J-Lo to Make Cameo in Lesbian TV Series The actress and singer will appear on a show she’s producing set to air in June After her lesbian television drama “The Fosters” was given the green light, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez said she’ll make a guest appearance on the show once it starts airing. The show will focus on a biracial lesbian couple who raise biological and adoptive children together. It is set to premiere on ABC Family on June 3.
Jake Austin, best known for his role on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place, will play the foster son of two lesbian moms in the series. He told E! Online that Lopez wants to make a cameo appearance. “She was maybe thinking about doing a cameo in the pilot ... but there was some apprehension in deciding
how early they wanted to feature someone like her into the show,” he said. “So she’ll definitely come on… but at this point we just don’t know when.” Lopez has said in the past she’s pro-gay: “When it comes to gay marriage, I just believe in love,” she told The Advocate in 2010.

Activists believe the bill providing LGBT workplace protections could pass this year A bipartisan group has reintroduced a bill that would protect LGBT people from being fired by most public or private employers. According to Think Progress, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act was filed on April 25. If passed, it would provide nationwide workplace protections
against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) are spearheading the effort. ENDA has been reintroduced in Congress every year since 1994. However, activists believe that the momentum behind the gay rights movement could
prompt legislators to finally pass it. A survey by the Center for American Progress indicates that 73 percent of voters support ENDA, including Republicans and conservatives. Under the bill, religious organization would be exempted from these LGBT workplace protections.

Since then, Beatie, has given birth to three children. He recently announced plans to appeal his divorce after his marriage was declared invalid by an Arizona court.

+Wilton Manors Recognizes International Family Equality Day The City of Wilton Manors became even more gay-friendly. Officials gave a proclamation to start recognizing International Family Equality Day on Tuesday, April 23. The celebration takes place around the globe on May 5. Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Julie Carson, whose brother has adopted two
sons along with his partner, recognizes that the city of Wilton Manors is home to many types of diverse families. “I believe we are an emblem of diversity, not just here in Florida but nationwide,” Carson told SFGN. “In my own family diversity is a very important element.” Carson said one of the inspirations for requesting the proclamation is
the work she has seen through the local organization, South Florida Family Pride. SFFP is a volunteer run organization aimed at providing support, advocacy and fun for the LGBT families in South Florida. “The work that [South Florida Family Pride] does is something special,” Carson said. “I wanted to make sure a local group
Teen Told He Has to +Trans Run for Prom Queen
A high school student in Pennsylvania has been receiving an outpouring of support from the online equal rights community after he was denied a bid to be his school’s prom king. Issak Wolfe, a senior at Red Lion Area Senior High School in York County, Pennsylvania, told The York Dispatch that his transition from female-to-male had been relatively positive up until this incident. Wolfe alleges school principal Mark Shue put his name under prom queen instead of prom king. Wolfe told the York Daily Record that the incident has left him “humiliated” since he had already passed out fliers and huNg posters promoting himself for prom king. “If I would have known they would’ve done that, I probably would have opted out,” Wolfe told the York Daily Record. “What bothers me the most is they never told me.” The Southern York County School District’s policy manual states that “The district shall provide to all students, without discrimination, course offerings, counseling, assistance, employment, athletics and extracurricular activities.” The policy also says that all students should have access to “review of programs, activities and practices to ensure that all students have equal access and are not segregated except when permissible by law or regulation.” Phone calls left with the school district were not returned at press time.

Singaporean Gay Couple + Raise Funds to Challenge Gay Sex Ban
A gay couple in Singapore has raised over $80,000 in their quest to challenge their country’s ban on gay sex. The original goal was $50,000 but that goal was surpassed just 18 hours after launching their campaign on indiegogo.com. In April of this year, Gary and Kenneth were disappointed when the Singapore High court ruled against them and upheld Section 377A of the Singapore Penal Code which criminalizes sex between two men. They are raising money to challenge the ban.

A man from Kent, Washington has been charged with seven felony counts stemming from a week-long crime spree in Seattle where police say he contacted men on the gay social app Growlr before raping them at gunpoint and robbing them, according to Advocate. Seattle police described the attacks to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer saying the accused, 32-year-old convicted felon Leverne Lee Maxwell, would meet up with the men at their homes after talking on the social app. After asking for water, Maxwell would brandish the gun threatening to kill the victims if they did not cooperate. Maxwell insists he is innocent, saying the sex was consensual. Investigators said they found fingerprints on an unused condom linking Maxwell to the alleged crimes. He was also identified by “several victims.” He remains in jail on $750,000 bail awaiting his May 6 court appearance. The man is also accused of the same crimes in Kent using the gay mobile app Scruff.

Glen Weinzimer was 32 years old when he found out he was HIV Positive. His doctor told him he wouldn’t live to see the end of the week. He did. Then he was told he wouldn’t make it to the end of the month. He did. He was continually told, year after year, that it would be his last. Until one day, 15 years ago, his disease was no longer detectable.

In the midst of his disease, Weinzimer was forced to retire in 1994. He started volunteering just to get out of the house, making his first AIDS ride appearance in 1996. On May 11, the first Bike It For Life kicks off in Fort Lauderdale at The Pride Center. While SMART Ride is geared toward more advanced riders, Bike It For Life targets less experienced riders with “passion.” “[The riders] aren’t necessarily professionals,” Weinzimer said. “They just want to prove that AIDS isn’t bigger than they are.” Bike It For Life lets riders choose a distance that is right for them: 15, 30, 60, or 100 miles. Weinzimer said while The SMART Ride is an annual ride, there will be many Bike It For Life rides around the state of Florida each year. The first, in Fort Lauderdale, wasn’t a coincidence. “We decided on doing the first one in Fort Lauderdale because we live here, we know the community,” Weinzimer said. “We know the benefiting agencies and can experiment with the event, fine-tune it.” The Bike It For Life this year benefits the following agencies: The Pride Center, SunServe, Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, and The Poverello Center Food Bank. While 100 percent of the proceeds will be going to all the agencies, 50 percent will be divided up equally and the other 50 percent will be dispersed among any or all of the agencies, however the donor chooses. According to the Bike It For Life website, “If you decide that you want the remaining 50 percent to go to one agency, or if you want the second half to go to a combination of the chosen agencies, that’s how it will be divided.” All agencies have teams riding in the event. As of press time, Pride Pack — The Pride Center’s team — has raised the most money for their team, with more than $2,000. To donate, you do not have to put your money into a team. The website allows donations to be raised individually, given to independent fundraisers, or teams competing in the ride. The ride starts approximately at 6:37 a.m. on May 11. In celebration of Mother’s Day Weekend, riders are encouraged to invite their moms for a free brunch at The Pride Center after the ride. Weinzimer said he expected most riders to finish by 3 p.m. All riders who expect to go 100 miles will be fed

“on the road,” that is, at a pit stop while they are riding. There will be multiple stops and water stations up and down A1A for riders. While The SMART Ride is for the more advanced rider, Weinzimer said Bike It For Life is for those who still want to ride, “but may not be able to enter the long trek down to Key West or they can’t raise the $1,200 required amount.” If riders can pay the $50 to register and commit to raising $250, they’re in. As Weinzimer continues to develop his local ride, he still plans to take Bike It For Life around the state. “Our ideal goal would be to raise $50,000 and get 150-200 riders,” he said. “If we don’t get it, it won’t stop us from doing more rides.” Plans are in the works for rides in Tampa, Orlando, Miami and Key West.

Jim Ellis’ days of expensive lunches at Capital Grille were over when he admitted to a slew of charges against him earlier this year. On April 30, Ellis sat in a Miami court and was sentenced. He got 38 months in prison, and three years of supervised probation. He’s got 60 days to report to the court for incarceration.

Equality Gets Political Christiana Lilly

A heated debate at Pembroke Pines City Hall turned into an online back and forth battle between a local activist and the city’s vice mayor. During the city commission meeting on April 17, Commissioner Iris Siple filed a motion that would allow domestic partners to be included on the city’s health insurance plan for employees, something that “should have been acted upon long before now,” she said, adding that Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Broward Sheriff’s Office and Broward County offer this to its employees, among others locally. She also laid out how inexpensive the costs would be to the city. It took 30 minutes from Siple reading the motion to finally vote unanimously for the city manager to research it, with plenty of back patting in between (relive the magic here: http://bit.ly/bZoZER). However, it was what local activist
Michael Rajner called “grandstanding” and “sounding like a king throwing scraps to the common person” by Vice Mayor Angelo Castillo when he blamed the unions for holding up equality in the city. The vice mayor, who was the CEO of Broward House for nine years, spoke for about five minutes about how the issue has not come forward in the past because unions had never done so. “People have been talking to me about why we don’t have this in place, and the answer has always consistently been that in this city there has been a pattern in practice that goes back many, many years… that anything having to do with compensation or benefits comes forward to us from labor,” Castillo said at the meeting. “In the bucket of money that we could use to benefit labor, each of them has their own agenda as we all know about how those dollars should be used.” Later, Castillo went on Facebook and posted the topic for friends and followers

to discuss, claiming that “labor only favors it if the city pays the entire bill — without staff chipping in — making that one benefit unlike any other we offer.” Oddly enough, when public comments were allowed at the meeting, a representative from both the police and fire unions voiced support for the move. “Instead of focusing on giving the city manager the clear direction on what information to collect and its reason,” Rajner told SFGN, “Castillo instead held the commission hostage and forcing a conversation and grandstanding on who should pay for the benefits.” The vice mayor told SFGN that domestic partnership have not been included in the city’s insurance plan because “labor has not asked for that benefit on behalf of their employees.” He added that he hopes to see this change in the coming months. “The domestic partner employees I have spoken to have no problem at all and are indeed eager to provide an employee contribution for benefits just like all city employees do. It appears to be labor unions that object and some advocates which makes no sense.” Rajner took to his email and wrote a long letter to Castillo. “You could have stepped forward as a leader and added to the conversation on how important in 2013 it is to create for nontraditional families entry points to critical

benefits needed to provide for their family,” Rajner wrote to Castillo in an email. “The time and place for the conversation you raised this week is when the city manager in June, Pride month, reviews his research with the city commission.” Castillo responded back quickly, continuing the conversation on how equality means equality, and that those with domestic partners should also have to pay their share, just like employees currently do, and wrote that Rajner was “attacking me for trying to get this right.” The exchange went back and forth for the rest of the day, with Castillo adding that “I will still demand that labor confirm their commitment to equal participation on the record. Specially, I want proof from each labor union individually.” Tim Ross, president of the Dolphin Democrats, chimed in on Castillo’s Facebook and wrote that “labor is not asking the city to pay the entire bill, labor is not asking the city anything.” The email exchange continued into the next day until Castillo told Rajner he had said everything he needed on the issue. Rajner concluded with “I warned everyone that you would find a way to manipulate the situation and exploit it to find a way to grandstand on the matter. Thanks for proving me correct!” Grandstanding or much ado about nothing? Let us know what you think.

NBA’s Jason Collins Comes Out As Gay Joe Sterling It’s the biggest move of his career and it’s off the court. Jason Collins, who played with the NBA’s Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards this season, has disclosed that he is gay. This makes him the first active openly gay male athlete in the four major American pro team sports. The center, who said he is now a free agent, made the disclosure in a column appearing in the upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated. “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ‘I’m different.’ If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand,” he wrote. Collins also wrote that the killing of three people at the Boston Marathon convinced him to make an announcement. Things can change in a moment, so why not starting living more truthfully, he wrote. Sports Illustrated’s managing editor said Collins was reticent about being a flag bearer. “It is a much simpler, more personal reason. He wants to have a family,” Chris Stone told CNN. “He wants the same life that his twin brother, Jarron, has. This is
a secret he’s kept for a very long time. He didn’t even inform his brother that he was gay until late last summer. ... So much for twin telepathy.” Jarron, who played in the NBA for 10 seasons and was Jason’s teammate at Stanford, tweeted to his brother: “Very proud of you.” “Jason Collins has forever changed the face of sports,” said the Human Rights Campaign, a civil rights group fighting for gay rights. It likened the announcement to Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play in major league baseball in the modern era. “At a time when millions are reflecting on the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson, Jason Collins is a hero for our own times,” the group said. Collins is a 7-foot center who played with six NBA teams over the past 12 seasons. Along with the Wizards and Celtics, they are the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies. He has averaged 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 713 career games and he has had a great deal of playoff experience with the Nets mostly and the Hawks. CNN’s Jason Hanna and Jill Martin contributed to this report. From SFGN’s Media Partner CNN.

Just mere minutes after a Sports Illustrated article in which Washington Wizards center Jason Collins announced he’s gay, the reactions of people in and out of the sports circles started to pour in. Local organizations and athletes chimed in as well, expressing their support and lack of understanding about Collins’ coming out. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace tweeted and then deleted his thoughts on the matter: “All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys,” Wallace wrote. His words prompted Miami LGBT advocacy group SAVE Dade to call Wallace’s comments “a sad moment and a huge disappointment for Miami-Dade residents” and asked the Miami Dolphins for an apology. For its part, the Dolphins responded saying Wallace has apologized for his comments and assured they have addressed the matter with him. “Mike’s comments do not reflect the views of the Miami Dolphins,” the team

said in a statement. “We believe in a culture of inclusiveness and respect, and any statements to the contrary are in no way acceptable to our organization.” Equality Florida, the state’s largest LGBT rights organization, issued a statement calling Wallace’s comments “insensitive” and saying they hope Collins’ announcement leads the NBA to set a higher standard for supporting athletes who come out. “Jason’s announcement is particularly important to LGBT youth and sends a message that they can grow up to be anything in this world, including a sports star,” Equality Florida’s statement read. “And when we speak out to support Jason, we send a message to those same youth that the world is ready to support them.” Collins’ peers inside the basketball world have, for the most part, been completely behind the 12-year veteran. Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld issued this statement: “We are extremely proud of Jason and soflagaynews //
support his decision to live his life proudly and openly. He has been a leader on and off the court and an outstanding teammate throughout his NBA career. Those qualities will continue to serve him both as a player and as a positive role model for others of all sexual orientation.” Los Angeles Lakers’ star Kobe Bryant also tweeted his support. “Proud of [Jason Collins]. Don’t suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others,” he tweeted. Lakers’ legend Irving “Magic” Johnson, whose son Earvin Johnson III is openly gay, also reached out to Collins. “Jason Collins has announced that he is gay. I know Jason and his family well and I support him 100%,” Magic tweeted. Collin’s only professional critic seems to be ESPN sports analyst Chris Broussard. On ESPN’s program, Outside” The Lines,” Broussard said Collins was “walking in open rebellion to God” by saying he was a Christian and gay.
SouthFloridaGayNews
“If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits,” Broussard said. “It says that, you know, that’s a sin. I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the Bible would characterize them as a Christian.” Super Bowl champion and Fort Lauderdale resident Brendon Ayanbadejo, who is working with Equality Florida to help advance marriage equality in Florida, issued a statement through Athlete Ally where he applauded Collins’ decision saying he is “paving the way for a more accepting and welcoming environment in the world of professional sports.” “I hope that Collins’ decision to go public with this news will make all people feel comfortable enough to follow in his footsteps,” Ayanbadejo said. “I look forward to meeting Jason Collins and working with him in the future.” Collins’ interview with Sports Illustrated hits newsstands next week.

Opening Doors in Pro Sports
For years, I have editorialized that most athletes could care less if their teammate screwed a camel as long as he could take two and hit a line drive to right to drive in a run. In short, help your teammates win and they will look the other way at your personal life. Jason Collins happens to be a gay athlete who plays professional basketball. He is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week because he came out of the closet while his career is still in play. Collins is a free agent this year, who will find a role on some team next year. He is a journeyman back up center who has played
on many teams. Beginning today, he is playing on our team as well. Whether you are a teacher in a Catholic school or a professional athlete, you no longer walk alone as a gay American. From President Obama to the commissioner of the National Basketball Association, Gary Stern, professionals, peers, and the media have supported Collins publicly and personally. We live in a country that eventually embraces the rights of people seeking them. Professional sports have had gay athletes in them, of course. Go into the Alibi on Wilton Drive, and you will find on the walls in a
glass case the uniform of a professional gay athlete who pitched in a World Series for a major league team over 25 years ago. Decades ago, coming out was not an option. The fear was because many people did not accept who they were, let alone asking others to do so in the closed and closeted world of professional sports. The locker room culture can be brutal, and few dared break tradition. Inevitably, when an athlete discussed his sexuality, it came after his career was over, at a time when he could no longer be bullied. Today, gay men and lesbians own and have operated professional sport teams, and have already come out of the closet, from Laura Ricketts of the Chicago Cubs to Kevin McClatchy of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rick Welts was the General Manager of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns when he came out in 2011. Transparency is healthy, and always has been. As Shakespeare wrote, “to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” Each time someone comes out, no matter what uniform you wear, another wall falls down. With the words, “I’m gay,” Jason Collins shatters a barrier others were not willing to break. He makes it easier for the next guy, whose story won’t matter as much. The irony is that our paper has profiled openly gay athletes in high schools. More and more, younger people pave the way in society. We ought to listen to what they
have to say. Here is hoping the U.S. Supreme Court does when they decide DOMA later this spring. People are being asked today the significance of what Jason Collins has done. It is simple, really. That it is so newsworthy means our challenge, as an LGBT community is still real; our goals not yet accomplished. Full acceptance of LGBT life in America will have arrived when someone comes out of the closet and it is no longer news. Full acceptance will come when you tell someone you are reading the South Florida Gay News, and they ask you why you need a gay paper. We each play a role in making LGBT life more an acceptable measure in society. We do it by living honorable lives in the daytime today, making our sexuality irrelevant. Anderson Cooper is a journalist, Adam Lambert is an entertainer, and Jason Collins is a basketball player. You may be a cop or a construction worker, a doctor or a diva. What you do and whom you do is not nearly as important as who you are. The ‘Wireless’ catalogue has a little plaque you can purchase online. It reads, ‘My goal in life is to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.’ You don’t even need Shakespeare to tell you how to live. It does not matter whether you are shooting baskets as a pro athlete or heading up a gay and straight alliance in a local high school, you win the battle of life by showing up, playing hard and doing the right thing.

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

(April 19 to April 25) The topic I want to touch on this week is probably going to ruffle a few feathers and get me called a hypocrite, but oh well. As much as I want to fight for the end of AIDS and HIV, I can’t put myself on a platform and tell people what they should. There’s a difference is stating your opinion and blatantly asserting your own agenda into people’s lives. But hey, we see that happening every day in Washington. Unfortunately, the actions I’m speaking of are coming from a lawmaker who happens to have the backing, and the money, of a multimillion-dollar AIDS organization.
SouthFloridaGayNews
California state lawmaker Isadore Hall has introduced legislation, AB 332, which would make condoms mandatory in porn in the entire state. Right now, Measure B requires condoms in porn only if the video is shot in Orange County. The law, that has yet to be enforced, is supposed to funded by the fines imposed on studios that don’t force their performers to use condoms. Here’s my problem. I believe that by trying to enforce condoms on performers, activists and lawmakers may inadvertently do more harm than good. No one likes to do something they have to. People should be wearing condoms because they want to. How many times in your life did your mother tell you that you couldn’t have or do something? That made you want it even more, right? Forcing the use of condoms will cut back the need to have performers tested. I’ve said in the past I believe I was placed with a positive model and not told, and I believe that that ultimately led to my infection because of our unsafe sex off camera. I made other stupid choices with other people, but I felt I was safe having sex with this person. Just using a condom would be, in my opinion, an excuse for performers to not be tested.

Seduced by a storyteller François Ozon and his film In the House Gary M. Kramer garyk@att.net
Out French writer/director François Ozon’s diverting new film “In the House” alternates between two stories. One has Germain (Fabrice Luchini), a teacher, mentoring Claude (Ernst Umhauer), a student in his literature class. The other features Claude’s stories, which depict his experiences in the home of his classmate Rapha (Bastien Ughetto). Claude’s stories intrigue and excite Germain, and “In the House” depicts how Germain crosses moral and ethical lines to keep Claude’s addicting tales coming. Ozon artfully plays with ideas of truth and trust, fiction and morality to create a seductive, spellbinding comedic drama about desire. The charming filmmaker recently met with SFGN to talk about how he crafted In
the House. GMK: There is a line in your film, “People are nothing without stories.” Do you believe this to be true? FO: Yes! I am nothing without film, without fiction. I need to escape—like the character of Germain—from reality. Life in cinema is better than life in reality. GMK: Have you ever read a serial or watched a soap opera where you couldn’t wait for the next installment? FO: Of course! When I was young, “Dallas” was so popular… It was very subversive and forbidden. GMK: You’ve addressed perfect families previously in your film “Sitcom,” and
François Ozon on the set of In the House Photo courtesy of François Ozon
now again here. What is your sense of the perfect family? FO: [LAUGHS]. As a child, I dreamt of the perfect family in the perfect house in a beautiful suburb. Actually, I lived in Paris in an old building and my dream was to live like a suburban American— like Rapha’s family. My family was not dysfunctional, but it was not perfect. GMK: Another theme is your film is that art and literature teach us how to awaken our senses to beauty. FO: I think art helps you understand life. For me, discovering a movie helps me understand my relationships. There are people who can cry in a movie, but are unable to cry in life. GMK: Who was influential in your education? FO: I didn’t have such a strong relationship like Germain and Claude in the film, but discovering Fassbinder — I had the feeling like he was talking to me, you know? I loved very stylish movies by Douglas Sirk and Max Ophuls, and at the same time I liked realistic movies, and I didn’t know how to have these two visions in the same movie. When I discovered Fassbinder’s movies, I thought the key is there. GMK: Your characters talk about creating and expressing desire in “In the House”.

How do you create and expepress desire and sexuality… FO: [Interrupts] Sexuality is life. [Laughs]. Sexuality is very important and very often my films are about people looking for their identity. To find your identity you have to go through your sexuality. That’s why sex is so important in my movies. I love to film sex scenes. It’s very exciting! I think the cinema is the best place to have desire. There is something about cinema and fantasy, obsession and sexuality. You want to touch the bodies of the actors and actresses. GMK: Who do you desire? FO: I desire all my actors — men and women. It doesn’t mean I have sex with everybody! [Laughs]. Sometimes I would like to! GMK: “In the House” is also about being seduced… FO: I love to be seduced! That means you have desire, you feel alive. I love to seduce my audience. I love to seduce people too. GMK: Do you feel your films expose you? FO: [People] think they know me because they’ve seen my movies. It’s quite disturbing to feel like you are naked in front of them. I think my films are very personal. That’s why I don’t understand why I do interviews. Everything [about me] is in the movies!

lifestyle passages George Hymowitz Long-time Poverello Center volunteer and community staple George Hymowitz passed away on March 15. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his partner of 42 years, Ken Fountaine. The two met in Brooklyn and would eventually move down to Florida. While still in New York, Hymowitz started the Gay Fathers group that is still around today. He was also founder of SAGE of Broward County, and served in the early years of PFLAG. “We moved down here in 1995. At the time, we were told about Poverello, and we decided to volunteer our time there. George volunteered there five days a week,” Fountaine told SFGN. Poverello was one of the few places that were around in the 90s. It needed people who were business savvy, which Hymowitz qualified for, having been a CPA in another life. “He was a perfect fit for Poverello,” Fountaine said. “He continued on and volunteered all the way up until he was hospitalized.” Hymowitz went to the hospital in January after a fall. Hymowitz’s strongest trait was honesty, Fountaine said. “I’ve never met anyone with so much integrity. In the 20 plus year he worked at Poverello, he never got paid — you could count on one hand the times he took leave.” Hymowitz served during WWII. The honor guard at his funeral recognized Fountaine as his partner, and the flag was presented to him, although Hymowitz’s former wife and children were present at the New York March 18 ceremony. After years of volunteering in different agencies across the region, local activist Andy Eddy met Hymowitz. “I got to know George and befriended him. Although retired, George spent day after day volunteering at the Poverello Food and Nutrition Center. While many volunteers came and went George remained dedicated to his task even in his later days when he was not in the best of health,” Eddy told SFGN. “I often visited Poverello and reflect on the fact that he had his desk at the Center until his passing. George was a loyal and dedicated man and one of those caring individuals that our community can be proud of even though men like George can appear invisible to those not so involved.” To Eddy, “George is an example of one of the many dedicated and caring volunteer heroes we often hear so little about but who make a world of difference to those in need in a time when others could care less.”

Rick Gibson Rick Gibson, a Wilton Manors realtor, died April 25 of an apparent suicide. His body was recovered from the Double Tree Hotel on East Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, in a room he had rented. While Fort Lauderdale police have refused comment as to the cause of death, citing an ongoing investigation, friends have indicated Gibson left a suicide note and had made arrangements to have his dog cared for. The Broward County medical examiner’s office told SFGN that it will be conducting toxicology examinations, and so it will take about two weeks before any results are released. “Rick was a really good guy,” said one of his past clients, Howard Marr, 51, of Oakland Park. “Even though you only saw him once or twice a year, it was you didn’t miss a day.” Ellen Friedman, 53, of Fort Lauderdale met Gibson when she was working for Hot Spots around 1999. “[Gibson] was on the most caring individuals I’d ever met. He was kind, considerate to his friends. He was just a good person. The man lived to be a volunteer.” She met with him briefly on Thursday, April 18. “He was headed out to a closing. He seemed fine,” she told SFGN. “I’m in shock. Tomorrow’s not promised to anybody.” An old friend of Gibson’s, Paul Hyman, the former executive director of the Pride Center, was very upset at hearing at Gibson’s passing. “I was very sorry to learn about the sudden death of Rick Gibson. Rick was among an early group of [Pride Center] board leaders who embraced the Center when it wasn’t popular to do so. Rick played a pivotal role in shaping [The Pride Center’s] strategy, which began with the statement “we need a new lawyer.” Rick connected us with essential resources. He spearheaded early rebranding efforts and was very generous with his time and money.” Upon hearing about Gibson’s death friends also posted messages on his Facebook account. Below are just a few. his drink was conceived in an effort to be contrarian to the contrarians. It’s no secret that there are many affiliated to bar culture who can’t help but cringe when the word “vodka” is mentioned in their presence. I’ve never understood this, because it’s the first thing most drinking folks ask for. Sure, I understand that it’s not the most expressive or exciting spirit to play with, but let’s face it, it’s not going anywhere. Enter the Punch Wagon. Delightfully refreshing, bright and snappy, this is a perfect example of what I’d call a “gateway cocktail,” or “trust-building drink.” Using well-known ingredients in a playful recipe allows for the feel of a user-friendly cocktail experience without some of the more eccentric trappings that we drink geeks are prone to. Yes, those are men in tights! The Trocks are back in South Florida. Combining a wicked comic sense of humor with respect for true classical dance, the all-male, 16-member Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo dance a fine line between high art and high camp. For decades, these turbo-charged “ballerinas” have delighted audiences with parodies of classical ballet. From Swan Lake to Le Corsaire, their studied postures blend with over-thetop gestures and powerhouse technique to deliver performances that amuse at every level. Catch them tonight only at 8 p.m. at the Parker Playhouse. Tickets are $37.50-57.50 at ParkerPlayhouse.com.

The Florida Grand Opera brings one of opera’s most captivating stories to the Broward Center, Verdi’s La traviata. You’ll love the tragic story of Violetta, one of the most desirable women in Paris, but labeled by society as “la traviata,” a woman who has gone astray. When she at last meets her beloved, his father demands a supreme sacrifice from her to save the family’s reputation. Her broken heart and the disease that ravages her body bring her to an early and tragic death. Performances Saturday night at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tickets available at FGO.org.

Janis Ian Scheduled To Perform Sold-Out Concerts in Davie Andrea Dulanto
adulanto03@gmail.com
Janis Ian Photo courtesy of Janis Ian
Singer-songwriter Janis Ian is in high demand. Currently on tour throughout the U.S., Ian is set to perform two sold out concerts in Davie at the River of Grass Café on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. Both shows start at 8 p.m.
One of the reasons for the strong interest in Ian’s work may be the Grammy award she received in February 2013. She won for the audio version of her autobiography Society’s Child in the category of Best Spoken Word Album. The award complements Ian’s remarkable career. In 1975, she won a Grammy for Best Pop Female Vocalist for her song, “At Seventeen.” Between the Lines, the album on which “At Seventeen” appeared, also won a Grammy for Best Engineered Recording. In addition, Ian has received seven Grammy nominations throughout the years — the first one when she was fifteen years old, for Best Folk Performance in 1966. But the nominations without the wins provided a more insightful lesson for Ian. As she stated on the Grammy website: “I’d gotten used to being a really good loser.” In an interview with SFGN, Ian added that losing “teaches you resiliency,” that winning awards actually makes one realize “you can always be better,” and that the “other people in the category… are just as worthy” of the award.
When asked to reflect on her first Grammy from 1975, Ian told SFGN that “the first one was a new beginning… I was really young and had worked very hard to re-establish myself as a songwriter and singer in people’s minds.” Ian views her latest Grammy as “a step on the road towards whatever’s next.” “It’s great that it’s in the spoken word category, and it’s great to bring a musician into that category. [Audio books] is an area I’m interested in,” she said. Ian has three forthcoming audio books, including a children’s book and audio book The Tiny Mouse. “It’s about a little mouse that runs away to sea, becomes sea sick and has to go home,” she shared. She is also writing a novel and a book of short stories. Another ongoing project is The Pearl Foundation, a nonprofit established by Ian and her partner Patricia Snyder to fund scholarships for returning students. The foundation is named after Ian’s late mother, who had been diagnosed with
Multiple Sclerosis and later completed her undergraduate and Master’s degrees at Goddard College. “We are interested in funding complete scholarships,” said Ian. This includes books and other expenses. The Pearl Foundation currently funds scholarships at Goddard, the University of Tennessee College of Law, Berea College, and Warren Wilson College. Ian reported that over the past ten years the foundation has raised nearly $700,000. As Ian considered the audiences for her current tour, she noted that “the Grammy [has] brought out a lot of older fans.” But there are also “young writers, guitarists, musicians. It’s really gratifying passing on what I’ve learned.” There’s also the “core gay audience who stop by after the show, thanking me for coming out when I did [in 1993].” Audiences in South Florida are also “a good audience” with “an element of gratitude.” “I always like coming to Florida,” Ian said. “It’s one of the prettiest states.”
LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO “Delivering more bang for the buck than most other classical companies in America.” —The New Yorker
Combining a wicked sense of humor with a respect for true classical dance, the all male dance company dances a fine line between high art and high camp. With their studied postures, over the top gestures and powerhouse technique, don’t miss an evening of pure dance entertainment!

Miami LGBT Film Festival Closes with Premieres, Film by South Florida Natives J.W. Arnold
jw@prdconline.com
Award-winning actor and director James Franco will lend some Hollywood star power to the 2013 Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Photo courtesy of Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
For the past week, the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival has drawn thousands of local movie fans to theaters across the county for screenings of LGBT-themed features, shorts and documentaries, including a packed house at the Olympia Theatre for the presentation of the HBO Latin America Ally Award to actor/writer/director James Franco on Saturday, April 27. With one more weekend remaining, organizers have programmed a number of films that will continue to attract full houses at the festival venues. The Geography Club, screening on Thursday, May 2 at the O Cinema - Miami Shores, has a local connection: Director Gary Entin and writer Edmund Entin — identical twins raised in Pembroke Pines who got their start making movies in their backyard. Since moving to Los Angeles, the Entins starred in the 2011 cult film, Seconds Apart, and captured roles in numerous movies. They will be attending the festival screening to discuss their film, an adaptation of a popular novel about gay and bisexual students who form a club they think no one will join in an attempt to explore their sexuality together. Breaking Through, Cindy Abel’s documentary about openly gay elected officials, will screen on Friday, May 3 at the Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Rd. in Miami Beach. Tammy Baldwin, the first openly gay U.S. Senator, was one of many politicians who shared their personal stories of selfdoubt and triumph for this film.
On Saturday at Coral Gables Art Cinema, The Go Doc Project explores the differences between love and lust as a soon-to-be college grad devises a plan to meet a hot go-go dancer, “Go.” He convinces Go to let him document his life for a film, following the dancer all around New York and into his apartment. The official closing film of the festival (but not the last), screening on Saturday night at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach, is Hot Guys with Guns, a comedy from Doug Spearman. All hell breaks loose when Danny, an out of work actor, and his ex, trust fund twink Pip, enlist a jaded private investigator to break up a crime spree targeting Hollywood’s gay mafia. Fans of foreign films will like In the Name of, a Polish film about the struggles of a young priest who hides his attraction to men in the ceremony of the Catholic Church. His desires trump his vows when he falls for the son of a local farming family. This film screens in Polish with English subtitles at Coral Gables Art Cinema on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. The final film on the schedule is La Partida, a story of forbidden love in Cuba, where homosexuality is still culturally taboo. Reinier, a teen rent boy, must make drastic choices when he falls for handsome Yosvani. Screening in Spanish with English subtitles at O Cinema – Miami Shores on Sunday at 9:15 p.m. For a complete schedule, film synopsis and ticketing information, go to MGLFF.com. soflagaynews //

LGBT Visitor Center – Miami Karen Brown
For those of us that live here year round, we are reminded of “season,” when snowbirds dust off their wings and flock to town; old friends appear and tourists abound while events and venues brim with excitement. But with all of the fabulousness that is winter in South Florida, spring and summer should be a time for slowing the pace a little and taking the time to really soak up what our backyard has to offer. It is our delight to keep an eye on the current list of things to do (as is our job and pleasure) and where to go

for the visiting public. So, we humbly suggest that, with a little more breathing room in our schedules, exploring these options can become a pastime filled with great rewards. Shops are more appreciative, restaurants and bars, a little less frenetic that allow for room to relax and truly enjoy. Among the folks who stop in at the Visitor Center, there are a surprising number of locals looking to learn about new cultural events on the scene and ways to meet new people. For a few months now,
