McCain’s Wife to Star in Gay Marriage Play Contrary to the Republican senator, his wife and daughter are pro-gay John McCain may oppose gay marriage, but that doesn’t mean his family does. Cindy McCain, wife of the politician, has announced she’ll be participating in an Arizona production of Dustin Lance Black’s Proposition 8 play, named “8.” She confirmed her appearance on Twitter: “Proud to be a part,” she wrote.

The ballot measure Proposition 8 stripped away gay and lesbian couples from the right to marry in California. The play is based on the true-life account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown). The case is currently being discussed in the U.S. Supreme Court. Arizona’s staging of the play

will hit Phoenix’s Herberger Theater in May. While Sen. McCain has publicly expressed his opposition to gay marriage, his wife and daughter, Meghan McCain, feel otherwise. They both posed for the NOH8 photo campaign in 2010. Director Rob Reiner said this year he wants to turn the play into a movie.

Markell believes a bill legalizing gay marriage in the state could be passed this year Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is rallying around his state, pressuring legislators to introduce a bill to legalize gay marriage in the state. “It can happen here in Delaware and it can happen this year,” Gov. Markell said during a rally at the University of Delaware Trabant on April 8, The News Journal reports, .

“If you promise to do your part, and to ensure that a marriage equality bill reaches my desk this year, I make a promise to you, I will sign it.” For their part, Republicans in the state recently passed an amendment declaring that anyone hired by the Delaware GOP should line up with the party’s core values,

which include standing “for traditional family values and all hired representatives of that organization shall publicly reflect that view,” according to the Washington Blade. Civil unions were passed in Delaware on January 2012. The state also provides workplace protections against sexual orientation and gender identity.

His partner Thoba added, “This is who we are and we are just tired of people judging with no understanding.” Same-sex marriage has been legal in South Africa since 2006. Florida Gay Student Wins Suit Over Anti-Bullying T-Shirt

A federal court in Fort Myers, Florida ruled in favor of a female student who sued the Desoto County School District Board of Education and three school officials after they allegedly prevented her from organizing and participating in a National Day of Silence honoring LGBT students who face bullying and harassment, the Courthouse News reports. Amber Hatcher, an openly lesbian 16-yearold, filed a lawsuit on Feb. 26 against the DeSoto County High School arguing the school interfered with her First Amendment rights when they suspended her last year. In the lawsuit, Hatcher said she was wearing a t-shirt with the message “DOS April 20, 2012: Shhhhh” and communicated with peers and teachers by dry erase board. DOS is the abbreviation for “Day of Silence,” a national day of observance that takes place every year since 1996 to to protest the bullying and harassment of LGBT teens. The event was started by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and takes place every April.

After repeated warnings from school administrators and a rotund disapproval from DeSoto County School Superintendent Adrian Cline, Hatcher decided to wear the t-shirt and proceed with her plan to protest last year. She was suspended from school later that day. “DeSoto County Schools is practicing the very kind of harassment and discrimination the Day of Silence is designed to address in schools,” Eliza Byard, GLSEN’s executive director, said in a statement. Desoto County High School principal Shannon Fusco said Hatcher was punished because of her protest activities. Fusco and the school board moved to dismiss the case, but U.S. District Judge John Steele preserved most of Hatcher’s claims on April 5, 2013 for trial. “At least some of these proposed activities were well within the First Amendment and required no approval by any school official,” Steele wrote in his ruling. Hatcher’s request for an injunction to prevent her school from repeating its actions again this year was denied.

AIDS Walk Miami Celebrates 25 Years of Activism

Christiana Lilly

christiana.lilly@gmail.com

This weekend marks a special anniversary in the fight against AIDS in Miami. For the last 25 years, AIDS Walk Miami has raised money for Care Resource, the oldest and largest HIV/AIDS community organization in the region. The walk on April 28 in Miami Beach is a celebration of a legacy of activism and community partnership. “We have a tradition of running HIV awareness and fundraising campaigns since the very beginning of the epidemic,” said Joe DePiro, marketing and public relations manager at Care Resource. Each year, the walk draws about 2,500 people from across the country and some even from outside the U.S. This year, the 3.1-mile walk starting at the Miami Beach Convention Center will include “flamingoes” that participants can pick up along the way to later use in a raffle. After the walk, there will be music by MTV Latin America, vendors and food at the Botanical Gardens. Most importantly, there will be rapid HIV testing sites where one can find out their status in a private setting in less than 30 minutes.

Meet the Grand Marshal: Dr. Robert Gallo

With Miami and Fort Lauderdale ranking as the top two cities in the nation for new HIV infections per capital, the walk is especially important. With the AIDS epidemic seeming to be a problem from another generation as well as medical advancements making AIDS a lifelong illness rather than a death sentence, people have become lax. However, an AIDS patient could spend up to $600,000 in medical costs in their lifetime. “The infection rates here are high but there’s two things we can do to bring that down and alleviate it, and the first one is everybody needs to know their status — plain and simple,” DePiro said. “The second part of it is if you’re HIV-positive… get into treatment early. As soon as you find out, get into treatment.” For 30 years, Dr. Robert Gallo was the head of the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology at the National Institutes of “It will bring the numbers down until a Health’s National Cancer Institute. Is the Lady in the Muscle Car a Good Lawyer? It fascinates me how many kinds and colors of cars I see on the road today. I don’t know their makes and models unless I get close enough to see the names or logos on the back. But, I’m taken with the variety of bodies. If you imagine all of those different cars pulling into a parking lot, and all of the drivers exiting to a building, you’d never know who went with what car body, and you wouldn’t judge the drivers’ skills at lawyering, accounting, or information technology by the model or color of the cars they drove. And yet, we often make decisions about a person’s skills by looking at the design and the color of the body they move around in. Not only do we make personal and professional decisions about others based upon the age, structure, and color of their bodies, but also as to whether their bodies behave in the way we think the designer intended. “That’s a Corvette muscle car. Drive it faster and with more aggression.” “That’s a pink VW Beetle. Slow down.” “You’re a man. I expect more of you.” “You’re a woman. Should I expect a pregnancy leave?” Boys and girls are models for which we imagine we know the designer’s intentions. When the bodies don’t comply with our expectations, we make decisions

about their true worth. The new focus of our civil rights battle is the discrimination faced by anyone whose gender expression is diverse. You may be thinking I’m talking about transgender people. But, the “T” in LGBT actually stands for all of us, gay and straight, who aren’t “manly” men or “girly” women. If you think about it, bullying of nonconforming gay and straight kids has the same scarring effects, and is not different from the discrimination experienced by people who identify as transgender. A sissy is a sissy is a sissy. But that says nothing about his skills as a doctor. A college fraternity brother of mine was one of the most effeminate men I’d ever met. He was as affected as every campy gay character on television today. People used to pull me aside and whisper, “You’re friend is a fag.” But, he’s straight. I suspect that he has suffered social disapproval and discrimination similar to that I’ve faced in my life. Most gay men experienced discrimination in school, not because their peers imagined them engaging in sex with other boys, but because they didn’t act in a “manly” way. They cried. They couldn’t catch a baseball or football, or hit the backboard with the

basketball. They played with the girls. That’s transgender behavior because it is outside of the box of what is expected for a boy. The word “trans” means across. When a boy cries or is not athletic, his behavior moves away from “male.” Straight boys and gay boys can both be a part of the big T. The majority of gay and straight men say they don’t understand the transgender issue. They want to be supportive of the caboose at the end of the acronym, but they don’t get why anyone would want to have his penis cut off, or to dress up in women’s clothes, except on Halloween or at Mass. Many lesbians have no use for male-tofemale transsexuals, and some are outright hostile to transsexual women who want to attend “women only” events, or participate in women’s sports. Some lesbians see crossdressing men as offensive in their caricature apparel of wigs, lipstick, fake eyelashes, nylons, long dresses, and jewelry. All of those items, they say, have been worn by women to please men, and are thus symbols of the patriarchy. A dress doesn’t make a man into a woman, they insist. Nor does having a vulva. But, many lesbians are transgender too. They’re too good at sports to be girls. They shun traditional “girly” attire. When they get married as lesbians, one of them is often in a tuxedo, like a groom. Many lesbians love to watch men play professional sports. Some eschew cooking anything but basic food. Those are examples of gender expression deviance or diversity. As soon as a girl or woman engages in the roles of men, or dresses in the clothes of men, she is in movement away from cultural expectations of her biological sex. That’s transgender. The phrase “gender expression diversity” is a much bigger, and more accurate, umbrella expression than is the word “transgender.” Using the broader term frees us to focus attention on the real problem at work. If corporations and other entities only focus attention on providing health care coverage for transsexual medical procedures, and on which bathroom a “T” should use, instead of on the

organizations’ strict adherence to traditional gender expression among all of their employees, they’re not dealing with the bigger and far more significant business issue. Will a straight man with limp wrists and a lisp be considered for hiring or promotion? Will a straight woman with a deep voice, mannish clothes, and well-developed biceps be seen as the best person to speak for the team to the client? He’s supposed to be a Corvette muscle car. She’s supposed to be a pink VW Beetle. But how much does the car we drive tell others about the skills we have, and the business we’ll attract? What do our bodies have to do with our skills? Gender expression diversity is the underlying theme of most workplace discrimination, and the primary source of the loss of productivity, retention, and sales. It is a systemic assumption that a car and its driver are the same, and that we know best about the intention of the designer of the vehicle. I am not my car, and I am not my body. My HIV Diary HIV and Youth

After everything that happened in the past, how are young people not paying attention? 12,000 people between the ages of 13 and 24 are infected with HIV every year Photo courtesy of Elvert Barnes

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 32

(April 5 to April 10) If I’ve gotten one email saying that a person can’t believe that a 25-year-old is living with HIV, I’ve gotten a million of them. I have to admit, I wasn’t that surprised when I was told I was HIV positive. I mean, I worked in porn and yeah, I was a bit of a slut. The fact still remains, when I was infected, I was highly uneducated on what HIV is and how it works. Dan Dias, is 30 years old and the co-chair generationCURE. GenerationCURE is an organization of young people dedicated to helping amfAR accelerate its search for a cure for HIV/AIDS by grooming the next, and hopefully the last, generation of HIV/AIDS advocates. Dias wants to see a cure and AIDS free generation but can’t do it alone “I had a lot of friends that became infected,” Dias told SFGN. ”I thought to

myself, ‘how are they still being infected?’.” I can relate to that. After everything that happened in the past, how are young people not paying attention? 12,000 people between the ages of 13 and 24 are infected with HIV every year – that’s 1,000 a month. Over 72,000 young people are living with HIV right now. “We need to make them more aware,” Dias said. “We need to get people to help fight, to end AIDS in our generation.” How does that happen? By education and raising funds, according to Dias. One of his favorite tools is talks that people can attend with a scientist working in the HIV field. It’s a chance to see and learn first had what HIV is doing and how we are combating it. “We want to focus on the science behind HIV and find a cure,” Dias said. “But of course what’s going to help is prevention.” Prevention isn’t just wearing a condom or not sharing needles. Prevention is having an open and honest discussion with your community and sexual partners about HIV and all STDs. “This is still a pandemic, there are still people being infected,” Dias said. “This virus is still growing and I fear there is a level of complacency.” He’s right. HIV isn’t a death sentence, but it is a life sentence. Use a condom. Know your status and be honest about it. Spread the word not the virus.

Two Gay Men With an Agenda Launch Online HIM-Magazine David Griffiths and Alex Vaughn Partner on their own vision Norm Kent

// 4.17.2013 // SFGN.com //

HIM is not bar or boy-centric. Links on their site take you to a plethora of options, including fashion, lifestyle, fitness, health, leisure, business, arts, spirituality, and even editorials. Many of those articles are authored by Alex Vaughn, who is London based and worked with Griffiths at the Florida Agenda for a year. Vaughn brings to the table a history of experience in public relations as well as fashion and design writing in Europe. He too has just fulfilled a dream of his own. His first book was published. He co-wrote “Beyond Face Value,” a revealing story of a transgender activist, the memoirs of

ones dealing with these issues, and that there are ways to overcome some of these obstacles.” The Griffiths’ mantra is that “As gay men, we are often told that we’re not good enough, but in reality, we are fabulous! We should never allow anyone to put us down or make us feel like we’re not worthy of the same kind of love anyone else can enjoy.” HIM Magazine online is attempting to lend credibility to Griffiths’ vision. Since its inception, it has grown to more than 10,000 visitors each month from all over the world. When the magazine began, they published about 12 to 15 new features each month. A year later, they have doubled that, and

last September and drew 1,200 visitors within 24 hours. Last fall, their ‘Be Unique’ issue featured a Vaughn interview with world-renowned artist, Romero Britto. They are limited only by the boundaries of their imagination. Each month, Griffith and Vaughn bring to HIM magazine something they could never get working for a paper or magazine controlled by others. They bring their heart, soul, and independent vision to a product that is all their own; that no one can ever take away from them. Humbled and grateful for his achievements so far, Griffiths said “every single issue has been a labor of love for us, and we are so thankful to our many contributors- these great people, some of whom I have never even met in person, but

My grandmother used to say “cast your bread upon the waters and it shall come back sandwiches.” -Alex Vaughn

Rajindra Narinesingh. Griffiths designed the cover of the book. Vaughn said of the project “I knew it was important for her to tell her story, I just didn’t realize before I was in the middle of the project how important it would be for me. I learned so much in the process, not to mention a renewed appreciation for life and for the fortunate blessings I have.” Of the magazine, Griffiths is excited by its unique approach to sensitive issues not typically covered in the mainstream media: “Alex and I have formed a wonderful partnership, even if on different continents, across the pond from each other. We are touching on some of the community’s biggest issues and insecurities and hopefully, we’re able to show others that they’re not the only soflagaynews //

expect to grow with even more contributors this year. “We are also interactive, so on our site you can find videos, music, and other interactive features that you cannot get in print, even monthly dance remixes,” Griffith adds. Ultimately, HIM hopes to become an ecofriendly entertainment portal for the gay community- available on any computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone. As to sustaining the site on a long term basis, Griffiths says the online portal will be true to its advertisers, since “they can be assured that we know all the stats for our pages and we can tell them just who their advertising will reach and how many people have looked at and clicked on their banners.” The ‘Being Butch’ issue went online

One day you have an agenda to meet the boss’s needs, and the next day you have an agenda to fulfill your own dream. Such is the story of both Dave Griffiths and Alex Vaughn, two gay writers and designers that have created the emerging online LGBT monthly, HIM Magazine. “Our goal is to showcase a different side of the gay community; one that is not bar-centric,” Publisher Dave Griffiths said. “HIM Magazine has features on topics such as fashion, entertainment, fitness, health, business, politics, as well as editorials from our diverse group of contributors.” Griffith brings to the table experience as a graphic designer who was once the Associate Publisher of the Express Gay News in Wilton Manors. More recently, he was designing and writing for the Florida Agenda. But there is nothing like becoming your own boss, and liberating yourself to achieve your own dream. “HIM” “is an anagram,” Griffith notes, stating that it stands “For the Man Who Invests In Himself!” He adds that the magazine has “everything from Manscaping to Landscaping” in its issues. The magazine celebrated its first anniversary in January, its history populated by unique monthly themes from ‘Leather Brotherhood’ to ‘Being Butch,’ to this month’s ‘Bear’ issue. In its first year, there were also themes of ‘Letting Go,’ ‘Your Fears,’ and the ‘New You.’ All the archives are online www.himmagazine.com. The site is populated with many features on local personalities, including Keith Blackburn from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Terry De Carlo of Broward House and Glen Weinzimer, founder of the Smart Ride. Local photographer Steven Shires took many of the photos, including monthly lifestyle shoots of adult film stars such as Cameron Kincade and Christian Matthews. The website was redesigned by a local graphic artist, Ed Garcia, who works at the Pride Center. HIM Magazine has sponsored the Winter Party Festival, The SMART Ride, Bike It For Life, Beach Bear Weekend, One Magical Weekend, along with Broward House events. From the online world, they have promoted real world non-profits.

who have all stepped up and helped make my dream a reality.” “David and I just decided to invest in ourselves,” Vaughn said. “We just started rubbing both our pennies together to build HIM Magazine from scratch. We had worked so well together at the Agenda and Mark magazine, we knew we could learn so much from each other, and build a magazine that was demographically inclusive and socially valuable.” Griffiths, recognizing such an undertaking is not one he could have done alone, also left room to thank his partner, Ken Eunice, “the most supportive man I have ever been withwho continues to make sure that I know, even when I am feeling overwhelmed, that I can do it.”

#ThisIsWhatALesbianLooksLike SFGN Staff

For our photo campaign during the month of March we revisited an earlier SFGN campaign #ThisIsWhatALesbianLooksLike, in honor of Women’s History Month. This photo campaign was launched last year in response to former Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll’s comments: “Black women that look like me don’t engage in relationships like that.” She said those now infamous words after a staffer working under Carroll opened her boss’ door and allegedly found the politician in a compromising position with her travel aide. Carroll’s comments inspired Atlanta-based lesbian artist Doria Roberts to start the Twitter hashtag #ThisIsWhatALesbianLooksLike. This is SFGN’s second photo campaign. The first one, #LoveWins, kicked off the series in February, and asked couples to submit photos of themselves. To check out February’s campaign visit Facebook.com/ SouthFloridaGayNews Throughout the month of April we’re asking readers to submit to us what they love about being gay for our #GayAboutGay campaign. It could be the sex, the friendships, the music, whatever! Send your photos, or words to our Editor in Chief Gideon Grudo at Gideon.Grudo@sfgn.com. Make sure to use the hashtag #GayAboutGay.

A Weekend at Vitambi Springs Jesse Monteagudo

The State of Florida is blessed with several year-round, gay or gay-friendly camp grounds: Sawmill in Dade City, Camp David in Inverness and Camp Mars in Venus, among others. Add to the list Vitambi Springs (vitambi. com), a members only, all male, year-round wilderness camp and resort near Clewiston (82 miles from Fort Lauderdale). Before business partners Steve McCloud and Martin Ruddock bought the land, it served as a camp for wayward boys, among other things. The partners, McCloud said, “set out several years ago to find a suitable camp/ resort to better meet the needs of South Florida’s gay population. The gay community should have a place with good food and good drink in a natural secluded location that allowed us to be us. We all need a nearby escape and a place to meet like-minded friends and make new friends. Traditional gay bars, restaurants and gathering spots are not always the best for meeting new people, quiet conversation, star gazing, long walks holding hands and the chance to cuddle in a cabin in the woods. We wanted to create a country club setting and an overnight option away from home.” Ruddock and McCloud named their park Vitambi, a Swahili word meaning “pride.” McCloud described Vitambi Springs as a “private members only, gated, 21 and over, all male, year-round resort camp set on 269 tropical forest acres below Florida’s frostline.” Among Vitambi’s more popular amenities are the Bongo Bar, the Bolo Cafe and the Garden Quarter pool area. Accommodations

20

range from secluded tent sites to cabins, the Barracks bunk house and the lush Pine Tree Inn. And while “connections for RVs and trailers are currently not available, a plan to provide temporary RV and Trailer accommodations is currently underway.” Women are not allowed at Vitambi Springs, though plans are currently being made for future “mixed” events. On the other hand, pets are welcome, as long as they are well behaved and kept on a leash. Membership in this private club is required for everyone, even for holders of day passes. Vitambi Springs is a work in progress, which is why it hasn’t had a grand opening yet. “Sometimes I remind people that we are just a few good guys with great ideas. Sure this would have been much easier if we were a Hyatt or a project with major financial backing, but we all know there is a loss of vision in that route. We have slowly moved this project forward with the help of great friends, volunteers and a small underpaid staff,” McCloud said. This year a swimming pool finally opened at the Garden Quarter, along with a spacious modern shower house and a Myst Room. Long-term plans include a larger resortstyle pool near the Lodge and Wood Shed area. Fortunately, unlike other gay resorts in Florida, Vitambi Springs has not had any trouble with the nearby community. Like other gay resorts, Vitambi Springs has a clothing-optional policy. Though clothes are required in all public buildings and designated areas (the North Loop); the Garden Quarter and campgrounds (the soflagaynews //

South Loop) are clothing-optional. During special N-VS weekends, nudity is permitted everywhere in the park except inside the Big Oak Lodge (which houses Registration, Bolo Cafe, Bongo Bar, Safari Outfitters General Store and administrative offices). Not surprisingly, Vitambi Springs is very much a part of the gay nudist or naturist movement. As McCloud tells me, “Vitambi Springs is very proud of their connection with Gay Naturist International (GNI). We support their goals and ideals and are very happy to play a part in bringing their members together and assist in anyway in helping them gain new members. The same is true for other nudist groups that have participated in activities here such as Tamiami Area Nudists, the Gold Coast Bare Skins and Wildfyre.” Like other LGBT social groups, Vitambi loves acronyms. According to McCloud, N-VS - pronounced “envious” – “was a name we decided on to note any of our weekends that have an expanded clothing optional policy. N-VS - Naturist Vitambi Springs - has developed a following with guests looking for those weekends by name. NUDgE - Nude Devil’s Garden Enthusiasts - is our own inhouse nudist group. (Devil’s Garden is a folklore name of the area that surrounds Vitambi Springs.) Neil Sweeney oversees activities for this group and has put together several events; the most popular being the Boots ‘n’ Buns hike and the late-night fullMOON hike.” I attended the most recent N-VS Naturist Weekend, “Spring Breeze,” held on Easter

SouthFloridaGayNews

Weekend. My friend Ron and I made camp at Robur Woods, a primitive campground within walking distance of the Garden Quarter. Along with our friends Dan, Steve, Sal, Benson, Seth and others (almost 100 in all), we took part in a weekend full of activities, nudist or otherwise. Among the bareass activities we took part in - often led by the always-delightful Sweeney - were the Boots ‘n’ Buns wilderness hike, burgers and brews by the pool, wine tasting, Easter egg hunt, introductory yoga class at the Gym, and a bonfire drum circle. Needless to say, by the end of the weekend I was exhausted. Vitambi plans to hold its next N-VS Naturist Weekend, “Taboo”, on June 7-9. But those who are not nudists will still find much to enjoy at Vitambi Springs. Future weekend events include Earth Day (April 19-21), Lumberjock II (April 26-28), Hombre Latino weekend (May 3-5), Hot Ash-Commando (May 17-19), Labyrinth Yoga Retreat (May 31June 2), leather and bear weekends. But this is just the beginning for Vitambi Springs. According to McCloud, “we would very much like to develop programs and housing opportunities on this large property that can help to meet the needs of the aging gay community. It is an issue close to our hearts. We continue to look for funding that could make this dream a reality. The acreage and amenities here can provide the perfect setting for many forward-thinking ideas.” Vitambi Springs Resort & Camp is located at 28280 Etumakee Way, Clewiston, FL 33440. For more information, phone 863-983-8488 or email info@vitambi.com.

Audre Lorde / Author

Federico Garcia Lorca / Poet

2/18/1934 - 11/17/1992

6/5/1898 - 3/19/1936

“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”

“To burn with desire and keep quiet about it is the greatest punishment we can bring on ourselves.”

A self-proclaimed “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated her life to combating social injustice. She helped found Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, the world’s first publishing company run by women of color. She began writing poetry at 12 and published her first poem in Seventeen magazine at age fifteen. In 1954, Lorde attended the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where she solidified her identity as both a poet and a lesbian. She entered the Greenwich Village gay scene in 1955. Lorde worked as a librarian while continuing to write and publish poetry. In 1962, she married Edwin Rollins. The couple had two children before their marriage dissolved. Much of Lorde’s poetry written during these years explores themes of motherhood and love’s impermanence. In 1968, Lorde received a National Endowment for the Arts grant and published her first volume of poetry, “The First Cities” as a poet-in-residence at Tougaloo College in Mississippi. She began a romantic relationship with Frances Clayton that same year that would last until Lorde’s death in 1992. Rich with introspection, Lorde’s work contains extensive sociopolitical commentary. As a lesbian woman of color Lorde asserted, “I have a duty to speak the truth as I see it and to share not just my triumphs, not just the things that felt good, but the pain, the intense, often unmitigating pain.” Lorde explored her long battle with cancer in her last work, “The Cancer Journals” (1980). In an African naming ceremony shortly before her death, Lorde took the name Gamba Adisa: “Warrior: She Who Makes Her Meaning Known.”

Federico Garcia Lorca was a celebrated Spanish poet and dramatist. He is internationally recognized as one of the most important poets of the 20th century. Born in Grenada, Lorca was the son of a wealthy farmer and a pianist. He attended the University of Grenada to study law, but soon abandoned his studies to pursue poetry and theater. In 1919, Lorca moved to Madrid, where he organized local theatrical performances and read his poetry in public squares. He wrote “The Butterfly’s Evil Spell” (1920), “Book of Poems” (1921) and “Gypsy Ballads” (1928), which garnered him international fame. Lorca became associated with a group of artists known as Generation 27, which included filmmaker Louis Bunuel and artist Salvador Dali. In 1929, Lorca moved to New York City to study English at Columbia University. The experience inspired him to write “Poet in New York,” which was published posthumously. The book explores the oppression of minorities, a common theme in his works. Lorca returned to Spain during a period of political turmoil. He founded a theater company and wrote the well-known tragedies “Blood Wedding” (1933), “Yerma” (1934) and “The House of Bernarda Alba” (1936). Spain’s traditional Catholicism caused Lorca to conceal his sexual orientation. While he never used the word homosexual, many of his poems speak of his “secret desires.” Shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Lorca was arrested by right-wing nationalists because of his outspoken liberal views. Two days later, he was murdered. His books were publicly burned in Grenada’s Plaza del Carmen and his works were banned in Spain. Controversy still surrounds the details of and motives for his death.

Jalal al-Din Rumi / Sufi Mystic/Poet 9/30/1207 - 12/17/1273 “Only from the heart can you touch the sky.”

Jalal al-Din Rumi was a poet, theologian and Sufi mystic. He founded the Order of the Whirling Dervishes, a branch of the Sufi tradition that practicies a gyrating dance ritual representing the revolving stages of life. Rumi was born in the Persian province of Balkh, now part of Afghanistan. Rumi’s father was an author, a religious scholar and a leader in the Sufi movement— the mystical dimension of Islam. When Rumi was 12, his father moved the family to escape the impending invasion of Mongol armies, eventually setting in Konya, Anatolia, the westernmost tip of Asia where Turkey is today. In 1231, after his father died, Rumi began teaching, meditating and helping the poor. He amassed hundreds of disciples who attended his lectures and sermons. Rumi was married and had one son. After his wife’s death, he remarried and fathered two more children. In 1244, Rumi met a man who changed his life. Shams of Tabriz was an older Sufi master who became Rumi’s spiritual mentor and constant companion. After Shams died, Rumi grieved for years. He began expressing his love and bereavement in poetry, music and dance. Rumi had two other male companions, but none would replace his beloved Shams. One of Rumi’s major poetic works is named in honor of his master, “The Works of Shams of Tabriz.” Rumi’s best-known work is “Spiritual Couplets,” a six-volume poem often referred to as the greatest work of mystical poetry. In “Rumi: The Book of Love Poems of Ecstasy and Longing” (2003), Rumi expresses his perception of true love. “Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.” Rumi died surrounded by his family and disciples. His tomb is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Islam and is a spiritual center of Turkey.
