Teen radio show host says Obama ‘makes kids gay’

A

YouTube video of Caiden Cowger, 14-yearold who hosts a conservative radio talk show in West Virginia, was posted last week where the teen claims that “President Obama is making kids gay,” and says that 30 kids he knows who weren’t gay when they were growing up have now decided to subscribe to the “belief” of homosexuality. Since then, Cowger’s rant was removed due to the YouTube’s policies against hate speech and his show shut down. More surprising than his comments was the fact that a 14-year-old hosted a political radio show.

One million ultra-bored moms boycott JC Penney ad

F

or the second month in a row, religious conservative organization One Million Moms called on mothers nationwide to boycott JC Penney. Last time it was for a lesbian moms ad, now it’s for a Father’s Day ad featuring a gay couple and their children that the retail giant printed on its June catalog. “JCP is continuing down the same path of promoting sin in their advertisements,” OMM wrote on their website. People expressed support for the dads on the Internet. JC Penney? They are not taking calls from OMM.

o, that wasn’t a typo. Moscow upheld a new law that bans any gay pride celebrations in the city for the next 100 years. The only chance for LGBT activists in the country is to take the issue to the European Court of Human Rights, which Russia recently became a member of. According to the Advocate magazine, Madonna said she intends to “speak up for the gay community, to support the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed,” at her upcoming concerts in St. Petersburg and Moscow this August.

Porn Shy Marriott Hosting 2013 Leather Fetish Show

By Richard Gary

C

hicago’s Michigan Avenue Marriott will be hosting the International Mr. Leather fetish show next year. There is a touch of irony there. This is the same hotel chain that has banned porn rentals from their guest rooms. So the hotel of no porn goes to a paradise of rubber suits, harnesses and leather whips and chains. Cute. “All politics is local, and that hotel wants more business,” International Mr. Leather coordinator John Krongaard told the Chicago Sun-Times. “They [the hotel] know exactly who we are, and I think that’s kind of neat.” The primarily gay event was held on Memorial Day weekend this year at the Hyatt Regency hotel just down the street from the Marriott. This year’s conference drew more than 17,000 attendees and crowned Woody Woodruff International Mr. Leather 2012. Anyone who approached the hotel was warned by large signs that the facility was

closed for the weekend with a sex-themed event not for the faint of heart. Even entry into the Leather Mart public festival of kinky excitement required patrons to sign a general release acknowledging they were participating in a sexually oriented festival. A spokesman for the Michigan Avenue hotel, Dan Preston, told the Sun-Times that securing the convention was a “lucrative” deal for the hotel and it was happy to have the group. It will be interesting to see what Bill Marriott of the hotel chain will do when the contract lands on the desk of their corporate offices. But Stephanie Hampton, a spokeswoman for the Marriott, apparently told online content provider, Xbiz, that the hotel chain “accepts all business unless it could put other guests in danger... we are a public company and provide public accommodations, and we embrace everyone as customers regardless of their sexual orientation, race or ethnicity.”

HIV Is a Crime By Gideon Grudo

R

obert Suttle broke up with his boyfriend in 2003. He was HIV-positive, and his partner pressed charges against him after the relationship ended. Suttle spent 180 days in prison and was on probation for two years. Underneath his photo on his driver’s license are two words in capital letters: SEX OFFENDER. Gay, black, HIV-positive, and now a convicted felon, Suttle was afraid for his future in Louisiana, where HIV criminalization laws allowed this all to happen. “I am not a criminal. I am not a sexual offender,” Suttle said when it was his turn to speak. “This is my life and that’s why I’m here.” He was speaking at a panel in Wilton Manors. The Positive Justice Project and Positively U, two organizations that battle the criminalization of HIV, put up the June 6 roundtable. It all took place at the Hagen Park Community

6

Center, where about thirty people showed up to listen and ask questions. Three speakers explained from various angles how national laws, and Florida’s laws, are counterproductive to the battle against HIV. Suttle, a high-ranking official with the Sero project, another anti-HIV criminalization organization, was one of the speakers. He shared his story about his partner and how their relationship had been on the rocks. He said he had disclosed to his partner that he was positive, but none of this mattered when that partner later pressed charges. The law leaves the burden of proof on him, a burden impossible to bear. Thirty-six states in the U.S. have laws of this kind. According to Beirne Roose-Snyder, the managing attorney at the Center for HIV Law and Policy, two types of behavior can be criminal if the defendant is HIV-positive: biting and spitting, and sexual contact. The

Panel confronts myths and realities of modern HIV criminalization across the country

Robert Suttle in Sean Strub’s ongoing documentary project ‘HIV is not a crime’ first is usually law-enforcement specific, as officers may deal with violence while arresting or at prisons or jails. The second is much more broad, and brings with it a slew of hardship on those accused of transmitting the virus. One of the major problems with these laws and statutes, Roose-Snyder said, is obsolescence. “They’re almost all coming from the 1990s. There’s a big disconnect between the era when these were introduced and the intent of Congress. The stigma was richer than it is today — it was considered a death sentence,” Roose-Snyder said, adding that the media doesn’t help this issue with how it publishes stories about it. “Those headlines, about predatory behavior, have a huge impact on the LGBT community both in how others view them and how they view their own sexual identity. There’s just this assumption that no one would ever knowingly have sex with someone who’s HIV-positive.” In Florida, there are two main laws that address the spread of HIV. One says a person who knows he or she is positive cannot have sex with another person unless the other person knows of his or her status and has consented. The other law forbids prostitution by those who are positive. The penalties range from a third-degree conviction and up to five years in prison to a firstdegree conviction and up to thirty years in prison, depending on the amount of partners the person had. (To see the laws in full, see the sidebar). According to Roose-Snyder, there is a significant amount of general ignorance about HIV in today’s public, leading to juries that are more biased than they should otherwise be. For example, she said, condom use

or a low viral load can rarely be used as a defense as a jury simply doesn’t understand these precautions’ effects. More importantly, though, juries don’t know the facts about the transmission of HIV, nor its effect on life expectancy. Instead, they know the myths, those propagated decades ago when HIV/ AIDS was much, much scarier. “There’s no intent to harm in Florida cases. It’s ‘Do you know that you’re HIV-positive?’ and ‘Did you disclose?’” Roose-Snyder said. “These laws haven’t had any positive effect. They’ve had a negative effect, worsening the stigma.” Brook Kelly, a human rights attorney with the US Positive Women’s Network, an organization working to improve life quality for HIV-positive women, explained the consequence of these laws on women. Kelly told the story of a woman who’d been interviewed by her organization in the past, a woman whose life was torn apart by allegations of wrongdoing. “She’d been living with HIV for some time and was living with a man who knew her status. They had a child together. When she left, she started finding notes written to her family and colleagues stating that she was positive, written by her ex. He then brought charges against her,” Kelly said. “She felt like, when she walked into the courtroom, that the judge had already passed a sentence. She just lost so much, and really it was a case of a personal relationship squabble.” After the ordeal, during which this woman was fired, it took her eight years to find a new job. Most importantly, Kelly emphasized that these laws have never improved the lives or status of women and that they never address the root cause of HIV or an attempt to squash it. “These laws isolate the people who may

need help the most,” she said. A nurse with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Sunny Isles resident Eleanor Garcia, offered up that she had a problem with decriminalizing HIV completely. She said that she sees patients coming in and finding out that they have HIV/AIDS and then turning around and not informing their partners. “What bothers me the most is that they know, and could have known for years,” Garcia said. “They could be married to someone who doesn’t know. The partner is being lied to.” Brook Kelly had an answer for this issue, which she said isn’t uncommon and comes up often. “Most people would agree that there’s an ethical responsibility to inform your partner, but it gets tricky when it’s mandatory or if a doctor breaches your confidentiality by informing your partner,” she said. “This would destroy someone’s trust in their doctor and the ability to get candid medical care.” And getting medical care is just part of the issue. Laws like these may cause people to stay away from diagnosis, the panel unanimously agreed, leading to health issues and propagating the severity of a disease that can otherwise be dealt with. On the flip side, the panel was surprised to hear another effect of these laws. It came from 57-year-old Clifford Downing, a soft-spoken AIDS caseworker who’d just moved to Florida. He came to the panel to get insight about how to help his clients and talk to them about this issue, but then he gave his own insight. “There’s a stigma of having to discuss it,” Downing said. According to him, many of his younger clients will just think that instead of talking about it repeatedly with their partner, friends and family, they just think: “‘I’ll get it and then it’ll be done with.’” And by getting it, they mean actually putting an effort into contracting the virus, so it may become a non-issue. “Maybe you should have more talks with your partner instead,” Downing advised young people considering doing the same thing. “Find a way to make your sexual relations more enjoyable.” Roose-Snyder ended the panel with a call to action. “Is the blunt instrument of legislation the way to effect change? The answer is no. Laws are very black and white, but this is the mess of human sexuality,” she said. “When we segment off HIV, we say it doesn’t matter that people keep other STDs from their partners.” The Positive Justice Project, along with the ACLU, Lambda Legal and others, have come together to push the Repeal HIV Discrimination Act, its purpose to give states the incentive they need to reconsider their existing policies as they relate to HIV. According to Roose-Snyder, none of the bill’s current 26 sponsors hail from Florida.

Florida’s HIV laws

Here are the two main Florida laws that pertain to HIV and its illegal transmission

Fla. Stat. Ann. 384.24(2) Unlawful acts relating to HIV exposure It is unlawful for any person who has human immunodeficiency virus infection, when such person knows he or she is infected with this disease and when such person has been informed that he or she may communicate this disease to another person through sexual intercourse, to have sexual intercourse with any other person, unless such other person has been informed of the presence of the sexually transmissible disease and has consented to the sexual intercourse.

Fla. Stat. Ann. 796.08(5) Prostitution with knowledge of HIV-positive status A person who commits prostitution, offers to commit prostitution or (by engaging in sexual activity likely to transmit HIV) procures another for prostitution, and who had previously tested positive for HIV and knew or had been informed of the test result and of the possibility of transmission to other through sexual activity is guilty of a third-degree felony.

Founder of the Stonewall National Museum & Archives

By Donald Cavanaugh

M

ark N. Silber is an openly gay man who grew up in South Florida and, in 1973, founded the Stonewall Library, which is now known as the Stonewall National Museum & Archives. “I always stop here when I’m in South Florida,” he said during an interview at the archives. “This time I’m here for my 40th high school reunion at Nova High School in Boca. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long.” Currently living in Philadelphia, Silber was born in Queens, NY and moved with his family to Hollywood, Fla when he was eight. “My parents wanted to raise their three kids in what they thought would be a more wholesome environment than Queens,” he said. “An aunt was living in Hollywood so they decided to come down here and settle in.” After Nova High, Silber matriculated at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton earning a degree in anthropology. When he realized that anthropology didn’t offer a lot of real life opportunities he took his father’s advice and studied gemology. As a certified gemologist, he has dealt in fine jewelry for many years including spending several years as manager of the jewelry shop aboard the Queen Elizabeth II.

“Remember,” he went on. “South Florida has an amazing history with gay rights even “Gay kids… do not know before Anita Bryant started spreading her their history nor what it poison. “That was an amazing experience,” he said, his eyes lighting up. “I was part of the captain’s cadre and got to sit at his table so I met all kinds of important people from theater, politics, and business from around the world.” Silber and some friends from FAU began gathering books for the Stonewall Library in 1973 largely through donations of volumes from their own libraries. The first collection was housed in a spare room in Silber’s parents’ home in Hollywood. It stayed there for almost 10 years when SunShine Cathedral MCC, which at the time was on SW 27th Street in Fort Lauderdale, offered to house the growing collection in a classroom on the church campus. “We needed a public place where people could come and read or do research,” he said. “My parents’ home just didn’t make it so we were lucky to get space at the MCC.” In 1984, Silber and his boyfriend at the time both got jobs in New York City. They were eager to experience life in one of the world’s cultural capitals so they packed up and left the library in willing hands. “I wasn’t worried about the library when I left South Florida,” Silber said. “I knew the people who succeeded me were committed to keeping alive our history and culture and judging by what we see today, I was right”

IKEA Wins Gay Biz Award By Gideon Grudo

I

t’s that time again — to celebrate the local LGBT heroes in Miami-Dade. The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) will be hosting its 11th Orange Gala on Saturday, June 23. The gala’s purpose is to point a cheering finger at the people who help promote LGBTQA businesses in the county. The event — to take place in the downtown Miami Hilton — will kick off with a champagne reception and silent auction, followed by dinner, award presentation and, finally, dancing. The Business of the Year Award goes this year to IKEA. MDGLCC gives the award to an organization whose commitment to diversity is unwavering in its inclusion of LGBT and allied community issue, according to a spokesperson. Among its reasons to award IKEA are a 2007 commercial in which the company featured a gay couple, and an IKEA Sunrise donation of new furniture and a kitchen to the LGBT Visitor Center and Chamber’s offices.

The chamber takes this as a sign that IKEA is acknowledging the LGBT community in an award-worthy manner. The Person of the Year Award this year goes to Steve Haas, owner of the City Hall restaurant. Haas uses his restaurant — and often his culinary mastery — to help promote various LGBT events and initiatives, like chamber meeting, for instance. He said that in less than a year, City Hall has hosted 50 events and helped host 30 additional events on other locations. “I’ve been supporting the LGBT chamber since it started,” Haas said. “I’d like to believe we’re a leader in the community — straight and gay. I’m very excited and very proud. Whatever the LGBT community needs, the answer is always yes.” The Non-Profit Organization of the Year Award goes to Miami Beach Visitor & Convention Authority (VCA). This award is similar to the Business of the Year Award, but focuses on non-profit organizations that promote the LGBT business environment and its people.

Off the Wall

Leviticus and the Gideons By Pier Angelo Rocky Raccoon checked into his room only to find Gideon’s Bible (The Beatles)

T

he first thing I do when I walk into a hotel room is go straight to the night stand open the drawer remove the Bible and toss it in the trash. Then I proceed to rearrange the furniture, clear all surfaces of the usual crap, unpack and finally help myself to the mini bar. Often I have to do it again the next day because, apparently, every hotel employs a large number of Gideons whose only job is to make sure there is a Bible stashed in every drawer at all times. Sorry but I can’t be in the same room with the book that for centuries has been used as a tool of gay oppression and the most accepted reason for discrimination against those who do not take out a membership card to the ‘One Book Only’ club. The hospitality industry must be the last hold out against Political Correctness. Why just the Bible? What about the Torah or the Koran? What kind of powerful lobbying do these Gideons have? I never met one. I don’t know what they look like. Are they an ethnic minority who specializes in printing Bibles?

• We finally make our first appearance in the Revised Standard Version of 1946 Let’s briefly look at some of the most commonly misused passages in the Bible and weep, plus some of the most ridiculous ones that can break the old Colgate Laugh-O-Meter at any time.

Does the “The Book” really and clearly states that Homosexuality is a sin?

Let’s take a quick look at the facts: • It was written a long time ago by many authors, at different times, translated over and over from various languages leaving the translators free to interject their bias into somebody else’s thoughts. These men surely practiced censorship, made errors, and provided embellishments on top of it. The latest book by the Pope, for instance, talks about the use of condoms as an assumption of responsibility, but in the German and English editions the text cites the example of a male prostitute, implying homosexual sex while the Italian edition uses the feminine form of prostitute instead. Just by changing a pronoun can lead to a completely different interpretation of the thought of the original writer. That’s called “Lost in Translation” and the Bible must be filled to capacity with this kind of errors. The word Homosexual does not appear in the King James Version, in fact the word itself was not coined until the end of the 19th century.

14

Leviticus -The Holiness CodeBesides the infamous “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination,” it also tell us not to shave, or wear fabrics of blended fibers or eat shellfish, and we are also told to stone disobedient children (the latter not a bad idea). The best is when it says that he who touches the skin of the pig shall also burn in Hell. So I guess Hell will be full of homosexuals and football players. If you are a fan of the sport it will be a nice place to be. Like having an NFL package for free 24/7. It seems a little bit too convenient to use Leviticus’ Code a la

carte and choose only those passages that fit a particular right wing Christian agenda. It’s all or nothing.

Romans 1:26-27

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. Since the time Paul wrote these words the world has dramatically changed. We no longer think that semen is the source of life, you need an egg or two to go with it in order to create it. The Earth is no longer the center of the solar system either. Paul was referring to pederasty and male prostitution. It was a condemnation of acts consistent with lust, avarice, exploitation, idolatry. None of these acts have anything whatsoever to do with a loving relationship or homosexuality. Paul was a man of his time and if all of his words must be taken literally then: • We should “beware of dogs” (Philippians 3:2) • Order slaves to obey their masters (Ephesians 5:4) • That it is better and easier to be near God if one eschews marriage and remains a virgin (Corinthians, Chapter 7), we never hear any member of “Focus on the Family” or those who crafted and passed DOMA quoting this passage. 26

To continue on the subject of family so dear to the Bible thumpers: Exodus 21:7 suggests selling your daughter into slavery. And for those who have more than one job to support themselves and their families, or are employed by the service industry Exodus 35:2 has no mercy, in fact if you insist working on the Sabbath, you should be put to death. Imagine a world without Happy Hour on weekends and no Sunday brunches.

Genesis - Sodom and Gomorrah (no they are not a Hip Hop duo) It is actually a story about nasty, arrogant, greedy, overfed people guilty of attempted rape. Traits that can be found among heteros and homos alike and have nothing to do with sexual orientation.

When they have exhausted the use of the Bible to condemn homosexuality the Christian Right turns to Jesus as its secondary weapon. The interesting thing is that of all the quotes attributed to Jesus in The New Testament, not one mentions homosexuality. These people are more obsessed with “males lying with males” than poverty and injustice — two subjects that were instead a big part of Jesus “socialist” philosophy. Sorry my Republican friends: Jesus was the original “pinko.” Many right wing Christians would not befriend him today. There is not enough talk about love in the Church nowadays. In fact one would think that, for example, God hates homosexuality, but loves the death penalty. If I were God I would be mighty annoyed with the manipulations going on around my name and the words of my son. After all the fundamentals of Christianity are very simply summed up by Jesus when he said: “Love the Lord God with your mind, all your heart, all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself, and on Judgment Day those who encountered the ‘least of my brethren’, the sick, naked, hungry, thirsty and imprisoned and did nothing for them will be shut out of heaven.” (Matthew 25). That throws a big monkey wrench into my eternal expectations. I had no intention of going to a place populated by the likes of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Republicans, Christian Right zealots and religious fanatics of any denomination. I was shooting for a crowd of fun party animals, lots and lots of homosexuals and football players. I envisioned Hell as a gigantic bath house, so I’ve been ready to go for awhile. Now, after rereading Jesus’ process of selection for the final ticket I’m sorely disappointed. I might actually end up in Heaven and be bored out of my skull for eternity. Oh well, might as well have fun now before it’s too late. After all as Don Koons said recently: “Hell is easy to define. It would be spending eternity with Evangelicals.” PS: “An Eye for an Eye and a Tooth for a Tooth” will leave you with a bunch of blind toothless people.

What Lady Gaga Stole from Jesus By R.E. Frederique ‘Catching My Breath’ is a personal ref lections column about gay life. If you want to ‘catch your breath,’ submit your stories to editor@southf loridagaynews.com’

Jesus hangs “out”

Y

ears ago, I opened a wine shop in upstate New York, shortly after moving there during a troubled time in my life. Fishkill Plains was a breathtakingly beautiful land with a small community of neighbors who looked out for each other. One such neighbor, Leo, who was in his early 90s, used to come to my store for his weekly fifth of Ernest and Julio’s Cream Sherry. Leo was a Jehovah’s Witness. Behind my counter, I kept a portrait of the Sacred Heart that my father had given me. It was my “protection.” When Leo noticed this image, he charitably offered to take me under his wings, not to convert me to become a Jehovah’s Witness, but so that I could become more familiar with the Bible. Since, at the time, I was grasping for “answers,” I happily agreed to go to his house every Sunday afternoon to study the New Testament. It was the most beautiful time of the year when the trees lit up with the multi-colored autumn leaves and the cold of the air had not yet gone into bitterness. One such afternoon, as Leo poured himself a cup of tea and I read a chapter he had assigned to me, a cat jumped at the nearby early-winter frosted window, as if trying to break in. This startled both of us and caused me to skip some verses in the Scripture. My eyes fell on Matthew 19:12. “What’s this?” I asked Leo. “Jesus is talking about eunuchs?” “What are you reading?” Leo snapped back.

It was the only time I ever saw him show anger. “You should only read the parts that I tell you to read! Otherwise, you wouldn’t know how to interpret what you’re reading.” “That’s odd,” I thought, as I found my way back to where I had left off before. “Why would Leo get so upset about reading the Bible. I thought the whole idea was to encourage me to read it?” Needless to say, the minute I got home, I found my way back to Matthew 19:12. It seems Jesus was hanging out with his celibate friends (which is what he did when he wasn’t performing miracles). At first glance, it looks as if it’s a lecture on divorce, as we would term it today. He was essentially saying that you can’t just leave your wife when you get tired of her. In the midst of this lecture, one of the disciples says, “Maybe it’s better not to get married at all.” I can only imagine this as a witty remark that caused all his buddies to chuckle. And here is the remarkable statement that has survived over 2,000 years: “Marriage is not for everyone,” Jesus answered as he goes into a categorization of “eunuchs” who are exempt from marriage. Much of the text didn’t make any sense as I read it. If we interpret the word “eunuch” as “castrated men,” by today’s definition — or even by the Greek definition meaning “The bedroom guard” — one has to start by asking why Jesus is concerned about a handful of such men (who served in the royal palace of Jerusalem) getting married to women. Some research on the word “eunuch” suggests the original language was either mistranslated or intentionally altered in later centuries. The word can be more logically traced back to one meaning “He who abstains,” or “He who is celibate.” Thus the phrase to be found in Matthew 19:12, if correctly interpreted is “There are those who are celibate who are born that way.” This Jesus said, some 2,000 years before Lady Gaga put it to music.

June 13, 2012 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

Of course, Leo was right in telling me that I could misinterpret the Bible if my reading is not tethered to someone else’s bias. But he was right only in that everything is open to interpretation. How we read the Bible depends on the environmental bias that we bring to the reading. Unless, of course, that bias is logic. And that bias can only exist if you are an atheist—because atheism takes faith out of the equation. As an atheist, I have no interest in the outcome of my interpretation. Is it logical that Jesus would be sitting around talking about the possibility of castrated men marrying women? Of course, it’s not logical— not even if he thought they could marry each

other, in a Biblical forewarning of same-sex marriage. The only logical interpretation is if he is talking about something else—not even about marriage. The only logical reading is if he is talking about homosexuality. (Just as he could not have been talking about divorce at a time when there was no word for such a thing, but more likely the subject was the treatment of women.) According to Matthew, this is what Jesus said: “Husbands should be faithful to their wives. But marriage is not for everyone. There are men who do not have sexual relations with women. They are born that way.”

ter what our sexual orientation or expression of gender might be: What we desire and what we do sexually, and how we live out our gender every day, are actually things God wants us to love about ourselves. I have watched lives change in very positive ways and deep spiritual wounds heal again and again when people have the opportunity to hear these words of affirmation and support from religious leaders and in places of worship. If you need this kind of change and healing in your life, it can happen for you too. No matter what anyone says, don’t let any person or religious institution force you to separate your spirituality from your sexuality or gender. The gender that is sacred for you, and the union of sex and spirit in your life are your absolute birthright. Each one of us deserves nothing less, and any religion or theology that says otherwise doesn’t deserve a nanosecond of your attention. Thankfully, here in 2012, there are churches and synagogues and places of many spiritual practices that are safe places for GLBT people. Somewhere there is a place for you where you can hear words of love for who you are. When you find that place, listen carefully to those words, and let them find a home in the deepest part of your being. They are the only words that are worthy of the beautiful creation you were made to be. Rev. Dr. Lea Brown is the Senior Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beaches, where people of all sexual orientations and genders are fully celebrated. www. mccpalmbeach.org

May: A Month of Anti-gay Rants Gone Viral By Sergio Candido

Here’s a rundown of each “man of God” and what they were caught saying to masses of followers: 1. Rev. Charles L. Worley of the Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, N.C. On a message reportedly delivered on May 13, the North Carolina pastor who called for gays and lesbians to put in an electrified pen and ultimately killed off. “Build a great, big, large fence--150 or 100 mile long--put all the lesbians in there,” World said in the video clip. “Do the same thing for the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can’t get out … and you know what, in a few years, they’ll die out … do you know why? They can’t reproduce!” Just a few weeks after the video was posted on YouTube, more than 1,000 protesters gathered in front of the Justice Center in Newton, a small town seven miles from the church, waving signs with messages such as “Will God judge me for loving or hating?” and “Don’t Fence Me In,” according to Reuters. 2. Ron Baity, founding pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. Ron Baity, founding pastor of WinstonSalem’s Berean Baptist Church and head of the anti-marriage equality organization Return America, said in a sermon that homosexuality was “a perverted lifestyle,” adding that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people should be prosecuted, according to LGBT blog Good as You, who reported the story on May 5. “For 300 years, we had laws that would prosecute that lifestyle,” Baity says. “We’ve gone down the wrong path. We’ve become so dumb that we have accepted a lie for the

ne said gays should be put in an electrified pen and then killed off, another one advocated parents should “punch” their male children if they seem effeminate. A third one called for government to do the dirty job and send homosexuals seven feet under. All in the name of God. These are just some of the hate-filled messages pastors and preachers (many from North Carolina) delivered to their parishioners this past May; caught on phone cameras for the whole world to watch on YouTube. Some have backed down due to mounting pressure and backlash, others have stood their ground on what they said.

truth, and we’ve...discarded the truth on the shoals of shipwreck!” 3. Pastor Sean Harris of the Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C. Another North Carolina pastor’s anti-gay rant made it to the web. This time it was Sean Harris, senior pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville. In a speech about North Carolina’s Amendment 1 (which had already passed), which defines marriage in the state constitution as the union between one man and one woman and outlaws civil unions and domestic partnerships, Harris took time to urge his congregation to “punch” their children if they seem effeminate. “Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that,” said the pastor in a video uploaded by Good as You on May 1. According to the Fayetteville Observer, the pastor later said he was joking in his sermon. “If I had to say it again, I would say it differently, no doubt,” Harris told the Observer. “Those weren’t planned words, but what I do stand by is that the word of God makes it clear that effeminate behavior is ungodly. I’m not going to compromise on that.”

5. Curtis Knapp of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kan. Pastor Curtis Knapp’s voice was recorded calling for the death of gays--by the government. “They should be put to death — that’s what happened in Israel,” Knapp said. “That’s why homosexuality wouldn’t have grown in Israel.” “Oh, so you’re saying we should go out and start killing them? No, I’m saying the government should. They won’t, but they should.” In a CNN interview about the controversial speech, Knapp said he stood by what he said. “We punish pedophilia. We punish incest. We punish polygamy and various things. It’s only homosexuality that is lifted out as an exemption,” he said. 6. Pastor Dennis Leatherman of the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church in Oakland, Md. This Maryland-based pastor went balls to the wall recently, saying he “kind of likes” the idea of killing LGBT people but “it’s wrong.” “First of all, there is a danger of reacting in the flesh, of responding not in a scrip-

tural, spiritual way, but in a fleshly way. Kill them all. Right? I will be very honest with you. My flesh kind of likes that idea...but it grieves the Holy Spirit. It violates Scripture. It is wrong,” says Dennis in the audio, uploaded by Good as You blog on May 29. In a statement posted on the church’s website, the pastor said that his words had been “misunderstood and taken out of context.” 7. Toddler singing gay hate song, Rev. Jeff Sangl and congregation applaud in Greensburg, IN. A phone video taken during a gathering at the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle church in Greensburg, Indiana, and then anonymously uploaded to YouTube last month shows a toddlers singing about gays not going to heaven to a standing ovation. ”The Bible is right, somebody’s wrong. Romans 1 and 27, ain’t no homos gonna make it to heaven,” sings the 4-year-old in the video. According to Channel 6 of Indiana, neither the church, nor its pastor, The Rev. Jeff Sangl, have replied to calls seeking comment.

4. Tim Rabon, pastor at Raleigh’s Beacon Baptist Church, N.C. This pastor condemned states such as Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maryland which have shown to be supportive of LGBT law reforms. In this recording uploaded on May 4 by Good as You, Rabon compares gay marriage with a union between a man and an animal. “What is stopping them from refining marriage from a person and a beast? We’re not far from that,” he asks his congregation.

Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus Presents “Comedy Tonight”

T

he Original Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, now in its 26th year, is busy preparing for its June concert. Under the direction of guest conductor and original founder Gary Keating, the Chorus will present Comedy Tonight, a fun, ‘R-rated’ show which includes a mixture of music and skits from top Broadway and other theatrical productions, such as The Producers, Sordid Lives, Altar Boyz, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Avenue Q. It will take place at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art Auditorium June 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $40 for premium seating. “It is wonderful to be in front of a gay

20

men’s chorus again. There is such a strong community about being in a gay chorus you don’t experience anywhere else. And, as an ‘out’ high school teacher, I can tell you that the GLBTQ choral movement is as vital today as it was 26 years ago when I started this chorus,” Keating said. The Chorus is part of Fort Lauderdale Performing Arts, Inc, which also includes the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Chorus. The Women’s and Men’s Choruses rehearse at St. Mark’s School in Oakland Park. Auditions for the Men’s Chorus will be held July, in preparation for the final concert of the season on September 28 and 29, also at the Museum of Art. The Chorus recently received a grant

from the John Graves Charitable Fund from the Community Foundation of Broward and also receives funding from the Broward County Cultural Division. Bradley Bush, the Chorus President, stated that without funding from these organizations, continuing to operate would be difficult. Ticket sales only provide about 40 percent of the revenue, so donations and grants are what keep the chorus going. The Men’s Chorus was the first gay performing arts organization in the State of Florida and led to the formation of other gay choruses in the state. The Chorus belongs to GALA, the international associa-

tion of gay and lesbian choruses. Visit www.theftlgmc.org, email info@ the ftlgmc.org or call 954 832-0060 for more information.

Essential Buddhism

What are the underlying causes of our suffering and dis-satisfaction? It seems like these are coming to us from outside, but even when we change our external situation, we never become free from problems. The origin of our cycle of impure life, samsara, is the delusions in our mind, such as anger, attachment, and self-grasping ignorance. This cycle of contamination continues in life after life, as long as these poisons remain in our mind. Once we see this, we can start to reduce these distorted conceptions, by following the path presented by Buddha. Eventually we will attain a final cessation of all delusions and the suffering they cause, a permanent liberation known as nirvana. $35 includes vegetarian lunch Come join this class at the Drolma Buddhist Center on June 23 from 10am-3p.m.. ake that “reincarnates” Rising Action. The former Rising Action Theatre, which developed a loyal following by featuring gay-themed plays but closed mid-season last year, is back this fall as Island City Stage. Artistic Director Andy Rogow has assembled a new board of directors and has embarked on plans for the company’s first production this August at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale. Last week, Rogow issued an audition notice seeking two male actors to star in Tom Jacobson’s Twentieth-Century Way. Tony-nominated director Michael Leeds will take the helm in this award-winning story about two actors auditioning for a film designed to entrap “homosexuals” for social vagrancy in Long Beach, Ca. circa 1914. The show is scheduled to run August 9 through September 9 at the intimate Flagler Drive theater. In his first productions with Rising Action at its former home at the Sunshine Cathedral, Rogow improved the production values and performances markedly. Expect more of the same with Island City Stage, especially after Rogow identifies a new venue and relocates the company to Wilton Manors.

South Florida Stars in Rock of Ages By J.W. Arnold

David james

D

irector Adam Shankman curled up on the coach at Miami’s Mandarin Oriental hotel as he reflected on “Rock of Ages,” the ‘80s jukebox musical filmed in South Florida and opening in theaters across the country this weekend. Locations across the region were transformed: North Miami Avenue became the Sunset Strip, Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale’s Himmarshee Village was rechristened The Bourbon Room, and even “Mt. Trashmore,” the monumental Coconut Creek landfill, got a cameo with the famous Hollywood sign. Hundreds of eager locals were on set day and night as extras, hoping for a glimpse of the film’s A-list stars. After a long day of interviews with the local press, Shankman admits with a giggle this is the only city where he’s been asked about filming in Florida. Newcomer, Julianne Hough, familiar as one of the celebrity hoofers on TV’s Dancing with the Stars, sitting next to him, is quick to jump in. “It was great staying on the beach,” she said, noting she began every day with a walk on the beach. When asked which she prefers, Miami Beach or California, Hough, making her debut as a leading lady, doesn’t hesitate, “South Beach.” But, after the chit chat, it’s back to business as the two plug their movie. Shankman acknowledged the challenges of adapting a Broadway musical for the cinema. Best known as a choreographer and one of the regular judges on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, his last turn in the director’s chair was the campy 2007 adaptation of Hairspray, starring John Travolta. While filming Rock of Ages,”he says he heeded advice offered years earlier by Hairspray writer/director John Waters. “He told me not to even try to remake his film or the musical, but to make my own movie….,” Shankman recalls, “to be true to my vision.” Rock of Ages, like Hairspray, was a hit on Broadway, but offered completely different demands. The show makes use of the rock anthems of the ‘80s, including songs by Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and Poison. The story centered around the romance of Sherrie (Hough), a small town girl from Oklahoma, and city boy Drew (Diego Boneta), who dreams of a career as a rocker. They meet at The Bourbon Room, a legendary bar where the careers of Sta-

Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian and Diego Boneta as Drew Boley in Rock Of Ages cee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) and his band Arsenal were launched. When the Mayor’s proper wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) launches a crusade to liberate the Sunset Strip from the evils of rock music, you can guess where the story goes. While Hough and steamy brown-eyed Boneta were relative newcomers, Shankman recruited some of the biggest names

available, including Cruise, Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti and Mary J. Blige. And, while Zeta-Jones and Blige are well known as singers, Shankman wasn’t taking a complete risk with his cast. “Believe it or not, I had heard everyone else sing at some point before……except Tom Cruise!” he said,”

but, he did a great job.” Shankman then turned to Hough and asked, “And how was it getting felt up all day by Tom Cruise?” referring to one of the crucial scenes in the movie. A blushing Hough only mustered a giggle. Talk about a hard day at the office. Judging from the results at a recent preview screening, it was definitely a job well done.

Musical’s Love Story Still Relevant Today

George Hamilton as Georges in La Cage aux Folles

By J.W. Arnold

I

n the 29 years since La Cage aux Folles opened on Broadway, societal attitudes about gays and marriage equality may have changed, yet the show remains as relevant as ever. The 1983 Tony Award-winning musical, with a book by Harvey Fierstein and score by University of Miami alum Jerry Herman, was an adaptation of a 1973 French play about a gay couple in Saint-Tropez: Georges, the owner of a drag club, and Albin, his romantic partner and the star attraction as his alter-ego, “Zaza.” When they learn Georges’ son is marrying the daughter of an ultra-conservative politician, the antics

30

begin as they try to conceal their flamboyant lifestyle. Since taking home Broadway’s top prize, the show has racked up two wins for best revival in 2004 and 2010, but the story is perhaps best known thanks to the 1996 feature film set in South Beach and starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. The 2010 touring production makes a stop at Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center this week as part of the Broadway Across America season and the center’s inaugural Pride Series. While headliner George Hamilton (Georges) is not stranger to Fort Lauderdale—he filmed Where the Boys Are 50 years

ago—Tony-nominated actor Christopher Sieber is making his first appearance in South Florida, portraying Albin/Zaza. A gay man who recently married his longtime partner, the relevance of La Cage is not lost on Sieber. “The funny thing is how many things have changed since (the show premiered),” he says. “It was such a big gamble back in the early ‘80s because it was just so gay, gay, gay.” Even then, Director Arthur Laurents and composer Herman took women as dates to the opening: “Those two queens took girls!” he chuckles. Sieber actually took the role at the encouragement of writer Fierstein, who

Christopher Sieber as Zaza

was playing Zaza. The original actor cast for the role quit suddenly and Sieber had just a week to learn the role. “I’ll never forget how he asked me in his gravelly voice,” Sieber says. And, when the production was ready to hit the road, Fierstein was committed, so producers asked Sieber to switch roles. It was a challenge, he admits. “Zaza is one of the most physically, emotionally and vocally demanding roles I’ve ever done,” he explains, adding, “and George only has three costumes. Albin has 15!” Despite the challenges, Sieber relishes the role. “I get the opportunity to make people laugh and fall out of their chairs and then a few minutes later, I have to make them cry,” says Sieber. He especially enjoys the opportunity to share the show’s story about love and acceptance, especially in areas that might not be as progressive as the East or West Coasts. He recently ended a run in North Carolina, which passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and was awed by the warm reception from audiences. Sure, he says, a few people walked out, but “too bad for them. City to city, it’s not the people. Everybody that I meet are fantastic. It’s the politicians and the talking heads on TV who are stirring the crap.” Sieber especially loves the end of the show as the husbands who were “dragged by their wives” end up standing and enthusiastically clapping as the cast takes their final bows. “This show has a lot of heart and if you don’t feel it during the show,” he says, “you should go see a doctor.”

Out Destination: St. Louis By Joey Amato

S

t. Louis, commonly referred to as “The Gateway to the West” is home to some of the country’s most recognizable corporations including Enterprise Rent-ACar, Edward Jones Investments Energizer, and of course, the city’s most popular company, Anheuser-Busch. The city is also home to three professional sports teams: The St. Louis Cardinals, Blues and Rams and is one of the LGBT capitals of the mid-west. Visitors arriving to St. Louis should take note of the MetroLink. The train system has two routes, is easy to navigate and is an inexpensive way to travel throughout the city. MetroLink connects Lambert-St. Louis International Airport to downtown as well as a host of other neighborhoods worth visiting including my personal favorite, Forest Park. Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. At 1,371 acres, it is approximately 500 acres larger than Central Park in New York City. Forest Park is home to the Art Museum, Science Center, Zoo, Jewel Box Greenhouse and History Museum, as well as a 7.5-mile biking, jogging and skating path. Most of these attractions are free of charge. The St. Louis Zoo is home to 655 species of animals, many of them rare and endangered. Catch a glimpse of the cheetah, African black elephant, lion and penguin habitats while enjoying a leisurely day with friends and family. Later this year the zoo will open Sea Lion Sound, combining a spacious new sea lion habitat with the zoo’s popular Sea Lion Show. A brisk walk through Forest Park will lead

you to another great attraction, the St. Louis Art Museum. The museum is among the nation’s leading comprehensive art museums with collections that include works of art throughout history. Most notable are the Chinese, pre-Columbian and 19th & 20th Century Masters galleries. The museum building itself is an architectural masterpiece and a highlight of the park. St. Louis’ most recognizable icon is without a doubt, The Gateway Arch, the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in downtown St. Louis. The arch was completed in 1965 and at 630 feet, the stainless steel structure is the tallest man-made monument in the country. The view from the top is a site that should not be missed. Don’t forget to bring your camera! After a day of history and culture, head to the Central West End neighborhood, a gayfriendly destination, with numerous sidewalk cafes, small boutiques, and antique stores. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is also located in this neighborhood and houses the world’s largest collection of mosaic art. The cathedral, designated a basilica in 1997, was built between 1907 and 1909 and is one of St. Louis’ main attractions. Those looking to stay close to LGBT nightlife should check in at The Cheshire, a boutique hotel reminiscent of a traditional British inn. The hotel contains beautifully appointed rooms with luxury linens, deep soaking whirlpool tubs and complimentary tea service. The Cheshire truly transports visitors to the English countryside and for a while,

you forget you are in St. Louis. For a quick snack, stop by Fox & Hounds Tavern and sample traditional British fare. Most of St. Louis’ LGBT culture is centered around The Grove, a growing business and entertainment district along Manchester Avenue about a five minute taxi ride from the hotel. The Grove is home to a variety of independently-owned restaurants, nightlife options, and retail shops. Stop by Atomic Cowboy for some Mexican cuisine such as shredded pork tacos, fish tacos, or buffalo chicken sliders or head to The Bad Dog Bar & Grill to mingle with the leather and bear crowd and enjoy happy hour cocktails and traditional American fare. Ladies should make an effort to go to Novak’s, regularly voted one of the top lesbian bars in St. Louis. The vibrant bar and grill features weekly karaoke nights and a regular lineup of live entertainment. Gays looking to party St. Louis-style should head to Just John Nightclub located in the heart of Manchester Avenue. Just John offers an upscale environment with high tech lighting, premium sound, flat screen TV’s, private tables and the friendliest staff in town. The focal point of Just John is The Florida Room, an indoor/outdoor area that is climate controlled and features a fireplace, tropical plants and lots of windows overlooking the patio area. While at Just John, find Andy and ask him to pour you his signature Pineapple Upside-down Cake. One of the “coolest spots” to visit in The Grove is Erney’s 32 Degrees. The bar features a large, walk-in Vodka Box — a glass-

enclosed freezer, which people can gather in to sample dozens of vodkas from around the world. It gets quite cold inside the box, so dress appropriately. St. Louis is also proud to host one of the largest pride festivals in the region. The twoday event held in Tower Grove Park is expected to attract over 60,000 visitors this year and will feature headlining entertainment from Deborah Cox, Christine W and Pandora Boxx. St. Louis Pride will also include an Athlete’s Village and a non-denominational prayer service. Also part of this year’s festivities will be a special performance by Margaret Cho at Lumiere Place. A highlight of St. Louis’s LGBT scene is the Gateway Men’s Chorus. The GMC was formed in 1988 with 22 singers and has since grown to encompass approximately 80 talented men, making them one of the most successful male choral arts organizations in the country. St. Louis is also home to numerous gay sports leagues, non-profit organizations and cultural groups, making the city a must-see “out destination.” For more information on St. Louis, please visit www.explorestlouis.com OUT Destinations is part of OUTreach Public Relations, a Nashville-based company specializing in LGBT marketing. Founded by Joey Amato in 2012, OUTreach PR has quickly become one of the most sought after companies for firms looking to target the ever growing and affluent LGBT consumer. This is so perfect, for the time you look

at this image you don’t know if it’s a boy and a girl, a girl and a girl, a boy and a

boy, a black man and white girl, white man

and Asian girl, you know nothing. Just the simplicity of the connection and the beauty of two human beings sharing love and that is all that should ever matter.

Spencer Lieb

Michael Ruppal

Last week in our special Spirit section we erroneously mixed up two names on the photo on page 38 in the story “Coming Together in the Name of Science.” We apologize to Michael Ruppal and Spencer Lieb. We also misidentified Terry DeCarlo, Broward House’s PR and marketing director as “Tony” DeCarlo in the article “Fighting the Fight” on page 36. We apologize to Terry DeCarlo. In the same article under the subsection “Palm Beach County – Comprehensive AIDS Program” we misidentified Dr. Rik Pavlescak’s as the Chief Programmer/CEO. He is the Chief Program Officer/Chief Operating Officer. Some other clarifications include CAP’s Street Smart program, which is an HIV Prevention Program for minority youth – not a housing program. FoundCare is not a subsidiary of CAP. As part of its strategic plan in 2000, CAP’s Board of Directors recognized the need for health care services and as a result, they created another organization, FoundCare, Inc. which operates a health center. CAP currently does not provide dental care or offer pharmacy services. Those services are planned for future implementation.
