Angela Lansbury: Women Turning Into Lesbians The 87-year-old British actress said men’s obsession with sex is affecting women British actress Angela Lansbury, best known for her role in the television show “Murder, She Wrote,” recently said in an interview that men have become so addicted to sex women are as a consequence turning into lesbians. “Women are now suffering for the lack of enough men to go around,” the 87-year-old told the
U.K.’s Daily Mail. “Many women have given up. In many cases I think women prefer to have a relationship with a woman.” According to Lansbury, men who want to get married are becoming a rarity; the problem? Most men today are obsessed with sex. “Unfortunately, what goes on in bed has come to be considered
all-important, but that really isn’t the most important thing in a relationship, ultimately,” she said. She added citing as reference her late husband actor Peter Shaw, whom she was married to for 54 year until his death in 2003: “It’s not the thing that’s going to support a marriage necessarily through 40 or 50 years.”

The polish leader’s anti-gay comments didn’t sit well with one politician Former Poland President Lech Walesa’s recent anti-gay comments have resonated with one San Francisco politician, who thinks the Polish leader’s name should be wiped off of the city’s streets. Supervisor Jane Kim said she’ll introduce legislation to change the name of Lech Walesa Street to honor a gay
icon; perhaps gay activist Tom Waddell, according to the Bay City News Service. Waddell was a physician and amateur athlete who founded the Gay Olympics. “I want to reach out and make sure [Waddell’s] the appropriate person, or if people want to see it just go back to the original name,” she said.
Walesa told a television reporter earlier this month that gays have no political leverage and should perhaps sit in the back of Parliament or even “behind a wall.” He added that because gays have little significance as a minority, they should “adjust to smaller things.”

The Europe Multiclub Sauna and Gym describes itself as ‘“the number one gay sauna in Italy.” Embracing the sanctity of those living in the upper levels, the gay

In late February, La Repubblica published a story saying Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation may have been prompted by the influence of the gay priests within the Vatican.

+Firehouse Masturbating Gay Porn Star Claims He ‘Got Off,’ Prosecutors Disagree Nicholas Gonzalez, also known as gay porn star Donny Wright, took to Twitter to claim he got off with just probation after he was charged with burglary, public intoxication and criminal mischief when he broke into a Louisville, Kentucky firehouse and masturbated on fire gear. SFGN contacted Julie Hardesty at
the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office. Hardesty said Gonzalez’s claims are a little off the mark. “What [Mr. Gonzalez] saw was a copy of his mugshot that we had at the plea negotiations to verify what injuries, if any, he sustained when he broke into the firehouse using his head,” Hardesty said. “He briefly
walked by the room we were in. The plea negotiation took place without him even being around.” Hardesty said Gonzalez walked by when his lawyer asked if prosecutors wanted to see that he was present. When he walked by, the prosecutor waved at him and nothing else according to Hardesty.
+ Former Gay Air Force Officer Settles DADT Lawsuit
Former Air Force Major Mike Almy had once been named one of the top officers in his career field, but that didn’t matter – Almy was discharged in 2006 under the now repealed “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” On Friday March 15, Almy was vindicated when he settled his discharge lawsuit with the Defense Department, according to OutServe. Almy’s settlement was the third and final case in Almy v. U.S. Department of Defense. The lawsuit, filed in 2010, challenged the constitutionality of three plaintiffs’ discharges under DADT and sought their reinstatement to active duty. Almy’s settlement did not include reinstatement. “The settlement we announce today is an excellent conclusion to this case,” said Army veteran and OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Allyson Robinson. “Mike will receive service credit and a cash payment, and will finally be able to move beyond his discharge under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell nearly eight years to the day after he was fired.” Resolutions had already been reached in the two other cases. In December 2011, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jase Daniels was reinstated in the U.S. Navy as a linguist. Then in April 2012, a resolution was reached on behalf of Staff Sergeant Tony Loverde, who was reinstated in the Air Force. In 2005 during a directed search of private emails, Almy’s messages to his thenboyfriend were discovered and forwarded to his commander. He was relieved of his duties, his security clearance was suspended, and

California Governor Jerry Brown said he supports banning any sort of ridiculous medicine. “This bill bans non-scientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,” Brown said. “These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.” SFGN called NARTH to see if the organization plans to re-file for the tax-exempt status. He went on active duty in 1993, just as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was signed into law by President Clinton. Almy had four deployments to the Middle East in his career, including his last deployment where he led a team of nearly 200 men and women to operate and maintain the systems used to control the air space over Iraq. soflagaynews //

DOMA Protest Goes National Christiana Lilly
Jarrod Scarbrough, left, with his daughter Alegra and partner Les Sewell at last year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. Photo courtesy of Jarrod Scarbrough,
They’ve been together for almost two decades, have a daughter of their own, but in the eyes of law, they’re just two men living together. Jarrod Scarbrough lives in Tampa with his partner and 8-year-old daughter, and as the Supreme Court decides what to do with the Defense of Marriage Act at the end of the month, he’s standing up for his family. Scarbrough is leading supporters of marriage equality to the U.S. Court House in downtown Tampa on March 26, where speakers will talk about equality and their own experiences with discrimination. Then, as the sun sets, people will take out glow sticks to create an aura of hope for everyone to see. “To secure our family through a civil contract of marriage is something that’s near and dear to us,” he said. And Scarbrough is not alone — more than 100 communities across the country in almost every state, including Florida, are joining forces through the Light the Way to Justice movement. As the Supreme Court holds its hearings on the mandate, as well as taking a second look at California’s Proposition 8, both the religious and secular will be standing together in the hope for equality. The vigils were inspired by rallies organized by Join the Impact after the proposition passed in 2008. “In much the same way that Join the Impact offered a way for folks across the country to connect with a big ‘movement moment,’ Light the Way to Justice is attempting to offer a way for anyone — from California to Connecticut and from Mississippi to Montana — to participate in these historic Supreme Court hearings,” said Heather Cronk, co-director of GETEQUAL. com, one of the groups behind Light the Way to Justice.

At press time, vigils were planned in West Palm Beach and Miami but with no details on when or where. The nearest rallies with definite plans are in Tampa, Jacksonville and Pensacola. No one knows what the justices will decide, and even more, no one knows how far reaching their decision could be. Not only could the outcome determine marriage equality for LGBT couples, but also sinks deeper into other issues like immigration for binational couples. Scarbrough and his partner met while living in New Mexico. Their daughter was born via surrogate more than 10 years later, and the little family moved to Tampa about a year ago. Neither state recognizes same-sex unions. “We are hoping that the justices realize that the only reason for federal marriage inequality is discrimination based on personal bias — there is no legal rationale at all,” Cronk said. “We are hoping for broad rulings in both the DOMA and Prop 8 cases that immediately grant loving same-sex couples across the country to marry in the community where they live, rather than having to travel or move to a new state.” While vigils and rallies of all sizes are planning across the country, the main event is in Washington, D.C. – the heart of the hearings. On March 26 and 27, supporters of marriage equality will be gathering at the steps of the Supreme Court for speakers, prayers, a seder, rallies and more. “We have something historic going on in that we have over 100 cities planning to do some sort of action on this day. It’s just something that you don’t see over Supreme Court actions,” Scarbrough said. “If any branch of the government or lawmakers can tell a couple what they can do with their lives or to their families, it does impact everybody.”

but against “all heterosexual families.” “On what they judge me, they will be judged,” Zavala said. “They don’t have interference in heaven. One day God will judge everything, and be prepared to explain to God why you called evil good, and good evil.” Equal Right Now, a gay equality group in Ecuador, is making a push to have Zavala charged with a hate crime as well. The news of this ruling comes as Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa apologized to the gay community for homophobic comments he made in 2012 in his reelection speech earlier this year.
+ Baltimore Man Becomes First Gay to Lead a Jewish Association
Rabbi Jason Klein was elected president of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, making him the first openly gay man to be the head of a rabbinic association. Klein, who has been executive director of Hillel at the University of Maryland since 2006, said if it weren’t for the support of people in his life he wouldn’t be where he is today. “Coming out and growing into my adult Jewish identity would not be the same were it not for affirming teachers, rabbis and other mentors along the way,” Klein told Jweekly after his election. “I am honored to be able to give back by supporting colleagues who are creating welcoming communities in hundreds of settings across North America and beyond.” Klein’s colleague Rabbi Mychal Copeland told Jweekly having a gay man as the head of their movement is important for the Jewish future. “Rabbi Jason Klein brings to this important role in our movement a unique blend of tradition and innovation,” Copeland said. “[He] possesses a keen awareness of where the next generation

of Jews will find meaning and connection.” According to Gay Star News, Reconstructist Judaism embraces the gay community as moral people fit to serve as clergy and has allowed its rabbis to perform same-sex marriages since 1993.
+ Go-Go Dancing Teacher Fired Over Possible Craigslist Gay Hook-Up
A New York City special education teacher has been fired after a colleague discovered emails and risqué photos he sent to another man in an apparent Craigslist hook-up on their shared account, according to an investigation by the NYC Department of Education. Matthew Maleski had been working at Elementary School Robert L. Stevenson for a little over a year before receiving the ax according to the New York Daily News. Besides teaching, Maleski appears in a YouTube video as a guest go-go dancer at a party in San Francisco as well as an advertisement for the gay social app Hornet The emails in question were sent between Oct. 14 and Oct. 28, 2012. Maleski was responding to different unidentified Craigslist ads with emails that school Principal Tara Napoleoni called “sexual in nature” along with photographs of himself dressed only in boxer shorts Malenski admitted to investigators that he had sent those emails and photos. He said the reason those emails were in the shared account was because he has the email account linked to his cellphone and had sent them on accident. Malenski was fired three months after the investigation concluded. Connie Pankratz, Director of Communications for the Department of Education, said Maleski was allowed to while the investigation was still ongoing.

Benefit For Lambda Legal Andrea Dulanto
adulanto03@gmail.com
On Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Lambda Legal presents its 10th Annual Reception at the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens in Fort Lauderdale. Lambda Legal, a national nonprofit organization, works to secure the civil rights of LGBT individuals and people with HIV. Since 1973, they have pursued litigation, advocated nondiscriminatory public policies and supported educational efforts — all in the name of equality. For those who may not be familiar with Lambda Legal, consider the following Lambda Legal cases in Florida — past and present. A high school in Arcadia, Florida prohibited a student, Amber Hatcher, from participating in the National Day of Silence. The case is currently in litigation — Lambda Legal has sued the DeSoto County School
Board, stating that the school has infringed upon Hatcher’s First Amendment rights. In Orlando, a gay male couple was refused the services of a fertility clinic. The fertility clinic case is also still open — Lambda Legal has recorded a complaint with the Orlando Human Rights Board, and acted with the Food and Drug Administration to establish nondiscriminatory policies for fertility clinics. At Jackson Memorial Hospital, a lesbian was not allowed at the bedside of her dying partner. The case with Jackson Memorial Hospital has been closed. But it continues to have an influential effect on the lives of LGBT families. Jeff Souva, National Events Director for Lambda Legal, refers to it as “Lambda Legal’s highest profile case in Florida during the last ten years.” In June 2008, Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit

on behalf of Janice Langbehn. Jackson Memorial Hospital had prevented Langbehn from visiting her dying partner Lisa Pond. Their adopted children were also refused visitation rights. Although the lawsuit was dismissed, the case led the way to President Obama’s decision to advocate for new federal regulations about hospital visitation rights related to LGBT families. In January 2011, the regulations were enacted. In October 2011, Langbehn was honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal. These cases prove that Lambda Legal does more than provide a voice for the disenfranchised. Each case, each action also builds towards a larger movement of social change. But as a nonprofit, their work cannot be completed without support. For ten years, the Fort Lauderdale Reception has benefited Lambda Legal’s efforts. “The first annual Lambda Legal in Fort Lauderdale event was held at the home of Tony Timiraos and Arthur Crispino,” said Souva. “The event has grown from a small cocktail reception in Tony and Arthur’s home to one of Lambda Legal’s largest events in the nation.” According to Souva, each year more than four hundred guests attend the reception with over $300,000 being raised for Lambda Legal. The Fort Lauderdale Reception features guest speaker Debbie Harris, a Lambda Legal client, and honoree Mark Ketcham,

executive director of SunServe, a social service and mental health agency in Wilton Manors. In 2013, Lambda Legal commemorates its 40th anniversary. Yet the work of the past ten years—the attainment of hospital visitation rights, the ongoing visibility of the Amber Hatcher case—indicate how much Florida can contribute to this national effort towards equal rights for LGBT individuals and people with HIV. “We thank the Fort Lauderdale community for ten years of friendship and support,” said Souva.

Annual AIDS walk comes back at full force

or 3.3 miles every year, the community comes together in the name of defeating HIV/AIDS. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s eighth annual Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival, scheduled for March 24, has exploded over the years, reigning in $3 million since its inception. The $25 registration fee allows one to take part in the walk and also experience a day filled with music, food and other entertainment. “It’s for a great value and it’s for a great cause,” said Mark Martin, the regional director of community relations and development for AHF. “It’s really important to really underscore that we are still in a fullblown AIDS crisis.” Getting its start as the Fort Lauderdale AIDS Walk, this year’s festival lineup includes local band Tony Cruz and the Band opening for Grammy Award winner and
festival headliner, Chaka Khan. The host for the show is Sheryl Lee Ralph, known for her roles in Dream Girls, Moesha and more recently in Smash. Also, she runs her own HIV nonprofit, DIVA. “The more we talk about it, the more conversations we have about it with our partners, our family, our doctors, our politicians,” said Jason King, who has participated in the walk for the last three years. “The more we stigmatize the disease, the more ammunition we give it.” King, who also serves as the legal affairs manager for AHF, was diagnosed with HIV at 19. “I just didn’t realize the risk,” he said about his college years. “I didn’t know anyone personally that had it who could be an example to me.” Today, King is open about his HIV status to educate others and promote an open dialogue.

It was the support of his family and former partner that helped him gain the confidence to be so candid about living with HIV. According to the Florida Department of Health, Florida has the third highest number of AIDS patients in the country and comes in second for new cases. For new HIV cases, Florida comes in first with the majority of cases being in South Florida. For Martin, his experience with HIV/AIDS began in high school when he saw gay men on television dying of what was then called GRID. Doctors wouldn’t even touch their patients. Then, it hit home when his best friend Tim found out he was HIV positive. He had been the one to move to Fort Lauderdale and drew a whole group of friends from their home in Texas. Martin watched him slowly deteriorate through depression, fear and being unable to pay for treatment. When the first AIDS Walk came into play, Martin and his Texas friends joined immediately. “We didn’t want anyone else in the world to suffer how Tim suffered physically and

Trantalis Wins Back Fort Lauderdale Commission Seat
Stunning Close Vote Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
One of Broward County’s leading gay activists for the past thirty years, Dean Trantalis has won back the City Commission of Fort Lauderdale seat he held from 2002-2006. The bitterly fought contest was with another former Fort Lauderdale commissioner, Charlotte Rodstrom, and the margin of victory for Trantalis was 20 votes out of nearly 3,100 cast. With all precincts reporting, Trantalis led Rodstrom, 1,545 to 1,525. The election was a run-off election between the two top vote getters, Trantalis and Rodstrom, both popular public figures in and out of the LGBT community. Trantalis ran a vigorous 21st century style campaign, punctuated with e-mail, social media and traditional feet-on-the ground campaigning, deluging the strong
LGBT venues, such as Victoria Park, with house signs on every corner. He needed to. The initial vote drew inertia and an apathetic public response. The vote total at the time was so low, he said, “it reminded me of a campaign for high school class president.” The runoff drew more people but became more intense as both candidates bitterly battled back and forth against each other, exchanging charges on who could best serve District 2 of Fort Lauderdale. The focus of the campaign often turned on the $200,000 cost of the election, only set into motion when Rodstrom resigned her city commission seat weeks after winning it. She vacated the seat in order to run for an open County Commission seat against a popular gay candidate, Ken Keechl. Both lost the race to Tim Ryan.

After losing the county race though, Rodstrom wound up reentering the ‘special election’ Fort Lauderdale had to conduct for the very seat she held and had been elected for months before. It antagonized cost conscious voters. Post ballot interviews with voters suggest the turning point against her may have been causing the city to expend funds on what many voters said was “the race that should never have been.” Gay supportive and gay friendly, Rodstrom, as well as Trantalis garnered a cross section of LGBT support. The edge went to Trantalis, who first started practicing transactional law on East Las Olas Boulevard in 1978. Today, Trantalis operates a, stand-alone, law office boutique on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, handling real estate, civil matters and transactional affairs. Stagecoaches, Success, and Social Justice Palm Beach County PrideFest Turns 20 Dylan Bouscher
Dylanjbouscher@gmail.com
Compass, the largest LGBT community center in the Southeast U.S. and fifth largest in the country, is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and they’re making sure to keep Palm Beach County’s LGBT community active. As CEO of Compass, Tony Plakas’ proudest moments of the last year include overseeing the first Florida production of a staged reading of a Prop 8 play about the California court case and decision. Next on the list for Plakas and Compass is launching into PrideFest in the middle of the season. This year’s theme is: United Colors of Pride. “It’s a very unique pride because it’s right there on the water, overlooking the intercoastal waterway,” Plakas says. “It’s kind of got a small hometown type feel.” It started with the raising of a rainbow-
striped flag outside the Lake Worth City Hall Tuesday March 19. Over the upcoming weekend PrideFest, more than 140 local businesses are sponsoring the event and advertising their food, jewelry, and art alongside non-profit organizations. Gioia Bruno from Expose is headlining this year’s Pridefest. “We wanted to try to find kind of a 80s retro headliner to make it more fun,” Plakas said. Other performers include Michaela Paige from NBC’s The Voice, Teri Catlin, Tony Cruz, the Static Attraction Board, Voices of Pride, and No Angle. One of the yearly highlights is always the festival’s pride parade, which takes place Sunday at 11:30 a.m., on South L Street in downtown Lake Worth and continues down Lucerne Avenue and Lake Avenue into Bryant Park. The historic Wells Fargo stagecoach that has led the pride parade

for the last two years returns to lead it for a third. Melissa St. John, the Parade Grand Marshal, will be riding it. “The parade is always very awesome,” Plakas said. This is the only stop the stagecoach makes in Florida, but it also appears in pride parades in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco, according to Compass Communications Coordinator, Ana Lucia Zagazeta. Plakas considers it a privilege and a symbol of the community’s recovery from the recession of the late 2000s. “What’s kind of exciting is, for a while there, people really saw a hit to the economy,” Plakas said. “Some people, vendors, that wanted to … support our community center were having a rough time and weren’t able to participate in past years.” This year? Plakas is struggling to find space for vendors, sponsors and supporters. “The great thing about our PrideFest is that we’re such an integrated community, that you just get a lot of familiar faces. We always kind of come out of the event charged up and wired.” Although Compass was formed in the 1980s, Plakas remembers when the “fault line of social justice” moved from MiamiDade County in the 1990s, to Broward County in the 2000s, and says it now lies in Palm Beach County. “We’re on the fault line of social justice,” Plakas said about Palm Beach County. “Once

you start going north of here … you start getting into a very rural area of Florida that, isn’t very friendly to our community.” While Plakas hopes the fault line keeps moving north as more cities in his county add equal protections and benefits for their LGBT communities, he is not sure it will. He is, of course, certain of one thing. “There is an absolute, undeniable will to see this community succeed.”

First GOP Senator Comes Out for Gay Marriage
Associated Press
CINCINNATI — Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio says he now supports gay marriage because one of his sons is gay. Portman told reporters Thursday in Washington that his views began changing in 2011 when his college-age son Will told his parents he was gay. Portman says he reconsidered gay marriage from a different perspective, one of a father who wants all three of his children to have happy lives with people they love. He says he discussed the issue with his

pastor and others, including former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is a lesbian. Two House Republicans, including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami, also have said they support marriage equality. As a member of the House in 1996, Portman had voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage.
soflagaynews //
Here’s an excerpt of Sen. Rob Portman’s op-ed in the Columbus Dispatch: I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn’t deny them the opportunity to get married. That isn’t how I’ve always felt. As a congressman, and more recently as a senator, I opposed marriage for same-sex couples. Then something happened that led me to think through my position in a much deeper way. Two years ago, my son Will, then a college freshman, told my wife, Jane, and me that he is gay. He said he’d known for some time, and that his sexual orientation wasn’t something he chose; it was simply a part of who he is. Jane and I were proud of him for his honesty and courage. We were surprised to learn he is gay but knew he was still the same person he’d always been. The only difference was that now we had a more complete picture of the son we love. At the time, my position on marriage for same-sex couples was rooted in my faith tradition that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. Knowing that my son is gay prompted me to consider the issue from another perspective: that of a dad who wants all three of his kids to lead happy, meaningful lives with the people they love, a blessing Jane and I have shared for 26 years. I wrestled with how to reconcile my Christian faith with my desire for Will to have the same opportunities to pursue happiness and fulfillment as his brother and sister. Ultimately, it came down to the Bible’s overarching themes of love and compassion and my belief that we are all children of God. Well-intentioned people can disagree on the question of marriage for gay couples, and maintaining religious freedom is as important as pursuing civil marriage rights. For example, I believe that no law should force religious institutions to perform weddings or recognize marriages they don’t approve of. British Prime Minister David Cameron has said he supports allowing gay couples to

marry because he is a conservative, not in spite of it. I feel the same way. We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives. We also consider the family unit to be the fundamental building block of society. We should encourage people to make long-term commitments to each other and build families, so as to foster strong, stable communities and promote personal responsibility. One way to look at it is that gay couples’ desire to marry doesn’t amount to a threat but rather a tribute to marriage, and a potential source of renewed strength for the institution. Over the past decade, nine states and the District of Columbia have recognized marriage for same-sex couples. It is understandable to feel cautious about making a major change to such an important social institution, but the experience of the past decade shows us that marriage for same-sex couples has not undercut traditional marriage. In fact, over the past 10 years, the national divorce rate has declined.

Killing the Angels
brian@brian-mcnaught.com
When young Matthew Shepard was tied to a split rail fence in Laramie, Wyoming, and bludgeoned to death with a gun, some gay people, myself included, referred to it as a “crucifixion.” A sacred spirit, or an angel if you will, had been murdered by blind bullies who believed him to be a revolting deviant worthy of destruction. I have long believed that the world’s wise, nurturing, generous, thoughtful, loving, spiritual souls are being senselessly hunted down and destroyed by fearful, ignorant people, like those from Sodom who surrounded the home of Lot with the intention of raping and killing the angels. Angels are an archetype, a universally accepted symbol of particular qualities or roles. Are gay people truly sacred spirits, or nature’s angels? The United States government didn’t believe so in 1966. In responding to a request to repeal the ban on gay people serving in government, the chair of the Civil Service Commission wrote, “Pertinent considerations here are the revulsion of other employees by homosexual conduct… the apprehension caused…by homosexual advances, solicitations, and assaults…the subjection of the sexual deviate to erotic stimulation through on-the-job use of a common toilet, shower, living facilities, the offense to members of the public who are required to deal with a known or admitted sexual deviate.” What if the last sentence had read instead, “…the offense to members of the public who are required to deal with a known or admitted angel”? Would other employees be revolted by the presence of a sacred spirit in the restroom? There’s a site on the Internet that helps you discover your archetype. It lists the archetypes as being spiritual, an athlete, a decision-maker, a rebel, etc. I took the quiz and wasn’t surprised by the results. I’m primarily a creative, spiritual, caregiver of others. The site didn’t know that I was a gay man. It appraised me based upon my response to questions. It didn’t eliminate the possibility of my being an angel because of my sexual orientation. We have created our own archetypes in the LGBT communities, such as bull-dyke, lipstick lesbian, hustler, femme, master, slave, etc. But these reflect the dominant culture’s attitude that we are defined by our sexual behaviors rather than by our feelings

of physical and emotional attraction. Are there other, more accurate archetypes that might be useful to us as we explore the positive nature of being gay. A book arrived in the mail recently entitled, “Fairy Tales - Traditional Stories Retold for Gay Men.” The author, Peter Cashorali, another spiritual, gay man, has created positive folktales featuring gay characters who find their way to selfactualization, and live happily ever after. There’s also a YouTube video making the rounds titled “On the Eighth Day, God Made a Gay Man.” In both instances, a fresh look is being taken at who gay men are in the world. Both assert the positive roles we have played throughout history, or would have played had we not been crucified? Coincidentally, I’ve been asked to work with a corporate group of LGBT employees to explore the gifts that they bring to the table at work. This invitation underscores my belief that the paradigm of gay liberation soflagaynews //
has shifted. Instead of seeing ourselves as victims who need to speak defensively about why we aren’t the monsters once described by the U.S. government, it’s time to examine the positive roles or archetypes that more accurately reflect who we are in the natural scheme of things. While there are many straight people who are also angels, and warriors, healers, social justice advocates, and sages, no one questions their ability to be so. If gay people, however, were also truly believed to be Buddhas, Christs, prophets, medicine men, Yodas, and otherwise worthy of awe and gratitude, we wouldn’t be beaten up outside of gay bars by street gangs, or be the subject of witch hunts in seminaries. I grew up wanting to be a saint. I think I’ve always been one at heart, and what I yearned for was confirmation by others around me. I never really believed that I was evil for being attracted to other men, but I knew that those feelings had been
SouthFloridaGayNews.com
demonized by my culture, so it was a secret that I shouldn’t reveal. I didn’t try to take my life at age 26 because I thought I was the devil. I was a very lonely angel who wanted to go home where I belonged. Others who know me may laugh at the angel archetype I’d choose for myself, and I can laugh with them. My halo is askew. I don’t see every gay person as an angel. There are many archetypes in our community. But I have known many gay angels in my lifetime, people who glow with compassion, generosity, thoughtfulness, loving kindness, good humor, courage, fortitude, and holiness. When two gay angels come together in love, their home overflows with positive energy. I didn’t know Matthew Shepard, but I’ve known hundreds of young, gay men just like him. They are sweet gifts to the world, summoned like Clarence in the film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” to be on earth as the family member, neighbor, classmate, professional, parent, and good friend who reminds us all of what being a really good person can look like, and why life is worth living fully and happily. My friend John Corvino, another angel, has an excellent new book out entitled “What’s Wrong with Homosexuality?” It belongs in the hands of every seminarian and religious leader, every teacher of human sexuality and of ethics, every serious thinker who wants access to clear, precise responses to all of the negative comments made about gay people, whether based on biblical quotes or oral tradition. The title works for John’s book, but I want all future discussions about our community to be named, “What’s Right With Homosexuality?” It’s time for all LGBT people to look at ourselves as having great purpose and explore what that means to how we’re living our lives, and what gifts we represent in our world. We might be angels, warriors, caretakers, mystics, sages, or not. But when we know and claim our role, others are less likely to fearfully carry torches in the street. No enlightened person kills an angel. Brian McNaught was named “the godfather of gay diversity training” by The New York Times. He works with corporate executives globally, is the author of six books, and is featured in seven educational DVDs. He and his spouse Ray Struble divide their year between Ft. Lauderdale and Provincetown. Visit BrianMcNaught.com for more information.

My HIV Diary Brain Dead, Week 28
My numbers are doing well. I’m still undetectable and my CD4 count is in the 700’s for the first time in a long time. Photo courtesy of Jean-Etienne Minh-Duy Poirrier
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 28
(March 8 to March 14) Don’t worry, I don’t have a new side effect. I mean really, I wouldn’t be writing this if I were really brain dead, right? I’m just around the corner from day 200 of my medicine study and for once I’m finding myself struggling with what to write about. My numbers are doing well. I’m still undetectable and my CD4 count is in the 700’s for the first time in a long time. I told a friend of mine about my numbers and he asked if he could borrow a few of my T-Cells (My readers with HIV should get a chuckle out of that). To solve my first writing block I did what any 20-something in America would do, I took to Facebook to ask my adoring friends what the heck I should write about because who better to tell me what to feel than people online. Michael suggested I write about who or

what inspires and pushes me forward in darker moments. I have to admit that I put on a smile because I feel that is what people expect of me. I find it hard sometimes to really tell people how I feel. What keeps me going when I start to wonder into the dark side of my thoughts is knowing that sometimes other people rely on me to be there for them. I don’t ever want to miss a message or call from someone I could have helped. I can’t be selfish like that. Dana said I should write about him. There you go, Dana. That’s all I have for you. Maurice wanted me to write about some old white guy in Rome with red shoes. I’m a Baptist so I won’t be much help with that. One other suggestion stuck out at me. This one came from Jeff. Jeff said that not knowing what to write about can be an interesting subject in itself. I agree. I asked myself, why is there nothing to talk about. I feel as if I’ve finally transitioned from using this diary to update the world on the side effects of my medication, to using it to show people what living with HIV is really like. I struggle with my job, as you can clearly read, I have car troubles and I’m always looking for the next big thing. Yes, I have this incurable virus living inside my body, but I’m doing the best I can to manage it. I’m trying to survive, just like all of you are.

Papal White Smoke Poisonous For Gay Catholics
Tony Adams carries a tray of cardinal hats to Pope Paul VI during the 1976 consistory. Photo courtesy of Tony Adams
Because there are no overtly gay-friendly cardinals on earth, when the 115 voting-age scarlet princes glided into the Sistine chapel to select from their ranks a new pope, hopes were slim that gay Catholics would benefit from the conclave. When the chosen one stepped out onto the balcony of Saint Peter’s basilica, it was clear that the haze of white smoke over the crowd in the piazza was laced with carbon monoxide smuggled in from Argentina and lethal to gay Catholics. Unless the new Pope Francis does some serious backpedaling from his anti-gay words and record in Buenos Aires, the “Extra Omnes” [Everybody out!] that is intoned when the doors to the conclave are locked will never be an exhortation to gay Catholics to feel free to come out of their closets and to share love openly. Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio who has named himself Pope Francis is reputed to be a simple man who cooks for himself, takes the bus (which in Buenos Aires is a scary choice) and eschews the trappings of prestige, including the bishop’s palace. Those are admirable qualities, as was his Holy Thursday choice to wash the feet of persons with AIDS, but before we get tearyeyed over what may seem like an antidote to his gilded predecessor, we ought to consider the fact that Pope Francis went beyond the call of duty in opposing gay marriage and gay adoption in Argentina. All cardinals follow the directives of their boss and deliver boilerplate proclaiming

that gay sex is opposed to the natural law of God, but Cardinal Bergoglio went further and laced his script with original messages of hate, calling gay marriage “a machination

of the Father of Lies [Satan] that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.” He also said that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children because it deprives them of the possibility of a good life that can only come from families comprised of one father and one mother. If he thinks his home girl Evita’s “Rainbow Tour” was an embarrassing flop, I hope he’s got his white watered silk seatbelt tightly fastened because he is in for a bumpy ride. Moments after his first appearance, gay activists began the drumbeat of protest suggesting a worldwide demonstration against a church so bent on oppressing its gay members that it would choose a leader more rabidly anti-gay than the other men among the “papabili.” We get the message. It is now clear that in the days before the conclave when the cardinals gathered together to discuss the problems faced by a church in crisis, gay people did not appear on the list of needed reparations. It is obvious that the cardinals were not looking for a pope who could make any of us want to darken a church door except to view the frescoes depicting a savior who had long ago

left the building and who would disapprove of such a pope. Upon hearing the news of Bergoglio’s ascension to the throne of Peter, friends asked me if he is gay. I think he is of that most dangerous breed of cardinal: the elderly virgin who has never constructed an erotic fantasy, assumes that Jesus also never wanted sex–gay or straight–and believes that the surest road to heaven is to encourage by neglect the starved withering of his god-given sex organs. No wonder he hates The Gay. Pope Francis will be appealing to those who find the wealth and opulence of Catholicism distasteful, but I fear his lessons and example will be a triumph of style over substance; and given that the leopard never changes his spots, we will probably not see the changes we had only barely dared to dream. He is 76 years old. He has only one lung with which to spew his nonsense. Maybe God will intervene on our behalf, but I won’t be holding my breath except whenever I taste the acidic tingle of white smoke.

Paul & Tina: Dream Duo “Admission” stars talk new film’s acceptance theme, first jobs and shower scene Chris Azzopardi
T
hey say dreams come true, and that one where Tina Fey and Paul Rudd act (and shower) together on the big screen – it’s really happening. Two of the most charismatic, gay-loved actors team up for “Admission,” about a college admissions officer (Fey) and her could-be biological son who she meets through an old classmate (Rudd). “It’s a movie about chasing acceptance. That formal outward acceptance shouldn’t be valued as much. That’s the message: Just be who you are,” says Fey, a GLAAD winner for “30 Rock” who recounted her gay musical-theater origins in her “Bossypants” memoir. Rudd’s career started, and still is, just as queer: besides “Clueless,” he starred as Jennifer Aniston’s best gay pal in “The Object of My Affection.” And that’s just the beginning of his homo happenings. Yes, it’s true. It’s really true,” he says, reflecting on the increasingly gay apex of his career at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, seated next to Fey. What does he have to say about that important message of self-love and acceptance, then? Surely something gay, right? In goofy Rudd-style, just what you’d expect: “Lily Tomlin’s in it!” he quips with his sly smirk, referring to the comedian’s role as Fey’s mother. “There’s your answer.”

What did you see as the biggest challenge of taking on these characters? Tina: For me, it was just trying to do a good job of what I felt was the dramatic arc of the movie. There were certainly scenes that were more emotional than anything I have ever had to do before. Paul: Just doing it – that was the challenge. (Laughs) That you buy me in the part and it works in the context of the story, and that the conflict seems legit and the character is not one-dimensional – all those things that I think kind of existed in the script. The challenge is just bringing the material to life. Oh god, did I just say that? Tina: You did. Paul: Forgive me. Can you relate to the admissions process? Tina: I wasn’t growing up in some kind of private-school world where it was expected of you to try to get into an Ivy League school or something. I think there are people who grow up in a family where it’s like, “If you don’t get into Harvard or Yale or Princeton, you’re done!” I think that’s craziness. Paul: I never grew up with that at all. I didn’t apply to any of those schools – mainly because I know I wouldn’t have gotten in. I was just out to lunch when it came to all that stuff. Living in New York City, I’m certainly much more aware of it now. I’m much more aware of it having friends that went to those schools and even having young kids and seeing how they’re being groomed for these schools. What was it like to come from Kansas City and head to New York to become an actor? Paul: Well, I wasn’t born in Kansas City; I was born here. I lived in Kansas and then California and then went back to Kansas. Nobody in my family did this, but it felt normal to me because I was pursuing what I wanted to do. I had as much false confidence as I possibly could muster, because my parents told me as a young kid that I could be anything I wanted to be – and I actually believed them.

Were you doing the waiting tables thing, then? Paul: I was working in the kitchen at a Bennigan’s. I didn’t even get to wait tables. I was in the back expediting and making salads. You also DJed. What records were you playing that got the girls and boys on the floor? Paul: MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” was pretty popular, and Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” was a huge crowd pleaser. There were those two, and then there were classics like “Mony Mony” and “What I Like About You” by The Romantics. I’ve been out of the bar mitzvah DJing game so I don’t know if those are still popular, but they were big hits when I was spinning. Do you regret not having those experiences, Tina? Tina: I made cheesesteaks at a swim club snack bar so that my mom could have free access to the pool. (Laughs) My brother did it for a year, and then she transitioned me into doing it so she could continue to have employee access. As an actress, and even more so as a writer, what do you think the secret is to great comedy?
Tina: I see it as a series of increasingly larger grifts that I’m running. “30 Rock” was more of a shell game; this is more of a Ponzi scheme. This happened while “30 Rock” was on a summer hiatus, and it felt like a really lucky thing to be offered to do – a part that always made sense. I’m always pleased when I see a part where people speak intelligently and speak like adults and also, I go, “College admissions lady – do I look like that?” Yeah, I look like that more than, perhaps, Denise Richards would. Yet you got called “cougar” in the movie. Tina: It’s in my contract. Did you talk to anyone in admissions? Tina: I did. Jean (Hanff Korelitz), who wrote the book, worked in admissions and I met her many times, and I did talk to one or two other people who worked in admissions. One thing that was interesting: Someone who wasn’t connected to the movie, who was an admissions person, said, “People think we really want to say ‘no’ to everyone when really what we want is to be saying ‘yes.’” Their happiest moments and their goal was to be able to say “yes” to as many kids who they think will thrive.
What makes a comedy a classic? Paul: It has to be really funny, and funny over a long period of time. If it was funny 10 years ago, it has to have been funny 20 years ago. Tina: I saw “Trading Places” on TV recently, and Eddie Murphy in the first five minutes of that movie, where he’s pretending to be homeless – so funny! That holds up. “Clueless” is still popular with the teens. Paul: Well, I have no perspective on that one! (Laughs) What would you tell a kid who’s going through the admissions process? Tina: Do your best, but also know that the results don’t define your value as a person or your future as a student or an adult in the world. It does not define what you’re gonna be. It’s interesting because I think there are so many kids who do all the right things to get on the right track now, and there are just too many of them on the right tack. As the schools make a genuine attempt at diversity, I think some kids are taking the old-school path and getting bumped out. Hopefully that shuffling will make them more interesting people on a more interesting path.
As a woman who’s able to get movies made in Hollywood versus the indie world, are you getting the offers you want? Tina: Sure, yes. Because I don’t expect to be the person who’s like, “Let me see my offers today.” A part like this, I feel so lucky to have been offered. There are a lot of real movie stars in the world, and I’m always thrilled any time the phone rings. Ahem … no one from “Anchorman 2” has called, so if you could pass that on. How do you juggle everything, Tina? Doing this movie, writing scripts, taking care of children … Tina: Well, I mean, I try to take care of my children, yeah. (Laughs) But I have help with that. I wasn’t writing anything at the same time (as doing “Admission”) because I wanted to make sure I was focused. But you just take as much help as you can get and go to sleep whenever anyone’s not looking. Chris Azzopardi is the editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service. Try to surround yourself with people who are really funny and good at it
Tina: Oh gosh. Obviously try to surround yourself with people who are really funny and good at it. Like Paul. Paul: Aww. Tina: Yes! And trust your own instinct. Was it hard to shoot the shower scene? Tina: There are so many built-in humiliations in a thing like that. We shot that shower scene very late in the evening. Paul: And it was cold. Tina: Just out of frame, I’m wearing a rolled-down bikini top they gave me; they’re like, “We have a skin-colored one just in case.” Then jams and Crocs. So it’s already ridiculous. We don’t need to add to it.
”
Paul: I didn’t have the rolled-down bikini top, but I did have the jams – and I think I might’ve had the Crocs, too. Tina: Because it was, like, not clean. Paul: No. We were in a barn! Tina, do you see this as act three in your life now that “30 Rock” is done? soflagaynews //

“I think self-awareness is probably the most important thing towards being a champion.”
“Whether it’s in the right way or sometimes the wrong way, you learn about life and its lessons.”
Life Magazine named Billie Jean King one of the “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century.” A tennis champion and an outspoken advocate for gender equality in sports, King has become an icon and legend for her contributions to the advancement of women’s sports. King purchased her first tennis racquet at age 12 and demonstrated exceptional aptitude for game. During her first lesson, King recalls thinking “I knew I’d found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” In 1961, at age 17, King won her first grand slam title at Wimbledon in the women’s doubles tournament. She quickly became known for her aggressive style and personality. In 1966, she won her first of 12 Grand Slam singles titles. An outspoken advocate against sexism in sports, King hoped “to use sports for social change.” She campaigned for equal prize awards after receiving $15,000 less in prize money than her male counterpart in the 1972 U.S. Open. In 1973, King threatened to boycott the tournament. The following year, the U.S. Open became the first major tournament to award equal prize money to male and female champions. King became the first woman to defeat a former male Wimbledon Champion in “The Battle of the Sexes.” The Women’s Tennis Association named her its first president and in 1974, King co-founded WomenSports Magazine and began the Women’s Sports Foundation. King struggled to come to terms with her sexuality. During her 22-year marriage she had an intimate affair with her assistant, Marilyn Barnett. King remained in the closet until 1981. She came out publicly in 1988. Since then, she has helped further the visibility and inclusion of the LGBT community.
Amélie Mauresmo was the World No. 1 tennis player. She won 25 career titles including two Grand Slams. In 2004, she received an Olympic Silver medal in tennis singles. Mauresmo was born in Laye, France, where she began playing tennis at age 4. Her talent on the court was quickly recognized, and her parents enrolled her in private lessons. At 17, she was named Junior World Champion after winning both the French Open and Wimbledon. In 1999, two years into her professional career, Mauresmo came out during the Australian Open. She publicly embraced her girlfriend after defeating the World No. 1 player, Lindsay Davenport. Mauresmo credited her on-court success to coming to terms with her sexuality. She is the first tennis player to come out without losing any major sponsors. Mauresmo is one of only a few tennis players to reach World No. 1 ranking before winning a Grand Slam title. Known for her powerful one-handed backhand and net play, she has defeated top-ranked players such as Venus and Serena Williams, Martina Hingis, and Justine Henin. In 2003, she helped France capture the Fed Cup. In 2007, the president of France presented Mauresmo with the Legion of Honor. Two years later, she announced her retirement. Since retiring, Mauresmo has coached other professional tennis players. In 2009, she became ambassador of the Sport for Life Foundation, a Swissbased organization dedicated to supporting young athletes. “I want to share the experiences I’ve gathered along my career with young people so they cannot walk into traps,” she says. “Respect for values is the foundation for success!” Mauresmo resides in Geneva, Switzerland.

“The moment I stepped onto that crunchy red clay, felt the grit under my sneakers, felt the joy of smacking a ball over the net, I knew I was in the right place.”
Martina Navratilova has won 168 singles tennis titles, more than any other tennis player in history, male or female. She has won 58 Grand Slam tournaments, including a record nine Wimbledon singles titles. Navratilova knew from an early age that she wanted to be a tennis player. At 16, she turned pro and two years later, she defected from her native Czechoslovakia to the United States. In 1981, she became an American citizen. Navratilova played a powerful serve-and-volley style of tennis the women’s game had not seen before. She pioneered attention to diet and crosstraining for physical conditioning. Navratilova’s friend and former on-court rival Chris Evert said, “Martina revolutionized the game by her superb athleticism and aggressiveness, not to mention her outspokenness and her candor. She brought athleticism to a whole new level with her training techniques . . . . She had everything down to a science, including her diet, and that was an inspiration to me.” In 1981, Navratilova became the first athletic superstar to announce her sexual orientation. While her candor cost her millions in endorsement opportunities, her tournament winnings alone in 1982 made her the first female athlete to earn more than one million dollars in a year. Navratilova retired from women’s singles tennis in 1994, but continued as a mixed doubles player until 2006, winning a total of 175 doubles titles in her career. She has earned a reputation as an advocate of gay rights, the environment, animal welfare, and women’s issues. She spoke at the 1993 March on Washington and filed a lawsuit against the enactment Colorado’s Amendment 2, which banned legal protection for lesbians and gays in housing and employment.

Mom’s Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce Chad Thilborger I have been asked all sorts of questions about food and preparation however the most common question I have been asked since the book has come out is what is the most important thing about cooking? The question has stumped me, but now I have it. Go into the kitchen with excitement, not fear and secondly a sense of youthful abandon, or fun not a sense of rules and a sense of rigidity. The kitchen is a place to create. It’s a place where both the right brained and left brained person can flourish. Yes there are measures and rules and temperatures but there are also thousands upon thousands of flavor combinations and options for you to consider and try. The two people I admired most in the kitchen were Maw Maw (my maternal grandmother) and my Mom. These two women had two very different styles in the kitchen. Maw Maw seemed to make delicious over the top meals magically appear onto a table for the 15 to 20 family members there to ravenously devour it all.

I sometimes throw the mixture into the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds to plump them. Or skip the soaking Break the bread up into a large bowl and pour the milk over the top and stir. 1 stick of butter 1 cup of sugar 1 egg and 2 ounces of Whiskey (OR Bourbon OR Rum) In a Double Boiler melt butter and add sugar. Dustin Lance Black’s “8” - the play that portrays the actual events of the Perry v. Schwarzenegger trial which led to the overturn of California’s Proposition 8 will open at Florida Atlantic University by fraternity Alpha Psi Omega on March 29. But before the play, Junior Daniela Feriozzi wants to show the community that no one is alone. Feriozzi and a few students who are putting on “8” are welcoming the South Florida community to submit real stories of overcoming hate throughout their lives. “As long as a person can relate how they are an ally to the [LGBT] community, they can submit their stories,” Feriozzi said. Beginning at 5 p.m., two hours prior to the opening of “8”, stories that have been submitted will be showcased in the University Theatre lobby on the Boca Raton campus. “It isn’t just limited to words, people have also submitted pieces of art,” Feriozzi said. “Not all stories will be read aloud. Many will be around the lobby for people to read and talk to other people about.” There is no cost to attend the exhibition, but the play is $10. All proceeds from the play will go to the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact ⎯ two national organizations dedicated to marriage equality. Feriozzi said that while she isn’t a lesbian, she is “an ally to the community,” which is what the community stories should represent. If you want to share your
story of overcoming hate race, gender, and sexual orientation included Feriozzi is looking for you. While the creators of the play were putting together “8”, Feriozzi said a few of them were looking for ways to incorporate South Floridians into the discussion. “We thought it’d be cool if people could share their stories before the play,” she said. “For anyone who submits, they are welcome to attend the final dress rehearsal for “8”.” As of press time, nearly 20 people have submitted stories. “8” is based on the federal trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger that ruled Proposition 8 the constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriage in California was a violation of equal protection and eventually banned.

Miss Richfield, 1981
Pork Fried Pageant Queen
J.W. Arnold
jw@prdconline.com
Winning a major pageant like Miss U.S.A., Miss America or Miss Universe can propel a young lady’s career to international stardom, but no one could image how winning the title Miss Richfield (Minnesota) in 1981 would transform the life of a certain shy and demure small town girl. Since that momentous day, Miss Richfield 1981 has won over thousands of devoted fans on television, stage and the silver screen. Oh, and also on any gay cruise that will have her… even if she has to swim out to the ship herself! Miss Richfield 1981 returns to Fort Lauderdale for two shows, Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22 at The Manor with a new show, Sweet and Sour Richfield: Made in China. She took a few minutes from her very busy schedule — did we mention very busy — to speak with SFGN about her upcoming appearance:
What is it about China that inspired your new show? I was looking for someplace interesting and out of the way, and I was told that China is at least a two-and-a-half week ride on the Greyhound. I also wanted to get on the bandwagon of this outsourcing thing, while it’s still popular here in America. So, you’re being outsourced to China … exactly what services will you be providing? Just looking at my photo, I’m sure you’re aware I am a beauty professional and title holder, having been crowned Miss Richfield in my hometown of Richfield, Minnesota on July 4, 1981. So, I think my skills in glamour and style will be quite useful in a land where the general population generally has similar hair and lovely smiles.
Will there be any Chinese music, fashions or product placements in your new show? Of course! I always make my programs as authentic as possible. I wish I could reuse my cactus outfit from last year’s Mexican themed show, because it was so stunning and I look exceptional in green. But, alas, I had to invest in Chinese clothing, which I’m finding is made by children, who can really do detail work with their tiny, nimble fingers. How do you feel about sweatshop labor? I feel it is criminal that anyone should have to work without air conditioning or at least a fan.

I admire your conviction, but pennies an hour in wages won’t buy much mascara, will they? Fortunately, that’s not an issue as I don’t wear make-up.

What will your fans think about all of this? Will you finally have to surrender your title? The people of Richfield, my family and all of my co-workers and friends seem to be extremely supportive of moving me to China. And I’m not concerned about my beauty pageant title as the gal who was the first runner-up in 1981 unfortunately got heavy. What do you think about Asian men? There’s so many things to love about those Oriental guys… they’re so pleasant and polite, but hard to spot in a crowd, unless I remember to look down. Plus, no back hair! What’s not to love? Do you think China is ready for you? I’m hoping it will be a nice surprise for the folks over there, as I can’t imagine they have anything quite like me in China. And, I’m thinking if times get tough, I could always bear a child. I hear white kids are a valuable commodity over there!

What will you miss most about the U.S. while you’re away? Being able to eat a nice meal and not be hungry an hour later! Are you looking forward to returning to Fort Lauderdale? Yes, I adore Florida! It’s so pretty and affordable! I always stay in a lovely pod at Hialeah Mini-Storage, where your first month is free! And the hospitality is top notch with those friendly Mexicans from Cuba. So I’ll see you this weekend! Sayonara and Adios!

Alfredo’s Fire a&e tony’s talks
Tony Adams
On Jan. 13, 1998 Alfredo Ormando, a 39-year old gay Italian writer, arrived in Rome by train from Sicily in the early morning. He made his way to St. Peter’s Square where he knelt down and lit himself on fire, burning himself to death to protest the Catholic Church’s demonization of homosexuality. A nearly completed documentary film, Alfredo’s Fire, tells the story of his questionable martyrdom without hiding the failures of a life culminating in one final act of protest that is considered “the Italian Stonewall.” I questioned the film’s director, Andy Abraham Wilson, about his characterization of Alfredo’s suicide and his reasons for making the documentary. Tony Adams: Was Alfredo’s suicide heroic or was it the last gesture of a miserable man with serious psychological problems?
Andy Abraham Wilson: There are so many layers to Alfredo. You are not going to find him to be simply a hero or a villain and I think that reflects Italian society and Sicilian society, in which gay identity is slowly emerging. Alfredo had a problem with invisibility. He felt condemned by the church and by his family. He took to walking around town in his village wearing dark glasses to express his feeling of being unseen and unknown.
You met the people in Alfredo’s life. His brother is shown to be a liar about the family’s acceptance of Alfredo as gay. What was he like? That brother was a bit slimy, to tell you the truth. When I went to Sicily to interview the family, some of the men of the family picked me up in a car and drove me out to a country house where the women were kept upstairs cooking while the men quizzed me about

the film. It wasn’t long before they got to the point saying, “We think you are going to make a lot of money off this story, so…” You focus on Gaetano, the older man with physical problems who hires Alfredo as a caregiver and has kept his memory alive by maintaining Alfredo’s room, toiletries and clothing exactly as he left them when he went to Rome to kill himself. What was he like? Again, Gaetano is the personification of the denial and invisibility that Alfredo found so terrible. You will notice in the film that Gaetano would never even use the word “gay.” He would say “diverso.” The idea of a gay culture or identity did not even exist in Sicily in 1998. Neither Gaetano nor Alfredo ever referred to each other as lovers or partners although I am sure they had a love relationship that was sexual. What drew you to this story? I spent a lot of time in Italy, in Urbino and at the University of Florence. An Italian friend told me about Alfredo, and how the gay community was calling him a martyr and the Catholic Church was calling him a crazy person. I was shocked that the Vatican downplayed the event, saying it was a desperate act of a disturbed person. What most drew me was that he chose the protest of fire, which was the perfect allegory in the context of spirituality. Self-annihilation and

extinction, a coming out, a communion with god. I am very drawn to symbols in my work. I had to find out who Alfredo was and why he did what he did. I made several other films but kept coming back to this story. What are your plans for the film? We have a “Kickstarter” campaign to get the final funding needed to complete it in the next couple of months with a premier in late spring or early summer. It so happens that Italy’s national Pride event will be held in Palermo, Sicily, this year, so we may do something in conjunction with that. We have also started a project online called “Sparks of Fire” which is a repository for similar stories from the LGBT community. We know the Vatican has not changed since Alfredo’s death, but has Italy changed much? There is a stronger gay identity in Italy now. In the film, you hear activist Ima Battaglia call Alfredo’s death the “Italian Stonewall.” She started Italian Pride and says she did so in response to Alfredo’s death. That is his legacy. Some may call him martyr, some call him crazy but he created a myth. Just like Jesus Christ who was made into a myth, the real Alfredo may never be known but he has had a huge impact. LGBT Art Festival Sends Out Call for Artists Andrea Dulanto
adulanto03@gmail.com
For the past fourteen years, ArtsUnited has provided LGBT artists with opportunities to display their work in South Florida. The nonprofit organization regularly presents art exhibitions at Stonewall National Museum & Archives and Stork’s Bakery; they also coordinate United and Proud, an art show during LGBT Pride Month in June. In addition, there are special ArtsUnited events such as the upcoming photography exhibit, “We Do, Too,” which features the wedding photos of same-sex couples, and takes place at the LGBT Visitor Center on Miami Beach from March 22 to April 30, 2013. Yet, one of ArtsUnited’s most notable events is ArtExplosion. This year, the LGBT art festival is set for April 6 to April 26, 2013 at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale. Peter Meyerhoefer, President of ArtsUnited, shared some of the festival’s history.

“ArtExplosion started in 2001 as a way to bring all the art forms together to showcase and support the LGBT community,” he said. “Back when ArtExplosion was created there was not much exposure for LGBT artists. ArtExplosion worked to fill that void.” The festival used to incorporate LGBT music and literary arts; however, Meyerhoefer stated that other groups were formed to promote these artistic genres, and ArtExplosion developed into a juried fine art show. The juror for ArtExplosion 2013 is Dr. Annette Fromm, who has over thirty years of experience in museums. As the coordinator of the museum studies program at Florida International University’s Frost Art Museum, Fromm organized “Spiritual Healing: Shaman of the Northwest Coast” and “Reflections Across Time: Seminole Portraits.” LGBT artists who would like their artwork to be considered for the show should drop it off during intake at ArtServe on March 30, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications and entry fees are due on the day of intake. ArtsUnited members pay $20 to enter their work. Nonmembers pay $45. It’s important to note that this is a juried art show. “This means that not all the artwork submitted is accepted,” said Meyerhoefer. Yet he also confirmed that “ArtExplosion is open to all artists.” “The artists that enter the show range from beginners to professional artists. The fact that the show is juried does attract artists because they know the quality level of the show will be higher,” he said. Meyerhoefer also added that another incentive to enter the show is the cash prizes — $500 for Best of Show, $100 for soflagaynews //
the Best of Category. Eligible categories of art include paintings, photographs, sculpture, pottery, furniture, and jewelry. There is a limit of three pieces of artwork per category. Complete guidelines are available at the ArtsUnited website. “It has been a few years since we have had anyone enter a piece of jewelry or furniture,” observed Meyerhoefer. “There has been a change in the show entries with the economy. The works that are more expensive to make have dwindled in the past years. It costs a lot of money to create a sculpture. On the other hand, we have seen a rise in photography and mixed media. As technology has improved, more artists are experimenting using the computer.” He also added that the theme for ArtExplosion is kept open “to allow for greater creativity.” The festival will hold an opening night reception on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. On opening night, there is a $10 admission fee to cover the costs of the festival and to benefit ArtsUnited. “This is our largest fundraiser for the year,” said Meyerhoefer. “We will have live music, food from local restaurants, refreshments.” “An attendee can expect to see a show that would be welcomed in any gallery, [and] price points that are affordable. All artwork is for sale and twenty-five percent of the sale goes to ArtsUnited,” he said. In addition, there will be a penny auction of art books, small artworks, and other donated items. Opening night attendees can also vote for their favorite artwork. For more information about ArtsUnited and ArtExplosion 2013, visit artsunitedflorida.com or call 305-281-0556.

NEED WOOD Tips for Getting Timber
By Woody Miller
HIV DISCLOSURE SHOULD I ASK OR SHOULD YOU TELL?
50
HeyWoody, I know I'm a little late on the subject but I just got through reading my back issues of this magazine and I can't believe the bull crap you wrote about disclosing HIV. You totally let HIV positive guys off the hook. I can't believe you actually said it's more important that negativesaskthanpositivestell. Earth to woody! Positive guys have the moral obligation to tell people whether asked or not. I'm surprised at you. Since when are you afraid of hurting someone's feelings? Anybody who gets HIV these days willfully gets it. You can't plead ignorance and you can't plead innocence. I say quit coddling positive guys, Woody. Tell them what they need to hear: If you go home with someone you must tell them you're HIV Positive. It's time to stop thinking with your d!*k and be more concerned about spreading the disease than spreadingyourseed. -Stillshakingmyhead Dear Shaking, First off, I did NOT say positive guys shouldn't disclose. Listen to Dr. Brad Thomason (my exboyfriend, of all things) for my reasoning. Thomason is a psychologist at the Center of HIV Educational Studies. (By the way, we broke up after my parrot exposed his infidelity. Every time I came home the parrot kept saying, “Give it to me hard before Woody comes home.”) Anyway, Thomason works with a lot of HIV patients and you wouldn't believe the horror stories they tell him about disclosing. That's why he believes - and convinced me--that it's more important for negatives to ask than for positives to disclose. It's not negatives should shoulder more of // because 3.20.2013 // SFGN.com //
the burden. It's because it's so much easier for them. I'm negative. What's the worst that can happen to me if I tell someone my status and ask for theirs? There's very little likelihood anybody's going to reject me (most guys are negative). Now, ask Thomason about the HIV patients he sees after they disclose. Many go through the emotional wringer—from getting cussed out to being abandoned, to getting beat up. “What is merely awkward for a negative person to bring up,” says Thomason, “is dangerous for the positive person.” My own experience with friends supports his contention. Some HIV'ers are so emotionally vulnerable they feel like walking piñatas. It's one thing to get your candy cracked open by a big stick in bed, but it's an entirely different thing to have it done on your heart. I have a friend with HIV who dated a “keeper” several times before telling him. The words of his stinging rejection still ring in his ears: “I'm not dating anyone I have to bury.” My friend burst into tears. “I felt like damaged goods. But then I got mad and thought, damn, I should've told him, 'most couples don't die simultaneously, you ass, so no matter what, somebody's burying somebody in a relationship.” My point with these sad-sack stories is that positives take a whole lot more emotional and physical risks disclosing than negatives do. Psychologist Thomason's first underlying principle is that each person is responsible for their own health. I agree. If you won't take responsibility for your own health, you don't have the right to bash somebody who won't take responsibility for it either.
