It all happens Sunday, May 20 at South Beach Park, along the Fort Lauderdale Beach. After the five kilometer walk, walkers and spectators alike will enjoy food and entertainment, all while enjoying the beach. “I think it’s going to be a really fun afternoon,” said Mark Martin, the AIDS Walk’s executive director. “I can think of worse ways to spend a Sunday.” According to Martin, Florida is ground zero for the AIDS epidemic these days. It places first in the nation for new HIV infections and third for the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS. Martin said that out of major metropolitan areas like New York and Chicago, Miami and Fort Lauderdale placed in two of the top five spots for highest rates of infection. “AIDS is clearly not just a gay disease anymore,” he said. “The way to fight the disease is to eliminate its spread. This is where the battle is fought.” This year, the wa k will be half its traditional length of 10 kilometers. Walkers will go north on A1A from the beach, make a U-Turn onto a side street, and then come back along the same route. The entertainment stage will be set up as wa kers return from their journey. The featured artists this year are CeCe Peniston, Ultra Naté, Joi Cardwell, Jason Walker, Tony Cruz, Michael Tank, and Doug Jackson. “Being part of an event like this galvanizes the community,” Martin said about the walk’s 7th year. “Regardless of their sexual orientation, their gender,

It reminds folks who are HIV positive they aren’t alone.” Funds raised at the event will go this year to eight organizations (a doubling of last year’s four), including Broward House, SunServe, Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, The Pride Center at Equality Park, Latinos Salud, and Minority Development & Empowerment, Inc. The idea behind raising the amount of beneficiaries is trying to ensure that people with HIV are being helped all around. According to the AIDS Walk’s website, even as little as $25 can make a huge difference: $25 can pay for five people’s bus passes, so that they can access the HIV/AIDS services that they need; $50 can pay for enough medical supplies to administer HIV tests for one month; $100 can pay one month’s worth of laboratory services to process HIV test results; $200 can pay for 15 people to find out their HIV status’. “Blake’s death is a surprise to me personally and to my staff and the student body,” Cerra said. “None of us had any indication that he was going through anything or having a difficult time. He was not a drug user.” Cerra called the teen “a leader. I respected him. He was just one of those kids who always went out of his way to say ‘Hi’ and ask about my day. He was the same with his teachers, too.” McCullers was described as “academically sound” by the principal, who said the teen was part of Taravella’s gifted program, enrolled in some honors courses and seemed destined for college. “I am at a loss about what happened,” Cerra said. Cheerleaders from around the country are tweeting photos of themselves with the messages, “#Love more, judge less” and “#RIP Blake” written on their wrists, with some adding the hash tag, “#Cheerleaders against bullying.” “The kids on social networks are saying he was bullied, but I can’t say that is what happened here,” said Cerra, describing McCullers as friendly and confident and an unlikely target for bullies. “He didn’t identify himself as gay,” Cerra said. “I never spoke with him about his sexual identity.”

SunServe and White House Offer Help for LGBT Seniors By Tony Adams
A
s the out and visible LGBT population ages and replaces the closeted and invisible seniors of previous generations, its need for services and protections has caught the attention of local providers, community leaders, and state and national government agencies. On Monday May 7, the University of Miami hosted the White House LGBT Conference on Aging, bringing together Florida state and local leaders, Washington representatives and policy makers, and a large number of concerned straight and gay citizens with first hand experience about the unique difficulties and obstacles faced by LGBT seniors. This conference is the fruit of LGBT visibility. Its plans and programs aim to end the fearful isolation of LGBT elder singles, lack of training or insensitivity of health care providers, unwelcoming or discriminatory policies of housing providers/managers, and the general ignorance about the specific needs of LGBT seniors. Mark Ketcham, executive director of SunServe, with administrative offices in Wilton Manors, was a “Community Perspectives” panelist at the conference.
8
Ketcham says, “Our mission in South Florida is to provide social services to the LGBT community without regard to the individual’s ability to pay. This includes mental heath services both individual and group, teen suicide prevention and self-esteem building and adult daycare.” Chad Thilborger, SunServe’s new director of institutional advancement adds, “We are expanding our services into the areas of human resources, administration, employment law and now quality of life issues for seniors.” SunServe’s newest step in its outreach to LGBT seniors is the establishment of a “phone tree” that will assemble a volunteer team to call their LGBT neighbors in Broward County who may be homebound or would like to touch base with someone every day. This initiative will build personal connections that might be missing in the lives of solitary LGBT seniors. The project is well constructed with provisions for volunteers who may be snowbirds or sometimes out of town. Anyone interested in becoming a “phone tree” volunteer will receive a three-hour training on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the administrative offices of SunServe in Wilton Manors. Verifying the need for this
Photo of SunServe’s Mark Ketham and Chad Thilborger by Tony Adams type of outreach, a straight couple attending the conference spoke about their concern for an elderly gay neighbor who lives alone. They wanted advice about assisting him respectfully and without breaching his privacy. Ketcham says, “We have so many seniors who are ‘aging in place’ here in Broward County who do not have family or friends they can rely on. In the LGBT community, we are never old until we break a hip or have to have our gall bladders removed. That is when a senior suddenly begins to worry about that picture of a former partner on the nightstand or that rainbow flag by the backdoor. What will the medics think? Will the neighbors or the visiting nurse mistreat them once their private life is exposed? Who is going to help a transgender person who needs to go into a rehab facility? Can we find a facility that will take that person without giggling?” Thilborger’s role at SunServe is to make sure new programs do not outstrip funding. He says, “The last thing SunServe will do is start something and then watch it collapse. We started our youth services in tandem with getting funding. For outreach to LGBT seniors, we are well positioned and ready when funding is secure. What I got out of the White House conference is that dollars are about to flow.” In addition to having their infrastructure in place, SunServe already has a good handle on the statistics of the LGBT senior population in Broward County. (As was noted by many speakers at the conference, before the
increase of LGBT visibility in recent years, counting LGBT seniors and assessing their needs was impossible.) SunServe recently commissioned a survey in conjunction with Florida Atlantic University called “SunServe Care Management: Seniors and Caregivers Needs Assessment” which, says Ketcham, “helped us know what’s out there. It is also important because without clear stats, you can never make a strong application for funding. SunServe covers all of Broward County, but we will take anyone who calls us, and we often get calls from Miami, Jacksonville and St Pete.” “Broward has 1.8 million residents. Seniors are 20 percent of that number with 10 percent of that group being LGBT. That translates to roughly 36,000 people. The challenge is that no one has ever asked questions about those seniors, so there is no baseline. It has only been two years since Washington (through HUD) began counting LGBT people in terms of housing. We have to remember that for many older LGBT Americans, managing a life in the closet has become a badge of honor. How do we reach closeted seniors? When funding is secure, what if the governor of Florida says ‘We don’t have any gay seniors’? SunServe will prove the size of that community and that its needs are real.” Part 2 of this report on LGBT seniors in South Florida and the White House Conference on Aging will focus on initiatives at the state and federal levels aimed at improving the lives of LGBT seniors.

NCLR Honors Heroes of Equality
San Fran Celebration Draws 1,500 By Richard Gary
FOX
M
ore than 1,500 people honored seven heroes in the movement for LGBT equality at a reception hosted by the National Center for Lesbian Rights’ 35th Anniversary Celebration recently in San Francisco, California. The sell-out event celebrated the strides made in the LGBT movement and recognized trailblazers who have stood up for equality, becoming role models for millions of people in the process. Executive Director Kate Kendell, noting that this was the 35th anniversary of NCLR, pointed out that the march for equality is an ongoing struggle, emphasizing the importance of honoring those “who continue to speak out against injustice and are helping change the legal landscape for every member of our community.” Amongst those honored by the NCLR was famed Glee star Jane Lynch, who received the Vanguard Award for furthering LGBT equality. Lynch has lived an authentic life as an out lesbian while achieving great success and visibility in television and film. Grateful for the honor, Lynch said, “I feel like we all should be honoring NCLR for their achievements.” NCLR also presented the Courage Award to its six, young clients—Brittany Geldert, Damian McGee-Backes, Dylon Frei, Ebonie Richardson, Kyle Rooker, and Kyrstin Schuette—who last year filed a federal sexual-orientation and gender discrimination
Jane Lynch lawsuit against Minnesota’s Anoka-Hennepin School District, challenging a policy that prevented staff from protecting them from antiLGBT bullying. “This is a very special day for us,” said Frei. “It wasn’t too long ago that I was extremely unhappy, and decided to be home schooled rather than face constant taunts from classmates.” The young student then said the lawsuit enabled her to “find myself, and be proud to be out, and someone who is unafraid to speak up. I learned that one voice is enough to create change…”

Documentary explores how today’s youth are dealing with HIV/AIDS
By Gideon Grudo
H
IV affects many aspects of life including dating, sleeping, eating and loving. A new film explores how age factors into the disease. LOGO TV’s new documentary Positive Youth attempts to take a look at the world of young people with HIV/AIDS, defining “young” as late teens to age 27. The film follows four people in four U.S. cities, capturing both direct interviews and candid moments. From their goals and ambitions to their family and friends, the story shows how they each specifically chose to deal with their affliction, and what ultimately came of their efforts. It’ll premiere on May 19. The film comes from Charles David, a TV personality known for work with E! and the Travel Channel. He made the movie in hopes of reconfiguring the popular notion of AIDS — the one born out of the 1980s — and replacing it with a more modern, young perspective. “I felt there was a huge disconnect in public awareness about the advancements in HIV medication and research,” David said. “We made this documentary to educate those who know little of HIV, shed light on the rise of HIV infection among today’s youth, give hope to people living with HIV and let them
12
know that they are not alone.” The four people in the documentary are supposed to represent four different situations of people living with HIV. There’s an 18-year-old woman from a poor town, a 25-year-old man living in a major city, a 23-year-old African American and a 27-yearold performer. “We now have the tools to turn things around. Medication plays a key role in prevention and living a long life,” said Austin Head, one of the four youths in the film. “Medicine is the reason the virus in my system is at undetectable levels. This eliminates nearly all possibility of transmission to a loved one. There are still a lot of people who don’t know they have options and I wanted to be a part of this film to help share that story.” The film will air in the U.S. on Saturday, May 19 at 8 p.m. on LOGO TV. Locally, the film will be showcased during the Wolfsonian Museum’s new exhibition Graphic Intervention: 25 Years of International AIDS Awareness Posters 1985–2010. The exhibition, running from May 11 to Sept. 9, is composed of 153 posters from different communities to show how various societies represent HIV visually. Tear-Jerker Video Goes Viral
SFGN goes behind the scenes of the tragic story By Gideon Grudo
D
ays before President Obama made his historic announcement supporting gay marriage, a YouTube video detailing everything that could go wrong for a gay couple that was not married when one partner dies went viral. The 10-minute tear-jerker is titled It Could Happen to You (http://bit.ly/K8ijNi). The video was posted on Sunday, May 6, by Shane Crone (user shanebitneycrone) and already has more than 2 million hits. Through pictures, video clips, text and voiceover, Crone explains his relationship with Tom Bridegroom, from its beginning to its end. “On May 7, 2011...” The video text reads, “Tom fell from this rooftop... And died.” Little more information is given about this untimely death, other than the fact that Crone was kept from knowing its details and circumstances because he wasn’t family — because gay marriage isn’t legal. Crone doesn’t say in the video if the rooftop death was a suicide or not, and at least one outlet must have written that Bridegroom took his own life, triggering this tweet from Crone (@ShaneBitney): “@UnicornBooty Tom didn’t take his life. It was an accident. Please edit your post. Thank you.” Unicorn Booty’s article now makes no mention of a suicide. Bridegroom also had a Twitter account (and a MySpace page). His last tweet: “I hear you had a bit of a night last night ;) RT @ carriepichel: Looks like @agentcoco & @ tombridegroom are enjoying some bubbly without me!” According to his IMDB page, Bridegroom was born on April 22, 1982 in Knox, Indiana. He was 29 when he passed. The LA-based actor is perhaps most well known for hosting the X-Effect in 2007, the first of its three-season lifespan. A year earlier, he’d appeared in an episode of Las Vegas. Bridegroom was a model and photographer, which is why he was on top of a building when he fell to his death. “Tom Bridegroom fell to his death while photographing a model,” reads a May 10, 2011 article in the Mads Vassar Blog, an outlet at Vassar College in New York State. “According to one source, he accidentally stepped off the balcony of a building in the Silver Lake neighborhood and fell four stories.” This one source identifies himself as David Aguilera on a CBS LA blog, in answer to someone who’d
posted a question about Bridegroom’s death. “It was a tragic accident,” Aguilera wrote. “He was photographing a model on top of a building in Silver Lake and stepped back too far and fell 4 stories.” Bridegroom’s Wikipedia page offers little more, most of it telling the story of Crone after Bridegroom’s passing. Crone concludes his video explaining that his treatment by Bridegroom’s family, who wanted nothing to do with him and barred him from the funeral and memorial, may have been the push he needed to become an activist. “I can’t just stand back anymore,” Crone says to the camera. “Maybe that’s why this all happened... I just don’t know if people will listen — I guess no one will listen if I don’t talk.” The video ends with a call to arms and responsibility for people to protect their loved one, regardless of their sexual orientation. Activist group EqualLoveEqualRights, whose Facebook page is also listed under the video, claims it is dedicated to the memory of Bridegroom (here’s his memorial Facebook page), and offers resources on items like living wills. “You will also find links to websites that provide information regarding the legal forms EVERY PERSON should have, as well as how to fill them out on your own,” the group’s About Me page reads. “Don’t let tricky legalese or lack of funds prevent you from filling out these forms--you do not need an attorney to protect you and/or your loved ones.” Native to Kalispell Montana, 26-year-old Crone has appeared in almost every award show out there, from the Emmys to the MTV Movie Awards, according to his IMDB page. He’s been in two movies, most prominently Left in Darkness. The song ‘Beautiful Boy’ in Crone’s video comes from singer/songwriter Coleen McMahon. Her iTunes page, Facebook and Youtube channel are listed in the video’s info tab. SFGN has reached out to Crone through email, Youtube and Facebook. As of press time, he has not responded.

t appears the Obama campaign is cashing in on his recent endorsement of gay marriage by launching an LGBT merchandise store selling items with pro-LGBT messages. The collection includes shirts that read “Obama Pride: LGBT for Obama,” “My two moms support Obama,” and “I’m out for Obama.” Other items being sold are buttons, can holders, placards, and a poster. The merchandise ranges in price from $5 to $30 with a $40 party pack, which comes with a bumper sticker, placard, button combos, a car magnet, and an LGBT for Obama V-Neck Tee. Patriots will also enjoy the store because everything is made in the USA.

Gay Issues: The New Normal
A
cceptance of gay and lesbian relations is apparently the new normal – at least according to a newly released Gallup Poll. The poll shows for the third year in a row that a majority of Americans believe gay relations are morally acceptable. The poll found that 54 percent find gay relations morally acceptable to 42 percent that find them not acceptable. That’s up from 38 percent in 2002 and down from 56 percent in 2011. The poll also found 50 percent believes gay marriage should be legal while 63 percent believe gay and lesbian relations between consenting adults should be legal compared to 31 percent who do not believe so. A new CBS News/New York Times Poll found similar results except they divided the marriage question into same-sex marriage or civil unions. Combined 62 percent support some form of legal recognition with 38 percent supporting marriage equality, 24 percent supporting civil unions and 33 percent opposed to any recognition.

Mariela Castro, a noted gay rights advocate and head of Cuba’s National Center for Sex Education, also repeated her praise for U.S. President Barack Obama’s public remarks in favor of same sex marriage, saying the American leader’s words “have great

value because of the influence they might have’’ on others. Still, she said Obama needed to back his words with action. While the U.S. president voiced support for same sex marriage, there were no plans in the U.S. to get behind federal legislation to mandate states to recognize such unions. Castro’s comments came during a colorful march by 400 advocates through the sweltering streets of the capital. The event is linked to the International Day Against Homophobia on May 17. Participants, including transvestites and transgender people, sang and danced in a conga line. Castro has predicted for years that Cuba’s parliament was on the verge of legalizing gay marriage, but it has yet to happen. She said she hoped legislators would finally follow through when they next meet in July. Castro said her father had voiced support for the measure privately several times, and indicated he was working behind the scenes in support of a reform of the island’s family law. “It is surely part of his tactics and strategy; it is his style,’’ she said. ``I am not going to pressure him to say things publically, because I am more interested in concrete results.’’ In the early years after Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution, homosexuality was considered highly suspect, along with other “alternative’’ forms of expression. Many gays were fired from government jobs, jailed, sent to work camps or left for exile. Fidel Castro later apologized for the discrimination, saying his past views on homosexuality were wrong, and a product of the times.

I am happy to hear of President Obama’s recent interview where he now supports gay marriage. Most people who are not gay just do not understand nor feel the discrimination or inequality toward gays. Not to mention the entire unfair bi-national marriage rights thing for gays. I have two friends that married their spouses from overseas and were able to bring them and get them here to the states with resident visas via marriage without any problems as they are heterosexuals.I cannot do that with my partner from Colombia, because we are gay. The USA needs to address this inequality and so many others like the perk married couples get when filing taxes jointly, there are hundreds of marriage benefits for tax purposes married couple receive. Many heterosexuals just do not feel or see the discrimination because it is not happening to them, a majority should not be able to vote for a minority, the Supreme Court has shown this and overturned many unfair laws, like ones toward special education populations. We should be protected and all should be treated with fairness and dignity. I cannot marry my partner here in Florida and I cannot bring him from overseas because even if gays could marry, the federal government is not recognizing gay marriage for immigration purposes. I love the quote by Albert Einstein that says, “A man must learn to understand the motives of human beings, their illusions, and their sufferings.” How many of us really understand the sufferings of gays and all they have to tolerate and put up with, all the injustice and inequality? Gays are often treated like freaks and taunted throughout their entire lives, treated differently, very seldom being completely accepted. I applaud President Obama for finally taking a stand on marriage equality. Gays deserve every single right that heterosexuals have now in this country. Two people’s love should not be denied because of their gender. We need 100 percent marriage equality for gays! Peace, Joseph Furner Lake Worth, Florida

McNaught’s Notes
Sydney, Age 15, Wants to Help By Brian McNaught
“M
y name is Sydney…I am 15 years old …and need help. Although I am not gay, I am helping to try to make a difference at my school. I go to a sports school, and the whole ‘tough guy’ attitude is a big problem here. The kids at my school are very homophobic, and I am outraged because I am constantly hearing the word “fag” used by kids that don’t really understand who they are hurting by saying it. We have many assemblies about the subject but everyone takes it as a joke, and then, the next day, it’s back to the same problem. If there is a gay person at my school, then they are keeping it very hidden. My biggest fear is that they will hear the hateful word spoken by their peers, and end up going into depression or worse. I would love to hear about what you think I should do.” You’re a terrific straight ally, Sydney, and your loving, thoughtful life is going to have a very positive impact on the happiness of many people. The fact that you are trying to make a difference at age 15 truly inspires me. Thank you. I’m proud of you, as I hope you are of yourself. I recommend that you contact www.gaystraightalliance.org, and inquire about starting a Gay/Straight Alliance at your school, as has been done by over 4,000 schools in the U.S. alone. What your fellow students need is to see straight students standing up with confidence saying that, “It’s not okay to be anti-gay.” Every time they use the word “fag,” they need to hear someone they respect say, “Knock it off. That’s not cool.” Or they should hear, “Hey, I’ve got gay people in my life. You’re creeping me out.” Eventually, the ignorant ones will get educated and be quiet, if not supportive. It works all the time, and has throughout history on every issue of difference. I know that it’s scary to stand up to your peers. Believe me, it doesn’t get a whole lot easier when you’re an adult. A lot of straight people in families and in corporations are afraid of speaking up in defense of the gay people they know and love. But I promise you, Sydney, when you do step forward and speak with a strong voice, other people will listen to you, and most people will agree with you. A lot of people feel as you do, but they don’t have the courage to say anything. The world is changing because of people like you. My spouse, Ray, and I just saw the film 21 Jump Street. In it, two young cops pretend to be high school students, and discover that everything has changed since they were
in school. When they learn that it’s not okay to be anti-gay, one of them insists it’s because of the television program Glee. In Glee, straight students protect the gay students, as well as students with disabilities, students of different races and religions, and most recently, students who are transgender. It’s often harder for older people to change their views and behaviors than it is for younger people to do so. Young people have to deal with peer pressure, but their minds haven’t yet been made up. When young people are exposed to differences that are treated with respect, as happened with me when I was in first grade, they don’t use bad names to describe people who are different. When I was seven years old, three of my best friends were black, short-statured, or Jewish. Biases don’t have a chance to take root when the people around you let you know that being different is cool. There are a lot of schools, perhaps yours too, that have “zero tolerance” policies on bullying. Many of them have assemblies, like those at your school, in which someone tells
May 16, 2012 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com
the students that bullying other students will not be tolerated. But until the students, faculty and staff are made personally aware of the impact of bullying, and until they hear from their peers that bullying isn’t acceptable, nothing changes. Policies don’t change culture. One-on-one personal experiences change culture. It’s been nearly 50 years since I was your age, Sydney, and believe it or not, people who I was nice to in grade school and high school continue to contact me to say what a difference it made in their lives. They remember feeling small and insignificant, and having a popular kid be nice to them. I was on the
phone a few days ago with someone I hadn’t seen since I was your age. He was bullied at home and in school because of undiagnosed dyslexia. But he felt safe hanging around people like me who didn’t make fun of him, or who didn’t think of him as stupid. The lives of the younger LGBT students who follow you in school will be far happier because of you, Sydney. A straight kid with no personal investment spoke up on their behalf. You’re challenging your peers on their hostility toward gay people may not make all of the other students into allies, but it will make all of them think. And because they start thinking that maybe their behavior is unacceptable to a popular straight kid, they’ll start thinking before they speak. And if they think before they speak, maybe the children who are born to them who happen to be gay will have an easier time of it, all because of you, Sydney. I promise you that if you announce a meeting for all the students at your school who see themselves as allies to LGBT, the meeting room will be full. Initially, you might get push-back from those who don’t want things at school to change, but in a short amount of time, you and your group will be respected, and your work will make a difference in the school culture. You’re now one of my heroes, Sydney. Thank you for being my ally. I promise to be yours too.

Gay Leaders React to Obama’s Support for Marriage Equality Local Leaders Comment On Obama Endorsing Gay Marriage
submitted photoS
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings I commend President Obama on his decision to formally support same-sex marriage. It is high time that gay and lesbian Americans are afforded the same rights, benefits, and protections of marriage as heterosexual couples. President Obama took an important step towards achieving true marriage equality on February 23, 2011, when he and Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Department of Justice (DOJ) would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court. DOMA allows states to refuse to recognize samesex marriages performed in other states as well as federally defines marriage as between one man and one woman. President Obama and Attorney General Holder determined that a crucial provision of DOMA violated the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment. Today, the President showed real leadership in the ongoing struggle for LGBT equality by announcing his support for same-sex marriage. It is my sincere hope that our nation will follow the President’s lead in recognizing the equal rights of all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Republican Scott Herman, running for state representative, district 94 I was happy to hear the President come out for gay marriage, however I noticed his wording. The fact remains that it’s now 2012 and the eight year mark is coming up in October when even President Bush, a Republican, told Charlie Gibson on ABC News on Oct. 26, 2004 that he didn’t have an issue with states supporting domestic partnerships or civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. In 2004 that was a major step in the right direction. President Obama, spoke out now some four years ago and also during his current term about his legal knowledge and being the President of “CHANGE” yet the President’s Constitutional knowledge, failed when it came to the 1st & 5th amendment “Due Process Clause,” 9th and last five words of the 10th “since he spoke of States Rights but forgot the people,” and the 14th “Equal Protection Clause.” The President should have done this some time ago. As the head of the Democrat party why was he unable to get the votes to repeal DADT and DOMA prior to the midterms? The Democrats had the House, had 60 votes in the Senate to stop any filibuster and could have, if equality was truly a concern, repealed DADT and DOMA. However he waited and waited, and it took Republican U.S. Senators to get involved to obtain the REAL ACTION with DADT to pass it out of U.S. Senate as a bipartisan measure and we are still stuck with DOMA.

Robin Schwartz, executive director of the Aqua Foundation Our community has always felt that President Obama supported gay marriage. What we didn’t know was when he would take the step to say it out loud. It is clear many in our society are evolving towards the belief that LGBT men and women deserve the same rights as other men and women have. With President Obama’s leadership we are one step closer to realizing these rights.
Rand Hoch, president of Palm Beach County Human Rights Council The uncompromising efforts of lesbian and gay marriage equality activists on the national, state and local levels helped lay the groundwork for today’s historic announcement by President Obama. The President’s message today clearly demonstrates the change he promised in back 2008. Unfortunately, here in Florida we will have to wait for for the courts to strike down the discriminatory provisions in our state law and constitution before marriage equality will become a reality in the Sunshine State.
CJ Ortuno, executive director, SAVE Dade “The President has made a gutsy decision in the face of a major election to stand on the right side of history. Ultimately the president evolved to a place of understanding that we all have when it comes to marriage - that it is not about politics, but about love, commitment, and being responsible for the person you care most about.”
Facebook Readers React to Obama Announcement Alex Wall – A mixture of relief and disappointment... relief because I think many feel this was a long time coming, and it’s a powerful endorsement. Disappointment because I feel this announcement should have come much sooner, when it might have done some good in raising awareness about the vote on Amendment One and similar measures in other states. You can’t count the votes of people who don’t show up, and the opposition in NC (and others) took advantage of that silent, neutral majority that didn’t show up. Erinn Moore – All I can say is whether it’s a political move or not, the gay community really needs to quit whining and get on the same page for once. If they vote Romney, they are seriously screwing themselves and others. Don’t come crying when your rights are stripped away. Anthony Cicalese – Very much appreciated. I remember one of George W. Bush’s State of the Union addresses, where he opened with the threat of Saddam Hussein, and then his #2 concern was gay marriage. I felt like we were “Public Enemy #2.” With our 5-year wedding anniversary fast approaching, I found both Vice President Biden’s remarks and President Obama’s announcement heartening and encouraging. Frank Polo – Obama just keeps getting better and better! “lean forward...” Brian Tyler Leonard – Gay Marriage Could Give The Economy A Much-Needed Boost “If President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage does convince more states to follow suit with full-fledged legislation, it could free up a lot of cash along the way.” .................... so says a article in the www.huffingtonpost. com but we all need to remember that this is an election year!!!!! This movement has been going on for the last 4 years and not a word but all of a sudden?????? Wake up people!! We need your votes is what is really going on behind the scene! 4 more years of change??? i am not sold on either candidates , I want Hillary! Jeffrey Baker – I think it hurt his chances but then again it will be interesting to see if Christians vote a Mormon in office too....I like Brian wants Hillary! Art Greenwald – I’m sure there are some interesting, thoughtful and provocative posts and reactions to the President’s bold and courageous move yesterday. I have chosen not to read any of them for now. And here’s the reason. There have been very few and rare moments in the past two-three decades that I have been proud of anything our country and so-called leaders have done. Yesterday was a pleasing exception and cause for hope. And, while I respect and value most opinions and beliefs, I’m not interested in debating this with anyone now, nor will I allow anyone here to ruin a beautiful, historical moment. It’s simple. You either believe all people are entitled to the same rights, protections and liberties or you choose to honor old, decaying traditions that stand in the way of 10 percent of your fellow Americans’ happiness and wellbeing. Civil rights and equality should never be put on a ballot, put up for a popular vote. Marriage? Never been a huge fan of it. As we’ve seen, it leads to divorce 50 percent of the time, a world of pain and heartache and it’s unfortunately the innocent kids who suffer the deep scars for a long time which irreparably harms their future relationships. This is fact. Nothing disrespects the institution more than divorce. That’s what we need to be morally indignant about. You don’t need a piece of paper, a Biblical verse, a legislative amendment or a ceremony to have a committed, loving, caring, healthy relationship. Everyone with a heart knows that. In a civil society, (if you follow the news, the jury’s still out on us), two loving people should be allowed to marry whomever they want. It’s no business of mine and it should be no business of yours. Love is love and if you haven’t grasped that basic truth of life yet, nothing I state here will ever change your mind nor your heart.

Manalapan Theater Turns Back Clock for Upcoming Shows
Plaza Theatre
By J.W. Arnold
T
he iconic sounds of the 1970s will be showcased in three shows coming to Manalapan’s Plaza Theatre. “I Write the Songs,” “Mandy” and “Copacabana” are a few of the songs of composer and performer Barry Manilow featured in I Am Music, a musical revue that opened last weekend. Created by Fort Lauderdale director Kevin Black, the show got its start years ago when the producer was asked to create a revue for a corporate event. With a cast of four men and women accompanied by glamorous dancers, the plot loosely strings together 24 songs as a group of friends put together a show bound for Broadway. Act one focuses on the romantic entanglements of the two couples as they assemble the production, while act two features the Broadway debut. Plaza’s producing director, Alan Jacobson, knew Manilow’s tuneful melodies would be a hit for the new company, which took over the Manalapan strip mall space vacated by the now defunct Florida Stage more than a year ago. While Jacobson knew local audiences would support “serious” theater, he wanted to reach out to a broader audience. And, in a tough economy, he had to keep his expenses under control. “We’re staying ‘light’ right now with the revues,” he admits, “but we’re trying to put on good shows and get our work out there.” While his young company has not targeted gay audiences, he has planned a season that will appeal to many. I Am Music will be
20
followed next month with Don’t Rain on Our Parade, another musical revue, this time celebrating the hits of three gay icons: Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Carole King. Jacobson has cast three popular local singers, Missy McArdle, Shelley Keeler and his wife, Melissa Jacobson, to sing the divas’ hits. He promises wonderful arrangements, but no impersonations like audiences might expect at local gay clubs. The summer is rounded out with The Way We Were, another revue, this time celebrating the diverse musical styles of the ‘70s. “We’ll be portraying a musical journey, if you will, a look back from the late ‘70s to the end of the ‘60s and back again,” Jacobson explains. “It will be about hippies turning into yuppies and feature some of the lighter, popular music of the time period.” He hints there may even be some disco, but expect lots of beautiful ballads and anthems, including “If Ever I Saw Her Face,” and “American Pie.” While the musicals are fun and suit the resources of the new company, he’s also anxious to tackle some serious dramas. The remainder of the 2012-13 season includes Driving Miss Daisy, the story of a Southern matron and her African-American driver, in November and Next to Normal, the awardwinning musical about a family’s battle with mental illness, set to run next January.

Dance for the Street
LGBT event aims to raise funds to end youth homelessness By Gideon Grudo
T
he night will range from karaoke to dancing to a raffle — and it’s all to support homelessness. Hosted in Fort Lauderdale’s PJ’s Corner Pocket, ‘From Homeless to Housing’ will be a fundraiser to try and get LGBT youth off the streets. The event is presented by Deon Davis, author of I’ll Find A Way and all-around LGBT do-gooder. The public is invited to the May 19 event, which the flyer said ends “when the fun stops.” Attendees are encouraged to donate what they can for a struggle that poses a serious problem in South Florida — the minimum donation is five bucks. According to Davis, this issue has to become a non-issue. Her son came out when he was 15 (he’s now a happy 21-year-old student out in California). While he faced little problems relatively, his LGBT friends didn’t fare as well. As many of them got kicked out as they came out, they would end up living with Davis, whose door she kept open. And so, her four-bedroom house in Tamarac became a sanctuary for many LGBT youth — and by extension their stories. “I’m just a mother with a gay son who opened up a new world to me. I see the bullying, I see the fights that he has to fight. I see the homelessness of his friends. I see the rejection that they face,” Davis said. “No one was turned away. You never knew they hadn’t been here in the past. Two chickens from Penn Dutch fed everyone in the house.” Davis wrote her book about her son’s experiences and hers. She uses money she’s made
off the publishing to support more homeless teens, but wanted to take it a step further. “I need to use this money to get homeless, gay teens off the street,” she said. “It’s time for me to do something.” Patrick Carron knows Davis well and is on the board of the National Association of Black and White Men Together, a non-profit that aims to keep interracial couples together and respected by the community. When the organization had its annual convention in Fort Lauderdale several years back, Davis spoke at it. “She talked a lot about her vision to help gay youth,” Carron said. “I really couldn’t believe that they got kicked out of their house because they told their families they were gay.” Davis hopes to see people show up and support her goal: To educate these LGBT teens with skills, get them in school and on their way to successful lives. One of them, she said, she lost to the streets — she doesn’t want that to ever happen again. “He goes right back to the streets, and selling his body for drugs,” she said. “I need to do this myself because it’s in my heart.” If You Go
When: Saturday, May 19, 7 p.m. Where: P J’s Corner Pocket 924 N. Flager Drive Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 How Much: Minimum Donation: $5 (feel free to give more)

reative, diverse, friendly, unpretentious and welcoming are words often used to describe Nashville. It has long been a destination rich in cultural, musical and entertainment options that appeal to everyone, including the LGBT traveler. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville is home to dozens of arts organizations, historical landmarks, James Beard awardwinning restaurants and fabulous entertainment and nightlife venues. “Music City has so much to offer the LGBT traveler. It is an open-minded city that has always been a welcoming place for anyone looking for great entertainment options. The creative spirit is what drives Nashville, so it goes without saying that we want to encourage everyone to visit our beautiful city,” says Butch Spyridon, president of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau. In addition to the attractions noted in the supporting documents, Nashville is home to the state’s largest HIV/AIDS organization, Nashville CARES, the Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce and the Oasis Center, an organization designed to support and educate LGBT youth. Nashville is headquarters to dozens of national and international corporations including Bridgestone, Cracker Barrel, Hospital Corporation of America and Country Music Television, all of whom have made efforts to support the LGBT community through sponsorship in various organizations or employee diversity programs.
