A bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act could be introduced after June LGBT activists and lawmakers are already devising a backup plan in case the U.S. Supreme Court decides to uphold a federal law that defines marriage between the union between a man and a woman. According to the Washington Blade, a bill known as the Respect for Marriage Act,

designed to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, would be introduced in Congress if the Supreme Court decision, set to be announced in June, is not in favor of the LGBT community. The lead sponsors of the bill are Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) in the House and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) in the Senate. Log Cabin

Republicans’ Gregory Angelo told the Blade they expect Republican Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), whose son recently came out, to sign on as a co-sponsor. “Given his recent evolution on marriage equality, we expect Republican Senator Portman to be a co-sponsor in the Senate,” Angelo said.

Alliance and the Green party, The Guardian reports. Both the Presbyterian and Catholic Church had written to members of the Unionist party in government to oppose samesex marriage. Those in favor of the bill are considering a legal challenge in the British and European courts if Northern Ireland is

the only part left without the right to marry for LGBT people in the UK. “States may not discriminate with regards to the right to marry and found a family, on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. That obligation is clear in international law,” said Patrick Corrigan of human rights group Amnesty International.

+Research Suggests Marijuana Helps Fight HIV According to a report published by the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, new research shows that compounds related to THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, appear to weaken HIV-1 infections. The study also suggests that killing HIV-1 in this manner may actually strengthen current anti-retroviral therapies making

them more effective. “The synthetic compounds we used in our study may show promise in helping the body fight HIV-1 infection,’” said Dr. Yuri Persidsky, a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.

“As compounds like these are improved further and made widely available, we will continue to explore their potential to fight other viral diseases that are notoriously difficult to treat.” In their discovery, scientists used a cell culture model to infect human macrophages with HIV-1 and added the

Yale to Add Sex+ Reassignment Surgery to Student Healthcare Plan

In a campus-wide email sent last week to over 11,000 Yale students, the Ivy League school announced its plan to add sexreassignment surgery to the healthcare plan offered to students, according to Huffington Post. Yale joins a list of 36 other colleges and universities that already cover the procedure, including Brown University and Duke. University spokesman Tom Conroy told the Yale Daily News the decision came after similar coverage was provided to the school’s staff. “This additional student coverage follows a period of several years when similar coverage was provided to Yale employees,” Conroy said. “It made sense, after appropriate study, to bring the student coverage in line with Yale’s belief that, in some circumstances, sexreassignment surgery is medically necessary and appropriate.” The Daily News reports that each procedure will be approved on an individual basis, but the school will use commonly accepted guidelines that generally require a mental health assessment and a period of hormonal therapy and/or living in the desired gender role. The coverage change will go into effect August 1.

Petition Starts to Urge + Georgia’s Governor to Recognize Homophobia

For the second year in a row, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has ignored requests of the LGBT community to recognize the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). Instead, Gov. Deal has decided to sign a proclamation recognizing May 13 as “Mistreatment Awareness Day” in the state of Georgia.

the Georgia Voice. “This [proclamation] is a documentation of homophobia.” Georgia Voice Editor-in-Chief Laura Douglas-Brown also reports Gov. Deal ran a homophobic campaign citing the governor’s unwillingness to support gay adoptions and domestic partner benefits. The petition has 144 supporters as of publication time.

A petition on Change.org was started to encourage Gov. Deal to reissue a proclamation that recognizes IDAHO and not a proclamation that “sanitizes the word ‘homophobia’.” “By issuing the proclamation as ‘Mistreatment Awareness Day’ instead of the requested, ‘International Day Against Homophobia,’ the Governor’s Office has done a great disservice to the very purpose of IDAHO events and the worldwide organizers soflagaynews //

who seek to advocate against homophobia,” the petition reads. International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia Georgia organizer Betty Couvertier was the one who petitioned the Governor’s office last year for the proclamation, and the one who was most disappointed in what the proclamation read. “They couldn’t even use the word homophobia,” Couvertier said according to

West Palm Beach city commissioners approved on April 29 an ordinance to refund taxes paid on health insurance to unmarried domestic partners. West Palm Beach is the only city in Florida to pass such legislation. Robert Telford, a broadcast coordinator for the city’s television station, told the Palm Beach Post he decided to work for the city 17 years ago because of the city’s “progressive attitude toward domestic partner benefits.” “No matter what happens this summer with the Supreme Court this tax equity ordinance is a huge step in the right direction for potential businesses and employers who want to live here,” Telford said at the commission meeting. Currently, federal laws state that straight couples who are married and receive health insurance from their employers are not taxed on the value of the coverage. Federal laws do not recognize unmarried domestic partners. The new ordinance creates a formula by which the city will reimburse the employees for the money they would have received if the federal government recognized domestic partnerships, according to the Post. The city has 16 employees enrolled as having domestic partners and the ordinance will cost West Palm Beach nearly $18,000 over the next year, or more than $1,100 per employee.

What is COMPLERA? COMPLERA is a prescription HIV medicine that is used as a complete regimen to treat HIV-1 in adults who have never taken HIV medicines before and who have an amount of HIV in their blood (this is called “viral load”) that is no more than 100,000 copies/mL. COMPLERA contains 3 medicines – rilpivirine, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. It is not known if COMPLERA is safe and effective in children under the age of 18 years. ®

COMPLERA® does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses you must keep taking COMPLERA. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 to others: always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids; never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them, do not share personal items that may contain bodily fluids. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information you should know about COMPLERA? COMPLERA® can cause serious side effects: • Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include feeling very weak or tired, unusual (not normal) muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nausea or vomiting, feeling cold, especially in your arms and legs, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or a fast or irregular heartbeat. • Serious liver problems. The liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and fatty (steatosis). Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice), dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored bowel movements (stools), loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach pain. • You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking COMPLERA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and stop taking COMPLERA, your hepatitis may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking COMPLERA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health. COMPLERA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

Who should not take COMPLERA? Do not take COMPLERA if you have ever taken other anti-HIV medicines. COMPLERA may change the effect of other medicines and may cause serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may change your other medicines or change their doses. Do not take COMPLERA if you also take these medicines: • anti-seizure medicines: carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol, Tegretol-XR, Teril, Epitol); oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), phenobarbital (Luminal), phenytoin (Dilantin, Dilantin-125, Phenytek) • anti-tuberculosis medicines: rifabutin (Mycobutin), rifampin (Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane, Rifadin) and rifapentine (Priftin) • proton pump inhibitors for stomach or intestinal problems: esomeprazole (Nexium, Vimovo), lansoprazole (Prevacid), dexlansoprazole (Dexilant), omeprazole (Prilosec), pantoprazole sodium (Protonix), rabeprazole (Aciphex) • more than 1 dose of the steroid medicine dexamethasone or dexamethasone sodium phosphate • St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) If you are taking COMPLERA you should not take other HIV medicines or other medicines containing tenofovir (Viread, Truvada, Stribild or Atripla); other medicines containing emtricitabine or lamivudine (Emtriva, Combivir, Epivir, Epivir-HBV, Epzicom, Trizivir, Atripla, Stribild or Truvada); rilpivirine (Edurant) or adefovir (Hepsera). In addition, tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medications because they may interfere with how COMPLERA works and may cause side effects: • certain antacid medicines containing aluminum, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium carbonate (examples: Rolaids, TUMS). These medicines must be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after COMPLERA. • medicines to block stomach acid including cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid), or ranitidine HCL (Zantac). These medicines must be taken at least 12 hours before or 4 hours after COMPLERA. • any of these medicines: clarithromycin (Biaxin); erythromycin (E-Mycin, Eryc, Ery-Tab, PCE, Pediazole, Ilosone), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral) methadone (Dolophine); posaconazole (Noxifil), telithromycin (Ketek) or voriconazole (Vfend). • medicines that are eliminated by the kidneys like acyclovir (Zovirax), cidofovir (Vistide), ganciclovir (Cytovene IV, Vitrasert), valacyclovir (Valtrex) and valganciclovir (Valcyte).

Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare provider before your COMPLERA is all gone. – Do not stop taking COMPLERA without first talking to your healthcare provider. – If you stop taking COMPLERA, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do blood tests regularly to check your HBV infection. Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms you may have after you stop taking COMPLERA.

You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or severe liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking COMPLERA for a long time.

COMPLERA may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how COMPLERA works, and may cause serious side effects. If you take certain medicines with COMPLERA, the amount of COMPLERA in your body may be too low and it may not work to help control your HIV infection. The HIV virus in your body may become resistant to COMPLERA or other HIV medicines that are like it.

How should I take COMPLERA?

COMPLERA can cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about COMPLERA?”

Stay under the care of your healthcare provider during treatment with COMPLERA.

Take COMPLERA exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it.

Always take COMPLERA with a meal. Taking COMPLERA with a meal is important to help get the right amount of medicine in your body. A protein drink does not replace a meal.

Do not change your dose or stop taking COMPLERA without first talking with your healthcare provider. See your healthcare provider regularly while taking COMPLERA.

If you miss a dose of COMPLERA within 12 hours of the time you usually take it, take your dose of COMPLERA with a meal as soon as possible. Then, take your next dose of COMPLERA at the regularly scheduled time. If you miss a dose of COMPLERA by more than 12 hours of the time you usually take it, wait and then take the next dose of COMPLERA at the regularly scheduled time.

Do not take more than your prescribed dose to make up for a missed dose.

New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure, can happen in some people who take COMPLERA. Your healthcare provider should do blood tests to check your kidneys before starting treatment with COMPLERA. If you have had kidney problems in the past or need to take another medicine that can cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider may need to do blood tests to check your kidneys during your treatment with COMPLERA. Depression or mood changes. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms: – feeling sad or hopeless – feeling anxious or restless – have thoughts of hurting yourself (suicide) or have tried to hurt yourself

Change in liver enzymes. People with a history of hepatitis B or C virus infection or who have certain liver enzyme changes may have an increased risk of developing new or worsening liver problems during treatment with COMPLERA. Liver problems can also happen during treatment with COMPLERA in people without a history of liver disease. Your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your liver enzymes before and during treatment with COMPLERA.

Bone problems can happen in some people who take COMPLERA. Bone problems include bone pain, softening or thinning (which may lead to fractures). Your healthcare provider may need to do additional tests to check your bones.

Changes in body fat can happen in people taking HIV medicine. These changes may include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (“buffalo hump”), breast, and around the main part of your body (trunk). Loss of fat from the legs, arms and face may also happen. The cause and long term health effect of these conditions are not known.

Changes in your immune system (Immune Reconstitution Syndrome) can happen when you start taking HIV medicines. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. Tell your healthcare provider if you start having new symptoms after starting your HIV medicine.

Fillmore’s Future at Odds Christiana Lilly

christiana.lilly@gmail.com

With plans to renovate the 52-acre Miami Beach Convention Center and its surrounding space, lovers of the arts are afraid a local gem will crumble. The Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theater has been a mainstay for art since 1950, when renowned acts such as The Dick Clark Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, and of course Jackie Gleason graced the stage. With plans to revive the area, two developers are duking it

out with their own plans. One, South Beach ACE — a conglomeration of three firms — wants to renovate The Fillmore and take it back to its former glory, when it was the filming spot for Jackie Gleason. The other, Portman-CMC — another conglomeration, which includes Cirque du Soleil as one of its partners — wants to incorporate the acrobatic act into the

theater’s future, along with what the Gleason already offers. “If you look at the historical images of the building, it was a much more kind of classic, Miami modern building,” Jason Long, an associate at OMA, a part of South Beach ACE, said. “That building, a lot of the architecture there in Miami Beach is a big part of the reason why the beach has maintained a certain kind of character, even with the more recent development that’s been taking place there over the last decade.” The next public meeting on the matter is May 14, and the city will choose a firm in June. For some locals, the latter plan is devastating. Lauren Reskin, owner of Sweat Records in Miami, believes that it will be the end of The Fillmore, as do more than 1,000 people who follow her Facebook page Save the Fillmore. “The thought of losing a venue like The Fillmore, which is incredibly unique in its capacity as well as being a historical building was just something I couldn’t stand for,” Reskin said. Originally, Portman-CMC was going to demolish the aged building and replace it with a smaller venue, mainly for its partner, Cirque du Soleil. However, the firm has since changed its mind to instead renovate the building, including installing a Jukari facility where visitors can team up with a Cirque du Soleil professional to learn gymnastics. Portman-CMC also wants to put in an educational center for the performing arts. Supporters of South Beach ACE’s plan are still not satisfied though — Reskin and

others fear that with the mega performance taking up valuable booking time, it’ll be difficult to get in the shows that Miamians are used to getting at the Fillmore. “Now that they’ve changed their opinion on bulldozing the building due to the public outcry, Cirque du Soleil is still one of their main partners and they still want to have Cirque du Soleil programming at that venue. Our movement is about keeping it as a concert venue,” Reskin said. “I just really don’t see it being feasible to have Cirque du Soleil coexisting with anywhere near as good of a concert roster as what’s currently happening here.” Art Murphy, spokesman for PortmanCMC, said that this is not the case, and that Cirque du Soleil is currently working with Live Nation to discuss programming should the plan go through. “We think there’s enough flexibility for Cirque du Soleil to work with Live Nation to enhance the collaboration of the Gleason,” he said. In a press release from the firm, Jack Portman, vice chairman of Portman Holdings and John Portman & Associates, said that public input has been important. “The Miami Beach community has been very vocal in public meetings, in the media and online. The residents made it clear that The Jackie Gleason Theater is an important landmark they want to keep. We listened, we heard, and we’ve found a way to adjust the master plan in order to keep the theater in place while still achieving our other objectives, creating a win-win for all,” he said.

festival for LBT women, the largest in the U.S., takes place on Miami Beach from Wednesday, May 15 to Sunday, May 19, 2013. The nonprofit Aqua Foundation for Women (AFW) organizes Aqua Girl, and anticipates 10,000 guests from South Florida, as well as from across the U.S. and abroad, to visit fourteen events over five days. In an email interview with SFGN, Robin Schwartz, executive director of AFW, discussed the reasons for Aqua Girl’s success. “In large part, it’s due to the excellent leadership of Alison Burgos who created [the event]. Also, there is no place quite like South Beach… More than half of those who attend Aqua Girl come from outside of Florida to enjoy the fun and sun that only Miami and Miami Beach can offer.” Another incentive is that the event is a way for LBT women to help each other. All of Aqua Girl’s proceeds go towards supporting the LBT women’s community in South Florida through scholarships to LBT women, grants to LGBT organizations, and other programs. “Although the women come for a good time, they also like that they are contributing to a good cause,” said Schwartz.

For the first time, Aqua Foundation for Women will celebrate its annual VIP cocktail reception in Fort Lauderdale. On May 11, Aqua Girl will celebrate 14 years at the private residence of J. Michael Heider and Thom Carr. The upscale cocktail party will feature appetizers and an open bar for guests. Robin Schwartz, executive director of Aqua Girl, said it’s more than just a networking event. “It’s an opportunity for the LGBT community to come together and enjoy an evening,” Schwartz said. “We very much welcome our gentlemen friends to join the women of our community for this lovely evening.” Along with the food and drink, the event will hand out a multitude of awards, including the Broward Community Leader and Volunteer of the Year awards. Schwartz hopes many will take note of Aqua Girl’s work in South Florida. “We give grants, scholarships and awards services to Broward County,” Schwartz said. “But many in the community are not aware of this so we hope those who attend the event will learn more about our work.” The Aqua Foundation for Women is a not-for-profit foundation that serves “as the funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality in South Florida through grants, scholarships, and

Giving Matters More Than Getting SFGN Sponsors You Can Play night with Marlins

There are two fundamental reasons why I first started the Express Gay News in 1999, and then the South Florida Gay News, in 2010. My primary aspiration was to illuminate the lives and passions, and the accomplishments and achievements of the LGBT community. I wanted to show we are all a part of the larger society around us, not

20

// 5.8.2013 // SFGN.com //

apart from it. Straight or gay, black or white, we all share a lot more in common than we do apart. Our community needs to sustain a credentialed newspaper that shows what gays and lesbians do in the daytime with their clothes on, not who we do in the nighttime. That is nobody’s business but our own, whether you put jelly on your belly or

soflagaynews //

lace up with leather. Stay the hell out of my bedroom, and I will stay the hell out of your church. What I have learned over three decades as a gay activist is the gay community has had to do a lot of things on its own. In the very first stages of the AIDS epidemic, no one anywhere would help us except ourselves. The very first meeting of HIV advocates was held in the basement of the Marlin Beach Hotel in 1984 on A1A. It was at the location where Beach Place is now. There were all of 8 people there, and a President of the United States who refused to use the word AIDS in public. 29 years later, in 2013, there was an AIDS walk on the same beach that drew thousands of participants and raised nearly one million dollars. We have come a long way. Though AIDS has become a scourge and epidemic that has stolen so many of our lives too soon and too young, it was gay men who first spoke out and fought back, often alone. In those early days, no major corporations underwrote public initiatives to raise awareness about the spreading virus. Usually, it was bar owners and drag queens hosting fundraisers or cutting edge activists from ACT UP speaking out in public forums. They raised funds, stood up, and awoke an inert nation. We have gone from apathy to awareness. A bit older now, many of those good people still have homes and their hearts in our community. The LGBT community has more stars in its rainbow than the Pride Center could ever honor with its yearly awards ceremony. Our community has forged an iron will and developed organizations that give, care, and reach out. ‘Our Fund,’ a foundation that unites the LGBT community, has created a vehicle for planned giving to these groups. They just published a pocket-sized guide titled “Making the Connection.” It is a small book but has a large reach. They are able to list 28 local non-profits you can support. SFGN is here to empower those who embrace and empower us. We want to give back. We are still a business. We want to give to charities, but not become one. You can’t just give away print ads and stay in business, anymore than you can give

away your mortgage money and remain in your home. If another paper wants to sell ads for a hundred bucks a page, I can’t stop them. But you get what you pay for. At SFGN, we announced this week a new multimedia partnership with CNN. You can also read SFGN’s original content on the Sun Sentinel website, another media partner. Our own website releases a dozen new articles daily. SFGN is affiliated with the Florida Press Association and the Associated Press. We use professional journalists, and research investigative stories. Credibility and content are our watchwords, but social commitment remains our fundamental principle. Next month, we are collaborating with a host of local non-profits to launch a major community partnership night with the Miami Marlins. On June 14, we will be promoting our first annual ‘You Can Play’ Night, promoting an organization that fights homophobia in sports. It will be a major statement by our LGBT community that we are taking a stand. Let’s fill the stadium with pride. The “You Can Play” Project, which we will be talking about for the next four weeks, grew out of a young gay hockey player’s life story. We illuminated his life but sadly, had to write about his death in the first few issues of SFGN, back in 2010. Brendan Burke worked as a manager in the locker room with the Toronto Maple Leafs. His dad was the general manager. He was gay and supported by the whole team.

Everyone was devastated when he was killed in an auto accident on his way home from a college class. The ‘You Can Play’ project emerged from his passing. Beginning this year, I created a new position here at SFGN. It should have been written about when other staff changes were made, because this is as important as any we can make. John Fugate was moved from commercial promotions to Community Outreach Director. Giving is the only way to live. John brings to the position enthusiasm, energy, and a passion for life and caring. If you want to reach out to him, get tickets, or find out information about how you can be part of this adventure, contact him at our office. He is the guy in charge of making it happen. Join with the other media partners we will also profile in the next few weeks. Show again that the LGBT community reaches people who care. If you can’t go, buy a dozen tickets for others like Kids in Distress, who can rent a bus for their own children who can go. If you don’t like baseball, buy twodozen tickets for us to give away to someone who loves baseball but can’t afford to go. This column is for every one of you who have ever stood up and helped out, whether on a bicycle, AIDS walk, or working a booth at PrideFest. Once again, it falls upon us to make a difference. Once again, we will rise to the occasion.

It’s our differences that make us great. No matter what you value, we’re here to protect it with respect and professionalism. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. CALL AN AGENT OR VISIT US ONLINE TODAY. ®

My HIV Diary

“e safe return of your money is our top priority.”

On the Brink of a Cure … Again

10

Danish doctors are conducting clinical trials to test a “novel strategy” in which the HIV virus is stripped away from human DNA. Photo courtesy of Tulane PR

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 35

(April 26 to May 2) When I set out on this journey, the goal of taking these medications was to better my life and hopefully be a small part in helping others on down the road. The goal of a healthier me has been reached. I was undetectable within two weeks, and my CD4 count stands at over 900. As far as what I’m doing to help the future – who knows? Apparently we’re close to a cure … again. I don’t get as excited about cure news as I did nearly five years ago. I think I’ve been enlightened to the fact that I don’t think I will ever be cured. I don’t get my hopes up anymore. Yes, I do have faith in medicine and technology, but just like my faith, everything has its limits. Danish doctors are conducting clinical

trials to test a “novel strategy” in which the HIV virus is stripped away from human DNA. They are expecting that these studies will show that “finding a mass-distributable and affordable cure to HIV is possible.” While the news is promising, they were only testing human cells in petri dishes, not in live subjects. I don’t understand why they would announce their findings before we even know if the treatment will work inside a host. Fifteen patients are currently taking part in the trials, and if they are found to have successfully been cured of HIV, the “cure” will be tested on a wider scale. Yes, their work is most likely going to prove to be invaluable, but what if it fails? If it fails, you just spent months getting the hopes up of people who are ill all over the world for nothing. My hopes were toyed with for nothing. In my opinion, and take it for what it’s worth, the best way to combat HIV is out on the streets and not locked up in a lab somewhere. I’d like to see more money spent on prevention and a vaccine than on cure studies. It would be so much easier to have an AIDS free generation if children could be given a vaccine at birth. Fight HIV out on the streets and in the bedrooms where it lives. Educate and inoculate – that’s my motto.

Real, Raw, Awkward

Michael Urie on his upcoming film Gary M. Kramer garyk@att.net

Michael Urie Photo courtesy of Gravitas Ventures

Director Michael Urie’s awkward, uncomfortable and funny showbiz comedy “He’s Way More Famous Than You” showcases Halley Feiffer as an unemployed indie film actress grappling with her lack of celebrity. When her boyfriend Michael (Michael Chernus) leaves her, Halley turns her to her gay brother Ryan (Ryan Spahn) to make “The Untitled Greenlight Halley Feiffer Vehicle Promo Trailer Project” in which they play lovers. Ryan’s boyfriend, Michael Urie (Spahn’s real life boyfriend) reluctantly agrees to direct the film. Urie chatted with SFGN about directing “He’s Way More Famous Than You.” GMK: The film’s humor is awkward, uncomfortable, and often very funny. How do you describe your sense of humor, and what comic bits did you play up in the film? MU: We wanted to set up the audience to think one thing was going to happen but then have something else happen. We didn’t want anyone’s expectations to be fulfilled. We did not want to be afraid of the extreme. We wanted to make the outrageous not outrageous — go all the way, and not be afraid to find the funny in the extreme. I like the screwball aspect of the film. I love the idea that the celebrities walk on almost

by accident. It’s like we almost did not tell Vanessa Williams or Ben Stiller they were on a set. GMK: Your character has a line that it takes heart, not celebrity, to make a movie great. Do you believe that? Where is your heart in this film? MU: The heart lies with Halley’s relationship with their brother Ryan, and the two of them doing something together. It is a story about alcoholism and ambition and we wanted to strike a true chord. The audience should either be laughing, crying, or horrified. GMK: Halley films herself constantly. What do you think your film says about our obsession with celebrity and filming ourselves? MU: Why are people posting crazy things on YouTube and Facebook? Ryan [in real life] says it’s like starring in your own movie, and for folks not in acting, or not in the public eye, it is a release to show yourself to everyone you know. Halley in the movie is not finding the outlets she needs as an actor, which is why she’s obsessed with filming and being famous. She’s a narcissist. It’s not true of all actors. We wanted to comment on celebrity/fame-obsessed culture, and the “me” soflagaynews //
