Radio Station Could Ban Rapper Macklemore The station is asking listeners whether they should stop airing the pro-gay song A California radio station has gotten a written complaint for pushing gay rights onto its listeners by airing rapper Macklemore’s song, “Same Love.” Station 98.7FM was sent a letter condemning homosexuality and branding the song “offensive” because its lyrics talk about marriage equality. The song, which is part of
Macklemore’s latest album, The Heist, features lyrics like “the right wing conservatives think it’s a decision, and you can be cured with some treatment and religion.” Radio host Darren Rose posted the letter on the station’s website on April 15 and asked listeners to weigh in on the issue; as of publication the letter has 115
comments. The station said it might consider banning the song. “The imagery the song talks about is a raw subject a great multitude of people have a hard time dealing with when we know homosexuality is wrong, but have friends and loved ones who are indeed in same-sex relations,” part of the letter reads.

Spouses of gay American citizens won’t be able to apply for visas under the bill A bipartisan Senate group that drafted an immigration overhaul bill that would affect millions of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. has left out a provision granting spouses of gay American citizens visas to live in the country. The Washington Post reports that Senate Democrats could not come to an agreement with the
four Republicans conforming the bipartisan group. According to the Los Angeles Times, the bill, named the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 was filed on April 17 at 2 a.m. After the bill goes through the committees, it could reach the full Senate floor in May. About 40,000 foreign partners
of gay American citizens won’t be able to benefit from the law. President Obama had said he wanted to include same-sex international couples in the plan. Currently, laws do not allow for foreign-born, same-sex partners of Americans to request a green card or permanent residency on the basis of their relationship because of DOMA.

When we tried to start a club to fight the anti-gay bullying, I’m glad that I had a lot of support from my family and friends and people all over the country to convince the school that this issue matters,” the bisexual teenager said. “But not all kids have that support, so I’m glad this bill is being filed to make sure kids all over the country are protected.” For her part, Ros-Lehtinen, whose son Rodrigo is a transgender man, said she hopes the bill will help put an end to bullying. “Schools should be places where our kids can learn and thrive, and that are free from persecution and harassment,” she said. “LGBT students are often verbally harassed due to their sexual orientation. It is important that we strive to make sure that LGBT students enjoy safety as all children do.” Earlier this month, a federal court in Fort Myers, Florida ruled in favor of a female student who sued the Desoto County School District Board of Education and three school officials after they allegedly prevented her from organizing and participating in DOS last year.

Just in time for National Day of Silence (today), Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Colorado Democrat Jared Polis have reintroduced a bill that would prohibit discrimination against sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools nationwide. The legislators announced they introduced the bill, named the Student NonDiscrimination Act, on April 18, one day before National Day of Silence. DOS is a national day of observance that’s taken place every year since 1996 to protest the bullying and harassment of LGBT teens. The event was started by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and takes place every April. If passed, the bill would also forbid schools from discriminating against LGBT students or ignoring harassing behavior. “Bullying is a leading cause of poor attendance and dropping out because kids don’t feel safe enough to go to school,” Rep. Polis said in a statement. “My legislation puts LGBT students on an equal footing with their peers, so they can attend school and receive a quality education, free from fear.” The politicians announced 118 cosponsors from both parties for the bill. If passed, it will provide for students like Bayli Silberstein, who faced opposition from faculty and staff at Carver Middle School, in

It’s unfair that someone who cared so much about her students and her job should lose them on the basis of something she cannot even control.” Hale told the Dispatch she has been overwhelmed by the love and support from her students and friends. “It’s amazing that they’ve come together and rallied around this situation,” she said. “I’m in awe of them.” The Dispatch wrote that according to a contract between the Columbus diocese and the Central Ohio Association of Catholic Educators, teachers can be terminated for “immorality” or “serious unethical conduct.”
Popular Gay DJ Peter Rauhofer Diagnosed with Brain Tumor
Peter Rauhofer is best known for making headlines with his pulsating music at gay parties around the world, but on April 18 Rauhofer’s manager, Angelo Russo, announced on Rauhofer’s Facebook page that the Grammy Award-winning DJ has a “large brain tumor” that has “gone undiagnosed for quite some time.” Russo wrote the tumor was discovered after Rauhofer was rushed to an emergency room after suffering a seizure. Russo went on to say the Rauhofer’s family is working with neurologists to determine the best course of action and treatment options. Miami-based promoter and manager Ryan Work met Rauhofer in 2008 and since then has worked with him quite a bit. He said Rauhofer inspired him to get into the management and promotion business. When he heard the news of Rauhofer’s brain tumor, he told SFGN he was simply “devastated.” “The man had such an impact in my life,” Work said. “He gave me the desire to be a promoter.” Work said the drive Rauhofer, who has played many South Florida venues including the Manor in Wilton Manors, transmitted to him on and off the dance floor is what led Work to get closer to people in the industry, eventually leading the way for Work to promote his own events. “I decided to set out and manage DJ’s,” Work said. “He directly and indirectly in a lot of ways really changed my life.” Work calls Rauhofer’s illness a huge blow for all the people inside of music, but wishes his friend a fast and full recovery. “Many of our most magical memories happened on his dance floor,” Work said.

What is COMPLERA? COMPLERA is a prescription HIV medicine that is used as a complete regimen to treat HIV-1 in adults who have never taken HIV medicines before and who have an amount of HIV in their blood (this is called “viral load”) that is no more than 100,000 copies/mL. COMPLERA contains 3 medicines – rilpivirine, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. It is not known if COMPLERA is safe and effective in children under the age of 18 years. ®
COMPLERA® does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses you must keep taking COMPLERA. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 to others: always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids; never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them, do not share personal items that may contain bodily fluids. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information you should know about COMPLERA? COMPLERA® can cause serious side effects: • Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include feeling very weak or tired, unusual (not normal) muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nausea or vomiting, feeling cold, especially in your arms and legs, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or a fast or irregular heartbeat. • Serious liver problems. The liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and fatty (steatosis). Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice), dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored bowel movements (stools), loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach pain. • You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking COMPLERA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and stop taking COMPLERA, your hepatitis may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking COMPLERA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health. COMPLERA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

‘Til Death
The families of Kevin Powell and Steve Adams still waiting for answers
Christiana Lilly
christiana.lilly@gmail.com
Marci Craig waited anxiously at the airport in Ohio to pick up her older brother Steve for Christmas, but he never got off the plane. Wondering if there was a car accident, Craig and her sister called the police to find out if Steve and his partner, Kevin Powell, even got on the plane in the first place. They hadn’t. No one answered any phone calls at home, and Craig gave the Wilton Manors police authority to break into the couple’s home, where the lights were on, but the shades were drawn, and the doors were locked. In the wee hours of the morning of Dec. 26, 2010, police discovered the couple’s bodies in their home, dead from gunshot wounds and head trauma. “We were just devastated,” Craig said. “By 8 a.m., we were on a flight to Fort Lauderdale and it felt like forever to get down there.” More than two years later, an arrest has been made, their home was put up for sale, and their names have dropped off from the newspapers. “It’s in the prosecutor’s hands now,” Vicki Thompson, Powell’s mother, told SFGN, not wanting to comment further on the case. But the story of these two men who loved each other until the day their lives were taken began decades before. Steve Adams, 52 at his death, was born in Michigan and grew up in Ohio as the oldest of four children. Craig said her brother was a good listener and known for putting himself before others – making nursing a perfect profession for him. When his partner of 29 years, Kevin Powell, had a kidney and pancreas transplant six months before his murder, Adams nursed him to health. “He took care of people he didn’t even know,” Craig said. “That was just his nature as a nurse. When Kevin had his transplant, Steve was off work that whole time and stayed by his side.” Powell was born when his mother was a teenager, and he was adopted by a minister and his wife in Wyoming. With an eye for design, he worked in interior design and creating storefront displays. At 18, he met Adams at a gay pride parade in Ohio – the two were together until their lives were taken from them almost 30 years later. “I always thought they got along really well and they seemed always happy and that’s all I wanted, was for my brother to be happy and so we were happy for them,” Craig said. Suffering from diabetes since his childhood, Powell became interested in his

biological family to find out more about his disease. It was an endeavor since the adoption papers were closed, but while fidgeting with his old baby bracelet, the nametag slipped out and he discovered his mother’s maiden name on the back. He got in touch with his biological family, living in Claxton, Ga., and met them for lunch in Jacksonville, Fla. Shannon Kicklighter, his younger biological brother, remembers knowing it was him instantly because he looked just like his older brother, Anthony. He was also pleasantly surprised to find out his long-lost brother was gay, just like him. “To have a birth brother not brought up together and to be gay, it was very symbolic for our family and thank God my mother and father brought us up to be very open,” Kicklighter said. That Christmas, Powell and Adams invited the Kicklighters to their home in Ohio. From there, Kicklighter wound up living with them for five years. In his early 20s and just out of a bad relationship, he says he was able to bond with his brother and learn how to be in a healthy gay relationship. “They were very good at communicating,” he said. “They were just really kindhearted, always getting involved with helping people.” Kicklighter eventually moved to Florida and met his partner, Chris. Adams and Powell followed soon after. Shortly before the couple’s death, Powell posted a strange Facebook profile picture, where he appeared to have bruises on his face – something out of character for the normally well-groomed man. Kicklighter also noted he misspelled his sibling’s names on his page. Then came Christmas Eve, the day police believe that the couple was killed. Craig and her sister waited for Adams at the airport the next day, not knowing he was never coming. Their bodies were found the morning of Dec. 26 and police noted that their vehicle was missing. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested Peter Avsenew, then 26, in Dundee County, Florida, for a violation of probation he had committed while in Monroe County. The next day, they executed a search warrant at his home for the Wilton Manors murder. According to the Sun Sentinel, Avsenew told his mother that he “had done something really bad,” and “they got what they deserved.” He also said he threw a gun into a lake. soflagaynews //
Avsenew now sits in Broward County Jail on two counts of murder, two counts of robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, credit card fraud, and grand theft auto. The trial date is now set for June of 2013, but the Adams, Powells and Kicklighters have grown accustomed to that date being postponed over and over again. State Attorney prosecutor Shari Tate told SFGN that it’s not abnormal for a case like this to take even three or four years. But according to Robert Wills, one of the public defenders assigned to the case, it has taken so long because the defense asked for but has not received all the information they are entitled to. For example, they asked for the victims’ computer hard drives to be turned over to them in October of 2011, and just received the evidence two weeks ago. Wills said since the Shannon Kicklighter is the biological brother of Kevin Powell, and has moved victims met the defendant to Fort Lauderdale to be closer to the ongoing case. over the Internet, they Photo courtesy of Shannon Kicklighter want to see what other set, they want to be ready to go. In light of the bombing at the Boston Marathon on April 15, there will be more safety measures in place at the AIDS Walk Miami. Miami Beach Police told SFGN that there will be more police officers on duty as well as other safety precautions that can’t be released. “We know there’s a lot of participants who are concerned,” Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez said. “We want to provide a safer venue but we also want to make the participants feel safe with the increased police presence.” The 3.1-mile walk, starting at the Miami Beach Convention Center, draws a few thousand people every year with the goal to raise funds for Care Resource, the largest HIV/AIDS nonprofit in South Florida.

After the bombing, which at press time killed three and injured more than 170 people, the foundation asked to sit down with the police department to discuss security and safety at the event. “We understand that fear cannot control the lives of major cities, so we just need to be prepared. We want to make sure all participants are safe,” Joe DePiro, public relations and marketing manager, said. The Miami Corporate Run on April 25, which draws about 25,000 participants, will also have extra security. DePiro requested that if an officer asks to search any participants that they please comply. “After Monday’s events in Boston, we have to be careful and vigilant,” he added.

They were especially outraged at these passages from Kent: “Therefore, seeing him on the cover of our newspaper a few weeks ago made my partner and me puke.” “Both of us went ballistic that Lambert was on our cover. Other than feature new makeup every day, what has this kid done to warrant a cover story?” “…and the story that takes down our website is Adam Lambert’s breakup with his boyfriend? This is unreal. How shallow have we become?” “Give me a break. This award is presented to whoever can fill the seats and make money for GLAAD at its annual fundraising dinner.” The editorial spawned a rebuttal defending Adam Lambert from Associate

Lies we tell ourselves
It was just another night, meeting some friends for a few drinks at a local club. A guy looks at me. I look at him. I keep talking to my friends. Turns out that the guy and me share a common friend. So we start talking. We trade numbers. Days go by texting. We seem to have a lot in common. We decide to get together to watch a movie at my place. The movie starts. Our hands wander. I don’t remember what movie it was. You get my point. Since I met him through a common friend, I have a sense of comfort. I convince myself that I don’t need to ask him about his status, nor do I need to wear protection. And I tell myself, “After all, he looks OK.” The story repeats itself four more What happens next isn’t talked about that often, but maybe it times. Up to this point you may be able has happened to you. — Jose Javier. Photo courtesy of Enrico to relate to this situation. What happens next isn’t talked After all those HIV testing posters I’ve about that often, but maybe it has seen, and HIV prevention messages printed happened to you. We decided to get HIV tested before taking in magazines, I was kicking myself for things any further. His test result came back drifting into unprotected sex without even HIV-positive, mine HIV-negative… He was in talking about whether that was what each shock as much as I was; he did not hesitate of us had wanted. Maybe if we had talked in telling me his results. When I received the about it, we both would have realized that news, I felt as if it was my result that came even though we both assumed we were HIVback positive. Since I really liked this guy, I negative, past hook ups probably meant was worried for him. I wanted to support we should test first, before thinking about him, and didn’t know how. But I was also taking the condoms off. The agency I went scared personally. My life has changed. Because of this I knew that an HIV test can’t detect antibodies if a person had become infected experience I decided to become a HIV in the week before. So I asked around, and counselor, too. Every day I am learning found my way to a local agency that works in new facts, and helping other guys to protect HIV prevention. The counselors explained themselves and others. I am not looking at to me that the “window period” before my life the same way. Not after this. My HIV Diary Changing Through Leather
Ryan and Dylan West at The Atlanta Eagle during Atlanta Leather Pride. Photo courtesy of Brian Hughes
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 33
(April 11 to April 18) This past weekend I had an amazing time with some amazing people in Atlanta. Most of them were old friends or friends I had made on my first trip there, but this time around I feel like I met a person who put a whole bunch of things into perspective. Depending on how many of my Facebook photos you’ve looked at, you may or may not know that I am an actively participating member of the leather community. Leather people are just one of the many sub groups that are found within the LGBT community, and they are honestly my favorite. One of the people I met this weekend was named Dylan. Besides being a student and a young man out on his own, Dylan is the co-chair of
Team Friendly Atlanta. I was so amazed that someone my age was just as – if not more— passionate about HIV stigma and awareness as he is. I have to admit, I did flirt and when I disclosed my status to him, it was like it was nothing. His simple response of “I play safe” resounded within me, erasing any fears I had about what his perception of me would be. My dating life is often a troubling one. Not only do I have to wonder if a person is going to accept my HIV status, but let’s face it, not many 25 year olds like getting tied up and flogged just for fun. I’ve found the leather community so welcoming and loving, and not just Dylan. He’s just a prime example of what a little bit of education and compassion can do. When I tell someone that I’m positive and all they’re concerned about is if I’m going to bottom for them or not is refreshing. I went to Atlanta to have some fun with leather folk that I don’t often get to see. What I go instead of a single tail whipping was an eye opening experience as to what it really takes to change the world. The perception of HIV isn’t going to change overnight, but when a community bands together like Dylan and Atlanta has, amazing things will happen.

Meet the Seniors
SAGE unveils new data collection guide
Jesse Monteagudo
jessemonteagudo@comcast.net
Social service and health care providers often depend on client data to help them determine what type of services and treatment to provide its clients. Unfortunately, all too-often the needs of LGBT seniors are left out of the groups’ research studies, service intake forms or client notes. This lack of data collection on the part of senior service programs deprive them of the information they need to properly understand and serve LGBT seniors. Nor can they expect elder gays to volunteer the data: If they want the information, they must collect it themselves. On March 14, the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging of SAGE - Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders - published a data collection guide, “Inclusive Questions for Older Adults: A Practical Guide to Collecting Data on Sexual Orientation and

Gender Identity,” to help providers collect the information they need to understand and serve LGBT older adults. According to Hillary Meyer, Director of the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, “We created this guide to meet the specific needs of aging providers who are grappling with how mainstream aging organizations can better collect data on sexual orientation and gender identity. And they want to do so in a way that is culturally competent and respectful. This guide gives them those tools.” In her Introduction to the SAGE Guide, Meyer wrote, “this guide was created to help service providers ask questions about sexual orientation and gender identity in safe and respectful ways.” Here we learn that “incorporating data collection on sexual orientation and gender identity into daily practice can be handled in

a variety of ways.” At the same time the SAGE Guide reminds us that “all providers will need to address confidentiality and privacy concerns when planning for data collection on sexual orientation and gender identity” and that “it is important to remember that sexual orientation and gender identity are two different aspects of an individual and should not be incorporated into one question.” The authors of the SAGE Guide realize that “it is important to remember that incorporating sexual orientation and gender identity into data collection forms and processes will likely be new for both staff and clients. LGBT older adults will be more likely to selfidentify when they believe they are in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.” It considers “an important principle of person-centered care” the fact “that the more providers know about their individual clients, the better service they will be able to provide.” Because of this, “training all staff on how to identify and address the needs of LGBT older people is key to making an agency inclusive… Staff members can benefit from participating in training programs with trusted and credible trainers who will enhance their knowledge and skills about LGBT older adults and their intersecting identifies of race, ethnicity and culture.” In collecting data, senior service organizations must keep in mind the unique needs of LGBT seniors: “LGBT older people are less likely than heterosexual, and/or nontransgender elders to access mainstream aging services and providers, senior centers, meal programs, and other services because they fear discrimination or harassment if their sexual orientations or gender identities become known. . . . By creating a welcoming, safe and LGBT-affirming space — which includes asking demographic questions

about s e x u a l orientation and gender identity — service providers will be better able to provide culturally competent care and encourage honesty and trust so that clients can be their authentic selves. . . . Collecting data on sexual orientation and gender identity from older adults can also help illuminate the nature of health disparities among older people, as well as where funding can be allocated to better reach LGBT elders. . . . Data collection is but one step providers can take to create inclusive and welcoming services.” SAGE’s publication of “Inclusive Questions for LGBT Older Adults: A Practical Guide to Collecting Data on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” has received a favorable response from senior service organizations. According to Meyer, “upon announcing the availability of [the Guide], we received requests for over 1,000 hard copies from service providers across the country to the point where there is now a waiting list. It has also been downloaded over 25,000 times since its release last month. Clearly providers are actively seeking this type of information.” It’s currently available free of charge. What Might Have Been... Trent ‘Junior’ Durkin (1915-1935) David-Elijah Nahmod davidwriter@msn.com
“For God’s sake, let us sit upon the ground and tell sad tales of the deaths of kings.” -----William Shakespeare, Richard II It’s important to honor and remember those who came before us. Trent “Junior” Durkin spent most of his brief life acting on stage and in Hollywood films. In 1928, when he was twelve years old, he was said to be Broadway’s youngest leading man. Less than a decade later, Durkin was killed in a horrifically violent car crash which haunted child star Jackie Coogan, the accident’s lone survivor and Durkin’s best friend, for the rest of his life. Today, few people remember Durkin. One person who remembers him well is the now 94-year-old Diana Serra Cary. Once world famous as the child star Baby Peggy, Cary referred to Durkin’s funeral as “the saddest event I have ever been a part of in my life.” In an interview with SFGN, Cary revealed a few surprising facts about Durkin. Shortly before he died, he was on the verge of major film stardom. In 1934, when she was 16 years old, Cary appeared with Durkin in the play “Growing Pains” at the legendary Pasadena Playhouse. The play became the basis for the Andy Hardy film series, which ultimately starred Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. “If things had worked out differently for Trent, he would very likely have ended up as one of MGM’s biggest stars,” Cary recalled. “Having starred as the lead in the original play, Trent would have had first crack at the part of Andy in the films which later made a huge popular star of Mickey Rooney.” Viewing Durkin’s films today reveals a young actor of enormous depth and presence. In 1930, he portrayed Huckleberry Finn in the first sound film adaptation of Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer. The film, which has been posted in its entirety at YouTube, is a creaky old relic. Few actors took their craft seriously in those days. Most were more interested in being movie stars than in developing a character. And so Durkin’s first appearance, around five minutes into the film, was something of a revelation. His screen presence was intense. He delivered his lines with an impressive dramatic panache. Durkin actually became Huckleberry Finn. That same year Durkin appeared as

Henry, the teenaged son of a wealthy couple in the romantic drama Recaptured Love, which has also been posted at YouTube. The actor is barely recognizable from one film to the other. His voice and body language in Recaptured Love were so different from the work he did in Tom Sawyer, it was as though different actors had played the two roles. Durkin was an actor who played characters. He researched his roles and immersed himself in them. He took his work very seriously. Unlike his contemporaries, he continued to pursue stage work. He felt it was important to keep one foot in the theater and the discipline in taught him. In the daringly homoerotic Hell’s House (1932), one of the few Durkin films to get a DVD release, he played Jimmy Mason. Recently orphaned, Jimmy gets caught up with the wrong crowd and ends up in reform school. There, he becomes fast friends with a sickly boy named Shorty (Junior Coghlan), who calls Jimmy “big boy.” When Shorty’s bad heart begins to give out, Jimmy takes his dying friend in his arms. They weep and nuzzle each other’s faces. After Shorty dies, a tearful Jimmy whispers his friend’s name. “OK, big boy,” intones Shorty’s ghostly, off screen voice. Hell’s House, ostensibly a social reform film meant to shine a light on abuses within the reform school system, becomes a love story between two teenaged boys. Was Durkin’s emotionally charged performance in Hell’s House a reflection of his personal life? At the time of his death, he was sharing a home with 24-year-old Henry Willson. Years later, Willson gained fame as a semi-out Hollywood agent who discovered actors Tab Hunter and Rock Hudson, both of whom remained closeted for much of their careers. Hudson was tragically outed shortly before his death from AIDS in 1985 at age 59. “It would not surprise me to know that Trent was gay,” said Diana Serra Cary. “However, in the early thirties it would have been suicidal for such a promising young actor to come out of the closet. Especially without the protection of a strong producer, or already under contract to MGM, with studio head Louis B. Mayer seriously invested in his future success as a leading man.” Cary shared her belief that MGM leading soflagaynews //

man Robert Taylor, who was gay, was forced into an arranged marriage with movie star Barbara Stanwyck. Taylor’s public image was protected by his studio. “If Trent was already aware that he was gay, as was my dear friend Roddy McDowall early on, I think he would have persevered as prudently as possible until our more tolerant generation finally brought the subject openly to the table as a denial of civil rights and demanded the end of such cruel quaint dodges as civil unions and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” Cary said. While it appears they were indeed a couple, only Durkin and Willson knew for sure. But there’s no doubt of Durkin’s great acting ability. Had he lived, Cary agreed, Durkin could easily have played roles that were ultimately played by acting giants such as Marlon Brando.

It wasn’t meant to be. On Saturday, May 4th, 1935, Durkin, Jackie Coogan and three other men were returning from a hunting trip near San Diego. The driver lost control of the vehicle, and Durkin was flung to his death into a deep canyon that was filled with large boulders. The day before, Chasing Yesterday, his final film, had opened in theaters. He had dropped the Junior moniker for the film, and was billed as Trent Durkin. It was to be the beginning of his segues into adult roles. Durkin’s death was front-page news. The public was shocked by this unspeakable tragedy. Yet today, Trent “Junior” Durkin is a rarely mentioned footnote in Hollywood history. We can only speculate as to how far his extraordinary talent might have taken him.

Dori Zinn

When you walk into the Rainbow Room in Fort Lauderdale, don’t be caught off guard by the bright pink and purple walls. Mandi Hawke, the director of Youth Services at the new youth drop in center in Fort Lauderdale, said it was the SunServe staff that designed, painted and installed the space.
The Rainbow Room opened on Feb. 12 as Broward County’s first and currently its only LGBTQA drop in center for youth 12 to 21 years old. While there are other spaces around the county that are considered “drop in” groups for youth, the Rainbow Room is the first SunServe exclusive space. SunServe, a South Florida nonprofit LGBT
social service agency, provided the space for kids as a place for them to visit, primarily after school. SunServe hosts an array of education and outreach projects, along with counseling and support groups. “On any given week, 20 to 50 youth attend the drop in center and Fort Lauderdale Youth Group,” Hawke told SFGN. The Fort Lauderdale Youth Group meets Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rainbow Room. It’s regularly open weekdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Along with the youth staff offices, the space holds a computer center, a café, and a game room with Wii, PlayStation and Netflix. Snacks and drinks are readily available. Desks, couches and a large array of books are also on hand for young adults to enjoy. When the Rainbow Room isn’t serving youth after school, it has regular events in the evening, including yoga classes, craft nights, hip-hop dance classes and more. Adults 21 and over also have the option to book the space for a fee.

Colton Ford
Not just a pretty voice
Gary M. Kramer garyk@att.net
Colton Ford may have spent ten months in the adult film industry, but he has been performing music for decades. The singer and sometimes actor—“The Lair” and “Another Gay Movie”—has a new CD coming out entitled “The Way I Am.” It’s a strong mix of music with songs ranging in style from electronica and house to pop and jazz. (Fun Fact: Ford was once in a Jazz Quartet called “High Society”). Meeting in a Starbucks in New York City,
Ford is impressive in person. A big, beefy guy who is sporting some gray, he is muscular and masculine but lisps for effect at various times during the interview. What Ford projects—other than some pretty serious sex appeal—is confidence and pride. Maybe that is why he called his CD “The Way I Am.” The CD is a reflection of who he is. Given how arresting Ford’s body is his instrument—talking about his voice, of course—is not what folks might expect.
Colton Ford Photo courtesy of Aaron Cobbett
It breaks out high and croons before the bass line kicks in on the first track, “First in Line.” The album’s single, “Let Me Live Again,” is a catchy tune that lets Ford show his vocal range, and the title track, “Just the Way I Am,” features the singer performing in a deeper register. Two of the album’s best songs are “Alone,” which has a jazzy vibe to it, and “Realize (Our Love Is Hear to Stay),” an upbeat delight. While the album was supposed to come out a year ago, that long road is nothing compared to the trials and tribulations the singer has endured in the music industry. Back in the early 90s, Ford was looking for his big break. He was paired up with Frankie Knuckles at Virgin Records. However, midway through making the album, someone at Virgin wanted a diva, and Ford—who is no diva—was replaced. He recalled wistfully, “We were talking about a tour, and doing a duet for the album… I was living the fantasy of what I had dreamed about… Two days after I was replaced, I was temping at a bank.” Other deals with Virgin plus one at another record company also fell through. Such devastating setbacks only make Ford’s successes that much sweeter. He acknowledged, “Artists are survivors,

otherwise you go mad,” and explained that finding happiness in the entertainment industry is hard, but gratifying. “When you’re artistically and creatively satisfied, and doing it in a way that is marketable, you can make an impact. That’s another balance that artists have to figure out.” The singer not only survived, he thrived. After his porn career, he met Michael Alago, who had been at Geffen and Electra records. “He saw me and believed in me and brought me into Outsider Music, and did the ‘Tug of War’ album.” Ford recalled. “We had a Top 10 single on Billboard with ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered.’” Next, Bill Coleman came in and eventually became Ford’s manager. “He started pulling me in to background sessions with Nervo and Ultra Naté, and we hit it off,” the singer admitted. “We did a song, and then WAWA had done some remixes, so I got a track from them, and started writing with them, and Razor + Guido….” Ford mentioned the names of these collaborators with justifiable pride. All of these musicians appear on “The Way I Am,” and contribute to the CD’s energetic groove. It’s the perfect album to play on the way to the beach, in a nightclub, at home, or at the gym. For Ford, that makes it all worthwhile.

Launched in 2011 by the University of Wynwood with the John S. and James L. Not only the host to newly empowered gay men of all shapes and sizes, eager to take full advantage of their sexual freedoms at a lavish venue, the ‘Continental’ brought culture to the bathhouse’s stage week after week, becoming instrumental in the careers of ‘60s and ‘70s icons like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Patti LaBelle, and Peter Allen.
