Allen West vs. Allen West

H

ow do you defeat conservative Florida Rep. Allen West? Using, well, West himself. That was Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy’s idea behind WhatWestSaid.com, a website dedicated to collecting outrageous quotes by West. The site, made by the Murphy for Congress campaign, features a bubble head, croppedout image of West’s face tied to a quote balloon that serves as a slideshow with the conservative politician’s crazy comments. At the top, the site also has a big blue button for people to sign up for alerts from Murphy’s campaign and donate money. Murphy is currently way behind West as far as campaign war chests goes. He has raised about $2.3 million, compared to the whopping $9.9 million West has amassed in contributions so far.

South African Archer Comes Out at the Olympics

S

outh African archer Karen Hultzer, who’s currently competing at the Olympic Games, publicly confirmed she is a lesbian in an interview with SBNation. “I am an archer, middle aged and a lesbian. I am also cranky before my first cup of coffee. None of these aspects define who I am, they are simply part of me,” she told SBNation and Outsports. “I am fortunate that my sexual identity is not an issue, and I don’t suffer the level of discrimination and violence that black lesbians in South Africa do. I look forward to the day when this is a non-issue and as relevant as my eye color or favorite sushi.” Hultzer’s confirmation now increases the number of out Olympians to 22. According to SBNation, she is the second South African Summer Olympian to come out, following beach volleyball player Leigh-Ann Naidoo in 2004.

Alleged Ponzi Schemer Claims Poverty, Appointed Public Defender By Gideon Grudo

A

ny doubt that Jim Ellis was going to be charged criminally for a Ponzi scheme was removed on Friday, July 27, when a U.S. District Court Judge appointed him a federal public defender at the request of the Department of Justice. Ellis was the center of an SFGN investigation in February, in which it reported on the alleged doings of a Ponzi scheme gone bust in and around Wilton Manors. As the investigation unfolded it led to numerous stories, the most notable one in late May, when a group of Ellis’ alleged victims sued him alleging that he engaged in a series of fraudulent acts in concert with George Elia. The coverage drew national attention and local controversy, the victims often taunted by people who couldn’t believe that Ellis, along with daughter Janet

Ellis and alleged co-conspirator George Elia, could have swindled people out of their money. There should be no doubt anymore. In a July 19 letter to Ellis’s private lawyer, Stephen Pave of South Miami, the Department of Justice wrote that “your client is the target of a criminal investigation,” and there exists, “sufficient evidence to seek your client’s indictment for numerous felony offenses.” But since Pave notified the Justice Department Ellis could not afford his services any longer, they asked for a special hearing before the United States Magistrate for a public defender to be appointed for him. The court then held a hearing on July 27, at which time it was determined Ellis did indeed qualify for a special public defender appointment. D’Arsey Houlihan was tasked with representing him on pending charges,

Nursing homes can push gay seniors back into closet ‘Gen Silent’ film exposes prejudice, fear By Diane C. Lade, www.Sun-Sentinel.com

G

ay and lesbian elders have lived long enough to see amazing changes: marriage rights, the rise of AIDS activism, celebrities coming out. But there is something that may drive some of them back into the closet: longterm care. Afraid of abuse or discrimination, LGBT seniors who are open about their relationships with friends and families may hide that part of their lives if they enter nursing homes or assisted living facilities. It’s a real concern. “Gen Silent,” a 2011 documentary being screened at three South Florida locations this week, hopes to shed light on the issue. The one-hour film by independent California director Stu Maddux opens the doors of nursing home rooms and private homes, letting LGBT seniors and the people who care for them tell their stories. “We forget that we have an entire generation of people for whom being out wasn’t even an option,” said Tony Plakas, CEO of Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Lake Worth. “They can’t be guaranteed an environment, as they age, where they will be treated equally.” One social worker in the film, who coordinates sensitivity training in care facilities, describes watching a nursing aide offer to pray with a frail resident to be forgiven for the sin of being gay. “I watched this film and got sick,” said Ellen Wedner, chairwoman of the Miami Jewish Film Festival who brought “Gen Silent” to South Florida through her nonprofit, Creative Arts Enterprises, in association with Treece Financial Group Inc. “None of us imagine aging or getting older, so this is serious and thought-provoking.” No one is sure exactly how many gay and lesbian seniors there are in South Florida, yet alone the numbers in retirement centers. There could be as many as 53,520 LGBT elders in Palm Beach and Broward counties by the common estimate that 10 percent of the overall population is homosexual. Lawrence Johnson, a 68-year-old retired teacher in Delray Beach, was recruited by Maddux to be in “Gen Silent” shortly after the state of Massachusetts named Johnson as Caregiver of the Year in 2007. The camera follows him from his former home in suburban Boston into a nearby care facility where his partner of 38 years, Alexandre Rheaume, struggles with conversation during their daily visit. “I love you,” Rheaume finally murmurs clearly through the dementia that clouds his

memory and blurs his speech. Johnson and Rheaume, who was 22 years Johnson’s senior, had met at Harvard University. They made a home together, supported each other in life’s up and downs. And like many other couples who grow older together, Johnson suddenly found himself a caregiver when Rheaume was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. But Johnson suddenly discovered that in other ways they weren’t like other couples.A social worker connected him with a caregiver support group,“but I felt uncomfortable, being the old gay person there. I never felt I could talk about my issues,” he told the Sun Sentinel. At the first nursing home where Rheaume lived,“they weren’t prepared to deal with us as a couple. You could pick up the vibrations, especially from the aides,” Johnson said. A second nursing home stay went much better, after Johnson had a frank talk with management in advance. The administrator “made it very clear we

In order for teens to attend without having to lie to their parents, the group was classified as a Miami Dade College class called “Developing Your Self-Esteem.” “This was one of the most amazing groups, and I am so proud of to be a part of the dream team that facilitated these young people to meet, discuss issues,” she said. “[They taught] me so much.” Amazingly, a version of this group still exists at Pridelines as Rainbow Circle. “Every Monday night, peers pick topics… It’s constantly evolving, but we’ve been doing the same program [for 30 years],” said Gabriel Garcia-Vera, Programs and Development Coordinator. Garcia-Vera, who is 23 years old, started as a youth member in 2003. Originally from Puerto Rico, he lived there during the year, but spent his summers in Miami at Pridelines. In 2007, he moved to South Florida, and became a volunteer before attaining his current staff position. His reflections about Pridelines are profound: “Someone saved my life [when I was a youth member]. I didn’t realize it in that moment [but] that’s what we do. We save lives. I can now be that for someone else.” Josue Santiago also experienced Pridelines from different vantage points. He started in 1999 as a youth member, and became the first Youth Liaison to the Board of Directors. The Youth Liaison position still exists, but has been retitled to President of the Youth Council. Later in 2003, Santiago became a Board member, which was a challenging transition due to the situation at Pridelines: “We weren’t doing so great financially. We lacked the hands-on leadership needed for a grassroots organization.” In fact, when the Board Chair resigned, Santiago, who was 22 at the time, became the youngest person to serve in this position at Pridelines. More challenges followed: “The Board and I met to discuss how we should go about folding the organization and dissolving its assets. That night, two young people came seeking support. We told them that we weren’t open but to return the following week. We decided to do whatever it took to turn the organization around...” Some of their accomplishments included establishing “a more solid balance sheet, the adult prom/gala as a fundraiser, more communications with donors,” and receiving a grant from the Children’s Trust, Santiago said. Although he now works at Pridelines on an “as-needed basis,” Santiago remains committed to the organization’s sustainability: “It would be great to see Pridelines grow, expand its staff and open more locations to bring their work and their message to more young people across South Florida.” Program Coordinator Jessica Lam also shared her thoughts on the future: “I hope that Pridelines will continue to offer the safe space that this young population needs. I hope that we can nurture and train future leaders in

10

the LGBTQ Community. And I hope that even after we have gotten to a time that [LGBTQ individuals are] seen as equal in our society that we can continue to be a place where young folks can come and enjoy each other’s company in a fun and nurturing environment.” Since 2008, Lam has facilitated several groups including Rainbow Circle and Between Here and Somewhere Else (centered on transgendered youth). She provided her insight on the needs of LGBT teens and young adults: “They need mentors. They need guidance and fun things to do that are ‘age appropriate.’ And at Pridelines, we try to give them an alternative.” However, Pridelines’ positive influence extends beyond the youth it serves. Lam, who grew up in Miami, said, “I was about 12 years old [in 1982]. I wish I would have discovered the… Gay and Lesbian Youth Group…As a young transgender individual in the [1980s]. I thought I was alone. But it’s interesting how life comes full circle, my ex-partner was one of those young lesbian youth who did find refuge. Had it not been for the organization back then, she may not be here today. One can never truly know the reaches that this organization has had and the impact it has made.” Current President of the Youth Council, Jamesly Louis, also discussed Pridelines’ effect: “The first time I walked into Pridelines — that was the first time I knew there were other gay people.” Louis was born in Haiti, and started at Pridelines four years ago when he was 17 years old. “There [were] a lot of things going on. The top of the top was the Youth Council, it was like the Supreme Court. I wanted to join that—they make a lot of decisions.” Before Pridelines, Louis was not able to find much acceptance: “They made me believe in Haiti that I was the only one who was different. I used to be afraid of gay people myself. Pridelines really showed me there’s nothing wrong with me.” Mr. Louis also added his insight on Pridelines’ Pearl Anniversary: “Celebrating 30 years means we’ve done something amazing. And we’ll keep doing it. It’s another way of telling the community that we’re here, and here to stay.”

“It is with great pride that I join the White House in recognizing CenterLink as a ‘Champion of Change’ for its tireless efforts to improve the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the South Florida community and all across the country. Are Loyalty, Friendship & Gratitude Obsolete?

“Life Is Not How You Survive The Storm, But How You Dance In The Rain” -unattributed

T

here is a tendency among many gay people to consider friends as their only true family. It comes from years of painful rejection from our own blood relatives who are too shocked, stupid or incapable of dealing with who and what we are. So we run to our friends and find solace in the illusion that they can fill the void we all feel. We somehow make them our surrogate or adopted brothers, sisters, parents. After all it’s not blood or Facebook that connects us, but experience. It works, up to a certain point. I would like to believe that most of the time it does. Unfortunately more often than not this is not the case. In fact, the most burning betrayals and disappointments come from the people we consider our “friends”. Help them find a job, or better, give them a job, lend them money, support them during times of

12

trouble, be there when they need a roof, a meal or a bed, bail them out of jail, and see what happens. It’s the kiss of death. They will walk out on you, lie to you, steal from you, find excuses for not socializing with you, stab you in the back at the first opportunity, and, of course, tell everybody how terrible you are. If you search for gratitude I suggest you rescue a dog instead, you will then know what unconditional love and loyalty really are. Europeans are always amazed when they first meet an American at how “friendly” we are. That’s all they talk about. Not how smart or cool we are, not how fun we can be, just “how friendly”. They can’t believe we immediately address each other by our first names, often turning Roberts into Bobs or Cliffords into Cliffs, Anthonys into Tonys, without a second thought. To them it is an alien concept because getting to know one another and be friends with someone is considered a life-long process, a very serious and difficult endeavor. And it is true, when I came to this country I was amazed, even funeral home directors

told you; “Have a nice day” as you left to bury a relative. Unfortunately, we Americans are very superficial, often phony, we live for the moment, for instant gratification, for “what have you done for me TODAY” and of course have no room for, or concept of, gratitude. Never expect anybody to be grateful for what you have done for them. Always prepare for the worst. In fact bank on it. And, seriously, do not take it personally. For stupidity, you know, there is no cure. I continuously suffer disappointments from people I have been nice to or people I have helped in a moment of great need, alas it will not stop me from doing it again. Not because I’m a masochist but because, and it might sound corny, what goes around comes around. Besides, what else am I supposed to do? I still do not understand what the purpose of life is, it becomes slightly meaningful only when I can make someone smile and lift their spirits. How many friends can you claim truly care about you? Not just the people who are

fun to hang out with but those who feel good when you are happy and successful, feel bad when you are sick or going through a hard time, people who will put their lives on hold to help you with yours. How far could you count when you were four years old? So as I have done in the past, I lick my wounds but also count my blessings. Always remember you cannot exorcise the past, it has to be remembered, thought about it, accepted, perhaps even cherished, because it teaches you how to survive. Yes, lots of people have disappointed me. Yet, once again, I welcomed them into my life, they took what they wanted and left without a second thought, but in the multitude there are still a few shiny beacons that make it all worthwhile. For that I’m grateful and will continue to nurture and hold on to even the most fragile of relationships.

Thurston Blasts SFGN’s Headline

T

Jason Parsley, Editor-in-Chief

wo weeks ago SFGN published a story “Local Democrat Defends Controversial AntiGay Spending” which took a look at Rep. Perry Thurston’s campaign expenditures. Since 2006 Perry’s campaign has given more than $2,500 in donations and advertisements to two anti-gay churches. SFGN contacted Perry to give him a chance to explain himself, which he said “My record speaks for itself. I’m behind anything that expands people’s rights. I try to maintain that position as often as I can.” He then referred SFGN to his voting record. He also stated he was for gay marriage, even in 2008, when he received a lot of flack from his constituents for his stance. Perry called SFGN last week to complain about the headline. He told

SFGN that he felt it was misleading, even though he acknowledged the substance of the article was accurate. He said many people would only look at the headline and not read the story. He also went on to say that this type of headline is perfect for his opponent Scott Herman to use against him. He implied, intentionally or not, that the Herman campaigned was perhaps involved in writing the above headline. This is not the case, and it never will be. SFGN does not sell its headlines. We regret that Perry did not like the headline, but we stand behind it. Furthermore we cannot control what one campaign uses (or misuses) to attempt to win an election. We can only do our job, which is report, the facts.

GUEST COLUMNIST

Chick-fil-A:

5 Reasons It Isn’t What You Think By David Badash, www.Huffington Post.com

F

ormer GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee decreed Wednesday, Aug. 1, to be “Chickfil-A Appreciation Day.” The former Republican governor of Arkansas says he “has been incensed at the vitriolic assaults on the Chick Fil-A company because the CEO, Dan Cathy, made comments recently in which he affirmed his view that the Biblical view of marriage should be upheld.” Of course, not one word of that is accurate, not even that Dan Cathy is the CEO (his dad is), and if you’re standing in line waiting for your chicken sandwich and waffle fries, why not take a moment to learn about what Chick-fil-A really does, and -- even if you’re opposed to same-sex marriage -- what your money is buying.

Here are five reasons why Chick-fil-A isn’t what you think: 1) Chick-fil-A has donated at least $5 million to organizations (including a certified hate group) that, among other things, depict gay people as pedophiles, want to make “gay behavior” illegal, and even say gay people should be “exported” out of America. Even if you oppose same-sex marriage, do you really want to support a company that advocates putting gay people in jail, or “exporting” them, just because they’re gay? 2) Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy didn’t merely say he supports traditional marriage. Dan Cathy said if you support gay marriage, you “are inviting God’s judgment on our nation,” and that we “shake our fist at Him” when we do. Dan Cathy also said same-sex marriage is the result of a “deprived” mind and called it”twisted up kind of stuff.” Even if you don’t support same-sex marriage, do you really think gay marriage is “inviting God’s judgment on our nation”? Haven’t we all heard enough blame from those who claim to speak for the Lord, like after Katrina or, more recently, after the shooting in Aurora, Colo.?

3) Chick-fil-A supports organizations that have claimed they can change gay people into straight people -- “pray away the gay” -- despite the fact that practically every major medical organization has stated that this is not only impossible but dangerous and harmful. Even if you don’t support same-sex marriage, do you support fake “science” that is known to harm the very people it claims to help? 4) The media keep saying Chick-fil-A has never discriminated, but the truth is that Chick-fil-A has been sued over a dozen times for employment discrimination. That’s what a leading business publication,Forbes, stated in 2007, when they also called Chickfil-A a “cult” and reported that Chick-filA’s founder and CEO Truett Cathy said he wanted to hire married people because they are more industrious and productive. Truett Cathy has also said he would probably fire someone who “has been sinful or done something harmful to their family members.” Even if you don’t support same-sex marriage, do you want to support what some call a “cult” whose CEO says he would fire employees for “being sinful”? 5) Chick-fil-A is just exercising their First Amendment rights by running a business based on the Bible, right? Wrong. There’s a line between the “free exercise of religion” and violating the law. If Chick-fil-A is violating the law by discriminating against gay people, or by firing women so that they can be “stay home” moms, as one woman who is suing Chick-fil-A says in court documents, that’s not exercising religious expression or free speech, and that’s not a First Amendment issue. It may be, if the court decides, a violation of the law. Even if you don’t support same-sex marriage, do you want to support a company that might fire women to force them to be “stay home” moms against their will? There are plenty of good restaurants that are happy to work hard for your hardearned dollar. Why support a company that is working so hard to deny people their rights?

Florida’s Openly Gay By Gideon Grudo

David Richardson

wants

to go to the state legislature — he would become Tallahassee’s first openly gay representative if he succeeds. Even though Richardson is not the only LGBT candidate running (there are five others, according to Equality Florida), there’s something special about his race. Four Democrats are running for South Florida’s district 113, which covers all of Miami Beach (per recent redistricting, the city is wholly in one district for the first time), a bit of South Beach, a bit of Downtown Miami, and a bit of Little Havana. No Republicans are running, which means that the Democrat that wins that August 14 primary wins the seat. What makes Richardson even more unique is that he’s the only candidate running in the primaries who’s been endorsed by both Equality Florida and SAVE Dade. While Richardson has an idea about LGBT rights and what he wants to do to further their cause for Floridians (he emphasized he’d be working on state equality issues, not just localized ones), Richardson’s first priority is his district, he said. The ethnically diverse landscape, which includes a large proportion of Hispanics, Jews, LGBT people and others, does not have an easily seen common denominator. “The challenge is how do you take these four communities and bring the people together,” Richardson said about one issue he’d be facing at the district office. “I think I’ve got a head start on the other candidates — I speak Spanish. We have to think about everyone — no community can be excluded.” What every community needs to see, Richardson said, is the creation of jobs and state support for small businesses.

District 113 in South Flor the make-up of the “There’s no land or space for big box industries. And there never will be,” he said. To effect some changes, Richardson said he’d push for credits on property taxes and maybe discounts on sales taxes for local businesses. Having been in the accounting industry for 30 years (he started as an intern at the Pentagon), Richardson also sees opportunities for the state to garner some well-deserved income that is currently unaccountable. The example he gave involves travel sites that sell discounted rooms. When a hotel sells a block of rooms to a company that buys these in bulk, like Expedia, it sells the rooms at a discounted rate. That’s the rate that the hotel is taxed on, meaning a Florida hotel will pay Florida taxes on that discounted sale. The vacationer that buys the tickets at a higher price, however, pays the premium to the online company, which pays its taxes from wherever it’s based. Richardson said that laws can be passed to make companies pay taxes on the full price of a hotel room, not just on the discounted rate. “No one’s talking about that issue. Ultimately, someone has to be responsible for collecting that,” he said. While these are his views for the district, among other platforms, Richardson said he’s a “realist” when it comes to the LGBT population he’ll be serving. “I feel strongly about equality. We have to get there by taking small steps. But my experience has shown me that we never make true progress until we sit at the table,” he said. “You can be fired in Florida for being gay. I think that’s one of the first things that needs to be changed.” He added that he wouldn’t be spending all of his time working on LGBT issues, that there’s education and taxing and environmental issues to worry about too, but that he “won’t be

afraid to bring it up.” Richardson said that his biggest strength is having spent his entire career working in conflict resolution. He’s not afraid of being in a situation where people disagree with him. Always on the opposite side of an issue in accounting consultancy is where he’s spent most of his time, he said, which is where messes go to get cleaned up. But before Richardson can step into his office and make LGBT history in Florida, he must first beat three other Democratic candidates. First, there’s Adam Kravtiz. Having co-founded J-Date, a mainstream Jewish dating site, Kravitz went on to found www.Evoter.com, where voters go to get non-partisan information, he said. For Kravitz, the main issues affecting the district are jobs, education and wind storm insurance. Like Richardson, Kravitz said his main focus is on jobs. “I really learned there’s a lack of private investment in South Florida because there’s no incentives and it hasn’t been a priority for the state government,” Kravitz told SFGN. He added that he’s the only candidate with specific proposals to change that.“We have a lot of wealth in Florida, but no state income tax. We could create a program where, if investors invested in a qualified company, they’d get an increased homestead exemption.” The way things are currently, Kravitz said, investors rather just put their money in real estate. Of note is Kravtiz’s history with LGBT issues. He started his political career in San Francisco, where he was part of the then-Harvey Milk Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club. His business background, he said, will help him get traction with the Republicans in Tallahassee, too. “I was fighting for equality issues before they were called equality issues,” Kravitz said. “With a Republican supermajority, it’s very difficult to get any traction at all for having major sweeping changes on equality issues. We can see things done — on certain issues — like hospital visitations. I think even conservatives might be willing to give on those.” Richardson’s second opponent is Mark Weithorn. By trade a marketing expert, Weithorn has paid his

ocal activist Michael Rajner organized a local “Kiss in” at the Pompano Beach Chick-fil-A, Friday, August 3. About 70 people showed up in support, with a dozen or so CFA customers standing outside the restaurant and watched on. The “Kiss in” was apart of a national event called, National Same Sex Kiss Day. Protestors waived flags, and kissed each other for equality, as a way to counter the President of CFA’s public opposition to gay marriage. Several local dignitaries joined the protest including Kristin Jacobs, Broward County Vice Mayor; Nora Rupert, Broward County

School Board Member; Gerri Ann Capotosto, a candidate for Florida State House (District 93); Rev. Joel Slotnick of Sunshine Cathedral MCC; and Chuck Panozzo, openly gay bass player for Styx. Over the past few weeks the Chick-fil-A controversy has exploded around the country with politicians and celebrities taking sides. It culminated last week with first a National Customer Appreciation Day on Wednesday, August 1 in support of Chick-fil-A and then National Kiss Day on Friday in opposition. s many people know, Lori Whitaker and Jennifer Morales will be taking Sidelines to a new and bigger location at 2104 East Oakland Park Boulevard, where the Jib Room was once housed. Whitaker has been the target of a continuing Circuit Court claim by former bar manager Martin Kildea that he was an owner of the premises. James Pedley of Fort Lauderdale represents her in that case. While there has been no resolution, Kildea’s action has stalled in its tracks. Citing irreconcilable differences, Kildea’s lawyer, Richard Berman, has withdrawn from the case, but no new attorney has submitted a notice of appearance. Judge Bowman has given Kildea 30 days to find one, and the clock is ticking. Kildea had also filed an administrative action against Whitaker with ABT accusing her of failing to register him as an owner when the club was founded in 2006. But that was settled last month by the agency with a nominal $500

Tony Adams

F

lorida, please read this and weep. On July 24, 2012, exactly one year after the enactment of the Marriage Equality Act, City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced that same sex-marriages in New York City have generated an estimated $259 million in economic impact and $16 million in city revenues. At least 8,200 same-sex marriage licenses (not every same-sex couple chooses to identify that way) were issued in the first year, accounting for more than 10 percent of

the 75,000 marriage licenses issued in New York City since July 24, 2011. Their report includes the fact that more than 200,000 guests traveled from outside of New York City to same-sex marriage events and more than 235,000 hotel room nights were booked at an average daily room rate of $275. Did some of those out-of-towners come from Florida? You bet they did. While performing the marriages of two Orlando couples who came to New York City specifically to be married, I began to wonder Tony Adams officiates at the New York City wedding of John McHugh (Left) and Rob Barber in Central Park.

about the extent of lost revenue for Florida because of its pig-headed refusal to get ahead of the inevitable same-sex marriage ball. In the area of economic impact, Florida’s same-sex marriage advocates are not asking local homophobes to change their hearts and minds; they are merely asking them to accept a piece of the rich pie that is same-sex marriage and to stop letting New York City eat Florida’s lunch. Comparisons between Florida and New York are not difficult. Sales tax rates and hotel tax rates are similar. Both are tourism destination states. While the cost of a hotel room in New York City may exceed that of a similar room in Fort Lauderdale, the tourism multipliers are the same, with some marriage requirements in Florida actually boosting the potential revenue. For example, in Florida there is a three-day minimum wait between the acquisition of a marriage license and the actual wedding. In New York, that wait is only 24 hours. This means that out-of-towners coming to Florida for marriage will need longer visits than those coming to New York. Longer visits mean more hotel room nights, more restaurant meals, etc. Also, the cost of a marriage license in Florida is $98, more than twice the $40 cost of a New York City license. There are other geographic considerations that should also cause Florida citizens and legislators to get on the same-sex marriage bandwagon before other southern states. New York’s neighbors Connecticut and Massachusetts also permit same-sex marriage and do not lack for pretty venues attractive to samesex couples seeking the perfect setting for their special day. A picturesque bed-andbreakfast in bucolic western Connecticut? A seaside guesthouse in Provincetown? Same-sex couples in New England have many options within driving distance to

New York City. If Florida could get the jump on New Orleans, Savannah and Atlanta, the height of potential out-of-state revenue is staggering. If ever there was a reason for feisty and liberal Key West to revive its fondness for being the “Conch Republic,” this is it. Was the extent of the economic impact of same-sex marriage in New York anticipated? No. I reviewed a June, 2007 study titled Love Counts released by the New York City Comptroller. That study predicted numbers for the first three years post legalization, but by dividing apples into oranges in order to compare their predictions to the actual year-one numbers, the analysis shows that real revenue significantly exceeded expectations from five years ago. The cynical among you who will scoff at the dream of legalizing same-sex marriage in Florida where Obama’s support for it may impact his chance of success in a swing-state, should learn that Florida public opinion has changed drastically since November 6, 2008 when 62% of the vote approved the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. The polls show a steady conversion toward approval of marriage equality and that today, only a very small plurality would still deny same-sex couples recognition, with a large number in the undecided camp. While the prevalent strategy to defeat these constitutional amendments is a national/ team push against DOMA and the legality of all state constitutions that ban same-sex marriage, Florida activists would do well to publicize the New York numbers gleefully announced jointly by its Republican Mayor and lesbian Speaker. While haters may never be persuaded to accept us into their hearts, accepting us into their wallets ought to be an easier sell.

“The Twentieth Century Way”: Play Illuminates Dark Chapter in LGBT History By J.W. Arnold

L

ong before gay bars, the Internet and the invention of the ultimate modern convenience—Grindr— many gay men resorted to cruising local parks and public restrooms to fulfill their sexual desires.

A new play making its South Florida premiere, Tom Jacobson’s The Twentieth Century Way, takes a disturbing look at the developments that led to the new culture of

cruising for sex at the turn of the last century. Jacobson’s play, a breakout hit at the 2010 New York International Fringe Festival, details the true story of two out-of-work actors in Southern California who ended up hiring themselves out to local law enforcement agencies to entrap homosexuals soliciting sex in public places. “What was interesting was that oral sex was called ‘the 20th century way’ and became extremely popular in the early 1900s,” explains Director Michael Leeds. “The reason was two fold—personal hygiene got better so there were cleaner dicks and the invention of the zipper made it easier to whip them out. The combination led to more oral sex, hence the term.” The play is not a strict historical narrative, which appealed to the Tony Award-nominated director. Jacobson created a situation for the two actors to meet as if auditioning for a film and stages the story as a sort of competition as they compete for the roles of all the people who are involved in the operation, from johns to police officers and prosecutors to jurors. Clay Cartland and Mike Westrich star as

the two actors, as well as numerous other characters involved in this infamous chapter of LGBT history. “It’s almost surreal, they have to switch on a dime into another character,” says Leeds, who praised the duo’s onstage chemistry. “It really is an enormous challenge for the actors and myself.” The two actors actually entrapped between 30 and 31 men for “social vagrancy” in 1914, leading to huge public trials and, for the first time, laws outlawing oral sex of any kind. Ironically, little is known about the actual sexuality of the actors. “It’s inferred throughout the play, but it was never known if they were gay themselves,” says Leeds. “How far were they really willing to go to entrap these guys?....Do they start to develop feelings for some of the men?” Jacobson approaches this question with tense moments and, Leeds says, even breaks the fourth wall between the stage and the audience in a very interesting way that places the situation in a contemporary context. The production is the first for Andy Rogow’s Island City Stage, successor to

the popular and gay-centric Rising Action Theatre, and a co-production with Empire Stage, the company’s home for its inaugural season. Rogow is expected to announce the remainder of Island City’s season this month. The Twentieth Century Way By Tom Jacobson Island City Stage at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Homage to Gore Vidal – Oct. 3, 1925 – July 31, 2012 By Jesse Monteagudo

I

f I had to be stranded on a desert island with the works of only one author, I would pick the novels and stories and essays of Gore Vidal (1925-2012). Brilliant, erudite, perceptive and sarcastic, Vidal was a one-man library. He was the author of twenty-five novels, eight plays, a dozen screenplays, two memoirs, numerous short stories and well over two hundred essays. Thanks to a combination of heredity, luck and talent, Vidal witnessed almost a century of American political and social life. Born to America’s a-list, Vidal was a natural leader but he lacked the hypocrisy and fake modesty that our country expects from its politicians. (Vidal’s two campaigns, for Congress in 1960 and the Senate in 1982, both ended in defeat.) Frustrated in politics, Vidal channeled his political genius into literary forms. His most famous series of novels - Burr, Lincoln, 1876, Empire, Hollywood, Washington DC and The Golden Age - form a fictional history of the United States from the American Revolution to the recent past. Vidal also chronicled the Decline and Fall of the

28

American Empire in a series of perceptive essays that, collected as United States: Essays 1952-1992, won him the 1993 National Book Award. The best of Vidal’s essays also appear in Sexually Speaking (Cleis, 1999) and The Selected Essays of Gore Vidal (Doubleday, 2008). In addition to his contributions to historical fiction and political commentary, Gore Vidal wrote some of the most important works of American literary works dealing with LGBT people. Christopher Bram, writing about Vidal in his book Eminent Outlaws, called Vidal “a godfather of gay literature, in spite of himself.” Openly bisexual, Vidal rejected any attempt to sexually categorize himself or any others. His controversial 1948 novel, The City and the Pillar, was one of the first mainstream American novels to deal with male homosexuality and bisexuality. Two decades later, Vidal’s stinging Hollywood satire, Myra Breckinridge, was one of the first novels ever written about a transsexual woman. Vidal also wrote a series of gay short stories, some of which appeared in his 1956

collection, A Thirsty Evil. Gay characters also appear in most of his historical novels. Gore Vidal was one of the last of the great celebrity writers, the successor of Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Leo Tolstoy, Mark Twain and Sholem Aleichem. He was a regular guest on television talk shows in the 1960s and 1970s, where he delighted audiences with his acid wit. Never one to mince words, Vidal was one half of some of the last century’s most notorious literary feuds: with Truman Capote, Norman Mailer and William F. Buckley, Jr., among others. Needless to say, Vidal was the most sought-after commodity in the book fair circuit. I had the pleasure of seeing Gore Vidal in the flesh in November of 2008, when he appeared at the Miami Book Fair International to promote his Selected Essays. Then 83, Vidal had recently sold his beloved palace in Ravello, Italy; moved back to the US; and mourned the loss of his longtime partner, Howard Austen. Infirm, and barely able to walk, Vidal was nonetheless as brilliant as ever. An early and constant critic of then-President George W. Bush’s “war on terror” - an excuse to increase presidential powers and curtail civil liberties - Vidal welcomed the election of Barack Obama as our 44th Chief Executive: “The terrible time is over,” he exulted, with uncharacteristic optimism. Vidal called Obama “an educated man, probably overqualified for the post” and hoped America would take Obama’s message of change to heart. (Not surprisingly,

Vidal lived to be disappointed by President Obama, just like the rest of us.) But Vidal was equally critical of both parties in this “United States of Amnesia,” adding that “we have a Gore Vidal political system which has been so crooked so long there’s no rationalizing it. Everything is a lie and a cheat, and everybody is grabbing as much money as they can.” We need critics like Gore Vidal, who criticize our leaders and inspire the rest of us. Speaking at the Miami Book Fair in 2008, Vidal worried about the “dumbing of America.” Americans, Vidal said, need to be “smarter people, better-read people, knowledgeable people. We wouldn’t have had the Bush administration if people would read.” Since then, Americans have only gotten dumber, in a political climate where money rules and elections are won by a minority Tea Party whose views are the direct opposite of Vidal’s. Vidal’s death on July 31 was a great loss; and we will miss him. Even so, those of us who still read have gotten much out of Vidal’s wit and wisdom, and will continue to do so for a long time, desert island or not. Associated Press

SPOTLIGHT: THE ARTS

By J.W. Arnold

B

ravo hasn’t had much luck with Miami. First, there was the 2009 train wreck—and not in the reality television kind of good way—called Miami Social, a weekly snoozefest featuring an awkward collection of wannabes that gathered at the end of each episode for a recap on the roof of the Gansevoort hotel. (Try to say that fast after the fourteenth mojito!) Then there was the Miami version of the Real Housewives franchise in which the breakout star was actually Elsa the witch—yes, you remember—mother of Marysol Patton. Now, she was the train wreck you expect, a former model who pushed the plastic surgery obsession one or two or 10 times too many and peppered the conversation with wacky witchy mumbo jumbo. It appears Andy Cohen and the execs at the network have cast their lot on the Miami Housewives—or Elsa cast a spell on them! The series will return after the Olympics in September. PR exec Marysol (and mama), socialite Lea Black and flaky gallery owner Adriana de Moura return, but Cohen and company have beefed up the cast with FOUR new housewives: Lisa Hochtstein, wife of the so-called “Boob God,” plastic surgeon Lenny Hochstein; Former “Playboy” model and “Dancing with the Stars” hopeful Joanna Krupa; celebrity chef Ana Quincoces; and celebrity dentist Karent Sierra.Yes, the celebrity dentist should provide some toothy drama.

Sunday on the Waterfront

Don’t miss Mad Cat’s latest extravaganza, The Hamlet Dog and Pony Show, an updated take on the Bard’s most famous work. Playwrights Paul Tei and Jessica Farr take a quirky, selfindulgent journey through Shakespeare’s original verses that will leave some audiences laughing and others scratching their heads, but that’s par for the course when it comes to Mad Cat. The show, presented at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, 404 NE 26th St. in Miami, closes this weekend. Tickets are $25-30 at MadCatTheatre.org. Speaking of ghost stories, another Miami company, Naked Stage has the critics buzzing with The Turn of the Screw, a psychological thriller now playing at the Pelican Theater on the campus of North Miami’s Barry University. Margaret Ledford expertly directs Katherine Amadeo and Matthew William Chizever in what has to be the most intimate performance space in South Florida. This production also closes August 12. Tickets are $25 at NakedStage.org.

MOVIE REVIEW

“Farewell, My Queen” Offers a Revolutionary Portrait By J.W. Arnold

W

Photo by Carole Bethuel/Cohen Media Group

e pretty much know how the story of France’s last queen ends: the ill-fated Marie Antoinette takes a final march to the guillotine as the raging masses screamed nasty epithets. Especially in her final days, the young queen

Virginie Ledoyen (L) stars as Gabrielle de Polignac and Diane Kruger, right stars as Marie Antoinette in Benoit Jacquot’s historical drama Farewell.

was the subject of rumors and innuendo, accused of sexual intrigues and vilified in

32

every way possible. Scholars have questioned whether she actually ever infamously uttered, “Let them eat cake.” Farewell, My Queen, a new film from director Benoit Jacquot (“A Single Girl,” “Sade,” “Deep in the Woods”) and based on a novel by Chantal Thomas, presents a stunning portrait of the final days of the French monarchy, shown from the perspectives of the servants and scheming nobility in the queen’s court. Lea Seydoux stars as, Sidonie, the demure mistress of the Queen’s library. Hers is a demure existence in comparison to the ambitious counts and countesses who are constantly jockeying for position in the gilded halls of Versailles. Sidonie sees the opportunity to gain the Queen’s favor as chaos begins to overtake the palace when word spreads of the storming of the Bastille. Sidonie eventually finds herself taken into the Queen’s (Diane Kruger) confidence and her own desires revealed as a special relationship is revealed with her trusted lady-in-waiting, Gabrielle de Polignac (Virginie Ledoyen). Some of Marie Antoinette’s detractors accused the queen of immoral relationships with her ladies, but this is one of the first films

to portray what would be considered lesbian love, although, the intimacies the women shared could not certainly have been defined in modern terms. Diane Kruger is stunning as the conflicted Marie Antoinette and Ledoyen’s selfconsumed de Polignac creates steamy on screen tension as she manipulates first her lover and later, Sidonie, in the simple act of self-preservation. Sidonie’s desires are never fulfilled, as the Queen sends her on a dangerous mission to help her lover escape the turmoil approaching Versailles. Unlike so many historical films blinded by the splendor of the period, Farewell goes behind the scenes, into the dank, dirty kitchens and workshops where the servants toiled to provide for their masters. As the rebellion grows, the rumors start in the back rooms and quickly spread to the dirty hallways and tiny living quarters shared by the minor nobility, many of whom have compromised lives in fancy chateaus in order to be a resident at court. Jacquot’s film is both sumptuous and gritty, accurately anchored in the tiniest of details and stunning cinematography (Romain Winding).

While we know how Marie Antoinette’s story eventually ends, the conclusion has not yet been written for Jacquot and his talented production team. Look for Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, Art Direction (Katia Wyszkop) and Costumes (Christian Gasc and Valerie Ranchoux).
