PETA’s Gay VP Slams Lady Gaga for Wearing Fur

Gays love Lady Gaga, but in recent days she’s actually been going through a bad romance with some of her LGBT fans. The pop singer was photographed wearing an Armani hot pink fur jacket in New York last week and a grey knee-length coat in Bulgaria yesterday. The photos sparked the ire of gay animal lovers, especially Dan Matthews, the gay senior vice president of PETA. “Many of your gay fans, I among them, have long admired what you told Ellen: ‘I hate fur and I don’t wear fur’,” wrote Matthews in an open letter to the pop star, referencing an interview on the Ellen deGeneres show in 2007. “By wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you’re making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian.” Gaga has not confirmed whether the fur is fake or not, but she’s taken notice of the controversy it has created. She said in a statement: “I want you to know that I care deeply about your feelings and views, and I will always support your philosophies about life,” Gaga writes ... adding, “I do not however support violent, abusive, and childish campaigns for ANY CAUSE.”

Billionaire Starts Pro-Gay Super PAC for Republican Candidates

Paul Singer, the Republican billionaire that’s donated check after check to fighting for gay marriage—and to support Mitt Romney—has started his own super PAC to get seemingly pro-gay, Republican politicians elected to office. According to Politico, Singer has used $1 million to start the American Unity PAC, the group will back three Republican candidates in the 2012 election: Reps. Mary Bono Mack of California, New York’s Richard Hanna and Judy Biggert of Illinois, none of whom are vocal equality advocates.

‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ Actor Ron Palillo Dies in Palm Beach

Openly gay actor Ron Palillo died of a heart attack on Aug. 14 at the age of 63. TMZ reports that the actor, who played Horshack on “Welcome Back, Kotter,” died this morning at his home near Palm Beach, Florida from an apparent heart attack. The entertainment website cites “someone close to the actor” as the source for the news. Palillo was known for calling out, “Ooh ooh ooh, Mr. Kotter” as one of the Sweathogs on the show, which he appeared on with John Travolta from 1975 to 1979.

Gay Dads Raising 12 Kids Named Best Parents of 2012

Here’s a slap in the face to conservative anti-gay groups: Esquire magazine recently named a gay couple among the best 10 dads of 2012. The gay couple, Steven and Roger Ham, are raising 12 children—ages ranging from 3 to 17 years old—adopted from foster care. According to the Arizona Republic, Roger and Steven have been together for almost 19 years. Because Arizona does not allow gay couples to marry or adopt, 10 of the adopted children are legally bound only to Steven. The two other children, Isabel, 14, and Logan, 8, had been adopted in Washington, which allows gay couples to adopt, so both dads’ names appear on their birth certificates. Roger works as a school-bus driver and Steven went back to working full time after spending six years at home taking care of the growing family.

Hackers Defend Gay Rights by Taking Over Uganda Government Websites

The notorious group of worldwide hackers known as Anonymous was in control on Aug. 14 of two Ugandan government websites, punishing authorities for “violations of the rights of LGBT people,” the Gay Star News reports. The websites of the office of the prime minister of Uganda and the Uganda Justice Law and Order Sector were hacked by a “hacktivist” named @DramaSett3r on Twitter, in an operation dubbed #OpFuckAfrica. According to the Gay Star News, the activist also downloaded the databases of both sites and has threatened that their contents may be revealed. The hacktivists stated: “Today’s hack and deface of the Ugandan Prime Minister’s site was the latest in a long list of actions against the government and infrastructure of Uganda for crimes against LGBT people. We will not stand by while LGBT Ugandans are victimized, abused and murdered by a ruthless and corrupt government.”

Pub Crawling and Vote Grabbing By SFGN Staff

T

he organizers are very much hoping Debbie Wasserman Schultz shows up — that’ll really be the head on the beer. It’s going down Friday, Aug. 26. Up and down Wilton Drive, Obama supporters — and whoever’s out for a drink — will be privy to the Get Out the Vote Pub Crawl. The Drive is home to many LGBT-friendly businesses and bars, a seemingly perfect location for the crawl. The idea is to go from bar to bar, party, and register voters, informing the public while having some fun.

August 22, 2012 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

The first stop is at 2 p.m. at Sidelines Sports Bar, at 2031 Wilton Drive, in Wilton Manors. From there, the group will travel down the Drive in about 45-minute increments. With the group will be entertainers and politicians trying to increase the size of the group before it travels on. There are eight bars participating: Sidelines Sports Bar, Bill’s Filling Station, The Manor, Rosie’s Bar and Grill, New Moon, Matty’s On the Drive, The Alibi, and Boom.

NATIONAL NEWS

Was D.C. Shooting Downplayed By Media? By Sergio N. Candido sergio.candido@sfgn.com

R

one on the District of DeBonis blog, and one on the Crime Scene blog.” It makes sense for the Washington Post to have the story on their local section, since they are a D.C. newspaper after all. “LA Times: One mention in the U.S. section, one on the Nation Now blog.” Again, “U.S. Section” means national section. As it can be seen here, all of the most

These are some excerpts from the TV report raising that question:

influential national media in the country reported the story. Now to some of the actual and most recent facts reported on the case. The Atlantic reports that an FBI affidavit shows shooter Floyd Corkins was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his bag. Also, the Associated Press is reporting that, according to “federal sources,” Corkins told the guard “I don’t like your politics,” before shooting him in the arm. Another AP story reports that “Corkins had been volunteering for about the past six months at The DC Center for the LGBT Community, said David Mariner, executive director of the community center, which is in Northwest Washington. He usually staffed the center’s front desk on Saturdays, and his most recent shift was about two weeks ago.”

FABC mentions the shooter was “recently” a volunteer at a Washington D.C. LGBT center. They don’t mention when was the last time he was there, why, whether he was gay, or what’s the shooter current occupation. FABC says the shooter “yelled something suggesting he was against the council’s policies,” which really is as vague as it gets, and open to interpretation. FABC reports “sources say he had items from fast food chain Chick-fil-A in his bag.” FABC had no idea what they were talking about at that point in time. And in a case such as this, hearsay and innuendo don’t make things better. Then The Daily Caller takes on print media following the same argument: that they didn’t feature the story on a national level. “NYT: One mention in the U.S. section.” That’s the New York Times’ national news section, so the story did make national headlines in the Times. “WaPo: Two mentions in the Local section,

ight wing website The Daily Caller wants to make the case that the story of a man entering the religious Family Research Council headquarters on Aug. 15 and shooting the security guard didn’t make national headlines because national media are liberal and don’t care about “wingnuts.” “They’ve barely reported on yesterday’s shooting at the Washington, DC headquarters of the Family Research Council, and some of them haven’t even mentioned the name of the shooter or his motive, even though both were known within hours of the shooting,” they write. Right away, they start off with the wrong foot, citing conservative website Newsbusters, who says that “none of the network newscasts reported the breaking detail that shooter Floyd Corkins volunteered for six months at the D.C. Center for the LGBT Community, adding depth to his political motivation,” except for ABC News. But was ABC News really trying to give the full story, or was the TV network trying to find a connection to create a meatier, more controversial report?

FBI officials and operatives group together on the scene of Aug. 15’s shooting of a security guard.

So, was Corkins politically motivated? Some of the facts point in that direction, and others are just not clear enough. What’s clear is that the story is being reported by everyone, regardless of political affiliation.

Pridelines is Older — and Richer

Great game. Great savings. Great time!

By Gideon Grudo gideon.grudo@sfgn.com

I

t was quite a night. As the sun set, the lights began bouncing off the pool at the Villa by Barton G in Miami Beach, where Gianni Versace used to live. The surrounding walls, laced with murals, came to life alongside the plants and lamps and sculptures — it all seemed to come out of a movie. And the occasion was just as theatrical. Pridelines Youth Services, the Miami organization that supports LGBT youth from every corner, celebrated its 30th anniversary. “Thirty years! Thirty years and we’re stronger than ever!” Victor Diaz-Herman, Pridelines’ executive director, told the crowd at the gala. “This is the most successful fundraiser in our history, but there is work to be done.” The event was sold out with 250 attendees, a record show of hands for Pridelines’s galas. So many people donated items to the silent auction that not all of them could be displayed. It will continue online as soon as they deal with the technical details. While the full proceeds from the auctions won’t be finalized for another week, they’re estimated to be almost $40,000, making it the biggest fundraising gala in the seven years it’s been held. Two people joined the Executive Director’s Circle — fancy for donors who pledge at least $1,000 over the upcoming year — that night. Richard Murry, a Pridelines board member,

said that selling out the gala was more than they had hoped for. “We were thrilled — this is so important for the kids,” he said. Marilyn Volker and Alexei Guren, who helped bring Pridelines into existence, were given the Rainbow Circle Award. “I look around and it’s family,” Volker told SFGN, pointing at the guests. “Sometimes people are born into families, but I was invited into this one.” And Bruno Barreiro, a Miami-Date county commissioner, proclaimed that August 18 would henceforth be known as “Prideslines Youth Services Day.” The atmosphere was lit up by pride and by happiness. The guests were all smiles and laughs, people reminiscing on Pridelines past and venturing to guess what’s in store for the future. David Richardson, who recently won a primary with no Republican rivals making him Florida’s first openly gay state rep. come November, took congratulations on his win all night. “All youth — including LGBT youth — is important to me,” he said. “I feel like it’s one of the most important things I can do.” Jessica Lam was among the attendees in her capacity as Pridelines’ program facilitator. “I’m very proud,” she said. “So happy to see this support.”

How ABC Misused My Kiss

Letter From the Editor

Jason Parsley, Editor-in-Chief

W

hile I was covering one of the local protests against Chick-fil-A in South Florida my partner of 12 years and I decided to share our own kiss in front of one of their restaurants in West Palm Beach. The photo of us kissing soon went viral with several Facebook fan pages posting it. On just one of those pages it received more than 10,000 ‘likes,’ and more than 700 people shared the image. ABC national news even used the photo to illustrate the upcoming national protests that took place at CFAs across the nation Friday, August 3. However, ABC continues to use our photo to illustrate other stories involving CFA. One such story is the recent shooting of a security guard at the headquarters of the Family Research Center in Washington D.C. Thankfully the security guard was only wounded. I take issue with the use of our photo in this story. It’s one thing to use our photo in connection with a story about the recent CFA protests and counter-protests. But this story was not about CFA. It was about one, presumably crazy man’s attempt at retribution. Since the shooting took place

6

inside the headquarters of the Family Research Council the story should have focused on the organization’s long history of anti-gay activism. Instead, ABC used the shooting as a way to rehash the CFA controversy. Even the report said it “wasn’t clear whether Wednesday’s incident had any connection to the recent controversy to gay marriage.” Yet they used photos from the recent protests in front of CFA to illustrate something that even they admit wasn’t clear. There’s also no information regarding whether or not the shooter attended any of the protests at CFA. What was known, though, is that before Floyd Corkins shot the security guard he said “I don’t like your politics.” ABC never tells the viewers what those politics are, instead only referring to the FRC as “one of nation’s best known conservative groups on social issues” and that the organization “promotes Christian conservative values on issues like abortion and gay rights.” I’m not sure which Christian value ABC is referring to, but here are a few quotes from the organization’s leaders and what they really think about the LGBT community. “[W]elcoming open homosexuality in the military would clearly damage the

readiness and effectiveness of the force – in part because it would increase the already serious problem of homosexual assault in the military.” — Peter Sprigg, “Homosexual Assault in the Military,” 2010 “Since homosexual conduct is associated with higher rates of sexual promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, mental illness, substance abuse, and domestic violence, it too qualifies as a behavior that is harmful to the people who engage in it and to society at large.” — Tony Perkins, “Christian compassion requires the truth about the harms of homosexuality,” Washington Post, 10/25/2010 “We believe the evidence shows … that relative to the size of their population, homosexual men are more likely to engage in child sexual abuse than are heterosexual men.” — Peter Sprigg, “Debating Homosexuality: Understanding Two Views.” 2011. “While activists like to claim that

pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem.” — FRC President Tony Perkins, FRC website, 2010 Something else ABC never tells viewers is the connection between CFA and the FRC. Corkins apparently had items from CFA in his bag at the time of the shooting, and ABC correctly points out that FRC supports CFA’s stance opposing gay marriage. What ABC failed to mention though is CFA’s history of donating money to the FRC and in this story that’s the more relevant connection between the anti-gay group and the fast food giant. So ABC left out important and relevant information, instead focusing on the sensational, and least important part, of the story. While I have no problem with news outlets using our photo in context, I do have a problem with the photo being used to illustrate a story such as this.

What is PREZISTA? PREZISTA is a prescription anti-HIV medicine used with ritonavir and other anti-HIV medicines to treat adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. PREZISTA is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). When used with other HIV medicines, PREZISTA may help to reduce the amount of HIV in your blood (called “viral load”). PREZISTA may also help to increase the number of white blood cells called CD4 (T) cell which help fight off other infections. Reducing the amount of HIV and increasing the CD4 (T) cell count may improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or infections that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). Sally Ride Sparks Posthumous Debate on Coming Out By David Crary, Associated Press

P

NEW YORK (AP) — ioneering astronaut Sally Ride, who relished privacy as much as she did adventure, chose an appropriately discreet manner of coming out. At the end of an obituary that she cowrote with her partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, they disclosed to the world their relationship of 27 years. That was it. As details trickled out after Ride’s death on Monday, it became clear that a circle of family, friends and co-workers had long known of the same-sex relationship and embraced it. For many millions of others, who admired Ride as the first American woman in space, it was a revelation — and it sparked a spirited discussion about privacy vs. public candor in regard to sexual orientation. Some commentators, such as prominent gay blogger Andrew Sullivan of the Daily Beast, second-guessed Ride’s decision to opt for privacy. “She had a chance to expand people’s horizons and young lesbians’ hope and selfesteem, and she chose not to,” he wrote. “She was the absent heroine.” Others were supportive of Ride’s choices. Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, who in 2003 became the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican world, noted that both he and Ride were baby boomers who grew up “in a time when coming out was almost unthinkable.” Robinson is 65. Ride was 61 when she died of pancreatic cancer. “For girls who had an interest in science and wanted to go places women had not been allowed to go, she was a tremendous role model,” Robinson said Wednesday. “The fact that she chose to keep her identity as a lesbian private — I honor that choice.” However, Robinson said he had a different standard for younger gays — to the point of insisting that his own clergy in New Hampshire be open about their sexuality if they are gay or lesbian. “While there is still discrimination and coming out will still have repercussions, the effect of those repercussions are vastly reduced now,” Robinson said. “I believe that times have changed. There’s no question that gays and lesbians overall are coming out now at a higher rate and an earlier age than those of previous generations. According to the LGBT

Sally Ride, first American woman in space.

Movement Advancement Project, adults aged 30-54 are 16 times more likely to be closeted than those under 30. In pop culture, the fine arts, the entertainment industry, and in some individual sports, it’s now commonplace for luminaries to be out as gay or lesbian. But in many other fields, the dynamics are different. Aside from Ride, no other astronaut of any nation has come out as gay. No active player in the four major North American pro sports leagues — football, basketball, baseball, hockey — has come out as gay, though some retired players have done so. Ken Mehlman came out as gay only after he completed his stint as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Back in 2002, baseball star Mike Piazza — then playing with the New York Mets — rebutted rumors by holding a news conference to declare, “I’m not gay.” Queen Latifah, the hip-hop star and actress, has countered comparable speculation over the years by refusing to discuss her personal life. According to a study by the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay-rights group, 51 percent of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual workers hide their sexual identity to most or all of their fellow employees. Citing those findings, gay-rights activists have been pushing, so for in vain, for Congress to outlaw workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

breaking swim from Havana to Key West. Nyad was pulled from the water at 12:55 a.m. on Aug. 21, crew member Candace Hogan wrote on the swimmers’ blog. She had started the feat the previous Saturday from the Cuban capital and lasted longer, and made it further, than in her previous tries, her team said. She swam this time for more than 41 hours, according to Hogan. In the blog post, Hogan also wrote that Nyad was willing to continue despite the adverse conditions: “When can I get back

in?” Hogan quoted the swimmer as saying. “I want full transparency that I was out. But I have plenty left in me and I want to go on.” When Nyad, 63, was pulled from the water she had already been stung nine times by box jellyfish, and was suffering from hypothermia and swollen lips, her team reported. According to the Associated Press though she had been swimming in 85-degree waters, because that is lower than the body’s core temperature, it reduced her body temperature over time. “She realized that the obstacles against this swim were too great and agreed at dawn to return to Key West by boat,” Hogan added in the blog. Australian Susie Maroney successfully swam the Straits in 1997, but she used a shark cage. Nyad was making her third attempt to become the first person to cross the Florida Straits without a shark cage. Her first attempt in 1978 had been with a cage and she had also failed, AP reports. “We all know her mind can handle it,” Candace Hogan, a crew member traveling with Nyad, wrote on the swimmer’s blog. “But there will always be a point where a human body can’t go any farther. What no one knows is where that line is drawn in Diana Nyad.” Nyad has been training for three years for the epic swim.

ocal activist and LGBT volunteer Judy Sheperd passed in late July. Now, the Pride Center, for whose toy drives she was largely responsible, will be hosting a celebration of her life. The “Judy Sheperd — A Celebration of Life” will bring together friends, family and community to remember Sheperd and spin tales about her. The Pride Center remembers Sheperd as always upbeat, and so the plan is to give her a celebration, which it seems she always wanted. The Center asks that people keep their stories, memories or thoughts down to two minutes, in the interest of time. Afterward, in the Sheperd spirit, the attendees are encouraged to head to New Moon, where dancing and more stories await. “Since Judy Shepherd’s passing, I’ve been thinking about the concept of true ‘legacy.’ Judy used her passion, stubbornness, compassion and determination to touch the lives of so many in our community,” said Deputy Director of the Pride Center

he cabaret extravaganza of Rick Leonard and Carla Bordonada is coming back — at full force. “There’s a lot of new material, but people can look forward to hearing all the old favorites,” Leonard told SFGN. “I go out of my way to give the audience what it wants instead of coming with a pre-arranged set.” Leonard and Bordonada used to be a regular act in the now-defunct and thenclassy Food Amongst the Flowers, which has since been reinvented as the Manor on Wilton Drive. Their cabaret show starts this Sunday, Aug. 26, at 8 p.m. and will continue weekly. The two had left Flowers months before it folded. “I really felt a shift in what was happening in Flowers. I didn’t like where it was going,” Leonard said. “I didn’t want my name and Carla’s name associated with this place.” They had been performing during cruises at the time and would take up that post more frequently after their departure from Flowers in 2007, a move that put fifty to sixty cruises under the duo’s belt. “Carla and I are the number one most booked cabaret duo act in Atlantis history,” Leonard said. While Bordonada had left for Los Angeles toward the end of 2010, it was Leonard who would take up a post in the Manor in Dec. 2010, working with different talents throughout his tenure. Now that Bordonada is coming back to work with him at the Manor, he couldn’t be happier. “Carla and I had been partners for a long time,” he said, noting that they’d performed together for almost five years. “Everyone’s always been kind of excited about the

ELE P H A NTS Tampa Prepares For An Influx of Conservative, Gay Republicans

S

By Steve Blanchard, Watermark

oon, the City of Tampa and its neighbors will be swarming with delegates and supporters of the Republican National Convention. During the weekend of Aug. 24-26, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will accept the party’s nomination for president. This comes two weeks after his major announcement that Rep. Paul Ryan will be his Vice Presidential candidate. For many LGBTs, the views of the Romney-Ryan team translates to a threat to equality. Both men oppose marriage equality and are criticized by gay rights groups like the Human Rights Campaign regarding their stances on LGBT issues. But the pair, and the party, have their supporters within the LGBT community, and those supporters plan to be front and center in Tampa at the RNC. Representatives of the gay conservative groups GOProud and the Log Cabin Republicans will support the Republican nominee. “The issues affecting our country and that are facing voters are bigger than one single issue,” said Jim LaSalvia, GOProud executive director, referring to same-sex marriage. “I disagree with [Romney] on same-sex marriage, but every issue is a gay issue. Gay people are living in the Obama economy too. We’re at a critical point in our country’s history and we have a failed presidents on our hands. “That’s why we endorse Mitt Romney. He has the best shot of beating Obama.”

20

GOProud, the only national gay organization that has endorsed Romney, will not only attend the RNC within the Tampa Bay Times Forum, but it will also hold its annual Homocon celebration at The Honey Pot in Ybor City on Tuesday, Aug. 29, beginning at 10:30 p.m.A list of conservative speakers (see sidebar) are slated to attend the party held at one of Ybor City’s most popular LGBT night spots. Also coming to Tampa are the Log Cabin

underway.” In May, Romney secured enough delegates to secure the nomination, so the convention is essentially a party celebrating that, rather than choosing a Republican contender to face President Obama in November.

Economic boost

Regardless of political affiliation, it’s obvious that the RNC will bring a much welcome economic boost to the Tampa

Clarke Cooper

Republicans, the older gay conservative group which has yet to officially endorse Romney for president. But that’s not out of the ordinary, according to executive director R. Clarke Cooper. “We don’t endorse [before the RNC],” Cooper explained. “It’s out of protocol. Normally organizations are ancillary pieces of the party and we don’t endorse until the convention. One of two things will happen in Tampa: Organizations will endorse a candidate or they won’t. It’s either A or B, and it’s not until the convention is

Bay area. Local businesses like restaurants and hotels are expecting an uptick in their coffers and the national media spotlight is invaluable for the Tampa Bay region, according to Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “The convention is an international event of the magnitude of nothing we’ve ever done before,” Buckhorn said. “Other than the Olympics, this will be the most watched television event in the world this year. We will have 15,000 journalists alone in Tampa for this.” And it’s an opportunity to showcase

Tampa and to relay a positive message, Buckhorn said. “This is not a political event,” the democratic mayor said.“This is an economic development opportunity.” The LCR will set up at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort on Clearwater Beach and its overflow guests have been directed to The Flamingo Resort in St. Petersburg. Throughout the weekend, the LCR will hold special receptions throughout Tampa Bay. On Aug. 26, a mix and mingle is slated for 5-7 p.m. at The Rusty Pelican on N. Rocky Point Drive in Tampa and on Aug. 27, the group will celebrate the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund at Oystercatchers within the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay from 3-5 p.m. The GOProud contingent hasn’t announced specifically where its members will stay, but LaSalvia said he encourages members to get as close to the Tampa Bay Times Forum, and Ybor City, as possible. “I came to Tampa last fall to scout it out,” LaSalvia said. “Mariruth Kennedy of the Tampa Bay Business Guild showed me around and Mark Bias and Carrie West showed me around Ybor City. I loved it there and knew it would be a perfect setting for our main event—Homocon. LaSalvia said Homocon is a tradition now for gay conservatives and bringing the signature event to a premier stage like the RNC is an opportunity the organization did not want to miss.

amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman is confusing, if not frustrating. With the recent news that Romney chose conservative Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate may cause more LGBTs to scratch their heads at the enthusiasm of gay conservatives. But Cooper is excited by the Romney-Ryan pairing. “Congressman Ryan is a strong choice for vice president, and his addition to the GOP ticket will help Republican candidates up and down the ballot,” Cooper said. “As chairman of the House Budget Committee and author of the Republican ‘path to prosperity’ that provided the blueprint for serious spending cuts in this Congress, nobody is more qualified to articulate a conservative economic vision to restore the American economy and stimulate job creation.” While both Cooper and LaSalvia praised Ryan’s 2007 vote in favor of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, the Human Rights Campaign sees his selection as counter to LGBT equality. “Paul Ryan does not support LGBT families, and has voted against allowing gay and lesbian couples to adopt,” the HRC said in a statement. “He voted against hate crime protections. He opposed repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and he does not support marriage equality.” LaSalvia disagrees with the HRC’s point of view. “The selection of Ryan is a bold and inspired pick,” LaSalvia said. “He has been the architect of policies that would benefit all Americans, especially gay Americans. Like all Americans, gays and lesbians in this country are concerned with the out-ofcontrol spending and growing mountains of unsustainable federal debt.”

LaSalvia added that GOProud believes Ryan’s Social Security reforms would end the government’s discrimination against gay couples through personal savings accounts. “He has voted to end the discriminatory death tax and for free market reforms to healthcare that will expand access to domestic partner benefits.”

Making their point

According to both LaSalvia and Cooper, being a gay conservative can be difficult, especially among the left-leaning LGBT community. But conservatism is the way to a prosperous future in America, both say, and sharing that message while in Tampa is the goal of both groups. But many question why the RNC is necessary, given that the Romney-Ryan ticket is a shoo-in for the nomination. “The reason the convention is happening, is to nominate Romney to be President of the United States,” LaSalvia said. “Any rightof-center organization going to Tampa darnwell better be going to elect Romney as president. That’s why we’re going.” LaSalvia is excited about Romney’s presidential run, and he believes the RNC will boost Romney’s popularity. “Most gay Americans, like their straight counterparts, are not better off than they were four years ago,” LaSalvia said. “The truth is that gay people are living in the disastrous failed Obama economy too. President Obama and his friends on the left want this election to be about divisive social issues because the President’s record on jobs and the economy is indefensible.” LaSalvia, and GOProud, believes Romney has the experience to “turn the economy around.” Watermark is a media partner of SFGN. Boulevard, it is by far one of the swankiest dental offices I’ve ever seen. They have five doctor operating rooms and two hygiene rooms, each with differently themed art hanging on the walls. They decided to keep both sterilizing stations out in the open, to stress how much they scrutinize sanitation, especially in these times. It was no easy task opening their new office — it took three years of fighting in court to get it open. It was argued that there wasn’t enough space for a medical practice to have parking, even though the business that used the building previously had over 60 employees, according to Cunningham. THEATER

Youth Group to Tell Story of Matthew Shepard

N

ot quite fourteen years ago, a slight, almost petite young gay man named Matthew Shepard was savagely beaten and tied to a fence on a frigid autumn prairie outside Laramie city limits in the “big sky” state of Wyoming. “I just thought it was a scarecrow,” said Aaron Kriefels, the real life bicyclist who found Shepard, unconscious, many hours later. Now, almost fourteen years after his horrific discovery, Kriefels’ words inspired one young man to try out for a part in The Laramie Project at the Maltz Jupiter Theater. Antonio Chicco, a junior at Dreyfoos School of the Arts, is glad he did. “A friend of mine performed Kriefels’ monologue in class and when he found out Maltz was auditioning he said we should try out,” said Chicco. “He never did [try out] but I did and here I am and I’ve learned a lot.” The Laramie Project is the second annual Youth Artists’ Chair production and will be presented for one night only on Saturday,

24

Sep. 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. The students will hold a question and answer session with the audience after the show. Few, if any, of the sixteen youth ranging in age from 13 to 18 had heard of Matthew Shepard or of The Laramie Project. Understandably so: The oldest was four and the youngest had not been born when 21year old Matthew Shepard succumbed to his injuries in October 1998. The Laramie Project is a unique theatrical production based on interviews with townspeople in the wake of the global scrutiny that beset the city because of Shepard’s brutal murder. Moises Kauffman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project spent a year traveling to Laramie from New York City, interviewing Laramie residents to understand their reactions to the young man’s death and subsequent media attention. “We’re focusing on bullying with this production,” said Julie Rowe, Director of Education at the theater. “The students are

familiar with bullying in school but this play takes it to a different level for them.” Members of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in Palm Beach Gardens were invited to share what it means to be gay in the 21st century and what life was like for gay people before the civil rights movement began. “We were thrilled to be invited to share our stories with these youth,” said Rev. Dr. Lea Brown, Pastor. “They are at an age where they can understand the different kinds of bullying and how attitudes toward a group of people can take on a life of their own.” “That was an eye-opener,” said actor Frances Weissler, a home-schooled sophomore. “I never really knew what it’s like to live like that. When I heard their stories I realized you really can’t know how other people feel.” “We tackle some difficult issues in this project,” said Howe, describing the Youth Artists’ Chair Program under which The Laramie Project is being produced. “It’s a free summer program in which theater staff provide one-on-one mentoring and guidance in all aspects of producing a play from casting to scenery to lighting to …everything.” “Last year we did The Good Times Are

Killing Me which is a tough play on interracial friendship by Lynda Berry,” Howe continued. “At this age the kids are starting to be aware of themselves in the community and how they can make a difference.” “I love being the director,” said Corinne Thomas, a senior at Suncoast High. “You get to create a transitory vision that strives to be as authentic to the time, place and story as possible. I love to act but there’s something more in directing.” Stage Manager, Lauren O’Keefe, a sophomore at Jupiter High added, “It’s good for students to be taking a stand against hate and against bullying. Being stage manager lets me relate to the topic as a whole and I can watch it grow.” Jason Parsley, Editor in Chief of South Florida Gay news, a media partner in the project said this about bullying, “It will take more than just laws to end this epidemic. The focus must also be on changing people’s hearts and minds and it is through productions like this, and the support of organizations like the Maltz Jupiter Theatre that we will accomplish that goal. The Real Real L Word: Womenfest 2012 F By Andrea Dulanto

Schooner Wharf Bar, Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, The Green Parrot, Hog’s Breath Saloon, and Cowboy Bill’s Honky Tonk. Cowboy Bill’s features the all-girl cover band Corday and the Cougars on several nights. The band will also be playing at Smokin’ Tuna and on the Fury Sunset Cruise. Jennifer Corday leads the group, and has been performing at Womenfest for about six years. “It’s just one of the great lesbian events that you have to put on your bucket list,” said Corday. The band covers Led Zeppelin, Heart, Joan Jett, and Guns N’ Roses. Corday said that Womenfest audiences often respond to “Redneck Lesbo,” her parody of Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman.” Also on the playlist, Corday’s own musical compositions: “Coming Undone” from the lesbian film Elena Undone, and “Weekend Warrior,” the title track from her latest album. Throughout her years at Womenfest, Corday has evacuated for Hurricane Ike, interviewed and inadvertently outed Kelly McGillis, and broken up and made up with girlfriends. Yet no amount of “drama” can diminish her love for the event: “I leave

Key West every year with my voice gone, breathless and exhausted, thinking that was one helluva good time!” Some drama optional gatherings where you can get your dance on or meet new people: Opening Party at Big Ruby’s, She Magazine’s Beach Blanket Butch & Babe Bash at Bourbon, and Speed Meeting and the Pink Happy Hour at Pearl’s. Pearl’s will also present Beverly McClellan at Pearl’s Cocktail Party and Womankind Fun-Raiser as well as Pearl’s Pool Party and Bikini Contest. For twenty years, the singersongwriter established herself as a talent in Florida. But as many avid television viewers

already know, Ms. McClellan became one of the finalists on the first season of NBC’s The Voice. She did not win the singing competition, but that did not deter her career from thriving. Currently on tour with Steve Vai, McClellan has scheduled time for Pearl’s. “I have been fortunate enough to play at Key West GLBT events in the past. Gotta love the Keys!” McClellan said. “This occasion is bringing together family. It’s all about the love. I really get to see that from my perspective on stage. It’s part of why I do what I do.”

rom Sept. 4 to 9, 2012, thousands of lesbian, bisexual and transgender women are set to visit Key West for their share of paradise at the 26th annual Womenfest. This end-of-summer celebration for LBT women is known for a diverse schedule of events and activities—so don’t worry if you’re not into bikinis and flip-flops. Key West is a tropical bliss, but island wear is only encouraged, not required. Of course, you’ll find plenty of island activities listed on the Womenfest schedule. Local businesses such as Venus Charters (lesbian-owned and operated), Fury’s Water Adventures, and Sunset Watersports are reaching out to Womenfest attendees with women-only excursions such as snorkeling trips and sunset dinner cruises. If you’re feeling extra-athletic after watching the summer Olympics, then sign up for the Womenfest Golf Scramble or the International Women’s Flag Football Exhibition Game. For those who drink like it’s an athletic competition, there are plenty of options on the Womenfest schedule including

f you missed Friday, Aug. 17’s Broward Bares It, we’ve got you covered. From emceeing divas to leather-clad boys, it was a night to remember. With about 2,200 people attending, Broward House’s Terry DeCarlo told SFGN that only about ten tickets were left by the time the show started. It’ll take the folks at Broward House about a week to go through all of the numbers, when success numbers will start coming out. “It went smooth,” DeCarlo said. “Everyone seemed to have

Local Painter Picks Up National Representation, Works to be Auctioned FAT Village painter Alfred Phillips’ works are familiar to South Florida art aficionados: He’s won Best of Show awards at shows from Key West to Palm Beach, including exhibits at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale and ArtsUnited’s Art Explosion. On Friday, August 24, the Kentucky native’s paintings will be offered in a special noreserve auction by NAC Gallery, 3325 NE 32nd St. in Fort Lauderdale’s emerging North Beach Arts and Design District. A reception will be held at the gallery at 7 p.m. followed by the auction at 8:30 p.m. NAC Gallery director Vincent Harrison also plans to exhibit Phillips’ paintings at several upcoming international art fairs. Harrison said, “We’re especially excited about a new series of work that is going to get Alfred recognized nationwide. We took him on recently and have achieved prices that are three-times higher than just a few weeks earlier.” Harrison says the no-reserve auction will provide aspiring collectors with a rare opportunity to purchase the paintings of

Aaayyyy! It’s the Fonz Today, when I think about motorcycles, I picture the Dykes on Bikes who lead the annual Stonewall Street Festival parade or the burly leathermen who hang out at the Ramrod on Saturday nights. But, for generations of us coming of age in the ‘70s, motorcycles and leather jackets bring back memories of The Fonz on TV’s “Happy Days.” Fonzie was the coolest guy in town and we all remember his trademark quip, “Sit on it!” Henry Winkler — Fonzie in the flesh — will make an appearance at the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino on Saturday, August 25 from 9 to 11 p.m. Meet and greet this iconic television star and you might even drive away as the winner of the iconic bike Fonzie rode on the series, a 1949 Triumph Trophy TRS. Election Season Heats Up with ELECTILE DYSFUNCTION THE KINSEY SICKS Kinsey Sicks on the Ballot FOR PRESIDENT ONE PERFORM ANCE ONLY!

Rachel (Ben Schatz), Trixie (Jeff Manabat), Trampolina (Spencer Brown) and Winnie (Irwin Keller), bring their campaign to become the first corporation to be elected President of the United States to the Broward Center this weekend.

By J.W. Arnold

P

olitical pundits will tell you that presidential campaigns often turn on the “August Surprise” and 2012 is no exception as Republicans get ready to convene in Tampa next week. Despite the bizarre twists and turns the campaign has already taken, there’s absolutely no way Mitt Romney could have seen this one coming. The famous dragapella barbershop quartet, The Kinsey Sicks, have entered the contest for the Republican nomination. How can a quartet of singers run to be THE president of the United States? “Well, as you know, corporations are now people, too,” explains the group’s bawdy spokesperson, Rachel (the onstage alterego of Ben Schatz), “and we’re hoping to be America’s first corporation to be president.” While it’s true, Rachel and her cohorts — Winnie, Trixie and Trampolina — have toured the country over the years and felt its pulse. They have no illusions of grandeur. “We have all the lack of qualifications that any of the leading candidates have,” Rachel insists. They’ll be bringing their red, white and bluebedecked musical show, “Electile Dysfunction,” on the campaign trail to Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center on Saturday, August 25, just in time to drum up some last minute support before the big convention on the other Florida coast. The girls will perform original songs that outline their platform, including “Sell the Poor,” “Eliminate the Schools,” and their rousing campaign anthem, “Vote for Me (I’m Not from Kenya).” They try to eschew platforms, preferring pumps, instead. Rachel says they’re “not as clubby.” As for the other issues, the girls are clear:

32

“We think taxes are good. Our performances are very taxing for the audience. We’re in favor of that form of taxation.” She is quick to point out they pay 31 percent of their income, just like Mitt Romney, until she realizes he only claimed to pay 13 percent. As for gay marriage, the candidates believe “happiness is waited on a curve, if we allow gays and lesbian to be happy, it actually diminishes the happiness of the rest of us. If they want to be patriots, they should do their civic duty and suffer like we do.” On foreign affairs, the quartet is “all for them,” especially the seedy kind like former conservative South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who disappeared while on a “hiking trip” to visit his Brazilian mistress. “We look forward to many, many foreign affairs as president,” predicts Rachel. “Even Afghanistan… because burka sex is hot. You have no idea how ravishing I look in my burka.” In an era of unparalleled campaign spending by anonymous donors, the Kinsey Sicks rightfully hesitate to name their supporters directly. “Like all good Republicans, our most ardent supporters are billionaires. Sexual partners and campaign contributors should be anonymous because, either way, people are getting screwed,” laughs Rachel. “And there’s no accounting for taste.” She does hope her audiences will prove tasteless and gullible enough to see their show. In the past, audiences have been known to walk out in the midst of the profane performances. “If there’s one take home message about our show — no refunds!,” she emphasizes. “We’ve got to keep that campaign bus gassed up.”

AUGUST 25 The Kinsey Sicks bring their irreverent humor and tight harmonies to the campaign trail in their quest to become the first Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet to serve as U.S. President.
