July 4: A Special Day for Gay Americans By Norm Kent
O
n this July 4, 2012, SFGN commemorates our freedoms in pictures and in print. We do so with another unique photographic issue, capturing the broad diversity and remarkable breadth of gay life across the globe. We catch it with an ingenious photo spread creatively laid out by George Dauphin, artfully enhanced with a body of work from a collage of photographers. We have heard often that a picture is worth a thousand words. The 100 or so images on the pages of SFGN more than make up for the words that are not there. On July 4, Americans celebrate the freedoms we have, but we can never forget those treasures still denied us. These pages capture not only our pride, but the necessary passion of our continuing protests; brothers and sisters in other places still denied fundamental rights and fair treatment. We have lots of breaking news and features to share with you in the weeks ahead. We have added a managing editor who is investigating stories, a web based editor who is posting new and original content on www.sfgn.com daily, and a young photographer who is helping enhance our outreach. From all parts of the world, they will bring breadth and depth to our paper. We will cover pastors in Miami who are anti-gay and countries anywhere in the world that would bring us harm. Each week, our goal is to create a community newspaper you can be proud of. I am reminded of what Pericles said centuries ago of the Greeks, “If Athens shall appear great to you, consider that her glories were

purchased by men simply doing their duty every day.” Our goal here at SFGN is to do our job, raise our voice, and make sure we are all heard, that good deeds are illuminated and that bad acts are exposed. July 4 is a day to celebrate freedom, indivisible, and with justice for all. For minorities in America, from women to gays to African Americans, it has always been a struggle. But as time unfolds, the doors unlock, and the walls fall down. Americans favor, admire, and come to love those who fight for their rights, assert their liberties, and stand up for their conscience. The pictures on these pages do not attempt to capture the whole breadth of all our lives. They may not capture gays who work in hospitals or serve in the military or are decision-makers in corporations. But the pictures say in city after city and country after country that the LGBT community illuminates and enriches the lives of our communities. We are here and there, everywhere and everyplace. And we have reason to be proud of who we are and what we have achieved. In 2012, a year when gays are getting married in different states and serving openly in the military in different countries, we can say the freedoms we have been denied are now coming to us, after all this time. And we are adding a little of pastel and color to the red, white and blue. Be proud of who you are. Be proud of what you have become. And be proud that with your testimony and participation, the future will still be brighter. Independence Day. It is now ours, too.

Notes on Images of Pride and Protest
W
hat better way to express the creativity, the celebration, the humor, the frustrations, and the struggles of being gay than in a visual record of this global “community” we find ourselves in? In recognition that we all have one goal in common — to be respected and recognized as having the same rights as every other human being — this SFGN issue is dedicated to those men and women who celebrate and seek freedom. The expression of the celebration or the struggle may take many different forms. We have tried to represent as many as we were able to in one issue of this paper: the many manifestations of Pride in South Florida, through the United States and the world; the immensely imaginative costumes and make-up
of those parades; the cartoons of Darryl Smith and Karl Hampe. But we would be remiss if we had ignored those who still fight for the very basic rights. As much as we have left to do in the USA, there are those in Eastern Europe, Africa and other parts of the world, who still fight for even more basic rights. There are those who are killed for being who they are, as represented by Daniel Zamudio. These are the images that will last forever in our minds. They inspire us and move us to fight for freedom. Thanks to Publisher Norm Kent and Editor in Chief Jason Parsley for trusting me to put this issue together.

ABOUT PREZISTA
®
PREZISTA® (darunavir) is a prescription medicine. It is one treatment option in the class of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) medicines known as protease inhibitors. PREZISTA® is always taken with and at the same time as ritonavir (Norvir ®), in combination with other HIV medicines for the treatment of HIV infection in adults. PREZISTA® should also be taken with food. • The use of other medicines active against HIV in combination with PREZISTA®/ritonavir (Norvir ®) may increase your ability to fight HIV. Your healthcare professional will work with you to find the right combination of HIV medicines • It is important that you remain under the care of your healthcare professional during treatment with PREZISTA® PREZISTA® does not cure HIV infection or AIDS and you may continue to experience illnesses associated with HIV-1 infection, including opportunistic infections. There is no other person in the world who is exactly like you. And no HIV treatments are exactly alike, either. That’s why you should ask your healthcare professional about PREZISTA® (darunavir). Once-Daily PREZISTA® taken with ritonavir and in combination with other HIV medications can help lower your viral load and keep your HIV under control over the long term. In a clinical study* of almost 4 years (192 weeks), 7 out of 10 adults who had never taken HIV medications before maintained undetectable† viral loads with PREZISTA® plus ritonavir and Truvada.®
Please read the Important Safety Information and Patient Information below and on adjacent pages. Find out if the PREZISTA® EXPERIENCE is right for you. What is PREZISTA? PREZISTA is a prescription anti-HIV medicine used with ritonavir and other anti-HIV medicines to treat adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. PREZISTA is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). When used with other HIV medicines, PREZISTA may help to reduce the amount of HIV in your blood (called “viral load”). PREZISTA may also help to increase the number of white blood cells called CD4 (T) cell which help fight off other infections. Reducing the amount of HIV and increasing the CD4 (T) cell count may improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or infections that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). PREZISTA does not cure HIV infection or AIDS and you may continue to experience illnesses associated with HIV-1 infection, including opportunistic infections. You should remain under the care of a doctor when using PREZISTA. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 infection. • Do not share needles or other injection equipment. • Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes and razor blades. • Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safe sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.
