doing his job the way it is supposed to be done.

t one level, it’s astoundingly funny: a congressman telling a woman with whom he is flirting that the only picture he has of himself is shirtless. If there is one thing every congressman has, it is pictures of himself in a shirt. Often, stuffed. So Rep. Chris Lee, a.k.a. the Shirtless Congressman, the married Republican flirt from upstate New York who resigned after the flirtee went public, was definitely stupid. In addition to lying about his photo collection, he lied about his age (minus seven), his marital status (he claimed divorced) and his occupation (perhaps only in Washington would “lobbyist” be considered an attractive choice). He did all this in a series of flirtatious e-mails with a 34-year-old woman who placed a “woman looking for man” ad on Craigslist. Compared to what some of my friends found when they placed similar ads or otherwise jumped into computer dating, I’d say she did rather well. I bet he even told the truth about his height. His real stupidity came in linking to his Facebook account and using his real name. In short, he lied, but not enough. If it sounds like I’m making light of this, the truth is that I am. Mrs. Lee may not take well to it -- caring for a 2-year-old while her husband acts like a teenager -- but that, in my book, is very much between the two of them. Last time I checked, there were no laws against any of the things Lee did. No one was underage. She was advertising; he responded. They never actually did anything. The picture wasn’t even pornographic. He made an avatar of himself. The avatar Chris Lee flirted. He clearly wanted to be found attractive. Again, between husband and wife. Hard as I might struggle to get on a high horse about Republican hypocrisy on matters of morality, I can’t find the resignable offense here. And yet I understand exactly why he immediately resigned. He was about to be

eaten alive. Between understanding what’s going on in Egypt and talking congressional sex, which do you think plays best on drivetime? Or cable? Or the tabloids? Or celebrity sites? Or opposition blogs? Etcetera. It’s not that any of those people actually think sending a shirtless picture is a high crime or misdemeanor or a betrayal of public trust, much less – horrors – grounds for losing their jobs. It’s just that on Day 19, what could be a more welcome relief from the intractable problems of the world than making a flirtatious congressman the “turkey” of the day? By moving quickly and saying nothing, there is a chance he’ll avoid an extended roasting. The troubling part, from what I’ve read, is that Lee was actually a very good congressman, deeply involved in helping the families of the victims in an air crash in his own town, respected in the community, even “loved,” according to press reports, which is saying a lot for a member of Congress these days. His career in public service is over not because he did anything that makes him unfit to serve. It’s over because of the way the media writ large (I mean all of us) turn private mistakes into public firestorms far more threatening than the mistakes themselves.

frightening statistic appeared in our local paper which stated that 30 percent of individuals driving on the roadways of South Florida do not carry the very minimal automobile insurance which is required under Florida Law. With the exception of individuals who lease cars, in order to drive on the roadways of Florida, one must carry property damage coverage to pay for physical damage to another car and PIP (Personal Injury Protection), which is meant to pay for the driver’s own medical bills and lost wages up to a combined total of $10,000. Drivers are required to show proof of insurance when obtaining an auto license tag. What often occurs, however, is that individuals obtain insurance on a payment plan and only make the first payment so they can present proof of insurance to the tag agency to get their license plate. Then, when payments are not made, the insurance carrier cancels the policy. State law requires the tags be picked up by the authorities, but this type of enforcement almost never occurs especially with budget cuts. So the question arises, what is adequate automobile insurance protection for my family? I am of the opinion that more is better. When you lease a car for a period of time in excess of one year, you must carry liability insurance of $100,000 per person and $300,000. This is an excellent starting point. You should ask your insurance carrier for liability coverage of at least 100/300 for coverage that protects you if people sue you. If you are struck by an uninsured car and injured, you can still be compensated for those injuries if you buy uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Your automobile insurance carrier must offer you the opportunity to buy this coverage in an amount which is equal to your liability coverage. Some insurance agents will try to talk you out of this coverage, DON’T LET THEM!
Underinsured coverage acts like an excess coverage policy to the policy of the person whose negligence caused your injuries. For example, if the person who hits you has $10,000 in liability insurance and you have $100,000 in coverage under the underinsured motorist coverage of your policy, you, in actuality, have $110,000 of potential compensation instead of $10,000. Why should your injuries, which are caused by other peoples’ negligence, be less important than people who would be compensated by your liability coverage, if you were at fault? As I stated before, your own PIP (Personal Injury Protection) pays your medical bills as a result of an accident, regardless if you, or someone else is at fault. Insurance agents often tell people they should take a deductible on their PIP and that their health insurance will pick up the difference. This is not accurate because PIP stands in line first to pay bills from an accident. Also, PIP pays only 80 percent of medical bills so people end up owing out of pocket, the deductible plus the 20 percent balance. To avoid this from happening, do not accept a deductible and ask your agent for medical payments coverage known in the industry as MEDPAY. This coverage pays the 20 percent and may cover additional bills at 100 percent, depending on the amount you buy. The minimum you should have is $2,000 to cover the balance from PIP. Agents will often tell you that your health insurance will kick in so you do not need MEDPAY. This may, or may not be true, but if you have an HMO, your bills will not be picked up by your health insurance under most circumstances. Under Florida Law, you must carry property damage coverage, but this coverage only pays for damage to someone else’s car, not
damage done to your car. To cover your car, you must carry comprehensive coverage, with or without a deductible. Most companies offer, in addition, towing, roadside assistance and automobile rental coverage if your car is in the shop because ofan accident. Although these are valuable types of coverage, one should discuss the costs and benefits with the agent depending on many factors including the value of your car. One last piece of advice, big name brand insurance companies are usually competitive with their rates, so shop around. Small, no name companies often prey on lower income people
pretending to be cheaper. They often turn out to be more expensive and provide minimal service to their customer. This is by no means a detailed look at automobile insurance in Florida, but is meant to give you the basics of Florida automobile coverage. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about automobile insurance coverage or automobile accidents. I have been representing the injured for all types of personal injury matters, including car accidents, medical malpractice, slip and falls, and nursing home abuse, here in Fort Lauderdale for over 33 years.

urders often come from the hands of people under the influence of hard drugs. Sid Vicious killed Nancy Spungen while on heroin. Michael Alig, popularized in the film Party Monster, killed his roommate under the influence – or lack thereof – of popular 1990s club drugs. However, nothing as illegal seems to be the cause of a recent murder in North Carolina. A 19-year-old man named Michael Anderson called 911 in Hickory, N.C., early Monday, Feb 14, and told operators he had shot and mutilated his roommate. “I took some pills and, um, the pills made me go mad and I murdered my roommate,” Anderson is recorded telling 911 dispatchers. “I shot him three times and then I used an ax and mutilated his body.” Anderson claimed that the Mucinex made him feel “weird.” He went so far as to say he “overdosed” on the cold remedy. The victim, Stephen Starr, was shot several times with both a handgun and a shotgun. In addition to being mutilated by the ax, words were carved into Starr’s flesh. Some words were made with a knife, others with what officer’s believe to be a ballpoint pen. Catawba County Sheriff Roy
Reid claims it was one of the worst scenes he has encountered in 30 years of law enforcement. Authorities have not revealed what was “written” on Starr’s corpse. According to Anderson he was very sorry for the killing and said he loved Stephen Starr “as a friend.” Neighbors revealed that while Starr called the doublewide trailer home for eight years Anderson is a new addition. A neighbor of Starr’s said he had only just met Anderson over the weekend. However, subsequent reports offer conflicting views as to whether Starr and Anderson were roommates, or a casual fling. According to Anderson he expressed interest in “bisexuality,” and soon after he met Starr he moved in with the man. “I was straight and I wanted to go bisexual just to experiment and I went to a gay club and I met him and I went to his house,” Anderson said on the 911 call. Soon after moving in, however, it seems as if Anderson lost interest in experimenting sexually with Starr. “…I turned straight again and he wanted to touch me and stuff and I wouldn’t let him and he kept trying and I waited until he went to sleep and then I shot him three times and then mutilated him very badly.” According to Anderson there was no fight between the men, which sparked any violence. Although “gay panic” has loosely been attributed as a motive. In addition to taking the over-the-counter drug Mucinex, Anderson told officers that he was prescribed medication for ADHD in the past. Investigators spent most of the day looking for clues as to motive. A computer was removed from the home to be examined by investigators. However, it seems as if Anderson was somewhat aware as to what he was doing under the influence of Mucinex. He posted a foreshadowing of the murders on his Facebook account. In the post he asks God for forgiveness and implies he wanted to kill others. His final posting is very revealing. “I finally cracked guys I really did it this time guys.” Please visit WISTV.com to read the full story.

he quality and sound of a man’s laughter often disclose more about him than do the words he offers. Some men laugh only on cue but probably never when alone. Some laugh hysterically at a world they define as beyond control. Others laugh to shake out jangled nerves. And then there are those men whose laughter bubbles up from deep within the resources of the self – clear, potable and lightly carbonated by their life experience. That is the laughter of Gregory Kabel. Easy, contagious, and with no hint of the missing midlife crisis he twice joked about when reviewing the distinct chapters of his life. Originally from Cincinnati, Kabel earned a BA in Economics at Denison University. Groomed to assume the leadership of the family coffee business, he received the MBA of the University of Chicago Business School. Rather than return home, he joined huge ad agency BBDO as an account executive. He was assigned the Wrigley chewing gum account. Kabel focused on the introduction of their new gum Extra, which contained Nutrasweet. He also maintained the agency “Doublemint Twin” file. He had the dubious honor of responding to the legion of grandmothers who enclosed photos of their cute twin grandchildren when writing with hopes that landing a TV commercial might pay their doublebad college tuitions. Why did he not return home to manage the family business in Cincinnati? “My moving back to Cincinnati would have been awkward given my lifestyle. Although my family relationships are amicable and open, I think my father was none too eager to have the whole town know about his gay son, and I was happy to be in the bigger community that Chicago provided.” He continued: “I spent only two years at BBDO. Advertising is very subjective. You either love it or hate it. I was expected to come up with concepts and sell them to clients whose views could be frustrating.
I wanted a profession in which I could be the expert, so I went to University of Chicago Law School. I wanted to represent individuals, and I took a lot of courses in estate planning, but people kept saying to me ‘What are you thinking? You should go into finance.’ So right out of law school I went into corporate finance. For a couple of years, I was with Mayer, Brown & Platt, and then I was with McDermott Will & Emory for another 12 years. The last transaction I managed was the leveraged buyout of Nutrasweet from J.D. Searle. Searle lives on its patents and the one for Nutrasweet was running out. Internal managers bought it.” At this point in Attorney Kabel’s account, it seemed as if artificial sweeteners might be a recurring motif that would lend a sassy title to this profile. Unfortunately, sugar substitutes will not recur forcibly in his decades to come. The first big transaction he managed was the leveraged buyout of Montgomery Ward. How did that go? “Well, they went into bankruptcy a few years later, but the lawyers got paid.” Kabel graciously granted an interruption in his narrative – which will contain a startling career change – to answer the demand
for personal details about his love life. Now, at the age of 52, and living in Fort Lauderdale, Kabel is single. “I have had two long-term relationships. The first one was in 1987-2003. He worked in the meat industry. No, he was not a knifewielding supermarket butcher. He worked for a magazine that tracked market prices in the meat industry. My second relationship did not last as long. He was a cable guy and something of a rolling stone. I met both of my exes at Sidetracks in Chicago. Now the love of my life is the Dalmatian I adopted after the end of my second relationship. I don’t understand why people think Dalmatians are not sociable. Otto is an angel, incredibly friendly and loves everyone. Maybe it’s me?” Why the translation to Fort Lauderdale? “When I retired from law, I went to Chicago’s Harrington Institute of Interior Design. I had gotten into interior design to keep my sanity while practicing law in a huge firm. My partner and I bought the condo adjacent to ours and combined them. I got to do almost all the design work. The condo ended up featured on the cover of Traditional Home. I tried doing design in Chicago but ran into the same annoyances – subjective design by committee. Clearly, there is a pattern with me. I was seeking a life in which I would not be subjected to frustrating controls. I visited Fort Lauderdale a few times and moved here in 2005.

I designed and built my home in the Key West style. I was the general contractor. I remember feeling that it was the best year of my life. Every day there was a problem that I enjoyed solving.” In 2007, when the market changed, Kabel passed the Florida bar and hung out his shingle, which is now to be found on the drive in Wilton Manors. “I do a good amount of business advising, but the lion’s share of my practice is estate planning, and 90 percent of my clients are gay.” His multiple careers and locations make his advice useful to gay folks creating relationships and with assets and relatives in other regions. Protections vary from one state to another. For this reason, Kabel always includes descriptive language when documenting his clients’ relationships. Where and when they met, how they describe their affections, how they experience the permanence of their union. Those descriptions often have strength in court when legal documents from out of state may not. Kabel echoes what all lawyers in this business say. “Do not wait. Seek legal advice and do your planning well before you need it.” When asked if he felt that his life would ever again change direction, he was emphatic. “Nope. I’m three years into a growing business that I enjoy. I have a lifestyle I enjoy. Through my practice, I meet wonderful, interesting people. I am open to another man coming into my life, but I do not yearn for it the way I did when I was in my 20s. My life today is not a fire drill practice.” Despite the fact that talking about death and assets is not pleasurable, doing so with Kabel will brighten your day and will secure the probability of your own easy laughter in years to come.
