APA Names Gay Man as New Leader The renowned psychological organization has announced its new CEO Fifty years ago Saul Levin wouldn’t have been considered fit to run the American Psychiatric Association. In fact, he would have been considered mentally ill. Levin is openly gay. And he was recently named as the new CEO of the psychology association, as first reported by the Washington Blade. Just 40 years ago, the APA
declared homosexuality was not a mental disorder. Now, Levin becomes the first out gay person to head the organization, which was founded in 1844 and represents over 30,000 psychiatric physicians. Levin will take over the position this fall, when current CEO James Scully Jr. retires. “I have known Saul for over 20 years,” Scully said in a statement.
“He brings extraordinary intelligence, vision and great energy to the challenges ahead for our profession. I look forward to working together with him as we transition to new leadership.” Before his new position, the South Africa native was the first openly gay head of the Washington, D.C.’s Department of Health.
Peace Corps Allow Couples to Serve Together President Kennedy, will open up the application process for gay couples on June 3. “Service in the Peace Corps is a life-defining leadership experience for Americans who want to make a difference around the world,” said Peace Corps Deputy Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet. “I am proud that the agency is taking this important step forward to allow
same-sex domestic partners to serve overseas together.” Gay couples do not have to be married to apply to serve together. However, they will be required to sign an affidavit as evidence of their domestic partnership. Since its establishment in 1961, more than 210,000 Americans in 71 countries have volunteered for the Peace Corps.
Canada Lifts Gay Blood Ban

given the history of the blood system in Canada, we see this as a first and prudent step forward on this policy,” Dr. Dana Devine, vice president of Medical, Scientific and Research Affairs at Canadian Blood Services said in a statement. Canada currently has blood donation laws similar to those in the U.S., which exclude potential
male donors who have had sex with another man since 1977 -- when the AIDS epidemic first emerged. The U.S. federal government enacted the blood ban in 1985, when the risk of AIDS from transfusion was first recognized. Despite public pressure, there have been to amendments to the law.

Boy Scouts Approve Plan to Accept Openly Gay Boys David Crary and Nomaan Merchant, Associated Press
GRAPEVINE, Texas — After lengthy and wrenching debate, local leaders of the Boy Scouts of America have voted to open their ranks to openly gay boys for the first time, but heated reactions from the left and right made clear that the BSA’s controversies are far from over. The Scouts’ longstanding ban on gay adults remains in force, and many liberal Scout leaders – as well as gay-rights groups – plan to continue pressing for an end to that exclusion even though the BSA’s top officials aren’t ready for that step. Meanwhile, many conservatives within the Scouts are distraught at the outcome of the vote and some are threatening to defect. A meeting is planned for next month to discuss the formation of a new organization for boys. The vote was conducted by secret ballot Thursday during the National Council’s annual meeting at conference center not far from Boy Scout headquarters in suburban Dallas. Of the roughly 1,400 voting members of the council who cast ballots, 61 percent supported the proposal drafted by the governing Executive
$150
Committee. The policy change takes effect Jan. 1. “This has been a challenging chapter in our history,” the BSA chief executive, Wayne Brock, said after the vote. “While people have differing opinions on this policy, kids are better off when they’re in Scouting.” However, the outcome will not end the membership policy debate, as was evident in the reactions of leaders of some of the conservative religious denominations that sponsor Scout units. “We are deeply saddened,” said Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s executive committee. “Homosexual behavior is incompatible with the principles enshrined in the Scout oath and Scout law.” The Assemblies of God said the policy change “will lead to a mass exodus from the Boy Scout program.” It also warned that the change would make the BSA vulnerable to lawsuits seeking to end the ban on gay adults. John Stembeger, a conservative activist and former Scout from Florida, founded a group called OnMyHonor.net to oppose the policy change. He assailed the BSA

executive committee for its role in gaining a “Yes” vote. “What kind of a message are we sending to young people about being brave when its top adult leaders don’t even have the courage to stand up to the pressure of a militant lobby when the bullies in Washington D.C., Hollywood or even some of their own renegade councils start pressuring and harassing them?” he asked. He said OnMyHonor.Net and other likeminded organizations and individuals would meet in Louisville, Ky., next month to discuss the creation of “a new character development organization for boys.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry also expressed dismay.
“While I will always cherish my time as a Scout and the life lessons I learned, I am greatly disappointed with this decision,” he said. The result was welcomed by many liberal members of the Scouting community and by gay-rights activists, though most of the praise was coupled with calls for ending the ban on gay adults. “I’m so proud of how far we’ve come, but until there’s a place for everyone in Scouting, my work will continue,” said Jennifer Tyrrell, whose ouster as a Cub Scout den leader in Ohio because she is lesbian launched a national protest movement. +Bone Thugs Claim Hip-Hop Ignores Eazy-E Because of AIDS Members of the 90s hip-hop group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony told TMZ that they believe their mentor Eazy-E’s accomplishments have been forgotten because he died of AIDS. Called the “Godfather of Gangster Rap,” Eazy-E died in March of 1995 from AIDSrelated complications.
“Some people seem like they are afraid to commemorate him due to how he died,” Bizzy Bone told TMZ. “But Bone never once has – nor will stop – commemorating him.” Billed as a “gay disease,” Bone Thugs members felt Eazy-E is falling victim to that
stigma and is “being unfairly painted with that brush.” Krayzie Bone told TMZ he thinks some people in the hip-hop community believe an AIDS death is an inferior or lessmanly way to die than a shooting death – like Biggie Smalls and Tupac. “They died being known as gangsta

Daubenmire then goes on to say it’s obvious the first black President is gay because of the way he reacts to gay issues. “President Obama, his face seems to really light up when he begins to talk about the gay agenda,” he said. “[Obama] was so proud when that Jason Collins came out of the closet.” Not only does Daubenmire want the President to admit he’s gay, he implores the Commander-in-Chief to admit he’s a socialist despite the stock market being at its highest level in history.
Just one week after the Village Voice’s Editor-in-Chief Will Bourne and Deputy Editor Jessica Lustig’s swift resignations after refusing to lay-off staff, Christine Brennan, executive editor of the Village Voice Media Group, has fired veteran writers Michael Musto, Robert Sietsema and Michael Feingold, according to Gawker. Musto told Gawker that people have come out to offer him their love and opportunities. “I’ll update you on all my new beginnings,” Musto said. “My brand will be feistier than ever.” Gawker was also told that the paper’s remaining staff is “devastated” and in “uproar.” According to a statement from Village Voice Media, the restructuring will allow the Voice to continue offering “superior content and products to its New York audience – specifically film, music, restaurant, and breaking news easily accessible across both print and digital platforms – while also ensuring the sustainability of the publication.” In other news: The Village Voice is now hiring.

Winger Wants Obama +Right to Come Out
A Christian commentator wants President Obama to be the first openly gay president in history, according to the right-wing watchdog website, Right Wing Watch. In a video on the News with Views YouTube page, “Coach” David Daubenmire pleads Obama to come out of the closet and admit he’s gay, or at least bisexual. “I think it’s time for President Obama to come out of the closet,” Daubenmire said. “How about he come out and admit he’s the first openly gay president or, better yet, openly bisexual president.”

The famed Note Dame cathedral in Paris was evacuated on May 21 after Catholic activist Dominique Venner committed suicide at the altar in an apparent protest of the county’s new marriage equality law, according to the Daily Mail. The incident took place around 4 p.m. Paris time when the cathedral was full of visitors. One witness told the Mail panic set in before first responders arrive to clear the church out. “There was screaming and lot so shouting following a loud bang,” the witness said. “People were naturally very scared and began to run out in panic. Police and other emergency workers including firemen got here very quickly, and then the whole cathedral was evacuated.” According to blogger John Becker, Venner, 78, published a post on his blog where he condemned marriage equality and possibly hinted at his actions today. “[Preventing marriage equality] certainly will require new, spectacular, and symbolic actions to wake up the sleep walkers, shake the anaesthetized consciousness, and awaken the memory of our origins,” Venner wrote. “We are entering a time when words must be authenticated by acts.”

Should you be worried about meningitis? South Florida groups not losing sleep over NYC, Cali killer bacteria Christiana Lilly
christiana.lilly@gmail.com
While South Florida officials are monitoring the bacterial meningitis outbreak in New York, little is being done to combat it outside of educating the public and healthcare professionals. Bacterial meningitis is spread through saliva, meaning one could contract it simply from sharing drinks or cigarettes. The disease causes inflammation of the spinal cord and brain, leading to severe headache, fever, stiff neck and more severe neurological symptoms. In some people, the disease takes effect quickly. Some men in New York were found dead in their beds, probably thinking they just had a bad cold. Dr. Paula Thaqi, director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, gave SFGN a list of actions taken by the department. This includes ongoing communication with New York City officials,

distributing posters and palm cards, with information on the disease to businesses, notifying area hospitals and emergency rooms, and continuing to monitor the meningitis database. However, no one is offering free meningitis vaccines, something many would like to see. Only children up to 18 can receive the vaccine for free. Different pharmacies and health groups offer the vaccine, which can cost up to $150. In New York City, 22 men have been infected with meningitis since 2010 and seven have died, according to a release from the New York City Department of Health. All men who have sex with men were encouraged to get the meningitis vaccine as a precaution, and the recommendation was expanded to the entire state of New York in late March.

In May, the Sun Sentinel reported that South Florida was a region alerted to the expansion of recommendations. However, Jeffrey Hammond, a spokesman with the New York State Department of Health, told SFGN he was not aware of any special alert, just a press release put on the site. Many places are offering free vaccines, including a doctor in New York who brings the vaccine with him to a popular sex club there to spread the word. From choir boys to museum walls, Stonewall National Museum & Archives’ new executive director is expecting a change of pace. Stonewall — home to the largest collection of LGBT historical artifacts — has been leaderless since Nov. 2012, when the former executive director left. After two months of searching, Stonewall has selected David Jobin as the new executive director to begin on June 1. According to Gregory Stephens, board member and chair of the 7-member executive director search committee, over 140 applicants applied for the position. “We looked at the skills we needed to select a new director and targeted those applicants,” he said. Jobin previously managed the Gay Men’s Choir of Washington D.C. after 20 years of background in theater management. My HIV Diary Not so fast
Here’s to the next chapter... Photo courtesy of skrewtape
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 38
(May 17 to May 23) “Not so fast!” That’s exactly what I felt I was being told by the world. I’m in a bit of a pickle this week. I’m supposed to be in Atlanta but ran into some trouble with the car rental. I’ve never had or needed a credit card. You can’t get a car without one so instead of being in Atlanta already I get to spend a few more days in Florida. On top of that, I’m supposed to be back in Florida on June 8 for a medicine study appointment, but I have no idea how I’m going to make it back. It’s cost me a lot of

money to break a lease here and move to a new city. My doctor was trying to see if the study could pay for a flight or even a bus but no word on that yet. Seems like one of the fears I had of going off the meds might be coming true. I understood that this move would come with difficulties, but I still didn’t want to face them. I have a doctor already set up in Atlanta, but I’ll most likely only be able to get a 60 to 90 supply of new drugs if I can’t make the study appointment. After that, it’s mostly like a waiting game for me to see if I’ll be able to receive medication. I have the option to stop taking medication and see how my body reacts to that. I have a friend who is eight years removed from medication and is still undetectable and has a very good CD4 count. Maybe the same could happen to me? Maybe taking these meds was the push my body needed to get back on track and fight this virus on its own. These next months are going to prove to be crucial in my life and well being. I’ve rolled with the punches on the past, so let’s see what I can pull off this time.

A Long Road to Sanctuary
After five years of struggling, one couple manages to turn an abandoned building into a promising recovery center for the LGBT community Story & photos by Lulu Ramadan aramadan723@gmail.com
They’re sitting next to each other in a crack house, holding hands. Their matching engagement rings glisten — the same engagement rings they pawned off five years ago when they decided to buy that crack house. Over the years, Jared Cashner and James Sanzeri have sold their car, emptied out their retirement funds, and pawned their engagement rings all to keep and maintain a property at the corner of North Andrews Avenue and NW 25 Street. They called it the Sanctuary House. Their goal in opening the Sanctuary House of South Florida was to provide a safe and stable environment for men and women in the LGBT community struggling with drug or alcohol abuse. The Sanctuary House takes in people who want to recover from drug and alcohol abuse and offers them recovery meetings, therapy sessions, organized doctor visits, and a place to call home. Cashner walks a brick path through a garden leading towards the front of the Sanctuary House. A large tree with branches stretching over the walkway drops bright, pink flowers into a little pond. There are gardens everywhere, practically around every corner. Cashner loves the garden setting. They make the Sanctuary House seem tranquil. He takes a seat on the porch swing on top

of the marble floors and rocks back and forth. It’s hard to believe that a little less than five years ago, this was not at all how his sanctuary looked. With cracked floors, broken down walls, and no doors, this abandoned building became a ground for squatters and drug dealers. “It was a nightmare when we first bought it,” Cashner said. Cashner and Sanzeri purchased the abandoned property in December 2008 and turned it into a promising recovery center. It began with just three clients. It has since grown to a volunteer staff of 13 and up to 41 clients at a time. The Sanctuary House managed to raise $250,000 in 2012. “We’ve come a long way since the broken down property we first bought,” Cashner said. Wayne Campanele takes a seat next to Cashner on the porch swing. Campanele has been a client at the Sanctuary House since March 2012. He has been in and out of rehab centers since he was 13 years old. This is the first time he feels at home. “And I didn’t even mean to come here,” he said. Campanele’s drug abuse problems got him into trouble. A judge told him that he could either go to jail or enter into a program. Cashner stood up in the courtroom and raised his hand, “I’ll take him,” he said. “I couldn’t let him go to jail,” Cashner soflagaynews //

reminisces. “I know how hard it is, so I had to be the parent with the steel-toed boots.” The minimum stay for a client at the Sanctuary House is four months, but most clients stay an average of a year, according to Cashner. “This is the best I’ve ever been in,” Campanele said. Cashner leans forward and pats Campanele on the shoulder. “I’m signing Wayne here up for classes tomorrow morning,” Cashner said with a wide smile. Campanele is planning to attend beauty school. “I feel motivated,” Campanele said. “Like I have a purpose.” Cashner hopes that every client leaves the Sanctuary House with a job or ready to start school. The most important thing is that they have something waiting for them when they leave. “If you want to take classes, I will help you,” Cashner said. “Don’t worry about money. I will find a way. You believe that.” Cashner stands up and begins walking a brick path around the Sanctuary House, through a fence and more gardens. He shows off the poolside area, situated perfectly under the shade of multiple palm trees and fully furnished. That’s not how it looked five years ago. In December of 2008, the cracked concrete of a hollowed out pool was buried in the shadows of a large, yellow bulldozer.
The Sanctuary House Thrift Shop
No trees. No furniture. The city was planning on knocking down what is now Cashner’s sanctuary. “It was the most unattractive building in the neighborhood,” Cashner described it. And he wanted it. To Cashner, it wasn’t just a crack house; it was a project. It was taking this decrepit, old house, a breeding ground for bad habits, and turning it into a safe place — into a home. The couple bought their sanctuary before it was destroyed, but it was hardly habitable. “The place was so bad when we first got it that it took me and James two months with a metal detector to find all the needles buried in the rubble,” Cashner said. They did the repairs themselves and still do to this day along with managing the business end of the Sanctuary House. “If there’s a leak in the house, it comes down to me and a plumber’s wrench,” Cashner said. It took years to clean every apartment in the house and make all of the repairs. There are still a few repairs, as Cashner points out. A few doors jam and the roof needs work done — everything seems minor in comparison to the first repairs. “Once we got the first big hurdles out the way, it was easy,” Sanzeri said. “We still keep busy, but we’re dedicated and we love it.” Cashner pointed out a building across the road while speaking with SFGN. A few weeks ago, he recognized a drug dealer in
the nearby building. As a 49-year-old retired court reporter, Cashner works closely with local police and local courts. He had the man removed from the building by police. “I had him out of there so quick,” Cashner chuckled. “See this,” he said pointing at a bench in the gardens just behind the main building of the property. It was a gray marble bench engraved “Joseph ‘Buddy’ Sanzeri,” in memory of Sanzeri’s older brother who died at the age of 15 from drug abuse. “I’ll be damned if I ever let a drug dealer anywhere near this property,” Cashner said. Sanzeri struggled from drug abuse himself. The 24-year -old has been in recovery for more than five years. “It’s more than personal to me,” Sanzeri said. “My brother died from drugs. There aren’t many places for these people to go.” Now he pours all of his time and effort into giving others the chance that his brother never got. If it’s up to him, he’ll be doing this “forever.” Cashner and his late husband of 18 years adopted two sons, one of whom was born to a mother with severe drug and alcohol abuse problems. “I knew how he was born. I knew he had drugs and alcohol in his system from birth,” Cashner said. “But he was mine the minute they put him in my arms and I knew that, too.” Both partners have reason to feel close to this cause — close enough that they’ve only taken a total of nine days off in the last five years, they said. “Someone said to me once ‘you’re not an alcoholic, you’re a workaholic,’” Cashner said laughing. There are three buildings. The biggest is the main building where the gay men in recovery stay. The couple opened two more for lesbian women, and transgender clients. He opens the door to one room in the main building. It looked just like the others, furnished with a pull-out couch, small coffee table, and TV. But this room was different. It was Cashner and Sanzeri’s home when they opened the Sanctuary House. They spent all of their money and time on the Sanctuary House and ended up living in it with the clients for almost a year. The couple didn’t intend to open the Sanctuary House, it was a “happy accident,” as Cashner calls it. One rainy night in November 2008, the couple had a friend who struggled with substance abuse come to them with nowhere to go. They rented an apartment for him and helped him get back on his feet. The friend spoke at a recovery meeting and told others Cashner and Sanzeri brought him. “It had a snowball effect,” Sanzeri said. “We weren’t just getting one or two calls about clients. It was more.” Before they knew it, the Sanctuary House that could hold only three clients grew to house up to 41 clients. “We’re planning on expanding the back

end of the property to make room for more bed space,” Cashner said. With Cashner’s close relationships to local judges and the police department, he gets calls constantly asking if they have room for just one more client. The Sanctuary House grew rapidly, and before Cashner could see it coming, so did the bills. The couple sold what they could to keep the Sanctuary afloat, including their engagement rings, before their luck began to turn around. They began receiving private donations from community members that wanted to support the cause. In September 2012, the couple opened a thrift shop just two blocks away from the Sanctuary House. All of the proceeds from the thrift store go towards funding for the Sanctuary House. According to Cashner, the thrift store makes about $8,000 a month. With all of the money coming in from donations and the thrift store, Cashner and Sanzeri are able to offer bed space at the Sanctuary House to clients for $17.36 per day. More people also volunteered their time to the cause as it grew. The Sanctuary built a staff of 13 unpaid volunteers. People like Eliana Dole volunteered their time. Dole has been volunteering with the Sanctuary for over three weeks now, as their newest volunteer. She wandered into the Sanctuary House Thrift Store one day and immediately fell in love with the cause. “When they told me about what they were doing, I thought it was incredible,” Dole said. Dole helps run the thrift store with Sanzeri. “They just want to help others and it’s amazing,” Dole said. “If I can help someone to not hurt anymore, then I will.” The Sanctuary House was recently recognized as a public charity in late April. The couple applied two years ago in order to work with other nonprofits and become eligible to apply for grants. “Now, we’re in talks about upcoming grants,” Cashner said. He’s more hopeful now than ever. Cashner doubles back to the front of the Sanctuary House. He fiddles with the engagement ring on his left hand, twisting around his ring finger. The couple bought the pawned rings back two weeks ago. They’re getting married at the end of June in Long Island. “We’re finally going to take a vacation,” Cashner said laughing. He reminisces on the changes endured since they first pawned the rings off. “There were no toilets in the space,” Cashner laughed. “The first year was spent making it habitable. The second was spent making it beautiful. Now, it truly is a sanctuary.” For more information about the Sanctuary House of S. Florida, visit sanctuaryhouse.info. How a South Florida gay motorcycle club made its own Story and photos by Christiana Lilly christiana.lilly@gmail.com
“Why does your bike have glitter all over it?” Carlos asked, looking over at his friend’s red candy-painted Harley. “I had it in drag the other night and can’t get it off,” Dennis replied, laughing. With the blue skies above and the waves crashing on the sand, it’s another Sunday for the Stonewall Knights, a gay motorcycle group, as they ride down A1A. The Stonewall Knights started in 2002 in

Also, every year, about a dozen members donate their time to be motorcycle escorts for Smart Ride Florida, a two-day bicycle ride from Miami to Key West to raise money for HIV/AIDS. “To a lot of us, this is therapy,” Carlos Hazday said.

as hosting open houses, explained Mike Gluckman, one of the original members of the Stonewall Knights. “The Confederation of Clubs would most likely not sanction us as a gay riders club.” And he’s probably right. The chances of a gay group being sanctioned is “somewhere between none and no way. To even approach them would not be the best idea,” a motorcycle culture expert from Motorcycle Club Riding Club Education told SFGN. “The culture is such that it’s a tribal macho man’s man world and women are second to the club and the club members. Clubs would not condone the gay lifestyle at all. Not saying it’s right or wrong, that’s just the way it is.” With that, the Stonewall Knights decided that a casual structure was a better fit, operating as a social group. No dues, no officers, no official meetings, no probation period. To get a patch, an initiation in motorcycle clubs, all the group asks is active participation. Traveling to Thailand Sophie Needelman
There are few things as exciting as getting to take a top of the line, worldclass international trip to one of the most incredible tourist destinations in the world. GayTravel.com’s Gay Travel Guru Bryan Kosarek experienced the thrills of travel recently on his incredible trip to Thailand. Throughout his journey to Bangkok, Chiangmai, and Phuket, the Gay Travel Guru soaked up all Thailand has to offer while scoping out the gay scenes in around these areas for gay travelers everywhere. After traveling for 27 hours, Bryan arrived in Bangkok and woke up a few hours later to a gorgeous view of downtown- not to mention an open mind and no expectations so as to best experience this beautiful city! His daytime destinations kicked off with the Chattachuk Market which is only held on weekends and has over 10,000 vendors selling everything from artwork to puppies. Even the best travelers get lost though: Bryan spent a good five hours accidentally exploring
this rich hotspot in the city which is not a bad place to get stuck for an afternoon. After frolicking with Bangkok’s people, Bryan got a taste of this city’s notorious architecture and history at the local temple and grand palace. A unique aspect of this temple- the Temple of the Tigers- is the incredible opportunity to play with, feed, and bathe tigers ranging from cubs to three years old! After offering the local monks food and sharing breakfast with them, Bryan indulged his inner animal by soaking up this rare chance to interact with tigers up close and personal. Though this experience is truly hard to top, the rest of Bryan’s travels around Bangkok included a boat ride on a long tail boat through the canals of Bangkok to tour the local architecture and floating markets as well as an incredible spa day at the spa recently ranked best spa in all of Asia! It would be near criminal to visit Bangkok without hitting up the amazing nightlife there- and the Gay Travel Guru definitely

did not disappoint! His Bangkok nightlife experience kicked off with a party at Club Ono which is short for “One Night Only”, housed in Bangkok’s gaybourhood Snow Cowboy. Bryan also went to the very top of Vertigo Bar which is one of the highest points in Bangkok overlooking the entire city. Finally, the Guru rounded off his Bangkok nightlife extravaganza with the city’s notorious Ping Pong shows, Lady Boy shows, and dancing the nights away in the gay bars around town. After wrapping up his time in Bangkok, Bryan traveled to his next destination Chiangmai which is in northern Thailand. Chiangmai is extremely laid back compared to Bangkok, with less traffic and a very relaxed atmosphere. There, he celebrated Thai New Year at the largest public water fight- and flirt fest- in the world! In addition to this massive celebration for the LGBT community and straight community alike, Bryan got to visit the Chiangmai elephants. Not only did Bryan’s new elephant friends take him for a ride through the jungle, but they ate and painted pictures together too! The Gay Travel Guru’s next stop on his Thailand tour was Phuket, a little island in the south of Thailand. There, he stayed in a hotel on a glorious hill with cabanas home to their own pools and an intricate network of stairs

wrapping through the trees and jungle. He even got his spectatorship on sitting ringside at a Thai boxing match. The main differences between the three Thai destinations Bryan visited is the size and type of lifestyles practiced in each one. Bangkok, with 10 million people, has a vibrant gay scene with endless bars and clubs. In Phuket there is not much of a gay scene aside from other gay people traveling. According to Bryan, Chianmai was the perfect balance with 2 million people and a handful of gay bars where being gay is accepted but not thrown in your face. In terms of LGBT travel safety, Bryan reports back that he always felt safe in and around the Thai destinations he visited. He believes that the overall Thai culture is accepting of homosexuality even if it is not openly spoken about. To get around in general, our Guru definitely relied on a wide network of public transportation which he assures is accessible and affordable. There was also a wide acceptance of a variety of languages all of which were very easily accommodated by the Thai people and other travelers alike. While Bryan didn’t end up eating any crazy and exotic foods during his travels, he did indulge in the best of authentic Thai food which put a glorious finishing touch to his first official international Gay Travel Guru trip to Thailand!

Behind the Pride
Meet the eleven people that make reaching the community through the Pride Center possible Lulu Ramadan
aramadan723@gmail.com
In its 20th anniversary, the Pride Center at Equality Park of South Florida celebrates two decades of LGBT community outreach. Meanwhile, eleven people dedicate their time and energy to keeping the Pride Center alive and thriving. From arts and culture to health education, the Pride Center offers over 60 regular programs a month to care for the needs of the LGBT community. With a campus of over 30,000 square feet located in Wilton Manors, the Pride Center has provided a
safe-haven for LGBT youth, adults, and seniors. According to its website, over 17,000 people attend activities at the Pride Center each year. But a non-profit organization of this magnitude doesn’t just run itself. In the background, the Pride Center’s board of directors — a eleven-person panel that governs and raises funds for the nonprofit organization — has been putting their full effort into making sure keeping the center open for the community is possible.
“Their responsibility is to make sure that strategically we’re moving in the direction we should be to support the LGBT community,” Executive Director of the Pride Center Robert Boo said. According to Boo, the board plays a vital role in supporting the Pride Center financially. Each board member is expected reach out to local companies and get these companies to financially support the center. And they don’t stop there. “Based on their skill set and passion, they

Ilene Berliner Berliner has sat on the board for almost six years now. She recently retired earlier this year from her job as an executive account manager for Creative Ad Images, an advertising agency in Fort Lauderdale. After retiring, she assumed the position of chair of the board of directors because she wanted to put more time and energy into her true passion — the Pride Center. “I made a lot of friends when I got involved with the Pride Center,” Berliner said. “That also propelled me to get involved. You meet
so many great people.” Berliner was involved in the board as the Pride Center grew and become more prominent in the community. “I saw how important our center was to the community,” Berliner said. “We offer services that top any other organization in the area.” One of her biggest accomplishments is expanding on the programs for women in the LBT community. “We didn’t have women’s programs

Whether it’s individual programs at the center or a specific fundraiser, each board member has a role and a passion that keeps them committed to their position. “It’s a big commitment of time and a commitment of their finances,” Boo said. “For someone willing to donate their time, money, and talent to this cause, it says a lot about these wonderful individuals. They’re just so willing to give and give.”
before,” Berliner said. “Now, we have programs for women’s health, women’s groups, and physicians for women.” Berliner hopes to use her seat as chair of the board to continue fundraising to keep the Pride Center supported financially and let more people in the community know about what the Pride Center can offer. “I just want people to know [the Pride Center] is open,” Berliner said. “I would be more than happy to give a personal tour to any person who hasn’t seen it.”
Walker has been on the Board of Directors for over a year now. When he and his partner, Lee, moved down to South Florida in 2009, he immediately became involved in the community. He held, and still holds, a position on the board of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation — an organization that works with news and media to advocate for the acceptance and understanding of LGBT rights.

After a year in South Florida, Walker discovered the Pride Center and decided to become involved. “When I first moved down here, I hardly knew anyone,” Walker said. “I met a lot of great people after I moved down to South Florida through the Pride Center.” “One of the things I love about the center is whether you’re a volunteer, or want to be HIV tested, or a member of the garden club, the Pride Center provides a place for soflagaynews //
everybody,” Walker said. Walker and his partner helped organize and host the most successful annual fundraiser the center has had. In 2012, they opened up their home to over 300 guests for the first annual “Evening in Paradise” fundraiser with a Garden of Eden theme. The fundraiser helped raise over $50,000 in 2012 and over $60,000 in 2013. “I’m very proud that this has become an ongoing fundraiser,” Walker said.

Engel has been on the board of directors for over eight months now. Friends that participate in the fundraisers and events introduced him to the Pride Center. “I felt like it was a great place to give back to the community,” Engel said. “Something happens when you see what a great organization it is and what a great group of people are involved: you really want to be

He first became involved in the Pride Center after seeing the work they do and how involved they are with the community. “It’s my time to give back to the community,” Adcock said. “As I started getting older, I saw this need to give back to the next generation. I saw this safe place for all of the young people and I never had that during my time.” He aims to stay involved in the community in his spare time.

Engel uses his knowledge of finances as treasurer of the board to assist in keeping the Pride Center financially sound. “I consider myself as a supportive role to make sure the center can function from a financial standpoint,” Walker said. “I make
sure they have the finances to achieve their overall goals and reach out to the community.” Engel hopes to use his position to help the center continue to grow. “I hope to see more outreach and more people participating,” Engel said. “I want to be around to help them continue to grow these programs and the campus and do more for the community.”
Mitchell Bloom Bloom has been with the board for over a year and a half. Bloom has been a manager in Wells Fargo for eight years now and a branch manager of the Wells Fargo in Wilton Manors for two years. Bloom initially became involved in the Pride Center after recognizing its importance in the community. “The center has always been the best place for resources, counseling and moral support for people who don’t know where to turn,” Bloom said.
“Years ago, many of my friends found out they were HIV-positive,” Bloom says. “Knowing [the Pride Center] plays a critical role in helping them be in a better place makes me feel really good.” One of Bloom’s goals includes volunteering as a rider in the Smart Ride — a program that raises money for HIV/AIDS awareness through an event where volunteers bike from Miami to Key West. The Pride Center is one of six beneficiaries of the fundraiser. “You just ride on a bicycle all the way to

With a profession as a realtor, Adcock has gained experience in the remodeling and renovation of over 20 residences in Ft. Lauderdale. He uses his expertise to reach big goals he has for the Pride Center. “We’ve started the beautification of the front of the center,” Adcock said. “We have a great building there, but you don’t know the
building is there because you can’t see it.” Adcock’s goal is to have the front of the center painted and lighting installed to improve the look of the building. “As a realtor, it’s all about first impressions,” he said. Overall, he’s most proud of his work with the center because of the services provided to the community members. “It’s interesting because everyone always has a big smile on their face because they finally have a safe place to go,” Adcock said.

I want to get more young people aware and get them involved.”

“We host monthly luncheons for the center,” Budwig said. “The more people that help out, the merrier we are.” Budwig also became interested in being involved in the Pride Center to make LGBT youth more comfortable with whom they are and provide them with a safe place in the community. “I know when I came out it was very difficult,” he said. “I’m just trying to make it easier for kids today.”
Leslie Tipton Tipton recently rejoined the board in Fall 2012 after holding a position on the board for over three years and temporarily leaving for two. Tipton is currently a pastor at the Church of the Holy Spirit Song, which holds its services on the Pride Center campus in Wilton Manors. She holds services every Wednesday and Sunday morning and the church has grown to over 150 members since its establishment in 1999.
The church is open to everyone, and anyone in the LGBT community is encouraged to participate. “I feel that it’s vitally important for our community members who have been shunned for so long to feel welcome,” Tipton said. “We strive to make it a welcoming place for every single person on that campus.” Tipton hopes that people in the community think of the Pride Center as a place to feel safe and a place of understanding.

Pride Center and ensuring the organization is financially sound and maintains its important role in the community. “Growing up, I never had a place like that to go to,” Hartley said. “So it means a lot to me that we have it right here in the community.” A goal of Hartley’s is to encourage women to participate more often in the pride center, whether it’s volunteering or participating in programs.
“I want to get more women involved,” Hartley said. “That’s a passion of mine. I really want to try and get more women in programs at the Pride Center.” Seeing the people that use the programs at the center and find a safe place in the Pride Center makes it all worthwhile for Hartley. “It’s a lot of work and a lot of hours, but it’s for the community,” Hartley said. “Really, that’s what it’s all about.”
“It’s important for people in our community to know that it’s okay to be the way they are,” Tipton said. “They were made that way.” Tipton’s role as a pastor encourages her to be active in the community, specifically the Pride Center through her role on the board. “It feels great being a part of the center,” Tipton said. “It’s not just what we do for them; it’s what they do for the community.”

“There were a lot of people who needed help,” Kling said. “I thought that I would like to give back.” Now as a board member, Kling appreciates the different growing roles the Pride Center plays in the community. “We’re trying to make the Pride Center a place where people can come and just feel like everyone else,” Kling said. “It’s a place where people care about your well-being.”
Safaty has been on the board of the Pride Center for about a year, but joined as a founder in 2008. Originally from New York, Safaty moved to South Florida in 2006 and opened his own travel agency, Freedom Travel, in Wilton Manors. Safaty was involved in the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth network — an advocacy and support organization for LGBT youth in the area. Safaty became involved in the Pride Center after moving to South Florida to continue his work with the community.
“I was in business for 18 years,” Safaty said. “I feel like I’ve been successful and I want to give some of that back to the community.” “I’ve always wanted to help support organizations and programs for the LGBT community,” Safaty said. Safaty was very active in planning the Pride Center’s first cruise as a fundraiser in February 2012 and 2013. Over 120 community members active in the Pride Center and several donors attended the cruise and the event raised over $5,000 for
the Pride Center this year. “It was a very successful program and not just as a fundraiser,” Safaty said. “It also gave people the opportunity to be social and learn more about the Pride Center.” Safaty enjoys being part of the Pride Center community and hopes to see it grow. “We have all of these different people and different programs,” Safaty said. “Everyone is touched in different ways and it’s a great feeling to be a part of something good.”

In the Key of Pride Celebrate LGBT History at Key West Pride 2013 Andrea Dulanto
adulanto03@gmail.com
In New York, it was the 1969 Stonewall Riots that eventually initiated the tradition of gay marches in the U.S; and San Francisco is known for The Castro and Harvey Milk’s political work. But travelers should not overlook Key West Pride, which takes place from June 5 to June 9 —particularly since the city of Key West has made its own contributions to LGBT history. Key West has been home to lesbian and gay writers such as the Pulitzer Prize winning poet Elizabeth Bishop and playwright Tennessee Williams. It was the first U.S. city
to have an openly gay mayor. It was even the first travel locale to reach out to the gay community. The Key West Business Guild (KWBG) organizes Key West Pride, and was started as a non-profit in 1978 to encourage LGBT travelers to visit the island. “Key West has always been an accepting island,” said Pete Arnow, Community Liaison of KWBG. Arnow also noted that same-sex couples have “always been able to hold hands here.” Furthermore, he spoke about how the LGBT community and straight community have created a sense of

togetherness: “The motto [of Key West] is One Human Family. And it truly is.” This year, Key West Pride 2013 stays true to the motto, and celebrates another moment in LGBT history: The 10th Anniversary of the “Sea to Sea Rainbow Flag.” In 2003, Gilbert Baker, the designer of the Rainbow Flag, created the “World’s Longest Gay Pride Flag” for Key West Pride. When it was finally displayed, the flag covered the distance of Duval Street, which is located between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Baker has been named the Parade Grand Marshall for Key West Pride 2013. Other featured events for the 10th Anniversary of the “Sea to Sea Rainbow Flag” include a meet and greet with Baker at La Te Da Hotel, and a documentary film screening about the flag, “Key West, City of Colors.” Although there is a cash bar at La Te Da, both events are free. In fact, Key West Pride has a number of free events. The 6th Annual Key West Pride Film Fest presents two free films: I Am Divine, a documentary about the star of John Waters’ Pink Flamingoes and Hairspray; and deepsouth, a documentary on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Southern United States. The Barefoot Wine Pride Beach Clean-Up is a free event that helps the environment. Volunteers who are of drinking age will be provided with wine and appetizers afterwards. Several venues offer events without a cover charge. Whether it’s a women’s pool party at Lighthouse Court, 70s/80s dance music at Pearl’s and 801 Bourbon Bar, or happy hour at Alexander’s Traffic Light Party — all have no cover. Families with children can enjoy the Conch Cruisers “Show Your Pride” Bike Ride,

the Street Fair, and the Parade. Other events vary in price from $10 to $50. Arnow recommends that visitors “get out on our waters.” Sailing, snorkeling and other water escapades can be found with Venus Charters, Fury’s Key West Pride Ultimate Adventure, as well as other companies on the Key West Pride website. In the evenings, there are cabaret shows, or comedy and music like The Kinsey Sicks, known as “America’s Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet.” Key West is “only the size of Central Park in New York,” said Arnow. “But a lot can happen here…we invite everyone to come to Key West Pride.”

The opportunity to enjoy live theater outdoors is rare, but you’ll find it at Andrews Living Arts Studio, 23 NW 5th St. Artistic Director Robert Nation presents his latest production in the studio’s outdoor theater, Jonathan Larsen’s Rent, his rock musical interpretation of the classic operatic tragedy, La boheme. The street noise, sirens and hovering helicopters effectively transform Fort Lauderdale’s FAT Village arts district into the lower East Village of the early 1990s depicted in the story about HIV/AIDS and the struggles of young artists trying to get ahead. See it Thursdays through Sundays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $29.95 at AndrewsLivingArts.org.
Theater We’ve all heard that joke: You never hear about a “bisexual” guy sneaking out on his boyfriend to be with a woman. Well, that’s exactly the case in Mike Bartlett’s gripping play, Cock, playing through June 16 at GableStage in Coral Gables. When the ostensibly gay John breaks up with his older, controlling boyfriend, he finds his own sexual orientation in question when he meets an intriguing young woman. Ryan Didato gives an amazing performance as John finds himself torn between two lovers in a brilliant production directed by multiple-CarbonellAward-winner Joseph Adler. Tickets are $47.50 to $50 at GableStage.org. Julie Davis, Ryan Didato, Nicholas Richberg and Peter Galman star in Mike Bartlett’s Cock, playing through June 16 at GableStage. It’s the Chorus of the Chorus Concert celebrates music of gay chorus movement J.W. Arnold
jw@prdconline.com
The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus will perform music made popular by gay and lesbian choruses across the country at a special concert at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. Photo courtesy of Steven Shires
Since the earliest days of the gay rights movement in the late ‘60s and ‘70s, music has played just as important role as Pride parades and protests. And, as the AIDS epidemic hit the community in the ‘80s, the sounds of gay and lesbian choruses soothed mourners and raised awareness. The hundreds of choruses that voiced the aspirations and angst of the LGBT community have sung in harmony for 30 years, led by the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, itself marking 27 years of music–making in South Florida, will celebrate GALA’s anniversary with a special concert June 7 and 8 at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale auditorium. Founder and returning Artistic Director Dr. Gary Keating will conduct the 22-voice ensemble in a musical journey through history, highlighting many of the musical works commissioned and made famous by the member choruses of GALA. The concert will include songs with political themes, including “Marry Us,” made popular by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus; classical choral composer Randall Thompson’s 1943 “Testament of Freedom,” performed by many GALA choruses; and “All Rights Reserved,” composed after the 1992 passage of the infamous anti-gay Amendment 2 in Colorado. “When I started the chorus in 1986, it was the first major ‘out’ organization in Florida since Anita Bryant,” recalled Keating, noting the successful efforts of the former beauty queen to thwart gay rights in the 1970s. “We
still have many fights to fight, but many have already been fought and won.” Today, 13 states and the District of Columbia have legalized samesex marriage and Colorado recently recognized domestic partnerships, yet, many states — including Florida — still have discriminatory laws on the books and attention is focused on the Supreme Court, awaiting a key decision on marriage equality that could have national implications. The AIDS epidemic has also played key role in the growth of the GALA movement. Since the first reported deaths, many member choruses have sung at the memorial services of departed members. The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus recently sent out a press release announcing the ensemble’s 2000th performance at a funeral. “I’ve heard of people who were sick, moved to San Francisco and joined their chorus, only for the reason the chorus would be singing at their funerals one day,” Keating said, adding that in the first three years since its founding, his South Florida chorus sang at 41 services. The gay chorus movement has also served other important functions for its musicians: One of Keating’s singers used a performance as an opportunity to come out to his parents. The vocalist sent tickets to his parents and after the performance met his parents in the lobby, with Keating there for support. “It really was a testament to the power of the music, the words, the performance,”
the conductor said. “We have the power to change the hearts and minds of people.” Keating promises the concert won’t be too serious, also drawing on popular music and some light hearted selections, too. “The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus does camp very well,” he said. “I can’t give it all away, but we’re going to sing a spoof on Patsy Cline called, ‘Patze Klein’, that was written for the Turtle Creek Chorale in Dallas. The chorus will also reprise its own “Miami Medley,” featuring “Moon Over Miami,” “The Miami Beach Rhumba,” and, of course, “Where the Boys Are.” Joining the men will be the ladies of the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Chorus, as well as alumni from the Gay Men’s Chorus.
