American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis is throwing another name into the list of potential actors to play the lead role of Christian in the 50 Shades of Grey movie adaptation: Porn Star James Deen. The writer revealed the rumor on Twitter, but did not confirm that the Deen will play the role for sure. “Just got inside information that James Deen is actually in the running to play Christian in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ with E.L. James support,” Ellis tweeted. He also said the movie will have a low budget, and whether Deen plays the lead role or not, the main character is going to be an unknown, not a Hollywood hot shot. “‘Fifty Shades of Grey’will be budgeted at 12-15 million and James Deen is on the list of actors to play Christian Grey according to source,” he wrote in another tweet. According to Gay Star News, the author confirmed that he is no longer in the running for the project, and said he thinks it will likely be a woman writing the screenplay. Ellis had said weeks before that gay actor Matt Bomer would be the right actor to personify Christian Grey because his sexuality “complicates the role” of a straight businessman sex addict, the Gay Star News reported.
Activist Wants Gay Population Head Count in Cuba A gay Cuban activist currently residing on the island is spearheading an effort to get a head count of the LGBT community in the country, according to Havana Times. Francisco Rodriguez thinks the upcoming population and housing census that will be conducted on the island from Sept.15 to 24 is a good opportunity for gay Cuban couples to showcase their pride. “The census shows the reality of the nation,” he said. “It’s even one of those materials upon which legislation is later passed. You have to describe reality like it is, and this was a good opportunity to produce concrete information about real life.” Rodriguez is calling on gays to declare themselves couples or as being “attached” instead of “single,” even though the data will not be reflected in the final statistics of the census. “Since they won’t count our households at least they’ll see them,” said the pro-government activist as reported by Havana Times.

Smoking Healthier Than Gay Marriage? It’s not only in the U.S. that anti-gay groups come out with crazy statements about gays. An Australian Christian leader is now saying that statistics show smoking is healthier than gay marriage. “I think we’re going to owe smokers a big apology when the homosexual community’s own statistics for its health, which it presents when it wants more money for health, are that is has higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide, it has the life of a male reduced by up to 20 years,” said Jim Wallace, head of the Australian Christian Lobby, during a debate at the University of Tasmania today, the Gay Star News reports. “The life of smokers is reduced by something like seven to 10 years and yet we tell all our kids at school they shouldn’t smoke.” And Wallace went on: “Where gay marriage has been introduced, or civil unions, it hasn’t changed the level of suicide … We have to accept the unfortunate levels of suicide, the unfortunate levels of excessive drug use (are) because of the nature of the lifestyle.”

group of people shouting anti-gay remarks; when he confronted them he was punched and bottled, suffering from several cuts to his face. Young’s mother, Sue Fallon, then went onto Wipe Out Homophobia’s Facebook page to share his story. “Luckily it does not look that bad. But all I can think of is what might have been. “I am extremely proud of my son for what he did, she wrote. I know for a fact that if he came across the same situation again he would react the same, it’s just how he is.
Gay Teen Shot 14 Times by Father in Turkey Despite being regarded by many as a “modern” country, homosexuality in Turkey still leads to major levels of violence. Last July, a gay teen was shot 14 times by his uncle and father because of his sexuality, the Hurriyet Daily News reports. The murdered 17-yearold, identified as RA, was allegedly staying at a friend’s house when his uncle found him, dragged his home, and after an argument, the uncle and the teen’s father shot the teenager. The body was then thrown on the side of a road. Gay community members in Turkey are saying the family, which apparently has powerful connections in the country, tried to cover up the murder. The family wanted to cover up the murder which happened one month ago because they were a rich and powerful tribal family. They wanted the police to hide the incident, an anonymous source told the Hurriyet Daily News. We are subjected to violence, but there is no place where we can make a complaint or search for our rights. Police insult and swear at us, doctors make fun of us.

What is PREZISTA? PREZISTA is a prescription anti-HIV medicine used with ritonavir and other anti-HIV medicines to treat adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. PREZISTA is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Grindr Gets Political File Photo
Casual Dating App Mobiliizes By Sergio N. Candido sergio.candido@sfgn.com

f you thought Grindr was merely a tool to find a hot date for the weekend, think again: The gay dating app has announced it will carry an effort to mobilize and educate gay men with sights on the upcoming 2012 November elections. According to its website, Grindr will start delivering geo-targeted messages about gay rights issues to its 1.5 million users, not only informing them about what’s at stake for gay men, but also urging them to vote for candidates that support the LGBT community. “We must elect not only a president but representatives and senators who are supportive of our community and our equality,” said Joel Simkhai, founder and CEO of Grindr, in a statement. “Local elections have national impact, so we want to use Grindr as a tool for mobilizing and connecting gay men around the country to help make a combined national impact.”

Grindr for Equality will work, for example, by alerting Grindr users in Minnesota to a constitutional ban on gay marriage that has been proposed and encourage them to contact their local representatives, according to its website. “All elections are won or lost on the local level,” Simkhai said. “There is no election or town too small to have a gay voice. We’ll use Grindr to unite gay men across the country, make that voice grow louder and have a nationwide impact.”

Famous Gay Marriage Play ‘8’ Hits Premiers Lake Worth SFGN’s editor in chief to star in show By Sergio Candido sergio.candido@sfgn.com
P
roposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the right to marry, shocked many in the LGBT community. People will get to relive those moments, feel the pain of old wounds, and ponder on the future when “8,” a poignant play about the court’s decision on gay rights, comes to Lake Worth on Sept. 14. The play is based on the is true-life account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown). Screenwriter Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning film “Milk” and the film “J. Edgar,” based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. “People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no
other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter,” said Dustin Lance Black in a statement. “The goal of ‘8’ is to show the world that marriage equality is a basic constitutional right. The facts are on our side and truth always finds the light.” This one-night-only reading will take place at the Lake Worth Playhouse, which is partnering with LGBT organization Compass for the play. “It’s a piece of one of the most important issues that everyone needs to hear. I want in my lifetime to celebrate with my family and friends that everyone has the right to marry the person they love. That the Lake Worth Playhouse can be a part of that is very special to me,” said Jodie Dixon-Mears, artistic director at the Lake Worth Playhouse. All the proceeds from this event will go to the Lake Worth Playhouse, Compass and the American Foundation for Equal Rights. SFGN’s editor in chief, Jason Parsley, will be reprising the role of Ryan Kendall (Plaintiffs’ witness).

‘The Secret Life’:
Homosexuality in Uganda
By Benjamin McKey
B
eing an openly gay man living in the U.S., I am able to walk upon the streets without the fear of being considered a “criminal” or undergo convictions due to the sole fact that I am gay. Homosexual men and women in Uganda, on the other hand, don’t have this freedom; gay men and women are being oppressed in Uganda.
Contemporary Problems
Submitted Photo
According to the Global Notebook, “Uganda’s homophobia is a result of deeprooted domestic cultural issues and foreign evangelist pressure, both of which the government has been unable to address properly.” (Xie) As a result homosexuals can be sentenced to death or life in prison solely of personal preference. Today not

only in Uganda but as well as other countries including Nigeria and Malawi, homosexuals are beaten, stoned, and arrested immediately after being identified. Each country enacts its own laws with regard to treatment of homosexuality. Uganda, by far is very strict when it comes to laws that are implemented for homosexuals, “life imprisonment would be the minimum sentence for homosexual behavior.” (Xie) Gays who have repeated homosexual “offenses”, have sex with a minor, or are found to be HIV positive are automatically sentenced to the death penalty. With Uganda’s lack of information or resources for education on homosexuality, common thought is that homosexuality is a condition that can be treated through therapy. Many Ugandans are under the impression that homosexuality is in fact a mental, or even a physical disease, which we are all aware, is not the case. Current science is now looking at genetics as a factor, which determines sexual prejudice. Global Notebook indicates that there have been
12
many petitions that are being signed in the efforts to end the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. “On March 1, 2010, Ugandan gay right’s activists delivered a petition signed by more than 500,000 people”. Today in Uganda there is a global movement, which unites homosexuals and non-homosexuals in an effort to end the suffering of homosexuals in Uganda and throughout the world Ugandas have limited access to resources that outside of the country’s borders. In March 2009, many locals attended a seminar on “Exposing the Homosexuals Agenda” that was headed by Stephen Langa. From the document titled “How US clergy brought hate to Uganda” one states that “the seminars very title revealed its claim: GLBT people and activists are engaged in a well thought-out plan to take over the world.” (Kaoma) The people of Uganda, government leaders, parliamentarians, police officers, and religious leaders are taking actions as though they were Nazi soldiers in Germany during the War. In a sense, the people of Uganda are naive to the subject that is being presented to them. For anyone to believe that “legalizing homosexuality is on a par with accepting “molestation of children or having sex with animals” is absurd. (Kaoma) Yet another upsetting and disappointing aspect of current contemporary problems is that the people of Uganda are being warned that homosexuals in U.S. are out to recruit other young people in order to be a part of the homosexual community and live a homosexual lifestyle. The information that is being provided to this country is corrupt. Another example of contemporary problems is the one sided views that the lawmakers in Uganda voice. A very important example to look at in order to understand the basic views of lawmakers and government officials can be seen in the following statement that was used as a draft in legislation. “Research indicates that the homosexuality has a variety of negative consequences including higher incidences of violence, sexually transmitted diseases, and use of drugs. The higher incidence of separation and break-up in homosexual relationships also creates a highly unstable environment for children raised by homosexuals through adoption or otherwise, and can have profound psychological consequences on those children. In addition, the promotion of homosexual behavior undermines our traditional family values.” (Kaoma) Uganda needs a change. The Ugandan citizens need to realize that they are obtaining a biased view on homosexuality. There is a whole other spectrum on the issue that has yet to been looked at yet. The government that is run under
Museveni’s rule has been in power since 1986. The government is accused of “harassing gay organizations, promoting discrimination through state media and raiding home of activists.” (Cawthorne) President Museveni and his government have denied the basic rights of LGBT for his own political gains. The Ugandan government is suppressing the homosexual community and has been doing so for many years. It is stated “homosexual acts are criminalized in Uganda under a sodomy law inherited from British colonial times, although punishments were substantially strengthened”. (Cawthorne)
Religious views of Uganda:
“Religious leaders have publicly condemned homosexuality as an intolerable sin.” (Xie) The religious make up of Uganda is a tripartite, three religions, Christianity, Islam, and the indigenous religion of Uganda form the religious complexion of the country. With roughly sixty six percent of the population considered to be Christians stemming from Roman Catholics or Anglicans. (Nation) Today pastors are preaching sermons that are filled with claims as to why the anti-homosexuality bill is needed to stay in place in order to not only to protect children, but families as well. Missionaries are preaching that homosexuality is a sin and that it is black and white in the Bible. This is why the people in Uganda have such a strong feeling as to why
homosexuals should be punished by their sins. It is stated in black and white in the Bible that it is wrong; therefore the wrong should be punished and called out for their wrongdoings. However it is highly doubtable that the missionaries are preaching that it is also a sin to have round haircuts, wear garments of mixed fabrics, eat pork or shellfish, get your fortune told, and even to play with the skin of a pig. If this were the case many more people would be sentenced to death and a lot of new acts and bills would be made in order to punish those people for sinning in other ways other than being a homosexual. To answer one of the questions I posed in the introduction I feel strongly that Western and American International groups are only intensifying the homophobic outlooks in Uganda. The views of the Muslim population as well as the Christian population are both similar when it comes to homosexuality. The Homosexuality-Bill is not only followed by the religious Christian population but also by the population of Uganda as a whole because the country is stating that it is the “morally correct” thing to do. With the people of Uganda having such strong devotion to his or her religion as well as religious leaders preaching biased onesided views on homosexuality the country is united with their belief in regards to the fact that homosexuals need to be eliminated as a whole.

Pompano Gay Murder Still Mystery Virginia Businessman’s Body Recovered 2 years ago Today
F
riends and family of slain murder victim Sam Del Brocco have complained that the Broward Sheriff’s office homicide investigation has inexcusably stalled. But they are not letting up themselves. Today, Jackson and Sandy Bain, friends of Del Brocco, announced that the $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his killer will be extended another year. The slain Virginia businessman’s body was found in a Pompano Beach condo on September 12, 2010, not long after he was last seen having dinner alone at Kelley’s Landing in Fort Lauderdale. BSO’s homicide unit developed competent leads to believe that the killer was another male, who Del Brocco likely invited into his home for a spontaneous, late night hookup. Detectives investigating Del Brocco’s past
14
found out that he kept many of these possible homosexual alliances private, leading an entirely different life in Alexandria, Virginia, where his known associations featured a longtime female social companion. However, the bulk of Del Brocco’s estate, it turns out, was in left in trust for a younger, male business associate at his company, PCI Communications. Del Brocco lived on Windsor Avenue in Alexandria for many years, where he was very popular with his neighbors. Prior to his death, he had just bought a home in the Fort Hunt neighborhood of Fairfax County and moved there. During his life, he recorded three record albums; made dozens of national television appearances, and performed live with his eightpiece band in hotels and resorts from Miami’s Fontainebleau to Caesar’s in Atlantic City. He co-founded PCI Communications in 1986 with
his then-musical director/keyboard player Bob Sprague. It grew into a successful seven-figure enterprise. Stated Jackson Bain, “Many of us who have known Sam a long time have concerns about the case and what the detectives may be overlooking.” The homicide was featured on WSVN last year, and TV correspondent Ted Scouten of WFOR is working on a new update, which should air in the next week. Last year, BSO homicide investigator Tim Duggan stated that “It may have been a random act, or something more than that. If you have a lead, we want to know.” The case is now assigned to Detective Torres, “and has not been abandoned,” according to BSO, who are still circulating a flyer to gather information about the homicide, which they described as “brutal.” BSO Homicide can be reached at 954-321-4210.

Three thousand people attended Judge’s funeral at St Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan, including former President Bill Clinton. He eulogized the priest as “a man who was an example of what has to prevail ... We have to be more like Father Mike than the people who killed him.” As news of his death emerged worldwide, so too did word of his sexual orientation. It was a quiet, loving, comfortably gay pastor that had won international recognition and acclaim. A year later, the U.S. Congress passed The Mychal Judge Police and Fire Chaplains Public Safety Officers Benefit Act into law. This was the first time the federal government ever extended equal benefits for same-sex couples, allowing the domestic partners of public safety officers killed in the line of duty to collect their federal death benefit. Streets have been renamed after Father Mychal Judge, documentaries have been created, and awards have been bestowed, from his homeland of Ireland to New York City. Like so many citizens of the world in the World Trade Center on that day, he was simply a good man doing his duty. We lost many such warriors that day. On that day, rich or poor, black or white, gay or straight did not matter. All of us found in this great loss a bond that is etched and seared into our hearts and souls forever. If you are a kid who grew up in the 1960’s, walking barefoot in the mud at Woodstock, smoking pot in your dorm room, calling for peace and love and truth, well, days like 9/11 are reminders that the world has grown up, but not the way we planned for it to be, not the way we planned it at all. jimnista
W
e are a gay newspaper, but 9/11 was hardly a ‘gay’ event. On that fateful day, America, the melting pot of diversity, was reminded how precious all life is, and how fleeting it can become. In memory of that day, SFGN shares just one short story of the openly gay Franciscan priest, Father Mychal Judge, who rushed to the North Tower when he heard of the calamity. In the emergency command post then being established, he stood amidst the debris and rubble, praying for those lost and assisting those who survived. But when the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., carnage and debris went flying through the North Tower lobby, killing many inside, including Father Judge. An NYPD lieutenant recovered Judge’s body. Assisted by two firemen and two civilian bystanders, they carried it out of the North Tower lobby to nearby St. Peter’s Church. You may remember the imagery. It was captured in the documentary film 9/11, and the photograph of Judge’s body being carried out of the rubble by five men evolved to become one of the most compelling pictures from that remarkable day. Mychal Judge was designated as “Victim 0001” and thereby recognized as the first official victim of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Other victims died before him including aircrew, passengers, and occupants of the towers, but Judge was the first certified fatality because his was the first body to be recovered and taken to the coroner.

Porn Shoot Leads to Navy Boot
FabScout Model Discharged from NROTC
By Jason Parsley jason.parsley@sfgn.com
phy. Midshipman Andrew Koch, a FabScout model known as Patrick Hunter from Hudson, Florida, is in the third year of a four-year scholarship service contract with the Navy. Last week, a Personnel Review Board (PRB) unanimously determined that Koch’s pornography shoots were grounds for severing his ties with the corps, as they were “inconsistent with good order and discipline,” and “inconsistent with what the Navy deems morally acceptable.” On July 27, Koch was informed by a commanding officer, T.M. Calabrese, that he was being placed on an involuntary leave of absence, while he was being investigated “for an alleged serious moral offense that brings discredit upon the naval service,” which could lead to “disenrollment form the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps.”

A week later the Board concurred, advising Koch that he would also be liable to return all tuition, fees, and educational expenses incurred during his tenure, which could total nearly $26,000. Koch is appealing the decision with the hopes that the Navy will allow him to remain in the ROTC program, writing that he “never meant to disrespect the Navy, never appeared in uniform, and never associated his private work in pornography with the Navy in any way.” Koch further says that “morality is a very subjective idea,” and that his conduct “would not make me any less of a capable officer.” The PRB rejected Koch’s claim, but did note that his conduct was “perfectly legal.” Even so they still concluded it was inconsistent with Navy standards. Upon learning of his proposed termination, Koch contacted SFGN publisher Norm Kent, a first amendment and civil rights attorney, who has previously represented gay servicemen discharged under the now fallen

the ban on gay marriage in his home state of Iowa, took the stage during the convention to tell the crowd why he’ll be voting for Barack Obama: the President supports same-sex marriage. “President Obama understands that. He supports my moms’ marriage,” Wahls, who was also an Eagle Scout pushing to end its gay ban, said. “President Obama put his political future on the line to do what was right. Without his leadership, we wouldn’t be here. President Obama is fighting for our families, all of our families. He has our backs. We have his.” He also contrasted Obama’s position on the issue to that of Mitt Romney. “Gov. Romney says he’s against same-sex marriage because every child deserves a mother and a father,” Wahls said. “I think every child deserves a family as loving and committed as mine. Because the sense of family comes from the commitment we make to each other to work through the hard times so we can enjoy the good ones. It comes from the love that binds us; that’s what makes a family. Mr. Romney, my family is just as real as yours.” Openly gay Massachusetts state Rep. Barney Frank, who recently tied to knot to his longtime partner, focused on Romney’s financial success as governor of Massachusetts, calling him “Myth Romney.” He also briefly attacked the Republican presidential candidate on his stance on LGBT rights, something which is said wasn’t part of his speech, but the soon-to-be-retired state representative decided to add on the run. Another high-profile openly gay public official speaking at the convention was Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin, a Wisconsin state representative running for a Senate seat, pointed out to Obama’s repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as reference of the President’s commitment toward equal rights. “He repealed ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ so that no American ever again has to lie about who they are in order to serve the country we love,” Baldwin said. “Republicans want to write discrimination into our Constitution. But the Wisconsin I know believes that with each passing year and each generation, our country must become more equal, not less.” Miami’s Andrew Tobias, the openly gay treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, talked about finances, as it was expected, but also dedicated a few minutes to praise Obama for his advancement of LGBT rights. “The Democratic Party under the leadership of Barack Obama has dramatically improved the lives of millions of LGBT Americans,” he said.
THE ISSUES Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who’s also the Democratic National Convention chair, boasted about the unprecedented inclusion of a marriage equality plank in the Democratic Party platform. “For the first time, a major party platform recognizes marriage equality as a basic human right” Villaraigosa said. “This is a reflection of who we are as a party and who we can be as a nation, because as Democrats, as Americans, whenever we’ve opened up our party and our country, whenever we’ve opened up doors for more of our people, whenever we’ve deepened our democracy and renewed our commitment to equal justice under the law, we’ve grown stronger as a nation.” During the convention, a video was played showing the Democratic Party’s commitment to marriage equality, which showed Obama saying the relationships of gay and men women should be respected. Another video played at the convention talked about Obama’s repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” showing footage of the signing
Barney Frank, Openly Gay Mass. State Rep
ceremony for the legislation in 2010. “For we are not a nation that says ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ we are a nation that says out of many, we are one,” Obama says in the video. The video was followed by remarks from Iraq war veteran and retired Army Capt. Jason Crow. Crow, who’s straight, took the stage to commend Obama for ending the military’s gay ban and expanding veterans’ benefits. “It was wrong that men and women I served with could be told they weren’t good enough just because of their sexual orientation,” Crow said. “Soldiers who I trusted with my life, and fought alongside with, could be discharged because of who they loved. President Obama did the right thing by ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’”

Major League Players Say NO to H8
LAMBDA I LEGAL IN MIAMI
By Ryan Dixon staff@sfgn.com
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2012 | 6:00 – 9:00 PM
n the wake of the San Francisco 49ers It Gets Better video, news has surfaced of Major League Baseball pitchers taking a stance for marriage equality by posing by themselves and their families for the California based NOH8 Campaign. Three-time-All-Star and World Champion Matt Cain from the San Francisco Giants, Mat Latos of the Cincinnati Reds, and 2010 National League Silver Slugger winner Yovani Gallardo for the Milwaukee Brewers are the first current Major Leaguers to lend their faces to marriage equality. The NOH8 Campaign was started just after Proposition 8 passed on November 8, 2008, in California that recalled California’s marriage equality law. The NOH8 Campaign is a silent, photographic protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley. Photos depict subjects with duct tape over their mouths symbolizing their voices being silenced by Proposition 8 and other legislation worldwide, and NOH8 painted

on one cheek in protest. These three pitchers join a growing list of athletes who use their celebrity to bring attention to the NOH8 Campaign’s mission. Recent athletes who have joined the NOH8 Campaign include NFL free agent C.J. Gable, New England Patriots safety Bret Lockett, NFL free agent Nic Harris, former MLB player Billy Bean, former NFL player Esera Tuaolo and Portland Timbers defender Mike Chabala. Billy Bean and Esera Tuaolo have recently come out of the closet since their retirement.

Interview with The Real L Word’s Kiyomi
Reality TV Star Rocking Across the US Submitted Photo
A&E
By Andrea Dulanto Love her, hate her. But Kiyomi McCloskey and her band Hunter Valentine have infused new life into the third season of The Real L Word. Not exactly revered for her nonmonogamous relationship with on/ off partner Ali, viewers debate whether McCloskey was open enough about the dalliances. Her leadership style with Hunter Valentine also came into question (the word “dictator” was bandied about). At least McCloskey has given viewers something to argue about. And like any drama, sometimes you encounter the unexpected like a pink-haired woman who may alter
McCloskey’s Shane-esque ways. On Thursday, September 6 at 10 p.m., Showtime presented the season finale of The Real L Word. Yet, Kiyomi and Hunter Valentine can also be seen on tour across the U.S. Their third and latest album, Collide and Conquer, debuts in the fall. Florida dates include Jacksonville on September 14, St. Petersburg on September 15 and Orlando on September 17. SFGN interviewed McCloskey via email to discuss how she dealt with reality show cameras, how Hunter Valentine’s music has evolved over the years, and whether the band will ever play in South Florida.
Did you envision Hunter Valentine on a reality show? What was the initial response when The Real L Word approached the band to audition? I never envisioned H.V. on a reality show, but I did think: “Wow, we are all so crazy and have very intense personalities. Someone should film this.” We were all pretty much on board when we were asked to audition. We were all just feeling like it was very surreal and didn’t quite comprehend the “journey” we were about to embark on.
part of the band’s identity. You won’t fully understand Hunter Valentine until you come to a live show.
How was it adjusting to cameras? It was very strange, but you get used to it after about a week. The most difficult part was allowing yourself to be completely vulnerable. It’s a normal, human reaction to want to protect and shield yourself from the outside world when you are going through a hard time and with the show it was all about exposing yourself in those moments. That’s a hard thing to be okay with! It was easy when it was just the band hanging out and having a good time. We helped each other to forget that the cameras were there … being ridiculous with each other. That’s the stuff that didn’t make the cut. You and Laura Petracca have been in Hunter Valentine for eight years. How would you describe the evolution of your music? One of the keys to being in a band, for a long time, is to keep an open mind and be willing to try different things. Laura and I have progressed a lot. Our songwriting has become more intricate and much stronger. Our live shows have become a huge
28

Can you think of a recent show that went really well? What made it great? We had a great show in Ottawa for their Pride celebration … I was really excited, because I bought a brand new amp the day before. The first set got completely screwed up (in my opinion) because the amp just stopped working. So I was kind of bummed out and felt like no one was going to come to the second show. When it came time to play the night show, there was a great crowd, the amp worked and we played a great set. It’s shows like those that make me so grateful for our fans. Without them we would be nothing. What is the best interaction you’ve had with a fan lately? When I hear a fan’s coming out story and how the music has helped them. It means so much to know that our music can help people get through a shitty day. Is there anything that viewers of The Real L Word would be surprised to know about you? I love country music. You have a few tour dates in Florida, but none in South Florida. Do you have any plans to travel here in the future? I would be stoked if we got to tour there. We need to show Florida some more love! Jesse’s Journal
The New Face of Gossip By Jesse Monteagudo
A
File Photo
fter years reporting the news of the world, CNN newsman Anderson Cooper became newsworthy himself. It all started in July when Cooper, after years of speculation, admitted to the world that he is gay. This revelation gave the paparazzi carte blanche to stalk Cooper and his partner of over three years, bar owner Ben Maisani. The paps struck gold when they caught Maisani canoodling with another man in a public park. The gossips were quick to speculate the nature of the Cooper/Maisani relationship: Did Anderson cheat on Ben or do the two men have an open relationship?
Anderson Cooper
(Because that is what gay men do.) This juicy piece of gossip happened at the same time that “Benderson” went on a sea cruise in Croatia in the company of celebs Kelly Ripa, her husband Mark Consuelos, and openlygay Bravo TV executive Andy Cohen. Rumor had it that the outraged Cooper kicked Maisani off the love boat and then found comfort in Cohen’s arms. (According to this line of thinking, two gay men cannot be in close proximity without jumping in bed together.) However, those who expected Cooper to become the gay divorcee were soon disappointed, for Cooper did not throw Maisani overboard. In fact, the couple is back in New York, still living together in Cooper’s converted firehouse. Gay men have been gossiped about for decades, mostly by other gay men. But, on the whole, gay gossip has been about supposedly straight celebrities who are secretly gay or bi. This time, however, the
scuttlebutt is about two openly gay men who allegedly did something that straight celebs do all the time (cheat). This is a refreshing change of pace from the days when all we could do was talk about Tom Cruise’s wives, John Travolta’s children, or Kevin Spacey’s dogs. Even the Advocate or Out, which all too often feature straight celebrities who use the opportunity to tell us how straight they are, now showcase out and proud stars like Australian Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham. Though most LGBT celebrities still keep their sexual or gender orientation to themselves, more and more stars are coming out of their Tinseltown closets. In addition to Mr. Cooper, the past few years has witnessed the comings out of Cooper’s CNN colleague Don Lemon; rapper Frank Ocean (who came out as bisexual); and actors Matthew Bomer, Sean Maher, Jim Parsons and Zachary Quinto. They join the likes of John Barrowman, Neil Patrick Harris, Adam Lambert and Ricky Martin in an evergrowing field. Other, mostly younger stars avoid the coming out process entirely, being openly gay from the get-go. (Chris Colfer of TV’s Glee is the best-known example.) There is still a stigma attached to being gay, however, and we are still waiting for certain “A-List” superstars to come out. We also look forward to the day when an active U.S. football, baseball, basketball or hockey team player will feel comfortable enough to be open about his sexual orientation. It is still easier for a woman to come out as either lesbian or bisexual. (Being openly bisexual did not stop Angelina Jolie from becoming a superstar; or starting a family with the perfectly-straight Brad Pitt.) On the other hand, we do not have to pick up a gay bar rag to read about gay celebs’ love lives or lack thereof. Hardly an issue of People, US or Entertainment Weekly goes by without some mention of Ellen Degeneres’s houses; Rachel Maddow’s opinions; or Rosie O’Donnell’s marriages (or divorces). Before her recent death, Sally Ride was known as the first American woman to go into space. Now she is remembered as the first lesbian astronaut. Of course, this does not mean we will stop dishing the dirt about the likes of Cruise, Travolta, Spacey or Will Smith (not that they are gay or anything like that). Some things are just too precious to ignore. But the days when “gay celebrities” only meant porn stars or Harvey Fierstein are firmly behind us; and I am glad that they are. And while it is unlikely that reality show favorites Reichen Lehmkuhl or Will Wikle will ever become superstars, being out is no longer an impediment to getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hopefully, this will encourage other, still-closeted celebrities to take that next step, and admit what half the world already knows.

Laws and Couples
What You Need to Know as a Same-Sex Couple in Florida
By Gideon Grudo gideon.grudo@sfgn.com

he was married in Washington, D.C. But Florida didn’t recognize her marriage. When her lesbian partner left her to marry a man, there were issues — but only for her. Florida was okay with her partner being married to two different people in two
few years ago. Now we have single gay people wanting to adopt — it’s a different process than if you’re married.” For a same-sex couple, an adoption is called a second parent adoption. The difference between this and a stepparent adoption, what heterosexual adoptions are called, is the paperwork, namely. Stepparent adoptions are streamlining, Alper said. There are less forms, no home study, and it’s quick. A second parent adoption is harder, Alper explained, using himself and his partner as an example. “I would have to have a home study and fill out all these forms,” he said, adding that it’s doable, though, and both partner can become the parents of the child. “A lot of couples don’t even know it’s an option. It’s important for the emotional benefits, but also protects the child.” When both parents are parents of a child, Alper said, the child is that much more protected. “If I wanted to pick my son from school, for example, will the school recognize me as a parents?” He asked. “What if my kid gets sent to the doctor? A second parent adoption legalizes that aspect.” However, it’s important to remember that
such an adoption has absolutely no effect on the relationship between the couple — their legal status doesn’t change one bit. Alper said that this is expected, as it’s the same way a heterosexual is treated — an adoption not affecting the couple’s legal status. In order to achieve couple-specific rights, therefore, it’s important to delve into estate planning. “Estate planning is a great idea for any couple, gay or straight,” he said. “The key difference that I tell my clients — a court will go out of their way to recognize a married couple. They’re married, they’ll say, so the wife can make decision for the husband. But Florida doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage, and you never know what might happen.” Alper grew up in Orlando and left for school at UC Irvine in South California and Emory Law School in Atlanta, earning an economics undergraduate degree and a law degree, respectively. It was during school at Emory that Alper started www.domesticpartnershipflorida. com, a blog dedicated to informing people about their rights in the state. It’s been running since 2007 and Alper posts new pieces every few days. The topics at the site are gay adoption, domestic partnership,
dissolution and divorce, gay marriage, and wills and estate planning. Alper started the blog because he felt it would service a group of people who needed the information and couldn’t easily get it anywhere else. “There was information about how the law applied to same-sex couples, but it was hard to find and often inaccurate. Many blogs explained how laws should be changed, but not how to live with them,” he said, adding that he and his partner just want to live their lives. “A lot of people just don’t understand what’s legal and what isn’t. A lot of lawyers only know other lawyers, and assume people know a lot more than they do.” Alper just wants his clients and the general public to be informed. That’s his end goal, from the practice he runs alone in Orlando. “My goal is to give people the correct information,” he said. “It’s easy to find out what the Democratic Party is hoping to change, but it’s harder to find out what you can do today.”

The case is still ongoing, so Orlando attorney Gideon Alper couldn’t discuss it in much more detail. But it’s one of those cases he thinks of that portrays the legal complexities that same-sex couples face in Florida, one of many cases he’s handled at his private Orlando-practice, a practice which he said can serve couples from around the state, and often does. From Miami to the panhandle, Alper’s clients need help with estate planning and same-sex adoption, mostly, his two areas of expertise. “A lot of people think of estate planning as death planning. It’s partly that, but it’s really also protecting your relationship while it’s going on and protecting children,” Alper told SFGN. “Same-sex adoption is an interesting area because it was illegal here until just a

Chamber of Commerce Joins Trade Mission to Colombia By Jesse Monteagudo

Keith Blackburn, GFLGLCC President
“This is the very first U.S. Government backed LGBT Trade Mission anywhere. The NGLCC had an earlier Trade Mission to Argentina last year, but what makes this one historic is the backing of the U.S. Government,” Blackburn said, “Government agencies are involved including the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. AID, U.S. Department of State, Export-Import Bank of the United States, and the U.S. Commercial Service. In addition there will be 15 to 20 Delegates.” The Obama Administration, Blackburn says, “has been extremely supportive of this initiative.” Recently, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said, “I’m delighted to see our shared interest formalized in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Chamber (NGLCC) and the Department of Commerce. It is the primary mission of the Commerce Department to help spur economic growth that can create good jobs in America.” While NGLCC Co-Founder and President Justin Nelson added: “The support and backing of the U.S. Government gives the mission increased validation as we work with our
32
Colombian counterparts and that is good for our members who will be attending and looking for new and expanded markets. The mission highlights the administration’s commitment to a fully‑inclusive economic recovery.” On May 15, 2012, the United StatesColombia Trade Promotion Agreement went into effect. This agreement eliminated tariffs and duties on 80 percent of consumer and industrial products sold to Colombia and more than halves those remaining from 10.8 percent to 4.0 percent, making Colombia a market for U.S. exporters and providing them an advantage over exporters from non-free-trade countries. “With the entry of the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement into force, great things can happen for U.S. businesses. We are excited to support LGBT businesses abroad as well as at home, and we look forward to working with them to expand their customer base into Latin America,” said NGLCC CoFounder and CEO Chance Mitchell. Colombia is a “gay welcoming” country, according to Blackburn, who is quick to add that “This Trade Mission was organized with the assistance of the Colombian Government. From a personal experience, I have several friends who have been to Colombia and all of them felt welcome.” As representative of a community where tourism is the primary focus of the economy, Blackburn will focus on “bringing more LGBT tourists from Colombia.” But an increase in tourism will not be the only goal of the trip, which also promises opportunities for all sorts of business. “We live in a global economy and small businesses, many of them LGBT-owned, need help understanding how to break into foreign markets,” said Mitchell, in a prepared statement. “LGBT entrepreneurs are innovators and through this partnership we will be able to equip them with the tools they need to understand the exporting
process and be successful in finding customers in their backyard or an ocean away.” Blackburn will also join other delegates at the first LGBT Summit of the Americas. The Summit will take place in conjunction with the Trade Mission and bring together LGBT business leaders from the U.S., Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Mexico and Uruguay. Invited speakers include the Honorable Angelino Garzon, Vice President of Colombia and the Honorable Peter McKinley, Ambassador of the United States. “The Summit will include a discussion on LGBT Human Rights in Latin America, a U.S. Aid Overview, and a discussion titled ‘Equality through Business: LGBT Chambers of Commerce and their Impact on LGBT Equality.’ Areas of discussion will include advocacy, tourism and international supplier diversity,” Blackburn said. The Trade Mission presents an opportunity for LGBT-certified businesses to meet counterparts, including buyers and business leaders, and to work with the commerce attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota and the Department of Commerce to build connections crucial to international export and import trading. Blackburn will be keeping Chamber members informed via Facebook (facebook.com/ GFLGLCC) and promises to give SFGN readers a full report when he returns.

Buried Treasure: Meth in Gay Porn By Ryan Dixon
I
Submitted Photo
have HIV. I did porn. Hell, I did bareback porn. I drink socially and at home. I’ve never done any hard narcotics. Now Treasure Island Media (TIM) is taking all three and putting them into one in their new skin flick titled, Slammed. The question that arises from this film is: is it socially or morally wrong for TIM and director Liam Cole to depict real people actually using
Zach Sire, Gay Porn Blogger
crystal meth while having unprotected sex? Gay porn news site, The Naked Sword first posed the question: “Is it safe?” Seeing the “is it safe question” had me thinking that the writer was going to be dissecting the video for what it is: a porn showing drug use. Instead, the piece left it to the readers to comment on the safety of the film. Turns out, the website’s parent company has a business agreement with the TIM to stream the studio’s content on thesword.com. Of the 50 comments the post has received, only one or two called the scene hot or sexy in any way. The rest condemned it as disgusting and a step back for gays and stereotypes. Sword reader Vanilla Cream said that watching the film was “like watching ‘Faces of Death’ or a snuff film. It’s really not sexy … At the bare minimum; Treasure Island should be condemned for not taking care of its models and fostering a fan base for ‘addict porn’.” TIM described the film as “London (redacted)-pigs party hard in Liam Cole’s most extreme video yet. SLAMMED is an honest and true record of lawless 21st century man-sex: Real, raw and straight to the point.”
On Treasure Island’s blog about the film, Cole defended Slammed by saying he made the film without any guidance from TIM. He continued by saying that the movie “reflects my interests, not the company as a whole. The video is an accurate document of what is happening all around me in London. I’m not glorifying anything or ‘selling a lifestyle’, I’m showing things the way they are. Even when I was making it, I was thinking of it as my own personal way of understanding this moment in time, and as a historical document. Things weren’t always this way, and they will change again in the future. But right now, from where I’m looking, this is where we’re at.” According to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, intravenous drug users (IDUs) accounted for 4,500 new estimated HIV infections in 2009, or 9 percent of all new estimated HIV infections. Black men and women accounted for the greatest number of new infections among IDUs with 1,200 and 940 respectively. The CDC did say that there was no statistically significant change in HIV incidence in IDUs between 2006 through 2009 (5,300 in 2006; 5,900 in 2007; and 5,100 in 2008). Studies of injected and non-injection illicit substances for MSM who contract HIV have not been consistent even though drug use for MSM is considered dangerously high. SFGN spoke with gay porn blogger Zach Sire, the author of article discussed above. He wanted to stress the statements he gave us were his own personal opinion and not the opinions of The Naked Sword. “My job is to post stories that get comments and turn advertising dollars for The Sword,” Sire said. He did say he thought the use of meth in porn was “ridiculous, irresponsible and completely unsafe regardless of bareback sex or not” and that “studios shouldn’t be doing this. They’re obviously doing this for attention and publicity. I’m sure I’m only feeding the beast and contributing to the problem by writing about it”. What it all boils down to is that people having sex know what they like. But this film may turn out to be the porn version of Hollywood’s Saw. Bareback sex is playing a game with your health. Add drugs and alcohol into the mix is just asking for a disaster. What’s the next step to make a buck in gay porn? Sire quipped that animals haven’t been done yet but it wouldn’t surprise him. Is Mr. Ed still around?

POSTCARDS FROM KEY WEST
Upcoming: 113-Mile Trek Over Water and “Salacious Unveiling” on Land By Steve Smith
N
ow that our Womenfest attendees have left, Key West will prep for the 40th annual Key West Poker Run. This allwelcome event begins with a Duval Crawl Thursday, Sept. 13. Starting at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, we expect riders on about 10,000 motorcycles to travel down the Florida Keys Overseas Highway to Key West — a trek over 113 miles of highway surrounded by emerald and lapis waters, traversing 42 bridges. Rarely does one journey over a more awe-inspiring highway. Riders draw “poker” cards at designated stopping points and those with the 10 best
34
poker hands are eligible to play in a winnertake-all round of Texas Hold ‘Em, competing for a new Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster Iron motorcycle or $6,000 cash. A section of lower Duval Street will be closed to car traffic so bikers with parking passes can park on the street and display their bikes. (I plan to bring my “Hardly Harley” Super 8 moped down and park it between a couple of custom “hogs.”) Funds raised from this exuberant event benefit the charities of the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club and the Diabetes Research Institute. Just around the corner too is Fantasy Fest’s

“end of time” party, taking a lighthearted look at the ancient apocalypse prophecy stating the world will end in December 2012. Our outrageous masking and costuming festival is set for Oct. 19-28 and themed “A-Conch-Alypse,” since native-born Key Westers are called “conchs.” It features 10 days of revelry and more than 40 masquerade balls, costume contests and parties — all leading up to the lavish twilight parade Saturday, Oct. 27. One of Fantasy Fest’s must-attend events is the 30th annual Headdress Ball, presented
by the Key West Business Guild and held Tuesday, Oct. 23. It’s themed “Salacious Unveiling: The End of Time,” and we will make time stand still as we dazzle attendees with a promenade of extravagant headdresses and a cabaret evening starring great local entertainers. Buy your tickets early, since this event is always a sell-out (there are still a few tables left, but DON’T delay!). Meanwhile, look for me on my “bike” during the Poker Run and tune in for my next blog.

The
end result means a healthier, happier you. You are not alone. Twothirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Just last month, researchers at the Mayo Clinic proposed classifying physical inactivity as a medical condition so that public health measures can be taken on a national level. “A sedentary lifestyle is a common cause of obesity, and excessive body weight and fat in turn are catalysts for diabetes, high blood pressure, joint damage and other serious health problems,” said Dr. Michael Joyner, Mayo Clinic physiologist in the August edition of Journal of Physiology. “Prolonged lack of exercise can cause the body to become disconditioned (seen in sedentary workers with desk jobs or immobilized patients), with wide-ranging structural and metabolic changes: the heart rate may rise excessively during physical activity, bones and muscle atrophy, physical endurances wane, and blood volume decline. “I would argue that physical inactivity is the root cause of many of the common [medical] problems that we have,” said Dr. Joyner. “If we medicalize it, we could then develop a way, just like we’ve done for addiction, cigarettes and other things, to give people treatments, and lifelong treatments, that focus on behavioral modifications and physical activity.” There are four components to successful weight loss: Nutrition (which is a critical part of the battle), Exercise (both resistance training and cardio exercise), Sleep, and Stress Management (the stress hormone, cortisol, has been shown to promote weight gain).
Fitness Guy By Peter Jackson, CPT
Seriously, how do I lose 50 pounds?
Q: Okay, I’m 35 years old, 5’9 and weigh 249 pounds. I love eating and I hate exercise. My doctor just told me my cholesterol is out of control, my blood pressure is high, I’m pre-diabetic and I have GOT to lose weight. I just joined a gym and I’m trying to exercise, but I can hardly do 10 minutes on the treadmill. Seriously, how do I lose 50 pounds? A: You lose it one pound at a time. It takes time, patience and an unconditional commitment by you to adopt a healthy lifestyle in order to improve the quality of your life – and save it.You have got to believe that you and your health are more important than any pleasure you may derive from donuts, pizza, cheeseburgers and other unhealthy food. You have got to believe that walking, bicycling and engaging in other forms of exercise are worth the effort if the
Here are a few practical steps you can take to shed the weight: CLEAN UP YOUR NUTRITION: Cut out all fast foods, fried and processed foods, sugary cereals and snacks as well as sodas. Increase your intake of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein. Get into the habit of eating lean protein with every meal. Good sources of protein include chicken breast, fish (especially tuna), turkey, eggs, beans, yogurt, cheese, milk. BECOME ACTIVE: Start with simple things like parking farthest from the mall entrance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and opting to take a long walk with the dog instead of vegging in front of the television. Build on that momentum by planning activities outside of the gym. Ideas include swimming, walking, cycling, kayaking… the more active you are, the more calories you burn. EXERCISE: Incorporate cardiovascular as well as resistance training into your new lifestyle. If the thought of going to a big gym makes you uncomfortable, consider using an experienced personal trainer for even a few sessions (but
38
ideally three to six months) to get you on the right track. A knowledgeable personal trainer will be able to write a good metabolic training program for you, teach you proper form and help you make important changes to your nutrition. You will get the encouragement you need and, trust me, once the weight starts to fall off and your muscle tone shines through, you will be committed to a regular exercise program. DRINK MORE WATER: Needs vary between individuals, but a good rule of thumb is to divide your bodyweight by 2 and drink that number in ounces. That means a person who weighs 150 pounds should drink roughly 75 ounces of water (about 4 standard bottles) while a 200-pound individual should consume about 100 ounces (approximately six bottles of water). REDUCE STRESS: High levels of the stress hormone cortisol have been linked to obesity, especially in the abdominal area. Exercise has been proven to reduce cortisol levels. So if you are one of those people who are “too busy working to have time for exercise”, you should re-think your priorities. Do you have time for
a stroke? Start by a brisk 45-minute walk or riding a bicycle three evenings a week. You will soon feel the difference! SUPPLEMENT: Take a good multivitamin and fish oil capsules daily. The multivitamin will compensate for any deficiencies in your diet while the omega-3 fatty acids (which the body cannot manufacture) in your fish oil capsules will help to keep your heart healthy, lower triglycerides, reduce inflammation in joints and elsewhere in the body and may help with depression. Speak to your doctor about dosage. My favorite natural source of omega3’s is fish, especially salmon and tuna. CHEW, DON’T SWALLOW: Chewing your food slowly not only improves digestion but allows your stomach to send the signal to the brain that you’re full. This prevents over-eating which results from “swallowing” your food. Instead of eating everything on your plate, make a point to stop when you are 80 percent full. The long-
term lesson here is portion control. SNACK, DON’T SKIP MEALS: Never skip meals, especially breakfast. Practice eating a small but healthy midmorning snack (for example, an apple and 10 whole almonds) and a smaller lunch. Eventually, you can add a mid-afternoon snack as well. Plan ahead and pack your snacks the night before. Contact me directly to answer any additional questions you may have.

room and wrapped around the walls outside waiting to get in, Calfo knew she needed a bigger venue. “I am really looking forward to attending!” FAU student Octaviano Rios wrote on the facebook page for the event. This year, Calfo booked a room to fit 400 students if necessary, but she’s expecting 250 to turn out. FAU’s LGBTQA/Straight Alliance, Lambda United, is also helping Calfo and the Resource Center host the event. “Hopefully we’ll have a drag show every year,” Calfo said. Submitted Photo

NIGHTLIFE
Leather Incursion By Ryan Dixon staff@sfgn.com
F
riday night’s scene in Alibi’s Manchester Room was nothing out of the ordinary — if you were at Ramrod. The Leather Men’s Brotherhood, producers of the upcoming Leather Masked Ball in November, hosted their monthly Leather Incursion night at the Alibi. The Incursion occurs the first Friday of every month from 8 to 10 p.m. around the Gayborhood of Wilton Manors. The reason Leather Men’s Brotherhood hosts Incursion is to create continuous awareness of the Ball, promote other events that the Brotherhood puts on throughout the year, provide another
opportunity in addition to the Enforced Dress Code monthly gathering of Leathermen and women, and to have visible Leather support of local businesses. The turnout for these nights is always high. Bars often seem fuller when 30 people in leather are standing all together on one side of the bar. Sure, there are stares and finger pointing, but what matters is that the Brotherhood is enjoying the fellowship and the bar enjoys the influx of alcohol sales. The only thing that would make these incursions more exciting aside from a higher attendance would be to see people in other fetish gear like rubber or sports gear.
