Music Video Contest for Õ Ex-Gay Pride DayÕ Get out your video cameras! The newly formed “ex-gay” advocacy group, Voices of the Voiceless (VoV), is holding a music video contest where the winner will have the opportunity to debut “their music video live at the ’First Ex-Gay Pride Celebration,’ scheduled to take place in Washington, DC later this month. The video and event is the brainchild of Christopher Doyle and Moon Richard Cohen who founded VoV, an offshoot advocacy group of “ex-gay” ministry the International

Healing Foundation. Last month, the group announced the first annual “Ex-Gay Pride Month,” urging all “ex-gays,” parents of “ex-gays,” and allies to rally in Washington, DC. on July 31. “This will be a historic day for ex-gays across the country as we unite on Capitol Hill to lobby Congress to recognize former homosexuals,” Doyle said in a statement. “Now that former homosexuals are a protected class against discrimination in Washington, D.C., this opens up the door for our unique stories

to be heard and achievements recognized as we celebrate the First Annual Ex-Gay Pride Month!” “Create your own music video! Amateurs or professionals can enter,” a flyer by VoV reads. “Video should be 3-5 min. in length. Winner selected based on original song content, appeal and professionalism. Winner debuts their music video LIVE at the First Ex-Gay Pride Month Celebration.” Deadline to submit video is July 30. Entry Fee: $30.” From our media partner EDGE

ENDA Passes Out Of Committee In 15-7 Vote A Senate panel has approved a bill that would ban job discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The measure won support from all the Democrats and three Republicans on the 22-member committee, signaling it has a strong chance of passage in the full Senate.

The vote is the latest victory for gay rights advocates and another signal of rapidly changing attitudes in Congress. It comes after the Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that same-sex spouses are entitled to the same federal benefits as other married couples in states

where gay marriage is legal. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he expects the full Senate to take up the measure later this year. It is not clear whether GOP leaders in the House will consider the bill. From the Associated Press

Tilda Swinton Stands Up for Gays in Russia Shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the highly controversial anti-gay “gay propaganda” bill into law last month, Academy Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton is defending the country’s LGBT community by proudly holding a rainbow flag in front of Moscow’s Kremlin. The image of Swinton has gone viral and spread across social media websites, like Facebook and Twitter, like wildfire, Gay Star news reports. “In solidarity. From Russia with love,” Swinton, who won the Academy Award for the 2007 film “Michael Clayton” said in a statement. The law in question bans so-called “homosexual propaganda” and fines large sums of money to people, organizations and businesses, that give information about the LGBT community to Russia’s minors. Similar laws have already been enacted in various regions in Russia, including St. Petersburg.

2

// 7.17.2013 // SFGN.com //

The anti-gay measures don’t stop there, however. On July 3, Putin signed a law that prohibits samesex couples in foreign countries from adopting a child from Russia. Swinton joins other celebrities, like Madonna and Lady Gaga, who have called out Russia’s government for passing anti-gay measures and trying to silence the country’s LGBT community. Conservatives in the U.S. are lauding the anti-gay bill. “You admire some of the things they’re doing in Russia against propaganda,” said Austin Ruse, president of the U.S.-based Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute. “On the other hand, you know it would be impossible to do that here.” As the Associated Press reports, Ruse plans on traveling to Russia this summer to meet with government officials and civic leaders. Condoms in Prison? California considers proposal Associated Press California prisoners have unprotected sexual contact, forced or consensual, even if both are illegal, and this reality often leads to the spread of HIV and other diseases in prisons and in communities where felons are paroled. Setting up a difficult conversation, one state lawmaker says it’s time to give inmates a way to hzpractice safe sex behind bars to reduce an infection rate that experts say is much higher than that of the general population. The proposal from Oakland Democratic Assemblyman Rob Bonta comes despite a law prohibiting any sex between inmates, which creates a conflict that concerns both supporters and opponents of the legislation. “It’s a felony for prisoners to have sex while they’re in prison, so I don’t think it’s good government for the state to encourage inmates to break the law,” said Republican Assemblyman Dan Logue of Marysville. Bonta’s proposal would require the California Department of Corrections and

Rehabilitation to make condoms available in five prisons by 2015 and expand the program to each of the state’s 33 adult prisons no later than 2020. If it becomes law, California would be the second state behind Vermont, which has a fraction of the inmate population, to provide condoms to all prisoners. Canada, most of the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa already take that step, according to legislative researchers.

+125,000 Celebrate Pride in St. Pete Heavy rains and rumbles of thunder couldn’t dampen spirits at St. Pete Pride June 29. The 11th annual promenade and street festival brought in an estimated 125,000 people to the city’s Grand Central District, marking it as the largest festival in the city’s history and securing its status as the largest LGBT Pride event in the state. “It’s just a little rain,” said Bennett King, who attended the festival with his boyfriend and a group of friends. “As long as the lightning stays away, I plan on being here all day long. At least it’s not hot like it has been in the past. With temperatures staying comfortably in the mid-80s—and the 70s during the worst part of the rain— festival-goers got a reprieve from the

often scorching temperatures that often accompany St. Pete Pride. “I think I prefer this,” said Jackolynn Maurice, who drove from Fort Myers to take part in the festival. “Sure, everything is wet, but it’s the most comfortable St. Pete Pride I’ve ever attended!” The surge of participants exceeded 2012’s estimated 100,000 attendees, and St. Pete Pride Executive Director Eric Skains credits the festival’s popularity and, especially, recent decisions from the U.S. Supreme Court eliminating part of the Defense of Marriage Act and allowing Californians to resume same-sex marriages. “We should change the motto to: ‘For liberty, justice and equality for

all’ after those decisions,” Skains said. “We always have reason to celebrate who we are, but this year is extremely special for our community, and people recognized that and are out in force.” The rains began lightly early in the morning before skies cleared enough for the promenade to launch from the Metro Wellness and Community Center parking lot. Within a half hour, however, the first round of heavy storms struck, soaking parade units and forcing many along the parade route to seek shelter under awnings and in businesses. But once that round of storms passed, people immediately flooded Central Avenue, almost creating a gridlock of friends, families and happy reunions.

+ Virginia. and NC Gay Marriage Bans Challenged

The ACLU of Virginia said last week that it will file a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s gay marriage ban while the ACLU of North Carolina said it was gearing up to attack the state’s year-old constitutional prohibition against same-sex marriage. Claire Guthrie Gastanaga of Virginia’s ACLU made the announcement less than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits to married gay couples. The justices also left intact a lower court ruling overturning California’s gay marriage ban – a decision that was based on a legal technicality and did not address the law’s constitutionality. Gastanaga said lawyers from the ACLU and the gay rights group Lambda Legal will argue that a Virginia constitutional amendment and three underlying statutes violate the federal constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law. The amendment and statutes prohibit gay marriage and deny recognition of such marriages sanctioned by other states. “Thousands of Virginia couples are already living the deep commitment associated with marriage, without legal recognition of their relationships,” Gastanaga said in a written statement. “There is no rational reason for denying these loving couples the freedom

“I only see her once a year, and it’s always at St. Pete Pride,” said Sarasota resident Lindsay North, who had an arm wrapped around Charlotte Dexter of Tampa. “Life gets so busy throughout the year that you sometimes forget how important people are to you. I knew I’d see her here and we’ve promised to do better at staying in touch.” As with every year, there were a handful of protestors attending St. Pete Pride, but the numbers have seemingly dwindled from year to year. The few protestors carried signs with Bible verses condemning homosexuality but mostly remained quietly on the sidelines of Central Avenue. From our media partner Watermark According to legal experts, U.S. Supreme Court rulings effectively striking down the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Prop. 8 ban on same-sex lay out a minefield of questions and problems for same-sex couples in Illinois. Illinois currently offers civil unions to same-sex couples, a designation that, by state law, is supposed to be the legal equivalent of marriage. But many believe that the effective strike down of DOMA will not help Illinois civil union couples, whose relationships will not be viewed as marriages. That is causing some legal experts in the state to offer unexpected advice: leave Illinois and get married.

to marry and every reason to grant them the same recognition by civil authorities that opposite-sex couples have.” The ACLU of N.C. said its effort to challenge the North Carolina marriage ban adopted by voters in May 2012 starts by seeking to expand an existing federal lawsuit against a state law that same-sex couples cannot be recognized as equal parents of children. That lawsuit was filed in federal court in Greensboro on behalf of six North Carolina same-sex couples who support socalled second parent adoptions. North Carolina Attorney General Roy soflagaynews //

Cooper is defending the state adoption law. The ACLU said it is asking the Democrat to agree to allow the civil-rights group to tack on a new claim challenging the state’s samesex marriage ban. A Cooper spokeswoman had no immediate comment. If Cooper declines, state ACLU legal director Christopher Brooks said, the group will ask the court to expand its lawsuit.

The Aftermath

LGBT advocates may be making a new case for passing equal marriage legislation in Illinois: cutting down on confusion.

SouthFloridaGayNews

Same-sex couples applying for a marriage license in Indiana could face a charge of perjury simply for submitting the application to their county clerk. Marriage applicants sign their paperwork under penalty of perjury, Tippecanoe County Clerk Christa Coffey told WLFI-18 for a story Tuesday. “So if there is something on there that they know is false, then they would be eligible to be charged with making a false statement or committing perjury, which is a Class D felony,” Coffey said. A Class D felony carries a possible penalty of six months to three years in jail and a possible fine of up to $10,000.

Summer is here — which means a vacation most likely isn’t far away. Whether you’re hitting the road, jumping on a plane or even enjoying a “staycation” at home, you’re probably looking forward to some down time with your family. But not every aspect of your life should be relaxed. Specifically, you don’t want to take a vacation from investing — which means you need to become a diligent, year-round investor. Here are a few suggestions that can help: • Keep on investing. Don’t head to the investment “sidelines” when the financial markets experience volatility. You don’t want to be a nonparticipant when things turn around because, historically, the early stage of any market rally is generally when the biggest gains occur. (Keep in mind that past performance of the market is not a guarantee of future results.) • Keep learning. In just about any classroom, the best students are the ones who get the most out of their education and put their learning to the best use. And the same is true of the investment world: The more you know about the forces that affect your investments’ performance, and about why you own the investments you do, the more likely you are to make the right moves — and the less likely you’ll be to make hasty and unwise decisions. • Keep your focus on the long term. As an investor, you need to look past those events — such as natural disasters, recession fears and political instability abroad — that may have noticeable short- term effects on the financial markets but little impact over the longer term. So instead of making investment decisions based on today’s headlines, think about what you want your financial picture to look like in 10, 20 or 30 years — and take the appropriate steps to help make that picture materialize. These steps include following a long-term, disciplined investment strategy that’s suitable for your individual needs, making adjustments as time goes on and working with a professional financial advisor who knows your situation and can help you

make the right choices. • Keep looking for growth opportunities. To achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you’ll need to own growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and other investments that contain equities. The percentage of your holdings devoted to stocks should be based on your risk tolerance, time horizon and proximity to retirement. But no matter what your situation, you want a portfolio that’s designed to help you meet your investment goals. • Keep relying on “hardworking” investments. To help ensure your investments are working hard for you, choose those vehicles that can help you in multiple ways. For example, when you invest in a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, your money grows on a tax-deferred basis, which means it can accumulate faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Plus, you typically fund your 401(k) with pretax dollars, so the more you put in each year, the lower your taxable income. Furthermore, with the choices available in your plan, you can create a good mix of investments. Enjoy your vacation this summer. But no matter what the season, don’t take a break from investing. Your efforts may pay off nicely for you in the future. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Darcy J. Michael G— ngora Hopes to Become Miami BeachÕ s First Openly Gay Mayor Christiana Lilly

He may have a baby face, but he’s a force to be reckoned with. Michael Góngora, 43, has risen the ranks of Miami Beach politics, first helping with a campaign and now in the race for the seat of mayor in November. Not just an ordinary race, his win could make history with Miami Beach voting in its first openly gay mayor in the battlegrounds of hate and bigotry in the days of Anita Bryant. “He feels that he’s at a point and he really wanted to go for it. He felt he would be more effective running for mayor than he would be for running for city commission again, which I agree with and I completely support,” said his step sister, Maya Sherrill. A lifelong Floridian, Góngora was born in Coral Gables to a Cuban father and a mother from Birmingham, Ala. The two married young, so Góngora’s paternal grandmother cared for him while his parents worked. She taught him Spanish and his grandfather would tell him stories of living in Cuba as a businessman and a city commissioner. “I grew up very close to my cousins and my uncle and my aunt. When I was a little boy my grandparents actually owned a duplex, and my uncle and my aunt and my two older cousins lived in the duplex so I

grew up spending a lot of time with them,” he remembers. His parents divorced when he was young, and during high school Góngora moved with his mother to St. Petersburg where he graduated from Lakewood High School. There, he also spent more time with his step sister, Maya Sherrill, who is only three weeks younger than him (leading to claims that they’re twins). The two had grown up spending weekends together, and when she joined him at Lakewood High, they became even closer. “I had been in a very small town and he was just so wonderful, showing me around and everything,” Sherrill said. It was also during their high school years that Sherrill noticed they had similar tastes, like a love of Madonna and Marilyn Monroe. She suspected that he was gay, and was right. “He came out to me at the end of high school right when he graduated and so he had been out with me for a while.” After high school, Góngora moved back to Coral Gables to live with his father and attend the University of Miami. There, he lead what he called a “double life,” hiding his sexuality from his family but meeting men while he was out on the town. After soflagaynews //

all, he grew up going to a Christian school, his father was a conservative Cuban man, and his mother was from the South and the daughter of an Assemblies of God preacher. It wasn’t until he was 21 that he was outed to his parents -- by accident. Sherrill and Góngora went to St. Petersburg for Mother’s Day weekend, which included a night out. Góngora gave his number to a man, who ended up calling his mother’s house and leaving a message while the three of them were out to brunch. “When we came home we were listening to the messages and I had a message from a male with I guess a somewhat effeminate sounding voice,” Góngora laughed. “My mother was like, ‘Who is that? It doesn’t sound like a very nice person.’” According to Góngora, sensing the tension in the room, Sherrill blurted out, “Come on, we all know he’s gay.” “I remember that. I just didn’t remember me being quite so obnoxious about it,” his sister said about the incident. “I didn’t mean to blow him out of the water, but I guess I just didn’t want it to to be uncomfortable for him, you know? I wanted it to be OK.” The siblings’ mother ended the conversation and refused to discuss it. While

Góngora drove back home to Coral Gables, she called his father to tell him the news. To Góngora’s surprise, his father easily accepted the news. Today, both parents completely embrace their son and his sexuality. As a practicing attorney, Góngora was president of the Miami Beach Latin Chamber of Commerce during the 2001 election cycle. A Cuban county commissioner suggested that Góngora run for the Miami Beach Commission. Although he didn’t throw his hat in the ring, he studied the election and ended up supporting the man he would have run against. Becoming a part of city politics, he was appointed to the city’s Community Development Advisory Committee. “I never realized I had a passion for public service until that time,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m single and don’t have children and this is a way for me to give back, but I find it very rewarding and very fulfilling.” After his appointment to the Community Development Advisory Committee, Góngora became deeply involved in the city; he soon became a part of the Design Review Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and then a special magistrate for the county. In 2006, he decided to try his hand

at politics and joined the race for Miami Beach commissioner. He won 35 percent of the vote, but per city law, the winner must have at least 50 percent or the top two move on to a run off. It was between him and Deede Weithorn, and the two were invited to local journalist Jim DeFede’s morning radio show to discuss the election and city issues. At that time, Góngora was openly gay, but didn’t discuss it while serving on boards or during the campaign. “At the time we were bitter enemies,” Góngora said of Weithorn. “We’re on this radio show and she was -- I can tell -looking for a way to kind of out me because I had been pretty closeted in my campaign by not mentioning it.” Weithorn claimed Góngora had issues with women, which Góngora refuted. Finally, “she just kind of blurted it out. She was like, ‘You have an issue with women because you’re gay.’” A number of Góngora’s gay friends and gay activists were upset by what transpired on the show, but it ended up sending the LGBT community to the polls. He won the election, as did Weithorn a few years later, and today he considers her “a good friend of mine.” Winning the election, Góngora became Miami Beach’s first openly gay politician and the press ate it up, writing profiles and always adding in stories that he is openly gay. “I felt that the press was primarily focused on me being gay more so than my qualifications, my accomplishments and my ideas,” he said. “But I embraced it and I’ve since come to realize how important it was to have somebody openly gay be elected, although there have been a number of gay and lesbian candidates over the years for Miami Beach public office.” “I’ve demonstrated that it’s OK that I’m gay, that doesn’t mean that I’m going to just focus solely on LGBT issues. I’m bright, I read my agenda, and I’ve shown that gay people have the same concerns that straight people have.” Now, he is serving his second term as city commissioner with one of his proudest moments being the sponsor of the city’s tax equity ordinance for domestic partners

(southfloridagaynews.com/articles/miamibeach-shooting-for-perfect-score-in-hrcsmunicipal-equity-index/123581) “I am not sure how he manages what are essentially two full time jobs, but he does,” Rosa de la Camara, Góngora’s boss at Becker & Poliakoff, wrote in an email. “He somehow manages to combine both parts of his life very efficiently.” Now, after two terms as commissioner, Góngora is in the run for taking the top seat as mayor of the city. “Prior to his announcing it, I certainly encouraged him to run for mayor. I think anybody who knew him wanted him to run for mayor,” said Jackie LaLonde, a friend and his appointee to the Charter Review Board. “The other candidates, in my mind, some of them have institutional knowledge but they lack compassion and caring about their citizenry. Instead they care about one institutional block, which might be the business folks. So for me, Michael cares about everybody and that’s important.” LaLonde met Góngora while he was running for a second term when the South of Fifth K9 Association was working to get a dog park in its neighborhood. Facing opposition, Góngora took on the task and was “instrumental” in getting a dog park in South Pointe Park. She then encountered Góngora again as a condo board attorney dealing with two cases in her neighborhood. “I’m not proud of this, but I was a classic South Beach apathetic voter who didn’t really get engaged in any sort of civic issues whatsoever,” LaLonde said of her days before getting involved in the city. “He just kind of showed me that if you do get engaged that you can change your life and certainly change and better the life of many different constituents. In his campaign, he’s kicked it old school going door-to-door to talk to residents about his run and what issues are on their mind. When she can, his sister comes along. “It’s just really good they see what his heart is and he’s seriously committed... sometimes we would go to a door and we would be there for 40 minutes,” Sherrill said. “It’s a lot of work when you do these elections. It turns everything upside down

but you all just pull together and have to make it happen.” Should he win the election, he’ll make history in the city as its first openly gay mayor. He’s already worked with a plethora of LGBT groups: Aqua Foundation, Gay Pride Committee, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in the Winter Party, Trevor Project, SAVE Dade, Equality Florida, and Unity Coalition. However, none of his top three issues he wants to tackle are aimed at the LGBT community specifically (see our sidebar of the race), as his goals go beyond just the city. As mayor, he would like to be a voice for the city to work on statewide and national issues, such as gay marriage, employment discrimination, and immigration reform. “Miami Beach is already the most progressive community in the state and we are a leader when it comes to all types of diversity issues,” he said. “Unfortunately

I can’t as the mayor implement changes within the city because those are state and federal issues but I can be a voice for our community and I’ll travel to Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. and wherever I need to to help effectuate these important changes.” For LaLonde, who is a lesbian, having Góngora as mayor would not only do the city good in all arenas, but it would be an important landmark in the LGBT movement. Personally, she has seen how far South Florida has come. “As a lesbian, I would absolutely like to see a nail put in the coffin of Anita Bryant. I lived through that, I had friends who were teachers during that time. It was a horrifying, terrifying witch hunt whose permutations lasted for 40-something years. Is it time to put a nail in that coffin? You betcha, and from my perspective, it’s the most important person we could elect from that vantage point.”

Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 45

(July 5 to July 11) You have no idea how great it feels to be back here in Florida. Oh, in case you missed that, I’ve decided to return to the Sunshine State for the time being. While I loved the city of Atlanta and what it had to offer, I didn’t like the life I was living. Bouncing from couch to couch wasn’t a healthy lifestyle. Even though I was working, it was mostly free; I was staying busy doing what I love to do. Being back in Florida is going to make things a lot easier on me and my involvement in the medicine study. No more traveling or transferring in the near future for this guy. I’m still torn on whether or not I’ll be continuing with the study once my one year mark is

reached. Drug assistance is better here in Florida than Georgia if I decide to stay. Of course that all means nothing if I decide to not quit taking my meds. No need for assistance if I’m in a study with free medicine. I know of two things that I need to get back into doing here in Florida for my own wellbeing. I need to get back into talking with a person every once in a while. I’m a firm believer and advocate in mental health services. Even if you don’t have any issues or problems you’d like someone else to help you sort out, just having a person there to help you keep your life in check helps so much. Stress is something that we could all use less of in our lives, and with as much as I’ve had to deal with in the last month, the less for me the better. The other thing is getting my hands back in community involvement. While I loved Atlanta, I found my hands too idle for my liking. I couldn’t find my footing within the gay community to help make a difference there. There were plenty of opportunities, but I never felt like I fit in anywhere there. The open arms and willingness of my friends and family here in South Florida lets me know that I’m not going to have a problem getting my groove back. Stella has nothing on me.

Define Your Purpose - Create Your Legacy By Anthony Timiraos, CEO/President atimiraos@our-fund.org

Take a few moments to imagine your funeral. Not exactly a pleasant thought but one worth serious consideration, no matter your age. Everyone you know and perhaps some you never knew, has gathered to honor your life and the memories you leave behind. But what did you really leave behind besides your personal belongings? What part of you remains after you have gone? Your legacy – it is how you will be remembered and the contributions you made to society while you were alive. Your legacy is something you create during your life solely to benefit future generations,

12

// 7.17.2013 // SFGN.com //

something you may never see come to fruition. Just like that grade school teacher who teaches students to read and write may never see those students succeed in their profession. And that farmer who planted grape vines knowing he’ll never live to taste the wine. A legacy is a gift you leave behind expecting it will benefit future generations. At the same time, not expecting anything in return but a personal satisfaction that perhaps someone in the future will benefit from your actions. Think of John F. Kennedy and the Peace Corps or Harvey Milk and LGBTQ civil rights movement. They died

soflagaynews //

before their legacies were fulfilled, but they will be forever revered for their efforts. Just like that teacher’s act and the farmer’s vineyard, legacies don’t happen overnight—and they don’t happen by accident. They are carefully crafted over years of hard work and dedication. But you don’t have to give up your worldly possessions and become a saint to start building your legacy now. After you have thought about the needs of your family when you are gone, think about the concept of sharing a portion of yourself with your community – now and in the future. We are just leaseholders, our assets don’t really belong to us and we cannot take them with us when we leave this world. What we do with them during our lifetime is important. Therefore, before our departure, we should make arrangements for what we have in this world today and be certain that what we do today will be available to improve the lives of future generations. We have the opportunity to help current and future LGBT generations face a world that none of us can predict. Start creating your legacy today with a plan. Ask yourself these questions - what do I want to accomplish? What kind of impact do I want to make and where do I want to focus my legacy? What can I do today that will benefit our community far into the future? What can I leave behind to help generations to come? You can start by making a difference in your community today and consider sharing your knowledge with others in need. Volunteering for an organization that supports people in your community that are less fortunate is one of the greatest personal rewards you can earn during your lifetime. You can also create impact with a direct gift that provides non-profit organizations with the resources to work right away on the current pressing needs. Many others have created endowments that help provide annual payouts in their name in perpetuity. A blend of both, a direct and an endowed gift, can provide annual gifts for a fixed number of years. After you have decided on the impact you want to create, let’s begin working on your focus. If you know exactly the organizations you want to support with the impact you want to create, make a list. If your passion is the arts, HIV/AIDS, youth services, senior care and so on, you can designate one or more fields of interest as part of your legacy. Perhaps you wish to focus on the entire LGBT community by not placing restriction

on the distributions of the proceeds and allow a community foundation like Our Fund determine the most important need at the time of distribution. And finally, you can allocate a portion to all three – an allocation to specific organization(s), some to your favorite field of interest(s) and the remaining as unrestricted, allowing Our Fund to support timely issues in your community. Your legacy can provide resources that support your community through economic and political changes and help ensure that the LGBT community can address the future needs and threats that we cannot predict today. It is time for us to take responsibility for the future of our community. We have built it, we are part of it and now we have the opportunity and responsibility to secure its future. Create a legacy that defines you, honors you, and provides support and encouragement for future generations. Our Fund is a tax exempt non-profit organization with a mission to promote a culture of philanthropy by uniting donors with organizations supporting the LGBT community. Focused on expanding philanthropy in South Florida and working to develop stronger nonprofit organizations, South Florida’s only LGBT community foundation has been established to help build endowments that support donor’s charitable interests including organizations providing services throughout the LGBT community.

Supreme Cowards A tale of two Americas

“Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot” is a 1996 book by Al Franken that made it to number one on the New York Times best sellers list. In the 17 years since its release none of his Neanderthal attitudes have changed, Rush is still a Big Fat (Drug Addict) Idiot, and just as ignorant. He and his “dittos” continue to thrive in the “Bozone” (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality all he was capable of uttering was: “…all the gay issues are behind us… and the gays are free to turn out and support Republicans now.” Memo to Rush: The Supreme Court cowardly backed away from actually making same sex-marriage part of the Constitution and fulfilling the spirit of the Pledge of Allegiance of ... Liberty and justice for all. In the aftermath that followed the June 26 ruling people lost sight of the many

unresolved challenges we continue to face in the wake of a legally bland SCOTUS decision. This is by no means a comprehensive list: •Thirty states have amended their constitutions to prohibit same-sex marriage. • Federal law does not prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity... •...And over half of U.S. states offer no protection against employment discrimination, either. •Federal law does not prohibit housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity... •...And over half of U.S. states offer no protection from housing discrimination, either. •Federal law does not prohibit discrimination when providing access to public accommodations like restaurants, parks, hotels, and buses. •LGBT people face discrimination and other barriers to accessing health care. •Most states do not have laws allowing same-

sex parents to adopt children - six states outright ban them. What the Court has done is create and reinforce two separate Americas adrift in a cultural and legal divide. The rulings leave in place laws banning same-sex marriage around the nation, and the court declined to say whether there was a constitutional right to such unions. As a small consolation in clearing the way for same-sex marriage in California, the nation’s most populous state, the court effectively increased to 13, the number of states that allow it. The decisions will only intensify the fast-moving debate over samesex marriage, and the clash in the Supreme Court reflected the one around the nation. For now there’s no indication that the current Justices are interested in revisiting the issue. They could have seized the opportunity to make same-sex marriage legal nationwide based upon the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution but they chose not to. Changing institutions through constitutional cases is more often than not a very slow process. The Supreme Court for example did not overturn laws banning interracial marriage until almost 20 years after the California Supreme Court ruled that interracial couples had the right to marry. We are still far away from fulfilling the promise of the Pledge.. One nation, indivisible… As we stand we officially are the Altered States of America, the Divided States of America or the Confused States of America, take your pick. Gay marriage opponents, peppered with the obligatory Crazy Christers, said they were relieved to know that states still maintained their rights to remain as irrational, bigoted, homophobic and misguided as they each saw fit. While the other 13, the number of the original colonies, continue on their chosen path of clear logic, sensible enlightened

equality while fostering a more humane culture and system of government. We might try to engage Republicans in this sensible enlightened discourse but it is going to take time and effort. They do not believe in the theory of evolution so they will never evolve themselves. They are totally oblivious and they will go on pandering to old white religious fundamentalists and conspiracy theorists. They do not have an ounce of common sense so there can’t be any common ground. Let’s not forget that these are the same Republicans that after being kicked to the ground by an electorate that for some reason has a problem with politicians being completely out of touch with the pulse of the nation, learned absolutely nothing from that lesson. Sadly their national role will continue to be primarily stubbornly negative, regressive, seeking to block, delay, stall and filibuster measures that with time eventually become, no matter what, law of the land. These people will remain entrenched in certain geographical areas, backwards redneck/hillbillies islands, surrounded by a nation continuously, albeit slowly, growing more liberal, progressive and democratic. While our democracy has come a long way since 1776, true equality still doesn’t prevail. For the time being let’s be grateful for the small steps our country is taking. I am glad to see that two issues close to my heart are gathering speed and moving hand in hand: The legalization of marijuana and samesex marriage. Bible thumpers should support them both because they make perfect biblical sense. In Leviticus 20:13 it says: A man who lays with another man should be stoned.” Well there you go if the Bible says it, it must be true.

Peyton Hopkins (1919-2013) Joseph Elliot Peyton Hopkins passed away at the age of 94 last week. Hopkins is survived by his partner of 61 years, Jim Cooper, and his close friend and care taker Bob Dougherty. One of the original founders of Tuesday’s Angels. Drive This, Not That: 2014 Fiat 500L vs. 2013 Scion xB Steve Siler

Fiat’s new 2014 500L—or, “cinquecento elle,” if you want to say it correctly—was introduced this year as a livably-sized sibling to the cute-but-way-too-small 500 hatchback. And while the bubbly multipurpose vehicle (don’t call it a minivan) shares very little with the tiny 500, it does have a plenty of Italian personality inside and out, and a ton of space inside for people and things. Outward vision is also astounding, particularly if you get the huge panoramic

sunroof. The boxy Scion xB, on the other hand, has a bunch of room inside but little character compared to the molto Italiano Fiat. In spite of getting a mild refresh this year, the Scion is also a much older vehicle that doesn’t drive with the same acuity as the perky new Fiat. The Scion xB may be cheaper, but the Fiat feels richer and gets way better fuel economy to boot. And last but not least, “cinquecento elle” is just way more fun to say.

Beyond the Rainbow

soflagaynews //

The legendary entertainer Judy Garland once said, “My history of my life is in my songs.” Beyond the Rainbow: Garland at Carnegie Hall, a musical opening this weekend at Delray Beach’s Arts Garage, features 24 of Garland’s greatest hits, including Get Happy, That’s Entertainment, The Trolley Song, and of course, Over the Rainbow, to offer an unforgettable musical portrait of the child star who captivated a nation. The show, written by William Randall Beard with musical arrangements by David Lohman, uses Garland’s landmark 1961 concert at New York City’s Carnegie Hall as the setting for the musical, which was premiered by St. Paul’s History Theatre in 2002 and debuted locally by Florida Stage in 2006. But, points out Arts Garage’s Artistic Director of Theatre Lou Tyrrell, the production actually makes use of two Judys: One on the stage at Carnegie Hall (Jody Briskie) and the young girl in her mind (Nora Long) as she relives the most tumultuous moments of her career. “From Hollywood child star to the icon who gave it all on the stage of Carnegie Hall, we felt that her triumphs and tragedies were our own, and we embraced her as if she were a member of our own family….It’s the story and the music of an era to be cherished and savored,” says Tyrrell. Woven into Garland’s concert performance are the specters of her past, including her late mother and father, husbands, friends, co-workers and critics who dart in and out of her consciousness, as portrayed by three supporting actors. Tyrrell credits Beard with a theatrical portrait that avoids many of the stereotypes and caricatures that cloud contemporary memories of the performer. “Every drag queen has done Judy,” he admitted, “That is the challenge. It’s so important to try to find the human being underneath the veneer of familiarity that any one of these iconic celebrities may have become.” Tyrrell explained, “The job of a very talented drag queen to effectively caricature— it’s not a dirty word by any means—is to play Judy’s music and lip sync. There have been some who actually sing her material and do it well, but that’s why they call it impersonation. In the theatre, when there isn’t a cross gender issue or application, the thing that is most effective is to not imitate, but to become that person.” He credits the genius in Briskie’s interpretation, which earned the actress an

Ivey Award, Minnesota’s equivalent to South Florida’s Carbonell Award. Tyrrell calls her a “quintessential talent who absolutely channels” Garland’s distinctive personality, mannerisms and singing. Long, on the other hand, relies on the story to guide her interpretation of the young actress, an equally legitimate approach. The setting at Arts Garage, which also doubles as a cabaret and concert venue, lends itself to the non-traditional performance. The action is not limited to the stage, but moves into the audience where actors will actually be seated at tables. “It’s going to be a unique piece of theater,” he said, “because we’ll be able to use the cabaret environment to find the best way to deliver the play. That’s something we haven’t explored (at Arts Garage) yet.” He also reminds audiences they can bring food and wine to the performance, lending to the unique festive atmosphere at the venue, whether they’re enjoying theater, jazz concerts or cabaret.

Florida Supercon 2013:

Sci-Fi, aime, & comic books convention connects LGBT fans & allies Andrea Dulanto

adulanto03@gmail.com

Trekkies, Bronies and a revered pop culture icon who says “Oh Myyy.” The 8th annual Florida Supercon 2013 took place July 4 to 7 at the Miami Airport Convention Center, where thousands of fans came to celebrate sci-fi, anime, comic books, and other pop culture genres. Generally the mood was upbeat on Saturday, July 6 – how could it not be when people dressed as fantastical characters such as Aqua Man, Nightwing, and The Great Gazoo? However, there were also justifiable complaints. Onsite parking lots and overflow parking rapidly became full. An office building down the street had available parking. Yet, this was not an authorized lot and fans had to walk for a while in the heat to get to the convention. Individuals in wheelchairs or dealing with other issues were definitely not accommodated in this case. On Facebook, Melissa Z. voiced her concerns about the overcrowding at the convention and what could have happened in an emergency. Lauren A. stated that the ticket line was “interminable.” Also via Facebook, Florida Supercon provided a general response: “We have major plans we’ll be announcing very soon for next year’s show, which will allow for 4x the amount of space and parking we had this year.” Emails were sent to Florida Supercon organizers to elaborate, but they were unanswered at the time this article went to press. Despite these issues, a lot of good energy came from the prospect of seeing Saturday’s media guests, particularly LGBT activist/ actor George Takei who took the stage as the headliner. Takei’s role as Mr. Sulu in the original Star Trek brought out the Trekkies. But children went to see him as the voice of Ricardio from Adventure Time. A high school teacher at the Q&A microphone even mentioned Takei’s Broadway-bound musical, Allegiance, which deals with the unconstitutional internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. As a child, Takei and his family were incarcerated in one of these internment camps. He discussed the importance of raising awareness about these difficult periods of history. On the recent Supreme Court rulings, Takei shared “We’ve come a long way quickly… but

still have a way to go.” He reiterated that the work must continue in order for all states to achieve marriage equality. Lighter subjects included how his catchphrase “Oh Myyy” originated during an appearance on Howard Stern, and that “The Naked Time” was his favorite episode of the original Star Trek. He commented that at one point after Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the character of Sulu was set to receive his own movie or TV show. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen—but if the audience at Florida Supercon is any indication, it hasn’t affected Takei’s career. Some of the many other highlights on Saturday’s schedule included photo opportunities and a panel with the former cast members of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers including David Yost, as well as a Q&A with Erin Gray of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and The Guild. Gray spoke to SFGN about the response from her female fans, and her current soflagaynews //

passion for teaching Tai Chi. From 1979-1981 on Buck Rogers, the character of Colonel Wilma Deering broadened the perspective on how women could approach their careers. Gray noted that women often come up to her to say “you’re the reason I joined the police force or became a firefighter.” Although Gray works as the Founder and CEO of Heroes for Hire, a company which represents and books celebrities in personal appearances, she also continues to act. Her work in the indie film Dreams Awake, explores a spiritual awakening that is strongly connected to nature. These subject matters deeply resonate with Gray who teaches Tai Chi, a low-impact exercise known for its effect on the body and mind. She discussed how Tai Chi affects her on a daily basis: “It gets rid of all the barnacles… the soul is smooth, the heart is open.” Florida Supercon listed Gray’s Tai Chi class on the Sunday morning schedule. When asked how comic con audiences respond to

SouthFloridaGayNews

Tai Chi, Gray remarked that her classes sold out at DragonCon in Atlanta. She surmised that this may have happened because the “sci-fi audience… doesn’t have limitations on the mind. They are open to new ideas.” The presence of a group such as the Bronies may also give evidence of this openness at Florida Supercon. Bronies are adult, often male, fans of the animated show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The controversy arises because the target audience is thought to be young girls. The Bronies of South Florida had a table at Florida Supercon, and Eddie of Miami reported that he often gets “a raised eyebrow” when he shares his love for the show. Good writing is one of the reasons why he is a fan. Radish, 17, of Miami, pointed out that the show’s messages appeal to different audiences. For example, “all girls do not have to be princesses.” However, he did not think that Bronies are “breaking

social barriers.” They are “just fans of the show.” Yet, he conceded that other Bronies might think differently. “It depends on who you are.” Steven Rodriguez, 20, of Miami, asserted that “everyone is welcome” in the Bronies of South Florida including LGBT individuals. Rodriguez described himself as “bi-curious” and emphasized that the group is dedicated to giving all Bronies “a place to go” where they can share “the same interests.” Further evidence of open minds: Audrey Adar, 27, of Daytona, and Jessica Thompson, 26, of Fort Lauderdale, who dressed as Saturday Night Live’s The Ambiguously Gay Duo. The original characters were men, so their female version presented an interesting variation. Both Adar and Thompson are LGBT allies. Adar saw their costumes as a reminder of a “fun skit on SNL,” but also as a way to demonstrate “how people are embracing all forms of equality.” Thompson also affirmed their intention to “show support [for the LGBT community] through costuming.” The LGBT community also offered resplendent examples of cosplay. Jonathan Stryker, 22, of Aventura, was dressed as Aiolos from the anime Saint Seiya. His goldcolored costume included several armor pieces and a colossal set of wings. Stryker is gay with six years of cosplaying experience. “I’m an artist, so this is definitely a way to express myself.” As far as whether comic cons are a welcoming place for LGBT individuals, Stryker has found them to be one of the “most accepting, friendliest places” for gays. Etienne Valero, 24, and Patricia, 18, of Miami were dressed as Kurloz from the webcomic, Homestuck. On the topic of LGBT acceptance at comic cons, Patricia explained: “Nobody has a gender…Girls dressed as boys, girls kissing girls…who cares?” “It’s a lot more comfortable to be gay here,” added Valero. Their friend, Rae Wolfe, 17, of Miami, was also dressed as a Homestuck character— The Summoner. His costume displayed an impressive set of orange-red horns that

seemed to require an equally impressive amount of equilibrium. Since 2007, Wolfe has been attending comic cons “because you can make friends… and they appreciate the costumes that I make.” He also concurred with Patricia on the comic con environment for LGBT individuals. “Anime is indifferent towards gender. No one cares who you like.” “I can count the straight people that I know here with one hand,” he said. For more information about next year’s Florida Supercon, go to floridasupercon.com.
