‘Prison Break’ Star Comes Out to Protest Russia The actor revealed he’s gay after declining to attend a film festival in the country
Wentworth Miller, the star of the television show “Prison Break,” publicly announced he’s gay to protest Russia’s new anti-gay law. The 41-year-old actor came out in a letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, where he had been invited. “Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who
has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” the actor wrote in his letter to the festival’s director, which was posted on GLAAD’s website. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.” He went on to explain on his letter, dated Aug. 21:
“I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

Marriage Definition to Now Include Gay Couples Sergio N. Candido
sergio.candido@sfgn.com
It may seem like a small change in the wake of legislation granting equal rights, but the fact remains that millions of children around the world will be brought up with a definition of marriage that is LGBT-inclusive. According to Gay Star News, the Oxford Dictionary, the largest and most renowned dictionary of the English language, has changed its definition of marriage to include gay couples. The addendum, first reported on Aug. 25, has been effective immediately on OED’s website and will be printed on every future edition. The makers of OED added “the relation between persons married to each other’ to its definition ‘the condition of being a husband or wife,” and it also now has the note “the term is now sometimes used with reference to long-term relationships between partners of the same sex.” “We continually monitor the words in our dictionaries, paying particular attention to those words whose usage is shifting, so yes, this will happen with
marriage,” a spokesperson for Oxford Dictionary told GSN. In July, Queen Elizabeth II approved samesex marriage in England and Wales into law. Marriages will start in 2014.

+Cali Gay Mayor Launches Campaign to End Blood Ban When Campbell Mayor Evan Low was turned down at a local blood drive he had helped organize, the California politician lived firsthand what it meant being banned from donating blood. “It’s unfathomable to me as Mayor that I can host a blood drive in my community, but I can’t donate blood myself,” Low said in a statement on Aug. 20. “It’s time
to end this blanket ban on gay male blood donations, and show the rest of the world that FDA policy should be based on science and not 30-year-old fears.” Since then, Low has launched a campaign to get the FDA to stop discriminating against gay men based on an outdated 30-year-old law. The mayor started an online petition to pressure the
government body, which has garnered over 20,000 signatures as of publication time. The gay blood ban was enacted in 1983 during the early days of the AIDS crisis. Earlier this year, Canada partially lifted its blood ban, allowing gay men who haven’t had sex with another man in the last five years.

adding he “didn’t feel right as a gay man stepping foot into Russia.” Also, a New Jersey fan of the event put out an online petition asking the organization to boycott Russia. The petition got over 28,000 signatures in a very short time. For her part, MUO President Paula Shugart told The Advocate that while the event will take place the safety for staff, crew, and attendees, was the pageant organization’s “number one” priority.
Pinellas County, located in the Tampa Bay Area in Central Florida, has passed unprecedented protections for transgender people. The county’s board of commissioners voted 6-1 on Aug. 20 to approved replacing the word “sex” in the county’s human rights law with the word “gender,” the Tampa Bay Times reports. The new language extends transgender people’s legal protections in the county, giving them the right to protest if they are fired or denied housing because of discrimination. It also allows trans people to use bathrooms assigned to the gender with which they identify. The law, however, does not apply to religious institutions, public schools or businesses with fewer than five employees. The TBT writes that a majority of the people attending the meeting were actually against approving the legislation. “I don’t want a man because his gender identity has become female being able to use the same restroom as I do,” Dorothy Bonds, a Palm Harbor resident, said during the meeting.

Miss Universe Pageant Won’t Boycot Russia
Despite Andy Cohen dropping as co-host and 28,000 signatures asking to change the location of the event, the Miss Universe pageant will take place in Moscow, according to the organization. The Donald Trump-owned company released a statement saying that while it is “deeply concerned by the laws recently enacted in Russia” as well as the “violence experienced by the LGBT community,” the

show will take place Nov. 9 as scheduled. The Miss Universe Organization believes taking the event to Russia will have a bigger impact than boycotting it. “It has been our experience that the Miss Universe pageant provides a forum through which contestants from more than 90 countries, as well as their families and friends, forge bonds with citizens of a host country, helping to serve as a soflagaynews //
catalyst for social change,” part of the statement read. Last week, Bravo host Andy Cohen said he wasn’t coming back as host for the beauty pageant because of Russia’s anti-gay laws. “[T]heir discriminatory policies make it unsafe for the gays who live there and gays coming to work or visit,” he told E! News. “The law is that anyone under suspicion of homosexuality can be arrested,” he said,

Germany is about to join the small list of countries who legally recognize intersex people. According to The Local, a ruling from the Federal Constitutional Court will come into effect this November, which will allow intersex people to decide their own sex when they decide to do so. “If the child cannot be identified as female or male, the personal gender is to be left blank and to be so entered into the births register,” the new law states. While the law represents a milestone for intersex people, who are many times assigned a certain sex at birth and later in life realize they feel more comfortable with the opposite sex, it will have to be implemented to other types of identification besides birth certificates, Süddeutsche Zeitung writes. Also, having nothing could create difficulties for intersexual people travelling to some countries, and German law defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Justice Minister Sabine LeuthheusserSchnarrenberger said a “comprehensive reform” would be necessary.Australia passed similar legislation earlier this year.

GLAAD Says Movie Studios Aren’t Doing Enough for LGBT Equality New study finds LGB people in minor roles in movies, no trans people at all Jacob Long
Hana Mae Lee, Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick and Ester Dean star in Pitch Perfect Photo courtesy of Pitch Perfect’s Facebook
On Aug. 21, GLAAD (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) released its first ever Study Responsibility Index (SRI), research that mapped the quality and quantity of LGBT characters in films that came from six major motion picture studios. Those six major studios are: 20th Century Fox, Sony Columbia, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and The Walt Disney Studios. You can see the full report at http://glaad.org/sri. Important data? Damn right. “For a very long time, our data reports were based around TV because we could easily do it, but we’ve worked with film since our inception. When we saw major achievements on TV, it was time to turn our focus over to film,” said Matt Kane GLAAD’s associate director of entertainment media. “To be honest, we had an inkling that these studies wouldn’t be as inclusive as their television counterparts.” Of the 101 releases from the major studios in 2012, 14 of them included characters identified as LGB. No T. And “the vast majority of these characters were no more than cameos or minor roles,” GLAAD’s report reads. With television shows ramping up their duty on inclusive LGBT portrayal, Kane told SFGN that “TV itself may have become much more sophisticated, mature and experimental — raising the bar, per se.” Added to the study is the inaugural Vito Russo Test, a set of criteria analyzing how LGBT characters are represented in a

fictional work. Its criteria are simple: 1.The film contains a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT). 2.That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity (i.e. the character is made up of the same sort of unique character traits commonly used to differentiate straight characters from one another). 3.The LGBT character must be tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect. Meaning they are not there to simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline; the character should matter. Only six movies in 2012 (from the study) passed the Vito Russo Test. “As a major influence in American culture and one of our nation’s largest media exports abroad, the lack of LGBT characters in bigbudget films needs to change,” said GLAAD’s spokesperson Wilson Cruz – also one of TV’s gay characters. “Until LGBT characters are depicted in these films in a substantial way with more regularity, there will remain the appearance of LGBT bias on the studios’ part. Whether it’s an action hero or a supporting character, moviegoers should be able to see LGBT people as integral players in the stories told by leading Hollywood studios.”
GLAAD’s observation:
More than half of inclusive films (55.6 soflagaynews //
percent) featured gay male characters, while another 33 percent featured lesbian characters and 11 percent contained bisexual characters. Male characters represented 63 percent of LGBT images on screen, while female characters made up just 37 percent. Of the 31 different characters counted (some of whom were onscreen for no more than a few seconds), 26 were white (83.9 percent), 4 were black/African American (12.9 percent) and 1 was Latino (3.2 percent). There were no Asian-Pacific Islander or recognizably multiracial LGBT characters counted. The most common place to find LGBT characters in the major studios’ 2012 releases was in comedies, where nine of the 24 comedies released (37.5 percent) were inclusive. By comparison, 34 genre films (action, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.) made up the majority of the 2012 releases, though only three (8.8 percent) of those included any LGBT characters. Additionally, only one of 21 dramas (4.7 percent) and one of four documentaries (25 percent) were inclusive, while there were no LGBT characters in any animated or family-oriented films. “Entertainment media consumers are seeing diversity depicted on the small screen and LGBT-inclusive TV shows have consistently been among the most popular shows with audiences and critics,” Cruz said. “By being more inclusive, the Big Six studios can attract an audience that expects to see a diverse cast of characters.” While this study makes a strong case for
SouthFloridaGayNews
studios to get up and get more inclusive, Kane said it may not happen as quickly as next year. “This is a baseline for us to work with. Film has a long life, in getting it from project stage to the screen, so there may not be a huge change by next year,” he said. “But this will be a long-term discussion we have. Over time, we hope to see some progress on their ends.” The next edition of the Studio Responsibility Index will be released in 2014. Want to tell studios to be more responsible? ‘Visa: It’s Everywhere You Want to Be’ Unless You’re LGBT Advocacy Organizations want the Olympic sponsor to do something about Russia’s anti-LGBT law Jacob Long
Two human rights groups are telling Visa officials to speak out against Russia’s highly controversial anti-gay law, as the company everyone knows is a major sponsor of the upcoming Olympics there. The groups are Courage Campaign and Democracy for America, two advocacy organizations. And yes, before you ask, there’s a petition going around to make this a reality. If you sign the petition, you’ll be saying “I call on Visa, as an Olympic Sponsor, to speak out against the state-sanctioned violence and persecution of LGBT people in Russia. Visa shouldn’t profit off the Winter Games without ensuring the safety of LGBT athletes and fans alike.” Shouldn’t it? SFGN spoke to Eddie Kurtz, director of online programs over at the Courage Campaign. “Visa has specifically marketed itself as LGBT-friendly [they have a rainbow card]. They’re telling the LGBT community they want its business. It’s on them to ensure everyone involved here is treated fairly,” Kurtz said. “Any money being spent with any other company is most likely being spent using Visa.” There are many other sponsors, but Courage Campaign chose Visa. Kurtz said there are three distinct reasons for this choice. “When we think of the Olympics, Visa is just one of the sponsors that just stands out. Courage Campaign, like Visa, is headquartered in California. It’s in our backyard. There’s a feeling there we can work this effectively,” Kurtz said. “And finally, everyone has a Visa card. So we knew that our members would be Visa customers, making them very powerful in telling Visa they’re unhappy.” Visa had this to say to Buzzfeed, which broke the news: “As an Olympic TOP Partner, we believe in the spirit of the Games and its unique ability to unite the world in a way that is positive and inspirational. We are engaged with the IOC on this important topic and support its recent statement that sport is a human right and

the Games should be open to all, spectators, officials, media, and athletes, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.” IOC is the International Olympic Committee, and has the power to make some strong demands in regards to this issue. “I think the IOC can tell Russia this game isn’t happening unless everyone is guaranteed protection. Visa can threaten to pull its sponsorship for the same ultimatum,” Kurtz said. “This is a giant honor for Russia to host the Olympics. It’s sort of a giant stamp of approval from the world community and right now, on a number of fronts, Russia is not behaving well.” With IOC support or not, advocates think Visa should at least stand by its values of LGBT inclusion on this issue and that, if it doesn’t, it’s supporting the discrimination. “This is an opportunity for Visa to prove that they are a real ally of the LGBT community, not a fair-weather friend merely willing to pay lip service to LGBT rights when it aids the bottom line,” said Jim Dean, chair of Democracy for America. “As a major sponsor of the Olympics, until it vocally rejects the rulings, Visa’s silence can and should be seen as approval of the International Olympic Committee’s feckless support of Russia’s anti-LGBT laws.” CourageCampaign.org is an online organizing network that empowers more than 750,000 grassroots and netroots activists to push for progressive change and full equality in California and across the country. As a leading multi-issue advocacy organization, Courage Campaign’s work is supported by thousands of small donations from our diverse community. Founded by Governor Howard Dean, Democracy for America is the people-powered Democratic Political Action Committee. With over one million members nationwide, the group is a grassroots powerhouse working to change the country and the Democratic Party from the bottom-up.

news local AHF Partners With Broward Health Dept. Opens new Broward Wellness Center in Fort Lauderdale Jacob Long Monday, Aug. 26 was a good day for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and Broward County. Starting Sept. 3, AHF’s newest Wellness Center will open for service in Fort Lauderdale. But on Monday, Aug. 26, congressman Alcee Hastings teamed up with AHF President Michael Weinstein to cut the ribbon on the new center, which will provide free testing, alongside other services. Hastings spearheaded what came to be known as the Hastings Amendment, which brought $42 million to help access for AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (the infamous ADAP). When it passed in 2011, more than 3,000 people were on a waiting list to receive ADAP’s services. So the congressman’s got a history with aiding the LGBT community. And this recent product of a relationship between AHF and the Florida Department of Health is nothing too surprising. Beginning Sept. 3, the Broward Wellness Center will provide free testing and treatment for HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea under the medical supervision of Physician’s Assistant Shane Woodall. The center will be open from Mondays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays, 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. It’ll accept walk-ins. South Florida is both an epicenter for syphilis and new HIV infections. AHF is very proud to partner with the Department of Health to help improve public health in Broward County,” said Michael Kahane, Southern Bureau Chief for AHF. According to AHF, “one of the most pressing needs for Broward County is to control the spread of syphilis. Since 2000, the numbers of syphilis infections in Broward alone has increased by 400 percent, and

since 2005 the county’s syphilis incidence has been double that of Florida’s as a whole. Nineteen million people are infected with STDs annually in America.” Hastings serves as senior member of the House Rules Committee and is Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation. “Public misconception about STDs is widespread, in large part because many of them have no symptoms. The first step to preventing the spread of STDs and seeking treatment is testing. Knowing one’s status is vitally important to protecting one’s health. Many STDs can be easily diagnosed and treated, but only if an individual gets tested and is aware of his or her status,” Hastings said. “All sexually active individuals can take responsibility for their health — and the health of their loved ones and community — by educating themselves about STDs.”

Vote Now for Miami’s Inaugural Pink Flamingo Awards Andrea Richard
andrearichard954@gmail.com
The LGBT Visitor Center in Miami is hosting its first ever Pink Flamingo Awards, which are currently underway. Locals and tourists alike are voting for their favorite Miami hotspots and people. The awards have already garnered an outpouring of support in just a short time. Executive director of the Visitor Center, Karen Brown, has been planning the awards since January, but it was until three months ago, when the word got out via social media and email campaigns, that the idea took off. The response has been more than positive she said. “My favorite thing that has happened so far is watching the reaction on social media of the nominees getting so excited and honored for being nominated, she said. “I get goosebumps when I read someone’s Tweet or Facebook post saying they were nominated for one of the Pink Flamingo Awards. The awards, modeled off the People’s Choice Awards, are comprised of ten categories from favorite drag queen, restaurants, hospitality partner of the year, favorite tourist attraction, to favorite fundraising event.
Finalists were selected by a crew who works closely with the center, and voters can cast their votes via www.gogaymiami. com through Sept. 5. Each nominee is either a locally-owned in Miami, or an event that only occurs in Miami so supporting local businesses and people are spotlighted.  The unveiling of the winners will take place at a ceremony held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from noon to 2 p.m., at the Palm Ballroom in the Miami Beach Convention Center. One event highlight will include a luncheon honoring past and present city leaders who supported the opening of the visitor center three years ago, including Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, the Miami Beach City Commission and former City Commissioners Saul Gross and Victor Diaz. While the LGBT Visitor Center is a private nonprofit organization backed by grants, community support, and fundraising efforts, many people who see the name don’t realize the extensive programs it provides the community. It’s not solely a spot for tourism information. Community organizations host meetings there; there’s the Pink Flamingo Hospitality

Diversity Training Program for teaching hoteliers how to handle LGBT clientele; offering visitors personalized advice and services and resources on homelessness, domestic violence help, LGBT youth issues, HIV/AIDS prevention and testing, and free condom distribution. According to Brown, she feels a name change to ‘LGBT Visitor and Community Center’ would better encapsulate what the place is doing. And that the aim is to stay
abreast on LGBT entertainment trends and important issues related to the community. “What we care about is providing visitors with information and places that are LGBT friendly, welcoming and safe, she said. Visit www.gogaymiami.com or call 305397-8914 for more information. Tickets to the Pink Flamingo Awards luncheon cost $60 per person, which includes a gift bag, raffle ticket, and lunch.

Roasting marshmallows over a fire and singing camp songs can elicit fond memories for summer camp goers. But Camp Hope in Houston, Texas goes beyond traditional camp life by offering its program exclusively to children diagnosed positive with HIV/AIDS, creating a social experience that these children would not otherwise find. Camp Hope, open to children ages seven to 15, brings in campers from various cities around the United States. Holding Out for More Whistleblowers
Julian Assange Photo courtesy of New Media Days
On June 8, 1949, George Orwell published a novel describing a fictitious world gripped in the vise of constant war and a society held captive by the ever-watchful gaze of a shadowy totalitarian dictator known as “Big Brother.” The book has since found relevance again and again in our modern world. The main character, Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London, in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader. Sounds familiar? The first time I read “1984” I thought it was a science fiction masterpiece. Fast forward to the present nightmare. The biggest break western democracies could hope for came compliments of Osama Bin Laden on 9/11, delivered on a bloody silver plate. The witch-hunts of the past resumed in earnest thanks to The Patriot Act and all the consequences and government agencies that followed. The once proud American people gave up their freedom and privacy without batting an eyelash. Politicians and governments hate Democracy, even those who have risen to power through a democratic process. Since they are genetically incapable of being honest, they resent to be held accountable or questioned over their actions. Once they are in office they spend most of their time making sure the same people who voted them into power are kept in the dark and under close control, preferably through fear, lies and technology. There is very little difference between today’s NSA and the KGB of old. The KGB infiltrated organizations, business and

social groups, reporting anything that was considered anti-communist. The NSA and Homeland Security label anything that it doesn’t like, or wants to crush, as “terrorism” without distinction. It’s the password that allows them to smash open any door, the Constitution be damned, especially the Fourth Amendment. The rest is accomplished through all kinds of electronic surveillance and the gratuitous contribution of millions of Internet subscribers who blissfully, mindlessly and cheerfully post their lives and movements on social networks. That’s why Edward Snowden, Julian Assange, Army Pfc. Bradley Manning and Glenn Greenwald are, in my book, heroes. They are the avatars of our cyber society. They have turned the tables, paying a very high personal price. The latest disclosure, a few weeks ago, included an internal report, dated May 2012, that cited 2,776 violations over the previous year of rules meant to protect Americans ‘privacy.’ We have also learned that Google, Facebook, Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Bank of America, Amazon, and many others, will bend over backwards to provide the government with their data banks of information plus refusing service to any entity or person labeled non grata by the hysterical “global powers” on the verge of losing the little façade, credibility and respect they may have left. There is a high degree of pleasure in seeing governments squirm, scramble, scream, lie and run for cover over the half a million plus documents made public by WikiLeaks in the past, and now the top-secret documents leaked by Snowden, clearly showing the NSA overstepped its legal authority soflagaynews //
thousands of times since 2011. The reactions are predictable and full of senseless shrill sound bites for the benefit of the masses. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, said that informants should be executed. WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden are a step forward in our need and craving for freedom of information. On the other hand the backlash, not surprisingly, is not far behind. It is already in the making a new wave of imperial laws aimed at labeling as “terrorists” the digital Robin Hoods. It is interesting to see that both Snowden and Assange allied themselves with the “old media” newspapers, to push forward their agenda. It is fundamentally important that the credible publications now involved perform what they are supposed to be good at: verify, investigate and confirm the information released by Snowden or any other whistle blower. The new and the old tools of communications must come together to dissect, stimulate, analyze, expose and organize the debate more than ever before in our history. They must consolidate their position as watchdog for the public interest. At the same time it is extremely disturbing to learn that Glenn Greenwald’s partner was taken into custody while in transit at London’s Heathrow under the “antiterrorism” provision, only to learn the next day that the action was meant to send a message to those involved in the reporting of government’s secret surveillance. More likely it sounds like vindictiveness of those in power against journalists doing their job in exposing the abuse of people’s rights. As the drama unfolds over the fates of Julian Assange (still hiding in the Ecuadorian Embassy after more than a year), and Edward

Snowden (for the time being a “guest” of Russia), Bradley Manning is headed for prison while those who presided over torture go free. The three of them have been rendered stateless, imprisoned, or powerless. These are the old, bad tools of dictatorial political aggression. In reality the government is not even afraid of them, it is afraid of us. It is afraid of an informed, angry public demanding the constitutional government it was promised and it should be. We can only sit back and hope for more documents to be released applauding WikiLeaks for saying: “Leaking is inherently an anti-authoritarian act. It is inherently an anarchist act… We get information …vet it like a regular news organization…release it to the public, and then defend ourselves against the inevitable legal and political attacks.” Sadly, all of the leaks combined tell us one thing: “if we do not already live in a police state, we are hurtling fast in that direction.” With all the talking of how much information the government has been able to collect about all of us there is a touch of underlying farce in the whole story as it keeps unfolding: NBC News reported last week that The National Security Agency still doesn’t know exactly what and how much Edward Snowden took from them. There you have it, our only hope: The endemic incompetence of any government and its ability to screw everything up. Those who think Assange and Snowden are just hackers “threatening” our security should pay close attention to the words of Benjamin Franklin: “Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.” Only the truth, no matter how unpleasant or inconvenient, will set us free.

Dr. King and the March for Equality Alcee Hastings and AHF’s Weinstein carry the torch
The nation today and this past week has been celebrating perhaps the greatest speech ever given by an American. We are upon the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s address at the Washington Memorial. I was only 13 at the time, and the world had not yet come into focus for me. I was a little kid more worried about how the New York Mets were playing than how freedom riders in Selma, Alabama, were making out. Some of my heroes were Negro Americans, but only if they could run like Jackie Robinson, catch like Roy Campanella, or pitch like Don Newcombe. As I got a bit older, and began my undergraduate studies at Hofstra University, I came to understand the civil rights movement was everyone’s battle. I came to appreciate that by breaking racial barriers in baseball, the Brooklyn Dodgers and Branch Rickey were not only improving the game, but also making American history. Americans may have feared the 1963 march on Washington might lead to violence. Some argued Negroes were asking for too much too soon. Dr. King, on the other hand, effectively pointed out that Negroes were denied equal rights too often for too long. He was right and white America was wrong. Today, we acknowledge that truth. So it is and will be with gay rights. Only a few years ago, our own activists deplored the push for marriage equality as asking for too much too quickly. The truth is though that the suppression of equality has been unacceptable for too long. Our cause is just and our battle continues. We may have won the right for gays to serve in the military or get married in some states, but until that happens in all 50, you have work to do. Until your tax exemption is the same as a heterosexual couple, you still have work to do. Unless your city is providing the same partnership benefits for the LGBT community as it is providing for married straight couples, you still have work to do. Equality has no deferral date. You are living in a community where AIDS is still spreading too rapidly amongst our youngest citizens. It is a disease that has ravaged the gay community, and spread decades ago because our government did too little for too long. Why? The perceived victims were gay men. We were second-class citizens who did not matter. Those days are over. This week, my dear friend, Congressman Alcee Hastings, cut the ribbon for a new AIDS Healthcare Foundation Center in the heart of Fort Lauderdale. An African American,
Congressman Hastings knows the toll that HIV has taken on minorities in this country. He is aware that our government needs to do still more, and personally fought in the past few years for millions of dollars in ADAP funding. The battles go on. Congressman Hastings is 77 years old, and he was a guest of AHF’s president, Michael Weinstein, who later that day would fly to Uganda, where both gays and HIV are a social anathema. Michael Weinstein will advocate for treatment and healing, hope and not hurt. In their own way, 50 years after Dr. King’s speech, both men are still preaching his dream, waiting for the day when “every valley shall be exalted and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight.” Few of you know this, but Alcee Hastings was one of the first public officials in the history of Broward County to advocate for the rights of gay men and women in the
early 1970’s, when the cause was too silent and too few voices were heard anywhere. He has always understood that discrimination comes in many colors, from denying binational couples marital rights to unjustly locking up too many minorities for victimless drug crimes. Dr. King tried to teach us we all have one color. And he was right, because the rainbow belongs to every American. One day, maybe we will all be able to sit down at Dr. King’s “table of brotherhood,” Maybe one day this nation will stop oppressing its poor, its minorities, and its disenfranchised, and embark upon a day when we will transform ourselves into an “oasis of freedom and justice.” For that day to come, Miami cops will have to stop tasing and killing teenage graffiti artists, and mayors will have to stop sexually assaulting their secretaries. The NSA will have to stop spying on our citizens, and the CIA will have to stop torturing prisoners at Guantanamo. Kids will have to stop shooting each other in our schoolyards,
soflagaynews //
and schools will have to cultivate mental health programs. A neighborhood watch won’t lead to a white kid shooting a black teenager but instead it will protect a young child from a sexual predator. Southern politicians won’t erect roadblocks to voting rights for minorities, and the United States Senate will recognize that out of millions of immigrants today, one could become a president tomorrow. The bottom line is that even though 50 years have passed since Dr. King’s speech, we all still have much to dream about. There are causes always worth fighting for, from Syrian refugees living in desert encampments to 50,000 dogs abandoned on the outskirts of Detroit. There is more to do than worry about Miley Cyrus and the way she dressed at the Video Music Awards. Find your passion and make it happen. Make your life matter. It is the only one you got, and while the future may lie beyond your vision, it is not beyond your control.

The $2.3 Million Dollar Question
Residents question Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Dean Trantalis’ motives Commissioner Trantalis, as a homeowner in Middle River Terrace, I’m a bit baffled and somewhat confused as to what’s been transpiring in Fort Lauderdale’s District 2 of late. As most people are aware, there’s been some contention regarding the planned improvements for Dixie Hwy. Improvements which affect the corridor of Dixie Hwy that stretches from the bridge, South of Five Points in Wilton Manors, straight thru to 13th St. A stretch of road which runs practically through the center of Middle River Terrace’s residential community, the community I chose to buy my home in and build a future in. This plan has been plagued by many delays and roadblocks and we’re finding ourselves once again having to deal with another roadblock, which is delaying the implementation of this plan even more. As you know there’s been a lot of finger pointing, name calling and over all childish behavior when it comes to these improvements so I’d just like to stick to the facts. 1.When improvements to the infrastructure of this portion of Dixie Hwy were first pursued by the MRTNA they requested a master plan with the following wish list of elements to be incorporated into the design : “Pedestrian Safety”, “Safe and Calming traffic devices”, “Shared Use Path” or “Bike Lanes” and some “Beautification of Dixie Hwy”, possibly using sustainable products or native plants / trees / bioswales. The MRTNA then went forward for approval with a plan which included a shared use path. 2.The city of Fort Lauderdale did a survey and the Metropolitan Planning Organization ( MPO ) conducted a study of the roadway to see if this plan would fall into the guidelines of the “Complete Streets” program. However, before even reaching half way through the proposed section of roadway, and already finding 29 points of contention, the MPO determined that a “Shared Use Path” was not a plan which should be implemented in this instance. The plan was deemed dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists and the MPO will not support or fund the plan. 3.With that the MPO, the City Transportation and Mobility Dept and the Broward School Safety Department reviewed the current plan of record, referred to as “The Bike Lane Concept”, which received approval and support from all three agencies as well as two of the main cycling clubs from Fort Lauderdale. As you know this plan was developed using the guidelines from the “Complete Streets” program. A program you’re aware of which has been accepted
18

and embraced by Broward County. Not only does the MPO approve and support this plan but they’ve already put aside $2.3 million for it’s implementation. As the rendering shows the plan will provide the residents of Middle River Terrace and those who use this corridor of Dixie Hwy with the following:
The $2.3 million of funding currently in place from the MPO will cover:
The remaining missing sidewalks along the West side of Dixie Hwy and new sidewalks along the East side of Dixie Hwy. Both of which will have handicap accessibility. Well defined 4ft. wide bike lanes in both the North and South bound lanes, including having them painted Green. Reduced Traffic lanes from 12ft to 10ft as per the guidelines of the “Complete Street” Program. Drainage. Bioswales.
Two NCIP grants will cover the following :
Two beautiful entrance monuments with river stones, landscaping, lighting and additional beautification. Architect renderings.
Transportation and Mobility has funds in place for : Two crosswalks Technical drawings.
The remaining funding will be easily obtained thru additional grant monies once the plan of record is approved by the City Commission, those funds will cover :
Traffic calming ( Raised traffic tables at major intersections / One Traffic Circle ). Additional pedestrian cross walks. As I understand the process is meant to work is as follows. When changes such as these are requested by a community they’re required to come up with a Master Plan. Once the Master plan is created and approved by all interested parties ( MPO, Transportation and Mobility ), the plan then has to be brought forward by the commissioner of that district, in this case that would be you, to the City Commission for their approval before funding could be pursued to develop and execute the plan. soflagaynews //
Commissioner Trantalis, here’s where my confusion comes in. There are processes which we all must follow and I believe my community has done what is expected of them. As I stated previously, the residents of MRTNA have complied with the requirement to have a Master Plan for the infrastructure updates created. The community voted on and passed the plan, with a majority vote, back in Oct of 2012. Also, in the meeting held by the city at ArtServe, to educate the residents about the plan, there were 100 attendees of which more than 95% were in favor of the plan. Not only has our community embraced this plan but we’ve also received overwhelming support from the MPO, Transportation and Mobility, as well as from the Broward School Safety Dept. Have our district Commissioner bring the plan forward to the City Commission for a vote. This Commissioner Trantalis is not happening and we need to understand why. As you’re aware the MPO is so supportive of this plan that they’ve already allocated funding to the tune of $2.3 million to have it executed and that’s even before it’s been approved by the City Commission. MRTNA has submitted multiple requests to you asking that you and the city move forward with putting this on the City Commissions agenda so it can be voted on and passed in hopes that we can move forward with it’s execution. Yet Commissioner Trantalis here my community sits, still waiting for this plan to be brought forward to be voted on by the City Commission. It seems this time we’re up against a roadblock of your own making. Instead of moving forward with much needed improvements for my community you are now requiring that the plan be fully funded before having the City Commission vote on it. Your claim now seems to be that you do not want to move forward with the plan without having the traffic calming devices already funded because you feel it would be too dangerous otherwise, that goes against what all the experts have told us. Regardless of the fact that we already have $2.3 million in funding from the MPO for this plan. Regardless of the fact that the MPO has stated numerous times that they are ready and willing to pursue other grants to complete the funding but will not be able to do so until the plan is approved by the City Commission. So Commissioner Trantalis the much needed improvements for the MRT corridor of Dixie Hwy sits and waits as you bring

other plans forward to the City Commission for funding approval, plans which do not have Master Plans in place, such as the revitalization of 13th St. AS important as it may be to revitalize the short 6 block span of 13th St for local businesses, our community is just as important if not more so than the business district because these are the people who live and work in our community. These are the people who have to deal with unsafe conditions on a daily bases. In closing, my questions to you are : Why would a commissioner hinder a community so by continually putting up roadblocks to a safe and fund-able plan and potentially having a community lose $2.3 million in funding already in place. Funding which will go a long way in helping to make much needed safety improvements so our residents can have a better quality of life as well as making it safer for those who drive, bike and walk through this corridor of Dixie Hwy? Why have you not put this plan on the City Commissions agenda and have it brought up for a vote? What do we, as a community, need to do to get your full support in backing this plan and bringing it forward to the City Commission? Seeking understanding, Concerned Resident and Home Owner of Middle River Terrace Domingo Cid

Chris Reiner Not a Monster I am a big fan of your paper and I understand the business of getting juicy articles especially in the gay community out there. An article was recently written about Christopher Reina [“Wilton Manors Man Pleads Guilty in Child Porn Case” SFGN Aug. 7] from Wilton Manors being arrested in distribution of child pornography. I know you posted the facts of the case but what is sad is that this is not a black and white case at all. Christopher was one of the people that started Crystal Meth Anonymous in Fort Lauderdale. He was at the time in his addiction actively using and in a bad spot. He met the wrong people online that were into that distasteful porn and yes he sent it to an undercover agent but that was the only person he sent it too. Chris is not into that stuff. He was lured into a group of guys online he found attractive ...older guys...that were into that and Chris did go along when under the influence to get their attention when he was under the influence of crystal meth. What I think needs to be addressed
more in Wilton Manors is the growing population of crystal meth use in our community. It’s huge! Such sites as Adam4Adam where you can do a recreational drug search or Manhunt or BarebackRT where almost everyone has key words in profile such as long sessions, to the poinT, play darTs, twisted play, making clouds just to name a few. I know first hand as a crystal meth addict in recovery. I am currently in a treatment program at Broward House which has saved my life and it is just sad how the gay community is so drug filled with men young and old. I know the gay community has always been into “partying” but it is just sad how we turn a blind eye to the drug that is overtaking our community. I know all the drug spots in Wilton Manors and it is in almost every block. Chris’ unfortunate incident is a direct result of his use. He has to pay for his actions but he is a great guy. He is not a child molester, he just made bad choices. Mike McCloskey

Gay Lenders Quit Kiva Over Partnership With Anti-Gay University

Kiva is a non-profit founded in 2005 and based in San Francisco with a mission to alleviate poverty by facilitating microloans as small as $25. Visitors to Kiva.org can browse the stories and profiles of impoverished borrowers around the world and chose those they want to support. Kiva claims to have attracted 980,099 lenders who have loaned $466,594,475 in 72 countries with a repayment rate of 99.01 percent. Kiva lenders often form teams based on mutual interests. One of Kiva’s strongest teams is its “GLBT team” founded in 2008. It consists of 6,025 members who have lent $2,883,800 in 102,786 loans. Team members communicate with each other via a message board on Kiva’s website. Because it is dangerous for poor entrepreneurs to self-identify as gay in many of the countries where Kiva operates, the GLBT team tries to discern recipients who may be gay given what is available in their profile. A few years ago, my husband gave me 100 Kiva dollars as a Christmas gift. I made my first loan to a young barber in Lebanon who has since repaid every cent of that loan used to expand his business. By joining the GLBT team, I have been proud to participate in other loans and I have encouraged friends to join Kiva. Last week, I was surprised to learn via the team message board that Kiva had gotten into bed with Strathmore University in Kenya in order to offer tuition loans to its students. Strathmore is a private college run by Opus Dei, the anti-gay, secretive and arch conservative Roman Catholic organization that came to light via Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code in which certain members are depicted as enjoying “mortification of the flesh” by
20

self flagellation. Opus Dei priests, including those at Strathmore can be heard/read in articles and videos condemning condoms, homosexuality, women’s rights, abortion and a host of equal rights that identify Opus Dei as the enemy of Kiva’s GLBT team (and also of Kiva’s even larger and stronger “Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics, Freethinkers, Secular Humanists and the Non-Religious” team consisting of 32,991 members who have lent $12,080,775 in 483,231 loans.) I contacted Kiva’s media representative, Jason Riggs, for an explanation of why Kiva would form a partnership with Strathmore University/Opus Dei. I apprised him of the growing number of Kiva GLBT team members who had stopped making loans, left Kiva or were threatening to do so unless Kiva severs its ties to Strathmore. His written response was disappointing. “Strathmore University is one of the leading private chartered universities in Kenya, and is a privately owned, not for profit institution. On the spectrum of religiosity among Kenya’s universities, Strathmore resides among the less religious[…]Opus Dei is distinct from the daily operations of Strathmore, and they are not involved in setting curriculum,” he wrote. “They do provide a chaplain for those students who want to speak to him, though no one is required to go[…]Cancelling Kiva’s partnership with Strathmore University would ensure that it becomes much more difficult for dozens of hard-working, dedicated students from impoverished backgrounds to attend university in Kenya.” A quick scan of Strathmore’s website, its chaplain’s Facebook page, YouTube videos of Opus Dei priests speaking at soflagaynews //
Strathmore and railing against condoms, and letters from Opus Dei priests active at Strathmore to newspapers in Kenya saying that “sodomy is a sin” prove otherwise. The only chaplains allowed at Strathmore are Opus Dei priests. There is no gay or gaystraight student organization. Strathmore’s equal rights protections statement contains no mention of sexual orientation. Students are encouraged to do volunteer work and internships, but volunteering or becoming an intern at GALCK, Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (galck.org) is not acceptable at Strathmore. Members of Kiva’s GLBT team wrote to Kiva’s community coordinators protesting the partnership with Opus Dei. They received answers they characterize as patronizing and dismissive. In response to one member’s concerns, Laura Piper, Manager of Community Support, wrote, “We have found no evidence that this university is preaching or instilling any type of discriminatory or homophobic practices with their students.” Ms. Piper seems to have no sense of the subtlety practiced by Opus Dei in its educational indoctrination. It is incredible that she continues her response with, “I know that some people feel as though Opus Dei’s stance on gay rights must be strongly promoted at the school, but we haven’t found any evidence of the sort.” On the message board, many members tried to figure out who in Kiva’s leadership might be at the root of its alliance with Strathmore University/Opus Dei. The name most often mentioned by members is Kiva’s regional manager in Africa, Cher Jacques. My research disclosed that she has personally lent funds to students at Strathmore,
SouthFloridaGayNews
and that she is a graduate of a Catholic preparatory school and has been involved in Catholic ministries described fondly by her in an alumni publication. Indications are that she personally advocated for and established the partnership with Strathmore University/Opus Dei. Ms. Jacques has not responded to my requests for information about her enthusiasm for the partnership. For the moment, it seems that Kiva leaders found a willing partner in Opus Dei and were seduced by the vision of helping poor Kenyan youth receive an education even if that education is tainted with anti-gay and anti-women’s rights hatred. For the moment, Kiva is unwilling to admit and rectify its blunder. Kiva’s defense of its partnership with Strathmore University/Opus Dei seems to indicate their supposition that our protest will soon blow over and that we will resume making loans through its agency. Kiva may be naively unaware of the power of LGBT advocacy and activism that has of late brought down Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, Prop 8 and DOMA, and has successfully trumped the efforts of anti-gay religious groups that would deny equality in many countries. Unless Kiva is pleased to be associated and identified with Opus Dei, it should end its fledgling partnership with Strathmore University and seek to establish healthier partnerships with other Kenya organizations such as GALCK. I have encouraged my Kiva teammates to wait for a formal response to our many requests before reaching a decision to quit or remain with Kiva. Meanwhile, many members of the Kiva “GLBT” and “Atheist, Agnostic, etc” teams have stopped making loans until a satisfactory response is issued.

Taking SAVE Dade ‘to the Next Level’ Say hello to Tony Lima, SAVE Dade’s new executive director Jacob Long SAVE Dade is going to expand its reach — and its vocabulary — says the Miami advocacy organization’s brand new leader, Tony Lima. The 39-year-old, named in Brickell’s Magazine 2013 edition of ‘20 Professionals Under 40,’ comes to SAVE Dade after almost six years with the Miami Science Museum,
where he was its vice president of marketing and communications. “SAVE Dade is thrilled to welcome Tony as our next executive director,” said board chairman Brian Adler. “He brings talent, enthusiasm and passion to his new role and will represent the LGBT community in Miami with distinction.”
Tony Lima, SAVE Dade’s new executive director. Photo courtesy of Tony Lima
Lima’s served on SAVE Dade’s board of directors and run campaigns for CVS/ Pharmacy, Levi’s, The Children’s Trust, Staples, Royal Caribbean and Toyota. Notably, he worked for the National truth [sic] Campaign, one of the most recognized smoking cessation programs out there. “I’m ecstatic with these new challenges. I think there’s a lot that’s relatable [with the Science Museum]. I feel very comfortable. From a volunteer management standpoint, I’m used to this,” Lima told SFGN. “What I add to the position is I’m a seasoned marketing professional.” One of Lima’s first objectives will be expanding SAVE Dade’s reach in a sort of manifest destiny ideal of growth. He wants to reach people through Spanish and Creole (which the tri-lingual Florida International University graduate can most likely accomplish). “I want to take the SAVE Dade message to as many people as possible. Calling an LGBT organization limits it a little bit. But everything we’re talking about is basic

human rights, from discrimination to marriage issues,” Lima said, who plans to hit areas like Hialeah, Miami Springs, Homestead, Doral, Kendall. “We haven’t been as strong as we could have been in the past. We do have a lot of Hispanic supporters, but they’re all the same archetype. It’s a matter of going in deeper to the community and finding people who aren’t necessarily represented right now.” With this kind enthusiasm and confidence, past executive director CJ Ortuno’s commendations aren’t surprising. Ortuno left his post to take a job in New York with City University of New York law school. “Tony is a great choice. I could not be happier in having him take over the leadership of this wonderful organization,” Ortuno wrote in a comment to the announcement. “Tony is going to take SAVE to the next level. He is passionate, inspirational, and highly ethical. Exactly what the organization needs and is all about.” Lima officially takes over as executive director on Sept. 3.

Michele’s Dining Lounge SFGN Staff
D
espite only two years up and running, Michele’s Dining Lounge has already managed to make their mark as one of Fort Lauderdale’s best dining experiences. When you walk in, don’t be surprised if you see manager Mickey Havens behind the piano or on the microphone. There’s live entertainment every night sans Sunday (they’re closed). When Mickey is done performing, he may stop by your table and inquire what you ordered. If you haven’t gotten that far, he may suggest the handcrafted meatball ($10) or mussels ($12) – both are two of the most popular appetizers. Another is the fried calamari ($11) – lightly breaded and served with marinara. Don’t ignore the hot peppers; scoop one up with a bite of squid. The extra kick is worth it. Indulge in the wine list, like the Primal Roots Red Blend from California or the Italian Corvo Moscato. Inquire about the craft beer selections, too. Don’t miss Happy Hour Monday-Friday, 5-8 p.m. for half-priced house wines and well cocktails. If you’re on time, enjoy the Two For Special – buy one entrée off a select menu, get another entrée of equal or lesser value for free, Monday and Tuesday from 5-10 p.m. and WednesdaySaturday, 5-7 p.m. Choices include a tender prime rib served with fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes ($36), Grandma’s Lasagna ($28), and even the fresh catch ($30). While the fresh catch normally changes daily, one of the best ones in the rotation is the seafood shepherd’s pie – shrimp, lobster, scallops, spinach, roasted corn, red peppers, zucchini, and truffled mashed potatoes topped with two asparagus spears. If you haven’t experienced true happiness, you will once you eat this.

While Michele’s specializes in excellent steaks and fresh seafood, don’t skip dessert. For your chocolate fix, order the cupcake brownie or get favorites like tiramisu or crème brulee. A guest favorite, the bread pudding, will make you forget every single bread pudding in the history of bread puddings. Made with Challah bread, almonds, chocolate chips and topped with raspberry syrup, you’ll forgive all other impostures and may be inclined to share the recipe with relatives this holiday season. If you’re just stopping by for evening drinks, make sure it’s on Monday for Boys Night Out. With $6 Grey Goose martinis, Two For Specials, and giveaways for spa visits and other goodies, your disdain for Mondays will soon be delightful. Michele’s also hosts private parties and any event imaginable. Inquire about commitment ceremonies or even divorce parties and don’t be afraid to craft a menu to your liking. Whether you’re dropping in for a dinner date or after work cocktails, Michele’s Dining Lounge has the food, drinks, and atmosphere for it all.

Farr’s play takes audiences along for the ride through key moments in Blow’s life. Through Sept. 1 at the Miami Theatre Centre, 9816 NE 2nd Ave. in Miami Shores. Tickets are $30 at MadCatTheatre.org.

We love Elton John. Over a career spanning five decades, the British singer and songwriter has gone from flamboyant showman to family man and LGBT/AIDS activist. Tonight, celebrate the music of Sir Elton with “Rocket Man,” a tribute concert at Lake Worth’s Bamboo Room, 25 S. J Street. The show starts at 9 p.m., but with a catalog of hundreds of hits, the show will certainly go well into the wee hours of the night. Be sure to head over early and enjoy dinner in gayfriendly Lake Worth, too. Tickets are $13 and 18 at BambooRoomBlues.com.

Swinging Richards Moves to Pompano SFGN Staff It was billed as a ‘soft’ opening, but the drinks were flowing and the customers were glowing when Swinging Richards opened its nightclub last Thursday at its new location in Pompano Beach at 1350 Southwest 2nd Street, right off North Andrews Avenue. Many local bar owners popped in to say hello, including Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete of the Alibi. “A gorgeous club, a welcome addition,” said Padgett of Richards. Added Sean David, the owner of Johnny’s, the local strip club on West Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, which celebrated its 33rd anniversary last week, “It’s a beautiful place, and should do very well. The more, the merrier. There is room for everybody in our community to grow. I wish them the best.” The luxurious facility was once the home of elegant and upscale heterosexual establishments, and Richards has kept the new facility regal, spacious, and inviting. Its new manager, Roman, who ran Cupid’s in West Palm Beach a decade ago, was
enthusiastic about the response on Thursday, but Friday and Saturday was even more overwhelming. A group of ten gay men came in for a bachelor party prior to a planned Sunday wedding at Ed Lugo’s Guest House. The place was packed, its 20 foot long rectangular stage lined with dancers offering full nudity. The club’s owner, CB Jones, says this is just the beginning, and hopes to offer fine dining along with stage shows to the clientele, “I think the upscale nature of the club will be attractive to consumers looking for a Las Vegas environmentOf class and prestige. We want to offer the community an upgrade, and we want to reach out to new friends.”
