Shel Dorf, Founder of San Diego Comic Con International
Comic Con Founder Outed Posthumously Shel Dorf, the man that made it okay for people to express their inner geeks, was gay, according to openly gay comic artist Eric Shanower. Dorf, the the founder of the San Diego Comic Con International, was posthumously outed by Shanower during this year’s event last July, comic booksrelated website Bleeding Cool reported. Eric was very emotional about it as Shel had actually attacked him for being out early in his career, and Eric told the story of what happened and why it was so sad,” wrote Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool.“By posthumously revealing Shel was gay, he was showing how many GLBT folks have had a major effect on this industry.” Dorf died at age 76 in 2009 from diabetes-related complications. Shanower is best known for his Oz novels and comics and the on-going retelling of the Trojan War as Age of Bronze. Set in 1970, the San Diego Comic Con is arguably the biggest one of its kind in the world. This year, over 130,000 people attended the 4-day conference, according to U-T San Diego.

find other gay servicemen at your base? A new smartphone app will make it easier for LGBT service members to hook up. \ The Out Military smartphone app (designed by the creators of gay military network OutMilitary.com) is the first military focused, location-based gay dating app.The app works exactly like Grindr, but it’s geared specifically toward gay service members, veterans and their admirers, looking to find each other. Knowing who is gay on base or aboard ship can be nearly impossible, said John McKinnon, one of the creators of the app. Now, the app gives them a powerful tool to find and connect with one another right on their smartphone, they can literally ‘see’ other gay service members on their base, ship, wherever.” The app is available for IPhone and Android.

What happens when you mesh together Ken and Barbie? You get Mattel’s first Drag Queen doll. “The Blonds Blond Diamond Barbie Doll” is the name of the new collectors’ edition Barbie, which was molded after crossdresser Phillipe Blond of the New York City design duo “The Blonds,” according to Global Grind. The doll comes dressed in a fabulous faux fur coat, diamond encrusted mini dress, glitter pumps, and “a painted face that would turn RuPaul Barbie-pink with envy.” The Drag Queen Barbie is now available for purchase ($125) and ships in December.
One day after former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee called on conservatives to support Chick-fil-A’s idea of traditional family values by eating at the restaurant, Romney staffers spent nearly $500 at an Atlanta Chick-fil-A on July 23. The number was reported in a New York Times story detailing how the Republican presidential nominee had a growing cash advantage over President Obama’s war chest. The Romney Chick-fil-A tab was billed as a “meeting expense.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CIRCUMCISION: NO BENEFIT & ANTI-CHOICE Dear SFGN, The America Academy of Pediatrics is planning to release their new circumcision statement on Monday. I assume SFGN will be writing about the new statement. Please consider the following (you are welcome to quote me): - The AAP is ignoring the significant and mounting evidence of lack of health benefits, risks, harms, and ethical concerns. - Instead of objectively evaluating all evidence available, the AAP chose to use highly selective studies and data to defend and justify a deeply entrenched American cultural practice. They used highly controlled studies conducted on African adult males to claim circumcision reduces HIV, while ignoring the numerous studies showing circumcision does NOT reduce HIV or STDs. In Europe, where males are almost never circumcised, HIV is much lower than in America. Further, STDs and HIV risks have NOTHING to do with infants. - The AAP task force minimizes the risks of the procedure, repeatedly stating a ridiculously low complication rate ignoring the numerous reports of botches and deaths that have made headlines since their last statement. It is tragic
GAY REPUBLICANS — NO LONGER AN OXIMORON Thanks for the tremendous and intellectually honest SFGN article authored by Steve Blanchard of Tampa’s celebrated GLBT weeklie, Watermark. His insights into the growing number of Gay Republicans are long overdue for our nation’s unoriginal, hyper-leftist gay newspapers and editors. In the last two national elections -- 2008 and 2010 -- one-out-of-three self-identified “Gay Voters” voted Republican, according to the New York Times exit polls. In Florida, nearly 50 percent of 2010 Gay voters supported GOP Governor Rick Scott, and all the Republicans who won every statewide office (No Democrat occupies a statewide office in Florida). Additionally, large numbers of “Out” Gays worked for and voted Republican to elect Marco Rubio to the US Senate; Allen West and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to the US House; Chip La Marca as the only GOP Broward County Commissioner; and a dozen more Republicans to high office in South Florida.. In fact, the highest proportion of Gay GOP voters nationally were in South Florida and Dallas, TX, according to a study done by Keen News Services, which is headed by Lisa Keen,

the AAP chose to ignore the significant costs and complications involved in circumcision from increased MRSA risk, penile damage, and in rare cases death. - The AAP fails to consider the important protective and erogenous functions of the foreskin. - If circumcision offered significant health benefits, why has no other pediatric society in the world come out in favor of newborn circumcision? The AAP is now grossly out of line with most other nations in the worldseveral European nations are moving toward an outright ban of male circumcision because of the recognition of the rights of the child to bodily autonomy. - Circumcision is an invasive procedure with inherent surgical risks, including penile damage and death. Unless the surgery offers significant benefits to the child, this surgery should be deferred until he can decide for himself. Any benefits to circumcision are minimal at best, and do not justify routine surgery at birth for males. Please contact Intact America (www. intactamerica. org) for additional comments press@intactamerica.org. Thank you for your consideration, Ken Humbard Wellington, Florida
the former Editor-in-Chief of the Washington Blade. Despite deep and dense cultural ghetto denial on the part of the often anti-intellectual Gay Left, open Gay people of all color and circumstances have been voting Republican at a much higher rate than the intolerant and smirking Gay Democrats want to acknowledge. Ronald Reagan and his successor George H. W. Bush garnered over 40% of the Gay vote in their landslides of 1980, ‘84, and ‘88....the self-righteous Gay intelligentsia were appalled and stunned, despite their loud and relentless Nazi-like propaganda that Reagan was responsible for AIDS.. And during the 1994 middle-class Gingrich Revolution which swept a resounding GOP majority into the US Senate, the US House, half of the State Legislatures and 32 GOP Governors, 42% of self-identified “Gay” voters voted Republican, according to the New York Times exit-polling analysis. The modern GOP is confidently inclusive and supremely proud to have visible and talented Gay Republicans, activists and bloggers in our leadership ranks....unlike the Gay Democrats who expressly hate and trash political diversity in their Gay community. n Sept. 5 at Womenfest Key West, and on Oct. 7 at the Fort Lauderdale International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (FLGLFF), LGBT film audiences and their allies will have the opportunity to view the award-winning documentary I Stand Corrected. The film centers on the life of acclaimed jazz bassist Jennifer Leitham, a transgender woman who first established her musical career as John Leitham, and performed with Mel Tormé, Doc Severinsen, and many other jazz luminaries in the ’80s and ’90s. She also recorded several well-regarded CDs such as The Southpaw. But throughout those years, her gender identification as a female was kept hidden from the public. After Leitham’s sex reassignment surgery in the early 2000s, she came out as a woman. She has received support from many musicians, particularly Doc Severinsen, who appears in I Stand Corrected. She has also had to deal with intolerance. As she noted in an April 2009 interview with JazzTimes: “There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable being in a room with me… I just wish it were possible for the jazz community to be as creative about social issues as it is about music.” I Stand Corrected places the focus on Leitham’s own music. Director and producer Andrea Meyerson affirmed this emphasis: “I am extremely lucky that the subject of my documentary is so talented and wrote all this extraordinary music to express what she was going through.” In a July 2012 interview with The Advocate, Meyerson talked about how she was drawn to Leitham in 2006 — first at her appearance during L.A. Women’s Fest and later at a solo performance. “When she shared with me the people she had previously played with—Woody Herman, Mel Tormé, Doc Severinsen, I just kept thinking her story was so intriguing and important enough to approach her about doing a documentary,” Meyerson said. There had been other offers. The Hollywood Reporter had written an article about Leitham, which prompted talk of a theatrical film. One producer read a draft of Leitham’s memoir. “Some pretty famous people showed interest but I was a bit taken aback at how the story was altered to the point that very little of it rang true,” said Leitham. “When [Meyerson] approached me, it seemed the best way to tell the authentic story. She was clear that my music and career would be the most important aspects.” Meyerson and Leitham were also in sync on how they wanted to portray the transgender experience. “I noticed all the documentaries being

done about Trans people were always about the actual transition. I didn’t want to do that,” Meyerson said. “I wanted people to understand that it’s no big deal and everyone deserves to be happy. I made a movie about an extraordinary musician that happens to be transgender.” Leitham also elaborated on this perspective. “[I Stand Corrected] tells a positive story about the actions of a Trans person. It doesn’t dwell on the negative aspects of transition or the personal angst. I’ve had some challenges but I was and still am pretty good at something,” she said. “That’s what counts. If mainstream audiences see this film, I think it will go a long way at educating people who perceive the Trans experience as a negative thing.” Throughout the past few months, the film has traveled the festival circuit, and has garnered accolades at Outfest, the American Documentary Film Festival, and Translations: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival. For Leitham, the Q&A at Translations was one of the most rewarding. “It was so wonderful to field questions from people who knew so much about the transgender subject,” she recalled. “They didn’t need to hear Trans explanations, so they only asked questions about my music and career. It was really refreshing!” Meyerson discussed had a very specific notion of what she wanted audiences to take from the film. “Jennifer Leitham lived 48 years in the wrong body, hiding who she really was. She is so happy now living her life as her true self but she had to risk everything she worked so hard for just to obtain that happiness. I wanted the movie to showcase her talent and capture her beautiful spirit and I think it accomplishes that,” Meyerson said. Director and producer Andrea Meyerson will appear at Womenfest Key West and the Fort Lauderdale International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (FLGLFF). Jennifer Leitham is scheduled to appear at FLGLFF, and will give a solo performance at a Jazz Brunch before the screening. Tickets and more information can be found at www.tropiccinema.com, www. womenfest.com and www.flglff.com.

The Glass Closet of Charlie Crist is About to Shatter
H
ow many new rumors every month can be started about the alleged homosexuality and gay trysts of the former Florida governor, Charlie Crist? Well, the newest ones are emerging again because Crist has abandoned those supporters who used to defend him in the Republican Party. This week Crist endorsed President Obama over Mitt Romney, and that came on the heels of him backing Democratic U. S. Senator Bill Nelson for re-election. Forever an opportunist who has moved from one state job to another, it’s beginning to look like a ploy to transition himself as a Democrat, enabling him to run for governor again, but this time on a new ticket. Republican operatives are sticking it Crist big time. For one, Roger Stone has been relentless. The libertarian bad boy of Republican dirty tricks politics has cut Crist up brutally this week on Twitter. “I Pray Charlie Crist runs for Governor. Even Rick Scott can beat his ass,” he said.
6
Norm Kent, Publisher And in another tweet wrote, “Fake wife. Fake tan. Fake Republican.” It was followed by an unkinder post, “What’s next ? Official “Charlie Crist for Governor 2014 cockrings?” Then, mentioning the adult strip clubs available to Republican convention-goers, he noted Crist would be “more likely to be at...ah...other clubs.” Crist was probably thinking of places like The Green Iguana, a gay bar that a young Charlie Crist regularly patronized as a young Republican staffer in the early 1990s. Years later, as a journalist for New Times, Bob Norman went down a number of avenues outing Crist, right down to interviewing a former staffer who said they had sex together. But like Teflon, nothing stuck to the silver haired chameleon, who eventually married. Then came Kirby Dick’s 2008 documentary, Outrage, where the film all but insisted Crist was living in a glass closet. Even when I published the Express Gay News a decade ago, we tried to put our finger on Crist, but could not quite land the absolute truth. Crist has fought the gay rumors right
up until today, and not just by marrying a wealthy socialite. It seems whenever these allegations come to light, on his own, Crist will just pick up the phone and call a radio talk show host, friendly to him, of course, and deny them. The newest stories involve a sordid tale of Crist delivering a U.S. Senate seat to George LeMieux in order to cover up an attempted liaison with some big shot Republican leader now facing federal fraud charges. The recent revelations also claim that Crist paid paramours to leave the state rather than come out about these affairs. It’s juicy gossip stuff for sure, but is Crist yesterday’s news? If this man is really gay and has covered it up with lies and payoffs, he is the fool bearing the baggage and carrying the freight. It is his life he is ruining, his own soul he is denying. Back when he was a governor opposing gay adoption, or a U.S. Senatorial candidate fighting equal rights legislation for the LGBT community, all this mattered. Now though who really cares what he thinks? He’s just another ex-politician caught up in this week’s scandal with an old law partner he got richer with. Screw both of them. Who is going to support him on any ticket with pay offs and bribes swirling around him? Crist has always called these stories “a bunch of delusional lies,” but both the gay and mainstream press is still writing about them. Alleged former partners like Jason Wetherington and Bruce Carlton Jordan have been resuscitated. Maybe regurgitated is more like it. These are guys who purportedly bragged about bedding Crist one day, and denied it the next.

Charlie Crist, Former Florida Governor
Still, let’s open up the other door. What if he never was gay? What if we have been playing this gay vanity game where we just assume every tall, well-groomed, goodlooking man is a friend of Dorothy? And what if he had a couple of drunk induced late night affairs with guys? So what? Should we care anymore? I hope not. Now that Crist is on the verge of switching political teams, a lot of players who ran protection for him may no longer do so. Politics is brutal. Those who have been playing cover up for Crist for the past decade may be the ones coming out of the closet now. If that’s the case, watch out Charlie, because you will have to make the decision of your life. You will have to own up to who you were and what you are, or endure an endless series of denials. Give Anderson Cooper a call, okay? It won’t hurt.

T
he Carabinieri is the national military police of Italy, policing both military and civilian populations. During the process of Italian unification, it was appointed the “First Force” of the new national military organization. Although the Carabinieri assisted in the suppression of opposition during the rule of Benito Mussolini they were also responsible for his downfall and many units were disbanded by Nazi Germany which resulted in large numbers of Carabinieri joining the Italian resistance movement. Since 2001, it has been one of the four Italian Armed Forces. Carabinieri are often better trained than ordinary police, often much more helpful and nicer - in the unfortunate case you need assistance in Italy ignore the police and head straight to the nearest Carabinieri station. However, Carabinieri jokes are such an Italian tradition that I must stick one or two in this column:
- “Sergeant, we have no more place in the station archive. May we trash documents older than ten years?” “Yes, do it, but make photocopies first.”
or -”Captain, somebody stole our
squad car.” “Did you see the thief?” “No, but we took the plate number.”
Now for something completely serious: In the last few weeks a disturbing new
Pier Angelo, CEO
aspect of the Carabinieri has surfaced and hit the Italian media. A copy of the 585 pages Manual of the Carabinieri has a section called “sexual degeneration” which states that the most common “Sexual Degenerations” are: “homosexuality, exhibitionism, fetishism, sadism, masochism, incest, bestiality and necrophilia” They are not listed in alphabetical order, but homosexuality comes first. The manual is used for those candidates preparing to join the force and pass the very selective process of admission or promotion. The manual was approved December 2011 by Colonel Pasquale Santoro. When it hit the Internet it went viral. Anna Paola Concia, an Italian politician and gay rights activist who was the first openly lesbian member of the Italian Lower House, called the manual “an appalling disgrace.” She is asking the Ministry of Defense for an investigation and an intervention from the Prime Minister. She wants to ban the next series of admission exams until the manual is amended. She is willing to go all the way to the European Court if necessary. The sad part is what Italian gays call: State sanctioned homophobia. The very people

an initiative led by the “Certain Rights” advocate group and aimed at expanding rights for gay couples. Italy’s constitution and civil code does not explicitly ban gay marriages. It is ironic because many of Italy’s greatest and most venerated artists Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo Da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, and Caravaggio among them - were homosexuals commissioned to produce stunning masterpieces for the Church itself. It is part of the Italian DNA to be schizophrenic in every aspect of their lives. There is a saying that wonderfully describes their character: “Italians enjoy

who are supposed to protect and defend all citizens are the first ones to perpetrate oppression and discrimination to the point of equating homosexuality to bestiality. And if the military police teaches its members that homosexuality is a perversion, when a gay person is attacked and brutally beaten or killed, it’s like giving them a license to ignore the crime because “those people” went looking for it. It follows on the heels of Italy’s forward Antonio Cassano, who last June said he hoped there are no homosexual players on the national soccer squad, he then used

a derogatory word to describe gays. He was later fined by the European Soccer Federation for his derogatory remarks. It is also not surprising. Italy lags behind almost all the other Western European democracies on gay acceptance. Only in recent years has the subject been openly talked about, but the Catholic Church continues to exert a tremendous influence on everyday attitudes even though Italians are not as religious as Americans and Church services are sparsely attended. Another factor to consider is that Italy - and Mediterranean cultures in general are family-oriented societies where the male-macho ethic runs strong. Under these conditions it’s more difficult for gays to come out; many opt instead to lead a double life. But homosexuality is not illegal. Italy is also one of the few western European countries without legislation on same-sex couples. The only attempt to rule on civil unions was a bill proposed by former Prime Minister Romano Prodi’s administration in 2007. It was never approved by Parliament amid opposition from Prodi’s own allies and the Catholic Church. The latest legal battle stems from
creating chaos, as it provides them with a challenge to restore order.” And now we have one more round of controversy surrounding gays in Italy. The good thing is that the subject is being brought out in the open and discussed. Aurelio Mancuso president of Arcigay and founder of Equality Italia was fuming when interviewed by the press: “It’s a story that is almost impossible to believe, It sets our country back decades, it shows no respect for human beings and for the scores of gay Carabinieri who are members of the corps” Besides amending the manual, the Carabinieri force needs a strong diversity and sensitivity training program for both new and veteran officers and recruits. Minorities abuse, may it be verbal or written, should be immediately banished and punished by supervisors in charge of such training. Sensitivity to the circumstances and feelings of others is the cornerstone of human relationships. As Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsh, commentator and biblical linguist said: “Compassion and sensitivity to others flows from the awareness that all of us share the same history and fate, that our destinies are intertwined. Whatever happens to one of us affects the other. Understanding this reality brings a sense of joy and delight in the good fortune of our fellow travelers in life’s journey.”

NATIONAL NEWS
Hate Crimes & Fabrications C
harlie Rogers, an out lesbian and former University of Nebraska basketball player, is being charged with making a false police report of a hate crime in a case that’s made national headlines. Still, Rogers pleaded not guilty. SFGN spoke with Rogers’ lawyer to get her side of story. Here’s the whole picture: Only July 22, police were called to Rogers’ home after she crawled from her house naked, bleeding and screaming for help. According to CNN, Rogers told police that three masked men broke into her home, and that one of them pinned her down while another sliced a cross into her chest, cut the front of her thighs and shins and carved derogatory words in her arms and abdomen. Rogers then said they rolled her onto her stomach and cut her buttocks, the back of her thighs and the back of her right calf. She also said they tried to burn down her house. Friends of Rogers also told ABC affiliate KLKN-TV that anti-gay slurs were also found spray painted throughout her basement. On Tuesday, Aug. 21, Rogers, 33, pleaded not guilty to charges of making a false police report. Four days before the alleged incident, police say Rogers posted on Facebook her motive for faking the attack: “So maybe I am too idealistic, but I believe way deep inside me that we can make things better for everyone. I will be a catalyst. I will do what it takes. I will. Watch me,” is what police say the July 18 post read. The Lincoln Journal Star reported that an arrest warrant for Charlie Rogers was issued after investigators say they found no sign of a struggle in the living room where the Rogers claimed she was attacked. She has since been released on a personal recognizance bond after a brief court appearance. The warrant stated that “there was no apparent blood on the bedspread; even though Ms. Rogers reported she was rolled on to her stomach after she had been cut on her arms, abdomen, chest and front of her legs while being held down”. SFGN spoke with Rogers’ attorney, Brett McArthur, who said that this turn of events has been very hard for her but that he has fielded “a lot of calls from people that really want to support and be there for Charlie. She really is a wonderful person.” Almost immediately after her alleged attack, several hundred LGBT advocates, supporters and allies turned out for candlelight vigils for Rogers. Four Nebraska gay-rights groups that followed the case released a joint statement crediting police for conducting what they believe was a

balanced and thorough investigation. “It is important not to focus on the actions of any single individual,” the statement read. “As residents of Lincoln we must continue to bring our community together to declare that violence and hate are not the values of our city.” Rogers sat down for a rather emotional interview with KETV-TV to respond to those who said the attack was a hoax, saying that her “world had been changed forever” by the alleged attack. “The idea that people think it’s a lie is so hurtful,” she said at the time. “For people to think this doesn’t happen here, it does. It did.” When pressed for more information of the fallout from Rogers’ charges, McArthur told SFGN that he and Rogers had started to receive hate mail directed at them and gays in general. “I’m assuming most of it is from heterosexuals but I can’t rule out some gays being mad at the allegations,” he said. Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong told the Associated Press that police found a
pile of clothes, white knit gloves and a red box cutter on the living room floor after the alleged attack. Rogers said the gloves didn’t belong to her. He also said that investigators have determined that a lot of the DNA found inside the glove was Rogers’ and that none of it came from a male. Investigators also discovered that Rogers deleted numerous text messages she had sent the evening of the alleged attack, and that she bought cotton gloves, a box cutter and zip ties from an Ace Hardware Store in Lincoln on July 17. All of the items were later found in her house, he said. When confronted about the evidence weeks later, Peschong said Rogers admitted to purchasing all the items except the gloves. She also sent a photo of a cross-shaped cut on her chest to a friend a few days before the reported attack, Peschong said. Investigators say they also found no apparent sign of a struggle in the living room where Rogers said she was attacked, and no blood on the sheets where the cutting allegedly took place. An FBI forensic
pathologist concluded that Rogers either cut herself, or allowed someone else to do it. Peschong said the department spent thousands of dollars investigating the case, but stressed that the case will not undermine the department’s trust in people who report hate crimes. “The FBI, the Bureau of Fire Prevention and the Lincoln Police Department have spent an exorbitant amount of time and personnel resources investigating this and … we aggressively investigated this. Every day since this incident has happened, there have been investigators working on trying to identify who these assailants were,” Peschong told the AP. Despite all the alleged evidence, Brett McArthur hopes that the public keeps an open mind and wants to remind people that “this is America, people are still innocent until proven guilty.”

The Mexican Gay Marriage ‘Scandal’
By SFGN Staff
“M
exico Supreme Court ruled gay marriages in Mexico City are recognized throughout the country.” Great news, but it happened two years ago — yet the story made its way to the homepages of some major LGBT news sites (including SFGN) on Aug. 22. Who exactly started spreading the old news isn’t clear. We found out about it while performing our daily routine of checking Twitter to see what stories were trending on the web. Users were tweeting about the Mexico story, and we jumped on it right away. It wasn’t until a day later when a reader commented on the story that we found out the Mexican Supreme Court ruling was from 2010. Yes, we made a mistake, and we apologize for it. The story we saw was by the Associated Press. We thought it was fresh; it turns out it was as rancid as rotten fish. We were not the only ones to fall for it. Queerty, one of the most popular LGBT news websites around, published a story on Aug. 22 under the headline “Gay Marriages Performed in Mexico City Legal Throughout
A screenshot from Queer Times’ newsletter shows the two-year-old story under ‘International News’ in Aug. 2012
We’re not sure if these other news outlets listed along with SFGN also messed up, or if they did and later deleted their mistakes (see below). Coincidentally, on that same day the Gay Star News published a story titled “Mexico’s states debate gay marriage laws.” The story expands on the same topic, adding as the latest news bit that “the northern state of Coahuila will consider modifying the state’s civil code in order to permit same sex couples to marry.” Did they update the story at a later time
to cover up the mistake, or did they get the story right from the beginning? We can’t know for sure. An Aug. 24 newsletter from Queer Times opened with — you guessed it — the Mexico story, listed as the first item under international news. Mistakes like this happen, especially nowadays; technology makes our lives more dynamic, and makes the news more dynamic. Sometimes we need to slow down and think for a second. Again, we apologize.
A Google search for Mexico gay marriage still brings up the link of the now delected story.
the Country.” The story has now been deleted, but there are still traces of the mistake: a Google search for Mexico+Gay+Marriage brings up the link of the now-deleted story. A composite story written by Belky Perez Schwartz at Examiner.com on the same subject and published on Aug. 22 lists the following LGBT news outlets as original sources: Huff Post Gay Voices, South Florida Gay News, Associated Press, Gay Star News.

Do Lesbians Drink and Do More Drugs? New Study suggests LBT women engage in riskier behavior than the general population By Sergio Candido
Australia. The study, from Australia’s Curtin University, is said to be the first of its kind, shedding light — and voice growing concern — on the health and well-being of what some believe to be an underserved part of the LGBT community. The data for the report was gathered in Oct. 2010, when the university surveyed 900 lesbian, bisexual and queer women attending the city of Perth Pride Fair Day and several other community events, venues and groups during that year’s Pride month. Respondents averaged 26 years of age, were mostly educated, and came from urban areas. The 2-page self-complete questionnaire included items on demographics, tobacco, alcohol and drug use; sexual health, psychological well-being, antigay experiences, and sexual and domestic violence, among other things. Now that the results have been analyzed, the numbers are quite disturbing, said Jude Comfort, one of the study’s researchers and a professor in the School of Public Health at Curtin University “The findings all help in building a picture of the community and provide direction to work with this community to improve their health,” Comfort said. When it comes to tobacco, a third of the LBQ women (33 percent) said they are current smokers, with most of them being daily smokers consuming an average of 10 cigarettes a day. While only 16 percent of Australia’s general women population are smokers, according to the 2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, which includes every woman regardless of sexual orientation. The study also found that lesbian and bisexual women use illegal drugs at higher rates than the general community. In the six months prior to the survey, 49 percent of LBQ respondents said they had used any illicit drug including. At the top of the list were marijuana, which 36 percent of respondents acknowledging smoking, ecstasy (18 percent), and speed (16 percent). “Again, these figures are higher than the broader community,” Comfort reiterated. When it comes to legal drugs, alcohol is the preferred choice of Australian lesbians. While 86 percent of the sample reported they drank alcohol, which is similar to the broader population, levels of risky drinking were higher. Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council recommends that adults
14
drink no more than two drinks on any single day. Half of all LBQ women in the sample exceeded this advice, having five or more drinks a day. This compares to 11 percent of women in the general population. The report does not specify what reasons make lesbians drink or smoke in excess, however, causes could be linked to bullying and violence within a lesbian couple. The survey also showed 35 percent of women had suffered some kind of anti-gay harassment in the past year. “More than 20 percent had experienced domestic violence with a female partner, an issue that is rarely discussed in the community,” Comfort added. Comfort concludes the lack of health promotion, prevention and intervention programs specifically addressing these and other health issues for lesbian and bisexual women are leading to an unhealthy LBQ population. “While health promotion has made significant gains in some issues at the broader community level, it appears these messages have been less successful in achieving positive health behavior in this group of women,” she said. Robin Schwartz agrees. She’s the executive director at Aqua Foundation for Women, a South Florida organization working for the wellness and equality of lesbians through grants, scholarships, and community initiatives. “There is no doubt that as a community we need to do a better job of getting the word out on the health needs of LBT women,” Schwartz said. “We need to have a campaign similar to the one that was had about HIV. We need to have frank, open conversations about LBT domestic violence, discrimination from health professionals, self-care and more.” The research findings from the city of Perth by Curtin University are supported by similar work carried out in Sydney. Comfort said the goal of the study is to spur change and create awareness about the health of lesbians and bisexuals. “We hope that this study will provide important guidance to future public health programs targeting the lesbian and bisexual women’s population,” she said. They also provide direction for further research to better understand the preventative health needs of this group.” Think the study does not reflect the lesbian community as a whole? Message from the Publisher
49ers Score Touchdown Norm Kent As pro football kicks off its 2012 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers become the first pro team to kick off an ‘It Gets Better’ Video. The last few years have taught us a lot about teen bullying in America. We all have to work to put an end to it at every level. Fortunately, pro sports teams are partnering with us, from pro hockey to pro baseball. This fall, late in November, you
16
will see SFGN partner with the Florida Panthers in a special night we have planned during a game at the Bank Atlantic Center. The Panthers are an exciting, dynamic, young hockey team, and we are pleased to cultivate this relationship with them. This past season we have also worked with the Florida Marlins, whose owners and PR teams reached out to your LGBT newspaper with advertisements and ticket
giveaways. Maybe the Marlins did not grab the brass ring in this, their first season at a new stadium, but they sure tried, investing ever so much in talented athletes and a spectacular ball yard for baseball. The bottom line is that gay life embraces athletics and sports, from swimming to soccer to softball leagues. LGBT life embraces our community. We are a part of it, not apart from it. In fact, just as I played baseball for years, the other publisher in town, Bobby Blair of the Agenda, played tennis.
There are gay Olympians, and gay men and women who make their mark athletically in all sports. Let’s thank the San Francisco 49ers for doing this video, and let’s encourage all sports and businesses to remember all those who are wrongly brutalized, unjustly bullied, and unfairly labeled as outcasts. It never should have happened in the first place, and we can’t as a community let it happen anymore. Thank you, Norm Kent

ean Chapin set out to try to have others help make a change in something that he believes in. More than 16,000 signatures later on Change.org, and Chapin has persuaded the five time Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers to become the first team of the National Football League to release an It Gets Better video. Sean’s petition now makes the 49ers the second professional sports team in San Francisco to make a video, following in the steps of the San Francisco Giants. The Giants were the first team in Major League Baseball to release the video, showing support for LGBT youth and condemning anti-gay bullying. “Sean Chapin has proved once again that there’s a place for sports teams to challenge homophobia on and off the field,” said Eden James, Campaign Director for Change. org. “By winning this campaign, Sean will hopefully inspire countless other fans to urge their teams to support the It Gets Better Project, and create videos condemning anti-gay bullying and harassment.” In the video, 49ers Safety Donte Whitner said that each day brings unique challenges to LGBT youth around the country, but that resources are available to help teens struggling with bullying or harassment. “The San Francisco 49ers are proud to join ItGetsBetter.org, to let all LGBT teens know that it gets better,” Whitner said. “On behalf of the entire 49ers organization, we are on your side, and we promise: It gets better.” Also participating in the video are defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga, and linebacker Ahmad Brooks. The 49ers not only wanted to make a video, but recognized the need for one.
Donte Whitner, 49ers Safety
“When the idea of making a video for It Gets Better was brought to the team, we recognized it as a cause that relates to our own Foundation’s mission,” said Bob Lange, Public Relations Director for the 49ers. “The 49ers Foundation focuses on aiding underserved Bay Area youth, to keep them safe, on track and in school. An anti-bullying campaign such as It Gets Better helps to accomplish those very same goals.” Stephanie Laffin, a board member with It Gets Better, told SFGN that this video holds a special significance. “Sports acts as a unificator, bringing people from different geographical and social backgrounds together. Many professional sports teams have been supportive of the It Gets Better Project. To have an NFL team come together in this way sends a great message to LGBT youth,” Laffin said. “The It Gets Better Project has become an international force for the LGBT rights movement, particularly among youth. We look forward to collaborating with other sports teams like the 49ers, and to providing resources for LGBT youth both in the U.S. and abroad.” With the production of this video, Change. org hopes that countless other fans will be inspired to encourage their teams to support It Gets Better. Bob Lange is satisfied with what their video says and how it might help any person in distress. “We were happy to speak out against bullying as it affects people from all walks of life,” he said.

mong the sixty participants at Easton Mountain’s 2012 weeklong annual “Gay Spirit Camp,” only five of us were firsttimers. Most guys return to Easton Mountain many times and for many of the different programs offered here throughout the year. After just one day, I begin to understand the attraction.
offered by Ray Rigoglioso entitled “Beyond Pride: Stepping Into Our Full Powers As Gay Men – Radical Self Love.” This proved to be a fascinating exercise in constructing how we think about ourselves as gay men, how we own the good and bad sides of our personalities and how we build the self-love we need for healthy living. We made lists of stereotypes and discussed the truths and fallacies behind each of them. A funny moment occurred when one participant who shared that he is the president of his condo association talked about taking a tour of the property with a group of straight board members and telling them, “This place used to be much better looking when there were more gay men living here! You straight people don’t know from pretty. You install two
Easton Mountain, located in New York, holds workshops that help to integrate mind, body and spirit.
Easton Mountain is a community, retreat center and sanctuary created by gay men mostly for gay men (with some programs for women.) It is a lush 175-rolling-acre, wooded and rustic campus located near Albany, NY, founded and run by men who bring extensive professional experience as counselors, healers, teachers, writers, artists, musicians and creative spiritual thinkers of all varieties. In workshops, programs and events, they provide opportunities to celebrate, heal, transform, and integrate body, mind and spirit. Established 12 years ago, Easton has built a worldwide fellowship of people enriched by their experience here. There is the sense that men make regular pilgrimages to Easton to recapture their balance and their vision of healthy gay life and spirituality or to acquire new tools and insights to become excellent gay men. I will confess to arriving with some fears that the week would be too New Agey for me and that the participants might be too quirky/wacky. Those fears soon evaporated as I met the intelligent, thoughtful, attractive (all sizes and ages), and inquisitive men who had signed up for the week, and the dozen experts who would be offering workshops and leading the groups through a variety of shared experiences, discussions and activities. No one is keeping track of you. The week is yours to design as you wish. In the course of their greeting, Easton Mountain leaders John Stasio and Harry Faddis ask the attendees to promise to take good care of themselves, to be careful with their fellow attendees and to avoid the anxiety of trying to do everything. As is always the case, making new friends is a big part of a week at Easton Mountain. I was startled by the huge variety of life experiences of the attendees and of that of the largely volunteer and international staff. The men were urban, rural, coastal, fly-over and everything in between. They seem to have some qualities in common: a desire to celebrate healthy gay masculinity and a strong desire for the exploration needed to chart the best and highest course through the life of a gay man. n September 14, 2012 the Lake Worth Playhouse is presenting a staged reading of “8”. This work by Dustin Lance Black recounts the closing arguments of the Proposition 8 trial in California. Because the defendants in the case persuaded SCOTUS to deny the public access to the proceedings through live TV Black presents us with the text of the trial which is public record and cannot be sequestered. The staged reading and the recent appeal to SCOTUS by the defendants chafes the raw wounds and today I write with sadness. I am gay, and knew my orientation at an early age. To think that I would consciously choose to be ostracized, discriminated against and physically assaulted for a sexual orientation I could change, rather than fitting in and enjoying the benefits of being like others is a failure to understand human nature. Sexy Singers: Florida Opera Makes the Cut By J.W. Arnold demanding music, singers must engage in swordplay, physical assaults, and other challenging stage direction. Florida Grand Opera’s Justin Moss was recently featured in the Huffington Post with “Opera’s Sexiest Singers,” a selection of some of the hottest—and most beautiful—performers to hit the stage. “The stereotype of the over nourished opera singer reflected the reality of what past generations of opera-goers had been accustomed to seeing on the stage. Countless reasons for this phenomenon were offered up, but the most popular seemed to be that large girth is necessary for producing big sound,” Moss wrote. He continues, “Current audiences

’ve been practicing acupuncture and Oriental medicine for 28 years,” says Maryann McCarthy, OMD, AP (Oriental Medicine Doctor and Acupuncture Physician). “I was one of six members of the
Maryann McCarthy
first graduating class of the San Francisco College of Acupuncture in 1983, taking up healing arts just as HIV/AIDS was becoming the epidemic we would know it to be.” McCarthy and her five fellow graduates had developed close relationships in school and seeing the growing need for help for people with AIDS they got together to develop an acupuncture and Oriental herbs protocol to use with AIDS patients to alleviate pain and extend life with quality. “We saw lots of Kaposi’s sarcoma and pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP),” said McCarthy. “We couldn’t cure them but we could and did help them feel better.” “And we’re still helping improve wellbeing for people taking the new drugs that are extending life but may have difficult side effects that we continue to learn about,” she added. In addition to her work with HIV and AIDS in 1984, McCarthy became a clinical professor at the San Francisco College of Acupuncture where she helped devise the course on clean needle technique for the
national certification exam that was being developed for the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). “Prior to that, licensing was a hitor-miss proposition,” said McCarthy. “California was the first to establish a licensing procedure thanks to the efforts of then-governor Jerry Brown. Licensing is important,” she went on, “so people can know who to trust and who to avoid. The same in western medicine.” “I have always been attracted to women’s health issues,” said McCarthy. “I get a lot of women in my Oriental medicine practice, too.” According to McCarthy, women are often easier to diagnose and treat because they are willing to share what they’re feeling while men often try to bottle things up. “Oriental medicine encompasses the whole person,” she went on to say. “The emotional body is as important as the physical body. Ten people can come in with similar symptoms but require radically different treatments because of their underlying emotional states. It’s not a onesize-fits-all solution.” Stress is another focus area for this form of healing. “People’s stress levels are extremely high and this can lead to symptoms all over the body. If we can lower stress, we can dramatically improve all sorts of symptoms,” she said. In addition to acupuncture and Oriental
medicine, McCarthy is a licensed mental health therapist and uses therapeutic techniques to help understand her patients and their individual needs. Every new patient gets a 60 to 90 minute getting-toknow-you session before treatment is begun. McCarthy also uses Zen practices, daily meditation and yoga to help her patients take greater control of their health and wellness. She also encourages conscious eating and exercise. “Although it’s not a requirement I encourage all of my patients to start a meditation practice,” said McCarthy. “It’s a wonderful way to stop our busy minds and focus on the present moment and it can have dramatic effects on our outlooks on life.” After several years in California, McCarthy moved to Cape Cod where she had spent time earlier in her life. She practiced her holistic healing there for 20 years before moving to West Palm Beach in 2008/9 with her partner of 18 years. . “I sold my practice on the Cape and have joined a group of holistic practitioners here in Florida. My wife and I were snow birds for a few years but decided to make the break about four years ago. We visit the Cape regularly and I still have some clients who make appointments while we’re there. There are often strong bonds between practitioners and patients.” McCarthy’s office is located at 1900 South Olive in West Palm Beach. The
Fitness Guy By Peter Jackson, CPT
WHAT IS THE BEST FORM OF CARDIO? Q: What is the best form of cardio?
A: Whichever form you enjoy the most. Bear in mind that cardiovascular exercise is most beneficial for the purposes of good heart health and fat-burning. Engage in any activity that elevates and sustains your heart rate over a 20-minute period. If you feel any joint discomfort, try switching to low-impact cardio machines such as bikes and elliptical machines.
Q: I’m trying to burn fat. Is it better to do a long cardio workout, say, 60 minutes, at low intensity, or a short cardio workout at high intensity?
A: Slow/fast workouts – known as interval training – where you sprint for one minute and then walk for two are best for burning fat. Simply put, a higher heart rate burns more calories in less time. For example, you can burn 100 calories in 20 minutes of low-intensity work compared to 160 calories in 10 minutes of high intensity. Keep in mind that it takes approximately 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise before the body even begins to burn fat cells. (You will also want to add to your fat loss strategy some form of strength training to increase your lean muscle mass and boost your metabolism.) TIP: After warming up at low intensity on a treadmill, stationary bike, Stair Master, or stepper for two minutes, up the speed
to moderate intensity for 10 minutes, then do two minutes at lower intensity, then five minutes at high intensity, then close with five minutes of moderate intensity, and two minutes of low intensity as a cool down. Total cardio workout time: 26 minutes. In addition to balanced nutrition and regular exercise (cardio and strength training), getting adequate sleep is critical for maintaining weight and preventing body fat from accumulating. The fact is if you’re not consistently getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night, you’ll have a harder time burning fat. Getting regular sleep also boosts your recovery between workouts and, along with balanced nutrition, supplies the energy to train. TIP OF THE WEEK If you consistently exercise using the same sneaker over a four month period, you will ultimately decrease the tread at the bottom of the shoe. This may lead to joint pain between your ankles, hips and legs. Both the Asics and Saucony brands are highly recommended for running.
EXERCISE OF THE WEEK
One-Arm Dumbbell Row Place your right knee and right hand on a bench (as shown). Pick up a dumbbell using a neutral grip. Keeping your back flat and looking straight ahead, lift the dumbbell and pull your elbow up and back as far as it can go, almost parallel with your torso (Photo 2). Pause and squeeze your shoulder blades together before returning the dumbbell to the starting position. Complete 12 reps then switch sides. That is one set. Execute 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps, increasing the weight with each set.

Film Festival Celebrates Antiquity Gateway Theatre Presents Classics The Gateway Theatre in Fort Lauderdale is popularly known for it’s LGBT and Indie films.
By J.W. Arnold

lassic films are a passion for Arthur Friedman, owner of the Gateway Theatre in Fort Lauderdale. Since purchasing the theater last year, he’s been committed to celebrating the vintage films that were popular in the Gateway’s heyday. “Ever since I was a kid, I learned that the theatrical experience cannot be duplicated on television, video or any other new technology,” Friedman explains. “There’s something about being in a theatre with an audience watching a great movie that is magical and cannot be replicated. Having an emotional experience—laughing or crying, being thrilled or just simply enjoying— together with family, friends, neighbors and the rest of the audience ... is a feeling beyond words.” Friedman grew up loving the movies and eventually went into the film industry, first

as the owner of the legendary Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., and later as a producer of movies himself. He feels the industry has relied too much over the past 20 years on computergenerated special effects and big-ticket stars, rather than the core storytelling that made so many classic films great. The Gateway Theatre has long been popular with local audiences, screening art house, LGBT and indie films, and Friedman thought it would be the perfect venue for a Classic Film Festival. Planning for the festival began in February and a portion of proceeds will benefit the Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund. Instead of a thematic festival featuring musicals or comedy, Friedman and his staff focused on 15 of his favorite classics, including: one of the most treasured films of all time, Gone with The Wind; Orson
Welles’ Citizen Kane; Billy Wilder’s Some Like it Hot; The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland; Roman Polanski’s Chinatown; Robert Wise’s West Side Story; Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest; George Steven’s Shane; Woody Allen’s Annie Hall; Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey; and the most popular Hollywood musical of all time, Singin’ in the Rain, directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly. In addition to the classic film festival, Friedman has also begun restoring the glamour of the golden age of Hollywood to the retro movie theater. He’s installed a Wall of Fame at the entrance, as well as vintage movie posters and photographs. “It really is a throwback,” he says of the theater, which has been renamed the Classic Gateway, and the festival will give audiences the rare opportunity to see the films in the setting they were intended.
If you go to the 1st Annual Classic Film Festival When:
Aug. 31-Sept. 27, showtimes vary.
Where:
Classic Gateway Theatre 1820 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale

The ongoing program launched last week with “Be Who You Are,” a program of song, dance and drama, as well as the spoken word, that touched on social issues including teen sex, bullying, sexual orientation and identity, environmental concerns and more. The project is directed by Lloyd Reshard, interim executive director of Arts at St. John’s, along with Drama Coach Christina Alexander and Music Coach Hamilton Gutierrez. Reshard hopes the first performance will sow the seeds to grow a larger performance troupe of teens. He said, “The mission of Teens for Equality is to show that LGBTQ and Allied youth can stand up in the face of injustice through performance and visual art. The program also helps teens to have a positive impact in teen issues, human rights and equality in South Florida.” The group is currently accepting new participants, and future performances are planned beginning in September.
