hat $65 million offer by a Hong Kong billionaire to find the man who could woo his lesbian daughter seemed like something out of a movie.Well, soon it could be. According to Variety, Sacha Baron Cohen has started working on a new film based on Cecil Chao, the 76-year-old Chinese shipping industry tycoon who recently offered a fortune to try to get his lesbian daughter, Gigi, on a straight path. The offer made international headlines. Cohen’s film is tentatively titled “The Lesbian.” Despite what many may think, Gigi Chao said she wasn’t upset with her father for making such public offer. “I’m actually on very, very loving terms with my father. We speak on a daily basis. He just has a very interesting way of expressing his fatherly love,” the 33-year-old told the Associated Press. Gigi is married to her wife in France. According to the Telegraph, she has also dated men in the past. Not a whole lot more in known about the movie, other than that Cohen is expected to act in it.

U

ltimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has come out saying the biggest regret in his 12-year career in the UFC has been using the word “faggot” in a 2009 video blog. “That’s the only thing throughout the 12 years of running the UFC.The way I came off in that thing, people still think I’m some kind of homophobe, and I’m not. That still bothers me,” White told MMA Mania. White erupted after an anonymous source criticized his management style in a 2009 article on a mixed martial arts website. He called the source in the story “a pussy and a fucking faggot,” for remaining anonymous. White apologized to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation the very next day, saying he “never intended to hurt the gay community,” but he still regrets those words. Last year, White defended the LGBT community, saying he wished there were openly gay fighters in his MMA competition after a Brazilian fighter said he wouldn’t train with a gay man. “I could care less if there’s a gay fighter in the UFC. There probably is and there’s probably more than one. I mean, it’s 2012. Give me a break,” he told MMA Mania. Dakota Cochrane, an MMA fighter competing in this year’s Ultimate Fighter series, the reality TV spin off of the UFC competition, disclosed that he had

MORE WEBites Gay Prides Allowed in Russia ay pride parades will be allowed in Russia following a decision by the country’s Supreme Court that said the demonstrations do not violate “gay propaganda” laws. According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the court made the ruling in August, but was not made public until this week. This new ruling makes illegal the “direct promotion of homosexual relation,” but not pride events or public discussions of gay issues. It is unclear how this decision affects Moscow’s banning of gay pride parades for the next 100 years.

Tipton added: “I’m a businessman. When you walk in the door, if you’re able to do the job and you’re focused on your job, that’s all that’s important.” The comments were made right after

ay British actor Rupert Everett is not afraid to voice his opinion: Just two weeks after saying he can’t think of “anything worse than being brought up by two dads,” he has added he thinks gays wanting to get married is “beyond tragic.” In an interview with The Guardian, the actor said: “It’s just a waste of time in the heterosexual world, and in the homosexual world I find it personally beyond tragic that we want to ape this institution that is so clearly a disaster.” And he added: “For me, being gay was about wanting to do the opposite of the straight world, so I think that’s where my problems in this particular area come from. But that’s me, just me. I’m not having a go at gay couples who do.” Everett told The Telegraph that he received hate mail and death threats after his comments on gay parenting, but that doesn’t seem to have silenced the “My Best Friend’s Wedding” star.

the Romney/Obama presidential debate on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Teen Kills Gay Man and his Cat, Films Everything n 18-year-old in Wales is undergoing a trial after killing an elderly gay man and his cat, and then boasting about the crime on video. Wales Online reports that Bleddyn Rees King met 63-year-old that David Evans online and arranged to go to the man’s home, where the incident occurred. The prosecutor, Michael Mather-Less, believes King committed the crime to rob the man and videotape it to scare off others who may have owed him money. “We say it was a plain and simple premeditated robbery with extreme violence contemplated,” Mather-Less said. The Welsh newspaper also reports that Evans’ body had 72 injuries, including multiple stab wounds. King set Evans’ house on fire after murdering him to try to cover the evidence, the prosecutor said. “This was brutality of the extreme kind and after he was dead, the defendant videoed his body while giving a dialogue of what he had done and why he was doing it. It was because he was short of money,” the prosecutor told the jurors. For his part, King defended himself saying the older man sexually crossed the line and he “lost control and beat him in a fury.” The case is ongoing.

Australian Rugby Joins Fight Against Homophobia By Ryan Dixon

S

ports in the United States have been making strides, albeit small ones, in combating homophobia inside the lines. On another hemisphere, Australian rugby has been proven a leader in acceptance and respect — both athletically and socially. Australian Rules footballer Jason Ball was the spearhead for change when he became the first player in his sport to come out of the closet. Ball said the homophobia he heard and saw from teammates was a result of them thinking there was no way a gay man would be on their team, let alone play rugby at all. To his surprise, Ball was met with open arms instead of the hostility he assumed he would get from telling his teammates he was gay. “It was the one place I never thought I’d jason ball be able to come out. Ever. It just felt like a really hostile environment. I worried I’d be bullied, maybe I’d get kicked out of the side, maybe the opposition would treat me differently or I’d get abuse [from supporters] over the fence,” he told The Sunday Age. ”I didn’t know any footballers who were gay, so I could only assume the worst, and it scared me.” Ball urged the Australian Football League to screen antihomophobia ads, and to stage a gay pride round, similar to the league’s multicultural and indigenous rounds. League boss Andrew Demetriou told 3AW that the league was looking into the possibility. “If we get behind something we genuinely believe in and if it’s something that we think we can help raise awareness and shift attitudes then we would support it,” he said.”We would consult with experts in this matter and get the best advice to see how we can address this issue properly like we did with illicit drugs. I want to make sure then if we do go down this track we do it properly.” Ball’s petition garnered more than 26,000 signatures through social change movement www.Change.org. He told The Age he was delighted by the development. “The fact that the AFL is considering a pride round, amongst a host of other options, is amazing news. Nothing would send a better message to gay players and fans that they’re welcome and included in this game we love,” he said. The Australian Football League (which is governed by rules that are different from traditional rugby; for the difference between the two, see side bar) has started to run anti-homophobia ads from No To Homophobia before matches starting with their Grand Final matches earlier this month. The No to Homophobia Campaign challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia wherever it occurs in the community, including in sports. There are strong links between harassment and health issues like anxiety disorders, depression and even self-harm and suicide. “Sadly, in many sports – particularly male sports – homophobic insults and abuse are commonplace and

4

directed towards both players and umpires,” said No To Homophobia coordinator Daniel Scoullar. “The AFL is the most influential sports organisation in Australia and it has a huge leadership role in the community. They would be the first to admit that there hasn’t been enough work done to stamp out homophobic harassment and vilification in football, but we are impressed with their initial commitment to making up for that by partnering with us over the next year and beyond.” The AFL and No to Homophobia are still working out the details that would include public initiatives such as the AFL’s letter of support and playing the anti-homophobia ads at football stadiums before games. It will also involve grassroots education and enforcement of anti-vilification guidelines throughout the sports code starting with junior leagues and continuing right up to the elite level. No to Homophobia will be speaking to other sports organizations, as well, over the next year. The organization’s leadership hopes to use the progress they’ve made with the AFL and the excellent work already done in Australia by Hockey Victoria and the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (through its Fair Go, Sport initiative) as a model for how sporting codes can make sure they are safe and welcoming places for everyone in the community. For more information on how No To Homophobia and the AFL are working together, go to www.notohomophobia. com.au.

Australian Rules Football Vs. Australian Football League Traditional rugby and Australian Rules Football (which guide games from the Australian Football League) have some differences that few know about, according to Daniel Scoullar. While both use an oval ball similar in size, the traditional ball is thinner, closer to an American football. Tackling above the knees and below the shoulders is allowed by both. And here are the differences: Traditional Rugby Rectangular field 15 players Two 35 minutes halves Players must stay onside 2 vertical goal posts and a crossbar which the ball must pass through and over to score. Australian Rules (AFL) Oval field 18 players Four 20 minute quarters No offsides 4 vertical goal posts with no crossbars, Ball passes through outer post for 1 point and between inner posts for a 6 point goal

National Coming Out Day Profiles LGBT Visibility By Holly Grigg-Spall, EDGE

T

his month sees two national events encouraging openness in showing support for LGBT Americans. The Human Rights Campaign-organized National Coming Out Day is on October 11 and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s Spirit Day falls on October 19. Both initiatives are looking to expand their participant base via social media and by widening the definition of what it is to “come out.” “Coming out isn’t just for the LGBT community. You can come out as the sister or the parent of an LGBT person,” said HRC spokesperson Candace Gingrich-Jones. “This is a unique opportunity to express being an ally to all LGBT people. It’s about speaking your mind. And in this election year, we’re asking people to come out and vote because there’s a lot at stake for LGBT Americans and where we really need to be visible is in the voting booth.” The HRC’s Coming Out for Equality Facebook appprovides the opportunity to give an endorsement for equality by sporting an equality badge on personal social networking sites. National Coming Out Day was inspired by the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights and it has since attracted the advocacy of many LGBT and ally public figures. It is primarily a grassroots campaign with celebrations taking place on a local level, albeit simultaneously. Spirit Day has a shorter history but has made a big impact since it began in 2010. That year, 15 year-old high school student Brittany McMillan decided to create an event in her community to show support for LGBT youths. “We wear purple for spirit; it’s what the color represents on the LGBT flag,” said McMillan. “It started with just me and my friends at school and then GLAAD saw my Facebook event and took it up for a national campaign.” Brittany’s efforts were in response to the number of young LGBT people that she became aware of through Tumblr who had committed suicide. Last year saw top daytime TV shows’ hosts, musicians and actors go purple for the cause. Corporations such as AMC, Warner Bros and Yahoo encourage their employees to participate. The White House showed its support in 2011 by changing the backgrounds on its website and social media sites to purple.

This year Ambassadors include blogger Perez Hilton, Nickelodeon’s Avan Jogia, “Pretty Little Liars” star Shay Mitchell, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, TV icon George Takei and daytime talk show host Wendy Williams. The Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second largest, will participate by sharing information about Spirit Day with students. Many national landmarks including the LAX Pylon Lights and the JFK traffic tower will turn purple. “I love how excited people get about Spirit Day. The pictures of celebrities wearing purple, they keep popping up throughout the year and that keeps the message going,” said McMillan of the ongoing effect of her inspiring idea. Jordan Addison recently became an Internet sensation as he documented his experience of bullying and harassment on his college campus in Virginia. When students vandalized his car a local repair shop owner provided, for free, $10,000 worth of work to bring the car back to better than new. Addison is now an ambassador for Spirit Day. “I’ve struggled with bullying and in high school I attempted suicide. We need to, as a society, take active responsibility for the welfare of LGBT youths,” said Addison. “It makes my heart swell up with emotion to see the support Spirit Day has gained. I’m in a conservative Southern state and even my local TV station went purple.” Across the country, plans are being put into action for rallies, parties and the building of creative closets from which the LGBT and their supporters can literally come out. Activists are taking to the Spirit Day website to pledge to turn purple. “More young people are coming out younger and younger and they need our support. This generation is not willing to not be themselves and they believe that they as individuals are worth fighting for,” said Gingrich-Jones. “When National Coming Out Day was founded, the LGBT population was not as visible as it is today,” she continued. “It’s important to someone coming out to not feel like you’re the only one. The public is generally much more supportive today but we need to put a face on that majority of supporters. We must all speak up so that others know how we feel about this.” EDGE Media is a media partner of SFGN

Anti-Gay Law Costs Jacksonville Dearly J By Sergio N. Candido

acksonville is seeing the fruits of its opposition to an anti-discrimination ordinance that would have granted protections to LGBT workers. A recent letter to the Florida Times-Union explains why a “multimillion-dollar company” decided not to move its business to the city because of the anti-gay climate. “Jacksonville lost this company because of the results of the anti-discrimination bill vote … When religious beliefs and convictions are infused into the responsibility of creating public policy, the resulting sad consequences are totally predictable,” wrote Marianna S. Smith, who identifies herself as an attorney in the letter. According to Equality Florida, Ordinance 2012-296 was amended with a substitute bill that removed the gender identity and expression provisions but left in the “sexual orientation language.” That bill was

Here’s Smith’s full letter to the Florida Times-Union: To build a business, you need more than just land; you need a favorable environment for employees. Let me tell you a story. I am a member of the board of directors of a rapidly growing, multi-million dollar international company. We employ chemists and engineers, marketers/ sales staff plus a full manufacturing and distribution facility. The company is located in a landlocked city and wishes to move to a city with a port, rail and truck service. I have strongly advocated Jacksonville as our future business home. Unfortunately, the CEO came to evaluate Jacksonville when the letters and comments of hate were in our paper opposing the proposed changes to the Jacksonville anti-discrimination ordinance. The CEO was shocked and said any determination about Jacksonville would not occur until after the bill was voted on by the City Council. I sent articles from city leaders supporting the bill, but that was not enough. The CEO has determined this

defeated by a vote of 10-9 back in August. Then the original bill was overwhelmingly rejected by a stunning vote of 17-2. If passed, the measure would have allowed to sue for money damages if LGBT people felt they were being treated unfairly in workplace, housing and or public accommodations. At the time, Equality Florida blamed the Florida Family Policy Council for lobbying to get the bill killed. FFPC “marshalled tens of thousands of emails and phone calls to the Councilmen offices. The FFPC also launched radio ads, automated calls, and media interviews, created coalitions and organized church leaders to education and influence the City Council,” the group wrote in a press release. Smith wrote the company will move its business to Savannah, Charleston and the ports in Virginia.

community will not be a good a fit for our company. Jacksonville lost this company because of the results of the anti-discrimination bill vote. I have served as a director on other international boards, and I can promise you that those companies would also decline Jacksonville as a headquarters home in view of the way our council and some citizens responded to a call for equal rights. This is not the result of unforeseen consequences. No, this result is highly foreseeable. When religious beliefs and convictions are infused into the responsibility of creating public policy, the resulting sad consequences are totally predictable. Where was strong, wise and meaningful leadership when we needed it? If I ever questioned the wisdom of separation of church and state, that doubt has been completely erased by this event. I am saddened to have my home city of Jacksonville defined in this manner. My company is now investigating Savannah, Charleston and the ports in Virginia. Marianna S. Smith, attorney, Jacksonville

When we say you’ll be able to taste, drink and even touch everything chocolate, we mean it,” she said. At the ChocoLand Chocolate Museum, event-goers will discover the rich history of chocolate: understand where and how the cacao bean actually grows, learn some chocology and uncover the steps and scientific process of turning a cacao bean into a chocolate bar. There will be demonstrations by worldclass pastry chefs who will be doing everything chocolate, from creating the perfect truffle to learning the history, technique and then getting a taste of the French macaroon. Some waved rainbow flags, others held signs and yelled, “We’re queer with no fear.” It was 11:30 a.m. when the group started marching from the student union to the center of the Boca campus, where they set up tables with free food, music, condom key chains, dental dams, lubricant, equality stickers, and, of course, rubber ducks and beads. “This is our history. Let’s celebrate it,” Perez said.

Hundreds of students flowed in and out of the “mini pridefest,” as Dani Guevara, Lambda’s president and a psychology major at FAU described it on the group’s facebook page. Emily Calfo — the university’s LGBTQA Resource Center specialist — helped organize this year’s pridefest. “I got all the vendors here,” Calfo said. “It’s been amazing.” This was the second annual history month kickoff, but last year’s lacked the music, food and dancing. “We had a kickoff, but it was different,” Calfo said. “We’re trying to have a tradition of starting a pridefest every year.” Last year, students and administrators spoke about the university’s antidiscrimination policy, which didn’t protect gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders back then. Now transgenders are the only group still unprotected.

“There’s a lot of work we need to do,” Guevara said. And Bri Sgro, English major and the founder of FAU’s newest women’s club — Women Organizing Women — agrees. “It makes me feel a little ashamed,” Sgro, 20, said. “We always boast about how diverse we are, but we’ve still got a long way to go here at FAU.” Sgro is referring to the university’s ranking as the 27th most diverse campus in the nation, according to this year’s U.S. News and World Report. Meanwhile in the center of the plaza where the kickoff was held, Rene Perez danced for over an hour before Dani Guevara joined in for a few minutes. “Homophobia, we step on it,” Perez said. “That’s how we do it here.” “We’re going to keep fighting until we get it,” Guevara said.

Betty James - After Three Husbands She Figured it Out By Donald Cavanaugh

“B

e sure to tell the folk that read your paper that the church (MCC of the Palm Beaches) has more love and generosity than any place else I know,” said 85-year old Betty James at the end of her interview. “They visit me and help me when I need it. They’re really my family.” Betty James knows family. The oldest of seven children of tobacco farming sharecroppers in Horry [pronounced Orr ee] County, SC, James married at 16 “to get out of that place as fast and far as I could.” But she never lost touch with her parents and over the years she worked to help her siblings get out of Horry, too. “Mostly I was close to my mother,” she said. “Daddy had issues with alcohol and could be really mean sometimes, but my

That was also when she came out to her siblings. “I was 55 years old,” she said. My father was dead so he never knew and my family kept it from my mother so she never knew, either.” When the Crane’s Nest lost its lease she opened Adam’s Attic on Dixie Avenue in West Palm Beach. Operating both bars gave her insight into the dark under belly of gay life with all the kids who’d come to the door seeking a hand out or other assistance. “There were lots of kids on the streets. It was sad,” she said. “We also did a lot of fund raising when AIDS hit us. We worked a lot with CAP which was just down the street.” She then closed the Attic and semi retired, taking up flea market sales. She bought her home in the tiny town of Cloud Lake where she settled in as an open lesbian. The town is located just west of I-95 on Southern Blvd. It’s only .1 square miles, and with only 135 residents it’s Palm Beach County’s smallest municipality. Opinion

‘Many Gays Will Vote for Republican Mitt Romney’ voter bloc. Despite Obama’s historical 2008 election as the first African-American President, one-out-of-three Gays voted for John McCain, according to the venerable New York Times post-campaign analysis. The same proportion of Gays voted Tea Party/ Republican in the 2010 mid-term elections that helped the GOP win the most-ever House seats in the history of mid-term elections. Consequently, Gay Republicans are likely to flex their growing political muscles in 2012, and possibly approach 40 percent of Gay American ballots cast for Mitt Romney in the Presidential race. This should be of no surprise to astute electoral demographic observers who study exit polling. After all, many Gays were loyal Republicans during the Nixon, Reagan, George H. W. Bush Administrations, and the Gingrich Congress when slightly over 40 percent voted with the GOP -- a stunning rebuke by unservile Gay Republican voters to the Gay Media and leftist Ruling Class dominated by Far Left editorial and news reporting; and such supposedly revered groups as the Human Rights Committee, Gay Victory Fund and ACT-UP -- who assume complete thought control and hegemony of everyone in LGBT America. The reason for such independence among a large segment of Gay Republican voters is simply that they identify strongly with the pro-capitalist, small business-oriented, and investment advocating GOP. Fiscal conservatism and discomfort with the excesses of the Welfare State and the national scandal of government waste, fraud and abuse also cause many Gays to find a hospitable partisan home among Republicans. Few people in a GOP established in any metropolitan area -- among them Broward and Dade Counties, Rush Limbaugh and GOP guru Karl Rove -- completely oppose Gay people in their ranks. And most genuinely support some compromising

form of Gay marriage, i.e. Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships; job protections, hospital visitation rights, and anti-bullying attitudes. With our current bleak economic condition causing $5 trillion in massive foreign borrowing by President Obama, the lowest number of Americans participating in the American work force and a record number of women plunged into poverty, it is difficult for many Gays to view themselves or their fellow citizens as better off than four years ago when a charismatic “Savior” was elected. And despite the glorification of the Obama coalition -- Blacks and young

to Investors Business Daily. And many Americans will see their 2013 post-election income tax rate go up 30-50 percent, which means a person previously at the 10 percent rate will see their income tax rate rise to 15 percent; taxpayers at the the 20 percent rate will inherit a rise as high as the 30 percent rate -- unless President Romney and a GOP Congress can dismantle the most destructive elements of Obamacare. None of this should be a shock to Gay sensibilities. After all, US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts joined a 5-4 liberal majority decision that validated Obamacare as “a tax” -- albeit, the Harry Reid/Princess Nancy Pelosi Congress strenuously denied such GOP assertions. Obama’s “Affordable Health Care” was all a stupendous and fraudulent prevarication by the Obama Democrats. The realistic outcome of Obamacare flies in the face of the strutting 2008 Presidential candidate who relentlessly promised that he would never raise taxes “one-dime” on people making less than $250,000; and later as President, Mr. Obama said that “Obamacare” would “not cost taxpayers one

people -- that set in motion a parting of the ocean toward the path of “Hope and Change” -- both of these groups have unemployment rates double the national average; most college students experience what home mortgage owners suffer -- massive loan debts with no job opportunities to pay them off, similar to “upside down mortgage balances. Furthermore, despite Mr. Obama’s most heralded accomplishment: “Obamacare” -health care premiums have risen $3,065.00 per American; yet Obama vowed that they would drop $2,500.00, according

cent”. One can still hear the pulsating echo of reflexive Gay Democratic activists wildly and thoughtlessly cheering Obama’s “cool” but deceitful salesmanship, but “cool” has its limits some Gays determine. And there is another terrific 2013 postelection surprise from Obamacare that will certainly disturb most Gay soldiers and veterans. In 2013, all active duty military members and dependents, along with all military retirees, will see their co-pays, deductibles, and premiums for surgeries, drugs and appointments go up 40-300 percent, while the civilian federal work

force and retirees are totally exempt from one penny of increase. “Surprise, Surprise !!!” as Gomer Pyle used to say: the sexual orientation of a Gay soldier or veteran does not exempt one from this financial reaming. Bend over, Troops !!! What a wonderful way to reward the young combat men and women who spent the last 10 years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not all Gay voters are pleased with this situation. In November, Gay voters are going to split into two camps that will determine which party they will vote for -- an economic rationale that compels Gays to vote Republican, and an emotional rationale that compels a majority of Gays to vote Democrat. In all likelihood, at least 60 percent of Gays will vote for Mr. Obama, yet a large minority will reject the empty promises of Big Government and the seduction of class warfare. The Gay Right minority will vote for more “Fat Cats” to exist. Ostensibly, because they know that the rich can only buy so many homes, cars and steak dinners. The Gay Right knows what the 99 percent don’t realize, that they are better off with more fat cats, not less. David Koch, of the infamous right-wing Koch Brothers who fund the Tea Party, gave $100 million for cancer research at MIT. Bill Gates, joined George W. Bush’s historical efforts, and gave $28 billion to fight AIDS and save nearly 6 million lives in Africa. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg g,ave $100 million to revitalize public education in New Jersey. The Gay Republican young man who created the PayPal credit card, also gives enormous sums to charity. And of course, Mitt Romney gave one-third of his 2011 income, or $4 million to charity -- despite accusations that he only cares about rich people. Wherever we look, Gay Republicans witness, the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, or any college, you’ll see libraries, dormitories, faculty and buildings that are a result of the generosity of fat cats. Simply put, we will not have a revitalized, robust, and prospering middle class without the indispensablepresence of job-creating rich people. Such perspicacity is growing the Gay Republican vote for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and will likely cancel out at least half the Gay votes for Mr. Obama. Matthew Veritas Tsien is the former national director of ex-President Reagan’s lobbying organization, and a member of the Broward Republican Executive Committee.

Sometimes the best place to hide is in plain sight. Parsing Obama is a hazardous task. He is known for taking the big picture view, seeing much more of a situation than others do. Neither this debate, nor the others, will determine who wins the election; debate outcome rarely has any direct affect on the election. Perhaps his big picture here is to help Romney look better to Republicans who will spend more on him and leave the Democrats to focus resources on congressional seats. Then it didn’t really matter to me that Romney was apparently coached to be aggressive and did that regularly by interrupting the President midsentence and speaking over the moderator. Neither are characteristics of one who is familiar with negotiating and getting along. Romney was simply taking advantage of the format and weak moderator. Along with his aggressive style he continued the regular flow of myth and falsehood. Too bad I wasn’t counting. I tried hard to take a pearl of policy from

he general consensus seems to be that Gov. Romney outperformed President Obama with his readiness and ability to challenge Obama’s policies and results. But Romney accomplished this by repeatedly deceiving. He spoke for 38 minutes and told a litany of untruths. Watching the first Presidential Debate on a split screen I started to cringe early on with Romney’s frozen smirk appearing to look at the President all the while he spoke. Not long after I found myself listening closely to the President and becoming disconcerted with Obama’s overall performance, particularly the seeming limitation of his grasp of the details he was trying to communicate. Perhaps he was not on his best game. This is not the President we all know, and he started out so nicely wishing Michelle a happy anniversary. Then the bell went off for me. He was laying back. Obama wasn’t even trying. Even though he was not a star in prior debates, he is the President today.

Romney, yet there was none to grasp. He simply will not say in definitive terms what he will do once elected past repealing Obamacare and Wall Street regulations; neither of which he can actually do as a practical matter. He is clear on his policy toward the LGBT community though that didn’t come up; as a practical matter there is much he as president can do to make gay lives miserable. Regardless of what other policies Romney would or would not implement he can not be president of all the people. He said so and Obama didn’t bring that up. Always keep some powder dry. Every good performance needs some comic relief and Romney delivered when he fired Jim Lehrer, and the Muppets; after his spiel on education I couldn’t help wonder if perhaps he doesn’t realize that PBS is educational TV. Romney is a master at telling others how they don’t fit into the plans he won’t divulge. I can’t help but smile at the response of the typical Republican press, ecstatic and apparently completely unaware of a bigger picture about to fall on their heads. Don’t forget Obama’s basketball game; he is known to goof off in the beginning and press hard in the end. Remember what he did to Hillary in 2008. Obama looked and sounded like he was holding back - like a Ferrari in a school zone with a hockey mom on its tail. At the End School Zone sign, bye bye.

Off The Wall — Rebuttal

Veteran Speaks Up By Bruce Bant Last week I decided to republish an article from 2010 supporting President Obama as my ‘Off the Wall’ column. I received the below letter in response. And to be fair I wanted to give the other side a chance to voice their opinion. – Piero Angelo

I

read last week’s “Off The Wall” article with some interest and great amazement. I cannot remember a newspaper article with such hatred and bigotry. The author obviously hates everyone who doesn’t toe the line and agree with him. Disagreement isn’t necessarily a sign of “uneducated reactionary white rubes” and “evangelical gay hating flakes.” If he really believes that who, I ask, is the uneducated reactionary and the hater? I was also amazed that SFGN republished this article. Readers should keep in mind that the original piece was written in 2010 when the President and the House and the Senate were in all in Democrat hands. The article states that the right wing haters would join together to do everything they could do to stop “an uppity black man from succeeding.” Who but a left wing dunderhead would use the phrase “uppity black man.” In case everyone forgot President Obama won with 365 electoral votes and more than 69 million popular votes. There aren’t enough blacks, Hispanics and gays to get to that point. There had to be an awful lot of whitey votes involved. The article also pointed out that the country was ideologically divided into two countries. I agree with that, but I don’t hate all of folks who I didn’t agree with and I don’t hate any of them because of their political views. No one since Abraham Lincoln has done more to divide this countrythen the current president. He has pitted blacks against whites and rich against the poor. He created and promotes a group called African Americans for Obama. Explain to me how this pulls this nation together as one. Suppose Romney created a group called Caucasians for Romney. There’d be hell to pay! Obama did unite us in one way though, he proved that a black president can be every bit as inept, dishonest and dangerous as a white president. President Obama inherited the worse economic crisis since the depression. Yes

he did...and he made it worse. There was no end to the criticism of President Bush’s deficits. President Obama tripled them. No one criticizes because it wasn’t his fault. He didn’t know how bad things were. Of course he didn’t. I wouldn’t expect a neighborhood organizer to understand the workings of a national economy. As a senator, Mr. Obama stated the Bush’s deficits were unpatriotic. Based on his record over the past three years his deficits are down right treasonous! He inherited a country that water boarded terrorist prisoners. Yes he did. So he put an end to it. Now they take no prisoners, they just blow the terrorist heads off. I think if you ask any civilized person which is the most inhumane I’m betting they’d chose water boarding. The article claimed that the health in the United States is a disgrace. I disagree. But that’s one man’s opinion. Now we’re getting Obamacare. I can’t argue for or against it. Both sides make so many claims and counterclaims it’s hard to tell who, if anyone is telling the truth. We do know though that nobody is totally sure what’s in, what it’ll cost, or what it will do to the country’s health care. Conveniently it doesn’t go into effect until 2014. He did continue draw down the “misbegotten” war in Iraq and he did so on the exact schedule established by the Bush administration. In congress he voted against “the surge” that Bush requested he said it was “unwanted and unwise.” When he and his regimes took office they requested and got a “surge” for Afghanistan in almost the exact scheme requested by Bush in Iraq. In his campaign he became the first candidate to visit 57 states. He said one of the first things he would do was to close Guantanamo. One of the first things he did was to end a program that allowed poor black students to escape D.C. schools (among the most costly and least effective public school districts in the world) and attend the same school his daughters attend. He really isn’t the education president, he’s the teachers union president. He sad he wouldn’t hire lobbyist. Within a month he had 18 on staff. He said if he couldn’t improve the economy in three years he would be a one-term president. I think he got that one right! In the article it stated he restored America’s image around the world. It’s a good thing that piece wasn’t written last month. He took credit for killing Bin Laden.

October 10, 2012 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

It’s true that his regime was in power when Bin Laden was killed (not water boarded) and he gave the go ahead. The search had been going on for 10 years. That’s like giving Richard Nixon credit for putting a man on the moon. It happened while he was president and he gave the go ahead. And there was “Fast and Furious.” That was a plan where the Justice Department provided Mexican drug dealers with a supply of lethal weapons to track where they ended up. Well at least one ended up killing a federal agent. Congress investigated and was told that the president and attorney general knew nothing of the plan. Congress requested more information and the administration stone walled them. When the congress threatened contempt of congress the president evoked Executive Privilege. The question is if the president and the attorney general never knew or spoke of “Fast and Furious,” how does executive privilege apply? Just asking. Let’s just talk about the past year it was very eventful. During the Bush years we were told that it was Bush and Cheney who were responsable for the rise in gas prices. Gasoline price have more than doubled during the Obama regime and now were told the president has no control over gas prices For three and a half years the president opposed gay marriage. In April, the middle of an election year, he decided gay marriage was okay. If a Republican had done the same he would be accused of flip-flopping. In any case the president’s approval and $5 will get you a nice cup of coffee at Starbucks. Marriage is a state issue, not a federal issue. Four months before the elections he finally approved an arms deal with Israel. At the same time refused to meet with the Israeli prime minister. In a carefully worded press release the president said there was never a request for a meeting in Washington. That was correct. The request was for a meeting in New York at the United Nations. Two years ago he said he was unable to do anything on the “Dream Act” until the congress acted. Five months before the election he went ahead with the Dream Act provisions without the congress’s approval. Dangerous! The regime requested funds to buy a newly completed, vacant prison in Illinois. The congress denied the request. On October 2nd, the Justice Department bought said prison for $165 million ignoring congressional concerns. Dangerous! The man is dangerous. Recently he signed into law a bill that allows U.S. citizens to be arrested and held indefinitely without the knowledge of family, friends or the benefit of an attorney. Dangerous! Last month some of our “Arab Spring “ friends in the Middle East had a field day attacking our embassies. In Libya, where we were instrumental in toppling the previous government, it was extremely bad. The

consulate in Benghazi was burned and four Americans, including the ambassador were killed. Within hours everyone in the intelligence community knew it was a terrorist attack. Obama and his lackeys for almost two weeks denied it. I ask you, was it ineptitude or dishonesty? He has no respect for congress and very little respect for the constitution. He made recess appointments when there’s no congressional recess. His friend Harry Read, Senate Majority Leader and a Mormon lets him get away with it setting a terrible precedence. He doesn’t like the constitution because in general it tells government what it can’t do. Dangerous! I saved the best for last. For most of President Obama’s the unemployment rate has been over 8 percent. Miraculously, a month before the election the rate dips to 7.8 percent. This happened in spite of the fact the that we only added 114,000 new jobs. It truly is a miracle...or is it as my Jewish friends would say “Chutzpah!” Bruce Bant is a retired Army Sergeant Major with 22 years of service, including nearly four years in Vietnam. His final assignment before leaving the Army in 1980 was with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, The Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service medal, three Joint Service Commendation medals, and four Army Commendation Medals.

LGBT Visitor Center Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary By Karen Brown

T

he LGBT Visitor Center (Sponsored by MetLife) located at 1130 Washington Avenue is proud to be celebrating its 2nd Year Anniversary this month. The Visitor Center has grown to become the epicenter for the LGBT community serving visitors and locals alike. Many community organizations have used the facility for meetings, training and receptions including: The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Aqua Foundation, Miami Beach Pride, The Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, YES Institute and many others. Most recently the Miami Center for International Visitors utilized our space for LGBT Human Rights activist panels bringing in representatives from 9 countries in Latin America. The tours and attractions section has expanded and offers

all kinds of entertaining activities to do while in town and the Center also welcomed a new art installation as part of “Art at the Center”, featuring Latino LGBT Artists with mixed media pieces. A portion of sale proceeds will go to support the Visitor Center. In just 2 years, the Center has gone from a venue geared toward tourists to an inclusive community type hub serving a wide variety of consumers and interests. During this period the LGBT VC got its very own website, www.GoGayMiami.com that also includes a community events calendar to help those planning trips to our area as well as a go to spot for locals. All non profits are encouraged to contact the center so that they can contribute to this active calendar resource for events.

The Office Depot Foundation, Best Buy and the MDGLCC completed its strategic partnership with the Office Depot Foundation’s successful “Sack Packs for Kids” program. The LGBT Visitor Center became an assembly line operation filling up the sack packs with valuable supplies for needy kids. The completed sack packs are currently being presented to Miami-Dade Public Schools. There is so much history already packed in the first 2 years of existence but we see so much potential for growth, so it is with great excitement that we announce the 2012/2013 Annual Giving Program for the LGBT Visitor Center (Sponsored by MetLife). What started out as the vision of a few people has now become a destination for tens of thousands of individuals in Miami.

The LGBT Visitor Center will launch its campaign in October in an effort to further strengthen and solidify the programs and offerings of this unique and special place. Your contribution in support of the LGBT Visitor/Community Center through the MDGLCC Foundation will be tax deductable to the full extent of the law. Any contribution received will help to ensure this safe space continues to act as a resource for the many incredible organizations that we work with. For more information on the above mentioned initiatives, on the LGBT Visitor Center activities and programs or to become a donor member of the MDGLCC please contact us at 305-397-8914, karen@ gogaymiami.com or www.gogaymiami.com

commitment ceremonies. In 2010, Hawaii became the seventh U.S. state to legalize civil unions. The amazing coastline is one of the main reasons to visit Maui and Little Beach is the most popular gay beach on the island. You’ll find this nude beach in Makena State Park, South of Wailea at the end of Wailea Alanui Road. You’ll have to walk past the Big Beach and over the lava-flow trail to get there. It’s a great place to meet and greet the local gay set and gay tourists from all points. After a day of fun in the sun, you’ll want to experience the local gay nightlife. Don’t expect to a wide variety of dance clubs and other gay venues like you’d find in Honolulu, but you’ll definitely have a great time. One of the most popular bars for gays and lesbians on the island is Ambrosia. Named by Maui Time Weekly as best bar (two years in a row), Ambrosia offers daily entertainment and eclectic décor. If you want to try some exotic local drinks, you’ll fall in love with Ambrosia. Their wide varieties of specialty martinis are extremely popular and are the perfect way to cap off an adventurepacked day. There are also great drink specials and a happy hour every night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Betty’s Beach Café is also a great place to eat, drink and be Mary! Their Sunday brunch is out of this world, featuring amazing omelets, egg scrambles and signature cocktails. No trip to this tropical venue would be complete without trying one of their “Betty” drinks. From the Bettie Paige (red wine, peach schnapps and pineapple) to the Betty Rubble (a Blue-beri Hawaiian), there’s truly a vice for everyone. Happy hour is always a blast at Betty’s. or the queer couple seeking a romantic haven, the island of Maui is waiting to welcome you with bright rainbow leis. From snorkeling to whale watching and lounging on a remote gay beach, Maui is paradise found. With a population of less than 150,000 people, the gay scene is much smaller on Maui than in Oahu but there’s a small, tight knit LGBT community and a lot of great activities geared toward the gay tourist. Whether you want to surf, canoe or kayak, opportunities abound on gay Maui for the outdoor enthusiast. There are several companies that offer visitors equipment and training. Now there were no jokes in the Baltimore locker room. “A bunch of my teammates were men about it, and they had real, honest conversations with me,” Ayanbadejo said. “That had never happened before.” Kluwe received over 6,000 votes of support on his Twitter account and was interviewed Photo Courtesy of Keith Allison

Did you seriously just say that, as someone who’s ‘deeply involved in government task forces on the legacy of slavery in Maryland’? Have you not heard of Kenny Washington? Jackie Robinson? As recently as 1962 the NFL still had segregation, which was only done away with by brave athletes and coaches daring to speak their mind and do the right thing, and you’re going to say that political views have ‘no place in a sport?’ I can’t even begin to fathom the mental gymnastics your brain has to tortuously contort itself through to make such a preposterous statement are surely worthy of an Olympic gold medal (the Russian judge gives you a 10 for ‘beautiful oppressionism’). And finally Kluwe targets the real issue behind Burns’ letter: “How does gay marriage, in any way shape or form, affect your life? If gay marriage becomes legal, are you worried that all of a sudden you’ll start thinking about penis? ‘Oh shit. Gay marriage just passed. Gotta get me some of that hot dong action!’… I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won’t even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights… You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?” In closing: “I hope this letter, in some small way, causes you to reflect upon the magnitude of the colossal foot in mouth clusterfuck you so brazenly unleashed on a man whose only crime was speaking out for something he believed in. Best of luck in the next election; I’m fairly certain you might need it.” “P.S. I’ve also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your ‘I

In addition he will join in an educational outreach program to promote tolerance based on sexual orientation. Also Kevin McClatchy who, at the age of 33 in 1996 became the youngest owner of a major league baseball team (the Pittsburgh Pirates), came out of the closet. From 1996 to 2007, as the Pirate’s CEO, he was the public face of the team. However, in 2007, he stepped back and just a few weeks ago gave a tell-all interview to the New York Times. “I’m sure people will criticize me because I came out later, and I should have come out while I was in baseball and in the thick of it.” But, he continued, “there’s no way I want to go into the rest of my existence and ever have to hide my personal life again.” It seems that the hard homophobic, heterosexist shell of professional sports has cracked. Now we wait and see what (and who) comes out. I think I’ll start watching Monday Night Football again. ean Paul Gaultier is a world-renowned French fashion designer best known for his avant-garde and haute couture designs. He redefined traditional Parisian elegance. Gaultier grew up in Arcueil, France. “I was a lonely child,” he says. “One day I decided my teddy looked forlorn and ugly so I made him a corset.” At 13, he designed a collection for his mother and grandmother. As a teen, Gaultier sent sketches to Paris designer Pierre Cardin and was hired as his design assistant. Gaultier worked for many French design houses, including the House of Patou. After his designs were published in Mode Internationale, Gaultier started his own company and became the second designer in three decades to create couture under his own label. In his late 20’s, he became famous for his fusion of classic fashion and unconventional elements. He earned the name “enfant terrible” for his provocative designs. After noticing that couture designers hid female curves, Gaultier reinvented the corset as an outerwear piece presenting breasts as an object of feminine power. On her Blonde Ambition tour, Madonna exclusively wore Gaultier designs, including the iconic torpedo bra. In the 1980’s, Gaultier broke fashion stereotypes by featuring transgender, pierced and tattooed models. “There are different kinds of beauty,” he said, “and I always try to show that.” He challenged traditional gender roles by creating skirts, corsets and tutus for men. For one controversial show, female models smoked pipes while men wore transparent lace skirts. He worked as creative director for Hermès and designed costumes for films such as “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover” (1989), “Kika” (1993) and “The Fifth Element” (1997). In 1995, Gaultier received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Stockholm Film Festival. In 1987, Gaultier won the French Designer of the Year award and earned the title of Chevalier, one of France’s highest honors. In 2011, he received the Globe de Cristal for Best Fashion Designer.

arlene Dietrich was a movie star and cabaret singer who appeared in dozens of films during Hollywood’s Golden Age. She was one of the highest paid actresses of her time. Born Marie Magdalene Dietrich in Berlin, Germany, she was the younger of two daughters in a well-to-do family. In her mid-teens, Dietrich studied acting. In the early 1920’s, she began her career in cinema and met her future husband Rudolf Sieber. Dietrich remained married to Sieber for more than 50 years. During the marriage she had a series of affairs with famous men and women. Her breakout role was as sultry cabaret singer Lola Lola in the German film “The Blue Angel” (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg. Dietrich and von Sternberg moved to Hollywood, where he directed her in six films. For their first collaboration, “Morocco” (1930), Dietrich earned an Oscar nomination. She played a singer dressed in a man’s tuxedo and top hat who kisses a female audience member on the lips. Among Dietrich’s most memorable films are “Desire” (1936), co-starring Gary Copper; “Destry Rides Again” (1939), which showcased her comedic talent; “Witness for the Prosecution (1957), her top box office hit; and “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), her final motion picture. Dietrich became an American citizen in 1937 and performed for Allied troops during World War II. In 1947, she was awarded the U.S. Medal of Freedom, which she called her proudest accomplishment. As her film career waned, she found success for nearly 20 years as a cabaret singer. Collaborating with musical arranger Burt Bacharach, Dietrich turned her nightclub act into a theatrical onewoman show. Dietrich and Bacharach recorded four albums and several singles. In 1967, she performed her show on Broadway and received a Special Tony Award. In 1975, after a series of onstage falls and injuries, Dietrich retired from show business. She spent the final decade of her life in Paris, secluded and bedridden.

odie Foster is a celebrated actor, director and producer. She has received two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Foster was born in Los Angeles, the youngest child of a film producer and an Air Force officer. Her parents divorced before she was born. Foster’s career began at age 3 in a Coppertone commercial. As a child, she appeared in dozens of commercials and television series, including as a co-star in “Paper Moon.” Her breakout role was as a teenage prostitute in “Taxi Driver” (1976), for which she received an Academy Award nomination. In 1980, Foster enrolled at Yale University. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in literature. While at Yale, she was stalked by John Hinckley, an obsessed fan who shot President Reagan and said he did so to impress her. Foster won her first Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her role in “The Accused” (1988). She earned her second Oscar and another Golden Globe Award for “Silence of the Lambs” (1991), her first blockbuster film. That same year, she made her directorial debut with “Little Man Tate,” in which she co-starred. In 1995, she directed “Home for the Holidays.” Foster has appeared in more than 40 films, including “Maverick” (1994), “Nell” (1994), “Contact” (1997), “The Panic Room” (2002), “Inside Man” (2006) and “The Brave One” (2007). In 2007, while accepting an award at a Hollywood Reporter “Women in Entertainment” event, she acknowledged her then long-term partner, producer Cydney Bernard, with the words, “to my beautiful Cydney, who sticks with me through the rotten and the bliss.” That same year, Foster gave The Trevor Project its largest donation. Foster lives in Beverly Hills with her two sons.

T

he critical success of the Showtime television series “The Borgias” has renewed interest in the men who historian E. R. Chamberlin called “the bad popes.” Of course not all the popes were bad. There have been 265 popes - from St. Peter to Benedict XVI - and they include good popes, bad popes and mediocre popes. But the bad popes are often more interesting. One of them, who was so notorious that he merited his own entry (by historian Louis Crompton) in glbtq.com, was Pope Julius III (ruled 1550-1555). Famous as “a skilled expert in canon law” and a patron of the arts, Julius also “created one of the most notorious homosexual scandals in the history of the papacy.” While still Cardinal Giovanni Maria del Monte the pontiff fell in love with a 15-year old named Innocenzo. Two years later del Monte, now Pope, made Innocenzo a cardinal and his “chief

By Jesse Monteagudo diplomatic and political agent.” Though Church scholars insist that Julius’ interest in Innocenzo was strictly platonic, Crompton quotes the Venetian ambassador to the Holy See, who reported that the young Ganymede “shared the pope’ bedroom and bed.” Not surprisingly, Cardinal Innocenzo’s glory days ended when his papal partner died in 1555. Innocenzo himself died in 1577. Recent studies suggest that a large percentage of Roman Catholic priests are homosexual. If this is so, it stands to reason that a relatively large number of popes, most of who were priests, were also gay. According to Wayne R. Dynes, who wrote about the “Papacy,” in his Encyclopedia of Homosexuality, “given the custom of monastic sex-segregation and the extension of celibacy to the priesthood in the Western church beginning in the eleventh century, it is not surprising that a number of Roman pontiffs should have been involved in homoerotic sentiments and behavior.” Noel I. Garde, in his gossipy 1964 book Jonathan to Gide: The Homosexual In History, included John XII (955-964), Benedict IX (1033-1045; 1047-1048), John XXII (13161334), Paul II (1464-1471), Sixtus IV (14711484), Julius II (1503-1513) and Leo X (15131521), along with Julius III, in his list of “gay popes.” Garde and his book must be taken with a rock of salt, for he also included in his list Alexander VI (1492-1503), the Borgia Pope, who was portrayed in history (and on television) as very heterosexual. Even so, Garde’s list leads us to conclude that some of the popes ignored the Church’s rule against homosexuality to the extent that they practiced it themselves. John XII according to Dynes, “modeled himself on the scandalous Roman emperor Heliogabalus, holding homosexual orgies in the papal palace.” But the bisexual John also liked women, which allowed Lynne Yamaguchi Fletcher, in The First Gay Pope and Other Records, to rightly call Benedict IX “the first pope known to be primarily homosexual,” if only for having “turned the Vatican into a male brothel.” The Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries featured a set of intelligent, sophisticated and corrupt popes who did not let their spiritual duties get in the way of having a good time. When Pietro Barbo, who was

Julius disported with Ganymedes ‘without shame.’” In modern times Pope John XXIII (Angelo Roncalli; 1958-1963) and Pope Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Montini; 1963-1978) were suspected of being gay. Winston Leyland, in Gay Sunshine Interviews Vol. 2, attributed these popes’ relative tolerance of homosexuality to their own sexual orientation; though it could be argued that the Italian Church has traditionally been more tolerant of “sins of the flesh” than the Polish or German or Irish-American Churches. Paul VI was outed by the gay French writer Roger Peyrefitte, in a 1976 interview he did in response to that pope’s antigay edicts. According to Peyrefitte, who knew his way around aristocratic circles in France and Italy, Paul VI led an active gay life while he was still Archbishop of Milan. Recalling the incident in a Gay Sunshine interview, Peyrefitte recalled that Montini “had a relationship with a young movie actor” named Paul, whose name Montini took when he became pope. The future pope also visited “a discreet house” where he and other pope julias iii Milanese notables see more photos at sfgn.com/photos would “meet boys.” Peyrefitte’s Rovere family were accused of sodomy revelations caused a sensation, and a sharp by their political and religious enemies. rebuttal from the Vatican. Film reveals the not-so-pretty-side of gay relationships By J.W. Arnold

N

ot long ago, realistic portrayals of LGBT relationships were rarely seen on the small screen, let alone in feature films. Gay film festivals were flooded with poignant, if saccharine, coming out tales from budding film students who had nothing to lose and the airwaves filled with flamboyant stereotypes. But, in the years since Will & Grace, To Wong Foo and The Birdcage, public acceptance has created openings for gay and mainstream filmmakers to explore the nuanced facets of these relationships. Who’s Dishing? By J.W. Arnold

U

nlike many newlyweds, comedian Mario Cantone isn’t afraid to kiss and tell… And sing, too. The joys of marriage — Cantone wed his longtime partner, Broadway musical director Jerry Dixon, last year — are just one of the topics the Sex and the City alum will tackle at Hard Rock Live on Thursday, Oct. 11. “Technically, we’re married, but we’ve been together 20 years,” Cantone explains. “Actually, I think (a marriage certificate) has given us separation anxiety. Does it feel different, yeah it does, it’s nice.” But will Cantone and Dixon take the next step and adopt children like so many other gay couples? “Emphatically, NO. You can type that in big capital letters,” he howls. “I talk about that in the show,” along with the latest developments in his career, reality television, pop culture, his family and life in general.

36

Oh, and he also is debuting a new opening number, another trademark “Liza” (Minnelli) song and plenty of musical numbers penned by Dixon, his “in-house composer.” The show received rave reviews in Montreal, and Cantone is betting it will be a hit with American audiences, too. “I really try to mix it up with twists on standards and lots of surprises. I can’t wait to get on stage. It’s the waiting before the show, like right now, that makes me nuts,” he explains. “AA — anxiety and anger — that’s what fuels the comedian. I definitely have to work to relax.” Don’t mistake Cantone for a workaholic, either. Eight years have passed since his last one-man show. (He last appeared in South Florida in 2005.) “I like my down time,” he says. “I’m basically lazy,” before discussing some of the projects that nearly came together, including a scrapped series set for NBC that would have paired him with former Miami

Vice star Don Johnson. While Cantone isn’t normally considered a “political” comedian, he can be outspoken, leading a fellow political comedian, Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, to call him “the white Sammy Davis, Jr.” Cantone fired back that Stewart was “the white Dean Martin.” As a young gay comedian in the 1980s, Cantone had an uphill battle, recalling nationally televised appearances that were cancelled because of his “sensibility.” But, he found the drive to succeed, as evidenced by his later successes. “My success really came from being me and crossing over to the straight audience,” he says. “For some reason gay men don’t come out to see me.” A recent benefit at the Castro Theatre in the heart of San Francisco’s gay community still drew a mixed crowd, but it was one of the greatest shows of his career. “I’m lucky that straight audiences love what I do, although it’s not that I don’t have

gay audiences. I get it, we (gays) like the women: Kathy, Judy, Madonna, Lady Gaga — well, I don’t love Lady Gaga, but they do.” For more information, go to www. HardRockLiveHollywood.com. Photo Courtesy of Paradigm Agency

The King and I at Lake Worth Playhouse By Jason Parsley

U

p their 60th season this past weekend with the historical romance The King and I. Overall the show was solid, which is what I’ve come to expect from the community theater. And that’s probably why they’ve been around for 60 seasons. The show, based on a true story, follows Anna Leonowens (Katie Angell Thomas) who becomes the English governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam (Bryan Wohlust) in the early 1860s. The King hires Anna to teach his children and wives English and British customs in order to modernize his country. The King and I first premiered on Broadway in 1951 and starred Yul Brynner as the king. In 1956 the story was adapted as a film musical and again starred Brynner. The story was also made into two non-musical films Anna and the King of Siam in 1946 and then again in 1999 as Anna and the King starring Jodie Foster.

Both Thomas and Wohlust were excellent as the lead roles. And because of the amount of children in the musical there were plenty of awwww moments. “It was fantastic,” said Jeff Wolmetz of Delray Beach. “My favorite parts were when probably when the kids were first coming out introducing themselves to Anna. That was an adorable scene. I also liked the scene where Anna and the King were dancing to Shall We Dance. That was excellent. But I liked the whole show.” Wolmetz continued: “The King was amazing. He sounded the same as Yul Brynner did in the movie. It was a great cast. There was a lot of humor in the show. And a lot of good songs.” The King and I runs through Oct. 21. Tickets are $26 to and $30. Visit LakeWorthPlayHouse. org for more information.
