According to the gossip website, Sheen dropped the F-bomb during the opening of his new bar at the El Ganzo Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Sheen later apologized for the comment. “I meant no ill will and intended to hurt no one and I apologize if
I offended anyone,” he said in a response to TMZ. “I meant to say maggot but I have a lisp.” Among the attendees at the event were Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. The sports network broadcast a kiss between a bowling athlete & husband
It was only a moment of celebration, but that might have just been enough to make history in the often homophobic world of sports. ESPN is getting praise from gay sports websites like Outsports for broadcasting what could be the kiss of a gay athlete and his husband on a sports
network. Scott Norton, a professional bowling player, was seen holding his head in his hands and crying after winning the 2012 PBA Chameleon Bowling Championship in Las Vegas; moments later he kissed and hugged his husband, Craig Woodward. According to Outsports, ESPN’s announcers referred to Woodward as Norton’s husband or spouse during the telecast.

Norton, whose mother is Hall of Fame bowler Virginia Norton, came out in May of 2011. “It is extremely important for me to come out to show other gay athletes, both current and future, that it is important to come out to show that we are just like everyone else,” he said at the time. “Being gay doesn’t define who I am as a person or as a professional athlete.”

Girl says she was assaulted by group of yeshiva boys for her looks A lesbian teen was stoned by a group of orthodox Jewish boys while walking down the street allegedly for her “lesbian looks,” she said. The attack took place on Dec. 30, 2012.
According to Yediot Aharonot, an Israeli daily, the 17-year-old was hit in the face and bruised by the stones. “I was wearing my headphones and I passed a bus stop for yeshiva boys. There was a small group there. I passed them by and a few seconds later I started hearing yelling … They were yelling ‘lesbian’ and ‘is it a boy or a girl?’ and then they started throwing rocks at me,” the girl, who decided to remain unnamed, said.

“Why did they mob me? They were judging me based on my appearance – and they were right, the way I look isn’t misleading – but the fact that a woman has a short hairdo doesn’t mean anything.” She and her mother have filed a complaint with the Israeli police. Israel currently has laws protecting LGBT people against discrimination.

Senator Barney Frank? Gay former Congressman seeks interim
N
ewly retired Rep. Barney Frank revealed on Friday that he would like to serve as a temporary successor to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the secretary of state nominee. Frank told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that he had asked Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint him to serve as the state’s interim senator until a special election is held to fill Kerry’s seat. “Coach, put me in,” Frank said Friday, one day after his 32-year career in the House ended. A spokeswoman for Patrick said the governor had no immediate comment. Under state law, the Democratic governor will be required to fill the seat with an interim appointment if the Senate confirms Kerry as secretary of state. The special
election would then be scheduled between 145 days and 160 days — about five months — after Kerry’s departure. Frank previously had said he didn’t want the appointment. But the 72-year-old Democrat, who served 16 terms and headed the House Financial Services Committee, noted Friday that the fiscal cliff deal that was reached earlier this week to avoid tax cuts on most Americans also means that major spending decisions will be made in next few months, and he would like to be involved in that. “A few weeks ago, in fact, I said I wasn’t interested, which is kind of like you’re about to graduate, and they said ‘You have to go to summer school,’” Frank told MSNBC. “That deal now means that February, March and April are going to be
among the most important months in American financial (history).” Patrick has made clear that he planned to choose an interim senator who was not interested in running in the special election. The winner of that race would serve out the remainder of Kerry’s term, which ends after the 2014 election. Frank said he has no interest in running in the special election. “I wouldn’t want to do anything more. I don’t want to run again,” he said. Michael Dukakis, the former governor and the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee, and Victoria Kennedy, widow of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, have been among other names mentioned as possible interim senators.

Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Network to award $1,200 By Lulu Ramadan

The 1,000 to 1,200 word essay contest will be due between Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, and is open to any student currently enrolled in Florida International University College of Law, Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center, St. Thomas University School of Law, or University of Miami School of Law. The winner will be announced on March 1. Kolner hopes that writing the essay will bring attention and awareness to the problem of bullying for LGBT youth. “By talking about it and exposing the idea and airing it out, it can only help,” Kolner said. In addition to winning the scholarship award, the winning essay will be published in The Florida Bar News — the official newspaper of the Florida Bar. The winning student will also present their essay at one of GLLN’s monthly luncheons, where the organization brings local lawyers and judges as guest speakers to talk about issues facing the legal community. President of GLLN Lea Krauss believes having the winning student read their essay at the luncheon will be beneficial to the entire community on an emotional level. “We’re hoping to gain insight on the issue,” Krauss said. “Hopefully it will be a cathartic experience, whether it be for other law students who attend the luncheon or the students themselves that go through the exercise and get something from the essay contest.” The 1,000-1,200 word essays and applications must be postmarked and mailed to 2301 Wilton Dr., Suite 3, Wilton Manors, FL 33305 between January 26 and February 2. For application and more details about the GLLN, visit GLLN.org. Photo Courtesy of Neil Kolner.
n the early 70’s, LGBT lawyers didn’t exist. Now, law students in South Florida have a chance to fund their education by writing about the very topic that would have prevented them from practicing law decades ago. Neil D. Kolner sits on the board of Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Network (GLLN) as vice president and education czar. For over four years now, GLLN has provided LGBT and gayfriendly lawyers, judges, and law students with a network to form relationships and assist each other in the legal community. “To be openly gay in the ‘80’s when I went to law school was almost unheard of,” Kolner said. “It wasn’t until the late ‘70’s that the Florida Supreme Court said that you were allowed to become a member of the Florida Bar if you were a homosexual.” For the first year, Kolner has proposed and organized a scholarship essay contest specifically for law students through the GLLN. His chosen theme is, “How to Deal with Bullying, or How I learned to survive as a Sexual Minority,” according to the application. “The concept of bullying is a huge one and it affects LGBT youth specifically. Writing the essay will allow students that have been impacted to share their experiences with a larger community and a sympathetic community.” Kolner said. Law students in South Florida will pour emotion and experience onto their pages and raise awareness about bullying for a scholarship award of $1,200. “We’re judging on the basis of originality, imagination, emotional impact, and quality of their writing,” Kolner said.

“Boca Bigots” Campaign May Return City Council Continues to Postpone Equal Rights By Dylan Bouscher
F
lorida’s youngest gay city official didn’t wait long after his appointment to make waves in Boca Raton. During his first community relations board meeting last December, teenage Boca resident Tyler Morrison gained unanimous support for a recommendation to the city council. Their recommendation? Revoke the city ordinance that makes Boca the only city in its county to forgo protecting its LGBT employees, and update the city’s now 47-year-old anti-discrimination policy. The city ordinance also removes protections for other minority groups and women as well, according to human rights and equal employment advocates. “There was really no reason not to,” Morrison told SFGN afterward. “I didn’t feel uncomfortable with it… after reading all the information I needed to read, after being surprised by some of the things that weren’t included, there was no question in my mind they should be at least talked about.” Morrison first spoke out against the city council’s lack of protections last November. Then in December, applied and was appointed unanimously to the community relations board by the same council members he blasted a month earlier. The recommendation won’t be official before mid-January, according to Morrison. “Hopefully it won’t drag on more than a few months,” Morrison said. But the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC) and the Anti-Defamation League have been urging the city council to take these actions since last September, according to PBCHRC president Rand Hoch. “Every minority, and women, are affected by what the city of Boca Raton did in January of 2011,” Hoch said. He’s referring to the city council passing Ordinance 5161, which opted the city out of LGBT protections provided by Palm Beach County’s anti-discrimination policy. The PBCHRC learned about the city’s lack of protections when a $200,000 hazardous waste contract between the county and city nearly violated the county’s policy of not doing business with entities that do not adhere to its anti-discrimination policy. “The LGBT community, we’re the only ones that are unprotected, because the only law that protected us was the county law,”
Hoch said. So to keep the contract from being nullified, the city council adopted it with an exception to protect LGBT employees working under it. But the city has yet to expand the same protection to the rest of its employees, or to offer domestic partner benefits to its employees, which is another major concern to Hoch.
The city’s employee handbook also states family coverage is available, but the employee pays the costs of covering dependents. So the city does not protect LGBTs in its decades old anti-discrimination policy, and does not offer dependent insurance to its employees. But state and federal anti-discrimination policies do not include protection for sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender
Tyler Morrison
“It’s not going to cost them any more money, to offer insurance to domestic partners and the children of domestic partners,” Hoch said. “They can’t say ‘well we can’t afford to spend the money to insure domestic partners‘… The only reason they would deny domestic partners to be treated the same way as spouses was the city was anti-gay. There‘s no other reason.”

expression either. And that makes what the city of Boca is doing legal, according to Boca Mayor Susan Whelchel. “We’ve complied with state and federal law,” Whelchel said at an October city council meeting. She declined to clarify her comments after the meeting. But Hoch did not stop there, he asked Pam Guerrier, Director of the Palm Beach County
Office of Equal Opportunity for a second opinion about the city‘s policy. “The option for African Americans, women and other minorities to utilize the services provided by this office are no longer available since the City opted out of the County’s Equal Employment Ordinance,” Guerrier wrote in a letter to Hoch. She also explains minorities and women had the option to file charges of discrimination from 1995 until the opt-out ordinance was passed around Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2011. Then Hoch forwarded her letter with one of his own to Boca City Manager Leif Ahnell, explaining he was not alone in his interpretation of the opt-out ordinance. “Your staff’s inaction has denied the City of Boca Raton the opportunity to finally remove this stain on the City in time for this year’s celebration of the birth of Dr. King,” Hoch noted in his letter. “Frankly, it is difficult to comprehend how your staff could allow this matter to drag on this long, considering the consequences to both the City and to each of you individually. (Do you really want the word “bigot” to continue to appear on the very first page of a Google search your names?)” The next city council meeting came after SFGN went to press. Visit SFGN.com for the latest updates. Morrison was set to speak at it, not as a community relations board member though. He’s the newest member of the PBCHRC’s Board of Directors, and planned to address the council as such. But because the city council advertises votes on ordinances for two weeks prior to them, and because the council hasn’t advertised a vote on rescinding Ordinance 5161, nothing will most likely have changed after the meeting. “My thought is that we reinstate the ‘Boca Bigots Run City Hall’ campaign if no progress is made at the next city council meeting,” Hoch wrote in an email to other members of the PBCHRC. But Hoch remains hopeful the city will change. “A combination of what Tyler is doing as an individual, the community relations board is doing as a government entity, the PBCHRC is doing in terms of educating the people of Boca Raton, I think that’s going to affect change,” Hoch said. “And change will occur in 2013.”

ChamberChat A Look Back at 2012 Monthly Column From The GFLGLCC
By Joey Amato
L
ast year was a busy and highly productive year for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce - GFLGLCC. Their membership grew significantly in addition to gaining eight media partners and nine community partners. The GFLGLCC’s exclusive relationship with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC)
8
allowed the Chamber to offer many unique benefits and opportunities to members. Take a look below for a sampling of what the GFLGLCC accomplished in 2012: In January, the Chamber moved to its first “official” office. Later that month, President/ CEO Keith Blackburn took part in an NGLCC teleconference headed by NGLCC CoFounder & President, Justin Nelson after his
meeting with Vice President Biden. Export Import Bank Chairman, Fred Hochberg, and other senior officials discussed major economic themes from the 2012 State of the Union address and what they mean for the LGBT and allied business community. In February, the Chamber was an active member of community events, having sponsored the 2012 GLBT Travel Expo Tour Fort Lauderdale, and attending both Palm Beach Pride and GLBT Expo in New York City. In early March, Blackburn traveled to ITB in Berlin, Germany to promote LGBT travel to Greater Fort Lauderdale. In May, Blackburn took part in an NGLCC Real Estate Teleconference. On the call, diversity and industry experts from JPMorgan Chase, Freddie Mac, and Fannie Mae, discussed how businesses within the real estate industry can benefit through participation in the Supplier Diversity Initiative (SDI). Great insights were gained, which could greatly benefit those in the real estate industry. Later that month, the Chamber participated in a hand-delivered letter to President Obama -with the NGLCC and other affiliate chambers, thanking him for his support of Marriage Equality. The Chamber was an official sponsor of “Beach Bear Weekend” which helped raise money for Sun Serve while board members represented the GFLGLCC at Miami Beach Gay Pride, Gay Days Orlando Expo, St. Pete Pride and Stonewall Summer Pride. The summer brought more exciting events as the Chamber hosted a packed launch party for SouthFloridaFun.com at Dapur and Blackburn moderated a session at the Florida Diversity Council’s Inaugural GLBTAllies Diversity Summit, which took place at the Pride Center. President/CEO Blackburn and Board Members Steve McAleer, Alan Beck and Todd Bludworth attended the NGLCC National Business & Leadership Conference in Chicago. Blackburn then traveled to Las Vegas for the Gay Days Las Vegas Trade Expo. Blackburn took part in the historical, first U.S. Government backed LGBT Trade Mission and the inaugural LGBT Summit of the Americas in Bogotá Colombia, where he met with Michael McKinley, U.S. Ambassador to Colombia. For the second year, the Chamber sponsored the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, as well as a benefit for the Stonewall National Museum and Archives held at the iL Lugano Hotel and Residences. Blackburn attended the 13th Annual Community Marketing & Insights (CMI)
Conference in San Francisco along with Board Member Alan Beck and Rickard Gray, the newly appointed Managing Director of the LGBT Market for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). In November, Blackburn, McAleer and Beck attended the first-ever Federal Procurement Fair for LGBT businesses at the Department of Commerce in Washington, DC. Acting Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank spoke to the attendees. 12 Federal agencies were represented, all looking to do business with our LGBT Certified members. The group met with the Small Business Administration Deputy Administrator, Eugene Cornelius Jr. The fair was designed to connect LGBTowned businesses with the over $400 billion the federal government spends annually on goods and services, of which nearly $100 billion is with small business suppliers. At the fair, NGLCC announced significant memorandums with federal agencies, deepening collaboration with government leaders to bring resources, access, and new opportunities to your business.
While in D.C., the group, joined by Board member Todd Bludworth attended the NGLCC's 10th Anniversary National Dinner: Beyond Expectations at the National Building Museum. This coincided with the official opening for the NGLCC Supplier Innovation Center, where U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Karen Mills performed the ribbon cutting honors. Finally the Chamber announced that their inaugural Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay Travel Guide will be published in early 2013 and have a circulation of 10,000 copies and a worldwide distribution. LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Obamacare Article: ‘Thoughtful and Informative’ By Kevin P. Hanaway
S
ean McShee’s article on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare was thoughtful and informative. Thank you for the information and thoughts that are particularly helpful for our GLBT community. In Table 1 I believe the Eligibility Ends amount was meant to reflect 400 percent amounts but did not. Having studied the ACA, hereafter I will refer to it as Obamacare, I believe it is none too nuanced to say Obamacare is too complex, or that “we do not have enough information” as is quoted in the article by Anthony Johnson. While I think Anthony is correct (specific to the HIV community) that more information will need to come, in general Obamacare is clearly a step in the right direction! Also, the idea that the entirety of Obamacare needs to be clear to anyone who takes a quick glance at it, I believe, is asking way too much! Many politicians, among
10
others, have taken the view that it is easier to say Obamacare is confusing rather than sit down and study it, or better yet ask a professional. While Obamacare is complex, the document of the ACA, is rather clear. Of course, interpretation of Obamacare is complex, but it is clearly the right direction. For example, the US Constitution is simple and needs to be practically appreciated and understood by most citizenry, yet we still benefit from the expertise of lawyers who specialize in constitutional law. The ACA is no different. Two parts of Obamacare deserve special praise from the GLBT community. First, since the GLBT community has been, and continues to be marginalized by many, Obamacare cares for many, GLBTs and others, who have been marginalized in society, i.e. the poor, sexual minorities, women, and others. Obamacare has made
it a moral & ethical reality that affordable healthcare will be available to all! Second, in a cursory reading of the Obamacare (ACA), it is not at all difficult to find how services focused on GLBTs could be supplied and funded since there are specific funding sources for community health facilities and initiatives. There is a ton of money here! Community based health initiatives will spring up and be funded where there are needs, not only for GLBTs, but for all communities who have specific needs. The bottom line: now everyone is invited to the healthcare table, not just those who can afford it. Kevin P. Hanaway, MA MBA MDiv MSN RN. Hanaway is an advanced practice nurse and regular priest presider at the local Dignity-Fort Lauderdale chapter for Catholic GLBTs.

Hamstring Have a seat on the floor facing the wall and position your heels securely on the TRX. Lift your body up with your arms. Hands can either face forward toward or away from the wall whichever is more comfortable. Position yourself far enough away from the wall so that your legs are straight. In a back and forth motion, pull your knees as close into your chest as possible. Repeat this exercise in three sets of fifteen to twenty reps.

Rear Fly “T”

Grab the TRX with both hands and face the wall. Have your hands together with palms facing each other. Keep your back straight and extend your arms out with your elbows slightly bent. “Fly” your arms back and forth in a controlled motion. Squeeze your back muscles together when you extend your arms out. Standing closer to the wall creates more resistance and the farther away you stand creates less. Repeat this exercise in three sets of fifteen to twenty reps.

Grab the TRX bands in each hand and face away from the wall. Lean forward with your elbows slightly bent with your arms extended wide. Keep your back straight and push your arms forward so that they meet in the middle, your palms should face each other. Squeeze your chest muscles as your hands come together. Because you’re using your own body weight you can control your resistance level. Standing closer to the wall creates more resistance and the more forward you stand creates less. In a controlled motion, slowly go back into starting position. Be careful not to relax quickly into the wide arm stance. Not only can you injure yourself with a quick, sporadic movement; by going slower and controlling the entire motion you’re still working out your muscles as you “relax” back into starting position. Repeat this exercise in three sets of fifteen to twenty reps.

Top 10 Coming Outs of 2012
The courageous people that helped gain visibility for the LGBT community By Sergio N. Candido revealed his first love had been a man in a blog post last July. Ocean’s coming out in the often-homophobic business of rap and hip-hop music is living proof that things are getting better for the LGBT community.

Puerto Rican boxer Orlando Cruz
Boxer Orlando Cruz knocked off the boxing world when he announced he was a “proud gay man” in October. According to the Associated Press, Cruz is believed to be the first professional boxer to come out as gay while still competing. “I developed physically and mentally to take such a big step in my life and in my profession, which is boxing, knowing that it would have pros and cons, highs and lows in this sport that is so macho," Cruz told the AP. "I kept this hidden for many, many years.” The Puerto Rican boxer, ranked among the top in the world in the featherweight division, made the announcement in the heels of his fight with Mexican boxer Jorge Pazos for the WBO Latino title. Cruz won the fight unanimously. “I've been fighting for more than 24 years and as I continue my ascendant career, I want to be true to myself,” he said. “I have always been and always will be a proud gay man.”

Journalist Anderson Cooper
While many thought the news would be a turnoff for many fans, people appreciated his bravery. The media attention he received, coupled with his talent, put him at the top of the music charts this year. He was the bestselling artist for U.K. music retailer HMV, was named MTV person of the year, and received six Grammy nominations. CNN news anchor and war correspondent Anderson Cooper publicly announced he’s gay in a letter to long-time friend writer Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast last July. Sullivan wrote that, knowing that Cooper was gay, he asked him for his outlook on how the visibility of gay people was paramount for the LGBT community to gain full equal rights. Cooper responded by coming out of the closet and explaining why he didn’t publicly talk about his sexual orientation before. “The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” Cooper wrote.

Matrix director Lana Wachowski
Larry is now Lana. One of the Wachowski brothers, Larry, known for directing the blockbuster trilogy “The Matrix,” became the first major Hollywood director to publicly come out as transgender in late July. The 47-year-old director revealed her transition while promoting her latest film, “Cloud Atlas,” The New York Post reported. A trailer of the movie showed Lana introducing the film with her brother, Andy Wachowski, and director Tom Tykwer. “Hi, I’m Lana,” she’s seen saying, with her hair styled in pink dreadlocks, a reminiscent to that of Milla Jovovich in “The Fifth Element.” Before transitioning, Wachowski had actually been married for over 10 years. Lana Wachowski revealed she had struggled with her sexuality from a young age, and even contemplated suicide before transitioning during a speech she gave while accepting the Visibility Award at the Human Rights Campaign annual gala in October.
partner for six years and she’s never met him. It wasn’t acceptable for her, and we never talk about it when we see each other,” Davis, now 34, a former defensive back for the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins, told SFGN. “The idea of masculinity is something that people grew up with in the black community. That makes you question, can I grow up strong black gay man? They think you’re weak, effeminate. It’s a black community problem, not a black MSM problem,” he said. Davis came out publicly in an interview with Out Sports last June. He now works providing LGBT youth with support and advice at the Hetrick-Martin Institute in New York.

Former NFL Player Wade Davis
When former NFL player Wade Davis came out to his sister almost eight years ago, she made a comment saying she was going to be their parents’ favorite from now on. When he approached his mother, she told him that being gay is an “abomination” and that “you already have enough being black.” “That process was very hard; me and my mother are still evolving. Astronaut Sally Ride
Sally Ride, the first American woman to be in outer space, came out posthumously in a letter after battling and succumbing to pancreatic cancer last July. According to The Washington Post, she now makes history, not only for being the first U.S. woman to be launched into space, but she was also the first gay person to do so. Ride had been in a relationship with a woman for the last 27 years, before that, she had been married to a man. It is believed that she never publicly addressed her sexuality prior to her death at the age of 61, after a 17-month battle with cancer. In December, a NASA spacecraft crash landing site on the moon was renamed in honor of the lesbian astronaut.

Newspaper Owner Kevin McClatchy
Kevin McClatchy, the former owner of baseball team the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the current head of the media conglomerate under his name -- which includes The Miami Herald -- came out in September. “I'm sure people will criticize me because I came out later, and I should have come out while I was in baseball and in the thick of it,” McClatchy told the New York Times, adding that his decision to come out was made in part due to the homophobic climate in baseball. McClatchy, 49, owned the Pirates from 1996 until 2007. “You're not going to solve any problem until you start a dialogue,” he said. “And there's no dialogue right now.”

Australian Rules footballer Jason Ball became the first player in the sport to come out in an effort to wipe out homophobia. And it actually worked pretty well. “It was the one place I never thought I’d be able to come out. Ever. It just felt like a really hostile environment. I worried I’d be bullied, maybe I’d get kicked out of the side, maybe the opposition would treat me differently or I’d get abuse [from supporters] over the fence,” he told The Sunday Age referring to his teammates. ”I didn’t know any footballers who were gay, so I could only assume the worst, and it scared me.” Ball also started a campaign to show an anti-homophobia ad during a major championship game. The petition garnered over 25,000 signatures in a short period of time.
10 Actor Matt Bomer
Perhaps one of the most dazzling actors in television today, Bomer’s coming out has been seen by critics as a risky move for an actor who guns for male leading roles along female characters in big screen movies. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old White Collar star came out in February. Bomer opened up about what it was like for him to spend his high school years closeted and growing up “covering his tracks,” while at a Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network awards ceremony. “When that happens, when you aren't allowed to speak about who you are, one of the most authentic parts of who you are, which is who you love or who you're

Olympic Archer Karen Hultzer
South African archer Karen Hultzer publicly confirmed she is a lesbian while competing at the Olympic Games in London. "I am an archer, middle aged and a lesbian. I am also cranky before my first cup of coffee. None of these aspects define who I am, they are simply part of me,” she told SBNation and Outsports. “I am fortunate that my sexual identity is not an issue, and I don’t suffer the level of discrimination and violence that black lesbians in South Africa do. I look forward to the day when this is a non-issue and as relevant as my eye color or favorite sushi.” According to SBNation, she is the second South African Summer Olympian to come out, following beach volleyball player LeighAnn Naidoo in 2004.

Promiscuous Travelers I
n 1999 the gay politics and lifestyle magazine The Guide published an article, “Postcards from Around the World,” which celebrated gay men as the world’s sexual adventurers. “More than serially-coupled heterosexuals or long-mating lesbians, gay males are the free radicals of social life. Rare is even the ‘monogamous’ gay relationship not peppered by extramural flings. And if homophillic desire is defined by attraction to the same, on another level, it’s characterized by the pursuit of the exotic. All the great pioneers of homosexual identity - Oscar Wilde, Wilhelm Van Gloeden, Andre Gide - were sex tourists.” While heterosexuals “are weighed down by the practical imperatives of ‘proper’ match-making” gay men, “with relationships founded on nothing more than personal magnetics and pleasure, support a richer internal heterogeneity. Take that queer
male lust for variety and throw in the democratization of travel and communications in the late 20th century, and the result is a gay worldwide web of friendship, affection, and sex.” Though The Guide’s author exaggerated straight (and lesbian) monogamy, his depiction of gay male travel habits was spot on. Though The Guide magazine is sadly gone, gay sex tourism remains vital in the 21st century. “What is Gay Sex Tourism?” asks the web site SexTourism.net/gay,

which proceeds to answer its own question: “Sex tourism is the practice of traveling to a domestic or foreign city with the purpose of taking part in sexual activities. Gay sex tourism is simply sex tourism for gays! The types of activities that gay sex tourists participate in vary - some go with the sole intention of having sex with others whereas others only partially go with that intention.” The gay sex tourism industry, we are told, “is a niche tourism market that is starting to catch on more predominantly around the world. As homosexuality is becoming much more acceptable around the world, more and more people are openly taking part in gay sex tourism and it is expected to become a much larger and open industry with new specifically gay sex tour companies opening up all the time.” The Australian historian Robert Aldrich discussed gay sex tourism in the 19th and 20th centuries in his books The Seduction of the Mediterranean: Writing, Art and Homosexual Fantasy (1993) and Colonialism and Homosexuality (2003). Michael T. Luongo collected accounts from more recent gay sex tourists in Between the Palms: A Collection of Gay Travel Erotica (2004), Looking For Love In Faraway Places: Tales of Gay Men’s Romance Overseas (2007) and Gay Travels In the Muslim World (2007).z Berlin publisher Bruno Gmünder Verlag, which knows a thing or two about gay sex and gay tourism, has done its part for gay travel literature with the recent publication of The
Promiscuous Traveler ($17.99), a collection of travel tales by a well traveled gay sex tourist known to us as Sebastian V. “These pages are a diary, a confessional, a record of what happened, to somehow make it all real and permanent. The tales are fantastical and masturbatory, but the facts are as solid and honest and unforgiving as the earth,” Mr. V tells us. “I am a promiscuous traveler. And the title is that on two accounts. The first reason is a little more oblique: I never like to go back to the same place twice. The second is more traditional: I’ve tasted so many different types of men. Young, old, big, small, brown, black, white, straight, gay, or simply just men. I appreciate all the tastes of all the cuisines of the world.” According to Mr. V, his travels have taken him to more than 70 countries – “Even Greenland, even Antarctica” - and he enjoyed sex in most of them. “I’ve had sex on trains, on boats, in speeding cars, [even]in a horse carriage,” he writes. This very promiscuous traveler’s sexual adventures are catholic; that is, universal. They include trysts in such places as Puerto Rico, Estonia, Senegal, Russia, Australia, Ghana. Hawaii, Tahiti, Morocco, Hong Kong, Egypt - even the Magic Kingdom in Orlando. The stories are wellwritten, and they are as interesting as they are stimulating. But are they true? No doubt Mr. V, like most men, exaggerates his sexual conquests. On the other hand, there is no reason for us to doubt him. So let us enjoy The Promiscuous Traveler for what it is, a joyous celebration of gay sex tourism.

GBT equality in the sports world has been two steps forward and one step back since we started Outsports.com in 1999. Jim calls it a zig-zag, never directly forward and never directly back. Whatever the analogy, 2012 offered a ton of hope and a bunch of setbacks.
While there have been some powerful coming out stories in sports this year, one overarching theme defined the LGBT movement in sports in 2012: The emergence of straight voices. While folks like Hudson Taylor and Ben Cohen have been at it for a couple years, dozens of professional athletes – including some of the biggest names in the NFL and NHL – gave interviews and recorded video PSAs in support of gay teammates and samesex marriage this year. Robert Griffin III talked about his gay teammate in high school. Ahman Green opened up about his gay brother and lesbian sister. Dozens of NHL players used You Can Play to say they would support a gay teammate.

June 3
Texas A&M hosted a first-ever academic conference on LGBT sports issues, hosted by George Cunningham. The conference included a summit of sorts of top academic minds, along with several activists.
After making crude jokes about cricket being a “gay” sport, actor Jason Alexander issued possibly the most well-written, sincere apology the LGBT community has ever received.
These are only some of the major highlights and lowlights in the world of sports over the last year:
March 4 Feb. 3 Trying to make waves at the Super Bowl, WFAN’s Mike Francesa reported that then-DenverBroncos-star Tim Tebow had refused an interview with Rosie O’Donnell because of her “lifestyle.” Hours later, Rosie herself reported that she had met Tebow… and tried to set him up with Jenny McCarthy.

Patrick Burke launched the You Can Play project with a spot on NBC. Since the launch, the project has highlighted the support of dozens of NHL players who would warmly welcome a gay teammate. The group has also created the Invisible Athlete Forum, which speaks at schools about issues facing LGBT athletes.
June 14 The first Nike LGBT Sports Summit was held in Portland, Ore., with leaders from across the community meeting to strategize how to end homophobia in sports by 2016. One of the key takeaways: Redefine what it means to be a champion.
May 6 Two months before the U.S. Olympic Trials, former Stanford gymnast Josh Dixon came out publicly on Outsports. The adopted, biracial athlete made it to the 15-man finals but missed a spot on the Olympic team.
June 21 Trans hammer thrower Keelin Godsey narrowly missed a spot on the U.S. women’s track & field team, finishing 11 inches off of the qualifying distance. Godsey would have been the first publicly trans U.S. Olympic athlete.

Out Destination: Seattle, Washington M By Joey Amato
icrosoft, Nordstrom, Amazon. com and Starbucks are just a few of the companies headquartered in Seattle, Washington ¬– The Emerald City. The city boasts a vibrant arts scene, iconic music venues and some of the freshest and delicious food on the west coast. My first stop was a visit to the Seattle Art Museum, a magnificent building located in the heart of downtown. During my visit, the museum was gearing up to host some of its most prestigious exhibitions ever, most notably, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: Treasures of Kenwood House, London. Within the neoclassical Kenwood House on the outskirts of London, resides a magnificent collection known as the Iveagh Bequest, which includes masterpieces by Gainsborough, Hals, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Romney, Turner, Van Dyck, and many others. The Iveagh Bequest was donated to Great Britain by Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh (1847–1927) and heir to the world’s most successful brewery. Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: Treasures of Kenwood House, London, also features Rembrandt’s late Self-Portrait (1665), which has never before left Europe. Another exciting exhibit coming to SAM will be Future Beauty: Thirty Years of Japanese Fashion, a collection of eighty gowns ranging from the classic to the outrageous, by celebrated designers such as Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Kenzo Takada, Junya Watanabe, and Jun Takahashi. The exhibit will also feature runway show videos, artist photographs, and magazines images. Just a short walk from the Seattle Art Museum is Six Seven Restaurant, a glorious ocean-front restaurant offering the freshest seafood in the city. Begin your meal with a pint of Alaskan Summer Ale, which is very affordable and the perfect accompaniment to your meal. Upon recommendation, I opted to try the Smoked Salmon as my starter. The melt-in-your-mouth salmon was the most delicious I’ve ever tasted and was actually caught earlier that morning. Other delectable starters include Jumbo Dungeness Crab and Shrimp Cake with crab lemongrass sauce and tomato jam as well as Braised Beef and Truffle Ravioli made with butternut squash, chanterelles, toasted pine nuts, grilled radicchio in a truffle honey reduction.

Entrees are hearty and plentiful, most notably the Arugula Pesto Brushed Halibut with artichokes, roasted fennel and cherry tomato salad in a lemon vinaigrette. My favorite among the entrees however is the restaurants famous Northwest Bouillabaisse consisting of scallops, halibut, salmon, mussels, saffron potato, crisp calamari and a lemon aioli crouton. You will be asking for extra bread in order to sop up the tasty broth left at the bottom of the bowl.

After a bountiful dinner, check in to the luxurious Hotel Monaco, a boutique hotel featuring modern furnishings and décor, plush linens, evening turndown service and complimentary wireless Internet. The Kimpton property offers a hosted wine reception daily in their lobby as well as a 24hour fitness and business center. Begin your next day with a visit to Pike Place Market, a public market overlooking the Seattle waterfront. Opened in 1907, the market is one of the oldest public farmers' markets in the United States. It is a place of business for many fisherman, farmers, and merchants. Named after the central street, Pike Place, it is one of city’s most popular tourist destinations. While there, be sure to sample some homemade chowder from one of many bustling cafes. Music enthusiasts should be sure to visit Experience Music Project (EMP). The Frank Gehry-designed masterpiece is truly

Right next door to EMP is Seattle’s most iconic landmark, the Space Needle. Head to the observation deck for unobstructed views of the city and the majestic Mt. Rainer. Adjacent to the Space Needle is Chihuly Garden and Glass, a celebration of Seattle glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly. The Exhibition Hall contains eight galleries and three Drawing Walls, offering visitors a comprehensive look at Chihuly’s significant works. The Glasshouse presents a suspended 1,400-piece, 100-foot-long sculpture and the Garden is a backdrop for four other monumental pieces. This venue is a must-see for art lovers. For dinner, head to Capitol Hill, Seattle’s gay neighborhood, and visit any one of
dozens of gay-owned establishments along Broadway. I recommend The Grill on Broadway, known for the best Sunday brunch in town. Mimosas With Mama takes place every Sunday and features some of the best drag performers in town. Visitors looking for a bit of old-world tradition should stay at the Mayflower Hotel. Built in 1927, the property has been restored with crystal chandeliers, gleaming brass and period antiques that offer a uniquely European elegance. Conveniently located to all major Seattle attractions, guestrooms at the Mayflower are beautifully appointed in classic color schemes with custom comforters, drapes and artwork designed and tailored for each hotel room. The hotel also boasts one of the city’s best restaurants, Andaluca. Sample the Roasted Mussels with baby tomatoes, sizzling lemon butter, rosemary and white wine or the delicious Tuscan Tomato Bread Soup with basil crème fraiche. For my entrée, my guest and I shared Andaluca Paella, an oversized portion of prawns, clams, chicken, chorizo, aborio rice, harissa butter served in a saffron broth. Tourists looking for a trendier experience should head to The Hotel Max, a boutique property which provides the platform for both emerging and established Seattle artists and photographers. More than 350 original paintings and photographs are found throughout the hotel in the lobby, guest rooms and corridors. Red Fin restaurant offers eclectic Asian fusion fare and is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Spend your last night in Seattle by visiting any one of the city’s famous LGBT nightspots. Favorites among neighborhood gays include R Place, Neighbors and Q, an ultra-modern dance music venue featuring sleek designs, specialty cocktails, a bourbon lounge and four disco balls to keep the party going all night long. he old adage goes, “Write what you know.” Local playwright Tony Finstrom has done just that with his new play, Back Stage Story, a tale that is based on intrigues he encountered early in his career on New York stages. Art and Advocacy Converge in PBS Documentary
Film Chronicles First Gay Mayor in Key West By J.W. Arnold
T
hroughout most of his career, filmmaker John Mikytuck has managed to combine two passions — his art and a call to advocacy. His documentary, The Newcomer, premiering on WPBT on Jan. 14, is just the latest example. The Newcomer tells the story of Richard Heyman, who made headlines as the first openly gay mayor in the United States when he was elected to lead Key West in 1983. San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk became the first gay elected official in 1977 before he was assassinated a year later and Congressman Gerry Studds was forced to publicly come out in 1983 after an affair with a House page became public. Thirty years later last week, the first openly gay United States Senator, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, was sworn in and dozens of openly gay officials have been elected to Congress, statehouses and city halls across the country. “From Richard’s perspective, I imagine that he didn’t think it would become as big of a deal as it became,” said Mikytuck. “You
could say that Key West was a gay-friendly town, but that doesn’t necessarily translate that it should have a gay mayor. You could say Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach are pretty gay friendly town, but none of them have gay mayors.” Ironically, Heyman’s sexual orientation wasn’t nearly as big an issue for Key West voters as his status as a “newcomer” to the island. Beyond the obvious historical importance of Heyman’s election was a much more compelling story for Mikytuck, a New Jersey native who called Key West home from 2000 until 2006. “I wanted to tell the story about HIV and AIDS and its impact on the community,” he recalled. “As I was doing research on the history I came on the story of Richard.” Mikytuck came across a memoir written by Heyman’s assistant following his death in 2004: “It said he hadn’t been tested for
HIV until 1989 and that got me wondering why,” said Mikytuck, noting Key West had one of the highest infection rates in the country at the time. “From that question, I started to look into Richard’s story and everything I found out is what you see in the documentary.” Beginning in 2009, hours of research
led to interviews and a magazine article. Recognizing the story would make a compelling film, he re-interviewed many of the sources on camera and began a lengthy editing process. The film was shown at several film festivals before Mikytuck began approaching PBS stations. After WPBT expressed interest, he added more interviews, resulting in the final version that will premiere next week, culminating nearly four years of dedication to the project. Mikytuck, now 46, had devoted much of his career to activism, developing educational programs and using his talents to raise awareness about pressing issues within the gay community. An Emmy award-winning journalist, he produced programs for the gay program In the Life and the History Channel. While working on a piece about the growing number of LGBT youth living on the streets and incarcerated in the juvenile justice system, he more recently took a position with a non-profit organization devoted to the cause in New York City. Mikytuck concluded, “My job takes me to different worlds… This is such a problem in our community.” If you want to see The Newcomer, a film by John $ ret be airing on bawill Mikytuck it de: ca o c o prom WPBT2, Monday, Jan. 14, 9 p.m. check local listings.

American Idol’s Biggest “Gay” Controversies The Popular Singing Show Returns Next Week for its 12th Season By Jason Parsley
A
merican Idol’s twelfth season kicks off next week with three new judges at the table after Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler called it quits this past summer. Joining Randy Jackson at the table this year will be Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Keith Urban. Despite last year’s finale being down 32 percent from the 2011 finale, it still attracted 22 million people, making it one of the most watched shows of the year. Only time will tell whether the new judges will infuse new life into the aging show. In advance of the premier on Wednesday, Jan. 16 on FOX, SFGN wanted to take a look back at the biggest gay controversies over the past 12 seasons. Few Idol fans can forget — and even non-fans of the show remember — the controversy surrounding Adam Lambert’s sexuality in Season 8. Lambert kept the world guessing by refusing to discuss his sexual orientation while still on the show. He finally revealed himself to be gay in a Rolling Stone’s cover story shortly after the show wrapped up. Below are 5 other gay controversies over the years that you may or may not remember.
1 David Hernandez This season 7 finalist set the Internet ablaze when it was revealed that he was a former male stripper for three years at Dick’s Cabaret in Phoenix, Arizona where he was reportedly known as “Caden.” FOX did not disqualify him once the revelations came out, but America quickly gave him the boot the first week of the finals after he sang “I Saw Her Standing There.”
2 Mandisa This season five finalist earned the ire of the gay community when The Advocate reported that she listed author and evangelist Beth Moore as one of her personal “Idols.” Moore is the founder of Living Proof Ministries and has written that homosexuality is a “fraudulent attachment” and supports ex-gay ministries. Mandisa was booted in week four after singing Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine.” Some people speculated her early ouster was because of her anti-gay affiliations. When The Advocate gave her a chance to defend herself she told them she’s not anti-gay but would not be comfortable performing at a gay pride event and said this: “Based on what I believe, I’m not an advocate for (being gay), so it’s nothing I would take part in.”
3 Carrie Underwood This season four winner faced immediate backlash from her country music fans after voicing support for gay marriage to a British newspaper. “As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” Underwood told The Independent in 2012. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.” After controversy ensued, she told the Associated Press: “I was asked a difficult question in the last five minutes of an interview and I answered it the best way I knew how…I generally try to stay out of any kind of controversy. The role-model word is really scary to me, because no matter what happens in your life, something you do, wear, say, sing, whatever — somebody somewhere is probably not going to like it too well. I just really try hard to do what I do and try to be nice to people and make great music and if people think they can look up to that, that’s wonderful. If not, that’s OK too.”

4 mario vasquez This early favorite in Season 4 shocked Idol fans when he suddenly dropped out of the competition after making it to the finals. Initially the contestant cited a “personal family thing” as the reason. But his “reasons” continued to evolve over time. In his first interview after quitting, Vasquez went on the air and denied a rumored feud with Idol producers, instead praising them. He later said he wanted more artistic control of his music and felt the show would have restricted him. That same year he signed a record deal with J Records/Arista Records. The Vasquez story, as well as his career, quickly faded away. But the controversy resurfaced two years later with a decidedly gay twist: A lawsuit was filed against Vasquez, FOX Entertainment, and Fremantle Media alleging Vasquez “sexually harassed” a male employee, which included him attempting to masturbate in front of the employee in a bathroom on the set of the show.
5 clay aiken In 2006, the loveable season 2 runner-up was thrust into the middle of a gay sex scandal when a former Green Beret turned porn star, John Paulus, claimed to have unprotected sex with the singer in a North Carolina hotel. Paulus told his story to the National Enquirer and later went on the Howard Stern show to give a graphic account of the encounter. Months later, Paulus apologized for telling his story to the Enquirer. But then the story took another twist in 2007 when Reality Blurred reported on a alleged blog post on Paulus’ website where he recanted his entire affair with Aiken. The posting in question, though, was quickly removed. The Miami Herald contacted Paulus about the recant. He emailed them saying, “It’s unfortunate that in their desperation, Clay Aiken fans would take a sarcastic retort that I made in response to their ludicrous assertion and construe it as a statement of fact. Again, there was never a legitimate recant made by me nor will there be. I stand by the story as reported by the National Enquirer and as told by me on the Howard Stern Show.” It wouldn’t be until 2008 before Aiken (finally) came out of the closet.

Laugh Your Way into the New Year
Comic Dana Goldberg Comes to The Manor By Andrea Dulanto “The more you look alike, the longer you’ve been together.” Comic Dana Goldberg was talking about a long-term lesbian relationship. But any two people in a couple — whether they’re LGBT or straight—can end up morphing into one entity. That’s what makes Goldberg’s comedy connect to even mainstream audiences. Some of her material may be lesbian-centered, yet it’s relatable to everyone.
touch a stage for almost nine years. I was terrified to speak in public. When I was 26, I decided to audition for a show in front of 650 people in a sold out theater. My hands were shaking. I didn’t dare touch the microphone for fear I would turn it into an amplifying vibrator of sorts. I hit my first big joke and heard the most deafening laughter I have ever heard. I was hooked.
talk about this connection between comedy and charitable causes? I started cultivating relationships with non-profits very early in my career. If I have a voice that can reach people, I need to use it for the greater good. The HRC [is] making amazing strides for the LGBT community. It genuinely makes me feel good to know that I’ve been able to contribute to that cause.
Who were some of your earliest comedic influences?
How would you describe South Florida audiences?
Robin Williams, Steven Wright, Billy Crystal … The Comic Relief benefit shows. I watched Saturday Night Live religiously. Gilda Radner was one of the most brilliant comic minds of her time.
How would you describe your style?
HOT! It’s a fun, rowdy crowd. Alison Burgos and Pandora Events have a brilliant production team and they always get the ladies to come out. I’m looking forward to another fun night! To purchase tickets, visit http://www. pandoraevents.com and click on Out For Laughs under Events.

I’ve been described as a thinking woman’s comic by Curve Magazine. I have to agree with that. My routine is edgy but intelligent.
What made you decide to be out as a lesbian comic?
On Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, Pandora Events presents Out for Laughs at The Manor with Dana Goldberg. Since 2003, Goldberg has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad; produced Southwest Funnyfest, an annual comedy show benefit in New Mexico; and performed at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner 2009 (with the likes of President Obama, Lady Gaga and the cast from Glee). In an email interview with South Florida Gay News, Goldberg shared her thoughts on comedic influences, funny women, and how she uses comedy to help others.
When did you know that you wanted to be a comic?
My kindergarten teacher told my mother I was the funniest five-year-old she had ever met…I won my high school talent show with a ten-minute stand up routine… [then] I didn’t
I’m not sure I ever intentionally wanted to bill myself as a “lesbian comedian.” My sexual orientation is a big part of my act, but it doesn’t encompass all of who I am, [yet] being “out” makes me feel more authentic on stage. At this point I believe that if you’re funny, the fact that you’re gay has become very secondary. Modern Family and The New Normal have broken down a lot of barriers.
What are your thoughts on the state of women (particularly LBT women) in comedy right now? Whose work do you admire?
Amy Schumer to Wanda Sykes and everything in between. The stigma that “women aren’t funny” is being broken down. I would really like to see more LBT women performing in front of mainstream crowds. I admire so many of my colleagues’ work: Erin Foley, Jessica Kirson, Dana Eagle, Gina Yashere. You often perform at Human Rights Campaign (HRC) benefits and produce Southwest FunnyFest which raises money for the AIDS Foundation in New Mexico. Can you

Men Are Pigs New play looks at relationships By J.W. Arnold
I
Brothers Grimm, Weikel threads adult themes throughout his story, addressing fear of commitment, communication and the hard work required for relationships to succeed. Unfortunately, Weikel is more than a bit self-indulgent with his wordy script. What could or should have been a short — perhaps accompanied by a second one-act “faerie” tale — gets dragged out into a full 90-minute play. Even the comic relief provided by Kyle and Mama Truth doesn’t provide enough distraction to compensate for some serious edits. And, as expected, Johnny eventually comes to realize his fears are what transformed Dave, but that “a-ha” moment the audience is waiting for is conspicuously missing. Rogow and his actors make the most of the material. The breakout star is Perez in his bovine role. The man deserves hazard pay for crawling around the floor on makeshift hooves and the strain the realistic squealing must have on his voice. But, it’s his expressions that are uncanny, despite the pig snout mask. His eyes are incredibly expressive throughout the entire show, a constant reminder of the man trapped in a pig’s body. Michael McClain’s set makes good use of Empire Stage’s intimate quarters and some tweaks by David Hart on the sound design should accentuate the production for the remainder of the run.

sland City Stage wowed audiences and critics alike with its debut, The Twentieth Century Way, last summer. Now, Artistic Director Andy Rogow’s company is offering Chris Weikel’s Pig Tale at Fort Lauderdale’s Empire Stage as its sophomore production. But, make no mistakes, although it’s dubbed, “An Urban Faerie Story,” there is nothing sophomoric about the play. Men are pigs. Straight men, gay men, bi men, whatever — it’s a fact. Now that the obvious is out of the way, let’s get down to Weikel’s play and the Island City production,
Jobe Anderson and Angel Perez in Pig Tale
which opened last Saturday. The tale begins in Johnny’s East Village apartment after a night partying with f*ckbuddy Dave. The boys are a modern incarnation of the Odd Couple, Johnny (Jobe Anderson) is a neurotic, non-committal queen, while “Porn Star Dave” (Angel Perez), as he is known, is a party boy who just might be looking for love from the wrong guy. Dave would just like to stay the night, but Johnny can’t seem to even make that concession — an admission the two might be in any kind of relationship. An argument of course leads to make-up sex when suddenly Dave is transformed into a pig. This sets into motion a crazy set of events as Johnny struggles to change Dave back into a man. Rounding out the cast are fresh-faced New World grad O’Neil Delapenha as Johnny’s friend Kyle, a likeable stoner who just happened to complete a master’s degree in folk tales (mostly while high), and Larry Buzzeo, juggling several roles, including the sassy trannie “witch” Mama Truth who is believed at first to have hexed Dave. Like the much darker fairy tales of the
