WNBA Player Sharnee Zoll-Norman Comes Out

Editorial

She becomes the third player to come out as lesbian in the league The Women’s National Basketball Association may be the league in the U.S. with the biggest number of out athletes. The latest player to come out as lesbian is Chicago Sky guard Sharnee Zoll-Norman, who made the announcement during an interview with Windy City Times. Zoll-Norman said she never officially came out --

even though she is married and has mentioned her wife in previous interviews -because she never thought there was any connection between her sexuality and her basketball career. “I never felt whether I’m gay, straight, bi, [or] whatever that my sexuality had anything to do with me as a basketball player,

and I don’t think it necessarily has anything to do with me as a person,” she said. The five-foot-seven inch athlete is playing alongside another out baller -- this year’s WNBA second draft pick, Elena Delle Donne. Last April, Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner came out in an interview with Maggie Sports Illustrated.

Foreign partners wil be eligible for permanent legal residence following DOMA defeat

A married binational couple from Fort Lauderdale could be the first in the country in which the foreign-born partner would be granted legal residence in the U.S, following the Supreme Court decision on the Defense of Marriage Act. According to the DOMA Project, a group of activists fighting to bring equality for gay

binationals, Julian Marsh and Traian Povov received the notice of approval of their green card petition from U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services just two days after the SCOTUS ruling. The couple announced the news on June 29. Popov, who has been in the U.S. since 1998 and was born in Bulgaria. Marsh, a DJ and

music producer, is a U.S citizen. The two met in Florida and got married in October 2012 in Brooklyn, New York, as Florida does not allow gay marriages. “We expect additional approvals of green card petitions in the coming days,” Lavi Soloway, attorney and cofounder of the DOMA Project said in a statement.

family code to include gay unions. Congressman José María Villalta said that the bill, approved by 45 of 57 legislators on July 2, establishes the right to the recognition of same-sex unions “without discrimination contrary to human dignity.” “This opens the door for recognizing the rights of same-sex unions,” Villalta told La Nacion.

Manrique Oviedo, a conservative politician who mistakenly voted in favor of the bill, is now urging Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla to veto the bill in order to ensure that same-sex unions are not legalized. Villalta also said it’s not uncommon for “politicians [to] approve projects without reading them through.”

This is what happens when legislators do not fully read bills: it seems like Costa Rica’s Congress “accidentally” approved same-sex unions. ‘The Simpsons’

A trailblazer cartoon for the gay community Sergio N. Candido

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

Forget about Edith Windsor and Harvey Milk, the current wins for the LGBT community in the U.S. should be credited in part to “The Simpsons,” a German researcher said. In his new book “Behind the Gay Jokes Homosexuality in ‘The Simpsons,’” scholar Erwin In het Panhuis analyses 490 scenes in the American satirical cartoon and over 70 gay characters, arriving to the conclusion that The Simpson’s has supported gay rights long before “Will and Grace” ever aired. Panhuis said that patriarch Homer is a more sexually complex character than he appears at first glance. “Homer has kissed other men on the lips more than 50 times throughout the series but despite that he’s happily married to his wife,” Panhuis told told German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, as reported by The Local. “Homer is sometimes heterosexual, sometimes gay and sometimes homophobic.” The Cologne-based academic also pointed out that in 2005, The Simpsons was the first

cartoon series to dedicate an entire episode to gay marriage. In 1997 the show won a GLAAD award for an episode in which Homer thinks his son, Bart, will turn gay, but later tells his son that he’ll support him whatever his sexuality is. “[The Simpsons] set the standard for cartoon series…and I believe it’ll always be a trailblazer,” Panhuis said.

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

+Macklemore’s ‘Same Love’ Sees Spike Following SCOTUS Decisions Rapper Macklemore’s pro-gay anthem “Same Love,” released last year, has seen a newfound rise in popularity following the LGBT rights wins in the Supreme Court. According to the New York Times, on June 26, the same day the U.S. Supreme Court repealed a section of the Defense of Marriage Act and dismissed a challenge to the ruling that overturned California’s Proposition 8, Macklemore’s hit song rose to No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, up from No. 65 three weeks ago.

The song also saw a rise in other platforms. For example, it moved up to number 5 on the Rap Songs charts for online streaming, and it saw a 23 percent rise in sales the week of the Court decisions from the previous week, reaching a total of 788,000 copies sold. “It’s been phenomenal,” Tom Poleman, the president for national programming at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, which operates 850 stations, told NYTimes. “Everything we are seeing

shows it’s going to be another monster hit for them.” The song is arguably the most straightforward, pro-gay lyrics out there, with some of its lines saying: “The right wing conservatives think it’s a decision/And you can be cured with some treatment and religion/ Man-made rewiring of a predisposition,” or “No freedom till we’re equal, damn right I support it.” “I just wanted to hold myself

+ Anti-Gay Marriage Constitutional Amendment?

Conservatives may have lost a battle, but they don’t think the war is over concerning marriage. On July 1, Kansas Republican Tim Huelskamp introduced a bill to amend the U.S. Constitution and ban gay marriage, the Huffington Post reports. “This would trump the Supreme Court,” the Tea Party congressman told HuffPost, referring to the U.S. Supreme Court to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that defined marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Similar amendments have been introduced in the past, but none has succeeded. In 2006, the last time the House voted on the measure, it failed to pass; the final vote count was 236187. It needed 290 votes to pass. Among those who were in favor of such amendment were House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and VP Republican nominee Rep. Paul Ryan. “What did not happen is what the court and then the folks pushing for [DOMA repeal] hoped would happen: that it would end the debate,” Huelskamp said. “The debate is not over.” The bill already has 28 Republican cosponsors. They include: Representatives Joe Barton of Texas, Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma, Mo Brooks of Alabama, Paul Broun of Georgia, Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, John Fleming of Louisiana, Trent Franks of Arizona, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Ralph Hall of Texas, Andy Harris of Maryland, Randy Hultgren of Illinois, Sam Johnson of Texas, Walter Jones, Jr. of North Carolina, Jim Jordan of Ohio, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Mark Meadows of North Carolina, Randy Neugebauer of Texas, Steven Palazzo

In an almost Orwellian fashion, the parents of a 24-year-old Russian activist helped police detain his son, who was protesting for his right to celebrate gay pride in the city of Kazan. As Gay Star News reports, activist Dmitry Isakov was arrested twice in the city of Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan, on June 29 and June 30. Isakov had asked authorities if he could hold a gay pride march in the city. When they denied him, he went on the street with a poster to protest the decision. It turns out it was his own father who helped police bring the man down to the ground, while his mother snatched the protest sign away from her son’s hands. Isakov was later released and went on to protest the same way the next day, but this time police allegedly beat him, gay rights activist Nikolai Alekseev told GSN. “[Isakov] was beaten, insulted and threatened by police and his current location is not known! We need maximum attention to his case! He might be in real danger,” Alekseev said. Isakov posted on Facebook that he was okay, but had been badly beaten by police after his second protest.

news national AIDS Conference Under Fire for Not Focusing More on at Risk Populations Christiana Lilly

christiana.lilly@gmail.com

A map showing the areas most covered at the last International AIDS Conference Photo courtesy of MSMGF

Hundreds of organizations and countries are calling on the International AIDS Conference to provide more coverage of populations that are at risk for HIV. According to a report by seven different organizations, only 17 percent of the abstracts presented by the conference focused on men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who inject drugs, and sex workers. Transgender people had less than 1 percent of abstracts dedicated. The conference was hosted in Washington, D.C. in July 2012 (aids2012.org). “I don’t want to say it’s surprising because the history of the global AIDS response is kind of characterized by not paying enough attention to the groups that are at highest risk because of political difficulties and because of stigma because of discrimination,” said Jack Beck, senior communications associate at the Global Forum on MSM & HIV. “So it’s unfortunately not surprising but we hope that this report can be a tool that we can use to advocate for a more appropriate response in the future.” Beck said that for years, many advocates have felt that there wasn’t enough coverage of these four populations, but it wasn’t until the 2010 conference that they decided to research the topics and abstracts.

6

// 7.10.2013 // SFGN.com //

The report was a group effort by the Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF), Global Action for Trans* Equality, the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health, the Harm Reduction Coalition, the International Network of People Who Use Drugs, Different Avenues, and the Global Network of Sex Work Projects. The groups also found it disturbing that 40 percent of the information these groups focused on were individual risk factors, as opposed to interventions and solutions. Every two years, the MSMGF does a global men’s health survey of thousands of men to learn more about access to basic services, treatment, discrimination, and violence. In the last survey, only 35 percent of the more than 6,000 surveyed had easy access to condoms. “These are really basic problems that we think people should be addressing in conjunction with discussing things like combination prevention,” Beck said. Before the conference, MSMGF conducted a survey of 300 advocates and service providers to men who have sex with men, asking what are the top three issues for the population. The results were prevention, stigma and discrimination, and law and criminalization. At the conference, it was soflagaynews //

only covered 1.6 percent, 0.5 percent, and 0.3 percent, respectively. Other issues of concern were covered in the report, and the writers also included five recommendations as the conference gears up for its next meeting in Melbourne, Australia in 2014. More than 200 organizations from 73 different countries have endorsed the report. In response to the report released in June, the International AIDS Conference issued a statement about two weeks later, saying that abstracts only account for half of the conference. Also, the conference stated that only 28 percent of participants thought topics could be “better covered” in Melbourne. “It is important to acknowledge first and foremost that 100% of sessions at AIDS 2012 focused on HIV and AIDS. It is, no doubt, difficult to find exclusivity within the conference programme, as sessions are purposely built to address a variety of topics, populations and cross cutting themes,” the response stated. In regard to the number of abstracts covering men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who inject drugs, and sex workers, “if all oral abstract sessions which address these key populations are

SouthFloridaGayNews

taken into account, then the numbers increase considerably with 24% for MSM, 8% for transgender people, 15% for PWID and 16% for sex workers.” The conference response also noted that not all abstracts proposed for the conference can be covered. However, in a study produced by MSMGF, three HIV experts -- including one who served on the International AIDS Conference panel previously -- looked over the abstracts submitted and found that in their opinion, dozens of abstracts shouldn’t have been rejected. A rebuttal to the response was given to the conference. However, there is hope, as the International AIDS Conference members invited the groups to collaborate on future conferences. Beck pointed out that their report does not discredit the conference and its merits, but is simply constructive criticism to enhance it. “We were really happy that they read the report and they are starting to explore different ways they can take action to make sure the conference content addresses to the populations appropriately,” Beck said. “We want [the coverage of topics] to be congruent with what the community says it needs, and right now it’s just not.”

Major Grant Awarded to Proposed AIDS Museum Steve Stagon’s dream just got $94,000 more realistic Jacob Long Almost six months after announcing non-profit incorporation and a slew of investors, Steve Stagon can now say he’ll be getting a building to house his anticipated World AIDS Museum and Educational Center. This new accomplishment is a result of the Community Foundation of Broward’s $94,000 grant to the museum, specifically to get a home. It’s called a “capacity building grant” and Stagon is excited to use it. “This allows us to open the first World AIDS Museum ever in the world,” Stagon

At the celebratory event (hosted by Jimmy Cunningham and Tom Stravecky with food by Jason King of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, wine by Michael Iacino, and flowers by Bobby Kyser of Panache) Stagon, who was diagnosed with HIV 23 years ago, displayed his significant progress at turning his longtime dream for

Having managed the complex challenges of 501c3 incorporation, and having enlisted the support, partnership and funding of community leaders, Stagon led an enthusiastic crowd through a sampling of proposed displays, and through an outline of the structure and purpose of the museum. Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Dean Trantalis, one of the advisors on giving out the hefty grant, said the money is important for preserving the history of HIV/AIDS. “It is a bold undertaking,” he said, “but the challenge is well-placed in the hands of the Museum’s board.” Stagon told SFGN that this is phase one of the endeavor to open the museum on Wilton Drive, and hopes to do so by the end of 2013. While he has a spot in mind for the museum, Stagon didn’t want to share where it is exactly because it’s It’s Steve Stagon’s dream to found a World AIDS Museum. The Faces of Homophobia Meet your Congressmen Who Co-Signed the Constitutional Amendment to Ban Gay Marriage Unhappy with the Supreme Court’s recent decisions in favor of gay marriage, some Republicans just won’t give up. In fact, 29 congressmen in the House of Representatives co-sponsored an amendment to the constitution banning gay marriage, which would effectively overrule the Supreme Court. Luckily for gay marriage proponents a majority of the Senate is already in favor of marriage equality including several prominent Republicans, and much of the House is as well, effectively stopping any potential amendment in its tracks. It takes a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress to pass a constitutional amendment and then it takes three-fourths of the states to pass it as well, a seemingly impossible hurdle the way things are going in the fight for gay marriage. Regardless of that SFGN wanted to highlight those still adamantly opposed to marriage equality.

Prior to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could deny insurance to people with pre-existing conditions such as HIV infection. Much of the HIV care system was set up to deal with this exclusion. With the end of this exclusion, major changes loom in HIV health care. For example, ADAP is the “payer of last resort,” meaning that people have to exhaust all other options, before ADAP will begin to pay for HIV meds. Anti Gay Laws Pass in Russia Activists Declare Vladimir Putin to be ‘The Czar of Homophobia’ Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

While Americans are celebrating emerging gay rights this year, and a favorable United States Supreme Court decision on marriage equality, Russian gays are not so lucky. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a Kremlin-backed bill that stigmatizes gay people and bans giving children any information about homosexuality. The new law bans “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.” According to the Associated Press, it is “part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values over Western liberalism, which the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church see as corrupting Russian youth.” It was passed unanimously by the lower house, and vigorously supported by Putin. The new measure imposes large fines upon anyone who provides information about the LGBT community to minors. It introduces fines of up to 5,000 rubles ($156) for citizens who disseminate information “directed at forming nontraditional sexual setups” that may cause a “distorted understanding” that gay and heterosexual relations are “socially equivalent.” The fines go up to as much as 200,000 rubles ($6,250) if such “propaganda” is posted on the Internet. John Aravosis, the author of Americablog, a popular gay rights advocacy site, labels the new bill “as one of the most draconian anti-gay laws on the planet.” Aravosis says it is “now literally illegal in Russia to say that you are gay. It also virtually bans gay pride rallies.” The shocking new law comes only seven months before the Russians are to host the Winter Olympics in their country, in the city of Sochi. “This should send chills to anyone in the LGBT community who is planning to attend or participate in the Olympics,” Aravosis said. The popular pro gay blogger has called the Olympic committee response to the legislation “anemic.” He points to a letter the Human Rights Watch sent to the International Olympic Committee demanding they enforce their charter rules banning discrimination. Russia,

which decriminalized homosexuality in 1993, is also bound by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. Nevertheless, homophobia remains prevalent throughout the country. The new law bans gay-affirmative speech, such as equating gay and heterosexual relationships. The bill applies to Russians and foreigners alike, as well as media organizations, permitting the government to arrest and detain gay, or pro gay advocates for up to 14 days, before deporting them. Organizations face fines of up to one million rubles and a shutdown of their activity for 90 days. When questioned about the measure, Putin was quoted in The Telegraph as denying the anti-gay nature of the bill, claiming “We are talking about protecting children from the respective information... we ask that other countries do not interfere in our regulation.” Public figures and Russia’s dominant Orthodox Church have hailed the law. But Russian gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev called the law a “historical mistake,” and said that it would be appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. Publishing a statement of GayRussia.ru, he declared “history will prove that Putin is making a mistake…future generations are unlikely to forgive.” Putin is himself divorced. Alexeyev was the organizer of an aborted Moscow gay pride parade in May. While Russian courts have apparently banned gay pride parades for the next one hundred years, independent polling in Russia shows that 39 percent of Russians now believe gays and lesbians should have the same rights as heterosexuals. Meanwhile, when the bill went into law on July 1, Russia arrested all 60 participants in St. Petersburg, arguably its most liberal city. Among those arrested were five samesex couples that had attempted to apply for marriage licenses. While Russian riot police had to step in to protect pro gay advocates, many were first beaten badly by anti gay counter protesters, soflagaynews //

who threw eggs, smoke flares and stones at those rallying. Rainbow flags were stomped on and burned. Pictures showing the bloodstained faces of rally goers went viral on the Internet. Earlier, in the year, when Russia’s State Duma, the lower house of parliament, first considered the bill, Russian police detained 20 gay rights protesters who protested in opposition. They staged a well-publicized ‘kissing protest,’ a stark change from a January rally, which led to skirmishes and violence. Still, the bill passed unanimously anyway, with a vote of 434-0. Putin himself backed it. At a press conference in Amsterdam in April, Putin refused to acknowledge the law was discriminatory. He stated “the rights of sexual minorities are not being violated… these people enjoy all the same rights and freedoms as everyone else.” Meanwhile, gay rights advocates in Amsterdam protested his appearance signed petitions in opposition of the new law, and staging a rally, which encouraged attendees to dress up in colors of the rainbow. Activists have censured the new law as “state-sanctioned homophobia,” noting that in the past Communist leaders have previously branded even Elton John’s outfits at his concerts as “gay propaganda.” The new Russian law would arguably

prohibit the use of the rainbow in public as “gay-affirmative speech.” The law was passed on the heels of another controversial Kremlin move. On July 3, Putin signed into law a separate bill banning same-sex couples in foreign countries from adopting Russian children. Meanwhile, in London last week, their LGBT pride parade included numerous protests against the new Russian law, with condemnation of President Putin as the new worldwide “Czar of Homophobia.” One such advocate was Peter Tatchell, who is the director of a human rights advocacy organization bearing his name. Well known for participating in Moscow gay pride parades, Tatchell was arrested at pro gay rallies there four years in a row, from 2008 to 2011. Tatchell condemned the new measure as “symptomatic of President Putin’s increasing authoritarianism and his wider, generational crackdown on civil society.” He believes that while the legislation was ostensibly designed to minimize the dissemination of “so-called gay propaganda,” the ultimate effect will be much wider. “In practice,” Tatchell states, “any statement that homosexuality is natural and normal will become criminal, as will the provision of gay affirmative counseling or safer sex information to LGBT youth. Putin

seems hell-bent on forcing gay people back into the closet and locking the door.” Like Aravosis, of the Americablog, Tatchell says the new bill “is one of the harshest laws against LGBT freedom of expression anywhere in the world.” Americans have also begun to rally against the new law. On June 30, one day before the St. Petersburg arrests, a first-ever Russian float made its debut at New York’s Gay Pride rally. Representing the LGBT community from Russia and other former Soviet republics, the float was jubilantly received by attendees. “It turned out to be amazing and wonderful,” said Pasha Zalutski, the parade float’s organizer, a 31-year old Belarusian native. Zalutski, a professional translator, born and raised in Minsk, said that he just “wanted to be able to do something that would be ‘impossible’ back at home.” He added, “Here in New York, I can just publicly, openly, unashamedly say to the entire world, ‘I’m gay.’” Yelena Goltsman, a native of Kiev, is the founder of RUSA LGBT, a New York based community and advocacy group for Russian speaking gays. She told Radio Liberty that her presence in the New York parade was to send a message: “We are marching for political reasons- because we want people to know what is happening...we hope to bring change.”

The new law bans: spreading information aimed at forming non-traditional sexual behavior among children, suggesting this behavior is attractive and making a false statement about the socially equal nature of traditional and nontraditional relationships.

news national DaVinci Realty ‘Assistant’ Back in Jail Denny Hughes Indicted on New Charges Joseph Elliot Two years ago, Denny Hughes, 40, formerly an assistant of Da Vinci Realty, was charged with ten counts of organized criminal real estate fraud and grand theft by the State of Florida. His oft-postponed trial is scheduled for October, but Hughes is in trouble again, deep, deep trouble. Hughes is back in jail this week, his bond revoked, facing a new 12-count federal indictment, accused of feloniously orchestrating an ongoing unemployment fraud scheme that netted him more than $200,000. Charged with wire fraud and identity theft, Hughes is now facing another 23 years in federal prison, on top of the pending state charges. Formerly of Wilton Manors, Hughes is locked up on a no bond hold. He stands accused of identity theft and using those identities to illegally and fraudulently collect unemployment compensation. According to the indictment, Clancy’s former employee created a corporation in 2008, Mortgage Relief America, (MRA) and then obtained personal information of 21 people, classifying them as employees. While out on bond for the Wilton Manors real estate fraud, Hughes then stole their names, dates of birth, and social security numbers. In order to obtain and build wage credits for the purported employees, he then filed fraudulent quarterly UCT-6 forms with the Florida Department of Revenue classifying them as employees of his firm, MRA. Deceptively creating the appearance that these individuals had previously worked for MRA, Hughes then filed false unemployment claims using their names, seeking unemployment compensation benefits on their behalf – utilizing the personal identifying information he had illegally seized. Once these fraudulent unemployment compensation applications had been submitted to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the indictment then charged Hughes with “materially false, misleading, and fraudulent claims to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Unemployment Compensation Program over the internet and/or over the telephone, causing unemployment compensation funds from the Florida Department of Financial Services to be deposited directly into his own bank account via electronic funds transfers.” In total, the defendant allegedly defrauded the State of Florida out of $206,000. The

alleged criminal activity occurred while Hughes was out on bond for the state real estate charges. The Broward County state attorney’s office has also been charged with a number of felonies in Broward County, including one count of organized fraud, six counts of second-degree grand theft and three counts of third degree grand theft. Those charges are related to a 2009 arrest after the Fort Lauderdale police investigated a complaint against Hughes in which he was accused of stealing more than $50,000 from a former client. First reported by SFGN in 2011, Hughes was paid the monies as an escrow deposit for the sale of a home. But Hughes never showed up for the closing and after repeated attempts by the client to recoup his funds, a police complaint was filed. When police conducted a supplemental investigation, discovering eight additional victims from Fort Lauderdale, Oakland Park, and Wilton Manors, the State of Florida then amended the charges to include an organized scheme to defraud. Some of the victims were from the LGBT community. Hughes allegedly defrauded the nine victims out of a total sum of $234,780. When his employer, Vince Clancy, was asked to comment upon his subsequent arrest last year, Clancy instead turned his sights on SFGN, warning the newspaper not to write another story about Hughes, or he would “underwrite a lawsuit against SFGN.” No such lawsuit was ever filed. At the time, Clancy stated, “Hughes is employed at my company as an assistant and has shown himself to be very competent in his duties. I support him fully.” Once a real estate broker with his own blog, Hughes has since had his license revoked by the Florida Association of Realtors.

There is No Shame in Telling the Truth

Last week, Bobby Blair, and his puff paper, The Florida Agenda, declared war on this paper. He can lie about us all he wants. When it is legitimately newsworthy, we will tell the truth about him. It is not my fault his partner ripped off a community foundation he directs for thousands of dollars by playing with its ATM debit card at gay strip clubs. It’s his fault. It is not my fault his partner, who runs this health and fitness foundation, got arrested and tased by the Fort Lauderdale police last July, with five baggies of purported crystal meth in his wallet, while resisting arrest. It’s not my fault he is on probation now. It’s his fault. It’s not my fault that Bobby Blair’s own books showed he paid himself back $3,000 of foundation funds after only loaning it $2,450. It’s his fault. It is not my fault he classified multiple withdrawals as ‘payroll expenses’ while acknowledging he has no paid staff. It’s his fault. Bobby Blair dispatched a writer to declare these reports as ‘bullying.’ Please, save it. His authorities are both charlatans making up stories. You might as well have had John Wayne Gacy say he sheltered runaway boys. It’s not my fault Vince Clancy of Da Vinci Realty chose to hire, stand by, and defend a crook that ripped off LGBT homebuyers for more than $200,000. It’s his fault. As you can see from today’s paper, his dear friend is back in jail on new federal fraud charges. Still backing him, Vince? Still threatening to sue us for printing the truth? Tell you what – take your best shot. It’s not my fault a past director of the Pride South Florida Board stole more than $80,000 of LGBT donations and went to jail for embezzlement. It’s his fault. He is the one locked up. We just did what no other paper in town would do. We printed the truth about him. It’s not my fault that Pride’s current director, Marc Hansen, refuses to share with the LGBT community tax notices the Pride South Florida Board has received from the IRS in connection with their failed audit. With the exception of John Fugate and Roger Handevidt, the Pride South

Florida Board is now linked into a repulsive conspiracy of silence, trying to cover up their failed IRS audit from 2010 to 2012. It’s not my fault they failed this audit. It’s their fault. We just want to report the news about it. You can’t bargain with the truth. The fact that I had a problem with the Florida bar in 2002 was my fault, but that fact does not give Brian Neal the right to rip off a community foundation in 2013. The fact that I advocate for the legalization of marijuana or represent people who break the law does not mean this newspaper is going to ignore the fact that a local gay businessman in a high profile lawsuit was arrested for running a marijuana grow house out of his backyard. This is a time when the LGBT community in America is celebrating multiple victories on many levels, from marriage equality to ensuring equal benefits for all LGBT couples. A newspaper such as ours, partnered with CNN and the Sun Sentinel, and the Florida Press Association, prints not only the wonderful and the wins, but also the warts and the wounds. That is why SFGN exposed a local gay businessman who ran a Ponzi scheme defrauding local LGBT homeowners at Wilton Station. It was his fault he went to jail. Mario Careaga is a popular local gay businessman who is regrettably accused of manslaughter for running over a Miami Heat cheerleader two years ago while intoxicated. It is a tragedy all around, with pain everywhere, but when he goes to court next month, we will report on the outcome, because that is what a newspaper does. We don’t relish these stories, any more than when we told you a popular local gay realtor, Ric Gibson, troubled by demons, committed suicide two months ago. But we report them. That’s our duty.

We don’t need to suck up to a phony board of advisors to tell us what to print. We are legitimate journalists. In the face of wrongdoing, we do not look the other way. We owe a trust to over 300 different businesses that support our free paper with their hard-earned dollars. We don’t run away from the truth or trade it out for advertising. We seek out the truth and publish it every Wednesday, distributing our paper to 522 locations in four different counties. We print a beautiful content-driven national magazine, the Mirror, which you can pick up at Harvey’s on Castro Street in San Francisco or at Vinyl on Broadway in Denver. It was in New York for gay pride last week. Unlike the other paper in town, sued by its last two printers for default, we aren’t on the stock market hyping ourselves with some worthless penny stock that transparently misleads investors about their net worth. There is a reason our motto is ‘we reach people who care.’ SFGN is a small and local business, paying our rent and bills on time, and honoring our obligations to you and others. As far as the other paper in town goes, far better people have said far worse about me. With your faith and friendship, your help and support, it will not deter SFGN from publishing a credible and conscientious newspaper each week. We owe that to you, and it is a debt we honor every week. soflagaynews //

My HIV Diary Releasing

Each week Ryan Dixon shares his story of taking HIV medication. Photo courtesy of Wakalani

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 44

(June 28 to July 4) A good stride has finally started this past week here in Atlanta. I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet some amazing people that have enabled me to let go of the angst I was harboring in my heart towards others. I did finally get to go to a doctor and my numbers are still on par with what they were from my last medicine study visit. My viral load is still undetectable and my CD4 count has actually risen to over 800 and is still at 39 percent saturation. The stress I was felling the last few weeks is a product of my own doing, and I accept that. I was making myself feel like shit and that, of course, wasn’t helping the stress any. A good hard workout at the gym allowed for my physical release and just a quick session with a healer allowed for a spiritual release

that was badly needed. I finally woke up with a smile on my face and joy in my heart. There’s a reason that healer is named after an angel. He was definitely a God send. Work has been pretty steady. If nothing else, I look forward to writing this diary week. The mental release it provides has been one of the only bright spots recently. Freelancing for the first time has been a learning experience and I find myself emailing or calling journo friends to ask for advice or for help. I’ve broken down and gone back to my roots – waiting tables. It was either that or be broke. On the Brightside, Starbucks wasn’t hiring. God knows I don’t want to come home smelling like coffee anymore. I had a talk with my doctor and everything is set for me to be back in Florida at the beginning of August. I suggest everyone make plans accordingly to come see me at Alibi or Rumors one night and get me blackout drunk. It would be appreciated. After this August visit I’ll be transferring to the same study in Athens, GA. Even though it’s an hour away from me, I’ll only be going every three months while coming back with an equal month’s supply of medication. Things are going fine. I don’t plan on returning to Florida anytime soon outside of my doctor’s visits. Atlanta is the place for me. A little patience and faith has gone a long way and will continue to do so.

Lactic acidosis can happen in some people who take COMPLERA or similar (nucleoside analogs) medicines. Lactic acidosis is a serious medical emergency that can lead to death. Lactic acidosis can be hard to identify early, because the symptoms could seem like symptoms of other health problems. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following symptoms which could be signs of lactic acidosis: – feel very weak or tired

– Other medicines that contain emtricitabine or lamivudine (Combivir, Emtriva, Epivir or Epivir-HBV, Epzicom, Trizivir, Atripla, Truvada, Stribild) – rilpivirine (Edurant) – adefovir (Hepsera) What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking COMPLERA?

Talk to your healthcare provider about how you can take part in this registry.

– have a fast or irregular heartbeat •

Worsening of Hepatitis B infection. If you have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and take COMPLERA, your HBV may get worse (flare-up) if you stop taking COMPLERA. A “flare-up” is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before. COMPLERA is not approved for the treatment of HBV, so you must discuss your HBV with your healthcare provider. – Do not let your COMPLERA run out. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare provider before your COMPLERA is all gone. – Do not stop taking COMPLERA without first talking to your healthcare provider. – If you stop taking COMPLERA, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do blood tests regularly to check your HBV infection. Your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your liver enzymes before and during treatment with COMPLERA.

Bone problems can happen in some people who take COMPLERA. Bone problems include bone pain, softening or thinning (which may lead to fractures). Your healthcare provider may need to do additional tests to check your bones.

Changes in body fat can happen in people taking HIV medicine. These changes may include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (“buffalo hump”), breast, and around the main part of your body (trunk). Loss of fat from the legs, arms and face may also happen. The cause and long term health effect of these conditions are not known.

Changes in your immune system (Immune Reconstitution Syndrome) can happen when you start taking HIV medicines. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. e’d be hard-pressed to detail Naked Grape’s delicious menu because it may change by the time you go in for a visit. But that’s the best part. The restaurant’s food and drink menus change every few months, usually with the seasons. At any given time, the bar has 80 different wines, offering nearly 35 of them by glass. The bar specializes in boutique and limited production offerings. The wine list changes almost weekly. They are the self-proclaimed “wine without attitude” bar. Behind the counter, Tim will let you sample whatever wine you’d like until you’re satisfied. Your experience shouldn’t be limited to the way a bottle looks or how a description sounds. Taste until you find something you’ll enjoy. When you do, don’t hesitate to buy a bottle. Naked Grape has a retail license where you can purchase your favorite new wine to go. For summer, we tasted the 2011 Anno Domini Moscato. While red wine drinkers tend to stay the course—even during the hot and humid South Florida months—we were happy to sip the cool, sweet Moscato as the sun went down. With half-price bottles on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it’s hard to pass up this delicious Italian drink. While wine may be in the restaurant’s

name, don’t ignore the tapas. Indulge in cheese decadence with the Swiss fondue: paired with bread cubes and your choice of salami or green apples. Look out for the extensive offerings of charcuterie and cheese – served with baguettes, condiments and garnishes including chutney, fruits, olives and more. Try the shrimp flatbread: a large piece of toasted flatbread topped with homemade pesto, roasted red peppers and shrimp. This pairs great with the Moscato or another light, sweet wine. Close out your evening with one of the four specialty dessert options, including a personal pan Toll House cookie, baked in a mini cast-iron skillet and served with a tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream. Everything is made fresh to order while also offering naturally and organically grown food. The restaurant buys local whenever possible, supporting their “farm to fork” initiative. Food is served until one hour before closing, which means on the weekends, you can eat until midnight! While the restaurant is open TuesdaySaturday evenings, private parties and events on Sundays and Mondays are available upon request. With their extensive wine list, delicious small plates and knowledgeable staff, you’re never too far away from the Naked Grape Wine Bar.

Perez Hilton: Miami Boy Makes it Big in Hollywood J.W. Arnold email

It’s been years since Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr. left Miami for the glitzy, glamorous world of Hollywood. But the gossip blogger, now known around the globe as Perez Hilton, has been just as adept at making headlines himself as he is spreading buzz about everyone’s favorite celebrities. The openly gay Hilton found himself living in a glass house as he took criticism for outing gay celebrities early in his career. He has also been sued by a number of the industry’s outsized egos, but legal action didn’t slow down the flamboyant Tinseltown personality. Three years ago, Hilton dropped lots of weight, setting off speculation in his competitors’ blogs that he had undergone gastric bypass surgery. And most recently, Hilton joined the ranks of many of Hollywood’s A-listers when he became a father. As a judge at the 2009 Miss USA pageant, he famously asked Miss California about her views on same-sex marriage resulting in negative comments that possibly cost the blond beauty the title.

Hilton returns to South Florida this weekend and will again find himself deciding the fate of an aspiring beauty, this time judging the Ultimate Miami Drag Queen competition on Saturday at the Magic City Casino. The blogger took a few minutes to talk candidly with South Florida Gay News about life in Hollywood and the recent Supreme Court decisions on marriage equality, as well as reflect on fatherhood and what’s next for the 35-year-old personality: You grew up in Miami. Are you looking forward to coming back? I always look forward to going back to Miami, now more than ever because I don’t get to go back home often. How has Miami changed over the years? Since I left Miami it’s been wonderful to see the explosion of culture in the city—from the redevelopment of the downtown and Brickell areas to Art Basel and the other great events that the city now hosts.

How does life and the gay scene in Miami compare to the West Coast? I don’t know how the gay scene in Miami is these days because I don’t live there, but what’s great is the variety of the gay nightlife in Miami and also the proximity to Ft. Lauderdale. You’re going to be a celebrity judge for the Ultimate Drag Queen contest. What will you be looking for in the winning contestant? I’m going to be looking for fierceness obviously. You can’t have a drag queen who isn’t fierce. And fierceness can be manifested in many different ways, whether it be best makeup or someone who’s really funny. If you could ask a contestant any question (a la Miss America), what would you ask? I would have them show me their talent (a la Miss America). Recently, the Supreme Court overturned Prop 8. What effect do you think it will have on Hollywood? Will more stars come out? I think more stars will come out because it’s definitely easier to be openly gay and successful in Hollywood. I also think more gays will come out because it’s also harder to be closeted in Hollywood. But, what’s more exciting to me are the repercussions of the Supreme Court’s decision for everyone across America. Speaking of stars, do you have any hot gossip for our readers? Who is the biggest mess in Hollywood these days and can you ever narrow it down to one? Amanda Bynes is in need of help and it’s sad and bizarre how (her escapades) are entertaining for a lot of people. It’s kind of like a train wreck. We’re all watching. You’re a father now. Is fatherhood everything you expected? Fatherhood is everything I expected, definitely, and more. More so because it’s new to me. I’ve never experienced it before and it definitely has taught me a lot about life and adapting and constantly being on your toes. It’s a lot like being a professional athlete. What’s your funniest or most memorable experience of fatherhood so far? Every couple of days there’s a funny experience. The most recent one was when I smelled something funny and I looked down and saw he had pooped through his diapers and all over himself and onto me. Since he was in shorts I was covered in baby poop and, as a new parent, I lost that gag

reflex that I used to have when something disgusting used to happen. So, of course, I had to Instagram a photo of myself covered in baby poop. Will little Mario have two daddies some day? Ideally. Do you expect your son to carry on the family business? I don’t know. I never thought I would be doing what I’m doing so I don’t know what he might do. I would just stress to him the important of an education. In addition to your successful gossip blog, what other projects do you have coming up? I am working on a few television ideas. It would be a lot of fun and a new challenge to do something consistent on television.

From Porn Star to Music Star A first listen to Colton Ford’s ‘The Way I Am’ Gary M. Kramer

Former gay porn star Colton Ford Submitted photo

Listening to Colton Ford’s latest CD, The Way I Am, (his third full-length album), there is no doubt the ex-porn star can sing. He displays his range and diverse musical stylings on this eclectic album, which is now available on iTunes. Ford hits and holds some high notes starting with the opening track “First in Line (Shadow of the Night).” He closes his album by exposing his soulful side on “All My Love” and “Alone” (both co-written with his childhood friend Ron Schrader). These two jazz-y compositions that sound like adult contemporary R&B songs, and may even prompt listeners to close their eyes and fantasize about Ford. In between, the singer focuses on his strong suit—dance and electronica—tracks that will likely prompt folks to head to the dance floor. The best tunes on The Way I Am are the ear candy ones. Listeners will feel the energy and enjoyment Ford projects in his upbeat songs. When he asks the musical question, “Can You Feel It,” it is hard not to answer a resounding Yes! And “Realize,” arguably the best song on the CD, is an infectious tune that features a catchy “yeah, yeah, yeah” in the background and an especially throbbing backbeat. The single “Let Me Live Again” and the track “Look My Way” are terrific dance anthems that should get extended play at the next White Party. “Look My Way” in particular, features a driving drum and bass and layered lyrics. Ford’s voice just soars when he sings, “Because there’s nowhere to run/You’ll be falling in love/With just one look/I I can give you everything that you desire.” It’s irresistibly seductive. Not surprisingly, several tracks seem engineered specifically for the dance

floor. Ford invites listeners to groove along to “Get To You,” (featuring Ultra Naté), “Change (You’re Gonna Have To)” and “The Music Always Gets You Back.” These songs show Ford has rhythm (as if there was any doubt), and he matches his phrasing to the syncopated beats to juice the words and give them an extra pulse. What comes across most on The Way I Am is that Ford likes to play with his instrument—that is his voice. He shifts his register in songs like “Let Me Live Again,” and “Look My Way,” among other tracks, but he may be best when he sings in deeper tones. Both “The Music Always Gets You Back,” and “Alone”— the album’s longest song—benefit from Ford maintaining a consistent vocal range, even when the dance tune changes up its melody. Curiously, two songs that switch things up are perhaps the weakest tracks on the album. The aforementioned ballad “All My Love” and his title track, “Just the Way I Am” suggest Ford is trying too hard, and struggling to find his groove. “All My Love” sounds cheesy when it bridges, and “Just the Way I Am” mixes a disco beat with something like an accordion? Both songs sound too busy and overproduced. But these misfires fail to detract much from an otherwise worthwhile album. With The Way I Am Ford is putting himself out there in every track. His intent may be to show (or perhaps prove?) his musical chops and ability to mix musical genres. The diversity is welcome, and there is much to admire on this album. Ford manages his versatility well, even if his strategy suggests he is trying to please all his fans. As a result, this may have the unintended effect of listeners testing the whole album and purchasing just the tracks they desire. soflagaynews //
